0:00:02 > 0:00:04With her can-do attitude, love of simple gardens

0:00:04 > 0:00:06- and decades of experience...- Hello!

0:00:06 > 0:00:10..Charlie Dimmock is one of Britain's best-loved gardeners.

0:00:10 > 0:00:12Looking good, boys.

0:00:12 > 0:00:16But the new kids on the garden block are the Rich brothers.

0:00:16 > 0:00:19We will be the brothers that change people's perceptions of gardens.

0:00:19 > 0:00:22Winners of multiple medals at the Chelsea Flower Show...

0:00:22 > 0:00:24- Oh, good turn.- Oh, wow, absolutely amazing, isn't it?

0:00:24 > 0:00:30..the boys have become known for their dramatic outdoor spaces.

0:00:30 > 0:00:34Now these two different generations of gardening are going head-to-head.

0:00:34 > 0:00:38I know they've got a gold medal. But I can come up with a few ideas.

0:00:38 > 0:00:42They're meeting frustrated garden owners across the country...

0:00:42 > 0:00:45The photos made it look tiny. It is, isn't it?

0:00:45 > 0:00:48- I'm sure you've seen larger. - I don't know what to do with it.

0:00:48 > 0:00:51..and will each pitch them a design based on their needs...

0:00:51 > 0:00:53- Wow!- ..and budget.

0:00:53 > 0:00:54That looks really exciting.

0:00:54 > 0:00:56It doesn't look like it could be our garden.

0:00:56 > 0:00:59- The winner...- Hey!- Ta-da!

0:00:59 > 0:01:00- ALL:- Whoo!

0:01:00 > 0:01:03- ..brings their design to life... - Hold on, hold on!

0:01:03 > 0:01:04Sweet, isn't it?

0:01:04 > 0:01:07..and the loser has to help them build it.

0:01:07 > 0:01:10Well, I'm getting irritated now with faffing around.

0:01:10 > 0:01:12This is what happens...

0:01:12 > 0:01:14- Does he ever get irritated? - All the time.

0:01:14 > 0:01:16..when different styles collide...

0:01:16 > 0:01:18- Who chose these?- One, two, three...

0:01:20 > 0:01:23- This looks like your design.- Yeah.

0:01:23 > 0:01:26..to turn garden dreams into reality.

0:01:26 > 0:01:29- Wow!- Wow.- You can open your eyes.

0:01:29 > 0:01:31- Wow. It's amazing. - It's beautiful.

0:01:37 > 0:01:41This week, Charlie and the Rich brothers are competing over

0:01:41 > 0:01:45a garden whose owners want to take it back from their teenage children.

0:01:47 > 0:01:51This garden definitely needs some attention.

0:01:53 > 0:01:57Basically, Anthony built the house, they moved in, him and Lisa,

0:01:57 > 0:02:01seven years ago, and they wanted a lot of space for the children

0:02:01 > 0:02:03to run round when they were young.

0:02:03 > 0:02:06Lisa, who works in e-commerce, and Anthony,

0:02:06 > 0:02:11a self-employed plasterer, live in a detached house in Cambridgeshire

0:02:11 > 0:02:14with their children, 15-year-old Theo and 17-year-old Olivia.

0:02:19 > 0:02:22We did a self-build house and it took me

0:02:22 > 0:02:23four and a half years to build.

0:02:26 > 0:02:28The only part that hasn't been completed is the back garden

0:02:28 > 0:02:31where we ran out of inspiration.

0:02:37 > 0:02:39It's really just been used by the children, hasn't it?

0:02:39 > 0:02:42Got the trampoline, the goalposts, we've just used it as a playground,

0:02:42 > 0:02:45so we've not really bothered doing anything with it.

0:02:46 > 0:02:48They're a lot older now,

0:02:48 > 0:02:50so their need's not for playing in the garden now.

0:02:50 > 0:02:52So they can hand it back over to us.

0:02:54 > 0:02:56I have to say, I don't think they did much with the garden,

0:02:56 > 0:02:59other than just lawn it down in the first place.

0:02:59 > 0:03:01- Yeah, but you said he built his own house?- Uh-huh.

0:03:01 > 0:03:04I'm surprised he struggled a little bit on the shed, there.

0:03:04 > 0:03:06- THEY LAUGH - That's falling apart, isn't it?

0:03:06 > 0:03:08Like all things like that, though,

0:03:08 > 0:03:11- you tend to leave your stuff until last, don't you?- BOTH:- Yeah.

0:03:11 > 0:03:13That's my excuse, and I'm sticking to it.

0:03:13 > 0:03:14THEY LAUGH

0:03:16 > 0:03:18This is a family that likes to party.

0:03:18 > 0:03:21And the current state of their garden is putting the kibosh

0:03:21 > 0:03:23on their social life in the summer months.

0:03:25 > 0:03:27Wintertime's great here.

0:03:27 > 0:03:30We have nice New Year's Eve parties

0:03:30 > 0:03:32and we want to have nice summer parties.

0:03:33 > 0:03:36And then it's Olivia's 18th birthday this year.

0:03:36 > 0:03:39And she talked about having a party in the garden.

0:03:39 > 0:03:43But I think it's a bit embarrassing sometimes when they bring

0:03:43 > 0:03:45their friends round and the garden looks such a mess.

0:03:47 > 0:03:51This garden needs to be ready for Olivia's big day.

0:03:51 > 0:03:53And in order to get it looking shipshape,

0:03:53 > 0:03:55they've made some sacrifices.

0:03:56 > 0:03:59Well, at the start of the year we decided to forfeit our holiday,

0:03:59 > 0:04:02and the money that we set aside for a holiday,

0:04:02 > 0:04:05we felt that we'd actually get the garden fixed up with it.

0:04:08 > 0:04:11- So the budget's 2,500.- It's not... - Decent.

0:04:11 > 0:04:13It's quite a big garden, but I think, you know,

0:04:13 > 0:04:16- we can do quite a lot for that, can't we?- Yeah.

0:04:16 > 0:04:19Harry's right. At 17 by 15 metres,

0:04:19 > 0:04:23this is a big garden to tackle for just two and a half grand.

0:04:26 > 0:04:27But undeterred,

0:04:27 > 0:04:32they're travelling to Cambridgeshire to see the garden in the flesh.

0:04:32 > 0:04:35And initial indicators are not encouraging.

0:04:35 > 0:04:37- Look at this. - HE LAUGHS

0:04:37 > 0:04:39Why are you laughing?

0:04:39 > 0:04:42Well, I think a couple of these plants look a bit dodgy, don't they?

0:04:42 > 0:04:43Not quite looked after.

0:04:43 > 0:04:46Yeah, I was admiring Christmas tree number one,

0:04:46 > 0:04:48Christmas tree number two over there.

0:04:48 > 0:04:50I don't hold out much hope for number two.

0:04:52 > 0:04:55But round the back, there is one feature in this sad and

0:04:55 > 0:04:58desolate garden that has caught the designers' eyes.

0:04:58 > 0:05:01Well, everyone talks about borrowed views, but...

0:05:01 > 0:05:03Yeah, it's not the best one, is it?

0:05:03 > 0:05:05I think I'd give that one back, to be honest.

0:05:05 > 0:05:09The garden backs onto a warehouse and it's huge,

0:05:09 > 0:05:12dominating the space.

0:05:12 > 0:05:15- At least it's green, I suppose, isn't it?- Not enough, not enough.

0:05:15 > 0:05:19- Mind you, that one. It's all right. - Yeah, that's a lot nicer, isn't it?

0:05:19 > 0:05:20A lot softer. A lot more natural.

0:05:20 > 0:05:25- I think we have the views this way for this garden.- Well...

0:05:25 > 0:05:28They've tried to have some form of decking out here.

0:05:28 > 0:05:30It looks like it needs a little attention.

0:05:30 > 0:05:33The execution is just slightly off, isn't it?

0:05:35 > 0:05:39As usual, Harry and David head inside the house to try and

0:05:39 > 0:05:42get a feel for Lisa and Anthony's taste.

0:05:42 > 0:05:46And the inside couldn't be more different to the outside.

0:05:46 > 0:05:50Oh, wow. Now this is definitely a contrast to the garden, isn't it?

0:05:50 > 0:05:52Look how clean and very uncluttered. Nice and modern.

0:05:52 > 0:05:55So I think, this is their real character, you know,

0:05:55 > 0:05:57this is what we need to take and put into our design.

0:05:57 > 0:06:01Charlie wants to get to know Lisa and Anthony to find out more

0:06:01 > 0:06:04about why they want their garden changed.

0:06:04 > 0:06:07So the garden's obviously been well-used.

0:06:07 > 0:06:10- Very well-used, but not very well-loved, really.- Yeah.

0:06:10 > 0:06:14Now, what do you want from your new garden, as such?

0:06:14 > 0:06:17I think more a grown-up space, don't we?

0:06:17 > 0:06:19Yeah, we like to socialise quite a lot,

0:06:19 > 0:06:22so it's not very inviting as it is.

0:06:22 > 0:06:26- The deck out the back beside the patio doors.- It's different.

0:06:26 > 0:06:27THEY LAUGH

0:06:27 > 0:06:30That basically went down for a birthday party when Olivia

0:06:30 > 0:06:34was ten and it's been there ever since.

0:06:36 > 0:06:38Feels like one big open room as well.

0:06:38 > 0:06:40They've got that real nice divide there in glass.

0:06:40 > 0:06:42It feels quite transparent.

0:06:42 > 0:06:44So I think, what we'll try and do is pull that outside,

0:06:44 > 0:06:47split the sections up into these little isolated rooms,

0:06:47 > 0:06:49but not too dominant that they feel as if, you know,

0:06:49 > 0:06:52- you're not connected to the whole garden.- Yeah.

0:06:52 > 0:06:55The table and chairs are quite a long way from the house.

0:06:55 > 0:06:58We get sun in this corner, sort of the end of the day in the summer.

0:06:58 > 0:07:01So we'll come here on a really hot day,

0:07:01 > 0:07:04brave the garden and have dinner out here, but not very often.

0:07:04 > 0:07:06What sort of maintenance?

0:07:09 > 0:07:11- Low.- Low. Are you gardeners?

0:07:11 > 0:07:13No, we've never done anything.

0:07:13 > 0:07:15But I'm quite interested to learn,

0:07:15 > 0:07:17so I would be willing to spend a bit of time.

0:07:17 > 0:07:21I think once it's nice, I'd enjoy doing it and keeping it nice.

0:07:21 > 0:07:24We go to friends' houses who've just got nicely kept gardens and

0:07:24 > 0:07:26we're like, "Oh, it would be lovely to have a garden like this."

0:07:26 > 0:07:29- Also, element of colour I think is crucial, isn't it?- Lots of red.

0:07:29 > 0:07:32Put that in the garden, maybe in flowerbeds, that would really uplift

0:07:32 > 0:07:35- the garden.- That would link both spaces, then, as well.

0:07:35 > 0:07:38So we're going socialising areas, simple,

0:07:38 > 0:07:40you're up for a bit of gardening,

0:07:40 > 0:07:43- we probably want to screen out the warehouse...- That would be nice.

0:07:43 > 0:07:45..a little bit, but other than that?

0:07:45 > 0:07:49- It's up to you.- Anything goes. - Anything goes.

0:07:51 > 0:07:54It's clear that Lisa and Anthony are fed up,

0:07:54 > 0:07:58after years of having their garden turned upside down by the children.

0:07:58 > 0:07:59They don't mind what they get,

0:07:59 > 0:08:03as long as it's different to what it is now.

0:08:03 > 0:08:05But that's the kind of challenge that Charlie

0:08:05 > 0:08:06and the Rich brothers love.

0:08:11 > 0:08:15So they waste no more time in getting their ideas down on paper.

0:08:17 > 0:08:20Each of them has to design what they believe will be Lisa and

0:08:20 > 0:08:23Anthony's perfect garden that works within their budget.

0:08:23 > 0:08:26They will then go head-to-head to pitch their ideas

0:08:26 > 0:08:29and whoever loses has to help the winner

0:08:29 > 0:08:31turn their design into reality.

0:08:35 > 0:08:37So who will they choose?

0:08:37 > 0:08:41Charlie understands how badly Lisa wants to enjoy the garden

0:08:41 > 0:08:43with friends and family.

0:08:43 > 0:08:44Here we go.

0:08:46 > 0:08:50But the boys have seen that the couple have very particular taste,

0:08:50 > 0:08:55which, if captured in their design, could really work in their favour.

0:08:55 > 0:08:56So this is our design.

0:08:56 > 0:08:58Oh, my God.

0:08:58 > 0:09:01It's time for the big pitch.

0:09:01 > 0:09:04So you guys told us that you very rarely use your garden and

0:09:04 > 0:09:06that's something we don't want to hear.

0:09:06 > 0:09:08We want to give you a garden that's really usable,

0:09:08 > 0:09:10got a nice contemporary clean style, easy to maintain.

0:09:10 > 0:09:11But just somewhere as well

0:09:11 > 0:09:14that if you've got entertaining going on in the house,

0:09:14 > 0:09:15you can open up your patio doors

0:09:15 > 0:09:18and you can use your garden like it's another room.

0:09:18 > 0:09:20One of the key elements of this is this large deck.

0:09:20 > 0:09:21And what's so nice is,

0:09:21 > 0:09:24when you have those doors open from the living room and kitchen,

0:09:24 > 0:09:26you've got these lovely big planting beds that can be very

0:09:26 > 0:09:28colourful, so when you are inside,

0:09:28 > 0:09:31- you've always got this kind of nice bit of artwork outside.- Very nice.

0:09:31 > 0:09:36So this is your patio doors here. And I have a split deck.

0:09:36 > 0:09:40Now, the reason I've put it on a diagonal is to frame that view,

0:09:40 > 0:09:43rather than seeing the shed and the warehouse.

0:09:43 > 0:09:46And by doing it on a diagonal like that,

0:09:46 > 0:09:50you're using the longest length to make the garden look even bigger.

0:09:53 > 0:09:55Both designers have added a large deck,

0:09:55 > 0:09:58perfect for when the couple's friends come over.

0:09:58 > 0:10:01But what plans have they got for the top corner?

0:10:03 > 0:10:06This is your attractive patio area

0:10:06 > 0:10:09down at the end, where you can socialise.

0:10:09 > 0:10:10Nice warm area.

0:10:10 > 0:10:14And then this is going to be a much more wild area with the trees in it.

0:10:14 > 0:10:16They are small trees.

0:10:16 > 0:10:20And then underneath this feature tree, is a very simple seat.

0:10:21 > 0:10:25Charlie's added oodles of space for socialising with

0:10:25 > 0:10:30a double deck outside the house, a seat around the tree and the patio.

0:10:30 > 0:10:34How will the boys respond with their plan for that sunny corner?

0:10:34 > 0:10:36We want to create somewhere that's a bit more private,

0:10:36 > 0:10:38so it's surrounded by, like,

0:10:38 > 0:10:40meadow turf, so it's always changing, very low-maintenance.

0:10:40 > 0:10:42You cut it down, like, once a year, which is great.

0:10:42 > 0:10:44And then a few shrubs as well,

0:10:44 > 0:10:46so it makes that kind of natural enclosure in a way.

0:10:46 > 0:10:48It's just immersed you a little bit in the space.

0:10:48 > 0:10:51And it's just somewhere where, if your children are in the garden,

0:10:51 > 0:10:54then you could be here with your friends and you're out of the way.

0:10:54 > 0:10:57One of the important issues for the designers to tackle,

0:10:57 > 0:11:00was how to mask the warehouse at the back of the garden.

0:11:01 > 0:11:04It's quite imposing, and what we want to do is put

0:11:04 > 0:11:07a little avenue of trees there, like a cherry or birch just

0:11:07 > 0:11:10so that it blurs the line and you have this nice natural screen.

0:11:10 > 0:11:13The nice thing about cherry is that it will give you blossom.

0:11:13 > 0:11:14It will give you autumn colour.

0:11:14 > 0:11:17So it's something that's really going to give you high interest.

0:11:17 > 0:11:20So the trees will disguise the warehouse area,

0:11:20 > 0:11:25but also this is just a very basic, simple pergola

0:11:25 > 0:11:28with just very simple, straightforward climbers on it.

0:11:28 > 0:11:30Basically look after themselves.

0:11:30 > 0:11:35It will just draw your eyeline down the garden rather than

0:11:35 > 0:11:37seeing the warehouse at the back.

0:11:37 > 0:11:39- I like it.- You like that?

0:11:39 > 0:11:41Wonderful, well, thank you very much.

0:11:41 > 0:11:44- Thank you.- We'll see you in a bit. - That's it, time's up.

0:11:44 > 0:11:47Now it's all down to Lisa and Anthony.

0:11:48 > 0:11:51- It's really hard to choose, isn't it?- Very difficult.

0:11:51 > 0:11:55Will they go for Charlie's design with multiple seating areas and

0:11:55 > 0:11:59the clever pergola that draws the view away from the warehouse?

0:12:00 > 0:12:03I like the way the decking is not right the way across on this one.

0:12:03 > 0:12:05I like all this round here, though.

0:12:05 > 0:12:07That looks very low-maintenance.

0:12:07 > 0:12:09The meadow.

0:12:09 > 0:12:12Or will they opt for the natural elegance of the

0:12:12 > 0:12:15Rich brothers' design with its meadow planting and cherry trees?

0:12:16 > 0:12:19I think, yeah, there's elements in both that we like,

0:12:19 > 0:12:24but I think there's more in one particular.

0:12:24 > 0:12:25It's decision time.

0:12:28 > 0:12:30Hello.

0:12:30 > 0:12:33- Hello.- Hello. We've made our decision...

0:12:34 > 0:12:37..and the decision is...

0:12:40 > 0:12:42- Charlie.- Ah, nice Charlie.

0:12:42 > 0:12:44- Well done.- That's good!

0:12:44 > 0:12:48Oh, I'm pleased about that. It's all about the view, all about the view.

0:12:48 > 0:12:50Yeah, we loved them both,

0:12:50 > 0:12:53but this has got more elements of what we were hoping for

0:12:53 > 0:12:54for the garden.

0:12:56 > 0:12:57So this one's gone to Charlie.

0:12:57 > 0:12:59But in just a few months,

0:12:59 > 0:13:03this garden will need to be fit for an 18th birthday party.

0:13:03 > 0:13:05So she and the boys are going to have to work

0:13:05 > 0:13:07together to get it ready for the big occasion.

0:13:13 > 0:13:15It's an early start for the landscapers,

0:13:15 > 0:13:19and the weather gods are not smiling on Cambridgeshire.

0:13:19 > 0:13:22The team start to clear Lisa and Anthony's garden and the

0:13:22 > 0:13:25makeshift deck is the first to get the heave-ho.

0:13:28 > 0:13:31Charlie is safely out of the rain, off-site,

0:13:31 > 0:13:33putting the finishing touches to her design.

0:13:34 > 0:13:36And, not only that,

0:13:36 > 0:13:39she's convinced Anthony to help the landscapers.

0:13:43 > 0:13:47Charlie's design has the deck, the borders and the pergola on an

0:13:47 > 0:13:51angle, but no-one seems to able to work out what the angle is.

0:13:51 > 0:13:56We need to find that line. I thought it was 45 degrees.

0:13:56 > 0:14:00- But after setting that up... - Yes, it's clearly not, is it? No.

0:14:00 > 0:14:03Ideally, we could do with that distance there.

0:14:03 > 0:14:05It's not going to be a massive border,

0:14:05 > 0:14:07just simply because I know what plants we're putting in.

0:14:07 > 0:14:11Well, can we go with a metre and a half? Something like that?

0:14:11 > 0:14:14- Can we actually say that?- Does Paul say yeah?- Yeah.

0:14:14 > 0:14:17Project manager Paul gives them the thumbs up to create a

0:14:17 > 0:14:20one-and-a-half-metre border next to the deck.

0:14:20 > 0:14:24This will make the angle less acute and matches the design perfectly.

0:14:25 > 0:14:29So now the geometry is sorted, the team can crack on with

0:14:29 > 0:14:33digging out the base for the patio in miserable conditions.

0:14:33 > 0:14:34Come on, you old lot.

0:14:36 > 0:14:39Luckily, we've got a superb team of landscapers that really

0:14:39 > 0:14:41enjoy working in this kind of weather.

0:14:41 > 0:14:43In fact, they thrive in it.

0:14:43 > 0:14:45It makes us go faster.

0:14:45 > 0:14:48HE LAUGHS

0:14:48 > 0:14:50He's used to a bit of hard graft,

0:14:50 > 0:14:54but even Anthony is wondering why he agreed to help out.

0:14:54 > 0:14:57After all, he and Lisa are paying for it.

0:14:58 > 0:15:01Over on the other side of the garden, the sub-frame is being

0:15:01 > 0:15:05built for the large deck that will go across the back of the house.

0:15:09 > 0:15:12And as the rain eases up a bit,

0:15:12 > 0:15:16Andy and the boys get on with laying the patio before the next downpour.

0:15:21 > 0:15:24Meanwhile, Charlie and the Rich brothers have arrived,

0:15:24 > 0:15:27and the gaffer gives the workers a pep talk

0:15:27 > 0:15:28before they all get stuck in.

0:15:30 > 0:15:34So the whole thing is to sort of draw the eye away from

0:15:34 > 0:15:37that very tiny little warehouse at the back of the garden.

0:15:37 > 0:15:40- So I've got you on the pergola. - Aw, brilliant.

0:15:40 > 0:15:43- Maybe a little bit of decking.- Nice.

0:15:43 > 0:15:47Because, to be honest, the budget, because it's a party garden...

0:15:47 > 0:15:50You spent it all on booze?

0:15:50 > 0:15:53No, I've spent it all on the hard landscaping and because

0:15:53 > 0:15:55they're not really gardeners,

0:15:55 > 0:15:58we're going to go with some very straightforward planting.

0:15:58 > 0:16:01- And then we've got the trees. - Yeah, well, talking of trees,

0:16:01 > 0:16:03let's make like a tree and LEAF.

0:16:03 > 0:16:07- Leaf? Oh, dearie me.- Barking mad.

0:16:12 > 0:16:16With the deck being so prominent in the design, and, well, large,

0:16:16 > 0:16:19the boys try and break the back of it while there's still

0:16:19 > 0:16:20a gap in the rain showers.

0:16:27 > 0:16:30So we'll be using four-by-two treated timber to create the

0:16:30 > 0:16:31structures of the deck.

0:16:31 > 0:16:33Underneath, we've got landscape fabric,

0:16:33 > 0:16:35which is going to suppress the weeds.

0:16:35 > 0:16:36There is a little bit of give on the joists,

0:16:36 > 0:16:39so what we're going to do is we're going to create some pegs and

0:16:39 > 0:16:42knock them in, and that's going to give a lovely rigid base

0:16:42 > 0:16:43to the deck.

0:16:45 > 0:16:47And for the deck, we're using six-by-two timbers.

0:16:47 > 0:16:50Now, you'd usually see these as joists on a roof,

0:16:50 > 0:16:53but they're great for decking for many reasons.

0:16:53 > 0:16:55As you can see, they're big boys. They're thick, so it means

0:16:55 > 0:16:58they're going to be long-lasting, really durable, really tough.

0:16:58 > 0:17:01They haven't got the normal ridges on them, like decking usually does,

0:17:01 > 0:17:03but that's more of a decorative thing, really,

0:17:03 > 0:17:04rather than a functionality.

0:17:04 > 0:17:07That tends to, like, grab dirt and dust and erode the decking

0:17:07 > 0:17:09a bit faster than if it doesn't have it.

0:17:13 > 0:17:16Meanwhile, Charlie and project manager Paul are giving the

0:17:16 > 0:17:19trees she's had delivered the once over.

0:17:19 > 0:17:21We've got a really good mix of trees here.

0:17:21 > 0:17:24Evergreen, we've got colour foliage,

0:17:24 > 0:17:26we've got flowers and we've got structure,

0:17:26 > 0:17:29so that's going to be fabulous in the garden. It's really

0:17:29 > 0:17:32going to help screen fairly instantly, quite quick growers.

0:17:32 > 0:17:33What sort of prices were they?

0:17:33 > 0:17:36Well, the big one you've got hold of there, that's about 90.

0:17:36 > 0:17:39- Right.- And then it goes down in price,

0:17:39 > 0:17:41this one's probably 60, right down to about £30.

0:17:41 > 0:17:44So, all we need to make sure is that, when we put them in,

0:17:44 > 0:17:46they get watered properly so they establish.

0:17:46 > 0:17:50So I think we'll be retrieving a few things from the skip.

0:17:50 > 0:17:51Great, nice and cheap.

0:17:53 > 0:17:55Right, first one in.

0:17:56 > 0:17:59Rather than repeating the same species of tree,

0:17:59 > 0:18:01Charlie has chosen to plant just one of

0:18:01 > 0:18:05a variety of different trees that will all offer something

0:18:05 > 0:18:08different and act like works of art around the garden.

0:18:12 > 0:18:14Liquid amber, this tree is.

0:18:14 > 0:18:18And it really describes the colour it goes in the autumn.

0:18:18 > 0:18:23It goes... You'll get yellows and oranges and reds and almost purples,

0:18:23 > 0:18:27so it looks fantastic in the autumn.

0:18:27 > 0:18:29Quite tall, so it will help screen,

0:18:29 > 0:18:33but not too broad, so it won't overhang the seating area.

0:18:36 > 0:18:39Next, she's chosen a smaller variety with

0:18:39 > 0:18:43a good strong shape and leaves that contrast with the liquid amber.

0:18:46 > 0:18:50And last but not least, a cornus for a beautiful spring display.

0:18:50 > 0:18:55- So I think this one should be opposite the cercis.- OK.

0:18:56 > 0:19:00But because everything is placed at precise angles in Charlie's design,

0:19:00 > 0:19:05to avert the view away from the ugly warehouse, she takes time to

0:19:05 > 0:19:08check the positioning of the trees before planting.

0:19:08 > 0:19:10There. It's going to be there.

0:19:11 > 0:19:13There.

0:19:13 > 0:19:18Cool. So those two trees are going to be our key focal points

0:19:18 > 0:19:21at right angles to the deck and seating area.

0:19:21 > 0:19:23Is it all making sense now?

0:19:23 > 0:19:25- Is it making sense to you, Lee? - MOUTHS:- No!- No?!

0:19:25 > 0:19:27THEY LAUGH

0:19:27 > 0:19:29OK, then, you get back to the decking, mate.

0:19:29 > 0:19:32He's so confused, he's got his beard in knots.

0:19:35 > 0:19:39Harry's still grafting away on the gargantuan deck while Charlie

0:19:39 > 0:19:42starts to get the focal points into the ground.

0:19:42 > 0:19:45I think that's about deep enough and wide enough.

0:19:45 > 0:19:48As you can see, I've taken off a big circle of turf because I

0:19:48 > 0:19:53don't want the grass to take the nutrients away from the tree.

0:19:53 > 0:19:54Once it's established,

0:19:54 > 0:19:58it doesn't matter if Anthony lets the grass grow back over,

0:19:58 > 0:20:00but for the first couple of years,

0:20:00 > 0:20:03it's a good idea to keep that turf free.

0:20:05 > 0:20:08And because it's a good-sized tree, Charlie is using what she

0:20:08 > 0:20:12found in a skip to help Anthony and Lisa care for it.

0:20:12 > 0:20:17Rescued from the skip, so um, basic, some waste pipe,

0:20:17 > 0:20:21cut it in two bits, with a big tree you want two or three bits,

0:20:21 > 0:20:25and we're going to pop those in, down the side,

0:20:25 > 0:20:29so that Lisa and Anthony can water the tree, but put the water down the

0:20:29 > 0:20:33pipe, so it goes right to the bottom of the hole where the roots are.

0:20:33 > 0:20:37Cos if you water on the surface, and you don't water well enough,

0:20:37 > 0:20:39it will bring the roots up to the surface.

0:20:39 > 0:20:41It's not overly pretty, but very practical.

0:20:44 > 0:20:48Charlie's design has a seat around the base of this cornus tree,

0:20:48 > 0:20:50but now she's seen it in the flesh,

0:20:50 > 0:20:53she knows it won't really work until the tree is much bigger.

0:20:55 > 0:20:59So she's come up with an alternative seating idea and wants to run

0:20:59 > 0:21:01it past Anthony and Lisa.

0:21:03 > 0:21:07- I'm thinking a bit of fun for Olivia and Theo.- Yeah?

0:21:07 > 0:21:11I want to make them, like a chill-out area over here.

0:21:11 > 0:21:15I want to make like...almost like a chaise longue,

0:21:15 > 0:21:19but a circular one that they can put a blanket in, so it's

0:21:19 > 0:21:24literally going to be a ring of soil that is compacted down and then

0:21:24 > 0:21:28we'll turf up and over, and they can lay in it and look at the stars.

0:21:28 > 0:21:31- I'm thinking for Olivia's... - Yeah, she'll love that.

0:21:31 > 0:21:33- She'd like that, would she? - Yeah, sounds really good.

0:21:33 > 0:21:36I'm actually thinking I'd quite like that.

0:21:36 > 0:21:38Lie there with my book in the summer, yeah.

0:21:38 > 0:21:40- So you'll be fighting the children over it, will you?- I think so, yeah.

0:21:40 > 0:21:42Sounds good.

0:21:50 > 0:21:54Meanwhile, Lee's taking great care to make sure that one of the

0:21:54 > 0:21:59garden's other entertainment areas looks as sharp as possible.

0:21:59 > 0:22:00These are special decking screws.

0:22:00 > 0:22:03Really small head, so we can bury them into the timber and

0:22:03 > 0:22:05therefore you hardly see them once it's done.

0:22:05 > 0:22:07I mean, whether he wants to stain it or sand it,

0:22:07 > 0:22:08but they're very discreet.

0:22:12 > 0:22:15- Right, don't go too fast. - No, I won't.

0:22:15 > 0:22:16At the back of the garden,

0:22:16 > 0:22:19Charlie and David have the spray paint at the ready.

0:22:19 > 0:22:20THEY LAUGH

0:22:20 > 0:22:22Go on. Argh!

0:22:22 > 0:22:24- Oh, dizzy.- I'm a bit dizzy.

0:22:24 > 0:22:27With line marker and walking round in circles, ooh.

0:22:27 > 0:22:29Go back the other way.

0:22:29 > 0:22:31Don't stop, otherwise I'm going to mouth off.

0:22:31 > 0:22:33And they make quite the double act.

0:22:33 > 0:22:35Get off my shoes!

0:22:36 > 0:22:39- How's that?- Yeah?- Not bad.

0:22:39 > 0:22:43So if we put the turf from all the trees in this bit and then with

0:22:43 > 0:22:46the soil we can just grade up and down.

0:22:46 > 0:22:48And then turf it.

0:22:48 > 0:22:51- Oh, I'm quite dizzy now. - Oh, I just need to sit down.

0:22:54 > 0:22:58The grass chill-out area, along with the extensive deck and patio will,

0:22:58 > 0:23:02together, make Lisa and Anthony's garden ideal for entertaining.

0:23:07 > 0:23:12When creating entertaining areas in a garden, it's all about the hard

0:23:12 > 0:23:15landscaping, as that is where the table and chairs are likely to go.

0:23:16 > 0:23:21It's also important to consider what you want to use the space for.

0:23:21 > 0:23:24When garden designer Andrew Jordan designed this garden in

0:23:24 > 0:23:28Wiltshire, he made sure he knew exactly what the owners had in mind.

0:23:30 > 0:23:33The brief from the client is very much to spend time as

0:23:33 > 0:23:34a family outdoors.

0:23:34 > 0:23:38So, it was all about being able to eat outdoors, have friends,

0:23:38 > 0:23:42family around, to have a big space in which to entertain.

0:23:42 > 0:23:46So, the challenge was to include all those elements but for them

0:23:46 > 0:23:47to work together.

0:23:49 > 0:23:52The elements Andrew added to this space are

0:23:52 > 0:23:56a large paved area for dining and lounging, the spa pool for

0:23:56 > 0:24:01relaxing and a sunken seating area for chilling out.

0:24:01 > 0:24:05He united all these spaces with a large patio and added trees

0:24:05 > 0:24:08and planting to make each area distinct from the next.

0:24:14 > 0:24:17Back in Cambridgeshire, Harry is starting to plant the trees

0:24:17 > 0:24:21that will add privacy and intimacy to the garden's entertaining spaces.

0:24:21 > 0:24:23He's starting with the eucalyptus.

0:24:26 > 0:24:29Eucalyptus are fast-growing trees,

0:24:29 > 0:24:32usually grown for their foliage and attractive peeling bark.

0:24:32 > 0:24:35They can grow very tall if left to their own devices

0:24:35 > 0:24:39but respond well to pruning in early spring, which means they can

0:24:39 > 0:24:42be enjoyed in even the smallest gardens.

0:24:46 > 0:24:50- Charlie.- Yes.- Finished that, so what do you think is next to be done?

0:24:50 > 0:24:51What would you like me to do?

0:24:51 > 0:24:55Well, we need more turf for this, so we need to cut the flowerbed.

0:24:55 > 0:24:57Rather than hand-lifter, if we can use the turf stripper,

0:24:57 > 0:24:59- because then we can use that turf...- As the bank.

0:24:59 > 0:25:01Green side down, up and over,

0:25:01 > 0:25:05up and over and slowly built it up and then it won't be lumpy.

0:25:07 > 0:25:10So, after marking out where the borders will go,

0:25:10 > 0:25:13Harry fires up the turf cutter and gets to work.

0:25:19 > 0:25:22Turf cutters can be hired for about £60 a day and make

0:25:22 > 0:25:24short work of lifting grass.

0:25:31 > 0:25:35Over by the house, Lee and Andy are battling the elements

0:25:35 > 0:25:36to get the deck down.

0:25:36 > 0:25:39Working in wet conditions is a muddy business and there's

0:25:39 > 0:25:42been some collateral damage to Anthony and Lisa's lawn.

0:25:45 > 0:25:48The boys are doing really well with the deck, but it's just

0:25:48 > 0:25:52started to rain again and we had lots of rain earlier on,

0:25:52 > 0:25:56and as you can see, the grass has turned into a bit of a quagmire.

0:25:56 > 0:25:59Although it would come back quite happily just by giving it

0:25:59 > 0:26:04a good old vigorous rake, what we're going to do is returf this area.

0:26:04 > 0:26:07This part of the lawn is what I would call the posh lawn.

0:26:07 > 0:26:11So basically Anthony has to mow it regularly, which will stop

0:26:11 > 0:26:13a lot of the big weeds like thistles.

0:26:13 > 0:26:17It won't stop things like dandelions and daisies, though, and the best

0:26:17 > 0:26:21way to tackle those is to use an old kitchen knife and cut them out.

0:26:26 > 0:26:29Find your dandelion, go round in a circle.

0:26:31 > 0:26:34And it will just pop out and you've got the root as well.

0:26:37 > 0:26:42One of the most important aspects of Charlie's design is that attention

0:26:42 > 0:26:45is diverted away from the large warehouse at the back of the plot.

0:26:47 > 0:26:51As well as the trees, she's adding a pergola that follows the same

0:26:51 > 0:26:54lines as the rest of the landscaping.

0:26:54 > 0:26:56Charlie wants to split the garden into two using

0:26:56 > 0:26:59a pergola and we're just digging the holes at the moment

0:26:59 > 0:27:02down to 18in and what we're going to do then, is we're going to

0:27:02 > 0:27:05construct the pergola on the floor, so it makes it very easy.

0:27:05 > 0:27:07And then we're just going to fix it in, get the verticals up,

0:27:07 > 0:27:08get the horizontals on.

0:27:08 > 0:27:12Yeah, it's quite a nice easy, fast way of doing it as well, isn't it?

0:27:12 > 0:27:13Speedy pergola-making.

0:27:24 > 0:27:27Hold on. That's perfect there.

0:27:28 > 0:27:32Once the posts are bang-on, they can be secured into the ground.

0:27:35 > 0:27:38Putting posts like this in is great for it to go up as quick as

0:27:38 > 0:27:40possible, so you get a real strong structure.

0:27:40 > 0:27:43We're using a quick-setting cement and, you know, within ten minutes,

0:27:43 > 0:27:46this is going to be solid, so we can crack on with the rest of the posts.

0:27:49 > 0:27:52While the boys carry on with the pergola,

0:27:52 > 0:27:55Charlie is out the front in the old plant graveyard.

0:27:56 > 0:28:00Like so many of us, Lisa and Anthony had a thing about blue pots.

0:28:00 > 0:28:02They may no longer be fashionable,

0:28:02 > 0:28:04but they're still in good condition.

0:28:07 > 0:28:09Lisa likes her containers,

0:28:09 > 0:28:14but she hasn't been overly successful, as you can see.

0:28:14 > 0:28:17When it comes to containers, if you want to make your life easy,

0:28:17 > 0:28:20there's a few things that I suggest you do.

0:28:20 > 0:28:25Always make sure there is a hole in the bottom for drainage.

0:28:25 > 0:28:28Go for a bigger pot because it's easier to maintain larger

0:28:28 > 0:28:30pots than really small ones.

0:28:30 > 0:28:35These ones are great because they're really nice and heavy.

0:28:35 > 0:28:37Now, although these have got holes in them,

0:28:37 > 0:28:42the holes are actually quite tiny, so it's easy that they'll block up.

0:28:42 > 0:28:45So I'm going to put a good load of crocks on the bottom.

0:28:45 > 0:28:48These are broken terracotta pieces but gravel's OK.

0:28:48 > 0:28:53I'm putting a good layer there so that they definitely do drain.

0:28:53 > 0:28:56And if you're not very good about watering,

0:28:56 > 0:28:58use some moisture retention crystals.

0:29:02 > 0:29:04It's a bit like wallpaper paste.

0:29:04 > 0:29:06You'll see it slowly absorb the water.

0:29:06 > 0:29:08See, it's going thick already.

0:29:08 > 0:29:12So it holds on to the water, but then it releases it to the roots.

0:29:13 > 0:29:15Once the crystals have swelled up,

0:29:15 > 0:29:20Charlie mixes them in with the compost before planting up the pot.

0:29:20 > 0:29:23When it comes to choosing the plants to go in your pot,

0:29:23 > 0:29:25it's good to aim for a common theme.

0:29:26 > 0:29:29We have a big spiky phormium...

0:29:31 > 0:29:34..with this very sort of pinky coppery colour.

0:29:36 > 0:29:39To contrast with that shape-wise, we're going for London pride.

0:29:39 > 0:29:42As you can see it's very low and rounded,

0:29:42 > 0:29:45but we still pick up that pinky coppery colour.

0:29:46 > 0:29:51And then to pick up the very dark purpley colour,

0:29:51 > 0:29:54we've got this, which is related to the thistle, beautiful

0:29:54 > 0:29:58dark purple flowers on it.

0:29:58 > 0:30:02I mean, these are all really quite robust container plants,

0:30:02 > 0:30:07so hopefully, Lisa should be able to look after them.

0:30:07 > 0:30:12Pots and containers are a fabulous way of dressing a garden.

0:30:12 > 0:30:15And it's not just domestic gardens where they can be used to

0:30:15 > 0:30:16brighten up dark corners.

0:30:21 > 0:30:23Historic public gardens use them too.

0:30:27 > 0:30:28At Great Dixter, in East Sussex,

0:30:28 > 0:30:32home of the late great gardener Christopher Lloyd, the container

0:30:32 > 0:30:37displays that he introduced are as important as any part of the garden.

0:30:40 > 0:30:42He started putting pots outside

0:30:42 > 0:30:44the front porch, particularly spring pots.

0:30:44 > 0:30:46They'd give him a little bit of colour at a time of year

0:30:46 > 0:30:49when everything else was a bit slow to wake up.

0:30:49 > 0:30:51And the pot displays grew from there.

0:30:54 > 0:30:57At Great Dixter, they use pot displays rather like a

0:30:57 > 0:31:00vase of flowers on a table at home.

0:31:00 > 0:31:02They're changed regularly

0:31:02 > 0:31:04and reflect what's in season at the time.

0:31:05 > 0:31:08We make the display so that the plants contrast and

0:31:08 > 0:31:12combine together. So they're really visually effective.

0:31:12 > 0:31:14It's more like painting a picture.

0:31:14 > 0:31:17You'll put colour combinations together that can harmonise

0:31:17 > 0:31:19but can be quite challenging as well.

0:31:21 > 0:31:25We only put one variety of each plant in a pot and we really

0:31:25 > 0:31:30fill it, so the density here is far more than you'd have in a border.

0:31:30 > 0:31:32In the pot display, you might have several different varieties,

0:31:32 > 0:31:36but you can start to use these individual pots as components

0:31:36 > 0:31:38to start to paint that picture.

0:31:47 > 0:31:50Back in Cambridgeshire, there's still plenty of work to be done

0:31:50 > 0:31:53before Charlie can start painting a picture with her pots...

0:31:55 > 0:31:58..although Harry and David have made great progress

0:31:58 > 0:32:00with the turf sculpture.

0:32:00 > 0:32:02- Look at that.- It's looking cool, isn't it?

0:32:02 > 0:32:04- That's going to be great.- I'd love to lie down on that.

0:32:04 > 0:32:06- Yeah, well, go on.- No, not quite yet.

0:32:06 > 0:32:08- When it's all done.- Good decision.

0:32:11 > 0:32:14They've piled up the turf that's been lifted to make the

0:32:14 > 0:32:16flowerbeds and added some spoil.

0:32:17 > 0:32:20They then covered that with a layer of sand to get

0:32:20 > 0:32:23a nice smooth surface and are now adding fresh turf.

0:32:29 > 0:32:32Meanwhile, Charlie's moved on to the borders.

0:32:36 > 0:32:40She's placed them at the same angle as the hard landscaping.

0:32:40 > 0:32:43They will visually link both sides of the garden and break up

0:32:43 > 0:32:45the expanse of lawn and deck.

0:32:47 > 0:32:50So we're going for a bit of a pink and white theme with the colours.

0:32:50 > 0:32:53And we're going for flower and shrubs that basically look after

0:32:53 > 0:33:00themselves because Lisa and Anthony aren't that sure about gardening.

0:33:00 > 0:33:02But we'll get them there.

0:33:04 > 0:33:07Shrubs tend to be low-maintenance.

0:33:07 > 0:33:10They need very little pimping and preening apart from

0:33:10 > 0:33:12a prune when they start to get too large.

0:33:12 > 0:33:15They also add structure to a border,

0:33:15 > 0:33:17as they don't die down at the end of the year,

0:33:17 > 0:33:21so will provide a strong framework for Lisa and Anthony's new garden.

0:33:25 > 0:33:28The boys are on the home straight with the chill-out mound,

0:33:28 > 0:33:31but will it meet with the boss's approval?

0:33:33 > 0:33:36It reminds me of coffee and doughnuts.

0:33:36 > 0:33:38It's going to be a lovely little chilled spot, isn't it?

0:33:38 > 0:33:41It's going to be great. I might have to have a word with Lisa.

0:33:41 > 0:33:43Can you imagine if we put some camomile in the bottom?

0:33:43 > 0:33:46- That smell would be beautiful, wouldn't it?- Gorgeous.- Yes.

0:33:46 > 0:33:48- And it doesn't grow, so it's less maintenance.- Yeah.

0:33:48 > 0:33:52- So, just inter-planted through there.- Yeah, perfect.- It'd be fab.

0:33:52 > 0:33:54- I think they'll like that. - Yeah, I do as well.

0:33:56 > 0:33:59They won't like it if the garden doesn't get finished, though,

0:33:59 > 0:34:01so Charlie cracks on.

0:34:02 > 0:34:04So, I think that sambucus

0:34:04 > 0:34:07will look lovely against the brickwork,

0:34:07 > 0:34:10the dark purple of the leaves, the pink flowers,

0:34:10 > 0:34:13and it will get quite big, so it will soften this area.

0:34:13 > 0:34:16If you're putting a deck down, it's really nice to leave

0:34:16 > 0:34:17one or two planting pockets.

0:34:17 > 0:34:21That way it doesn't look like a pallet that you've put down.

0:34:21 > 0:34:24It sort of softens it and adds a little bit more interest.

0:34:31 > 0:34:33Flowering shrubs have sort of gone out of favour.

0:34:33 > 0:34:36I don't know why because they are great plants for a garden,

0:34:36 > 0:34:40especially if you're not really up on your gardening skills.

0:34:40 > 0:34:41They'll put up with a lot.

0:34:41 > 0:34:43They won't mind if the soil's a bit rubbish.

0:34:43 > 0:34:47They won't mind if you don't plant them exactly right.

0:34:47 > 0:34:49And they get quite big, fill in a space.

0:34:49 > 0:34:54So this area here of shrubs is going to surround the patio and make

0:34:54 > 0:34:56it like a little room on its own.

0:34:56 > 0:34:59So we've got wagelia, ribes,

0:34:59 > 0:35:03which is flowering currant, has sort of red flowers that hang down.

0:35:03 > 0:35:06We've got a choisya here, which gets white flowers on.

0:35:08 > 0:35:12The boss has the fun task of placing out the new shrubs.

0:35:12 > 0:35:16But for the boys, the turf-lifting continues.

0:35:16 > 0:35:19Now Charlie's got them pulling up the damaged grass by the deck,

0:35:19 > 0:35:21a lovely job to do in the rain.

0:35:26 > 0:35:30Charlie's moving on to planting some perennials in and amongst the shrubs

0:35:30 > 0:35:34to add different heights, textures and seasonal colour.

0:35:34 > 0:35:40Like the shrubs, we've gone for some really hardy perennials.

0:35:40 > 0:35:45Got astrantia, which have lovely white, open flowers

0:35:45 > 0:35:47with a tint of pink to the stamens.

0:35:49 > 0:35:54Hardy geraniums, catmint, circium.

0:35:56 > 0:35:59And crocosmia as well, which, again, will get quite big.

0:35:59 > 0:36:01They'll get up to about this high.

0:36:01 > 0:36:05Make a nice big clump like that and flower later in the season to

0:36:05 > 0:36:08give them some colour sort of come September time.

0:36:10 > 0:36:14Perennials die back at the end of each flowering season and

0:36:14 > 0:36:16come in all shapes and sizes.

0:36:16 > 0:36:20From the majestic spires of delphiniums and lupins

0:36:20 > 0:36:24to the open, sunny daisy-shapes of heleniums and echinacea.

0:36:26 > 0:36:29If you choose them well, you can have a different hardy

0:36:29 > 0:36:33perennial flowering in your border from early spring to late autumn.

0:36:38 > 0:36:41Plants going in, turf going out.

0:36:43 > 0:36:44The age-old saying.

0:36:46 > 0:36:48By the deck, Harry and David are creating

0:36:48 > 0:36:53a level, stone-free surface for the new turf to be laid on.

0:36:53 > 0:36:56Taking some time to prepare the earth beneath it

0:36:56 > 0:36:59means it's more likely to establish well.

0:36:59 > 0:37:00We've got a lovely new deck.

0:37:00 > 0:37:03There is no point having a muddy lawn, so giving this new bit

0:37:03 > 0:37:05of turf, it's really going to finish the garden off,

0:37:05 > 0:37:08and going to look great for the party as well.

0:37:08 > 0:37:11- Are you invited, Dave? - Yes. RSVP-ed already.

0:37:11 > 0:37:13HE LAUGHS

0:37:22 > 0:37:26There's no doubt that the weather is definitely taking its toll

0:37:26 > 0:37:27on the new garden.

0:37:27 > 0:37:29But the team have no choice but to keep going,

0:37:29 > 0:37:33and Charlie has tasked the brothers with planting up the new pergola.

0:37:36 > 0:37:41Climbers are a great way of creating really beautiful vertical interest.

0:37:41 > 0:37:43This one is clematis montana grandiflora.

0:37:43 > 0:37:48It has this beautiful floral display in late spring, early summer.

0:37:48 > 0:37:51And it's tough as old boots and it's just going to sprawl over this.

0:37:51 > 0:37:54And Charlie has really picked up the whites in her planting scheme,

0:37:54 > 0:37:57so these climbers not only give this lovely vertical interest, but

0:37:57 > 0:38:01also touch on the tones and colours through the planting in the garden.

0:38:05 > 0:38:08And I'm planting a rambling rose and this is the Albrighton Rambler,

0:38:08 > 0:38:09really gorgeous rose.

0:38:09 > 0:38:12As you can see, it's just coming into bud,

0:38:12 > 0:38:14and that's going to be double blooms of pink flowers.

0:38:14 > 0:38:16So that will look really pretty on here.

0:38:16 > 0:38:18At the moment, it sits about six foot tall.

0:38:18 > 0:38:20It's going to grow about twice as big as this.

0:38:20 > 0:38:22It's going to put a lot of growth out over the summer

0:38:22 > 0:38:24and really create this kind of vertical green wall.

0:38:24 > 0:38:27Oh! It's got spikes, though.

0:38:31 > 0:38:35All hands to the punts to get the beds planted up...

0:38:36 > 0:38:38..the deck finished off,

0:38:38 > 0:38:40and the borders dressed with bark.

0:38:41 > 0:38:43And last but not least,

0:38:43 > 0:38:47Charlie's revitalised pots are given pride of place

0:38:47 > 0:38:48on the new deck.

0:38:48 > 0:38:51And Lisa and Anthony's garden is finished.

0:38:56 > 0:38:58Before they called the Garden Rescue team,

0:38:58 > 0:39:02Lisa and Anthony's large plot was a sad patch of grass.

0:39:02 > 0:39:05Its only features were a football goal,

0:39:05 > 0:39:08a trampoline and a view of a huge warehouse.

0:39:12 > 0:39:16Now, after a £2,500 face-lift and

0:39:16 > 0:39:20a good dose of sunshine, Charlie's design has added structure,

0:39:20 > 0:39:24interest and a space to entertain family and friends.

0:39:28 > 0:39:31But the real test is what the clients think.

0:39:31 > 0:39:34Lisa and Anthony have invested heavily in this garden.

0:39:37 > 0:39:40Will they be able to see past the wind and rain to

0:39:40 > 0:39:42what their new garden will become?

0:39:47 > 0:39:49OK, you can open your eyes.

0:39:52 > 0:39:55- Oh, my God.- Is that a good "Oh, my God?"- Yes.

0:39:55 > 0:39:57Nearly cry a little "Oh, my God."

0:39:57 > 0:40:01- It looks amazing.- Yes? - Yeah, really good. Love it.

0:40:02 > 0:40:04Oh, big smiles, big smiles.

0:40:04 > 0:40:06Well, that's a relief.

0:40:06 > 0:40:08The pergola is very simple.

0:40:08 > 0:40:11It's going to get covered in yellow hops,

0:40:11 > 0:40:15pink climbing rose and white clematis.

0:40:15 > 0:40:16And that will create like

0:40:16 > 0:40:18a curtain effect here so you won't see

0:40:18 > 0:40:20the conservatory or your neighbours.

0:40:20 > 0:40:23I think the pergola really does work, doesn't it?

0:40:23 > 0:40:25I think, not only is it going to be an awesome green screen,

0:40:25 > 0:40:28but it just drags your eye right down to the corner, doesn't it?

0:40:28 > 0:40:29Yeah.

0:40:29 > 0:40:32And then this is your sun trap at the bottom of the garden.

0:40:32 > 0:40:35Now, these shrubs will get quite big, so this one's going to

0:40:35 > 0:40:41get to about six-foot-high, so this will create a real room here.

0:40:41 > 0:40:44- It's so lovely.- And then we've got your reading zone.

0:40:44 > 0:40:46Oh, yeah, I like this.

0:40:46 > 0:40:48- That's what we've called it. - Love it.

0:40:48 > 0:40:51The children can sit on the edge or sprawl in the centre.

0:40:51 > 0:40:54- Actually, I'm speechless. - THEY LAUGH

0:40:54 > 0:40:56I think he really loves it, doesn't he?

0:40:56 > 0:40:58Oh, it's really, yeah, yeah. It's incredible.

0:40:58 > 0:41:01It's good that all the hard work in the end paid off.

0:41:01 > 0:41:05And then when you look back, you've got a totally different view again.

0:41:05 > 0:41:08It's just, yeah, it's just transformed it.

0:41:08 > 0:41:12- I didn't imagine it would look quite this good.- We have a garden.- Yeah?

0:41:12 > 0:41:15Do you think this is going to be a big party area for Olivia?

0:41:15 > 0:41:17Definitely, yeah. I think we'll be out here a lot.

0:41:17 > 0:41:20- Good.- Absolutely brilliant. - It was a bit of a slog.

0:41:20 > 0:41:23- The weather wasn't on our side. - Definitely not.

0:41:23 > 0:41:26But fabulous planting weather. The plants will...

0:41:26 > 0:41:30- Yeah, they're going to reap the benefits.- ..thrive, yes.

0:41:30 > 0:41:34The large deck came at a cost of £1,200

0:41:34 > 0:41:38and is an extension of their stylish home, perfect for entertaining.

0:41:41 > 0:41:45The pergola does a great job of diverting attention away from

0:41:45 > 0:41:49the ugly warehouse, and was a steal at £300.

0:41:49 > 0:41:52It will look fabulous when clothed with floral climbers.

0:41:57 > 0:42:00The new patio is in the perfect spot for

0:42:00 > 0:42:04a sundowner at dusk, and came in at £560.

0:42:08 > 0:42:12And the sculpted grass doughnut is an unexpected bonus.

0:42:12 > 0:42:16A great place for Theo and Olivia to hang out with their friends.

0:42:16 > 0:42:18And best of all, it cost just 20 quid.

0:42:23 > 0:42:26Charlie designed this garden to give the family a space to enjoy

0:42:26 > 0:42:29together and with friends.

0:42:29 > 0:42:30Has she pulled it off?

0:42:32 > 0:42:35Kind of a bit lost for words, to be honest.

0:42:35 > 0:42:38It's more than I imagined it would be. I love it.

0:42:38 > 0:42:41- I love everything about it. - It's completion.

0:42:41 > 0:42:43The house is complete now.

0:42:43 > 0:42:46And, yeah, so happy, really, really happy.

0:42:47 > 0:42:50And do Lisa and Anthony think they got value for money?

0:42:51 > 0:42:54I think for missing one family holiday,

0:42:54 > 0:42:58we'll use that all summer if we get some nice weather. And next summer.

0:42:58 > 0:42:59And the year after.

0:42:59 > 0:43:01Yeah, we're going to have some memories in our back garden,

0:43:01 > 0:43:03so yeah, it's going to be great.

0:43:03 > 0:43:05- Definitely money well spent. - Definitely, yeah.
