0:00:02 > 0:00:04With her can-do attitude, love of simple gardens

0:00:04 > 0:00:06and decades of experience...

0:00:06 > 0:00:09- Hello!- ..Charlie Dimmock is one of Britain's best-loved gardeners.

0:00:09 > 0:00:12Looking good, boys!

0:00:12 > 0:00:15But the new kids on the gardening block are the Rich brothers.

0:00:15 > 0:00:18We want to be the brothers that change people's perceptions

0:00:18 > 0:00:19of gardens.

0:00:19 > 0:00:22Winners of multiple medals at the Chelsea Flower Show...

0:00:22 > 0:00:24- Oh, wow.- Oh, good turn. - It's amazing, isn't it?

0:00:24 > 0:00:29..the boys have become known for their dramatic outdoor spaces.

0:00:29 > 0:00:34Now these two different generations of gardening are going head-to-head.

0:00:34 > 0:00:38I know they've got a gold medal, but I can come up with a few ideas.

0:00:38 > 0:00:42They're meeting frustrated garden owners across the country...

0:00:42 > 0:00:45The photos made it look tiny. It is, isn't it?

0:00:45 > 0:00:48- I'm sure you've seen larger. - I don't know what to do with it.

0:00:48 > 0:00:51..and will each pitch them a design based on their needs...

0:00:51 > 0:00:55- Wow!- ..and budget. - It looks really exciting.

0:00:55 > 0:00:58- It doesn't look like it could be our garden.- The winner...- Ta-dah!

0:00:58 > 0:01:01THEY CHEER ..brings their design to life...

0:01:01 > 0:01:04- Hold on, hold on!- Sweet as a nut.

0:01:04 > 0:01:07..and the loser has to help them build it.

0:01:07 > 0:01:10Oh, I'm getting irritated now with the faffing around.

0:01:10 > 0:01:11This is what happens...

0:01:11 > 0:01:14- Does he ever get irritating? - All the time.

0:01:14 > 0:01:16..when difference styles collide...

0:01:16 > 0:01:18- Who chose these?- One, two, three!

0:01:18 > 0:01:20This looks like your design.

0:01:20 > 0:01:22Yeah!

0:01:22 > 0:01:25..to turn garden dreams into reality.

0:01:25 > 0:01:27- Wow!- Open your eyes.

0:01:27 > 0:01:30Wow. It's amazing.

0:01:30 > 0:01:32It's beautiful.

0:01:38 > 0:01:40So, whose garden will Charlie and the Rich brothers

0:01:40 > 0:01:42be battling over today?

0:01:42 > 0:01:44It's time to find out.

0:01:44 > 0:01:46- What we got then?- Right.

0:01:46 > 0:01:49Stan and Gloria have sent these in from Faversham,

0:01:49 > 0:01:51and they're a lovely couple

0:01:51 > 0:01:55that have lived in this beautiful flint cottage for 14 years.

0:01:55 > 0:01:58- Yeah.- It's very pretty, isn't it? - Mm.

0:01:58 > 0:02:00Stan and Gloria's family home

0:02:00 > 0:02:05is a barn that was converted into cottages 120 years ago.

0:02:05 > 0:02:08And it was a case of love at first sight.

0:02:08 > 0:02:11We walked down the drive and we just turned the corner

0:02:11 > 0:02:14and saw the house, and I just thought,

0:02:14 > 0:02:17"Yeah, I really love this. I could live here.

0:02:17 > 0:02:19"Yes. This is the one. This is the place."

0:02:19 > 0:02:22There's just something magical about it.

0:02:22 > 0:02:26And they cherish their front garden just as much as their home.

0:02:26 > 0:02:30It was a very sort of natural garden, and, you know,

0:02:30 > 0:02:32we'd like nothing more on a summer's evening

0:02:32 > 0:02:35sitting outside with a glass of wine.

0:02:36 > 0:02:39But two years ago, disaster struck.

0:02:39 > 0:02:42My goodness. Look at that.

0:02:42 > 0:02:44After a period of heavy rain,

0:02:44 > 0:02:49a 200-year-old retaining wall on the border of their property collapsed.

0:02:49 > 0:02:51A landslide followed,

0:02:51 > 0:02:55sweeping their cherished garden into the woods below.

0:02:55 > 0:02:58Took out the whole front garden and the whole driveway,

0:02:58 > 0:03:01and that took about ten mature trees with it as well.

0:03:01 > 0:03:05We realised that we had had quite a...

0:03:05 > 0:03:07An extensive...

0:03:07 > 0:03:09- Well, a catastrophic sort of collapse.- Yeah.

0:03:09 > 0:03:13It changed everything.

0:03:13 > 0:03:16Almost all of Gloria's beloved plants

0:03:16 > 0:03:20and much-loved weeping willow were gone.

0:03:20 > 0:03:21Over the last two years,

0:03:21 > 0:03:26the wall has been rebuilt and the driveway replaced.

0:03:26 > 0:03:28But with the exception of a few shrubs,

0:03:28 > 0:03:32the front garden is now just a barren wasteland.

0:03:32 > 0:03:35I think the garden looks stark and raw now.

0:03:35 > 0:03:37There's too much tarmac.

0:03:37 > 0:03:40I've lost heart, I think. I think that's the thing.

0:03:45 > 0:03:48Gloria and Stan are now desperate to bring their garden

0:03:48 > 0:03:51back to its former glory.

0:03:51 > 0:03:54My dream would be to have that lovely feeling

0:03:54 > 0:03:57when you sort of come round the corner and see the house.

0:03:57 > 0:03:59It is such a nice spot,

0:03:59 > 0:04:04and to be able to use it again would be very special.

0:04:04 > 0:04:06But with much of the couple's time and money

0:04:06 > 0:04:08going into the building work,

0:04:08 > 0:04:11there's little left over for the garden.

0:04:11 > 0:04:16The budget that we have for this is £1,500.

0:04:16 > 0:04:19But the old front garden will be a hard act to follow,

0:04:19 > 0:04:24so pleasing Gloria and Stan won't be easy.

0:04:24 > 0:04:25Considering the history of this garden,

0:04:25 > 0:04:28I'm pretty sure they're not going to be wanting any water features,

0:04:28 > 0:04:31- are they, Charlie? - Is that pointed at me?

0:04:31 > 0:04:33- Maybe.- Hey? - THEY LAUGH

0:04:37 > 0:04:41This is a seriously demanding project,

0:04:41 > 0:04:45and Charlie and the boys will now compete for the chance

0:04:45 > 0:04:50to restore Gloria and Stan's garden to its former glory.

0:04:50 > 0:04:51So, they're heading to Kent

0:04:51 > 0:04:54to see the house and garden in the flesh.

0:04:54 > 0:04:57They're on the lookout for clues and ideas,

0:04:57 > 0:05:00something special that will give them an edge.

0:05:00 > 0:05:03- Ah.- Yes, this is...- Wow.

0:05:03 > 0:05:05You can see where the builders have been.

0:05:05 > 0:05:07- Yeah, you definitely see... - Yeah, right there.

0:05:07 > 0:05:11- It looks like it was quite a pretty garden at one point.- Yeah.- Cute.

0:05:11 > 0:05:14- And it's a bit of a tricky space. There's no boundaries.- Yeah.

0:05:14 > 0:05:16I think just probably best to keep it natural

0:05:16 > 0:05:19- and kind of work with nature. - Stop stealing my ideas, you!

0:05:19 > 0:05:21- Let's go and find them, shall we? - Yeah.

0:05:24 > 0:05:27Charlie wants to find out from Gloria and Stan

0:05:27 > 0:05:29what their old garden was like.

0:05:29 > 0:05:31So, you just walked out and...

0:05:31 > 0:05:33- Yes, it's gone.- ..it was gone.

0:05:33 > 0:05:36- Were you like, "Oh!"- Yeah. - We were. We couldn't believe it.

0:05:36 > 0:05:38Well, it was a bit of a shock.

0:05:38 > 0:05:40You know, just didn't realise it had gone.

0:05:42 > 0:05:45But the boys want to see inside the house

0:05:45 > 0:05:48to see whether there's anything particular about the couple's taste

0:05:48 > 0:05:51that might give them some clues.

0:05:51 > 0:05:54- Oh, wow. Oh, lovely and cosy in this room, isn't it?- Yeah.

0:05:54 > 0:05:56- Some lovely details. Look at the beams.- Yeah.

0:05:56 > 0:05:59- Really cottage-y, isn't it? - It's super cottage-y.

0:05:59 > 0:06:02The boys are famous for their contemporary designs,

0:06:02 > 0:06:04but there's nothing modern about this house.

0:06:04 > 0:06:07Gloria and Stan love their period details.

0:06:07 > 0:06:10Then they've got lovely detail on the window, that lead diamond shape.

0:06:10 > 0:06:12Yeah, it's on the cupboards over there as well.

0:06:12 > 0:06:15Yeah, so maybe that's a nice thing to tie back in with the garden.

0:06:15 > 0:06:18So, to get it back looking beautiful...

0:06:18 > 0:06:21- Would mean an awful lot.- Mm. - It would mean a lot.- Yeah.

0:06:21 > 0:06:26Inside, the boys have spotted another reason why the front garden

0:06:26 > 0:06:28is so important to Gloria and Stan.

0:06:28 > 0:06:29Look outside. It's beautiful.

0:06:29 > 0:06:32Oh, it's a gorgeous view out the window, isn't it? Really nice.

0:06:32 > 0:06:34I don't want to cut those views out, so...

0:06:34 > 0:06:36- Important to keep them.- Yeah.

0:06:40 > 0:06:42And what do you want from the garden?

0:06:42 > 0:06:45Something low-maintenance, enhance nature,

0:06:45 > 0:06:47that's compatible with the cottage.

0:06:47 > 0:06:50That sort of wow factor where a garden kind of framed the house,

0:06:50 > 0:06:52if you know what I mean.

0:06:52 > 0:06:54- Easy then.- Spot on.- Good. - THEY LAUGH

0:06:54 > 0:06:56Do you think you could do that, Charlie?

0:06:56 > 0:07:00- Oh, the boys are good. - THEY LAUGH

0:07:01 > 0:07:02It's all smiles now,

0:07:02 > 0:07:07but restoring this big front garden to its former beauty for just £1,500

0:07:07 > 0:07:09won't be easy.

0:07:09 > 0:07:12And after two years of building hell,

0:07:12 > 0:07:16Gloria and Stan will be very anxious about the results.

0:07:19 > 0:07:22So, Charlie and the Rich brothers get straight to work.

0:07:26 > 0:07:29They each have to come up with a winning design

0:07:29 > 0:07:32and then present it to Gloria and Stan,

0:07:32 > 0:07:34who will choose which one gets built.

0:07:34 > 0:07:36But the loser doesn't get off lightly,

0:07:36 > 0:07:39as they have to help the winner build the garden.

0:07:43 > 0:07:46Charlie seemed to be on the couple's wavelength,

0:07:46 > 0:07:49and her wealth of experience could give her an edge...

0:07:49 > 0:07:52especially as this kind of traditional garden

0:07:52 > 0:07:55is new territory for the boys.

0:07:55 > 0:07:58It's time to see if they've done their homework

0:07:58 > 0:08:00and can upset the odds.

0:08:00 > 0:08:02So, this is your patio as it is.

0:08:02 > 0:08:05- At the moment, you go up the steps here, don't you?- Yeah.

0:08:05 > 0:08:08- So, I'm basically taking those steps away...- Yeah.

0:08:08 > 0:08:09..enhancing the planting you've got

0:08:09 > 0:08:14and then you will just slope up onto the grass,

0:08:14 > 0:08:16rather than steps.

0:08:16 > 0:08:18- Oh, right.- So, we'll grade it up. - Yeah.

0:08:18 > 0:08:22And this is a Gothic seat, almost like a throne.

0:08:22 > 0:08:25It's a Gothic chair for one person.

0:08:26 > 0:08:29The design is very natural, very organic shapes,

0:08:29 > 0:08:32and it's split into three areas.

0:08:32 > 0:08:34Here we've got a main seating area

0:08:34 > 0:08:37which is surrounded by beautiful cottage-style perennial planting,

0:08:37 > 0:08:39and then around the outside we've got this longer grass,

0:08:39 > 0:08:41more of a natural meadow.

0:08:42 > 0:08:46Both sides have remembered the couple love sitting

0:08:46 > 0:08:48in their old front garden,

0:08:48 > 0:08:51but Charlie has only put in a seat for one.

0:08:52 > 0:08:54Where's Stan going to go?

0:08:56 > 0:09:00Improving the view of the garage and tarmac drive

0:09:00 > 0:09:01was the next challenge.

0:09:01 > 0:09:04So, one of the main features in the garden

0:09:04 > 0:09:06is this living willow fence.

0:09:06 > 0:09:08It really blocks off the tarmac that you've got around...

0:09:08 > 0:09:10- Yes, it softens it all. - Yes, exactly. So...

0:09:10 > 0:09:11It's a natural screen.

0:09:13 > 0:09:15So, I've got across here, this is a feature

0:09:15 > 0:09:20and it's a chestnut post and rail fence with a gate,

0:09:20 > 0:09:22a hobbit gate.

0:09:22 > 0:09:26Gloria and Stan lost ten trees in the landslide,

0:09:26 > 0:09:29so both designers are keen to put some back.

0:09:29 > 0:09:32We really wanted to capture this native British woodland feel,

0:09:32 > 0:09:35and you know, choosing these small trees and shrubs is really

0:09:35 > 0:09:37going to give you this long season

0:09:37 > 0:09:41and it's going to have blossom, autumn interest.

0:09:41 > 0:09:44It's going to attract birds and wildlife.

0:09:44 > 0:09:50I've got several different trees that are very beautiful,

0:09:50 > 0:09:53so I've got a multi-stemmed birch here

0:09:53 > 0:09:56so you'll get, with the sun setting over there,

0:09:56 > 0:09:58you'll get the bark highlighted in the evening sun.

0:09:58 > 0:10:00It looks beautiful.

0:10:00 > 0:10:04Gloria and Stan are understandably nervous

0:10:04 > 0:10:05and have some questions.

0:10:05 > 0:10:07What height do the trees grow to?

0:10:07 > 0:10:09- Well, they're all small ones... - Oh, right. OK.- Yeah.

0:10:09 > 0:10:11..cos I didn't want to lose the light.

0:10:14 > 0:10:15How high are the...?

0:10:15 > 0:10:17- The fence?- The fencing, yeah.

0:10:17 > 0:10:20Probably be about no bigger than me. I'm not the biggest man, but...

0:10:20 > 0:10:22Something that's not going to be imposing.

0:10:22 > 0:10:25Their time is up.

0:10:25 > 0:10:27It's now down to Gloria and Stan.

0:10:27 > 0:10:30- I do like Charlie's planting.- Yeah.

0:10:30 > 0:10:33I think the way she explained the gate thing there,

0:10:33 > 0:10:36it's a sort of quite a natural beauty.

0:10:36 > 0:10:39You lead through the gate up to actual tarmac.

0:10:39 > 0:10:41Yeah. And it is hidden.

0:10:41 > 0:10:43With the boys' one, it's a complete change.

0:10:43 > 0:10:45I like the idea of seating,

0:10:45 > 0:10:50somewhere to sit and make more use of the garden.

0:10:50 > 0:10:53- But I particularly like this. - The willow.

0:10:53 > 0:10:54- Yeah.- Yeah.

0:10:54 > 0:10:58- It's difficult.- It is. It's very difficult, isn't it?

0:10:58 > 0:11:02After two years of disappointment, not surprisingly,

0:11:02 > 0:11:05Gloria and Stan are having trouble deciding.

0:11:05 > 0:11:08- I mean, I like both of them.- Well...

0:11:08 > 0:11:10We're not going to argue about it.

0:11:10 > 0:11:13..it's going to have to be up to you.

0:11:13 > 0:11:18Well, only one design can win, so who's it going to be?

0:11:18 > 0:11:21Will they go for Charlie's sloping woodland,

0:11:21 > 0:11:23hobbit gate and Gothic seat

0:11:23 > 0:11:26or the boys' curved path and seating area,

0:11:26 > 0:11:29meadow grass and willow screen?

0:11:31 > 0:11:35Well, it's been a very, very difficult decision.

0:11:35 > 0:11:36I'm sorry we've taken so long.

0:11:36 > 0:11:38No problem.

0:11:38 > 0:11:41But in the end, we've decided to go with...

0:11:43 > 0:11:45SHE SINGS FANFARE

0:11:45 > 0:11:48CHEERING

0:11:48 > 0:11:49- Woo!- Great decision.

0:11:49 > 0:11:52- So, thank you both very much. - Oh, it's lovely. Thank you.- Yeah.

0:11:52 > 0:11:53Absolutely thrilled.

0:11:53 > 0:11:55- Oh, good.- Thank you.

0:11:55 > 0:11:57I like the living hedge,

0:11:57 > 0:11:59- cos I thought that was very natural for the...- Yes, yeah.

0:11:59 > 0:12:00For the garden, yeah.

0:12:00 > 0:12:03It would be nice to sit here with a glass of wine in the summer

0:12:03 > 0:12:06- and look over onto the trees in the hills over there...- Yes.

0:12:06 > 0:12:09- ..so, yes.- We'll hold you to that.

0:12:09 > 0:12:11You're very welcome to come back.

0:12:13 > 0:12:16So, against the odds, the Rich brothers have won.

0:12:16 > 0:12:20But there's no doubt they'll need Charlie's help with this one.

0:12:20 > 0:12:23They might be in charge, but with such a big garden

0:12:23 > 0:12:27and small budget, her wealth of experience could be crucial.

0:12:36 > 0:12:39It's the first day of the build.

0:12:39 > 0:12:42With the boys away making final touches to the design,

0:12:42 > 0:12:46project manager Kate and landscapist Adam and Scott

0:12:46 > 0:12:48are preparing the site.

0:12:51 > 0:12:53With the ground in a terrible state,

0:12:53 > 0:12:56almost all of the plot needs to be dug up,

0:12:56 > 0:12:58so to save time, Kate has hired Scott

0:12:58 > 0:13:01a new toy for the day.

0:13:01 > 0:13:06So, we're using the digger to grade our soil to make it nice and level.

0:13:06 > 0:13:12It may use up £250 of our £1,500 budget,

0:13:12 > 0:13:15but it would take an army days to do the same job,

0:13:15 > 0:13:16so it's worth it.

0:13:19 > 0:13:22And actually it's quite good soil, so I'm quite pleased about that.

0:13:24 > 0:13:26But the guys have to be careful.

0:13:26 > 0:13:30Two years of building has changed the plot completely,

0:13:30 > 0:13:33and there are unexpected surprises hidden underground.

0:13:33 > 0:13:35Hang on.

0:13:37 > 0:13:41- That is the old oil pipe...- Right.

0:13:41 > 0:13:44..I reckon, so that would've been the power for the old pump.

0:13:44 > 0:13:46Yeah.

0:13:46 > 0:13:50- I've got to be really careful when we come through here.- Yeah.

0:13:51 > 0:13:55One of the selling points of the Rich brothers' design

0:13:55 > 0:13:57was a new path and seating area,

0:13:57 > 0:14:00and Scott and Adam have to figure out

0:14:00 > 0:14:02where the circle goes.

0:14:02 > 0:14:05To create the circle, you put a peg at the centre point

0:14:05 > 0:14:08and work out how big you want your arch.

0:14:08 > 0:14:11And then just follow our line around with our string line

0:14:11 > 0:14:13from the centre point.

0:14:13 > 0:14:14The Rich brothers want the centre point

0:14:14 > 0:14:16to be the place where Gloria and Stan

0:14:16 > 0:14:19will have the best view.

0:14:19 > 0:14:21But the circle needs to be just big enough

0:14:21 > 0:14:23for a table and chairs.

0:14:24 > 0:14:28Once it's marked out, the soil is levelled

0:14:28 > 0:14:31and the base layer of aggregate can start going down.

0:14:41 > 0:14:43Good work. We're nearly there now.

0:14:44 > 0:14:47One of the issues with Stan and Gloria's plot

0:14:47 > 0:14:50is that the narrow drive is on a steep slope,

0:14:50 > 0:14:55so every time there's a delivery, everyone has to stop,

0:14:55 > 0:14:59walk up the drive and carry it back to the site.

0:14:59 > 0:15:02But now the bulk of the plants are here,

0:15:02 > 0:15:04Kate has spotted a problem.

0:15:04 > 0:15:09An area for planting on the boys' design is at the moment

0:15:09 > 0:15:10covered in tarmac.

0:15:12 > 0:15:14David is on his way, but she needs his help now

0:15:14 > 0:15:16to get to the bottom of it.

0:15:16 > 0:15:19- Hi, David. It's Kate. - 'Hey, Kate. How are you?'

0:15:19 > 0:15:22Yeah, pretty good.

0:15:22 > 0:15:25Do you remember on your design they've got the garage

0:15:25 > 0:15:27and quite a lot of tarmac,

0:15:27 > 0:15:31and originally you had some planting in that area?

0:15:31 > 0:15:34'Yes, yeah. I do. You don't want to dig in there, do you?'

0:15:34 > 0:15:35We don't want to do that, no.

0:15:35 > 0:15:38Maybe we could get three planters

0:15:38 > 0:15:40and then get some plants to go in those planters.

0:15:40 > 0:15:43'It'd look lovely. It would blend in with everything, wouldn't it?'

0:15:43 > 0:15:45Yeah, I think so. Definitely.

0:15:45 > 0:15:47'Any natural material I think would look really nice.'

0:15:47 > 0:15:52That's all very well, assuming we have the money for planters.

0:15:54 > 0:15:56That's the last of them, I think.

0:16:01 > 0:16:05With so much still to do, the team could do with some support.

0:16:05 > 0:16:09Charlie's here, but where are the boys?

0:16:09 > 0:16:11It is their design, after all.

0:16:12 > 0:16:15There's David, but where's Harry?

0:16:15 > 0:16:18- Oh!- And what time do you call this?

0:16:18 > 0:16:21- Where is your other half? - You're here!- Oh, yeah. Very funny.

0:16:21 > 0:16:24- Where's Harry?- The not-so-better half, he's ill, unfortunately.

0:16:24 > 0:16:27- Oh, no.- Bit of an upset belly, but don't worry.

0:16:27 > 0:16:30- I'll let you in on a secret here. I pretty much did this design.- OK.

0:16:30 > 0:16:32Harry just coloured in the plants. So, it's fine.

0:16:32 > 0:16:35- Can I quote you on that one, huh? - No.

0:16:35 > 0:16:37I think he's just seen the weather forecast.

0:16:37 > 0:16:39The BBC say it's going to start raining about midday.

0:16:39 > 0:16:42- Let's get going. - Coats and get going, yeah.

0:16:43 > 0:16:48With Harry out, it's not just a question of reduced manpower.

0:16:48 > 0:16:53Without his brother, the pressure is on David to run the show.

0:16:53 > 0:16:56He's going to really need Charlie's help to carry it off.

0:16:56 > 0:16:58We're really looking forward to this garden

0:16:58 > 0:17:00mainly because of those living willow structures.

0:17:00 > 0:17:02Oh, you like playing with the willow withies.

0:17:02 > 0:17:05- It's like gardening Meccano or something, isn't it?- Yeah.

0:17:05 > 0:17:06It's going to be good fun.

0:17:06 > 0:17:09- Right, so, I mean, the key areas. We've got the willow.- Yes.

0:17:09 > 0:17:11Hard standing gravel area.

0:17:11 > 0:17:13That's going to be key to get in position,

0:17:13 > 0:17:15- and all the soft landscaping can work around that.- All right.

0:17:15 > 0:17:18And Charlie has also spotted the area on the design

0:17:18 > 0:17:20that was worrying Kate.

0:17:20 > 0:17:21Now, this bit here then.

0:17:21 > 0:17:23Yeah, so, this bit on the original design

0:17:23 > 0:17:25was to dig in so we can put some nice natural screening

0:17:25 > 0:17:28for the garage, but there's a lot of tarmac,

0:17:28 > 0:17:31there's a lot of drains and there's a retaining wall.

0:17:31 > 0:17:34- That'd be a no then.- Yes. - How are going to cover this up?

0:17:34 > 0:17:37So, we're going to have to try and find something to up-cycle

0:17:37 > 0:17:38and make into planters.

0:17:38 > 0:17:41- Uh-huh.- There's loads of things that Gloria and Stan like,

0:17:41 > 0:17:43so there's a few things to keep and work around.

0:17:43 > 0:17:45And maybe we can transplant them somewhere else,

0:17:45 > 0:17:47move them in the garden, maybe.

0:17:47 > 0:17:50I think for me, if I get the plants out

0:17:50 > 0:17:51that we want to save for Gloria and Stan

0:17:51 > 0:17:55and then move some of the other ones into key places...

0:17:55 > 0:17:57And I will work on the hard standing here

0:17:57 > 0:17:59- for the path and the gravel area. - OK.

0:17:59 > 0:18:00Oh. It's good hard work.

0:18:00 > 0:18:02- Cos that's going to really set up the design, isn't it?- Yes.

0:18:02 > 0:18:05- Right.- Think that's everything.

0:18:13 > 0:18:18Whilst David takes control of the hard landscaping,

0:18:18 > 0:18:23Charlie is performing surgery on Gloria's flowerbeds.

0:18:23 > 0:18:26In the boys' design, there's no room for the existing shrubs,

0:18:26 > 0:18:29so Charlie has found a new place for them

0:18:29 > 0:18:30in a different part of the property.

0:18:32 > 0:18:36Whenever you're transplanting a mature shrub like this,

0:18:36 > 0:18:39get as much root ball as you possibly can,

0:18:39 > 0:18:42prepare the hole really well

0:18:42 > 0:18:47and always cut the shrub back by a good two thirds.

0:18:50 > 0:18:54Up on the top deck, the path is taking shape.

0:18:54 > 0:18:56This hardcore is great as a base

0:18:56 > 0:18:58because there's really good variation size of stone.

0:18:58 > 0:19:00So, as you can see, we've got some big ones

0:19:00 > 0:19:02and then we've got the smaller ones down to the dust,

0:19:02 > 0:19:05and this really helps it bind down as a solid surface.

0:19:05 > 0:19:07So, what you don't really want to be using

0:19:07 > 0:19:09is things like pea shingle or just normal gravel,

0:19:09 > 0:19:12cos that will always stay loose.

0:19:12 > 0:19:14Once the aggregate is down,

0:19:14 > 0:19:18a layer of gravel crumb will be added on top.

0:19:18 > 0:19:21The challenge with the path is to make it rustic enough

0:19:21 > 0:19:24to fit with the style of the garden without the high-maintenance issues

0:19:24 > 0:19:28of an informal gravel or shingle path.

0:19:28 > 0:19:30Time will tell whether David can pull it off.

0:19:38 > 0:19:41Meanwhile, Charlie is on an impossible mission.

0:19:41 > 0:19:44David has asked her to bring life to the bare garage walls.

0:19:44 > 0:19:47Is there any money in the budget for containers?

0:19:47 > 0:19:49- Honest answer?- Mm.- No.

0:19:49 > 0:19:53- How about trellis?- No.

0:19:53 > 0:19:54OK. Well, that's really not

0:19:54 > 0:19:56the answers I wanted there, Kate, really.

0:19:56 > 0:19:58I was thinking a couple of yeses would be handy.

0:19:58 > 0:20:01I'd love to say, "Yes. Just go and get what you want.

0:20:01 > 0:20:03"We've got loads of money," but we haven't.

0:20:03 > 0:20:06- Make do and mend.- OK.

0:20:06 > 0:20:08I'm sure you can come up with something fantastic.

0:20:08 > 0:20:10- Oh, OK.- OK?

0:20:10 > 0:20:12- Bye!- That's going to challenge me a little.

0:20:18 > 0:20:22In the main part of the garden, the aggregate's pressed and ready,

0:20:22 > 0:20:25but there's no sign of the top layer of gravel,

0:20:25 > 0:20:29so David is turning his attention to the front of the plot.

0:20:29 > 0:20:31Quite heavy, these turfs, aren't they?

0:20:31 > 0:20:32Right.

0:20:32 > 0:20:34Before the landslide,

0:20:34 > 0:20:37Gloria and Stan's front garden had a magical feel to it

0:20:37 > 0:20:39and David is planning to bring it back

0:20:39 > 0:20:42with a new wild flower meadow.

0:20:42 > 0:20:44So, David, why have you used meadow turf in this design?

0:20:44 > 0:20:47I'm just intrigued to know why you've chosen this.

0:20:47 > 0:20:48Ah, two genius reasons.

0:20:48 > 0:20:50- So, one of them is it's just really natural.- Yeah.

0:20:50 > 0:20:52And the other one is it's really healthy for the budget.

0:20:52 > 0:20:55- It's a lot cheaper than planting. - Yeah.

0:20:55 > 0:20:56And what's so nice about this stuff

0:20:56 > 0:20:58- is that you can tailor it to your own needs.- Right.

0:20:58 > 0:21:00So, lots of companies do different mixes,

0:21:00 > 0:21:02which is really cool.

0:21:02 > 0:21:06This turf is a 60/40 grass to plants mix.

0:21:06 > 0:21:08It may not look like much now,

0:21:08 > 0:21:10but in just a few months, this area of the garden

0:21:10 > 0:21:13will be alive with wild flowers.

0:21:13 > 0:21:17- I think that looks good to me. - Little stamp in.

0:21:17 > 0:21:19A little roll out and a little push in

0:21:19 > 0:21:20and that's good to go.

0:21:22 > 0:21:24So, what have you got hidden around here, Stan?

0:21:24 > 0:21:25We've got some...

0:21:25 > 0:21:29Meanwhile, in the back garden, Stan's got a surprise for Charlie.

0:21:31 > 0:21:34- They are quite heavy, aren't they? - Yes.

0:21:34 > 0:21:36- They are not falling apart. - Need to carry them.

0:21:36 > 0:21:39Yeah. Off we go. Slowly.

0:21:39 > 0:21:43Stan has three of these old wooden troughs

0:21:43 > 0:21:45and they're all in good condition.

0:21:45 > 0:21:47They might just be what Charlie is looking for.

0:21:47 > 0:21:49Somewhere around here looks good, Stan.

0:21:49 > 0:21:53Yeah, fine. OK. Just...be nice to put it down.

0:21:53 > 0:21:54There you go.

0:21:54 > 0:21:55Now, you better leave,

0:21:55 > 0:21:57because I'm going to be very brutal to it now.

0:21:57 > 0:22:00- Oh, no. - THEY LAUGH

0:22:00 > 0:22:03But she's going to need landscaper Adam's help.

0:22:03 > 0:22:05- Adam.- Yes?

0:22:05 > 0:22:07Now, I know you know this is a planter...

0:22:07 > 0:22:10- Indeed.- ..but it's not quite the type of planter I want.

0:22:10 > 0:22:12- Right.- OK?

0:22:12 > 0:22:15- You're getting me worried now. - Right. It's a bit too narrow.- OK.

0:22:15 > 0:22:17- So, I reckon a metre by a metre. - Yeah.

0:22:17 > 0:22:19- Is it just brute force and ignorance?- Yeah.

0:22:19 > 0:22:21they've been nailed together,

0:22:21 > 0:22:24- so I reckon give it a good whack with a hammer.- A big, good whack.

0:22:27 > 0:22:30- That was easy. Next. - We like this job.

0:22:30 > 0:22:33I'll swap ends. I'll hold it.

0:22:38 > 0:22:40Careful. Not too much enthusiasm, Charlie.

0:22:40 > 0:22:43Don't forget you're going to re-use these.

0:22:43 > 0:22:46The idea is that the timber from the troughs

0:22:46 > 0:22:48can be recycled into new planters,

0:22:48 > 0:22:51but at this rate, they may not be usable.

0:22:53 > 0:22:55- There we go. - That's one way to do it.

0:23:05 > 0:23:09The challenge with this garden is to restore it to its former glory

0:23:09 > 0:23:12after it was catastrophically destroyed two years ago,

0:23:12 > 0:23:17but even the most devastated gardens have amazing powers of recuperation.

0:23:24 > 0:23:29This is the Salutation Garden on the Kent coast.

0:23:29 > 0:23:32It may look spectacular now,

0:23:32 > 0:23:34but just three years ago, this idyllic space

0:23:34 > 0:23:37was almost wiped out by a title surge

0:23:37 > 0:23:38down the English Channel.

0:23:38 > 0:23:41We had about 12 hours notice,

0:23:41 > 0:23:45so very little time to protect anything other than the house.

0:23:45 > 0:23:48And only the next day could we count the cost.

0:23:48 > 0:23:50When the tide retreated,

0:23:50 > 0:23:53the whole site was left with sea water damage in the garden,

0:23:53 > 0:23:55but it wasn't over yet.

0:23:55 > 0:23:59The flood was followed by the wettest winter

0:23:59 > 0:24:00that we had recorded.

0:24:00 > 0:24:03There was irreparable damage.

0:24:03 > 0:24:06It uprooted trees, it relocated herbaceous plants.

0:24:06 > 0:24:10It pulled out probably hundreds of tonnes of soil.

0:24:10 > 0:24:13It's incredible that water is far more powerful

0:24:13 > 0:24:16than I think anyone ever gives it credit for.

0:24:16 > 0:24:20Around 15,000 plants were destroyed.

0:24:20 > 0:24:22It took months for it to properly sink in -

0:24:22 > 0:24:25the emotional loss from the plants.

0:24:25 > 0:24:28I think when you face a garden that's been devastated,

0:24:28 > 0:24:31it's important not to rush too quickly,

0:24:31 > 0:24:34actually, into making mistakes.

0:24:34 > 0:24:37Steve and his team took stock of what had happened

0:24:37 > 0:24:40and tried to look at it positively.

0:24:40 > 0:24:43There were lots of bits of the garden, actually,

0:24:43 > 0:24:46that we were living with because I could rely on those bits

0:24:46 > 0:24:47to perform every year.

0:24:47 > 0:24:52All of a sudden, we're faced with not a blank canvas,

0:24:52 > 0:24:55but half of the planting missing from the main borders.

0:24:55 > 0:25:00It was an opportunity to reinvent and build on old ideas.

0:25:03 > 0:25:05But when they started to replant,

0:25:05 > 0:25:09the saltwater had done more than just uproot the garden.

0:25:09 > 0:25:12The entire ecology of the soil is upset,

0:25:12 > 0:25:14and that's the place to start.

0:25:14 > 0:25:16Lots of hours digging

0:25:16 > 0:25:21incorporating lots of bulky organic material, manure.

0:25:21 > 0:25:24That was the key to begin with for us.

0:25:24 > 0:25:27And after lots of hard work and perseverance,

0:25:27 > 0:25:30Steve and his team continued to rebuild the grounds,

0:25:30 > 0:25:33making it the charming garden it is today.

0:25:37 > 0:25:39In Gloria and Stan's garden,

0:25:39 > 0:25:43the retaining wall that collapsed two years ago has been rebuilt,

0:25:43 > 0:25:47so whilst Adam works on her new planters,

0:25:47 > 0:25:50the couple have asked Charlie to give them some advice

0:25:50 > 0:25:51on what to do with it.

0:25:51 > 0:25:54My goodness. That's a wall and a half, isn't it?

0:25:54 > 0:25:57But this must be a fabulous sun trap.

0:25:57 > 0:25:58Yeah, it does catch the sun.

0:25:58 > 0:26:02Gloria and Stan's plot is on a giant slope,

0:26:02 > 0:26:06and on one side, the new wall is more than ten-foot high.

0:26:06 > 0:26:09This will be a nice warm wall and very, very protected,

0:26:09 > 0:26:13so things like Mediterranean plants, you know, like grapevines,

0:26:13 > 0:26:14- kiwi fruit.- Yeah.

0:26:14 > 0:26:17I mean, it would also be a really great spot

0:26:17 > 0:26:18for a little propagator.

0:26:18 > 0:26:21- Like a little lean-to greenhouse. - Yeah, yeah.- Yeah.

0:26:21 > 0:26:24- And it would be a great place to sit.- I think that sounds excellent.

0:26:24 > 0:26:26So, what we're going to need, Charlie,

0:26:26 > 0:26:29is for you to come back next year and do all this, sort it out.

0:26:29 > 0:26:31- THEY LAUGH - We'll see on that one!

0:26:31 > 0:26:33I've got enough to do up there!

0:26:35 > 0:26:36Upstairs in the front garden,

0:26:36 > 0:26:39there's still no sign of the top layer of gravel,

0:26:39 > 0:26:40so David is cracking on.

0:26:42 > 0:26:44Right. That's the first one.

0:26:44 > 0:26:47- Right. Looking good. Right.- Your turn.- Let's have a go.

0:26:47 > 0:26:49Gloria and Stan were unhappy

0:26:49 > 0:26:52with their view of the new tarmac drive,

0:26:52 > 0:26:54so in keeping with the house,

0:26:54 > 0:26:56the boys are proposing a living fence

0:26:56 > 0:26:58made from willow saplings.

0:27:00 > 0:27:02- Pretty solid.- Lovely, lovely.

0:27:04 > 0:27:07The idea is that the willow roots down into the earth

0:27:07 > 0:27:12like a normal tree, and because it's flexible, it can be interwoven.

0:27:12 > 0:27:14- Watch out.- Ah!

0:27:14 > 0:27:19They're also good for going, "Go faster! Go faster!"

0:27:19 > 0:27:22- Slave driver over there. - Place me some more plants!

0:27:22 > 0:27:24- More plants. Right.- Hurry up.

0:27:24 > 0:27:27- Right.- They are great, these, aren't they?- They are, yes.

0:27:27 > 0:27:31- Getting whipped into shape now.- Hey! They're fun.

0:27:32 > 0:27:37Meanwhile, fresh from the workshop, Adam has got a present for Charlie.

0:27:37 > 0:27:39Charlie, what do you reckon?

0:27:39 > 0:27:41Oh, not bad.

0:27:41 > 0:27:43Not bad. Is it square?

0:27:43 > 0:27:45- Should be. - SHE LAUGHS

0:27:45 > 0:27:47- I was teasing you! Teasing you. - As best I can with the old timber.

0:27:47 > 0:27:51- Oh, that's good. That's quite chunky, isn't it?- Yeah.

0:27:51 > 0:27:54David and Scott have planted the willow

0:27:54 > 0:27:58at ten-centimetre intervals and in a crisscross pattern.

0:27:58 > 0:28:00They are then fastened with another piece of willow

0:28:00 > 0:28:02and then interwoven at the top.

0:28:05 > 0:28:08Two more reasons why we've chosen these living willow screens

0:28:08 > 0:28:10is because one, they're really, really natural,

0:28:10 > 0:28:12so they blend in really well with the natural landscape

0:28:12 > 0:28:16and the garden, but also to link with the leaded diamond fashion

0:28:16 > 0:28:18on the window that you can see there.

0:28:18 > 0:28:20And that just really helps link house and garden.

0:28:20 > 0:28:25Come early May, this willow will start to leaf and fill the spaces.

0:28:25 > 0:28:28Been through the rain, but the rain does not bother me.

0:28:28 > 0:28:31Oh.

0:28:31 > 0:28:34- That doesn't bother me. It's OK. - HE LAUGHS

0:28:34 > 0:28:36The willow fence will be a new feature

0:28:36 > 0:28:39to help mask the big tarmac driveway,

0:28:39 > 0:28:42but one thing Gloria and Stan loved about their old garden

0:28:42 > 0:28:44was the trees...

0:28:48 > 0:28:51so David has made them a key part of his design.

0:28:53 > 0:28:56- Just around there would be perfect. Really nice.- Yeah.

0:28:56 > 0:28:58The yellow really picks up the yellow of the lawn.

0:28:58 > 0:29:01- The yellow of the daffodils...- OK. - ..that's what were going for.

0:29:01 > 0:29:05Are you going for a Welsh theme with mountain ash, daffodils?

0:29:05 > 0:29:07Pretty much just trying to invade England with Wales, yeah.

0:29:07 > 0:29:11- But isn't he gorgeous?- Good tree. - Love this tree.

0:29:11 > 0:29:12It may not be that big now,

0:29:12 > 0:29:16but mountain ash can grow to more than 12 metres tall

0:29:16 > 0:29:20so will eventually be a key feature in this natural landscape.

0:29:20 > 0:29:22People get worried about putting trees in their garden

0:29:22 > 0:29:24and think they're going to take over,

0:29:24 > 0:29:26- but there's a good selection that don't get too huge.- Yeah.

0:29:26 > 0:29:29He's a good little small tree. Loads of interest on him.

0:29:29 > 0:29:33Berries, blossom and beautiful autumn colour.

0:29:33 > 0:29:37- Right there then?- Whoa, whoa, whoa. Easy.- BOTH:- Easy, tiger.

0:29:39 > 0:29:42Cos I don't want him to be too symmetrical

0:29:42 > 0:29:44in between the two willow structures.

0:29:44 > 0:29:47- Right.- I think it's going to require me looking from that way.

0:29:47 > 0:29:50- All right, then. I'll let you. - Right.

0:29:50 > 0:29:53We have got to finish this garden today, you know, sir.

0:29:55 > 0:29:57A little bit to the left, if you can.

0:29:57 > 0:30:00- Left. Your left, my left? - Your right.

0:30:00 > 0:30:03- I know.- You're never right. - I'm always right!

0:30:03 > 0:30:06Your left then, quickly.

0:30:06 > 0:30:08- Up.- That is...

0:30:08 > 0:30:09- Nice. I think that looks... Yeah. - Yeah?

0:30:09 > 0:30:12- Are you happy with that? - Oh, I'm ecstatic.

0:30:12 > 0:30:14Perfect then.

0:30:14 > 0:30:16- This one is set. - Think that looks nice. Yeah.

0:30:16 > 0:30:18Yeah, keep digging.

0:30:20 > 0:30:24And with that, David goes back to willow weaving,

0:30:24 > 0:30:26leaving Charlie with the digging.

0:30:29 > 0:30:33When you're planting quite mature specimens,

0:30:33 > 0:30:36it's worth making the hole a bit bigger than you really need

0:30:36 > 0:30:41so that the soil is nice and loose, and then firming it in.

0:30:41 > 0:30:44We're about halfway through the day.

0:30:44 > 0:30:46We're not really halfway through the garden.

0:30:46 > 0:30:48Well, not as far as I think.

0:30:48 > 0:30:52I think there's too much enjoyment and chatting going on

0:30:52 > 0:30:57between Scott and David and not enough weaving

0:30:57 > 0:31:00in both ways - willow and working.

0:31:00 > 0:31:05Whilst the boss weaves away, Charlie's not hanging about.

0:31:05 > 0:31:08With the £1,500 budget pushed to the limit,

0:31:08 > 0:31:10David tasked her with creating

0:31:10 > 0:31:13a dirt-cheap feature for the garage wall,

0:31:13 > 0:31:15and now her three planters are in place,

0:31:15 > 0:31:17she's prepping them for planting.

0:31:17 > 0:31:20So, I'm just putting some bonded fibre in the bottom

0:31:20 > 0:31:22because there's quite big gaps at the bottom

0:31:22 > 0:31:25and the compost will just wash through.

0:31:34 > 0:31:35But even at a metre square,

0:31:35 > 0:31:38they're not covering much of the wall

0:31:38 > 0:31:41so she's come up with an ingenious solution -

0:31:41 > 0:31:45using some spare willow to add height.

0:31:45 > 0:31:48And I think that looks pretty darn good.

0:31:49 > 0:31:51Even if I am blowing my own trumpet.

0:31:51 > 0:31:54And when it's plants in there, woohoo!

0:31:58 > 0:32:00With the willow fence complete,

0:32:00 > 0:32:03David has moved on to the two main planting beds

0:32:03 > 0:32:04near the front door.

0:32:04 > 0:32:07- Bring more grasses there for me, please, Charlie.- More grasses.

0:32:07 > 0:32:09Yes, please.

0:32:12 > 0:32:15Here the boys have designed an ornamental meadow,

0:32:15 > 0:32:19with beautiful trees underplanted with an array of colourful flowers.

0:32:19 > 0:32:23We've got a really natural planting scheme at the moment.

0:32:23 > 0:32:28It's predominantly grass. 50% grass, 50% perennial plants.

0:32:28 > 0:32:30So, it's a good thing just to get the grasses first, space them out,

0:32:30 > 0:32:32see how they want to work.

0:32:32 > 0:32:33And then the perennials,

0:32:33 > 0:32:35like this achillea, I can just dot in the middle.

0:32:35 > 0:32:36If you have the space,

0:32:36 > 0:32:40a beautifully planted front garden can improve the look

0:32:40 > 0:32:42of any property and even add value to it.

0:32:46 > 0:32:48When designing front gardens,

0:32:48 > 0:32:51landscape designer Jacquetta Menzies believes it's possible

0:32:51 > 0:32:54to make them practical and attractive.

0:32:54 > 0:32:56Access,

0:32:56 > 0:32:58generally for front gardens,

0:32:58 > 0:33:01is the most important thing.

0:33:01 > 0:33:03The striking thing about this particular garden

0:33:03 > 0:33:05is its steepness.

0:33:05 > 0:33:09Have it lit to have handrails. Use stainless steel touches.

0:33:09 > 0:33:12I think stainless steel brings light into the garden.

0:33:12 > 0:33:18Carefully consider your planting, making it gorgeous and appealing.

0:33:18 > 0:33:22Even in the smallest garden, I think you can do that with shrubs.

0:33:22 > 0:33:24In this steep garden,

0:33:24 > 0:33:28raised terraces were made to create several level beds.

0:33:28 > 0:33:31They make it practical and beautiful, but useful as well.

0:33:34 > 0:33:36Having your vegetables in your front garden

0:33:36 > 0:33:39means that you go past them every single day.

0:33:39 > 0:33:43Your vegetables are getting so much more care and attention,

0:33:43 > 0:33:44but the overall effect is

0:33:44 > 0:33:47it must be an attractive and welcoming space.

0:33:53 > 0:33:57In Faversham, the planting is well underway,

0:33:57 > 0:34:00but the rain that Charlie predicted has arrived.

0:34:09 > 0:34:10Weather is a bit damp.

0:34:10 > 0:34:14Haven't got my partner in crime with me, but it's all right.

0:34:14 > 0:34:17I've got to hold on, haven't I?

0:34:17 > 0:34:20I think that's an understatement - "A bit damp."

0:34:20 > 0:34:23It is absolutely chucking it.

0:34:27 > 0:34:30And there's still a lot to do.

0:34:31 > 0:34:35Many of the plants that David has ordered are yet to flower,

0:34:35 > 0:34:38so to help inject some colour, he's asked Charlie and Kate

0:34:38 > 0:34:43to transplant some of Gloria's blooming spring flowers.

0:34:43 > 0:34:47We got some bluebells and some primulas.

0:34:47 > 0:34:50They will only have got trashed, so they will establish.

0:34:50 > 0:34:52They probably won't do very well next year,

0:34:52 > 0:34:55but the following year, they'll be fine.

0:34:55 > 0:35:01And I have to say, these are the not English bluebells.

0:35:01 > 0:35:04They're the Spanish bluebells.

0:35:04 > 0:35:07But you know, they're colourful.

0:35:07 > 0:35:11They're free. And when the budget is the budget it is, we need free.

0:35:11 > 0:35:14KATIE LAUGHS

0:35:14 > 0:35:17David's focusing on where the money has been spent -

0:35:17 > 0:35:19the rest of the new trees.

0:35:19 > 0:35:21We've got this cherry, we've got a birch,

0:35:21 > 0:35:23we've got hawthorn - all really British native trees.

0:35:35 > 0:35:40But he needs an experienced hand to help establish them.

0:35:40 > 0:35:44- Charlie, how do you use these things?- Oh, them. Bit of a...

0:35:44 > 0:35:46Is it a crisscross-y version...? Is it...?

0:35:46 > 0:35:48They're a bit of a faff, those ones, aren't they?

0:35:48 > 0:35:50SHE GRUNTS

0:35:50 > 0:35:53A bit like getting over to you is a bit of a faff.

0:35:53 > 0:35:55Is it the wrong way around? Ah. Maybe that...

0:35:55 > 0:35:56I mean, I don't...

0:35:56 > 0:35:59- Is that meant to go around the tree or...?- I...

0:35:59 > 0:36:01- No. I would suggest that's around the tree.- OK, cool.

0:36:01 > 0:36:04- That's around the tree...- Oh, this is going to be a hassle.

0:36:04 > 0:36:08..so tie the tree to the stake and not the stake to the tree.

0:36:08 > 0:36:11A stake protects a young tree from wind damage

0:36:11 > 0:36:15and supports it during the critical early growth period.

0:36:17 > 0:36:21Cos with a tree tie you want the tree to rock a bit

0:36:21 > 0:36:22but not too much.

0:36:22 > 0:36:27What happens is that rock actually causes the strength

0:36:27 > 0:36:28- to build up in it.- Yeah.

0:36:28 > 0:36:32And if you have it too rigid, when you take them off they just go...

0:36:32 > 0:36:33Cool. I'm happy.

0:36:36 > 0:36:38With the plants starting to go in,

0:36:38 > 0:36:43the team are on the home stretch... with one major issue -

0:36:43 > 0:36:46the path is still not finished.

0:36:46 > 0:36:51But just when she's starting to despair, Kate spots a white van.

0:36:51 > 0:36:53It was touch and go if it was going to get here.

0:36:53 > 0:36:57It's the finishing touch for our seating area.

0:36:57 > 0:36:59Without having this, this gravel crumb,

0:36:59 > 0:37:03they would've just had a seating area of hardcore

0:37:03 > 0:37:04and really wouldn't have looked very nice.

0:37:04 > 0:37:08- Dan, we need some others. Come on. - SHE LAUGHS

0:37:13 > 0:37:16But it still needs to get from the van to the path.

0:37:18 > 0:37:20Yay!

0:37:27 > 0:37:29As the boys barrow on,

0:37:29 > 0:37:34Charlie has stolen a few plants to flower up her new planters.

0:37:37 > 0:37:40I'm planting this up with a mixture of perennials

0:37:40 > 0:37:44and shrubs and also some bulbs,

0:37:44 > 0:37:50and then we've got some little anemones and some grape hyacinths.

0:37:50 > 0:37:51These are the white ones.

0:37:51 > 0:37:54You normally see the blue ones, but this is a bit more than usual.

0:37:54 > 0:37:56And the boss is impressed.

0:37:56 > 0:37:59- These are looking great, Charlie. - I'm really pleased with them.

0:37:59 > 0:38:02- They're quite sweet, aren't they? - Yeah, they're really nice.

0:38:02 > 0:38:05- And I'd like to put an order in for two more, please.- Uh...

0:38:05 > 0:38:07Just outside the house it'd be nice to put a few of these in

0:38:07 > 0:38:10- to add height and structure. - Hold on, hold on.

0:38:10 > 0:38:12You said two a minute ago. How come we're up to a few all of a sudden?

0:38:12 > 0:38:15- I'm pretty sure a few is two. - No, a few is a couple.

0:38:15 > 0:38:17- A couple is two.- A couple is two.

0:38:17 > 0:38:19A few is a couple and a couple is two. Ah!

0:38:19 > 0:38:21Well, on that bombshell, away you go.

0:38:21 > 0:38:23THEY LAUGH

0:38:30 > 0:38:32The team are into the final phase...

0:38:32 > 0:38:35We've just got the planting to finish

0:38:35 > 0:38:37- and then it's just tidy, tidy.- Yeah.

0:38:38 > 0:38:41..and David doesn't waste another minute

0:38:41 > 0:38:44in laying the top coat of decorative gravel.

0:38:46 > 0:38:49It's also a really easy material to use and lay.

0:38:49 > 0:38:51It's great for creating curves

0:38:51 > 0:38:54because you don't have to be cutting slabs or paviers.

0:38:54 > 0:38:57The rain is really coming down now,

0:38:57 > 0:39:00and with Gloria and Stan desperate to see the new garden,

0:39:00 > 0:39:05David's big reveal is in danger of being a bit of a wash-out.

0:39:05 > 0:39:08But the team remain undaunted,

0:39:08 > 0:39:11and as the final touches go in,

0:39:11 > 0:39:14the rather soggy new garden is finished.

0:39:23 > 0:39:28Two years ago, Stan and Gloria's beloved front garden was swept away,

0:39:28 > 0:39:30and even after extensive rebuilding,

0:39:30 > 0:39:33all that was left was a barren wasteland.

0:39:36 > 0:39:39Now after a £1,500 makeover,

0:39:39 > 0:39:43Harry and David's design has restored its magic.

0:39:43 > 0:39:47But the real test is what the clients think.

0:39:47 > 0:39:50They're coming, they're coming, they're coming.

0:39:50 > 0:39:52- The eyes are closed. - Round the corner this way.

0:39:52 > 0:39:54Keep coming. Don't worry. You're nowhere near anything.

0:39:54 > 0:39:58This garden has turned out really sweet.

0:39:58 > 0:40:00Open your eyes.

0:40:00 > 0:40:02- Wow.- Oh, wow.

0:40:02 > 0:40:05- Oh, it looks absolutely beautiful. - Fantastic.

0:40:05 > 0:40:07- Is it kind of what you imagined or...?- Better.

0:40:07 > 0:40:11- Better. Oh, good! That's a great one.- Oh, it's absolutely...

0:40:11 > 0:40:13Charlie put a little bit of her little touch in there

0:40:13 > 0:40:15- with the willow as well. - Oh, I love that.

0:40:15 > 0:40:18- Oh, it looks really nice cos it takes of all this tarmac.- So good.

0:40:18 > 0:40:21We've got a weeping birch. We've got a hawthorn.

0:40:21 > 0:40:24- Yep. - We've got a mountain ash there.

0:40:24 > 0:40:27- Oh, that's...- And then there's a cherry just through there as well.

0:40:27 > 0:40:28And this is the wild...

0:40:28 > 0:40:31- So, this is the wild flower meadow. - Yeah, yeah.- Yeah.

0:40:31 > 0:40:33So, that's not looking amazing at the moment...

0:40:33 > 0:40:36- It will come. - ..but in a couple of months...- Yeah.

0:40:36 > 0:40:38- Take it all in.- Yeah. That's...

0:40:38 > 0:40:40- And you can really see the willow there, can't you, as well?- Yeah.

0:40:40 > 0:40:43- Look at that.- Gorgeous. Looks amazing.

0:40:43 > 0:40:46- That is great.- Beautiful.- Can you imagine yourself in this space?

0:40:46 > 0:40:49- Yeah.- Yeah.- In a word.- No, yeah.

0:40:49 > 0:40:52Does it have that kind of woodland feel, the magic that it had before?

0:40:52 > 0:40:54- Yep.- Yep. It's completely different...- It's better.

0:40:54 > 0:40:56- ..but, yeah. - I'm glad it's completely different

0:40:56 > 0:41:00because it feels like a fresh start again, you know what I mean?

0:41:00 > 0:41:03David is relieved that, even in the wet,

0:41:03 > 0:41:06Stan and Gloria can see what their new garden will be.

0:41:06 > 0:41:07That went well.

0:41:07 > 0:41:10Ah, it did, yeah. It went really, really, well.

0:41:10 > 0:41:13Loved it. Tell you what, they loved the planters as well.

0:41:13 > 0:41:15- Did they? - They loved the bit of willow there.

0:41:15 > 0:41:16Really, really cool.

0:41:16 > 0:41:19- I did say I'd give you a big hug. - Yeah, and a kiss! Whoa!

0:41:19 > 0:41:21- Not washing this cheek! - There you go!

0:41:23 > 0:41:26- GLORIA:- Yeah, I felt quite emotional when we came around the corner

0:41:26 > 0:41:29and sort of just that wow factor.

0:41:29 > 0:41:32- In fact, it's more so, I think. - Oh, yeah.

0:41:32 > 0:41:34And it's going to look just magical.

0:41:34 > 0:41:37- It'll be a garden for the future. - Absolutely.

0:41:37 > 0:41:41And just a few weeks later with a dose of sun,

0:41:41 > 0:41:44David and Harry's design is really coming to life.

0:41:45 > 0:41:51The boys eked out the £1,500 budget to maximum effect.

0:41:51 > 0:41:56Now it's dry, the path and seating area has a natural, rustic surface -

0:41:56 > 0:42:00ideal for Gloria and Stan to sit and enjoy a glass of wine

0:42:00 > 0:42:02whilst taking in the views.

0:42:04 > 0:42:07The couple love the natural woodland look,

0:42:07 > 0:42:09so the boys spent just over £600

0:42:09 > 0:42:12on cherry, birch and mountain ash trees...

0:42:18 > 0:42:22and a wild meadow lawn that cost just £200.

0:42:25 > 0:42:28Charlie's new planters are the bonus feature,

0:42:28 > 0:42:32made from Stan's old troughs that were recycled, topped with willow

0:42:32 > 0:42:35and planted with perennials and bulbs.

0:42:39 > 0:42:43But the real star is the living willow fence.

0:42:43 > 0:42:46At just £100, it breaks up the space,

0:42:46 > 0:42:48obscures the view of the tarmac
