0:00:02 > 0:00:04With her can-do attitude, love of simple gardens,
0:00:04 > 0:00:06and decades of experience...
0:00:06 > 0:00:07Hello!
0:00:07 > 0:00:10..Charlie Dimmock is one of Britain's best-loved gardeners.
0:00:10 > 0:00:12Looking good, boys!
0:00:12 > 0:00:15But the new kids on the gardening block are the Rich Brothers.
0:00:15 > 0:00:16We want to be the brothers
0:00:16 > 0:00:19that change people's perceptions of gardens.
0:00:19 > 0:00:22Winners of multiple medals at the Chelsea Flower Show...
0:00:22 > 0:00:24- Oh, wow.- Pipped in! - That's really amazing, isn't it?
0:00:24 > 0:00:28..the boys have become known for their dramatic outdoor spaces.
0:00:30 > 0:00:34Now, these two different generations of gardening are going head-to-head.
0:00:34 > 0:00:38I know they've got a gold medal but I can come up with a few ideas.
0:00:38 > 0:00:42They're meeting frustrated garden owners across the country...
0:00:42 > 0:00:43The photos made it look tiny.
0:00:45 > 0:00:47- It is, isn't it? - I'm sure you've seen larger.
0:00:47 > 0:00:48I don't know what to do with it.
0:00:48 > 0:00:53..and will each pitch them a design based on their needs and budget.
0:00:53 > 0:00:56- That looks exciting.- It doesn't look like it could be our garden.
0:00:56 > 0:00:58- The winner...- Da-da!
0:00:58 > 0:00:59THEY CHEER
0:01:00 > 0:01:02..brings their design to life.
0:01:02 > 0:01:03Hold on! Hold on!
0:01:03 > 0:01:04Sweet as a nut.
0:01:04 > 0:01:07..and the loser has to help them build it.
0:01:07 > 0:01:10I'm getting irritated now, we're sort of faffing around.
0:01:10 > 0:01:11This is what happens...
0:01:11 > 0:01:13Does he ever get irritating?
0:01:13 > 0:01:14All the time.
0:01:14 > 0:01:16..when different styles collide...
0:01:16 > 0:01:17Who chose these?!
0:01:17 > 0:01:18One, two, three.
0:01:20 > 0:01:22- This looks like your design!- Yeah!
0:01:22 > 0:01:25..to turn garden dreams into reality.
0:01:25 > 0:01:26Wow!
0:01:26 > 0:01:28Open your eyes.
0:01:28 > 0:01:29Whoa!
0:01:29 > 0:01:31It's amazing. It's beautiful.
0:01:38 > 0:01:41So whose garden will Charlie and the Rich Brothers
0:01:41 > 0:01:43be battling over this time?
0:01:44 > 0:01:46Tea.
0:01:46 > 0:01:48Today is the turn of photographer Alasdair
0:01:48 > 0:01:50and marketing manager Philippa,
0:01:50 > 0:01:53who live in York with their cat, Ginny.
0:01:53 > 0:01:55Two years ago, not long after they got married,
0:01:55 > 0:01:58the couple bought this Edwardian terraced house
0:01:58 > 0:02:02and began painstakingly restoring it to its former glory.
0:02:02 > 0:02:04An old lady lived here
0:02:04 > 0:02:07and it hadn't really been touched for about 60, 70 years,
0:02:07 > 0:02:09maybe even a bit more.
0:02:09 > 0:02:12We had to rip everything out and start from scratch,
0:02:12 > 0:02:14which was hard work.
0:02:14 > 0:02:18Yeah. It's just left us with the garden to finish off now.
0:02:18 > 0:02:21Once that's done, we'll be done and dusted.
0:02:21 > 0:02:23They're a young couple that live in York.
0:02:23 > 0:02:26Very sweet, aren't they? Look!
0:02:26 > 0:02:29I bet their mum and dad were happy when they got married.
0:02:29 > 0:02:31- They're lovely!- They're charming looking, aren't they?
0:02:31 > 0:02:32- They are ideal.- Yeah.
0:02:34 > 0:02:38When it came to the house, Alasdair and Philippa spared no expense,
0:02:38 > 0:02:43carefully considering every detail to create their perfect home.
0:02:43 > 0:02:45We like all the original features.
0:02:45 > 0:02:49We really like the fact that you can tell it's an Edwardian house,
0:02:49 > 0:02:55but on top of that, we've got quite modern tastes.
0:02:55 > 0:02:58But while their house may be a stylish mix
0:02:58 > 0:02:59of period and contemporary...
0:03:01 > 0:03:03..the garden is a concrete jungle.
0:03:04 > 0:03:06The garden's been used as a bit of a dump
0:03:06 > 0:03:08for all the excess material, hasn't it?
0:03:08 > 0:03:10Which is a bit of a shame.
0:03:10 > 0:03:11All that crazy paving.
0:03:13 > 0:03:15At the moment we don't use the garden at all,
0:03:15 > 0:03:18because there's nowhere to sit, there's nothing to look at.
0:03:18 > 0:03:20It's just a dumping ground.
0:03:20 > 0:03:23Basically, all the stuff we had left over from doing up the house
0:03:23 > 0:03:26has just gone straight in the garden, so it's all got...
0:03:28 > 0:03:31- It's a mess. - A bit manky, a bit of a mess.
0:03:31 > 0:03:35It is east facing, so I think it's going to be quite shady.
0:03:35 > 0:03:37That's something we'll have to deal with.
0:03:37 > 0:03:40- Not necessarily a bad thing, though. - Not at all! Some luscious plants.
0:03:40 > 0:03:43Being a terrace, it's bound to be overlooked.
0:03:43 > 0:03:45- Yeah.- And probably have one of those...
0:03:45 > 0:03:47Looks like they've got that funny, odd bit
0:03:47 > 0:03:49that nobody quite knows what to do with.
0:03:49 > 0:03:53This plot is just four and a half metres by seven and a half metres
0:03:53 > 0:03:55and void of any plants.
0:03:55 > 0:03:57It's going to take some serious inspiration
0:03:57 > 0:04:00to reveal its hidden beauty.
0:04:00 > 0:04:02Having created such a stunning home,
0:04:02 > 0:04:06Alasdair and Philippa have very high standards.
0:04:06 > 0:04:12We'd like a mix like we have in the house, of quite clean lines
0:04:12 > 0:04:19and almost regimented with also kind of overflowing planting.
0:04:19 > 0:04:21And they're prepared to spend the money
0:04:21 > 0:04:24to make the outside look as good as the inside.
0:04:24 > 0:04:27So we've got five grand to spend with this garden,
0:04:27 > 0:04:30which I'm very pleased about, because it's actually quite small.
0:04:30 > 0:04:32It does seems a bit silly to scrimp on the garden
0:04:32 > 0:04:34when we've spent so much time and effort on the house.
0:04:34 > 0:04:37Hopefully, it means we can get really good quality materials
0:04:37 > 0:04:40that will stand the test of time.
0:04:40 > 0:04:44£5,000 is a serious budget for such a small space,
0:04:44 > 0:04:46but these are serious clients
0:04:46 > 0:04:49who are going to expect something very special.
0:04:49 > 0:04:52Lots of high-end products, which will be nice for once.
0:04:52 > 0:04:54Looks like they're probably about mine and Dave's age,
0:04:54 > 0:04:57so maybe we've got an extra upper hand on this.
0:04:57 > 0:04:59So that gives me no chance, you're saying.
0:04:59 > 0:05:01- Yeah. 100%.- Thanks for that(!)
0:05:01 > 0:05:04You'll be making the tea in a minute!
0:05:08 > 0:05:10With the garden challenge on the table,
0:05:10 > 0:05:13Charlie and the boys will now compete
0:05:13 > 0:05:15to make over the couple's garden.
0:05:17 > 0:05:20So, they're heading to York on a fact-finding mission
0:05:20 > 0:05:23to find out more about the plot and its owners.
0:05:26 > 0:05:30Wow! Yeah, so I think the word is "bijou".
0:05:30 > 0:05:31Inky dinky!
0:05:31 > 0:05:32BROTHERS LAUGH
0:05:32 > 0:05:34I like it. Not too small, really, is it?
0:05:34 > 0:05:37It's got quite a nice, manageable space, really.
0:05:37 > 0:05:39I suppose the budget will go further.
0:05:39 > 0:05:40That is one plus, isn't it?
0:05:40 > 0:05:44They are low boundaries but with careful planting, somehow...
0:05:44 > 0:05:46I think that's fine, isn't it?
0:05:46 > 0:05:49Then I've noticed a nice, green boundary at the back as well.
0:05:49 > 0:05:53Charlie's got her eye on the little side alley by the kitchen.
0:05:53 > 0:05:56That's even "bijou-er". Can you say "bijou-er"?
0:05:56 > 0:05:59- IN FRENCH ACCENT:- "Bijour", I believe. "Bijour".
0:05:59 > 0:06:01It's definitely thin, isn't it?
0:06:01 > 0:06:03Maybe a nice little area to look onto.
0:06:03 > 0:06:04I think that's a good idea.
0:06:04 > 0:06:06Maybe. Maybe not.
0:06:06 > 0:06:07Anyway, enough of the garden,
0:06:07 > 0:06:10let's go see what inspiration we get from the house!
0:06:13 > 0:06:15Inky, dinky, dinky.
0:06:20 > 0:06:23The boys like to design their gardens
0:06:23 > 0:06:25with the clients' lifestyle in mind,
0:06:25 > 0:06:27so they're keen to find out more
0:06:27 > 0:06:29about how the couple have done up their home.
0:06:29 > 0:06:33- Oh, this is dreamy in here. - Really cosy, isn't it?
0:06:33 > 0:06:35- Beautiful little space. - Before you sit down...
0:06:35 > 0:06:38- No!- Too late. Already there.- Cup of tea now.
0:06:38 > 0:06:40This is gorgeous.
0:06:40 > 0:06:41Whilst Harry and David admire
0:06:41 > 0:06:44Alasdair and Philippa's interior design skills,
0:06:44 > 0:06:48Charlie wants to find out more about how they see the garden.
0:06:49 > 0:06:51What do you want to get from it?
0:06:51 > 0:06:54We'd like... Cos it opens out onto the kitchen,
0:06:54 > 0:06:57we'd like to just have an extension of the house,
0:06:57 > 0:07:01somewhere we can sit and have a barbecue, maybe a pizza oven,
0:07:01 > 0:07:02like, somewhere nice to sit.
0:07:02 > 0:07:04Nice to be able to use it in the evenings as well.
0:07:04 > 0:07:08Although it's a small space, there's some good things about it.
0:07:08 > 0:07:10The walls look in good condition.
0:07:10 > 0:07:11Nice backdrop of the hedge,
0:07:11 > 0:07:14lovely view of the church and the house next door.
0:07:14 > 0:07:17- So you're not overlooked from that side.- No.
0:07:17 > 0:07:20I've just seen as well a huge stack of logs.
0:07:20 > 0:07:22- Yeah.- And a fire.- Nice.
0:07:22 > 0:07:25I think one important element could be to put fire outside.
0:07:25 > 0:07:28- Yeah, like a fire bowl or something? - We'll encourage that lifestyle.
0:07:30 > 0:07:32We like a bit of colour,
0:07:32 > 0:07:35but we'd prefer a garden that was nice all year,
0:07:35 > 0:07:38looked green and healthy and vibrant all year.
0:07:38 > 0:07:40So, low-maintenance?
0:07:40 > 0:07:43More low-maintenance than high-maintenance.
0:07:43 > 0:07:45I notice as well they've got the lovely wooden floor,
0:07:45 > 0:07:48and that runs all the way through the ground floor, out the kitchen.
0:07:48 > 0:07:50I think if we were to have that in the garden,
0:07:50 > 0:07:52- it would really extend that living space.- Nice.
0:07:52 > 0:07:55Well, lots to get on with, so I'm going to get a start.
0:07:55 > 0:07:56Right behind you, mate.
0:07:57 > 0:08:00The boys clearly feel they've got this one in the bag,
0:08:00 > 0:08:02but they need to be careful.
0:08:02 > 0:08:07This couple know what they want and won't accept any old design.
0:08:07 > 0:08:10For five grand, they'll want the best.
0:08:13 > 0:08:17So, Charlie and the boys waste no time putting their ideas on paper.
0:08:19 > 0:08:22They each have to come up with a design for a garden
0:08:22 > 0:08:24they hope the couple will love...
0:08:24 > 0:08:26and then present it to Alasdair and Philippa,
0:08:26 > 0:08:29who will choose which one gets built,
0:08:29 > 0:08:32and the loser has to help the winner build their garden.
0:08:35 > 0:08:36It's the day of the pitch.
0:08:38 > 0:08:40Will Alasdair and Philippa go for Charlie,
0:08:40 > 0:08:44with her decades of experience and vast knowledge of plants...
0:08:44 > 0:08:45Wow!
0:08:45 > 0:08:47..or the Rich Brothers,
0:08:47 > 0:08:51known for their contemporary, medal-winning designs?
0:08:51 > 0:08:53- Here we go!- Yeah.- Yeah?
0:08:53 > 0:08:54That looks good.
0:08:54 > 0:08:58You come out your main door there to this open area,
0:08:58 > 0:09:00seating area, mainly.
0:09:00 > 0:09:05This is a low, shallow pool of water for reflection.
0:09:05 > 0:09:07I thought it'd be quite nice for your seating area
0:09:07 > 0:09:12to be somewhere that you get to, so there's stepping stones across
0:09:12 > 0:09:18onto an area of chunky oak timber deck.
0:09:18 > 0:09:22What we wanted to do was create this extension from your house.
0:09:22 > 0:09:25This stylish, outdoor room that complemented the stylish interior
0:09:25 > 0:09:27you guys have done there.
0:09:27 > 0:09:30We've got the front room straight out from the kitchen,
0:09:30 > 0:09:32which is more for the morning and dining.
0:09:32 > 0:09:36The idea was to use a wooden flooring.
0:09:36 > 0:09:40So, I think, we picked up inside the house you used that throughout
0:09:40 > 0:09:43on the bottom floor, as if it is an extension to the house.
0:09:43 > 0:09:47Then, the back area with two sofas and a fire bowl,
0:09:47 > 0:09:49somewhere more intimate, more cosy,
0:09:49 > 0:09:52a place to really relax and enjoy the space.
0:09:54 > 0:09:57The Rich Brothers have done their homework.
0:09:57 > 0:10:00Their design seamlessly links the interior of the house
0:10:00 > 0:10:03to a luxurious, outdoor living space.
0:10:03 > 0:10:06I really like the breakfast area just outside the kitchen.
0:10:06 > 0:10:08- Perfect for breakfast.- Yeah.
0:10:08 > 0:10:09THEY ALL LAUGH
0:10:11 > 0:10:13But Charlie's taken a gamble
0:10:13 > 0:10:16by going for something they didn't ask for,
0:10:16 > 0:10:17a pond by the back door.
0:10:18 > 0:10:21- I love the water feature. - That's nice.- Yeah?
0:10:21 > 0:10:24Be a dream to walk over some stepping stones.
0:10:24 > 0:10:26Now for the planting.
0:10:26 > 0:10:29One of the key features in the garden are these tree ferns.
0:10:29 > 0:10:31They've got so many good qualities.
0:10:31 > 0:10:35One of them is they've got a really luscious, really large canopy,
0:10:35 > 0:10:38but they've got a really thin stem,
0:10:38 > 0:10:39so they don't take up too much room
0:10:39 > 0:10:41and impose on a small space like this.
0:10:41 > 0:10:44Tree ferns make a dramatic statement.
0:10:44 > 0:10:46But will they be too much for Philippa?
0:10:46 > 0:10:49Also, with the lighting in the garden we're going to put in,
0:10:49 > 0:10:52when they're up lit, they're so architectural and so sculptural.
0:10:52 > 0:10:55Charlie's playing it safe with shorter, exotic plants.
0:10:57 > 0:11:00Plant-wise, lots of greens but foliage effects.
0:11:00 > 0:11:04So, things like that Fatsia japonica, Rodgersias, flowers,
0:11:04 > 0:11:07but very simple, fluffy white flowers.
0:11:07 > 0:11:10This is Equisetum, so it's very regimented and upright,
0:11:10 > 0:11:12looks like bamboo.
0:11:13 > 0:11:16But with five grand burning a hole in their pocket,
0:11:16 > 0:11:18the couple have some questions.
0:11:18 > 0:11:20What happens down the side next to kitchen?
0:11:20 > 0:11:23What we want to do is create this really luscious space.
0:11:23 > 0:11:26It's more an area to look upon rather to be in.
0:11:27 > 0:11:30The boys are continuing the fern theme into the side alley,
0:11:30 > 0:11:33but Charlie sees it as a whole new garden.
0:11:33 > 0:11:36This is very Dingley Dell.
0:11:36 > 0:11:39I want this to be a fernery, with really lush plants.
0:11:39 > 0:11:41So lots of hardy ferns,
0:11:41 > 0:11:45some tree ferns for a little bit of height and some hostas.
0:11:45 > 0:11:47All leaves, foliage.
0:11:47 > 0:11:51- Really nice.- I have to say, that's my favourite bit of the design.
0:11:54 > 0:11:55The pitch is over.
0:11:55 > 0:11:58Now it's up to Alasdair and Philippa.
0:11:58 > 0:12:02They're spending £5,000 of their own money on this garden,
0:12:02 > 0:12:04so they need to choose wisely.
0:12:06 > 0:12:09- Pretty difficult.- Yeah. - I don't know what to think.
0:12:09 > 0:12:11I love the way they've got that breakfast area
0:12:11 > 0:12:15and the second fire pit, but Charlie's,
0:12:15 > 0:12:18especially that little bit off the kitchen.
0:12:18 > 0:12:22Yeah, and the stepping stones in the pond, that's a really sweet idea.
0:12:23 > 0:12:27But this is a really nice view from the kitchen, though.
0:12:27 > 0:12:29I really do like this design.
0:12:29 > 0:12:31Yeah. I'm really excited about this one.
0:12:31 > 0:12:35- It's my favourite, definitely. - I think it's pipped it.
0:12:35 > 0:12:37Only one design can win.
0:12:37 > 0:12:39So who's it going to be?
0:12:41 > 0:12:43Will they go for Charlie's Dingley Dell garden
0:12:43 > 0:12:45with its tranquil water feature
0:12:45 > 0:12:47and stepping stones,
0:12:47 > 0:12:49or the boys' chic outdoor lounge
0:12:49 > 0:12:51with its elegant tree ferns?
0:12:53 > 0:12:56- Hi, guys.- It's a really difficult decision to make.
0:12:56 > 0:12:57But...
0:13:00 > 0:13:02..we've come up with...
0:13:02 > 0:13:03Da-da!
0:13:03 > 0:13:05CHARLIE AND THE RICH BROTHERS CHEER
0:13:05 > 0:13:08- Nice! That's awesome. - What made you choose our design?
0:13:08 > 0:13:10Think it was the two areas,
0:13:10 > 0:13:13having breakfast room just outside the kitchen,
0:13:13 > 0:13:16which is ideal, and then a cosier area at the back.
0:13:16 > 0:13:17Really excited about it.
0:13:17 > 0:13:20- Are you starting now? - Yeah, I've got my gloves!
0:13:22 > 0:13:25The Rich Brothers have emerged triumphant.
0:13:25 > 0:13:29If that's not enough, they now get to boss Charlie around,
0:13:29 > 0:13:32when all three of them build the garden.
0:13:38 > 0:13:41It's early morning in York.
0:13:41 > 0:13:44While the Rich Brothers are away working on the final details
0:13:44 > 0:13:48of their design, the old garden needs to be ripped out
0:13:48 > 0:13:50and the site prepped.
0:13:51 > 0:13:53Right, chaps. First things first,
0:13:53 > 0:13:55we've got to try and sort these levels out.
0:13:55 > 0:13:58So, the boys have sent in project manager Paul,
0:13:58 > 0:14:00and landscapers Andy and Lee,
0:14:00 > 0:14:06to remove the old concrete and make the ground perfectly level.
0:14:06 > 0:14:10The key to the boys' design is a seamless link between the kitchen
0:14:10 > 0:14:12and hard landscaping in the garden.
0:14:12 > 0:14:15So it's critical the foundations are spot-on.
0:14:15 > 0:14:18It's this lip here that we're going off,
0:14:18 > 0:14:21so everything is determined from that.
0:14:21 > 0:14:25The first deck is going to go on top,
0:14:25 > 0:14:30so it looks almost like the floor inside is coming straight out.
0:14:31 > 0:14:33Right then, fellas, let's crack on.
0:14:43 > 0:14:45But they've hit a snag.
0:14:45 > 0:14:47They found the base of a sycamore tree
0:14:47 > 0:14:51that must have been felled when the old garden was put in.
0:14:51 > 0:14:54They don't remember the tree roots over there,
0:14:54 > 0:14:58so I think we could have a major problem getting those out.
0:15:03 > 0:15:07This bit here, as you can see, is enormous.
0:15:07 > 0:15:09There's huge, great big boulders in it.
0:15:11 > 0:15:16We've got a load of paving that's going to come right across here
0:15:16 > 0:15:18and go flush to this wall.
0:15:18 > 0:15:22So, it's a tough job, but somebody's got to do it, I'm afraid.
0:15:23 > 0:15:27And with no space for a digger, the only way to get it out
0:15:27 > 0:15:31is with good, old-fashioned muscle.
0:15:33 > 0:15:36Right, that's it - I'm going home now!
0:15:36 > 0:15:37HE PANTS
0:15:39 > 0:15:43The stubborn sycamore is giving the lads another headache -
0:15:43 > 0:15:45its roots are pushing through the wall,
0:15:45 > 0:15:49where the Rich Brothers are planning to create a new patio.
0:15:49 > 0:15:52Knowing how exacting the boys are with their designs,
0:15:52 > 0:15:56Paul needs instructions from Harry and David.
0:15:56 > 0:15:57- ON PHONE:- Hey, Paul.
0:15:57 > 0:16:00Everything's going relatively smoothly,
0:16:00 > 0:16:04and the problem with it is there's...
0:16:04 > 0:16:06Basically, there's some roots that have gone through the wall,
0:16:06 > 0:16:09and they've started busting the bricks out and cracking the bricks.
0:16:09 > 0:16:12We need to do something with it. We can't leave it like that.
0:16:12 > 0:16:16- ON PHONE:- Because there's some nice, existing brick walls
0:16:16 > 0:16:17around the other side, the lower one,
0:16:17 > 0:16:20I think it'd be nice to tie it in with that.
0:16:20 > 0:16:22- Keep with the history of it.- Yes.
0:16:22 > 0:16:24- I think that would be quite nice. - OK.
0:16:24 > 0:16:27I think what we'll do is, we'll point it.
0:16:27 > 0:16:29We'll point it with a very dry mix.
0:16:29 > 0:16:32We'll rake it out a bit and we might even use the good old technique
0:16:32 > 0:16:35of putting a little bit of dirt in it as well,
0:16:35 > 0:16:37just to make it look like the old pointing,
0:16:37 > 0:16:39so it ties in with the rest of the garden.
0:16:39 > 0:16:41Are you happy with that then, chaps?
0:16:41 > 0:16:44- ON PHONE:- Very happy. Thanks for calling, Paul.
0:16:44 > 0:16:46Right. Lovely. All right. See you soon, chaps.
0:16:46 > 0:16:49- See you soon.- See you later. Bye-bye. Bye.
0:16:49 > 0:16:51Laying paving around the bulge in the wall
0:16:51 > 0:16:54would mean redesigning the patio.
0:16:54 > 0:16:55By rebuilding it,
0:16:55 > 0:16:59the garden Alasdair and Philippa signed up for is still on track.
0:16:59 > 0:17:02Just that one there. Good man!
0:17:02 > 0:17:03There she goes!
0:17:05 > 0:17:09Crisis averted, it's time to get those levels spot-on.
0:17:15 > 0:17:17The foundation of the new garden
0:17:17 > 0:17:20will be a combination of patio and decking.
0:17:20 > 0:17:23- Where do you want this one? - Take that back.
0:17:23 > 0:17:25But, before any paving can go in,
0:17:25 > 0:17:29the boys have to lay down a base layer of aggregate,
0:17:29 > 0:17:32and then whack it into submission to make it level.
0:17:38 > 0:17:43Meanwhile, out front, the Rich Brothers and Charlie have arrived,
0:17:43 > 0:17:45and are preparing themselves for the huge task
0:17:45 > 0:17:48of bringing the boys' winning design to life.
0:17:48 > 0:17:50Right, guys, we've go our work cut out for us with this garden.
0:17:50 > 0:17:53There's going to be a few challenges, isn't there?
0:17:53 > 0:17:56- It's small, but doesn't come without it's trouble, does it?- Mm.
0:17:56 > 0:17:59Everyone thinks a small garden is going to be really easy and quick.
0:17:59 > 0:18:01- I bet it won't be.- No.- No.
0:18:01 > 0:18:05This is going to be one, nice floor that runs on to the back boundary,
0:18:05 > 0:18:09so I think setting out getting that level sorted at the beginning
0:18:09 > 0:18:12- is going to be the key to this, really.- OK. All right.
0:18:12 > 0:18:16Then, this guy here, as well, it's a quite focal point, isn't it?
0:18:16 > 0:18:19It's a small, crammed little space. It's going to be quite tricky.
0:18:19 > 0:18:21A high display, though, because they look out on this.
0:18:21 > 0:18:24It's going to look amazing. That's the whole of the kitchen there,
0:18:24 > 0:18:27and that's the lounge that way as well.
0:18:27 > 0:18:32Basically, it's one level from the kitchen floor straight out.
0:18:32 > 0:18:34- No steps.- Like extended rooms.
0:18:34 > 0:18:37They can open the partition doors and walk straight out.
0:18:37 > 0:18:42- Blimey!- With that added pressure now then, Barry, you're on slabs.
0:18:42 > 0:18:43You'll be doing a bit of that.
0:18:43 > 0:18:47Charlie, I'm going to hide you away in this little Dingley Dell here.
0:18:47 > 0:18:49OK. Doing what?
0:18:49 > 0:18:52- Just relaxing, drinking tea. - Yeah! Sitting down...
0:18:52 > 0:18:55Catching some sun. And then I'm going to set myself on the decking.
0:18:55 > 0:18:57- It's not that sunny. - It isn't at all, is it?
0:18:57 > 0:18:59- Catching the rain. - Optimism, people!
0:18:59 > 0:19:01- Right.- Cool.
0:19:08 > 0:19:10With the boys taking charge in the back...
0:19:12 > 0:19:15..Charlie's been demoted to the side alley.
0:19:15 > 0:19:18And out the front, there's been a delivery.
0:19:18 > 0:19:21- Look at those!- Goodness me!- Wow.
0:19:21 > 0:19:23The six mature tree ferns the boys are hoping
0:19:23 > 0:19:27will bring some real drama to the garden have arrived.
0:19:30 > 0:19:34Tree ferns are an excellent addition to a smaller garden,
0:19:34 > 0:19:36because they have shallow roots.
0:19:36 > 0:19:40But they still provide shade under their wide, feathery fronds.
0:19:43 > 0:19:47Mature samples can cost between £200 and £400,
0:19:47 > 0:19:51so Philippa's keen to see what she's getting for her money.
0:19:51 > 0:19:55- It's going to be like Jurassic Park, I think.- Quite prehistoric!
0:20:05 > 0:20:08One of the biggest challenges with designing a small garden
0:20:08 > 0:20:12is that even the tiniest imperfections are on show.
0:20:12 > 0:20:15Knowing that Alisdair and Philippa have an eye for detail,
0:20:15 > 0:20:20the boys have ordered high-quality materials, for a flawless finish -
0:20:20 > 0:20:22starting with these giant paving slabs.
0:20:22 > 0:20:25We decided to go for a 900 by 600 slab.
0:20:25 > 0:20:28This is probably one of the largest slabs you can get.
0:20:28 > 0:20:31It's kind of key when you have a small garden
0:20:31 > 0:20:34to use elements that are slightly oversized.
0:20:34 > 0:20:38Using big slabs tricks the eyes into thinking the space is larger,
0:20:38 > 0:20:42and laying them across the garden gives the impression of width.
0:20:42 > 0:20:46We also decided to push the slabs up together,
0:20:46 > 0:20:49so there's no pointed line in between.
0:20:49 > 0:20:52This really gives this nice, contemporary feel
0:20:52 > 0:20:54which links in with the house nicely.
0:20:57 > 0:21:00This garden is all about using the small space efficiently,
0:21:00 > 0:21:03without comprising the contemporary look,
0:21:03 > 0:21:05and the boys have even come up with somewhere
0:21:05 > 0:21:08for the couple to store their garden tools.
0:21:08 > 0:21:11And because Alisdair has done up some of the house himself,
0:21:11 > 0:21:14he's keen to have a go at building it.
0:21:14 > 0:21:17I'm measuring up for the shed that I'm going to build at the moment.
0:21:17 > 0:21:20It's going to block off this area here,
0:21:20 > 0:21:22just to keep bins in and things like that.
0:21:22 > 0:21:24I'm just working out how high it's going to go.
0:21:24 > 0:21:27So it's got to be custom-made.
0:21:27 > 0:21:30You can't get an off-the-shelf one, unfortunately.
0:21:30 > 0:21:34The entrance to the side alley is going to be a walk-through shed.
0:21:34 > 0:21:38So the roof will go up, and it'll incorporate the light,
0:21:38 > 0:21:40so when that's on, it'll be in the shed,
0:21:40 > 0:21:43giving us a bit of extra light.
0:21:43 > 0:21:45The roof will go up, above that,
0:21:45 > 0:21:47and then it will drop back down the other side.
0:21:48 > 0:21:52Hopefully, if I've measured right, this will be going straight in.
0:21:54 > 0:21:56Like a glove! Look at that.
0:21:57 > 0:21:58Perfect.
0:22:00 > 0:22:03Meanwhile, whilst the boys can contemplate their next move
0:22:03 > 0:22:05in the big garden...
0:22:05 > 0:22:08Charlie remains confined to the little one.
0:22:09 > 0:22:13I should get my bit finished, done and dusted easily!
0:22:14 > 0:22:16Bring me tea!
0:22:17 > 0:22:21The courtyard has been designed as an area for the couple to sit back
0:22:21 > 0:22:23and admire from their kitchen.
0:22:23 > 0:22:25Having only a few pavers,
0:22:25 > 0:22:28it will be filled to the brim with luscious plants.
0:22:30 > 0:22:33This area here is absolutely tiny.
0:22:33 > 0:22:35I mean, really tiny.
0:22:35 > 0:22:37But it will look fantastic.
0:22:37 > 0:22:38They overlook it from the kitchen,
0:22:38 > 0:22:42so we're planting it up with really lovely, lush plants.
0:22:42 > 0:22:45You got Baltic parsley, it's very architectural.
0:22:45 > 0:22:49It's like cow parsley but much more architectural and bold.
0:22:49 > 0:22:51This area is already lit,
0:22:51 > 0:22:55so it's going to look spectacular with the plants at night.
0:22:55 > 0:22:59So I'm going to plant this Japanese anemone against the wall.
0:22:59 > 0:23:01It doesn't look much at the moment, but it's a lovely plant,
0:23:01 > 0:23:04gives you lots of flowers later in the season,
0:23:04 > 0:23:07when some garden plants are looking a bit sad.
0:23:07 > 0:23:11Comes up, has low foliage, but comes up with flower spikes
0:23:11 > 0:23:13that have got pink, open flowers,
0:23:13 > 0:23:18which look gorgeous against this brickwork, the texture of it.
0:23:20 > 0:23:24I wish the soil was a little bit easier to dig, but there you go.
0:23:24 > 0:23:27You can't have everything in life, can you?
0:23:30 > 0:23:34The next big challenge in the main garden is to seamlessly connect
0:23:34 > 0:23:38the kitchen with the patio area, using a stylish deck.
0:23:38 > 0:23:41It needs to be perfectly flush with the patio,
0:23:41 > 0:23:43so the subframe needs to be spot on.
0:23:43 > 0:23:46And so we're putting a membrane down to stop any weed growth
0:23:46 > 0:23:48coming up through the decking.
0:23:48 > 0:23:50With the shed nearly done,
0:23:50 > 0:23:53it's time for Alisdair to leave the team to it.
0:23:53 > 0:23:56This is looking good, Alisdair!
0:23:56 > 0:23:59Yeah, taken a bit of work, but finally getting there.
0:23:59 > 0:24:01- So, you just need to finish the felting.- Yep.
0:24:01 > 0:24:05But then I would really like you and Philippa to skedaddle
0:24:05 > 0:24:09and get out of here, because the garden's really coming together now,
0:24:09 > 0:24:12and we want a little bit of mystery for when you come back.
0:24:12 > 0:24:14That's all right, we can disappear and leave you to it.
0:24:16 > 0:24:19With most of a hard landscaping finished,
0:24:19 > 0:24:22it's time for the stars of the garden - the tree ferns -
0:24:22 > 0:24:24to make an appearance.
0:24:24 > 0:24:26He's a big old beast, they're hard to carry around,
0:24:26 > 0:24:28so we're going to get some sticks, put them in place
0:24:28 > 0:24:30and find out their positions.
0:24:30 > 0:24:32Harry, chuck them over.
0:24:32 > 0:24:34- Pass me some of those sticks there, mate.- Some of these?
0:24:34 > 0:24:37Yeah, they're perfect. Five of them, please.
0:24:37 > 0:24:39Perfect. Nice.
0:24:40 > 0:24:43Right, what are we thinking?
0:24:43 > 0:24:45Placing them too close together, too far apart,
0:24:45 > 0:24:48or too equidistant will look unnatural,
0:24:48 > 0:24:51so it's critical to position them perfectly.
0:24:51 > 0:24:53- Like that?- Yeah, lovely.
0:24:53 > 0:24:56- And then we'd probably go for one, maybe there?- Yeah.
0:24:58 > 0:25:00And then...
0:25:03 > 0:25:05What do you think of that?
0:25:05 > 0:25:07I think maybe you can have two over there now.
0:25:07 > 0:25:08Maybe pack the centre a little bit.
0:25:08 > 0:25:11- That looks quite full, especially with their spread.- Yeah.
0:25:11 > 0:25:15- Shall I grab one from there?- Yeah, let's take one out the middle...
0:25:15 > 0:25:17and then maybe adjust their positions a little bit.
0:25:17 > 0:25:19And that one can go here, and that...
0:25:19 > 0:25:22- That will be perfect for privacy, actually.- Yeah.
0:25:25 > 0:25:26Tree ferns have shallow roots,
0:25:26 > 0:25:31so the hole only needs to be 10cm bigger than the trunk's diameter,
0:25:31 > 0:25:34and 20cm deeper than the root ball.
0:25:36 > 0:25:39While the bosses get to play with the big trees,
0:25:39 > 0:25:41Charlie's been given a project
0:25:41 > 0:25:43that's even smaller than the side return.
0:25:43 > 0:25:46We're going to make this into a green roof.
0:25:46 > 0:25:49Now, because Alisdair's made the shed himself,
0:25:49 > 0:25:51it's really strong and reinforced.
0:25:51 > 0:25:54If you are using a prefabricated shed at home,
0:25:54 > 0:25:57you'll want to put some extra structure in,
0:25:57 > 0:26:00because of the weight of the roof.
0:26:00 > 0:26:01The roof has been felted,
0:26:01 > 0:26:04but to make sure it matches the rest of the garden,
0:26:04 > 0:26:08Charlie's adding a lip, using the same decking boards as the floor.
0:26:08 > 0:26:13Now, I want to try and create a tray that's about three inches deep.
0:26:14 > 0:26:17And you can't see, but I can feel it's about...
0:26:17 > 0:26:19(That's probably about two inches deep.)
0:26:19 > 0:26:22That'll be enough for the sedums, yeah?
0:26:29 > 0:26:32That's going to go down like that, then we'll trim that off,
0:26:32 > 0:26:34so you won't see it, see? That'll look nice,
0:26:34 > 0:26:39and then just imagine all this sea of sedums. Very pretty.
0:26:46 > 0:26:50Adding a green roof is a great way to create another planting area
0:26:50 > 0:26:55in a small garden, and can transform an old summerhouse or shed.
0:26:55 > 0:26:57But it needs plenty of watering,
0:26:57 > 0:26:59so it's safer to use drought-tolerant plants,
0:26:59 > 0:27:01like succulents.
0:27:03 > 0:27:07But there's no rest for Charlie. The boys need some manual labour.
0:27:07 > 0:27:09Do you want to go in there already, Charlie?
0:27:09 > 0:27:12OK, so that I fall over flat on my bottom?
0:27:12 > 0:27:15- Hopefully! - CHARLIE LAUGHS
0:27:15 > 0:27:16You cheeky thing!
0:27:16 > 0:27:19- Are we just going to walk it and rest it on the things?- Yeah.
0:27:19 > 0:27:21Just do it a bit at a time.
0:27:21 > 0:27:22Let's not go mad.
0:27:24 > 0:27:26- CHUCKLING:- Where are we going?
0:27:28 > 0:27:31- Which one's this for?- Far left.
0:27:31 > 0:27:33Ready? Three, two, one.
0:27:38 > 0:27:40Who chose these? Why did we want them so big?
0:27:40 > 0:27:42They're pretty heavy, aren't they?
0:27:42 > 0:27:44They are quite chunky!
0:27:46 > 0:27:48Very nice, well done.
0:27:48 > 0:27:51- Right, I think it needs to probably spin that way.- Spin round. Yeah.
0:27:54 > 0:27:56Good work.
0:27:56 > 0:27:59That will probably be near enough for somewhere, wouldn't it?
0:27:59 > 0:28:01- Cool!- OK, number one in.- Wonderful.
0:28:03 > 0:28:04One down, four to go.
0:28:09 > 0:28:10Brilliant.
0:28:10 > 0:28:11Cool.
0:28:11 > 0:28:14These are going to give a lovely, modern touch to the garden.
0:28:14 > 0:28:16And they've got a lovely canopy,
0:28:16 > 0:28:18without losing too much light on this garden,
0:28:18 > 0:28:21and the vertical aspect really lifts your eye
0:28:21 > 0:28:23and lets you still see through the garden.
0:28:24 > 0:28:28The tree fern has small, fibrous roots to get moisture...
0:28:30 > 0:28:32..so they need properly securing.
0:28:35 > 0:28:37One person pegs in and bats around it,
0:28:37 > 0:28:40and just really hold the trunk so it's got this firm structure in.
0:28:40 > 0:28:43- So, you're going to make a collar round it?- Yeah.
0:28:43 > 0:28:44That's a quite clever idea.
0:28:44 > 0:28:47As long as that's nice and sturdy, then we're fine.
0:28:47 > 0:28:50We could always just chop all the fronds off, then it won't blow over.
0:28:50 > 0:28:52- Look at the face on that! - That's a bad idea.
0:28:59 > 0:29:01So what we're doing with this tree fern is,
0:29:01 > 0:29:04because it hasn't got normal roots like a tree,
0:29:04 > 0:29:05is we're banging in these stakes,
0:29:05 > 0:29:08and they're anchor it down and act like roots.
0:29:08 > 0:29:10Then we're going to screw it into the tree fern,
0:29:10 > 0:29:12and that will just hold there, secure.
0:29:26 > 0:29:28It may seem strange,
0:29:28 > 0:29:32putting a plant that originated in Australia in a Yorkshire garden...
0:29:34 > 0:29:37..but there's surprising number of exotic plants
0:29:37 > 0:29:41that, with a little TLC, can live happily in the UK climate.
0:29:43 > 0:29:44Tom Hart Dyke,
0:29:44 > 0:29:48curator of the World Garden at Lullingstone Castle in Kent,
0:29:48 > 0:29:52oversees one of the largest collections of exotics in Britain.
0:29:52 > 0:29:58My draw to exotic plants is this magnetic attraction by the foliage
0:29:58 > 0:30:02and by the flowers you cannot, or very rarely, see in this country.
0:30:02 > 0:30:04There's something about them.
0:30:04 > 0:30:09There are easy steps you can take to grow a wide range of plants
0:30:09 > 0:30:12that you cannot believe you can get away with,
0:30:12 > 0:30:14simply by covering them up
0:30:14 > 0:30:17with dad's old woolly jumpers, scarves,
0:30:17 > 0:30:20and these simple measures to grow a wide range of plants.
0:30:22 > 0:30:27It's the combination of both wet and cold weather in the UK
0:30:27 > 0:30:30that can be harmful to many exotics.
0:30:33 > 0:30:36This is the yucca. It's my most favourite plant,
0:30:36 > 0:30:39and I have to say, look at it, it's stunning.
0:30:39 > 0:30:41Whatever the winter,
0:30:41 > 0:30:45I would only have a pane of glass to cover the whole surface area
0:30:45 > 0:30:48of the plant, in a wooden frame that screwed into four posts
0:30:48 > 0:30:53that are very securely placed into the ground,
0:30:53 > 0:30:56and, if possible, at a slight angle, the window pane,
0:30:56 > 0:30:58to let the water run off.
0:30:58 > 0:31:01If you don't have the time to create a cold frame for your plants,
0:31:01 > 0:31:05some can handle anything our climate throws at them.
0:31:06 > 0:31:09This is Trachycarpus fortunei, the Chusan fan palm.
0:31:09 > 0:31:13It's so exotic to look at but it's really hardy.
0:31:13 > 0:31:17It is the hardiest palm that we can grow in this country.
0:31:17 > 0:31:20It comes from extremely cold areas of Asia,
0:31:20 > 0:31:22hence why we can grow it in this climate.
0:31:22 > 0:31:25Minus 17 we had here five years ago.
0:31:25 > 0:31:28Pfft! It was laughing in the face of minus 17!
0:31:29 > 0:31:31Exotic they may be,
0:31:31 > 0:31:34but by being a little brave and taking the necessary steps,
0:31:34 > 0:31:38you'll be pleasantly surprised at how they thrive in your garden.
0:31:43 > 0:31:49In York, our exotic tree ferns can handle all but the coldest frost.
0:31:49 > 0:31:52Adding a layer of straw to protect the crown,
0:31:52 > 0:31:55and folding the fronds in on themselves in the winter months
0:31:55 > 0:31:56will keep them safe.
0:31:56 > 0:31:59It's always as good idea to get as many people as possible
0:31:59 > 0:32:01in a very small space(!)
0:32:01 > 0:32:02SHE CHUCKLES
0:32:03 > 0:32:07I think the ferns here probably won't really die back.
0:32:07 > 0:32:10- No.- Because they'll be so protected.
0:32:10 > 0:32:13- Looks like we're nearly done. - No more digging then, soldier.
0:32:13 > 0:32:15Righty-ho.
0:32:15 > 0:32:17So it's leaning...that way.
0:32:17 > 0:32:19- Yay!- That's a good fit!
0:32:25 > 0:32:29At last, they're all in, and are ready for the grand unveiling.
0:32:32 > 0:32:34Big moment now, mate. Time to get the fronds out.
0:32:38 > 0:32:39- Ta-da!- Beautiful.
0:32:39 > 0:32:43There we are, look at that. Tease them out a bit.
0:32:43 > 0:32:46That's really nice, isn't it? Look at that!
0:32:46 > 0:32:48MUSIC: Blue Danube Waltz by Johann Strauss
0:32:51 > 0:32:52Ooh, crikey!
0:32:53 > 0:32:56A jungle! Whoo!
0:32:57 > 0:32:58That's gorgeous.
0:32:58 > 0:33:00BLUE DANUBE CONTINUES
0:33:07 > 0:33:13So do I get to unwrap mine in my bit of the garden?
0:33:13 > 0:33:14Definitely.
0:33:14 > 0:33:15THEY LAUGH
0:33:19 > 0:33:20- Lovely.- That's amazing.
0:33:21 > 0:33:23That's better than I expected.
0:33:23 > 0:33:27BLUE DANUBE CONTINUES
0:33:37 > 0:33:39That's it, whoa!
0:33:40 > 0:33:42Look at that!
0:33:42 > 0:33:45- SHE LAUGHS - Look at that! That's almost perfect!
0:33:45 > 0:33:47That literally couldn't have been better, could it?
0:33:47 > 0:33:49Perfecto!
0:33:49 > 0:33:52The best bit of the garden!
0:33:52 > 0:33:54I get to do your tree as well, look at that!
0:33:54 > 0:33:56Let's get as many people into the smallest place.
0:33:56 > 0:33:58Don't tread on the soil!
0:33:58 > 0:34:00- Well, I can't not tread on it, unfortunately.- Look at that.
0:34:00 > 0:34:01Look at that wall.
0:34:14 > 0:34:17With so many striking features in this garden,
0:34:17 > 0:34:21Harry and David have convinced Alisdair and Philippa to hold back
0:34:21 > 0:34:24a few hundred quid so it will look just as good at night.
0:34:25 > 0:34:27Installing a lighting scheme
0:34:27 > 0:34:30brings a whole new dimension to their garden.
0:34:33 > 0:34:36Alisdair and Philippa really wanted an entertainment space
0:34:36 > 0:34:38for the evening. These spotlights
0:34:38 > 0:34:40are really going to transform this garden,
0:34:40 > 0:34:42especially uplighting these tree ferns.
0:34:42 > 0:34:46So this garden's not just for the day, but actually for the evening.
0:34:48 > 0:34:50The build may be progressing,
0:34:50 > 0:34:52but it still looks like a lot of landscaping
0:34:52 > 0:34:55with a few trees stuck in the middle.
0:34:56 > 0:34:59It's high time the rest of the plants made an appearance.
0:34:59 > 0:35:02- What do you want now, then? - Hellebores, please. Red ones.
0:35:02 > 0:35:03- Red ones?- Yeah, reds.
0:35:03 > 0:35:05Aw, perfect.
0:35:05 > 0:35:06These are fab.
0:35:06 > 0:35:09- They're beautiful, aren't they? - Gorgeous.
0:35:09 > 0:35:11- Four at one time! - Four at once.
0:35:11 > 0:35:14- So keep coming with the reds? - Yes, please.
0:35:14 > 0:35:16No geraniums.
0:35:16 > 0:35:17Couple of Thalictrum.
0:35:20 > 0:35:22In the boys' design,
0:35:22 > 0:35:25the planting defines the two different living areas.
0:35:25 > 0:35:27With so much patio and deck,
0:35:27 > 0:35:32they're underplanting the ferns with smaller but equally lush varieties
0:35:32 > 0:35:35that will spill over and soften the hard edges.
0:35:35 > 0:35:37We love these grasses in our planting schemes,
0:35:37 > 0:35:39cos we feel it's kind of like the background noise.
0:35:39 > 0:35:41It's what really holds the planting scheme together,
0:35:41 > 0:35:44and then you can dot in your flowering perennials,
0:35:44 > 0:35:47like the astrantias, the aquilegias or the hellebores.
0:35:48 > 0:35:51Well, I have to say, I just love hellebores.
0:35:51 > 0:35:56They've got these lovely flowers that get full of stamens,
0:35:56 > 0:35:58and then afterwards, they get seed pods,
0:35:58 > 0:36:01which I think look quite cute as well.
0:36:01 > 0:36:05And then the foliage is really pretty come the summertime,
0:36:05 > 0:36:08and it's great for flower arranging.
0:36:10 > 0:36:12It's all coming together,
0:36:12 > 0:36:16and although she's been the undergardener, Charlie is impressed.
0:36:16 > 0:36:20Do you know what, David? This looks like your design!
0:36:20 > 0:36:22- Yeah!- Ha-hey! Whoo-ooh!
0:36:22 > 0:36:24Thank goodness you've said that.
0:36:24 > 0:36:27I'm really, really pleased how it's looking, actually. I love it.
0:36:27 > 0:36:29Worth the money.
0:36:29 > 0:36:30Yes, that is true.
0:36:31 > 0:36:33All that's left is the roof.
0:36:36 > 0:36:39I will get round to doing my roof, honest.
0:36:39 > 0:36:42It's just got to wait for the deck first.
0:36:42 > 0:36:43ELECTRIC DRILL WHIRS
0:36:58 > 0:37:02And, with the deck done, Charlie's run out of excuses.
0:37:02 > 0:37:06We've got planting medium with this stuff, which is called hydroleca.
0:37:06 > 0:37:09It's ever so light and porous,
0:37:09 > 0:37:11and we've mixed that in with the planting medium.
0:37:11 > 0:37:15These are water-holding, clay pebbles, and are lighter than soil,
0:37:15 > 0:37:17so they're ideal for our green roof.
0:37:19 > 0:37:24And we have a thin layer over, and I'll plant through with succulents -
0:37:24 > 0:37:27sedums, sempervivum, that type of thing -
0:37:27 > 0:37:31that puts up with really sort of drought conditions.
0:37:31 > 0:37:35Also windy conditions and full sunshine,
0:37:35 > 0:37:38which you will get on this side, and it will create a mat
0:37:38 > 0:37:41right the way across the roof and look gorgeous.
0:37:43 > 0:37:46I'm going to plant them slightly proud,
0:37:46 > 0:37:52because I'm then going to put a very light gravel all the way round them.
0:37:56 > 0:37:59This garden has been a big challenge...
0:38:01 > 0:38:04..in a very small space.
0:38:06 > 0:38:08- It's really, really heavy.- Watch it.
0:38:14 > 0:38:16So what do you think?
0:38:16 > 0:38:17Yeah, it's going to look nice.
0:38:17 > 0:38:20Interested to see what cushions they've got as well.
0:38:24 > 0:38:28This is a first for me, stacking logs in a garden.
0:38:31 > 0:38:34But, as daylight begins to fade...
0:38:34 > 0:38:36Paul? How do you want to start this fire?
0:38:36 > 0:38:39- I can start doing that. - With a match.
0:38:39 > 0:38:41All right then. With a match.
0:38:41 > 0:38:44..Philippa and Alisdair's garden is finally finished.
0:38:52 > 0:38:53In its former life,
0:38:53 > 0:38:57the couple's garden was a poor relation to their stunning home...
0:38:58 > 0:39:00..with bags of rubble everywhere,
0:39:00 > 0:39:03and old, battered crazy paving throughout.
0:39:05 > 0:39:08Now it's had a £5,000 face-lift.
0:39:11 > 0:39:14The boys have used high-quality materials
0:39:14 > 0:39:16to provide an elegant finish.
0:39:17 > 0:39:20The new decking area is ideal for having breakfast,
0:39:20 > 0:39:23or a bit of evening dining.
0:39:23 > 0:39:27Costing around £1,200, it extends seamlessly from the kitchen,
0:39:27 > 0:39:30linking the outside with the inside.
0:39:32 > 0:39:36Towards the rear of the garden is a superb patio,
0:39:36 > 0:39:39made from large pavers that cost around £600.
0:39:39 > 0:39:43An elegant fire bowl links the space with a couple's indoor fire,
0:39:43 > 0:39:46and is perfect for romantic evenings.
0:39:47 > 0:39:51Before, the garden was flat and featureless.
0:39:52 > 0:39:55Now, statuesque tree ferns bring drama,
0:39:55 > 0:39:58texture and year-round colour to the garden.
0:40:01 > 0:40:06With the rest of the planting, they ate up £2,500 of the bill,
0:40:06 > 0:40:09but the boys are hoping the couple will think it was worth it.
0:40:11 > 0:40:14And, of course, there's the narrow alleyway,
0:40:14 > 0:40:17which Charlie has turned into a lush courtyard.
0:40:21 > 0:40:24Alisdair and Philippa wanted the perfect garden,
0:40:24 > 0:40:27and were prepared to spend five grand to get it.
0:40:27 > 0:40:31(The garden looks beautiful, very "Chelsea".)
0:40:31 > 0:40:35It's time to find out if the boys have delivered.
0:40:35 > 0:40:37You're now crossing the threshold into your new garden.
0:40:37 > 0:40:39Open your eyes.
0:40:39 > 0:40:40Wow!
0:40:40 > 0:40:43- What do you think?- Wow!
0:40:44 > 0:40:47- It's amazing!- Thought it was going to look amazing,
0:40:47 > 0:40:50but, yeah, it looks phenomenal.
0:40:50 > 0:40:53Got the fire bowl going, lit, ready for your evening.
0:40:53 > 0:40:55It looks great!
0:40:55 > 0:40:57Explore your garden, please.
0:40:57 > 0:40:58- Walk on through.- It's fantastic!
0:40:58 > 0:41:01- What do you think of the tunnel? - Yeah, it's a proper tunnel.
0:41:01 > 0:41:03It's like a wee adventure!
0:41:04 > 0:41:06Yeah, that look so cool, doesn't it?
0:41:06 > 0:41:08You just can't imagine what it's going to look like.
0:41:08 > 0:41:11Then you come in here, and it's just like another...
0:41:11 > 0:41:13You're transported, aren't you?
0:41:13 > 0:41:16Yeah. It's been quite a diverse, quite a dramatic change.
0:41:16 > 0:41:19- Yeah.- It's so wide. It seems so wide.
0:41:19 > 0:41:22- Yeah, I know.- Before, it felt like you couldn't really stand
0:41:22 > 0:41:27- next to each other in the garden. - Yeah, this area has gone massive.
0:41:27 > 0:41:29Do you feel like it's an extension to the house now?
0:41:29 > 0:41:32- Definitely, yeah. - I love the thresholds
0:41:32 > 0:41:34that just run straight out.
0:41:34 > 0:41:37It was a small garden before, wasn't it?
0:41:37 > 0:41:39It feels twice the size.
0:41:39 > 0:41:42You can really see all the quality materials, can't you?
0:41:42 > 0:41:45The decking is really nice, this is really nice.
0:41:45 > 0:41:49- Obviously, the tree ferns are fantastic.- Yeah.
0:41:49 > 0:41:50Combined with the design,
0:41:50 > 0:41:52I don't know how it could be any better, to be honest.
0:41:52 > 0:41:54Aw! Very kind.
0:41:54 > 0:41:58- Say nothing more! - We're off now, that's us done.
0:41:58 > 0:42:00It just looks fantastic.
0:42:00 > 0:42:01It looks amazing.
0:42:01 > 0:42:04Looks like a garden out of a book.
0:42:04 > 0:42:07A peacock has its feathers, a lion has its mane,
0:42:07 > 0:42:10that garden has its tree ferns.
0:42:10 > 0:42:12- Who says that?- Me!
0:42:12 > 0:42:13Is he your brother?!
0:42:14 > 0:42:17There's absolutely no way we could have made it look like that,
0:42:17 > 0:42:19it's just fantastic.
0:42:19 > 0:42:22- Just been a bit brave... - The drama of it... Yeah.
0:42:22 > 0:42:24It's actually made the kitchen look more impressive,
0:42:24 > 0:42:28which I think is quite an achievement for a garden.
0:42:29 > 0:42:33£5,000 was a big budget for such a small area.
0:42:33 > 0:42:36Do our couple think it's been money well spent?
0:42:37 > 0:42:41You think that spending five grand, which is what it's turned out to be,
0:42:41 > 0:42:44is a lot of money for such a little garden.
0:42:44 > 0:42:49But I'm glad that we did, because it's worthwhile. Worth every penny.
0:42:50 > 0:42:53It's only going to get better, isn't it? This is day one in the garden,
0:42:53 > 0:42:55and we've got years and years of growth to come.
0:42:55 > 0:42:58- It's just going to look better and better every year.- Yeah.
