0:00:03 > 0:00:05With her can-do attitude, love of simple gardens
0:00:05 > 0:00:07and decades of experience... Hello.
0:00:07 > 0:00:11..Charlie Dimmock is one of Britain's best loved gardeners.
0:00:11 > 0:00:13Looking good, boys.
0:00:13 > 0:00:17But the new kids on the gardening block are the Rich brothers.
0:00:17 > 0:00:20We will be the brothers that change people's perceptions of gardens.
0:00:20 > 0:00:23Winners of multiple medals at the Chelsea Flower Show...
0:00:23 > 0:00:27Amazing. ..the boys have become known for
0:00:27 > 0:00:29their dramatic outdoor spaces.
0:00:31 > 0:00:35Now, these two different generations of gardening are going head-to-head.
0:00:35 > 0:00:39I know they have got a gold medal, but I can come up with a few ideas.
0:00:39 > 0:00:43They are meeting frustrated garden owners across the country.
0:00:43 > 0:00:46The photos made it look tiny.
0:00:46 > 0:00:48It is, isn't it? I'm sure you've seen larger.
0:00:48 > 0:00:51I don't know what to do with it. And will each pitch them
0:00:51 > 0:00:54a design based on their needs... Wow! ..and budget.
0:00:54 > 0:00:55That looks really exciting.
0:00:55 > 0:00:57It doesn't look like it could be our garden.
0:00:57 > 0:01:00The winner...
0:01:00 > 0:01:01Whoo!
0:01:01 > 0:01:03..brings their design to life...
0:01:03 > 0:01:04Hold on, hold on.
0:01:04 > 0:01:08Sweet as a nut. ..and the loser has to help them build it.
0:01:08 > 0:01:11I'm getting irritated now, faffing around.
0:01:11 > 0:01:13This is what happens...
0:01:13 > 0:01:14Does he ever get irritating?
0:01:14 > 0:01:17All the time. ..when different styles collide...
0:01:17 > 0:01:19Who chose these? One, two, three.
0:01:20 > 0:01:22This looks like your design.
0:01:22 > 0:01:23Yes!
0:01:23 > 0:01:26..to turn garden dreams into reality.
0:01:26 > 0:01:27Wow! Wow!
0:01:27 > 0:01:29Open your eyes.
0:01:29 > 0:01:30Wow!
0:01:30 > 0:01:33It's amazing. It is beautiful.
0:01:40 > 0:01:42So, whose garden will Charlie
0:01:42 > 0:01:46and the Rich brothers be competing for this time?
0:01:46 > 0:01:48So, it looks like we are off to Wiltshire to see Usha.
0:01:48 > 0:01:52It looks really rural, I have to say, looks lovely.
0:01:52 > 0:01:54Usha Gupta swapped living in Maidenhead
0:01:54 > 0:01:58for a more peaceful countryside location ten years ago,
0:01:58 > 0:02:01settling in the market town of Marlborough in Wiltshire.
0:02:03 > 0:02:05I'm a country girl, I do like my space,
0:02:05 > 0:02:07and hence the reason I have moved here.
0:02:07 > 0:02:09I just felt claustrophobic in the city.
0:02:09 > 0:02:12I love it here. I love the wide-open spaces.
0:02:12 > 0:02:14This is a detached bungalow.
0:02:14 > 0:02:17It has got a nice little garden, not too big.
0:02:18 > 0:02:20Usha loves the outdoors,
0:02:20 > 0:02:22but doesn't spend time in her own garden
0:02:22 > 0:02:25because it is an uninspiring, wide and shallow plot. Since
0:02:25 > 0:02:27last year I have been thinking about doing
0:02:27 > 0:02:29the garden, and I had loads of ideas,
0:02:29 > 0:02:32but I couldn't work out how I was going to implement them.
0:02:32 > 0:02:35I mean, has she given any influence about what she wants?
0:02:35 > 0:02:39Yes, so she is mad on wildlife and bringing wildlife into the garden
0:02:39 > 0:02:41and reconnecting with nature.
0:02:41 > 0:02:45I would love to see birds, butterflies, bees, etc.
0:02:45 > 0:02:47I also love taking a lot of photographs.
0:02:47 > 0:02:52Having trained as a microbiologist, Usha loves to see nature close up,
0:02:52 > 0:02:54and her great passion is photography.
0:02:54 > 0:02:56It is pretty cool design-wise,
0:02:56 > 0:02:59because this is her hobby and she's going to get so much more from
0:02:59 > 0:03:02the garden. It will be great, it's more about the details, isn't it?
0:03:02 > 0:03:04What you can see through the lens. Exactly.
0:03:04 > 0:03:08But Usha also wants her garden to be productive.
0:03:08 > 0:03:09Since she moved to Marlborough,
0:03:09 > 0:03:13she has made a concerted effort to grow her own fruit and veg.
0:03:14 > 0:03:20Growing my own is so very important because you just cannot get
0:03:20 > 0:03:23that taste, the flavour, as pick your own.
0:03:23 > 0:03:26Sometimes the food doesn't even come inside.
0:03:26 > 0:03:29If I do peas, I'm just eating them while I'm out there.
0:03:29 > 0:03:31We definitely need to unite the garden
0:03:31 > 0:03:35in a wildlife theme, vegetables, quite wholesome.
0:03:35 > 0:03:38Usha is eager to transform her garden into a wildlife haven
0:03:38 > 0:03:43and this is reflected in how much she is prepared to spend.
0:03:43 > 0:03:48The budget for the garden redesign is ?6,000.
0:03:48 > 0:03:52That's not bad, is it, for a small garden? Really nice.
0:03:52 > 0:03:56A healthy budget and a manageable-sized plot,
0:03:56 > 0:04:00it's a great chance for the designers to produce something special,
0:04:00 > 0:04:04but Usha has a keen eye for detail and will notice any imperfections.
0:04:09 > 0:04:12Now they have the measure of the challenge they face,
0:04:12 > 0:04:16Charlie and the boys are going head-to-head to create a design
0:04:16 > 0:04:21for Usha's dream garden that stays within her ?6,000 budget.
0:04:31 > 0:04:35It's the day of the pitch and the designers head to Wiltshire to
0:04:35 > 0:04:37present their plans to her in person.
0:04:39 > 0:04:41Usha will then choose the winner,
0:04:41 > 0:04:46and the loser will help the victor build the garden.
0:04:46 > 0:04:48But who will she go for?
0:04:49 > 0:04:50Will it be Charlie,
0:04:50 > 0:04:55with her years of experience and vast knowledge of plants? Here we go.
0:04:55 > 0:04:57Hi! Or the Rich brothers,
0:04:57 > 0:05:01known for their medal-winning contemporary designs? Oh, wow!
0:05:01 > 0:05:03Now, I've gone with a terracotta feel.
0:05:03 > 0:05:05OK. This is going to be such a sunny garden,
0:05:05 > 0:05:09I think that would be lovely and warm and feel soft.
0:05:09 > 0:05:13Brilliant. The main run is a diagonal patio
0:05:13 > 0:05:16across to the vegetable area.
0:05:17 > 0:05:20Charlie is using a warm, earthy scheme,
0:05:20 > 0:05:23dominated by a large terrace.
0:05:23 > 0:05:28But the boys are trying something a little bit different.
0:05:28 > 0:05:29We wanted to create a space that you
0:05:29 > 0:05:32could immerse yourself in and be very soft and natural,
0:05:32 > 0:05:35but also that replicates your love and passion for macrophotography.
0:05:35 > 0:05:37Brilliant. So the really exciting
0:05:37 > 0:05:39thing about this design is the detail.
0:05:39 > 0:05:41What we have focused on is the pattern and
0:05:41 > 0:05:43the structure of a dragonfly wing.
0:05:43 > 0:05:46As you can see here, it is very angular,
0:05:46 > 0:05:49but also very soft around the edges. Yes.
0:05:49 > 0:05:52Charlie hasn't forgotten Usha's hobby either,
0:05:52 > 0:05:55and has chosen plants that look amazing in close-up.
0:05:55 > 0:05:57We have a lot of alpines,
0:05:57 > 0:06:01because I thought they'll be great for your macrophotography
0:06:01 > 0:06:04because they have really good textures.
0:06:04 > 0:06:08The foliage is lovely, and the flowers are very intricate.
0:06:08 > 0:06:13The next challenge was to transform Usha's tired old veg plot
0:06:13 > 0:06:15into something more inspiring.
0:06:15 > 0:06:17The vegetable patch. OK.
0:06:17 > 0:06:24Raised borders, with a central bed there that is not raised.
0:06:24 > 0:06:27What we have done is to raise the vegetable beds out of the ground and
0:06:27 > 0:06:29out of the pattern. You'll never have seen these.
0:06:29 > 0:06:32They are quite irregular shaped veg beds and, because they're such
0:06:32 > 0:06:35an irregular shape, it would be nice to make them out of steel,
0:06:35 > 0:06:37and that adds quite a lot of texture as well,
0:06:37 > 0:06:39and it is a beautiful backdrop for plants.
0:06:39 > 0:06:41The designs may be very different,
0:06:41 > 0:06:45but both designers have included the essential feature
0:06:45 > 0:06:46in any wildlife garden.
0:06:46 > 0:06:48The pond has got moving water.
0:06:48 > 0:06:51Brilliant. Keeping the terracotta theme going,
0:06:51 > 0:06:55I have gone with the Ali Baba pot.
0:06:55 > 0:06:58Tipped on its side, so it would be a gentle sound,
0:06:58 > 0:07:03not a gushing sound that will make you want to visit the bathroom.
0:07:03 > 0:07:06Quite a large wildlife pond for you.
0:07:06 > 0:07:09OK. That is a great way to encourage wildlife there
0:07:09 > 0:07:11and great for the photography.
0:07:11 > 0:07:14It is surrounded by wildflower meadows.
0:07:14 > 0:07:17This is actually designed around leaf veins,
0:07:17 > 0:07:20so you have got these lovely veins here,
0:07:20 > 0:07:22and it also allows you to travel around the garden,
0:07:22 > 0:07:25so you have got this lovely journey.
0:07:25 > 0:07:28Charlie and the brothers have taken totally different approaches
0:07:28 > 0:07:30with their designs.
0:07:30 > 0:07:36It's now up to Usha to decide which one she wants for her ?6,000.
0:07:39 > 0:07:42Only one design can win.
0:07:42 > 0:07:45So, will it be the Rich brothers with their new patio inspired by
0:07:45 > 0:07:46a dragonfly wing?
0:07:50 > 0:07:53Or will it be Charlie, with her warm terracotta landscaping,
0:07:53 > 0:07:57selection of alpine plants, and an Ali Baba pot?
0:08:01 > 0:08:02It's decision time.
0:08:06 > 0:08:07Hello, guys.
0:08:07 > 0:08:11ALL: Hello. I've decided to go for...
0:08:13 > 0:08:14I'm so sorry, Charlie.
0:08:14 > 0:08:17There you go. Awesome news, thank you very much.
0:08:17 > 0:08:19I'm excited about this. We've got every faith.
0:08:19 > 0:08:22Don't worry. It will look amazing. It looks like a lot of hard work.
0:08:22 > 0:08:24Yes, of course.
0:08:24 > 0:08:25Hard work for you!
0:08:25 > 0:08:26LAUGHTER
0:08:26 > 0:08:28The boys are thrilled.
0:08:28 > 0:08:32But there will be a lot of work to do to make their design a reality.
0:08:32 > 0:08:36And they will need to keep Charlie on side to pull it off.
0:08:41 > 0:08:43It's a drizzly day in Wiltshire and,
0:08:43 > 0:08:47while the Rich brothers are off-site working on the finer details
0:08:47 > 0:08:51of their design, work is underway to remove that monster conifer
0:08:51 > 0:08:53currently dominating Usha's garden.
0:09:02 > 0:09:04One of the most complicated parts of
0:09:04 > 0:09:07the boys' design is the vegetable garden within the new patio.
0:09:11 > 0:09:15So the landscaping team are clearing that area ready for its construction.
0:09:28 > 0:09:31Meanwhile, professional welder Edward
0:09:31 > 0:09:34sets to work building the raised steel veg beds and,
0:09:34 > 0:09:37once the first one is constructed, it's manoeuvred into place.
0:09:40 > 0:09:42The design is now at a crucial stage,
0:09:42 > 0:09:46so the Rich brothers and Charlie have arrived to take control.
0:09:46 > 0:09:48This garden is all about wildlife.
0:09:48 > 0:09:51Not only will we achieve that through the planting and trees,
0:09:51 > 0:09:54but also through the details of the garden,
0:09:54 > 0:09:57so the dragonfly wing and the leaf veins in the meadow.
0:09:57 > 0:09:58So what am I doing, then?
0:09:58 > 0:10:01You're definitely going to do part of the wildlife pond,
0:10:01 > 0:10:04definitely involved in the planting and then, me and Harry are going
0:10:04 > 0:10:06to focus mainly on the hard landscaping.
0:10:06 > 0:10:09Let's go and do this, then. Before it's midnight!
0:10:10 > 0:10:15While Charlie goes into the back garden to investigate where the pond
0:10:15 > 0:10:19will be sited, Harry and David join the welder on those planters.
0:10:19 > 0:10:21The boys want to make sure they turn out right,
0:10:21 > 0:10:24plus they can't wait to get the welder's masks on.
0:10:29 > 0:10:32What's so nice about doing a raised bed,
0:10:32 > 0:10:34or an element in your garden completely bespoke,
0:10:34 > 0:10:36is that it's so unique to your own garden.
0:10:36 > 0:10:38You couldn't go and buy this off a shelf, could you? No.
0:10:38 > 0:10:40So it makes it that much more fun.
0:10:40 > 0:10:42Obviously, you need a professional to weld it,
0:10:42 > 0:10:45but you can do this with timber or in a different shape...
0:10:45 > 0:10:48Yeah. ..so you can have fun with it.
0:10:52 > 0:10:56In the back garden, Charlie's making a start on the pond.
0:10:58 > 0:11:01She's built dozens of them in her time,
0:11:01 > 0:11:03so the brothers have entrusted her
0:11:03 > 0:11:06with what will become a magnet for wildlife in the new garden.
0:11:09 > 0:11:11When it comes to positioning a pond,
0:11:11 > 0:11:14it is really key to get it in the right place,
0:11:14 > 0:11:17whether it is a wildlife pond or an ornamental pond.
0:11:17 > 0:11:21You really want to have at least six hours a day of full sun
0:11:21 > 0:11:25so that the plants grow and keep the pond clear.
0:11:25 > 0:11:30As this is a wildlife pond, we have positioned it close to the hedge.
0:11:30 > 0:11:33That way, the wildlife have got a safe corridor
0:11:33 > 0:11:37to get into the pond and out of the pond.
0:11:37 > 0:11:42Meanwhile, out front, the third and final vegetable planter has arrived.
0:11:42 > 0:11:45To save time, it's been made off-site.
0:11:45 > 0:11:48But it's no lightweight.
0:11:48 > 0:11:50One, two, three, lift.
0:11:50 > 0:11:52That's not too bad, actually.
0:11:52 > 0:11:55I thought it was going to be a lot worse.
0:11:55 > 0:11:57Fortunately, now the brothers are here,
0:11:57 > 0:12:01there's enough muscle on-site to move it...
0:12:02 > 0:12:04To where it should be.
0:12:05 > 0:12:07..and its little brother.
0:12:10 > 0:12:13Getting them in might have been easier than expected,
0:12:13 > 0:12:16but now all three of them are together,
0:12:16 > 0:12:19it's time for the brothers to crack on with the next part of the plan -
0:12:19 > 0:12:22the floor they sit on.
0:12:22 > 0:12:25They need to decide on the exact layout of the patio.
0:12:28 > 0:12:31Dream. Well, I think we're going to get the spray can
0:12:31 > 0:12:33and just be artists on the floor. It'll be fun.
0:12:33 > 0:12:35Some spray cans and some beer.
0:12:37 > 0:12:39Carefully following the design,
0:12:39 > 0:12:43they start by marking out exactly where the shapes are going to go.
0:12:45 > 0:12:47The dragonfly pattern is coming together
0:12:47 > 0:12:51and it's caught the eye of a lesser-spotted Dimmock.
0:12:51 > 0:12:55Hello, on my dragonfly wings. Dragonfly!
0:12:55 > 0:12:57These are great, aren't they? They are cool, yeah.
0:12:57 > 0:13:00Really cool. Ever so light, then, were they?
0:13:00 > 0:13:02That one wasn't too bad.
0:13:02 > 0:13:04Bent knees.
0:13:04 > 0:13:06It is nice getting something solid, isn't it?
0:13:06 > 0:13:10A bit of structure in the garden. Very instant.
0:13:10 > 0:13:12Exactly, yeah. Come and have a look at the pond.
0:13:12 > 0:13:14It is not as level as you think, this garden.
0:13:14 > 0:13:16Is it not? I don't know how much.
0:13:16 > 0:13:18That looks good. That looks great.
0:13:18 > 0:13:20It's a great size as well, isn't it?
0:13:20 > 0:13:22It is just a lot of faff getting the levels.
0:13:26 > 0:13:29The pond is turning into quite a project,
0:13:29 > 0:13:32so Harry and David leave the under-gardener to it.
0:13:34 > 0:13:37Usha's garden was lacking any kind of seating area,
0:13:37 > 0:13:39so the brothers are creating a second patio by
0:13:39 > 0:13:42the doors at the back of the house.
0:13:45 > 0:13:48What I'm doing now is I'm levelling this space
0:13:48 > 0:13:50as we're working from the house out.
0:13:50 > 0:13:51Once we get that level then,
0:13:51 > 0:13:54we're going to connect all these wooden timbers together
0:13:54 > 0:13:58to create the shape and then it is a very easy thing of filling it in,
0:13:58 > 0:14:02pegging it and putting the final layer of the gravel on top.
0:14:07 > 0:14:11With the hardcore going down, this feature is in good shape.
0:14:12 > 0:14:16Which is more than we can say for the pond.
0:14:16 > 0:14:20So, to speed up progress, David's giving Charlie a hand.
0:14:21 > 0:14:25I hope you've got clean socks on. I've actually got holes in my socks.
0:14:25 > 0:14:29The rubber liner needs to be smoothed around the contours of the pond,
0:14:29 > 0:14:30so it's shoes off!
0:14:32 > 0:14:34That'll be the slopey bit.
0:14:35 > 0:14:39So then it's going to be a case of tidying.
0:14:39 > 0:14:41Trying to fold it? Fold it.
0:14:41 > 0:14:43Put it round. Now, people go,
0:14:43 > 0:14:46"Oh, a liner. It looks terrible like that with the folds,"
0:14:46 > 0:14:49but actually, for wildlife, it's ideal, because these
0:14:49 > 0:14:53make nice little nooks and crannies for frogs and insects.
0:14:53 > 0:14:56And is this more banked here?
0:14:56 > 0:14:58Yes, a bank that side and a bank this side.
0:14:58 > 0:15:02And that's for...? Easy access for the wildlife, so if a hedgehog comes
0:15:02 > 0:15:06and drinks or a frog jumps in and out, they can get in and out easily.
0:15:06 > 0:15:09OK. So you always want that on a wildlife pond.
0:15:09 > 0:15:11As well as helping the wildlife,
0:15:11 > 0:15:16keeping the liner snug but not tight stops it tearing.
0:15:16 > 0:15:19I've got the hose. You've got the hose?
0:15:19 > 0:15:22Right. Shall I get the hose on? Yeah, but not while we're in it.
0:15:24 > 0:15:27Ready? Yep. On you go, then.
0:15:31 > 0:15:32Right.
0:15:32 > 0:15:36So we should take a sweepstake on how long this takes to fill
0:15:36 > 0:15:39because I reckon... An hour. An hour? No.
0:15:39 > 0:15:42I reckon there's about two cubic metres of water there.
0:15:42 > 0:15:44250 gallons. HE SNORES
0:15:44 > 0:15:45Oh, shut up.
0:15:45 > 0:15:50So I reckon it's definitely going to take two hours, even more, to fill.
0:15:50 > 0:15:54But we don't want to cut the liner till its full. Wisdom.
0:16:00 > 0:16:04Meanwhile, the complicated patio design is progressing.
0:16:05 > 0:16:09To create the dragonfly wing effect, the landscapers are making
0:16:09 > 0:16:13a matrix from wooden batons that are an inch deep.
0:16:13 > 0:16:16This will then be filled with compacted gravel.
0:16:19 > 0:16:21The Rich brothers' idea was inspired
0:16:21 > 0:16:23by Usha's love of wildlife photography.
0:16:25 > 0:16:27They're hoping that her new garden will become
0:16:27 > 0:16:31a bountiful location for observing nature on her doorstep.
0:16:36 > 0:16:41Fellow wildlife enthusiast Kate McRae has taken her pastime to the extreme
0:16:41 > 0:16:45by rigging cameras all around her garden.
0:16:45 > 0:16:48I've always been interested in wildlife from when I was a child
0:16:48 > 0:16:50and even though I grew up in south-east London,
0:16:50 > 0:16:52we always had a bird table
0:16:52 > 0:16:54and I think that's where my obsession started.
0:16:56 > 0:17:01I want to watch wildlife so creating areas that are easily viewable from
0:17:01 > 0:17:05the house or using cameras.
0:17:08 > 0:17:10I started with just one nest box camera kit
0:17:10 > 0:17:13probably about eight years ago
0:17:13 > 0:17:19and I've now got 20 cameras in and around the garden on feeders,
0:17:19 > 0:17:24nest boxes, fox feeding stations, hedgehog feeding station.
0:17:25 > 0:17:27Using amazing technology that now
0:17:27 > 0:17:30lets me watch my blue tits, great tits,
0:17:30 > 0:17:36jackdaws and their little families right inside my sitting room
0:17:36 > 0:17:39or my office, so I can sit and watch this, which is fantastic.
0:17:42 > 0:17:43The more you attract wildlife into
0:17:43 > 0:17:45your garden and the more you watch it,
0:17:45 > 0:17:48the more engaged you'll be and the more questions
0:17:48 > 0:17:49that will be forming in your mind.
0:17:49 > 0:17:52Why are the birds doing that? What can I do to attract more?
0:17:52 > 0:17:55It will become very addictive.
0:17:57 > 0:18:02With some 16 million gardens in the UK,
0:18:02 > 0:18:06they represent an area that's bigger than all our nature reserves
0:18:06 > 0:18:09put together, so they're a huge resource for wildlife.
0:18:13 > 0:18:16Back in Marlborough, on the main patio,
0:18:16 > 0:18:20the patchwork quilt of wooden batons is still not complete.
0:18:21 > 0:18:24But the patio by the back door is ready to be filled.
0:18:26 > 0:18:28Being quite an irregular shape,
0:18:28 > 0:18:30this would've been very tricky to do with slabbing
0:18:30 > 0:18:32and there would be a lot of cuts. So, again, using something
0:18:32 > 0:18:35like this is inexpensive and it's a really easy way
0:18:35 > 0:18:38of creating these lovely shapes.
0:18:38 > 0:18:42Because this knits down really tightly, almost like concrete,
0:18:42 > 0:18:45it doesn't let water permeate through,
0:18:45 > 0:18:48so what we've done is we've given a fall towards the lawn, and therefore
0:18:48 > 0:18:51any water will run off and soak into the beds.
0:18:54 > 0:18:56Once the gravel is just above the level of the frame,
0:18:56 > 0:19:00the Wacker plate irons out any lumps and bumps.
0:19:04 > 0:19:07The boys are now keen to move onto the main part of the garden.
0:19:09 > 0:19:12In their design, the pattern on the new patio
0:19:12 > 0:19:13is reflected in a series of beds.
0:19:15 > 0:19:18This part of the design was all based around the veins of a leaf.
0:19:18 > 0:19:20I'll walk you round it now.
0:19:20 > 0:19:24The paths here are the veins of a leaf,
0:19:24 > 0:19:26and then these pockets are just to define that on the outside,
0:19:26 > 0:19:30so Usha's going to get this really lovely journey as she walks through.
0:19:30 > 0:19:34The boys have elected to make some of the beds wild flower turf.
0:19:34 > 0:19:36It'll bring the wildlife flocking in.
0:19:39 > 0:19:42And there's enough of it to plant around the pond too,
0:19:42 > 0:19:45which is finally full and ready for Charlie to plant.
0:19:47 > 0:19:51When it comes to pond plants, there's three key groups.
0:19:51 > 0:19:53You've got oxygenators,
0:19:53 > 0:19:56which help keep the water fresh and non-stagnant.
0:19:56 > 0:20:00They don't need soil, they just need a bit of gravel,
0:20:00 > 0:20:02so they go right down to the deep bit,
0:20:02 > 0:20:05and it will just be part of the hiding places
0:20:05 > 0:20:07for all the insects.
0:20:07 > 0:20:10Oxygenators absorb excess nutrients in the water,
0:20:10 > 0:20:13keeping it clean and algae-free.
0:20:13 > 0:20:15You also have plants that lay on the surface,
0:20:15 > 0:20:19things like water lilies, water hawthorn, pond fringe,
0:20:19 > 0:20:23and then you have marginal plants which stand in the shallow areas.
0:20:23 > 0:20:26When you buy your marginal plants, quite often, the label says,
0:20:26 > 0:20:29"For four inches of water."
0:20:29 > 0:20:33What they mean is four inches from above the container top,
0:20:33 > 0:20:35so they go in quite deep.
0:20:35 > 0:20:38These ones are going to go on the shelf,
0:20:38 > 0:20:42and they are ideal to let all the dragonfly nymphs crawl out and then
0:20:42 > 0:20:47break open and turn into beautiful dragonflies.
0:20:47 > 0:20:49Charlie has created a shelf below the surface
0:20:49 > 0:20:51for the marginals to sit on.
0:20:52 > 0:20:57Water forget-me-nots and ornamental miniature bulrushes
0:20:57 > 0:21:00will help give a nice finish to the edge of the pond.
0:21:00 > 0:21:02The team are making progress,
0:21:02 > 0:21:05but we have still got a long way to go
0:21:05 > 0:21:09before the garden becomes the wildlife haven Usha is hoping for.
0:21:09 > 0:21:12At least the framework on the patio is done,
0:21:12 > 0:21:14so the boys can now add gravel crumb
0:21:14 > 0:21:17to give it a natural honeycomb finish,
0:21:17 > 0:21:19leaving Harry and David to focus on
0:21:19 > 0:21:23the three main flower beds in the centre of the garden.
0:21:23 > 0:21:26Usha is mad keen on microphotography,
0:21:26 > 0:21:29so the boys have chosen plants that will look stunning in close-up
0:21:29 > 0:21:32and attract a variety of wildlife.
0:21:33 > 0:21:37Including foxgloves and ornamental thistle that bees love.
0:21:39 > 0:21:42And moths and butterflies adore verbascums.
0:21:44 > 0:21:48But the peace and quiet is about to be rudely interrupted.
0:21:53 > 0:21:55The brothers have asked Mark the tree surgeon
0:21:55 > 0:21:59to recycle the stump of the large conifer into a new feature.
0:21:59 > 0:22:01Timber!
0:22:01 > 0:22:03Woo!
0:22:05 > 0:22:08It's now a second seating area,
0:22:08 > 0:22:11perfect for Usha to relax and observe her new oasis.
0:22:13 > 0:22:16But while the boys enjoy themselves,
0:22:16 > 0:22:19Charlie doesn't miss a trick, and has swiped the leftover wood.
0:22:21 > 0:22:25Next to her pond, she's building another woody wildlife habitat
0:22:25 > 0:22:28for creepy crawlies like woodlice and stag beetles.
0:22:30 > 0:22:34So we've got the craggy bark of the tree, but then I've got
0:22:34 > 0:22:37the brushwood from the tree that I've tied into a bundle,
0:22:37 > 0:22:41a bit like a witch's broom, and I'm going to pop that here
0:22:41 > 0:22:45because that will give a really lovely insulated area in the winter.
0:22:45 > 0:22:48I'm going to cover that with soil and then I'm going to put some
0:22:48 > 0:22:50meadow turf over the top of that.
0:22:52 > 0:22:54The Rich brothers haven't
0:22:54 > 0:22:55forgotten her other great passion -
0:22:55 > 0:22:58growing her own produce.
0:22:58 > 0:22:59In the old garden,
0:22:59 > 0:23:02Usha had made do with
0:23:02 > 0:23:04some crumbling wooden raised beds.
0:23:04 > 0:23:08Now there's ample room for a variety of edible delights
0:23:08 > 0:23:11in her new steel planters.
0:23:11 > 0:23:16And Charlie, who loves her vegetable gardens, can't wait to get involved.
0:23:16 > 0:23:18Last of the veggies, boys.
0:23:18 > 0:23:20Nice. Nice. Nice combination.
0:23:20 > 0:23:23Strawberries and garlic. Yeah, that's a new ice cream flavour.
0:23:23 > 0:23:26Mr Heston Blumenthal's next combination for dessert, is it?
0:23:26 > 0:23:29Now, actually, that's really good because when these come into flower,
0:23:29 > 0:23:33it attracts lots of hover flies that eat aphids and that side of things,
0:23:33 > 0:23:37and hover flies also pollinate, so a good combination.
0:23:37 > 0:23:39If you are only going to grow one, well,
0:23:39 > 0:23:42should I say fruit in the garden?
0:23:42 > 0:23:44Because a tomato is a fruit.
0:23:44 > 0:23:47Then go for tomatoes, because the flavour is just fantastic.
0:23:51 > 0:23:55These new raised veg beds are the icing on the cake
0:23:55 > 0:23:57for this multifaceted garden.
0:23:59 > 0:24:02And as the last tomato plants go in,
0:24:02 > 0:24:05the Rich brothers' design is complete.
0:24:08 > 0:24:13A few days ago, Usha's garden was an uninspiring rectangular lawn
0:24:13 > 0:24:15with a tired old veg bed
0:24:15 > 0:24:19and a large conifer tree that blocked out the sun.
0:24:19 > 0:24:23Now, it has had a ?6,000 transformation.
0:24:25 > 0:24:29The boys enlisted Charlie to build a pond to encourage wildlife.
0:24:29 > 0:24:32It took a lot of hard work and expertise to make it,
0:24:32 > 0:24:36but the materials were a bargain, coming in at just over ?150.
0:24:40 > 0:24:42To attract birds, bees and butterflies,
0:24:42 > 0:24:46the brothers laid meadow turf and planted flower beds filled
0:24:46 > 0:24:50with nectar-rich perennials, coming in at just over ?1,000.
0:24:56 > 0:25:01Usha was lacking any seating area in the garden,
0:25:01 > 0:25:05so the boys built a patio behind the French doors in a shape that
0:25:05 > 0:25:07ties in with the overall design.
0:25:12 > 0:25:16At no cost at all, the brothers upcycled the wood
0:25:16 > 0:25:19from the old conifer tree to make a second seatng area.
0:25:22 > 0:25:25It's important to Usha to grow her own
0:25:25 > 0:25:29and the three bespoke vegetable beds made from weathered steel bring
0:25:29 > 0:25:33an edgy, modern look to the space and are a luxury at ?3,000.
0:25:35 > 0:25:37Yes. Yeah.
0:25:37 > 0:25:43It's time to find out if Harry and David, for Usha's ?6,000 budget,
0:25:43 > 0:25:46have created the peaceful wildlife haven she was craving.
0:25:46 > 0:25:48Here she comes.
0:25:48 > 0:25:51Keep going, you're absolutely fine, there's nothing...
0:25:51 > 0:25:52Nothing to trip over!
0:25:52 > 0:25:53THEY LAUGH
0:25:53 > 0:25:57Lots, but I'm taking you the right way. Ha-ha!
0:25:57 > 0:26:00Right, come back a little bit... sit down.
0:26:00 > 0:26:02That's the one. HE LAUGHS
0:26:02 > 0:26:06Are you looking forward to seeing your garden? Very much so.
0:26:06 > 0:26:08One, two, three - open your eyes.
0:26:08 > 0:26:10Oh, my word!
0:26:10 > 0:26:13- Wow! - Well, the "Wow" says it.
0:26:13 > 0:26:16I could never have dreamt that it was possible
0:26:16 > 0:26:17to do something like this.
0:26:17 > 0:26:19Amazing. I love it. Thank you very much, guys.
0:26:19 > 0:26:22Do you want to have a little wander? Yes, please.
0:26:22 > 0:26:24We thought it'd be fun to put you on the seat. Yeah.
0:26:24 > 0:26:26So this is all the meadow turf, great for wildlife.
0:26:26 > 0:26:28Yeah, brilliant. Pond as well.
0:26:28 > 0:26:30Oh, yes. And there's my flowerbeds.
0:26:30 > 0:26:33Flowerbeds. Yes, we've got loads of plants in here
0:26:33 > 0:26:35that will give lots of flower throughout the year.
0:26:35 > 0:26:38We've got catmint as well, will give you a bit of scent as well,
0:26:38 > 0:26:41which will be nice. The bumblebees and butterflies are going to
0:26:41 > 0:26:45absolutely love these. These are the leaf veins, the paths round here.
0:26:45 > 0:26:48I see. It gives you the opportunity to wander through... Yeah!
0:26:48 > 0:26:52..walk around the beds. Espaliered apple tree over there.
0:26:52 > 0:26:55Oh, you put it on there? Gorgeous. My little patio.
0:26:55 > 0:26:57Yeah. Yeah.
0:26:57 > 0:27:01Lots of fiddle, but it was definitely worth it.
0:27:01 > 0:27:05This is the star, isn't it? The star of the show, yeah, indeed.
0:27:05 > 0:27:07What do you think of this? This is gorgeous.
0:27:07 > 0:27:10Doesn't that look beautiful? It has a nice feeling about it.
0:27:10 > 0:27:13It does, yeah. What have you got growing in my veg pots, then?
0:27:13 > 0:27:15Chillies, tomatoes.
0:27:15 > 0:27:16Fennel, sage.
0:27:16 > 0:27:19That's curry. Curry plant, yes.
0:27:19 > 0:27:22Oh, I thought it was Rosemary for a second. It looks like it.
0:27:22 > 0:27:25Then your strawberries and garlic. Oh, you put my strawberries back in!
0:27:25 > 0:27:29In the far one, we've got some beans. Oh, right, OK.
0:27:29 > 0:27:32Some runner beans and other herbs. Nice variety of herbs.
0:27:32 > 0:27:35Brilliant. Can you imagine spending time here taking photographs?
0:27:35 > 0:27:39Definitely, definitely. Your house will be full of photographs of the garden, won't it? Yeah.
0:27:39 > 0:27:41No, this is gorgeous. Thank you very much, guys.
0:27:41 > 0:27:44Pleasure, absolute pleasure. I'll come in for a hug as well.
0:27:44 > 0:27:46THEY LAUGH
0:27:49 > 0:27:54Usha wanted her garden to be filled with the sights and sounds of nature
0:27:54 > 0:27:57where she could spend time enjoying her favourite hobbies,
0:27:57 > 0:28:00taking photographs and growing produce.
0:28:00 > 0:28:01I love the vegetable patch.
0:28:01 > 0:28:04I do love the garden. It's totally unique and different,
0:28:04 > 0:28:07and that's what I like. I like to be different.
0:28:07 > 0:28:08CHARLIE: This looks fantastic.
0:28:08 > 0:28:12For a wildlife garden, the design has really worked.
0:28:12 > 0:28:15USHA: I can do my macrophotography to my heart's content now.
0:28:15 > 0:28:19The wildflowers will attract all the bees and wasps and butterflies
0:28:19 > 0:28:23and I've got the pond area for the newts and the frogs, etc.
0:28:23 > 0:28:26Yeah, it's amazing. I can get my own veggies as well.
0:28:26 > 0:28:28That is actually perfect for me.
