0:00:02 > 0:00:03With her can-do attitude,

0:00:03 > 0:00:07- love of simple gardens and decades of experience...- Hello!

0:00:07 > 0:00:10..Charlie Dimmock is one of Britain's best-loved gardeners.

0:00:10 > 0:00:12Looking good, boys.

0:00:12 > 0:00:15But the new kids on the gardening block are the Rich brothers.

0:00:15 > 0:00:17We want to be the brothers

0:00:17 > 0:00:19that change people's perceptions of gardeners.

0:00:19 > 0:00:22Winners of multiple medals at the Chelsea Flower Show...

0:00:22 > 0:00:24- Wow!- Get in.- It's amazing.

0:00:24 > 0:00:29..the boys have become known for their dramatic outdoor spaces.

0:00:29 > 0:00:34Now these two different generations of gardening are going head-to-head.

0:00:34 > 0:00:38I know they've got a gold medal, but I can come up with a few ideas.

0:00:38 > 0:00:42They're meeting frustrated garden owners across the country...

0:00:42 > 0:00:45The photos made it look tiny. It is, isn't it?

0:00:45 > 0:00:48- I'm sure you've seen larger. - I don't know what to do with it.

0:00:48 > 0:00:51..and will each pitch them a design based on their needs...

0:00:51 > 0:00:54- Wow!- ..and budget. - That looks really exciting.

0:00:54 > 0:00:56It doesn't look like it could be our garden.

0:00:56 > 0:00:58- The winner...- Hey!- Ta-da!

0:00:58 > 0:01:00- ALL:- Whoo!

0:01:00 > 0:01:02..brings their design to life.

0:01:02 > 0:01:04- Hold on, hold on!- Sweet as a nut.

0:01:04 > 0:01:07And the loser has to help them build it.

0:01:07 > 0:01:10I'm getting irritated now with faffing around.

0:01:10 > 0:01:11This is what happens...

0:01:11 > 0:01:14- Does he ever get irritating? - All the time.

0:01:14 > 0:01:16..when different styles collide...

0:01:16 > 0:01:18- Who chose these?- One, two, three.

0:01:19 > 0:01:22- This looks like your design.- Yeah.

0:01:22 > 0:01:25..to turn garden dreams into reality.

0:01:25 > 0:01:28- Wow!- Open your eyes.- Wow!

0:01:28 > 0:01:32- It's amazing.- It's beautiful.

0:01:38 > 0:01:41It's time for Charlie and the Rich brothers to discover

0:01:41 > 0:01:44whose garden they're fighting over this time.

0:01:44 > 0:01:46Andrea and Gary have sent these photos through.

0:01:46 > 0:01:49Gary was in the army for 15 years.

0:01:49 > 0:01:52For seven years, they moved about and moved to five different houses.

0:01:52 > 0:01:54- Oh, wow.- So, for the first time ever,

0:01:54 > 0:01:56they've got their own little plot.

0:01:59 > 0:02:04Andrea, her husband Gary and son Norman live in Devizes in Wiltshire

0:02:04 > 0:02:07where they bought their first home just over a year ago.

0:02:10 > 0:02:14With the army quarters, you couldn't change the decoration

0:02:14 > 0:02:17or do anything with the garden or do anything, really.

0:02:17 > 0:02:19It had to be all plain

0:02:19 > 0:02:21and how you found it is how you needed to leave it.

0:02:23 > 0:02:27And moving into our first very own home,

0:02:27 > 0:02:32I can't...I haven't got words to describe it, really.

0:02:32 > 0:02:36They must be really excited about actually having their own garden

0:02:36 > 0:02:37that they can do some gardening in.

0:02:37 > 0:02:39Yeah, I think they've waited a long time,

0:02:39 > 0:02:41as a family, to have their own space,

0:02:41 > 0:02:43and this is the right time and we're the right people,

0:02:43 > 0:02:45so we've got to create something special.

0:02:47 > 0:02:51Since moving in, they've been concentrating on doing up the house,

0:02:51 > 0:02:53but now it's the garden's turn.

0:02:55 > 0:02:57But it's a mess.

0:02:57 > 0:02:59Having a three-year-old and three dogs trampling on it

0:02:59 > 0:03:03has done nothing for the lawn, and aside from a broken shed,

0:03:03 > 0:03:05there isn't much to catch the eye.

0:03:07 > 0:03:09The garden space is all very plain,

0:03:09 > 0:03:12and we're not really doing anything with it, really.

0:03:12 > 0:03:15We're both lovers of outdoor and nature,

0:03:15 > 0:03:17and really, really important

0:03:17 > 0:03:19that we're trying to attract the wildlife,

0:03:19 > 0:03:21the birds and the bees and the butterflies,

0:03:21 > 0:03:25and bringing Norman up showing him, you know, how vegetables grow

0:03:25 > 0:03:29and how we plant seeds and what happens, the whole cycle.

0:03:29 > 0:03:33It's quite sterile, though. Hedge, shrub, lawn.

0:03:33 > 0:03:36Yeah, in essence, it is another blank canvas.

0:03:36 > 0:03:41With indoor renovation still to complete, Andrea and Gary only

0:03:41 > 0:03:45have a limited budget to create the new flower-filled haven they crave.

0:03:45 > 0:03:49The budget we've got is £1,500.

0:03:49 > 0:03:52- It's not a tiny garden, it's not a large garden, is it?- No.

0:03:52 > 0:03:55- This one's going to take all our creativity, isn't it? - I think so, yeah.

0:03:56 > 0:04:00With a new life ahead of them in a new home,

0:04:00 > 0:04:03all Andrea wants is a new garden to match.

0:04:03 > 0:04:06I've got you, I've got you!

0:04:06 > 0:04:08With the challenge on the table,

0:04:08 > 0:04:11Charlie and the Rich brothers will now go head-to-head for the chance

0:04:11 > 0:04:14to make over Andrea and Gary's garden.

0:04:14 > 0:04:16Each of them will come up with a design

0:04:16 > 0:04:21that will work within the family's £1,500 budget.

0:04:21 > 0:04:23Andrea will then have to choose a winner,

0:04:23 > 0:04:27and whoever loses will help the winner build the garden.

0:04:30 > 0:04:32It's the day of the pitch

0:04:32 > 0:04:34and the designers have travelled to Devizes

0:04:34 > 0:04:37to unveil their plans to Andrea.

0:04:37 > 0:04:38Charlie's a kindred spirit

0:04:38 > 0:04:41when it comes to wildlife-friendly gardens...

0:04:41 > 0:04:43Oh, wow! OK.

0:04:43 > 0:04:47..while the boys are known for their more contemporary designs.

0:04:47 > 0:04:49So, who will she go for?

0:04:49 > 0:04:52So, here is our design.

0:04:54 > 0:04:56So, we really wanted to stress

0:04:56 > 0:04:58on the point of what you guys do as a family together.

0:04:58 > 0:05:01So, we wanted to give you your own little patch of nature,

0:05:01 > 0:05:03- but in your back garden.- Yeah.

0:05:03 > 0:05:06One of the key elements within the design is something called

0:05:06 > 0:05:09Norman's Meadow Rooms. These are two rooms set within this meadow.

0:05:09 > 0:05:12It allows him to have two spaces, two different spaces to play.

0:05:12 > 0:05:15So, he can maybe set up a tent in there or something like that.

0:05:15 > 0:05:16Yeah, sounds good.

0:05:16 > 0:05:19I have gone down the route of dividing the garden,

0:05:19 > 0:05:24so along here is like a picket fence with double gates here.

0:05:24 > 0:05:27- Yeah.- So, if Norman's in here playing with his football,

0:05:27 > 0:05:31you can have the dogs on the patio

0:05:31 > 0:05:34- and they won't be whipping his football away.- Yeah.

0:05:34 > 0:05:37Your timbers that you've got, the pallets and that,

0:05:37 > 0:05:40I was going to use to make a potting bench

0:05:40 > 0:05:43because I can see that you're keen to learn about gardening...

0:05:43 > 0:05:47- Yeah, definitely.- ..and I'm sure Norman will love to be up there

0:05:47 > 0:05:49digging, planting some seeds.

0:05:51 > 0:05:56Both designers have kept family life at the centre of their designs.

0:05:56 > 0:05:59However, Charlie's hoping her year-round planting scheme

0:05:59 > 0:06:01will win Andrea over.

0:06:04 > 0:06:09Plant-wise, I've gone very pretty, cottagey around here,

0:06:09 > 0:06:13but incorporating some shrubs to reduce the maintenance,

0:06:13 > 0:06:16and those shrubs are going to give you colour

0:06:16 > 0:06:17at different times of the year.

0:06:17 > 0:06:19This meadow is knee-high,

0:06:19 > 0:06:22so all year round, you'll get this different kind of flood of flowers,

0:06:22 > 0:06:25which is going to look absolutely dramatic in the garden.

0:06:25 > 0:06:28Wanted to bring in some witch hazel, which have a winter flower on them,

0:06:28 > 0:06:30which will encourage the birds in.

0:06:30 > 0:06:33In the corner, we've put a nice ornamental cherry tree.

0:06:33 > 0:06:37- Yeah.- It'll really give that vibrancy to that space.

0:06:37 > 0:06:40Knowing the family are keen to grow their own veg,

0:06:40 > 0:06:43both designers have made room for edibles, too.

0:06:43 > 0:06:47- I have incorporated vegetables in the planting.- OK.

0:06:47 > 0:06:50And that can look really pretty cos you can edge borders

0:06:50 > 0:06:54with salad leaves, which cut and come again.

0:06:54 > 0:06:57Over here, these are two dwarf fruit trees.

0:06:57 > 0:07:00We've got two raised planters here. Very manageable.

0:07:00 > 0:07:03- A great start for you guys to grow.- Yeah.

0:07:03 > 0:07:06We've also left some room in case you want to put another one in,

0:07:06 > 0:07:09in case you start going mad on the vegetable front.

0:07:09 > 0:07:12Both the designers have, in very different ways,

0:07:12 > 0:07:14addressed Andrea's brief.

0:07:14 > 0:07:17But now the gloves are coming off, and in a bid to win,

0:07:17 > 0:07:19Charlie's going straight to the heart

0:07:19 > 0:07:22of Andrea's passion for wildlife.

0:07:22 > 0:07:25Bearing in mind you want to encourage lots of birds

0:07:25 > 0:07:27into the garden, interest,

0:07:27 > 0:07:32they love mixed hedges using natives and evergreens,

0:07:32 > 0:07:35so all the way round the gaps here,

0:07:35 > 0:07:39this is a mixed hedge using your pyracantha with beech,

0:07:39 > 0:07:44hazel and things like that which the birds love to nest in,

0:07:44 > 0:07:49and then I've got here a very wild, woodlandy bit.

0:07:49 > 0:07:52So, we've got a couple of trees that are going to get high enough

0:07:52 > 0:07:55- to hide the roofline.- Yeah.

0:07:55 > 0:07:58But they haven't got such dense shade

0:07:58 > 0:08:00that plants won't grow underneath.

0:08:00 > 0:08:05That's it. The pitch is over. It's now down to Andrea.

0:08:05 > 0:08:07Will she plump for the Rich brothers' design

0:08:07 > 0:08:11with its naturalistic meadow and outdoor playroom,

0:08:11 > 0:08:14or Charlie's design with its interlocking circles

0:08:14 > 0:08:16and cottage-garden borders?

0:08:19 > 0:08:21It's decision time.

0:08:21 > 0:08:23Here she comes.

0:08:24 > 0:08:29- Hello.- Hi. OK, so, I've chosen the winner.

0:08:29 > 0:08:34Loved both designs, but I could only pick one.

0:08:34 > 0:08:36And the one is...

0:08:38 > 0:08:43- Hey, nice! Well done.- I thought you were leaning the other way.

0:08:43 > 0:08:47I liked the fact that there was this wild bit here with the trees

0:08:47 > 0:08:50to attract the wildlife and the birds, which I really,

0:08:50 > 0:08:54really wanted, and it's something for Norman to get involved with.

0:08:54 > 0:08:58So, Charlie's wildlife planting clinched it,

0:08:58 > 0:09:01but she's really going to need the boys' help on this one.

0:09:01 > 0:09:04She's promised Andrea a child-friendly, dog-friendly,

0:09:04 > 0:09:08wildlife-friendly and edible garden,

0:09:08 > 0:09:12and has to deliver all of it for just £1,500.

0:09:16 > 0:09:20It's early morning in Devizes, and the hammers are out already.

0:09:22 > 0:09:25With only £1,500 to spend on this garden,

0:09:25 > 0:09:29Charlie's away coming up with some last-minute upcycling ideas

0:09:29 > 0:09:31to make Andrea's budget go further.

0:09:32 > 0:09:35In the meantime, she's sent the landscaping team

0:09:35 > 0:09:38to mark out the key features in the garden.

0:09:39 > 0:09:41To make room for the two inter-locking circles

0:09:41 > 0:09:45in Charlie's design, the team need to reposition the patio

0:09:45 > 0:09:48before taking up the turf round the circle's edges

0:09:48 > 0:09:50ready to line them with bricks.

0:09:54 > 0:09:57Meanwhile, Charlie and the Rich brothers have arrived

0:09:57 > 0:09:59and Charlie has a plan of attack.

0:09:59 > 0:10:02So, with this garden, we're definitely not going to

0:10:02 > 0:10:05the garden centre and not going to the builder's store to buy lots

0:10:05 > 0:10:08- and lots of stuff.- That's what I was going to be doing all day there,

0:10:08 > 0:10:11- just travelling back and forth. - The budget doesn't allow it.

0:10:11 > 0:10:15But, having said that, we should be able to achieve something

0:10:15 > 0:10:17really quite attractive

0:10:17 > 0:10:20with the money we have got and upcycling.

0:10:20 > 0:10:23- Bit more of a challenge.- Definitely.

0:10:23 > 0:10:26My concern is I want to leave lots and lots of space

0:10:26 > 0:10:28for Norman to play,

0:10:28 > 0:10:30but then I don't want it to look like a football pitch.

0:10:30 > 0:10:32I want it to look like a garden.

0:10:32 > 0:10:34- Yeah, just enough space to exhaust Norman.- Yeah!

0:10:34 > 0:10:37We just need to think about it and, you know, spend some time

0:10:37 > 0:10:39making sure we get it exactly right.

0:10:39 > 0:10:43I don't want it to look like Steptoe's yard, but...

0:10:43 > 0:10:47- I don't know what Steptoe's yard is. - Oh, you're so young.

0:10:47 > 0:10:50So young, they are.

0:10:50 > 0:10:53So, without further ado, Charlie sets the boys to work,

0:10:53 > 0:10:56creating the second of the interlocking circles.

0:10:59 > 0:11:01Charlie's used brick here and that works really nice and

0:11:01 > 0:11:03with the paving that's already here,

0:11:03 > 0:11:06but there are actually loads of different ways that you can do it.

0:11:06 > 0:11:07Yeah. You've got cobbles.

0:11:07 > 0:11:10- You could have rounded, more tumbled cobbles, couldn't you?- Yeah.

0:11:10 > 0:11:13Maybe some low hedging. Then, again, that's a very soft way of doing it.

0:11:13 > 0:11:16Give it a little bit of elevation.

0:11:18 > 0:11:21Whilst the circular structures start to take shape,

0:11:21 > 0:11:24Charlie's upcycling mission has begun.

0:11:27 > 0:11:30Upcycling's all the rage these days.

0:11:30 > 0:11:33It's basically just using bits and bobs you've got laying around

0:11:33 > 0:11:36that you use creatively to make something that's useful,

0:11:36 > 0:11:39so, environmentally, it's much better

0:11:39 > 0:11:41because you don't create landfill

0:11:41 > 0:11:43and you're reusing what you've got about.

0:11:43 > 0:11:47And when you've only got £1,500 to spend on a garden,

0:11:47 > 0:11:49anything free is a bonus.

0:11:51 > 0:11:55Knowing the family are keen to learn about gardening,

0:11:55 > 0:11:57Charlie wants them to start composting.

0:11:57 > 0:12:00A new composting bin can be costly,

0:12:00 > 0:12:04so Charlie's using some leftovers found at the back of the garden.

0:12:04 > 0:12:06So, I'm thinking...

0:12:06 > 0:12:10This slat...boards across...

0:12:10 > 0:12:12- Boards across the back... - OK.- ..like that.- Yeah.

0:12:12 > 0:12:16- And then what I'd like to do is have boards that slide in.- OK.

0:12:16 > 0:12:18We're going to have to face that as well.

0:12:18 > 0:12:20- Yeah.- Yeah?- Not a problem.

0:12:25 > 0:12:27Meanwhile, the turf has been lifted

0:12:27 > 0:12:29and it's time to cement in the brick edging.

0:12:31 > 0:12:35This is the mix of sand and cement we're using to lay the bricks onto.

0:12:35 > 0:12:37It's five to one, which means it's five sand to one cement,

0:12:37 > 0:12:40and that's your standard brick-laying mix.

0:12:40 > 0:12:42With this, as it's just a feature,

0:12:42 > 0:12:44it's not load-bearing and you're not walking on it,

0:12:44 > 0:12:46so there doesn't need to be a layer

0:12:46 > 0:12:48of hardcore beneath the cement and brick.

0:12:48 > 0:12:51We're going to brush in a dry mix of sand and cement,

0:12:51 > 0:12:53and that'll just help bind it a little bit,

0:12:53 > 0:12:56- and also neaten it up as a finish. - And it's really easy to do, as well.

0:12:56 > 0:12:58You're not having to point it with a wet mix.

0:12:58 > 0:13:00- Make life easy when you can. - Yeah, definitely.

0:13:03 > 0:13:05- Two more?- Yes.

0:13:05 > 0:13:06In the recycling centre,

0:13:06 > 0:13:09the home-made compost bin is coming along.

0:13:09 > 0:13:14Charlie and landscaper Adam are putting in sliding panels,

0:13:14 > 0:13:17so it'll be easy for the family to access.

0:13:17 > 0:13:19- Oh, look at that!- That's not bad.

0:13:21 > 0:13:25Charlie may be using the leftovers from Andrea's old garden

0:13:25 > 0:13:28to make the most of the limited budget,

0:13:28 > 0:13:31but some gardeners consider upcycling

0:13:31 > 0:13:33to be a style all of its own.

0:13:34 > 0:13:39Garden designer Jeni Cairns loves reinventing old items.

0:13:41 > 0:13:45She uses recycled and repurposed objects

0:13:45 > 0:13:48as the cornerstone of many of her garden designs.

0:13:50 > 0:13:54I grew up on a farm and my dad would never throw anything away,

0:13:54 > 0:13:56and my grandma and my grandad.

0:13:56 > 0:13:57I think it's sort of come down the line.

0:13:59 > 0:14:02One of the things that I've made is a water feature

0:14:02 > 0:14:05and I used drinking bowls out of animal sheds,

0:14:05 > 0:14:07and drilled holes in them

0:14:07 > 0:14:09so they could create this cascade as it went down.

0:14:09 > 0:14:13And I used things like metal grating for the background and then

0:14:13 > 0:14:15created a pebble mosaic.

0:14:20 > 0:14:24Jeni's always on the lookout for her next recycling project and

0:14:24 > 0:14:28sources as many of her materials from local salvage yards.

0:14:28 > 0:14:32Her recent find was some old railway sleepers.

0:14:32 > 0:14:35I had this sort of triangle area in my garden,

0:14:35 > 0:14:40so I used them in a sort of fan shape set into tarmac chippings,

0:14:40 > 0:14:42and then it's created this great space,

0:14:42 > 0:14:47which could be an area where alpines and things that grow in gravel,

0:14:47 > 0:14:49you know, could do really well,

0:14:49 > 0:14:51and I think it's been a really successful part of the garden.

0:14:56 > 0:15:00I've used oil drums quite a lot more recently because

0:15:00 > 0:15:03there are so many of them and they can be reused in

0:15:03 > 0:15:04so many different ways.

0:15:04 > 0:15:06So, using a plasma cutter,

0:15:06 > 0:15:11I could cut them in half and use wood as a top to make a seat,

0:15:11 > 0:15:12or I would cut the ends

0:15:12 > 0:15:16and create a piece of decorative artwork to go on the wall.

0:15:21 > 0:15:25Just change things, and they look new and fresh and...

0:15:25 > 0:15:27I just think there's so many...

0:15:27 > 0:15:29There's an endless world of possibilities.

0:15:35 > 0:15:40Back in Devizes, Charlie's got the recycling bit between her teeth

0:15:40 > 0:15:43and has found some more treasure behind the shed.

0:15:43 > 0:15:49In this garden, I'm going to include everything and the kitchen sink.

0:15:49 > 0:15:53- I...- Hey!- I think that's going to look amazing.- Shh!

0:15:53 > 0:15:54Going to plant it up, are you?

0:15:54 > 0:15:58- No. I thought it would make a great potting bench.- Yeah.- Yeah?

0:15:58 > 0:15:59- Like it.- Perfect.

0:16:01 > 0:16:02So, there's no rest for Adam.

0:16:02 > 0:16:04No sooner has he finished the composter,

0:16:04 > 0:16:07he's back amongst the pallets once more.

0:16:07 > 0:16:09Offer it up, as they say.

0:16:10 > 0:16:13Should sit nicely.

0:16:13 > 0:16:14That's... That's all right.

0:16:14 > 0:16:17So, the idea is this is a potting bench,

0:16:17 > 0:16:20so you can put the compost in here

0:16:20 > 0:16:22so it won't spill off or blow off,

0:16:22 > 0:16:24and then you can pot up on here.

0:16:24 > 0:16:28But then, likewise, you can put a plug in

0:16:28 > 0:16:31and fill that with water, and Norman can play in the water

0:16:31 > 0:16:33and have his cars and boats,

0:16:33 > 0:16:36and maybe a bit of soil, and make a real mess,

0:16:36 > 0:16:38which is great fun when you're a kid.

0:16:43 > 0:16:47One of the reasons Andrew chose Charlie's design over the boys'

0:16:47 > 0:16:51was her proposed areas for wildlife-friendly planting.

0:16:52 > 0:16:55In the top right corner of the plot,

0:16:55 > 0:16:58Charlie is planning a mixed native hedge for attracting the birds.

0:17:00 > 0:17:03At the moment, the fence is there, but it's a bit stark.

0:17:03 > 0:17:06And birds actually like to be able to hop in

0:17:06 > 0:17:09and look around in a hedge, and then go to the bird feeders.

0:17:09 > 0:17:13If it's a big, open area like this, they're always a bit wary.

0:17:13 > 0:17:17A native hedge is a mixed hedge that you'd see in the hedgerows

0:17:17 > 0:17:19up and down country lanes.

0:17:19 > 0:17:24It's made up of plant and shrub species native to the UK.

0:17:24 > 0:17:27We've got dogwood, so that's got big, open, pink flowers.

0:17:27 > 0:17:32We've got viburnum, which has lovely white flowers early summer.

0:17:32 > 0:17:35And then lots and lots of berries in the autumn,

0:17:35 > 0:17:39which the blackbirds love. Then we have also got privet.

0:17:39 > 0:17:43- BOTH:- Wild privet. - And we've got hawthorn.

0:17:43 > 0:17:46- We've got some beech as well, and hornbeam.- Yeah.

0:17:46 > 0:17:48Because the bigger the mix,

0:17:48 > 0:17:50the more of the variety of insects you'll get,

0:17:50 > 0:17:55so the more variety of birds and other wildlife you'll get.

0:17:55 > 0:17:58To make the budget go further, Charlie's bought young plants -

0:17:58 > 0:18:01or whips - rather than mature shrubs.

0:18:03 > 0:18:05We've got 100 whips.

0:18:05 > 0:18:08We're going to do a double row, then we're going to space them out

0:18:08 > 0:18:11about a foot to a foot and a bit apart,

0:18:11 > 0:18:14so we're going to get 50ft of hedge for £90.

0:18:14 > 0:18:18You couldn't do that with a solid fence. No way.

0:18:20 > 0:18:24Another way to tempt birds into the garden is with feeders,

0:18:24 > 0:18:26which can be bought from any garden centre.

0:18:26 > 0:18:30Charlie's ordered a couple and given the boys the job of building them.

0:18:30 > 0:18:32Where is M?

0:18:34 > 0:18:36M2.

0:18:36 > 0:18:38- Instructions back out. - HE SIGHS

0:18:39 > 0:18:43They may have a Chelsea gold medal under their belts,

0:18:43 > 0:18:47but when it comes to flat pack, they're all over the shop.

0:18:47 > 0:18:50I'm just trying to find... Where's the box this all came out of?

0:18:51 > 0:18:55At this rate, Charlie's hedge will be fully grown

0:18:55 > 0:18:57and attracting birds before the feeders are ready.

0:18:59 > 0:19:03Once planted, Charlie prunes the top of each whip.

0:19:03 > 0:19:07By cutting off the top section, what happens is you make

0:19:07 > 0:19:10all the growth come from the shoots at the bottom,

0:19:10 > 0:19:12so, of course, it gets thicker.

0:19:12 > 0:19:15The hedge will be planted in no time.

0:19:15 > 0:19:19But, sadly, progress is a little slower out the front.

0:19:22 > 0:19:26- M...times two. - There should be two of Ms.

0:19:26 > 0:19:29Have a look, see if you can see an M...anywhere.

0:19:29 > 0:19:32I've got my own troubles. I don't know which screw to use.

0:19:36 > 0:19:39While the boys finally get to grips with the feeders,

0:19:39 > 0:19:42things are moving on apace in the rest of the garden.

0:19:42 > 0:19:46And, happily, the potting bench cum mud kitchen is a triumph...

0:19:46 > 0:19:48Ready? Up.

0:19:48 > 0:19:50Ooh, that's a lot lighter than I thought.

0:19:50 > 0:19:54..and is ready to be moved into place, along with the compost bin.

0:19:55 > 0:19:58- Look at that. Dream! - It's as if it was measured.

0:20:00 > 0:20:03With the recycling and upcycling complete

0:20:03 > 0:20:04in Andrea and Gary's garden,

0:20:04 > 0:20:07the team are cracking on with the planting.

0:20:07 > 0:20:10- Charlie, we've got your trees for you.- Okey-cokey.

0:20:10 > 0:20:13Look at this. Beautiful crab apple - good choice!

0:20:13 > 0:20:14I've got the sorbus,

0:20:14 > 0:20:17so the beautiful kind of autumn colour in berries.

0:20:17 > 0:20:18It's all about that.

0:20:18 > 0:20:20- It's quite a showy one for late in the season.- Yeah.

0:20:21 > 0:20:25To add height to her design, Charlie has included two trees that

0:20:25 > 0:20:28will perform two key functions in the garden -

0:20:28 > 0:20:31they'll provide cover and berries for the birds,

0:20:31 > 0:20:36and block the unsightly rooftops at the back of the plot.

0:20:36 > 0:20:39I have to say - both planted very, very well.

0:20:39 > 0:20:41And as you're competitive,

0:20:41 > 0:20:44I would say the final finish probably goes to David here

0:20:44 > 0:20:46- cos he's fluffed his up a bit.- Woo!

0:20:47 > 0:20:49All right, I'll pay you that tenner later.

0:20:49 > 0:20:51LAUGHTER

0:20:51 > 0:20:54While Charlie carries on with the wildlife area,

0:20:54 > 0:20:58Harry and landscaper Scott are starting on the picket fence.

0:21:00 > 0:21:03Andrea and Gary have three dogs, so to help protect the new garden,

0:21:03 > 0:21:07Charlie is putting in a divide between the patio and the plot.

0:21:07 > 0:21:09I think it's going to be nice when this is up.

0:21:09 > 0:21:12There's a nice division between the two gardens.

0:21:12 > 0:21:13It's going to really define the area.

0:21:17 > 0:21:19But Charlie's wondering what's happened

0:21:19 > 0:21:21to the last part of the veg garden.

0:21:24 > 0:21:29David, would you like to help me bring in the lean-to greenhouse?

0:21:29 > 0:21:31- Ooh, I don't know if it's done. - What do you mean, it's not done?

0:21:31 > 0:21:34- Three-quarters of the way. - Why is that, then?

0:21:34 > 0:21:36Was there a piece of M that you didn't know where it went?

0:21:36 > 0:21:39- It was O!- It was O!

0:21:39 > 0:21:41Well, shall we bring it in and finish it,

0:21:41 > 0:21:43and see if it'll fit in that spot?

0:21:43 > 0:21:44I like that idea.

0:21:44 > 0:21:48David's been nobbled and he's back on flat-pack detail

0:21:48 > 0:21:50under Charlie's watchful eye.

0:21:51 > 0:21:53The instructions are down by you, aren't they?

0:21:53 > 0:21:58Well, I can tell you now, you need to put four screws

0:21:58 > 0:22:00along the back there, for that.

0:22:00 > 0:22:02Then you need to come and put these screws in...

0:22:02 > 0:22:05because your brother seems to have had a bit of a moment there.

0:22:11 > 0:22:13So, we're putting a little cold frame in,

0:22:13 > 0:22:16so it's sort of got polycarbonate on it,

0:22:16 > 0:22:17so it's slightly insulated,

0:22:17 > 0:22:20but it'll be great for starting seeds off.

0:22:20 > 0:22:22It'll just give them that little bit of boost,

0:22:22 > 0:22:25especially in the spring, and give them a little bit of protection,

0:22:25 > 0:22:28until it's ready to plant them out.

0:22:28 > 0:22:30So, it'll be quite fun for Norman.

0:22:30 > 0:22:33And also, Andrea said she wanted to be growing some of her own

0:22:33 > 0:22:36vegetables and plants for the garden.

0:22:39 > 0:22:43The landscaping in the garden is finally coming together,

0:22:43 > 0:22:46so Charlie's free to start placing out her plants in the borders.

0:22:46 > 0:22:50Now, I think shrubs first because of the structure.

0:22:52 > 0:22:55The key to the planting in Charlie's design

0:22:55 > 0:22:57are the two beds nearest the patio.

0:22:59 > 0:23:03Shrubs will give them structure, so she places them first.

0:23:04 > 0:23:07A lot of these shrubs might look like they're well spaced out,

0:23:07 > 0:23:11but this spiraea is actually going to get quite tall, and as you

0:23:11 > 0:23:13can see, the exochorda gets to that size,

0:23:13 > 0:23:16so we need to give them the space.

0:23:20 > 0:23:24Charlie's also adding some wigwams for growing sweet peas.

0:23:24 > 0:23:28They'll pump out lovely scent next to the patio and add instant

0:23:28 > 0:23:31height, which will be particularly welcome in Andrea and Gary's

0:23:31 > 0:23:33garden while the new plants mature.

0:23:38 > 0:23:41The one outstanding feature of Charlie's design

0:23:41 > 0:23:43yet to go in is the pergola.

0:23:43 > 0:23:47Adam has already concreted in the posts and they have set firm.

0:23:49 > 0:23:50Thank you very much.

0:23:52 > 0:23:55I always find that height gets neglected in gardens quite a lot.

0:23:55 > 0:23:57Especially with this garden, there's quite a lot of detail

0:23:57 > 0:24:00- on the ground, with the gravel and the bricks, isn't there?- Yes.

0:24:00 > 0:24:04- So that really lifts it up, doesn't it?- I think it's a really nice feature, I think it's...

0:24:04 > 0:24:06- Because you built it, that's why. - Yeah, obviously.

0:24:06 > 0:24:09- THEY LAUGH - But I like the way it frames

0:24:09 > 0:24:11this circle in the lawn as well, as you walk off the patio.

0:24:11 > 0:24:13I think it's really nice.

0:24:18 > 0:24:22This garden has been more than just a test of the team's design

0:24:22 > 0:24:24and horticultural skills.

0:24:24 > 0:24:28They've had to be bricklayers, joiners and DIY experts as well.

0:24:30 > 0:24:33But it's been worth it to make Andrea and Gary's limited

0:24:33 > 0:24:36budget go as far as possible.

0:24:36 > 0:24:39- And we have got some vegetables to go in there.- Oh, cool.

0:24:39 > 0:24:42- Well, let's put them in, shall we?- Yeah.

0:24:47 > 0:24:50And as the last adjustments are made to the bird feeders

0:24:50 > 0:24:52and the final plants go in,

0:24:52 > 0:24:55the garden is ready for its grand unveiling.

0:25:01 > 0:25:05For years, Andrea and Gary have longed for a garden of their own,

0:25:05 > 0:25:09and when they eventually got this one, it was drab and boring.

0:25:10 > 0:25:14Now it's had a £1,500 makeover.

0:25:14 > 0:25:18Charlie and the team have spent every penny of the budget to try

0:25:18 > 0:25:20and make this garden work for all the family.

0:25:22 > 0:25:27She spent £340 on a picket fence and timber to create a stunning

0:25:27 > 0:25:32pergola, which adds instant height and a gateway to the new garden.

0:25:34 > 0:25:38The interlocking circles have transformed the featureless lawn.

0:25:39 > 0:25:43And the bricks to edge them came at a cost of £150.

0:25:46 > 0:25:51The wildlife area will mature into a welcoming B&B for birds.

0:25:51 > 0:25:54It all cost £250,

0:25:54 > 0:25:57but will provide endless delight for the whole family.

0:25:59 > 0:26:01The new, upcycled potting bench,

0:26:01 > 0:26:05compost bin and lean-to greenhouse cost just £72,

0:26:05 > 0:26:09and will set the family on track with growing their own veg.

0:26:11 > 0:26:15And Charlie's well-chosen planting means that, as the garden matures,

0:26:15 > 0:26:17it will have plenty of colour and interest,

0:26:17 > 0:26:19even in the darkest months.

0:26:20 > 0:26:25Andrea and Gary were prepared to stake £1,500 of their own money

0:26:25 > 0:26:28on making the first garden they have ever owned

0:26:28 > 0:26:31into something truly special.

0:26:31 > 0:26:35It's time to find out if Charlie's design was up to the task.

0:26:35 > 0:26:38- Do you think she'll like it? - I think definitely.- I think so.

0:26:38 > 0:26:41I think this little dog will love it as well.

0:26:41 > 0:26:43He'll run around there.

0:26:43 > 0:26:45You can open your eyes.

0:26:47 > 0:26:48Wow.

0:26:48 > 0:26:52This is your growing area, playing area, digging.

0:26:52 > 0:26:56- Norman's got a step up to the sink area.- I love that.

0:26:56 > 0:26:59Norman is going to love his little area, isn't he?

0:26:59 > 0:27:01I think, yeah, he's going to go straight to it...

0:27:01 > 0:27:03Straight up on!

0:27:03 > 0:27:05- Over here...- Wow, yep.

0:27:05 > 0:27:06..that's all your planting.

0:27:06 > 0:27:08They're quite small at the moment,

0:27:08 > 0:27:10but they're going to fill this space.

0:27:10 > 0:27:12This will become a lovely,

0:27:12 > 0:27:16full place with lots of colour and plants.

0:27:16 > 0:27:18And then we have got...

0:27:19 > 0:27:22- ..your mini orchard.- Wow.

0:27:22 > 0:27:26So, we've got an apple tree, a plum tree and a pear tree.

0:27:26 > 0:27:28And then you've got your pergola.

0:27:28 > 0:27:31It's lovely, yeah. Will that one climb over that?

0:27:31 > 0:27:34Yes, we've got two honeysuckles, so a nice lot of scent.

0:27:34 > 0:27:38But there's space for you to put your own climbers in as well.

0:27:38 > 0:27:41Or what you could do is buy some seeds, start them off in

0:27:41 > 0:27:45your little cold frame there, and then plant them out.

0:27:46 > 0:27:51This garden has been transformed for just £1,500.

0:27:51 > 0:27:54Charlie has boxed clever with the small budget,

0:27:54 > 0:27:57and recycled and reused wherever possible

0:27:57 > 0:28:01to try and give Andrea and Gary the garden they have longed for.

0:28:01 > 0:28:03I think it's just fabulous. It's lovely.

0:28:03 > 0:28:08It's just what I wanted and just how I had pictured it in my mind.

0:28:08 > 0:28:10And, obviously, the plan as well.

0:28:10 > 0:28:13For such a simple design and not a lot of money,

0:28:13 > 0:28:16I think it's really made the garden something special.

0:28:16 > 0:28:19I think my favourite bit of the whole garden is the bit

0:28:19 > 0:28:21forward of the sink, and all that upcycled area.

0:28:21 > 0:28:23And all that stuff's free.

0:28:24 > 0:28:27It was just all plain and boring,

0:28:27 > 0:28:30and now it seems like we have an actual garden,

0:28:30 > 0:28:32and it feels so much more homely.

0:28:34 > 0:28:35It's going to be great. I love it.
