0:00:02 > 0:00:04With her can-do attitude, love of simple gardens
0:00:04 > 0:00:06- and decades of experience...- Hello!
0:00:06 > 0:00:09..Charlie Dimmock is one of Britain's best-loved gardeners.
0:00:09 > 0:00:12Looking good, boys.
0:00:12 > 0:00:15But the new kids on the gardening block are the Rich brothers.
0:00:15 > 0:00:17We want to be the brothers
0:00:17 > 0:00:19that change people's perceptions of gardens.
0:00:19 > 0:00:22Winners of multiple medals at the Chelsea Flower Show...
0:00:22 > 0:00:24- Oh, wow.- Oh, good turn. - That's amazing, isn't it?
0:00:24 > 0:00:30..the boys have become known for their dramatic outdoor spaces.
0:00:30 > 0:00:33Now these two different generations of gardening
0:00:33 > 0:00:34are going head-to-head.
0:00:34 > 0:00:38I know they've got a gold medal, but I can come up with a few ideas.
0:00:38 > 0:00:42They're meeting frustrated garden owners across the country...
0:00:42 > 0:00:45The photos made it look tiny. It is, isn't it?
0:00:45 > 0:00:48- I'm sure you've seen larger. - I don't know what to do with it.
0:00:48 > 0:00:52- ..and will each pitch them a design based on their needs...- Wow.
0:00:52 > 0:00:53..and budget.
0:00:53 > 0:00:56- It looks really exciting.- It doesn't look like it could be our garden.
0:00:56 > 0:00:58- The winner...- Woo.
0:00:58 > 0:00:59- Woo.- Yeah.
0:00:59 > 0:01:02..brings their design to life...
0:01:02 > 0:01:04- Hold on, hold on.- Sweet as a nut.
0:01:04 > 0:01:07..and the loser has to help them build it.
0:01:07 > 0:01:10Oh, I'm getting irritated now with sort of faffing around.
0:01:10 > 0:01:14- This is what happens...- Does he ever get irritating?- All the time.
0:01:14 > 0:01:19- ..when different styles collide... - Who chose these?- One, two, three.
0:01:19 > 0:01:22- This looks like your design.- Yeah. - Wa-hey!
0:01:22 > 0:01:26- ..to turn garden dreams into reality.- Wow.- Wow.
0:01:26 > 0:01:29- Open your eyes.- Wow.
0:01:29 > 0:01:31It's amazing.
0:01:31 > 0:01:32It's beautiful.
0:01:38 > 0:01:41So, whose garden will Charlie and the Rich brothers,
0:01:41 > 0:01:44be competing over today?
0:01:44 > 0:01:46We've heard from Christine and Clive.
0:01:46 > 0:01:49They're a retired couple, they've just moved into their new home.
0:01:49 > 0:01:51Oh, it looks brand spanking new, as well, doesn't it?
0:01:51 > 0:01:56Christine and Clive hail from Fleet, they met in 1969
0:01:56 > 0:02:00at a social club and have been happily married for 45 years.
0:02:01 > 0:02:03'Clive used to belong'
0:02:03 > 0:02:05to a club called 18+.
0:02:05 > 0:02:08'Well, it was a very, very hot summer,
0:02:08 > 0:02:10'so I suggested that a crowd'
0:02:10 > 0:02:13went up to the open-air theatre in Regent's Park,
0:02:13 > 0:02:15only one person turned up
0:02:15 > 0:02:18'and I've still got the programme upstairs framed'
0:02:18 > 0:02:20with the date on it.
0:02:20 > 0:02:22That was our first date.
0:02:23 > 0:02:26Four decades and five houses and gardens later,
0:02:26 > 0:02:29the couple have decided to scale down.
0:02:29 > 0:02:32'There was a big area in the garden in our last house.
0:02:32 > 0:02:37'We realised that the knees weren't going to particularly improve.
0:02:37 > 0:02:40- 'Knees and back.- And we wanted'
0:02:40 > 0:02:43a flat, easier to manage
0:02:43 > 0:02:45and easier to access garden.
0:02:45 > 0:02:48They moved into their new-built home five months ago
0:02:48 > 0:02:51and as they are the first residents,
0:02:51 > 0:02:54the garden is as the developers left it.
0:02:54 > 0:02:57Their previous garden used to be quite well-stocked -
0:02:57 > 0:02:58it was large, full of things...
0:02:58 > 0:02:59- CHARLIE LAUGHS - This one's not.
0:02:59 > 0:03:04- So, what a contrast. - One pot, two pot.
0:03:04 > 0:03:05Nothing.
0:03:07 > 0:03:10The couple are looking for a garden that works
0:03:10 > 0:03:12with their new pace of life.
0:03:12 > 0:03:16Christine likes a garden to potter in. She's definitely a potterer.
0:03:16 > 0:03:18As long as I can grow some tomatoes,
0:03:18 > 0:03:23some runner beans and a few herbs and salad staff - that's fine.
0:03:23 > 0:03:26And we want to be able to relax and have friends round
0:03:26 > 0:03:28and that's where I want to be able to have a snooze
0:03:28 > 0:03:29when it does get sunny.
0:03:29 > 0:03:32These guys love contemporary and they love the idea
0:03:32 > 0:03:36of having a bit more of an adult space with a real wow factor.
0:03:36 > 0:03:39Yeah, I bet you think you've got it sewn up, don't you?
0:03:39 > 0:03:43- I never think that... - I do contemporary so well.
0:03:44 > 0:03:48It's the openness and the light that we like from this house,
0:03:48 > 0:03:51which was one of the reasons why we bought it.
0:03:51 > 0:03:55What we want out of the garden is for it to be an extension
0:03:55 > 0:03:56of the house.
0:03:56 > 0:04:00But that's not all the team have to contend with.
0:04:00 > 0:04:04We live in quite close proximity to other people's homes.
0:04:04 > 0:04:10And as much as we love them, it would nice to have some privacy.
0:04:10 > 0:04:13But instant privacy in a garden that is so overlooked
0:04:13 > 0:04:15doesn't come cheap.
0:04:15 > 0:04:18We've allowed a budget of £7,000.
0:04:18 > 0:04:21It's quite a lot, but like you said, it's quite a blank canvas,
0:04:21 > 0:04:23so we're going to have to really bring everything.
0:04:23 > 0:04:25We've got a lot of scope, though.
0:04:25 > 0:04:28- I think these guys need a bit of zhoosh with their ideas.- Yeah.
0:04:28 > 0:04:32- Have you got a lot of zhoosh, have you?- Oh, tons of it.
0:04:32 > 0:04:35This garden may have a healthy budget,
0:04:35 > 0:04:37But with not much else in there, the team have to give them
0:04:37 > 0:04:41everything and starting from scratch will be costly.
0:04:43 > 0:04:47With a garden challenge in hand, Charlie and the brothers are heading
0:04:47 > 0:04:51to Fleet to find out how Christine and Clive see the garden...
0:04:52 > 0:04:55So, here's the garden.
0:04:55 > 0:04:57..and to assess how the look of their house
0:04:57 > 0:04:59could influence their design.
0:05:00 > 0:05:01It's nice and light in here, isn't it?
0:05:01 > 0:05:04- Very nice, yeah.- Quite clean, quite modern.- Yeah, definitely.
0:05:04 > 0:05:10- Not a lot is going on, Clive, is there?- Not a lot.- A bare canvas.
0:05:10 > 0:05:13- Hmm. Cos you've not been here that long, have you?- No.
0:05:13 > 0:05:17- So this is quite exciting to you? - It is very exciting,
0:05:17 > 0:05:23very exciting, but also quite scary having such a flat, blank square.
0:05:23 > 0:05:25- It is very flat.- Where do you start?
0:05:25 > 0:05:27See, that's my feeling.
0:05:27 > 0:05:29This is a really lovely piece of furniture,
0:05:29 > 0:05:31- the warmth of the wood... - It is nice.
0:05:31 > 0:05:34Really modern, really contemporary style with the horizontal slats.
0:05:34 > 0:05:36Definitely use this in, like, a screening.
0:05:36 > 0:05:37Or maybe, like, raised beds,
0:05:37 > 0:05:40something like that would give a really nice, contemporary detail.
0:05:40 > 0:05:42I think that the style is a little...
0:05:42 > 0:05:45We would like it a little bit more formal, little bit more structured.
0:05:45 > 0:05:48But one of the things I think would be lovely
0:05:48 > 0:05:50is to have something with a wow factor.
0:05:50 > 0:05:53I feel we need a little shady area, somewhere to sit,
0:05:53 > 0:05:56because it is a south-facing garden.
0:05:56 > 0:05:59But hopefully an area out here where we can eat as well.
0:05:59 > 0:06:02So, I kind of get this...it needs to be quite uncluttered...
0:06:02 > 0:06:05- Yeah.- ..quite modern.- Mm-hm. - Everything kind of has a reason,
0:06:05 > 0:06:08cos everything here is kind of located nicely, isn't it?
0:06:10 > 0:06:13So, we're saying formal, contemporary, wow factor,
0:06:13 > 0:06:17socialising area, but to blank out some of the houses a bit
0:06:17 > 0:06:19and a bit to do in the garden.
0:06:19 > 0:06:21- Yeah.- You've got it in one.
0:06:22 > 0:06:24Well, that's the brief.
0:06:27 > 0:06:30Now it's time for Charlie and the boys to get creative.
0:06:32 > 0:06:35They each have to come up with a design
0:06:35 > 0:06:37for Christine and Clive's garden,
0:06:37 > 0:06:41then pitch it to the couple who will choose a winning design to be built.
0:06:42 > 0:06:45But it's not over for the loser as they'll be at the beck and call
0:06:45 > 0:06:49of the winner, helping them bring their design to life.
0:06:52 > 0:06:57Charlie's passion for flora may appeal to gardener Christine and her
0:06:57 > 0:07:00- love of pottering in the garden. - This is exciting.
0:07:01 > 0:07:04- Hello.- Hello, hello.- Hi.- Hi, guys.
0:07:04 > 0:07:08But the boys' more modern style could swing it in their favour.
0:07:08 > 0:07:11It's time for the big pitch.
0:07:11 > 0:07:13We realise that we needed to give you a very modern,
0:07:13 > 0:07:14very stylish garden,
0:07:14 > 0:07:17but that definitely draw on quite traditional values.
0:07:17 > 0:07:19So, something that had a balance between the two.
0:07:19 > 0:07:23So, the main features in this garden are the raised beds you can see here
0:07:23 > 0:07:26and they're made up of horizontal slatted wood,
0:07:26 > 0:07:28- similar to some of the features in your living room.- Yeah.
0:07:28 > 0:07:32So, that's just got a really nice, clean contemporary look.
0:07:32 > 0:07:34You've already got this one patch of area,
0:07:34 > 0:07:37but we wanted to give you one in the middle of the garden,
0:07:37 > 0:07:39so you really feel kind of surrounded by the garden.
0:07:42 > 0:07:45- Oh, wow.- Right.
0:07:45 > 0:07:49- Oh, I like that.- Wow.
0:07:49 > 0:07:53My feeling is to keep the garden very simple and structured.
0:07:53 > 0:07:58Now, this area here, this is the socialising area.
0:07:58 > 0:08:03This is a very chunky, simple deck, oak deck,
0:08:03 > 0:08:06so you would step up onto it.
0:08:06 > 0:08:10And this is a canal of water with a feature at the end,
0:08:10 > 0:08:11so it's shallow water,
0:08:11 > 0:08:15we can put dye in it to make it reflective like a mirror...
0:08:15 > 0:08:18- Wow.- ..which can look really wow. - I've never thought of that.
0:08:20 > 0:08:22The boys' design is very subtle,
0:08:22 > 0:08:26but Charlie's thrown everything at hers and it's going down well.
0:08:26 > 0:08:31But it's not over yet, the boys have answers to the privacy issue...
0:08:31 > 0:08:34We've located four different trees in this garden,
0:08:34 > 0:08:36which we feel will help with the privacy,
0:08:36 > 0:08:38juts by bringing the trees a little bit closer
0:08:38 > 0:08:40so that you can be amongst the trees,
0:08:40 > 0:08:44but when you look out, it completely blocks off the views
0:08:44 > 0:08:46from the upper windows of the houses.
0:08:46 > 0:08:49But Charlie's thought of that too.
0:08:49 > 0:08:53So, to screen out the bits that you don't want to see,
0:08:53 > 0:08:56I've got large shrubs around the perimeter,
0:08:56 > 0:09:00strategically placed and this is just a very straightforward,
0:09:00 > 0:09:02simple pergola
0:09:02 > 0:09:07so that the people behind here can't look in when you're sitting out.
0:09:07 > 0:09:11Both designers have also considered Christine's love of gardening.
0:09:13 > 0:09:16- We've got low topiarised box hedging.- Oh, right.
0:09:16 > 0:09:19- That's different.- And that sits on the outside of the raised beds
0:09:19 > 0:09:22and that's great because it softens it.
0:09:22 > 0:09:24- They're relatively easy to maintain as well?- Really easy.
0:09:24 > 0:09:26Yeah, good fun, you can cut it if you like,
0:09:26 > 0:09:28you can let it grow higher if you like.
0:09:28 > 0:09:30With the planting here...
0:09:30 > 0:09:33Lots and lots of box balls that we then interplant.
0:09:33 > 0:09:35Oh, I like that.
0:09:35 > 0:09:37Now, I've got them random, I quite like that.
0:09:37 > 0:09:40And then this is a raised bed.
0:09:40 > 0:09:42Now, I've left it all for vegetables.
0:09:42 > 0:09:44What looks quite amazing
0:09:44 > 0:09:47is mixing your vegetables with your ornamentals,
0:09:47 > 0:09:49- you can make a really... - I like that idea.
0:09:49 > 0:09:52Christine and Clive appear impressed,
0:09:52 > 0:09:55but they have some questions.
0:09:55 > 0:09:59So, how high would you say the topiary hedge is?
0:09:59 > 0:10:02- Head height.- Oh, that high? - No, I'm just joking.
0:10:02 > 0:10:06- No... Joking.- About 50cm... - It would take 20 years.
0:10:08 > 0:10:11It'll be about 40 to 50 centimetres. So, like, knee height.
0:10:11 > 0:10:14- That kind of thing. - Knee height.
0:10:14 > 0:10:18Paving slabs - they're an absolute pain to cut around.
0:10:18 > 0:10:21So, if possible, it would be great if that could be changed into
0:10:21 > 0:10:24a dedicated path without grass between...
0:10:24 > 0:10:27We can do that. Yes, that saves the budget even more,
0:10:27 > 0:10:30so we can spend it elsewhere.
0:10:31 > 0:10:34The pitch is over.
0:10:34 > 0:10:37Now it's up to Christine and Clive.
0:10:37 > 0:10:41And this, I would never have thought of having a long water feature.
0:10:41 > 0:10:43Very clever.
0:10:43 > 0:10:46Which obviously elongates the garden, so that's a very clever...
0:10:46 > 0:10:49A concern is the positioning of this pergola,
0:10:49 > 0:10:53because that would, in fact, not create very much shade.
0:10:53 > 0:10:55We can perhaps turn it round the other way?
0:10:55 > 0:10:57- I thought this was genius... - Stunning.
0:10:57 > 0:11:00..in terms of bringing these trees nearer to the house...
0:11:00 > 0:11:04- Exactly, rather than around the edge.- ..to create privacy.
0:11:04 > 0:11:08- And I love this way of doing the raised beds...- Yeah.
0:11:08 > 0:11:11- ..partly with the boxed... - But is there going to be enough...?
0:11:11 > 0:11:15- That seating area you can move... - Yeah.
0:11:15 > 0:11:17- ..in terms of where the shade is. - Yeah.
0:11:17 > 0:11:20The couple want a garden with the wow factor.
0:11:20 > 0:11:22So, which design has it?
0:11:22 > 0:11:27- Really difficult decision, how on earth do we decide?- Yeah.
0:11:27 > 0:11:31Will they go for the boys' formal, subtle design with extra patio,
0:11:31 > 0:11:34raised beds and trees for privacy?
0:11:34 > 0:11:37Or Charlie's chunky oak deck,
0:11:37 > 0:11:39contemporary water feature and topiary balls?
0:11:41 > 0:11:45So, so difficult, love them both. Really love them both.
0:11:45 > 0:11:49But at the end of the day, the one we have chosen is...
0:11:52 > 0:11:54- Ah, Charlie...- Nice. Well done.
0:11:54 > 0:12:01- Good, I get to do a water feature, yes! Your favourite.- Yeah, yeah.
0:12:01 > 0:12:04But Christine and Clive want to tweak Charlie's design.
0:12:04 > 0:12:08- We need to tweak the path a bit so...- And the pergola.
0:12:08 > 0:12:13And the pergola - that's just twist it round sun-wise.
0:12:13 > 0:12:15- But, yes... - But thank you both.
0:12:15 > 0:12:17And we get to see more of you, Charlie.
0:12:17 > 0:12:21- And the boys, I can't do it on my own.- And the boys, yes.
0:12:21 > 0:12:23Great. You make a great team.
0:12:32 > 0:12:35It's an early start for the team in Fleet.
0:12:37 > 0:12:40Charlie's away ordering some of the large plants that Clive and
0:12:40 > 0:12:44Christine's seven grand budget has enabled her to buy.
0:12:46 > 0:12:49So, it's down to project manager Kate and landscapers
0:12:49 > 0:12:51Scott, Adam and Mark to get on with the prep.
0:12:53 > 0:12:57Just marking out - no problems, just solutions.
0:12:57 > 0:12:59There's an awful lot of landscaping to do,
0:12:59 > 0:13:02so Charlie's made sure there's a digger on site to shoulder
0:13:02 > 0:13:06the heavy work...if they can get it into the garden.
0:13:08 > 0:13:11HE SPEAKS INDISTINCTLY
0:13:11 > 0:13:15To give the clients the wow factor they were looking for,
0:13:15 > 0:13:18Charlie has jam-packed her design with features.
0:13:20 > 0:13:24So, while Scott cracks on with digging out the water feature,
0:13:24 > 0:13:27Adam assembles a subframe for the rectangular deck.
0:13:29 > 0:13:31And we've got lovely hardwood.
0:13:31 > 0:13:33It's called balau, and it's really beautiful.
0:13:33 > 0:13:35Lovely red tinge.
0:13:35 > 0:13:37Because the plot is a rectangular shape,
0:13:37 > 0:13:40the boys don't have to create a bespoke deck.
0:13:40 > 0:13:45Charlie has ordered a kit of parts, so it should be an easier job.
0:13:45 > 0:13:49Oh, look at that. You've got lovely lines from the timbers.
0:13:49 > 0:13:52- OK.- Yeah, that's fine.- Down.
0:13:52 > 0:13:54- Beautiful.- Lovely, lovely.
0:13:56 > 0:13:59Charlie's water feature really caught Christine and Clive's eye.
0:13:59 > 0:14:02Situated towards the rear of the garden,
0:14:02 > 0:14:04this will be a real focal point.
0:14:06 > 0:14:09Charlie's opted to build a traditional rill
0:14:09 > 0:14:13but is planning to add a fountain at one end to create movement.
0:14:13 > 0:14:15It's really crucial to get your levels right
0:14:15 > 0:14:17when you're building a rill,
0:14:17 > 0:14:19otherwise the water will be all tipsy.
0:14:20 > 0:14:25And it's a big one - 1m wide and 4m long.
0:14:29 > 0:14:33- Superb.- We are there or thereabouts, all the way around.
0:14:34 > 0:14:37The next step is to reinforce the edges
0:14:37 > 0:14:39to keep the earth back.
0:14:39 > 0:14:41Because the hole will eventually be lined,
0:14:41 > 0:14:43it's fine to use cheaper breeze blocks.
0:14:43 > 0:14:46- Yeah, just...- Lovely, lovely.
0:14:50 > 0:14:53Out front, Charlie and the boys have just arrived.
0:14:53 > 0:14:56With such a heavy workload, they're just in the nick of time.
0:14:56 > 0:14:58This garden is a very simple design.
0:14:58 > 0:15:03It's all about blocks and squares and rectangles.
0:15:03 > 0:15:04What kind of planting?
0:15:04 > 0:15:06- We've got lots of box balls... - Oh, nice.
0:15:06 > 0:15:08..to go, and I don't know whether to arrange them
0:15:08 > 0:15:10in a dunk, dunk, dunk,
0:15:10 > 0:15:12- or random...- Ah.- Ooh! - ..with the rectangles.
0:15:12 > 0:15:14I like doing that. Can we do that bit?
0:15:14 > 0:15:16You want to do the box balls?
0:15:16 > 0:15:19- Yeah.- OK, so you're doing the water feature.- Yeah.
0:15:19 > 0:15:22You're going to do the path and you're going to do some planting.
0:15:22 > 0:15:23- Lovely.- Brilliant.
0:15:23 > 0:15:26- I'm going to do some decking. Sun's out.- Yeah.
0:15:26 > 0:15:29- What can go wrong?- Unless you add more things to our list.
0:15:29 > 0:15:31THEY LAUGH
0:15:33 > 0:15:36Whilst the boys consider the water feature,
0:15:36 > 0:15:38Charlie is onto the deck.
0:15:38 > 0:15:40But before any boards can go down,
0:15:40 > 0:15:44the framework needs to be put in place.
0:15:44 > 0:15:46- Do you want to just lift it across? - No.
0:15:46 > 0:15:50The boys have dug a trench in the lines of the subframe,
0:15:50 > 0:15:52so it will sit in the lawn,
0:15:52 > 0:15:56and have added a membrane to stop weeds coming through the gaps.
0:15:59 > 0:16:02Now it's ready for Charlie and Scott.
0:16:02 > 0:16:05Look at that decking. Ooh.
0:16:05 > 0:16:07We've got a slight fall on there,
0:16:07 > 0:16:09so it disperses the water off the edge of the boards.
0:16:09 > 0:16:12- Because the boards aren't grooved. - They're not. They're flat hardwood.
0:16:12 > 0:16:15They're flat, which will look really smart.
0:16:15 > 0:16:17This is going to be very instant, isn't it?
0:16:17 > 0:16:19It's going to come through very quickly, yeah.
0:16:19 > 0:16:22- Bomp, bomp, bomp. - Instant dance floor.
0:16:22 > 0:16:25SHE LAUGHS
0:16:25 > 0:16:29The channel for the water rill has been dug and lined with sand,
0:16:29 > 0:16:30so it's ready for the liner.
0:16:30 > 0:16:34- Oh, it smells.- Smells lovely. Takes us back to the surfing days.
0:16:34 > 0:16:37HE LAUGHS
0:16:37 > 0:16:39But Charlie has had an idea on how
0:16:39 > 0:16:43she can make this garden feel personal to Christine and Clive.
0:16:43 > 0:16:46The rill has been designed to have a fountain at one end,
0:16:46 > 0:16:49so they've been on a shopping trip.
0:16:49 > 0:16:52Oh, look at that. Look at that handsome beast.
0:16:52 > 0:16:54..queen of water features.
0:16:54 > 0:16:57The queen of water features. I heard my name. OK.
0:16:57 > 0:17:00So, I have to say, that is pretty full-on, isn't it?
0:17:00 > 0:17:03- Yeah.- So, I would put it about there.
0:17:03 > 0:17:06- CHRISTINE:- To go into the... - So, that...that... So, you see...
0:17:06 > 0:17:09- Yeah.- ..from there, but also from your decking.
0:17:09 > 0:17:11- Yeah, yeah.- So, from both ways. - Yeah.
0:17:11 > 0:17:13And you'll see the water dropping.
0:17:13 > 0:17:16- Yes.- Oh, what a good idea.- We need to fill it up first, don't we?
0:17:16 > 0:17:18- DAVID:- Well, we need to put a liner in it first.
0:17:18 > 0:17:21- Stop distracting us, you two. - Yeah, we need to get on.
0:17:22 > 0:17:25Meanwhile, Adam and Scott are putting edging in for a path.
0:17:26 > 0:17:29That's it. Good work. Lovely.
0:17:29 > 0:17:32Charlie has created two paths to link the different features
0:17:32 > 0:17:33to the existing patio,
0:17:33 > 0:17:36creating a journey around the garden.
0:17:36 > 0:17:40Clive wasn't keen on slabs, so she's using gravel.
0:17:43 > 0:17:44Over at the water feature,
0:17:44 > 0:17:47the boys need to crack on with fixing the liner.
0:17:47 > 0:17:49Beautiful.
0:17:50 > 0:17:52The trickiest bits are the corners,
0:17:52 > 0:17:56so they're tiding them up like the corners of a bedsheet.
0:17:56 > 0:17:59Yeah, this is good here as well. Just pulling it a little bit.
0:17:59 > 0:18:02Final adjustments to make it nice and neat
0:18:02 > 0:18:04can be done when it's full of water.
0:18:11 > 0:18:14- This is coming on well, isn't it? - Yeah.- It's good.- Cracking on.
0:18:14 > 0:18:17The timber edging is down,
0:18:17 > 0:18:19but there seems to be a difference of opinion.
0:18:19 > 0:18:21We also put the timber heads along
0:18:21 > 0:18:23with some nice membrane in the bottom.
0:18:23 > 0:18:26Mem... No. No, no, no. Not membrane in the bottom.
0:18:26 > 0:18:28- You've got to have membrane in the bottom.- Why?- No.
0:18:28 > 0:18:31- Stop the weeds coming up. - No, but it comes up.- No.
0:18:31 > 0:18:36Looks like Charlie needs the clients' input again.
0:18:36 > 0:18:37Clive!
0:18:37 > 0:18:41- So, you've got me to change the paving.- Yes.- I just...
0:18:41 > 0:18:43- THEY LAUGH - All right. Tools out.
0:18:43 > 0:18:46- Not that we're ganging up against the boys...- Tools out.
0:18:46 > 0:18:48- ..but... So, this is the gravel path.- Yes.
0:18:48 > 0:18:51The boys would like to put membrane down.
0:18:51 > 0:18:54- Oh. Mm. - But when you walk on it on gravel,
0:18:54 > 0:18:57it comes up through and all that black will come to the surface.
0:18:57 > 0:18:59You might have to pull out the odd weed.
0:18:59 > 0:19:02- But is that the guarantee that you're able to offer?- No.
0:19:03 > 0:19:08So, Clive, no pressure. Is it membrane or no membrane?
0:19:08 > 0:19:10So, if we can just put down weedkiller
0:19:10 > 0:19:13and that's going to resolve the problem, yes.
0:19:13 > 0:19:15- Right answer. Good. - Excellent.- Sorry, guys.- Sorted.
0:19:15 > 0:19:17Excellent. Thank you, Clive.
0:19:17 > 0:19:20- We'll get back to work, then.- Might as well pack up tools, then, lads.
0:19:20 > 0:19:22- We're going home. - I'm sorry about that, guys.
0:19:22 > 0:19:25- HE GRUNTS - I'll take the small one, shall I?
0:19:25 > 0:19:27Why does it always seem to work that way?
0:19:27 > 0:19:29It's all timing, David. It's all timing.
0:19:29 > 0:19:32All right, well, that's the way to attack there.
0:19:35 > 0:19:39Over at the deck, Charlie and Scott have made up
0:19:39 > 0:19:42and are ready to lay the first decking boards.
0:19:42 > 0:19:46- So, the first one has got to be spot on, hasn't it?- It has, yes.
0:19:46 > 0:19:50Charlie opted for a smooth, luxurious hardwood deck.
0:19:50 > 0:19:51Hailing from Asia,
0:19:51 > 0:19:55it adds that little touch of exotic glamour to the garden.
0:19:55 > 0:19:57People worry about decking that hasn't got grooves in
0:19:57 > 0:19:59because it'll be slippery,
0:19:59 > 0:20:02but this has an antifungal property to it,
0:20:02 > 0:20:06so it means it doesn't get slippery as long as you oil it once a year.
0:20:07 > 0:20:11Although a hardwood deck is more expensive than softwood,
0:20:11 > 0:20:13it weathers well and could potentially have
0:20:13 > 0:20:15up to double the life span.
0:20:17 > 0:20:19Using hardwood screws,
0:20:19 > 0:20:23Scott leaves a 4mm gap to allow for any swelling of the boards.
0:20:23 > 0:20:27- Sure that's in the right place? - It is in the right place, thank you.
0:20:27 > 0:20:28I'm just teasing!
0:20:28 > 0:20:30And with Charlie being at the helm,
0:20:30 > 0:20:33she has a word of caution for everyone.
0:20:35 > 0:20:37Right. You do all know there's no walking on this deck
0:20:37 > 0:20:38once it's down?
0:20:40 > 0:20:43- The dance floor, isn't it? - Dragon wagon's talking!
0:20:44 > 0:20:48She's a tough boss, Charlie, but a caring one too.
0:20:48 > 0:20:54The sun has been belting down all day, so she's being mother hen.
0:20:54 > 0:20:56We have got hats for the boys.
0:20:56 > 0:20:58Do you want to see the boys in their hats?
0:20:58 > 0:21:00So, Scott's hat is very dapper.
0:21:04 > 0:21:07- Oh, cheers, Mum. - That looks much better.
0:21:07 > 0:21:10- Have you got some sunblock for my neck as well?- Yes.
0:21:10 > 0:21:12And where's the other little boy?
0:21:12 > 0:21:15With the flower facing? Damn. Why is Harry getting the good one?
0:21:15 > 0:21:18Good. Covers your ears, the back of your neck.
0:21:18 > 0:21:21Actually reminds me of Nan a little bit.
0:21:25 > 0:21:27Cooking on gas here.
0:21:30 > 0:21:33Christine loves to potter in the garden.
0:21:34 > 0:21:36Right, let's get the sleeper, Harry. Come on.
0:21:36 > 0:21:39So she doesn't have to bend down all the time,
0:21:39 > 0:21:42Charlie has designed three raised beds.
0:21:42 > 0:21:44One runs parallel to the water feature.
0:21:44 > 0:21:46- That's the path. - That's the path, that is, mate.
0:21:46 > 0:21:48Oh, is that actually the path?
0:21:48 > 0:21:50So, we're going outside that far edge, basically.
0:21:50 > 0:21:53Should have looked at Charlie's design.
0:21:53 > 0:21:55THEY LAUGH
0:21:55 > 0:21:57Are you changing my design already, Harry?
0:21:57 > 0:22:00- Yeah. By mistake, though. - THEY LAUGH
0:22:00 > 0:22:03The bed will be around 70cm high
0:22:03 > 0:22:05and 1m wide -
0:22:05 > 0:22:08a nice sensible height that's easier on the back.
0:22:10 > 0:22:14I'll leave you boys to it. You know what you're doing.
0:22:14 > 0:22:16The boys start with the base,
0:22:16 > 0:22:20making sure it's good and solid and then building it up.
0:22:20 > 0:22:21OK, hold on, then.
0:22:21 > 0:22:24Yeah, it's good there, mate. That's lovely.
0:22:31 > 0:22:33Beautiful.
0:22:38 > 0:22:42Charlie has designed the beds to be just a metre wide,
0:22:42 > 0:22:45which also makes them easier to maintain.
0:22:45 > 0:22:48And the 1m bit is the key bit.
0:22:48 > 0:22:49You don't want to have your veg bed too wide
0:22:49 > 0:22:51and you can't reach the middle.
0:22:51 > 0:22:53Another great thing about raised beds
0:22:53 > 0:22:54is it's good for the back.
0:22:54 > 0:22:56You're not reaching or bending over, kneeling down.
0:22:56 > 0:22:57It's really manageable.
0:22:57 > 0:23:00All you need to do is refresh your soil with some good manure
0:23:00 > 0:23:02about once a year and the veg will love it.
0:23:02 > 0:23:04But there are still two more to do,
0:23:04 > 0:23:07and with the deck and the water feature not yet finished,
0:23:07 > 0:23:11the hard landscaping seems to be taking forever.
0:23:13 > 0:23:15So hot.
0:23:15 > 0:23:17Can't complain.
0:23:26 > 0:23:28Are we halfway yet?
0:23:28 > 0:23:31- Not quite. - SHE MOCKINGLY SOBS
0:23:31 > 0:23:34Charlie is getting frustrated, and there's more bad news.
0:23:34 > 0:23:37The boys are struggling with the raised beds.
0:23:37 > 0:23:40So, can you look down that side and just see if that's kind of flush
0:23:40 > 0:23:41with that, so we get it square?
0:23:41 > 0:23:43No. They must've come...
0:23:43 > 0:23:46The sleepers don't seem to be quite right.
0:23:48 > 0:23:50I mean, it's timber, at the end of the day.
0:23:50 > 0:23:53- Yeah, and you can't account for timber...- It's not the way...
0:23:53 > 0:23:55There's going to be some movement in it.
0:23:55 > 0:23:56I'll leave me little gap at the back end.
0:23:56 > 0:23:59- Stop slowing him down, you. - HE LAUGHS
0:23:59 > 0:24:00Sorry. Goodness me.
0:24:00 > 0:24:04What we're finding is that some of these timbers are either warped
0:24:04 > 0:24:08kind of basically banana-like, that way,
0:24:08 > 0:24:11so it just means you've got to screw them in together.
0:24:11 > 0:24:13And between the two, there's going to be three high,
0:24:13 > 0:24:16so what we're going to have to do on the inside,
0:24:16 > 0:24:18bracket them and then pull them together and screw them in.
0:24:20 > 0:24:23At least the decking is nearly finished.
0:24:23 > 0:24:29Last board! Only 28 screws to go!
0:24:29 > 0:24:31SHE LAUGHS
0:24:32 > 0:24:34Last two screws.
0:24:34 > 0:24:37Yes. Until we start the pergola.
0:24:40 > 0:24:43Yay! Woo!
0:24:43 > 0:24:46And the last deck board is down.
0:24:52 > 0:24:54The boys have conquered the raised beds
0:24:54 > 0:24:56and have moved back to the rill.
0:24:56 > 0:24:57Snug.
0:24:57 > 0:25:01Charlie has chosen limestone coping stones,
0:25:01 > 0:25:04and the boys are laying them an inch over the edge.
0:25:04 > 0:25:06So, what it does is it covers the lining
0:25:06 > 0:25:08so you see this lovely reflection of the stone texture
0:25:08 > 0:25:10instead of this,
0:25:10 > 0:25:13so it's a really smart way of finishing the water feature.
0:25:13 > 0:25:15Charlie has positioned the rill
0:25:15 > 0:25:17so it's in plain view from the kitchen.
0:25:17 > 0:25:20The ideal spot for any water feature
0:25:20 > 0:25:23is a site where the wind doesn't blow and it isn't too hot.
0:25:23 > 0:25:26A water feature like this obviously does require
0:25:26 > 0:25:28a bit more maintenance, but it's not too bad.
0:25:28 > 0:25:30At maybe the height of summer, full sun,
0:25:30 > 0:25:33you'd be looking at maybe topping up an inch a week at the most,
0:25:33 > 0:25:35so it doesn't require too much of your time.
0:25:37 > 0:25:40Charlie's still on landscaping duties.
0:25:40 > 0:25:43So that the deck is shaded on days like today,
0:25:43 > 0:25:44she and Adam are adding a pergola.
0:25:47 > 0:25:49Great thing about putting a pergola in
0:25:49 > 0:25:50is it adds the height,
0:25:50 > 0:25:52but it also means you can grow more plants.
0:25:52 > 0:25:55So, you can have trailing plants and climbing plants.
0:25:55 > 0:25:58- So, this is a kit one, isn't it, this pergola?- It is, yeah.
0:25:58 > 0:26:01We're making life simple, supposedly.
0:26:01 > 0:26:03- Supposedly, yeah. - SHE LAUGHS
0:26:03 > 0:26:05Just got to get everything the right height first
0:26:05 > 0:26:06- and then we'll be all right.- OK.
0:26:11 > 0:26:15On the hottest summer days, shade is essential in the garden,
0:26:15 > 0:26:19so it pays to know the position of the sun in relation to your plot,
0:26:19 > 0:26:22particularly if you're planning a seating area for morning coffee
0:26:22 > 0:26:26or a dining area for afternoon or evening get-togethers.
0:26:28 > 0:26:31Trees or tall shrubs offer natural shade
0:26:31 > 0:26:36but need to have a wide and dense canopy to be effective.
0:26:36 > 0:26:40Wooden pergolas or pagodas have the natural feel of a tree,
0:26:40 > 0:26:45and come in shapes and sizes to fit any style of garden.
0:26:45 > 0:26:48But the frame only offers partial shade,
0:26:48 > 0:26:51so consider the growth rate of what you climb up it
0:26:51 > 0:26:53if you're going to rely on it for protection.
0:26:55 > 0:26:57If your taste is contemporary,
0:26:57 > 0:27:01than nothing beats a dramatic sail shade for the wow factor.
0:27:01 > 0:27:05They come in all colours but will need regular cleaning
0:27:05 > 0:27:08if you want to maintain that boutique hotel look.
0:27:11 > 0:27:15In Fleet, Adam is screwing the post for Charlie's pergola
0:27:15 > 0:27:19into the subframe just to get the positioning spot on.
0:27:19 > 0:27:23He'll then add postcrete to the hole so it's solid as a rock.
0:27:23 > 0:27:26- I'll get the screw started.- Yeah, cos I've just moved that totally.
0:27:30 > 0:27:33- Right. You tell me when you think we're about there.- Hold on, hold on.
0:27:33 > 0:27:37- Give a girl a chance. Good.- Yeah?- Go, quick.
0:27:42 > 0:27:46At last, the back of the hard landscaping has been broken,
0:27:46 > 0:27:49so Charlie wastes no time in getting the brothers
0:27:49 > 0:27:51straight onto planting trees.
0:27:51 > 0:27:54- Oh, yes.- Loving the size of these. - So...
0:27:54 > 0:27:57- Wow.- Oh! Ooh!
0:27:57 > 0:27:59- So, we have our lovely hawthorn. - Yeah.
0:27:59 > 0:28:02- And prunus serrula.- Crimson cloud. - Crimson cloud.- She's mine.
0:28:02 > 0:28:05I'm thinking over there.
0:28:05 > 0:28:07- For Dave.- What's this? What's this?
0:28:07 > 0:28:11- Prunus serrula. - Oh, that will be lovely.
0:28:11 > 0:28:16Christina and Clive's garden is overlooked on three sides.
0:28:16 > 0:28:19- Put the Chinese sorbus here.- Yeah.
0:28:19 > 0:28:21Yeah, because it'll block that house out.
0:28:21 > 0:28:23So, Charlie is planting ornamental trees
0:28:23 > 0:28:25that won't grow too big
0:28:25 > 0:28:28and will also add some much needed shade to the garden.
0:28:28 > 0:28:30Bring the alder forward a bit.
0:28:32 > 0:28:34Alder forward!
0:28:35 > 0:28:38Quite a lot. Don't be shy.
0:28:40 > 0:28:43- Happy with that.- Nice.- Cool.
0:28:43 > 0:28:46One of the big selling points of Charlie's design
0:28:46 > 0:28:49were the billowing clouds of box that she proposed
0:28:49 > 0:28:50for the left-hand border,
0:28:50 > 0:28:53and it's time they made an appearance.
0:28:54 > 0:28:57So, we've got very large ones.
0:28:57 > 0:28:59I've got this one that I'm going to leave shaggy,
0:28:59 > 0:29:01so we've got a couple of shaggy ones
0:29:01 > 0:29:03because I like the different textures.
0:29:03 > 0:29:07You can buy various shapes and sizes of topiary off the shelf,
0:29:07 > 0:29:09but if there's a specific shape you like,
0:29:09 > 0:29:12you can have great fun creating your own.
0:29:12 > 0:29:16People get quite confused about how far you need to cut them back.
0:29:16 > 0:29:19You don't need any fancy clippers.
0:29:19 > 0:29:22You can quite happily use
0:29:22 > 0:29:25a good pair of scissors or sequiturs,
0:29:25 > 0:29:28and just follow the shape and just sort of press on it
0:29:28 > 0:29:30and you just know that that's far enough back
0:29:30 > 0:29:32because there's some resistance.
0:29:32 > 0:29:35The boys were itching to get their hands on the balls,
0:29:35 > 0:29:39but Charlie wants the trees planted first.
0:29:39 > 0:29:41Get them in.
0:29:42 > 0:29:45Harry is planting a golden alder.
0:29:45 > 0:29:47With beautiful autumn and winter colour,
0:29:47 > 0:29:50it can reach up to 12m high.
0:29:50 > 0:29:51Alders are one of my favourite trees
0:29:51 > 0:29:55because sometimes the simplest things look the best.
0:29:57 > 0:29:59- That works, doesn't it? - That's nice.- It looks textured.
0:29:59 > 0:30:01What about my hawthorn? Do you like it?
0:30:01 > 0:30:03Yeah, that's a good-looking tree.
0:30:03 > 0:30:05So, it's closely related to the native hawthorn,
0:30:05 > 0:30:09but it's the fancier version with the lovely strong, pink flowers.
0:30:09 > 0:30:12- It's great, isn't it? - It is pretty strong. Pretty bold.
0:30:14 > 0:30:17Charlie is also adding some large shrubs
0:30:17 > 0:30:20that will be easier for Christine and Clive to manage than perennials
0:30:20 > 0:30:23and will provide some year-round interest.
0:30:24 > 0:30:27Going to try and cover this wall up a bit with these evergreens,
0:30:27 > 0:30:30so, you know, we've got this viburnum tinus...
0:30:30 > 0:30:32Yeah. And this guy, this pittosporum, is my favourite.
0:30:32 > 0:30:35- Yeah?- It's gorgeous. Got a lovely, simple leaf, isn't it?
0:30:35 > 0:30:37See, I like the garrya elliptica.
0:30:37 > 0:30:40Evergreen. It gets those great big long tassels on it. Tassel tree.
0:30:40 > 0:30:44- Oh, sounds horrific.- Horrific? - HE LAUGHS
0:30:44 > 0:30:46- No accounting for taste. - Look at that!
0:30:46 > 0:30:50Simple dark stem. Lovely green leaf. No variegation.
0:30:50 > 0:30:54You need educating, you boys do. You so do.
0:31:00 > 0:31:01With the trees in,
0:31:01 > 0:31:05the brothers have got their wish and are onto the box balls.
0:31:05 > 0:31:07- Oh, give me...- Like a glove.
0:31:07 > 0:31:09Give me a hand getting this one in, Harry,
0:31:09 > 0:31:11and then I'll...we can both fill them in.
0:31:11 > 0:31:13But towards the rear of the garden,
0:31:13 > 0:31:16there's a problem with the water feature.
0:31:16 > 0:31:18Is that heavy, that water feature?
0:31:18 > 0:31:21It's not really, but when it's full of water,
0:31:21 > 0:31:22it will be heavy.
0:31:22 > 0:31:25So, it will hold them down. I'll see what height it is.
0:31:25 > 0:31:28Scott has realised that when the water is turned off,
0:31:28 > 0:31:31the fountain will be too light and could float away.
0:31:37 > 0:31:39Is that good for the saw?
0:31:39 > 0:31:41- If it's someone else's saw... - Yeah, it's fine.
0:31:41 > 0:31:43..it's not a problem, but as it's mine...
0:31:43 > 0:31:46SHE LAUGHS
0:31:46 > 0:31:49So he places its base on top of some breeze blocks
0:31:49 > 0:31:52so it sits just above the water line.
0:31:52 > 0:31:56He'll then weigh it down to keep it firmly in place.
0:31:59 > 0:32:01In order to get the fountain to work,
0:32:01 > 0:32:03there's a new addition to the team.
0:32:03 > 0:32:07Electrician Kieran is not only wiring up the water feature,
0:32:07 > 0:32:11he's also been tasked with putting in a new lighting scheme.
0:32:11 > 0:32:14Christine and Clive were so taken with Charlie's planting plans,
0:32:14 > 0:32:18they insisted on some night-time illumination.
0:32:24 > 0:32:28Lighting can bring a whole new dimension to a garden.
0:32:28 > 0:32:32Designer Karena Batstone knows how to add some night-time drama
0:32:32 > 0:32:34to an outdoor space.
0:32:34 > 0:32:37During the day, you have no choice what's lit in a garden.
0:32:37 > 0:32:39Everything is lit.
0:32:39 > 0:32:41But at night, you have the opportunity
0:32:41 > 0:32:44to do something really exciting.
0:32:44 > 0:32:46The trick is to be subtle with your lighting.
0:32:46 > 0:32:50Think about the effect you want and where to position your lights.
0:32:53 > 0:32:56I like to use spike-mounted spotlights in the beds
0:32:56 > 0:32:58because you can move them around.
0:33:00 > 0:33:03If you use the fitting very close to the base of a wall,
0:33:03 > 0:33:06you'll pick up the texture of the wall.
0:33:06 > 0:33:08But don't forget about the practical issues
0:33:08 > 0:33:12and plan ahead if you can.
0:33:12 > 0:33:14If you're constructing a new garden,
0:33:14 > 0:33:17you need to think about where to put all the conduits,
0:33:17 > 0:33:20because you don't want to put down all your paving and discover
0:33:20 > 0:33:24that you've got some trailing lead going in an awkward place.
0:33:24 > 0:33:28So, it's very well worth planning garden lighting
0:33:28 > 0:33:31right from the start.
0:33:31 > 0:33:35If electric lights aren't practical, there are alternatives.
0:33:35 > 0:33:37Using your outdoor sockets,
0:33:37 > 0:33:41you can create an atmosphere for different occasions.
0:33:41 > 0:33:46So, a party, for instance, get the string lights out.
0:33:46 > 0:33:52And the other thing I would say is don't forget about candlelight.
0:33:52 > 0:33:57I think the nicest way to light a dining table is with candlelight.
0:34:02 > 0:34:06Back in Fleet, with the weight problem of the fountain sorted...
0:34:06 > 0:34:08That's better.
0:34:08 > 0:34:11..it just needs to be slotted into place.
0:34:11 > 0:34:14Still looks good from there, doesn't it?
0:34:14 > 0:34:16Happy with the water feature,
0:34:16 > 0:34:20Charlie is keen that momentum doesn't start flagging.
0:34:20 > 0:34:22- So, you need to square that off of...- Yeah, no problem.
0:34:22 > 0:34:24And what, there's a path on through there, is there?
0:34:24 > 0:34:27- There's a metre bed...- Yeah. - ..metre path...
0:34:27 > 0:34:30- Yeah.- ..so we'll timber-edge it. - Perfect.
0:34:30 > 0:34:32By then, those raised beds will be...
0:34:32 > 0:34:35And then that's flowerbed and raised bed.
0:34:39 > 0:34:43And she's powering on with planting up the raised veg bed.
0:34:43 > 0:34:50And I'm just enriching it with some well-rotted farmyard manure.
0:34:50 > 0:34:52It does make it nice and easy having them raised.
0:34:54 > 0:34:56These ones on there.
0:34:59 > 0:35:02And that one is going to be there.
0:35:03 > 0:35:08Peas...here.
0:35:08 > 0:35:10Charlie is planning to add some height
0:35:10 > 0:35:12by growing peas up wooden supports.
0:35:12 > 0:35:14So, I'm just going to do that with them, really.
0:35:19 > 0:35:21Pretty sure I might change it all in a minute.
0:35:21 > 0:35:23We've got a couple of tomatoes here.
0:35:23 > 0:35:25These are ones, a variety called roma,
0:35:25 > 0:35:27which are great for outside.
0:35:27 > 0:35:30And then we've got a couple of sweet peppers.
0:35:31 > 0:35:34Adding simple net will help keep birds or insects
0:35:34 > 0:35:37from eating your new crops, but Charlie has got another tip.
0:35:37 > 0:35:41You could also plant in here garlic and chives
0:35:41 > 0:35:43cos garlic and chives are really good companion planting
0:35:43 > 0:35:46because they attract lots of hover flies
0:35:46 > 0:35:48which then eat things like the aphids
0:35:48 > 0:35:50that would eat your vegetables.
0:35:50 > 0:35:54That's one raised bed planted up. Just two more to go.
0:35:57 > 0:35:59The day is passing by quickly,
0:35:59 > 0:36:01and although some of the team are planting,
0:36:01 > 0:36:04the hard landscaping just goes on and on.
0:36:07 > 0:36:11David's adding a 10cm top layer of white chippings
0:36:11 > 0:36:12to the path.
0:36:19 > 0:36:22And Charlie has asked the landscapers
0:36:22 > 0:36:24to extend the old patio by two rows
0:36:24 > 0:36:28so Christine and Clive can have a proper eating area
0:36:28 > 0:36:29just outside their kitchen.
0:36:31 > 0:36:35That size is sweet. That's flush on that corner there like that.
0:36:43 > 0:36:48Finally, the big moment. Time to turn the water fountain on.
0:36:57 > 0:36:59Should look pretty cool at night.
0:36:59 > 0:37:04The guys are on the home stretch, which means one thing...
0:37:04 > 0:37:06Is there one more box ball there?
0:37:06 > 0:37:07One here.
0:37:07 > 0:37:10..it's all hands on deck for the planting.
0:37:11 > 0:37:14Should look quite nice about there. Oops.
0:37:14 > 0:37:18And David is starting to regret taking on the box balls.
0:37:20 > 0:37:21Thank you.
0:37:21 > 0:37:25Charlie wanted to immerse Christine in her plants...
0:37:25 > 0:37:30Smells good. This will be a really lovely scented little area.
0:37:30 > 0:37:33..so as well as draping the pergola with climbers,
0:37:33 > 0:37:36she's placed two of the raised beds alongside the decking.
0:37:39 > 0:37:42We've got jasmine, salvias, lavender.
0:37:42 > 0:37:46We're going for, like, a blue, grey, silver effect
0:37:46 > 0:37:51that's going to slightly flop over and soften the raised borders.
0:37:51 > 0:37:53This area is in full sun,
0:37:53 > 0:37:56so Charlie has gone for drought-tolerant plants.
0:37:56 > 0:37:58And being in a raised bed,
0:37:58 > 0:38:01they'll be easy for Christine to maintain.
0:38:01 > 0:38:06So, silver foliage plants are really quite tolerant of drought,
0:38:06 > 0:38:08but once they're established,
0:38:08 > 0:38:10they will put up with really intense sun
0:38:10 > 0:38:12and really dry conditions,
0:38:12 > 0:38:15which actually makes the aromatic ones
0:38:15 > 0:38:17smell even stronger.
0:38:17 > 0:38:19The team are now at full throttle
0:38:19 > 0:38:22with just the last bit of planting to do.
0:38:24 > 0:38:28Got some salvias. Fandabadoozy!
0:38:28 > 0:38:30- Like that.- Yeah, perfect.
0:38:31 > 0:38:32Yeah, it really works.
0:38:38 > 0:38:42Yeah, I think it's absolutely amazing how much has been done.
0:38:42 > 0:38:44I mean, just, this is a completely different garden, isn't it?
0:38:44 > 0:38:46I think your brother is throwing
0:38:46 > 0:38:48the toys out of his pram at this precise moment.
0:38:48 > 0:38:49I was just getting it out of the bed.
0:38:49 > 0:38:52- How did that bearded iris get over there?- This one?
0:38:52 > 0:38:54- Yeah.- It was there.- It wasn't there. Doesn't matter.
0:38:54 > 0:38:57- Looks gorgeous.- Where's it supposed to be?- It's fine.
0:38:57 > 0:38:59- There was no space for it, so we wondered where...- That's fine.
0:39:01 > 0:39:04- Uh-oh. - HE LAUGHS
0:39:04 > 0:39:06Think it looks great there, mate.
0:39:09 > 0:39:11The main bed is finished.
0:39:11 > 0:39:14I'm out of here.
0:39:14 > 0:39:15No more planting.
0:39:17 > 0:39:21A quick tidy and the garden is done.
0:39:25 > 0:39:28Once just a flat square of grass,
0:39:28 > 0:39:30this garden was completely overlooked
0:39:30 > 0:39:32and lacked character and features.
0:39:35 > 0:39:41Now it's been brought to life with a £7,000 makeover.
0:39:41 > 0:39:45At the heart of Charlie's design was a beautiful hardwood deck.
0:39:45 > 0:39:50Sleek and stylish with a hint of red, it cost £1,400,
0:39:50 > 0:39:53but it should last for years.
0:39:53 > 0:39:56A pergola not only brings a little privacy
0:39:56 > 0:39:57when relaxing on the deck
0:39:57 > 0:40:01but adds much-needed height to the garden,
0:40:01 > 0:40:04underneath with scented plants like salvias and jasmine
0:40:04 > 0:40:06excite the senses.
0:40:09 > 0:40:13The tranquil water rill with its chrome fountain
0:40:13 > 0:40:15adds a relaxing sound to the garden.
0:40:20 > 0:40:24The quirky box balls add structure and form.
0:40:24 > 0:40:26They look great all year round
0:40:26 > 0:40:29and will be easy for Christine and Clive to maintain.
0:40:34 > 0:40:37Being a south-facing garden,
0:40:37 > 0:40:40Charlie has given the couple a shady woodland area.
0:40:42 > 0:40:45Once they grow to their full eight-metre height,
0:40:45 > 0:40:48a hawthorn and prunus serrula
0:40:48 > 0:40:50will screen the garden from the neighbours.
0:40:54 > 0:40:57And the boys have built three raised beds.
0:40:57 > 0:40:59Made from tanalised timber,
0:40:59 > 0:41:02they're ideal for growing plants and vegetables
0:41:02 > 0:41:03and are low-maintenance.
0:41:12 > 0:41:13..the step over.
0:41:13 > 0:41:18Christine and Clive dreamed of a garden that had the wow factor,
0:41:18 > 0:41:20so has Charlie delivered?
0:41:20 > 0:41:22I'm just going to sort of position you like that.
0:41:22 > 0:41:25Oh, about to open their eyes.
0:41:25 > 0:41:28- And you're allowed to open your eyes.- Wow.
0:41:28 > 0:41:31- Wow!- Look at that.
0:41:31 > 0:41:34Loads of wows. That's good.
0:41:34 > 0:41:37- I love that, in particular. - Fantastic!
0:41:37 > 0:41:39Just to say, you can't walk on the paving, Clive.
0:41:39 > 0:41:42- Right, OK. - So, come this way.- Super.
0:41:42 > 0:41:44- Wow.- Absolutely super.
0:41:44 > 0:41:46So, we're very pleased with the deck,
0:41:46 > 0:41:47because it does look top-notch.
0:41:47 > 0:41:51- Oh, it looks beautiful. - Oh, doesn't that look smashing?
0:41:51 > 0:41:53- And I love the plants.- Yeah. Yeah.
0:41:53 > 0:41:56And of course, this is sufficient space where we can even dance.
0:41:56 > 0:41:59Oh, OK. Hello. Let the gentleman lead.
0:41:59 > 0:42:03- THEY LAUGH - Woo!
0:42:03 > 0:42:05Look at him. Mr Strictly.
0:42:05 > 0:42:07Seven!
0:42:07 > 0:42:09What a charmer.
0:42:09 > 0:42:11- I just think this is beautiful. - The sound is very tranquil.
0:42:11 > 0:42:15- Yeah, it is.- Isn't that lovely? - It is. Absolutely super.
0:42:15 > 0:42:17So, you've got lots of watering to do.
0:42:17 > 0:42:19So, this is going to be so scented.
0:42:19 > 0:42:21If you tread on that paving, I will kill you.
0:42:21 > 0:42:25- SHE LAUGHS - I'm so nice to the clients!
0:42:25 > 0:42:28That is one of Christine's favourite things,
0:42:28 > 0:42:30and I know that that has a lovely smell as well.
0:42:30 > 0:42:33- I'm glad you love it.- I love...absolutely love it.
0:42:33 > 0:42:35- Good. Thank you.- Super.
0:42:35 > 0:42:38And all your....well, everybody's hard work.
0:42:38 > 0:42:39It was a lot of hard work.
0:42:43 > 0:42:46- Yay!- HARRY:- Where did that go? - LAUGHTER
0:42:46 > 0:42:47- CHRISTINE:- Thanks, guys.
0:42:47 > 0:42:49- Brilliant. Thank you, everybody. - DAVID:- Cheers!
0:42:49 > 0:42:52Well done, everybody.
0:42:52 > 0:42:54The garden more than exceeds our expectations.
0:42:54 > 0:42:57It's fantastic. Amazing, yeah.
0:42:57 > 0:43:00Christine and Clive seem happy,
0:43:00 > 0:43:03but do they think their cash was well spent?
0:43:03 > 0:43:06Yes, I do. We're going to be looking out at this for a very long time.
0:43:06 > 0:43:10And we've got this as a result, which is amazing.
