0:00:02 > 0:00:04With her can-do attitude, love of simple gardens

0:00:04 > 0:00:06and decades of experience...

0:00:06 > 0:00:10- Hello!- ..Charlie Dimmock is one of Britain's best loved gardeners.

0:00:10 > 0:00:12Looking good, boys.

0:00:12 > 0:00:16But the new kids on the gardening block are the Rich brothers.

0:00:16 > 0:00:19We want to be the brothers that change people's perceptions of gardens.

0:00:19 > 0:00:22Winners of multiple medals at the Chelsea Flower Show...

0:00:22 > 0:00:24- Oh, good turn.- Amazing, isn't it?

0:00:24 > 0:00:29..the boys have become known for their dramatic outdoor spaces.

0:00:29 > 0:00:34Now, these two different generations of gardening are going head-to-head.

0:00:34 > 0:00:38I know they've got a gold medal, but I can come up with a few ideas.

0:00:38 > 0:00:42They're meeting frustrated garden owners across the country...

0:00:42 > 0:00:44The photos made it look tiny.

0:00:44 > 0:00:47- It is, isn't it? - I'm sure you've seen larger.

0:00:47 > 0:00:50- I don't know what to do with it. - ..and will each pitch them a design

0:00:50 > 0:00:52- based on their needs...- Wow!

0:00:52 > 0:00:54- ..and budget. - That looks really exciting.

0:00:54 > 0:00:56It doesn't look like it could be our garden.

0:00:56 > 0:00:59- The winner...- Ta-da!

0:00:59 > 0:01:00Woo!

0:01:00 > 0:01:02..brings their design to life.

0:01:02 > 0:01:03Hold on, hold on!

0:01:03 > 0:01:07- Sweet as a nut.- And the loser has to help them build it.

0:01:07 > 0:01:10Oh, I'm getting irritated now with faffing around.

0:01:10 > 0:01:12This is what happens...

0:01:12 > 0:01:14- Does he ever get irritating? - All the time.

0:01:14 > 0:01:16..when different styles collide...

0:01:16 > 0:01:19- Who chose these?- One, two, three.

0:01:20 > 0:01:23- This looks like your design.- Yeah.

0:01:23 > 0:01:26..to turn garden dreams into reality.

0:01:26 > 0:01:28- Wow!- Open your eyes.

0:01:28 > 0:01:31Wow! It's amazing.

0:01:31 > 0:01:32It's beautiful.

0:01:38 > 0:01:42It's time for Charlie and the Rich brothers to discover whose garden

0:01:42 > 0:01:44they'll be battling over this time.

0:01:44 > 0:01:46If you look up blank canvas in the dictionary,

0:01:46 > 0:01:49I think this garden may crop up.

0:01:49 > 0:01:52We've got Lewis and Rhys and they recently moved into a new build in

0:01:52 > 0:01:55Stoke-on-Trent, and they've made their house their own, but they're

0:01:55 > 0:01:58struggling with inspiration for the garden.

0:02:00 > 0:02:03Lewis, an HR advisor, and Rhys, a catering manager,

0:02:03 > 0:02:06both work full-time and for the last couple of years

0:02:06 > 0:02:10have dedicated all their spare time and money to creating their perfect

0:02:10 > 0:02:14- home.- We've spent so long doing the house and decorating that

0:02:14 > 0:02:16and prioritising that,

0:02:16 > 0:02:20- that we kind of forgot about the garden.- I wouldn't call it a garden.

0:02:20 > 0:02:23Yeah, that's definitely not a garden, what's out there at the moment.

0:02:24 > 0:02:26It's just a mud bath.

0:02:26 > 0:02:28Really, really muddy,

0:02:28 > 0:02:32waterlogged and waiting for us to do something with it.

0:02:33 > 0:02:37This space is barely a garden at all.

0:02:37 > 0:02:40The only things living in it are a few blades of grass,

0:02:40 > 0:02:43the odd weed and the couple's bunny rabbit, Milo.

0:02:45 > 0:02:49We're not very creative in the sense of we knew we'd want somewhere to

0:02:49 > 0:02:53entertain, but how to make that look really good,

0:02:53 > 0:02:55we're not full of ideas.

0:02:55 > 0:02:57I think that's a problem with these new builds.

0:02:57 > 0:02:59Everyone can see what they're going to do with the house, with

0:02:59 > 0:03:03individual rooms, but when it comes to the garden, when they're given four fence panels...

0:03:03 > 0:03:07- It's going to be daunting, probably, isn't it?- You can see why they've had problems.

0:03:07 > 0:03:10- It's "where do you start?" - Yeah.- Yeah.

0:03:10 > 0:03:15Not only that, but Rhys and Lewis don't always see eye to eye.

0:03:16 > 0:03:19I like really minimalistic and modern, a bit different.

0:03:19 > 0:03:22Whereas I'm not so much. Definitely play it safe.

0:03:22 > 0:03:24We have differences of opinion sometimes, don't we?

0:03:24 > 0:03:28Not liking the same colours, not liking the same furniture,

0:03:28 > 0:03:29the list is endless.

0:03:29 > 0:03:31THEY LAUGH

0:03:32 > 0:03:36But two years of disagreeing and dithering has enabled the couple

0:03:36 > 0:03:39to save a tidy sum for the garden makeover.

0:03:39 > 0:03:42- And the budget is...? - The budget is £4,000.

0:03:42 > 0:03:43- Oh!- That's quite healthy, isn't it?

0:03:43 > 0:03:47- It's quite healthy. It's not a huge garden, is it?- No, not at all, no.

0:03:47 > 0:03:51The possibility of a four grand budget to do up this space

0:03:51 > 0:03:53has whetted our designers' appetites.

0:03:53 > 0:03:57But their design will have to win over both Rhys and Lewis,

0:03:57 > 0:03:59and that won't be easy.

0:04:02 > 0:04:05It's time for Charlie and the Rich brothers to go head-to-head

0:04:05 > 0:04:08for the chance to make over Lewis and Rhys' garden.

0:04:08 > 0:04:11So they're heading to Stoke to meet the couple and see the garden for

0:04:11 > 0:04:17themselves. But the size of the challenge is making them nervous.

0:04:17 > 0:04:19Now, with a new build,

0:04:19 > 0:04:23you can normally say you're going to get some decent fences

0:04:23 > 0:04:24and a good bit of lawn.

0:04:24 > 0:04:27Looking at the pictures on this one, no.

0:04:32 > 0:04:34- Wow!- Wow, yeah.

0:04:34 > 0:04:37- That is the word, isn't it?- Blimey.

0:04:38 > 0:04:41What happened to the grass? No grass at all.

0:04:41 > 0:04:43- You've got stinging nettles, though. Don't complain.- One or two.

0:04:43 > 0:04:46Not the only life in the garden. Some rabbit droppings.

0:04:46 > 0:04:49- Yeah.- There's nothing, is there? - No.- That's the first thing.

0:04:49 > 0:04:51You walk in, you go, "Whoa, fences."

0:04:51 > 0:04:54They're the only thing in the garden.

0:04:54 > 0:04:56And also other houses.

0:04:56 > 0:04:58It looks like they've tried to sit out.

0:04:58 > 0:05:00- It's not inspiring, is it? - No, not at all.

0:05:00 > 0:05:02It's not inspiring in any way.

0:05:02 > 0:05:04- I think we've seen it all. - It didn't take long.

0:05:04 > 0:05:07- Didn't take long at all. - But it's not all bad news.

0:05:07 > 0:05:09It's a good shape, though.

0:05:09 > 0:05:12Yes, it is quite manageable so I think maybe, you know, design wise,

0:05:12 > 0:05:16- it's going to be quite interesting. - And strong boundaries, which helps.

0:05:16 > 0:05:19Normally at this point, the boys like to snoop around inside to find out

0:05:19 > 0:05:21more about the couple's taste,

0:05:21 > 0:05:23whilst Charlie gets to know them.

0:05:23 > 0:05:26Hello. It's a bit unusual.

0:05:26 > 0:05:30But this time, to make it interesting, they're swapping roles.

0:05:30 > 0:05:32So is there anything that you know you'd like in the garden?

0:05:32 > 0:05:36- Any kind of style? - I was thinking Mediterranean theme.

0:05:36 > 0:05:39So from holidays in the Canary Islands and stuff.

0:05:39 > 0:05:42Things that spring to mind are cordylines, yuccas, that kind of...

0:05:42 > 0:05:44Yeah, yeah, colour, give it a bit of shape.

0:05:44 > 0:05:48- Quite architectural, quite contemporary, aren't they? - Lots of modern and different.

0:05:48 > 0:05:49Not your normal garden.

0:05:49 > 0:05:52Quite young, quite interesting.

0:05:52 > 0:05:56Inside, Charlie has made a useful discovery.

0:05:56 > 0:05:57Wow!

0:05:57 > 0:05:59Now this is nice.

0:05:59 > 0:06:03Rhys and Lewis have very particular taste.

0:06:06 > 0:06:10Greys with the silver, purples and the darker purples.

0:06:10 > 0:06:12All flows and matches.

0:06:12 > 0:06:16Really nice, clean lines on the lights.

0:06:16 > 0:06:19Definitely has a wow factor to it.

0:06:19 > 0:06:23What are you guys looking forward to doing the most when it's all done,

0:06:23 > 0:06:27- finished and looking beautiful? - We're really looking forward to having our friends round,

0:06:27 > 0:06:31enjoying the sunshine. Get the summer. Just to make the most of the space because at the moment,

0:06:31 > 0:06:34we're living indoors because outside isn't very attractive at all,

0:06:34 > 0:06:36as you've seen. We're looking forward to that extra bit of space,

0:06:36 > 0:06:39aren't we? That chance to mingle with friends, have a barbecue.

0:06:39 > 0:06:42We bought a barbecue two years ago. It's still in its box.

0:06:42 > 0:06:44THEY LAUGH

0:06:44 > 0:06:48So this definitely needs to be a social space, but inside,

0:06:48 > 0:06:51something else has caught Charlie's attention.

0:06:51 > 0:06:54Oh, I like the mirror. I can't see myself in it,

0:06:54 > 0:06:57which is a good thing, but that's really cool.

0:06:57 > 0:07:02Lewis and Rhys clearly love to make a statement.

0:07:02 > 0:07:04I think it's got a lot of potential, anyway.

0:07:04 > 0:07:07It's a lovely size and it's very blank.

0:07:07 > 0:07:12- Very blank.- I think we'll get a blank piece of paper out and get cracking, I think.

0:07:12 > 0:07:15There's a lot here for the designers to consider.

0:07:15 > 0:07:17Rhys and Lewis' house is very distinctive,

0:07:17 > 0:07:20but they fancy a garden that's Mediterranean.

0:07:20 > 0:07:22Creating a dream space for them,

0:07:22 > 0:07:26even for four grand, is not going to be easy.

0:07:30 > 0:07:34So our rival designers get straight to work.

0:07:34 > 0:07:37Each of them will come up with the design for Lewis and Rhys' garden

0:07:37 > 0:07:40that will work within their budget.

0:07:40 > 0:07:43The couple then have to choose a winner, and whoever loses

0:07:43 > 0:07:46will have to help the winner build the garden.

0:07:50 > 0:07:52So, who will the couple go for?

0:07:52 > 0:07:54Right, here we go.

0:07:54 > 0:07:57Will it be Charlie, who isn't known for her modern gardens but has seen

0:07:57 > 0:08:00that the couple's house has the wow factor?

0:08:01 > 0:08:05- Yes? Interesting.- Wow.

0:08:05 > 0:08:09Or the boys, who are known for their contemporary spaces but might

0:08:09 > 0:08:11struggle with the Mediterranean theme?

0:08:11 > 0:08:14That's our design.

0:08:14 > 0:08:16Who's got the measure of this one?

0:08:18 > 0:08:20From looking round the house,

0:08:20 > 0:08:24you've got some very strong, simple lines.

0:08:24 > 0:08:29It's very stylish and stylised, so I've gone with that in the design.

0:08:29 > 0:08:34- Yeah.- I've grasped the fact that you want this contemporary, stylish,

0:08:34 > 0:08:38social outdoor space that's really going to entice you inside the house to outside.

0:08:38 > 0:08:42This is going to be a lovely area to sit in the morning, but then

0:08:42 > 0:08:44this area of an evening, a bigger area.

0:08:44 > 0:08:47You can spill down onto the lawn.

0:08:47 > 0:08:51And the deck, I was going to go with cedar, and rather than have it

0:08:51 > 0:08:54parallel like that, I've got it on a diagonal.

0:08:54 > 0:08:57Stops it looking like a pallet, all right?

0:08:57 > 0:09:00As you can see with the design, we've created two levels.

0:09:00 > 0:09:03We've created this lovely kind of entertainment space.

0:09:03 > 0:09:07It's got two sofas, a fire bowl and you can really sit down and relax.

0:09:07 > 0:09:10We've increased the terrace space. It gives you plenty of room for the

0:09:10 > 0:09:13barbecue, so you can finally put that together and get it out there.

0:09:13 > 0:09:17While the boys are playing it safe with the structure of their garden,

0:09:17 > 0:09:18Charlie is upping the ante.

0:09:18 > 0:09:23She's remembered that the couple are overlooked in their new build.

0:09:23 > 0:09:26To give you some privacy,

0:09:26 > 0:09:28I've got a very simple cedar pergola,

0:09:28 > 0:09:30and then we've got a couple of...

0:09:30 > 0:09:33They're called small trees, they're actually large shrubs.

0:09:33 > 0:09:35One's a Cornus controversa.

0:09:35 > 0:09:39It's lovely because the leaves are quite small, so it doesn't create a lot

0:09:39 > 0:09:41of dense shade, so you can still plant underneath it.

0:09:41 > 0:09:44But it has a beautiful shape to it. In that corner,

0:09:44 > 0:09:47an evergreen that will screen out those roofs.

0:09:47 > 0:09:49Arbutus. It's known as the strawberry tree.

0:09:49 > 0:09:53- Oh, right.- It has flowers and fruit at the same time.

0:09:54 > 0:09:56But not to be outdone,

0:09:56 > 0:09:59the boys have done their homework too, incorporating the holiday theme

0:09:59 > 0:10:01into the planting.

0:10:01 > 0:10:05The social area is surrounded by Mediterranean style planting,

0:10:05 > 0:10:08so we want to use things that you like, like cordylines and phormiums.

0:10:08 > 0:10:12We're straying away from cottage style and into soft and floral and giving you

0:10:12 > 0:10:15that real flavour of the Mediterranean, bringing back some good memories of holidays.

0:10:15 > 0:10:17And we've also put in two trees

0:10:17 > 0:10:19and three shrubs, and they're great for vertical interest.

0:10:19 > 0:10:22Just gives it a bit of architecture in the garden

0:10:22 > 0:10:23and great for privacy as well.

0:10:23 > 0:10:27- When you're sitting down here, you feel a bit more immersed, a bit more private.- Yeah.

0:10:27 > 0:10:29Rhys and Lewis like what they see,

0:10:29 > 0:10:32but Charlie is about to play her trump card.

0:10:32 > 0:10:35I'd like to give you the structure of the garden, but your taste is

0:10:35 > 0:10:37quite different from mine.

0:10:37 > 0:10:41Personally, I would go for focal points, something like this,

0:10:41 > 0:10:46but I can see that's not your type of thing, so I have three focal points.

0:10:46 > 0:10:49One here, back-dropped with Mediterranean planting.

0:10:49 > 0:10:54One here and one over there, so when you're sat on the patio or sat here,

0:10:54 > 0:10:59you can see them. But I would like you to take that budget of about £150

0:10:59 > 0:11:04for each one and buy a piece of art or something that you would like to see...

0:11:04 > 0:11:08- Wow!- ..in the garden.- Interesting.

0:11:08 > 0:11:11Charlie's giving the couple a chance to make their own mark on the garden.

0:11:13 > 0:11:15But will it sway them?

0:11:16 > 0:11:19What's your initial impression of this one, then?

0:11:19 > 0:11:22I liked this. I like how they've got a separate seating area up here.

0:11:22 > 0:11:25I like how it's covered at the back.

0:11:25 > 0:11:28- There's lots of stuff going on. Lots of different shapes. - What do you think about this one?

0:11:28 > 0:11:30It's very modern, isn't it?

0:11:30 > 0:11:34- There's lots going on.- I like how it's all enclosed in the one area.

0:11:34 > 0:11:35I like the seating area.

0:11:35 > 0:11:38Concrete is a nice look, personally, I think.

0:11:38 > 0:11:41- You see, I'm not sure about that. - Oh, right, OK.

0:11:41 > 0:11:43- What will it look like in the winter?- True.

0:11:43 > 0:11:47These designs couldn't be more different.

0:11:47 > 0:11:51But they have to pick one, so which is it going to be?

0:11:51 > 0:11:53- Choices, Lewis.- Yeah.

0:11:53 > 0:11:55It's hard to pick between the two.

0:11:55 > 0:11:57It's so hard. I like them both.

0:11:57 > 0:12:00Got to pick.

0:12:00 > 0:12:02Will they plump for the Rich brother's design

0:12:02 > 0:12:04with the secluded seating area,

0:12:04 > 0:12:08or will they choose Charlie's arcs and geometric layout,

0:12:08 > 0:12:11plus the opportunity to pick their own garden features?

0:12:11 > 0:12:13It's decision time.

0:12:15 > 0:12:19It's taken us ages to decide. I'm sorry to keep you waiting.

0:12:19 > 0:12:22We've picked one in the end.

0:12:22 > 0:12:24We've decided to go for...

0:12:27 > 0:12:28Oh!

0:12:28 > 0:12:30Cool. I'm pleased about that.

0:12:30 > 0:12:33- Well done.- I'm really pleased.

0:12:33 > 0:12:38- Good.- I think it will make this a nice little oasis of greenery.

0:12:38 > 0:12:41- I agree.- We can't really go wrong, guys, can we?

0:12:41 > 0:12:44The boys' faces say it all.

0:12:44 > 0:12:47They clearly fancied getting their hands on that four grand,

0:12:47 > 0:12:51and what's more, they now have to take orders from Charlie.

0:12:51 > 0:12:55But she's going to need them to help realise her very modern design.

0:13:03 > 0:13:05The time for talking is over.

0:13:05 > 0:13:08Now the hard work really begins.

0:13:08 > 0:13:11The new garden will feature a lot of hard landscaping,

0:13:11 > 0:13:14so while she's off organising the plants,

0:13:14 > 0:13:17Charlie has sent the contractors in to get started.

0:13:17 > 0:13:22And it's project manager Paul's job to try and make sense of her radical

0:13:22 > 0:13:23- design.- What we've got is,

0:13:23 > 0:13:26we've got this paving coming out from the house.

0:13:26 > 0:13:28We've got a bit of planting either side of it.

0:13:28 > 0:13:32- Right.- And a nice big lawn is going to sweep in there.

0:13:32 > 0:13:34Are these all wood stands to retain the planted area?

0:13:34 > 0:13:38Yes. We're going to get some nice wooden edging in there and then the main bit, for us...

0:13:38 > 0:13:40- Is this deck.- ..is this deck.

0:13:40 > 0:13:44The design features three contrasting areas of landscaping

0:13:44 > 0:13:48that interlock like giant pieces of a jigsaw puzzle.

0:13:48 > 0:13:52And for the garden to work, they need to fit together seamlessly.

0:13:52 > 0:13:55Obviously, because this deck is following a similar line to the paving

0:13:55 > 0:13:58where it fans out, so it's not a straightforward

0:13:58 > 0:14:02- rectangle...- Nothing ever is with Charlie's designs, let's face it.

0:14:02 > 0:14:04No!

0:14:06 > 0:14:08Whilst Andy starts on the patio,

0:14:08 > 0:14:12Lee's tackling the biggest landscaping feature - the deck.

0:14:13 > 0:14:17Before the cedar boards Charlie has ordered can be laid,

0:14:17 > 0:14:20a solid and level subframe has to be put down.

0:14:23 > 0:14:26And once the frame is complete, the boards can go on.

0:14:26 > 0:14:30We're going to lay them at an angle, as Charlie's design suggests we do,

0:14:30 > 0:14:33and it's a bit of an optical illusion.

0:14:33 > 0:14:35It makes this area probably look a lot bigger

0:14:35 > 0:14:37than it actually is in reality.

0:14:39 > 0:14:41Once all the deck boards are laid out,

0:14:41 > 0:14:45they have to be accurately spaced so that there's the same sized gap

0:14:45 > 0:14:49between each board for a really smart finish.

0:14:49 > 0:14:52They'll all be spaced at five mil intervals,

0:14:52 > 0:14:54so I'll start spacing at that end there.

0:14:54 > 0:14:57I'll just put a screw in each of them and we'll just continue the

0:14:57 > 0:15:02spacing down and screw on every joist that's already down there.

0:15:02 > 0:15:06With four grand to spend, Charlie has gone for high-end decking.

0:15:06 > 0:15:11Cedarwood rejects moisture, so it's less prone to splitting and twisting.

0:15:11 > 0:15:14If well looked after, it can last 20 years.

0:15:18 > 0:15:22Paul and the landscapers have made good progress with Charlie's design.

0:15:22 > 0:15:27But now she and the Rich brothers have arrived to work their magic in the garden.

0:15:27 > 0:15:31But before they get stuck in, the boss gives the boys a pep talk.

0:15:31 > 0:15:36Now, this garden is all about laying out right in the first place because

0:15:36 > 0:15:40it's all about getting those lines exactly right. Otherwise,

0:15:40 > 0:15:42it's going to look a little...

0:15:42 > 0:15:46- pants.- You've got that circular paving, haven't you?

0:15:46 > 0:15:49- Everything runs off that, does it? - The access is from that centre.

0:15:49 > 0:15:51It's all about the lines in this garden, isn't it?

0:15:51 > 0:15:53- It is indeed.- There's lots of them.

0:15:53 > 0:15:56- Lots of lines. - THEY LAUGH

0:15:56 > 0:15:59And you've got your focal features as well, which you left up to Rhys and Lewis,

0:15:59 > 0:16:02so I think it's going to be quite interesting to see what they've

0:16:02 > 0:16:06chosen and how it fits in with the character of your garden.

0:16:06 > 0:16:10That's a worry. It's a big worry, I have to say.

0:16:10 > 0:16:12Let's go and wrangle with angles.

0:16:12 > 0:16:14THEY LAUGH

0:16:14 > 0:16:19Charlie's design is all about creating a chic, stylish space,

0:16:19 > 0:16:20but in order to achieve that,

0:16:20 > 0:16:24she has to take care of some practicalities first.

0:16:24 > 0:16:26Right, now we need to move this.

0:16:26 > 0:16:28Put one in each corner.

0:16:28 > 0:16:30Rhys and Lewis' plot has a slight dogleg,

0:16:30 > 0:16:34which is the perfect place to hide the shed.

0:16:34 > 0:16:37So it and Milo the bunny need to be moved.

0:16:37 > 0:16:39Onto the deck.

0:16:39 > 0:16:41Oh, hello, there we are.

0:16:41 > 0:16:45Oh, I'm crushed. Hang about, hang about!

0:16:45 > 0:16:47Guys, let's swing it round.

0:16:47 > 0:16:49I'm moving the shed,

0:16:49 > 0:16:52one - to gain some more space, because at the moment,

0:16:52 > 0:16:54it was sort of halfway out in the garden.

0:16:54 > 0:16:57You can see all the space that was lost.

0:16:57 > 0:17:01I'm also going to twist it round so the doors actually open that way out,

0:17:01 > 0:17:04which means we can get it right up against the wall.

0:17:04 > 0:17:06You can't see the shed from there, can you?

0:17:06 > 0:17:07Ideal. That's the exact thing.

0:17:07 > 0:17:09They'll be sat there having their breakfast.

0:17:09 > 0:17:11Can't see the shed.

0:17:12 > 0:17:16So it will give us more space and it won't be such an eyesore

0:17:16 > 0:17:20and we can also tuck the dustbins there as well.

0:17:20 > 0:17:22But the shed will need a new base,

0:17:22 > 0:17:24so Charlie sets Harry and David to work.

0:17:24 > 0:17:28- It's nice having this little bit here, isn't it?- Yes, you can't see it from the house either.

0:17:28 > 0:17:32- Which is quite nice.- We were going to do the same, weren't we? - Oh, we were.- Out of sight.

0:17:32 > 0:17:36We would have done it that much better, though, wouldn't we?

0:17:36 > 0:17:40And at last, David has found some life in the garden.

0:17:40 > 0:17:41It's a toad!

0:17:41 > 0:17:43Look at this little guy.

0:17:43 > 0:17:46- Cool.- Where do we put him?

0:17:46 > 0:17:48Oh, he's athletic.

0:17:48 > 0:17:49Watch out.

0:17:49 > 0:17:52With the toad safely re-homed in a neighbour's garden,

0:17:52 > 0:17:56the chaps can get on with laying a base of reused slabs and gravel.

0:17:56 > 0:17:59Ready for the shed to be put in its new position.

0:18:01 > 0:18:02Now for the wheelie bins.

0:18:04 > 0:18:07We're trying to work out where the trellis is going to go while

0:18:07 > 0:18:08you can still get to the bins.

0:18:11 > 0:18:13Like that, just like that.

0:18:13 > 0:18:15SHE LAUGHS

0:18:15 > 0:18:17If I was approaching with a big bag of stuff,

0:18:17 > 0:18:19I would want the lid right there.

0:18:19 > 0:18:21Lid and then this one...

0:18:21 > 0:18:23Hang on. I just...

0:18:24 > 0:18:25I'm an artist at work, all right?

0:18:25 > 0:18:27This is a gardening programme.

0:18:27 > 0:18:29Hey, you wouldn't believe it.

0:18:29 > 0:18:31It's bin shuffling.

0:18:32 > 0:18:36The problem is that by giving Lewis and Rhys easy access to their bins,

0:18:36 > 0:18:38it might affect the design.

0:18:40 > 0:18:42I'm going to be a bit controversial now.

0:18:42 > 0:18:45I've asked everybody else in the garden what we should do with the bins,

0:18:45 > 0:18:49but I'm going to actually ask Lewis and Rhys.

0:18:49 > 0:18:52Rhys, Lewis, I have a little question.

0:18:52 > 0:18:54Don't look so concerned.

0:18:54 > 0:18:56On the design,

0:18:56 > 0:19:00I have a piece of trellis here and then a piece of trellis running here to screen the bins.

0:19:00 > 0:19:03It's going to be a bit tight getting them in and out. I wondered whether

0:19:03 > 0:19:08we could move the bins outside and behind the fence and screen them.

0:19:08 > 0:19:10- Sure.- That way - one, we get more garden,

0:19:10 > 0:19:13but then you won't have the smell of bins either

0:19:13 > 0:19:15- when you're sat on the deck.- OK.

0:19:15 > 0:19:18Good idea. Grab a bin, then!

0:19:18 > 0:19:20With the bins on their way out...

0:19:20 > 0:19:22Course I get the heavy one!

0:19:22 > 0:19:23LAUGHTER

0:19:23 > 0:19:25..Charlie gets the build back on track.

0:19:27 > 0:19:30With all the lines for the hard landscaping marked out,

0:19:30 > 0:19:34Andy and Falkland are putting in the circular patio by the back door.

0:19:34 > 0:19:37Go from there to there. To the concrete, yeah.

0:19:37 > 0:19:42To save time and money, Charlie has chosen a circular patio kit.

0:19:42 > 0:19:44Circular kits are a bit more difficult.

0:19:44 > 0:19:46You need to lay them out dry,

0:19:46 > 0:19:49play around with it until you get them absolutely bang on to what you

0:19:49 > 0:19:51want. It'll save you time in the long run.

0:19:52 > 0:19:57The stones are ready cut and come in a variety of finishes and sizes

0:19:57 > 0:19:58from most DIY stores.

0:19:58 > 0:20:02They save having to cut each stone to fit the design.

0:20:02 > 0:20:04That's why you set them out dry.

0:20:04 > 0:20:07If you lay them wet, you get that.

0:20:08 > 0:20:09So we start again.

0:20:11 > 0:20:15The humble patio has served the British garden well for decades.

0:20:17 > 0:20:19But in some modern gardens,

0:20:19 > 0:20:23the traditional, rectangular area of pavers is a thing of the past.

0:20:25 > 0:20:28Using different shapes and contrasting materials can

0:20:28 > 0:20:30turn any area of hard landscaping

0:20:30 > 0:20:33into a feature and focal point.

0:20:34 > 0:20:38Creating circles and semicircles makes a narrow space seem wider.

0:20:40 > 0:20:43While using several materials in one feature

0:20:43 > 0:20:45stops it looking like a giant block.

0:20:47 > 0:20:52And replacing the odd paver with planting, particularly centre plants,

0:20:52 > 0:20:55means your patio can smell nice as well as look nice.

0:20:59 > 0:21:00In Rhys and Lewis' garden,

0:21:00 > 0:21:05the landscaping will seamlessly lead the couple from the back door

0:21:05 > 0:21:06to a decked seating area.

0:21:06 > 0:21:10But the patio kit the boys are using doesn't quite fit properly.

0:21:10 > 0:21:12Because we're butting up to the house,

0:21:12 > 0:21:15we need to just modify a few slabs.

0:21:15 > 0:21:18We're trying to make a template for this section out of cardboard

0:21:18 > 0:21:20because it's a very strange shape.

0:21:20 > 0:21:23So the thing I'm trying to end up with is this shape,

0:21:23 > 0:21:26with a pointing gap of a centimetre all the way around,

0:21:26 > 0:21:27including the wall,

0:21:27 > 0:21:31- so that can be offered up to the stone cut.- And it should fit perfect.

0:21:33 > 0:21:37Making a cardboard template first avoids wasting stones by cutting them to

0:21:37 > 0:21:41- the wrong size.- That's perfect!

0:21:41 > 0:21:44- I'm happy with that.- Do you think we could get away with just laying the

0:21:44 > 0:21:45cardboard instead of a bit of stone?

0:21:45 > 0:21:49- I don't think we'll quite get away with that.- It doesn't rain in Staffordshire, does it?

0:21:49 > 0:21:51THEY LAUGH

0:21:59 > 0:22:01- And a perfect one.- Yeah, smashing.

0:22:02 > 0:22:05Meanwhile, whilst Charlie assembles her plants,

0:22:05 > 0:22:08Rhys and Lewis have asked the boys to meet them out front.

0:22:08 > 0:22:13On Charlie's suggestion, they've been shopping.

0:22:13 > 0:22:16- What have you bought?- We've got these two large pots.

0:22:16 > 0:22:19- Nice.- They're big, aren't they? - Thought the curved effect was quite nice.

0:22:19 > 0:22:22They're modern and tall. We like that sort of thing.

0:22:22 > 0:22:24And you've got something in here as well, have you?

0:22:24 > 0:22:25We've overspent on the budget.

0:22:25 > 0:22:27Don't tell us off. We really, really love it.

0:22:27 > 0:22:30- It's really modern.- The sky.

0:22:30 > 0:22:31It's actually a water feature.

0:22:31 > 0:22:34It's certainly very shiny and contemporary, isn't it?

0:22:34 > 0:22:36I think it's going to look beautiful in the garden.

0:22:36 > 0:22:39We thought it would give us a bit of height in the garden and the

0:22:39 > 0:22:43- water flows down both edges of it, so we can see it if it went in the middle of the deck.- Nice.

0:22:43 > 0:22:45So you said it was slightly over budget.

0:22:45 > 0:22:48- How much did you spend on the water feature?- £300.

0:22:48 > 0:22:51So it was £300 but there is that added cost of an electrician

0:22:51 > 0:22:53- to fit it as well, isn't there?- OK.

0:22:53 > 0:22:56- We really love it. - We both really love it.

0:22:56 > 0:23:00Sometimes it's worth spending a little bit more and let Charlie worry

0:23:00 > 0:23:02- about the rest. - THEY LAUGH

0:23:02 > 0:23:06Harry and David can't wait to give Charlie the good news.

0:23:06 > 0:23:09- Charlie?- Yo!- Look what we've got.

0:23:09 > 0:23:12- What's that?- This is the water feature.

0:23:12 > 0:23:13I don't recall ordering that.

0:23:13 > 0:23:16- No, you didn't. - Whoa, that is quite big, isn't it?

0:23:16 > 0:23:19It's definitely a feature. They've done well, I think.

0:23:19 > 0:23:21They've spent the cash, though.

0:23:21 > 0:23:24- They've spent it all? - Well...- And more.

0:23:24 > 0:23:27- So no going out and getting a few more plants, then?- No.

0:23:27 > 0:23:30With the budget and more now well and truly spent,

0:23:30 > 0:23:34there better not be any more surprise costs for Charlie to deal with or

0:23:34 > 0:23:38she'll be unable to give Lewis and Rhys the garden they were expecting.

0:23:38 > 0:23:41- Do you want me to give it a little wiggle, maybe?- Yeah. Yeah, not that way.

0:23:41 > 0:23:43T'other way. That way.

0:23:43 > 0:23:46She has no choice but to try and accommodate the water feature

0:23:46 > 0:23:47into her design.

0:23:47 > 0:23:50It's important to keep the customer happy.

0:23:50 > 0:23:52- You spray it out first.- Oh, yes!

0:23:52 > 0:23:55- Make some marks and then we'll dig away.- But you've got to keep it level.

0:23:55 > 0:23:57It's a nightmare putting these in.

0:23:57 > 0:23:59People always think it's going to be easy.

0:23:59 > 0:24:03But you have to dig out the hole bigger than you need, put sand down,

0:24:03 > 0:24:07level it and then as you backfill it, make sure you don't put it on the tilt.

0:24:08 > 0:24:11So Charlie sets the boys to work.

0:24:11 > 0:24:14The black tank needs to sit underneath the ground and will be filled with

0:24:14 > 0:24:17water. Once that's done,

0:24:17 > 0:24:20Rhys and Lewis' water feature will be fixed to the top.

0:24:25 > 0:24:28The focal points that Charlie is incorporating

0:24:28 > 0:24:32will draw the eye away from the less attractive parts of the garden

0:24:32 > 0:24:34and focus them on the areas of interest.

0:24:38 > 0:24:42The use of focal points in garden design isn't a modern idea.

0:24:42 > 0:24:46It began in the formal Italian Renaissance gardens of the 15th century and

0:24:46 > 0:24:50some of today's most famous gardens are continuing the tradition.

0:24:52 > 0:24:55Art historian and dedicated gardener Sir Roy Strong

0:24:55 > 0:24:58has filled his own garden, the Laskett Gardens,

0:24:58 > 0:25:00with distinctive points of interest.

0:25:02 > 0:25:04Focal points, I think, are absolutely fundamental.

0:25:04 > 0:25:05They draw the eye.

0:25:05 > 0:25:09They depend on what we know as perspective, which is mathematical.

0:25:09 > 0:25:12The converting lines mean distance.

0:25:12 > 0:25:14You can also achieve it through planting colour,

0:25:14 > 0:25:16getting softer into the distance.

0:25:16 > 0:25:18They hold the whole composition together.

0:25:20 > 0:25:22Roy uses a range of plants,

0:25:22 > 0:25:26statues and pots to give visitors a glimpse of something in the distance

0:25:26 > 0:25:29and tempt them down that path.

0:25:29 > 0:25:31Anything can make a focal point, can't it?

0:25:31 > 0:25:34It can be rather grand, as this garden is,

0:25:34 > 0:25:38sort of classical or mock classical bits of statuary.

0:25:38 > 0:25:41Or you may have some fabulous plant or clipped evergreen.

0:25:41 > 0:25:44A piece of topiary can hold a whole garden together.

0:25:44 > 0:25:48It can be a little fountain, it can be a piece of modern sculpture.

0:25:48 > 0:25:49It can be a massive thing,

0:25:49 > 0:25:52so I think it has to be something that has year-round value.

0:25:52 > 0:25:55It's no use having something that comes out in the spring and

0:25:55 > 0:25:58it's just a heap of dead leaves for the other ten months of the year.

0:26:02 > 0:26:05I think without any focal point, the garden is lost.

0:26:05 > 0:26:08In the case of a small back garden,

0:26:08 > 0:26:14it should either be in the centre or at the furthest end, and then

0:26:14 > 0:26:16everything falls around it.

0:26:16 > 0:26:20Hopefully, Sir Roy would approve of Lewis and Rhys' choices.

0:26:20 > 0:26:23The water feature will glisten all year round and the plants in those

0:26:23 > 0:26:27elegant statement planters can be swapped with the seasons.

0:26:28 > 0:26:31Whilst the electrics for the water feature go in,

0:26:31 > 0:26:35the boys are digging the hole to house the ample reservoir.

0:26:35 > 0:26:39And Charlie is supervising the building of the bespoke pergola.

0:26:39 > 0:26:41Rather than buy one in kit form,

0:26:41 > 0:26:45Lee's constructing the pergola out of cedar that matches the deck.

0:26:45 > 0:26:48The pergola is really just adding a bit of height.

0:26:48 > 0:26:50And also, once the climbers are on,

0:26:50 > 0:26:55it will screen those houses overlooking into this garden.

0:26:55 > 0:26:56What do we think, boys?

0:26:57 > 0:27:00Hate it. No, only joking.

0:27:00 > 0:27:02It looks great. Definitely breaks the light at the back.

0:27:02 > 0:27:05- It brings it down, doesn't it? - It sort of brings it down a bit.

0:27:05 > 0:27:08- They can grow something up there, as well. So it's even more screening. - Yeah.

0:27:08 > 0:27:12But once the final screw is in, it's time to start measuring again.

0:27:14 > 0:27:15In Charlie's design,

0:27:15 > 0:27:19the lawn and the flower beds all work off the arc of landscaping.

0:27:20 > 0:27:25And David has a starring role in making sure they're perfect.

0:27:25 > 0:27:27- I'm pretty pivotal. - HE LAUGHS

0:27:27 > 0:27:30We've basically got the hard landscaping in now

0:27:30 > 0:27:32and it's just to get the borders in.

0:27:32 > 0:27:35We've got the decking down, the paving done,

0:27:35 > 0:27:39the path's almost edged up, so it's now marking out.

0:27:39 > 0:27:43Because the water feature has rather taken over the planting area,

0:27:43 > 0:27:46because I wasn't quite expecting it to be quite such a focal point,

0:27:46 > 0:27:50I'm making this area here into flower beds.

0:27:50 > 0:27:53- Am I doing the line? - You're spraying, mate.

0:27:55 > 0:27:56By using a line,

0:27:56 > 0:28:01Charlie can create a perfectly straight edge, which Harry then marks out

0:28:01 > 0:28:03with line marking paint.

0:28:05 > 0:28:09The boys are used to building gardens with perfect lines and angles.

0:28:09 > 0:28:11Yeah, that's about perfect.

0:28:11 > 0:28:13But Charlie's finding it all a bit fiddly.

0:28:13 > 0:28:16When I was drawing this up,

0:28:16 > 0:28:19I thought this was a really simple, straightforward design.

0:28:19 > 0:28:23It was easier to draw than it is to make.

0:28:23 > 0:28:26It's always quite tricky with designs like this when they have

0:28:26 > 0:28:28a pivotal point where everything works off.

0:28:28 > 0:28:31If something changes due to, I guess, the site,

0:28:31 > 0:28:35the characteristic of the site, then everything has to adapt for it.

0:28:35 > 0:28:38Even two mil can make a dramatic difference with the whole garden.

0:28:38 > 0:28:41- Exactly.- Charlie's design was to the mil.

0:28:41 > 0:28:43- Yeah.- I imagine.- Yeah, right!

0:28:45 > 0:28:49Charlie's much more at home amongst her plants,

0:28:49 > 0:28:51and she's ordered some beauties.

0:28:51 > 0:28:55So the great thing about Lewis and Rhys' garden is the budget is

0:28:55 > 0:28:59actually quite big, so it means I've been able to go a bit mad on the

0:28:59 > 0:29:05plants. This is £800 worth of plants, so it's a lot of plants.

0:29:05 > 0:29:08When it comes to planting a garden from scratch

0:29:08 > 0:29:09and there's nothing in it,

0:29:09 > 0:29:13I would suggest the best thing to do is have something for structure that

0:29:13 > 0:29:16is going to be there year in, year out. Something like evergreens.

0:29:16 > 0:29:18We've got fatsias and yuccas.

0:29:18 > 0:29:21And some pittosporum. Something for height.

0:29:21 > 0:29:25So we've got some small trees and climbers that will give you height, and then

0:29:25 > 0:29:27the third thing is colour,

0:29:27 > 0:29:31so we've got some wallflowers and some lavenders

0:29:31 > 0:29:33and some heucheras to give,

0:29:33 > 0:29:37you know, a bit of pizzazz and seasonal interest.

0:29:39 > 0:29:44Another design trick Charlie is using to give the garden a professional finish

0:29:44 > 0:29:46is to edge the borders.

0:29:48 > 0:29:52So all I'm doing now is putting in some wooden edging, and we don't want it

0:29:52 > 0:29:56to be showing too much, so I'm just digging a trench ready to peg it in.

0:29:56 > 0:30:01That will really accentuate the lines from this paving area down the garden.

0:30:03 > 0:30:05But there's a lot of edging to peg in.

0:30:07 > 0:30:10Just using four-by-one tanalised timber.

0:30:10 > 0:30:11Guaranteed for 20 years.

0:30:11 > 0:30:14It's great for edging. It's not going to rot away and crumble

0:30:14 > 0:30:17into the beds. It's going to hold its structure.

0:30:18 > 0:30:21Whilst the boys have the hard job of building the borders,

0:30:21 > 0:30:24the boss has the fun job of filling them.

0:30:27 > 0:30:32I just want to get a few key shrubs in first, then the water feature, so

0:30:32 > 0:30:34I can work out what plants go where.

0:30:34 > 0:30:37So this is Exochorda The Bride.

0:30:37 > 0:30:40Got these simple white flowers in the spring.

0:30:40 > 0:30:43They've trained it as a wall shrub.

0:30:43 > 0:30:46It's actually normally a shrub that sort of cascades,

0:30:46 > 0:30:48so hence the bridal wreath.

0:30:49 > 0:30:52Since this garden is all about focal points,

0:30:52 > 0:30:56Charlie has gone to town and chosen some really special plants.

0:30:58 > 0:31:02- The tree peony is another favourite. - It's also got these really

0:31:02 > 0:31:05architectural leaves that are a bluey-green colour.

0:31:05 > 0:31:08And look, they look fantastic against the cedar deck.

0:31:08 > 0:31:10Just beautiful. Look down there.

0:31:14 > 0:31:18And Charlie has also kept in mind the style of plants Lewis and Rhys love.

0:31:19 > 0:31:22Lewis and Rhys really want to evoke fond memories of their holidays in

0:31:22 > 0:31:25the Mediterranean, and Charlie has given them that through the planting.

0:31:25 > 0:31:29It's not typical Mediterranean planting but it really gives the feeling of it.

0:31:29 > 0:31:31This really lovely bold structure with the fatsia.

0:31:31 > 0:31:33We've got the yucca over there

0:31:33 > 0:31:36and then the agapanthus is going to look great.

0:31:36 > 0:31:40But some of Charlie's plant choices are not as user-friendly as others.

0:31:41 > 0:31:44So, how to deal with spiky plants. Because when it comes to planting

0:31:44 > 0:31:47them, these are very, very sharp.

0:31:47 > 0:31:50I'm not worried about putting them in the garden because Rhys and Lewis

0:31:50 > 0:31:53are grown-up adults, so they know they're spiky.

0:31:53 > 0:31:59But the best thing to do is wrap the sandwich film round and it gently

0:31:59 > 0:32:01holds them in place.

0:32:01 > 0:32:05You can plant them. And then at the very, very end, a pair of scissors,

0:32:05 > 0:32:07zoop, boing!

0:32:07 > 0:32:08Job done.

0:32:10 > 0:32:12With some of the statement plants in place,

0:32:12 > 0:32:16it's time to bring in the budget-busting water feature the boys selected.

0:32:19 > 0:32:21Now the reservoir is level,

0:32:21 > 0:32:24the boys have filled it with water and submerged a pump.

0:32:26 > 0:32:29They've connected a hose to it that will circulate the water over the

0:32:29 > 0:32:31feature when the pump is turned on.

0:32:33 > 0:32:35Shall we take all the fittings out?

0:32:35 > 0:32:37- Right.- Take them out, put them to one side.

0:32:37 > 0:32:40Put the lid on.

0:32:40 > 0:32:43Water features don't just have to be focal points.

0:32:43 > 0:32:46There are many other benefits to adding one to your plot.

0:32:48 > 0:32:52Water in a garden is fantastic for wildlife and particularly for birds,

0:32:52 > 0:32:56as it can provide an opportunity for a drink or a bath.

0:32:58 > 0:33:01The gentle trickle or gurgle of water is also fantastic

0:33:01 > 0:33:04for drowning out background road noise.

0:33:07 > 0:33:11Whatever your garden, there's a water feature to suit it.

0:33:11 > 0:33:14Whether it's sculptural, geometric or a period design...

0:33:15 > 0:33:19..or made of glass, stone or contemporary stainless steel.

0:33:25 > 0:33:28Rhys and Lewis's water feature with its super shiny finish

0:33:28 > 0:33:31should add a luminance to the garden even on the dullest of days.

0:33:37 > 0:33:41The other focal points they've chosen are a couple of tall metal planters.

0:33:43 > 0:33:47Because this pot here has a really deep bass,

0:33:47 > 0:33:51I'm going to fill this with gravel and then put the pot in,

0:33:51 > 0:33:53drill some holes where the base is

0:33:53 > 0:33:56and then that's going to act as a water reservoir for the plants.

0:33:56 > 0:33:59The water levels are just going to hit the soil so it can draw it up,

0:33:59 > 0:34:01but not too much that it gets swamped.

0:34:04 > 0:34:08And Charlie is finishing it off with a pop of colour

0:34:08 > 0:34:10to brighten up the corner.

0:34:10 > 0:34:11Don't they look nice?

0:34:11 > 0:34:16And the great thing about these is these Senetti aren't 100% hardy,

0:34:16 > 0:34:21so it does mean that Lewis or Rhys can lift them out and pop them in the shed

0:34:21 > 0:34:23if they think it's going to be a cold night.

0:34:25 > 0:34:28Charlie's solved the problem of focal points.

0:34:28 > 0:34:31Her next job is to put some more height into the garden.

0:34:32 > 0:34:34In its former life,

0:34:34 > 0:34:37Rhys and Lewis' plot may have had a decent fence

0:34:37 > 0:34:40but was overlooked from three sides.

0:34:40 > 0:34:44So she's adding trees and shrubs to make the garden more private.

0:34:44 > 0:34:48This is one of my favourite trees.

0:34:48 > 0:34:51- It's really a large shrub. - That's a lovely shrub, isn't it?

0:34:51 > 0:34:53- It is.- Really, really nice shape.

0:34:53 > 0:34:58It's known as the wedding cake tree because it grows in these layers and

0:34:58 > 0:34:59it's got a variegated leaf,

0:34:59 > 0:35:02so it's got a light green with a white edge

0:35:02 > 0:35:05and it just looks beautiful and architectural.

0:35:07 > 0:35:11Leaves that are variegated have both green and non-green parts.

0:35:12 > 0:35:14- Is it dogwood? - It is a dogwood, yeah.

0:35:14 > 0:35:16Variegated.

0:35:16 > 0:35:20These boys don't like variegation, but I think they'll be convinced with this,

0:35:20 > 0:35:24and it adds some height to the garden and picks up the height of the pergola.

0:35:24 > 0:35:27And you can still grow things underneath.

0:35:27 > 0:35:30That's why it's an ideal small tree for a small garden.

0:35:34 > 0:35:38To offset the areas of landscaping and swathes of planting,

0:35:38 > 0:35:41Charlie has given Harry and David the task of laying

0:35:41 > 0:35:42a new section of lawn.

0:35:45 > 0:35:47So I'm just preparing the soil now,

0:35:47 > 0:35:51having this loose layer on top, which really allows the turf to knit in and root.

0:35:51 > 0:35:54After I've done this, it's really key not to stand back on it,

0:35:54 > 0:35:59so as you can see, Dave's on a board here and it enables you to not mess up what I've already done.

0:35:59 > 0:36:01And you just move the boards up each time and,

0:36:01 > 0:36:05you know, work away from the prepared soil.

0:36:05 > 0:36:09A lawn this size bought as turf costs £136

0:36:09 > 0:36:11but provides an instant lawn.

0:36:11 > 0:36:14If you want to keep costs down,

0:36:14 > 0:36:17you can sew a lawn from seed for a fraction of the price.

0:36:17 > 0:36:20So we've just staggered the joints here and it just

0:36:20 > 0:36:22gives it more of a seamless look.

0:36:22 > 0:36:26Otherwise, you start seeing all these different lines where it's joined. It becomes quite obvious.

0:36:26 > 0:36:28It's key to butt these joints up really well

0:36:28 > 0:36:31and give it a thorough water afterwards. Otherwise, it gets really dry,

0:36:31 > 0:36:34there's a lot of shrinkage and even the ends can curl up a little bit

0:36:34 > 0:36:38and go a bit yellow, so it won't look very nice.

0:36:38 > 0:36:41Rhys and Lewis are going to have to be vigilant about watering this lawn

0:36:41 > 0:36:45every day for the next six weeks until it's firmly rooted.

0:36:50 > 0:36:55This garden has tested Charlie's design skills and patience to the limit.

0:36:55 > 0:36:57With such a big budget to spend,

0:36:57 > 0:37:02the pressure to deliver something truly special has been intense, but as

0:37:02 > 0:37:04the water feature is turned on...

0:37:05 > 0:37:07- Woo!- Look at that.

0:37:07 > 0:37:10It's quite nice because the whole brightness and shininess of it has

0:37:10 > 0:37:14- disappeared now the water is going down, hasn't it?- Yeah. It's quite a nice sound.

0:37:14 > 0:37:16It's not going to make you want to...

0:37:16 > 0:37:18- Run to the loo. - ..go to the bathroom.

0:37:18 > 0:37:21- I don't know.- ..and the very last Mediterranean plants go in...

0:37:23 > 0:37:27..the garden is finally ready for its grand unveiling.

0:37:30 > 0:37:31For two years,

0:37:31 > 0:37:36Rhys and Lewis' sad plot has barely deserved to be called a garden.

0:37:37 > 0:37:41Void of life, it was neglected whilst the couple focused

0:37:41 > 0:37:43on kitting out their dream home.

0:37:46 > 0:37:49Now it's had a £4,000 face-lift.

0:37:51 > 0:37:55Charlie and the team have spent every penny of the budget to give

0:37:55 > 0:37:59the garden a high-end gloss that she knows the couple will be hoping for.

0:38:01 > 0:38:06She focused much of the budget on different areas of high-end landscaping.

0:38:10 > 0:38:16A £900 circular patio is the ideal spot for morning coffee.

0:38:16 > 0:38:18Whilst the cedar deck adds a touch

0:38:18 > 0:38:22of luxury and is perfect for a glass of wine at the end of the day.

0:38:25 > 0:38:29The bespoke pergola was an indulgence at £350

0:38:29 > 0:38:33but adds height to the previously flat and boring plot...

0:38:35 > 0:38:38..and will look amazing when it's covered with flowers.

0:38:43 > 0:38:47Charlie chose to allocate more than £1,000 to plants,

0:38:47 > 0:38:49but the impact is immense.

0:38:50 > 0:38:54They add privacy and intimacy to the garden and have that Mediterranean

0:38:54 > 0:38:56feel that the boys asked for.

0:38:59 > 0:39:03And Lewis and Rhys have stamped their personality on the garden too,

0:39:03 > 0:39:06with focal points in the form of this stunning water feature

0:39:06 > 0:39:08and two statement planters.

0:39:08 > 0:39:10Not exactly a steal at £800,

0:39:10 > 0:39:14but they certainly add a wow factor to the space.

0:39:16 > 0:39:18Before they called the Garden Rescue team,

0:39:18 > 0:39:20Lewis and Rhys had no idea

0:39:20 > 0:39:23what to do with the blank space they called their garden.

0:39:25 > 0:39:29And to get the ultimate transformation, they staked £4,000.

0:39:31 > 0:39:32Keep your eyes closed.

0:39:32 > 0:39:36It's time to find out if Charlie and the boys have delivered the garden

0:39:36 > 0:39:39- they dreamed of.- Rhys, this way.

0:39:39 > 0:39:41SHE LAUGHS

0:39:41 > 0:39:42You can open your eyes now.

0:39:44 > 0:39:48- Bloody hell.- Wow! Oh, my word!

0:39:48 > 0:39:50Is that a good "goodness me"?

0:39:50 > 0:39:52- Wow!- That's very good.

0:39:52 > 0:39:57- Yeah?- Oh, wow? - That is really nice.- Oh, thank you.

0:39:57 > 0:39:59- Loving it.- Of course they are.

0:39:59 > 0:40:01Is that Mediterranean enough for you?

0:40:01 > 0:40:04- Yes.- That's the type of view. The yuccas...

0:40:04 > 0:40:06- Oh, wow.- It's amazing.

0:40:06 > 0:40:10It sounds like they absolutely love it, so from that contrast of it being

0:40:10 > 0:40:13- just a blank space, they've now got so much interest, haven't they? - Yeah.

0:40:13 > 0:40:16Look at the trellis and the water feature.

0:40:16 > 0:40:18- Yeah.- Well, you chose the water feature.

0:40:18 > 0:40:19Why are you surprised?

0:40:19 > 0:40:21THEY LAUGH

0:40:21 > 0:40:23My word, what a transformation.

0:40:23 > 0:40:25You don't really notice the shed, do you?

0:40:25 > 0:40:28- No, that is very good.- Unbelievable.

0:40:28 > 0:40:31- Let me get on your shoulders now, mate.- Get on, get on up.

0:40:32 > 0:40:34What's going on?

0:40:35 > 0:40:38I have to say, you did a good job with the water feature.

0:40:38 > 0:40:41- Yes! - THEY LAUGH

0:40:41 > 0:40:44I'll give you that. Even though you blew the budget.

0:40:45 > 0:40:49The great thing is, it's double sided and the sound

0:40:49 > 0:40:52- is not an irritating sound.- Yes.

0:40:52 > 0:40:55- HARRY:- They spent a lot on it, but that for them is the icing on the cake.

0:40:55 > 0:40:57It's really finished that garden.

0:40:57 > 0:41:00- DAVID:- It's a really good choice of a feature there, to be honest.

0:41:00 > 0:41:03Giving them a little budget to go and spend makes it

0:41:03 > 0:41:07- more personal to them, so...- Indeed, it's their little patch, isn't it? - Yeah.

0:41:07 > 0:41:10So, can you see yourself using this space?

0:41:10 > 0:41:13Absolutely. Tonight, yeah.

0:41:13 > 0:41:14Sitting on the deck.

0:41:14 > 0:41:18This will make it your own private little sanctuary in this area.

0:41:18 > 0:41:21Oh, it's fantastic. I love it.

0:41:21 > 0:41:22Thank you so much.

0:41:22 > 0:41:26They love the decked area and I think they're quite looking forward to entertaining on there.

0:41:26 > 0:41:28- Brilliant.- It has brought a real focal area to the garden.

0:41:28 > 0:41:33It's a usable space now, isn't it? Before, they only had this little bit of paving, didn't they?

0:41:33 > 0:41:35At least now they get to walk down the garden.

0:41:35 > 0:41:41- Yeah.- I know you guys are quite high spec, aren't you?

0:41:41 > 0:41:44Has the garden made it to the level of your house?

0:41:44 > 0:41:46Definitely, yeah. Absolutely, yes.

0:41:46 > 0:41:48There's a good theme going on, it's modern.

0:41:48 > 0:41:51There's lots of spaces to use as well, isn't there?

0:41:51 > 0:41:54The decking and the patio, the grass. It's fantastic.

0:41:54 > 0:41:55Really pleased.

0:41:55 > 0:41:58Good. Would you employ us again, then?

0:41:58 > 0:42:00Absolutely.

0:42:00 > 0:42:03Great answer. We might not let you go out shopping again because we

0:42:03 > 0:42:06slightly blew the budget but, hey.

0:42:06 > 0:42:08- What's a budget?- What's a budget?

0:42:11 > 0:42:13This garden has been built from scratch.

0:42:13 > 0:42:18There was absolutely nothing for Charlie and the boys to work with

0:42:18 > 0:42:21and they had to please two clients with very particular taste.

0:42:24 > 0:42:26- Well, the build went well.- It did.

0:42:26 > 0:42:29- The weather was nice. - It looks fabulous.

0:42:29 > 0:42:34It looks amazing. It was literally just a blank canvas, wasn't it?

0:42:34 > 0:42:35Couldn't ask for any more.

0:42:35 > 0:42:38I love the deck. It's really, really good.

0:42:38 > 0:42:41Everything. I can't pick out one thing that stands out.

0:42:41 > 0:42:43Everything is fantastic.

0:42:43 > 0:42:46- Really, really is good.- The way that everything is kind of designed,

0:42:46 > 0:42:48the way it all fans out,

0:42:48 > 0:42:51it's really good because you've got different ways to go down the garden.

0:42:51 > 0:42:53It draws your eye. Definitely like,

0:42:53 > 0:42:56really good design and I'm quite happy that we chose that.

0:42:56 > 0:43:01We're going to come out here for weeks, possibly months and think, "Wow, it's transformed our garden."

0:43:01 > 0:43:03Money well spent, definitely.

0:43:05 > 0:43:09- The water feature does look pretty cool.- Yeah, it is the main feature, isn't it?
