0:00:02 > 0:00:04With her can-do attitude, love of simple gardens

0:00:04 > 0:00:07- and decades of experience...- Hello!

0:00:07 > 0:00:10..Charlie Dimmock is one of Britain's best-loved gardeners.

0:00:10 > 0:00:12Looking good, boys.

0:00:12 > 0:00:15But the new kids on the gardening block are the Rich brothers.

0:00:15 > 0:00:17We want to be the brothers

0:00:17 > 0:00:19that change people's perceptions of gardeners.

0:00:19 > 0:00:22Winners of multiple medals at the Chelsea Flower Show...

0:00:22 > 0:00:25- Oh, look at it turn. - That's amazing, isn't it?

0:00:25 > 0:00:30..the boys have become known for their dramatic outdoor spaces.

0:00:30 > 0:00:34Now, these two different generations of gardening are going head-to-head.

0:00:34 > 0:00:38I know they've got a gold medal, but I can come up with a few ideas.

0:00:38 > 0:00:42They're meeting frustrated garden owners across the country...

0:00:42 > 0:00:44The photos made it look tiny.

0:00:44 > 0:00:47- It is, isn't it? - I'm sure you've seen larger.

0:00:47 > 0:00:48I don't know what to do with it.

0:00:48 > 0:00:51..and will each pitch them a design based on their needs...

0:00:51 > 0:00:52Wow!

0:00:52 > 0:00:53..and budget.

0:00:53 > 0:00:56- It looks really exciting.- It doesn't look like it could be our garden.

0:00:56 > 0:00:58The winner...

0:00:58 > 0:00:59Ta-dah!

0:00:59 > 0:01:00Whoo!

0:01:00 > 0:01:02..brings their design to life...

0:01:02 > 0:01:03Hold on! Hold on!

0:01:03 > 0:01:05Sweet as a nut.

0:01:05 > 0:01:07..and the loser has to help them build it.

0:01:07 > 0:01:10Oh, I'm getting irritated now with faffing around.

0:01:10 > 0:01:12This is what happens...

0:01:12 > 0:01:14- Does he ever get irritating? - All the time.

0:01:14 > 0:01:16..when different styles collide...

0:01:16 > 0:01:18- Who chose these?- One, two, three.

0:01:20 > 0:01:22- This looks like your design.- Yeah!

0:01:22 > 0:01:25..to turn garden dreams into reality.

0:01:25 > 0:01:26Wow!

0:01:26 > 0:01:28Open your eyes.

0:01:28 > 0:01:30Whoa! It's amazing.

0:01:30 > 0:01:31SHE GASPS

0:01:31 > 0:01:32It's beautiful!

0:01:32 > 0:01:36THEY LAUGH

0:01:39 > 0:01:42Whose garden will Charlie and the Rich brothers

0:01:42 > 0:01:44be competing over this time?

0:01:45 > 0:01:49We've had these photos sent through from Penny and James in Northwood.

0:01:49 > 0:01:51It looks like a really interesting garden, actually.

0:01:51 > 0:01:54I think one of the biggest we've had so far.

0:01:54 > 0:01:57Penny Wilkinson lives with her husband, James, in Middlesex

0:01:57 > 0:02:00with their two daughters Bethan and Louisa.

0:02:00 > 0:02:03We've been living in this house for about a year

0:02:03 > 0:02:06after we spent three years planning and building it.

0:02:06 > 0:02:10The original house was a little cottage probably built in the 1950s.

0:02:10 > 0:02:13Which we completely knocked down and rebuilt this house

0:02:13 > 0:02:14that you see today.

0:02:14 > 0:02:16I can kind of see here,

0:02:16 > 0:02:19there is a glimpse of quite a contemporary edge to the house.

0:02:19 > 0:02:21- Mm.- Loads of glass.- How nice!

0:02:21 > 0:02:26And now they want the perfect modern garden to go with it.

0:02:26 > 0:02:30Previous properties, our gardens have always been very traditional.

0:02:30 > 0:02:33This garden here is going to be very different.

0:02:33 > 0:02:38Except for an expensive patio that went in as part of the extension

0:02:38 > 0:02:42build, the 30m-by-60m plot is mostly just a big old square lawn.

0:02:44 > 0:02:47Plain and boring is the current garden. Very functional.

0:02:47 > 0:02:50We haven't really done anything to the garden ourselves because we were

0:02:50 > 0:02:53actually exhausted after three years of building and planning this house.

0:02:53 > 0:02:56This paving around here looks pretty swish, doesn't it?

0:02:56 > 0:02:59Yeah, it's nice. It looks like they've really paid attention to

0:02:59 > 0:03:01this terraced area here but they haven't had the time

0:03:01 > 0:03:04to really finish off the rest of the garden.

0:03:04 > 0:03:07- So it's very much like a blank canvas.- Yeah.- Yeah.

0:03:07 > 0:03:11It tends to be more of a garden for the children and the guinea pigs

0:03:11 > 0:03:12and not really for us.

0:03:12 > 0:03:15There is nothing really to look at and think,

0:03:15 > 0:03:17"Wow, doesn't that look fantastic?!"

0:03:17 > 0:03:19I think she really wants this wow factor.

0:03:19 > 0:03:21- OK.- So really trying to create a bit more of

0:03:21 > 0:03:23a statement in the garden, rather than just...

0:03:23 > 0:03:26- Can we give it wow with the trampoline? - THEY LAUGH

0:03:26 > 0:03:30My ideal wish list would be colour throughout the seasons.

0:03:30 > 0:03:32I'd also like some trees.

0:03:32 > 0:03:34She did say she really wants to bring water into the garden,

0:03:34 > 0:03:38- so, Charlie... - Brings a smile to my face.

0:03:38 > 0:03:42When they were saving for the house, Penny and husband, James,

0:03:42 > 0:03:45wisely factored in the budget for the new garden.

0:03:46 > 0:03:51We had a budget of £5,000 put aside when we were doing the house build

0:03:51 > 0:03:54to allow to do the garden afterwards.

0:03:54 > 0:03:57- And the budget is good. It's £5,000.- Not bad.

0:03:57 > 0:03:59It looks like with all this glass we've got nothing to hide and

0:03:59 > 0:04:01the whole garden is going to be on display.

0:04:01 > 0:04:03So I think we've got our work cut out.

0:04:03 > 0:04:06If we get the garden of our dreams done, we'll feel like we've achieved

0:04:06 > 0:04:08what we really wanted to do about the house.

0:04:08 > 0:04:10And getting the garden to match,

0:04:10 > 0:04:12we'll have completed the whole project.

0:04:12 > 0:04:15Now they know what they'll be dealing with, Charlie and the boys

0:04:15 > 0:04:19will go head-to-head to win the chance to make over Penny's garden.

0:04:22 > 0:04:26So they are heading to the family's house in the leafy Middlesex suburbs

0:04:26 > 0:04:28to take a closer look.

0:04:28 > 0:04:30They are looking for inspiration,

0:04:30 > 0:04:33something to help them create that special design.

0:04:33 > 0:04:35- Wow. This is nice. - This is really cool, isn't it?

0:04:35 > 0:04:37- Look at this paving!- Yeah.

0:04:37 > 0:04:41After a quick reminder of the outdoor space...

0:04:41 > 0:04:43Wow! This is an impressive entrance.

0:04:43 > 0:04:46..the boys head straight indoors.

0:04:46 > 0:04:48They know Penny and James are looking for

0:04:48 > 0:04:50a garden that complements the interior.

0:04:50 > 0:04:53So they want to get one up on Charlie.

0:04:53 > 0:04:57First impressions - definitely very clean, very contemporary house.

0:04:57 > 0:05:01But she is trying to get inside Penny's head to find out what

0:05:01 > 0:05:03she really wants from the garden.

0:05:03 > 0:05:06- So you are all finished in the house.- Yes.

0:05:06 > 0:05:08- The patio, fabulous.- Yes.

0:05:08 > 0:05:11And then you come to a grinding halt...

0:05:11 > 0:05:15With the guinea pigs pride of position, and the trampoline.

0:05:15 > 0:05:16And the trampoline.

0:05:16 > 0:05:18- And not much else.- No.

0:05:18 > 0:05:22So why did you not sort of start doing the garden?

0:05:22 > 0:05:25Because you've obviously got quite an artistic design flair.

0:05:25 > 0:05:28- Not when it comes to gardens. - Oh, OK.

0:05:28 > 0:05:32- The detail is really nice as well. - Really clean. And look at these.

0:05:32 > 0:05:35Little pockets of colour as well.

0:05:35 > 0:05:37The house is very modern.

0:05:37 > 0:05:40And with their talent for contemporary outdoor spaces,

0:05:40 > 0:05:44the boys definitely feel they've got the edge.

0:05:44 > 0:05:46When it comes to plants...

0:05:46 > 0:05:49- Well, I do like flowers. - You like...?- I like flowers.

0:05:49 > 0:05:52And I love pink. So I like brightness.

0:05:52 > 0:05:53In the summer,

0:05:53 > 0:05:57it would be lovely to look along maybe and see lots of bright colour.

0:05:57 > 0:05:59So it could be cottagey, it could be modern?

0:05:59 > 0:06:01- No, I want it really contemporary. - Right.

0:06:01 > 0:06:03- I don't want cottagey. - So you want it to...

0:06:03 > 0:06:04I want it to complement the house.

0:06:04 > 0:06:09Penny's love of colour is sure to please Charlie.

0:06:09 > 0:06:12But the boys have spotted something important inside.

0:06:12 > 0:06:15- These slabs, do you see the way they run out?- Nice detail, yeah.

0:06:15 > 0:06:17That outdoor-indoor living.

0:06:17 > 0:06:21So I think it's going to be really quite exciting to try and link

0:06:21 > 0:06:24everything together so when they are sitting inside,

0:06:24 > 0:06:25the whole view opens out.

0:06:25 > 0:06:27- I agree.- Continues. The house continues outside.

0:06:27 > 0:06:29- Yeah, yeah. Very nice.- Yeah.

0:06:29 > 0:06:31Harry and David are feeling confident.

0:06:31 > 0:06:35But Charlie is still getting to grips with the practical

0:06:35 > 0:06:36issues in the garden.

0:06:36 > 0:06:39The trampoline is an eyesore but it's still

0:06:39 > 0:06:42a necessity for my 11-year-old, that's the only problem.

0:06:42 > 0:06:45If I could get rid of it, it would be great. But it's...

0:06:45 > 0:06:47- It's not happening.- It's not happening for any time soon.

0:06:47 > 0:06:49The girl says no.

0:06:49 > 0:06:53£5,000 may seem a lot of money but this garden

0:06:53 > 0:06:56has to reflect a seriously high-spec home.

0:06:56 > 0:07:00Every penny will have to count if the outside is going to match

0:07:00 > 0:07:01the uber cool interior.

0:07:05 > 0:07:10So Charlie and the Rich brothers get down to business.

0:07:10 > 0:07:12They each have to come up with a design

0:07:12 > 0:07:15that will work within the budget.

0:07:18 > 0:07:21Penny will then choose the winner and the loser will help the

0:07:21 > 0:07:23victor build the garden.

0:07:26 > 0:07:28So who will Penny go for?

0:07:30 > 0:07:32Charlie understands that Penny and her husband, James,

0:07:32 > 0:07:37want the garden to be a space for them as well as the children.

0:07:37 > 0:07:41And the boys appreciate the couple's love for contemporary spaces

0:07:41 > 0:07:44and have won awards for building just these types of gardens.

0:07:46 > 0:07:49Who's come up with the garden of Penny's dreams?

0:07:49 > 0:07:51- After spending some time in your house...- Yes.

0:07:51 > 0:07:53..we realised that we needed a garden that complemented,

0:07:53 > 0:07:55that was really modern and very stylish.

0:07:55 > 0:07:58So what we've done, as you can see from the plan here,

0:07:58 > 0:08:01is that we've concentrated the main design right next to the terrace.

0:08:01 > 0:08:04So you'll get that real impact from when you're looking in the house

0:08:04 > 0:08:05or when you're on the terrace.

0:08:05 > 0:08:07And we've left then a decent amount of lawn here

0:08:07 > 0:08:10which would be for your badminton or your trampoline,

0:08:10 > 0:08:14- plenty of space for the guinea pigs to run around as well.- Lovely. Yes.

0:08:14 > 0:08:18Both designers have focused their plans on the area beside the patio.

0:08:19 > 0:08:23So my design is to reflect the house.

0:08:23 > 0:08:27- It's actually a sunken seating area. - Oh, wow.

0:08:27 > 0:08:33So there is lots of rectangles and squares, very clean, sleek lines.

0:08:33 > 0:08:37And I've gone for a bit of sort of wow, dramatic feel to it.

0:08:37 > 0:08:40So when you're inside the house in the winter,

0:08:40 > 0:08:42it's going to look amazing and make you go...

0:08:42 > 0:08:45- SHE GASPS - "I love looking at it."

0:08:45 > 0:08:48One of the main elements in the garden are these cherry trees.

0:08:48 > 0:08:50With cherry trees, in the spring,

0:08:50 > 0:08:52it's going to give this beautiful punch of blossom.

0:08:52 > 0:08:54Then what's so nice is that during the different seasons,

0:08:54 > 0:08:57summer, you can have this lovely dappled leaf.

0:08:57 > 0:08:59And then in autumn you could have that lovely vivid, red,

0:08:59 > 0:09:01- autumnal colour. So it's really nice.- Mm-hmm.

0:09:01 > 0:09:03It does capture the seasons.

0:09:03 > 0:09:05And it's almost like a living sculpture out here.

0:09:05 > 0:09:08- It will kind of give you that nice bit of height to the garden.- Yes.

0:09:08 > 0:09:12The next requirement was a water feature.

0:09:12 > 0:09:15Now, you're probably looking at that and thinking, "What's that?"

0:09:15 > 0:09:19Basically, this is a very shallow pool of water

0:09:19 > 0:09:20that acts like a mirror.

0:09:20 > 0:09:24- OK.- So as you look across it, you'll see the sky in it,

0:09:24 > 0:09:26you will see any plants that are next to it

0:09:26 > 0:09:28reflected just like a mirror.

0:09:28 > 0:09:32Charlie's integrated her water feature into the sunken garden.

0:09:32 > 0:09:35But the boys are going for scale.

0:09:35 > 0:09:36We've given you a 5m long rill,

0:09:36 > 0:09:39- we know you love the idea of having water in the garden.- Yes.

0:09:39 > 0:09:40It really kind of elongates the view down.

0:09:40 > 0:09:43The element of water is so nice, so if you're sitting down next

0:09:43 > 0:09:45to it, it's quite cooling in the summer.

0:09:45 > 0:09:47You could always dip your feet in it if you'd like to.

0:09:47 > 0:09:50It will reflect a lovely kind of picture of the trees above.

0:09:50 > 0:09:545m water feature? That's practically a pool.

0:09:54 > 0:09:56But Charlie is not being outdone.

0:09:56 > 0:10:00Over here, which you'll see really easily from the big windows,

0:10:00 > 0:10:06is another reflective pool with a cloud-clipped evergreen in it.

0:10:06 > 0:10:10The next thing on Penny's wish list was some colour in her borders.

0:10:10 > 0:10:13We've got these gridded planting beds.

0:10:13 > 0:10:17One of the main things there was to use evergreen topiary.

0:10:17 > 0:10:19Amongst the grasses and that evergreen structure,

0:10:19 > 0:10:23- we really want to interplant that with some vibrant perennials.- Yes.

0:10:23 > 0:10:26So we're going to have pinks, blues, whites.

0:10:26 > 0:10:29It's just going to be this kind of patchwork of colour.

0:10:29 > 0:10:32These are clipped topiary, but rather than being round balls...

0:10:32 > 0:10:35they are square cubes.

0:10:35 > 0:10:41Then all the planting is very loose and meadow-looking

0:10:41 > 0:10:44but with ornamentals that are repeated over and over.

0:10:44 > 0:10:47So I'm thinking oriental poppies,

0:10:47 > 0:10:50they come in reds and oranges and pinks.

0:10:50 > 0:10:54- Red hot pokers, some grasses so you get the swaying effect.- Ah.

0:10:54 > 0:11:00So I'm going for a meadow feel, but with structure and colour.

0:11:00 > 0:11:01The pitch is over.

0:11:03 > 0:11:06Now it's up to Penny to decide.

0:11:09 > 0:11:12I like this one for all the lovely colours that there are.

0:11:12 > 0:11:15I especially love the thought of having the mirrored water

0:11:15 > 0:11:17and that reflecting.

0:11:17 > 0:11:20This one here I really like.

0:11:20 > 0:11:22I think this gives it a much more contemporary feel.

0:11:22 > 0:11:25The garden matches to the house.

0:11:25 > 0:11:29Especially with the water here and the lovely trees.

0:11:29 > 0:11:33I wasn't too sure about this one when it came to being sunken.

0:11:33 > 0:11:36How I would see that from the windows.

0:11:37 > 0:11:41This one here, it may be a little bit too basic.

0:11:41 > 0:11:47On a positive note though, I think I like the grasses and the planting.

0:11:47 > 0:11:50With £5,000 riding on this garden,

0:11:50 > 0:11:54Penny needs to choose a design that fits all the family's needs.

0:11:54 > 0:11:57So, weighing up the two designs,

0:11:57 > 0:11:59I think I know which one I want to go for.

0:12:02 > 0:12:05So will it be Charlie, with her sunken seating area,

0:12:05 > 0:12:08geometric box topiary and two water features?

0:12:10 > 0:12:13Or the Rich brothers, with their 5m water feature,

0:12:13 > 0:12:15formal rectangular flower beds

0:12:15 > 0:12:17and mature cherry trees?

0:12:21 > 0:12:22- Hello.- Hello.

0:12:25 > 0:12:26So, I've made my decision.

0:12:28 > 0:12:33It was a hard choice. But I have decided to go for...

0:12:35 > 0:12:37- This one. - THEY CHEER

0:12:37 > 0:12:38- Nice one!- Amazing.

0:12:38 > 0:12:40So what made you go for our design?

0:12:40 > 0:12:43I think this was just much more contemporary.

0:12:43 > 0:12:45Much more flowing from the house.

0:12:45 > 0:12:48Sorry, Charlie, loved your design but I just think this would

0:12:48 > 0:12:51match more what we would want within our garden.

0:12:51 > 0:12:54Yeah, I think it definitely connects it with the contemporary lines of

0:12:54 > 0:12:57- the beds and things, it definitely connects house and garden.- Yes.

0:12:57 > 0:12:59The boys are thrilled.

0:12:59 > 0:13:02But they will need to keep a disappointed Charlie onside.

0:13:02 > 0:13:05All three of them have to build a garden that matches

0:13:05 > 0:13:06Penny's high expectations.

0:13:12 > 0:13:14It's the first day of the build

0:13:14 > 0:13:18and project manager, Kate, and landscapers Scott and Adam

0:13:18 > 0:13:20have arrived early.

0:13:20 > 0:13:23With a £5,000 budget to play with, the Rich brothers have ordered

0:13:23 > 0:13:27a wealth of plants to really make those borders sing.

0:13:27 > 0:13:29And whilst they are off-site

0:13:29 > 0:13:31planning the remaining features in the garden,

0:13:31 > 0:13:34they've tasked the team with the painstaking job

0:13:34 > 0:13:35of marking out the key areas.

0:13:40 > 0:13:44Penny was sold on the way Harry and David's design echoed

0:13:44 > 0:13:46the sharp, clean lines of the house.

0:13:46 > 0:13:50But that means that every element of the garden has to be planned

0:13:50 > 0:13:51with laser sharp precision.

0:13:55 > 0:13:59So Kate has ordered Scott a digger to speed up the process

0:13:59 > 0:14:00once all the lines are in.

0:14:09 > 0:14:12The boys' design is based around the use of straight lines

0:14:12 > 0:14:17and right angles to create a formal, uncluttered effect.

0:14:17 > 0:14:21It looks simple on paper.

0:14:21 > 0:14:25But a formal garden like this is incredibly difficult to pull off.

0:14:27 > 0:14:31Unlike a cottage garden, where soft features and a more carefree organic

0:14:31 > 0:14:36look are part of the charm, a formal garden depends on its precise lines

0:14:36 > 0:14:39and perfect proportions.

0:14:39 > 0:14:43Here, geometry and creativity go hand-in-hand.

0:14:43 > 0:14:46Features are perfectly equidistant from one another

0:14:46 > 0:14:50and every plant or tree is exactly placed.

0:14:50 > 0:14:53If anything is just a few centimetres out,

0:14:53 > 0:14:55the whole garden looks wrong.

0:14:56 > 0:14:59In Penny's garden, the landscapers start by marking

0:14:59 > 0:15:04the two equal-sized beds on the left-hand side.

0:15:04 > 0:15:05It's there...

0:15:07 > 0:15:08And there.

0:15:08 > 0:15:11Taking care to get the right angles spot-on.

0:15:11 > 0:15:14Ah, there's Scott with the spirit level.

0:15:14 > 0:15:16Hey. Just for putting a straight line in

0:15:16 > 0:15:17if you want to put a straight line in.

0:15:17 > 0:15:20Next door will be the giant rectangular water feature.

0:15:20 > 0:15:23Designed to be completely still and with the tile edge,

0:15:23 > 0:15:26they are sometimes known as a rill.

0:15:26 > 0:15:31This is the measurements for the boys' rill.

0:15:31 > 0:15:34It's essentially a very long, thin, shallow pond.

0:15:37 > 0:15:39What's the plan then, boss?

0:15:39 > 0:15:41Well, we've now got all the measurements in.

0:15:41 > 0:15:44- But, yeah, we need to get digging. - I'll start stripping the turf off.

0:15:44 > 0:15:46- Start stripping the turf off. - Sounds like a plan.

0:15:48 > 0:15:52Unlike the beds, the rill needs to be 45cm deep.

0:15:52 > 0:15:56Let's hope it's in the right place because once the digger gets going,

0:15:56 > 0:15:58there is no going back.

0:15:58 > 0:16:01Meanwhile, out front, Harry, David and Charlie have arrived

0:16:01 > 0:16:04and are psyched up about the challenge ahead.

0:16:04 > 0:16:07- For me, this garden is all about the geometry.- I know, there's

0:16:07 > 0:16:10something quite nice about just simple shapes and form, isn't there?

0:16:10 > 0:16:12- But you've got to get it exactly right.- Yes.

0:16:12 > 0:16:15I mean, everyone goes, "It's so simple, that design."

0:16:15 > 0:16:18- But if it's on the skewwhiff... - I know!- ..it will look so wrong.

0:16:18 > 0:16:20But we've already got the patio here and the path,

0:16:20 > 0:16:23so I think it's all about working from what's already there.

0:16:23 > 0:16:25Yeah, important to get those trees in the right place, isn't it?

0:16:25 > 0:16:26Five massive trees.

0:16:26 > 0:16:28They do look like they are going to be massive.

0:16:28 > 0:16:30Yeah, and like you said, they are so

0:16:30 > 0:16:33important to get in line with each other and get in the right place.

0:16:33 > 0:16:35"We've designed it, now we've got to build it."

0:16:35 > 0:16:38But before they can get stuck into the garden,

0:16:38 > 0:16:41Harry and David have a delivery to take care of.

0:16:41 > 0:16:45The five huge cherry trees they've ordered have just arrived.

0:16:45 > 0:16:46Wow.

0:16:46 > 0:16:49I've never dealt with trees this big. I normally plant them small.

0:16:49 > 0:16:51They'll be fun getting in.

0:16:51 > 0:16:54We have to make sure we get the holes in the right place.

0:16:54 > 0:16:57Yeah, I'm not weeding in the holes, I'm telling you now.

0:16:57 > 0:16:59We've got a digger though, haven't we, so it'll be fine.

0:16:59 > 0:17:02So, whilst the rest of the team work away,

0:17:02 > 0:17:06Charlie and the boys have to figure out how to get them off the lorry.

0:17:06 > 0:17:07Keep going.

0:17:07 > 0:17:13And each one is more than 15ft high and weighs more than 150kg.

0:17:14 > 0:17:18That went easier than I thought. That's a worry.

0:17:18 > 0:17:20Three, two, one.

0:17:20 > 0:17:23The roots of the trees have been wrapped in burlap

0:17:23 > 0:17:24to protect the soil around them,

0:17:24 > 0:17:27which gives them a better chance of survival

0:17:27 > 0:17:29after they've been transplanted.

0:17:31 > 0:17:33Look at that. How beautiful.

0:17:33 > 0:17:38Usually they'll bloom from mid-April and stay in flower for six weeks.

0:17:38 > 0:17:42Cup of tea and we can then work out how they get in the garden.

0:17:44 > 0:17:47Before the trees can go in, the beds have to be finished.

0:17:47 > 0:17:50So Harry has moved on to the tricky rectangular bed

0:17:50 > 0:17:51on the right-hand side.

0:17:54 > 0:17:57This one and the one below it have to line up perfectly

0:17:57 > 0:17:59with the beds on the left.

0:17:59 > 0:18:02So Harry is using a tape measure, pegs and string

0:18:02 > 0:18:04to get those lines perfectly straight.

0:18:06 > 0:18:08Using an edging tool rather than a spade

0:18:08 > 0:18:10ensures a straighter line.

0:18:12 > 0:18:14This design is all about geometry and, you know,

0:18:14 > 0:18:18it's all about squares, rectangles and really fitting them together

0:18:18 > 0:18:21to make this lovely, intricate bit of design.

0:18:21 > 0:18:24The main kind of thing for us was to match back with the house

0:18:24 > 0:18:27because the house is very contemporary, very uncluttered,

0:18:27 > 0:18:30and we really wanted to depict that in this piece here.

0:18:32 > 0:18:36Whilst Harry is deep in concentration, the landscapers

0:18:36 > 0:18:39have moved on to stage two of the giant water feature.

0:18:41 > 0:18:46They are building an internal wall from breeze blocks.

0:18:46 > 0:18:48We are putting these concrete blocks in

0:18:48 > 0:18:51just to make sure that the soil on the outside doesn't cave in.

0:18:51 > 0:18:55Unlike a natural pond where a simple hole can be lined

0:18:55 > 0:18:59and then filled with water, a rill needs to have a proper structure

0:18:59 > 0:19:01to make it perfectly symmetrical.

0:19:04 > 0:19:06Once the block work is done,

0:19:06 > 0:19:09the base of the feature is filled with a layer of sand

0:19:09 > 0:19:11to protect the liner from damage.

0:19:11 > 0:19:12I bet everyone is thinking,

0:19:12 > 0:19:15- "Why have they got the rakes upside down?" - HE LAUGHS

0:19:15 > 0:19:17Cos it's easier to move the sand.

0:19:17 > 0:19:21So this is just to create a nice soft bottom for the liner?

0:19:21 > 0:19:23Yeah, a lot of people think,

0:19:23 > 0:19:26"Oh, I'll just put some newspapers down or something underneath,"

0:19:26 > 0:19:28which does protect it.

0:19:28 > 0:19:32The great thing about having sand is if a stone falls in

0:19:32 > 0:19:36but then you stand on the liner, it just squidges into the sand

0:19:36 > 0:19:39- and it doesn't pierce a hole in the liner.- Nice.

0:19:39 > 0:19:42Charlie's built hundreds of water features in her time,

0:19:42 > 0:19:46so the boys are keen for her to take control of this one.

0:19:46 > 0:19:48I mean, a water feature in the garden,

0:19:48 > 0:19:52it's like having a fireplace in the lounge.

0:19:52 > 0:19:55Everybody is drawn towards it and gathers round it.

0:19:55 > 0:19:57It's one of those things that people are slightly wary of,

0:19:57 > 0:20:00a little bit scared, especially if they are doing it themselves.

0:20:00 > 0:20:03- But when it's done well, it's amazing.- Looks fab.

0:20:04 > 0:20:06It's that liner time, I think.

0:20:06 > 0:20:08I know, look at that. Good job!

0:20:08 > 0:20:13Because Penny's plot is more than 30m long,

0:20:13 > 0:20:15a 5m rill makes a strong statement

0:20:15 > 0:20:18whilst remaining in proportion with the rest of the garden.

0:20:21 > 0:20:25When it comes to water features, if you are lucky enough to have

0:20:25 > 0:20:28the right size plot and right size budget,

0:20:28 > 0:20:31you could have something truly spectacular.

0:20:31 > 0:20:34Throughout history, water has been used in gardens

0:20:34 > 0:20:36to show wealth and status.

0:20:37 > 0:20:40Whether it's dramatic fountains,

0:20:40 > 0:20:42gushing waterfalls,

0:20:42 > 0:20:44or huge man-made lakes.

0:20:45 > 0:20:50And at the 240-acre gardens in RHS Wisley, in Surrey,

0:20:50 > 0:20:52they have all three.

0:20:52 > 0:20:55Here at Wisley, we have a number of water features.

0:20:56 > 0:21:00Ones that stand out mainly would be the canal

0:21:00 > 0:21:03which runs in front of the laboratory.

0:21:03 > 0:21:08This water feature creates a huge impact as you walk through

0:21:08 > 0:21:12and sets the feel for Wisley right from the go.

0:21:14 > 0:21:18But the star water feature here is the cascading waterfall.

0:21:19 > 0:21:22It looks like it's been hewn from the landscape

0:21:22 > 0:21:24over thousands of years.

0:21:24 > 0:21:27But is, in fact, completely man-made.

0:21:27 > 0:21:30The gardeners at Wisley have painstakingly positioned

0:21:30 > 0:21:34slabs of limestone to change the flow of water.

0:21:34 > 0:21:38And then planted around them to achieve a natural effect.

0:21:44 > 0:21:47In Northwood, the water feature the boys have designed

0:21:47 > 0:21:50isn't quite as dramatic as a cascading waterfall.

0:21:50 > 0:21:53But they are banking on it making just as big an impact.

0:21:55 > 0:21:59Now the building work is done, a white layer of gauze is being added

0:21:59 > 0:22:03to protect the lining from the surface of the breeze blocks.

0:22:03 > 0:22:05Then it's time for the liner.

0:22:05 > 0:22:08The key to a rill is that it looks perfectly neat and tidy.

0:22:09 > 0:22:12Penny won't want to see baggy bits of liner under the surface.

0:22:12 > 0:22:14Lower them in.

0:22:14 > 0:22:17So the boys have had it pre-cut to fit perfectly.

0:22:20 > 0:22:22Fantastic.

0:22:23 > 0:22:25But it needs to be fitted with care.

0:22:28 > 0:22:29You can see how neat this is.

0:22:29 > 0:22:31This would definitely be a little bit more expensive

0:22:31 > 0:22:33than if you just get a liner and do it yourself.

0:22:33 > 0:22:36- It saves quite a lot of time though. - It saves so much time, yeah.

0:22:36 > 0:22:38You don't want to stretch the liner

0:22:38 > 0:22:42because then that puts it under tension and then if you do

0:22:42 > 0:22:46step on a stone or something like that, it could make it split.

0:22:46 > 0:22:48How's it going over here?

0:22:48 > 0:22:51It's looking very neat. We like this.

0:22:51 > 0:22:55Unlike a pond, a rill doesn't have plants in it.

0:22:55 > 0:22:59Once the water is in, it's meant to look like a black void.

0:22:59 > 0:23:01So there is no margin for error.

0:23:01 > 0:23:04This water feature is very different to a pond, isn't it?

0:23:04 > 0:23:07Because with a pond, it's very much a living habitat.

0:23:07 > 0:23:10- But this is literally a feature of water.- Yeah.

0:23:10 > 0:23:14- We are going to keep it clear by putting a treatment in it.- Yep.

0:23:14 > 0:23:16So with those types of treatments,

0:23:16 > 0:23:18it's OK if children put their hands in,

0:23:18 > 0:23:22you will get the odd bird drinking out of it, it's fine.

0:23:22 > 0:23:25And a frog might jump in. But it's a bit like a swimming pool.

0:23:25 > 0:23:27- You've just got to make sure that ground is level.- Yeah.

0:23:27 > 0:23:29- Otherwise you'll have a hell of a deal.- Shall we find out?

0:23:29 > 0:23:31- Put some water in? - HE LAUGHS

0:23:35 > 0:23:37It's going to be a big body of water.

0:23:37 > 0:23:40Whilst the pond fills, the boys have moved on

0:23:40 > 0:23:43to digging out the last two beds.

0:23:44 > 0:23:47And are planning ahead for the arrival of the trees.

0:23:49 > 0:23:52One on their own can be a feature, but if you get five,

0:23:52 > 0:23:55- it adds that impact, doesn't it? - I think that's going to be key now,

0:23:55 > 0:23:57to make sure when we are putting them into the beds

0:23:57 > 0:23:59- that they all line up really smartly.- Yeah, yeah.

0:23:59 > 0:24:01So you have that lovely kind of rhythm.

0:24:01 > 0:24:03It will enclose the space really nicely, I feel.

0:24:03 > 0:24:07- Yeah.- Cos if you're sitting in here just appreciating the water feature,

0:24:07 > 0:24:08I think it will be really special.

0:24:08 > 0:24:11- Think of the reflection in the water feature as well.- Yeah.

0:24:11 > 0:24:13As soon as we get these trees in,

0:24:13 > 0:24:15they are going to look quite architectural.

0:24:15 > 0:24:19- The form is going to locate this space in the garden, isn't it?- Yeah.

0:24:19 > 0:24:23- And almost make, like, a natural barrier as well.- They are, yeah.

0:24:23 > 0:24:25And because of the trees we've chosen...

0:24:25 > 0:24:28We chose Prunus Kanzan.

0:24:28 > 0:24:31Mainly because Penny really wanted pink in the garden

0:24:31 > 0:24:33and they give a beautiful pink blossom in spring.

0:24:33 > 0:24:35But talking about them is one thing.

0:24:35 > 0:24:38Not one of them has made it out of the front garden yet.

0:24:41 > 0:24:44One of the keys to this garden is that it looks

0:24:44 > 0:24:46as immaculate as possible.

0:24:46 > 0:24:49THEY GROAN

0:24:49 > 0:24:53The team has been meticulous about keeping soil off the lawn.

0:24:53 > 0:24:57But now it all needs to come out before the planting starts.

0:24:59 > 0:25:02About ten wheelbarrows ago,

0:25:02 > 0:25:05I said to young David, "How many more wheelbarrows?"

0:25:05 > 0:25:07He went, "About four or five."

0:25:07 > 0:25:09No.

0:25:18 > 0:25:21Fortunately, Charlie's keeping an eye on the rill.

0:25:21 > 0:25:24The boys are playing with their toys, forgetting about the liner.

0:25:24 > 0:25:26Totally forgetting about the liner.

0:25:26 > 0:25:29Let's just play with diggers and wheelbarrows.

0:25:31 > 0:25:33See, look? Baggy this side.

0:25:33 > 0:25:34Baggy this side.

0:25:36 > 0:25:37Who has been watching the water?!

0:25:37 > 0:25:41None of you. You've all been playing with your toys.

0:25:41 > 0:25:43- I've been keeping an eye on it. - You liar!

0:25:43 > 0:25:45Mr Pinocchio!

0:25:48 > 0:25:49Oops!

0:25:49 > 0:25:50(Don't tell the boys.)

0:25:53 > 0:25:56Whilst the boys finish prepping the beds,

0:25:56 > 0:25:58Charlie's out the front with the trees.

0:25:59 > 0:26:03Trees are really key to Harry and David's design.

0:26:03 > 0:26:06And they've gone for the huge wow factor.

0:26:06 > 0:26:09We've got big, mature cherry trees.

0:26:09 > 0:26:11What you have to remember is,

0:26:11 > 0:26:13mature trees like this are not going to be cheap.

0:26:13 > 0:26:17You are looking at £360 each,

0:26:17 > 0:26:20but then you have to pay to get them to the garden.

0:26:20 > 0:26:22So, if they are going a long distance,

0:26:22 > 0:26:24that's going to cost you even more.

0:26:24 > 0:26:26If you've not got that much budget,

0:26:26 > 0:26:31you might want to go for something like this cherry tree, Pandora.

0:26:31 > 0:26:35You are looking at about £40 for a tree like this.

0:26:35 > 0:26:37Or this little Amelanchier.

0:26:37 > 0:26:40It's got these lovely white flowers in the spring.

0:26:40 > 0:26:42Quite pretty foliage and quite delicate.

0:26:42 > 0:26:45Then, in the autumn, it's got good autumn colour as well.

0:26:45 > 0:26:48And if you are on a really tight budget...

0:26:48 > 0:26:50how about some whips?

0:26:50 > 0:26:54You can get a lot of native trees like birches and hawthorns,

0:26:54 > 0:26:55great for hedging.

0:26:55 > 0:26:59And you are looking about 60p to £1 for each one.

0:26:59 > 0:27:01Really easy to establish.

0:27:01 > 0:27:04And you don't need to worry about staking them.

0:27:04 > 0:27:06And after about five to six years,

0:27:06 > 0:27:09you are going to have a tree of this sort of size.

0:27:10 > 0:27:14There are no weedy little whips in this garden.

0:27:14 > 0:27:16With a budget of £5,000,

0:27:16 > 0:27:20the boys have spent £1,400 on the cherries

0:27:20 > 0:27:22to make a real impact in Penny's garden.

0:27:24 > 0:27:27But it's now been five hours since they were delivered.

0:27:27 > 0:27:29Draw a line roughly in the middle of that.

0:27:31 > 0:27:35And the boys have only just started marking out where they should go.

0:27:36 > 0:27:40The five Japanese cherry trees need to be placed precisely

0:27:40 > 0:27:43to emphasise the ordered effect of the design.

0:27:45 > 0:27:49And the boys are taking an awful long time getting it right.

0:27:53 > 0:27:56- I think it looks right. - I think you have to do it.

0:27:56 > 0:27:58Yeah, looks good. It just looked...

0:27:58 > 0:28:00Well, you expect it to be the same as that, don't you?

0:28:00 > 0:28:03Just working out the trees and spacing.

0:28:03 > 0:28:07- OK.- They need to be equal. - So, those forks...?- Yeah.- OK.

0:28:07 > 0:28:09Right, I'm with you now.

0:28:09 > 0:28:12- One, two, three... - And there's one up there.- ..four.

0:28:12 > 0:28:15- And one... Five. - That's the last one.

0:28:15 > 0:28:18That's the difficult bit. Now we've just got to plant them.

0:28:18 > 0:28:19That's easy(!)

0:28:21 > 0:28:26It may not be her design, but Charlie's right to be nervous.

0:28:26 > 0:28:30Planting five mature trees is a huge task.

0:28:30 > 0:28:34And the skies over Northwood are starting to darken.

0:28:35 > 0:28:37It's good soil, isn't it?

0:28:42 > 0:28:46Adam, we don't want too deep but we want it nice and wide.

0:28:46 > 0:28:50Cos if you have it too deep, then the air can't get through the roots.

0:28:50 > 0:28:53And it kind of compacts and that's often how trees die

0:28:53 > 0:28:55when they are planted mature.

0:28:55 > 0:28:56Right, are we doing this?

0:28:58 > 0:29:03And even though the boys have already marked out where they go,

0:29:03 > 0:29:06getting them in is a different challenge altogether.

0:29:06 > 0:29:08Look at that!

0:29:08 > 0:29:12Nice wally there, Harry, spin it that way as well.

0:29:12 > 0:29:15- And we are going that way.- Whoa!

0:29:15 > 0:29:16A bit more.

0:29:16 > 0:29:20No tree looks the same and the boys want to make sure that

0:29:20 > 0:29:23the best side of each tree is facing the rear windows

0:29:23 > 0:29:25of the house.

0:29:25 > 0:29:26A touch that way. Yeah.

0:29:26 > 0:29:29- I'm happy with that. - Happy with that?

0:29:29 > 0:29:30Perfect.

0:29:30 > 0:29:33I'm so glad I told you, Charlie.

0:29:33 > 0:29:38Meanwhile, Scott and Adam have started tiling the edge of the rill.

0:29:41 > 0:29:46So, the boys have made sure that the tiles match the patio

0:29:46 > 0:29:49and the tiles that are inside, in the kitchen.

0:29:49 > 0:29:53So the whole theme runs right the way through into the garden.

0:29:53 > 0:29:58We've made the tiles overhang the liner by an inch or two.

0:29:58 > 0:30:01That way it gives a really neat finish, you don't see any liner.

0:30:01 > 0:30:03But it also protects the liner

0:30:03 > 0:30:05because then the sunlight can't get to the liner

0:30:05 > 0:30:08and it won't get broken down, so it'll last much longer.

0:30:17 > 0:30:23But on the other side of the garden, we are only on to tree number two.

0:30:23 > 0:30:26One, two, three...

0:30:26 > 0:30:28Whoa, up it goes!

0:30:28 > 0:30:29Well held, men.

0:30:30 > 0:30:32- Whoa!- I'm just going that way.

0:30:32 > 0:30:34Is that all right?

0:30:35 > 0:30:39And the pressure of getting this part of the design to work

0:30:39 > 0:30:41is starting to show.

0:30:41 > 0:30:43- SHE LAUGHS - Only three more.

0:30:45 > 0:30:49Now, now. Now, now. Keep smiley, smiley, happy, smiley.

0:30:49 > 0:30:51I'm smiling.

0:30:51 > 0:30:54One of the reasons for the boys' concern is that

0:30:54 > 0:30:58the trees were one of the key reasons Penny chose their design.

0:31:00 > 0:31:02They have to be right.

0:31:03 > 0:31:07At least the boys are now satisfied with the positioning of two of them.

0:31:07 > 0:31:10And they've tasked Charlie with planting them.

0:31:11 > 0:31:15Because the burlap is biodegradable, it doesn't have to be removed

0:31:15 > 0:31:18and will provide further protection to the roots

0:31:18 > 0:31:20once the tree is planted.

0:31:20 > 0:31:23So, we've got the trees in position and I'm just

0:31:23 > 0:31:25forking a little bit of soil in

0:31:25 > 0:31:27and making sure it's going under the root ball

0:31:27 > 0:31:29so there's no air gaps.

0:31:29 > 0:31:32Then, before the hole is totally full,

0:31:32 > 0:31:35we're going to pop a stake in and we're going to put it down low

0:31:35 > 0:31:37because you want the tree to be able to rock a bit

0:31:37 > 0:31:38but not too much.

0:31:40 > 0:31:44For most trees, a stake should be one third of the height of the tree.

0:31:44 > 0:31:46CHARLIE LAUGHS

0:31:46 > 0:31:49- You're having a laugh. - It's the biggest thing we've got.

0:31:49 > 0:31:53It anchors the root and is put in a 45 degree angle

0:31:53 > 0:31:55leaning into the prevailing wind.

0:31:55 > 0:31:57Should we leave the stake that long?

0:31:57 > 0:32:01Special tree ties like these can be bought at any garden centre

0:32:01 > 0:32:03and will need to be loosened as the tree expands.

0:32:11 > 0:32:15Now the tree is secure, it's important that it grows healthily

0:32:15 > 0:32:18so Charlie's giving it an extra boost with some fertiliser.

0:32:18 > 0:32:21The next thing we're going to do is put some mycorrhizal,

0:32:21 > 0:32:25which is a type of fungus, on the roots, which will help the tree take

0:32:25 > 0:32:29up nutrients and water more readily than if we didn't.

0:32:29 > 0:32:33- So it'll get it going.- Kick-start it.- Kick-start it. That's right.

0:32:33 > 0:32:36So, we've got four litres of water.

0:32:36 > 0:32:39And this is a powder which swells up, so it makes like a gel.

0:32:39 > 0:32:42That helps it stick to the roots. We'll sprinkle that in.

0:32:48 > 0:32:50Like wallpaper paste.

0:32:59 > 0:33:02There we go. And now it's a case of just backfilling it.

0:33:14 > 0:33:15There you go.

0:33:15 > 0:33:18See? That looks quite tidy now, doesn't it?

0:33:21 > 0:33:24Because they add height, colour and structure to the garden,

0:33:24 > 0:33:26more than any other living feature,

0:33:26 > 0:33:30the right tree can dramatically change the landscape of your plot.

0:33:31 > 0:33:35If your garden only has room for one tree, positioning is key.

0:33:36 > 0:33:41Make sure it's not too central as it will dominate the space,

0:33:41 > 0:33:45but choose one that has enough spread so you can enjoy the shade.

0:33:45 > 0:33:49In a large garden, trees placed informally help create mystery,

0:33:49 > 0:33:52and if under-planted with shade-loving plants,

0:33:52 > 0:33:55can give the space a magical woodland effect.

0:33:58 > 0:34:01And if you're lucky enough to have the space

0:34:01 > 0:34:02for a long driveway or path,

0:34:02 > 0:34:06nothing is more dramatic than an avenue of trees.

0:34:06 > 0:34:08They draw the eye to focal points

0:34:08 > 0:34:11and provide shade as you stroll through the garden.

0:34:14 > 0:34:19In Northwood, the cherry trees are designed to frame the new garden.

0:34:19 > 0:34:22But there are still three more of them to go in.

0:34:23 > 0:34:26And now it's starting to rain.

0:34:26 > 0:34:27CHARLIE GROANS

0:34:27 > 0:34:30And the clay soil is becoming thick with water.

0:34:33 > 0:34:35- Nice light soil. - SHE SCOFFS

0:34:35 > 0:34:36Not.

0:34:38 > 0:34:40Everybody moans about clay soil.

0:34:40 > 0:34:43But in actual fact, it's really good soil.

0:34:43 > 0:34:45It's high in nutrients, it holds on to water,

0:34:45 > 0:34:47it's high in micro-nutrients.

0:34:47 > 0:34:51The only problem is, it's quite heavy to move.

0:34:54 > 0:34:58The team get the third tree in. But as the weather gets worse,

0:34:58 > 0:35:01it's going to be more and more difficult

0:35:01 > 0:35:03to correctly plant the last trees.

0:35:05 > 0:35:08INDISTINCT CHATTER

0:35:10 > 0:35:12- One, two, three...- Pull!

0:35:12 > 0:35:15- Let's go again.- You all right?

0:35:15 > 0:35:17See? That's fine.

0:35:17 > 0:35:20Fantastic. Right, now let's check where it is.

0:35:20 > 0:35:22It needs to go that way, does it?

0:35:23 > 0:35:26And the strain is starting to show.

0:35:26 > 0:35:27Which way has it got to go?

0:35:27 > 0:35:30I-I, just from my own point of view, the middle one is out.

0:35:30 > 0:35:31But how does that make any sense?

0:35:31 > 0:35:34They're dead straight with each other, the first two.

0:35:34 > 0:35:35The boys are under pressure.

0:35:35 > 0:35:36No, it's fine.

0:35:36 > 0:35:38They don't want to compromise...

0:35:38 > 0:35:39If we did the two outside ones...

0:35:39 > 0:35:43..but the garden does have to be finished at some point.

0:35:44 > 0:35:49Finally, they are happy and Charlie and Kate can get it planted.

0:35:49 > 0:35:54- Right, whose head is this?- Whoever ordered these great big trees.

0:35:54 > 0:35:57- David!- BOTH:- Harry! - THEY LAUGH

0:36:00 > 0:36:02At least the tiling is almost done.

0:36:04 > 0:36:06And with just one tree to go,

0:36:06 > 0:36:09the boys have moved on to placing out the plants

0:36:09 > 0:36:10that will go in each bed.

0:36:17 > 0:36:18But the rain won't let up.

0:36:20 > 0:36:23And there are almost 100 plants to get in,

0:36:23 > 0:36:25in the worst type of conditions.

0:36:32 > 0:36:35We've created these beds by taking off the top layer of turf.

0:36:35 > 0:36:37And what you want to do, before you start planting,

0:36:37 > 0:36:39is you want to look at the soil.

0:36:39 > 0:36:42Cos there's always ways to improve it, no matter what the soil type.

0:36:42 > 0:36:45This here is definitely clay. And what we're going to do here is

0:36:45 > 0:36:48we're going to dig in some topsoil and that will really help

0:36:48 > 0:36:50loosen up the structure of it.

0:36:50 > 0:36:52But if you were to have maybe like a sandier soil,

0:36:52 > 0:36:55something that isn't as nutrient-rich as clay,

0:36:55 > 0:36:58then you can put in some lovely manure or even some garden compost.

0:37:07 > 0:37:09You've got some nice plants here, but...

0:37:09 > 0:37:11So how did you end up with this planting scheme?

0:37:11 > 0:37:15I mean, the colours are all very sort of calm.

0:37:15 > 0:37:18We want it to be contemporary, so I think going for

0:37:18 > 0:37:21a more muted colour scheme kind of suits their house as well.

0:37:21 > 0:37:24I mean, the trees are quite colourful in the spring.

0:37:24 > 0:37:27- Oh, they'll be full-on.- There's thalictrum in here. There's salvias.

0:37:27 > 0:37:30When the summer hits, it's going to have a lovely... Verbena.

0:37:30 > 0:37:33- It's going to be a haze, isn't it? - It's going to be hazy, yeah. Yeah.

0:37:33 > 0:37:36We've gone for quite a few grasses in this as well.

0:37:36 > 0:37:38So, it's going to go to a kind of purple haze in the summer.

0:37:38 > 0:37:40Then turn orange in the autumn.

0:37:40 > 0:37:43And if you're looking for, I guess, quite a contemporary

0:37:43 > 0:37:47planting scheme as well, then grasses en masse are pretty sexy.

0:37:47 > 0:37:50What we tried to do here is that it's very geometric.

0:37:50 > 0:37:52Various squares, rectangles, but actually,

0:37:52 > 0:37:55but within the planting scheme, when the grasses come out,

0:37:55 > 0:37:57you're going to get these lovely big drifts of grasses.

0:37:57 > 0:37:59- Do you like grasses?- No.

0:37:59 > 0:38:01THEY LAUGH

0:38:01 > 0:38:03We love our grasses.

0:38:05 > 0:38:08Penny has admitted she's not a gardener,

0:38:08 > 0:38:12but wanted to have a colourful selection of flowers and plants.

0:38:12 > 0:38:15And she wanted them to look good all year round.

0:38:15 > 0:38:17One...

0:38:17 > 0:38:21So, to help break up the softer textures in each bed,

0:38:21 > 0:38:25the boys are adding texture with rectangular box topiary.

0:38:25 > 0:38:26Right... Nice.

0:38:30 > 0:38:34It's a really nice way of using a different form in the garden.

0:38:34 > 0:38:36And it kind of sits in with this geometric shape.

0:38:36 > 0:38:39So, you know, you've got the geometric squared planters

0:38:39 > 0:38:42and then you've got this lovely geometric box.

0:38:46 > 0:38:50Box is one of the most versatile shrubs you can use in the garden.

0:38:52 > 0:38:55Its dense evergreen form looks good all year round,

0:38:55 > 0:38:57and is easy to shape.

0:38:57 > 0:38:59So it's perfect for hedges

0:38:59 > 0:39:02or creating architectural shapes as focal points

0:39:02 > 0:39:03or in flower beds.

0:39:05 > 0:39:08They're best clipped around the beginning of June

0:39:08 > 0:39:09and again in September.

0:39:13 > 0:39:14Yeah.

0:39:14 > 0:39:17The last tree is finally going in.

0:39:17 > 0:39:20What did you do in your last life to get this weather, eh?

0:39:23 > 0:39:25Three, two, one...

0:39:26 > 0:39:28Stand it up and we'll figure it out.

0:39:31 > 0:39:33Ahhh!

0:39:33 > 0:39:35Happy, yeah. That's great here.

0:39:41 > 0:39:44But the wet weather is starting to take its toll.

0:39:46 > 0:39:50The boys' design depended on the garden looking pristine.

0:39:50 > 0:39:53But all that lugging trees and plants around

0:39:53 > 0:39:55has left the site looking a mess.

0:39:57 > 0:40:00But there's no alternative but to press on

0:40:00 > 0:40:02and get the garden finished.

0:40:05 > 0:40:08The boys will have to hope the family can see through the mud

0:40:08 > 0:40:10to the elegant garden beneath.

0:40:13 > 0:40:15With James and the girls not yet home,

0:40:15 > 0:40:19it's Penny who gets a first look at the boys' transformation.

0:40:20 > 0:40:23Will she think her £5,000 was money well spent

0:40:23 > 0:40:26or that the new garden is a wash-out?

0:40:28 > 0:40:31Right, there will be a step and a slab. You'll be fine. Keep going.

0:40:31 > 0:40:33Don't worry about it. Keep going.

0:40:33 > 0:40:35Ooh, there we are. That one there.

0:40:35 > 0:40:37They're taking her right into the middle of the garden.

0:40:37 > 0:40:41Open your eyes and then have a little look around.

0:40:41 > 0:40:44- Have a look around.- Oh, wow!

0:40:44 > 0:40:45A wow.

0:40:45 > 0:40:48That's amazing, isn't it?

0:40:48 > 0:40:51- Oh, fantastic.- It is a little bit muddy because of the weather.

0:40:51 > 0:40:53No, it's brilliant.

0:40:53 > 0:40:58Once all the plants fill out and mature, it will look fabulous.

0:40:58 > 0:41:00- Fantastic.- What do you think of the water feature?

0:41:00 > 0:41:03I love that. Love it. Love it, love it. Yeah. It's brilliant.

0:41:03 > 0:41:05And the trees, what do you think of the trees?

0:41:05 > 0:41:07- They're really big, aren't they? - Yeah.- Brilliant.

0:41:07 > 0:41:08- Not small trees, are they?- No.

0:41:08 > 0:41:12- They were a lot of work to get in, actually.- Yeah, I'm sure. Wow.

0:41:12 > 0:41:17The design really works with the house. Straight lines. Simple.

0:41:17 > 0:41:18Not over-cluttered.

0:41:18 > 0:41:20So it works really well.

0:41:20 > 0:41:22Is it kind of what you imagined?

0:41:22 > 0:41:25- It is, cos I think your drawings were really good.- OK, brilliant.

0:41:25 > 0:41:27You could really see how it was going. So, yeah.

0:41:27 > 0:41:31It's just exactly... Not exactly how I envisaged it, but what I wanted.

0:41:31 > 0:41:34- Yeah.- So it is just fabulous. - Awesome.- Thank you so much.

0:41:34 > 0:41:35It's fabulous.

0:41:35 > 0:41:38The rain may have done its worst,

0:41:38 > 0:41:41but the boys are relieved that the client loves her new garden.

0:41:44 > 0:41:45And just a few weeks later,

0:41:45 > 0:41:48after the garden has dried out,

0:41:48 > 0:41:50the transformation can really be seen.

0:41:52 > 0:41:55Before, the garden was a large expanse of grass

0:41:55 > 0:41:58with just a trampoline and a guinea pig hutch

0:41:58 > 0:42:00as its main points of interest.

0:42:02 > 0:42:05Now it's a cool and contemporary space

0:42:05 > 0:42:07in keeping with the rest of the house.

0:42:08 > 0:42:12The five cherry trees provide a dramatic framework for the

0:42:12 > 0:42:14four newly-made flower beds

0:42:14 > 0:42:16at a cost of £1,400.

0:42:18 > 0:42:21The beds are filled with carefully selected flowers and plants

0:42:21 > 0:42:25that will provide all-round colour and interest.

0:42:25 > 0:42:29Along with the topiary box, the plants came in at £1,200.

0:42:32 > 0:42:35To complete this sleek, modern space,

0:42:35 > 0:42:37Harry and David made a water feature.

0:42:37 > 0:42:41Its clear, calm surface reflects the garden around it.

0:42:42 > 0:42:45Sited at a right angle to the flower beds,

0:42:45 > 0:42:48it draws the eye down the length of the garden.

0:42:48 > 0:42:51The boys chose tiles that matched the patio

0:42:51 > 0:42:53and reflect the modern look of the house.

0:42:56 > 0:42:59It gives the garden the wow factor Penny was after.

0:43:00 > 0:43:02I think it's exceeded my expectations.

0:43:02 > 0:43:04Especially the water feature.

0:43:04 > 0:43:07That is just what I wanted. It's just amazing.

0:43:07 > 0:43:09It just really feels like we've finished the whole of the

0:43:09 > 0:43:12house project off now, and it's all complete.

0:43:12 > 0:43:13And we're ready to enjoy it.
