0:00:03 > 0:00:06With her can-do attitude, love of simple gardens and decades
0:00:06 > 0:00:09of experience... Hello! ..Charlie Dimmock is one
0:00:09 > 0:00:13of Britain's best-loved gardeners. Looking good, boys!
0:00:13 > 0:00:17But the new kids on the gardening block are the Rich brothers.
0:00:17 > 0:00:20We want to be the brothers that change people's perceptions
0:00:20 > 0:00:24of gardeners. Winners of multiple medals at the Chelsea Flower Show...
0:00:24 > 0:00:25Oh, good turn! Amazing, isn't it?
0:00:25 > 0:00:30..the boys have become known for their dramatic outdoor spaces.
0:00:30 > 0:00:35Now, these two different generations of gardening are going head-to head.
0:00:35 > 0:00:39I know they've got a gold medal, but I can ham up with a few ideas.
0:00:39 > 0:00:43They are meeting frustrated garden owners across the country...
0:00:43 > 0:00:47The photos made it look tiny. It is, isn't it?
0:00:47 > 0:00:50I'm sure you've seen larger. I don't know what to do with it.
0:00:50 > 0:00:53..and will each pitch them a design based on their needs... Wow!
0:00:53 > 0:00:57..and budget. That looks really exciting. This doesn't look like
0:00:57 > 0:01:00it could be our garden. The winner... Whoo!
0:01:00 > 0:01:02ALL: Whoo!
0:01:02 > 0:01:05..brings their design to life... Hold on, hold on!
0:01:05 > 0:01:08Sweet as a nut! ..and the loser has to help them build it.
0:01:08 > 0:01:11Oh, I'm getting irritated now. We are, sort of, faffing around.
0:01:11 > 0:01:15This is what happens... Does he ever get irritating? All the time.
0:01:15 > 0:01:19..when different styles collide... Who chose these? One, two, three...
0:01:21 > 0:01:23This looks like your design. Yeah!
0:01:23 > 0:01:27..to turn garden dreams into reality.
0:01:27 > 0:01:28Wow! Open your eyes.
0:01:28 > 0:01:30Wow! Whoa!
0:01:30 > 0:01:31It's amazing.
0:01:31 > 0:01:33Oh! It's beautiful.
0:01:40 > 0:01:43It's time for Charlie and the Rich brothers to discover
0:01:43 > 0:01:46whose garden they are going head-to-head over his time.
0:01:48 > 0:01:51We have just heard from this lovely couple in Lancashire,
0:01:51 > 0:01:55Lorna and Luciano. He is from Sicily and has got two Italian restaurants.
0:01:58 > 0:02:03Luciano came to the UK 12 years ago and lives in Bolton, with his wife
0:02:03 > 0:02:06Lorna and their two sons, Bruno and Rocco.
0:02:08 > 0:02:12We all met in this restaurant in which I used to be there -
0:02:12 > 0:02:15restaurant manager in there. And I was working part time.
0:02:15 > 0:02:18That was about ten years ago? Yeah, was about ten years ago.
0:02:18 > 0:02:20They have just moved in to this house seven months ago
0:02:20 > 0:02:22and finished modernising it.
0:02:22 > 0:02:24But the garden has, kind of, been left.
0:02:24 > 0:02:26Well, it looks pretty cool, doesn't it?
0:02:26 > 0:02:27There is gigantic hedge around,
0:02:27 > 0:02:30which is nice and green, for a boundary. And the patio -
0:02:30 > 0:02:33that looks in quite good condition. It doesn't look that bad!
0:02:33 > 0:02:35I know what you mean.
0:02:35 > 0:02:38There's lots to like about this garden, and in theory,
0:02:38 > 0:02:41with a little TLC, it could be lovely, but in practice,
0:02:41 > 0:02:44it doesn't work for a family with two young children.
0:02:46 > 0:02:48There is a lot of stone. A lot of stone edges.
0:02:48 > 0:02:50We have got a five-year-old and a one-year-old.
0:02:50 > 0:02:53so it's like "Careful, don't run!" "Don't do this, don't do that."
0:02:53 > 0:02:55And we don't want that. We want them to run free
0:02:55 > 0:02:56without hurting themselves.
0:02:58 > 0:03:01So, making the garden safe is a priority,
0:03:01 > 0:03:03but that is not the only thing on their wish list.
0:03:03 > 0:03:06It would be good to have a nice barbie, a nice pizza oven,
0:03:06 > 0:03:10and make out own dough and make our own pizza. Yeah. Proper. Yeah.
0:03:10 > 0:03:11That would be great.
0:03:12 > 0:03:15At 70 square metres, this is a pretty big plot
0:03:15 > 0:03:19and because it needs to be a kids' garden and an entertainment space,
0:03:19 > 0:03:22the couple have saved hard to get what they want.
0:03:22 > 0:03:24Careful on the steps!
0:03:24 > 0:03:26Quite a good budget on this one -
0:03:26 > 0:03:28?6,500.
0:03:28 > 0:03:31Wow! That is big.
0:03:31 > 0:03:35Charlie and the Rich brothers now know the extent of the challenge
0:03:35 > 0:03:38that faces them. They will now compete for the chance to makeover
0:03:38 > 0:03:40Lorna and Luciano's garden.
0:03:42 > 0:03:44So, Charlie and the boys go head to head,
0:03:44 > 0:03:48and each come up with a design that works within the family's budget.
0:03:51 > 0:03:54The couple will then have to choose a winner,
0:03:54 > 0:03:58and whoever loses will have to help the winner build the garden.
0:04:01 > 0:04:03It's the day of the pitch,
0:04:03 > 0:04:05and Charlie and the brothers are in Bolton
0:04:05 > 0:04:08to present their finished designs to Lorna and Luciano.
0:04:08 > 0:04:11Who will the couple go for?
0:04:11 > 0:04:16Will it be Charlie with her practical approach and years of experience in creating family gardens?
0:04:16 > 0:04:20Here we go. Wow. Wow. That looks amazing.
0:04:20 > 0:04:24Or will they be hoping that the boys, with their landscaping savvy,
0:04:24 > 0:04:28will create a space that ticks all their boxes?
0:04:28 > 0:04:30Oh, wow. That looks good, eh?
0:04:30 > 0:04:31Good first impressions. Good.
0:04:31 > 0:04:35It all boils down to this - the pitch.
0:04:35 > 0:04:37We know that you needed a very family garden -
0:04:37 > 0:04:40something that is really family-orientated - and what
0:04:40 > 0:04:43we have done is split it subtly into two kind of spaces.
0:04:43 > 0:04:45You have got more of an adult-orientated area here
0:04:45 > 0:04:49and then you have got the more child-friendly area at the back.
0:04:49 > 0:04:51We want to use this original patio area at the top as your
0:04:51 > 0:04:55al fresco area. Yes. You can have the little pizza oven,
0:04:55 > 0:04:59so really encourage you to eat out and enjoy that aspect of the garden.
0:04:59 > 0:05:02That sounds amazing. So, this is half a garden for the grown-ups
0:05:02 > 0:05:06and half for your children to use up all their energy.
0:05:06 > 0:05:12I have basically taken the wall out on the patio, the lower patio.
0:05:12 > 0:05:16That way, it will make that patio seem bigger. And then, I want to
0:05:16 > 0:05:21sweep the lawn up to this higher level... OK. ..which is going to be
0:05:21 > 0:05:25the adults' area, with your pizza oven.
0:05:26 > 0:05:30Both designers have taken on board that Luciano's a dab hand
0:05:30 > 0:05:35with the pizza dough and wants an entertainment space.
0:05:37 > 0:05:40But Charlie is about to go one better and has included
0:05:40 > 0:05:43some Mediterranean planting as a nod to Luciano's heritage.
0:05:45 > 0:05:48To get the Italian, sort of, feel to it, I have gone for
0:05:48 > 0:05:54cypress trees - Italian cypress trees - that spiral round, following
0:05:54 > 0:05:57the arc of the lawn round, up to this patio area.
0:05:57 > 0:05:59Oh, that's lovely.
0:05:59 > 0:06:04Not to be outdone, the boys have also chosen plants that will remind
0:06:04 > 0:06:09Luciano of home - and will stand up to the rigour of two young boys.
0:06:09 > 0:06:13We want to give you large drifts of lavender and this is, kind of,
0:06:13 > 0:06:16going to give you this lovely, kind of, floral display in the summer,
0:06:16 > 0:06:20but will give you nice, robust, kind of beds, so that Rocco and Bruno
0:06:20 > 0:06:23can kick footballs in them and they are not going to mess up,
0:06:23 > 0:06:26you know, all those beds. We have also got this avenue of olive trees
0:06:26 > 0:06:30here, as well, so it's a really nice extended avenue that leads your eye
0:06:30 > 0:06:33down the garden. Oh, I like that.
0:06:33 > 0:06:37The designers seem to be neck-and-neck, at this stage.
0:06:37 > 0:06:40But how will their gardens appeal to Bruno and Rocco?
0:06:40 > 0:06:46This area down the bottom of the garden is going to be their area.
0:06:46 > 0:06:51The entrance way is a tunnel, that they will have to crawl through.
0:06:51 > 0:06:53That sounds amazing. I think I will play with it.
0:06:53 > 0:06:55ALL LAUGH
0:06:55 > 0:06:58The back here is going to be the child-friendly area.
0:06:58 > 0:07:01We want to make it fun, so you enter through this willow tunnel
0:07:01 > 0:07:04and it would be living, so it would be something which could change.
0:07:04 > 0:07:08You could trim it or add to it. This would lead to a softer lawn area,
0:07:08 > 0:07:10where you could have a little willow hut.
0:07:10 > 0:07:13Great minds think alike and, incredibly, the designers
0:07:13 > 0:07:18have had very similar ideas. But Charlie hasn't finished yet.
0:07:18 > 0:07:20She has added a water feature.
0:07:22 > 0:07:25I've got very shallow trays of water that drop from one level
0:07:25 > 0:07:28to the next and then disappear into a reservoir.
0:07:28 > 0:07:32So, the children will be able to put their hands under the running water,
0:07:32 > 0:07:35but it is so shallow that it won't be a hazard to them.
0:07:35 > 0:07:39That sounds amazing. That sounds perfect. They would love that.
0:07:39 > 0:07:41I will leave you to think on it. Thank you. Thank you.
0:07:41 > 0:07:45A smart move from Charlie, but will it help her win? Time's up.
0:07:45 > 0:07:48Cheers, guys. Thank you. Thank you so much.
0:07:48 > 0:07:51It is now all down to Lorna and Luciano to decide.
0:07:51 > 0:07:55Will they plump for the Rich brothers' design, with the avenue
0:07:55 > 0:07:59of olive trees, drifts of fragrant lavender and living willow huts?
0:08:01 > 0:08:04Or will they choose Charlie's cypress trees,
0:08:04 > 0:08:06sweeping lawn and water feature?
0:08:10 > 0:08:12It's decision time.
0:08:12 > 0:08:14Hi! Hey!
0:08:14 > 0:08:15Hello.
0:08:16 > 0:08:20Right, it's been made. Tough this. It's not been easy, at all.
0:08:20 > 0:08:23But the design we have gone with is...
0:08:25 > 0:08:28..Charlie's! Whee! That water feature! Ha-ha!
0:08:28 > 0:08:30I'm sure it wasn't JUST the water feature!
0:08:30 > 0:08:32Why did you end up with mine?
0:08:32 > 0:08:35So, you're right - the water feature.
0:08:35 > 0:08:37LAUGHTER
0:08:37 > 0:08:41I knew it! But it is not all good news.
0:08:41 > 0:08:44I think the only thing we'd say that wasn't, kind of,
0:08:44 > 0:08:47in either design, if there's any possibility we could add in,
0:08:47 > 0:08:50just that there wasn't quite enough for the kids in this top area.
0:08:50 > 0:08:53Something to climb on. A swing. Something like that. Monkey bars,
0:08:53 > 0:08:57kind of thing. I've still got some money left in the budget,
0:08:57 > 0:08:59so I will see what we can fit in.
0:08:59 > 0:09:01And fit in the space.
0:09:02 > 0:09:05I'm just dead excited now, to see it come to life.
0:09:05 > 0:09:09So, it's going to be Charlie's design that gets built this time.
0:09:09 > 0:09:11But she's going to need the boys' help
0:09:11 > 0:09:12to give the couple what they want.
0:09:19 > 0:09:21It's early morning in Bolton
0:09:21 > 0:09:25and work on Lorna and Luciano's garden starts with gusto.
0:09:25 > 0:09:30While Charlie's away finalising some of the finer details of her design,
0:09:30 > 0:09:33the landscapers begin clearing the garden.
0:09:33 > 0:09:34OK!
0:09:36 > 0:09:38Have it! In the skip!
0:09:38 > 0:09:41And the professional oven installers that Charlie's employed
0:09:41 > 0:09:43are making good progress with the pizza oven.
0:09:46 > 0:09:50Meanwhile, Lee and Andy set about dismantling the wall
0:09:50 > 0:09:54that Charlie wants replaced with a less hazardous slope.
0:09:54 > 0:09:58The salvaged stones are going to be used for her bespoke water feature,
0:09:58 > 0:10:02which has been specially designed to fit into the existing steps.
0:10:02 > 0:10:05Just make sure they don't come round to the back now...
0:10:05 > 0:10:09Now Charlie and the boys have arrived, and she's keen to set them
0:10:09 > 0:10:12one of the biggest challenges in the new garden.
0:10:12 > 0:10:15Going to have a few problems with levels, getting stuff in and out.
0:10:15 > 0:10:18And that water feature as well. Yeah. See, that'll be fine,
0:10:18 > 0:10:19no-problems water feature.
0:10:19 > 0:10:22That's the pivotal point of the garden, isn't it? No!
0:10:22 > 0:10:24The pivotal point is going to be
0:10:24 > 0:10:26the tunnel into the children's play area.
0:10:26 > 0:10:29Nice. So, that is where I want you guys.
0:10:29 > 0:10:33That's a dream project for us! Yeah? I feel the pressure a wee bit!
0:10:38 > 0:10:41But before the boys can place the tunnel, there is the small issue
0:10:41 > 0:10:45of the extra feature Lorna and Luciano asked for.
0:10:45 > 0:10:48The children's area in Charlie's garden now has to fit around
0:10:48 > 0:10:50a giant climbing frame.
0:10:52 > 0:10:55The construction looks good, but we have this to get in.
0:10:55 > 0:10:58We need to get that in position, to find out where that's going.
0:10:58 > 0:11:01This is the old tunnel tube, is it? Yeah. Nice. It looks quite heavy
0:11:01 > 0:11:05and chunky. I know. I think we might need a few more men.
0:11:05 > 0:11:06Pull!
0:11:08 > 0:11:09OK, on two... Two!
0:11:09 > 0:11:11ALL LAUGH
0:11:13 > 0:11:16Higher, higher, higher. Paul, your end's dragging.
0:11:16 > 0:11:18That's the one! Don't push me!
0:11:21 > 0:11:24I've got it. Right round, right round.
0:11:24 > 0:11:25All the way. Go on, man.
0:11:25 > 0:11:28So we need to get the swing bit on,
0:11:28 > 0:11:29so we can see exactly the lengths... Yeah.
0:11:29 > 0:11:33..before we level it all up and get it in position.
0:11:34 > 0:11:37But that means following the instructions,
0:11:37 > 0:11:40which has never been the boys' strong point.
0:11:40 > 0:11:43Well, I'm guessing... It doesn't actually show us. Oh, yeah.
0:11:43 > 0:11:47Knowing this could take a while, Charlie has asked Lorna and Luciano
0:11:47 > 0:11:51to muck in and build some of the other play equipment.
0:11:54 > 0:11:57Meanwhile, the water feature is taking shape.
0:11:59 > 0:12:02This is coming together well, guys.
0:12:02 > 0:12:04It's coming on nice. It's looking good. This is fab.
0:12:04 > 0:12:06We're getting there, aren't we?
0:12:06 > 0:12:09It's got a bit of formality, you know, cos the Italians like
0:12:09 > 0:12:12their formal gardens. So there is a bit of formality,
0:12:12 > 0:12:16but slightly quirky. We have a reservoir down the bottom
0:12:16 > 0:12:19and that will hold all the water, that then is recirculated
0:12:19 > 0:12:24up to the top and it will just drop down and down and disappear.
0:12:24 > 0:12:27So the children, they can put their hands under,
0:12:27 > 0:12:29they will be able to splash in the water.
0:12:29 > 0:12:31and all the scented plants round here
0:12:31 > 0:12:34will be highlighted, because the moisture, the humidity,
0:12:34 > 0:12:38actually picks the scent up and makes them smell even better.
0:12:40 > 0:12:43Now the feature is in place, Andy and Lee can reshape
0:12:43 > 0:12:46the old stone from the wall they demolished
0:12:46 > 0:12:49and repoint it around the steel trays.
0:12:49 > 0:12:53But it is up on the patio where Luciano's new toy is taking shape.
0:12:55 > 0:12:59Charlie has thrown over ?2,000 of the budget at it, so she is keen
0:12:59 > 0:13:01to make sure it works.
0:13:01 > 0:13:04My, that is a posh pizza oven! It has even got a thermometer. Yep.
0:13:04 > 0:13:07So, go on, then, how does it all work?
0:13:07 > 0:13:10What you do is, you light your fire here. OK.
0:13:10 > 0:13:14So just like with wood? Yeah. Get it all going. Once it is all going,
0:13:14 > 0:13:18you then push the wood back, which then gives you the cooking area
0:13:18 > 0:13:22for your pizza, in the centre. The smoke comes out of the top, here.
0:13:22 > 0:13:25Oh, that is good, then. It is far enough away from the wisteria,
0:13:25 > 0:13:27cos I thought it was at the back and it would go up there,
0:13:27 > 0:13:31which would be... No, it all just comes out here. At the front. That is much better.
0:13:33 > 0:13:38So now she knows the wisteria won't get scorched, Charlie rolls up
0:13:38 > 0:13:41her sleeves and attempts to tackle the unruly climber,
0:13:41 > 0:13:44while on the other side of the garden...
0:13:44 > 0:13:47It's showing me that. It's not telling me what that is...
0:13:47 > 0:13:52..or how to put that on. ..there is a lot of head scratching going on.
0:13:52 > 0:13:55It doesn't look much different, does it?
0:13:56 > 0:13:58Oh, thickness?
0:14:00 > 0:14:01I'll go back to my wisteria.
0:14:02 > 0:14:05They're not long enough for that. No. Isn't it?
0:14:05 > 0:14:06No.
0:14:08 > 0:14:10The wisteria has outgrown the trellis
0:14:10 > 0:14:14and the trellis has seen better days, so it has to go.
0:14:14 > 0:14:17Ideally, Charlie would prune the plant and retrain it,
0:14:17 > 0:14:20but now isn't the right time as it is about to flower.
0:14:20 > 0:14:24If I cut this now, you will find it will bleed,
0:14:24 > 0:14:27which will take the vigour out of the climber itself.
0:14:27 > 0:14:31Also, they will lose all their lovely flowers.
0:14:31 > 0:14:33It's best to prune wisteria...
0:14:34 > 0:14:38..when they are dormant, in the winter, to get the framework,
0:14:38 > 0:14:41and then, in the summertime, when you get these long, whippy ones,
0:14:41 > 0:14:44you take those back by two-thirds. That increases the number
0:14:44 > 0:14:46of flowering spurs you get.
0:14:47 > 0:14:51The boys are now finally getting somewhere with Rocco and Bruno's
0:14:51 > 0:14:54climbing frame. But it needs more space to be safe,
0:14:54 > 0:14:57and currently there's a tree in the way.
0:14:57 > 0:14:59Charlie wants to check with
0:14:59 > 0:15:02Lorna and Luciano, before the saws come out.
0:15:02 > 0:15:04So, that conifer.
0:15:04 > 0:15:06Do you mind if we take it out?
0:15:06 > 0:15:10Because the climbing frame that you chose is a bit bigger than we were
0:15:10 > 0:15:14sort of expecting. It shouldn't be a problem to take it off.
0:15:14 > 0:15:17So then, can all go over and then there will be enough space
0:15:17 > 0:15:20for the swings to swing properly. That would be all right. Yeah?
0:15:20 > 0:15:24OK, boys, you can chop it down! Yes, nice! Right! Don't go back!
0:15:26 > 0:15:29Oh! Timber! Look at that!
0:15:29 > 0:15:30LAUGHTER
0:15:30 > 0:15:33Whoa. Perfect. Go on, then. Slide her in.
0:15:34 > 0:15:37Just! Just! Doesn't look too large, does it?
0:15:40 > 0:15:43Now the boys are cracking on with the play area, Charlie can get back
0:15:43 > 0:15:48to constructing a brand-new support for the beautiful wisteria.
0:15:48 > 0:15:52So the trellis is out. The ugly trellis.
0:15:52 > 0:15:55And now, I am going to put these poles in, like this,
0:15:55 > 0:15:57all the way round, on a curve,
0:15:57 > 0:15:59to pick up the curve
0:15:59 > 0:16:04of the water feature. And also cut them, so that they curve,
0:16:04 > 0:16:06so that it sort of ties everything together.
0:16:06 > 0:16:10At just ?60 for the stakes to create this feature,
0:16:10 > 0:16:15it is a budget option and gives a contemporary feel to the space.
0:16:15 > 0:16:18Charlie's design is really taking shape now.
0:16:19 > 0:16:20The pizza oven is in,
0:16:20 > 0:16:24the lion's share of the work on the water feature is done
0:16:24 > 0:16:27and the hazardous wall has been replaced by a much safer
0:16:27 > 0:16:30graduating slope.
0:16:30 > 0:16:32And then we are going to lie down...
0:16:32 > 0:16:36But the boys are lagging behind and need to get going on the tunnel.
0:16:36 > 0:16:39Lorna and Luciano really wanted that retaining wall removed
0:16:39 > 0:16:43and this gave Charlie the opportunity to give them a lovely sweeping lawn.
0:16:43 > 0:16:46This will great fun for the kids to run up and down,
0:16:46 > 0:16:49but left us with quite a lot of excess soil, turf and stone.
0:16:49 > 0:16:51With that, we are going to create this soil tunnel.
0:16:51 > 0:16:54What a feature. Oh. A little bigger, I think adults could get through it.
0:16:54 > 0:16:57That's the dream! I could probably squeeze in!
0:17:03 > 0:17:07As usual, rain is coming down, so it's important to wrap up
0:17:07 > 0:17:10and keep warm. Not if you're a man, you don't have to! You watch.
0:17:10 > 0:17:12He'll have a jumper on later!
0:17:12 > 0:17:15Just for you, I am NOT going to put my jumper on now!
0:17:17 > 0:17:20Well, what would a day in a British garden be without a spot of rain?
0:17:20 > 0:17:23And it looks like it's here for the afternoon.
0:17:25 > 0:17:27So there's nothing for it but for Charlie to box on
0:17:27 > 0:17:30with the planting around the water feature.
0:17:30 > 0:17:32Put that one there and that one there.
0:17:32 > 0:17:33That looks good to me.
0:17:33 > 0:17:36Can someone hold this one, while I have a look?
0:17:39 > 0:17:42In the design, she has created an elegant curve
0:17:42 > 0:17:44that will be dotted with tall, thin cypress trees.
0:17:47 > 0:17:48Yeah!
0:17:48 > 0:17:52I'm thinking of it like you are walking, you know, in Italy.
0:17:52 > 0:17:55You are walking up the hill and you've got the spires of greens.
0:17:55 > 0:17:58You get that to the patio.
0:17:58 > 0:17:59Yeah?
0:17:59 > 0:18:03No plant conjures up images of the Italian landscape better
0:18:03 > 0:18:06than the cypress tree and its elegant shape has been
0:18:06 > 0:18:11a mainstay of formal Italianate gardens for centuries.
0:18:15 > 0:18:19Possibly the most renowned Italianate formal garden in the UK
0:18:19 > 0:18:22is at Trentham Gardens in Staffordshire.
0:18:23 > 0:18:26The Italianate style of garden
0:18:26 > 0:18:30is very strongly represented by its use of symmetry,
0:18:30 > 0:18:33so we can literally draw lines across the garden
0:18:33 > 0:18:36and see the pattern reflected on either side of this.
0:18:37 > 0:18:41Like the trees Charlie has used in Lorna and Luciano's garden,
0:18:41 > 0:18:45at Trentham, tall, thin trees are an important element of the design.
0:18:46 > 0:18:49It's a very formal layout,
0:18:49 > 0:18:51using clipped evergreens to create the structure.
0:18:51 > 0:18:54This style isn't limited to large gardens.
0:18:56 > 0:18:59Some of the design principles used in Trentham
0:18:59 > 0:19:03can be applied to the average back garden.
0:19:03 > 0:19:06If you are looking to create this feel in your garden,
0:19:06 > 0:19:07but on a much smaller scale,
0:19:07 > 0:19:10one of the things I would look to do is to create
0:19:10 > 0:19:14a formal structural layout, using light-coloured materials.
0:19:14 > 0:19:17And it can be done relatively inexpensively,
0:19:17 > 0:19:21using fine-textured gravels.
0:19:21 > 0:19:24Look to try and use fine-textured foliages.
0:19:24 > 0:19:28The smaller the leaf, the more distant it will appear
0:19:28 > 0:19:29and the larger the space will be.
0:19:36 > 0:19:39Back in Bolton, the rain may be coming down,
0:19:39 > 0:19:42but it is not slowing the Rich brothers.
0:19:42 > 0:19:46We've got a bit of sand left over, so we are using it just to kind of
0:19:46 > 0:19:49create this nice smooth surface before we add the topsoil on.
0:19:49 > 0:19:51Also it helps, cos it knits together
0:19:51 > 0:19:53the large clods of soil underneath.
0:19:53 > 0:19:57So, altogether, it's going to help with drain and it is a good binder.
0:19:59 > 0:20:02Then, with a layer of topsoil added to the tunnel,
0:20:02 > 0:20:05the boys can get on with turfing.
0:20:05 > 0:20:09Meanwhile, a rather soggy Charlie is working hard to conjure up
0:20:09 > 0:20:12that southern European feel.
0:20:12 > 0:20:18I've gone for three key Italian - or should I say Mediterranean - plants.
0:20:18 > 0:20:20So I've got a bay tree, I've got two of those,
0:20:20 > 0:20:23so I'm probably going to put them in containers and sort of split
0:20:23 > 0:20:25them from one patio to another.
0:20:25 > 0:20:30We've got Italian cypress, which are really highlighting the swirl
0:20:30 > 0:20:34of the flower bed and add that tall height to the garden.
0:20:34 > 0:20:36And then I've got these wonderful olives.
0:20:40 > 0:20:44When planting Mediterranean plants like olives and cypress trees,
0:20:44 > 0:20:49it's good to remember that their native climate is drier than ours,
0:20:49 > 0:20:52so dig in lots of grit and drainage underneath the plant
0:20:52 > 0:20:54when you pop it in the ground.
0:20:54 > 0:20:58They don't like to sit in a puddle of water, but then who does?
0:20:59 > 0:21:02The boys have moved on to the planting, too.
0:21:02 > 0:21:05On their design for Lorna and Luciano's garden,
0:21:05 > 0:21:09they included a living willow tunnel in the play area.
0:21:09 > 0:21:13Charlie has decided to add something similar, made with hornbeam.
0:21:14 > 0:21:16Charlie's design is all about curves
0:21:16 > 0:21:19and that's been echoed through the hard landscaping.
0:21:19 > 0:21:22But what we want to do is to do this with soft landscaping,
0:21:22 > 0:21:24with these hornbeam trees.
0:21:24 > 0:21:26And they are very young and easy to manipulate,
0:21:26 > 0:21:28which means that we create this lovely archway,
0:21:28 > 0:21:30which is going to become this very natural sculpture.
0:21:30 > 0:21:34These area like hedging trees, so the more you trim them, the denser they get.
0:21:34 > 0:21:38They won't grow into big trees if you keep clipping them. They'll slowly thicken up
0:21:38 > 0:21:42and become this really dense tunnel, which is really cool. Yeah.
0:21:45 > 0:21:48By tying the young trees together at the top,
0:21:48 > 0:21:52the boys are training the plants to grow into an arch shape.
0:21:52 > 0:21:57And as the hornbeam grows, the structure will get stronger.
0:21:57 > 0:22:00What I'm doing here is I am just trimming off the inside branches,
0:22:00 > 0:22:03just to accentuate that kind of tunnel feeling.
0:22:03 > 0:22:05But I don't want to do it too much, I want to keep it quite natural
0:22:05 > 0:22:09and feeling, you know, that these things have just sprouted out.
0:22:09 > 0:22:12To add another sensory element to the children's play area,
0:22:12 > 0:22:15Charlie has sourced some tubular bells.
0:22:15 > 0:22:18Their deep tones will provide endless delight to Rocco and Bruno,
0:22:18 > 0:22:20and the neighbours, no doubt.
0:22:21 > 0:22:23I'll hand over the baton. You can...
0:22:23 > 0:22:26BELLS CHIME Oh!
0:22:26 > 0:22:27LAUGHTER
0:22:27 > 0:22:30It escaped from me! That's nice. Look at that.
0:22:30 > 0:22:31Shall we do a duet?
0:22:35 > 0:22:38I love them! Ooh! I want some. You just made that look easy.
0:22:38 > 0:22:40Have a go.
0:22:44 > 0:22:48To further enhance the sights, smells and sounds in this part
0:22:48 > 0:22:52of the garden, Charlie is adding sensory planting around the bells.
0:22:53 > 0:22:56I have got some...
0:22:56 > 0:22:59lovely phlomis. Feel that. I do like phlomis. So soft.
0:22:59 > 0:23:02A big yellow one, isn't it, this one? Yeah.
0:23:02 > 0:23:05We've got herbs for smell. Yeah, that does smell good. More herbs.
0:23:05 > 0:23:08So thyme and mint. Yep.
0:23:08 > 0:23:11Beautiful. And then, for bright colours, we've got the calendula.
0:23:11 > 0:23:12Ooh. You can eat the flowers.
0:23:12 > 0:23:15Serious? The petals. What does it taste of? Nothing. Oh!
0:23:15 > 0:23:18But it looks pretty. It's just the idea...
0:23:18 > 0:23:20And then, can you see those chives over there? Yep.
0:23:20 > 0:23:23Could you bring them over here? Cos I'd like those here as well. Oh!
0:23:23 > 0:23:25See? There you go.
0:23:25 > 0:23:29That'll teach you to come and talk to me and play with my bells.
0:23:33 > 0:23:35Harry is adding plants, too,
0:23:35 > 0:23:38but this time with a native British heritage.
0:23:38 > 0:23:40These primroses left to seed
0:23:40 > 0:23:42will create these lovely surprises around the garden.
0:23:42 > 0:23:45In time, they are going to drift over this mound
0:23:45 > 0:23:47and, you know, they'll dot about the garden.
0:23:47 > 0:23:49And I think that's what's so nice about using wild plants.
0:23:56 > 0:24:00With the main features built, the team are on the home straight.
0:24:00 > 0:24:03The newly created slope is now being turfed.
0:24:04 > 0:24:08Charlie is winding the Wisteria up the new partition,
0:24:08 > 0:24:11along with some more scented climbers.
0:24:11 > 0:24:13Look at that! A bit of instant gardening.
0:24:13 > 0:24:16It looks like it's been there for ever, doesn't it?
0:24:18 > 0:24:21And, to make the play area safe for the young boys,
0:24:21 > 0:24:25David's adding a thick layer of bark chippings.
0:24:26 > 0:24:30As the final pot of herbs is placed next to the pizza oven,
0:24:30 > 0:24:34this family garden is complete and ready for its grand unveiling.
0:24:38 > 0:24:42In its previous guise, Lorna and Luciano's garden was full of
0:24:42 > 0:24:45level changes, trip hazards and sharp edges.
0:24:45 > 0:24:49Not exactly a suitable playground for two young children.
0:24:52 > 0:24:55Now it's had a ?6,500 makeover.
0:24:55 > 0:24:59And Charlie and the team have spent every penny
0:24:59 > 0:25:02to try and make this garden work for all the family.
0:25:03 > 0:25:06She spent ?1,300 on play equipment
0:25:06 > 0:25:10and tubular bells to keep Rocco and Bruno occupied.
0:25:13 > 0:25:16The grass tunnel in the play area fits brilliantly
0:25:16 > 0:25:18with Charlie's curvaceous design
0:25:18 > 0:25:21and was a steal at ?100.
0:25:24 > 0:25:28The pizza oven was an indulgence at over ?2,000,
0:25:28 > 0:25:30but it's the one thing Luciano wanted.
0:25:33 > 0:25:37The plants really give this garden its Italian feel.
0:25:37 > 0:25:41Charlie spent a whopping ?1,200 on them, but the impact is huge.
0:25:45 > 0:25:48And last but not least, the bespoke water feature adds
0:25:48 > 0:25:53a touch of luxury, with a ?900 price tag to match.
0:25:53 > 0:25:56But it provides a focal point and a talking point in the garden.
0:26:01 > 0:26:04Lorna and Luciano were prepared to spend big
0:26:04 > 0:26:08to get the stylish child-friendly garden they wanted.
0:26:08 > 0:26:12OK. Don't open them until I say. Rocco, don't cheat.
0:26:12 > 0:26:14Oh, here they come. One, two, three.
0:26:14 > 0:26:16Open your eyes.
0:26:16 > 0:26:18Whoa! E bellissimo!
0:26:18 > 0:26:21Yes? Bellissimo, I think it's... Oh, my God! Yeah? Yeah.
0:26:21 > 0:26:24Shall we go down? Do you want to go down, then?
0:26:24 > 0:26:26Shall we go and have a look?
0:26:26 > 0:26:27THEY LAUGH
0:26:27 > 0:26:30God, he's gone straight on the mound.
0:26:30 > 0:26:31LAUGHTER
0:26:31 > 0:26:34Well, it looks like he's really enjoying himself, anyway. Yeah.
0:26:34 > 0:26:36So this is all going to be scented,
0:26:36 > 0:26:38so you've got your wisteria that is scented.
0:26:38 > 0:26:41We have jasmine and we've got a climbing white rose.
0:26:41 > 0:26:44Very romantic, with a really, really sweet scent.
0:26:44 > 0:26:45Oh, that's beautiful.
0:26:45 > 0:26:46And then you've got your...
0:26:46 > 0:26:48olive trees. Olive trees. Wow!
0:26:48 > 0:26:50They are amazing, aren't they?
0:26:50 > 0:26:53And we've put... Oh, look at the pizza oven!
0:26:53 > 0:26:54LAUGHTER
0:26:54 > 0:26:57I think that's going to get great use. It definitely will.
0:26:57 > 0:27:00You can see how that area has been transformed now.
0:27:00 > 0:27:02The wisteria looks beautiful as well. Gorgeous.
0:27:02 > 0:27:04Come and hit the pipes.
0:27:06 > 0:27:08LAUGHTER What about the other ones?
0:27:08 > 0:27:10What about these ones?
0:27:10 > 0:27:12They're making funny sounds, aren't they?
0:27:12 > 0:27:14I'm actually really surprised
0:27:14 > 0:27:16at how much of a dramatic change has happened today.
0:27:20 > 0:27:22I was really pleased when this wall came out,
0:27:22 > 0:27:26because it seems to have made this patio so much bigger. I know.
0:27:26 > 0:27:29And so much safer. So much safer for the kids.
0:27:29 > 0:27:31They can just run up that and that is their bit.
0:27:31 > 0:27:33No, it's absolutely amazing.
0:27:37 > 0:27:41?6,500 was a serious investment in their outdoor space.
0:27:41 > 0:27:45Do Lorna and Luciano think it was money well spent?
0:27:47 > 0:27:49Oh, I love the water. I love the water.
0:27:49 > 0:27:52The water feature is absolutely stunning. Really, really love that.
0:27:52 > 0:27:53I love the olive trees and the...
0:27:53 > 0:27:56And the tubular bells. Did you see the kids playing on those?
0:27:56 > 0:27:59I think we're going to spend time ourselves there to play with. I know.
0:27:59 > 0:28:01DAVID: Obviously, there has been a good budget, but it shows that
0:28:01 > 0:28:05if you are on a low budget, simple things like taking away a wall
0:28:05 > 0:28:08and sculpting some land, or bringing in a bit of drainage pipe... Yeah!
0:28:08 > 0:28:09..lobbing some soil over it,
0:28:09 > 0:28:12you can actually make big differences to a garden. Yeah.
0:28:12 > 0:28:13I think you're really smug.
0:28:13 > 0:28:16I don't think I've seen you this smug for a long time.
0:28:16 > 0:28:19Only when you get us to dig a big hole are you that smug!
0:28:21 > 0:28:24LORNA: Before, it wasn't a family garden. Now you can really see it's ours.
0:28:24 > 0:28:27It's got things in there for the kids and a bit of Italy,
0:28:27 > 0:28:30with the olive trees and pizza oven - it definitely says "us".
0:28:30 > 0:28:32It's amazing. I'm really, really pleased.
