0:00:02 > 0:00:03350 million years ago,
0:00:03 > 0:00:08this tranquil headland was the site of erupting volcanoes.
0:00:08 > 0:00:11Fast-forward to the 20th century,
0:00:11 > 0:00:15and the sound of explosions once again echoed along the coastline.
0:00:15 > 0:00:17So, where am I?
0:00:17 > 0:00:19What happened here?
0:00:19 > 0:00:20Find out in just a moment.
0:00:38 > 0:00:43Today's house hunt takes us on a journey of excitement and surprises.
0:00:43 > 0:00:45I think if it had a title it'd be, "ta-da!"
0:00:45 > 0:00:48- because you don't expect it.- No.
0:00:48 > 0:00:50There's plenty of emotion...
0:00:51 > 0:00:55- Wow, it's beautiful.- Oh! Gosh.
0:00:55 > 0:00:57..and very good reasons to celebrate.
0:00:59 > 0:01:00New life.
0:01:04 > 0:01:08Today I'm in Somerset and this is Sand Point,
0:01:08 > 0:01:11a peninsula looking out over the Bristol Channel,
0:01:11 > 0:01:13in the north of the county.
0:01:13 > 0:01:15Now, as part of coastal defences
0:01:15 > 0:01:17during the Second World War,
0:01:17 > 0:01:21experimental weapons were tested right along this stretch of shore,
0:01:21 > 0:01:25but today the coast itself is a protected site,
0:01:25 > 0:01:30whose Carboniferous limestone rocks reveal hundreds of millions of years
0:01:30 > 0:01:34of history, and ancient life forms preserved as fossils.
0:01:34 > 0:01:38So, now, this largely unsung Jurassic coast
0:01:38 > 0:01:42is a peaceful place to soak up some incredible views,
0:01:42 > 0:01:45and it's just one of the many beautiful places
0:01:45 > 0:01:47this county has to offer.
0:01:50 > 0:01:54The county of Somerset sits in England's South-west peninsula,
0:01:54 > 0:01:57banded to its north by a 45-mile stretch of coastline
0:01:57 > 0:02:01that flows from the Severn estuary, and out into the Bristol Channel.
0:02:03 > 0:02:08Along its shore you find Victorian seaside towns such as Clevedon,
0:02:08 > 0:02:11whose Grade-I-listed wrought and cast-iron pier
0:02:11 > 0:02:15reaches more than 300 metres over the Severn estuary.
0:02:15 > 0:02:18Somerset's aquatic themes continue inland.
0:02:18 > 0:02:20Blagdon Lake in the Chew Valley was man-made
0:02:20 > 0:02:24at the turn of the 20th century by damming the River Yeo.
0:02:24 > 0:02:27As well as providing a primary source of water,
0:02:27 > 0:02:30it's also a Site of Special Scientific Interest
0:02:30 > 0:02:33that attracts a vast range of wildlife.
0:02:34 > 0:02:37The geology underpinning parts of the county
0:02:37 > 0:02:40has influenced much of its attractive architecture,
0:02:40 > 0:02:43most notably the Georgian buildings found in Bath.
0:02:43 > 0:02:46And in Frome, one well-preserved medieval street
0:02:46 > 0:02:51features a leat running through it, which is an ancient stream.
0:02:51 > 0:02:55Whether coast or inland, history or mythology,
0:02:55 > 0:02:58including ancient sites like Glastonbury Tor,
0:02:58 > 0:03:02it's clear to see how Somerset's captivating heritage
0:03:02 > 0:03:04continually draws new residents.
0:03:08 > 0:03:10When it comes to property in the region,
0:03:10 > 0:03:14the average price of detached homes here in Somerset
0:03:14 > 0:03:17is pretty much on a par with the rest of the UK.
0:03:17 > 0:03:20However, the closer you get to Bristol,
0:03:20 > 0:03:24be prepared to dig deeper into those pockets.
0:03:24 > 0:03:26For example, in North Somerset,
0:03:26 > 0:03:31you'll need to fork out around £50,000 more for a similar property,
0:03:31 > 0:03:35whilst Bath and North East Somerset command prices
0:03:35 > 0:03:39some £200,000 more than the national figure.
0:03:39 > 0:03:43So, the more rural you go away from the cities,
0:03:43 > 0:03:46the more value you'll get for your money.
0:03:46 > 0:03:48Let's meet today's couple,
0:03:48 > 0:03:52who are after a country escape for their growing family.
0:03:53 > 0:03:58Stay-at-home mum Rachel and her husband Kai who works in recruitment
0:03:58 > 0:04:01currently live in the Surrey commuter town of Guilford.
0:04:01 > 0:04:03Me and Kai met in 2007.
0:04:03 > 0:04:06We had a long-distance relationship for about a year,
0:04:06 > 0:04:12and we got married in 2012 and we've got two gorgeous children now.
0:04:14 > 0:04:16And it's since the arrival of two-year-old Emmy,
0:04:16 > 0:04:18along with Zach, who's three,
0:04:18 > 0:04:20that the time to move has an added urgency.
0:04:22 > 0:04:26Zach is due to go to school this year, so I think
0:04:26 > 0:04:28if we didn't commit now to moving,
0:04:28 > 0:04:33then we would actually have to commit to Guilford for longer.
0:04:33 > 0:04:38And Rachel knows first-hand just how beneficial a rural childhood can be.
0:04:38 > 0:04:41I was brought up in Lancashire in the countryside.
0:04:41 > 0:04:43When I was a young child, you know,
0:04:43 > 0:04:46we'd be grass-sledging in the fields with my cousins.
0:04:46 > 0:04:49We would spend every day outdoors,
0:04:49 > 0:04:53and I just think that's really important to take, now, forward
0:04:53 > 0:04:56for my children. I just want them to experience what I did.
0:04:56 > 0:04:59Kai currently works in London,
0:04:59 > 0:05:01but the hefty commute and demanding hours
0:05:01 > 0:05:04are taking their toll on his family life.
0:05:04 > 0:05:08The move for me will allow me to set my own business up and be
0:05:08 > 0:05:09far more flexible with my time.
0:05:09 > 0:05:12It's going to change my lifestyle dramatically.
0:05:12 > 0:05:16I'll be so much more involved in the kids' day-to-day.
0:05:16 > 0:05:19I might even get a lie in every now and then,
0:05:19 > 0:05:22- which is a difference, but...- Maybe.
0:05:22 > 0:05:25Family is the big push behind this move.
0:05:25 > 0:05:26Kai grew up in Wiltshire,
0:05:26 > 0:05:29and Rachel's parents now live in the West Country,
0:05:29 > 0:05:31so they're keen to make tracks to Somerset,
0:05:31 > 0:05:34which will bring them nearer to their loved ones.
0:05:34 > 0:05:36I think every time we travel to the Southwest
0:05:36 > 0:05:40to see your parents or my parents, we instinctively think,
0:05:40 > 0:05:42"This is where we need to be."
0:05:42 > 0:05:44Just being part of the children's lives,
0:05:44 > 0:05:46just the grandparents and their cousins,
0:05:46 > 0:05:51and their aunties and uncles being there with them more often
0:05:51 > 0:05:52is just priceless.
0:05:52 > 0:05:55In between that all-important family time,
0:05:55 > 0:05:57Kai is also hoping for the opportunity
0:05:57 > 0:06:01to indulge certain passions that have fallen by the wayside.
0:06:01 > 0:06:03I used to be the sportiest guy in the world,
0:06:03 > 0:06:06and now I just haven't done anything in about four or five years.
0:06:06 > 0:06:10Recently I've really started to enjoy getting out on my bike,
0:06:10 > 0:06:12so to have an opportunity to do that,
0:06:12 > 0:06:16surrounded by amazing scenery, would be absolutely incredible.
0:06:16 > 0:06:19All in all, they are both full of optimism
0:06:19 > 0:06:22about their decision to create a more balanced,
0:06:22 > 0:06:23family-focused lifestyle.
0:06:23 > 0:06:25Definitely got concerns about the move,
0:06:25 > 0:06:29but I just think the good is definitely going to outweigh that.
0:06:29 > 0:06:32I don't have any concerns. Really looking forward to it.
0:06:37 > 0:06:41Primarily we'll be basing our search in the north of the county,
0:06:41 > 0:06:43concentrating on tranquil pockets
0:06:43 > 0:06:45that also offer easy access into Bristol or Bath
0:06:45 > 0:06:47for Kai's business needs.
0:06:49 > 0:06:51I'm meeting up with Rachel and Kai
0:06:51 > 0:06:53to discover more about the priorities
0:06:53 > 0:06:55for their upcoming country move.
0:06:58 > 0:07:00Well, Rachel and Kai, welcome to Somerset.
0:07:00 > 0:07:03So, what is it about this county that you want to move to?
0:07:05 > 0:07:06It's just a beautiful place.
0:07:06 > 0:07:08I mean, it's just stunning scenery,
0:07:08 > 0:07:10and it's close to our parents as well,
0:07:10 > 0:07:12which is quite important to us.
0:07:12 > 0:07:15Any particular part that you're looking for?
0:07:15 > 0:07:18I think from my point of view I would love to be
0:07:18 > 0:07:21within commuting distance of the city.
0:07:21 > 0:07:23As my business grows and develops,
0:07:23 > 0:07:25I would like the opportunity to maybe take it
0:07:25 > 0:07:26into a city and grow it further.
0:07:26 > 0:07:29So, your list of requirements with this new home,
0:07:29 > 0:07:31what exactly are you looking for?
0:07:31 > 0:07:35My ideal property would probably be something with character,
0:07:35 > 0:07:37with the opportunity to make it modern
0:07:37 > 0:07:39or if it's already modern inside.
0:07:39 > 0:07:41What's paramount is downstairs space.
0:07:41 > 0:07:45I just love entertaining space, just maybe a play room.
0:07:45 > 0:07:47How many bedrooms are you after?
0:07:47 > 0:07:49Ideally four, but I think we are open
0:07:49 > 0:07:51to the possibility of just having three.
0:07:51 > 0:07:55If I've got a spare room or study that I could use, that'd be fine,
0:07:55 > 0:07:56but ideally if there was an outhouse
0:07:56 > 0:07:58or something like that that I could convert.
0:07:58 > 0:08:01So, you don't mind a little bit of a project if it's on the cards?
0:08:01 > 0:08:03Yeah, we're quite excited about that, I think.
0:08:03 > 0:08:05Now, here's a cheeky little question for you.
0:08:05 > 0:08:08Who's going to make the final decision for this move?
0:08:08 > 0:08:10We're very much a team...
0:08:10 > 0:08:11- We're 50-50.- ..but me.
0:08:11 > 0:08:17But you! Remind us of your budget, please.
0:08:17 > 0:08:20Ideally our budget is £475,000.
0:08:20 > 0:08:22If we found the ideal property,
0:08:22 > 0:08:24I'm sure we can stretch a little bit further.
0:08:24 > 0:08:28We do have three magnificent homes lined up to show you.
0:08:28 > 0:08:30Oh, yes. Shall we get started?
0:08:30 > 0:08:33- Yes.- Love to.- Come on, then. - Thank you.
0:08:34 > 0:08:37With a maximum budget of £475,000,
0:08:37 > 0:08:39Rachel and Kai would like a home
0:08:39 > 0:08:42with a minimum of three bedrooms,
0:08:42 > 0:08:45plus office space and a large kitchen.
0:08:45 > 0:08:48They want a good-sized garden and, ideally,
0:08:48 > 0:08:50a central village location with
0:08:50 > 0:08:52well-respected primary schools to hand.
0:08:54 > 0:08:56We've lined up a trio of countryside homes
0:08:56 > 0:08:59that aim to give our couple and their young ones
0:08:59 > 0:09:01the new life they desire,
0:09:01 > 0:09:04but they won't know the price tag of each until the end of the tour.
0:09:04 > 0:09:07We'll finish our property hunt with the mystery house
0:09:07 > 0:09:10that might bring the dream even closer to home
0:09:10 > 0:09:11than they ever imagined.
0:09:15 > 0:09:18What's the first thing you think you're going to do
0:09:18 > 0:09:19once you've made the move?
0:09:19 > 0:09:22Just spending quality time together and enjoying each other's
0:09:22 > 0:09:26company more, and hopefully relying on the grandparents to babysit.
0:09:26 > 0:09:28Is that on the cards, do you think?
0:09:28 > 0:09:30A little, yeah.
0:09:30 > 0:09:33I think it would just be nice to just be able to go out
0:09:33 > 0:09:38once in a while. We don't have that back in Guilford.
0:09:38 > 0:09:40That important fourth bedroom.
0:09:40 > 0:09:44- Yes.- Absolutely. Hit the nail on the head.
0:09:49 > 0:09:51To kick-start our house search,
0:09:51 > 0:09:54we're heading to the village of Congresbury.
0:09:54 > 0:09:57Within a half-an-hour-drive of Bristol,
0:09:57 > 0:10:00it's in a prime location for Kai's future business plans.
0:10:01 > 0:10:05In the village itself are independent shops and a few pubs,
0:10:05 > 0:10:07plus a wide range of local sports activities
0:10:07 > 0:10:10that are sure to satisfy Kai and the children.
0:10:11 > 0:10:13The local church of St Andrews
0:10:13 > 0:10:15dates all the way back to the 15th century
0:10:15 > 0:10:18and shares its name with the village primary school,
0:10:18 > 0:10:23which our couple will be pleased to know has a good Ofsted rating.
0:10:23 > 0:10:25Congresbury was named after St Congar,
0:10:25 > 0:10:28who was said to have performed three miracles here.
0:10:28 > 0:10:31And our first property is just a short stroll
0:10:31 > 0:10:33from the centre of the village.
0:10:35 > 0:10:38Wow. Very nice.
0:10:38 > 0:10:39I hear some good sounds behind me.
0:10:39 > 0:10:41What do you think of our first home?
0:10:41 > 0:10:44- It's beautiful. - It's got a really nice feel.
0:10:44 > 0:10:45Beautiful windows there.
0:10:45 > 0:10:47It's got a great look.
0:10:47 > 0:10:49Very positive comments on the outside.
0:10:49 > 0:10:51Let's see what you think as we make our way inside.
0:10:51 > 0:10:52Thank you.
0:10:56 > 0:10:59This former barn was converted in the 1980s.
0:10:59 > 0:11:01The ground floor has a large living space
0:11:01 > 0:11:04with a separate dining room next door.
0:11:04 > 0:11:07We are heading straight into the heart of the home.
0:11:08 > 0:11:11So, I'm going to start off with our kitchen.
0:11:11 > 0:11:14It's nice. Nice space, you'd be able to fit
0:11:14 > 0:11:17quite a big table in here and entertain quite nicely.
0:11:17 > 0:11:19Yeah. It's lovely. Very traditional.
0:11:19 > 0:11:21There are probably some things I would like to change,
0:11:21 > 0:11:22but that's quite nice.
0:11:22 > 0:11:25I like to be able to put my own stamp on somewhere.
0:11:25 > 0:11:28Yeah. How do you like the idea of looking out the kitchen window
0:11:28 > 0:11:30- into the garden?- Gorgeous.
0:11:30 > 0:11:31Yeah, it's really nice, actually.
0:11:31 > 0:11:33While you're doing the washing up.
0:11:33 > 0:11:37You can keep an eye on the children playing out in front.
0:11:37 > 0:11:40We seem to have got off to a good start.
0:11:40 > 0:11:42Also downstairs, off the kitchen, is a room
0:11:42 > 0:11:45currently used as a bedroom with its own en suite,
0:11:45 > 0:11:47that could be turned into a study.
0:11:48 > 0:11:51But, in the opposite direction we find the sitting room.
0:11:53 > 0:11:57So, as you can see, we just walked through a dining room, there.
0:11:57 > 0:12:00Or I could say dining room/play area.
0:12:00 > 0:12:03Yes. Yeah, I definitely think that would be better used
0:12:03 > 0:12:05designated for the kids, I would say.
0:12:05 > 0:12:07And then this could be your room.
0:12:07 > 0:12:09That's really cosy. It's lovely.
0:12:09 > 0:12:11Is this a working fire?
0:12:11 > 0:12:12- That's a gas fire.- OK.
0:12:12 > 0:12:15It's very practical, especially with little ones.
0:12:15 > 0:12:17I love the window aspect onto the garden.
0:12:17 > 0:12:20I'm just wondering if we could make it even more open.
0:12:20 > 0:12:22This house isn't listed,
0:12:22 > 0:12:24so you could definitely look at making adjustments.
0:12:24 > 0:12:26Yeah, I can already see certain things
0:12:26 > 0:12:28- that I could possibly do to the property.- All right,
0:12:28 > 0:12:31well, let's see how we fare upstairs with the bedrooms.
0:12:31 > 0:12:34- OK.- I'll lead the way.
0:12:34 > 0:12:37Kai and Rachel are so hard to read.
0:12:37 > 0:12:40Although some modernization might be needed,
0:12:40 > 0:12:43this home has so much potential for a young family.
0:12:43 > 0:12:46Upstairs there are three further bedrooms.
0:12:46 > 0:12:48One currently being used as a study
0:12:48 > 0:12:50could work perfectly for a little one,
0:12:50 > 0:12:52and there's also a snug double,
0:12:52 > 0:12:54plus a family shower room.
0:12:54 > 0:12:56Here's the master bedroom.
0:12:56 > 0:12:58- How does it feel?- It's nice.
0:12:58 > 0:13:01I mean there's built-in wardrobes and I think you could fit
0:13:01 > 0:13:03quite a sizeable bed there and things.
0:13:03 > 0:13:05- It feels light.- Yeah.
0:13:05 > 0:13:08Come on, talk to me, Kai.
0:13:08 > 0:13:10Talk to me. A bit small, is that what you were going to say?
0:13:10 > 0:13:14- Yeah, a little bit on the small side for me.- He's so polite, isn't he?
0:13:14 > 0:13:16It's nice the way they followed through
0:13:16 > 0:13:19the same wood as the kitchen and stuff.
0:13:19 > 0:13:20Yeah, let's go downstairs.
0:13:20 > 0:13:21We can talk about the price,
0:13:21 > 0:13:26and whether there's any room for you to have a study perhaps outside.
0:13:26 > 0:13:27- OK.- OK.
0:13:27 > 0:13:31The size upstairs might be a bit more squeezed than they'd hoped,
0:13:31 > 0:13:33but moving outside, we'll find out
0:13:33 > 0:13:35if the garden will bring them back round.
0:13:35 > 0:13:38The entire grounds lie to the front of the property,
0:13:38 > 0:13:42and they are a good size, clearly well-loved.
0:13:42 > 0:13:44However, some adjustments may need to be made
0:13:44 > 0:13:47to make the space a little bit more child-friendly.
0:13:49 > 0:13:53So, we do have a rather beautiful front garden here.
0:13:53 > 0:13:57I just think it'd probably make sense to take all this back,
0:13:57 > 0:13:59just give us a bigger space out here.
0:13:59 > 0:14:01I'm actually quite fond of the pond,
0:14:01 > 0:14:03but I think with a three-year-old and a two-year-old,
0:14:03 > 0:14:06it's probably safer that we do something else with that,
0:14:06 > 0:14:09- I would say.- Yeah.- You've actually got the garage, here,
0:14:09 > 0:14:10which is made of stone.
0:14:10 > 0:14:13Next door to it is actually a carport.
0:14:13 > 0:14:14- OK.- Now, Kai,
0:14:14 > 0:14:20what you could do is convert the garage and make it into an office.
0:14:20 > 0:14:22I think certainly if we've got electricity to the garage,
0:14:22 > 0:14:26I think it'd be a really easy process just to convert that.
0:14:26 > 0:14:28How easy is it going to be to price this one?
0:14:28 > 0:14:31I would think it's roughly around 460.
0:14:31 > 0:14:36I'd probably go a little bit higher than that, probably 465,000.
0:14:36 > 0:14:41OK. The asking price is right on the top of your budget.
0:14:41 > 0:14:45£475,000.
0:14:45 > 0:14:48However, they're happy to negotiate.
0:14:48 > 0:14:51Yeah. It's a great property, I'm quite excited by it.
0:14:51 > 0:14:53Do you want to have another look around on your own this time?
0:14:53 > 0:14:55- Yes, please.- Please do.- Thank you.
0:14:58 > 0:15:02On budget at £475,000,
0:15:02 > 0:15:04this 1980s barn conversion
0:15:04 > 0:15:06has all the potential for a family home
0:15:06 > 0:15:10with a large kitchen/diner and four bedrooms.
0:15:10 > 0:15:13A detached garage could become Kai's private study
0:15:13 > 0:15:16and the garden is beautifully maintained.
0:15:16 > 0:15:18First impressions of the house, really good.
0:15:18 > 0:15:20Certainly has a bit of potential.
0:15:20 > 0:15:23The only thing that lets it down slightly for me,
0:15:23 > 0:15:25I would say, is the upstairs space.
0:15:25 > 0:15:26It feels a little bit claustrophobic.
0:15:26 > 0:15:29I love the garden. I think the aspect,
0:15:29 > 0:15:33especially from the front room and everything, I think it's beautiful.
0:15:33 > 0:15:35Honestly I'd like it to be a bit bigger.
0:15:38 > 0:15:39So, there you have it.
0:15:39 > 0:15:41That's our first property.
0:15:41 > 0:15:43How are you both feeling?
0:15:43 > 0:15:45Really interesting first property.
0:15:45 > 0:15:46I think it gives us a lot to think about.
0:15:46 > 0:15:48- Good.- Yeah, I'm pleased with it.
0:15:48 > 0:15:51Excellent. And we've got another one lined up to show you.
0:15:51 > 0:15:52- Thank you.- OK.
0:16:00 > 0:16:02Covering 1,600 square miles,
0:16:02 > 0:16:06Somerset contains a wide variety of different habitats,
0:16:06 > 0:16:10from the thick wooded heathland of the Quantock Hills,
0:16:10 > 0:16:13to the wide stretching wetlands of the Somerset levels.
0:16:13 > 0:16:18In fact, the county is home to over 2,000 local wildlife sites.
0:16:20 > 0:16:22Our couple will be keen to get out and about
0:16:22 > 0:16:25with their two young children once they've moved.
0:16:27 > 0:16:29To learn more about their new surroundings,
0:16:29 > 0:16:33they're meeting nature and wellbeing manager Jolyon Chesworth
0:16:33 > 0:16:37from the Somerset Wildlife Trust at the Quants Nature Reserve
0:16:37 > 0:16:38in the Black Down Hills.
0:16:38 > 0:16:40- What an amazing office you've got. - Gorgeous, isn't it?
0:16:40 > 0:16:42The sun's out, the birds are singing.
0:16:42 > 0:16:43It's a shame we didn't bring the kids.
0:16:43 > 0:16:45They would have absolutely loved it here.
0:16:45 > 0:16:47Yeah, these places are great for kids.
0:16:47 > 0:16:50There's so many adventures to be had and places to explore.
0:16:50 > 0:16:52Kids spend so much time looking at screens these days,
0:16:52 > 0:16:55it's really important to get out and reconnect with nature.
0:16:55 > 0:16:58So, we're coming into spring, the flowers are starting to blossom,
0:16:58 > 0:16:59we've got bees out and about,
0:16:59 > 0:17:01we've got reptiles starting to emerge.
0:17:01 > 0:17:03- So, why don't we go and have a look? - Great, sounds good.
0:17:05 > 0:17:07When Kai and Rachel move to Somerset
0:17:07 > 0:17:09they'll be sharing their new home with seven species
0:17:09 > 0:17:11that are threatened globally.
0:17:13 > 0:17:15These include the large blue butterfly,
0:17:15 > 0:17:20which is the biggest and rarest blue butterfly in the UK.
0:17:20 > 0:17:22- See this here?- Yeah. - This is a fungus.
0:17:22 > 0:17:25This has actually been used for thousands of years
0:17:25 > 0:17:26for lighting fires.
0:17:26 > 0:17:29If it's dry and it's broken off, then it can take a spark.
0:17:29 > 0:17:32It's also a great little micro-habitat for invertebrates.
0:17:32 > 0:17:35It often has little gaps and cracks and splits,
0:17:35 > 0:17:37and inside there little invertebrates will live
0:17:37 > 0:17:40- and get shelter from it as well. - Great.- That's amazing.
0:17:41 > 0:17:45The Quants Nature Reserve covers 34 acres,
0:17:45 > 0:17:49and is an important site for a variety of birds.
0:17:49 > 0:17:54A keen eye in spring may even spot a garden warbler or a nuthatch -
0:17:54 > 0:17:59the latter of which has a reputation for being particularly noisy.
0:17:59 > 0:18:00This is a great time of year for the birds.
0:18:00 > 0:18:02They're all starting to get really busy,
0:18:02 > 0:18:05they're marking out their territories, looking for mates,
0:18:05 > 0:18:07thinking about nesting,
0:18:07 > 0:18:10and there's so much noise around in the natural environment,
0:18:10 > 0:18:11like natural noise,
0:18:11 > 0:18:14and it's really nice to try and tune that in.
0:18:14 > 0:18:16It's really important that we know what's happening on our reserves
0:18:16 > 0:18:19in terms of the wildlife. So, one of my colleagues Phil,
0:18:19 > 0:18:21he's actually out surveying some of the plants and animals
0:18:21 > 0:18:23that we've got on the site. So, you should go over.
0:18:23 > 0:18:25I'm sure he'd be pleased to show you around.
0:18:25 > 0:18:29Having begun with just 15 members in 1964,
0:18:29 > 0:18:31this trust now has over 18,000.
0:18:33 > 0:18:37Key to all of this is a dedicated team of volunteers.
0:18:37 > 0:18:41Phil Bruss started as one, and now works as a wildlife skills trainee.
0:18:44 > 0:18:46So, what makes Somerset such a great place for wildlife?
0:18:46 > 0:18:49We've got a great diversity of habitats here.
0:18:49 > 0:18:51We've got peat moors, we've got reed beds,
0:18:51 > 0:18:53loads of different woodland birds, grasslands like this.
0:18:53 > 0:18:55What are you doing here today?
0:18:55 > 0:18:58The main reason I'm down here is to look for adders.
0:18:58 > 0:19:01Wow. Adders, I mean, aren't they kind of dangerous?
0:19:01 > 0:19:04Adders are actually by nature remarkably docile creatures.
0:19:04 > 0:19:06They'll only strike if you really force them into a corner.
0:19:06 > 0:19:09Adders are actually a species that are in decline,
0:19:09 > 0:19:10quite serious decline in this country.
0:19:10 > 0:19:12But we know we've got them here,
0:19:12 > 0:19:14so we want to make sure that they're doing OK.
0:19:14 > 0:19:15- Yeah.- Does that sound like something
0:19:15 > 0:19:17- you'd be interested in helping with, to see?- Sounds great.
0:19:17 > 0:19:20- Yeah, definitely.- Excellent. Let's go for a walk.- Brilliant.
0:19:23 > 0:19:26Adders are a member of the viper family
0:19:26 > 0:19:28and on average grow to around 60cm.
0:19:28 > 0:19:31The best time to spot one is in early spring,
0:19:31 > 0:19:33following the end of their hibernation.
0:19:36 > 0:19:37Any joy?
0:19:38 > 0:19:44So, she's... Yeah, fairly mid brown with quite dark, almost black...
0:19:44 > 0:19:46Oh, I can see her. I can see her.
0:19:46 > 0:19:48- So jealous.- Yeah, there she is.
0:19:49 > 0:19:51Oh, I've got her.
0:19:51 > 0:19:53Oh, wow.
0:19:53 > 0:19:54As a threatened species,
0:19:54 > 0:19:56adders are protected by law,
0:19:56 > 0:19:58and their clever camouflage means
0:19:58 > 0:20:00seeing one in the wild can be tricky.
0:20:01 > 0:20:03Wow, that is tough to spot.
0:20:03 > 0:20:06You'd completely miss that, wouldn't you?
0:20:06 > 0:20:09What a lucky sighting for our would-be Somerset locals.
0:20:09 > 0:20:13And now we've got to get back to finding that elusive home.
0:20:20 > 0:20:22For property number two, we're destined
0:20:22 > 0:20:24for the village of Peasedown St John.
0:20:24 > 0:20:26Sticking to the north of the county,
0:20:26 > 0:20:30it's a location that has good transport links to Bath.
0:20:30 > 0:20:34This former coal mining village is one of the largest in Somerset,
0:20:34 > 0:20:38and the facilities here reflect its size, including a post office,
0:20:38 > 0:20:41doctor's surgery and multiple pubs,
0:20:41 > 0:20:43offering a variety of live events.
0:20:44 > 0:20:47Our next home's central village location means
0:20:47 > 0:20:49on-your-doorstep convenience,
0:20:49 > 0:20:52and the house itself is just a four-minute walk
0:20:52 > 0:20:53from the local primary school.
0:20:55 > 0:20:58What do you make of our second property?
0:20:58 > 0:21:00Looks big. It looks quite grand.
0:21:00 > 0:21:03It looks like it needs a little bit of work doing to it.
0:21:03 > 0:21:05Interesting. Looking forward to seeing it.
0:21:05 > 0:21:08- Lovely. On that note, let's start the tour.- OK.
0:21:09 > 0:21:12The imposing facade of these two cottages
0:21:12 > 0:21:14has clearly caught our buyers' attention.
0:21:15 > 0:21:18Originally built in the 1870s for two brothers,
0:21:18 > 0:21:20we're here to view the right-hand home.
0:21:22 > 0:21:24Inside this semidetached cottage,
0:21:24 > 0:21:26there's a wealth of Victorian features,
0:21:26 > 0:21:29and our first stop is the inviting sitting room.
0:21:30 > 0:21:32I'm going to start off by saying
0:21:32 > 0:21:34I think this property is quite deceiving.
0:21:34 > 0:21:37From the outside it has a cottagey look,
0:21:37 > 0:21:39but it's more than meets the eye.
0:21:39 > 0:21:41The fireplace, beautiful feature.
0:21:41 > 0:21:43It'd be nice to kind of...
0:21:43 > 0:21:45It feels cosy, doesn't it, in here?
0:21:45 > 0:21:48Yeah. I'd say if this is the main living space
0:21:48 > 0:21:50I would be a little bit concerned.
0:21:50 > 0:21:52It feels a little bit like a snug to me.
0:21:52 > 0:21:54Does it? Yeah. Well, the good news is, Kai, it's not.
0:21:54 > 0:21:56- OK.- That's the great thing.
0:21:56 > 0:21:58You've got this as your sitting room,
0:21:58 > 0:22:01and then next door to us across the hallway is another room.
0:22:01 > 0:22:03I'd say it's slightly larger than this.
0:22:03 > 0:22:06If the kitchen is big enough to have a dining table,
0:22:06 > 0:22:09it means you could have two reception rooms.
0:22:09 > 0:22:12That would work much better, having two separate spaces,
0:22:12 > 0:22:14- plus the kitchen.- Yeah. Good. Good.
0:22:14 > 0:22:19So, I think we're all agreed it's not the largest of sitting rooms,
0:22:19 > 0:22:21but it's beautiful, isn't it?
0:22:21 > 0:22:23- It is.- Yeah, it's nice. Original features.
0:22:23 > 0:22:27This home certainly doesn't fall short of space.
0:22:27 > 0:22:30As well as the two reception rooms at the front, there's an office,
0:22:30 > 0:22:33and opposite that, a play room.
0:22:33 > 0:22:36Sandwiched between the two is a shower room.
0:22:36 > 0:22:39The office is a fair size for Kai's business needs,
0:22:39 > 0:22:41and as we move through the house,
0:22:41 > 0:22:45I'm sure our couple will come to realise this home's full potential.
0:22:45 > 0:22:47So, you walk through the play room,
0:22:47 > 0:22:51which I guess is going to be perfect for your young children,
0:22:51 > 0:22:54- into this kitchen. - Wow.- It's impressive.
0:22:54 > 0:22:57- That's beautiful.- Didn't expect it at all.
0:22:57 > 0:23:00No. It's very exciting when you walk through, it's just...
0:23:00 > 0:23:04- It keeps giving.- Yeah. I think if it had a title it'd be, "Ta-da"!
0:23:05 > 0:23:07- Because you don't expect it.- No.
0:23:07 > 0:23:11Even those windows, the panoramic view that you get is, you know,
0:23:11 > 0:23:15- incredible.- It's getting better, this house tour, shall we say?
0:23:15 > 0:23:16It's improving with each room.
0:23:16 > 0:23:19- Would that be fair?- No, definitely. Yes, that's definitely fair.
0:23:19 > 0:23:22- I'd say so.- Hopefully that will continue upstairs.
0:23:25 > 0:23:28It would seem the kitchen might have swung this tour in our favour,
0:23:28 > 0:23:30and I'm not surprised
0:23:30 > 0:23:32for it's a bright and sociable area,
0:23:32 > 0:23:36where a close eye can be kept on the children playing outside.
0:23:36 > 0:23:38Upstairs are four good-sized bedrooms -
0:23:38 > 0:23:40a smart guest bedroom
0:23:40 > 0:23:43plus two smaller rooms that would suit Zach and Emmy,
0:23:43 > 0:23:46and they all make use of the family bathroom.
0:23:49 > 0:23:54So, this is one of four bedrooms upstairs.
0:23:54 > 0:23:56- It's big.- Yeah, it's got a nice outlook.
0:23:56 > 0:23:58It's got dual aspects,
0:23:58 > 0:24:00which just makes it feel a lot bigger, doesn't it?
0:24:00 > 0:24:02Now, you're being very polite.
0:24:02 > 0:24:05Have you fallen in love with it?
0:24:05 > 0:24:07I think, first impressions, we haven't,
0:24:07 > 0:24:09or I haven't fallen in love with it, personally.
0:24:09 > 0:24:11All right, well, let's head back outside.
0:24:11 > 0:24:13Let's see if the garden meets your requirements,
0:24:13 > 0:24:15and also we have got to talk about money.
0:24:17 > 0:24:19Try as it might,
0:24:19 > 0:24:22it seems as though this wonderful home isn't managing to win over
0:24:22 > 0:24:26our couple, but the children are bound to like the garden,
0:24:26 > 0:24:29which has plenty of space for playing and socialising.
0:24:31 > 0:24:34This would be our absolutely ideal garden, definitely.
0:24:34 > 0:24:36Loads of space, the kids can run around.
0:24:36 > 0:24:39I can see you playing football with Zach here
0:24:39 > 0:24:41and it's got room for a play area.
0:24:41 > 0:24:43- It's beautiful. - It's got a lot of privacy as well.
0:24:43 > 0:24:44Everything that you wanted.
0:24:44 > 0:24:48- I would think so, yeah.- Let's see if we can put a price on it.
0:24:48 > 0:24:52I'd like to say £455,000.
0:24:52 > 0:24:56- OK.- I would think it's £470,000.
0:24:56 > 0:25:01OK. It is a little bit over that, I'm afraid.
0:25:01 > 0:25:06In actual fact, the asking price is £500,000.
0:25:06 > 0:25:11- Oh, wow.- Now, they are happy to have a conversation with you.
0:25:11 > 0:25:13Tell me what's going through your minds now.
0:25:13 > 0:25:15I do love the property.
0:25:15 > 0:25:18I don't know whether I love it enough
0:25:18 > 0:25:21to want to stretch ourselves beyond our budget.
0:25:21 > 0:25:23Fair comment, fair comment.
0:25:23 > 0:25:26Why don't you go and have another look around again anyway.
0:25:26 > 0:25:29Get out of the rain, and I'll see you in a few minutes.
0:25:29 > 0:25:30- Thank you.- Thank you, Nicki.
0:25:34 > 0:25:37Over budget, but open to offers,
0:25:37 > 0:25:40this Victorian cottage has no less than four reception areas,
0:25:40 > 0:25:44plus a large sociable kitchen and four bedrooms,
0:25:44 > 0:25:46all providing plenty of room for their family,
0:25:46 > 0:25:49plus a guest room and space for Kai's office.
0:25:49 > 0:25:52At the moment I've got mixed feelings
0:25:52 > 0:25:54about the property, to be honest.
0:25:54 > 0:25:56I think Rachel might suggest that
0:25:56 > 0:25:58it's more her type of property than mine.
0:25:58 > 0:26:00I love the kitchen and the garden.
0:26:00 > 0:26:03I think that was the best part about the house.
0:26:03 > 0:26:07I just don't think, necessarily, the house is for us.
0:26:07 > 0:26:09I think it needs a bit too much work doing to it,
0:26:09 > 0:26:12and I don't think financially we are able to do that.
0:26:14 > 0:26:15Have you seen enough?
0:26:15 > 0:26:17- Yes.- Yeah?- We have, yeah.
0:26:17 > 0:26:20Two very different properties today here in Somerset, and guess what,
0:26:20 > 0:26:23we got another house to show you tomorrow, the mystery.
0:26:23 > 0:26:24- Great.- Come on.
0:26:36 > 0:26:40We're in Somerset, helping Kai and Rachel from Guildford in Surrey
0:26:40 > 0:26:43to find a home for them and their two young children.
0:26:45 > 0:26:48With a strong budget of £475,000,
0:26:48 > 0:26:52they're looking for a house that will bring an end to Kai's commute,
0:26:52 > 0:26:55and the start of a new family life in the country.
0:26:56 > 0:27:00Coming up, our mystery house is in a prime position.
0:27:00 > 0:27:03The other side of that shed is the primary school.
0:27:03 > 0:27:05Wow, that's very exciting.
0:27:05 > 0:27:08- Is it too exciting?- No.
0:27:10 > 0:27:13And later, I'll be finding out about a pioneering twist
0:27:13 > 0:27:15on Somerset's yoghurt production.
0:27:17 > 0:27:20It's exciting to think we might be changing the great British palate.
0:27:23 > 0:27:25You know when you meet a couple,
0:27:25 > 0:27:28and you really want to deliver the home that they so crave?
0:27:28 > 0:27:31And that's how we feel with Rachel and Kai,
0:27:31 > 0:27:34and I think yesterday we got pretty close to that,
0:27:34 > 0:27:37although there were a few obstacles in the way.
0:27:37 > 0:27:40So, today, the pressure is on.
0:27:40 > 0:27:42Now, we know this move is all about
0:27:42 > 0:27:46them spending more time together as a family,
0:27:46 > 0:27:49and I'm feeling pretty confident that the mystery house
0:27:49 > 0:27:52can deliver that in spades.
0:27:53 > 0:27:55For our final property stop,
0:27:55 > 0:27:57we're border hopping over to Wiltshire,
0:27:57 > 0:28:01and our destination is the village of Broughton Gifford.
0:28:01 > 0:28:03So, it really is time for our mystery house,
0:28:03 > 0:28:06but I thought before we actually see the property itself,
0:28:06 > 0:28:09I would show you the village. It's rather beautiful, isn't it?
0:28:09 > 0:28:12- It's stunning.- Yeah. - Absolutely picturesque, yeah.
0:28:12 > 0:28:15And it has a real feel of community,
0:28:15 > 0:28:19because here you've got everything you need day to day.
0:28:19 > 0:28:22Not only do you have a primary school with a good Ofsted rating,
0:28:22 > 0:28:26it is practically next door to our mystery house.
0:28:26 > 0:28:30- Oh, my goodness.- Shall we go and take a look?- I'd love to.
0:28:33 > 0:28:35With the location getting the seal of approval,
0:28:35 > 0:28:39I'm optimistic that this last home could provide Kai and Rachel with
0:28:39 > 0:28:42everything that they've been looking for from this move,
0:28:42 > 0:28:46and it's found just under a mile away from the village common.
0:28:46 > 0:28:51So, our final property is, of course, a pretty exciting one,
0:28:51 > 0:28:52the mystery house.
0:28:53 > 0:28:55Looks fantastic.
0:28:55 > 0:28:57It looks good. Looks really close to the primary school as well.
0:28:57 > 0:28:59Kai, the whole point of this move was that
0:28:59 > 0:29:01you could spend more time with Rachel,
0:29:01 > 0:29:03but also to see the children, isn't it?
0:29:03 > 0:29:05So, you can take them to school in the morning
0:29:05 > 0:29:07and you can pick them up.
0:29:07 > 0:29:09- I can pick them up as well. - Having a school so close by,
0:29:09 > 0:29:12and us both being able to take the children to school,
0:29:12 > 0:29:14I just think that would be great.
0:29:14 > 0:29:18- Let's see if it could be your future home.- Thank you.
0:29:18 > 0:29:21Not everybody would relish living right next door to a school,
0:29:21 > 0:29:24particularly those working from home.
0:29:24 > 0:29:27Not only have we moved our couple out of Somerset,
0:29:27 > 0:29:30we've placed the primary school right in their back garden.
0:29:30 > 0:29:34Fortunately, they don't seem at all fazed.
0:29:34 > 0:29:36At around 200 years old,
0:29:36 > 0:29:37this semidetached Georgian cottage
0:29:37 > 0:29:40is one of the oldest properties in the village,
0:29:40 > 0:29:45originally built to serve the main manor house that dates back to 1622.
0:29:45 > 0:29:48As such, it's chock-full of character.
0:29:48 > 0:29:53So, let's see what you make of the inside of our property.
0:29:53 > 0:29:54Come on in.
0:29:55 > 0:29:57- Wow, it's beautiful.- Oh!
0:29:58 > 0:30:01Gosh, that's the reaction that we always hope for.
0:30:01 > 0:30:03Yeah, it just...
0:30:03 > 0:30:06I don't know, I can just see myself being here, straightaway,
0:30:06 > 0:30:09and just being in the village, it just feels right.
0:30:09 > 0:30:11Kai, are you getting that same feeling?
0:30:11 > 0:30:12The pressure is on you now.
0:30:12 > 0:30:16Yeah, I think I look at it a little bit more practically, but when I...
0:30:16 > 0:30:19When I look at everywhere, it's just... You can see quality,
0:30:19 > 0:30:21sort of thing, which is important.
0:30:21 > 0:30:23I'm going to point out that remarkable fireplace.
0:30:23 > 0:30:25Beautiful, beautiful feature.
0:30:25 > 0:30:26Is it a real fireplace?
0:30:26 > 0:30:28It is, multi-fuel.
0:30:28 > 0:30:31And if you like this, I think you're going to love what's next door.
0:30:31 > 0:30:32Great.
0:30:33 > 0:30:38Such an emotional reaction in the very first room speaks volumes.
0:30:38 > 0:30:41Fingers crossed the positivity continues.
0:30:41 > 0:30:45I know the kitchen is a very important space for the two of you.
0:30:45 > 0:30:48- It's beautiful.- It seems quite a social space,
0:30:48 > 0:30:50because you've got this space here, haven't you?
0:30:50 > 0:30:53Yeah. You've also got an additional reception room next door.
0:30:53 > 0:30:57The other thing you might want to consider is that wall,
0:30:57 > 0:31:01whether you could actually take that down, which wouldn't be a huge job.
0:31:01 > 0:31:03- Yeah, open it all up.- Yeah. - And really open it up.
0:31:03 > 0:31:06I love the aspect onto the garden and all the windows.
0:31:06 > 0:31:09It's so light and it's just got...
0:31:09 > 0:31:10The garden looks amazing.
0:31:11 > 0:31:13Wonderful. Right, let's go upstairs.
0:31:15 > 0:31:19It feels as though something very special could be happening,
0:31:19 > 0:31:23as our couple almost seem dumbstruck, but in a good way.
0:31:23 > 0:31:26Upstairs has all the room they requested for their family,
0:31:26 > 0:31:28plus guests, with four bedrooms.
0:31:28 > 0:31:30One is decorated for a young girl,
0:31:30 > 0:31:34and two smaller rooms would be perfectly adequate for children.
0:31:34 > 0:31:37The family bathroom features a roll-top bath,
0:31:37 > 0:31:39and we're heading for the master,
0:31:39 > 0:31:43where we can discuss this house's full potential.
0:31:43 > 0:31:45What I'm going to tell you straightaway is,
0:31:45 > 0:31:47even though it's a cottage, there are four bedrooms.
0:31:47 > 0:31:50That's music to my ears.
0:31:50 > 0:31:51Very happy about that.
0:31:51 > 0:31:53Beautiful fireplace there as well.
0:31:53 > 0:31:55Next door, the smaller bedroom,
0:31:55 > 0:32:00you could look at making that an en suite and then, if money allows,
0:32:00 > 0:32:02you might want to consider going up into the loft
0:32:02 > 0:32:04for an additional bedroom up there.
0:32:04 > 0:32:07It's just exciting that you can actually add to the property.
0:32:07 > 0:32:10Yeah, but you've got enough for a guest to come,
0:32:10 > 0:32:14if you don't use that other bedroom as your office.
0:32:14 > 0:32:15OK. Interesting.
0:32:15 > 0:32:19And the reason I say that is we've got something else
0:32:19 > 0:32:20- to show you outside.- Great.
0:32:22 > 0:32:24It's fantastic that Rachel and Kai
0:32:24 > 0:32:28are up for developing this house interior to make it work for them.
0:32:28 > 0:32:32However, outside will probably hit the mark just as it is.
0:32:32 > 0:32:36Here we find a large-lawned garden with a paved patio area.
0:32:36 > 0:32:39Then, at the far end of the lawn,
0:32:39 > 0:32:43lies a surprise that I think could seal the deal for our mystery house.
0:32:45 > 0:32:49This house tour has gone so well,
0:32:49 > 0:32:54and I'm hoping the chalet, there, will be the icing on the cake,
0:32:54 > 0:32:55because you need an office.
0:32:55 > 0:32:58- I know.- I don't want to give you the bedroom, I want to give you that.
0:32:58 > 0:33:02It's got electricity, it's got Wi-Fi, perfect.
0:33:02 > 0:33:04Wow, it's amazing.
0:33:04 > 0:33:07I can't believe it. It looks a big space in there as well.
0:33:07 > 0:33:10And what's lovely about this garden is, in the summer,
0:33:10 > 0:33:12you're going to hear the children,
0:33:12 > 0:33:15because literally the other side of that shed
0:33:15 > 0:33:17- is the primary school.- Wow.
0:33:17 > 0:33:18That's very exciting.
0:33:18 > 0:33:21- Is it too exciting?- No.
0:33:22 > 0:33:25- I just want to move in. - Don't get emotional already,
0:33:25 > 0:33:27because we've got the big bit to do now.
0:33:27 > 0:33:29So, for the final time,
0:33:29 > 0:33:33what are we thinking this property is on the market for?
0:33:33 > 0:33:37Probably say 450,000.
0:33:37 > 0:33:41- OK.- I'm going to take a guess at £420,000.
0:33:41 > 0:33:43OK. The asking price is...
0:33:45 > 0:33:48£425,000.
0:33:49 > 0:33:51- That's massively under.- Exciting.
0:33:51 > 0:33:53That's brilliant. That gives us, you know...
0:33:53 > 0:33:55Gives us kind of a pot of cash to be able to
0:33:55 > 0:33:57put our own mark on the property.
0:33:57 > 0:34:00So, does it feel like, potentially, your next home?
0:34:00 > 0:34:03- Yes.- I could see us moving here. Yeah.
0:34:03 > 0:34:05How exciting.
0:34:05 > 0:34:08Right, we can all break into smiles now.
0:34:09 > 0:34:12Under budget by £50,000,
0:34:12 > 0:34:15this Georgian property combines character features
0:34:15 > 0:34:16with modern living.
0:34:16 > 0:34:20It has an open plan kitchen/diner and two reception areas.
0:34:20 > 0:34:25Upstairs there are four bedrooms and outside boasts a large family garden
0:34:25 > 0:34:27with a fully-powered timber office,
0:34:27 > 0:34:30all ready to host Kai and his business.
0:34:32 > 0:34:35Just, I think all the emotions of looking for a house
0:34:35 > 0:34:37and wanting to find somewhere perfect
0:34:37 > 0:34:39for me, Kai and the children,
0:34:39 > 0:34:42I think it's all like a mountain,
0:34:42 > 0:34:46and finally we found somewhere hopefully that we want to live
0:34:46 > 0:34:49and everything just materialised.
0:34:49 > 0:34:52I love the fact that the school is very close,
0:34:52 > 0:34:54and I can be more involved in the kids' lives,
0:34:54 > 0:34:56taking them to school, picking them up.
0:34:56 > 0:34:58It's more than a contender, it's...
0:34:58 > 0:35:00I think it's going to be our next home.
0:35:01 > 0:35:05I'm wondering have we ended on a high with this property?
0:35:05 > 0:35:06- Without a doubt.- Yeah?
0:35:06 > 0:35:10- Definitely.- Brilliant news. Shall we go and have a chat?- Yes, please.
0:35:16 > 0:35:19The southwest of England is home to almost 40%
0:35:19 > 0:35:22of the country's dairy cows, which produce milk, butter,
0:35:22 > 0:35:25and of course world-renowned cheeses.
0:35:26 > 0:35:29But on this 400-acre dairy farm in Somerset,
0:35:29 > 0:35:32diversification has led to something rather unique,
0:35:32 > 0:35:38thanks to a pioneering idea of farm owner Judith Freen.
0:35:38 > 0:35:41I mean, this is such a wonderful sight to see, isn't it?
0:35:41 > 0:35:43Happy cows grazing.
0:35:43 > 0:35:47It is stunning. We've got 100 of the actual Guernsey cows,
0:35:47 > 0:35:48and with all their offspring,
0:35:48 > 0:35:51that's the baby calves going through to the fat cattle,
0:35:51 > 0:35:53it's about 320 on the farm.
0:35:53 > 0:35:56And what's so special about the Guernsey cow?
0:35:56 > 0:35:59The Guernsey cows produce a beautiful whole,
0:35:59 > 0:36:02very high butterfat milk. The primary product of the milk
0:36:02 > 0:36:06then goes into the yoghurt and you can taste the flavour in it.
0:36:06 > 0:36:09Now, I want to talk to you about this very special yoghurt.
0:36:09 > 0:36:11It's yoghurt with a twist, isn't it?
0:36:11 > 0:36:13It's a whole milk product.
0:36:13 > 0:36:15I don't take the fat off so you don't have to add the sugar.
0:36:15 > 0:36:20So the primary product is just whole unadulterated and very, very tasty.
0:36:20 > 0:36:21You get all the goodness.
0:36:21 > 0:36:24- You get all the goodness, you can taste the grass.- Wow.
0:36:24 > 0:36:27Judith took over the farm in 1984,
0:36:27 > 0:36:31although it wasn't until 2005 when she decided to diversify
0:36:31 > 0:36:36with a unique range of flavours, using vegetables rather than fruit.
0:36:38 > 0:36:40So, this is where the magic happens, is it?
0:36:40 > 0:36:42It certainly is, that's right.
0:36:42 > 0:36:45The fact that it's in a glass jar, that, to me, is quite unusual.
0:36:45 > 0:36:48I think it is very unusual, and it's 100% recyclable.
0:36:48 > 0:36:51All right, here we go, so this is?
0:36:51 > 0:36:52This is carrot and turmeric.
0:36:52 > 0:36:53OK. Here we go.
0:36:57 > 0:36:59- Mmm.- Do you like that one?
0:36:59 > 0:37:02It's sweeter than I thought it was going to be.
0:37:02 > 0:37:04And you can hear the slight surprise in my voice.
0:37:04 > 0:37:06Yeah, I thought you were very surprised, weren't you?
0:37:06 > 0:37:10Because naturally I thought it'd have more of a vegetable taste.
0:37:11 > 0:37:14And then we go on to our beetroot yoghurt.
0:37:14 > 0:37:15Fantastic colour.
0:37:15 > 0:37:16What a vibrant colour.
0:37:16 > 0:37:19That tells you beetroot straightaway.
0:37:19 > 0:37:22Let's see how we get on with the taste.
0:37:22 > 0:37:25Mmm. Now that's much more beetroot,
0:37:25 > 0:37:28but again it's not overpowering.
0:37:29 > 0:37:31I like the fact, also, that you can actually see
0:37:31 > 0:37:34little bits of beetroot in it as well.
0:37:34 > 0:37:36Yeah, what we wanted to do is create something visually that
0:37:36 > 0:37:38not only was the right colour,
0:37:38 > 0:37:41but that you could actually see the vegetables as such.
0:37:41 > 0:37:45The great thing is you're still looking at new flavours, new tastes,
0:37:45 > 0:37:46- aren't you?- We are, yes.
0:37:46 > 0:37:48Hoping I can help you with some of those.
0:37:48 > 0:37:50I'll have one last little bit and then...
0:37:50 > 0:37:53Mmm. ..let's see what we can create together.
0:37:53 > 0:37:54I'll follow you.
0:37:56 > 0:37:59A recent addition to our supermarket shelves,
0:37:59 > 0:38:01vegetable yogurts are tipped to be
0:38:01 > 0:38:03the next big thing in healthy eating.
0:38:03 > 0:38:07Judith thought ahead and asked me to suggest a new ingredient
0:38:07 > 0:38:09for us to experiment with today.
0:38:10 > 0:38:12Butternut squash.
0:38:12 > 0:38:14- Very good idea.- Has it ever been tried before?
0:38:16 > 0:38:18- Not here.- Excellent.
0:38:18 > 0:38:21Prepared it yesterday and I thought I'd add a little cumin.
0:38:21 > 0:38:24And what's that? That's an eastern spice?
0:38:24 > 0:38:27Yes, yeah, and it's just to bring out the flavour of the squash.
0:38:27 > 0:38:29So, we use a base layer,
0:38:29 > 0:38:32which is obviously the amazing natural yoghurt.
0:38:32 > 0:38:34It smells good.
0:38:34 > 0:38:37- Whole milk.- Fresh from the cows this morning,
0:38:37 > 0:38:40the Guernsey milk has been pasteurised and then homogenised,
0:38:40 > 0:38:46creating a yoghurt that's very thick and creamy, then we add the puree.
0:38:46 > 0:38:50That's about a good concentration, and then just gently hand whisk it.
0:38:50 > 0:38:52If you whisk it really hard,
0:38:52 > 0:38:55it breaks up those molecules of the yoghurt and makes it very runny.
0:38:55 > 0:39:00It's exciting to think we might be changing the great British palate.
0:39:00 > 0:39:02- Yep.- We could be making history.
0:39:02 > 0:39:04- How's that?- That looks really good.
0:39:04 > 0:39:07Have I come up trumps or have I let you down?
0:39:07 > 0:39:08Right.
0:39:11 > 0:39:12Oh, that is really nice.
0:39:12 > 0:39:14Is it? I hope I feel the same here.
0:39:14 > 0:39:16Let's have a go.
0:39:18 > 0:39:20- Ooh, yes.- Very good, isn't it?
0:39:20 > 0:39:21It is. It's got a warm...
0:39:21 > 0:39:23- Yeah, yeah.- ..a warm texture.
0:39:23 > 0:39:26You still get that yoghurt first, that creaminess,
0:39:26 > 0:39:29but you can definitely taste the butternut squash,
0:39:29 > 0:39:31and you can also taste the cumin, can't you?
0:39:31 > 0:39:33- But it's not overpowering, is it? - No, not at all.
0:39:33 > 0:39:35It's just there in the background.
0:39:35 > 0:39:36So, is this a contender for the shelves?
0:39:36 > 0:39:38That's what I want to know.
0:39:38 > 0:39:40I think we'd have to see what the team thought
0:39:40 > 0:39:42- and then we can develop it. - The future.
0:39:49 > 0:39:51Well, what a wonderful house tour
0:39:51 > 0:39:55and what a truly brilliant reaction from Rachel and Kai
0:39:55 > 0:39:57to our mystery house.
0:39:57 > 0:39:59They seemed to love it,
0:39:59 > 0:40:02but the big question is are they going to put in an offer?
0:40:02 > 0:40:04Let's find out. I can't wait.
0:40:12 > 0:40:15Well, I must admit I do feel quite anxious.
0:40:15 > 0:40:18I've been wringing my hands, because when I left you
0:40:18 > 0:40:20it was on such a positive note.
0:40:20 > 0:40:22You loved our mystery house.
0:40:22 > 0:40:26I just want to know that there aren't any flies in the ointment.
0:40:26 > 0:40:27- None at all.- Really?
0:40:27 > 0:40:28- Yep.- Yeah.
0:40:28 > 0:40:30Nope, no, no, absolutely.
