0:00:02 > 0:00:05With her can-do attitude, love of simple gardens and decades
0:00:05 > 0:00:08- of experience...- Hello! - ..Charlie Dimmock is one
0:00:08 > 0:00:12- of Britain's best-loved gardeners. - Looking good, boys!
0:00:12 > 0:00:15But the new kids on the gardening block are the Rich brothers.
0:00:15 > 0:00:19We want to be the brothers that change people's perceptions
0:00:19 > 0:00:22- of gardeners.- Winners of multiple medals at the Chelsea Flower Show...
0:00:22 > 0:00:24- Oh, good turn!- Amazing, isn't it?
0:00:24 > 0:00:29..the boys have become known for their dramatic outdoor spaces.
0:00:29 > 0:00:34Now, these two different generations of gardening are going head-to head.
0:00:34 > 0:00:38I know they've got a gold medal, but I can ham up with a few ideas.
0:00:38 > 0:00:42They are meeting frustrated garden owners across the country...
0:00:42 > 0:00:45The photos made it look tiny. It is, isn't it?
0:00:45 > 0:00:49- I'm sure you've seen larger. - I don't know what to do with it.
0:00:49 > 0:00:52- ..and will each pitch them a design based on their needs...- Wow!
0:00:52 > 0:00:56- ..and budget.- That looks really exciting.- This doesn't look like
0:00:56 > 0:00:59- it could be our garden. - The winner...- Whoo!
0:00:59 > 0:01:00- ALL:- Woo!
0:01:00 > 0:01:03- ..brings their design to life... - Hold on, hold on!
0:01:03 > 0:01:07- Sweet as a nut!- ..and the loser has to help them build it.
0:01:07 > 0:01:10Oh, I'm getting irritated now. We are, sort of, faffing around.
0:01:10 > 0:01:13- This is what happens...- Does he ever get irritating?- All the time.
0:01:13 > 0:01:18- ..when different styles collide... - Who chose these?- One, two, three...
0:01:19 > 0:01:22- This looks like your design.- Yeah!
0:01:22 > 0:01:25..to turn garden dreams into reality.
0:01:25 > 0:01:27- Wow!- Open your eyes.
0:01:27 > 0:01:28- Wow!- Whoa!
0:01:28 > 0:01:30It's amazing.
0:01:30 > 0:01:32- Oh!- It's beautiful.
0:01:38 > 0:01:42It's time for Charlie and the Rich brothers to discover
0:01:42 > 0:01:45whose garden they are going head-to-head over his time.
0:01:46 > 0:01:50We have just heard from this lovely couple in Lancashire,
0:01:50 > 0:01:54Lorna and Luciano. He is from Sicily and has got two Italian restaurants.
0:01:57 > 0:02:02Luciano came to the UK 12 years ago and lives in Bolton, with his wife
0:02:02 > 0:02:05Lorna and their two sons, Bruno and Rocco.
0:02:06 > 0:02:11We all met in this restaurant in which I used to be there -
0:02:11 > 0:02:14- restaurant manager in there. - And I was working part time.
0:02:14 > 0:02:16- That was about ten years ago? - Yeah, was about ten years ago.
0:02:16 > 0:02:20They have just moved in to this house seven months ago and finished
0:02:20 > 0:02:23- modernising it.- That was quick. Seven months?!- Speed!- Yeah.
0:02:23 > 0:02:25But the garden has, kind of, been left.
0:02:25 > 0:02:27Well, it looks pretty cool, doesn't it?
0:02:27 > 0:02:29There is gigantic hedge around,
0:02:29 > 0:02:32- which is nice and green, for a boundary.- And the patio -
0:02:32 > 0:02:35that looks in quite good condition. It doesn't look that bad!
0:02:35 > 0:02:36I know what you mean.
0:02:38 > 0:02:41The home was previously owned by an older couple.
0:02:41 > 0:02:44In theory, with a little TLC, the garden could be lovely,
0:02:44 > 0:02:46but in practice,
0:02:46 > 0:02:49it doesn't work for a family with two young children.
0:02:53 > 0:02:55There is a lot of stone. A lot of stone edges.
0:02:55 > 0:02:58We have got a five-year-old and a one-year-old.
0:02:58 > 0:03:00They are massively full of energy, both of them.
0:03:00 > 0:03:03- Rocco, when we moved in... - He ran straight over to the door,
0:03:03 > 0:03:07straight up these steps, flew, cut all his legs open on these steps,
0:03:07 > 0:03:10so it's like every time he comes out now, we are completely over-the-top.
0:03:10 > 0:03:13- "Careful, don't run!" - "Don't do this, don't do that."
0:03:13 > 0:03:15And we don't want that. We want them to run free
0:03:15 > 0:03:17without hurting themselves.
0:03:17 > 0:03:21So, making the garden safe is a priority,
0:03:21 > 0:03:24but that is not the only thing on their wish list.
0:03:24 > 0:03:27It would be good to have a nice barbie, a nice pizza oven,
0:03:27 > 0:03:30- and make out own dough and make our own pizza.- Yeah.- Proper.- Yeah.
0:03:30 > 0:03:31That would be great.
0:03:33 > 0:03:36At 70 square metres, this is a pretty big plot
0:03:36 > 0:03:40and because it needs to be a kids' garden and an entertainment space,
0:03:40 > 0:03:43the couple have saved hard to get what they want.
0:03:43 > 0:03:46Careful on the steps!
0:03:46 > 0:03:48Quite a good budget on this one -
0:03:48 > 0:03:49£6,500.
0:03:49 > 0:03:53- Wow!- That is big.- So, all in all, I think it's going to be
0:03:53 > 0:03:55a very interesting project.
0:03:55 > 0:03:58Charlie and the Rich brothers now know the extent of the challenge
0:03:58 > 0:04:02that faces them. They will now compete for the chance to makeover
0:04:02 > 0:04:04Lorna and Luciano's garden.
0:04:05 > 0:04:08- This is nice, isn't it? - It's lovely.- So, they are all
0:04:08 > 0:04:10heading to the family's home in Bolton,
0:04:10 > 0:04:12to see the garden for themselves.
0:04:12 > 0:04:15- This is beautiful.- Gorgeous. - Yeah. Really nice.
0:04:15 > 0:04:18They are hoping to get some ideas that may give them an advantage
0:04:18 > 0:04:20when it comes to designing the garden.
0:04:20 > 0:04:25And straight away, they can see why Lorna and Luciano are anxious about
0:04:25 > 0:04:28- the safety of their boys. - Lots of different levels.
0:04:28 > 0:04:30- Yeah.- There is, isn't there? - A bit of a trip...
0:04:32 > 0:04:33..trip hazards here.
0:04:33 > 0:04:38- There is good nooks and crannies around here.- And more level changes.
0:04:38 > 0:04:41Lots of hard surfaces and angles and sharp bits.
0:04:41 > 0:04:43But the garden does have some saving graces.
0:04:43 > 0:04:47- Quite a nice hydrangea, though, isn't it?- Yeah. There is some
0:04:47 > 0:04:51- decent plants around here, isn't there?- Not bad.
0:04:51 > 0:04:55It's not the kind of garden you want to be riding a scooter around,
0:04:55 > 0:05:00- is it, I don't think!- A shredder! - Well...- Don't give up the day job!
0:05:00 > 0:05:04- You've always been pretty cool, haven't you?!- I'll stick to design!
0:05:04 > 0:05:07- Oh, it's a bit of a... - That's not good.- Yeah. No.
0:05:07 > 0:05:11Charlie wants to chat to the couple about their hopes and dreams
0:05:11 > 0:05:14- for the garden...- Lorna, Luciano! - Hiya!- ..and, as usual,
0:05:14 > 0:05:18the boys head inside, for a poke around the family's home.
0:05:18 > 0:05:22- Oh, this is a lovely open-plan space, isn't it?- Wow. It's gorgeous!
0:05:22 > 0:05:26And straight away, they have spotted some signs of Luciano's heritage
0:05:26 > 0:05:28in the decor.
0:05:28 > 0:05:31And that's nice, as well. Look at that chimney.
0:05:31 > 0:05:34- That's got a real Mediterranean villa feel.- It does, yeah.
0:05:34 > 0:05:39And they have used raw materials in here. You have the stone fireplace,
0:05:39 > 0:05:42- the wooden floor - looks kind of weathered.- Yeah, really weathered.
0:05:42 > 0:05:46- Then you've got those picture frames there. Really earthy.- Yeah.
0:05:46 > 0:05:49- That connection with raw materials is key in the garden.- Yeah.
0:05:50 > 0:05:55Fabulous spot, this, isn't it?! Big patio, lovely Yorkstone.
0:05:55 > 0:05:59Do you want to make this into the entertainment area?
0:05:59 > 0:06:04Yeah, cos I think it is right with the sunshine at this time of day.
0:06:04 > 0:06:07- Yeah, hopefully, that would be lovely.- I can see how the steps
0:06:07 > 0:06:10are a bit of a problem, especially with Bruno, who is the youngest.
0:06:10 > 0:06:13Yep. I think if we just had something where the kids could play,
0:06:13 > 0:06:16- which was their area.- We want something to blend with the wood,
0:06:16 > 0:06:20- with the stone and everything, so... - Right.- Steering away from plastic,
0:06:20 > 0:06:24- as much as we can.- We want something safe and sit down and relax,
0:06:24 > 0:06:27- watching them play and...- So, you want them to be a little away
0:06:27 > 0:06:30- from your chill-out area? - Only a tiny bit!
0:06:33 > 0:06:35- Look at this. - Definitely a lot of yellow.- Yeah.
0:06:35 > 0:06:38- That's one bold colour, isn't it? - That would be quite nice, really.
0:06:38 > 0:06:42We could reference that into the garden by maybe choosing one colour
0:06:42 > 0:06:45and have that run through the garden, like a ribbon or something.
0:06:45 > 0:06:49- Would you like a slice of home in this garden?- Of course, yeah.
0:06:49 > 0:06:53- To us, I was brought up with bit. Like olive trees and...- Yeah.
0:06:53 > 0:06:56And the lovely smells. I think that is one of the things in Italy.
0:06:56 > 0:07:00You go and you are constantly surrounded by these gorgeous smells.
0:07:00 > 0:07:03There is something sensory about the gardens. Really lovely.
0:07:03 > 0:07:05- We are not asking much, are we?- No!
0:07:05 > 0:07:07ALL LAUGH
0:07:08 > 0:07:13But this garden is proving to be more challenging by the minute.
0:07:13 > 0:07:16It needs to be child-friendly, have an Italian flavour
0:07:16 > 0:07:18and be an outdoor dining space.
0:07:18 > 0:07:19CHEERING
0:07:19 > 0:07:25- Ooh. Careful.- The reality is that the £6,500 budget
0:07:25 > 0:07:28- could be spread pretty thin. - Up-a-do!
0:07:30 > 0:07:33So, our rival designers get their thinking caps on. Each of them
0:07:33 > 0:07:37will come up with a design for Lorna and Luciano's garden that works
0:07:37 > 0:07:38within their budget.
0:07:39 > 0:07:43The couple will then have to choose a winner and whoever loses
0:07:43 > 0:07:46will have to help the winner build the garden.
0:07:50 > 0:07:53So, who will the couple go for? Will it be Charlie,
0:07:53 > 0:07:56with her practical approach and years of experience
0:07:56 > 0:07:59- in creating family gardens? - Right, here we go!
0:07:59 > 0:08:02- Oh, wow. - Wow. That looks amazing.- Right.
0:08:02 > 0:08:07Or the boys, who now have a clear idea of this couple's taste?
0:08:07 > 0:08:10Can they put that insider knowledge to good use?
0:08:11 > 0:08:13- Oh, wow.- That looks good, eh?
0:08:13 > 0:08:15Good first impressions. Good.
0:08:16 > 0:08:19It all boils down to this - the pitch.
0:08:19 > 0:08:22We know that you needed a very family garden -
0:08:22 > 0:08:25something that is really family-orientated - and what
0:08:25 > 0:08:27we have done is split it subtly into two kind of spaces.
0:08:27 > 0:08:30You have got more of an adult-orientated area here
0:08:30 > 0:08:33and then you have got the more child-friendly area at the back.
0:08:33 > 0:08:36We want to use this original patio area at the top as your
0:08:36 > 0:08:39- al fresco area.- Yes.- You can have the little pizza oven,
0:08:39 > 0:08:44so really encourage you to eat out and enjoy that aspect of the garden.
0:08:44 > 0:08:47- That sounds amazing.- So, this is half a garden for the grown-ups
0:08:47 > 0:08:51and half for your children to use up all their energy.
0:08:51 > 0:08:57I have basically taken the wall out on the patio, the lower patio.
0:08:57 > 0:09:01That way, it will make that patio seem bigger. And then, I want to
0:09:01 > 0:09:06- sweep the lawn up to this higher level...- OK.- ..which is going to be
0:09:06 > 0:09:10the adults' area, with your pizza oven.
0:09:10 > 0:09:14Both designers have taken on board that Luciano's a dab hand
0:09:14 > 0:09:18with the pizza dough and wants an entertainment space.
0:09:20 > 0:09:23But Charlie is about to go one better and has included
0:09:23 > 0:09:25some Mediterranean planting.
0:09:28 > 0:09:31To get the Italian, sort of, feel to it, I have gone for
0:09:31 > 0:09:37cypress trees - Italian cypress trees - that spiral round, following
0:09:37 > 0:09:41the arc of the lawn round, up to this patio area.
0:09:41 > 0:09:43Oh, that's lovely.
0:09:43 > 0:09:48Not to be outdone, the boys have also chosen plants that will remind
0:09:48 > 0:09:53Luciano of home - and will stand up to the rigour of two young boys.
0:09:53 > 0:09:56We want to give you large drifts of lavender and this is, kind of,
0:09:56 > 0:10:00going to give you this lovely, kind of, floral display in the summer,
0:10:00 > 0:10:03but will give you nice, robust, kind of beds, so that Rocco and Bruno
0:10:03 > 0:10:06can kick footballs in them and they are not going to mess up,
0:10:06 > 0:10:10- you know, all those beds.- We have also got this avenue of olive trees
0:10:10 > 0:10:14here, as well, so it's a really nice extended avenue that leads your eye
0:10:14 > 0:10:17- down the garden.- At night time, we would light these up.
0:10:17 > 0:10:18Oh, I like that.
0:10:18 > 0:10:23The designers seem to be neck-and-neck, at this stage.
0:10:25 > 0:10:29But how will their gardens appeal to Bruno and Rocco?
0:10:33 > 0:10:37This area down the bottom of the garden is going to be their area.
0:10:37 > 0:10:43The entrance way is a tunnel, that they will have to crawl through.
0:10:43 > 0:10:45That sounds amazing. I think I will play with it.
0:10:45 > 0:10:47ALL LAUGH
0:10:47 > 0:10:50The back here is going to be the child-friendly area.
0:10:50 > 0:10:53We want to make it fun, so you enter through this willow tunnel
0:10:53 > 0:10:56and it would be living, so it would be something which could change.
0:10:56 > 0:11:00You could trim it or add to it. This would lead to a softer lawn area,
0:11:00 > 0:11:02where you could have a little willow hut.
0:11:02 > 0:11:05Great minds think alike and, incredibly, the designers
0:11:05 > 0:11:10have had very similar ideas. But Charlie hasn't finished yet.
0:11:10 > 0:11:12She has added a water feature.
0:11:14 > 0:11:18I've got very shallow trays of water that drop from one level
0:11:18 > 0:11:20to the next and then disappear into a reservoir.
0:11:20 > 0:11:24So, the children will be able to put their hands under the running water,
0:11:24 > 0:11:27but it is so shallow that it won't be a hazard to them.
0:11:27 > 0:11:31- That sounds amazing. That sounds perfect.- They would love that.
0:11:31 > 0:11:33- I will leave you to think on it. - Thank you.- Thank you.
0:11:33 > 0:11:37A smart move from Charlie, but will it help her win? Time's up.
0:11:37 > 0:11:40- Cheers, guys. - Thank you. Thank you so much.
0:11:40 > 0:11:43It is now all down to Lorna and Luciano to decide.
0:11:43 > 0:11:47With the garden currently too dangerous for the boys to play in,
0:11:47 > 0:11:50it's important for the whole family that they make the right choice.
0:11:50 > 0:11:53I like the trees and the lighting at night.
0:11:53 > 0:11:57I love the willow tunnel going through there. That looks great.
0:11:57 > 0:12:00Yeah, that looks amazing. Let's have a look at the other one.
0:12:02 > 0:12:04- Right.- I'm in love with the water feature.
0:12:04 > 0:12:08Yeah, I think that is a talking point. The children would like
0:12:08 > 0:12:12- to touch it.- Rocco would love that. - But they can only pick one.
0:12:12 > 0:12:14So, which is it going to be?
0:12:14 > 0:12:16I think it will be a tough decision to take.
0:12:16 > 0:12:20Will they plump for the Rich brothers' design, with the avenue
0:12:20 > 0:12:25of olive trees, drifts of fragrant lavender and living willow huts?
0:12:25 > 0:12:28Or will they choose Charlie's cypress trees, sweeping lawn
0:12:28 > 0:12:30and water feature?
0:12:33 > 0:12:34It's decision time.
0:12:34 > 0:12:36- Hi!- Hey!
0:12:36 > 0:12:37Hello.
0:12:38 > 0:12:42Right, it's been made. Tough this. It's not been easy, at all.
0:12:42 > 0:12:45But the design we have gone with is...
0:12:46 > 0:12:50- ..Charlie's!- Whee! - That water feature!- Ha-ha!
0:12:50 > 0:12:52I'm sure it wasn't JUST the water feature!
0:12:52 > 0:12:54Why did you end up with mine?
0:12:54 > 0:12:57So, you're right - the water feature.
0:12:57 > 0:12:59LAUGHTER
0:12:59 > 0:13:03- I knew it! - But it is not all good news.
0:13:03 > 0:13:06I think the only thing we'd say that wasn't, kind of,
0:13:06 > 0:13:09in either design, if there's any possibility we could add in,
0:13:09 > 0:13:12just that there wasn't quite enough for the kids in this top area.
0:13:12 > 0:13:15- Something to climb on. A swing. Something like that.- Monkey bars,
0:13:15 > 0:13:19- kind of thing.- I've still got some money left in the budget,
0:13:19 > 0:13:21so I will see what we can fit in.
0:13:21 > 0:13:23And fit in the space.
0:13:24 > 0:13:27I'm just dead excited now, to see it come to life.
0:13:27 > 0:13:31So, it's going to be Charlie's design that gets built this time.
0:13:31 > 0:13:34But there is no doubt that this couple are expecting as much
0:13:34 > 0:13:37as possible for their money. She is going to need all the boys' talents,
0:13:37 > 0:13:39to give them what they want.
0:13:46 > 0:13:50It is early morning in Bolton and work on Lorna and Luciano's garden
0:13:50 > 0:13:52starts with gusto.
0:13:52 > 0:13:56While Charlie finalises some of the finer details of her design,
0:13:56 > 0:13:58the landscapers - Lee, Paul and Falkland -
0:13:58 > 0:14:00begin clearing the garden.
0:14:00 > 0:14:01OK!
0:14:03 > 0:14:05- Have it!- In the skip!
0:14:06 > 0:14:10Since Luciano is a pro and wanted an authentic pizza oven,
0:14:10 > 0:14:14Charlie has outsourced the task to some professional oven installers
0:14:14 > 0:14:16and they are making good progress.
0:14:19 > 0:14:22Meanwhile, Lee and Andy set about dismantling the wall.
0:14:22 > 0:14:25Charlie wants it replaced with a less hazardous slope.
0:14:27 > 0:14:31She wants to reuse the stones for her bespoke water feature.
0:14:32 > 0:14:35- Just wondering where to set this feature up.- Yeah?
0:14:35 > 0:14:38- I'll just mark there the two points we could start at.- OK.
0:14:38 > 0:14:42- What do you think?- I think what we are going to have to do is
0:14:42 > 0:14:45- we are going to have to bring it in, aren't we?- Yeah, set it up dry.
0:14:45 > 0:14:48- Just to...- Have a look at it. - ..have a look at it,
0:14:48 > 0:14:51- because it is in such a... - Funny angle.- ..funny angle,
0:14:51 > 0:14:54we are almost going to have put it and draw round it.
0:14:56 > 0:14:59Charlie's water feature has been specially made to fit into
0:14:59 > 0:15:03the existing steps. But before they start to cut,
0:15:03 > 0:15:07Paul and Andy have to figure out exactly where it goes.
0:15:07 > 0:15:10"Measure twice, cut once," as they say.
0:15:10 > 0:15:11I think it's nice...
0:15:13 > 0:15:17- ..a bit higher.- It looks bigger now. - I like it how it's...
0:15:18 > 0:15:19..not too low.
0:15:19 > 0:15:22- The top one's going to be flush with the top step.- Yeah.- This one will be
0:15:22 > 0:15:26flush with either that or that, depending on whether we drop it down
0:15:26 > 0:15:28- and have stone underneath...- Yep.
0:15:28 > 0:15:31..or whether we sit it flush up to the underneath.
0:15:32 > 0:15:35While Lee and Andy continue to tinker with the water feature,
0:15:35 > 0:15:39Paul and Falkland are unloading Charlie's plant order,
0:15:39 > 0:15:43including her special trees to remind Luciano of home.
0:15:44 > 0:15:45A lovely little...
0:15:47 > 0:15:50..cypress, which is fantastic. A bit of Italy in Bolton.
0:15:52 > 0:15:55In the meantime, Andy has worked out a plan
0:15:55 > 0:15:57for accommodating the water feature
0:15:57 > 0:16:01and is adapting the hard landscaping, for it to sit in.
0:16:02 > 0:16:05- I'll just quickly show you what I'm planning.- Right, OK.
0:16:07 > 0:16:10- Roughly, that from a top height.- OK. - And then I am going to do
0:16:10 > 0:16:15- a return wall back in there...- Yeah. - ..for the water feature to sit on.
0:16:15 > 0:16:19And then, carry on up the side of the step, stepping up with
0:16:19 > 0:16:23- the water feature.- Fantastic, yeah. - The water feature is a one-off
0:16:23 > 0:16:27and it will take all of Andy's stonework skills to display it to
0:16:27 > 0:16:29its best advantage - and please the boss.
0:16:34 > 0:16:37Meanwhile, Charlie and the boys have arrived and she is keen to
0:16:37 > 0:16:41set them one of the biggest challenges in the new garden.
0:16:41 > 0:16:43Going to have a few problems with levels,
0:16:43 > 0:16:46- getting stuff in and out. - And that water feature, as well.
0:16:46 > 0:16:49Yeah! See, that will be fine! No problems, the water feature!
0:16:49 > 0:16:52- That is the pivotal point of the garden, isn't it?- No!
0:16:52 > 0:16:55The pivotal point is going to be the tunnel into the children's
0:16:55 > 0:16:58- play area.- Nice. - So, that is where I want you guys.
0:16:58 > 0:17:02- That's a dream project for us!- Yeah? - I feel the pressure a wee bit!
0:17:07 > 0:17:10But before the boys can place the tunnel, there is the small issue
0:17:10 > 0:17:14of the extra feature Lorna and Luciano asked for.
0:17:14 > 0:17:17The children's area in Charlie's garden now has to fit around
0:17:17 > 0:17:19a giant climbing frame.
0:17:21 > 0:17:24The construction looks good, but we have this to get in.
0:17:24 > 0:17:28We need to get that in position, to find out where that's going.
0:17:28 > 0:17:31- This is the old tunnel tube, is it? - Yeah.- Nice.- It looks quite heavy
0:17:31 > 0:17:34- and chunky.- I know. I think we might need a few more men.
0:17:34 > 0:17:36Pull!
0:17:38 > 0:17:39OK, on two... Two!
0:17:39 > 0:17:41ALL LAUGH
0:17:42 > 0:17:45- Higher, higher, higher. - Paul, your end's dragging.
0:17:45 > 0:17:47- That's the one!- Don't push me!
0:17:50 > 0:17:52- That's right. We've got it. - Right round, right round.
0:17:52 > 0:17:55- All the way.- Go on, man.
0:17:55 > 0:17:59This play equipment will be perfect for getting Rocco and Bruno out
0:17:59 > 0:18:02in the fresh air and keeping them entertained.
0:18:04 > 0:18:08But there are lots of other ways to make a garden appealing to children.
0:18:10 > 0:18:13Dens and hidey-holes come in all shapes and sizes,
0:18:13 > 0:18:16from des res Wendy houses to treehouses.
0:18:16 > 0:18:20But you don't have to buy them off the peg and go to great expense.
0:18:20 > 0:18:24In fact, you don't have to buy them, at all.
0:18:24 > 0:18:27At Ness Botanic Gardens in Liverpool, one of their most popular
0:18:27 > 0:18:30holiday workshops is den building.
0:18:30 > 0:18:33I think it's really good if you can get the kids invested
0:18:33 > 0:18:35in the things they have created
0:18:35 > 0:18:39in the garden. They will want to go back out there and play with
0:18:39 > 0:18:42the things they have made - pull them to bits and make them again.
0:18:42 > 0:18:46Dens can be made from all sorts of materials - bamboo canes,
0:18:46 > 0:18:49fallen branches and prunings will all do the job.
0:18:51 > 0:18:53We all remember, as kids, making dens ourselves
0:18:53 > 0:18:57and how great it felt to be, kind of, in there in that sort of space
0:18:57 > 0:19:00that was, kind of, your space that you've made.
0:19:00 > 0:19:04With a bit of imagination, recycled, upcycled, bespoke, natural
0:19:04 > 0:19:06hidey-holes can be built for free.
0:19:11 > 0:19:13But not in this garden.
0:19:14 > 0:19:19Lorna and Luciano are paying £6,500 for the redesign
0:19:19 > 0:19:21and are expecting a lot for their cash.
0:19:22 > 0:19:26So, we are going to go forward and that way a bit, so that Harry
0:19:26 > 0:19:28- is not quite in that beech tree.- Yep.
0:19:28 > 0:19:32Yeah? And then, the swings come off here. That'll give him a nice space.
0:19:32 > 0:19:36- This needs a bit of pruning, the weigela.- Needs a bit of pruning.
0:19:36 > 0:19:39- A little.- It's nice to brush up against a bit of nature.- Yeah.
0:19:39 > 0:19:42- Ooh, hello!- Doesn't happen every day, does it?- So, we need to get
0:19:42 > 0:19:47- the swing bit on, so we can see exactly the lengths...- Yeah.
0:19:47 > 0:19:50..before we level it all up and get it in position.
0:19:50 > 0:19:53But that means following the instructions,
0:19:53 > 0:19:57which has never been the boys' strong point.
0:19:57 > 0:20:00- Well, I'm guessing... It doesn't actually show us.- Oh, yeah.
0:20:00 > 0:20:05Knowing this could take a while, Charlie has asked Lorna and Luciano
0:20:05 > 0:20:08to muck in and build some of the other play equipment.
0:20:11 > 0:20:15Meanwhile, Andy is keen to get Charlie's opinion
0:20:15 > 0:20:18- on the water feature. - This is coming together well, guys.
0:20:18 > 0:20:22- It's coming on nice. - It's looking good. This is fab.
0:20:22 > 0:20:26- We're getting there, aren't we? - I mean, this is stainless steel?
0:20:26 > 0:20:29- Stainless steel, yeah.- So, this is my bespoke water feature.
0:20:30 > 0:20:34It's got a bit of formality, you know, cos the Italians like
0:20:34 > 0:20:37their formal gardens. So, there is a bit of formality,
0:20:37 > 0:20:40but slightly quirky. We have a reservoir down the bottom
0:20:40 > 0:20:44and that will hold all the water, that is then recirculated
0:20:44 > 0:20:48up to the top and it will just drop down and down and disappear.
0:20:48 > 0:20:52So, the children, they can put their hands under,
0:20:52 > 0:20:55they will be able to splash in the water. The other great thing
0:20:55 > 0:20:58about having the moving water here, it's near the seating area.
0:20:58 > 0:21:02It will be a nice tranquil sound and all the scented plants round here
0:21:02 > 0:21:06will be highlighted, because the moisture, the humidity,
0:21:06 > 0:21:09actually picks the scent up and makes them smell even better.
0:21:12 > 0:21:14Now the feature is in place, Andy and Lee can reshape
0:21:14 > 0:21:19the old stone from the wall and repoint it around the steel frame.
0:21:20 > 0:21:24But it is up on the patio where Luciano's new toy is taking shape.
0:21:26 > 0:21:30Charlie has thrown over £2,000 of the budget at it, so she is keen
0:21:30 > 0:21:32to make sure it works.
0:21:32 > 0:21:36- My, that is a posh pizza oven! It has even got a thermometer.- Yep.
0:21:36 > 0:21:38So, go on, then. How does it all work?
0:21:38 > 0:21:41- What you do is, you light your fire here.- OK.
0:21:41 > 0:21:45- So, just like with wood?- Yeah. Get it all going. Once it is all going,
0:21:45 > 0:21:49you then push the wood back, which then gives you the cooking area
0:21:49 > 0:21:53for your pizza, in the centre. The smoke comes out of the top, here.
0:21:53 > 0:21:56Oh, that is good, then. It is far enough away from the wisteria,
0:21:56 > 0:21:59cos I thought it was at the back and it would go up there,
0:21:59 > 0:22:02- which would be...- No, it all just comes out here.- At the front.
0:22:02 > 0:22:04That is much better.
0:22:04 > 0:22:09So, now she knows the wisteria won't get scorched, Charlie rolls up
0:22:09 > 0:22:12her sleeves and attempts to tackle the unruly climber,
0:22:12 > 0:22:15while on the other side of the garden...
0:22:15 > 0:22:18It's showing me that. It's not telling me what that is...
0:22:19 > 0:22:23- ..or how to put that on.- ..there is a lot of head scratching going on.
0:22:23 > 0:22:26It doesn't look much different, does it?!
0:22:27 > 0:22:29Oh, thickness?
0:22:31 > 0:22:32I'll go back to my wisteria.
0:22:33 > 0:22:36- They're not long enough for that. - No. Isn't it?
0:22:36 > 0:22:37No.
0:22:39 > 0:22:41The wisteria has outgrown the trellis
0:22:41 > 0:22:44and the trellis has seen better days.
0:22:45 > 0:22:48Ideally, Charlie would prune the plant and retrain it,
0:22:48 > 0:22:51but it is about to flower.
0:22:51 > 0:22:54If I cut this now, you will find it will bleed,
0:22:54 > 0:22:57which will take the vigour out of the climber itself.
0:22:57 > 0:23:01Also, they will lose all their lovely flowers.
0:23:01 > 0:23:03It's best to prune wisteria...
0:23:04 > 0:23:08..when they are dormant, in the winter, to get the framework,
0:23:08 > 0:23:11and then, in the summertime, when you get these long, whippy ones,
0:23:11 > 0:23:15you take those back by two-thirds. That increases the number
0:23:15 > 0:23:19of flowering spurs you get. But I want to get all the trellis out
0:23:19 > 0:23:22and take this trellis down, cos it's not a thing of beauty.
0:23:22 > 0:23:25Then, I am going to put a partition up, with round posts.
0:23:25 > 0:23:28And to try and get everything to tie together,
0:23:28 > 0:23:31I am going to put them in a curve, which will mirror the curve
0:23:31 > 0:23:33of the water feature.
0:23:33 > 0:23:37And Andy is taking great care to further enhance the curves of
0:23:37 > 0:23:40Charlie's design with carefully-hewn stonework
0:23:40 > 0:23:42around the stainless steel trains.
0:23:44 > 0:23:45Let's see if this fits.
0:23:46 > 0:23:49Oh, yeah, that's looking good.
0:23:49 > 0:23:52The rustic Yorkstone up against the modern stainless steel
0:23:52 > 0:23:56will look fabulous in this family's garden.
0:23:58 > 0:24:01Using any type of stone is really worth thinking about
0:24:01 > 0:24:02in almost any garden.
0:24:04 > 0:24:07In a contemporary space, or up against modern materials,
0:24:07 > 0:24:10it adds texture and warmth to clean lines.
0:24:12 > 0:24:15And in a more traditional garden, it instantly becomes part
0:24:15 > 0:24:18of its environment. Even on just a small scale,
0:24:18 > 0:24:21using a natural stone for a water feature,
0:24:21 > 0:24:24or to hide the liner around the perimeter of a pond,
0:24:24 > 0:24:28will add beauty and interest to any space.
0:24:37 > 0:24:41The boys are now finally getting somewhere with Rocco and Bruno's
0:24:41 > 0:24:44climbing frame. But it needs more space, to be safe.
0:24:45 > 0:24:49There could be collateral damage, so Charlie wants to check with
0:24:49 > 0:24:52Lorna and Luciano, before the saws come out.
0:24:55 > 0:24:57So, that conifer.
0:24:57 > 0:24:59Do you mind if we take it out?
0:24:59 > 0:25:02Because the climbing frame that you chose is a bit bigger than we were,
0:25:02 > 0:25:06- sort of, expecting.- It shouldn't be a problem to take it off.
0:25:06 > 0:25:09So, then, can all go over and then there will be enough space
0:25:09 > 0:25:12- for the swings to swing properly. - That would be all right.- Yeah?
0:25:12 > 0:25:14OK, boys, you can chop it down!
0:25:14 > 0:25:17Yes, nice! Right! Don't go back!
0:25:17 > 0:25:18The brothers get the green light
0:25:18 > 0:25:21to fell the tree and get straight on with it.
0:25:21 > 0:25:24- Oh! Timber!- Look at that!
0:25:24 > 0:25:26LAUGHTER
0:25:26 > 0:25:29Not only will the extra space mean Rocco and Bruno can make
0:25:29 > 0:25:33the most of the climbing frame, but it will allow for the other elements
0:25:33 > 0:25:34of Charlie's design.
0:25:34 > 0:25:36You guys need to go that way, a tiny bit.
0:25:36 > 0:25:39Whoa. Perfect. Go on, then. Slide her in.
0:25:40 > 0:25:43- Just!- Just! Doesn't look too large, does it?
0:25:45 > 0:25:49Now the boys are cracking on with the play area, Charlie can get back
0:25:49 > 0:25:54to constructing the new support for the beautiful wisteria.
0:25:54 > 0:25:56So, the trellis is out. The ugly trellis.
0:25:56 > 0:25:59And now, I am going to put these poles in, like this,
0:25:59 > 0:26:01all the way round, on a curve,
0:26:01 > 0:26:04to pick up the curve
0:26:04 > 0:26:08of the water feature. And also cut them, so that they curve,
0:26:08 > 0:26:12so that, it, sort of, ties everything together.
0:26:12 > 0:26:15So, it is all curves, curves and more curves.
0:26:17 > 0:26:20Charlie is making a guide hole for each of the wooden stakes,
0:26:20 > 0:26:23with a crowbar. They will then be driven down into the ground
0:26:23 > 0:26:25with a mallet.
0:26:26 > 0:26:27It is a very simple, easy way
0:26:27 > 0:26:31to make a plant support and, value-wise,
0:26:31 > 0:26:33it's quite good value, as well.
0:26:35 > 0:26:38At just £60 for the stakes to create this feature,
0:26:38 > 0:26:42it is a budget option and gives a contemporary feel to the space.
0:26:43 > 0:26:46Charlie's design is really taking shape now.
0:26:46 > 0:26:48The pizza oven is in,
0:26:48 > 0:26:51the lion's share of the work on the water feature is done
0:26:51 > 0:26:54and the hazardous wall has been replaced by a much safer
0:26:54 > 0:26:56graduating slope.
0:26:56 > 0:26:59And then we are going to lie down...
0:26:59 > 0:27:03But the boys are lagging behind and need to get going on the tunnel.
0:27:03 > 0:27:07Lorna and Luciano really wanted that retaining wall removed
0:27:07 > 0:27:10and this gave Charlie the opportunity to give them
0:27:10 > 0:27:11a lovely sweeping lawn.
0:27:11 > 0:27:14This will great fun for the kids to run up and down,
0:27:14 > 0:27:17but left us with quite a lot of excess soil turf and stone.
0:27:17 > 0:27:20With that, we are going to create this soil tunnel.
0:27:20 > 0:27:22What is so nice is that it is going to roll up from the lawn
0:27:22 > 0:27:25and soften this pipe. Cos at the moment, it doesn't look amazing,
0:27:25 > 0:27:29but by the time we have got all that turf on there, it is going to just
0:27:29 > 0:27:32- naturalise into this space. - Yeah.- And what a feature.- Oh.
0:27:32 > 0:27:34A little bigger, I think adults could get through it.
0:27:34 > 0:27:37- That's the dream! - I could probably squeeze in!
0:27:42 > 0:27:46As usual, rain is coming down, so it's important to wrap up
0:27:46 > 0:27:49- and keep warm.- Not if you're a man, you don't have to!- You watch.
0:27:49 > 0:27:51He'll have a jumper on later!
0:27:51 > 0:27:54Just for you, I am NOT going to put my jumper on now!
0:27:56 > 0:27:59Well, what would a day in a British garden be without a spot of rain?
0:27:59 > 0:28:02And it looks like it's here for the afternoon.
0:28:04 > 0:28:06So there's nothing for it but for Charlie to box on
0:28:06 > 0:28:09with the planting around the water feature.
0:28:09 > 0:28:11Put that one there and that one there.
0:28:11 > 0:28:12That looks good to me.
0:28:12 > 0:28:15Can someone hold this one, while I have a look?
0:28:18 > 0:28:21In the design, she has created an elegant curve
0:28:21 > 0:28:23that will be dotted with tall, thin cypress trees.
0:28:26 > 0:28:27Yeah!
0:28:27 > 0:28:31I'm thinking of it like you are walking, you know, in Italy.
0:28:31 > 0:28:34You are walking up the hill and you've got the spires of greens.
0:28:34 > 0:28:36You get that to the patio.
0:28:38 > 0:28:39Yeah?
0:28:39 > 0:28:42Now all they need is some Mediterranean weather to match.
0:28:44 > 0:28:48A new curved bed has to be cut out of the lawn in order to
0:28:48 > 0:28:52accommodate the trees and the spoil will help cover the boys' tunnel.
0:28:55 > 0:28:59No plant conjures up images of the Italian landscape better
0:28:59 > 0:29:02than the cypress tree and its elegant shape has been
0:29:02 > 0:29:06a mainstay of formal Italian gardens for centuries.
0:29:11 > 0:29:14Possibly the most renowned Italianate formal garden in the UK
0:29:14 > 0:29:17is at Trentham Gardens in Staffordshire.
0:29:19 > 0:29:22The Italianate style of garden
0:29:22 > 0:29:25is very strongly represented by its use of symmetry,
0:29:25 > 0:29:28so we can literally draw lines across the garden
0:29:28 > 0:29:31and see the pattern reflected on either side of this.
0:29:31 > 0:29:33It's a very formal layout,
0:29:33 > 0:29:36using clipped evergreens to create the structure.
0:29:39 > 0:29:43Like the trees Charlie has used in Lorna and Luciano's garden,
0:29:43 > 0:29:47at Trentham, tall, thin trees are an important element of the design.
0:29:50 > 0:29:52For a vertical structure,
0:29:52 > 0:29:55giving us a link to the sky above and emphasising the space,
0:29:55 > 0:29:58we have a combination of golden yews,
0:29:58 > 0:30:01which have been formed into cone shapes.
0:30:01 > 0:30:06We also have the dark green fastigiate pencil-like yews.
0:30:09 > 0:30:11This style isn't limited to large gardens.
0:30:14 > 0:30:16Some of the design principles used in Trentham
0:30:16 > 0:30:20can be applied to the average back garden.
0:30:20 > 0:30:23If you are looking to create this feel in your garden,
0:30:23 > 0:30:24but on a much smaller scale,
0:30:24 > 0:30:27one of the things I would look to do is to create
0:30:27 > 0:30:31a formal structural layout, using light coloured materials.
0:30:31 > 0:30:34And it can be done relatively inexpensively,
0:30:34 > 0:30:37using fine textured gravels.
0:30:37 > 0:30:40Look to try and use fine textured foliages.
0:30:40 > 0:30:44The smaller the leaf, the more distant it will appear
0:30:44 > 0:30:46and the larger the space will be.
0:30:53 > 0:30:56Back in Bolton, the rain may be coming down,
0:30:56 > 0:30:59but it is not slowing the Rich brothers.
0:30:59 > 0:31:02We've got a bit of sand left over, so we are using it just to kind of
0:31:02 > 0:31:06create this nice, smooth surface before we add the topsoil on.
0:31:06 > 0:31:08Also, it helps, cos it knits together
0:31:08 > 0:31:10the large clogs of soil underneath.
0:31:10 > 0:31:13So, altogether, it's going to help with drain and it is a good binder.
0:31:18 > 0:31:23Meanwhile, a rather soggy Charlie is working hard to conjure up
0:31:23 > 0:31:25that southern European feel.
0:31:25 > 0:31:28I've gone for three key Italian,
0:31:28 > 0:31:30or should I say Mediterranean, plants.
0:31:30 > 0:31:33So we've got bay tree, I've got two of those.
0:31:33 > 0:31:36So I'm probably going to put them in containers
0:31:36 > 0:31:39and sort of split them from one patio to another.
0:31:39 > 0:31:42We've got Italian cypress, which are really highlighting
0:31:42 > 0:31:44the swirl of the flower bed
0:31:44 > 0:31:47and add that tall height to the garden.
0:31:47 > 0:31:50And then I've got these wonderful olives!
0:31:50 > 0:31:54Now, I have gone a bit mad and gone for quite large specimens.
0:31:54 > 0:31:57But if you shop around, go on the internet,
0:31:57 > 0:32:02contact your local nurseries, you can get some really good deals.
0:32:02 > 0:32:06And I am hoping that this Italian, Mediterranean feel
0:32:06 > 0:32:08brings the sunshine out.
0:32:08 > 0:32:10At the moment, we have liquid sunshine.
0:32:13 > 0:32:16When planting Mediterranean plants, like olives and cypress trees,
0:32:16 > 0:32:19it is good to remember that their native climate
0:32:19 > 0:32:21is drier than our own.
0:32:21 > 0:32:25So dig in lots of grit and drainage underneath the plant
0:32:25 > 0:32:27when you pop it in the ground.
0:32:27 > 0:32:29They don't like to sit in a puddle of water,
0:32:29 > 0:32:30but then who does?
0:32:33 > 0:32:36With a layer of topsoil added to the boys' tunnel,
0:32:36 > 0:32:38they can now get on with turfing.
0:32:38 > 0:32:42Some people may think it would be easier to do it that way,
0:32:42 > 0:32:45but, for us, we think that the hole here is much more important.
0:32:45 > 0:32:47That's kind of the focal point, so...
0:32:47 > 0:32:50Yeah, I think it's nice to keep that as a whole piece.
0:32:50 > 0:32:54Otherwise, you are going to end up patching it with bits and bobs
0:32:54 > 0:32:57and they are going to fall off. Whereas, rolling it this way,
0:32:57 > 0:33:00like we're doing at the top, means that we can get a really nice cut,
0:33:00 > 0:33:03which will create that nice focal point where the pipe starts.
0:33:11 > 0:33:14Lee is finishing off the frame for the wisteria.
0:33:14 > 0:33:17The wooden supports are being cut into a sinuous curve
0:33:17 > 0:33:20to complement the rest of the garden.
0:33:21 > 0:33:23Charlie is planning to add climbers to it later.
0:33:26 > 0:33:28Look at that. A bit of instant gardening.
0:33:28 > 0:33:30It looks like it's been there for ever, doesn't it?
0:33:30 > 0:33:34So, this area here, the seating area, the adults relaxing area,
0:33:34 > 0:33:37is all about scent and colour throughout the summer.
0:33:37 > 0:33:40So, in the springtime, we've got the wisteria.
0:33:40 > 0:33:42Wisteria has quite a scent to it.
0:33:42 > 0:33:45But then we've got Trachelospermum, which is star jasmine.
0:33:45 > 0:33:47It flowers all through the summer
0:33:47 > 0:33:50and it's got a really, really lovely sweet scent.
0:33:50 > 0:33:53And then I have a climbing rose.
0:33:53 > 0:33:55It's one of my favourites.
0:33:55 > 0:33:58It's got very romantic sort of double white flowers
0:33:58 > 0:34:00called Claire Austin.
0:34:00 > 0:34:04A fabulous scent to it and is very good and reliable at flowering.
0:34:04 > 0:34:08I've just got to get them in the ground now.
0:34:08 > 0:34:09THEY TALK
0:34:17 > 0:34:18LAUGHTER
0:34:22 > 0:34:24The boys have moved onto the planting, too.
0:34:24 > 0:34:27On their design for Lorna and Luciano's garden,
0:34:27 > 0:34:31they included a living willow tunnel in the play area.
0:34:31 > 0:34:34So, Charlie has decided to add something similar,
0:34:34 > 0:34:35made with hornbeam.
0:34:37 > 0:34:38Charlie's design is all about curves
0:34:38 > 0:34:41and that's been echoed through the hard landscaping.
0:34:41 > 0:34:44But what we want to do is to do this with soft landscaping,
0:34:44 > 0:34:46with these hornbeam trees.
0:34:46 > 0:34:48And they are very young and easy to manipulate,
0:34:48 > 0:34:50which means that we create this lovely archway,
0:34:50 > 0:34:53which is going to become this very natural sculpture.
0:34:53 > 0:34:55Especially with these, they're like hedging trees,
0:34:55 > 0:34:58so the more you trim them, the denser they get. They won't grow
0:34:58 > 0:35:01into big trees if you keep clipping them. They'll slowly thicken up
0:35:01 > 0:35:04- and become this really dense tunnel, which is really cool.- Yeah.
0:35:07 > 0:35:10By tying the young trees together at the top,
0:35:10 > 0:35:14the boys are training the plants to grow into an arch shape.
0:35:14 > 0:35:18And as the hornbeam grows, the structure will get stronger.
0:35:19 > 0:35:22What I'm doing here is I am just trimming off the inside branches,
0:35:22 > 0:35:25just to accentuate that kind of tunnel feeling.
0:35:25 > 0:35:28But I don't want to do it too much, I want to keep it quite natural
0:35:28 > 0:35:31and feeling, you know, that these things have just sprouted out.
0:35:31 > 0:35:34To add another sensory element to the children's play area,
0:35:34 > 0:35:37Charlie has sourced some tubular bells.
0:35:37 > 0:35:40Their deep tones will provide endless delight to Rocco and Bruno
0:35:40 > 0:35:42and the neighbours, no doubt.
0:35:43 > 0:35:45I'll hand over the baton. You can...
0:35:45 > 0:35:48- BELLS CHIME - Oh!
0:35:48 > 0:35:49LAUGHTER
0:35:49 > 0:35:52- It escaped from me! - That's nice. Look at that.
0:35:52 > 0:35:54Shall we do a duet?
0:35:57 > 0:36:00- I love them!- Ooh!- I want some. - You just made that look easy.
0:36:00 > 0:36:02- Have a go. - If I could break out a tune,
0:36:02 > 0:36:06- that would pretty cool, wouldn't it? - Go on. You are a geet-arist.
0:36:06 > 0:36:09- Drop a beat and then I'm in. - Drop a beat? What does that mean?
0:36:09 > 0:36:12- I don't know.- Go on. Drop a beat then.- I don't know, I just say it.
0:36:16 > 0:36:20To further enhance the sights, smells and sounds in this part
0:36:20 > 0:36:25of the garden, Charlie is adding sensory planting around the bells.
0:36:25 > 0:36:28I have got some...
0:36:28 > 0:36:31- lovely phlomis. Feel that. - I do like phlomis.- So soft.
0:36:31 > 0:36:34- A big yellow one, isn't it, this one?- Yeah.
0:36:34 > 0:36:37- We've got herbs for smell.- Yeah, that does smell good.- More herbs.
0:36:37 > 0:36:39- So, thyme and mint.- Yep.
0:36:39 > 0:36:43- Beautiful.- And then, for bright colours, we've got the calendula.
0:36:43 > 0:36:45- Ooh.- You can eat the flowers.
0:36:45 > 0:36:47- Serious?- The petals. - What does it taste of?- Nothing.- Oh!
0:36:47 > 0:36:50- But it looks pretty. - It's just the idea...
0:36:50 > 0:36:52- And then, can you see those chives over there?- Yep.
0:36:52 > 0:36:55- Could you bring them over here, cos I'd like those here as well?- Oh!
0:36:55 > 0:36:57See? There you go.
0:36:57 > 0:37:01That'll teach you to come and talk to me and play with my bells.
0:37:05 > 0:37:07Harry is adding plants, too,
0:37:07 > 0:37:10but this time with a native British heritage.
0:37:10 > 0:37:12These primroses left to seed
0:37:12 > 0:37:14will create these lovely surprises around the garden.
0:37:14 > 0:37:17In time, they are going to drift over this mound
0:37:17 > 0:37:19and, you know, they'll dot about garden.
0:37:19 > 0:37:22And I think that's what's so nice about using wild plants.
0:37:28 > 0:37:32With the main features built, the team are on the home straight.
0:37:32 > 0:37:35The newly created slope is now being turfed.
0:37:39 > 0:37:42And, to make the play area safe for the young boys,
0:37:42 > 0:37:46David's adding a thick layer of bark chippings.
0:37:46 > 0:37:48And there's just one more important element
0:37:48 > 0:37:51for Charlie to add to the children's area.
0:37:51 > 0:37:55Rocco and Bruno's grandad has made them a mud kitchen
0:37:55 > 0:37:58and it is taking pride of place next to the climbing frame.
0:37:59 > 0:38:03As the final pot of herbs is placed next to the pizza oven,
0:38:03 > 0:38:07this family garden is complete and ready for its grand unveiling.
0:38:11 > 0:38:15In its previous guise, Lorna and Luciano's garden was full of
0:38:15 > 0:38:18level changes, trip hazards and sharp edges.
0:38:18 > 0:38:22Not exactly a suitable playground for two young children.
0:38:25 > 0:38:28Now, it's had a £6,500 makeover.
0:38:28 > 0:38:32And Charlie and the team have spent every penny
0:38:32 > 0:38:35to try and make this garden work for all the family.
0:38:36 > 0:38:39She spent £1,300 on play equipment
0:38:39 > 0:38:43and tubular bells to keep Rocco and Bruno occupied.
0:38:46 > 0:38:49The grass tunnel in the play area fits brilliantly
0:38:49 > 0:38:51with Charlie's curvaceous design
0:38:51 > 0:38:54and was a steal at £100.
0:38:57 > 0:39:01The pizza oven was an indulgence at over £2,000,
0:39:01 > 0:39:03but it's the one thing Luciano wanted.
0:39:06 > 0:39:10The plants really give this garden its Italian feel.
0:39:10 > 0:39:14Charlie spent a whopping £1,200 on them, but the impact is huge.
0:39:18 > 0:39:22And last, but not least, the bespoke water feature adds
0:39:22 > 0:39:26a touch of luxury, with a £900 price tag to match.
0:39:26 > 0:39:29But it provides a focal point and a talking point in the garden.
0:39:34 > 0:39:37Lorna and Luciano were prepared to spend big
0:39:37 > 0:39:41to get the Anglo-Italian child-friendly garden they wanted.
0:39:41 > 0:39:45- OK. Don't open them until I say. - Rocco, don't cheat.
0:39:45 > 0:39:48It's time to find out if Charlie's design has risen to the challenge.
0:39:48 > 0:39:51- Rocco, don't cheat. - Eyes closed, eyes closed.
0:39:51 > 0:39:52Oh, here they come.
0:39:52 > 0:39:55I wonder if Rocco is going to keep his eyes closed.
0:39:55 > 0:39:58I don't know if I would, actually. I think I would...
0:39:58 > 0:39:59One, two, three.
0:39:59 > 0:40:01Open your eyes.
0:40:01 > 0:40:04- Whoa!- E bellissimo!
0:40:04 > 0:40:07- Yes? Bellissimo, I think it's... - Oh, my god!- Yeah?- Yeah.
0:40:07 > 0:40:09- Shall we go down? - Do you want to go down then?
0:40:09 > 0:40:11Shall we go and have a look?
0:40:11 > 0:40:13THEY LAUGH
0:40:13 > 0:40:15God, he's gone straight on the mound.
0:40:15 > 0:40:16LAUGHTER
0:40:16 > 0:40:19- Well, it looks like he's really enjoying himself, anyway.- Yeah.
0:40:19 > 0:40:21- Wow!- So, this is all going to be scented,
0:40:21 > 0:40:24so you've got your wisteria that is scented.
0:40:24 > 0:40:26We have jasmine and we've got a climbing white rose.
0:40:26 > 0:40:29Very romantic, with a really, really sweet scent.
0:40:29 > 0:40:30Oh, that's beautiful.
0:40:30 > 0:40:32And then you've got your...
0:40:32 > 0:40:34- olive trees.- Olive trees. Wow!
0:40:34 > 0:40:36They are amazing, aren't they?
0:40:36 > 0:40:38- And we've put... - Oh, look at the pizza oven!
0:40:38 > 0:40:40LAUGHTER
0:40:40 > 0:40:42- I think that's going to get great use.- It definitely will.
0:40:42 > 0:40:45You can see how that area has been transformed now.
0:40:45 > 0:40:48- The wisteria looks beautiful as well.- Gorgeous.
0:40:48 > 0:40:49Come and hit the pipes.
0:40:51 > 0:40:53- LAUGHTER - What about the other ones?
0:40:53 > 0:40:55What about these ones?
0:40:55 > 0:40:57ALL TALK
0:40:57 > 0:40:59You know, I'm actually really surprised
0:40:59 > 0:41:02at how much of a dramatic change has happened today.
0:41:02 > 0:41:05- Yeah, cos it was quite mature, wasn't it?- Yeah.- And you kind of
0:41:05 > 0:41:08feel like there wasn't much to do. But, actually, taking away
0:41:08 > 0:41:10that stone wall at the front and curving up into the lawn
0:41:10 > 0:41:11has made a massive difference.
0:41:11 > 0:41:14I was really pleased when this wall came out,
0:41:14 > 0:41:17- because it seems to have made this patio so much bigger.- I know.
0:41:17 > 0:41:20- And so much safer. - So much safer for the kids.
0:41:20 > 0:41:22They can just run up that and that is their bit.
0:41:22 > 0:41:24No, it's absolutely amazing.
0:41:24 > 0:41:26I love the water, I love the sound of the water.
0:41:26 > 0:41:29I think that's what they definitely wanted, didn't they?
0:41:29 > 0:41:30I think when they saw that they loved it,
0:41:30 > 0:41:32so I think they're going to get a lot from that.
0:41:32 > 0:41:35- And the sound of water in the garden...- It'll be lovely.
0:41:35 > 0:41:37So, Luciano, is it as you expected?
0:41:37 > 0:41:40- It's...I think it's even more than what I expected.- Yeah?
0:41:40 > 0:41:44Especially all the little things there. The pizza oven looks amazing.
0:41:44 > 0:41:45Now we need a little bit of weather,
0:41:45 > 0:41:47- so we can have a pizza. - Yes! Soon. Soon.
0:41:47 > 0:41:49- We can grow our olives.- Yep.
0:41:49 > 0:41:50LAUGHTER
0:41:54 > 0:41:59£6,500 was a serious investment in their outdoor space.
0:41:59 > 0:42:02Do Lorna and Luciano think it was money well spent?
0:42:03 > 0:42:05- Oh, I love the water. - I love the water.
0:42:05 > 0:42:08The water feature is absolutely stunning. Really, really love that.
0:42:08 > 0:42:09I love the olive trees and the...
0:42:09 > 0:42:12And the tubular bells. Did you see the kids playing on those?
0:42:12 > 0:42:14I think we're going to spend time ourselves there
0:42:14 > 0:42:17- to play with them.- I know. - I thought we did all right.
0:42:17 > 0:42:19I thought the levels were going to be much more of an issue.
0:42:19 > 0:42:22I know. It doesn't look like much of a level at all,
0:42:22 > 0:42:24- now it's all been done.- No. - It all flows seamlessly.
0:42:25 > 0:42:27Before, it wasn't a family garden.
0:42:27 > 0:42:30Now, you can really see that it's ours.
0:42:30 > 0:42:32It's got things in there for the kids and a bit of Italy,
0:42:32 > 0:42:35with the olive trees and the pizza oven. It definitely says us.
0:42:35 > 0:42:39Obviously, there has been a good budget here, but it does show that,
0:42:39 > 0:42:41if you are on a low budget, simple things, like taking away a wall
0:42:41 > 0:42:44- and sculpting some land, or bringing in a bit of drainage pipe...- Yeah!
0:42:44 > 0:42:46..lobbing some soil over it...
0:42:46 > 0:42:48- You can actually make big differences to a garden.- Yeah.
0:42:48 > 0:42:50I think you're really smug.
0:42:50 > 0:42:52I don't think I've seen you this smug for a long time.
0:42:52 > 0:42:55Only when you get us to dig a big hole are you that smug!
0:42:57 > 0:43:00'I think the way Charlie's pulled it all together, with the curves,
0:43:00 > 0:43:03'it really feels like it has been designed, the garden,'
0:43:03 > 0:43:06much more than we could ever have done, really.
0:43:08 > 0:43:10It's amazing. I'm really, really pleased.
