0:00:02 > 0:00:04With her can-do attitude, love of simple gardens
0:00:04 > 0:00:06- and decades of experience...- Hello!
0:00:06 > 0:00:09..Charlie Dimmock is one of Britain's best-loved gardeners.
0:00:09 > 0:00:12Looking good, boys!
0:00:12 > 0:00:15But the new kids on the gardening block are the Rich brothers.
0:00:15 > 0:00:17We want to be the brothers
0:00:17 > 0:00:19that change people's perceptions of gardens.
0:00:19 > 0:00:22Winners of multiple medals at the Chelsea Flower Show...
0:00:22 > 0:00:24- Oh, get in. - Wow, amazing, isn't it?
0:00:24 > 0:00:29..the boys have become known for their dramatic outdoor spaces.
0:00:29 > 0:00:34Now, these two different generations of gardening are going head-to-head.
0:00:34 > 0:00:38I know they've got a gold medal but I can come up with a few ideas.
0:00:38 > 0:00:42They're meeting frustrated garden owners across the country...
0:00:42 > 0:00:45The photos made it look tiny. It IS, isn't it?
0:00:45 > 0:00:48- I'm sure you've seen larger. - I don't know what to do with it.
0:00:48 > 0:00:51- ..and will each pitch them a design based on their needs...- Wow!
0:00:51 > 0:00:53..and budget.
0:00:53 > 0:00:56- That looks really exciting.- Doesn't look like it could be our garden.
0:00:56 > 0:00:59- The winner...- Ta-da!- ALL:- Whoo!
0:00:59 > 0:01:03- ..brings their design to life.- Hold on, hold on!
0:01:03 > 0:01:07- Sweet as a nut.- And the loser has to help them build it.
0:01:07 > 0:01:10I'm getting irritated now with faffing around.
0:01:10 > 0:01:13- This is what happens...- Does he ever get irritating?- All the time.
0:01:13 > 0:01:18- ..when different styles collide... - Who chose these?- One, two, three.
0:01:19 > 0:01:22- This looks like your design!- Yeah!
0:01:22 > 0:01:25..to turn garden dreams into reality.
0:01:25 > 0:01:27- Wow!- Open your eyes.
0:01:27 > 0:01:30- Wow!- Whoa!- It's amazing!
0:01:30 > 0:01:32- Oh!- It's beautiful!
0:01:38 > 0:01:41So, whose garden will Charlie and the Rich brothers
0:01:41 > 0:01:43be battling over today?
0:01:43 > 0:01:47We've heard from three generations of women from the West Midlands.
0:01:47 > 0:01:52- We've got gran Lillian, mum Carrie and daughter Morgan.- OK.
0:01:52 > 0:01:54These three ladies all live in the same house,
0:01:54 > 0:01:57which they moved into just six months ago.
0:01:58 > 0:02:00And they couldn't be closer.
0:02:00 > 0:02:04We decided Carrie's partner works away such a lot
0:02:04 > 0:02:08that it was company for all of us to be together.
0:02:08 > 0:02:10I've got independent living within the house, which is ideal,
0:02:10 > 0:02:13because we're not living in each other's pockets.
0:02:13 > 0:02:18- Morgan loves having Nan about, doesn't she?- Yeah. Morgan loves it.
0:02:18 > 0:02:20Whatever Mum doesn't do, Nan does.
0:02:20 > 0:02:24Lillian, Carrie and Morgan all share the main house,
0:02:24 > 0:02:27whilst Lillian has her own living space downstairs.
0:02:29 > 0:02:32And now, all three of them would like a new garden
0:02:32 > 0:02:35because the current one isn't really a garden at all.
0:02:35 > 0:02:39- And it looks a little bit like a car park.- A little bit?! A lot like!
0:02:39 > 0:02:42I can't believe it. There's not even weeds growing there.
0:02:42 > 0:02:45It's devoid of a plant. There's nothing in there.
0:02:45 > 0:02:49- The previous owners used it as a driveway.- It's very bland.
0:02:49 > 0:02:54There's just nothing, it's slabs and gravel. There is nothing else.
0:02:54 > 0:02:58The plot is also completely exposed on one side,
0:02:58 > 0:02:59so the ladies have made privacy
0:02:59 > 0:03:02one of the key requirements in the new garden.
0:03:02 > 0:03:04It's vastly overlooked, isn't it?
0:03:04 > 0:03:06I know. That's one thing. The other side looks fine
0:03:06 > 0:03:10but this side looks like there's a bit of a privacy issue.
0:03:10 > 0:03:12My initial thoughts are it needs a bit of height.
0:03:12 > 0:03:17- It is pretty flat. And maybe green!- Do you think?!
0:03:17 > 0:03:20When she moved in with her daughter,
0:03:20 > 0:03:24Lillian left behind a garden she had worked in for years.
0:03:26 > 0:03:30I had a fish pond, lots of shrubs and bushes and flowers,
0:03:30 > 0:03:34lots of tubs with plants and a lawn.
0:03:41 > 0:03:44But it's not just the three ladies that could do with a new garden.
0:03:44 > 0:03:48Their tortoise, Tilly, would like somewhere green too.
0:03:48 > 0:03:51Hello, Tilly!
0:03:51 > 0:03:55Hello, my darling. Come on. Come on. We have to have a bit of tissue
0:03:55 > 0:04:00when we pick you up cos you can be naughty, can't you, eh?
0:04:00 > 0:04:04This family are fed up with staring at concrete and slate chippings
0:04:04 > 0:04:07and would like somewhere to relax in the summer months.
0:04:07 > 0:04:10We constantly say, "It's a sunny day today
0:04:10 > 0:04:13"and we can't sit outside cos everybody else can see us."
0:04:13 > 0:04:15We don't want a car park, do we?
0:04:15 > 0:04:18No, we want a nice garden that we can sit in
0:04:18 > 0:04:21and be able to sit out at night with a glass of wine.
0:04:21 > 0:04:24You know, just what families do.
0:04:24 > 0:04:27And the ladies are prepared to dig into their savings
0:04:27 > 0:04:29to get the garden they want.
0:04:29 > 0:04:34- What is the budget?- The budget's £2,000, which isn't bad, is it?
0:04:34 > 0:04:37Not too bad because it doesn't look huge, does it?
0:04:37 > 0:04:39But there's quite a lot of existing materials,
0:04:39 > 0:04:41so it is all hard landscaping,
0:04:41 > 0:04:43but they look in pretty decent condition,
0:04:43 > 0:04:45- so we could probably reuse them.- Yeah.
0:04:45 > 0:04:47All in all, it's a blank canvas, which I know you love.
0:04:47 > 0:04:50I hate blank canvases. I never know where to start.
0:04:50 > 0:04:54Well, it's time for our designers to get their thinking caps on,
0:04:54 > 0:04:57as Charlie and the boys will now compete for the chance
0:04:57 > 0:04:59to make over this family garden.
0:05:01 > 0:05:03And with three generations of women to answer to,
0:05:03 > 0:05:06they'll need to come up with something special.
0:05:08 > 0:05:11So, their next stop is the West Midlands.
0:05:11 > 0:05:13They want to see the garden itself
0:05:13 > 0:05:15and find out from Lillian and Carrie
0:05:15 > 0:05:18how it could make a difference to their lives.
0:05:18 > 0:05:22And it's not long before they realise just how exposed it is.
0:05:22 > 0:05:25- Pretty bare, isn't it?- Bare?! - THEY LAUGH
0:05:25 > 0:05:30- Goodness gracious, is all I can say. - Age before beauty.- Ah, thank you.
0:05:31 > 0:05:37- Wow!- Wow! Where do you start? - Get a bit of green in here.
0:05:37 > 0:05:39It's not going to be hard to change it up, is it?
0:05:39 > 0:05:41No, I don't think I've ever seen a garden
0:05:41 > 0:05:45- with this much hard landscaping. - If you define it as a garden!
0:05:45 > 0:05:48It could be nice cos you could really create a space for them.
0:05:48 > 0:05:51- IN WELSH ACCENTS:- Harry, some daffodils!- Oh, beautiful!
0:05:52 > 0:05:55- All we need now is a bumblebee. - THEY LAUGH
0:05:55 > 0:05:58Well, I think I've surveyed the garden enough.
0:05:58 > 0:05:59I'm going to check out inside.
0:05:59 > 0:06:02- You're not putting the kettle on, are you?- No.- No?
0:06:02 > 0:06:04- No.- It's one day's job.
0:06:04 > 0:06:08- Two sugars.- In your dreams! - DAVID LAUGHS
0:06:09 > 0:06:12Traditionally, the boys like to look inside the house
0:06:12 > 0:06:14for clues on their clients' taste.
0:06:15 > 0:06:18But today, they decided to swap with Charlie,
0:06:18 > 0:06:20so she's having a snoop around.
0:06:20 > 0:06:23Strong colours. Lots of flowers.
0:06:23 > 0:06:28Way more than the garden, I have to say. Some real, some not so real.
0:06:28 > 0:06:33And the boys are getting to know Carrie and Lillian a little better.
0:06:33 > 0:06:38- Wow, yes, this is definitely a very interesting garden.- Very minimal.
0:06:38 > 0:06:41I think it's awesome having three generations.
0:06:41 > 0:06:44It's great, us all being together. It's fantastic.
0:06:44 > 0:06:48- We live together, being brothers. - We know all about that.
0:06:48 > 0:06:50Mum's got her own back door, so if she wants to come out on her own
0:06:50 > 0:06:53and chill out with a glass of wine, she can.
0:06:53 > 0:06:55We'll focus on that area then, shall we?
0:06:55 > 0:06:57- Shall we fence it off, in half?- Yes. - THEY LAUGH
0:06:59 > 0:07:01All very matching and sleek.
0:07:03 > 0:07:05More flowers up there.
0:07:05 > 0:07:08- And what about you, Carrie? - I'd like somewhere to sit.- OK.
0:07:08 > 0:07:10To be able to bring my friends round, have a barbecue,
0:07:10 > 0:07:15- invite the family.- Yeah.- And Morgan? - Morgan's list is endless.
0:07:15 > 0:07:17So, just somewhere to sit and socialise
0:07:17 > 0:07:20and it's maybe screened off a bit and a bit more concealed.
0:07:22 > 0:07:25And this must be Lillian's lounge. Very nice.
0:07:25 > 0:07:27Loads of flowers everywhere.
0:07:27 > 0:07:32Inside, Charlie's discovered that with so little life in the garden,
0:07:32 > 0:07:34Lillian's filled her living room with colour.
0:07:34 > 0:07:37So, what will it mean to you to have this space
0:07:37 > 0:07:41- transformed into a beautiful garden? - It'll mean the world!
0:07:41 > 0:07:45- Somewhere to sit.- Yeah, somewhere to sit, without prying eyes.
0:07:45 > 0:07:46Oh, yes, definitely.
0:07:46 > 0:07:48You'd definitely get to know the neighbours
0:07:48 > 0:07:50if you sat in this garden wouldn't you?
0:07:50 > 0:07:52It's nice to be able to sit in your garden
0:07:52 > 0:07:54and not have people glaring at you.
0:07:54 > 0:07:56I'm going to sit here and think about the budget.
0:07:56 > 0:08:01I think I'm going to blow it all on the garden and the plants.
0:08:01 > 0:08:03Blow the fence!
0:08:04 > 0:08:07This is a tricky one for our designers.
0:08:07 > 0:08:10They may have two grand to spend,
0:08:10 > 0:08:14but fixing the privacy issue could potentially swallow up half of that,
0:08:14 > 0:08:16leaving very little for the garden.
0:08:20 > 0:08:22INAUDIBLE
0:08:22 > 0:08:25So, it's time for Charlie and the boys to get to work.
0:08:27 > 0:08:30They each have to come up with a winning design
0:08:30 > 0:08:34that will fulfil all the family's garden needs
0:08:34 > 0:08:37and then present it to Lillian and Carrie,
0:08:37 > 0:08:39who will choose which one gets built.
0:08:39 > 0:08:41But it isn't over for the loser,
0:08:41 > 0:08:45as they have to help the winner build their garden.
0:08:47 > 0:08:49So, who will they plump for?
0:08:49 > 0:08:52The boys' modern designs will appeal to Carrie and Morgan
0:08:52 > 0:08:57but can they win over Lillian, who loves her traditional daffs?
0:08:57 > 0:09:00Charlie may have spotted Lillian's love of flowers
0:09:00 > 0:09:03but has she underestimated the privacy issue?
0:09:03 > 0:09:06It's time for the pitch.
0:09:07 > 0:09:09We wanted to create a kind of haven for you -
0:09:09 > 0:09:12somewhere that feels very private, very green,
0:09:12 > 0:09:14very luscious and very colourful.
0:09:14 > 0:09:16We've done this by splitting the garden
0:09:16 > 0:09:18with these four planting beds.
0:09:18 > 0:09:22That really then isolates this kind of little social area
0:09:22 > 0:09:27in the middle, which means you are literally surrounded with greenery.
0:09:27 > 0:09:29And within these four individual flowerbeds,
0:09:29 > 0:09:31we want to make sure we have a lot of year-round interest.
0:09:31 > 0:09:33I know you like daffodils,
0:09:33 > 0:09:35so there, you could plant your spring bulbs.
0:09:35 > 0:09:36And then, with the trees and shrubs,
0:09:36 > 0:09:39maybe some interest then throughout the winter.
0:09:41 > 0:09:44- Wow!- Why wow?
0:09:45 > 0:09:50- Oh, Morgan's name on it. - Oh, lots of colour!- Lots of colour.
0:09:50 > 0:09:53- I'm glad you said that, Lillian. - Lots of colour.
0:09:53 > 0:09:56Having listened to what you want,
0:09:56 > 0:10:01I have gone very much for a garden garden, to get rid of the car park.
0:10:01 > 0:10:06This area here is raised beds made of timber and in that area,
0:10:06 > 0:10:09there's going to be much more of the pottering plants,
0:10:09 > 0:10:16so cottagey - things like dianthus and Cupid's dart, aquilegias.
0:10:16 > 0:10:23- So, I have spent all of the budget on the garden.- Right.- Not the fence.
0:10:23 > 0:10:28- OK.- Mainly because I think the fence could be easily fixable afterwards.
0:10:28 > 0:10:30- OK.- Get the garden done first.
0:10:31 > 0:10:35Charlie's hoping to win the ladies over with a blaze of colour
0:10:35 > 0:10:38so the boundary doesn't become such an issue.
0:10:38 > 0:10:40But the boys are playing it safe.
0:10:41 > 0:10:45- I know one of the main things with this garden is privacy.- It is.
0:10:45 > 0:10:46That's something we need to address,
0:10:46 > 0:10:49so we've given you brand-new fencing all the way along,
0:10:49 > 0:10:52solid wooden fencing, so people will have to really try
0:10:52 > 0:10:55if they want to look in - which they will want to look in, I'm sure.
0:10:55 > 0:10:57They'll be really interested.
0:10:57 > 0:11:02Not to be outdone, Charlie has an alternative to the fence.
0:11:02 > 0:11:07We've got topiary balls that are going to be descending in height,
0:11:07 > 0:11:10- so it gives a false perspective, make the garden look longer.- Lovely.
0:11:10 > 0:11:13Lillian doesn't look entirely convinced,
0:11:13 > 0:11:16so Charlie has something special, just for her.
0:11:16 > 0:11:20- And this area here is your area, Lillian.- Yes.- Seating area there.
0:11:20 > 0:11:24Now, it's quite a dark area, so to brighten it up,
0:11:24 > 0:11:27- I've put a mirror on the wall here. - Oh, right.
0:11:27 > 0:11:31If you put plants round it, you really don't see that it's a mirror.
0:11:31 > 0:11:32Sounds lovely.
0:11:32 > 0:11:36The pitch is over.
0:11:37 > 0:11:40It's now all down to Lillian and Carrie.
0:11:40 > 0:11:44- Wow, what a decision!- It is. It's a big decision, isn't it?
0:11:44 > 0:11:48They're both lovely designs, they really are.
0:11:48 > 0:11:50- To me, that's more modern.- Yeah.
0:11:50 > 0:11:54We've got this big area here where we can have the barbecue
0:11:54 > 0:11:56- and have people round. - I like the deign.
0:11:56 > 0:11:59I like the way Charlie's used the trees going down.
0:11:59 > 0:12:02- But her flowers are so colourful as well, aren't they?- Yeah.
0:12:02 > 0:12:04And there's such a walkway there with people
0:12:04 > 0:12:06- that you really do need that fence.- Yeah.
0:12:06 > 0:12:10You need a nice, good, high fence for the privacy.
0:12:10 > 0:12:15- I like that idea for me. - So you've got your own space.
0:12:15 > 0:12:17Yeah, so I've got my own space.
0:12:18 > 0:12:23This is not an easy decision. They both want a pretty garden
0:12:23 > 0:12:26but can't ignore the practical problems with the existing one.
0:12:26 > 0:12:29The question is, will the heart rule the head?
0:12:29 > 0:12:34Will they go for Charlie's bounty of colourful plants
0:12:34 > 0:12:36and Lillian's secret garden
0:12:36 > 0:12:38or the boys' large entertaining area,
0:12:38 > 0:12:41raised planters and solid fencing for privacy?
0:12:43 > 0:12:46- Hello.- Hello.- Hello.- Hello.
0:12:49 > 0:12:54- It's been a very hard decision but we have made a decision.- Good.
0:12:57 > 0:13:02- Ah!- Whoo!- Yeah! It's the boundary that finished it!
0:13:02 > 0:13:05Oh, amazing! So, what made you go for our design?
0:13:05 > 0:13:09- The fence.- Ah, there we are. - We were subtle.
0:13:11 > 0:13:15NARRATOR: So, the Rich brothers have won, but Lillian has one condition.
0:13:15 > 0:13:20What I would like to do, if it's all right with Charlie,
0:13:20 > 0:13:23I'd like to pinch some of her design for that corner,
0:13:23 > 0:13:26- if it's all right with you two as well.- Yeah.
0:13:26 > 0:13:30- No.- Of course it's fine.- I'd like the mirror...- Uh-huh.
0:13:30 > 0:13:35..area, with the flowers round it and the little seating area,
0:13:35 > 0:13:39so that I've got it private for my friends when they come round.
0:13:39 > 0:13:43- That's the wine corner. - That's the wine corner.
0:13:45 > 0:13:48NARRATOR: So, the boys may have taken this one,
0:13:48 > 0:13:51but they won't be able to boss Charlie around too much,
0:13:51 > 0:13:53because to give this family what they want,
0:13:53 > 0:13:57both designs have to somehow work together.
0:14:03 > 0:14:05It's an early start in the West Midlands.
0:14:05 > 0:14:08Right, skip man's here. Things are on track.
0:14:10 > 0:14:13The Rich brothers are off site, finishing their planting plans.
0:14:13 > 0:14:15Post in the hole!
0:14:17 > 0:14:20So, they've asked project manager Paul
0:14:20 > 0:14:22and landscapers Andy, Lee and Falkland,
0:14:22 > 0:14:24to start ripping into the concrete wasteland
0:14:24 > 0:14:27that is Lillian and Carrie's garden.
0:14:29 > 0:14:31With hard landscaping to remove,
0:14:31 > 0:14:35the boys have allocated £170 of the budget for hiring a skip
0:14:35 > 0:14:37to get rid of it all.
0:14:37 > 0:14:39That's it. Bash that end off.
0:14:41 > 0:14:42Timber!
0:14:42 > 0:14:44The first challenge is to put in the new fence,
0:14:44 > 0:14:47which the family so badly need.
0:14:47 > 0:14:49There 25 metres of it to go in,
0:14:49 > 0:14:54but first, the old low-lying fence has to come out.
0:14:54 > 0:14:56And then we can remove the post, get rid of it,
0:14:56 > 0:14:58make it neat at the bottom,
0:14:58 > 0:15:00and we're ready to put the new fence line in.
0:15:02 > 0:15:04It's a painful task.
0:15:04 > 0:15:08Every concrete post has steel wires running through it.
0:15:21 > 0:15:25That's the first panel going in now. One of many.
0:15:25 > 0:15:28But there's a problem.
0:15:28 > 0:15:30Lillian and Carrie have asked for a new garden gate
0:15:30 > 0:15:32to be part of the fence.
0:15:32 > 0:15:35- Cos your post's going to go in there, which is the problem.- Yeah.
0:15:35 > 0:15:37So it's going to have to be that side.
0:15:37 > 0:15:40But as long as there's enough room for it to come round here.
0:15:40 > 0:15:43The boys have realised that the new posts
0:15:43 > 0:15:46are going to be sunk in exactly the spot
0:15:46 > 0:15:49where the footings of the old concrete posts are.
0:15:50 > 0:15:53It's almost impossible to get them out,
0:15:53 > 0:15:55so a bit of rethinking is needed.
0:15:56 > 0:16:01Right, the gate, originally, was going to go here,
0:16:01 > 0:16:03and what's happened is...
0:16:03 > 0:16:06What we've realised is if the gate goes there,
0:16:06 > 0:16:10it means that the wooden posts that we're putting in
0:16:10 > 0:16:14go in exactly where the old concrete posts went in,
0:16:14 > 0:16:19so the solution is rejig where the gate's going.
0:16:20 > 0:16:22Problem averted.
0:16:22 > 0:16:26By moving the gate, it shifts the end of each panel along,
0:16:26 > 0:16:30avoiding hitting the old concrete posts with the new wooden ones.
0:16:32 > 0:16:35A bit of quick-drying cement and job done.
0:16:44 > 0:16:47- Speed-fencing.- Is that right?
0:16:54 > 0:16:56The Rich brothers have arrived
0:16:56 > 0:16:59and are pleased with Paul and the boys' efforts.
0:16:59 > 0:17:02Loving the new fence. It's smartened up this space quite a lot.
0:17:02 > 0:17:04Makes a dramatic difference, doesn't it,
0:17:04 > 0:17:06- with the privacy for the garden? - Yeah.
0:17:09 > 0:17:12But this is no time for standing around.
0:17:12 > 0:17:15Transforming this grey space into something living
0:17:15 > 0:17:18is going to need some serious muscle and now Charlie's here,
0:17:18 > 0:17:21they're gearing themselves up for the task ahead.
0:17:21 > 0:17:23It will be interesting how this one plans out.
0:17:23 > 0:17:26Any plant is just going to make a total difference, really.
0:17:26 > 0:17:30Hard landscaping's already here, isn't it? We're reusing the slate.
0:17:30 > 0:17:34- You said it!- So, it's just bringing in plants, isn't it?- Yeah.
0:17:34 > 0:17:38- Yeah.- Easy.- It's going to feel quite kind of cosy, I think.
0:17:38 > 0:17:41- It's going to really change it. - Massively.
0:17:41 > 0:17:42It will seem longer and longer.
0:17:42 > 0:17:46Because you can't really see out, it's going to draw your eye in.
0:17:46 > 0:17:49- To the garage at the end! - Yeah, we'll have to do something.
0:17:49 > 0:17:52We have picked out some interesting stuff.
0:17:52 > 0:17:55We've had a little idea about sectioning off, screening.
0:17:55 > 0:18:00With £1,100 already spent on the fence and the skip,
0:18:00 > 0:18:03the boys are planning some cost-effective features
0:18:03 > 0:18:06to make Lillian and Carrie's budget go further.
0:18:06 > 0:18:09So, have you got something up your sleeve, have you?
0:18:09 > 0:18:12- We don't know where it's going yet. - Within the budget?
0:18:12 > 0:18:15- Everything's in budget. - It's pretty much upcycling.- OK.
0:18:15 > 0:18:17- Pick it up from anywhere. Cheap as...- Chips.- Chips.
0:18:17 > 0:18:21- Who's rocking this seat?- I'm rocking the boat.- Are you rocking it?
0:18:21 > 0:18:25- Right then.- Yeah.- Back on.- Oh!
0:18:25 > 0:18:29The mass of hard landscaping covering the plot
0:18:29 > 0:18:31is actually in good condition,
0:18:31 > 0:18:36so the boys are planning to recycle as much of it as they can.
0:18:36 > 0:18:40At the heart of the boys' design, are four beautiful flowerbeds.
0:18:42 > 0:18:45And right now, where they need to go is covered in slate.
0:18:47 > 0:18:50But there's a nice surprise lying underneath.
0:18:50 > 0:18:54- Oh!- Look at that.- Soil! Whoo-hoo!
0:18:55 > 0:18:57- That's not bad!- Look at that!
0:18:57 > 0:19:01Look at that! How about you mark it out before you dig up all the soil?
0:19:01 > 0:19:05- Yeah.- And make it muddy. - I'm going back in the sun.
0:19:05 > 0:19:08- It's cold here, isn't it?- Oh!
0:19:08 > 0:19:11This will make prepping the new flowerbeds a lot easier.
0:19:12 > 0:19:15- It's quite nice watching your brother work, isn't it?- Yeah.
0:19:15 > 0:19:17THEY LAUGH
0:19:17 > 0:19:19Nice one, young one.
0:19:19 > 0:19:21HARRY LAUGHS
0:19:21 > 0:19:24But the good news is short-lived.
0:19:25 > 0:19:28Designing on paper or on the computer beforehand
0:19:28 > 0:19:32tends to be easier because you can treat it as quite a blank canvas.
0:19:32 > 0:19:34Designing's easy but as soon as you encounter troubles
0:19:34 > 0:19:36when you get onsite...
0:19:36 > 0:19:38THEY LAUGH
0:19:43 > 0:19:44The boys designed the beds
0:19:44 > 0:19:48to match the rectangular shape of the plot, only there's a snag.
0:19:49 > 0:19:52It isn't as rectangular as they thought.
0:19:52 > 0:19:54- Bit of an irregular garden, isn't it?- Yeah.
0:19:54 > 0:19:58So we're going to have to pick one line to go off
0:19:58 > 0:20:01- and then work from that.- Yeah. It narrows a bit.
0:20:01 > 0:20:03We'll work with this boundary line
0:20:03 > 0:20:08- and then all the lines then work off that.- Yeah.- Let's look at your plan.
0:20:08 > 0:20:09Now, you're going off that
0:20:09 > 0:20:12- because that's giving you straight lines.- Yeah.
0:20:12 > 0:20:14- So you're ignoring the patios on the...?- No, going with it.
0:20:14 > 0:20:16- You're going with it. - Going to work with that.
0:20:16 > 0:20:19- So, we're not going to end up with rectangular beds.- No.
0:20:19 > 0:20:21We're going to end up with diamond-shaped beds.
0:20:21 > 0:20:24- But they'll look square, won't they?- Parallelogram?- Squishy square.
0:20:24 > 0:20:27- Rhombus.- Squishy square. - Rhombus?- Squishy square.
0:20:27 > 0:20:30- Look. That looks serious, doesn't it?- He's here.
0:20:30 > 0:20:32- The man and his tape. - The tape measure.
0:20:32 > 0:20:35To get the proportions right,
0:20:35 > 0:20:39each bed now has to work with all the different angles of the plot.
0:20:39 > 0:20:42There usually will be the odd thing that means it has to alter.
0:20:42 > 0:20:45But that's not a problem. Don't need to worry about that.
0:20:45 > 0:20:47You can adjust it. That's why using string lines
0:20:47 > 0:20:49makes it really easy cos you can just move it about.
0:20:49 > 0:20:52Meanwhile, Charlie's off to start working
0:20:52 > 0:20:56on her special project for Lillian at the side of the house.
0:20:56 > 0:21:00She's creating a private haven, with flower pots and a mirror,
0:21:00 > 0:21:02surrounded by colourful planting.
0:21:05 > 0:21:09- Lee.- Yep.- Would you come and do a bit of chopping of wood for me?
0:21:09 > 0:21:11- I'm sure I can manage that.- Yeah?
0:21:11 > 0:21:15The boys have already allocated all the budget to THEIR design,
0:21:15 > 0:21:19so anything extra has to be made virtually for free.
0:21:19 > 0:21:23I basically want to put it on the wall...
0:21:23 > 0:21:26and, like, hide that behind it.
0:21:26 > 0:21:30- Right, no problem.- So we need to get that... This bit's rotten, isn't it?
0:21:30 > 0:21:32Yeah, I'll get the best bit out of it.
0:21:32 > 0:21:37So, my idea is this is going to be on the wall,
0:21:37 > 0:21:40hidden by the fence, which I'll paint.
0:21:40 > 0:21:44Plant it up and the plants will all fluff over the top
0:21:44 > 0:21:49and then I'm going to attach some terracotta pots here as well
0:21:49 > 0:21:52and I think that will look quite pretty
0:21:52 > 0:21:56and I'm going to zhoosh them up with a bit of emulsion paint
0:21:56 > 0:21:59and I might put a mirror behind to reflect some light
0:21:59 > 0:22:01and reflect the plants as well.
0:22:01 > 0:22:04- Very good. We can sort that no problem.- Chop it then.
0:22:21 > 0:22:25- Cheers, me dear.- Thank you.- I'll let you go back to proper work now.
0:22:26 > 0:22:31- Yeah.- None of this faffing around with plants and planters!
0:22:33 > 0:22:34Having moved the slate,
0:22:34 > 0:22:38the boys now need to create the two beds near to the garage.
0:22:38 > 0:22:42But there's a whopping great patio there, some of which has to go.
0:22:43 > 0:22:46Any hardcore left underneath is being used
0:22:46 > 0:22:48to help make a new path down the garden.
0:22:48 > 0:22:51We're just removing the hardcore and the concrete
0:22:51 > 0:22:52that was beneath the slabs
0:22:52 > 0:22:55and then we'll turn that into nice soil for the plants.
0:22:55 > 0:22:58But David seems to be getting carried away.
0:22:58 > 0:23:01That one isn't coming up today though. We are cutting that one.
0:23:01 > 0:23:04- What one? Why?- Well, look at the string line, people.
0:23:04 > 0:23:06But I thought that was the flower bed here.
0:23:07 > 0:23:13- You're so right.- Yeah. Strewth! Oh, my goodness me!
0:23:13 > 0:23:15Good job Charlie's here!
0:23:17 > 0:23:20- I'll carry that.- Go on then. They're quite chunky.
0:23:22 > 0:23:28- Saying that...- You HAVE said it! It's a long walk to the skip.
0:23:28 > 0:23:31- I'll just put them back here for now then.- Yeah!
0:23:31 > 0:23:33Would you like a wheelbarrow, Harry?
0:23:35 > 0:23:38The old patio slabs were tightly laid,
0:23:38 > 0:23:41so smashing one allows access to the others.
0:23:43 > 0:23:45Right. Lovely jubbly.
0:23:45 > 0:23:47Harry was being all big and manly.
0:23:47 > 0:23:50He didn't realise quite how far away the skip is.
0:23:52 > 0:23:55The new beds actually cut into the existing patio.
0:23:55 > 0:23:59The slabs are in good condition, so rather than pay for new ones,
0:23:59 > 0:24:02the boys are counting on the landscapers' cutting skills.
0:24:04 > 0:24:07So, we're just going to cut this bit off here,
0:24:07 > 0:24:11that little guy, and then leave the rest of them.
0:24:11 > 0:24:15- Leave him, get rid of him and then get rid of that one there.- Great.
0:24:15 > 0:24:19- So that keeps those lines nice and parallel, doesn't it?- Love it!
0:24:23 > 0:24:27And the circular saw helps to make light work of it.
0:24:29 > 0:24:33- You're cutting the wrong ones! - No! No, I haven't.
0:24:34 > 0:24:37Are these the wrong ones? No, I've moved the line out the way.
0:24:37 > 0:24:39- No, I'm joking!- Argh!
0:24:46 > 0:24:52Yeah, we want to break the right ones. There you go. Lovely jubbly.
0:24:57 > 0:25:01Meanwhile, the shale is being moved into the middle of the garden
0:25:01 > 0:25:04to create the new seating area between the beds.
0:25:04 > 0:25:08So, we're reusing the MOT, which is this gravelly stuff,
0:25:08 > 0:25:13to fill in the pathway and then put the shale on top,
0:25:13 > 0:25:15so we'll only need a thinner layer.
0:25:15 > 0:25:19Saves money. Saves money, saves skip space as well.
0:25:19 > 0:25:24Hard landscaping is not cheap, so recycling existing materials
0:25:24 > 0:25:28is an excellent way to make your garden budget go further.
0:25:29 > 0:25:33Which is good news, in this case, as it's gone on the boys' plants,
0:25:33 > 0:25:35and they've just arrived.
0:25:35 > 0:25:37Beautiful, aren't they, these?
0:25:37 > 0:25:40The bad news is that the landscaping goes on.
0:25:40 > 0:25:43At least the boys are finally satisfied
0:25:43 > 0:25:47with the placing of the new beds. Now, they need to be properly edged.
0:25:47 > 0:25:49So, the bones of the design are down
0:25:49 > 0:25:51and you can see the beds here, around me.
0:25:51 > 0:25:54Now, all that we need to do is bring in the shuttering
0:25:54 > 0:25:58that will define the beds and keep the shale out from the soil.
0:25:58 > 0:26:02Simple timber edging or shuttering creates a nice finish
0:26:02 > 0:26:04and keeps the soil of the beds from spreading.
0:26:07 > 0:26:11Meanwhile, Lillian and Carrie have baked some fuel
0:26:11 > 0:26:13for the hard-working troops.
0:26:14 > 0:26:18- Hello!- Hello.- I'm out with the paintbrush.- Out with the paintbrush.
0:26:18 > 0:26:24- I am. Oh!- Would you like a cake? - Look at those! Wowee!
0:26:24 > 0:26:27And gardening-related. That's got to be Harry, hasn't it, really?
0:26:27 > 0:26:32- Are you going to be a flowerpot? - I'll be a flowerpot.- OK.- Boys!
0:26:34 > 0:26:37Come and look at your designated cakes.
0:26:37 > 0:26:39- HARRY:- Amazing - thank you very much! Look at these.
0:26:39 > 0:26:41I haven't tried it yet though.
0:26:41 > 0:26:44So, do you recognise that little bit of fence?
0:26:44 > 0:26:47I do recognise that little bit of fence.
0:26:47 > 0:26:49- I'm giving it a lick of paint... - Right.
0:26:49 > 0:26:51..and then I'm doing a bit of zhooshing
0:26:51 > 0:26:53with some plant pots for your bit here.
0:26:53 > 0:26:56- Oh, you're doing zhooshing? - Zhooshing. I can zhoosh.
0:26:56 > 0:27:00- It's an important part of gardening, isn't it?- Zhooshing?- Zhooshing.
0:27:00 > 0:27:03- We're going to leave you with the cakes.- Oh, crikey.
0:27:03 > 0:27:05- And you're off to the pub. - We're off to the pub.
0:27:05 > 0:27:08Please, please, can I go with them, sir?
0:27:08 > 0:27:10- HARRY:- Please, please. On your way!
0:27:10 > 0:27:14- Oi, cheeky! Cheeky boy! - LILLIAN:- Naughty, naughty!
0:27:14 > 0:27:15Tea break over,
0:27:15 > 0:27:19it's time for the boys to reveal their next low-cost feature.
0:27:21 > 0:27:24In the old garden, the garage was a real eyesore,
0:27:24 > 0:27:27so the boys have come up with something to help screen it.
0:27:27 > 0:27:30So, these are reinforced steel mesh sheets.
0:27:30 > 0:27:32You can pick it up from any builders' merchants
0:27:32 > 0:27:34and we managed to salvage this one.
0:27:34 > 0:27:37But this will be a really nice frame for climbers to grow up
0:27:37 > 0:27:39and just add that extra bit of greenery.
0:27:43 > 0:27:4850mm holes are drilled into timber posts so that the mesh can slot in.
0:27:48 > 0:27:49Fingers crossed.
0:27:50 > 0:27:54- Start at your end and work your way up.- He's in.
0:27:55 > 0:27:57- Oh.- Yeah, it's coming.
0:27:57 > 0:27:59Perfect!
0:27:59 > 0:28:03So, this will stand up and there'll be another post on this end.
0:28:03 > 0:28:06- Beautiful.- Yeah. - Really nice.- Spot on.
0:28:06 > 0:28:08But not to be outdone,
0:28:08 > 0:28:11Charlie's own upcycling project for Lillian is coming along.
0:28:13 > 0:28:16We haven't really spent much on this little project at all,
0:28:16 > 0:28:18cos the picket fence was free,
0:28:18 > 0:28:23we got little pots of paint, which are £1, £1.50,
0:28:23 > 0:28:28and the mirror is from a charity shop and it was £3.99.
0:28:28 > 0:28:32That was probably the most expensive bit - the plastic trough.
0:28:32 > 0:28:37And then a few bedding plants, which is really what Lillian wants.
0:28:37 > 0:28:40She wants to be able to potter and do her own bedding,
0:28:40 > 0:28:45so she can change it spring, autumn and summertime.
0:28:49 > 0:28:52David's wire mesh screen is ready to go in
0:28:52 > 0:28:54at the end of the border, nearest the garage.
0:28:54 > 0:28:57Bit of a long leg there, guys, but otherwise...
0:28:57 > 0:29:00really nice. That's going to look awesome, look.
0:29:00 > 0:29:02Your side up a bit.
0:29:02 > 0:29:03With the amelanchier shrub -
0:29:03 > 0:29:07look at the rusty colours of the leaves and the rust.
0:29:07 > 0:29:09It's going to look really nice.
0:29:09 > 0:29:11Slot it into place, a bit of concrete
0:29:11 > 0:29:13and it will be set for life.
0:29:14 > 0:29:18Meanwhile, Charlie's little garden has turned into an art project.
0:29:18 > 0:29:22I've changed ends of the skip. It's much warmer down this end.
0:29:22 > 0:29:24I was sat in the shade. It was very chilly.
0:29:24 > 0:29:28I'm not sure about this mirror. It may or may not make it.
0:29:34 > 0:29:36In the back, it's all hands to the pumps
0:29:36 > 0:29:39to get the garden ready for planting.
0:29:43 > 0:29:45We'll have to maybe trim off the edge.
0:29:45 > 0:29:47Get rid of that, trim off that edge.
0:29:47 > 0:29:52And Harry is taking his time over finishing the shuttering.
0:29:54 > 0:29:56So, landscaper Lee's got a present for him.
0:29:57 > 0:30:02- Need a pencil?- Yeah.- Built one specially, mate.- Oh!
0:30:02 > 0:30:04Try putting that one behind your ear.
0:30:05 > 0:30:08Doesn't really go behind the ear, does it?
0:30:08 > 0:30:09Where am I supposed to put it?
0:30:16 > 0:30:19It looks like it needs to go down three inches, two inches.
0:30:19 > 0:30:23Blimey, this is looking a bit like a garden now, isn't it?
0:30:23 > 0:30:26And not a trip hazard with lots of strings everywhere.
0:30:26 > 0:30:28Safety first, safety first.
0:30:28 > 0:30:30Charlie's keen to get the bosses' approval
0:30:30 > 0:30:32for her project round the corner.
0:30:32 > 0:30:35- I love the colour. - Yeah, it's nice.- Lime green.
0:30:35 > 0:30:39- You love your green, don't you? - With fuchsia pink.- Oh!- Oh, God.
0:30:40 > 0:30:44- No, sky blue, actually. That colour.- I know.
0:30:44 > 0:30:47For once, we've got a bit of sky blue. It's not cloud grey.
0:30:47 > 0:30:53It's a bit chilly though. That wind! Glad I've still got my thermals on.
0:30:53 > 0:30:55Brrr!
0:30:56 > 0:31:00The final task before planting is to break up the soil
0:31:00 > 0:31:03that had been compacted by the paving slabs.
0:31:06 > 0:31:08I've also got some mushroom compost,
0:31:08 > 0:31:13which is going to add nutrients to the soil
0:31:13 > 0:31:16and, again, really help aerate it.
0:31:16 > 0:31:20Mushroom compost also retains water,
0:31:20 > 0:31:22so it's good for establishing new plants.
0:31:24 > 0:31:27The soil is the most important thing when you're planting.
0:31:27 > 0:31:30If you prep the soil well, then the plants are going to do beautifully.
0:31:32 > 0:31:35- Charlie, you've got one job. - What's that?- Bubble watching.
0:31:35 > 0:31:37- Bubble watching? I can bubble watch.- OK.
0:31:37 > 0:31:41Charlie's improvised wall garden is almost finished.
0:31:41 > 0:31:45Slightly over to me. Just recess the other end slightly.
0:31:45 > 0:31:49I have to say, even if she doesn't use it for plants,
0:31:49 > 0:31:52it would be really handy just to put your tea there
0:31:52 > 0:31:57or your, you know...bottle of wine, champagne.
0:31:58 > 0:32:01- That looks all right!- Try your... - My pot.
0:32:01 > 0:32:03- ..your planter in it now, see whether that fits.- Yeah.
0:32:03 > 0:32:07- If it doesn't, I'm going home! - THEY LAUGH
0:32:07 > 0:32:10- Look at that! Oh, hello! - Like a glove and a chicken's lip.
0:32:10 > 0:32:13And she'll have a beautiful view of the garden.
0:32:13 > 0:32:17And her view is improving by the minute.
0:32:18 > 0:32:20Key to the boys' design are three trees
0:32:20 > 0:32:23that provide height in the last third of the garden.
0:32:23 > 0:32:26First in are the two amelanchiers.
0:32:26 > 0:32:30- What do you think of this guy? - They are really pretty.
0:32:30 > 0:32:33When you see these out in the spring, you think,
0:32:33 > 0:32:37"Yes, we're going in the right direction. Summer is coming."
0:32:37 > 0:32:39It's the perfect tree. It's more like a shrub, isn't it?
0:32:39 > 0:32:42- For a small garden like this, it doesn't overpower you.- Yeah.
0:32:42 > 0:32:45Not mad on the size of the pot it's in though.
0:32:46 > 0:32:48It's all worth is in the end, isn't it?
0:32:50 > 0:32:53These mature trees may be a little more expensive
0:32:53 > 0:32:57but they give that instant wow factor.
0:32:59 > 0:33:04- A little bit more.- Whoo, whoo! There you go.- Great.
0:33:04 > 0:33:07- I reckon that's the face here, so... - Do you?- Yeah.
0:33:10 > 0:33:14- Oh, God!- It's quite heavy, isn't it? - Oh, that is perfect, mate!- Yeah.
0:33:14 > 0:33:16That's perfect.
0:33:16 > 0:33:20But a small tree like this does need careful planting.
0:33:20 > 0:33:24What you can do is just tease the roots.
0:33:24 > 0:33:27They've been a bit pot-bound, so give them a little start.
0:33:27 > 0:33:30And what's nice is they're not going to keep going round and round
0:33:30 > 0:33:32in a circle in the hole you've dug.
0:33:32 > 0:33:35They have the chance to penetrate out into the outer soil.
0:33:38 > 0:33:42- That looks pretty good from here. - Yeah, it's perfect.- Yeah, lovely.
0:33:42 > 0:33:44As well as their aesthetic value,
0:33:44 > 0:33:46these trees also help provide privacy,
0:33:46 > 0:33:48particularly when they're in full bloom.
0:33:49 > 0:33:53Trees are just one way to help a garden that is overlooked.
0:34:00 > 0:34:04Landscape designer Daniel Shea often deals with clients
0:34:04 > 0:34:07with privacy high on their wish list.
0:34:07 > 0:34:09It's all about raising boundaries,
0:34:09 > 0:34:11bringing in trees to screen off windows.
0:34:11 > 0:34:13Getting that feeling of intimacy straightaway
0:34:13 > 0:34:15is something you want to achieve.
0:34:15 > 0:34:19Planning restrictions mean you can generally raise your boundary
0:34:19 > 0:34:21to a maximum height of two metres.
0:34:22 > 0:34:25This property was overlooked by several houses,
0:34:25 > 0:34:29so to ensure privacy, the garden was sunk and trees planted.
0:34:30 > 0:34:32We brought in three silver birch.
0:34:32 > 0:34:34They're nice trees, they don't cast too much shade
0:34:34 > 0:34:38and they've got a nice, contemporary, clean, fresh feel.
0:34:38 > 0:34:41But be careful you don't build up too far.
0:34:41 > 0:34:45If you go too much, you can feel like you've enclosed yourself in
0:34:45 > 0:34:48but you've also blocked out light
0:34:48 > 0:34:51and it can be quite an intimidating space.
0:34:51 > 0:34:53You don't want to make them too brutal.
0:34:53 > 0:34:57To increase the height of your boundary, trellis is another option.
0:34:59 > 0:35:00The long linear lines -
0:35:00 > 0:35:03they let lots of light in but you can't see beyond them.
0:35:03 > 0:35:06All you can see is shadows. The light pours and flows in
0:35:06 > 0:35:09and it really creates this feeling of warmth.
0:35:09 > 0:35:12It's all about getting the balance right
0:35:12 > 0:35:14and making it work with the space you have.
0:35:17 > 0:35:20Really think about your boundaries first, I'd say.
0:35:20 > 0:35:23Once they're established, you've kind of built your walls,
0:35:23 > 0:35:26you've built your room, and then it's just about how you dress it.
0:35:30 > 0:35:34Back in Walsall, the planting is in full swing.
0:35:36 > 0:35:38The boys are filling the beds
0:35:38 > 0:35:41with a combination of flowering perennials and grasses.
0:35:41 > 0:35:43The plants I'm using now is actaea,
0:35:43 > 0:35:47and that has a lovely white brushstroke flower, and sanguisorba,
0:35:47 > 0:35:51which has this lovely dark tonal red wine flower colour
0:35:51 > 0:35:53and, again, these two are great for wildlife.
0:35:54 > 0:35:57And whilst they're preoccupied with placing,
0:35:57 > 0:36:00Charlie's taking full advantage.
0:36:00 > 0:36:02And don't tell the boys,
0:36:02 > 0:36:06but I'm going to steal two of their plants for round my bit.
0:36:06 > 0:36:10I'm going to steal the jasmine polyanthum
0:36:10 > 0:36:13and I'm also going to steal one of their grasses.
0:36:18 > 0:36:22This is Deschampsia flexuosa, or wavy hair grass,
0:36:22 > 0:36:24and you can see why.
0:36:24 > 0:36:25Just really gorgeous, really natural,
0:36:25 > 0:36:28and I think it's going to fit well with this planting scheme
0:36:28 > 0:36:30and give them a patch of the wild.
0:36:33 > 0:36:35This planting scheme is quite bold.
0:36:35 > 0:36:37There's lots of colours here that are going to stand out.
0:36:37 > 0:36:39You've got the sanguisorba with this deep red,
0:36:39 > 0:36:43anemones, which will be lovely and white later on in the season,
0:36:43 > 0:36:46catmints, which will give a flood of blues and purples in the summer.
0:36:46 > 0:36:51Meanwhile, round the corner, in Lillian's private garden,
0:36:51 > 0:36:54landscaper Lee's work is still not done.
0:36:54 > 0:36:59I think I want the mirror up. I'm not 100% sure, but...
0:37:00 > 0:37:02See, I'm thinking...
0:37:06 > 0:37:08Something like that, yeah?
0:37:12 > 0:37:14Watch my plants, watch my plants, you!
0:37:14 > 0:37:17THEY LAUGH
0:37:17 > 0:37:22- That's it.- Oops.- Hang on.- That's it. - Centralise it.
0:37:22 > 0:37:28- Yeah. And then that jasmine. The boys haven't noticed.- Ssh!
0:37:28 > 0:37:31And I'm going to pop it in here and train it round
0:37:31 > 0:37:35and the wall will give it the protection it needs.
0:37:35 > 0:37:38And then it's a case of getting those pots on there.
0:37:38 > 0:37:41Yeah, I don't think that looks half bad. It's all right.
0:37:44 > 0:37:48This mushroom compost is doing a hell of a job, isn't it?
0:37:48 > 0:37:51- It's amazing. You put a load in there, didn't you?- Yeah.
0:37:51 > 0:37:53The last of the trees, the cherry, is going in
0:37:53 > 0:37:57and the boys have asked Charlie to plant the mesh screen behind it.
0:37:59 > 0:38:02So, the boys have got this cherry here. Lovely pink flowers on it.
0:38:02 > 0:38:05It's going to add some height to the garden.
0:38:05 > 0:38:08And they want this Clematis montana "Pink Perfection"
0:38:08 > 0:38:11to pick up the cherry flower colours.
0:38:11 > 0:38:15So far, despite the cold, we've been lucky with the weather.
0:38:16 > 0:38:18But that's about to change.
0:38:20 > 0:38:24- Oh, this is not nice, is it? Snow! - I know.
0:38:24 > 0:38:25It's actually snowing!
0:38:27 > 0:38:29Bit blowy out here, isn't it?
0:38:29 > 0:38:33They're all getting broken by this wind!
0:38:33 > 0:38:36- Well, that looks like it's bashed to bits, doesn't it?- Yeah.
0:38:36 > 0:38:38Right, thank you very much.
0:38:40 > 0:38:43- Looks beautiful, doesn't it, in the snow?- Yeah.
0:38:46 > 0:38:49At least there's a new fence to hide behind.
0:38:49 > 0:38:50If this weather keeps on as it is,
0:38:50 > 0:38:53we're not going to have anything to see. It's covered in snow.
0:38:53 > 0:38:56- I don't think we'll be able to see YOU!- I'm not doing very well.
0:38:56 > 0:38:59- I'm taking it in the face. - You're getting the brunt of it.
0:38:59 > 0:39:02Fortunately, it's just a passing flurry,
0:39:02 > 0:39:05so the team can push on to finish the garden.
0:39:06 > 0:39:10It's taken some serious labour to break through the concrete
0:39:10 > 0:39:12and replace it with a garden.
0:39:14 > 0:39:17And as the much-loved barbecue returns,
0:39:17 > 0:39:20Lillian and Carrie's new garden is finished.
0:39:31 > 0:39:34Before, this garden was more like a car park,
0:39:34 > 0:39:38covered in wall-to-wall concrete and shale and devoid of life.
0:39:40 > 0:39:44Now the boys have transformed it into a garden
0:39:44 > 0:39:46for all three ladies to enjoy.
0:39:49 > 0:39:51A new fence was a must and now it's in,
0:39:51 > 0:39:54the noisy, exposed road is a thing of the past.
0:39:55 > 0:39:58But it ate up almost half the budget,
0:39:58 > 0:40:00so the boys have had to beg, borrow and steal
0:40:00 > 0:40:02to transform the space within.
0:40:06 > 0:40:09The existing landscaping was repositioned,
0:40:09 > 0:40:11opening up the space for four flower beds
0:40:11 > 0:40:15that surround a social area, perfect for family barbecues.
0:40:20 > 0:40:22The boys focussed the rest of the budget
0:40:22 > 0:40:25on bringing colour and texture to the garden.
0:40:25 > 0:40:29The beds are filled with grasses and herbaceous perennials
0:40:29 > 0:40:30for year-round colour.
0:40:34 > 0:40:37Adding to the wow factor are the stunning amelanchier
0:40:37 > 0:40:40and cherry trees, costing £120 each.
0:40:40 > 0:40:43They give instant height to the area.
0:40:45 > 0:40:49To screen off the ugly garage door, David created an improvised trellis.
0:40:50 > 0:40:54It didn't cost a penny and, once the clematis has clambered over it,
0:40:54 > 0:40:56it will be enveloped in pink flowers.
0:41:00 > 0:41:02And, as promised,
0:41:02 > 0:41:06Charlie has given Lillian her own little area to potter around -
0:41:06 > 0:41:11a walled garden, made from anything she could find in the skip.
0:41:16 > 0:41:17This was designed to be a garden
0:41:17 > 0:41:21that helped this family spend quality time together.
0:41:21 > 0:41:24It's time to see if the boys have delivered.
0:41:24 > 0:41:26Right, keep walking.
0:41:26 > 0:41:29I think the garden looks really fabulous.
0:41:29 > 0:41:32It's one of my favourites that they've done.
0:41:33 > 0:41:39- Open your eyes.- Have a look at it. - Oh!- Wow!- Oh, it's lovely!
0:41:39 > 0:41:40You love it, great.
0:41:40 > 0:41:44- So, this is where you sit down, have your morning coffee.- Yeah. Oh!
0:41:44 > 0:41:48- It's a garden! - Oh, it's beautiful!- Oh, wow.
0:41:48 > 0:41:52- Oh, it's gorgeous! - What do you think of the fence?
0:41:52 > 0:41:57- That was the main thing.- I love the fence! I absolutely adore the fence.
0:41:57 > 0:41:59- It's fantastic.- It's just amazing.
0:41:59 > 0:42:04- It's making me cry.- Oh!- I just don't know where to look first.
0:42:04 > 0:42:06So we've got all the different plants here,
0:42:06 > 0:42:09- like the grasses, which give lovely interest and movement.- Gorgeous.
0:42:09 > 0:42:12We've got two amelanchier, kind of shrubs,
0:42:12 > 0:42:15so they won't grow too large. But you can see this lovely blossom.
0:42:15 > 0:42:17- Get lots of little birdies. - Yes!- They'll love it.
0:42:17 > 0:42:19Lots of birdies in the garden.
0:42:19 > 0:42:22And this area here, you can have your table and chairs
0:42:22 > 0:42:25and just enough room for the whole family,
0:42:25 > 0:42:27all three of you, to sit around here and enjoy it.
0:42:27 > 0:42:31That's right, yeah. It's what we need. And a lovely fence.
0:42:31 > 0:42:33- It's a good-looking fence, isn't it? - It is!
0:42:33 > 0:42:35I'm going to put my hands up and say it.
0:42:35 > 0:42:37Paul did a great job of that, yeah. He did a good job.
0:42:42 > 0:42:44I got quite emotional when I walked out.
0:42:44 > 0:42:48I didn't know what to expect, to be honest. Amazing.
0:42:48 > 0:42:50Fantastic. I love the fence.
0:42:53 > 0:42:56Do Lillian and Carrie think their cash has been well spent?
0:42:56 > 0:42:58I think it's been good value for money.
0:42:58 > 0:43:01We've definitely got everything that we wanted.
0:43:01 > 0:43:04It has exceeded our expectations,
0:43:04 > 0:43:07with the plants, the design, the fence.
0:43:07 > 0:43:08It's just everything.
