0:00:02 > 0:00:06With her can-do attitude, love of simple gardens and decades of experience...

0:00:06 > 0:00:09- Hello!- ..Charlie Dimmock is one of Britain's best-loved gardeners.

0:00:09 > 0:00:12Looking good, boys!

0:00:12 > 0:00:15But the new kids on the gardening block are the Rich brothers.

0:00:15 > 0:00:19We want to be the brothers that change people's perceptions of gardens.

0:00:19 > 0:00:22Winners of multiple medals at the Chelsea Flower Show...

0:00:23 > 0:00:24Amazing, isn't it?

0:00:24 > 0:00:29..the boys have become known for their dramatic outdoor spaces.

0:00:29 > 0:00:34Now these two different generations of gardening are going head-to-head.

0:00:34 > 0:00:38I know they've got a gold medal, but I can come up with a few ideas!

0:00:38 > 0:00:42They're meeting frustrated garden owners across the country...

0:00:42 > 0:00:45The photos made it look tiny. It is, isn't it?

0:00:45 > 0:00:48- I'm sure you've seen larger! - I don't know what to do with it.

0:00:48 > 0:00:51..and will each pitch them a design based on their needs...

0:00:51 > 0:00:53- Wow!- ..and budget.

0:00:53 > 0:00:54It looks really exciting.

0:00:54 > 0:00:56This doesn't look like it could be our garden!

0:00:56 > 0:00:59- The winner...- Hey!

0:00:59 > 0:01:02- Woo! - ..brings their design to life.

0:01:02 > 0:01:04- Hold on, hold on! - Sweet as a nut!

0:01:04 > 0:01:07And the loser has to help them build it.

0:01:07 > 0:01:10I'm getting irritated now with faffing around!

0:01:10 > 0:01:11This is what happens...

0:01:11 > 0:01:14- Does he ever get irritating? - All the time!

0:01:14 > 0:01:16..when different styles collide...

0:01:16 > 0:01:18- Who chose these?- One, two, three...

0:01:19 > 0:01:21This looks like your design!

0:01:21 > 0:01:22Yeah!

0:01:22 > 0:01:25..to turn garden dreams into reality.

0:01:25 > 0:01:26Wow!

0:01:26 > 0:01:28- Open your eyes.- Wow!

0:01:29 > 0:01:30It's amazing.

0:01:30 > 0:01:32It's beautiful.

0:01:39 > 0:01:44It's time for Charlie and the Rich brothers to reveal today's challenge.

0:01:44 > 0:01:47What are our feelings on Japanese gardens?

0:01:47 > 0:01:49Oh, I love them.

0:01:49 > 0:01:50- Yeah?- Yeah, done in the right way.

0:01:50 > 0:01:55Well, Nic and Kath went on their honeymoon to Japan and just fell in love with it.

0:01:55 > 0:01:57They've since been back on holiday,

0:01:57 > 0:02:01which has just reinforced they want a Japanese garden.

0:02:02 > 0:02:07Graphic designer Kath and aeronautical engineer Nic moved into their home

0:02:07 > 0:02:08in Blackburn 18 months ago,

0:02:08 > 0:02:12and absolutely love everything Japanese,

0:02:12 > 0:02:13especially the gardens.

0:02:13 > 0:02:18I don't know what it is, but when you walk into them,

0:02:18 > 0:02:20it's so tranquil and calming.

0:02:20 > 0:02:24Yeah, and the first time round, we went in spring, so...

0:02:24 > 0:02:27We were so lucky, we got a load of cherry blossom.

0:02:27 > 0:02:31- That was nice.- We went to a place in Tokyo, it was like a temple,

0:02:31 > 0:02:34where they just grew peonies. So the whole thing was just peonies.

0:02:34 > 0:02:38- They all had little umbrellas. - And it only opens for, like, a couple of weeks

0:02:38 > 0:02:39when the peonies are in season.

0:02:39 > 0:02:42And then it'll be shut for the rest of year.

0:02:42 > 0:02:48And there's one feature that's a staple of the Japanese garden that Nic has a real passion for.

0:02:48 > 0:02:50- We like rocks.- I think I love rocks.

0:02:50 > 0:02:52You love rocks!

0:02:52 > 0:02:54I like rocks too. Yeah, big rocks.

0:02:54 > 0:02:56The bigger the better!

0:02:57 > 0:03:00They may have a taste for the Orient, but as it stands,

0:03:00 > 0:03:03there's nothing Zen about their garden.

0:03:03 > 0:03:04It's nice, it's just not us.

0:03:04 > 0:03:08- Yeah.- At the moment. There's not really anywhere to go in it.

0:03:08 > 0:03:10You just kind of, like, stand at the edges and look in.

0:03:10 > 0:03:12It's a mess.

0:03:12 > 0:03:15But the eagle-eyed designers have spotted some existing features

0:03:15 > 0:03:17that might help them with the brief.

0:03:19 > 0:03:22So, I mean, the birch sort of says Japanese.

0:03:22 > 0:03:24- Yeah.- And it looks like there's a few

0:03:24 > 0:03:27kind of Japanese-style rocks as well.

0:03:27 > 0:03:30In some ways, it's great there's ponds there.

0:03:30 > 0:03:33I mean, it might mean... Because Japanese gardens,

0:03:33 > 0:03:35it screams out for water, doesn't it?

0:03:35 > 0:03:39- Yes.- And they would love a Japanese teahouse!

0:03:39 > 0:03:41- Oh!- That sounds very nice. - Very cool idea, I like that.

0:03:42 > 0:03:44With a baby on the way,

0:03:44 > 0:03:48Kath and Nic won't be jetting back to the Land of the Rising Sun any time soon.

0:03:48 > 0:03:53So they want something authentically Japanese on their doorstep to tide them over.

0:03:55 > 0:03:58And they're prepared to spend to get what they want.

0:03:58 > 0:04:02Well, we've been saving up for a while and both of our grans passed away, sadly, last year.

0:04:02 > 0:04:05So they left us a little bit towards it.

0:04:05 > 0:04:09And I think that would be nice, to sort of say, you know,

0:04:09 > 0:04:12part of this is because of them.

0:04:12 > 0:04:15We've put 7,000 down, haven't we, for it.

0:04:15 > 0:04:18- It is a big space as well. - It's a massive space.

0:04:18 > 0:04:21I hope we don't end up with a six-grand rock!

0:04:21 > 0:04:22And then just a few plants!

0:04:22 > 0:04:24- I'd be happy with that!- I wouldn't!

0:04:26 > 0:04:31So we're combining rural Lancashire with Japan.

0:04:31 > 0:04:34- I- am a little nervous, you know, because they've been twice to Japan.

0:04:34 > 0:04:35I've never been. Have you been?

0:04:35 > 0:04:36- No.- Have you been?

0:04:36 > 0:04:40No. I'm glad they've come to us for the design, then!

0:04:42 > 0:04:44This garden has a great budget.

0:04:44 > 0:04:48But Charlie and the Rich brothers are well out of their comfort zone.

0:04:48 > 0:04:53They'll need to do their homework if their garden is going to match Kath and Nic's expectations.

0:04:57 > 0:05:00And their starting point is a trip to Blackburn,

0:05:00 > 0:05:02to see the garden for themselves.

0:05:04 > 0:05:07Don't remember it being quite as big as this!

0:05:07 > 0:05:09That's a lot of hard standing.

0:05:09 > 0:05:11It is, isn't it? That's a lot of concrete.

0:05:11 > 0:05:15- Crikey!- Yeah, this could be a bit complicated, I think.

0:05:15 > 0:05:17Pond's seen better days.

0:05:17 > 0:05:19It attracts wildlife at least - that's important!

0:05:19 > 0:05:22Yeah, that one doesn't fly off, does he?

0:05:22 > 0:05:23Lots of peonies.

0:05:23 > 0:05:25- Yes.- Tree peonies?

0:05:25 > 0:05:27Tree peonies, yes, very nice.

0:05:27 > 0:05:28- Quite Japanese, isn't it?- Very.

0:05:28 > 0:05:30And look at that view!

0:05:30 > 0:05:32Yes, that is stunning.

0:05:32 > 0:05:36- Quite exciting to have a bit of Tokyo here, isn't it?- Yes.

0:05:36 > 0:05:40The boys want to see if the couple's love for Japan

0:05:40 > 0:05:43extends to the inside of the house,

0:05:43 > 0:05:46while Charlie is keen to find out more about how Nic and

0:05:46 > 0:05:48Kath see the garden.

0:05:48 > 0:05:50Tell me about your love of Japan.

0:05:50 > 0:05:54I think we both really like the sort of, um...

0:05:54 > 0:05:57the way that the gardens in Japan have, like, a journey around them.

0:05:57 > 0:06:01- OK.- So, for you, it's more about the design rather than the plants?

0:06:01 > 0:06:06- Yes.- We saw a lot of plants there that were similar to what we have here.

0:06:06 > 0:06:09We more like the concept of the Japanese garden,

0:06:09 > 0:06:10but done in an English way.

0:06:10 > 0:06:12- Like a fusion.- Yeah.- OK.

0:06:12 > 0:06:15So keeping the Lancashire feel, because the view is fabulous!

0:06:15 > 0:06:16Yes.

0:06:16 > 0:06:18This is interesting.

0:06:18 > 0:06:22So the new garden could have some English elements to it.

0:06:22 > 0:06:25Inside, though, it's a different story.

0:06:25 > 0:06:28There's loads of wood. This dresser here, then you've got that down there.

0:06:28 > 0:06:31- There's loads of wooden structures. - Yet, very Japanesey.

0:06:32 > 0:06:35'There's nothing Lancastrian about this house.'

0:06:35 > 0:06:39That's something they obviously love in the house, so why not have it outside?

0:06:39 > 0:06:41What do you envisage the garden looking like?

0:06:41 > 0:06:45The idea we were initially trying to go for is like a journey,

0:06:45 > 0:06:48if you will, because, at the moment, it doesn't really go anywhere.

0:06:48 > 0:06:50There's paths that just vanish into the fence.

0:06:50 > 0:06:53Water is a really big part of the Japanese garden as well.

0:06:53 > 0:06:55- So that would be nice. - It's a big focal point for them.

0:06:55 > 0:06:58I did spot this table, absolutely love it.

0:06:58 > 0:07:01I love the way they've also put black and green together.

0:07:01 > 0:07:03It's got that kind of bamboo kind of feel.

0:07:03 > 0:07:06Definitely, I've never really seen that before, it's lovely.

0:07:06 > 0:07:12So you want a teahouse, a journey, you want a pond or a water feature...

0:07:12 > 0:07:13- Quite a lot, really!- We're greedy!

0:07:14 > 0:07:17When you ring it up like that, it's not a lot to ask for!

0:07:18 > 0:07:21I'm sure, between the three of us, we can come up with something.

0:07:23 > 0:07:25Exciting!

0:07:25 > 0:07:29£7,000 is a serious budget for this project.

0:07:29 > 0:07:33But the elegant manicured look of an authentic Japanese garden

0:07:33 > 0:07:36is extremely difficult to carry off.

0:07:36 > 0:07:38Especially in rural Lancashire.

0:07:44 > 0:07:48So it's time for Charlie and the boys to do their homework.

0:07:48 > 0:07:52They each have to come up with a garden design and pitch it to Kath and Nic,

0:07:52 > 0:07:54who will choose which one gets built.

0:07:56 > 0:07:58But it isn't over for the loser,

0:07:58 > 0:08:02as they have to get their hands dirty helping the winner build their garden.

0:08:04 > 0:08:07Here we go!

0:08:07 > 0:08:09Neither of our two designers have been to Japan.

0:08:11 > 0:08:13So can either of them win over Kath and Nic?

0:08:14 > 0:08:16- Hey, guys.- Hello!- Right!

0:08:16 > 0:08:19'It's time for the big pitch.'

0:08:20 > 0:08:22- Oh, wow!- This is our design.

0:08:22 > 0:08:24We really needed to create a garden

0:08:24 > 0:08:27that had a lovely balance between the natural landscape in which you live,

0:08:27 > 0:08:31but also the Japanese landscape which you're inspired by.

0:08:31 > 0:08:32So we've given you this journey,

0:08:32 > 0:08:35but we wanted to give you a destination at the end of the garden.

0:08:35 > 0:08:38The final destination is this teahouse,

0:08:38 > 0:08:41and what we've done here is we've created a kind of solid back with just an open door here.

0:08:41 > 0:08:44So, you know, you can't really see what's there,

0:08:44 > 0:08:47and it's about kind of obscuring the views of the beautiful landscape.

0:08:47 > 0:08:50So when you get there, it opens up.

0:08:50 > 0:08:51So this is like

0:08:51 > 0:08:56a walkway of timbers that are quite narrow,

0:08:56 > 0:09:00leading round and into your pavilion.

0:09:00 > 0:09:02- OK.- Something simple.

0:09:02 > 0:09:05It's going to look something like this.

0:09:05 > 0:09:07So off the pavilion we've got stepping stones

0:09:07 > 0:09:10that lead you on a journey around the garden,

0:09:10 > 0:09:12to this moon gate.

0:09:12 > 0:09:15Which is going to frame the view

0:09:15 > 0:09:21of maybe an Oriental lantern, or it could be a cloud-clipped holly.

0:09:21 > 0:09:24And then we'll have a teahouse here

0:09:24 > 0:09:29which'll be a shed that we've modified so the doors slide back like that.

0:09:29 > 0:09:31Wow.

0:09:31 > 0:09:33The boys are using their teahouse

0:09:33 > 0:09:36to frame the view of the surrounding countryside.

0:09:36 > 0:09:39But Charlie's offering two separate buildings.

0:09:39 > 0:09:42Will that impact on the other features she can provide?

0:09:44 > 0:09:46What's nice about this building as well is that

0:09:46 > 0:09:49we've done it so that it overhangs slightly on the pond.

0:09:49 > 0:09:52So, when you're sitting there, you feel that connection with the water.

0:09:52 > 0:09:55- Yeah.- The pond is bigger than you have now.

0:09:55 > 0:09:57So, you will lose some of the lawn.

0:09:57 > 0:09:58Yeah.

0:09:59 > 0:10:03Water is a crucial element in a Japanese garden.

0:10:03 > 0:10:06And both designers are planning to cantilever their teahouses

0:10:06 > 0:10:08over the pond.

0:10:08 > 0:10:12The next challenge was to give Nic some serious rocks to play with.

0:10:12 > 0:10:15We want to play around with this area and have these lovely, like,

0:10:15 > 0:10:18sculptural boulders that kind of sit within the spaces.

0:10:18 > 0:10:21We've got some large, sort of,

0:10:21 > 0:10:25really attractive rocks that then we just rake the gravel round.

0:10:27 > 0:10:32Both designs have boulders, but the boys have gone for bigger and better.

0:10:32 > 0:10:34But what about the Oriental planting?

0:10:34 > 0:10:36I want to show the seasons.

0:10:36 > 0:10:40So, cherry for the spring, peonies for the summer.

0:10:41 > 0:10:44Some evergreens as well.

0:10:44 > 0:10:46Cloud clip.

0:10:46 > 0:10:48Surrounding these individual areas,

0:10:48 > 0:10:50we've got these planting beds.

0:10:50 > 0:10:54We're having this modern take on the Japanese stepping stones.

0:10:54 > 0:10:56Then, within the planting,

0:10:56 > 0:11:00we wanted to pick out some ornamental cherry blossom trees, of course.

0:11:00 > 0:11:03- It's such a massive thing in Japanese gardens, isn't it? - It is, yeah.

0:11:03 > 0:11:06So, I hope you like it and it's not too twee!

0:11:06 > 0:11:10I think it captures everything Japanese.

0:11:11 > 0:11:13I'll leave you to think on it.

0:11:13 > 0:11:14OK.

0:11:16 > 0:11:19The couple are giving nothing away, and rightly so.

0:11:21 > 0:11:23With seven grand to spend,

0:11:23 > 0:11:27they need to choose a design that gives them everything they want.

0:11:30 > 0:11:33It's difficult, isn't it? I really like...

0:11:33 > 0:11:35I love the teahouse.

0:11:35 > 0:11:37I like the stones around this area.

0:11:37 > 0:11:39So, the other design,

0:11:40 > 0:11:43with the chilled-out teahouse with the water.

0:11:43 > 0:11:46Both of them, it's nice with the sort of reflection.

0:11:46 > 0:11:50Quite nice as well, because the teahouse faces...

0:11:52 > 0:11:54That way out of the garden, the rocks as well.

0:11:56 > 0:11:58It's hard, isn't it?

0:11:59 > 0:12:04All this couple want is a bit of Oriental Zen outside the back door.

0:12:04 > 0:12:07But which of the designs delivers it?

0:12:07 > 0:12:13Will it be Charlie, with her twisting path to two separate buildings and a moon gate?

0:12:13 > 0:12:14Or the Rich brothers,

0:12:14 > 0:12:18with their giant boulders and dramatic cherry trees?

0:12:18 > 0:12:20The decision is theirs.

0:12:20 > 0:12:23It's been a really tough decision,

0:12:23 > 0:12:25because you both kind of hit the nail on the head, really.

0:12:27 > 0:12:29That's good.

0:12:29 > 0:12:33But we've made a decision. And...

0:12:35 > 0:12:37BROTHERS: Yay!

0:12:37 > 0:12:39Perfect decision.

0:12:39 > 0:12:42It was the cherry trees that swung it!

0:12:43 > 0:12:45Awesome. Great news!

0:12:45 > 0:12:47What made you decide...

0:12:47 > 0:12:51Because this was probably something we wouldn't have done.

0:12:51 > 0:12:53There was quite a lot in it that we thought oh, gosh.

0:12:53 > 0:12:57- But actually...- It just feels like something that we'd just never be able to do ourselves.

0:12:57 > 0:12:59I hope we've made the right decision!

0:12:59 > 0:13:02- Yeah, you have!- It's good, it's good.- We're professionals!

0:13:03 > 0:13:06So, it's sayonara to Charlie's design,

0:13:06 > 0:13:09and down to the Rich brothers to deliver

0:13:09 > 0:13:11Kath and Nic's dream Oriental garden.

0:13:11 > 0:13:13But this is going to have to be a team effort,

0:13:13 > 0:13:16because not one of them has even set foot in Japan.

0:13:16 > 0:13:20Go on, crack on, then!

0:13:22 > 0:13:25It's a sunny start on day one of the build in Blackburn.

0:13:27 > 0:13:31Knowing how much Nic loves his Japanese rocks,

0:13:31 > 0:13:33the Rich brothers are off-site sourcing them...

0:13:35 > 0:13:38..leaving Paul and the landscaping team to start clearing out

0:13:38 > 0:13:40the existing garden.

0:13:40 > 0:13:44The only thing that will remain is that area of grass there.

0:13:44 > 0:13:47Everything else will be... It will look like a bomb's hit it.

0:13:49 > 0:13:53So the first thing that has to come out is the old pond.

0:13:54 > 0:13:57That's it, it's all coming off in one huge blanket.

0:14:01 > 0:14:04Before they can get rid of the old, preformed pond liner,

0:14:04 > 0:14:08any existing wildlife has to be carefully scooped out.

0:14:08 > 0:14:11More sludge, vicar. More sludge!

0:14:17 > 0:14:22Japanese gardens are full of symbolism, and use elements like ponds,

0:14:22 > 0:14:26bridges and paths to create miniature reproductions of natural scenery.

0:14:28 > 0:14:31Bridges to islands symbolise health and longevity.

0:14:32 > 0:14:34Paths are important too,

0:14:34 > 0:14:37as they lead visitors traditionally to different areas of the garden

0:14:37 > 0:14:39for quiet contemplation.

0:14:42 > 0:14:46Rocks are essential elements in a Japanese garden.

0:14:46 > 0:14:50They represent mountains, and are revered by some as sacred spirits.

0:14:52 > 0:14:54And so too is water,

0:14:54 > 0:14:59which symbolises cleanliness and is normally found in the form of natural ponds.

0:15:03 > 0:15:06In the boys' design, the pond is an irregular shape,

0:15:06 > 0:15:08and much larger than the one it's replacing.

0:15:10 > 0:15:12Is it tickling?

0:15:12 > 0:15:14So, with the team all cleared up...

0:15:14 > 0:15:15Now to the serious stuff!

0:15:18 > 0:15:21..it's down to Andy and the digger to do the heavy lifting

0:15:21 > 0:15:26and pull the rest of the pond up and then expand and reshape the hole.

0:15:31 > 0:15:35It kind of looks like someone dropped a bomb in it and it's just...

0:15:46 > 0:15:47Let's go!

0:15:49 > 0:15:52The next thing that has to come in is the base for the teahouse

0:15:52 > 0:15:56that will sit on stilts overlooking the pond.

0:15:56 > 0:15:57OK, I'm dropping it.

0:15:57 > 0:15:59Before any posts can go in,

0:15:59 > 0:16:01it needs to be correctly cited.

0:16:01 > 0:16:03It's bang on.

0:16:05 > 0:16:07That's never happened before.

0:16:09 > 0:16:14Meanwhile, the Rich brothers and Charlie have arrived out front.

0:16:14 > 0:16:17So, this has given me quite an interesting one today.

0:16:17 > 0:16:19Got some really big elements to put into this garden.

0:16:19 > 0:16:22And, you know, these boulders are going to take some moving.

0:16:22 > 0:16:24So, it's going to be about logistics.

0:16:24 > 0:16:26It's mega-logistics, this, isn't it?

0:16:26 > 0:16:28There was already a little pond and kind of boulders in there.

0:16:28 > 0:16:31We've taken them out, but we're putting a pond

0:16:31 > 0:16:33and we're putting bigger boulders in, so...

0:16:33 > 0:16:35But we're doing it really well.

0:16:35 > 0:16:36Yeah, so on the pond, please.

0:16:36 > 0:16:39Yeah, that's OK, then.

0:16:39 > 0:16:42Yeah. And then also salvaging lots of plants that are existing in the garden.

0:16:42 > 0:16:45Is that because you've spent all the money on the rocks?

0:16:45 > 0:16:47Well...

0:16:47 > 0:16:50- Yes.- Yeah, budget is definitely tight on this one.

0:16:50 > 0:16:51OK.

0:16:51 > 0:16:54I have to say, you do look like bosses today.

0:16:54 > 0:16:56Paint!

0:16:56 > 0:16:59- Too right!- Look at these pins!

0:16:59 > 0:17:01I'll be distracted all day.

0:17:01 > 0:17:03I'll hoist them up extra high, then.

0:17:03 > 0:17:05Don't, don't!

0:17:05 > 0:17:07Right, get on. Let's get on.

0:17:09 > 0:17:11Come on.

0:17:13 > 0:17:16Oh, that's...

0:17:16 > 0:17:20While Charlie considers the bomb crater Andy has created,

0:17:20 > 0:17:22the brothers are getting excited.

0:17:22 > 0:17:26The boulders that are crucial to their design are on their way.

0:17:26 > 0:17:28So, the boulders we've got coming.

0:17:28 > 0:17:30Andy knew a farmer in the Peak District,

0:17:30 > 0:17:31so a beautiful place in the country.

0:17:31 > 0:17:34And these rocks were in a middle of a field, overgrown, naturalised.

0:17:34 > 0:17:37Exactly what we wanted for this garden.

0:17:37 > 0:17:39We don't clearly know what they look like,

0:17:39 > 0:17:41because we've only seen them in pictures.

0:17:41 > 0:17:45So, you know, they were loaded up late last night and they're on their way now, so...

0:17:45 > 0:17:48Hopefully, hopefully, they will be what we imagined.

0:17:48 > 0:17:51Meanwhile, all the way from the Peak District, the rocks are here.

0:17:51 > 0:17:54And they are massive.

0:17:54 > 0:17:56They're amazing! Look at them!

0:17:56 > 0:17:59- Have we got enough garden to fit those rocks in?- Yes.

0:17:59 > 0:18:02You wait till you see them all together!

0:18:02 > 0:18:04- Stunning.- Put them on top of each other, they'll be fine.

0:18:04 > 0:18:07- They are amazing. Big old boys, aren't they?- They are.

0:18:09 > 0:18:11Which one's the little one? Oh, this one here.

0:18:11 > 0:18:12When you see the size of them...

0:18:12 > 0:18:15But what they'll do to the garden, I think they'll bring so much to it.

0:18:15 > 0:18:17Like depth, height.

0:18:17 > 0:18:19They will create an mini landscape with all these.

0:18:19 > 0:18:23It'll look like it's always been there. It gives kind of gravity to the space.

0:18:23 > 0:18:26I reckon Nic and Kath are going to be really kind of excited about seeing these.

0:18:26 > 0:18:29I think they don't really have an idea either, do they?

0:18:29 > 0:18:32I didn't have an idea they were this big, not even from the pictures,

0:18:32 > 0:18:34so I think they're going to be shocked!

0:18:34 > 0:18:36Beautiful as they are,

0:18:36 > 0:18:40waxing lyrical about them all day isn't going to get them into the garden.

0:18:40 > 0:18:42And with each one weighing over a tonne,

0:18:42 > 0:18:47the boys have to decide exactly where to put them before they can be moved.

0:18:47 > 0:18:50Him, by the pond. He'd look amazing by the pond.

0:18:50 > 0:18:53- Yeah.- Yeah.

0:19:03 > 0:19:06Out the back, Charlie's in familiar territory.

0:19:06 > 0:19:09So, it's pretty obvious this is the pond.

0:19:09 > 0:19:11So it's a lovely, simple shape.

0:19:11 > 0:19:15And I know the boys want to get some of those glorious rocks sort of

0:19:15 > 0:19:17touching the water.

0:19:17 > 0:19:19- Yes!- So, what's going on here, then?

0:19:19 > 0:19:23- Show me the...- That's where I've been, I've been out with my plan,

0:19:23 > 0:19:25doodling. Putting names to boulders.

0:19:25 > 0:19:27Have you? What do you mean, giving them names?

0:19:27 > 0:19:28What? George, Sharon...

0:19:28 > 0:19:30- Trapeze.- Trapeze!

0:19:30 > 0:19:32- Peg Tooth.- Peg Tooth.

0:19:32 > 0:19:35- Cow Poo.- Cow Poo?

0:19:35 > 0:19:36Big Round.

0:19:37 > 0:19:39So, we've got Trapeze.

0:19:39 > 0:19:43- Here.- Yeah, we just thought it would be nice actually bringing it into the water.

0:19:43 > 0:19:45So the level of the water will be about here,

0:19:45 > 0:19:47which is just beneath the deck.

0:19:47 > 0:19:50And then we're going to sink this boulder in so you don't

0:19:50 > 0:19:52really see the end of it. I think that'll be perfect.

0:19:52 > 0:19:56- It's going to be glorious, isn't it? - So this is going to be a really natural pond, isn't it?- Yes.

0:19:56 > 0:19:59'It's a good job Andy's got his digger.'

0:19:59 > 0:20:02You're just going to hit the tree there, Andy.

0:20:02 > 0:20:05Just go down as soon as possible.

0:20:07 > 0:20:10That's all right. That's OK, it's only the weeping bits.

0:20:10 > 0:20:13Whilst the boys play with their rocks,

0:20:13 > 0:20:17Charlie's commandeered Paul to help her line the pond.

0:20:17 > 0:20:20To start with, she's lining the hole with bonded fibre fleece.

0:20:21 > 0:20:24So, this material is synthetic.

0:20:24 > 0:20:26So it won't rot away.

0:20:27 > 0:20:32It's meshed so tightly together that roots and stones can't pierce through it.

0:20:32 > 0:20:36So it will really protect the rubber.

0:20:37 > 0:20:41The pond has been dug to a depth of 70 centimetres.

0:20:41 > 0:20:44Deep enough that the water won't freeze in the winter,

0:20:44 > 0:20:47so any wildlife will be protected.

0:20:47 > 0:20:48Right.

0:20:48 > 0:20:50Are we just going to do another layer with this, then?

0:20:52 > 0:20:56The first layer of fleece is topped with a rubber pond liner,

0:20:56 > 0:20:59and then another layer of fleece will be added on top of that.

0:20:59 > 0:21:02It gives the liner further protection.

0:21:02 > 0:21:04Would you rather do that bit first, over there?

0:21:04 > 0:21:06- No, do that bit there.- OK.

0:21:06 > 0:21:09Organising boys, it's like herding cats!

0:21:09 > 0:21:13There's quite a few cats on this job, aren't there, Charlie?

0:21:17 > 0:21:19Yeah, it is a bit...

0:21:19 > 0:21:21So, the next thing is get soil in.

0:21:24 > 0:21:29Adding soil back into the pond gives any plants something to root into.

0:21:36 > 0:21:40Good for the pond, not so good for Charlie's laundry bill.

0:21:44 > 0:21:46So, that's all we're sort of going for.

0:21:46 > 0:21:49Because a pond will naturally silt up.

0:21:49 > 0:21:52So you don't really want to fill it up with lots and lots of soil.

0:21:54 > 0:21:56Now the pond's prepped,

0:21:56 > 0:22:00the boulder that will sit on its banks can be manoeuvred into place.

0:22:02 > 0:22:04It is as clean as a whistle.

0:22:07 > 0:22:10Whereabouts is the water level going to be, exactly?

0:22:10 > 0:22:13Well, we reckon it's going to be about there.

0:22:13 > 0:22:14- OK.- So...

0:22:14 > 0:22:17Push him in down to about there, then he'll be well in, won't he?

0:22:17 > 0:22:19Yeah, so about here is the end of your point.

0:22:19 > 0:22:22At that point there would be lovely if it's there.

0:22:22 > 0:22:24It's so exciting!

0:22:25 > 0:22:28That's the one! Well done.

0:22:28 > 0:22:32Boulder in place, now it's time to fill the pond with water.

0:22:32 > 0:22:35If you just filled it with a hose whooshing in,

0:22:35 > 0:22:38it would stir all the soil up and it would look like a mud bath.

0:22:38 > 0:22:41If you want to reduce that effect,

0:22:41 > 0:22:44a bit like when you fill an aquarium when you've put the gravel in,

0:22:44 > 0:22:47we're going to put the hose on,

0:22:47 > 0:22:52but weight it down in the bucket so the bucket will slowly fill up and

0:22:52 > 0:22:53gently overflow.

0:22:53 > 0:22:57And hopefully it won't disturb too much of the soil.

0:22:57 > 0:23:00That's the theory, anyhow.

0:23:02 > 0:23:03OK, do you want to pop the hose on?

0:23:08 > 0:23:11So exciting, isn't it?

0:23:11 > 0:23:13It is, isn't it? Here it comes.

0:23:15 > 0:23:17Filling the pond will take a while,

0:23:17 > 0:23:22so the team crack on with the enormous job of placing the remaining boulders.

0:23:24 > 0:23:27This boulder coming in now, we've nicknamed the sleeping crocodile.

0:23:27 > 0:23:30Because, if you kind of get it at the right angle, it looks like a crocodile head.

0:23:30 > 0:23:33- With no eyes! - Well, they're closed, you know!

0:23:35 > 0:23:37Kind of.

0:23:37 > 0:23:38Twist it that way a bit.

0:23:40 > 0:23:42Little bit too much. Too much.

0:23:42 > 0:23:45Yeah, try that, try that, try that. It looks cool from here, anyway.

0:23:45 > 0:23:47Because you kind of pick up and pick up.

0:23:49 > 0:23:51But now they're here,

0:23:51 > 0:23:54the boulders are giving the brothers a different kind of headache.

0:23:55 > 0:23:57The cost of transporting them has meant

0:23:57 > 0:24:01that, if they were to include all the other elements of the design,

0:24:01 > 0:24:03the build will be over budget.

0:24:04 > 0:24:06So, to keep the costs on track,

0:24:06 > 0:24:08the boys have a suggestion for Kath and Nic.

0:24:08 > 0:24:10- Hello!- Hey, guys.

0:24:10 > 0:24:13- Hello!- How are we doing?- All right, yeah. Not too bad, not too bad!

0:24:13 > 0:24:15I have but one thing to say.

0:24:15 > 0:24:18Yeah. We have gone a tiny smidgen over the budget.

0:24:18 > 0:24:23- OK.- Which means that we haven't got enough money to buy the lintels,

0:24:23 > 0:24:25- the nice kind of contemporary concrete lintels.- OK.

0:24:25 > 0:24:27There are two options we've got.

0:24:27 > 0:24:32One of them would be to put in an extra £259 of your own money to buy the lintels.

0:24:32 > 0:24:34But we completely understand that's more money,

0:24:34 > 0:24:37- and you might not want to do that. - OK.

0:24:37 > 0:24:40In the boys' design, the lintels are used like stepping stones,

0:24:40 > 0:24:42but there's a cheaper alternative.

0:24:45 > 0:24:49We did find a lot of natural stone when we were digging out the pond,

0:24:49 > 0:24:53and so another idea would be we recycle the stone,

0:24:53 > 0:24:56which would fit in with the boulders and fit in with that natural look.

0:24:57 > 0:25:00But yeah. So it's weighing up those two.

0:25:00 > 0:25:03We've always liked the idea of the concrete lintels.

0:25:03 > 0:25:05- Yeah?- Yeah.

0:25:05 > 0:25:07Brilliant, lintels.

0:25:07 > 0:25:11Nice, guys. Great decision, and we can crack on now.

0:25:11 > 0:25:13- See you.- Thank you very much.

0:25:15 > 0:25:18'Nic doesn't look entirely happy with the extra spend.

0:25:18 > 0:25:21'The boys will have to hope he considers it a worthwhile investment

0:25:21 > 0:25:23'when he sees the finished garden.

0:25:26 > 0:25:28'Now they've got the go-ahead,

0:25:28 > 0:25:31'they get straight on with marking out where the lintels will go.'

0:25:31 > 0:25:33And that's where the gravel is going to go in,

0:25:33 > 0:25:35so it sits level with the soil.

0:25:35 > 0:25:37- Very Zen.- How wide is that?

0:25:37 > 0:25:42We are going to have two, four, 600, plus 300 is 900.

0:25:42 > 0:25:44So if you measure 900 off the deck.

0:25:44 > 0:25:46Then we've got the start.

0:25:46 > 0:25:48What are you laughing at?

0:25:48 > 0:25:51Your maths. I was just saying how impressed I was.

0:25:54 > 0:25:56Nice, Harry. That's good work.

0:25:58 > 0:26:02'Meanwhile, Andy and Lee have got the subframe for the teahouse in place.

0:26:02 > 0:26:05'The plan is for it to sit six inches over the edge of the pond.

0:26:06 > 0:26:08'But to get the perfect finish,

0:26:08 > 0:26:10'it's critical that none of the liner is visible.'

0:26:13 > 0:26:17All we are doing here is we are putting a bit of soil over the membranes.

0:26:17 > 0:26:19That is just a bit wide. And from over that side of the pond,

0:26:19 > 0:26:21you can just see underneath.

0:26:21 > 0:26:24The water level is going to raise a bit, but just to be sure,

0:26:24 > 0:26:27we want to cover it with a bit of mud, and then you won't notice it.

0:26:28 > 0:26:30Yeah, that's it.

0:26:30 > 0:26:31Oh, perfect.

0:26:34 > 0:26:37'This garden is slowly coming together, stone by stone.'

0:26:37 > 0:26:40So we've got the last boulder coming in now.

0:26:40 > 0:26:42It's been a really long day of bringing in

0:26:42 > 0:26:44these huge bits of stone.

0:26:44 > 0:26:49So it will be a nice day tomorrow of having all this in place,

0:26:49 > 0:26:52and we can start bringing the trees and plants in,

0:26:52 > 0:26:54and start creating different spaces.

0:27:01 > 0:27:03It's the next morning,

0:27:03 > 0:27:07and, although the sun has momentarily deserted the team,

0:27:07 > 0:27:10the next phase of hard landscaping is in full swing.

0:27:11 > 0:27:13Lee is assembling the uprights on the teahouse.

0:27:15 > 0:27:17And Andy's back on the digger.

0:27:17 > 0:27:19Andy! Put it by here.

0:27:20 > 0:27:22In the boys' design,

0:27:22 > 0:27:27a series of meandering paths will take Kath and Nic to different parts of their Oriental garden.

0:27:27 > 0:27:31These will be created from seven tonnes of fine gravel.

0:27:33 > 0:27:35I'm concerned.

0:27:35 > 0:27:38- Why? - You've got 20-plus tonnes of rocks,

0:27:38 > 0:27:41you've got seven tonnes of gravel.

0:27:41 > 0:27:45We've got loads of concrete lintels, and not a plant to be seen.

0:27:45 > 0:27:47Don't worry, Charlie.

0:27:47 > 0:27:49The boys have got it covered.

0:27:49 > 0:27:51Another big delivery has just arrived.

0:27:51 > 0:27:53Wowee!

0:27:53 > 0:27:55Lots of trees.

0:27:55 > 0:27:57That's good.

0:27:59 > 0:28:02I'll go and get the muscle.

0:28:02 > 0:28:04Wow!

0:28:04 > 0:28:05Beautiful.

0:28:07 > 0:28:13With a £7,000 budget, the boys have invested in mature plants.

0:28:13 > 0:28:17In a Japanese garden, the planting is often very architectural,

0:28:17 > 0:28:20with a smaller number of impact trees and shrubs.

0:28:20 > 0:28:25As its name suggests, the Japanese maple, or acer, is a stalwart.

0:28:27 > 0:28:31I think the wheel might need topping up a bit, don't you, with air?

0:28:31 > 0:28:33And stop!

0:28:33 > 0:28:34Japanese maple.

0:28:34 > 0:28:39It gets to two metres, so it is basically at full height.

0:28:39 > 0:28:40Gorgeous. I love the bark on it.

0:28:40 > 0:28:42It looks like bamboo, doesn't it?

0:28:42 > 0:28:45It does. So, where is it going, boys?

0:28:45 > 0:28:47I am just about to start chopping my liner.

0:28:51 > 0:28:55That was a bit more controlled than we were expecting!

0:28:55 > 0:28:59Before the acer can be planted, since the pond is now full of water,

0:28:59 > 0:29:01Charlie needs to neaten the edge of the pond liner

0:29:01 > 0:29:03by cutting off the excess.

0:29:03 > 0:29:06When it comes to trimming the liner back,

0:29:06 > 0:29:08people get a bit concerned about how much they need to leave.

0:29:08 > 0:29:12You really only need to leave four inches, five inches.

0:29:12 > 0:29:16That's plenty to anchor the liner in place.

0:29:16 > 0:29:19And it allows you to be able to plant right up to the pond edge.

0:29:24 > 0:29:27Meanwhile, the boys are placing the other trees,

0:29:27 > 0:29:29and they have decided to make some changes.

0:29:29 > 0:29:33In their design, cherry trees were dotted throughout,

0:29:33 > 0:29:36but to create a stronger link with the surrounding landscape,

0:29:36 > 0:29:38they have decided to go for more variety.

0:29:41 > 0:29:45Unfortunately, when the three cherry trees came, they were single stem

0:29:45 > 0:29:48and, in the design, we wanted to have a more natural look,

0:29:48 > 0:29:51and we don't want them to grow too large, so we opted for a multi-stem,

0:29:51 > 0:29:56so unfortunately we have decided to keep one of them, but the other two,

0:29:56 > 0:29:57we are going to send back.

0:29:57 > 0:30:00We have got the one cherry, which will give them the blossom,

0:30:00 > 0:30:02but we've got two smaller amelanchier, which blossoms,

0:30:02 > 0:30:05beautiful autumn colour, and links with the natural as well.

0:30:05 > 0:30:08And it is definitely a point of right tree or right plant for the right place.

0:30:08 > 0:30:12Those cherries were too tall, they were going to grow too large,

0:30:12 > 0:30:14so it is the right decision to just keep one of them.

0:30:17 > 0:30:21Whether as focal points, or for creating a journey in the garden,

0:30:21 > 0:30:24trees play a key role in Japanese garden design.

0:30:26 > 0:30:29In Blackburn, the brothers are carefully placing the trees

0:30:29 > 0:30:33to create a Zen-like feeling of calm in Nic and Kath's new garden.

0:30:34 > 0:30:39- There, have a look at that. - Yeah, I like that, because we have like a one, two, three.

0:30:40 > 0:30:43One of the best-known Japanese gardening styles

0:30:43 > 0:30:47is the cultivation of teeny, tiny trees known as bonsai.

0:30:49 > 0:30:54Richard Reah grows, buys and sells Japanese bonsai trees from

0:30:54 > 0:30:58his nursery - North of England Bonsai - in Yorkshire.

0:30:58 > 0:31:01The word bonsai means tree in a pot.

0:31:01 > 0:31:04It can be any tree, but preferably small leaved,

0:31:04 > 0:31:07so it's all kept in proportion.

0:31:07 > 0:31:10There's no point in having something like a chestnut tree

0:31:10 > 0:31:13with a great big leaf the size of your hand,

0:31:13 > 0:31:16and five leaves will cover the whole tree.

0:31:16 > 0:31:19Bonsais are created from young seedlings.

0:31:19 > 0:31:24As they mature, their roots are restricted and pruned, and growth is reduced.

0:31:24 > 0:31:30The aim is to produce a small tree that mimics the shape and style of a full-sized tree.

0:31:32 > 0:31:36They come with a reputation for being extremely high maintenance,

0:31:36 > 0:31:38which Richard feels is undeserved.

0:31:39 > 0:31:43Bonsais, in my opinion, are fairly easy, because they live outside.

0:31:45 > 0:31:48Here we have got windbreak around, because it is a very windy site,

0:31:48 > 0:31:52but a back garden would be ideal because it would be more sheltered.

0:31:52 > 0:31:53They are not as hard as people think.

0:31:53 > 0:31:57It is because people who have had them in the past have kept them indoors.

0:31:57 > 0:31:59They are not house plants.

0:31:59 > 0:32:03When it comes to pruning, Richard doesn't reach for the secateurs,

0:32:03 > 0:32:05but for smaller scissors instead.

0:32:05 > 0:32:09Anything growing up, you cut back,

0:32:09 > 0:32:11so you have got one, two.

0:32:11 > 0:32:16You cut that off there and it brings it back down to a reasonable height,

0:32:16 > 0:32:21so you have one bud there, one bud there, cut back.

0:32:21 > 0:32:23One, two, cut off.

0:32:23 > 0:32:28And as you can see, it brings it down into a nice shape.

0:32:28 > 0:32:32Anything hanging down, you remove it, so it is nice and neat underneath.

0:32:32 > 0:32:36So that opens it up so that light can get in there,

0:32:36 > 0:32:39and, the more light you have, the healthier the tree is.

0:32:41 > 0:32:45And if you fancy having a go, you had better be patient,

0:32:45 > 0:32:48as bonsai is no quick fix.

0:32:48 > 0:32:51Richard's mature bonsais are up to 80 years old.

0:32:56 > 0:32:59'In Blackburn, the brothers are carefully placing the trees

0:32:59 > 0:33:03'to create a Zen-like feeling of calm in Nic and Kath's new garden.'

0:33:05 > 0:33:09Just like the boulders, the trees have all got an individual character,

0:33:09 > 0:33:12so what we are trying to do is fit them best in the garden,

0:33:12 > 0:33:14and this big one here is a bit fuller,

0:33:14 > 0:33:16it is going to block out the view nicely,

0:33:16 > 0:33:19so what we are going to do is we are going to put him in here.

0:33:19 > 0:33:22I will grab him. So we are going to put him in his space here,

0:33:22 > 0:33:25and he will really block off the pond area, especially the acer,

0:33:25 > 0:33:29so you will have to walk the whole garden, move in to the tea house,

0:33:29 > 0:33:32and then you will be able to see it, all will be revealed.

0:33:32 > 0:33:34'While the boys play around with the trees,

0:33:34 > 0:33:38'Charlie is finishing the pond to prepare it for planting.'

0:33:39 > 0:33:42It is a bit of a faff, but it's worth taking your time.

0:33:45 > 0:33:48Cos, of course, we've got lots of time. We haven't got much to do(!)

0:33:48 > 0:33:50Just a little planting.

0:33:50 > 0:33:53About 600 plants!

0:33:53 > 0:33:57It'll look great. It might be dark, but it will look great.

0:34:04 > 0:34:06- Oh, that is perfect, isn't it? Stunning.- Yeah.

0:34:10 > 0:34:13'With so many plants to find a home for,

0:34:13 > 0:34:16'Charlie starts with the aquatic ones for the pond.'

0:34:17 > 0:34:19When it comes to your pond,

0:34:19 > 0:34:22you want it to stay clear by just using plants,

0:34:22 > 0:34:24you need three different types.

0:34:24 > 0:34:29You need marginals, so we've got the water mint, we've got the irises.

0:34:29 > 0:34:32You need oxygenators, which aren't overly pretty,

0:34:32 > 0:34:34but they do a really good job,

0:34:34 > 0:34:37and then you need something to shade the water surface,

0:34:37 > 0:34:40and these have got to be the easiest plants in the world...

0:34:41 > 0:34:43to plant. There you go!

0:34:44 > 0:34:48They will sink down and root into the soil that we put over there,

0:34:48 > 0:34:50so this is the oxygenator.

0:34:50 > 0:34:53You want half the base eventually covered with oxygenators,

0:34:53 > 0:34:57and about half the surface covered with lily pad leaves.

0:34:57 > 0:35:02And, that way, the pond will stay clear and balanced and support wildlife quite happily.

0:35:04 > 0:35:08Nic and Kath's garden is finally coming together.

0:35:08 > 0:35:09The rocks are all in place.

0:35:09 > 0:35:11The trees are in.

0:35:11 > 0:35:13Charlie's pond is taking shape,

0:35:13 > 0:35:17and Lee is busy constructing the walls of the new teahouse.

0:35:18 > 0:35:21- That's the bottom, is it?- Yeah.

0:35:22 > 0:35:28And the concrete lintels that Kath and Nic paid extra for are starting to be laid.

0:35:28 > 0:35:30To me. Ten mill, five mill.

0:35:33 > 0:35:36Stepping stones are often used in Japanese gardens,

0:35:36 > 0:35:40as they slow down movement around the space, and encourage contemplation.

0:35:42 > 0:35:45Once you get this sorted, it goes down really quickly.

0:35:45 > 0:35:46That is bang on.

0:35:46 > 0:35:50The boys are trying a bit of Yin and Yang of their own,

0:35:50 > 0:35:52using the rectangular shape of the lintels

0:35:52 > 0:35:55to contrast with the curves of the path.

0:35:57 > 0:36:00Meanwhile, Charlie is on to the last stage of her pond planting,

0:36:00 > 0:36:03and she has got a neat trick for submerging her water lilies.

0:36:06 > 0:36:09Normally, you would plant water lilies up in containers like this,

0:36:09 > 0:36:13baskets, but because we want them to look as natural as possible,

0:36:13 > 0:36:17I am going to plant them up in a piece of hessian.

0:36:17 > 0:36:19First, she gets a hessian square,

0:36:19 > 0:36:21adds pebbles to weigh the sack down,

0:36:21 > 0:36:26then adds soil, and the plant itself, with the crown poking out.

0:36:26 > 0:36:27Then ties it all up in a parcel.

0:36:33 > 0:36:35And then it's just a case of throwing them in.

0:36:35 > 0:36:38They will sink to the bottom,

0:36:38 > 0:36:41and then the plants themselves can root down in the soil

0:36:41 > 0:36:43that we have put on the bottom of the pond.

0:36:46 > 0:36:48It is then a case

0:36:48 > 0:36:52of gently placing them in the deepest bit of the pond.

0:36:55 > 0:36:59And the one last thing I've got to do is put some of the wildlife

0:36:59 > 0:37:01back in the pond that we saved.

0:37:01 > 0:37:05All the frogs left, but there's one or two tadpoles in here.

0:37:12 > 0:37:16Meanwhile, Lee has finished the component parts of the teahouse,

0:37:16 > 0:37:18so they are ready to be fixed into place.

0:37:18 > 0:37:24But this is a sturdy structure, so all the lads, including our director, Rich,

0:37:24 > 0:37:26are needed to get the roof on.

0:37:26 > 0:37:28My armpit!

0:37:29 > 0:37:34It seemed a really good idea to build it outside and then carry it in!

0:37:34 > 0:37:37I'm sure someone is going to end up straight in there!

0:37:42 > 0:37:43It don't fit! Take it back!

0:37:44 > 0:37:46Oh!

0:37:46 > 0:37:48- Yeah!- All right!

0:37:51 > 0:37:52Not one of them in the pond.

0:37:52 > 0:37:56Mind you, they would have been in so much trouble, I tell you now!

0:37:58 > 0:38:00'But there's no time to let the muscles recover.

0:38:00 > 0:38:04'It's all hands on deck to get the remaining plants in the ground.

0:38:06 > 0:38:10'The boys have designed beds to flank the sinuous path around the garden...

0:38:12 > 0:38:15'and are now focusing on shrubs like this rhododendron.'

0:38:15 > 0:38:18What I have done is I have placed it here next to the boulder,

0:38:18 > 0:38:22and that is all because, in nature, you'd find that they are quite shallow rooted,

0:38:22 > 0:38:24and they grow over rocks and, in a Japanese garden,

0:38:24 > 0:38:26it's all about replicating the larger landscape,

0:38:26 > 0:38:28but putting it into your own garden.

0:38:28 > 0:38:29'As well as the shrubs,

0:38:29 > 0:38:33'the brothers have chosen a mix of grasses and flowers

0:38:33 > 0:38:37'that will add texture to Nic and Kath's garden across the seasons.

0:38:39 > 0:38:42'Charlie's making good use of all the salvaged plants

0:38:42 > 0:38:46'from around the old pond by creating a border behind the new one.

0:38:54 > 0:38:57'Meanwhile, now the main structure's in place,

0:38:57 > 0:39:00'Lee's cracking on with the sides of the teahouse.

0:39:00 > 0:39:05'He and the brothers have come up with an easy way to give it an Oriental feel,

0:39:05 > 0:39:10'using simple wooden batons, but there's plenty of them, so Harry and David give him a hand.'

0:39:14 > 0:39:15Nice and tight.

0:39:32 > 0:39:36With a final push from the team on the planting,

0:39:36 > 0:39:39and a last whack from the whacker plate,

0:39:39 > 0:39:41this garden is done.

0:39:48 > 0:39:50In a previous life,

0:39:50 > 0:39:54Kath and Nic's garden was a mishmash of tired, old features.

0:39:59 > 0:40:03Now it's had a £7,000 transformation.

0:40:03 > 0:40:08And Harry and David's design has turned it into a Japanese-inspired oasis.

0:40:10 > 0:40:12Harry and David have created a path

0:40:12 > 0:40:14using a modern take on Japanese stepping stones

0:40:14 > 0:40:17in the form of these concrete lintels.

0:40:18 > 0:40:20With the gravel, they cost £535,

0:40:20 > 0:40:24and create a journey around the space.

0:40:29 > 0:40:33The teahouse is delicate and elegant...

0:40:33 > 0:40:35and cost £650.

0:40:35 > 0:40:40From here, Kath and Nic can watch the sun go down on their new garden.

0:40:43 > 0:40:47The pond is a beautiful link to the landscape beyond the garden,

0:40:47 > 0:40:50and cost £600 for the liner and the plants.

0:40:50 > 0:40:53In no time at all, it will look like it has been there forever.

0:40:54 > 0:40:58The trees and plants have added to the Japanese theme,

0:40:58 > 0:41:01and will provide screening and colour all year round.

0:41:02 > 0:41:05The boys went for an instant impact with mature varieties,

0:41:05 > 0:41:09at a combined cost of £2,700.

0:41:10 > 0:41:13And the piece de resistance of the huge rocks.

0:41:13 > 0:41:16They add drama and structure to this space,

0:41:16 > 0:41:18but that drama doesn't come cheap,

0:41:18 > 0:41:22and the rocks put a £2,500 dent in the budget.

0:41:22 > 0:41:26But the real test is what the clients think.

0:41:26 > 0:41:28Here they come.

0:41:28 > 0:41:31Please open your eyes and have a look.

0:41:31 > 0:41:33Whoa!

0:41:33 > 0:41:34Wow.

0:41:36 > 0:41:39- What do you think? - It's not our garden!

0:41:39 > 0:41:40It's completely different.

0:41:40 > 0:41:42Wow.

0:41:42 > 0:41:45And the boulders? What do you think about the boulders?

0:41:45 > 0:41:47Oh, they're amazing.

0:41:47 > 0:41:48Yeah, they're big enough.

0:41:48 > 0:41:51They have got moss on and everything.

0:41:51 > 0:41:52Oh, wow.

0:41:53 > 0:41:55Definitely like the rocks.

0:41:55 > 0:41:57Wowzers.

0:41:57 > 0:42:01And you enter the teahouse, and here's the new pond.

0:42:01 > 0:42:03Can you imagine spending some time here?

0:42:03 > 0:42:06Absolutely, yes. The pond looks so natural as well.

0:42:06 > 0:42:07It's gorgeous.

0:42:07 > 0:42:09It's quite tranquil here, as well.

0:42:09 > 0:42:10Do you feel Zen?

0:42:10 > 0:42:13This is very much like some of the rooms in Japan.

0:42:13 > 0:42:15It's perfect.

0:42:15 > 0:42:17Does it bring back fond memories of when you were in Japan?

0:42:17 > 0:42:19It does, yeah.

0:42:19 > 0:42:23- Definitely.- There is a little route around that we haven't explored yet.

0:42:23 > 0:42:24So it is quite a big budget, guys,

0:42:24 > 0:42:27so are you happy that we spent the money well?

0:42:27 > 0:42:31- Absolutely, yes.- I think it's the best money we've spent.

0:42:31 > 0:42:34It's like getting another room from the house, really, isn't it?

0:42:35 > 0:42:36When it's sunny!

0:42:37 > 0:42:39We would never have done this ourselves, ever.

0:42:39 > 0:42:41We would have never got to this.

0:42:41 > 0:42:42It's brilliant.

0:42:44 > 0:42:47I think Kath and Nic are really going to enjoy the journey from the

0:42:47 > 0:42:51teahouse, the water, they've got their gravel spaces where they can dine,

0:42:51 > 0:42:54they have got the large planting beds, they've got the boulders.

0:42:54 > 0:42:57It's just that whole concept that you can't see it all at once,

0:42:57 > 0:42:59and that you can enjoy the details on the journey.

0:42:59 > 0:43:04For me, the best bit of the garden is the tea pavilion,

0:43:04 > 0:43:07the tranquil setting overhanging the pond

0:43:07 > 0:43:11with the sunset and the view.

0:43:11 > 0:43:13I think it's perfect.

0:43:13 > 0:43:15I love it. Love it.

0:43:15 > 0:43:17Absolutely love it.
