0:00:02 > 0:00:03Welcome to Escape To The Country.
0:00:03 > 0:00:05Now, how about having one of these in your back garden?
0:00:05 > 0:00:08This beautiful folly was inspired by, some would argue, one of the
0:00:08 > 0:00:13greatest architects of all time, the Italian Andrea Paladio.
0:00:13 > 0:00:15But needless to say, we are not in Italy.
0:00:15 > 0:00:16So, where are we?
0:00:16 > 0:00:19Well, join me in just a moment and I'll tell you.
0:00:36 > 0:00:40Today's house-hunters are looking to swap life in the Med for a cosy life
0:00:40 > 0:00:41in the British countryside...
0:00:41 > 0:00:44I'm very happy.
0:00:44 > 0:00:47Yeah. Oh, oh, was that a very-happy-get-the-cheque-book-out?
0:00:47 > 0:00:48Yeah.
0:00:48 > 0:00:51..if our houses can convince them to make the move.
0:00:51 > 0:00:53I told you roughly exactly what I wanted,
0:00:53 > 0:00:56and you've found roughly exactly what I wanted.
0:00:56 > 0:00:57THEY LAUGH
0:01:01 > 0:01:02Well, today, we are in North Yorkshire,
0:01:02 > 0:01:06within the magnificent surroundings of the Castle Howard estate.
0:01:06 > 0:01:09And this is their Temple of the Four Winds.
0:01:09 > 0:01:11It was inspired by the Italian architect
0:01:11 > 0:01:16Andrea Paladio's building, the Villa Rotunda, just outside Vicenza.
0:01:16 > 0:01:21But this one was designed and built by the Englishman John Vanburgh.
0:01:21 > 0:01:24Now, it was of course during the 18th century that many estates right
0:01:24 > 0:01:28across the UK saw an explosion in the business of building follies
0:01:28 > 0:01:32just like this one, and that in itself was inspired
0:01:32 > 0:01:36by many a young nobleman's trip to Europe on the grand tour,
0:01:36 > 0:01:39to immerse themselves in the classical, cultural
0:01:39 > 0:01:41and architectural history
0:01:41 > 0:01:45that Europe had to offer, and this one is absolutely no exception.
0:01:45 > 0:01:50It is of course the perfect place to start our own grand tour of
0:01:50 > 0:01:51Yorkshire's property.
0:01:57 > 0:01:59North Yorkshire is the largest county in England,
0:01:59 > 0:02:03bordered by six other counties and the North Sea.
0:02:04 > 0:02:06Within this region lies the North York Moors
0:02:06 > 0:02:09and most of the Yorkshire Dales.
0:02:10 > 0:02:13At Helmsley, there are the ruins of a medieval castle,
0:02:13 > 0:02:16which was besieged during the English Civil War, when,
0:02:16 > 0:02:20after a three-month stand-off, Cromwell's men finally succeeded
0:02:20 > 0:02:22in blowing up the keep.
0:02:22 > 0:02:25In the 18th century, the growing towns
0:02:25 > 0:02:27and trade requirements of Yorkshire
0:02:27 > 0:02:29gave rise to the development of canals.
0:02:29 > 0:02:34The 127-mile man-made waterway of the Leeds and Liverpool Canal
0:02:34 > 0:02:37allowed limestone and coal to be transported,
0:02:37 > 0:02:39to meet the rising demand for lime,
0:02:39 > 0:02:42used in construction and agriculture.
0:02:42 > 0:02:46And on Greenhow Hill lie the remains of Toft Gate Kiln,
0:02:46 > 0:02:50which was built in the 1860s to produce quicklime.
0:02:50 > 0:02:51No longer used for industry,
0:02:51 > 0:02:54the canal system now provides a pretty feature in settlements
0:02:54 > 0:02:56such as Hebden Bridge.
0:02:56 > 0:02:59Originally a river crossing for pack horses laden with
0:02:59 > 0:03:01cloth and food, the stone bridge dates
0:03:01 > 0:03:05to the early part of the 16th century.
0:03:05 > 0:03:09The 1970s and 1980s saw an influx of artists and writers,
0:03:09 > 0:03:13and the market town is now filled with artisan shops and cafes.
0:03:16 > 0:03:19So whether you're interested in medieval ruins, industrial heritage
0:03:19 > 0:03:24or a bite to eat, North Yorkshire has plenty to offer.
0:03:31 > 0:03:33Now, currently the average price of a detached property here,
0:03:33 > 0:03:37in North Yorkshire, is just under £310,000.
0:03:37 > 0:03:40That's some £15,000 below the national figure.
0:03:40 > 0:03:44But, that said, it is the most expensive part of Yorkshire
0:03:44 > 0:03:46as a whole, and the reason is simple.
0:03:46 > 0:03:52Some 40% of this region is covered by not one but two National Parks,
0:03:52 > 0:03:56which means it's also therefore the least industrialised part of
0:03:56 > 0:03:59Yorkshire. As a result, you get loads of lovely landscape
0:03:59 > 0:04:01and loads of wonderful property to choose from,
0:04:01 > 0:04:04which is why today's buyers have decided to make a return
0:04:04 > 0:04:08to Yorkshire as they look for their brand-new home in the country.
0:04:09 > 0:04:14And it was on Yorkshire's turf where Robin and Pauline met 36 years ago,
0:04:14 > 0:04:17when Pauline was working as a nurse and Robin, a trainee supermarket
0:04:17 > 0:04:21- manager.- I met her through her brother, who is my best friend.
0:04:22 > 0:04:26- He was your best man.- And he was my best man at our wedding as well.
0:04:26 > 0:04:28She was out in Mexico, visiting her parents,
0:04:28 > 0:04:33and she turned up in their study one day, and I just thought, "Boom!"
0:04:33 > 0:04:36- Oh.- We have one son, Jack,
0:04:36 > 0:04:39who was educated in the UK even though we lived abroad,
0:04:39 > 0:04:43and now he works in Canada, hopefully on his way back to Europe.
0:04:45 > 0:04:47Despite being born and bred in Yorkshire,
0:04:47 > 0:04:50Pauline and Robin spent married life living elsewhere.
0:04:50 > 0:04:51For the past decade,
0:04:51 > 0:04:54they've been based on the Spanish island of Majorca,
0:04:54 > 0:04:56but although benefiting from idyllic surroundings,
0:04:56 > 0:04:58they feel that something is missing.
0:04:58 > 0:05:00We live in the country.
0:05:00 > 0:05:01We don't have people anywhere near us.
0:05:01 > 0:05:03We do have neighbours,
0:05:03 > 0:05:06but they are an acre, or five, or ten, away from us.
0:05:06 > 0:05:09In Majorca, we sit on over seven acres.
0:05:09 > 0:05:10We don't need that space.
0:05:10 > 0:05:12We've got a very large, sprawling house.
0:05:12 > 0:05:14We don't need that now.
0:05:14 > 0:05:16I want neighbours, I want to be in a village.
0:05:16 > 0:05:20We miss England, family, friends,
0:05:20 > 0:05:22all that whole package.
0:05:24 > 0:05:27And when it comes to returning back to Blighty, there's only one area
0:05:27 > 0:05:30- that really cut it.- I think once you are a Yorkshire person,
0:05:30 > 0:05:32you're always a Yorkshire person.
0:05:32 > 0:05:34We've got a very emotional connection with the county.
0:05:34 > 0:05:38For me, the countryside is just so beautiful, so green,
0:05:38 > 0:05:41and it's undulating, it's interesting.
0:05:41 > 0:05:44And for me it's the people, I think, as well.
0:05:44 > 0:05:47It's the culture of the Yorkshire people,
0:05:47 > 0:05:51which is my DNA, and I miss it.
0:05:51 > 0:05:54The plan is that their return to the motherland will also herald a
0:05:54 > 0:05:56different way of life.
0:05:56 > 0:05:59I want to get involved a little bit with the community,
0:05:59 > 0:06:01maybe do some voluntary work.
0:06:01 > 0:06:04I would really love to do some voluntary nursing,
0:06:04 > 0:06:05cos I used to be a nurse.
0:06:05 > 0:06:10Just becoming more of an English community lady, really.
0:06:10 > 0:06:15We really want to do things like join the rambling society
0:06:15 > 0:06:18and pick sloes and your brambles in autumn.
0:06:18 > 0:06:20Maybe do a cooking course together.
0:06:20 > 0:06:21- Yeah.- Of good Yorkshire cooking.
0:06:21 > 0:06:23It's a great cuisine.
0:06:23 > 0:06:26And these things we just don't have in Spain, so we're raring to go.
0:06:28 > 0:06:31But most importantly, it's about finding their forever home.
0:06:31 > 0:06:35We've moved so many times, probably about 13 times,
0:06:35 > 0:06:39and hopefully this will be the last, so this will count.
0:06:39 > 0:06:41This really is the full circle, we feel.
0:06:41 > 0:06:42Home is home.
0:06:51 > 0:06:54Robin and Pauline are open to living anywhere in the North Yorkshire
0:06:54 > 0:06:57countryside that is within reach of a market town,
0:06:57 > 0:06:59but before we start looking at houses,
0:06:59 > 0:07:01I'm welcoming them back to Yorkshire
0:07:01 > 0:07:04to discuss the type of property they are hoping to find.
0:07:05 > 0:07:07- Hello, Pauline.- Hello.
0:07:07 > 0:07:09Very nice to see you.
0:07:09 > 0:07:10Hello, Robin, nice to see you.
0:07:10 > 0:07:12Well, guys, welcome back to Yorkshire.
0:07:12 > 0:07:14Cos this is where it all started for you, isn't it?
0:07:14 > 0:07:17- It is.- Mm-hm. I know you were both born here,
0:07:17 > 0:07:19not a million miles away from where we are at the moment.
0:07:19 > 0:07:22Do you feel that draw of the old home country?
0:07:22 > 0:07:23Oh, yeah, definitely.
0:07:23 > 0:07:27I can't wait for it. I'm almost yearning for colder days,
0:07:27 > 0:07:31rainy days, where you just batten your hatches, stay in or wrap up,
0:07:31 > 0:07:32go out for a lovely walk.
0:07:32 > 0:07:35So there is something about the seasonal aspect
0:07:35 > 0:07:38to living in the UK that's obviously tempting you as well.
0:07:38 > 0:07:39Yeah, definitely.
0:07:39 > 0:07:41Really very much so.
0:07:41 > 0:07:43Now, you've already had a chance to look online
0:07:43 > 0:07:46at the sort of properties that might work for you.
0:07:46 > 0:07:49Can you describe your ideal Yorkshire home?
0:07:49 > 0:07:53Well, I love sort of traditional old buildings,
0:07:53 > 0:07:56which have either been renovated and they're really nice inside,
0:07:56 > 0:08:00big reception rooms, I love halls with stone floors.
0:08:00 > 0:08:03We love to cook, so a good kitchen is important for us.
0:08:03 > 0:08:05- Mm-hm.- I mean, currently you've got seven acres in Majorca.
0:08:05 > 0:08:07- Yeah, we have. - Do you need seven acres here?
0:08:07 > 0:08:09Certainly not. We'd like a decent garden.
0:08:09 > 0:08:11We have dogs, we want somewhere we can stretch our legs a bit,
0:08:11 > 0:08:13but we certainly don't need the size of that.
0:08:13 > 0:08:15Let's talk about the budget, then, Robin.
0:08:15 > 0:08:17How much do you want to spend on this move?
0:08:17 > 0:08:19Well, about 700.
0:08:19 > 0:08:22£700,000, I mean, it's a meaty sum of money.
0:08:22 > 0:08:26Yeah, and our first house in Yorkshire was 13,000.
0:08:26 > 0:08:2913,000, wow, how times have changed.
0:08:29 > 0:08:31- And we were delighted with it! - Yeah, loved it.- Well,
0:08:31 > 0:08:32let's hope we can find you something
0:08:32 > 0:08:35that you will be equally as delighted with this week.
0:08:35 > 0:08:38- So, I think we should get going. - Brilliant.- Yes!
0:08:40 > 0:08:44Pauline and Robin have a budget of up to £700,000 to find their home
0:08:44 > 0:08:46back in Yorkshire.
0:08:46 > 0:08:50They'd like a traditional building with large reception rooms,
0:08:50 > 0:08:52a big kitchen, a reasonable-sized garden for the dogs,
0:08:52 > 0:08:55and somewhere with community on their doorstep.
0:08:55 > 0:08:59We've selected a great choice of houses to show them,
0:08:59 > 0:09:02each offering a different take on their wish list.
0:09:02 > 0:09:05After every viewing, I'll be asking them to guess the price
0:09:05 > 0:09:06before I reveal it.
0:09:07 > 0:09:10Our final property will be the Mystery House,
0:09:10 > 0:09:14where we'll be pulling out all the stops to pull on their heartstrings.
0:09:23 > 0:09:26We are starting our search in the small village of Harome.
0:09:27 > 0:09:30Located in the Ryedale district of North Yorkshire,
0:09:30 > 0:09:33its name simply means "stones".
0:09:33 > 0:09:35And there are stone-built period homes throughout the village,
0:09:35 > 0:09:37many of which are listed.
0:09:38 > 0:09:41The local church was completed in 1862 and designed by
0:09:41 > 0:09:44Charles Barry Jr.
0:09:44 > 0:09:45The son of the architect responsible
0:09:45 > 0:09:47for the rebuilt Houses of Parliament,
0:09:47 > 0:09:49he evidently shared some
0:09:49 > 0:09:51of his father's Victorian Gothic influence.
0:09:54 > 0:09:57Facilities in the village include a country hotel serving meals,
0:09:57 > 0:09:59from where it's just a six-minute walk
0:09:59 > 0:10:01to the property we've come to see.
0:10:03 > 0:10:06Well, I don't think anything is quite as quintessentially English
0:10:06 > 0:10:10in terms of its architecture as a thatch, so how about that one?
0:10:10 > 0:10:11Impressive, I like it.
0:10:11 > 0:10:13On the outside, so far so good.
0:10:13 > 0:10:16- Yeah.- The nice thing about this one is that it's only 13 years old.
0:10:16 > 0:10:19Really? Doesn't look it, does it? It looks like a very old property.
0:10:19 > 0:10:22And as a result, it's got modern proportions,
0:10:22 > 0:10:26which you don't always find in what looks like a period property,
0:10:26 > 0:10:28particularly with a thatched roof.
0:10:28 > 0:10:30- Lovely.- Come on, let's have a look inside.- Come on.
0:10:31 > 0:10:35This modern-build character property has been thatched with reed,
0:10:35 > 0:10:37an alternative material to straw,
0:10:37 > 0:10:41although the ridge will need attending to every 20 years or so.
0:10:42 > 0:10:44Pauline and Robin have said they want to downsize,
0:10:44 > 0:10:47but let's see if that plays out as we start our tour.
0:10:50 > 0:10:52Very grand big door.
0:10:52 > 0:10:53- Oh.- Come on into here.
0:10:54 > 0:10:55- Oh.- There.
0:10:55 > 0:10:57What do you think?
0:10:57 > 0:10:59Nice first impression.
0:10:59 > 0:11:01- I'm drawn towards the kitchen. - Are you? I was going to give you
0:11:01 > 0:11:04a choice as to whether we went that way, into the living room first,
0:11:04 > 0:11:05or that way, into the kitchen,
0:11:05 > 0:11:07but you've probably answered that question.
0:11:07 > 0:11:09- Much obliged.- Right, come on, then.
0:11:09 > 0:11:10Let's have a look in here.
0:11:11 > 0:11:13Mm.
0:11:13 > 0:11:15- Your thoughts?- It's quite...
0:11:16 > 0:11:20- ..smallish, I think.- You see, I was waiting for the "small" word.
0:11:20 > 0:11:23Yeah, it's smaller than what we had envisaged.
0:11:23 > 0:11:27I mean, it's a beautifully done kitchen, that's for sure,
0:11:27 > 0:11:30but for us it's just not the space we're after.
0:11:30 > 0:11:33I mean, you have got quite a big utility area through there -
0:11:33 > 0:11:35coat/boot room, dog room.
0:11:35 > 0:11:38- Yeah.- Downstairs loo, etc.
0:11:38 > 0:11:40I mean, you have got a separate dining room across the hallway.
0:11:40 > 0:11:42Let's have a quick peek in the living room.
0:11:42 > 0:11:44- OK, after you.- Let's go forth.
0:11:44 > 0:11:50- Darling.- So a downsize too far so far for these Yorkshire returnees,
0:11:50 > 0:11:53but let's see what they make of the rest as we head to the rear,
0:11:53 > 0:11:56where a sizeable reception room offers triple aspect.
0:11:56 > 0:11:58Mm!
0:11:58 > 0:12:00Lovely. Very nice room.
0:12:00 > 0:12:02- Nice and light.- Big enough?
0:12:02 > 0:12:04I think the size is big enough for me.
0:12:04 > 0:12:06I would like a little bigger room.
0:12:06 > 0:12:09- Yeah.- I must admit.
0:12:09 > 0:12:12There may be some readjusting from those Mediterranean proportions of
0:12:12 > 0:12:16Majorca to those of a typical Yorkshire country home,
0:12:16 > 0:12:20but upstairs there is one more bedroom than they asked for.
0:12:20 > 0:12:24There are four in total, each with its own en suite.
0:12:24 > 0:12:27A corner room is filled with light from two aspects
0:12:27 > 0:12:29and comes with its own shower room.
0:12:29 > 0:12:31Behind this is another guest room,
0:12:31 > 0:12:33also with an en-suite shower room.
0:12:34 > 0:12:38A fully tiled family bathroom features a roll-top bath
0:12:38 > 0:12:39and shower cubicle,
0:12:39 > 0:12:42and this also acts as a Jack and Jill en suite
0:12:42 > 0:12:44for the largest bedroom.
0:12:44 > 0:12:46Then there's the room we've earmarked for them.
0:12:48 > 0:12:51Now, because all of these bedrooms have en suites,
0:12:51 > 0:12:52trying to pick a master...
0:12:53 > 0:12:55..is anyone's guess, really.
0:12:55 > 0:12:58I've gone for this one. It's perhaps not the biggest, but it has a very,
0:12:58 > 0:13:01very generous en suite, with a very funky shower arrangement.
0:13:01 > 0:13:03I think in terms of proportions...
0:13:03 > 0:13:05- Nice sizes.- ..it kind of works.
0:13:05 > 0:13:08Quite unusual to find a house with four bedroom en suites.
0:13:08 > 0:13:11The joy of this one to me is what it offers you upstairs, in particular.
0:13:11 > 0:13:13Yeah, you can tell the house has a lot of love in it.
0:13:13 > 0:13:17It's been very well made. It feels warm, it feels well insulated,
0:13:17 > 0:13:18- lived in.- OK,
0:13:18 > 0:13:22let's just finish off in the garden and we'll talk about the price,
0:13:22 > 0:13:25because we are reintroducing you to the property market here,
0:13:25 > 0:13:28so it will be interesting to see what you make of this one.
0:13:30 > 0:13:33So a mixed response to our first Yorkshire offering,
0:13:33 > 0:13:36and outside, the grounds are a good deal more modest
0:13:36 > 0:13:37than the seven acres
0:13:37 > 0:13:41they are used to. An integrated double garage is found to the front,
0:13:41 > 0:13:45whilst at the rear there is a secluded south-facing patio
0:13:45 > 0:13:48and a large lawn, surrounded by mature shrubs and trees.
0:13:49 > 0:13:52I am taking seriously this idea that you want it to be a little more
0:13:52 > 0:13:55manageable, but size wise, Robin?
0:13:55 > 0:13:58I think it's a bit too shrunk.
0:13:58 > 0:13:59- Is it? OK.- For me.
0:13:59 > 0:14:01It's nicely done, it's got some lovely things in it,
0:14:01 > 0:14:04but with that the dogs I think it would be a bit too tight.
0:14:04 > 0:14:06I find it quite manageable. You know,
0:14:06 > 0:14:08as we get a bit older, we'll want to do less and less.
0:14:08 > 0:14:10But of course you would do, sorry to interrupt,
0:14:10 > 0:14:11cos it's me that's managing it.
0:14:11 > 0:14:14THEY LAUGH
0:14:14 > 0:14:17I can see this is a debate that's gone on for some years.
0:14:17 > 0:14:19I'm going to park that one for just a moment because I really
0:14:19 > 0:14:22want to get onto what you think this might be on the market for.
0:14:22 > 0:14:29Oh, erm, I would say probably 695.
0:14:29 > 0:14:30695, yeah.
0:14:30 > 0:14:32I think we're pretty up there.
0:14:32 > 0:14:33Mm-hm.
0:14:33 > 0:14:34I'm going to go for 600.
0:14:34 > 0:14:37Well, I can happily report that you're both a little bit
0:14:37 > 0:14:39out of touch on this occasion,
0:14:39 > 0:14:43because this is on the market for £578,000.
0:14:43 > 0:14:45- Crikey, that surprises me. - I'm very surprised, yeah.
0:14:45 > 0:14:48- Very. A great start, I think. - Yeah, I'm very optimistic.
0:14:48 > 0:14:50- Very good.- Right, then, off you go, have a look around,
0:14:50 > 0:14:53see what you get for your money. I'll find you a little bit later on.
0:14:53 > 0:14:54- Thank you.- Thanks, Jules.
0:14:54 > 0:14:57This recently built thatched home
0:14:57 > 0:15:01is an impressive £120,000 below budget,
0:15:01 > 0:15:03yet offers a country kitchen and breakfast room
0:15:03 > 0:15:07and two further reception rooms, all with underfloor heating.
0:15:08 > 0:15:12Plus, there are four en-suite double bedrooms, and the low-maintenance
0:15:12 > 0:15:13garden is south facing.
0:15:15 > 0:15:17- Mm.- So dining room, I presume.
0:15:17 > 0:15:20Mm, wouldn't use it as a dining room though, would we?
0:15:20 > 0:15:21Or would we have it as a snug?
0:15:21 > 0:15:22Maybe a snug, yeah.
0:15:22 > 0:15:25Yeah? I mean, I love the views out the front.
0:15:25 > 0:15:26I mean, that is Yorkshire for me.
0:15:26 > 0:15:28Across the fields, out onto the woods.
0:15:28 > 0:15:32- Beautiful.- Scale-wise, some of the rooms, we'd need a bigger size.
0:15:32 > 0:15:35That's what we're after. But it's very light.
0:15:35 > 0:15:36I love the finish of it.
0:15:36 > 0:15:38Somebody's really cared for this house.
0:15:38 > 0:15:41It's been done very nicely downstairs and upstairs.
0:15:41 > 0:15:42I like the garden.
0:15:42 > 0:15:45I love the idea of having a few mature trees in there.
0:15:45 > 0:15:48Garden size, it's nice, yeah.
0:15:48 > 0:15:49But I need something larger.
0:15:49 > 0:15:51For us, I think, you know,
0:15:51 > 0:15:54coming back to England, looking for that quintessential house,
0:15:54 > 0:15:59we're more into something old-ish, something that, perhaps,
0:15:59 > 0:16:01has been renovated inside...
0:16:03 > 0:16:05..and got a bit more soul, a bit more character.
0:16:05 > 0:16:07Right.
0:16:07 > 0:16:09We've got to get cracking, chaps.
0:16:09 > 0:16:10- All done?- Yeah.- Yeah.
0:16:10 > 0:16:13Excellent, OK. So, that was the first one.
0:16:13 > 0:16:16Well, good job there's a few more on the list, I suppose.
0:16:16 > 0:16:18- Come on, let's go.- Thanks very much. - Thanks.
0:16:26 > 0:16:28With a landscape rich in agriculture,
0:16:28 > 0:16:30Yorkshire is a culinary heaven,
0:16:30 > 0:16:32perfect for savouring local produce,
0:16:32 > 0:16:35which hasn't had to travel far from ground to plate.
0:16:37 > 0:16:38And staying in the village of Harome,
0:16:38 > 0:16:41just a stone's throw from our first property,
0:16:41 > 0:16:45keen cooks Pauline and Robin have come to the 14th-century
0:16:45 > 0:16:47Star Inn for a cookery lesson.
0:16:47 > 0:16:51Here, chef and proud Yorkshireman Andrew Pern has held a Michelin star
0:16:51 > 0:16:55for 13 years, in recognition of his modern Yorkshire cuisine.
0:16:55 > 0:16:58You've got an inspirational garden here, I must say.
0:16:58 > 0:17:00What have you actually got growing here?
0:17:00 > 0:17:03Growing in the garden this time of year, I mean obviously,
0:17:03 > 0:17:05we're into the darker months if you'd like.
0:17:05 > 0:17:09We've got some of the brassicas down at the far end. The red curly kale.
0:17:09 > 0:17:10We've got some pumpkins, some squashes.
0:17:10 > 0:17:13We have here 15 varieties of apple within the garden,
0:17:13 > 0:17:15all native to Yorkshire.
0:17:15 > 0:17:17And the world-famous rhubarb from Yorkshire.
0:17:17 > 0:17:19And what are we cooking today?
0:17:19 > 0:17:22Today, we are cooking a saddle of venison from local estates,
0:17:22 > 0:17:25- from where we are here.- Lovely.
0:17:25 > 0:17:28Everything grown here is used solely in the restaurant's kitchen.
0:17:30 > 0:17:32This is the venison. Very healthy.
0:17:32 > 0:17:34You see there is no fat in there at all, really.
0:17:34 > 0:17:37- No marbling at all, no.- No, exactly. With it being without fat,
0:17:37 > 0:17:38it doesn't baste itself, the meat,
0:17:38 > 0:17:40so you need to undercook it a bit more,
0:17:40 > 0:17:42so a sort of rare, medium rare, is about right.
0:17:42 > 0:17:45But you'd recommend that at home as well, the same principle?
0:17:45 > 0:17:49- Definitely.- Andrew sprinkles ground black pepper on the meat before
0:17:49 > 0:17:52rubbing in a little salt and placing it into a hot pan.
0:17:52 > 0:17:54Two or three minutes each side.
0:17:56 > 0:17:59Then in goes a dash of sherry to caramelise it.
0:18:04 > 0:18:07OK, so for the sauce... going to reduce down some port.
0:18:09 > 0:18:12Splash of red wine. And here we've got some orange zest,
0:18:12 > 0:18:14which is slightly caramelised.
0:18:14 > 0:18:18And joining the meat are baby leeks and carrots to char in the pan.
0:18:19 > 0:18:22Tip him up under here, and we're all ready to go.
0:18:22 > 0:18:25- OK?- Smells fantastic.- It does.
0:18:25 > 0:18:28Once a good handful of kale has cooked down,
0:18:28 > 0:18:29the dish is ready to be plated
0:18:29 > 0:18:31for Pauline and Robin to sample.
0:18:33 > 0:18:37Reduced mulled wine is squeezed onto the plate, along with some parkin,
0:18:37 > 0:18:41which is a type of fruit cake and a local speciality.
0:18:41 > 0:18:45Next, it's the venison and veg and creamy kale.
0:18:50 > 0:18:53- Mm.- Nice?- Wow.- Perfect.
0:18:53 > 0:18:55- That is lovely.- Do you see what I mean about the rich flavours?
0:18:55 > 0:18:57- Mm.- It's like comfort food at its best, isn't it?
0:18:57 > 0:18:59- That is so good.- Fantastic.
0:18:59 > 0:19:01- That's all right. That's what I'm here for.- Thank you so much.
0:19:01 > 0:19:04Thank you for visiting. I hope you find somewhere nice in the area.
0:19:04 > 0:19:06- Thank you.- I do, we'll be back.
0:19:08 > 0:19:12So, after an authentic taste of home-grown Yorkshire fare,
0:19:12 > 0:19:14we're back on the house-hunt.
0:19:23 > 0:19:27We're taking our search to the village of Pickhill.
0:19:27 > 0:19:30Located in the Hambleton district of North Yorkshire,
0:19:30 > 0:19:34in Victorian times, brick and tile houses grouped around an irregular
0:19:34 > 0:19:37hollow, which later formed the village green.
0:19:37 > 0:19:38To the north-eastern side,
0:19:38 > 0:19:42the village church dates to the 12th century and
0:19:42 > 0:19:45features Norman arches at the door and entry to the chancel.
0:19:45 > 0:19:48Facilities here include a country inn with restaurant
0:19:48 > 0:19:51that's just a short distance from the house we've come to view.
0:19:53 > 0:19:59Right, come in and have a look at this, because this is quite unusual.
0:19:59 > 0:20:01- That's lovely.- Very nice from the outside, this.
0:20:01 > 0:20:02- Very nice.- This is the old bit.
0:20:02 > 0:20:04So this is about 1780.
0:20:04 > 0:20:07You can probably just about make out the original positioning
0:20:07 > 0:20:10of the front door there. And then, rather cleverly, they've added
0:20:10 > 0:20:13effectively as much again to the left,
0:20:13 > 0:20:16graced with that fabulous oak porch.
0:20:16 > 0:20:21And the whole thing now forms a courtyard property behind it,
0:20:21 > 0:20:23- so it's a U-shape.- Oh, OK.
0:20:23 > 0:20:26- Mm.- All right? Only recently finished, so it's all brand-new.
0:20:26 > 0:20:30- It looks great from the outside. - Yeah, looking forward to seeing it.
0:20:30 > 0:20:32- I think this could... - I do.- ..ring a few bells.
0:20:32 > 0:20:35- I'm hoping.- Are you? - Yeah. Let's have a look inside.
0:20:35 > 0:20:36- Come on.- Come on.
0:20:36 > 0:20:38A promising arrival,
0:20:38 > 0:20:41and we start our tour inside this recently renovated
0:20:41 > 0:20:44period home via a bright central entrance hall.
0:20:45 > 0:20:49We're heading into the newer wing, where a kitchen/breakfast room
0:20:49 > 0:20:52opens out to a dining area and sunroom.
0:20:54 > 0:20:57So, I'm hoping that this is the sort of kitchen...
0:20:58 > 0:21:00..that you were thinking of. Look, the thumbs are up.
0:21:00 > 0:21:02Come over here because, again,
0:21:02 > 0:21:06you get the idea of how they've created this U-shaped arrangement,
0:21:06 > 0:21:09this sort of dining area, family space up there too...
0:21:09 > 0:21:12- Yeah.- ..connecting it to this rather lovely kitchen,
0:21:12 > 0:21:15- which I think is kind of you. - It's really nice.
0:21:15 > 0:21:17- I love it. - You want me to buy it now?
0:21:18 > 0:21:20This is exciting.
0:21:20 > 0:21:22- It's beautiful.- Yeah. Very pleasing to the eye.
0:21:22 > 0:21:25It's giving you modern proportions in terms of the kitchen.
0:21:25 > 0:21:28- Yeah, very modern.- And the way this sort of family wing works.
0:21:28 > 0:21:30And this is what we're searching for.
0:21:30 > 0:21:31This flow for us I think really fits...
0:21:31 > 0:21:33- Yeah, it works.- Works.- Mm-hm.
0:21:33 > 0:21:36- No, I'm...very happy.- Yeah.
0:21:36 > 0:21:39Oh, was that a very-happy-get-the-cheque-book-out?
0:21:39 > 0:21:40Yeah, OK.
0:21:40 > 0:21:43Well, if you like this, I think you'll love the rest of it.
0:21:43 > 0:21:45Let's go and have a look at the 18th century, that's through here.
0:21:45 > 0:21:47Let's go back in time.
0:21:47 > 0:21:50So, a great start, thanks to the spacious rooms
0:21:50 > 0:21:52in the newer part of this home.
0:21:52 > 0:21:54Back across in the original half,
0:21:54 > 0:21:57two areas have been knocked together
0:21:57 > 0:22:01- to provide a generous reception room.- Mm.
0:22:01 > 0:22:03Wow. It's a nice big room, though, isn't it?
0:22:03 > 0:22:05- Lovely.- Yeah? - For such an old property.
0:22:05 > 0:22:07- Oh, look at the fire.- Yes, you see.
0:22:07 > 0:22:10Oh, yeah. And I like the simplicity of that fire, too.
0:22:10 > 0:22:13- Yeah, it is.- Yeah.- And I love the height of the windows.
0:22:13 > 0:22:16When you're sitting down, you've just got a clear view outside there.
0:22:16 > 0:22:19No, lovely. You've done well.
0:22:19 > 0:22:20- Yes?- Mm-hm.
0:22:20 > 0:22:22- I could see you here, actually. - Yeah, I like it.
0:22:23 > 0:22:26The remainder of this wing provides more reception space.
0:22:26 > 0:22:30There's a study with doors out to the rear courtyard,
0:22:30 > 0:22:32and a games room.
0:22:32 > 0:22:35The ground floor also has a utility room next to a cloakroom.
0:22:36 > 0:22:39Back in the sitting room, stairs lead up to the five-bedroomed
0:22:39 > 0:22:40accommodation.
0:22:42 > 0:22:44The largest of the guest bedrooms sits under the eaves.
0:22:46 > 0:22:48Then there are two further good-sized
0:22:48 > 0:22:50bright and comfortable guest doubles,
0:22:50 > 0:22:52and a smaller single bedroom.
0:22:52 > 0:22:56The family bathroom comes with a corner shower and bath,
0:22:56 > 0:22:59which just leaves the final bedroom, the master.
0:22:59 > 0:23:02So, this is five of five.
0:23:02 > 0:23:04This is yours.
0:23:04 > 0:23:06- Oh, lovely.- That's very nice.
0:23:06 > 0:23:08Yeah, very nice. Absolutely ideal for us.
0:23:08 > 0:23:12And this is the master because it's the only one with en suite, in which
0:23:12 > 0:23:14- you've got a roll-top bath. - Mm-hm.- And I'm a bath man.
0:23:14 > 0:23:16So that suits me just fine.
0:23:16 > 0:23:19I'm thinking - get rid of the cupboard
0:23:19 > 0:23:22and maybe make next door into a dressing room.
0:23:22 > 0:23:24- Ah, the smaller box... - Yeah.- And go through to that?
0:23:24 > 0:23:27- Yeah.- They're only stud walls up here.- Yeah, that's what I thought.
0:23:27 > 0:23:29- Bearing in mind this is the newer extension.- Yeah.- Yeah.
0:23:29 > 0:23:31So it could all be done in time.
0:23:31 > 0:23:33So you have a bit more room, cos it is a little bit...
0:23:33 > 0:23:35Maybe play guess the price first...
0:23:35 > 0:23:37THEY LAUGH
0:23:37 > 0:23:39Yeah, let's see what it's going to cost you
0:23:39 > 0:23:41before we start redesigning it.
0:23:41 > 0:23:44I'll take it as a good sign that Pauline already has designs
0:23:44 > 0:23:45on this one.
0:23:45 > 0:23:50And outside, we really get a sense of the geography of this property,
0:23:50 > 0:23:53with the U-shaped layout cradling a rear courtyard...
0:23:54 > 0:23:57..which opens onto further landscaped gardens.
0:23:57 > 0:23:59Feels a bit sort of Mediterranean, dare I say it.
0:23:59 > 0:24:01- Yeah.- I think it does, yeah. - A bit of a sun trap.
0:24:01 > 0:24:03And you've got a bit of green space there for the dogs.
0:24:03 > 0:24:06- Yeah.- Mm-hm.- You've got a dedicated barbecue area up there.
0:24:06 > 0:24:07- Yeah.- And then more bits of seating,
0:24:07 > 0:24:09as you can see, summer house up there, and so on.
0:24:09 > 0:24:12- Yeah, it's really quite something. It really is.- So,
0:24:12 > 0:24:16let's have a think about how much this rather inviting house might be,
0:24:16 > 0:24:18- Robin.- I think you've gone over budget on this one.
0:24:18 > 0:24:23- OK.- I think 749.
0:24:23 > 0:24:27- OK.- I hope.- Way over budget.
0:24:27 > 0:24:28- But, you know...- Yeah!
0:24:28 > 0:24:30..doable, I'm sure. OK, 749.
0:24:30 > 0:24:31Mm-hm.
0:24:31 > 0:24:37I am going to go for a more hopeful 650.
0:24:37 > 0:24:40650. You are both wildly wrong, I'm afraid.
0:24:40 > 0:24:42- Lovely.- Because this could be yours for...
0:24:43 > 0:24:46..£565,000.
0:24:46 > 0:24:49Right, well, let's shake on that one, then, Jules.
0:24:49 > 0:24:50Can I have a seat?
0:24:50 > 0:24:52You may indeed.
0:24:52 > 0:24:56- Oh, my word.- Shocking. - Comfortably under budget.
0:24:56 > 0:24:58- Mm.- I think you've found a real gem here.
0:24:58 > 0:24:59- Robin.- Darling.
0:24:59 > 0:25:01THEY LAUGH
0:25:01 > 0:25:04Well, I'm going to give you plenty of time to look around here,
0:25:04 > 0:25:06and I will find you somewhere in this sprawling complex
0:25:06 > 0:25:10- a little bit later on. - Lovely, yeah.- Thanks very much. - Thank you so much. Really like it.
0:25:10 > 0:25:13- It's all right.- Thanks, Jules. Brilliant find.- Absolute pleasure.
0:25:13 > 0:25:14- Go on, off you go.- Thanks. - Take your time.
0:25:14 > 0:25:17We shall give you as much time as you need because,
0:25:17 > 0:25:18well, let's be honest,
0:25:18 > 0:25:20you can't really rush a good thing.
0:25:22 > 0:25:26Sitting well below their maximum budget of £700,000,
0:25:26 > 0:25:28this extended 18th-century brick-built home
0:25:28 > 0:25:30has a beautifully fitted
0:25:30 > 0:25:34open-plan kitchen/breakfast room as well as a large reception room and
0:25:34 > 0:25:36dedicated dining area.
0:25:36 > 0:25:39There are five bedrooms including the master en suite, and the house
0:25:39 > 0:25:42centres on a very private rear courtyard.
0:25:42 > 0:25:45Plus, it's in the heart of a pretty Yorkshire village.
0:25:47 > 0:25:50Mm. Nice little study-cum-snug.
0:25:50 > 0:25:52It's lovely, isn't it? Lovely.
0:25:52 > 0:25:54I love the fireplace and the beam across the top.
0:25:54 > 0:25:56Oh, yeah. Well, I have to say,
0:25:56 > 0:25:59as soon as I walked into the house, I just thought,
0:25:59 > 0:26:01"Mm, this is a contender."
0:26:01 > 0:26:03It's lovely and warm, it's got a welcoming feeling.
0:26:03 > 0:26:07And then when I turned the corner into the kitchen, it was just like,
0:26:07 > 0:26:10"Hello, this feels like it could be home."
0:26:10 > 0:26:12I thought the kitchen had a wow factor to me.
0:26:12 > 0:26:14I like the way it ran off to a dining area
0:26:14 > 0:26:15and a bit of a snuggy thing
0:26:15 > 0:26:18that I can just see us - TV there, and dinner on your knees,
0:26:18 > 0:26:21which everybody loves. Brilliant house.
0:26:21 > 0:26:22I can't really fault it.
0:26:25 > 0:26:27- After you, madam.- Thank you.
0:26:27 > 0:26:29- There we go, Robin. - Thank you, Jules.
0:26:29 > 0:26:33Well, without wishing to be too technical, I would say that was a...
0:26:33 > 0:26:35..fairly successful house tour.
0:26:35 > 0:26:39- I think you're right.- And I think a pretty successful day so far,
0:26:39 > 0:26:43which probably means we've all deserved a pint of something local.
0:26:43 > 0:26:45How about that?
0:26:45 > 0:26:46- Absolutely.- Come on.
0:27:04 > 0:27:07We're in North Yorkshire helping Robin and Pauline
0:27:07 > 0:27:10move from Majorca back to the region of their birth.
0:27:10 > 0:27:12We've already viewed some great property for their budget
0:27:12 > 0:27:14of £700,000,
0:27:14 > 0:27:17but there's more to see, including the Mystery House,
0:27:17 > 0:27:20which proves that first appearances don't always count.
0:27:21 > 0:27:22I didn't expect this.
0:27:23 > 0:27:25I really didn't.
0:27:25 > 0:27:28Plus, I earn my wings in a World War I fighter plane.
0:27:28 > 0:27:31- Clear prop.- Prop clear.
0:27:36 > 0:27:37Well, we have, to be honest,
0:27:37 > 0:27:40not a bad start to our final day of house-hunting
0:27:40 > 0:27:41here in North Yorkshire,
0:27:41 > 0:27:44which means, of course, we have just one more property to come.
0:27:44 > 0:27:47Now, having got to know Robin and Pauline just a little bit better,
0:27:47 > 0:27:50I'm pretty optimistic at this stage that our Mystery House could embody
0:27:50 > 0:27:52everything they've been hoping to find.
0:27:52 > 0:27:54But let's face it, it has got
0:27:54 > 0:27:56some competition from what we saw yesterday.
0:27:56 > 0:27:59So, will it better it? Well, we'll just have to wait and see.
0:28:06 > 0:28:09Our mystery property is in the tiny hamlet of Heyshaw.
0:28:11 > 0:28:15Located in the Nidderdale Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty
0:28:15 > 0:28:18where the River Nidd has been dammed to create a reservoir,
0:28:18 > 0:28:20the area includes the town of Pateley Bridge,
0:28:20 > 0:28:23which has a wide selection of places to pick up provisions.
0:28:25 > 0:28:27But three miles away,
0:28:27 > 0:28:30in the stunning surroundings of the Nidderdale countryside,
0:28:30 > 0:28:32it's time to unmask our Mystery House.
0:28:33 > 0:28:36Well, guys, at long last, I can reveal our Mystery House,
0:28:36 > 0:28:41and I'm thinking this is probably more what you had in mind.
0:28:41 > 0:28:42Absolutely. Definitely.
0:28:42 > 0:28:46100%. Absolutely beautiful by the looks outside.
0:28:46 > 0:28:49- What's Robin thinking? - Yeah, absolute wow.- Yeah.
0:28:49 > 0:28:53I mean, it's a quintessential slice of Dales architecture, isn't it,
0:28:53 > 0:28:55- really?- Yeah, it is.- It really is.
0:28:55 > 0:28:58From here, you can see, it's a building that's sort of evolved
0:28:58 > 0:29:00over time but has been beautifully done.
0:29:00 > 0:29:01I just love the setting.
0:29:01 > 0:29:06Rolling hills, the stone walls, plus, also, a herd of ten alpacas,
0:29:06 > 0:29:08which they've got on it. You can just see one.
0:29:08 > 0:29:10Yeah, I thought, "That's a strange sheep."
0:29:10 > 0:29:13- Yeah, you see them now. - And they could come with it.
0:29:13 > 0:29:15- Good!- I'd be up for it.
0:29:15 > 0:29:18I know you wanted to buy a house, but you might just get yourself
0:29:18 > 0:29:20a bit of farming in the process.
0:29:20 > 0:29:22Well, if the inside reflects the outside...
0:29:22 > 0:29:23Yeah.
0:29:23 > 0:29:26- That's a property.- Let's get in and have a look, shall we?
0:29:26 > 0:29:27- Mm.- Please.
0:29:28 > 0:29:31Originally a barn, in 2009,
0:29:31 > 0:29:35this stone building was converted into a unique home.
0:29:35 > 0:29:40Now, Robin and Pauline SAY they want to downsize, but they may have a
0:29:40 > 0:29:43change of heart when they step inside our Mystery House.
0:29:43 > 0:29:47- Ooh. Ooh.- I'm not going to say anything.- Ooh.- You tell me.
0:29:49 > 0:29:50I didn't expect this.
0:29:50 > 0:29:53I would never expect marble floors on the floor of an old barn
0:29:53 > 0:29:55up in this part of the world, that's for sure.
0:29:55 > 0:30:00Yeah. Travertine all over the place in this particular conversion.
0:30:00 > 0:30:02I mean, it's a barn conversion,
0:30:02 > 0:30:04but when you walk into this very grand sort
0:30:04 > 0:30:06- of dining hall, I suppose...- Yeah.
0:30:06 > 0:30:09..you could be forgiven for thinking you were inside something more
0:30:09 > 0:30:11- Georgian.- Wow, very grand.
0:30:11 > 0:30:14Speechless. I can't wait to have a look at the rest of it.
0:30:14 > 0:30:18- Yeah?- Yeah.- Well, that way, down the steps, is the main living room.
0:30:18 > 0:30:21- Yes.- Mm-hm.- But we'll save that and we'll go to the kitchen/diner,
0:30:21 > 0:30:23which is this way.
0:30:24 > 0:30:26A small corridor from this room
0:30:26 > 0:30:28passes a utility and ground-floor cloak
0:30:28 > 0:30:29and shower room and takes us
0:30:29 > 0:30:33to a bright and spacious kitchen/breakfast room.
0:30:34 > 0:30:38- Ooh.- Yeah.- Very smart.
0:30:38 > 0:30:40- Very nice.- Yeah. That's beautiful.
0:30:40 > 0:30:43And the aspects are - window, window, window, you know.
0:30:43 > 0:30:44Wow, fantastic views.
0:30:44 > 0:30:46Yes, so you can keep an eye on your alpacas.
0:30:46 > 0:30:49- There they are.- As they come nibbling at the window. Yeah.
0:30:49 > 0:30:52- Gosh, the views are amazing, aren't they?- Yeah, I think this is...
0:30:52 > 0:30:55- I'm very impressed by this. - Yeah.- Happy so far?
0:30:55 > 0:30:56- Very.- Very, very.
0:30:56 > 0:30:59- Come and have look through here.- Mm.
0:30:59 > 0:31:02Pauline and Robin have made it clear they like large spaces,
0:31:02 > 0:31:05and retracing our steps to the opposite end
0:31:05 > 0:31:07of the ground floor, we find
0:31:07 > 0:31:09the very generously proportioned living room.
0:31:13 > 0:31:14Mm.
0:31:14 > 0:31:16That really is something. A lovely size.
0:31:16 > 0:31:19I told you roughly exactly what I wanted and you've found me roughly
0:31:19 > 0:31:20exactly what I want.
0:31:22 > 0:31:23It's just fantastic.
0:31:23 > 0:31:27The fire, the way they use the stone, the wooden floors,
0:31:27 > 0:31:28the subtle lighting.
0:31:28 > 0:31:31I just can't stop thinking I'll have to play guess the price shortly.
0:31:31 > 0:31:34- I know.- You will.- We don't want to know that bit.
0:31:34 > 0:31:36You will, yeah. Let's go upstairs.
0:31:36 > 0:31:39There are four bedrooms to explore,
0:31:39 > 0:31:43which hopefully will please you as much as down here.
0:31:44 > 0:31:49What a fantastic response to our Mystery House so far.
0:31:49 > 0:31:52Stairs from the dining hall take us up to the sleeping quarters.
0:31:52 > 0:31:55And here, there are three guest bedrooms, all doubles,
0:31:55 > 0:31:58and each with an aspect to the front of the property.
0:31:58 > 0:32:02And they're all served by a fully tiled bathroom featuring a separate
0:32:02 > 0:32:04shower. Finally,
0:32:04 > 0:32:07bedroom number four is a large double with a vaulted ceiling
0:32:07 > 0:32:10that could be the one for Robin and Pauline.
0:32:11 > 0:32:14So, this is the master.
0:32:14 > 0:32:17- Ooh.- Also, you have got a walk-in wardrobe.
0:32:17 > 0:32:20- Oh, wow, lovely. - Yes.- Oh, I like that.
0:32:20 > 0:32:21And through that door -
0:32:21 > 0:32:24en-suite shower room, to the same spec as you've got down...
0:32:24 > 0:32:26- Oh, lovely.- Very nice.
0:32:26 > 0:32:28- Lovely.- It's really nice.
0:32:28 > 0:32:30- Mm.- Happy?- Very.
0:32:30 > 0:32:32- Really nice.- OK.
0:32:32 > 0:32:35Is it raining? Let's take our chances.
0:32:35 > 0:32:38Come on, let's have a quick look outside.
0:32:39 > 0:32:42So, lots to appeal to our couple on the inside,
0:32:42 > 0:32:45and this impeccably finished barn conversion is situated
0:32:45 > 0:32:49in almost three acres, where there's patio seating,
0:32:49 > 0:32:51a double garage, and paddocks.
0:32:53 > 0:32:58Look at the audience that have come to greet our final part of the tour.
0:32:58 > 0:33:04Hello, boys and girls. So, now we're going to test you on its...
0:33:04 > 0:33:05..its market value.
0:33:05 > 0:33:07- Who's going to go first, then? - Nitty-gritty time.
0:33:07 > 0:33:09You're looking at me, so I better.
0:33:09 > 0:33:11Yeah, go on, then, Robin, off you go.
0:33:11 > 0:33:13OK. I am hoping... I think you've put me way over here.
0:33:13 > 0:33:15- Yeah.- But I say...
0:33:17 > 0:33:21- ..735.- 735, yeah.- A hopeful 700.
0:33:21 > 0:33:24A hopeful £700,000.
0:33:24 > 0:33:29Well, your optimism, madam, has been rewarded
0:33:29 > 0:33:31cos this is £700,000.
0:33:34 > 0:33:36That's a good price for this specification, and here.
0:33:36 > 0:33:39- Wow.- With, let's face it, the best part of three acres.
0:33:39 > 0:33:42To be fair, I think the alpacas are by separate negotiation.
0:33:42 > 0:33:44- Mm-hm.- But it's all doable.
0:33:44 > 0:33:46- Whoa.- We'll be talking a lot tonight, that's for sure.
0:33:46 > 0:33:48- Yes.- I'll bet you will.
0:33:48 > 0:33:50Well, I suggest you start that conversation right now.
0:33:50 > 0:33:51Off you go. Go and enjoy it.
0:33:51 > 0:33:53- Yes, definitely. - I will catch up with you...
0:33:53 > 0:33:56- We'll go down there, I think.- ..a little bit later. Wherever you like.
0:33:56 > 0:33:58Shall we have a look down there? Come on, let's go down.
0:33:58 > 0:34:01- Thank you very much and well found. - Thank you!- That is our pleasure.
0:34:01 > 0:34:03- Woo!- Well, there we go.
0:34:03 > 0:34:05You know that old thing about being in the right place
0:34:05 > 0:34:09at the right time? This is one of those moments.
0:34:09 > 0:34:12Hitting everything, including the budget,
0:34:12 > 0:34:16our surprising Mystery House offers a large kitchen/diner and three
0:34:16 > 0:34:18further reception rooms.
0:34:18 > 0:34:21There are four bedrooms, including a master en suite.
0:34:21 > 0:34:24Plus, it comes with almost three acres of land,
0:34:24 > 0:34:26all in a stunning location within
0:34:26 > 0:34:30the Nidderdale Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty.
0:34:30 > 0:34:32I'm really struck by this house.
0:34:32 > 0:34:34I think it's a wonderful place.
0:34:34 > 0:34:39I honestly think that this could be our homecoming,
0:34:39 > 0:34:43cos we've found a house here that is really what we're after.
0:34:43 > 0:34:44I feel very lucky.
0:34:45 > 0:34:47I have to jump in a bit on this one.
0:34:47 > 0:34:51- Yeah, I could see this being our new home.- Mm.
0:34:51 > 0:34:54- Hello, Pauline.- Hello. - How are we doing?
0:34:54 > 0:34:56- Lovely. Very nice.- You don't want to leave, do you, really?
0:34:56 > 0:34:58- Not really, no.- I don't blame you.
0:34:58 > 0:34:59It's absolutely gorgeous.
0:34:59 > 0:35:03And, look, a splash of sunshine to top it all off.
0:35:03 > 0:35:05- Mm.- Good signal.- So,
0:35:05 > 0:35:06we have bombarded you
0:35:06 > 0:35:08with information and properties this week.
0:35:08 > 0:35:12You now need to go and make some sort of sense of it.
0:35:12 > 0:35:14Perhaps over a pint?
0:35:14 > 0:35:16- Yes, please.- Come on, then. - I'll have a half.- Oh, yeah.
0:35:26 > 0:35:28Yorkshire has many attributes,
0:35:28 > 0:35:32but a lesser-known one is its place in aviation history,
0:35:32 > 0:35:36and here on the outskirts of York is the Yorkshire Air Museum.
0:35:36 > 0:35:39I've come to meet museum director Ian Reed
0:35:39 > 0:35:42to discover more about this fascinating homage to aviation.
0:35:42 > 0:35:45Well, Ian, this is my idea of heaven,
0:35:45 > 0:35:49getting to walk under the wings of a heavy bomber, and surrounded by this
0:35:49 > 0:35:51fabulous collection of aircraft.
0:35:51 > 0:35:54- What a place.- Thank you. - I mean, many people, I think,
0:35:54 > 0:35:58have always assumed that aviation begins with the Wright brothers
0:35:58 > 0:36:00at the start of the 20th century.
0:36:00 > 0:36:02But Yorkshire has its own story to tell.
0:36:02 > 0:36:04Well, yes, I mean, the Wright brothers were the first
0:36:04 > 0:36:08powered flight, but they weren't the first aeroplane, by a long way.
0:36:10 > 0:36:1350 years earlier, over there, is the Cayley glider.
0:36:13 > 0:36:16Sir George Cayley, a very well-known Yorkshireman,
0:36:16 > 0:36:20renowned throughout the world as being the inventor
0:36:20 > 0:36:22of the modern-day aeroplane.
0:36:23 > 0:36:25In 1853, Cayley's glider,
0:36:25 > 0:36:29the world's first manned aircraft, dubbed the governable parachute,
0:36:29 > 0:36:33took to the air. It's rather nice that you've got
0:36:33 > 0:36:34Cayley's version over there
0:36:34 > 0:36:37and you've acknowledged that transition through
0:36:37 > 0:36:39to the Wright Flyer above us.
0:36:39 > 0:36:41I mean, it is quite a contraption, isn't it?
0:36:41 > 0:36:44Yeah. I mean, a lot of the things on the Wright Flyer actually came
0:36:44 > 0:36:47directly from Cayley's notes.
0:36:47 > 0:36:51And at Kill Devil, in 1903, when the Wright brothers first did
0:36:51 > 0:36:54their first 120ft hop,
0:36:54 > 0:36:57afterwards, when they met the press, they actually acknowledged that,
0:36:57 > 0:36:59you know, the inspiration had come
0:36:59 > 0:37:02from the work of Sir George Cayley,
0:37:02 > 0:37:05- the Yorkshireman.- What I've always been staggered by with the story of
0:37:05 > 0:37:09aviation is the way that it evolved so much within just a century.
0:37:09 > 0:37:11I mean, there's the Wright Flyer, what, 1903.
0:37:11 > 0:37:13We've got Cayley over there, 1853,
0:37:13 > 0:37:18and yet we're stood next to this beautiful Halifax bomber,
0:37:18 > 0:37:19the only one of its kind in the world, I gather.
0:37:19 > 0:37:22Yeah, it's the only bomber version, so it's a fantastic beast.
0:37:22 > 0:37:25I mean, when you look at the Wright Flyer above it,
0:37:25 > 0:37:27there's only 30-odd years between these two aircraft.
0:37:27 > 0:37:29One did 120 feet.
0:37:29 > 0:37:33This one flew all the way to Berlin and back at 280mph,
0:37:33 > 0:37:35with eight tonnes of bombs and seven crew.
0:37:38 > 0:37:42It took a world war to escalate the technological developments of these
0:37:42 > 0:37:43fantastic flying machines,
0:37:43 > 0:37:47and the advances are really quite remarkable.
0:37:47 > 0:37:49Graham Sharp is an aircraft engineer,
0:37:49 > 0:37:51and for six years, he's been working on
0:37:51 > 0:37:56this SE5A, built around 1917.
0:37:56 > 0:37:58Its restoration is almost complete.
0:37:59 > 0:38:02To get my hands on a genuine SE5.
0:38:06 > 0:38:08- How's that? - That's fine, is that, yeah.
0:38:08 > 0:38:09We can pop some chocks in now.
0:38:11 > 0:38:12Yeah. I love that.
0:38:12 > 0:38:14Look at that. The Lewis gun on the top.
0:38:14 > 0:38:15Why do I know that?
0:38:15 > 0:38:18I'm just an anorak, really, for aircraft, I suppose.
0:38:19 > 0:38:22The SE5A is a single-seat biplane
0:38:22 > 0:38:24and was one of the outstanding fighters
0:38:24 > 0:38:26of the First World War.
0:38:26 > 0:38:28It was also one of the fastest,
0:38:28 > 0:38:31capable of racing through the sky at 138mph.
0:38:31 > 0:38:34Can I have a quick peek in the cockpit?
0:38:34 > 0:38:37- Help yourself. Have a look.- Great.
0:38:37 > 0:38:38So this is your world.
0:38:38 > 0:38:41At how many feet do you normally fly?
0:38:41 > 0:38:43Well, probably about 400 or 500 feet.
0:38:43 > 0:38:46- Not very high these days. - And the wicker seat, I love that.
0:38:46 > 0:38:49- The wicker seat, yes. - And the pedals. Very, very simple.
0:38:49 > 0:38:51Yeah. No parachute.
0:38:51 > 0:38:53I mean, it is on a wing and a prayer, it seems.
0:38:53 > 0:38:55THEY LAUGH
0:38:55 > 0:38:58I mean, when you're up there, flying around,
0:38:58 > 0:39:00do you get a sense of what those young men,
0:39:00 > 0:39:04those pioneers of military aviation, were going through?
0:39:04 > 0:39:06You do get a sense of it, yes.
0:39:06 > 0:39:08Open cockpit, wind in your face, you do.
0:39:08 > 0:39:11Apart from being shot at. They were incredibly brave people to do it,
0:39:11 > 0:39:14but they were young, that was the thing - no fear.
0:39:14 > 0:39:17Graham's been lucky enough to work here with these beautiful aircraft
0:39:17 > 0:39:21for ten years, but today he's going to let me sit in the cockpit.
0:39:21 > 0:39:23Do you know, there's actually a little more room in here than I was
0:39:23 > 0:39:26- expecting, Graham, to be honest. - It's quite roomy.
0:39:27 > 0:39:29Clear prop.
0:39:29 > 0:39:30Prop clear.
0:39:37 > 0:39:38Throttle up.
0:39:41 > 0:39:42Wow.
0:39:42 > 0:39:46That's fabulous. This certainly gives you a real sense
0:39:46 > 0:39:49of what those early pilots were up against,
0:39:49 > 0:39:54flying these very simple machines at great height,
0:39:54 > 0:39:56and with great daring!
0:39:56 > 0:40:00The sight, sound and smell of a centuries-old engine
0:40:00 > 0:40:02firing into life.
0:40:02 > 0:40:04This really is an absolute treat.
0:40:04 > 0:40:06And to think, thanks to Cayley,
0:40:06 > 0:40:09it all started here in Yorkshire.
0:40:11 > 0:40:13And with another tick on my bucket list,
0:40:13 > 0:40:15it's time to get back to our house-hunters.
0:40:17 > 0:40:20Well, we've given Robin and Pauline some really good options this week,
0:40:20 > 0:40:23and there are clearly two favourite contenders,
0:40:23 > 0:40:27but which one might persuade them to give up the fun and sun of the
0:40:27 > 0:40:30Mediterranean and move back to their beloved Yorkshire?
0:40:30 > 0:40:32Well, let's go and ask them.
0:40:38 > 0:40:39Well, guys, here we are.
0:40:39 > 0:40:43It's our final conversation of the week, when we try and make sense of
0:40:43 > 0:40:46everything that we have had a chance to show you.
0:40:46 > 0:40:50But I think it's fair to say that there are two clear contenders.
0:40:50 > 0:40:52Yeah, definitely two.
0:40:52 > 0:40:56- Yeah.- The courtyard house, I totally fell in love with.
0:40:56 > 0:40:57But then, of course,
0:40:57 > 0:41:00up your sleeve comes the Mystery,
0:41:00 > 0:41:02and that threw a spanner in the works,
0:41:02 > 0:41:04- didn't it?- That blew my socks off.
0:41:04 > 0:41:08- Yeah.- Because that is quintessential, you know, Yorkshire,
0:41:08 > 0:41:11out on the wilds there, on the tops,
0:41:11 > 0:41:12just brilliant place, brilliant place.
0:41:12 > 0:41:17It was a classic slice of Yorkshire Dales real estate.
0:41:17 > 0:41:21And, you know, beautifully located but also beautifully renovated.
0:41:21 > 0:41:23- Really.- Yeah.- It was second to none.
0:41:23 > 0:41:27Yeah. The location, seeing the rambling hill,
0:41:27 > 0:41:29the sheep, the llamas,
0:41:29 > 0:41:30the lovely walls.
0:41:30 > 0:41:33Even if it was raining, it seemed to win.
0:41:33 > 0:41:36- It was...- It was.- ..fantastic, that house, I must admit.- Yeah.
0:41:36 > 0:41:39So, the Mystery House is your favourite?
0:41:39 > 0:41:41Yep. I would definitely say that.
0:41:41 > 0:41:43- The Mystery House just tipped it. - Yeah.
0:41:43 > 0:41:46It was all of your budget at £700,000.
0:41:46 > 0:41:47What happens next?
0:41:47 > 0:41:50So think about maybe putting in an offer?
0:41:50 > 0:41:52I could actually see it going this far.
0:41:52 > 0:41:53- Interesting.- I knew you'd get close,
0:41:53 > 0:41:56but I didn't think you'd hit the nail on the head.
0:41:56 > 0:41:59Well, you have got, you know, a lot to think about.
0:41:59 > 0:42:02I wish you all the very best of luck with your deliberations.
0:42:02 > 0:42:03Let's drink to those.
0:42:03 > 0:42:05- Thank you very much. - And let us know how you get on.
0:42:05 > 0:42:08- Here's to our homecoming.- There you go.- Cheers.- To a homecoming.
0:42:08 > 0:42:11- Cheers, darling.- Cheers. - Cheers, Jules.- Cheers, Robin.
0:42:11 > 0:42:12Thanks.
0:42:16 > 0:42:18You know, in my experience,
0:42:18 > 0:42:20there are few counties that elicit the same
0:42:20 > 0:42:23sense of pride and belonging as does Yorkshire amongst those who count
0:42:23 > 0:42:26themselves lucky enough to have been born and bred here.
0:42:26 > 0:42:30And that certainly has been obvious this week as we've helped Robin and
0:42:30 > 0:42:35Pauline exchange their home away from home on the sun-kissed island
0:42:35 > 0:42:39of Majorca for a home back home here, in Yorkshire.
0:42:39 > 0:42:43Now, clearly they still have plenty of talking to do before that becomes
0:42:43 > 0:42:46a reality, not least a discussion as to whether or not they really
0:42:46 > 0:42:49want to share their new home with a herd of alpacas.
0:42:49 > 0:42:50Well, there are worse things.
0:42:50 > 0:42:52I'll see you next time.
0:42:54 > 0:42:57If you would like to escape to the country in England, Scotland,
0:42:57 > 0:43:00Wales or Northern Ireland and need our help,
0:43:00 > 0:43:03why not apply online at...?
