0:00:02 > 0:00:03With her can-do attitude,

0:00:03 > 0:00:07- love of simple gardens and decades of experience...- Hello!

0:00:07 > 0:00:10..Charlie Dimmock is one of Britain's best-loved gardeners.

0:00:10 > 0:00:12Looking good, boys!

0:00:12 > 0:00:15But the new kids on the gardening block are the Rich brothers.

0:00:15 > 0:00:17We want to be the brothers

0:00:17 > 0:00:19that change people's perceptions of gardeners.

0:00:19 > 0:00:22Winners of multiple medals at the Chelsea Flower Show...

0:00:22 > 0:00:24- Oh, good turn.- Amazing, isn't it?

0:00:24 > 0:00:28..the boys have become known for their dramatic outdoor spaces.

0:00:30 > 0:00:34Now these two different generations of gardening are going head-to-head.

0:00:34 > 0:00:38I know they've got a gold medal, but I can come up with a few ideas.

0:00:38 > 0:00:42They're meeting frustrated garden owners across the country.

0:00:42 > 0:00:44The photos made it look tiny.

0:00:44 > 0:00:46It is, isn't it?

0:00:46 > 0:00:48- I'm sure you've seen larger. - I don't know what to do with it.

0:00:48 > 0:00:52- And will each pitch them a design based on their needs...- Wow!

0:00:52 > 0:00:54- ..and budget. - It looks really exciting.

0:00:54 > 0:00:56It doesn't look like it could be our garden.

0:00:56 > 0:00:59- The winner...- Ta-dah!

0:00:59 > 0:01:00Whoo!

0:01:00 > 0:01:02..brings their design to life.

0:01:02 > 0:01:03Hold on, hold on.

0:01:03 > 0:01:05Sweet as a nut.

0:01:05 > 0:01:07And the loser has to help them build it.

0:01:07 > 0:01:10Oh, I'm getting irritated now with faffing around.

0:01:10 > 0:01:11This is what happens...

0:01:11 > 0:01:14- Does he ever get irritating? - All the time.

0:01:14 > 0:01:16..when different styles collide...

0:01:16 > 0:01:18- Who chose these?- One, two, three.

0:01:20 > 0:01:22- This looks like your design.- Yeah!

0:01:22 > 0:01:25..to turn garden dreams into reality.

0:01:25 > 0:01:26Wow!

0:01:26 > 0:01:27Open your eyes.

0:01:27 > 0:01:30Wow! It's amazing.

0:01:31 > 0:01:32It's beautiful.

0:01:39 > 0:01:42So, whose garden will Charlie and the Rich brothers

0:01:42 > 0:01:44be battling over today?

0:01:44 > 0:01:47Here we have Craig and Jenna.

0:01:47 > 0:01:51And I have to say, you know, life has got very, very busy.

0:01:51 > 0:01:55Nurse Jenna and training manager Craig moved into their house

0:01:55 > 0:01:57two years ago with their dog Doug.

0:01:57 > 0:02:01The garden was on their to-do list, but then they had unexpected news.

0:02:01 > 0:02:04Last autumn, we found out Jenna was pregnant,

0:02:04 > 0:02:06which was, you know, absolutely amazing.

0:02:06 > 0:02:08We were absolutely chuffed.

0:02:08 > 0:02:11But their news turned into a double whammy.

0:02:13 > 0:02:15What we didn't expect was to find out

0:02:15 > 0:02:17there were two little babies in there.

0:02:17 > 0:02:20A few weeks ago, their two little bundles of joy,

0:02:20 > 0:02:21Edie and Felix, arrived.

0:02:23 > 0:02:25Mornings are pretty busy trying to get them all up and sorted

0:02:25 > 0:02:29and ready. Chaos, really, the rest of the day.

0:02:29 > 0:02:33And then you get home, have five minutes' peace and then...

0:02:33 > 0:02:38Yeah, cook dinner. Take Doug out. Bath them, feed them.

0:02:38 > 0:02:41- And then the night-time tales. - Attempt to put them into bed.

0:02:41 > 0:02:44They've just started to smile, so me being at work every day,

0:02:44 > 0:02:49I come home, to see a smile is absolutely fantastic.

0:02:49 > 0:02:53Up to their eyes with bottle feeds and nappy changing,

0:02:53 > 0:02:55the garden has moved down the list of priorities.

0:02:56 > 0:02:58This is the garden.

0:02:59 > 0:03:01Looks quite big there, doesn't it?

0:03:01 > 0:03:04Don't be fooled, it's not that big.

0:03:04 > 0:03:06It's ten metres by eight metres.

0:03:06 > 0:03:09And as you can see, there is quite a slope.

0:03:09 > 0:03:12So, there's a lot of space wasted there, isn't there?

0:03:12 > 0:03:16The garden has a half-metre drop from the patio to the lawn.

0:03:16 > 0:03:18And being a small plot, it's really noticeable.

0:03:22 > 0:03:24What I don't like about the garden is it's just bland,

0:03:24 > 0:03:26so there's nothing nice to look at.

0:03:26 > 0:03:29There's just nothing, nothing there, really.

0:03:29 > 0:03:31- There's manhole covers everywhere. - Yeah.

0:03:34 > 0:03:37The only member of the family using the garden is Doug the dog.

0:03:37 > 0:03:41But with new arrivals, Jenna and Craig want it all to change.

0:03:42 > 0:03:46The house I grew up in had a great big garden with an apple tree

0:03:46 > 0:03:51in there, loads of space to play football with my brother as well.

0:03:51 > 0:03:54And Craig would like the same kind of childhood memories

0:03:54 > 0:03:56for his own children.

0:03:56 > 0:03:57It'd be amazing.

0:03:57 > 0:04:00We'd have a whole, it would be like having an extension almost,

0:04:00 > 0:04:02a whole other room to our house.

0:04:02 > 0:04:05Somewhere for the children to be able to roll around,

0:04:05 > 0:04:07play, kick a football.

0:04:07 > 0:04:10Somewhere we can sit and enjoy an evening.

0:04:10 > 0:04:13For a social aspect as well, really.

0:04:13 > 0:04:15And somewhere for our dog to kind of...

0:04:15 > 0:04:17He likes to have a sniff around as well.

0:04:17 > 0:04:20But with an extra two mouths to feed,

0:04:20 > 0:04:23money is a little on the tight side.

0:04:23 > 0:04:26Budget is £1,000.

0:04:26 > 0:04:31- Oh, so this is tight. - Very tight. Ideas?

0:04:31 > 0:04:32- Well, I think...- Flooding it!

0:04:35 > 0:04:37£1,000 is the lowest budget

0:04:37 > 0:04:40the rival designers have had to cope with.

0:04:40 > 0:04:44And not only that, this garden has some major safety issues.

0:04:45 > 0:04:48Delivering what this family are hoping for

0:04:48 > 0:04:49is going to be a challenge.

0:04:55 > 0:04:57So, they're heading to Stevenage.

0:04:57 > 0:05:00To figure out how to make that tiny budget go further,

0:05:00 > 0:05:04they want to meet the family and find out more about their lives.

0:05:04 > 0:05:07They also want to see just how unsafe this backyard is.

0:05:09 > 0:05:12- Oh! That's a bit of a slope, isn't it?- That is a serious slope.

0:05:12 > 0:05:15- That's not quite so wonderful, though.- No!- I mean, yeah.

0:05:15 > 0:05:18- They are quite blatant, and they? - They're not even...

0:05:18 > 0:05:20They're an eyesore, aren't they? Seriously.

0:05:20 > 0:05:23Trip hazard, to say the least.

0:05:23 > 0:05:26- Not as shady as I thought it was going to be.- Should get quite a lot.

0:05:26 > 0:05:28During the daytime, yes. Nice.

0:05:28 > 0:05:31That kind of a direction, isn't it? Yeah.

0:05:32 > 0:05:34Well, that's the garden.

0:05:34 > 0:05:38Now, Charlie wants to quiz Jenna and Craig on what it could mean

0:05:38 > 0:05:39for the family

0:05:39 > 0:05:42whereas the boys are keen to see what kind of interior decor

0:05:42 > 0:05:44the couple prefer.

0:05:44 > 0:05:49- Nice! Very cool.- This is nice, it's cosy.- Yes.- Quite airy, quite clean.

0:05:49 > 0:05:52- Yeah, really nice space. - Quite contemporary.

0:05:52 > 0:05:54- JENNA:- I like colour, I like a lot of plants.

0:05:54 > 0:05:58Uh-huh, so at your last home, did you have a garden?

0:05:58 > 0:06:01We had had put roses up one side and a lot of hydrangeas and things.

0:06:01 > 0:06:05- OK.- So, it was nice and colourful. - You're not a novice, as such.

0:06:05 > 0:06:08- No, I will have a go. Whether it works or not...- Oh, good.

0:06:08 > 0:06:11Oh, it's nice to come to somebody that wants

0:06:11 > 0:06:14a garden that they can actually garden in.

0:06:14 > 0:06:18So, Jenna likes her traditional flowers, but inside,

0:06:18 > 0:06:20the boys have seen a more quirky side.

0:06:20 > 0:06:24Look at that guy, he's obviously from the '60s, a little bit retro.

0:06:24 > 0:06:27And some cool retro handles there, old.

0:06:27 > 0:06:29With a bit of contemporary. And definitely stylish.

0:06:29 > 0:06:31Stylish, yeah, right.

0:06:35 > 0:06:38And for the children, what, you don't want to fill the garden with

0:06:38 > 0:06:43a trampoline, lots of colourful climbing things yet, do you?

0:06:43 > 0:06:47- Not yet, no.- No, because how old are they?- Three weeks.

0:06:47 > 0:06:50- Three weeks, they are brand-new! - Yes, brand-new.

0:06:50 > 0:06:55- OK, so you just want to make it safe for them.- Absolutely.

0:06:55 > 0:06:57And a socialising area for you.

0:06:57 > 0:07:00But also an area to do a little bit of gardening and pottering.

0:07:00 > 0:07:02- Yeah.- Spot on.

0:07:03 > 0:07:06For Jenna, Craig and their two new arrivals to be happy,

0:07:06 > 0:07:09this garden needs to be right.

0:07:09 > 0:07:12But dealing with the slope and the manholes is going to make

0:07:12 > 0:07:14a sizeable dent in the budget.

0:07:17 > 0:07:21So, it's time for Charlie and the boys to get cracking.

0:07:21 > 0:07:25They each have to come up with a design for Jenna and Craig's garden.

0:07:26 > 0:07:28They will then pitch it to the couple,

0:07:28 > 0:07:30who will choose which one gets built.

0:07:31 > 0:07:34But it isn't over for the loser, as they have to get their hands dirty

0:07:34 > 0:07:36helping the winner build their garden.

0:07:38 > 0:07:40So, who's got the measure of this one?

0:07:45 > 0:07:49Charlie was inspired by Jenna's have-a-go enthusiasm...

0:07:50 > 0:07:53..while the boys loved the couple's quirky taste.

0:07:53 > 0:07:57It's time for them to reveal their vision for the garden.

0:07:57 > 0:08:00- Hello!- Hello.- OK.

0:08:00 > 0:08:01Here is our design.

0:08:03 > 0:08:09So, using your raised up area outside the patio doors,

0:08:09 > 0:08:15I've extended the patio to about this level here.

0:08:15 > 0:08:17Now, to create the retaining wall,

0:08:17 > 0:08:21I'm using an organ pipe effect of timbers,

0:08:21 > 0:08:24uprights that will go right the way across

0:08:24 > 0:08:26and then we've got our steps down.

0:08:27 > 0:08:31To sort out the levels, Charlie has extended the current patio

0:08:31 > 0:08:34and added an organ pipe fence for a retaining wall,

0:08:34 > 0:08:37whereas the boys have approached it differently.

0:08:37 > 0:08:39With the design, we've split it, it's got a level change.

0:08:39 > 0:08:41So, we really wanted to use that.

0:08:41 > 0:08:43So, this top area is going to be quite floral

0:08:43 > 0:08:45and have a little planting.

0:08:45 > 0:08:48So, if you're in the kitchen, you've got this beautiful

0:08:48 > 0:08:49view out into the garden.

0:08:49 > 0:08:51Again, we have with this level change,

0:08:51 > 0:08:54we wanted to create this lovely family space.

0:08:54 > 0:08:57So, if you're enjoying a cup of coffee,

0:08:57 > 0:09:02you could be outside and the two twins can be crawling around,

0:09:02 > 0:09:03as they do.

0:09:03 > 0:09:06So, two different approaches to the slope,

0:09:06 > 0:09:09but what about the manhole covers?

0:09:09 > 0:09:14So, I've lost the manhole covers by basically planting round them.

0:09:14 > 0:09:15So, they're not there any more,

0:09:15 > 0:09:19so it would make mowing the grass much more easy.

0:09:19 > 0:09:22- DAVID:- The one up there is hidden within this planting bed,

0:09:22 > 0:09:23which is great.

0:09:23 > 0:09:26And then these two would be hidden in the patio here

0:09:26 > 0:09:29because we'd use like a recess drain that you could slab over.

0:09:29 > 0:09:32- They're obviously still accessible? - They'd be perfectly accessible.

0:09:32 > 0:09:36- But we'd be like magicians and just make them disappear.- Perfect.

0:09:36 > 0:09:38Now for the planting.

0:09:38 > 0:09:41And with young children, they have to be careful.

0:09:41 > 0:09:44The other thing I wanted to do was grow lots of plants,

0:09:44 > 0:09:47that one, will make the area look very attractive but also are

0:09:47 > 0:09:50edible or usable in some way.

0:09:50 > 0:09:54So, I've gone for things like blackberry,

0:09:54 > 0:09:56but it's the thornless one.

0:09:56 > 0:09:59On this fence side, because it's quite a sunny fence,

0:09:59 > 0:10:03I was thinking of kiwi fruit, which is really very attractive.

0:10:03 > 0:10:06I've got a small dwarf apple tree.

0:10:06 > 0:10:09Charlie's apple tree might strike a chord with Craig

0:10:09 > 0:10:11and his childhood garden memories.

0:10:13 > 0:10:15So, the type of planting we wanted to give you

0:10:15 > 0:10:17was really soft and really naturalistic,

0:10:17 > 0:10:20something that definitely wasn't going to require too much

0:10:20 > 0:10:23maintenance because you guys have obviously got your hands full.

0:10:23 > 0:10:25There would be quite a soft movement of grasses

0:10:25 > 0:10:27and then interplant that with perennials

0:10:27 > 0:10:29that would have a bit of form.

0:10:29 > 0:10:31Nice whites, it's quite uplifting in the garden.

0:10:31 > 0:10:34Then maybe move through to a few blues and purples.

0:10:34 > 0:10:37But Charlie has one more trick up her sleeve.

0:10:37 > 0:10:41The reason I gave you an island bed was, as a child,

0:10:41 > 0:10:46I remember running round and round in circles for hours

0:10:46 > 0:10:49playing chase, just round and round.

0:10:50 > 0:10:53But Jenna and Craig have questions.

0:10:53 > 0:10:56And the patio, is that the existing one there?

0:10:56 > 0:10:58Yes, this one up here is the existing patio,

0:10:58 > 0:11:01- this one here would be the additional one.- OK, great.

0:11:01 > 0:11:03And the apples, are they small apples, are they?

0:11:03 > 0:11:05- No, they're full-size apples.- OK.

0:11:05 > 0:11:07All they do is they graft it onto a root stock

0:11:07 > 0:11:09so it doesn't get too big.

0:11:09 > 0:11:11So, you won't be selling the apples to a supermarket

0:11:11 > 0:11:12or anything like that but...

0:11:12 > 0:11:14Make my own cider.

0:11:14 > 0:11:16Probably not, no!

0:11:18 > 0:11:20The pitch is over.

0:11:25 > 0:11:28It's now all down to Jenna and Craig.

0:11:28 > 0:11:31Yeah, I like the fact that it's lowered down and it kind of

0:11:31 > 0:11:34gives you a mini courtyard, doesn't it?

0:11:34 > 0:11:40OK, so I think this one, I like the colour of the plants a bit more

0:11:40 > 0:11:43and the idea of the kids picking them and growing things

0:11:43 > 0:11:45that we can eat.

0:11:45 > 0:11:47OK, and what about the apple tree there?

0:11:48 > 0:11:50- Yeah, that's got... - It's nice, isn't it?

0:11:50 > 0:11:54So, there's kind of pros and cons to both really, isn't there?

0:11:54 > 0:11:58- Do you think we're set? - Yeah, I think so.- OK. Great.

0:11:58 > 0:12:01This is a hard decision for Jenna and Craig.

0:12:01 > 0:12:03With the twins to consider,

0:12:03 > 0:12:06it needs to be a garden they can all grow with.

0:12:06 > 0:12:09So, will they go for Charlie's extended patio,

0:12:09 > 0:12:13edible garden and circular planter for the kids to run around

0:12:13 > 0:12:17or the boys' double patio and simple low-maintenance planting?

0:12:18 > 0:12:19- ALL:- Hello!

0:12:19 > 0:12:21- Hello.- Hey.- OK.

0:12:22 > 0:12:25After much deliberation, we've made a decision.

0:12:25 > 0:12:28It was really tough, but I think we're going to go for...

0:12:31 > 0:12:34- Hey!- Good work!- Oh, amazing!

0:12:34 > 0:12:38I think what sold it to us was the fact that we were lower

0:12:38 > 0:12:42to the ground, so we can see the twins sort of crawling

0:12:42 > 0:12:44and rolling around, really.

0:12:44 > 0:12:45But it was really difficult.

0:12:47 > 0:12:50So, the Rich brothers have won. But Jenna's not quite finished.

0:12:50 > 0:12:53Yeah, so we really liked Charlie's idea of having the apple tree.

0:12:53 > 0:12:57I just wondered if that could be incorporated into your design?

0:12:57 > 0:13:01- Yeah, of course. We'd love to have it in.- If I let you! If I let you.

0:13:01 > 0:13:05- Please can we put it in? - As it's you, all right then!- Yes.

0:13:05 > 0:13:08Oh, that's nice, it's nice being able to combine and create

0:13:08 > 0:13:10the garden that you guys love.

0:13:10 > 0:13:14The boys may have won, but to deliver the garden they've promised,

0:13:14 > 0:13:16they will need Charlie on board

0:13:16 > 0:13:19to make Jenna and Craig's dream garden a reality.

0:13:26 > 0:13:28It's an early morning in Stevenage.

0:13:28 > 0:13:32With the boys off-site, making some final tweaks to their design,

0:13:32 > 0:13:36they've sent project manager Kate and a landscapers Scott and Adam

0:13:36 > 0:13:38in the team to make a start on the ground work.

0:13:40 > 0:13:44To make the best use of the slope in the garden, the brothers have

0:13:44 > 0:13:49designed a second lower patio that's accessed by the existing steps.

0:13:49 > 0:13:52But Scott has spotted a problem.

0:13:52 > 0:13:55So, the patio is going to be, that's the wall.

0:13:56 > 0:14:00Through there. That's the patio area. Just very small.

0:14:00 > 0:14:01- KATE:- It's very small, isn't it?

0:14:03 > 0:14:07The patio may look right on plan, but in reality, comes up short.

0:14:07 > 0:14:11So, the team decide to make a judgment call and add another row.

0:14:12 > 0:14:16So, whilst Kate and her trusty van are picking up extra slabs,

0:14:16 > 0:14:19the landscapers start removing the turf to create the flower beds.

0:14:26 > 0:14:29And level the area for the new patio.

0:14:29 > 0:14:33But what seemed like a simple job is proving rather fiddly.

0:14:33 > 0:14:35The levels are miles out,

0:14:35 > 0:14:40so that part of the garden there is about six inches below this.

0:14:40 > 0:14:43Not only does the plot slope from back to front,

0:14:43 > 0:14:45it dips from one side to the other.

0:14:47 > 0:14:50This is backbreaking!

0:14:51 > 0:14:55And with the sun beating down, it's not getting any easier.

0:14:55 > 0:14:56Jeez!

0:14:58 > 0:14:59Still really high.

0:15:01 > 0:15:03Thought I'd made a big dent in that.

0:15:13 > 0:15:16What do you reckon? It's going to be getting closer.

0:15:16 > 0:15:19Finally, the lower half of the site is level.

0:15:24 > 0:15:27Lovely, that's what we like! And Charlie definitely.

0:15:27 > 0:15:29Let's get this show on the road!

0:15:31 > 0:15:36So, the boys can prep it for the arrival of the new tiles.

0:15:54 > 0:15:58To connect the lower patio with the existing upper patio,

0:15:58 > 0:16:01the boys have designed a retaining wall.

0:16:01 > 0:16:03So, Adam's putting in the footings.

0:16:03 > 0:16:08A beam of solid concrete, basically, so the trusted brickie arrives,

0:16:08 > 0:16:12he's got a good solid surface to get his wall up.

0:16:12 > 0:16:17And at the front, the Rich brothers and Charlie have just arrived.

0:16:17 > 0:16:19Now, this is a small garden, isn't it?

0:16:19 > 0:16:22- Which gets me a little bit worried. - Small? It's inky dinky.

0:16:22 > 0:16:25We're going to be right on top of each other trying to work.

0:16:25 > 0:16:28- That wall, that's really got to be the first thing, hasn't it?- Yes.

0:16:28 > 0:16:30Because you want a plant behind it.

0:16:30 > 0:16:33So, we need to get that in, done and dry.

0:16:33 > 0:16:36- So what about all those manhole covers?- Agh, hiding them all!

0:16:36 > 0:16:39- Like magicians, they will disappear. - OK.

0:16:39 > 0:16:42We'll wait and see on that. So, wall, patio.

0:16:42 > 0:16:45- That's it, planting.- Planting! - Oh, done!

0:16:46 > 0:16:48If only it was that easy.

0:16:48 > 0:16:50Before the wall can go in,

0:16:50 > 0:16:53the landscapers want to get started on the patio.

0:16:54 > 0:16:55Got half a barrel load.

0:16:55 > 0:16:58Going to get some serious glare off these new slabs.

0:16:58 > 0:16:59Bright, aren't they?

0:17:01 > 0:17:05- More than of my head or...? - Yeah, probably.- Really?- It's close.

0:17:07 > 0:17:09The bottom corner could come out towards you a smidgen.

0:17:11 > 0:17:12Yeah.

0:17:14 > 0:17:18And the boys have asked Adam to start on the first manhole cover.

0:17:18 > 0:17:21This one is on the edge of the new patio area,

0:17:21 > 0:17:25so he's replacing it with a new recessed version.

0:17:25 > 0:17:27So, the top of this needs to be flushed with

0:17:27 > 0:17:31the top of the slab that I've just laid there.

0:17:31 > 0:17:33So that when there's a slab inside of this,

0:17:33 > 0:17:36all the patio runs together so you literally only see

0:17:36 > 0:17:38this reveal round the outside edge.

0:17:38 > 0:17:41These are great if you find your manhole is not in the most

0:17:41 > 0:17:43convenient of places.

0:17:43 > 0:17:47And once the patio slab is placed inside the recess,

0:17:47 > 0:17:51it will look more like a patio slab and less like a drain cover.

0:17:51 > 0:17:54It's got these handles either end.

0:17:54 > 0:17:59So, when and if you need access, you pop the handles out and you lift

0:17:59 > 0:18:03the whole lot out with the slabs in it as well and then it just

0:18:03 > 0:18:06drops back in place, looks like it's all part of the same patio.

0:18:08 > 0:18:11Meanwhile, in the front, David's learning a new trade.

0:18:13 > 0:18:16He and Harry have employed brickie Joe for the day

0:18:16 > 0:18:18to build the retaining wall,

0:18:18 > 0:18:21and David's keen to get his hands dirty.

0:18:21 > 0:18:24- Get your hands either side of these here.- Oh, like that?

0:18:24 > 0:18:29- That's it, then put your shoulder to it. Then throw it up.- Heh.

0:18:29 > 0:18:30- Go on, there you go.- Oh, hello!

0:18:30 > 0:18:33It feels like that one's about to fall off though, to be fair.

0:18:33 > 0:18:35Going to go.

0:18:35 > 0:18:36Oh, cut the old...

0:18:36 > 0:18:39Slice the old neck, good! Dream!

0:18:39 > 0:18:41You're a hod carrier now!

0:18:43 > 0:18:44Easy!

0:18:55 > 0:18:56Oh!

0:18:58 > 0:19:00Hell of a workout.

0:19:00 > 0:19:02- That's my day over, isn't it? - Is that done?

0:19:05 > 0:19:08Not content with the designing gold-medal winning gardens,

0:19:08 > 0:19:11he now fancies himself as a brickie's apprentice.

0:19:11 > 0:19:14- You can see it changing actually a little bit, can't you?- Yeah.

0:19:14 > 0:19:16Dave, mate. Just keep going.

0:19:17 > 0:19:18We should have five minutes to go!

0:19:18 > 0:19:20Well, you've got 15 minutes left.

0:19:22 > 0:19:25You'll be all right. That's it now, look. Good stuff.

0:19:29 > 0:19:31Nearly there now, not far.

0:19:31 > 0:19:33And it turns out he's a natural.

0:19:36 > 0:19:40- There we are, perfect.- How's that, yeah?- Happy days, eh?- We're off.

0:19:40 > 0:19:43Right, just do that three more times, we're out of here.

0:19:44 > 0:19:48The boys' idea is to make the wall a raised bed,

0:19:48 > 0:19:50breaking up the two areas of landscaping

0:19:50 > 0:19:52and taking the emphasis off the slope.

0:19:53 > 0:19:56But this is just one way to deal with a difficult plot.

0:19:58 > 0:20:02With space increasingly limited for new housing, today's garden owners

0:20:02 > 0:20:07often have to cope with odd-shaped or challenging plots.

0:20:07 > 0:20:11But even if you don't have a classic rectangle outside the back door,

0:20:11 > 0:20:13you can still create a stunning garden.

0:20:15 > 0:20:19L-shaped or wraparound plots lend themselves to garden rooms

0:20:19 > 0:20:22as the shape of the house naturally divides the outside space.

0:20:24 > 0:20:27Triangular plots lend themselves to curved designs

0:20:27 > 0:20:30which draw attention away from the points.

0:20:32 > 0:20:34A sloping garden can be daunting.

0:20:34 > 0:20:38But by using terracing, they can be turned into a display cabinet

0:20:38 > 0:20:43for plants, offering interesting views from above and below.

0:20:50 > 0:20:51In Stevenage...

0:20:51 > 0:20:54So, the first course is the most important course?

0:20:54 > 0:20:55Definitely the most important.

0:20:55 > 0:20:59- Otherwise if you start off wonky, you end wonky.- That's right, yeah.

0:20:59 > 0:21:01That's why I'm not doing the first course!

0:21:01 > 0:21:04Don't worry, we'll have you doing it by the end of the day.

0:21:05 > 0:21:08David's mastered the cement mixing.

0:21:08 > 0:21:10Now he's on to advanced bricklaying.

0:21:12 > 0:21:16- Little bit of muck, mortar. - That much?- Yes. Hold your brick up.

0:21:17 > 0:21:18That's it.

0:21:18 > 0:21:22One, two, three...

0:21:23 > 0:21:25- Four.- It's that first one.

0:21:25 > 0:21:28- So, that with that?- Right.

0:21:28 > 0:21:32Joe shows him a top tip on how to get it right.

0:21:32 > 0:21:35You want to get enough pressure so you can hold it above your head.

0:21:35 > 0:21:38I'm not trying that! You're on your own there.

0:21:38 > 0:21:41- Not falling for that one, am I?- It's true. If it hits, it's not ready.

0:21:43 > 0:21:46And Charlie and Harry want to see what all the fuss is about.

0:21:49 > 0:21:51Can we do this one thing? Charlie, you've got to try it.

0:21:51 > 0:21:53Oh, yeah, I see, I hear you were chicken.

0:21:53 > 0:21:56No, I tried it far too many times and failed.

0:21:56 > 0:21:58Oh, yeah, put it over your head.

0:21:58 > 0:22:01- Get enough pressure on it, put it over the head.- Please.

0:22:01 > 0:22:04Oh, God, this is genius. Oh, it wasn't long enough.

0:22:04 > 0:22:06No, it wasn't that, it was...

0:22:06 > 0:22:08Trying to put it on the edge was impossible.

0:22:08 > 0:22:09- It's fine.- Oh, nearly.

0:22:09 > 0:22:11- Oh! - THEY LAUGH

0:22:13 > 0:22:15Are you going to clean that off the slabs?

0:22:15 > 0:22:18- Right on how posh slabs now, Charlie.- She's going to have to go.

0:22:18 > 0:22:20Right, back out the front!

0:22:20 > 0:22:24Wisely, the boys send Charlie back to cement mixing duties.

0:22:26 > 0:22:28She and Harry need to finish the patio.

0:22:29 > 0:22:32The boys have opted for buff-coloured

0:22:32 > 0:22:34and slightly textured slabs.

0:22:34 > 0:22:37This way, when the twins are older, they won't slip on them.

0:22:37 > 0:22:43- How would you like your mix, sir? - Perfect.- Perfect, that's helpful.

0:22:43 > 0:22:47This new patio will immediately open up the lower half of the garden.

0:22:47 > 0:22:50While the kids roll around on the grass,

0:22:50 > 0:22:53Jenna and Craig can be relaxing with a coffee right next to them.

0:22:57 > 0:22:58It's fun this, isn't it?

0:22:58 > 0:23:01Watching someone else work, it's always a good thing.

0:23:01 > 0:23:04- I like these slabs. - They're nice, it's just concrete.

0:23:04 > 0:23:07It's just concrete, I know, but they look quite high-end, don't they?

0:23:07 > 0:23:09I think the key is to butt them up against...

0:23:09 > 0:23:11Don't give them a massive pointed space

0:23:11 > 0:23:13around the outside, and therefore

0:23:13 > 0:23:15it has a slightly more contemporary feel.

0:23:15 > 0:23:18- Rather than cottagey. - Rather than oldey-worldey.- Mm-hm.

0:23:20 > 0:23:23But with the budget being what it is, there are no spares.

0:23:25 > 0:23:28Got to ration you cos there's so few of them.

0:23:28 > 0:23:31Not one that can we break.

0:23:32 > 0:23:34Who says gardening wasn't fun?

0:23:34 > 0:23:38The patio is actually being laid on a slight incline.

0:23:38 > 0:23:41With the British weather, it's going to be rained on at some point

0:23:41 > 0:23:43and the water will need to run off.

0:23:44 > 0:23:47We're letting it run off into the lawn.

0:23:47 > 0:23:50But you know, you make the fall to the side,

0:23:50 > 0:23:52have a bit of gravel so there's a natural bit of drainage.

0:23:52 > 0:23:55But always think of that because you don't want a bit of puddling.

0:23:55 > 0:23:59- Puddling, no. - It ruins the nice paved area.

0:23:59 > 0:24:01- Better get on with this. - Yeah, before it goes off.

0:24:05 > 0:24:10- How is it going?- Yeah, slow. Actually, now that's better.

0:24:10 > 0:24:13- You're getting the run of it now. - Takes a while, doesn't it?

0:24:13 > 0:24:15I thought the boys were in charge of this garden.

0:24:15 > 0:24:17By the time you've finished the patio,

0:24:17 > 0:24:19you might know what you're doing.

0:24:20 > 0:24:22The key to anything in life, isn't it?

0:24:23 > 0:24:26Meanwhile, David and brickie Joe are going great guns.

0:24:28 > 0:24:30The first course has been put in

0:24:30 > 0:24:33with a 10mm mortar gap between the bricks.

0:24:33 > 0:24:36Next, they need to build the corners up.

0:24:36 > 0:24:38We build this corner up to the desired height,

0:24:38 > 0:24:40which we're hoping to get to.

0:24:40 > 0:24:42It's about this high for the third step.

0:24:42 > 0:24:44- Then we'll go to that side, we will build that corner up.- OK.

0:24:44 > 0:24:46To this height as well.

0:24:46 > 0:24:48Get the heights all worked out on the edges

0:24:48 > 0:24:51- and then just fill in the middle. - Fill it in the middle, yes.- Oh.

0:24:51 > 0:24:54- Sounds easy, doesn't it? - Yeah.- In theory.

0:24:54 > 0:24:55Just like doing Lego as a kid.

0:24:57 > 0:24:58Look at that.

0:24:59 > 0:25:03To fit in with such a small budget, the boys went for bricks,

0:25:03 > 0:25:07a great economical material that comes in all types of colours.

0:25:08 > 0:25:10But brick isn't the only material you have to use.

0:25:10 > 0:25:12You can use stone if you got a slightly higher budget.

0:25:12 > 0:25:15Sleepers, that's probably about the same budget.

0:25:15 > 0:25:17Or even upright timbers, and that's probably the cheapest way.

0:25:18 > 0:25:23But with only one course done, there's another five to do.

0:25:23 > 0:25:24What's first then?

0:25:24 > 0:25:27Fed up with her supervising their design,

0:25:27 > 0:25:30the boys have set Charlie a challenge.

0:25:30 > 0:25:33There's no money in the one grand budget for furniture,

0:25:33 > 0:25:35so they want her to improvise.

0:25:36 > 0:25:40- Like a little coffee table type affect.- Yeah.

0:25:40 > 0:25:45- So, about that sort of height?- Yes. - So you know, that would be...

0:25:45 > 0:25:48- That would be perfect. - That would be all right.- OK.

0:25:48 > 0:25:50And then I'd like this bit to be a planter

0:25:50 > 0:25:52and then I want to timber that in.

0:25:52 > 0:25:55All that's left are the pallets that the bricks arrived on.

0:25:55 > 0:25:59So, with three pallets and a few screws to play with,

0:25:59 > 0:26:00she needs to work her magic.

0:26:02 > 0:26:05Then we'll have to cut that through the middle,

0:26:05 > 0:26:08which I think is going to have to be a job for the big boys' saw.

0:26:08 > 0:26:12- But these pallets are tough as old boots.- Gosh!

0:26:12 > 0:26:14- Fancy making it nice and strong. - I know.

0:26:14 > 0:26:17When you're trying to deconstruct, it's a nightmare.

0:26:20 > 0:26:22- 29.5. - It's still going to be too deep.

0:26:24 > 0:26:28- Do we need them to be that long?- No.- OK.

0:26:29 > 0:26:33Have we got a crowbar? These boys are just trying to slow me down.

0:26:36 > 0:26:38- Huh!- There we go.

0:26:38 > 0:26:42- Good work. Will that come out like that? There we go.- Right.

0:26:50 > 0:26:53Those boys, they went, "Just make a table, a quick little job."

0:26:56 > 0:26:58Agh!

0:26:59 > 0:27:02But it's quite fun taking your frustration out.

0:27:05 > 0:27:08- Oh, you... - SHE MUTTERS ANGRILY

0:27:10 > 0:27:13- Darn!- And it's doable.

0:27:18 > 0:27:2175 man hours for one bit of timber.

0:27:23 > 0:27:26- Right, are you ready for me to make a bit of noise, Charlie?- Oh, yeah.

0:27:26 > 0:27:27OK.

0:27:27 > 0:27:29SAW WHIRRS

0:27:31 > 0:27:35If he doesn't use this after this, I'm going to kill him!

0:27:35 > 0:27:40It may be frustrating, but with only £1,000 to play with,

0:27:40 > 0:27:43anything that can be built for free is a bonus in this garden.

0:27:44 > 0:27:46Ah.

0:27:51 > 0:27:54Hi-spec landscaping and expensive mature plants

0:27:54 > 0:27:56have their place in some gardens.

0:27:56 > 0:27:58But having little or no budget at all

0:27:58 > 0:28:01means coming up with creative solutions.

0:28:04 > 0:28:07Hulme Community Garden Centre in Manchester

0:28:07 > 0:28:10is the ultimate make-do and mend garden.

0:28:14 > 0:28:16It's cost us very, very little.

0:28:16 > 0:28:21Apart from a lot of energy and time from our fantastic volunteers

0:28:21 > 0:28:23of converting these materials

0:28:23 > 0:28:26into a garden which everyone's proud of.

0:28:27 > 0:28:29For the volunteers, it's never a case of

0:28:29 > 0:28:32out with the old and in with the new.

0:28:32 > 0:28:35I'm terrible for walking past skips and stopping

0:28:35 > 0:28:37and looking to see what's in there,

0:28:37 > 0:28:41because you're surprised every time at what people throw out.

0:28:42 > 0:28:44We've got boots that are planted up

0:28:44 > 0:28:48into pots with different types of grasses.

0:28:48 > 0:28:52We've got old hats that have been used to make

0:28:52 > 0:28:54liners for hanging baskets.

0:28:56 > 0:29:00Adding a splash of floral colour to your garden can be expensive.

0:29:00 > 0:29:05But there are alternative ways to avoid spending a fortune on plants.

0:29:05 > 0:29:07It's surprising how many people out there have a passion

0:29:07 > 0:29:13for gardening and they will quite willingly share plant seeds.

0:29:13 > 0:29:16It doesn't have to cost anything, you can go out and you can

0:29:16 > 0:29:17forage the streets of a city.

0:29:20 > 0:29:24This garden proves one man's trash is another man's treasure.

0:29:30 > 0:29:33And back in Stevenage, the money saved by using cheaper

0:29:33 > 0:29:37landscaping materials is going towards the planting.

0:29:40 > 0:29:43There are three planting beds in this garden.

0:29:43 > 0:29:47One next to the new lower patio, another on top of the retaining wall

0:29:47 > 0:29:50and the third on the slope that remains.

0:29:52 > 0:29:55So, some grass needs to be removed and digging done.

0:29:56 > 0:29:59- Hanging on, Dave.- Tell you what, it's tough, isn't it?

0:30:00 > 0:30:03Without the budget to continue the retaining wall all the way along,

0:30:03 > 0:30:05part of the slope has been left.

0:30:05 > 0:30:07We're going to plant this up and make this

0:30:07 > 0:30:10lovely kind of bed that works with the slope.

0:30:10 > 0:30:13And that's going to work well for two reasons.

0:30:13 > 0:30:15One, it covers this manhole, and the other,

0:30:15 > 0:30:19it's going to give her this lovely interest all throughout the year.

0:30:20 > 0:30:23Planting on a slope has issues.

0:30:23 > 0:30:26It's dryer on top and wetter on the bottom,

0:30:26 > 0:30:29so the right plants need to be put in the right spot.

0:30:29 > 0:30:31And then we've got some other ones as well,

0:30:31 > 0:30:33drought-tolerant ones for the top of the slope.

0:30:33 > 0:30:35We've got echinacea, salvias and geraniums.

0:30:35 > 0:30:37And then this pretty guy, anchusa.

0:30:37 > 0:30:39And this is a bit more moisture-loving.

0:30:39 > 0:30:41So, he's going to go down the bottom there.

0:30:41 > 0:30:44- It's a good lovely colour. - Little bit of a punch.- Yes.

0:30:44 > 0:30:47In the front, Charlie's outdoor coffee table

0:30:47 > 0:30:48is starting to take shape.

0:30:50 > 0:30:51- Whoo!- Hey, that's all right!

0:30:51 > 0:30:53- Precision cutting.- Look at that!

0:30:54 > 0:30:58So, it's basically going to be...

0:30:59 > 0:31:01- Like that type of thing, isn't it? - Yeah.

0:31:03 > 0:31:06- And then we'll put planting in here. - Yes.

0:31:06 > 0:31:09- Might even put planting in there and plant in there.- Yeah.- Yeah.

0:31:13 > 0:31:17I hope Harry's made sure that the patio is nice and a level,

0:31:17 > 0:31:19don't want our nice level table to be wobbly.

0:31:20 > 0:31:21And that's definitely in.

0:31:23 > 0:31:26Lovely.

0:31:26 > 0:31:27Awesome!

0:31:30 > 0:31:33A few days sun has made the ground bone dry.

0:31:35 > 0:31:38Right, do you reckon you're ready for some chicken poo?

0:31:38 > 0:31:40Some chicken...

0:31:40 > 0:31:41Right.

0:31:43 > 0:31:45So, it needs a little TLC.

0:31:48 > 0:31:50We're using chicken pellets

0:31:50 > 0:31:52rather than, like, garden compost or manure

0:31:52 > 0:31:54because it's going to hold better on the slope.

0:31:54 > 0:31:56It's lighter, it'll work into the cracks

0:31:56 > 0:31:58and it won't wash away with the water.

0:31:59 > 0:32:03But Charlie has a very important question for the bosses.

0:32:03 > 0:32:06- I've come with a technical question.- Oh.

0:32:06 > 0:32:09- The table, I'm going to paint it. - Are you?- Nice.

0:32:09 > 0:32:10And I was thinking red.

0:32:13 > 0:32:15- Huh? - SHE LAUGHS

0:32:18 > 0:32:21I guess you would like it urban grey.

0:32:21 > 0:32:23THEY LAUGH

0:32:23 > 0:32:28- Nicely rinsed. Erm, yeah, urbane grey, please.- Urban grey.

0:32:28 > 0:32:31- More grey than, like, slate. - Oh, you boys go mad, you do.

0:32:31 > 0:32:34- You're so wacky! - It's a safe option.

0:32:34 > 0:32:37Just make sure it's not too blue or slatey, though, all right? Grey.

0:32:37 > 0:32:40- Grey.- Grey? - Grey!- Off with you.- Cor!

0:32:41 > 0:32:45Out front, Charlie's table is taking shape.

0:32:45 > 0:32:46Ah, brilliant.

0:32:48 > 0:32:50Sit and enjoy the sun for a bit, I think.

0:32:50 > 0:32:52No, work to do.

0:32:55 > 0:32:58One of the other key challenges for the boys to tackle...

0:32:59 > 0:33:03..were the four manholes scattered around the garden.

0:33:03 > 0:33:07One has been cleverly incorporated into the new patio.

0:33:07 > 0:33:10What we've done is we've bought a recess manhole cover

0:33:10 > 0:33:11and we've put slabs inside,

0:33:11 > 0:33:14so it has this kind of seamless joint that runs.

0:33:14 > 0:33:16So, you can't really see that it's there

0:33:16 > 0:33:18but it's still really accessible.

0:33:18 > 0:33:22The other three will be camouflaged in amongst the new planting beds.

0:33:24 > 0:33:27I think it's really nice using the grasses around the manhole

0:33:27 > 0:33:29because they're going to grow up, aren't they?

0:33:29 > 0:33:33The main feature bed sits next to the new patio,

0:33:33 > 0:33:36so Jenna, Craig and the twins can enjoy their new flowers.

0:33:37 > 0:33:39Guys want some dust on it.

0:33:42 > 0:33:45We've chosen these plants to provide a year-round interest of colour.

0:33:45 > 0:33:48What we've got at the moment is we've got some of these,

0:33:48 > 0:33:51we've got the geranium Samobor and that's out and that's got

0:33:51 > 0:33:52a lovely deep purple flower.

0:33:52 > 0:33:54And then obviously the grasses are going to grow,

0:33:54 > 0:33:55they're going to fill out.

0:33:55 > 0:33:58And then later on in the season, we've got rudbeckia.

0:33:58 > 0:34:01But it's going to be a deep orange colour.

0:34:01 > 0:34:03Keep that life going, that warmth in the autumn.

0:34:09 > 0:34:11Got the salvia there.

0:34:11 > 0:34:13Nice. Smell it.

0:34:14 > 0:34:15- Beautiful.- Gorgeous.

0:34:17 > 0:34:19In just a few months, these younger plants

0:34:19 > 0:34:22will grow about 20 inches tall

0:34:22 > 0:34:25and really fill the bed with colour and fragrance.

0:34:26 > 0:34:28Another really nice thing to do around the seating area

0:34:28 > 0:34:30is to put plants in with some scent.

0:34:30 > 0:34:32You could use things like lavender or catmint

0:34:32 > 0:34:34and that would give the same effect.

0:34:36 > 0:34:40Charlie's table is nearly done, but the bosses aren't finished with her.

0:34:40 > 0:34:43Harry's got another project up his sleeve -

0:34:43 > 0:34:47a living wall picture frame to bring some life to the end of the garden.

0:34:50 > 0:34:53Hey, Charlie! Some lettuce and some sedums.

0:34:53 > 0:34:54Oh, they'll be great for this.

0:34:54 > 0:34:56- Really nice colours, aren't they? - They are.

0:34:56 > 0:35:00To make it, Charlie's using what's known as a planting pocket,

0:35:00 > 0:35:03which has a thick canvas with a membrane on the back.

0:35:03 > 0:35:05- They're a bit floppy, aren't they?- Yes.

0:35:05 > 0:35:08So, I think we're going to have to put it on some timber or something.

0:35:08 > 0:35:10What would be really nice, just to kind of finish them off

0:35:10 > 0:35:13- with a nice little framework. - So, you want a frame around it?

0:35:13 > 0:35:17This job's getting harder and harder. Just, where's that Adam?

0:35:17 > 0:35:20- Did I hear my name?- Yes!

0:35:20 > 0:35:22What do you require, my dear?

0:35:22 > 0:35:25- We were after your mitring skills.- Right.

0:35:25 > 0:35:28Harry's got a little overly enthusiastic

0:35:28 > 0:35:30with these planting pockets.

0:35:30 > 0:35:32He wants a frame round them now, like a picture frame.

0:35:32 > 0:35:35What do you think? Got enough wood around the place?

0:35:35 > 0:35:37I'm sure I can cobble something together for you.

0:35:40 > 0:35:44Meanwhile, the retaining wall is being backfilled to make it

0:35:44 > 0:35:45level with the old patio.

0:35:47 > 0:35:50Poor old Joe the brickie only came to build the wall

0:35:50 > 0:35:51and he's ended up shovelling soil.

0:35:58 > 0:36:00Charlie's second project of the day,

0:36:00 > 0:36:04the living wall picture frame, is progressing nicely.

0:36:04 > 0:36:07And this, we'll wrap these down round the sides like this, you see?

0:36:07 > 0:36:09You see how much work you're making us do?

0:36:09 > 0:36:11- It will be worth it in the end. - Will it?

0:36:13 > 0:36:17Using the offcuts from the pallets, Adam soon knocks them into shape

0:36:17 > 0:36:20to create a frame around the planting pocket.

0:36:20 > 0:36:22We're just going to put a screw in the wall and hang it

0:36:22 > 0:36:24like a picture, yeah?

0:36:24 > 0:36:25It's nice and simple.

0:36:27 > 0:36:29And add some trim around the top.

0:36:32 > 0:36:33And job done.

0:36:36 > 0:36:37Watch out, Dave.

0:36:38 > 0:36:40This is the moment.

0:36:42 > 0:36:47Living walls are a great way to bring life to vertical spaces,

0:36:47 > 0:36:49but do need a lot of watering.

0:36:49 > 0:36:51- SHE LAUGHS - I thought we'd go on that hook.

0:36:51 > 0:36:55- That is a clothes line hook, is it? - Yeah, that's a clothes line.

0:36:55 > 0:36:57- Look at that.- That looks good.

0:36:57 > 0:37:00I tell you, I think it looks really cool.

0:37:02 > 0:37:05So far, Charlie's been pretty much at the boys' beck and call,

0:37:05 > 0:37:07but she hasn't forgotten Jenna's request.

0:37:09 > 0:37:10Here we go, David.

0:37:10 > 0:37:14The plant that's going to finish the whole garden off.

0:37:14 > 0:37:15I've been waiting for that all day.

0:37:15 > 0:37:21- The apple tree from my design.- Yeah! Dammit.- So, over here, yeah?

0:37:21 > 0:37:23I think so, yeah. Where was it on yours?

0:37:23 > 0:37:27It was in this corner to help screen out some of the houses.

0:37:27 > 0:37:28Yes, perfect.

0:37:28 > 0:37:31Charlie's gone for a dual apple tree -

0:37:31 > 0:37:34an apple you can eat as well as cook with.

0:37:34 > 0:37:38And each spring with a new tree, for the first three or four years,

0:37:38 > 0:37:41it's a really good idea just to give them a general fertiliser,

0:37:41 > 0:37:45something like blood fish and bone or something along those lines.

0:37:45 > 0:37:47The team are on the home stretch.

0:37:47 > 0:37:51With two flowerbeds planted, there's just one more to do.

0:37:52 > 0:37:56- Right, guys.- Charlie. - We have two climbers. Passionflower.

0:37:56 > 0:37:58Love it, fantastic.

0:37:58 > 0:38:00It's going to be big and vigorous, more like a warm wall.

0:38:00 > 0:38:03- And trachelospermum. - Nicely scented.- Star jasmine.

0:38:03 > 0:38:07- Yes, very nicely scented and evergreen.- Perfect.

0:38:07 > 0:38:11- So, where do you want them?- I think this bad boy right by the patio.

0:38:11 > 0:38:14I think plants really make this garden come to life.

0:38:14 > 0:38:16- And it's really hidden the manhole covers well.- Yeah.

0:38:16 > 0:38:19That one looks really smart. Look at that, in there.

0:38:19 > 0:38:23It does, did you choose the urban grey surround on purpose?

0:38:23 > 0:38:25THEY LAUGH

0:38:25 > 0:38:26Damn that urban grey!

0:38:28 > 0:38:31- It's going to be... Sales will be rocketing.- I wish I was trendy, hey?

0:38:31 > 0:38:35- Oh, you are trendy, Charlie. - Yeah, I'm right on the edge, me.

0:38:39 > 0:38:41Now it's a subtle shade of grey,

0:38:41 > 0:38:44Charlie's coffee table is bang on trend.

0:38:45 > 0:38:49Just one job left to do - plant it up.

0:38:49 > 0:38:53So, we're going for herbs. Herbs, so I reckon rosemary at the back.

0:38:55 > 0:38:58Some parsley and chives and thyme.

0:38:58 > 0:39:01I might actually swap that cos that will trail as well.

0:39:01 > 0:39:05- Look at that.- Beautiful. - Oh, smell that, smell that!

0:39:06 > 0:39:11- Ooh!- Oh. That's really nice.- Hmm.

0:39:11 > 0:39:14Out of a couple of pallets, a few screws. All right.

0:39:16 > 0:39:17Good result.

0:39:18 > 0:39:20And it smells gorgeous.

0:39:28 > 0:39:32This has been the cheapest garden the team have created.

0:39:32 > 0:39:34- This is the moment of truth. - This is it!

0:39:34 > 0:39:36Ba-dum! Look at that!

0:39:36 > 0:39:38Look at that!

0:39:38 > 0:39:42And much of it has been built on honest sweat and inspiration.

0:39:43 > 0:39:46- Nice, yeah, about there. That's very cool.- Like that?

0:39:46 > 0:39:48But at last, it's done.

0:39:54 > 0:39:58This garden was small, uneven and on a slope.

0:39:58 > 0:40:01Scattered with manholes, it wasn't the most inviting of spaces.

0:40:03 > 0:40:07Now it's undergone a £1,000 transformation into a garden

0:40:07 > 0:40:12that's safe for the twins to play in and the parents to unwind in.

0:40:13 > 0:40:18By adding a retaining wall, the boys created a lower terrace.

0:40:18 > 0:40:23A new £300 patio has given Jenna and Craig an area to sit

0:40:23 > 0:40:26and while away the hours with the twins.

0:40:26 > 0:40:29The boys tackled the unsightly manhole covers

0:40:29 > 0:40:32by disguising them amongst the planting.

0:40:32 > 0:40:36But to conceal the one in the patio, they used a recessed manhole cover.

0:40:36 > 0:40:40Costing £70, it fits seamlessly into the landscaping.

0:40:41 > 0:40:45Three new flowerbeds have brought the garden to life.

0:40:45 > 0:40:48A beautiful planting scheme of grasses and perennials

0:40:48 > 0:40:53that cost around £300 will give the family year-round colour.

0:40:56 > 0:41:01And stolen from Charlie's design is the new apple tree.

0:41:01 > 0:41:03It's a reminder of Craig's childhood garden

0:41:03 > 0:41:06and something for his twins to call their own.

0:41:10 > 0:41:13And Charlie's added a bit of sparkle, livening up the wall

0:41:13 > 0:41:17with a planting pocket to draw your eye to the back of the garden.

0:41:17 > 0:41:21And finishing of the patio with their own little coffee table.

0:41:21 > 0:41:25Made entirely from recycled wood pallets, it didn't cost a penny.

0:41:27 > 0:41:29It's a lot for £1,000.

0:41:29 > 0:41:32But will it meet the clients' approval?

0:41:32 > 0:41:34Open your eyes.

0:41:34 > 0:41:35- Oh, wow!- Oh, wow.

0:41:35 > 0:41:38- Oh, that's brilliant. - That looks so different.

0:41:38 > 0:41:39That's really cool.

0:41:39 > 0:41:42- Is this the thing that Charlie made?- Yes!

0:41:42 > 0:41:46- Yeah, I like it.- Yeah, yeah. Your herbs, little upcycled table.

0:41:47 > 0:41:50- That's amazing.- Your manhole covers, there's one under here.

0:41:50 > 0:41:52- We've actually got a garden.- Yeah!

0:41:52 > 0:41:54They look very happy.

0:41:55 > 0:41:59And you can just see how this raised terrace bit has made this bit

0:41:59 > 0:42:01feel so much bigger. Yeah, it does actually, yeah.

0:42:01 > 0:42:03Yeah, it looks a much bigger garden, doesn't it?

0:42:03 > 0:42:05And all the plants are going to grow up.

0:42:05 > 0:42:07It's going to completely transform this summer.

0:42:07 > 0:42:09And the two manhole covers and the planting,

0:42:09 > 0:42:12when everything grows up, you won't even see those.

0:42:12 > 0:42:15- And it's nice that we've still got the lawn as well.- Yeah.

0:42:15 > 0:42:18- We've got this little picture frame. - So, what have we got here?

0:42:18 > 0:42:21That is sedum and lettuce. So it's just a picture frame.

0:42:21 > 0:42:23- Just a little fun thing to do. - That's cool.

0:42:23 > 0:42:25Can you imagine using it with the new family?

0:42:25 > 0:42:27- Definitely, yeah.- Yeah, definitely.

0:42:27 > 0:42:31I can imagine myself sitting there with a couple of beers, actually.

0:42:31 > 0:42:34- Definitely.- Most important, first off.- Oh, the kids as well!

0:42:34 > 0:42:36The kids as well, yeah. It's all about the kids.

0:42:36 > 0:42:38Oh, there he goes.

0:42:40 > 0:42:43What do you think, then?

0:42:43 > 0:42:45- Hey?- Oh, Doug!- Doug!

0:42:45 > 0:42:47Oh, God.

0:42:49 > 0:42:51Well, Doug seems to like it.

0:42:51 > 0:42:53- Yeah, just love it.- Yeah.

0:42:53 > 0:42:57Nice area to sit, love the plants. Yeah, love it.

0:42:57 > 0:43:00So, do Jenna and Craig think their cash was well spent?

0:43:00 > 0:43:03100%, yeah, absolutely.

0:43:03 > 0:43:05If we were to do it on our own...

0:43:05 > 0:43:07Yeah, we wouldn't be able to get anywhere near this.
