0:00:02 > 0:00:04This busy port behind me has been an important commercial centre for

0:00:04 > 0:00:08hundreds of years and inspired one man to come up with an invention that

0:00:08 > 0:00:10would change the future forever.

0:00:10 > 0:00:13Find out who he was, and where I am, in just a moment.

0:00:31 > 0:00:35Today's house-hunters are taking the plunge to start a new life after

0:00:35 > 0:00:38living in the same property for 25 years.

0:00:38 > 0:00:39I like history.

0:00:40 > 0:00:42- Good.- There's plenty here.

0:00:42 > 0:00:44He likes old relics. That's why he's married to me.

0:00:44 > 0:00:46No!

0:00:46 > 0:00:50And the past could set them on the path to the future.

0:00:50 > 0:00:52- Wow!- I love an open fire.

0:00:52 > 0:00:55I could sit and watch one for hours.

0:00:56 > 0:00:59This is Teignmouth Harbour in Devon,

0:00:59 > 0:01:03once home to renowned mathematical genius Charles Babbage,

0:01:03 > 0:01:05inventor of the computer.

0:01:05 > 0:01:08Growing up here in the early 19th century,

0:01:08 > 0:01:13Babbage became fascinated with the perilous passage of ships coming in

0:01:13 > 0:01:18and out of this harbour and so set about designing a machine to aid safer

0:01:18 > 0:01:23navigation. This pioneering device was named the difference engine

0:01:23 > 0:01:28and is regarded today as the very first programmable computer,

0:01:28 > 0:01:32earning Babbage the title of the forefather of modern computing.

0:01:34 > 0:01:38The south-west county of Devon with its dramatic coastline and

0:01:38 > 0:01:42breathtaking open countryside has been a number one tourist attraction in

0:01:42 > 0:01:45the UK for nearly 140 years.

0:01:46 > 0:01:49As the railways expanded in the 19th century,

0:01:49 > 0:01:54sleepy untouched towns were transformed into the popular seaside resorts

0:01:54 > 0:01:56we all know and love today.

0:01:56 > 0:01:59Battered by the Celtic Sea to the north and the English Channel to the

0:01:59 > 0:02:03south, Devon is home to some of the greats.

0:02:03 > 0:02:07Both Sir Francis Drake and Sir Walter Raleigh were born in the county,

0:02:07 > 0:02:09and Agatha Christie put pen to paper here,

0:02:09 > 0:02:12creating some of her most perplexing murder mysteries.

0:02:14 > 0:02:18Journey inland and the gentle rolling countryside gives way to beautiful,

0:02:18 > 0:02:21iconic English villages.

0:02:21 > 0:02:22For over 600 years,

0:02:22 > 0:02:27the thatch has been a permanent fixture on the Devon landscape.

0:02:27 > 0:02:31This centuries-old ancient craft gives rise to a world record-breaking

0:02:31 > 0:02:354,000 thatched buildings that are scattered across the county.

0:02:36 > 0:02:39So if you need space to spread your wings,

0:02:39 > 0:02:43coupled with stunning get-away-from- it-all villages,

0:02:43 > 0:02:45this is most definitely the place for you.

0:02:49 > 0:02:53The beauty of Devon's countryside and its 300 miles of coastline is

0:02:53 > 0:02:57reflected in its property prices.

0:02:57 > 0:03:02The average cost of a detached home here is around £312,000.

0:03:02 > 0:03:05Now, that's about £12,000 above the national figure.

0:03:05 > 0:03:11In fact, the county is not only a firm favourite with home-buyers,

0:03:11 > 0:03:12but with holiday-makers too,

0:03:12 > 0:03:17with around eight million tourists visiting each and every year.

0:03:17 > 0:03:21And with today's buyers keen to start up a new business venture,

0:03:21 > 0:03:26they are hoping to capitalise on Devon's enduring popularity.

0:03:26 > 0:03:30Retail assistant Paul and his former casino manager wife Sue live just

0:03:30 > 0:03:33outside Croydon, near London.

0:03:33 > 0:03:36They've been married for over 25 years.

0:03:36 > 0:03:40I would describe Sue as very gregarious, doesn't have to drink,

0:03:40 > 0:03:43but if she is with people that are drinking,

0:03:43 > 0:03:45they think that she's drunk anyway.

0:03:45 > 0:03:47Paul has got a great sense of humour.

0:03:47 > 0:03:51Very caring and always thinks of others before himself.

0:03:51 > 0:03:55- Sums you up. - Thank you.

0:03:57 > 0:04:01Paul and Sue have lived in their current home since 1990 but they both

0:04:01 > 0:04:06feel the area has changed a great deal throughout the last two decades.

0:04:06 > 0:04:11Thornton Heath is just so built up, every little space,

0:04:11 > 0:04:16they are building flats, houses, schools, doctors, everything.

0:04:16 > 0:04:21It's just... There's no rural part to it any more.

0:04:21 > 0:04:26We've decided to move to east Devon because we've got family and friends

0:04:26 > 0:04:30that way. We've got good road links but you are still in the middle of

0:04:30 > 0:04:34the countryside, so you're away from hundreds of people and the hubbub of

0:04:34 > 0:04:35everyday life.

0:04:35 > 0:04:41We've been considering this move for five or six years, and Sue got made

0:04:41 > 0:04:46redundant from her job and there's no better time than now to grab the

0:04:46 > 0:04:48bull by the horns and go for it.

0:04:51 > 0:04:55Paul and Sue have two grown-up sons who have now left home but our couple

0:04:55 > 0:04:57are not going to be sitting on their laurels.

0:04:57 > 0:04:59When they relocate,

0:04:59 > 0:05:03they're planning on moving into the hospitality business to earn some extra cash.

0:05:03 > 0:05:06I love cooking, I like cooking for other people,

0:05:06 > 0:05:10so I'm quite happy to introduce that into whatever we might do in the

0:05:10 > 0:05:15country, whether it be bed and breakfast or even if we have holiday lets,

0:05:15 > 0:05:19providing evening meals, just whatever people like.

0:05:19 > 0:05:23And Paul is hoping that a move to the country will allow him more space to

0:05:23 > 0:05:27take his stained-glass hobby out of the makeshift workspace in

0:05:27 > 0:05:31the living room and into a dedicated workshop instead.

0:05:31 > 0:05:34I started off with a little mirror which is in the shape of an apple with

0:05:34 > 0:05:41leaves and I have a poppy lampshade...

0:05:41 > 0:05:42It's a Tiffany lamp, really.

0:05:42 > 0:05:45Tiffany lamp, it's 22 inches in diameter.

0:05:45 > 0:05:48- BOTH:- 472 pieces of glass(!)

0:05:54 > 0:05:58All they need to do now is find the right house to give them that country

0:05:58 > 0:06:02lifestyle, blended with those all-important business opportunities.

0:06:03 > 0:06:06On my journey to my new house from here,

0:06:06 > 0:06:12I will be very excited and elated because I'm about to start my new life.

0:06:12 > 0:06:17- Our new life.- And where we move to, we don't want to move again.

0:06:17 > 0:06:19It'll be our final home.

0:06:19 > 0:06:20Yeah.

0:06:24 > 0:06:27We are targeting our search within a 30-minute drive of the town of

0:06:27 > 0:06:30Culmstock, where the couple already have family.

0:06:30 > 0:06:34I'm catching up with our two buyers to find out a little bit more about

0:06:34 > 0:06:37the details of their upcoming move.

0:06:37 > 0:06:39Sue and Paul, welcome to Devon.

0:06:39 > 0:06:41- Thank you.- But tell me, what is it about Devon?

0:06:41 > 0:06:45Why out of all the counties you could have chosen, you want to move here?

0:06:45 > 0:06:48We've got family in Devon and I've got friends in Devon and friends

0:06:48 > 0:06:52just up the M5 and our son is at uni in Bristol.

0:06:52 > 0:06:54- Oh!- So that's just down the road as well.

0:06:54 > 0:06:58Yeah. This is going to represent a very different life,

0:06:58 > 0:07:01- a different way of life for the two of you.- I hope so.- So what is it you're after?

0:07:03 > 0:07:08Well, we're after, obviously, a country house with character,

0:07:08 > 0:07:09farmhouse kitchen,

0:07:10 > 0:07:13Paul would like a workshop because he's got lots of hobbies.

0:07:13 > 0:07:14Inglenook fireplace.

0:07:14 > 0:07:19But we want mainly, at the moment, a property that has got income potential,

0:07:19 > 0:07:24so our maximum budget is 750,000 but that is with an income.

0:07:24 > 0:07:25And how many bedrooms do you want?

0:07:25 > 0:07:28Obviously, that is going to slightly change,

0:07:28 > 0:07:31depending on what type of business you want to get into.

0:07:31 > 0:07:32Ideally, how many?

0:07:32 > 0:07:34Well, ideally, at least three.

0:07:34 > 0:07:37Three or four, so that when the boys come home,

0:07:37 > 0:07:39because we've got two sons, when the boys come home,

0:07:39 > 0:07:41they've always got somewhere to stay.

0:07:41 > 0:07:43And what about land, Paul?

0:07:43 > 0:07:46- Do you want any land with this property? - It would be nice to have land.

0:07:46 > 0:07:50Land to progress in a business.

0:07:50 > 0:07:53Our first choice is holiday lets,

0:07:54 > 0:07:56but depending on our budget,

0:07:56 > 0:07:58we don't actually know whether that will go far enough to be able to get

0:07:58 > 0:08:00an income just from that.

0:08:00 > 0:08:05We know that Devon is one of the most popular places in the whole of the UK for tourists.

0:08:05 > 0:08:07So many visitors come to this part of the world.

0:08:07 > 0:08:09So holiday lets could be a good place to start.

0:08:09 > 0:08:11But again, it is juggling, isn't it?

0:08:11 > 0:08:15The property with the budget as well. And is there anything that's definitely off the list?

0:08:15 > 0:08:19We don't want to live above a business or something like that and we don't

0:08:19 > 0:08:22really want people encroaching onto our home space.

0:08:22 > 0:08:26Well, we do have some splendid properties to show you.

0:08:26 > 0:08:31We know we've got a budget of £750,000, so shall we get started?

0:08:31 > 0:08:34- Absolutely.- Absolutely.- Come on then.- Thank you.

0:08:34 > 0:08:37With a budget of £750,000,

0:08:37 > 0:08:41Paul and Sue are looking to escape a congested London suburb

0:08:41 > 0:08:43and have some space to breathe.

0:08:43 > 0:08:46But they do have some important needs for their new home.

0:08:46 > 0:08:49They want a character property with business opportunities,

0:08:49 > 0:08:51a good-size farmhouse kitchen,

0:08:51 > 0:08:54a minimum of three bedrooms for family and friends to visit

0:08:54 > 0:08:58and a workshop for Paul's hobbies.

0:08:58 > 0:09:02We found some fantastic properties to tempt them with and at each house,

0:09:02 > 0:09:06I'll be asking them to guess the price before I reveal it.

0:09:06 > 0:09:09One of those in the selection will be our Mystery House,

0:09:09 > 0:09:12which could put a whole new slant on their search.

0:09:16 > 0:09:19What are your plans when you make this move down here?

0:09:19 > 0:09:23Well, it depends on the type of property that we have, but obviously,

0:09:23 > 0:09:26we want one where we've got the chance of earning an income,

0:09:26 > 0:09:30so until we know exactly what it is we're going to do,

0:09:30 > 0:09:32it's still very much up in the air,

0:09:32 > 0:09:36so we're very open to any suggestions and any new ideas, because new ideas

0:09:36 > 0:09:38crop up all the time.

0:09:38 > 0:09:43- You're not sure what's out there until you start investigating and going to different areas.- So true.

0:09:43 > 0:09:48- Well, hopefully we can help you with a bit of that.- That would be wonderful.

0:09:48 > 0:09:51Our first house is located near to the village of Aylesbeare,

0:09:51 > 0:09:54just two miles from an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty.

0:09:55 > 0:09:57Along with a local pub and diner,

0:09:57 > 0:10:00the area is perhaps most famous for its wine and cider.

0:10:01 > 0:10:05This local estate has been pressing the apple and grape for over 20 years,

0:10:05 > 0:10:09producing a variety of tipples to suit pretty much any palate.

0:10:10 > 0:10:14Two miles from the vineyards and orchards, we find our first property.

0:10:15 > 0:10:18Through the very pretty garden gate...

0:10:18 > 0:10:20You tell me what you see.

0:10:20 > 0:10:22It's a house.

0:10:22 > 0:10:23It's a Devon longhouse, actually.

0:10:23 > 0:10:25It is really nice.

0:10:25 > 0:10:28Actually, we have seen this one online, but when you look at it for real,

0:10:28 > 0:10:29it is totally different.

0:10:29 > 0:10:33So a very old property with lots of character.

0:10:33 > 0:10:36- Yeah, definitely.- Shall we see what you make of the inside?

0:10:36 > 0:10:38- Definitely.- We'll start our first tour.

0:10:40 > 0:10:44This beautiful Grade II listed Devon longhouse has parts that date

0:10:44 > 0:10:47all the way back to the 14th century.

0:10:47 > 0:10:51We're heading around the back of the property and entering the kitchen-diner.

0:10:51 > 0:10:55Flanked by no less than four separate reception rooms,

0:10:55 > 0:10:58this is remarkably spacious for a cottage.

0:10:58 > 0:11:03A few steps leads us into this room.

0:11:05 > 0:11:07It's nice. I love the beams.

0:11:07 > 0:11:10- Yeah.- It's good, with the light from both sides.

0:11:10 > 0:11:12Brighter and lighter than I thought.

0:11:12 > 0:11:16I didn't expect the kitchen to be this size in this type of property.

0:11:16 > 0:11:20- No.- It's lovely.- But we wanted something where you could have a table and eat and be at

0:11:20 > 0:11:23the centre of family life and entertaining.

0:11:23 > 0:11:25How are we feeling about range cooking?

0:11:25 > 0:11:28I've never used one, but I'm willing to learn.

0:11:28 > 0:11:31- Nice.- Friends of mine have got them, so I can ask for tips.

0:11:31 > 0:11:34Yeah. Also provides your hot water.

0:11:34 > 0:11:35And that's staying with the property.

0:11:35 > 0:11:38- Lovely.- Well, I'm thinking you probably want to see

0:11:38 > 0:11:40- a little bit more, yes? - Definitely.- OK.

0:11:41 > 0:11:45The ground floor also includes a utility and shower room.

0:11:45 > 0:11:48A snug for those chilly winter evenings.

0:11:48 > 0:11:51And on the other side of the welcoming hallway,

0:11:51 > 0:11:54we find a bright day room and two main reception rooms.

0:11:56 > 0:11:58As you walk through this house,

0:11:58 > 0:12:01you do get the feeling of it being a longhouse.

0:12:01 > 0:12:03- Fireplace!- Oh, wow!

0:12:03 > 0:12:04I love an open fire.

0:12:04 > 0:12:06I could sit and watch one for hours.

0:12:06 > 0:12:08Is that big enough for you?

0:12:08 > 0:12:09- Yeah, definitely.- Yeah?

0:12:09 > 0:12:10It's a lovely size room as well.

0:12:10 > 0:12:13And again, it's brighter than I thought it would be.

0:12:13 > 0:12:15Even though you've got the dark wood.

0:12:15 > 0:12:16It's very warm and homely.

0:12:16 > 0:12:19Well, the downstairs seems to have got the tick of approval.

0:12:19 > 0:12:22- It has.- Shall we see what you make of the bedrooms upstairs?

0:12:22 > 0:12:24- Yeah.- Yup. After you.

0:12:24 > 0:12:26As we head out into the hallway,

0:12:26 > 0:12:29a latch door takes us to the staircase to the first floor.

0:12:30 > 0:12:33Up here, tucked under the slope of the thatched roof,

0:12:33 > 0:12:38are four good-sized double bedrooms for when family and friends visit.

0:12:38 > 0:12:41Adjacent, there's a pretty family bathroom.

0:12:41 > 0:12:44There's also a handy second cloakroom and lastly,

0:12:44 > 0:12:46we come to the master bedroom.

0:12:50 > 0:12:51It's a good size.

0:12:51 > 0:12:53- Very good size.- So,

0:12:53 > 0:12:57how would you both feel potentially living in a 15th century home?

0:12:57 > 0:12:58I like history.

0:12:59 > 0:13:01Good. There's plenty here.

0:13:01 > 0:13:04- He likes old relics. That's why he's married to me.- No!

0:13:04 > 0:13:09Never, never. You do both seem very at home here.

0:13:09 > 0:13:11So you've got these four bedrooms upstairs,

0:13:11 > 0:13:14you've got an additional room downstairs that you could use as a bedroom

0:13:14 > 0:13:16with facilities next door to that. There's a shower room.

0:13:16 > 0:13:19- They wouldn't infringe on the rest of your house at all.- Excellent.

0:13:19 > 0:13:22- Yeah, that would work. - That would work for us.

0:13:22 > 0:13:24I've planted that seed,

0:13:24 > 0:13:28there's a pun in there because there's something else I want to offer you outside...

0:13:28 > 0:13:30A suggestion, a business suggestion.

0:13:30 > 0:13:32- Excellent.- Let's head out.- That's what we like to hear.

0:13:32 > 0:13:33Let's see what you think.

0:13:36 > 0:13:38With positive reactions about the inside of the house,

0:13:38 > 0:13:40we're now heading outside.

0:13:40 > 0:13:43With a large lawn, a tennis court,

0:13:43 > 0:13:47and a detached thatched building that could make an ideal workshop,

0:13:47 > 0:13:50this property seems to have it all.

0:13:50 > 0:13:53And with Paul and Sue's desire to earn some extra cash,

0:13:53 > 0:13:57I'm hoping the three and a half acres of garden and paddock stocked with

0:13:57 > 0:14:00fruit bushes could be a winner.

0:14:02 > 0:14:04This is what I want to tempt you with.

0:14:04 > 0:14:07We've touched on the possibility of B&B inside the property,

0:14:07 > 0:14:11but this at the moment is a blueberry field.

0:14:11 > 0:14:14Only five years old, so the bushes aren't very high.

0:14:14 > 0:14:18They're making about £5,000 a year but they are doing it on an amateur

0:14:18 > 0:14:20basis, a bit of love really,

0:14:20 > 0:14:22but they supply all the farm shops in the area.

0:14:22 > 0:14:26However, once those blueberry bushes start getting a bit higher,

0:14:26 > 0:14:29- you're going to get a lot more blueberries off them.- Yeah.- And you've got two and a half acres,

0:14:29 > 0:14:33which they haven't utilised the whole way round. You've got another acre at the back.

0:14:33 > 0:14:35So you could plant up some more.

0:14:35 > 0:14:38So we know with this you've got potential for a B&B,

0:14:38 > 0:14:42should you want to run it, but you've also got your own business here,

0:14:42 > 0:14:47tonnes of potential but we've got to put a price on all of this.

0:14:47 > 0:14:49So, who wants to go first?

0:14:49 > 0:14:54- I'll let Paul go first because I think I remember from looking at it on the internet.- You are honest!

0:14:54 > 0:14:56You're very honest, Sue. Paul.

0:14:56 > 0:14:58Yeah, I'd go for 725.

0:14:58 > 0:15:00725, OK.

0:15:00 > 0:15:04- How good is your memory?- Not very good, but I think it might have been 750.

0:15:04 > 0:15:06At the top of our budget.

0:15:06 > 0:15:10So it would depend what income, we'd have to do our sums.

0:15:10 > 0:15:14Yeah. Well, you'd be right. It's on the market for £750,000.

0:15:14 > 0:15:15Have another look around.

0:15:15 > 0:15:17Wander back in and I'll catch up with you later.

0:15:17 > 0:15:19- Thank you.- Thank you very much.

0:15:19 > 0:15:24This Grade II listed thatched home comes in right on budget.

0:15:24 > 0:15:27With a large farmhouse kitchen-diner,

0:15:27 > 0:15:28four bedrooms and a separate workshop,

0:15:28 > 0:15:31the property goes a long way to offering Paul and Sue

0:15:31 > 0:15:35that country living lifestyle they are longing for.

0:15:35 > 0:15:38And it also gives them the opportunity for some extra cash

0:15:38 > 0:15:42with those blueberry bushes and B&B opportunities.

0:15:42 > 0:15:46- So, what do you think? Do you fancy picking blueberries?- Yes.

0:15:48 > 0:15:53- It's been well laid out.- Yeah.- And there's more land here to actually expand it if we so desired.

0:15:53 > 0:15:56- It's definitely alternative living, isn't it?- Yeah.- Good.

0:15:57 > 0:16:00We'll have to obviously do the sums, as I keep saying.

0:16:00 > 0:16:02Sorry. Sorry to bang on about it.

0:16:02 > 0:16:04The house is absolutely stunning.

0:16:04 > 0:16:08I did not expect there to be so much land with this house,

0:16:08 > 0:16:10so I'm very impressed with that.

0:16:10 > 0:16:14The property itself is much more light and spacious than I expected.

0:16:14 > 0:16:15I loved the kitchen.

0:16:15 > 0:16:17Also, the blueberries.

0:16:17 > 0:16:21It sounds like a really good idea for a business.

0:16:21 > 0:16:25The idea of being a farmer with crops, yeah, I like the idea of that.

0:16:25 > 0:16:28I have got quite green fingers.

0:16:28 > 0:16:32Well, that's a cracking start for our house hunt here in Devon, wasn't it?

0:16:32 > 0:16:33It certainly was.

0:16:33 > 0:16:35You don't get properties like this every day.

0:16:35 > 0:16:38- No.- But of course, we find them for you and hopefully I have got a few

0:16:38 > 0:16:40more up my sleeve. Shall we hit the road?

0:16:40 > 0:16:42- Yeah, let's.- Come on then.- Thank you very much.

0:16:49 > 0:16:53A big part of Paul and Sue's move is exploring business opportunities in

0:16:53 > 0:16:59the area, so we sent our couple to Knightstone Farm to meet Dave and Vicki Lawrence.

0:17:01 > 0:17:04Dairy farming has been in their family for generations and today,

0:17:04 > 0:17:09their 250 cows supply milk to most of the major supermarkets.

0:17:10 > 0:17:11But it's their other business,

0:17:11 > 0:17:15the world of glamorous camping or glamping,

0:17:15 > 0:17:18that may be of interest to our buyers.

0:17:18 > 0:17:23Vicki, was it your idea to start up the glamping business as a side to the

0:17:23 > 0:17:27- dairy farm?- Yeah, back in 2010, is when we got married,

0:17:27 > 0:17:29and we decided to go on our honeymoon in Kenya,

0:17:29 > 0:17:32as we both have a love for wildlife and nature.

0:17:32 > 0:17:36We went to the Masai Mara and different other reserves throughout the

0:17:36 > 0:17:41country. We stayed in huts and different types of accommodation and one of

0:17:41 > 0:17:43which was a safari tent.

0:17:43 > 0:17:44And we loved staying in it,

0:17:44 > 0:17:50feeling the closeness of being outside but still within a unit and it just seemed perfect.

0:17:50 > 0:17:54Glamping first appeared in the UK in 2005 and has rapidly

0:17:54 > 0:17:56grown in popularity.

0:17:56 > 0:17:59The returns can be high,

0:17:59 > 0:18:02with each accommodation here costing up to £140 a night.

0:18:02 > 0:18:05But the introductory set-up costs are not cheap.

0:18:05 > 0:18:12A brand-new shepherd's hut, similar to the one on this farm, starts at around £15,000.

0:18:12 > 0:18:16Dave and Vicki are taking our buyers to their exclusive glamping area.

0:18:16 > 0:18:20Here we have our shepherd's hut and our safari tent.

0:18:20 > 0:18:23Just wondering what the initial costs are and when you expect to get

0:18:23 > 0:18:27- a return for your money.- The initial outlay, obviously,

0:18:27 > 0:18:30we have had the planning fees and we have had to buy the units and we've

0:18:30 > 0:18:33obviously had to put in the drainage and bring the water and such.

0:18:33 > 0:18:38We've had to build the car park and fence the site and we are expecting,

0:18:38 > 0:18:43the way the bookings have gone, to clear our initial outlay in three to four years.

0:18:43 > 0:18:46- Excellent.- And what advice can you give us,

0:18:46 > 0:18:49if we were to set up a business?

0:18:49 > 0:18:50It's all about an exciting location.

0:18:50 > 0:18:52We are very lucky as to where we are based,

0:18:52 > 0:18:54with all the amenities we have around us.

0:18:54 > 0:18:57We have Ottery St Mary, which is within a walking distance.

0:18:57 > 0:19:00But you still get the feel of being out in the countryside.

0:19:00 > 0:19:03We have the lake that people can go and walk around.

0:19:03 > 0:19:05It seems to be attracting the people, so yeah,

0:19:05 > 0:19:08we are quite pleased with that.

0:19:08 > 0:19:12But glampers here are offered more than just stunning views.

0:19:12 > 0:19:15They are encouraged to experience farming first-hand,

0:19:15 > 0:19:17by looking after Dave and Vicky's chickens,

0:19:17 > 0:19:20with free fresh eggs thrown in for good measure.

0:19:20 > 0:19:24We are thinking of just having chickens because we would like fresh

0:19:24 > 0:19:28eggs ourselves. How do you actually care for them? Do they take a lot of work?

0:19:28 > 0:19:30No, not too much.

0:19:30 > 0:19:33It's very important that you keep their water topped up at all times

0:19:33 > 0:19:36because there is a high water content in an egg.

0:19:36 > 0:19:40Feed, they are on Layers Pellets and also crushed corn.

0:19:40 > 0:19:43So they get all their general goodness from that.

0:19:43 > 0:19:47And they also like to forage in grass and various different things.

0:19:47 > 0:19:51- Would you like to try holding her? - I'll try.- OK.

0:19:51 > 0:19:54There we go. Make sure you wrap your arms around her wings,

0:19:54 > 0:19:56just to give her some protection.

0:19:56 > 0:20:00And then hold her feet up, so that she feels like she's on her perch.

0:20:00 > 0:20:03And then she should be happy.

0:20:04 > 0:20:07There. There we go, darling.

0:20:09 > 0:20:11- OK?- That wasn't too bad, was it?

0:20:12 > 0:20:16Handling chickens seems to come pretty naturally to Sue and if our couple

0:20:16 > 0:20:18were keen to keep their own flock,

0:20:18 > 0:20:23they could expect a bountiful supply of fresh eggs for their own glampers.

0:20:23 > 0:20:28But first, we need to find our buyers the right house.

0:20:30 > 0:20:33Our second property is located near Silverton,

0:20:33 > 0:20:36around 30 miles south-west of Culmstock.

0:20:36 > 0:20:38With roots stretching back to Saxon times,

0:20:38 > 0:20:43this community lays claim to being one of the oldest villages in Devon.

0:20:43 > 0:20:47At its heart is a 15th century church and its narrow streets are home to a

0:20:47 > 0:20:48number of thatched homes.

0:20:49 > 0:20:53Silverton has more than its fair share of watering holes,

0:20:53 > 0:20:54boasting three pubs.

0:20:54 > 0:20:57There is also a post office and convenience store,

0:20:57 > 0:21:01so hopefully Paul and Sue can make use of the village's amenities,

0:21:01 > 0:21:04as our house is just two miles away.

0:21:06 > 0:21:11Right, a little bit windy up here, but here is your next property.

0:21:11 > 0:21:14- Hidden there.- What?

0:21:14 > 0:21:15- Half of it?- Yeah.

0:21:15 > 0:21:16So, you are semidetached.

0:21:16 > 0:21:21It is difficult to see as you walk down, you don't realise you've actually got a neighbour.

0:21:21 > 0:21:25But this was a barn that was converted in the 1990s.

0:21:25 > 0:21:26- Interesting.- Yeah.

0:21:26 > 0:21:30Looks quite light and airy but it looks modern and it's semidetached,

0:21:30 > 0:21:32so it depends how private it is.

0:21:32 > 0:21:37- Yeah.- Let's see what you make of the inside, shall we?- Yeah, definitely. - Absolutely.

0:21:37 > 0:21:39Converted around 20 years ago,

0:21:39 > 0:21:43this spacious property comes with around four acres of land and an

0:21:43 > 0:21:47elevated position gives it great views over the surrounding countryside.

0:21:49 > 0:21:51But all is not what it seems with this house.

0:21:52 > 0:21:57This upside-down property means the bedrooms are down on the ground floor.

0:21:57 > 0:22:01Up on the first floor lie the main living areas which allow all the rooms

0:22:01 > 0:22:04to make the most of that amazing vista.

0:22:04 > 0:22:06We are entering the sitting room from the main staircase.

0:22:09 > 0:22:12So, a reserved response outside.

0:22:12 > 0:22:15I think you were both being polite.

0:22:15 > 0:22:17I was getting all excited about the views and everything else...

0:22:17 > 0:22:19The views are lovely.

0:22:19 > 0:22:20What do you think inside?

0:22:20 > 0:22:24It is nice and spacious, as a room, it's really nice.

0:22:24 > 0:22:26You don't feel like you are in a barn.

0:22:26 > 0:22:27- No.- Oh, no, not at all.

0:22:27 > 0:22:30They've actually divided this floor up on the barn.

0:22:30 > 0:22:34We are in the sitting room at the moment but you've actually got a separate dining room there.

0:22:34 > 0:22:36- OK.- And through there, you've got a study,

0:22:36 > 0:22:39with the most magnificent views.

0:22:39 > 0:22:42To the point where the owners actually moved the desk away from the views

0:22:42 > 0:22:44because not a lot of work gets done.

0:22:45 > 0:22:47But let's go and look at the kitchen next.

0:22:47 > 0:22:50- See what you think of that. - OK.

0:22:50 > 0:22:54Although on just two floors, the kitchen is accessed via a few steps,

0:22:54 > 0:22:56taking us to a raised level.

0:22:57 > 0:23:01Let's see if I can sway you with the kitchen.

0:23:02 > 0:23:05- Very bright.- It is very bright and airy.

0:23:05 > 0:23:06High ceilings.

0:23:07 > 0:23:10It is a lovely style but I'm not sure whether it's us.

0:23:12 > 0:23:14- Too contemporary? Is that what you're thinking?- Yeah.

0:23:14 > 0:23:18- Yeah.- Well, we're going to have a look at the bedrooms, which are below.

0:23:18 > 0:23:20Because this is an upside-down house.

0:23:20 > 0:23:24- Yes.- Again, designed in that way to make the most of the views.

0:23:24 > 0:23:25Yeah. OK.

0:23:30 > 0:23:35I'm hoping that the ground floor will impress Paul and Sue and get them back onside.

0:23:35 > 0:23:38Going back through the sitting room and down the stairs takes us to the

0:23:38 > 0:23:43ground floor. Down here, there are two good-sized double bedrooms

0:23:43 > 0:23:45and a family bathroom.

0:23:45 > 0:23:47Across the hall, there's a third bedroom,

0:23:47 > 0:23:50currently used as a second sitting room.

0:23:50 > 0:23:55It comes complete with bi-folding doors, leading to a patio area.

0:23:55 > 0:23:59And then there's this, the sumptuous master bedroom,

0:23:59 > 0:24:03with a stylish en-suite shower room.

0:24:04 > 0:24:06So we are downstairs in the property now.

0:24:06 > 0:24:08Still more stairs though, keep you fit.

0:24:08 > 0:24:10- This is a lovely room.- Oh, yes.

0:24:10 > 0:24:12It's nice having the doors going out into the garden.

0:24:12 > 0:24:15- Yeah.- It's too modern for my liking.

0:24:15 > 0:24:16OK.

0:24:18 > 0:24:20But that's not to say that it's not a wonderful place.

0:24:20 > 0:24:22It's just too modern.

0:24:22 > 0:24:23It's probably just not our style.

0:24:23 > 0:24:26Look at this face, I'm not going to give up, am I?

0:24:26 > 0:24:30- No.- Let's go outside, I'm going to give it one last shot.

0:24:30 > 0:24:34- See what I've got to show you, in case it does change your mind.- OK.

0:24:35 > 0:24:40It's becoming increasingly clear that this property is not Paul and Sue's taste.

0:24:40 > 0:24:44But I'm hoping the four acres of land attached to this house may

0:24:44 > 0:24:47give them food for thought.

0:24:48 > 0:24:52So the final part of this house tour is the all-important income potential

0:24:52 > 0:24:57and what this property has is all the land behind us and then further

0:24:57 > 0:24:59down, there are a couple of sort of agricultural buildings.

0:24:59 > 0:25:02The one on the left is yours.

0:25:02 > 0:25:04It's a large barn that has been converted.

0:25:04 > 0:25:07Half of it is a stable block and the other half has, sort of, been left,

0:25:07 > 0:25:09so perfect for a workshop.

0:25:09 > 0:25:12Just a thought, the equestrian world.

0:25:12 > 0:25:15People who have horses often want to take them on holiday for them,

0:25:15 > 0:25:18but it's quite difficult to find somewhere to stable them and perhaps

0:25:18 > 0:25:19have them graze. Actually,

0:25:19 > 0:25:22you've already got a stable block which has been done.

0:25:22 > 0:25:26You could offer people the chance to come either camping or glamping and

0:25:26 > 0:25:30if they wanted to bring their horses, offer them pasture and secure stabling.

0:25:30 > 0:25:34- Good idea.- And they will do a lot of the work for you. - Because it's their horses.

0:25:34 > 0:25:38- That's the thing.- That's true.- You won't be mucking anybody out.

0:25:38 > 0:25:39Well, finally,

0:25:39 > 0:25:44let's see how much we think this converted barn with the land is on the market for.

0:25:44 > 0:25:49- I would say about 580.- OK.

0:25:49 > 0:25:52And I would go 620.

0:25:55 > 0:25:57You are actually the closest this time.

0:25:57 > 0:26:01- OK.- But still quite a lot out, I'm afraid.

0:26:01 > 0:26:06- The asking price is £695,000. - Wow!- You look shocked.

0:26:06 > 0:26:08I am, yeah. I'm quite shocked.

0:26:08 > 0:26:10Because it's a semidetached as well.

0:26:10 > 0:26:15It might not be exactly what you want but sometimes a second view and you

0:26:15 > 0:26:18can warm to ideas or perhaps come up with fresh ones.

0:26:18 > 0:26:20I'm talking now, aren't I? I'm going to send you off.

0:26:20 > 0:26:22- OK.- Thank you.

0:26:22 > 0:26:23- Thank you.- Bye-bye.

0:26:27 > 0:26:29This was a hard one.

0:26:29 > 0:26:31I didn't gauge it right at all.

0:26:31 > 0:26:35I thought they were going to adore this property.

0:26:35 > 0:26:38At £55,000 under budget,

0:26:38 > 0:26:41this modern barn conversion wasn't quite right for Paul and Sue,

0:26:41 > 0:26:46despite having a large, bright kitchen, four double bedrooms,

0:26:46 > 0:26:49as well as outbuildings and four acres of land

0:26:49 > 0:26:52for those all-important business opportunities.

0:26:52 > 0:26:55It's a nice house but it's just not my taste and ideally,

0:26:55 > 0:27:00we would like a detached house.

0:27:00 > 0:27:01With a bit more privacy.

0:27:01 > 0:27:03The house is lovely.

0:27:04 > 0:27:05The land is lovely.

0:27:05 > 0:27:08Everything is very good about it.

0:27:08 > 0:27:10It's not my cup of tea.

0:27:11 > 0:27:13Right, well, that's it for today.

0:27:13 > 0:27:15You've seen two of our houses.

0:27:15 > 0:27:17- Shall we hit the road?- Yes, please.

0:27:17 > 0:27:19- Come on.- Thank you.

0:27:27 > 0:27:31Husband and wife Paul and Sue from Thornton Heath, near Croydon, want to

0:27:31 > 0:27:36relocate to Devon with a budget of £750,000.

0:27:36 > 0:27:41They are hunting for a character property that offers the potential to earn some extra cash.

0:27:41 > 0:27:44So far, we've shown them two very different houses,

0:27:44 > 0:27:47neither of which have quite been on target.

0:27:47 > 0:27:52But the Mystery House may challenge our buyers' expectations and really

0:27:52 > 0:27:54- surprise them.- Wow!

0:27:54 > 0:27:59Yeah. It is just too much to believe. It's just perfect.

0:27:59 > 0:28:02And I'll be heading to the woods to help create some extraordinary

0:28:02 > 0:28:06sculptures, all made from natural resources.

0:28:06 > 0:28:07Looking magnificent.

0:28:07 > 0:28:09That is absolutely beautiful.

0:28:12 > 0:28:15It's always very satisfying when a house tour goes well.

0:28:15 > 0:28:17And what a brilliant start to yesterday.

0:28:17 > 0:28:22However, who couldn't fall in love with that 15th century thatch?

0:28:22 > 0:28:28But, let's be honest, I completely misjudged it with our second offering,

0:28:28 > 0:28:29the contemporary barn.

0:28:29 > 0:28:31I thought that was a splendid home,

0:28:31 > 0:28:34but it did leave Paul and Sue completely cold.

0:28:34 > 0:28:39But not one to be deterred, today we have our Mystery House.

0:28:39 > 0:28:40Now, let's remind ourselves,

0:28:40 > 0:28:45our couple are after the perfect property with income potential.

0:28:45 > 0:28:48And with this home, well, put it this way,

0:28:48 > 0:28:51they're going to have to learn to share to make it work.

0:28:55 > 0:28:59So, what are your thoughts today on our Mystery House?

0:28:59 > 0:29:02What's going through your mind?

0:29:02 > 0:29:03I'm not sure what it could be.

0:29:03 > 0:29:06I think, because we've not touched on it,

0:29:06 > 0:29:08something that will need some work doing on it.

0:29:11 > 0:29:14I don't think it will be modern because we had the modern touch yesterday.

0:29:14 > 0:29:18- Still exciting though.- Yes.- Yeah? - Because it's the unknown, isn't it?

0:29:23 > 0:29:26The Mystery House is in the village of Whimple,

0:29:26 > 0:29:28around a 30-minute drive from Culmstock.

0:29:28 > 0:29:30With a listing in the Domesday Book,

0:29:30 > 0:29:34at the heart of this community is the 19th-century square.

0:29:34 > 0:29:38At its centre is a rebuilt Norman church and close by,

0:29:38 > 0:29:40a post office-come-convenience store,

0:29:40 > 0:29:46two pubs and a mainline station with links to nearby Exeter and London.

0:29:46 > 0:29:50Our Mystery House is just a stone's throw from the village centre.

0:29:50 > 0:29:53You can't look up quite yet until I've got you in place because I want to

0:29:53 > 0:29:56make sure that I get maximum impact when I say,

0:29:56 > 0:29:59you can look up now and welcome to your Mystery House.

0:29:59 > 0:30:00- Oh, wow!- Wow!

0:30:02 > 0:30:03That is gorgeous.

0:30:03 > 0:30:06It is absolutely gobsmacking nice.

0:30:07 > 0:30:08- Wow!- I really like that.

0:30:08 > 0:30:11Hazard a guess why this might be our Mystery House.

0:30:13 > 0:30:14I don't know. Tell us.

0:30:15 > 0:30:17It depends how much you want to share.

0:30:17 > 0:30:19Shall I just leave you with that?

0:30:19 > 0:30:22- Cryptic, cryptic.- I'm not very good at conundrums.

0:30:22 > 0:30:24Well, you love the outside.

0:30:24 > 0:30:28I'm feeling pretty confident on the inside. Shall we? Come on.

0:30:28 > 0:30:30Let's go.

0:30:30 > 0:30:35The oldest part of this Grade II listed property dates back 400 years

0:30:35 > 0:30:37and is built from traditional cob and stone.

0:30:37 > 0:30:40Originally two farmers' cottages, over the centuries,

0:30:40 > 0:30:45tasteful extensions have been added, bringing the house bang up-to-date.

0:30:45 > 0:30:49It now offers a shade over 3,000 square feet of luxury living.

0:30:49 > 0:30:51We are starting in the main entrance hall.

0:30:55 > 0:30:57Come on in.

0:30:57 > 0:30:59SUE GASPS

0:30:59 > 0:31:02- I like gasps. That's a good sign.- Wow!

0:31:02 > 0:31:05- So, we have this very welcoming hallway.- Yeah.- Gorgeous.

0:31:05 > 0:31:07Great reactions.

0:31:07 > 0:31:09I think I know what you're going to say next door.

0:31:09 > 0:31:11Let's go to the kitchen.

0:31:11 > 0:31:17- Come on into your kitchen.- Wow! - Yeah.- It's amazing.- It is perfect, isn't it?

0:31:17 > 0:31:21It's a beautifully fitted kitchen, lots of space.

0:31:21 > 0:31:23And then, as you probably have spied,

0:31:23 > 0:31:25you've got a garden room/ conservatory.

0:31:25 > 0:31:28- Wow!- It is just too much to believe.

0:31:28 > 0:31:29It's just perfect.

0:31:31 > 0:31:33Can I just have a peek at what's down there?

0:31:33 > 0:31:35Of course you can. Go on, have a look.

0:31:37 > 0:31:39Stairs leading to a utility room.

0:31:39 > 0:31:41- Wow, stairs!- OK.- Great storage space.

0:31:41 > 0:31:43If this kitchen wasn't big enough already.

0:31:43 > 0:31:46Hey, I don't need to sell it any more.

0:31:46 > 0:31:48You love it. Let's keep going.

0:31:48 > 0:31:51Just a short walk across the hallway takes us to the main sitting room.

0:31:53 > 0:31:54Wow!

0:31:54 > 0:31:56Wood burner.

0:31:56 > 0:31:58- Window seat.- Tick. Tick.

0:31:59 > 0:32:02Lots of little nooks and crannies. Even the window, yeah.

0:32:02 > 0:32:04- Beautiful.- Just adds character, doesn't it?

0:32:04 > 0:32:08So, we have this sitting room, but in the Victorian times,

0:32:08 > 0:32:11they actually extended the cottage, so you've got... I'm going to call it an art room,

0:32:11 > 0:32:15it's got patio doors leading out and in the mornings, the sunlight floods in.

0:32:15 > 0:32:19The current owners use that to draw and do all their arts and hobbies.

0:32:19 > 0:32:23But then, next door to that, it could be a separate dining room,

0:32:23 > 0:32:25if you wanted something more formal.

0:32:25 > 0:32:28- At the moment, they use it as an office.- Excellent.- Happy with the downstairs?

0:32:28 > 0:32:30- Very.- Yes, very.

0:32:30 > 0:32:31Let's go upstairs now.

0:32:34 > 0:32:36I'm so happy. Right, upstairs we go.

0:32:38 > 0:32:40The stairs lead to a spacious landing.

0:32:40 > 0:32:44From here, there is access to three good-sized bedrooms,

0:32:44 > 0:32:46all bright and airy with original exposed beams.

0:32:48 > 0:32:52One has an en-suite and there's also a family shower room.

0:32:53 > 0:32:56But what I'm keen to show them is a further bedroom with a well appointed

0:32:56 > 0:33:01en-suite. I'm thinking this area could be an opportunity for Paul and Sue

0:33:01 > 0:33:03to earn some extra cash,

0:33:03 > 0:33:06as it has its own entrance with steps from the garden.

0:33:06 > 0:33:07You could rent this out.

0:33:07 > 0:33:10They don't need to come into the rest of the house,

0:33:10 > 0:33:11unless you wanted them to.

0:33:11 > 0:33:13And they can come and go as they please.

0:33:13 > 0:33:16- Fantastic.- And there are three other bedrooms here.

0:33:16 > 0:33:22So if you wanted to share this house with other people and over a period

0:33:22 > 0:33:24of years make some serious money,

0:33:24 > 0:33:27you could easily rent out some of the other bedrooms.

0:33:27 > 0:33:30It really is down to you but as a taster, to get you started,

0:33:30 > 0:33:32you've never done it before,

0:33:32 > 0:33:35this would be a good sort of step one into the business.

0:33:35 > 0:33:37It certainly would be. Wow!

0:33:38 > 0:33:39Beautiful.

0:33:40 > 0:33:43They seem extremely impressed with the interior,

0:33:43 > 0:33:48but could this beautiful cottage garden be the icing on the cake?

0:33:48 > 0:33:50Next to the house is a thatched garage.

0:33:50 > 0:33:54There is also patio decking leading from the conservatory,

0:33:54 > 0:33:58the lush lawns and well-established trees and shrubs.

0:33:58 > 0:34:01So we've now got to look at the finances, haven't we,

0:34:01 > 0:34:03for our mystery property?

0:34:05 > 0:34:07- Who is going to go first? - Ladies first.- Thanks.

0:34:08 > 0:34:11Well, I think it's probably over our budget.

0:34:11 > 0:34:15Maybe just a little bit, I'll go for 760.

0:34:16 > 0:34:18- Fair enough.- OK.

0:34:18 > 0:34:22- And more out of hope, I'm going to go 750.- Are you?

0:34:22 > 0:34:26The asking price is offers in the region of £750,000.

0:34:26 > 0:34:28There you go. Wow!

0:34:28 > 0:34:29- It's attainable.- Yeah.

0:34:29 > 0:34:33- Yeah.- All right, please, have another look around.

0:34:33 > 0:34:36- OK.- And give me a shout when you are ready.

0:34:36 > 0:34:40- All right. Thank you.- See you in a minute.

0:34:40 > 0:34:44This Grade II listed cottage comes in bang on budget and Paul and Sue

0:34:44 > 0:34:47seem smitten with this Devon beauty.

0:34:47 > 0:34:50And who wouldn't fall in love with this character property? Featuring a

0:34:50 > 0:34:52large kitchen-diner,

0:34:52 > 0:34:56four ample bedrooms and its stunning chocolate box looks,

0:34:56 > 0:34:58that should have no trouble attracting

0:34:58 > 0:35:00those bed-and-breakfast guests.

0:35:01 > 0:35:03- Window seat.- Wow!

0:35:04 > 0:35:07This is really nice as well.

0:35:07 > 0:35:08Really light.

0:35:08 > 0:35:09This will do me nicely.

0:35:12 > 0:35:16- It's lovely. - This Mystery House is amazing.

0:35:16 > 0:35:18It's like a dream come true.

0:35:20 > 0:35:22What can I say? It's perfection.

0:35:22 > 0:35:25There's nothing that I would change, at all.

0:35:25 > 0:35:27Can't think of anything at this moment in time.

0:35:27 > 0:35:33I had no idea that there would be something like this that would just blow me away.

0:35:33 > 0:35:34It's perfect.

0:35:34 > 0:35:39To be able to afford this house, I'm quite happy to share it.

0:35:39 > 0:35:43And rent out one of the other rooms and do breakfasts and evening meals,

0:35:43 > 0:35:45or whatever anyone wants.

0:35:45 > 0:35:48Just so that I could live here.

0:35:49 > 0:35:52It's got all of the style, all of the quirkiness,

0:35:52 > 0:35:57everything about it is done very, very well and it is just perfect,

0:35:57 > 0:36:01a perfect home to live the rest of my life in.

0:36:05 > 0:36:07How's the B&B?

0:36:07 > 0:36:08Fantastic. And look at that view.

0:36:08 > 0:36:12They are going to sit there, aren't they, your lovely guests, enjoying the view?

0:36:12 > 0:36:14Got their own bit of thatch here.

0:36:14 > 0:36:20- It's perfect.- And when this is out as well, bit of wisteria. - Idyllic, I think, is the word.

0:36:20 > 0:36:24I love it. I love it when the Mystery House works on all levels.

0:36:24 > 0:36:27So you've given me a good indication of how you feel,

0:36:27 > 0:36:29but I want you to have some time on your own,

0:36:29 > 0:36:32have a think what the next move is going to be.

0:36:32 > 0:36:35- And then we'll regroup and have a chat, shall we?- Yeah.- Let's jump in the car.

0:36:35 > 0:36:37All right. Thank you.

0:36:44 > 0:36:48Devon's beautiful countryside has been a magnet for house-buyers and visitors for many decades.

0:36:48 > 0:36:53But its inspiring landscape is also a big pull for artists.

0:36:53 > 0:36:54Born and bred in the area,

0:36:54 > 0:36:58artisan Andre Daniel is a past master at working with wood.

0:36:59 > 0:37:01A former boat builder,

0:37:01 > 0:37:05he's now turned his considerable talents to creating bespoke furniture.

0:37:05 > 0:37:10And these extraordinarily beautiful moths, all sculpted by hand.

0:37:12 > 0:37:16So, when you're walking through the woods, what are you looking out for?

0:37:16 > 0:37:18I love the windfallen trees.

0:37:18 > 0:37:20I don't cut down a tree to make a moth.

0:37:20 > 0:37:24So especially when the trees have started to die and they've got all this

0:37:24 > 0:37:28interesting decay on them, we get some fantastic moths from there.

0:37:28 > 0:37:32So if there's a big gale through the valley, are you out next morning?

0:37:32 > 0:37:35Yeah, my eyes light up.

0:37:35 > 0:37:41Andre is taking me to a fallen tree that is perfect for the job.

0:37:41 > 0:37:43This is a beechwood tree.

0:37:43 > 0:37:46But what's really, really interesting about this tree is if we cut into

0:37:46 > 0:37:49it, which I've done earlier, and we turn it round, we have this beautiful spalting.

0:37:49 > 0:37:51My goodness.

0:37:51 > 0:37:52That is stunning.

0:37:52 > 0:37:55And this will make the most beautiful moths.

0:37:55 > 0:37:59The spalting is a natural fungal growth that gives this slice of beech its

0:37:59 > 0:38:02unique veiny appearance.

0:38:02 > 0:38:04This piece will form the main part of the moth's wings.

0:38:04 > 0:38:09Back at Andre's idyllic forest home, the transformation can begin.

0:38:13 > 0:38:16Maybe you'd like to have a go at trying to find a moth in this piece?

0:38:16 > 0:38:19Do you know what? I'm going to use that as a little bit of a template.

0:38:19 > 0:38:22- Yeah.- So, I look at it and see what it reads.

0:38:22 > 0:38:26Absolutely. So you're looking for the two wings, the larger being the upper wing.

0:38:26 > 0:38:28It's nice, nice curve.

0:38:28 > 0:38:31Then we cut this shape out and then we cut it again and open it up like a book,

0:38:31 > 0:38:34to create the symmetry and the mirror image.

0:38:35 > 0:38:38It takes many hours of careful cutting to create the wings,

0:38:38 > 0:38:42so Andre is showing me another moth that is nearing completion.

0:38:42 > 0:38:46Attaching the wings to the body crafted from the same piece of beech.

0:38:50 > 0:38:52OK, this is the second wing.

0:38:52 > 0:38:54It's beginning to come alive, isn't it?

0:38:54 > 0:38:56- Yeah.- And every stage is meticulous.

0:38:56 > 0:38:58You can't rush any, I'm presuming.

0:38:58 > 0:39:01No, you can't. After this, then we spray it.

0:39:01 > 0:39:03That's something you can do for me, Nicki.

0:39:05 > 0:39:10The spray varnish is the finishing touch and, like a real moth that blossoms

0:39:10 > 0:39:14from a caterpillar, the wings' texture are revealed in all their glory.

0:39:14 > 0:39:17- Look at that.- That's brilliant.

0:39:17 > 0:39:19So, that'll do for its first coat.

0:39:19 > 0:39:21Right, brilliant, beautiful.

0:39:21 > 0:39:25All that remains now is to create the moth's antennae.

0:39:25 > 0:39:29Using a single bar from a feather which is glued to the body,

0:39:29 > 0:39:31our beautiful moth is now complete.

0:39:33 > 0:39:34Looking magnificent.

0:39:34 > 0:39:36That is absolutely beautiful.

0:39:36 > 0:39:39That piece of wood is going to continue to live, hopefully,

0:39:39 > 0:39:42in someone's home for many years to come.

0:39:42 > 0:39:43Andre, thank you so much.

0:39:43 > 0:39:47- You're very welcome.- I'm inspired. Absolutely inspired.

0:39:47 > 0:39:51I'm now going to look at wood and woodland in a completely different way from now on.

0:39:56 > 0:40:01Well, our final house tour around the Mystery House was a huge success

0:40:01 > 0:40:04with Paul and Sue but the proof is in the pudding.

0:40:04 > 0:40:06Are they going to put in an offer?

0:40:06 > 0:40:08Let's find out.

0:40:13 > 0:40:18Well, Sue and Paul, you wanted our help, you wanted our advice,

0:40:18 > 0:40:22looking for this beautiful new home with business potential.

0:40:22 > 0:40:24How have we done?

0:40:25 > 0:40:27- Exceedingly well.- Yeah, brilliant.

0:40:27 > 0:40:28Exceedingly well.

0:40:30 > 0:40:31So, in your own words, tell me,

0:40:31 > 0:40:35what is it about the Mystery House that makes it so special for both of

0:40:35 > 0:40:40- you?- It just felt like a home, it just felt like it was meant to be.

0:40:40 > 0:40:44It just had everything, I think, that we want from a home.

0:40:44 > 0:40:47- I would second that, absolutely. - And I use the word home, not house.

0:40:47 > 0:40:52Aw! You said that, I think, the move was going to be down to you, to Devon,

0:40:52 > 0:40:55and the property buying was going to be down to you, Paul,

0:40:55 > 0:40:57that you'd make the final decision.

0:40:57 > 0:41:04But you've both seemed united from the minute you opened your eyes and I revealed our Mystery House.

0:41:04 > 0:41:07- You're in sync, aren't you? - Yeah.- Yeah, we are in sync.

0:41:07 > 0:41:10But what is the next move then going to be?

0:41:10 > 0:41:12Well, while we were off by ourselves,

0:41:12 > 0:41:15I did contact the estate agent to ask them if we could make an appointment

0:41:15 > 0:41:19this afternoon to go back and have another look.

0:41:19 > 0:41:22And am I allowed to ask, is it putting offer in time?

0:41:23 > 0:41:27We would very much like to have a discussion with the owner.

0:41:27 > 0:41:29Go on, say it, say it. I know your house is on the market.

0:41:29 > 0:41:34- You're ready to spring quite quickly, aren't you?- Yeah.- Yeah, we are.

0:41:34 > 0:41:36We probably would put an offer in.

0:41:36 > 0:41:39I think you will. I think you will.

0:41:39 > 0:41:41- Paul?- Definitely.

0:41:41 > 0:41:44I am so excited for you.

0:41:44 > 0:41:49I know it's only the first step, but finding that perfect home is a big

0:41:49 > 0:41:51step, isn't it? And you've got to sell your property.

0:41:51 > 0:41:55But I am going to keep everything crossed.

0:41:55 > 0:41:57- Thank you.- Thank you.

0:42:04 > 0:42:06Well, we've certainly ended our time here in Devon on a high,

0:42:06 > 0:42:11with Paul and Sue, and I can use this word, adoring our Mystery House.

0:42:11 > 0:42:13You see, it works on both levels.

0:42:13 > 0:42:19It has the business opportunities but it's also the perfect home for our couple.

0:42:19 > 0:42:23I just hope they can sell their property really quickly so they

0:42:23 > 0:42:29can put in an offer and move to this gorgeous part of the county.

0:42:29 > 0:42:30Fingers crossed.

0:42:30 > 0:42:34And I'll see you again soon on Escape To The Country.

0:42:36 > 0:42:39Paul and Sue loved the Mystery House so much they did put in an offer but,

0:42:39 > 0:42:42unfortunately, lost out to another party.

0:42:42 > 0:42:47Their search for their ideal country escape continues.

0:42:48 > 0:42:50If you would like to escape to the country

0:42:50 > 0:42:52in England, Northern Ireland,

0:42:52 > 0:42:55Wales or Scotland, and need our help, you can apply online...
