0:00:02 > 0:00:03The view behind me was the inspiration
0:00:03 > 0:00:07for a very evocative hymn penned by a local clergyman in 1847,
0:00:07 > 0:00:11which, to this day, brings tears to the eyes of British sport fans.
0:00:11 > 0:00:15I wonder if you can guess which hymn it is and where I might be.
0:00:15 > 0:00:17I'll let you know in just a few moments.
0:00:34 > 0:00:36Today, it's good old country air
0:00:36 > 0:00:39that's attracting an artistic duo to move south.
0:00:39 > 0:00:42And our houses are met with a warm reception.
0:00:42 > 0:00:45- It has that nice feel about it. - It's got a cosy feel, hasn't it?
0:00:45 > 0:00:48- Yes, that's it. That's the very word I was looking for. Cosy.- Yes.
0:00:48 > 0:00:51There are also some surprises in store.
0:00:51 > 0:00:53We certainly weren't asking for period, but...
0:00:53 > 0:00:55this may be an exception.
0:00:59 > 0:01:02Today, I'm here in the beautiful county of Devon,
0:01:02 > 0:01:05and this is All Saints' Church in Brixham,
0:01:05 > 0:01:08where the Reverend Henry Francis Lyte was the vicar.
0:01:08 > 0:01:10Tragically, he contracted tuberculosis
0:01:10 > 0:01:12and had just a few weeks left to live
0:01:12 > 0:01:16when he wrote the evocative words to Abide With Me,
0:01:16 > 0:01:21a hymn that's gone on to be sung at every FA Cup final since 1927.
0:01:21 > 0:01:25His legacy is the creation of a beloved British sporting anthem,
0:01:25 > 0:01:27and every evening, here in Brixham,
0:01:27 > 0:01:30the streets echo to the sound of church bells
0:01:30 > 0:01:32ringing out that famous tune.
0:01:32 > 0:01:36The county of Devon is located in the area of England
0:01:36 > 0:01:38known as the West Country,
0:01:38 > 0:01:42with Cornwall to one side and Somerset and Dorset to the other.
0:01:42 > 0:01:45It features two striking coastlines.
0:01:45 > 0:01:47The northern one faces out to the Bristol Channel,
0:01:47 > 0:01:52whilst the southern one includes a large section of the Jurassic Coast,
0:01:52 > 0:01:55England's first Natural World Heritage site.
0:01:55 > 0:02:00The cliffs here are a 250-million-year walk through time,
0:02:00 > 0:02:04with some of the oldest and most recent rock formations
0:02:04 > 0:02:06both located in the county.
0:02:06 > 0:02:11Inland, Dartmoor National Park combines broad expanses
0:02:11 > 0:02:15of open moorland and densely wooded or gorse-scattered hills.
0:02:15 > 0:02:19Dartmoor's deep valleys are home to atmospheric villages
0:02:19 > 0:02:21and small towns like Chagford.
0:02:21 > 0:02:26Known for its well-preserved 15th and 16th-century buildings,
0:02:26 > 0:02:29including an impressive octagonal market house,
0:02:29 > 0:02:33legend has it that a wedding day tragedy in the local church
0:02:33 > 0:02:38inspired the 19th-century historical novel Lorna Doone.
0:02:38 > 0:02:42Dartmoor is also where the two sources of the River Dart combine.
0:02:42 > 0:02:46Thought to be named from the Celtic "river where the oak trees grow",
0:02:46 > 0:02:49it's a description of the waterway that remains true to this day.
0:02:51 > 0:02:56Journeying south, the Dart meanders through the market town of Totnes.
0:02:56 > 0:02:58Claimed to have more listed buildings per capita
0:02:58 > 0:03:00than any other town in Britain,
0:03:00 > 0:03:04it's also become something of a centre for arts and crafts.
0:03:04 > 0:03:09So, with its unique coastlines, extraordinary landscapes
0:03:09 > 0:03:11and historic towns and villages,
0:03:11 > 0:03:15Devon is a county that provides a captivating mixture
0:03:15 > 0:03:18for both a temporary or more permanent country escape.
0:03:19 > 0:03:23With so much on offer, it's no surprise that here in Devon,
0:03:23 > 0:03:25the average price of a detached house
0:03:25 > 0:03:31is £20,000 above the national figure, at almost £310,000.
0:03:31 > 0:03:34And in hotspots like Dartmouth on the River Dart,
0:03:34 > 0:03:35that can quickly rise.
0:03:35 > 0:03:38So if you want your money to stretch further,
0:03:38 > 0:03:39it's worth coming north of the A38,
0:03:39 > 0:03:43away from the coast, to towns like Buckfastleigh and Ivybridge.
0:03:43 > 0:03:46But what about today's house-hunters? What are they after?
0:03:46 > 0:03:49Let's find out a little bit more about them.
0:03:49 > 0:03:51Professional storyteller Janet
0:03:51 > 0:03:54and her retired systems engineer husband Jeff
0:03:54 > 0:03:59met 25 years ago over their love of classical music.
0:03:59 > 0:04:03We went to the same event and we saw each other and...
0:04:03 > 0:04:04lo, and behold!
0:04:06 > 0:04:09He sat next to me in the Proms,
0:04:09 > 0:04:12and then afterwards, we went for a drink.
0:04:12 > 0:04:15True love blossomed and they never looked back.
0:04:15 > 0:04:17So we got married in '94.
0:04:17 > 0:04:19- Yeah, so it's 21 years.- Yeah.
0:04:19 > 0:04:21The things she gets me into...
0:04:22 > 0:04:25You never know what's going to happen next week.
0:04:25 > 0:04:28Jeff is a man who takes his time to think about things.
0:04:28 > 0:04:31Erm... And he doesn't rush into things
0:04:31 > 0:04:35and I have to say, I do get him into some scrapes.
0:04:35 > 0:04:39Certainly, some extraordinary experiences.
0:04:39 > 0:04:41But, you know, that's what life's about.
0:04:42 > 0:04:45They have lived together in their four-bedroom bungalow
0:04:45 > 0:04:48in Ewell in Surrey for 23 years,
0:04:48 > 0:04:50but it's been home to Jeff for even longer.
0:04:50 > 0:04:56I bought this bungalow with my brother over 30 years ago.
0:04:56 > 0:04:59- And then... - Ha-ha!- ..Janet came into my life.
0:04:59 > 0:05:05And we fitted our lifestyle around it.
0:05:05 > 0:05:06I'm afraid so.
0:05:06 > 0:05:10It's a very nice cul-de-sac, nice neighbours.
0:05:11 > 0:05:12But...
0:05:12 > 0:05:15It's off a dual carriageway,
0:05:15 > 0:05:21and we're just 400 yards from the boundary with Greater London.
0:05:21 > 0:05:25Unfortunately, Janet has faced health problems over the years
0:05:25 > 0:05:30and living so close to the big smoke often makes matters worse.
0:05:30 > 0:05:32The hope is that a move to the country,
0:05:32 > 0:05:36with access to fresh sea air, will provide something of a tonic.
0:05:37 > 0:05:40So we want to look to going to the country or by the seaside...
0:05:40 > 0:05:43- Yes.- ..because the air will be cleaner.
0:05:43 > 0:05:45So part of it is a health reason.
0:05:45 > 0:05:50And after a trial run, they know just where they'd love to be.
0:05:50 > 0:05:51We plan to move to Devon...
0:05:53 > 0:05:55..focus somewhere around Sidmouth.
0:05:55 > 0:05:58We have a flat in Sidmouth which we've been using
0:05:58 > 0:06:00for the past four years as kind of a transition flat.
0:06:00 > 0:06:03Get to know the area and get to know people.
0:06:03 > 0:06:10I know Sidmouth very well. I've been going there since 1976.
0:06:10 > 0:06:13I love the countryside, I love walking in the countryside.
0:06:13 > 0:06:16I like doing activities.
0:06:17 > 0:06:19You know, I used to be an orienteer,
0:06:19 > 0:06:21so I'm not running through the country.
0:06:21 > 0:06:25But past that now, but I loved it.
0:06:25 > 0:06:28They won't be relocating alone.
0:06:28 > 0:06:30Janet's love of a good read
0:06:30 > 0:06:32means that they'll have plenty of company
0:06:32 > 0:06:36in the form of a rather large amount of reading material.
0:06:36 > 0:06:38At my peak, I had 3,000 books
0:06:38 > 0:06:43which went into the library and into the dining room and...
0:06:43 > 0:06:46We kept the living room, didn't we, free of books?
0:06:46 > 0:06:50- Well, I've been packing my books since last November.- Yes.
0:06:50 > 0:06:54And that's why we've got 160-odd boxes in the garage at the moment.
0:06:54 > 0:06:56Yes, that's true!
0:06:56 > 0:07:01And that doesn't include the thousands I've given away.
0:07:01 > 0:07:05Janet is planning to continue her storytelling after the move,
0:07:05 > 0:07:09something which first arose from her background as a social worker.
0:07:09 > 0:07:13As well as telling stories as pure performance, she also uses
0:07:13 > 0:07:17storytelling as a therapeutic tool for both adults and children.
0:07:17 > 0:07:21And Jeff will have plenty to keep him busy too.
0:07:21 > 0:07:24I have three main interests,
0:07:24 > 0:07:27one of which is photography,
0:07:27 > 0:07:29the other is golf
0:07:29 > 0:07:32and the third is volunteering.
0:07:32 > 0:07:36I've been volunteering with the Epsom Riding for the Disabled group
0:07:36 > 0:07:37now for 15 years,
0:07:37 > 0:07:40and I'm hoping to explore the opportunities
0:07:40 > 0:07:43wherever it is we end up
0:07:43 > 0:07:45for the local Riding for the Disabled.
0:07:45 > 0:07:47With their bungalow already sold,
0:07:47 > 0:07:51it's time to get the ball rolling on their property search.
0:07:51 > 0:07:54So they'll shortly be moving to their flat in Sidmouth
0:07:54 > 0:07:58while they wait for their Devonshire dream home to come along.
0:07:58 > 0:08:00I'm really looking forward to moving down to Devon.
0:08:00 > 0:08:04I want to be able to walk out of my front door and be in country,
0:08:04 > 0:08:09breathing in the fresh air, but also being able to enjoy seeing nature.
0:08:09 > 0:08:12I've only ever lived in two houses,
0:08:12 > 0:08:15one I was born in and this one,
0:08:15 > 0:08:19but we're moving on to new adventures in Devon.
0:08:21 > 0:08:25Janet and Jeff have asked us to concentrate our search
0:08:25 > 0:08:27in South Devon, between Plymouth and Exmouth,
0:08:27 > 0:08:30an area to the west of their flat in Sidmouth.
0:08:30 > 0:08:33'And before we begin the story of their house-hunt,
0:08:33 > 0:08:36'I'm meeting them in Devon to make sure I'm absolutely clear
0:08:36 > 0:08:39'about what it is they are looking for.'
0:08:39 > 0:08:41Well, Janet, Jeff, welcome to Devon.
0:08:41 > 0:08:44- Thank you.- So what kind of thing are you searching for?
0:08:44 > 0:08:46A minimum of four bedrooms,
0:08:46 > 0:08:52and make sure that both Janet and I have a place to work,
0:08:52 > 0:08:53a nice study area.
0:08:53 > 0:08:56So, two studies, a home for the books and lots of bedrooms.
0:08:56 > 0:08:58This is just for the two of you?
0:08:58 > 0:09:01Well, we've got lots of family we want to come and visit,
0:09:01 > 0:09:02and friends to visit,
0:09:02 > 0:09:05but I also like running workshops with storytellers.
0:09:05 > 0:09:07Is there anything you're not looking for?
0:09:07 > 0:09:10I'd prefer not to have thatch.
0:09:10 > 0:09:12OK. And what are the must haves?
0:09:12 > 0:09:16Well, for me, it'd be nice to have a bungalow,
0:09:16 > 0:09:19but we are open to looking at two-storey.
0:09:19 > 0:09:21But for me, there needs to be the possibility
0:09:21 > 0:09:23of having a bedroom on the ground floor.
0:09:23 > 0:09:24I have a bad back and sometimes
0:09:24 > 0:09:27it's very difficult to walk upstairs.
0:09:27 > 0:09:29And what about the garden, what would you like to see?
0:09:29 > 0:09:32- A lot of space, or...?- Not too much.
0:09:32 > 0:09:36But Janet wants people to be able to camp in the garden
0:09:36 > 0:09:38in case we're putting people up.
0:09:38 > 0:09:41- OK.- So a place for tents.
0:09:41 > 0:09:44So, no garden for you, as in to enjoy,
0:09:44 > 0:09:47- but somewhere that...? - Low-maintenance.- OK.
0:09:47 > 0:09:49I love gardens, I love doing a bit of work.
0:09:49 > 0:09:52The garden's always been Jeff's domain and, you know,
0:09:52 > 0:09:53what ever he wants, Jeff can have.
0:09:53 > 0:09:55And what about the key things in the area?
0:09:55 > 0:09:57What are you looking for there?
0:09:57 > 0:09:59We're certainly looking for a local community
0:09:59 > 0:10:02where we can get involved with activities,
0:10:02 > 0:10:04So with, you know, arts and crafts.
0:10:04 > 0:10:06We like being with people and, you know,
0:10:06 > 0:10:09we like popping in and out of each other's houses.
0:10:09 > 0:10:12I've always had the opportunity to do that, or where I haven't,
0:10:12 > 0:10:15I've sort of helped develop a kind of community.
0:10:15 > 0:10:17You know, that's what I want to be, part of the community.
0:10:17 > 0:10:21And I think it needs to be fairly flat.
0:10:21 > 0:10:23Yes, because when I say, again, when my back is bad,
0:10:23 > 0:10:26I really can't cope with any kind of slope.
0:10:26 > 0:10:29But also that's close to local amenities, like a pub,
0:10:29 > 0:10:32a little shop, a post office, so that we can walk down there
0:10:32 > 0:10:35without having to get in the car and drive somewhere else.
0:10:35 > 0:10:37Just remind me of the budget that we're working with?
0:10:37 > 0:10:39£750,000 maximum.
0:10:39 > 0:10:42And that is if it's a perfect house.
0:10:42 > 0:10:45Well, I know we have some fantastic properties for you to see,
0:10:45 > 0:10:48- let's get searching.- Thank you. - Good, let's go.
0:10:49 > 0:10:52For their budget of £750,000,
0:10:52 > 0:10:56Janet and Jeff are looking for a home that's either a bungalow
0:10:56 > 0:10:59or allows for single-storey living, if needs be.
0:10:59 > 0:11:02They need space for Janet's library of books,
0:11:02 > 0:11:05and they'd each like a study, as well as at least four bedrooms.
0:11:05 > 0:11:08Outside, they want a garden that's manageable,
0:11:08 > 0:11:10but has room for camping.
0:11:10 > 0:11:14And location-wise, they'd ideally want to be somewhere that's flat.
0:11:14 > 0:11:16They'd also like to be close to amenities
0:11:16 > 0:11:19with an opportunity to be part of the local community.
0:11:19 > 0:11:20We've chosen a selection
0:11:20 > 0:11:23of interesting and contrasting properties
0:11:23 > 0:11:24for Janet and Jeff to view,
0:11:24 > 0:11:29but they'll only find out the price of each one after they've toured it.
0:11:29 > 0:11:31The final visit will be to the Mystery House,
0:11:31 > 0:11:34which might leave them thinking they're seeing double,
0:11:34 > 0:11:39but it should guarantee each and every one of Janet's books a home.
0:11:46 > 0:11:48So, it's a big decision, buying a property.
0:11:48 > 0:11:50Who usually makes the decisions?
0:11:50 > 0:11:52- Well, we do it together, really. - Exactly.
0:11:52 > 0:11:56When we bought the flat, we looked at four properties in a weekend.
0:11:56 > 0:12:00And the fourth property was the flat that we saw and, you know,
0:12:00 > 0:12:04within a couple of hours, we decided that was the one we wanted to buy.
0:12:04 > 0:12:07So when it's the right property, we will both know.
0:12:07 > 0:12:11So when you're sure, Jeff, that decision's instant?
0:12:11 > 0:12:15Yes. Oh, yes. I can make quick decisions.
0:12:15 > 0:12:18- Might be few and far between... - LAUGHTER
0:12:23 > 0:12:27We're kicking off our house-hunt in the hamlet of Batson,
0:12:27 > 0:12:29just a ten-minute walk from the seaside town of Salcombe
0:12:29 > 0:12:34and within the South Devon Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty.
0:12:34 > 0:12:38Sitting on the Kingsbridge Estuary which flows to the English Channel,
0:12:38 > 0:12:42Salcombe is fortunate to have a year-round mild climate.
0:12:42 > 0:12:45Its history goes hand-in-hand with the sea - fishing,
0:12:45 > 0:12:50seafaring and shipbuilding have all played a part here.
0:12:50 > 0:12:54The town also saw the less honest careers of smuggling and piracy
0:12:54 > 0:12:58in days gone by, which meant homes weren't built close to the water,
0:12:58 > 0:13:00but further inland.
0:13:00 > 0:13:03Winding lanes are brimming with artisan shops
0:13:03 > 0:13:07alongside bars and restaurants serving local produce.
0:13:07 > 0:13:11Just ten minutes away from this pretty resort is our first house.
0:13:12 > 0:13:15So, first impressions, what do you think?
0:13:15 > 0:13:19Well, love the outlook. I'm just worrying about the steps down.
0:13:19 > 0:13:20It looks quite steep from here.
0:13:20 > 0:13:22They're actually quite shallow, the steps.
0:13:22 > 0:13:25Looks low-maintenance. It's very great. Lovely.
0:13:25 > 0:13:27- I love the stone.- That's cob stone.
0:13:27 > 0:13:30- Local cob stone that they've built with.- Yeah.
0:13:30 > 0:13:31It has been refurbed.
0:13:31 > 0:13:32Built in the '50s originally,
0:13:32 > 0:13:35and the current owners literally refurbished everything.
0:13:35 > 0:13:39New wiring, plumbing, the roofs been done ten years ago,
0:13:39 > 0:13:42- so a really low-maintenance property to take on.- Sounds good to me!
0:13:42 > 0:13:45- And these gorgeous views, too. - Yes.- Absolutely glorious.
0:13:45 > 0:13:47And, Jeff... Thatch next door.
0:13:47 > 0:13:50- I've avoided that for you. - Thank you very much.
0:13:51 > 0:13:53And you've also got the garage space up here as well.
0:13:53 > 0:13:55Room for a couple of thousand books perhaps?
0:13:55 > 0:13:58You could convert that. That could be an option.
0:13:58 > 0:14:00- Excited to see inside?- Yes, please.
0:14:00 > 0:14:02- Shall we go in, then?- Yes. - Sounds good.
0:14:02 > 0:14:06This 63-year-old property was renovated from derelict
0:14:06 > 0:14:09by the current owners who bought it nine years ago.
0:14:09 > 0:14:12A few steps lead us down to the front door.
0:14:12 > 0:14:13Come this way.
0:14:15 > 0:14:17So, into the main living space.
0:14:17 > 0:14:21- Oh, nice, big room. - It certainly is, very nice.
0:14:21 > 0:14:23It's a nice, big space.
0:14:23 > 0:14:24And certainly nice and bright.
0:14:24 > 0:14:27The dining area there, so that's very pleasant.
0:14:27 > 0:14:28And the log burner?
0:14:28 > 0:14:31For a nice evening, can you imagine yourself cosy on that sofa?
0:14:31 > 0:14:34- Roasty-toasty.- Yes.
0:14:34 > 0:14:37- And plenty of space for me to hang my pictures up.- Yes.
0:14:37 > 0:14:40- All your lovely photography. - That's right.- OK, great.
0:14:40 > 0:14:42- Shall we explore some more?- Yes. - Sounds good.
0:14:42 > 0:14:44- All right, let's head for the kitchen.- Excellent.
0:14:44 > 0:14:46The kitchen is directly behind the living room
0:14:46 > 0:14:48at the back of the house.
0:14:48 > 0:14:50First thing you notice as you walk in here,
0:14:50 > 0:14:52look at that view out there!
0:14:52 > 0:14:54It is sumptuous, isn't it?
0:14:54 > 0:14:56Got lots of space, but it's not too big,
0:14:56 > 0:14:58- so just the kind of size of kitchen...- Space for a table.
0:14:58 > 0:14:59That's very good.
0:14:59 > 0:15:01- You would have space for guests here.- That's right.
0:15:01 > 0:15:04And that breakfast space could extend out onto the terrace as well.
0:15:04 > 0:15:06Exactly, exactly, and that would be lovely.
0:15:06 > 0:15:09- It is a heavenly sun trap in the morning.- It is beautiful.
0:15:09 > 0:15:12Well, positive reactions so far.
0:15:12 > 0:15:15Now, this may be a two-storey property, but it does offer Janet
0:15:15 > 0:15:18the option of living downstairs if she needs to in the future.
0:15:19 > 0:15:22There are four bedrooms here with three of them
0:15:22 > 0:15:26on the ground floor served by a fully tiled family bathroom.
0:15:26 > 0:15:30There's a large double at the back with glorious views to the garden,
0:15:30 > 0:15:32plus an en-suite shower room.
0:15:32 > 0:15:36Next door is a smaller double in use as a twin and,
0:15:36 > 0:15:40at the front of the house, is a room currently used as a study.
0:15:40 > 0:15:42But we're heading upstairs
0:15:42 > 0:15:44where a beautifully light-filled landing leads us straight
0:15:44 > 0:15:49into the master suite, the only room on the first floor.
0:15:50 > 0:15:54- You've got the beautiful aspect out the windows.- Yes.
0:15:54 > 0:15:57- Gorgeous view to wake up to in the morning.- Beautiful.
0:15:57 > 0:16:00Fabulous en suite and then you also have a walk-in wardrobe over there.
0:16:00 > 0:16:04- Not walk-in!- Yes. - A walk-in wardrobe.
0:16:04 > 0:16:06Which, again, storage, more book space perhaps
0:16:06 > 0:16:09- or photographic equipment... - Book space? Book space?
0:16:09 > 0:16:13- No, not book space in the bedrooms, please!- All right.
0:16:13 > 0:16:16- What do you think? - I think it's great.
0:16:16 > 0:16:17It's lovely.
0:16:17 > 0:16:20I would be a little concerned that it is above the kitchen
0:16:20 > 0:16:23and any cooking smells might just permeate
0:16:23 > 0:16:24because there is no door here.
0:16:24 > 0:16:27- Well, you could easily put a door in at the bottom.- Yes.
0:16:27 > 0:16:30And then actually, it could be... You were talking about having guests
0:16:30 > 0:16:31to stay or running the workshops,
0:16:31 > 0:16:35- this could be a closed off guest space.- Yes.
0:16:35 > 0:16:38- That would work perfectly like that, yes.- Yes.
0:16:38 > 0:16:41This house certainly offers Janet and Jeff
0:16:41 > 0:16:45the flexibility they require and the outside space provides the same.
0:16:45 > 0:16:47There's the garage we saw earlier,
0:16:47 > 0:16:51adding another room to the property next to the utility room.
0:16:51 > 0:16:54The garden consists of a large, flat terrace, ideal for Janet
0:16:54 > 0:16:59and a beautifully sheltered lawn with magnificent views
0:16:59 > 0:17:01and enough level land for camping visitors.
0:17:01 > 0:17:04What do you think of that view?
0:17:04 > 0:17:06Absolutely fantastic.
0:17:06 > 0:17:07It's a beautiful view.
0:17:07 > 0:17:08SHE LAUGHS
0:17:08 > 0:17:11I feel a "but" there, Janet.
0:17:11 > 0:17:14But I'd be spending most of my time up here.
0:17:14 > 0:17:17I don't think I'd be able to get down there and get back up.
0:17:17 > 0:17:20I think even with that slope, on my good days,
0:17:20 > 0:17:22I would still find that a challenge.
0:17:22 > 0:17:25I think this terraced space would be fine.
0:17:25 > 0:17:27Summer barbecues with the family,
0:17:27 > 0:17:29autumn evenings looking at that gorgeous view.
0:17:29 > 0:17:31Yes, and that is a gorgeous view.
0:17:31 > 0:17:34That is not to be disputed.
0:17:34 > 0:17:37So, you've had an explore, you've seen these lovely gardens...
0:17:37 > 0:17:39What do you think this house is on the market for?
0:17:39 > 0:17:42That's certainly a difficult question.
0:17:42 > 0:17:47I would guess at £740,000.
0:17:47 > 0:17:49OK, Janet?
0:17:49 > 0:17:54I think it will be slightly over budget, so I would think £760,000.
0:17:54 > 0:17:56OK, well, you're both sort of almost there.
0:17:56 > 0:17:58It's actually on at 750.
0:17:58 > 0:18:02£750,000, so the top of your budget.
0:18:02 > 0:18:04But I did have a chat with the owner earlier
0:18:04 > 0:18:08- and he is open to offers.- OK. - Well, listen,
0:18:08 > 0:18:11I'll let you to have a peruse around the rest of the house again.
0:18:11 > 0:18:13- OK.- And just take it all in.- Yeah.
0:18:13 > 0:18:15And we'll catch up afterwards.
0:18:15 > 0:18:16- Thank you.- OK, cheers.
0:18:18 > 0:18:21This beautifully refurbished detached house has come in
0:18:21 > 0:18:24right at the top of Janet and Jeff's budget,
0:18:24 > 0:18:27but there's always the possibility of striking a deal.
0:18:27 > 0:18:31The rooms are spacious and there's a choice of single-storey living,
0:18:31 > 0:18:33plus there are just the number of bedrooms they need
0:18:33 > 0:18:36with the option of having a study each.
0:18:36 > 0:18:40What's more, the garage could be a home for Janet's library of books.
0:18:41 > 0:18:44Outside, there's a large patio with fabulous views across the garden
0:18:44 > 0:18:47and the house's position is ideal,
0:18:47 > 0:18:50just a walk away from amenities and the sea.
0:18:52 > 0:18:55Ah, so this is the other room that could be used as the master bedroom.
0:18:55 > 0:18:57- Yes.- Quite a good size.
0:18:57 > 0:18:59And the en suite through there.
0:18:59 > 0:19:01- It's really nice.- Very nice.
0:19:01 > 0:19:03I like it, it's a very nice house.
0:19:03 > 0:19:05The decoration is perfect.
0:19:05 > 0:19:08The layout should work for us.
0:19:08 > 0:19:11Little concerned about the space for Janet's books.
0:19:11 > 0:19:14So we might need to modify the garage,
0:19:14 > 0:19:17but other than that, I think the house is fine.
0:19:17 > 0:19:19I think it's a lovely house.
0:19:19 > 0:19:22It's very nicely decorated, the kitchen is perfect.
0:19:22 > 0:19:24This lounge is very, very nice.
0:19:24 > 0:19:27I think the difficulty for me is I probably want more room
0:19:27 > 0:19:31and the reality is that the steps from outside down
0:19:31 > 0:19:33I would find very difficult.
0:19:33 > 0:19:38So love the house, wish that it was on a flat place. Which is sad,
0:19:38 > 0:19:40because it has a lot of features that are really working for me.
0:19:42 > 0:19:44- Hi.- Hi, so you've had a good look round.
0:19:44 > 0:19:45- Certainly have.- Yes, thank you.
0:19:45 > 0:19:47- Lots to think about.- Yes.
0:19:47 > 0:19:50- OK, let's make a move. - Thank you.- Thanks very much.
0:19:54 > 0:19:57Devon's rich pasture land and moderate climate
0:19:57 > 0:20:00means a good variety of crops flourish here,
0:20:00 > 0:20:03but one of the oldest crops known to man,
0:20:03 > 0:20:05dating back some 30,000 years,
0:20:05 > 0:20:07has all but died out in the county,
0:20:07 > 0:20:09and it's called flax.
0:20:09 > 0:20:12Perhaps known more nowadays for the linseed it produces,
0:20:12 > 0:20:17its fibres are also traditionally used to make linen.
0:20:17 > 0:20:19Susie Gillespie is a textile designer
0:20:19 > 0:20:21based just outside Totnes
0:20:21 > 0:20:25who uses the environment around her for inspiration.
0:20:25 > 0:20:27She marries age-old techniques
0:20:27 > 0:20:29with her own creative, modern-day vision
0:20:29 > 0:20:32and produces unique creations from linen,
0:20:32 > 0:20:34made entirely from scratch.
0:20:34 > 0:20:39She also runs courses in linen spinning and creative weaving.
0:20:39 > 0:20:43Today, Janet and Jeff have come to meet her at her home studio
0:20:43 > 0:20:45to learn how it's done.
0:20:45 > 0:20:48Now we know Janet loves to spin a yarn, and so does Susie.
0:20:50 > 0:20:53I'm a weaver and I process my own flax.
0:20:53 > 0:20:55I've always used linen,
0:20:55 > 0:20:58so I thought it would be nice to try and make my own.
0:20:58 > 0:21:03So I've started growing it in the fields and processing it
0:21:03 > 0:21:04to use for my work.
0:21:04 > 0:21:08I use textiles and materials in some of my storytelling
0:21:08 > 0:21:10with my work with people who have profound
0:21:10 > 0:21:11and multiple learning disabilities,
0:21:11 > 0:21:15because it helps them to have a tangible basis for learning a story,
0:21:15 > 0:21:17or feeling a story.
0:21:17 > 0:21:19At the moment, I buy lots of my materials from shops,
0:21:19 > 0:21:23but the idea of maybe being able to create my own textures,
0:21:23 > 0:21:24I think that's quite exciting.
0:21:24 > 0:21:26Susie works with home-grown flax,
0:21:26 > 0:21:29planted in the orchards surrounding her studio
0:21:29 > 0:21:33which she harvests by hand, pulling it up roots and all.
0:21:34 > 0:21:37Once it's dry, the first stage is to remove the seed heads
0:21:37 > 0:21:39using a large metal comb.
0:21:39 > 0:21:43The flax is then submerged in water before it's dried again.
0:21:44 > 0:21:48This is the flax that I've pulled up and wetted
0:21:48 > 0:21:51for a couple of weeks in a bath of water.
0:21:51 > 0:21:56- And that just loosens off the fibres from the woody core.- Oh, yeah.
0:21:56 > 0:22:01And the fibres are what we need for the spinning to make the yarn.
0:22:01 > 0:22:05But if I just show you how I do it with the flax breaker.
0:22:06 > 0:22:09It's an amazing tool.
0:22:09 > 0:22:15The design was taken from an old-fashioned flax breaker.
0:22:15 > 0:22:17It's essentially the same process that has been used
0:22:17 > 0:22:19for thousands of years.
0:22:19 > 0:22:22The flax is crimped, which reveals the inner fibres.
0:22:22 > 0:22:25- You keep working at it.- Yes, I can see how that's turning into...
0:22:25 > 0:22:27- The fibres are coming out. - ..the fibres, wow.
0:22:27 > 0:22:29That's very interesting.
0:22:29 > 0:22:32If Janet's serious about making her own yarn,
0:22:32 > 0:22:34then she better have a go herself.
0:22:34 > 0:22:36You take the handle.
0:22:36 > 0:22:37OK.
0:22:40 > 0:22:43It's changing, it really is changing, isn't it?
0:22:44 > 0:22:47That's probably ready now, I can show you the next step.
0:22:47 > 0:22:49OK.
0:22:49 > 0:22:50This is called a hackle.
0:22:50 > 0:22:54It's really just to comb the flax through.
0:22:54 > 0:22:56It's almost like a ponytail, isn't it?
0:22:56 > 0:23:01Yeah, that's where you get the phrase, "flaxen haired maiden" from.
0:23:01 > 0:23:02- Oh, really?- Yeah.
0:23:02 > 0:23:08I tell many stories about flaxen haired maidens. And now I know.
0:23:08 > 0:23:11The next stage is for the flax to be spun into yarn
0:23:11 > 0:23:14using a spinning wheel before it's woven into fabric.
0:23:14 > 0:23:18The golden yarn can be dyed a rainbow of colours.
0:23:18 > 0:23:20Susie creates all kinds of products from her linen,
0:23:20 > 0:23:25including cushions, artwork and table runners.
0:23:25 > 0:23:27So this is the yarn that's been spun?
0:23:27 > 0:23:29Yeah, so it's ready now to start weaving.
0:23:29 > 0:23:34So with the weaving, you use your feet to press the pedals.
0:23:34 > 0:23:39And we use the two outside pedals to make the alternate shafts come up.
0:23:39 > 0:23:40These are the shafts.
0:23:40 > 0:23:46So if you press one pedal down, and you put the shuttle across...
0:23:48 > 0:23:53..and you use the beater to beat the thread in place.
0:23:53 > 0:23:55And then you take your foot off the pedal,
0:23:55 > 0:24:00then put the other foot on and change it to the other side.
0:24:01 > 0:24:04So I guess it's a lot different from machines in the factory,
0:24:04 > 0:24:07where they produce perfect stuff every time.
0:24:07 > 0:24:11Yeah. Well, I think by doing it by hand,
0:24:11 > 0:24:14you are able to put in elements that you like
0:24:14 > 0:24:16and then sometimes, if it goes a bit wrong,
0:24:16 > 0:24:22it just adds to the creativity, you know, the human error adds to it.
0:24:22 > 0:24:25Now Janet and Jeff are getting the chance
0:24:25 > 0:24:27to put their stamp on a weave.
0:24:29 > 0:24:33Yay. And to the other one.
0:24:33 > 0:24:35And then we are whacking this one through. Over.
0:24:35 > 0:24:37That's it.
0:24:37 > 0:24:38OK, go.
0:24:40 > 0:24:42OK.
0:24:42 > 0:24:44Can I see what you've done? Really nice.
0:24:44 > 0:24:47It's been a lovely day. Learnt a lot.
0:24:47 > 0:24:50Thanks for coming. Good luck with your house-hunting.
0:24:50 > 0:24:52- Thank you.- Thank you.
0:24:52 > 0:24:54Now our pair have learned how to spin yarn,
0:24:54 > 0:24:57it's back to the hunt for a new home,
0:24:57 > 0:24:59to give their story a happy ending.
0:25:02 > 0:25:05We're on our way to the village of Diptford
0:25:05 > 0:25:06in the foothills of Dartmoor.
0:25:06 > 0:25:09The rural village is located in the South Devon Area
0:25:09 > 0:25:11of Outstanding Natural Beauty,
0:25:11 > 0:25:14overlooking the River Avon and surrounded
0:25:14 > 0:25:16by stunning Devonshire scenery.
0:25:16 > 0:25:19There's a post office here as well in a parish hall,
0:25:19 > 0:25:23which, curiously, doubles up as the Diptford Arms pub four times a year.
0:25:23 > 0:25:28There's also the attractive 13th-century St Mary's Church,
0:25:28 > 0:25:30whose spire towers over the village.
0:25:30 > 0:25:33Three miles away is the larger village of Avonwick,
0:25:33 > 0:25:37where there's a traditional pub and a garage as well as a shop.
0:25:37 > 0:25:40An eight-minute drive takes us back to tranquil Diptford,
0:25:40 > 0:25:43where we find this remodelled bungalow.
0:25:43 > 0:25:45Oh! This looks interesting.
0:25:45 > 0:25:48Very interesting. It's a bungalow!
0:25:48 > 0:25:50A beautiful, very spacious bungalow.
0:25:50 > 0:25:53- Yes, it is. - It seems to go on for ages.
0:25:53 > 0:25:55Wow. And a double garage over there, Jeff.
0:25:55 > 0:25:58Yes. And plenty of parking, which is good.
0:25:58 > 0:26:01Yes. There's a little village in every direction.
0:26:01 > 0:26:02We're actually on the boundary
0:26:02 > 0:26:05of the Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty.
0:26:05 > 0:26:08- Yeah.- You've got two farmers living either side.
0:26:08 > 0:26:09- OK.- There's so much more to tell you.
0:26:09 > 0:26:11- Yes.- Shall we get in?
0:26:11 > 0:26:13Let's go.
0:26:13 > 0:26:16This wonderfully located property is perfect for Janet,
0:26:16 > 0:26:18offering her single-storey living.
0:26:18 > 0:26:20There's a pretty garden to the front
0:26:20 > 0:26:22and we're entering straight from the terrace
0:26:22 > 0:26:25into a beautifully bright kitchen.
0:26:25 > 0:26:26So you've got the triple-aspect kitchen.
0:26:26 > 0:26:28This was the new part of the bungalow
0:26:28 > 0:26:30that was built four or five years ago.
0:26:30 > 0:26:32- OK.- Beautiful high ceilings
0:26:32 > 0:26:35and a wonderful look into your back garden,
0:26:35 > 0:26:37as you wash up of an evening.
0:26:37 > 0:26:40And then that open-plan into your living area.
0:26:40 > 0:26:45- Right.- Is this somewhere you could have a morning cup of coffee?
0:26:45 > 0:26:48Well, probably nip out there.
0:26:48 > 0:26:50Well, your garden door, literally, there's not even a step
0:26:50 > 0:26:54into the garden. I know you just want that lovely flat aspect
0:26:54 > 0:26:58- into the garden.- Yeah.- We'll soon have the table and chairs out there.
0:26:58 > 0:27:00I like this - forward planning already!
0:27:00 > 0:27:02Shall we do a little exploring?
0:27:02 > 0:27:05- Yes.- Plenty more surprises with this particular house.
0:27:05 > 0:27:07Come this way, come this way.
0:27:07 > 0:27:11The sitting room leads to a hallway, off which are four bedrooms.
0:27:11 > 0:27:13We're heading to one at the back of the house.
0:27:16 > 0:27:18Now, I wanted to show you this bedroom,
0:27:18 > 0:27:21because it's one of the master bedrooms,
0:27:21 > 0:27:23but this particular one's got an en suite,
0:27:23 > 0:27:27- which I know you were wanting. - Yes, yes.
0:27:27 > 0:27:30And then views out into your garden.
0:27:30 > 0:27:34- Very nice.- It's a good size. Plenty of room.
0:27:34 > 0:27:35There's a lot of space in this house,

0:28:18 > 0:28:23- Yes.- And the reason we have a second kitchen in this house
0:28:23 > 0:28:26is the house is actually owned by two friends,

0:28:44 > 0:28:46It has that nice feel about it,
0:28:46 > 0:28:48it's really quite nice and welcoming and just sort of...
0:28:48 > 0:28:50- Yes.- It's got a cosy feel, hasn't it?
0:28:50 > 0:28:53Yes, that's the very word I was looking for. Cosy.

0:28:58 > 0:29:01but there's another one, as we head outside.
0:29:01 > 0:29:06The garden is well laid out with mature trees, shrubs and flowers,
0:29:06 > 0:29:09and there's even a pond and a small area of woodland.
0:29:09 > 0:29:12The compact kitchen garden has far-reaching views
0:29:12 > 0:29:14across neighbouring fields,
0:29:14 > 0:29:16adding up to around three-quarters of an acre.
0:29:16 > 0:29:21There's room for tents too, but that's not all.
0:29:21 > 0:29:24- Ah.- Is that a good "ah"?
0:29:24 > 0:29:27- Ah! Ah. - You're already liking what you see?
0:29:27 > 0:29:30- Ah!- Your beautiful writer's retreat, here.

0:29:32 > 0:29:35Two rooms, one's used as a bedroom at the moment.
0:29:35 > 0:29:38- Yes.- So you could have guests staying.
0:29:38 > 0:29:41The other is actually used by the current owners for artist workshops.
0:29:41 > 0:29:44- Right.- What do you feel when you see that?
0:29:44 > 0:29:46Well, I have to say I feel very excited.
0:29:46 > 0:29:49- Very interesting.- So you've got your writer's retreat

0:29:53 > 0:29:57Well, I think it's got most of the things that we really want.
0:29:57 > 0:30:01I reckon it must be around about £720,000.
0:30:01 > 0:30:05I think it's about £740,000.
0:30:05 > 0:30:08OK. This house is on the market
0:30:08 > 0:30:12for £649,000.

0:30:29 > 0:30:31The kitchen/diner is bright and spacious

0:30:38 > 0:30:41Four bedrooms allow Jeff to have his own space, too.
0:30:41 > 0:30:44The garden and its views are magnificent,
0:30:44 > 0:30:47and the writer's retreat is an unexpected bonus for Janet,
0:30:47 > 0:30:52who could house some of her book collection here.
0:30:52 > 0:30:54Oh, yes. There's plenty of room here.
0:30:54 > 0:30:56For your big worktable.
0:30:56 > 0:30:58Yep. And there's the room next door.
0:30:58 > 0:31:02Yes. I was eyeing that up for my photography room.
0:31:02 > 0:31:05- Well, yes, actually, that's a very good idea, isn't it?- Mm.
0:31:05 > 0:31:08Well, the house here, it seems to meet all the requirements.
0:31:08 > 0:31:13There's plenty of nice rooms, a few adaptations we will need to do.
0:31:13 > 0:31:14It looks great.
0:31:14 > 0:31:18And there's a greater outside space for Janet's library
0:31:18 > 0:31:19and my photography workshop.
0:31:19 > 0:31:22I think this house is very interesting.
0:31:22 > 0:31:25It has lots of rooms, lots of opportunity for developing things.
0:31:25 > 0:31:28I think it really is a real contender,
0:31:28 > 0:31:31and I think this whole place is inspirational
0:31:31 > 0:31:35and I would look forward to being able to do some writing here.
0:31:36 > 0:31:40Have we potentially found a home for your library, Janet?
0:31:40 > 0:31:41Well, there's certainly the space for it.
0:31:41 > 0:31:44OK, lots of smiles.
0:31:44 > 0:31:45Absolutely, lots to think about.
0:31:45 > 0:31:47- Let's keep going.- OK.- Good.
0:31:58 > 0:32:02Morning has broken on the next leg of our trip around South Devon,
0:32:02 > 0:32:06searching for a country home for Janet and Jeff from Ewell in Surrey.
0:32:06 > 0:32:10And armed with a budget of £750,000,
0:32:10 > 0:32:13our brief is to find a property that allows for ground-floor living.
0:32:13 > 0:32:17We've still got a mystery house with a rather big bonus.
0:32:17 > 0:32:20Now that would be a great place to have a glass of something lovely
0:32:20 > 0:32:22in the evening, on that patio space there.
0:32:22 > 0:32:23Or first thing in the morning.
0:32:23 > 0:32:26Oh, first thing in the morning! I like your style.
0:32:26 > 0:32:28And I will be working out whodunnit
0:32:28 > 0:32:31when I visit a world-famous crime writer's
0:32:31 > 0:32:33rather magnificent Devonshire home.
0:32:33 > 0:32:35Any details in this room that are in her books?
0:32:35 > 0:32:39Absolutely. In Dead Man's Folly, Poirot was sitting here,
0:32:39 > 0:32:40Mrs Stubbs would be sitting here
0:32:40 > 0:32:44looking at her emerald ring with her arms stretched out.
0:32:45 > 0:32:48Today is day two of our property search,
0:32:48 > 0:32:52and later on I'll be showing our lovely couple their mystery house,
0:32:52 > 0:32:54or should I say houses?
0:32:54 > 0:32:58But first to a rather grand and very imposing property.
0:33:02 > 0:33:04For our next visit, we are heading just outside
0:33:04 > 0:33:05the village of Stoke Gabriel,
0:33:05 > 0:33:09which is situated on a creek of the historic River Dart.
0:33:09 > 0:33:12The unspoiled village has a good selection of shops,
0:33:12 > 0:33:15alongside places to eat and drink.
0:33:15 > 0:33:18Its narrow lanes roll down to the river,
0:33:18 > 0:33:21where Dart salmon has long been fished.
0:33:21 > 0:33:25The quay is a draw here, where pretty pastel-coloured houses
0:33:25 > 0:33:27peeping out from the wooded hillsides
0:33:27 > 0:33:29form a beautiful backdrop.
0:33:29 > 0:33:31There's also a medieval church,
0:33:31 > 0:33:34its bell tower standing tall since the 13th century.
0:33:35 > 0:33:37Just a six-minute drive away
0:33:37 > 0:33:41is the rather handsome property we've come to see.
0:33:43 > 0:33:47What I'm liking is the big, big smiles that I'm seeing already.
0:33:49 > 0:33:51- It looks great.- Yes.
0:33:51 > 0:33:53It is full of character.
0:33:53 > 0:33:54I love the doorway.
0:33:54 > 0:33:57The doorway is just so inviting, it's so much a story house.
0:33:57 > 0:34:00It's got a history. There must be a story there somewhere.
0:34:00 > 0:34:02It has a great history.
0:34:02 > 0:34:05Late Georgian, Grade II listed,
0:34:05 > 0:34:09restored just four years ago through the entire house.
0:34:09 > 0:34:12So there is so little work to do inside.
0:34:12 > 0:34:14We certainly weren't asking for period,
0:34:14 > 0:34:17but this may be an exception.
0:34:17 > 0:34:20- Let's go in. - All right, you can't wait, can you?
0:34:20 > 0:34:22Come on, let's do it.
0:34:22 > 0:34:24This impressive double-fronted property
0:34:24 > 0:34:27was built around 1820 as a farmhouse.
0:34:27 > 0:34:31The current owners have spent a year transforming the property
0:34:31 > 0:34:33into the home we are about to explore.
0:34:33 > 0:34:36It is attached on either side to former farm buildings,
0:34:36 > 0:34:38which are now separate residences.
0:34:41 > 0:34:42As we cross the threshold,
0:34:42 > 0:34:45a grand entrance hall passes a sweeping stairway,
0:34:45 > 0:34:49which leads to a rather majestic sitting room.
0:34:49 > 0:34:54Beautiful cornicing in keeping with a Georgian property, ceiling rose.
0:34:54 > 0:34:57The original sash windows from the farmhouse.
0:34:57 > 0:34:59And the original shutters as well.
0:34:59 > 0:35:01It's a good-sized room, isn't it?
0:35:01 > 0:35:03Yes, I could see myself here.
0:35:03 > 0:35:06It's certainly got a nice, warm feel to it.
0:35:06 > 0:35:09- There is another beautiful living room of this size.- Right.
0:35:09 > 0:35:11And I thought that could make a perfect downstairs bedroom.
0:35:11 > 0:35:14- Again, it's gorgeous views onto the garden.- Yes.
0:35:14 > 0:35:17And behind us is a cloakroom, and utility room,
0:35:17 > 0:35:18along this stretch of wall,
0:35:18 > 0:35:20which is already plumbed in
0:35:20 > 0:35:22and you can look at adding a shower in there,
0:35:22 > 0:35:25and then you have that perfect downstairs bathroom,
0:35:25 > 0:35:28- so you could investigate that as an option.- Yes.
0:35:28 > 0:35:30This house may be a period property,
0:35:30 > 0:35:33but its fine proportions and excellent flow
0:35:33 > 0:35:36could provide an appealing option for Janet and Jeff.
0:35:36 > 0:35:37And at the back of the property
0:35:37 > 0:35:40is a fantastic farmhouse-style kitchen/diner
0:35:40 > 0:35:44with access to the garden and adjacent parking spaces.
0:35:45 > 0:35:49Oh, my word. Oh, look at the flagstones.
0:35:49 > 0:35:51The original farmhouse floor.
0:35:51 > 0:35:56A kitchen that has been restored so lovingly,
0:35:56 > 0:35:59and you have your range.
0:35:59 > 0:36:01You've got your dining space behind you.
0:36:01 > 0:36:04- It's very nice.- I do like the fact that they do run into each other,
0:36:04 > 0:36:06and it's a different character from the kitchen.
0:36:06 > 0:36:09They are separately defined spaces.
0:36:09 > 0:36:12And then in this wonderful old farmhouse kitchen,
0:36:12 > 0:36:15running the entire length of the kitchen and dining area,
0:36:15 > 0:36:17you have a basement room.
0:36:17 > 0:36:20So for guests, friends, family coming to stay,
0:36:20 > 0:36:23it also has a little bathroom downstairs, too.
0:36:23 > 0:36:26More places, either for storage, and a wonderful library,
0:36:26 > 0:36:28or just a lovely place for guests to visit.
0:36:28 > 0:36:32So lots of living space on the ground floor for you.
0:36:32 > 0:36:33Shall we take a look upstairs?
0:36:33 > 0:36:34- Yes, please.- OK.
0:36:37 > 0:36:40The winding stairway leads to the first floor,
0:36:40 > 0:36:44passing a wonderful picture window with views to the garden.
0:36:44 > 0:36:45Up on this floor, off a large landing,
0:36:45 > 0:36:49there's a bright, tiled family bathroom and four bedrooms.
0:36:49 > 0:36:52A spacious twin room lies at the back of the house,
0:36:52 > 0:36:55a double at the front with a pretty feature fireplace.
0:36:55 > 0:36:59And next door there's a smaller room used as a study.
0:36:59 > 0:37:01But we are on our way to the largest and most impressive
0:37:01 > 0:37:04of the four bedrooms, the master suite.
0:37:04 > 0:37:06It's lovely and big.
0:37:06 > 0:37:10- Lovely, big space. - And I love the fireplace.
0:37:10 > 0:37:11It's a beautiful-size room.
0:37:11 > 0:37:15Off this bedroom, you have an en suite, as well.
0:37:15 > 0:37:19Double sinks, and a lovely walk-in wardrobe.
0:37:19 > 0:37:21So you don't need wardrobes in here.
0:37:21 > 0:37:23No, you don't. Shall we keep taking a look?
0:37:23 > 0:37:25- Yes, please. - Let's explore those gardens.
0:37:25 > 0:37:28Maybe now is the time to start thinking about
0:37:28 > 0:37:30how much a house like this might be worth.
0:37:30 > 0:37:31Yes.
0:37:31 > 0:37:33- You don't want to leave, do you?- No.
0:37:34 > 0:37:37Right, come and tell me where you're going to move everything into.
0:37:37 > 0:37:39OK.
0:37:39 > 0:37:43Outside, there's a large garage, providing additional storage space,
0:37:43 > 0:37:45and there's also a workshop.
0:37:45 > 0:37:48We're heading to the grounds, which lie to the front of the house.
0:37:48 > 0:37:52The exceptional walled garden is filled with bursts of colour.
0:37:52 > 0:37:55There's also an immaculately manicured lawn
0:37:55 > 0:37:57surrounded by mature shrubs and trees.
0:37:57 > 0:37:59And beyond, in a further area of garden,
0:37:59 > 0:38:04an idyllic summerhouse in which to soak up the tranquil surroundings.
0:38:07 > 0:38:10That is quite a view of the property, isn't it?
0:38:10 > 0:38:11It's wonderful.
0:38:11 > 0:38:15And this land goes right up into that lovely viewing bench up there.
0:38:15 > 0:38:17And not too difficult to maintain.
0:38:17 > 0:38:20Mainly lawn in this area.
0:38:20 > 0:38:23- You are wondering about the price, I'm sure.- Yes.
0:38:23 > 0:38:26What do you think this property is on the market for?
0:38:26 > 0:38:29I think about £690,000.
0:38:29 > 0:38:32I shall go a bit higher than that.
0:38:32 > 0:38:36I think about £730,000.
0:38:36 > 0:38:38I have to say, Janet, you are closer.
0:38:38 > 0:38:41This property is on the market...
0:38:41 > 0:38:46for £695,000.
0:38:46 > 0:38:50Yes. I think it's a very nice amount, and it's a nice property.
0:38:50 > 0:38:53I get the sense you're itching to explore some more.
0:38:53 > 0:38:56I'm going to send you off. I shall enjoy this gorgeous view.
0:38:57 > 0:39:01This wonderful Georgian home is priced at £55,000
0:39:01 > 0:39:03under Janet and Jeff's budget.
0:39:03 > 0:39:06And with all its character and space,
0:39:06 > 0:39:08it's given them plenty to think about.
0:39:08 > 0:39:11It's got the farmhouse kitchen Janet was dreaming of
0:39:11 > 0:39:14and four good-sized bedrooms.
0:39:14 > 0:39:17Outside, the garden is not only beautiful,
0:39:17 > 0:39:21but also provides workspace options for both Janet and Jeff.
0:39:21 > 0:39:24- Oh!- Oh, look at this! - What a great space.
0:39:24 > 0:39:26- What room there is!- Yes.
0:39:26 > 0:39:29Oh, definitely library space.
0:39:29 > 0:39:33Oh, I think so. I think we might be able to fit all your books in here.
0:39:33 > 0:39:35I really like this house.
0:39:35 > 0:39:39As we approached it down the path, it was immediately a story house.
0:39:39 > 0:39:41It has a story of its own,
0:39:41 > 0:39:44but it looks like the typical sort of storybook house.
0:39:44 > 0:39:48I love the house. I love this symmetry as you approach the house.
0:39:48 > 0:39:50I love the size of the rooms.
0:39:50 > 0:39:51Nice, tall ceilings.
0:39:51 > 0:39:54Georgian windows, beautiful lights.
0:39:54 > 0:39:56The garden is very nice.
0:39:56 > 0:39:59Beautiful views from up there, particularly of the summerhouse.
0:39:59 > 0:40:02Very nice views across the valley to the local hills.
0:40:02 > 0:40:03We had hoped for a bungalow
0:40:03 > 0:40:06because obviously then it's living on the flat for everything.
0:40:06 > 0:40:10But this being a two-storey house, the main living we could do
0:40:10 > 0:40:11on the ground floor
0:40:11 > 0:40:15and having that other living room as a potential bedroom,
0:40:15 > 0:40:16so that at the point
0:40:16 > 0:40:19when I need to use downstairs as a bedroom, we can do.
0:40:21 > 0:40:23So, have you seen enough?
0:40:23 > 0:40:25- Yes.- We certainly had a good hunt around.
0:40:25 > 0:40:27All pretty positive?
0:40:27 > 0:40:29- Yes.- I think it's really good, very interesting.
0:40:29 > 0:40:32And we still have that mystery house to see.
0:40:32 > 0:40:33The mystery house.
0:40:33 > 0:40:34Come on.
0:40:40 > 0:40:43It's not just Janet who's drawn to seek inspiration
0:40:43 > 0:40:45from Devon's beautiful landscape.
0:40:45 > 0:40:49Many creatives past and present have links to the county,
0:40:49 > 0:40:53including Charles Dickens, Thomas Hardy and Jane Austen.
0:40:53 > 0:40:57But one novelist is synonymous with the south of the region,
0:40:57 > 0:41:00and that's crime writer Agatha Christie.
0:41:00 > 0:41:04Born in Torquay, she bought Greenway House near Brixham in 1938
0:41:04 > 0:41:06as a holiday retreat,
0:41:06 > 0:41:09a Georgian property with a Grade II-star listing.
0:41:09 > 0:41:11It sits on the banks of the River Dart,
0:41:11 > 0:41:15and Christie dubbed it, "The loveliest place in the world."
0:41:15 > 0:41:18In the year 2000, Christie's daughter gave Greenway
0:41:18 > 0:41:21to the National Trust and the property now welcomes
0:41:21 > 0:41:25over 100,000 visitors a year, plus overnight guests.
0:41:25 > 0:41:29I've come to meet house and collections manager Elaine Ward
0:41:29 > 0:41:32to find out more about the very private writer
0:41:32 > 0:41:37and her holiday hideaway, where she was known by her married name.
0:41:37 > 0:41:40She used to come here and escape from being Agatha Christie.
0:41:40 > 0:41:43She was Mrs Mallowan while she was here, she was part of the community,
0:41:43 > 0:41:45the school, children used to come in,
0:41:45 > 0:41:47gardeners here, the community.
0:41:47 > 0:41:49This is where she came to relax.
0:41:49 > 0:41:51So would we find the house in any of her books?
0:41:51 > 0:41:54We know it as Greenway, but many Agatha Christie fans
0:41:54 > 0:41:56will know it as Naase House in Dead Man's Folly.
0:41:56 > 0:41:58This is where the garden fete was happening,
0:41:58 > 0:42:01and also where the murder victim was found in the boathouse
0:42:01 > 0:42:02there down in the garden.
0:42:02 > 0:42:04So when you read Dead Man's Folly,
0:42:04 > 0:42:07and you're walking through the garden, walking through the house,
0:42:07 > 0:42:09you can see the story come alive.
0:42:09 > 0:42:13And was this always her holiday home until she passed away?
0:42:13 > 0:42:15She did own this house until she passed away.
0:42:15 > 0:42:17Obviously, subsequently, her daughter
0:42:17 > 0:42:19and her son-in-law, Anthony, took over this house,
0:42:19 > 0:42:22but she had this house until she passed away in 1976.
0:42:22 > 0:42:24Now the National Trust have taken over
0:42:24 > 0:42:26and we're keeping it in the spirit of Agatha Christie,
0:42:26 > 0:42:28as if she has just walked out into the garden.
0:42:31 > 0:42:33Well, not only is it an incredibly impressive house,
0:42:33 > 0:42:37I can understand why Agatha Christie would have loved this view so much.
0:42:37 > 0:42:39- Absolutely.- It is stunning.
0:42:41 > 0:42:44Greenway was built in the late 1700s.
0:42:44 > 0:42:46Agatha Christie had admired the striking property
0:42:46 > 0:42:48since she was a little girl.
0:42:48 > 0:42:50So when, as an adult, she saw it was up for sale,
0:42:50 > 0:42:53she knew it was her dream house.
0:42:53 > 0:42:57Today, its interior is just as it was in the 1950s.
0:42:57 > 0:42:59This is such a large room,
0:42:59 > 0:43:03and yet there's a sense of a really cosy atmosphere here.
0:43:03 > 0:43:05What would Agatha have used this room for?
0:43:05 > 0:43:06This is her drawing room.
0:43:06 > 0:43:09And they used to spend time in here relaxing with the family,
0:43:09 > 0:43:13mainly this area here is where they used to read her scripts.
0:43:13 > 0:43:15She used to sit here with her family reading the stories,
0:43:15 > 0:43:17reading the chapters.
0:43:17 > 0:43:19So she would actually sit here reading to her family?
0:43:19 > 0:43:21- Yes.- Sort of testing out the stories?
0:43:21 > 0:43:23- Yes, she would.- And are there any details in this room
0:43:23 > 0:43:24that are in her books?
0:43:24 > 0:43:28Absolutely. Again, Dead Man's Folly. Poirot was sitting here.
0:43:28 > 0:43:30They would come through the doorway here,
0:43:30 > 0:43:31and then one of the characters
0:43:31 > 0:43:33were leaving out through the French window over here.
0:43:33 > 0:43:36Also Mrs Stubbs would be sitting here,
0:43:36 > 0:43:39looking at her emerald ring with her arms stretched out,
0:43:39 > 0:43:42so you can just imagine her sitting here whilst she's looking at this.
0:43:42 > 0:43:45Are these actually the sofas that Agatha actually sat on,
0:43:45 > 0:43:47or have you just replicated everything?
0:43:47 > 0:43:48No, everything that is here
0:43:48 > 0:43:50actually belonged to Agatha Christie and her family.
0:43:50 > 0:43:53For instance, that's a desk she used to write at whilst she was here,
0:43:53 > 0:43:57drafting out plotlines, notebooks, that sort of thing.
0:43:57 > 0:43:59What in this room would I find in her books?
0:43:59 > 0:44:02Well, the small figurines over here that you can see,
0:44:02 > 0:44:04there's a little one called Harlequin.
0:44:04 > 0:44:08And most of the fans and readers of Agatha Christie would know
0:44:08 > 0:44:10The Mysteries of Harley Quin, was a gentleman in her books,
0:44:10 > 0:44:13so it's a play on the name of the harlequin figurine,
0:44:13 > 0:44:15to make out a name of Mr Harley Quin.
0:44:15 > 0:44:18So not only was this a getaway for her,
0:44:18 > 0:44:20- it was inspiration for Agatha? - Absolutely.
0:44:20 > 0:44:24This room is furnished from Christie's childhood home
0:44:24 > 0:44:29and the trinkets are collections from five generations of her family.
0:44:29 > 0:44:31The house certainly has a romantic feel about it,
0:44:31 > 0:44:35when you imagine one of the world's greatest crime authors relaxing here
0:44:35 > 0:44:38and soaking up the peaceful atmosphere,
0:44:38 > 0:44:41but there were times it wasn't quite as serene.
0:44:41 > 0:44:44Not long after Agatha Christie bought the house
0:44:44 > 0:44:45obviously World War II happened.
0:44:45 > 0:44:48During that time, this house was requisitioned
0:44:48 > 0:44:52for the American Coastguard and they used what we see as the library now
0:44:52 > 0:44:54- as their officers' mess.- So did she move out during that time...
0:44:54 > 0:44:56- She did.- ..or was she here making tea and coffee?
0:44:56 > 0:44:58No, she moved out during that time.
0:44:58 > 0:45:01They were here, they took over the house, they used to have the ships
0:45:01 > 0:45:04coming up and down the River Dart getting ready for D-Day
0:45:04 > 0:45:06and going over to Slapton Sands.
0:45:06 > 0:45:08So she allowed them to move into the house
0:45:08 > 0:45:11- and use it as a base?- Absolutely.
0:45:11 > 0:45:14This house is truly fascinating,
0:45:14 > 0:45:16a shrine to the revered writer,
0:45:16 > 0:45:19and you can feel her spirit all around.
0:45:19 > 0:45:22But outside in the grounds, her presence is felt, too.
0:45:22 > 0:45:27There are 272 acres here, which roll down to the river,
0:45:27 > 0:45:29where, by the water's edge, is the boathouse
0:45:29 > 0:45:32Christie and her family used to relax in,
0:45:32 > 0:45:37hold barbecues, swim and, of course, keep a small boat.
0:45:37 > 0:45:41It was yet another location featured in her novel Dead Man's Folly,
0:45:41 > 0:45:45where one of her characters met an untimely death.
0:45:47 > 0:45:49Well, this is a little different from the main house.
0:45:49 > 0:45:51What's going on here?
0:45:51 > 0:45:53As you can see, it's in a bit of a dilapidated state,
0:45:53 > 0:45:55so we are doing a building restoration here.
0:45:55 > 0:45:56Sadly, we've got...
0:45:58 > 0:46:00..plaster coming off the walls here.
0:46:00 > 0:46:04So is anything here as it would have been in Agatha's time?
0:46:04 > 0:46:07What you see in the building, you've got the fireplace there,
0:46:07 > 0:46:09that was here, obviously, when Agatha was here.
0:46:09 > 0:46:12- You've got some of the furniture. - Oh, this is hers?- Yeah, absolutely.
0:46:12 > 0:46:16This is her chair. This is where she used to sit and do some reading.
0:46:16 > 0:46:19So what are the unique challenges of renovating a property like this?
0:46:19 > 0:46:22Well, the boathouse gives us an initial challenge straightaway.
0:46:22 > 0:46:24We are right on the River Dart here,
0:46:24 > 0:46:28so with the environment, we have to put new lime plaster on the walls.
0:46:28 > 0:46:30We have to make sure that it's clean and dry
0:46:30 > 0:46:33and very warm to make sure that that plaster dries significantly,
0:46:33 > 0:46:36otherwise it all has to be taken off and started again.
0:46:36 > 0:46:38So it's a lot of research involved
0:46:38 > 0:46:40to make sure we use the correct materials.
0:46:40 > 0:46:42How long will it take before we can walk in here
0:46:42 > 0:46:44and see it as Agatha would have done?
0:46:44 > 0:46:45It could take up to two or three years
0:46:45 > 0:46:48because we've got different phases of what needs to happen.
0:46:48 > 0:46:51Currently we're working on phase one, which is outside.
0:46:51 > 0:46:54Phase two, we'll then start looking inside in this part of the building.
0:46:54 > 0:46:57Phase three, we'll start looking at the plunge pool underneath.
0:46:57 > 0:46:58We have one of those downstairs
0:46:58 > 0:47:00and it would be great to get that working again.
0:47:00 > 0:47:02Elaine, thank you so much for taking the time
0:47:02 > 0:47:04to let us come and explore.
0:47:04 > 0:47:07I know there's lots of work to be done, so I will let you get on.
0:47:07 > 0:47:08Thank you very much.
0:47:10 > 0:47:13From one fabulous Devon pad to another,
0:47:13 > 0:47:15but we've got to wait a little while
0:47:15 > 0:47:18to get to the bottom of our thriller today.
0:47:24 > 0:47:26Mystery house.
0:47:26 > 0:47:28What are you thinking we might show you?
0:47:28 > 0:47:31I think it's going to be a modern farm conversion.
0:47:33 > 0:47:35- Open-plan.- With a thatched roof?
0:47:37 > 0:47:38Possibly not.
0:47:39 > 0:47:41Well, you never know.
0:47:44 > 0:47:45For our last property,
0:47:45 > 0:47:47we're travelling to the village of Bigbury-on-Sea,
0:47:47 > 0:47:52also located in the South Devon Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty.
0:47:52 > 0:47:57Local amenities include a shop and a 16th-century pub and restaurant.
0:47:57 > 0:47:59Just under six miles north
0:47:59 > 0:48:02is the historic market town of Modbury, where a wider selection
0:48:02 > 0:48:05of independent shops and eateries can be found,
0:48:05 > 0:48:09including an attractive 14th-century coaching inn.
0:48:09 > 0:48:12A quarter-of-an-hour's drive takes us back to Bigbury-on-Sea
0:48:12 > 0:48:15and our mystery property,
0:48:15 > 0:48:18which is located behind a sweeping circular drive.
0:48:18 > 0:48:20Just 200 metres from the sea,
0:48:20 > 0:48:23it boasts a bird's-eye view of Burgh Island,
0:48:23 > 0:48:26a tidal island reached by foot at low tide
0:48:26 > 0:48:28and a sea tractor when the tide is high.
0:48:28 > 0:48:32It provided literary inspiration to Agatha Christie
0:48:32 > 0:48:37and also attracted Noel Coward to its Art Deco hotel in the 1930s.
0:48:37 > 0:48:41So here we are, our mystery house.
0:48:41 > 0:48:43- First impressions?- It's a bungalow.
0:48:43 > 0:48:45- Which is what you are after.- Yay.
0:48:45 > 0:48:48And it looks very big, it seems to go a long way back.
0:48:48 > 0:48:50- Yes.- It does.
0:48:50 > 0:48:53Any idea why it's our mystery house?
0:48:53 > 0:48:55Not yet.
0:48:55 > 0:48:59This particular house is our mystery house because it is two houses.
0:48:59 > 0:49:02- Two?- Two houses?- Two houses.
0:49:02 > 0:49:06So you have the main house here. And then the other house...
0:49:06 > 0:49:08You know you were talking about your writing groups,
0:49:08 > 0:49:11friends and family coming to stay? You could run it as a going concern,
0:49:11 > 0:49:13which is what the current owners do.
0:49:13 > 0:49:15They rent out this section of the house
0:49:15 > 0:49:17and live in the annexe at the back.
0:49:17 > 0:49:21- Oh.- What do you think of the idea of the two properties in one?
0:49:21 > 0:49:23I think it's got potential.
0:49:23 > 0:49:26- Should we see inside? Come on, let's do it.- Yes, please.
0:49:26 > 0:49:30This wonderfully located bungalow was originally built in the 1960s
0:49:30 > 0:49:36but was extended five years ago to create a self-contained annexe.
0:49:36 > 0:49:39We are entering via a hallway into the original part of the property,
0:49:39 > 0:49:42currently rented out for holidays by the present owners.
0:49:44 > 0:49:46So nice, big hall space.
0:49:46 > 0:49:50Already a couple of bookshelves up. Maybe room for more.
0:49:50 > 0:49:53- And then a lovely, big living area for you.- Oh, yes.
0:49:53 > 0:49:55It's a nice, big space.
0:49:55 > 0:49:58- It's ideal.- With those lovely views of Burgh Island.
0:49:58 > 0:50:00- Oh, yes.- Yes. Beautiful.
0:50:00 > 0:50:02Now that would be a great place to have a glass of something
0:50:02 > 0:50:04lovely in the evening, on that patio space there.
0:50:04 > 0:50:06Or first thing in the morning.
0:50:06 > 0:50:09Oh, first thing in the morning! I like your style.
0:50:09 > 0:50:11Our welcoming mystery house
0:50:11 > 0:50:13has already got Jeff's imagination working.
0:50:13 > 0:50:15Just behind us is a dining room area,
0:50:15 > 0:50:17off which is a beautifully finished kitchen
0:50:17 > 0:50:20with access to a small courtyard garden.
0:50:20 > 0:50:22And there's a utility room next door.
0:50:22 > 0:50:26Then, behind the kitchen is a nautically themed family bathroom,
0:50:26 > 0:50:28serving three double bedrooms.
0:50:28 > 0:50:30There's one with doors to the courtyard
0:50:30 > 0:50:32and a smart shower room.
0:50:32 > 0:50:34Next door is a twin,
0:50:34 > 0:50:36and another double is lucky enough
0:50:36 > 0:50:38to have views across to Burgh Island.
0:50:38 > 0:50:40That's the main bungalow,
0:50:40 > 0:50:43and next door is the adjoining annexe the current owners call home.
0:50:43 > 0:50:46It's just the other side of the courtyard.
0:50:46 > 0:50:49We are starting from the open-plan kitchen and living room,
0:50:49 > 0:50:52which takes up half of the property.
0:50:52 > 0:50:53It's very nice.
0:50:53 > 0:50:55Certainly nice.
0:50:55 > 0:50:57You could use this as maybe your writer's retreat
0:50:57 > 0:51:00and then have the main part of the property to yourselves.
0:51:00 > 0:51:03There is also a little office outside,
0:51:03 > 0:51:07which is a converted garage, which could be your man cave, Jeff,
0:51:07 > 0:51:08if you wanted.
0:51:08 > 0:51:11So, our mystery house does have lots of options for you.
0:51:11 > 0:51:14- Yes.- Should we go and see the master bedroom?- Yes, let's.
0:51:14 > 0:51:16The sleeping quarters just next door
0:51:16 > 0:51:18take up the other half of the annexe.
0:51:18 > 0:51:20So big, big room.
0:51:20 > 0:51:22Lovely cupboard space for both of you.
0:51:22 > 0:51:25You've got full built-in wardrobes there.
0:51:25 > 0:51:29Very large bathroom. Lovely walk-in shower.
0:51:29 > 0:51:31So a nice, big space for you in the annexe.
0:51:31 > 0:51:34Certainly, it's a beautiful master bedroom.
0:51:34 > 0:51:36And what about that view into the garden?
0:51:36 > 0:51:38- Yes.- Nice to wake up to that.
0:51:38 > 0:51:41When you are in bed, you can see all the way up the hill.
0:51:41 > 0:51:44Now you've had a look, should we head out into that garden?
0:51:44 > 0:51:46- Yes, please.- OK, come on.
0:51:46 > 0:51:50The main bungalow benefits from wonderful sea views.
0:51:50 > 0:51:53Behind the annexe is a stunning and expansive garden
0:51:53 > 0:51:56surrounded by fields and hilly countryside.
0:51:56 > 0:51:59The grounds are well kept with beautiful flowerbeds,
0:51:59 > 0:52:03mature trees, a kitchen garden and a greenhouse.
0:52:03 > 0:52:06There's also lapsed planning permission for a double garage,
0:52:06 > 0:52:09which could become Janet's longed-for library.
0:52:09 > 0:52:11It's worth coming up this tiered garden
0:52:11 > 0:52:16to catch that view of Burgh Island and the ocean.
0:52:16 > 0:52:17Just marvellous.
0:52:17 > 0:52:21I think it's easy maintenance, just the right size.
0:52:21 > 0:52:25So, easy to look after, even I might cut this grass.
0:52:25 > 0:52:28- So it would work for you? - It certainly would.
0:52:28 > 0:52:31You've seen the garden, the house. Now down to the price.
0:52:31 > 0:52:33Oh, the difficult bit.
0:52:33 > 0:52:35What do you think our mystery house is on the market for?
0:52:35 > 0:52:41I'm going, optimistically, at £720,000.
0:52:41 > 0:52:43OK. Janet?
0:52:43 > 0:52:46I would think around about £680,000.
0:52:46 > 0:52:49Take each of those offers, come halfway.
0:52:49 > 0:52:50700,000.
0:52:50 > 0:52:53- Right.- Offers in excess of 700,000.
0:52:53 > 0:52:54So you're both 20 out.
0:52:54 > 0:52:56- Yes.- Would you like to take another look at the house?
0:52:56 > 0:52:57- Yes.- Yes, please.- You do that.
0:52:57 > 0:52:59I'm going to take in the view a little bit longer.
0:52:59 > 0:53:01- Enjoy.- Thank you.
0:53:02 > 0:53:04This mystery property, with its bonus annexe,
0:53:04 > 0:53:08could leave Janet and Jeff with £50,000 in the kitty
0:53:08 > 0:53:10if they decide to make it theirs.
0:53:10 > 0:53:14It offers Janet accessible single-level living
0:53:14 > 0:53:17in a spacious home with more options than they could have dreamed of
0:53:17 > 0:53:19for housing Janet's library,
0:53:19 > 0:53:22as well as welcoming guests and holding workshops.
0:53:22 > 0:53:26And Jeff would have a photography room for himself.
0:53:26 > 0:53:28Outside, the garden is perfect for our pair
0:53:28 > 0:53:31and comes complete with spectacular views
0:53:31 > 0:53:34that are sure to inspire some of Janet's storytelling.
0:53:34 > 0:53:37Plus, it's close to amenities.
0:53:39 > 0:53:42Mystery house, it is very interesting.
0:53:42 > 0:53:47Being divided as two, it gives great potential in dividing up
0:53:47 > 0:53:49in the way that we want to use it.
0:53:49 > 0:53:52Garden - just a nice size.
0:53:52 > 0:53:56Just big enough for me to play around in and cut the grass,
0:53:56 > 0:53:59not too big that it becomes too much of a chore.
0:53:59 > 0:54:01I found the mystery house intriguing
0:54:01 > 0:54:03and I can see the possibility of living here.
0:54:03 > 0:54:06I can see how you might use it, how we might set it out.
0:54:06 > 0:54:09But I think, for me, I'd need to know more about the area
0:54:09 > 0:54:12before I could say, "Yes, definitely a contender."
0:54:12 > 0:54:14- You've had a good look round the mystery house?- Certainly have.
0:54:14 > 0:54:19- You've seen all the properties now. - Yes.- Yes.- Lots to think about.
0:54:19 > 0:54:21- Lots to think about.- Shall we find somewhere to have a coffee
0:54:21 > 0:54:24- and a chat?- Yes, please. - Let's do that, come on.
0:54:27 > 0:54:30Right, it's time to catch up with Janet and Jeff
0:54:30 > 0:54:33and find out what their next step is going to be,
0:54:33 > 0:54:35and, I have to admit, even at the end of our search,
0:54:35 > 0:54:40I'm not 100% sure in which direction they're heading.
0:54:43 > 0:54:45Janet, Jeff, do we have a frontrunner
0:54:45 > 0:54:47from all the properties we've seen?
0:54:47 > 0:54:52Well, I think there are two which sort of spoke to us more.
0:54:52 > 0:54:55That was the Georgian house and the mystery house.
0:54:55 > 0:54:58And what was it particularly about those two that you loved?
0:54:58 > 0:55:00I think in terms of the Georgian house,
0:55:00 > 0:55:05the size, the great rooms and the garden.
0:55:05 > 0:55:09In terms of the mystery, what a view!
0:55:09 > 0:55:11And, again, accommodation
0:55:11 > 0:55:15which could be tailored to our requirements.
0:55:15 > 0:55:18I'm a little bit surprised you went for the Georgian one so much,
0:55:18 > 0:55:20because it was a bit of a gamble to show it to you.
0:55:20 > 0:55:21It wasn't a bungalow
0:55:21 > 0:55:24and it had period features which you hadn't asked for.
0:55:24 > 0:55:26We'd been focusing on the bungalow
0:55:26 > 0:55:29because we'd been focusing on flat living and, yes,
0:55:29 > 0:55:31you have actually offered us
0:55:31 > 0:55:34a Georgian house with features on three levels,
0:55:34 > 0:55:38but it is possible just to live on the one level
0:55:38 > 0:55:42and so that does give me one-level living if I need it
0:55:42 > 0:55:45and with character and with that beautiful garden.
0:55:45 > 0:55:48So what might be the next step now for you?
0:55:48 > 0:55:51We're interested in both properties,
0:55:51 > 0:55:53so part of what we aim to do
0:55:53 > 0:55:55is to go back, have a look round the areas,
0:55:55 > 0:55:59find out more details about the kinds of things that go on.
0:55:59 > 0:56:00- So we have two great houses... - Mm-hm.
0:56:00 > 0:56:03Which of those properties is speaking to your heart
0:56:03 > 0:56:05and which one is speaking to your head?
0:56:05 > 0:56:09Um, to my heart, it's the Georgian house.
0:56:09 > 0:56:12Um, to my head, because it's much more practical,
0:56:12 > 0:56:14it's the mystery house.
0:56:14 > 0:56:17- And Jeff, is that the same for you? - I think it's the same for me.
0:56:17 > 0:56:21And will you go back for a second viewing on either of the properties?
0:56:21 > 0:56:24I think that's really subject to, you know, testing out the area,
0:56:24 > 0:56:28finding out more about the area, what the local facilities are.
0:56:28 > 0:56:31Well, I wish you all the best of luck with your continued search,
0:56:31 > 0:56:32and I look forward to coming and exploring,
0:56:32 > 0:56:35perhaps borrowing a book from your library very soon!
0:56:35 > 0:56:36You'll be very welcome.
0:56:36 > 0:56:39Perhaps you'll join Janet at one of her workshops there.
0:56:39 > 0:56:41- I'm in, I'm in. Sign me up now! - Come and tell a story.
0:56:47 > 0:56:50So we're at the end of a successful few days house-hunting
0:56:50 > 0:56:51here in Devon.
0:56:51 > 0:56:53I'm really pleased that we've managed to find Janet and Jeff
0:56:53 > 0:56:56two properties that they really liked.
0:56:56 > 0:56:58It just remains to be seen, in this particular tale,
0:56:58 > 0:57:01whether it's their heads or their hearts that will win out.
0:57:01 > 0:57:05See you next time on Escape To The Country.
0:57:05 > 0:57:08After a lot of thought, Janet and Jeff have decided
0:57:08 > 0:57:12to narrow their search to be closer to Sidmouth, but their eyes are now
0:57:12 > 0:57:16open to the possibility of living in a home with more than one level.
0:57:16 > 0:57:18If you would like to escape to the country
