0:00:02 > 0:00:04With her can-do attitude, love of simple gardens,
0:00:04 > 0:00:06and decades of experience,
0:00:06 > 0:00:09Charlie Dimmock is one of Britain's best loved gardeners.
0:00:09 > 0:00:12Looking good, boys.
0:00:12 > 0:00:15But the new kids on the gardening block are the Rich brothers.
0:00:15 > 0:00:16We want to be the brothers
0:00:16 > 0:00:19that change people's perceptions of gardens.
0:00:19 > 0:00:22Winners of multiple medals at the Chelsea Flower Show...
0:00:22 > 0:00:24- Oh, good turn. - That's amazing, isn't it?
0:00:24 > 0:00:28..the boys have become known for their dramatic outdoor spaces.
0:00:29 > 0:00:34Now, these two different generations of gardening are going head-to-head.
0:00:34 > 0:00:38I know they've got a gold medal, but I can come up with a few ideas.
0:00:38 > 0:00:42They are meeting frustrated garden owners across the country...
0:00:42 > 0:00:44Not a lot going on, is there?
0:00:44 > 0:00:46- Not a lot.- I don't know what to do with it.
0:00:46 > 0:00:49..and we'll each pitch them a design, based on their needs...
0:00:49 > 0:00:50Wow!
0:00:50 > 0:00:52..and budget.
0:00:52 > 0:00:53That sounds amazing.
0:00:53 > 0:00:55Doesn't look like it could be our garden.
0:00:55 > 0:00:58- The winner...- Charlie!- Yeah!
0:00:58 > 0:01:00..brings their design to life.
0:01:00 > 0:01:01Hold on, hold on.
0:01:01 > 0:01:02Sweet as a nut.
0:01:02 > 0:01:05..and the loser has to help them build it.
0:01:05 > 0:01:07Keep working, keep working, boy!
0:01:07 > 0:01:09Whoa, whoa, whoa! Easy.
0:01:09 > 0:01:11This is what happens...
0:01:11 > 0:01:13Just get on with it! Sometime today will be good.
0:01:13 > 0:01:15..when different styles collide...
0:01:15 > 0:01:18I think your brother is throwing the toys out of his pram.
0:01:18 > 0:01:19Right, are we doing this?
0:01:19 > 0:01:23..to turn garden dreams into reality.
0:01:23 > 0:01:27- Open your eyes.- Oh, it's lovely!
0:01:27 > 0:01:29- Wow!- Look at that!
0:01:29 > 0:01:33Wow! It's not our garden!
0:01:39 > 0:01:41It's time for Charlie and the Rich brothers
0:01:41 > 0:01:43to find out about today's garden challenge.
0:01:43 > 0:01:47Here we have Corrina and Richard and their lovely family.
0:01:47 > 0:01:49Oh, isn't that a lovely photo?
0:01:49 > 0:01:51And they are from Weston-Super-Mare
0:01:51 > 0:01:55and they have a new-build property, but in a traditional cottage style.
0:01:55 > 0:01:59Richard, a contracts manager, and psychotherapist Corrina
0:01:59 > 0:02:03bought their home in Weston-Super-Mare three years ago.
0:02:03 > 0:02:05Although Corrina and Richard fell in love with the house,
0:02:05 > 0:02:08the garden leaves a lot to be desired.
0:02:08 > 0:02:10Here is their garden.
0:02:10 > 0:02:13- That looks busy. - It's a funny old shape.
0:02:13 > 0:02:15- Yeah.- Yeah, it's a bit of an odd shape.
0:02:15 > 0:02:16It wraps around the house a little bit,
0:02:16 > 0:02:19which could be quite fun, leaves different spaces.
0:02:19 > 0:02:21But, at the moment, it's a real mismatch.
0:02:21 > 0:02:25- It's all over the place.- We've got slabs, gravel, artificial lawn...
0:02:25 > 0:02:27- Yeah.- Decking.- Decking.
0:02:27 > 0:02:29The garden is a disaster.
0:02:29 > 0:02:32We don't know what to do with it. It's a really awkward shape.
0:02:32 > 0:02:35I wouldn't say we are gardeners, really.
0:02:35 > 0:02:37I think we want a really lovely garden.
0:02:37 > 0:02:41We just have absolutely no clue of where to begin,
0:02:41 > 0:02:43what plants to choose.
0:02:43 > 0:02:45And there's another important reason
0:02:45 > 0:02:48why they need to sort out their uneven garden.
0:02:48 > 0:02:52We have three children and Ronnie, the littlest,
0:02:52 > 0:02:55has a disability called Charcot-Marie-Tooth syndrome,
0:02:55 > 0:02:58which is a muscle wasting disease.
0:02:58 > 0:03:01It's progressive, so it gets worse as you get older.
0:03:01 > 0:03:04Basically means he is unsure on his feet
0:03:04 > 0:03:08and suffers with balance problems.
0:03:08 > 0:03:10Things like that, really.
0:03:10 > 0:03:13So he needs something where it is flat,
0:03:13 > 0:03:16somewhere he can really enjoy coming outside and playing, I'd say.
0:03:16 > 0:03:18Yeah, definitely.
0:03:18 > 0:03:20And with only a £3,000 budget,
0:03:20 > 0:03:23the designers are going to have their work cut out.
0:03:25 > 0:03:28Not the biggest amount of money, but it's not the largest garden.
0:03:28 > 0:03:30No, it's quite a small space, by the looks of things.
0:03:30 > 0:03:34Yeah. One thing this garden needs is kind of a simplified design
0:03:34 > 0:03:36and a bit of unity.
0:03:36 > 0:03:38And a bit of planting cos there doesn't seem
0:03:38 > 0:03:39to be actually any plants.
0:03:39 > 0:03:42No. There are some existing materials,
0:03:42 > 0:03:45so I think we can re-use some of them, help the budget stretch.
0:03:45 > 0:03:47I think, all in all, it's a garden that just needs to be united
0:03:47 > 0:03:50and needs to be really safe and functional for the whole family.
0:03:52 > 0:03:54Charlie and the Rich brothers love a challenge
0:03:54 > 0:03:56so they head to Weston-Super-Mare to get a first-hand look
0:03:56 > 0:03:58at what they are dealing with.
0:03:58 > 0:04:00With each of them hoping to win the contract,
0:04:00 > 0:04:03they'll be on the lookout for anything that gives them an edge.
0:04:06 > 0:04:08Oh, the excitement, the excitement!
0:04:08 > 0:04:11Oh, nice wall!
0:04:11 > 0:04:13It is a nice bit of stonework, isn't it?
0:04:13 > 0:04:16Yeah. Turf might have seen better days.
0:04:16 > 0:04:19- A little bit.- Not much of a level going on there.
0:04:19 > 0:04:21- No.- A bit all over the place.
0:04:21 > 0:04:24It gives it away that it's not real as well, I think.
0:04:24 > 0:04:27Perhaps they lift it up and sweep all the leaves underneath.
0:04:27 > 0:04:29It's a little bit chaotic at the moment.
0:04:29 > 0:04:31- Disjointed.- Very disjointed.
0:04:31 > 0:04:32It hasn't got a purpose.
0:04:32 > 0:04:34No theme other than the walls.
0:04:34 > 0:04:37At the moment, it's just open. Void of anything.
0:04:39 > 0:04:42The boys head inside to see if they can pick up any clues
0:04:42 > 0:04:44about the couple's taste,
0:04:44 > 0:04:47while Charlie meets Corrina and Richard
0:04:47 > 0:04:50to find out what happened to all their plants.
0:04:50 > 0:04:53Well, tell me about your garden.
0:04:53 > 0:04:58- It's a bit sad. - I've noticed it's a little bit sad.
0:04:58 > 0:05:00There's no plants, Richard.
0:05:00 > 0:05:01Well, there is a story behind that.
0:05:01 > 0:05:03We did have some plants
0:05:03 > 0:05:07and then we had an idea to start doing the garden ourselves.
0:05:07 > 0:05:10Keen to get the ball rolling,
0:05:10 > 0:05:13Corrina hired someone to clear the garden.
0:05:14 > 0:05:16I went out one day and I came back
0:05:16 > 0:05:19and some man had come round and taken everything out of the garden.
0:05:19 > 0:05:21Stripped back bare.
0:05:21 > 0:05:24I thought it would be easier to start with a blank canvas.
0:05:24 > 0:05:26OK. A lot of people do that.
0:05:26 > 0:05:28- Yeah.- Yes.- I think it may have been a mistake.
0:05:31 > 0:05:32This is cosy, isn't it?
0:05:32 > 0:05:33Really nice, yeah.
0:05:33 > 0:05:36It has quite a nice bit of warmth to it, doesn't it?
0:05:36 > 0:05:39Some deep colours, lovely upholstery as well with the tartan.
0:05:39 > 0:05:41And this?
0:05:41 > 0:05:43- Not real.- No.
0:05:43 > 0:05:44- Wallpaper, fooled me.- Yeah.
0:05:44 > 0:05:46Cos there's a nice stone wall outside.
0:05:46 > 0:05:49I think what they've done is try to replicate that same texture
0:05:49 > 0:05:52and that same authenticity of, like, tradition and naturalness.
0:05:52 > 0:05:55Yeah. I think it's kind of very much what the house is about.
0:05:55 > 0:05:56It's quite new, isn't it?
0:05:56 > 0:05:58But they've tied in a lot of classic elements.
0:05:58 > 0:05:59Yeah. And that's pretty...
0:05:59 > 0:06:02It is, yeah. You've got your single room here.
0:06:02 > 0:06:03- Yeah.- But through the glass doors,
0:06:03 > 0:06:05it's actually very much connected to that space there.
0:06:05 > 0:06:08Yeah, it actually makes really usable space.
0:06:09 > 0:06:11So the children obviously use the garden a lot,
0:06:11 > 0:06:13but do you guys use it?
0:06:13 > 0:06:16Yes, we do. We really like to entertain.
0:06:16 > 0:06:18For Christmas dinner, we had 18 people.
0:06:18 > 0:06:23So we always have barbecues and summer drinks
0:06:23 > 0:06:25and we try and entertain outside as much as we can,
0:06:25 > 0:06:27as much as the weather will let us.
0:06:27 > 0:06:29So you want it functional, you want to unite it,
0:06:29 > 0:06:31you want to make it look bigger.
0:06:31 > 0:06:34But is there a style?
0:06:34 > 0:06:35I would say modern cottage,
0:06:35 > 0:06:37- if that's possible. - Modern cottage?- Yeah.
0:06:37 > 0:06:42I like all the cottage planting and those sort of types of plants.
0:06:42 > 0:06:44But still sort of some of the modern clean lines
0:06:44 > 0:06:46- as well that go along with that.- OK.
0:06:48 > 0:06:50Oh! That works well, doesn't it?
0:06:50 > 0:06:52You can see how that works really nicely.
0:06:52 > 0:06:55- Yeah.- You've got two very individual rooms, but through this,
0:06:55 > 0:06:57they've got a lovely connectivity.
0:06:57 > 0:06:58If there was a party here or something,
0:06:58 > 0:07:00it could be one big space.
0:07:00 > 0:07:01Yeah. I think what is so nice as well
0:07:01 > 0:07:04is the fact that you do have these two different areas.
0:07:04 > 0:07:06And, you know, in the garden, it's nice to have maybe
0:07:06 > 0:07:08those different personalities within the...
0:07:08 > 0:07:11Yeah, well, you could have the cosy living space
0:07:11 > 0:07:12and the more open dining space.
0:07:12 > 0:07:15Yeah. Maybe have some kind of way of connecting them
0:07:15 > 0:07:17- without feeling as if they are one. - Yeah.
0:07:19 > 0:07:23So, if I had to pin you down to sort of three things that are a must,
0:07:23 > 0:07:25what would they be?
0:07:25 > 0:07:28I would say the levels in the garden, it needs to be flat.
0:07:28 > 0:07:30- So, level surface.- Mm-hmm.
0:07:30 > 0:07:32The artificial turf...
0:07:32 > 0:07:33Artificial grass, yes.
0:07:33 > 0:07:36And, obviously, it's not all about the kids,
0:07:36 > 0:07:37so a nice entertaining space.
0:07:38 > 0:07:42- A grown-up side. So...- This small space has got to work really hard.
0:07:42 > 0:07:44- Yeah.- Really hard.- We are expecting you to work miracles.
0:07:46 > 0:07:47No pressure, then(!)
0:07:48 > 0:07:52The couple have put in a tall order for a modern yet traditional garden
0:07:52 > 0:07:54that's big enough for entertaining,
0:07:54 > 0:07:56but, most importantly, is safe enough
0:07:56 > 0:07:58for Ronnie to play in
0:07:58 > 0:07:59and all for just £3,000.
0:08:02 > 0:08:05Charlie and the Rich brothers will compete against each other
0:08:05 > 0:08:07to come up with a design that will work
0:08:07 > 0:08:09within Corrina and Richard's budget.
0:08:12 > 0:08:14The couple will then have to choose a winner
0:08:14 > 0:08:18and whoever loses will have to help the winner build the garden.
0:08:20 > 0:08:23The budget will be used to cover the cost of the materials
0:08:23 > 0:08:26for their new garden, while the labour will be supplied by Charlie,
0:08:26 > 0:08:29the Rich brothers and their team of landscapers.
0:08:33 > 0:08:35It's time for the designers to pitch their ideas.
0:08:37 > 0:08:39- You ready for this?- I'm excited!
0:08:40 > 0:08:42The Rich brothers have seen how the couple like
0:08:42 > 0:08:45to blend traditional and modern elements.
0:08:45 > 0:08:46OK!
0:08:46 > 0:08:49How will this feature in their design?
0:08:50 > 0:08:53While Charlie knows they want a garden
0:08:53 > 0:08:55that works for all the family and their many friends.
0:08:55 > 0:08:57Here we go!
0:08:57 > 0:09:00How will she make the most of the couple's small space?
0:09:00 > 0:09:02So the main concept of our design
0:09:02 > 0:09:05is we want to create this very traditional-feeling garden,
0:09:05 > 0:09:07but also have quite a modern structure to it.
0:09:07 > 0:09:08And as you can see from the plan,
0:09:08 > 0:09:11the zones are very much the same within the garden,
0:09:11 > 0:09:13but their function and their appearance has changed dramatically.
0:09:14 > 0:09:17Harry and David plan to spruce up the decking
0:09:17 > 0:09:20and replace the artificial lawn with a new properly laid one.
0:09:22 > 0:09:24But while the brothers are redesigning
0:09:24 > 0:09:25the dividing-up of the space,
0:09:25 > 0:09:27Charlie is getting rid of most of that.
0:09:29 > 0:09:33It's a garden of two halves and I've simplified the design.
0:09:33 > 0:09:36By simplifying it, it's going to make the garden look bigger.
0:09:36 > 0:09:40This is a step out from your conservatory.
0:09:40 > 0:09:43I've made it bigger and then this is all one level,
0:09:43 > 0:09:45right the way through.
0:09:46 > 0:09:48The wider step and level ground
0:09:48 > 0:09:51will make the garden much safer for Ronnie to run around in
0:09:51 > 0:09:53and a large area of artificial turf
0:09:53 > 0:09:55will make a good play area for all the children.
0:09:57 > 0:10:01The adults will have their own patio, set at a 45 degree angle.
0:10:01 > 0:10:04It will really make the garden feel bigger
0:10:04 > 0:10:06and be an ideal space for a party.
0:10:07 > 0:10:12Harry and David are also thinking about the couple's guests.
0:10:12 > 0:10:14Really, we wanted to create this as a bit more of an adult space.
0:10:14 > 0:10:16We want to keep it as a dining area.
0:10:16 > 0:10:19A dining table in the middle of the garden
0:10:19 > 0:10:22and a more informal cosy space at the bottom,
0:10:22 > 0:10:25providing two separate but interconnecting spaces
0:10:25 > 0:10:28for entertaining with feature walls framing each area.
0:10:28 > 0:10:30If you've got lots of friends around,
0:10:30 > 0:10:33then these walls become lovely areas
0:10:33 > 0:10:36just to perch and enjoy a coffee or a drink.
0:10:36 > 0:10:39The brothers have given the couple ample seating
0:10:39 > 0:10:40in their entertaining spaces,
0:10:40 > 0:10:44while Charlie wants to heat things up in her design.
0:10:44 > 0:10:49So, the paving is terracotta, to warm the garden up.
0:10:49 > 0:10:51Down at the end here,
0:10:51 > 0:10:57we've got this feature of terracotta pots to draw your eye out
0:10:57 > 0:10:59and that's going to look good all year round.
0:10:59 > 0:11:03I'm using quite a few evergreens to get some structure there.
0:11:03 > 0:11:06Charlie knows the couple are not the keenest of gardeners
0:11:06 > 0:11:10so has given them lots of easy to care for plants.
0:11:10 > 0:11:13Harry and David have also gone for a low-maintenance approach,
0:11:13 > 0:11:15but have a specific theme in mind.
0:11:15 > 0:11:17We are going to tailor it around
0:11:17 > 0:11:19a bit more of a natural woodland-style garden
0:11:19 > 0:11:22so use things that are quite soft, some early flowering,
0:11:22 > 0:11:24things like bluebells maybe, some hellebores.
0:11:24 > 0:11:26So it will always be quite luscious and green,
0:11:26 > 0:11:29but maybe have things like foxgloves that come up and astrantias
0:11:29 > 0:11:31they give that lovely little burst of white.
0:11:31 > 0:11:34And then what we thought would be really nice maybe in this spot here
0:11:34 > 0:11:36was to use a slightly more ornamental tree,
0:11:36 > 0:11:39so maybe something like a cherry, which blossomed.
0:11:39 > 0:11:40So, small growing, quite dappled,
0:11:40 > 0:11:42but gives you a lovely focal point in the garden.
0:11:44 > 0:11:48The brothers have chosen native woodland planting in their design.
0:11:48 > 0:11:51But Charlie has warmer climates in mind.
0:11:51 > 0:11:54To make it colourful and glamorous,
0:11:54 > 0:11:56I've got lots of Mediterranean plants
0:11:56 > 0:12:00that, you know, have got aromatic smells as well as lovely colours,
0:12:00 > 0:12:03but also will look after themselves.
0:12:04 > 0:12:08So, it's sort of that Mediterranean lifestyle,
0:12:08 > 0:12:11being outside as much as you possibly can,
0:12:11 > 0:12:13when the weather allows.
0:12:13 > 0:12:15Does that sort of appeal?
0:12:15 > 0:12:18- Yes, definitely.- Definitely, yes.
0:12:18 > 0:12:19I like it.
0:12:19 > 0:12:24So, will the couple go for the Rich brothers' zoned woodland wonderland?
0:12:24 > 0:12:26Or Charlie's Mediterranean party garden?
0:12:26 > 0:12:28It's time to decide.
0:12:30 > 0:12:31- It is all one level.- Yeah.
0:12:31 > 0:12:34And the larger step coming out from the house is easier as well.
0:12:34 > 0:12:36- It makes it a lot easier for Ronnie. - Yeah.
0:12:36 > 0:12:39It has got that nice Mediterranean feel.
0:12:39 > 0:12:41You know... I just think on dull days,
0:12:41 > 0:12:43it's going to look that much brighter.
0:12:43 > 0:12:46I really simplified it, down to two areas.
0:12:46 > 0:12:49- Yeah.- OK. - Adult entertainment, children.
0:12:49 > 0:12:51I really like the way that the garden
0:12:51 > 0:12:53has been divided up into different areas,
0:12:53 > 0:12:55almost like different zones.
0:12:55 > 0:12:58If you've got a small garden, sometimes by putting more into it,
0:12:58 > 0:13:03which is in contrast to yours, you make it feel bigger.
0:13:03 > 0:13:05Does it not make it look more cluttered?
0:13:05 > 0:13:07Not if it's carefully done.
0:13:07 > 0:13:09I love the idea of the cherry tree.
0:13:09 > 0:13:11- Yeah.- I love cherry blossom and that's really nice.
0:13:11 > 0:13:15I think this is modern cottage, which is sort of what we wanted.
0:13:15 > 0:13:18I could see us in that.
0:13:18 > 0:13:19This is closer, I think,
0:13:19 > 0:13:22to what I would like the garden to be like.
0:13:22 > 0:13:24I think I like this one.
0:13:26 > 0:13:30Richard is taken with Charlie's warm Mediterranean tiles
0:13:30 > 0:13:32and larger area for the children to play in.
0:13:32 > 0:13:35But Corrina loves the Rich brothers' modern cottage garden
0:13:35 > 0:13:37and it is exactly what she asked for.
0:13:37 > 0:13:40Only one design can win, so whose will it be?
0:13:43 > 0:13:45Hello!
0:13:45 > 0:13:47Hi, guys.
0:13:48 > 0:13:51OK. So, we've decided to go with...
0:13:52 > 0:13:54..Charlie.
0:13:54 > 0:13:56It's the diagonal that did it.
0:13:56 > 0:14:00- It is, yeah.- We've chosen this one, I think, mainly because you said
0:14:00 > 0:14:02it is going to make the garden look bigger.
0:14:02 > 0:14:05- I think that was what sold it for us.- Yeah, yeah.
0:14:05 > 0:14:08We thought as well that the kids would have
0:14:08 > 0:14:11sort of a bit more area to play in as well.
0:14:11 > 0:14:13It was so hard to choose, though,
0:14:13 > 0:14:17cos I absolutely loved, like, the dwarf walls in the boys' design.
0:14:17 > 0:14:19It felt really modern, but you kept the decking
0:14:19 > 0:14:22- and I can't bear the deck. - We would have got rid of it!
0:14:22 > 0:14:25Too late, too late. It's mine!
0:14:25 > 0:14:26It's mine!
0:14:26 > 0:14:29Charlie is thrilled.
0:14:29 > 0:14:31But with a modest budget and a lot of work to do,
0:14:31 > 0:14:33she's really going to need the boys' help.
0:14:38 > 0:14:41It is early morning in a wet Weston-Super-Mare
0:14:41 > 0:14:44and project manager Bonnie and head landscaper Scott
0:14:44 > 0:14:46are poring over Charlie's plan.
0:14:46 > 0:14:48- Cool.- This is all terracotta tiles
0:14:48 > 0:14:50to give a nice Mediterranean feel
0:14:50 > 0:14:52and Charlie wants to lay them on the diagonal
0:14:52 > 0:14:54- to give the illusion of the space being bigger.- Nice!
0:14:54 > 0:14:56- That'll make your job a bit easier. - Brilliant.
0:14:56 > 0:14:58- Nice slanted step as well.- Yeah.
0:14:58 > 0:15:00This is a sleeper raised bed.
0:15:00 > 0:15:03- OK.- And these are all just lower normal ground level raised beds
0:15:03 > 0:15:05and then this is artificial grass.
0:15:05 > 0:15:08- We're going to take all the deck up and...- OK.- And lay that grass.
0:15:10 > 0:15:11There's no time to waste
0:15:11 > 0:15:13so the team are clearing the decks
0:15:13 > 0:15:16and getting rid of all those uneven surfaces.
0:15:19 > 0:15:23First to go is that horrible old artificial turf.
0:15:23 > 0:15:25Now, that is how not to lay artificial grass.
0:15:25 > 0:15:28I know, yeah. It's been rolled out like a mat, hasn't it?
0:15:30 > 0:15:33The grass that we are going to get has got a much deeper pile.
0:15:33 > 0:15:35- There we go.- Is that for me?
0:15:35 > 0:15:36For you, yeah.
0:15:36 > 0:15:38That came up easy.
0:15:40 > 0:15:44Now the turf is up, Bonnie has spotted a running form of bamboo
0:15:44 > 0:15:47that could take over if left unchecked.
0:15:47 > 0:15:49Look at this. The roots have just gone everywhere.
0:15:49 > 0:15:55This is a dwarf bamboo and it pops up in cracks, between pavings.
0:15:55 > 0:15:57This is a really good example of why you need to be careful
0:15:57 > 0:16:00where you plant it because you need to contain the roots
0:16:00 > 0:16:02and make sure that this doesn't happen.
0:16:05 > 0:16:08To ensure they end up with one level surface,
0:16:08 > 0:16:10the team have hired a mini digger.
0:16:11 > 0:16:13But Bonnie is worried it might not fit
0:16:13 > 0:16:15down the narrow path to the garden.
0:16:16 > 0:16:17This is the moment of truth.
0:16:17 > 0:16:20If we can't get this digger through this very small gap,
0:16:20 > 0:16:22we are going to have to dig it all out by hand,
0:16:22 > 0:16:24which is a bit of a mission.
0:16:25 > 0:16:26There's a lot to do in the garden
0:16:26 > 0:16:28and if the team are forced to dig out by hand,
0:16:28 > 0:16:31they really will be squeezed for time.
0:16:31 > 0:16:34Wait, wait, we need to turn that way quite a bit now
0:16:34 > 0:16:35cos of the blade.
0:16:35 > 0:16:36That's it.
0:16:36 > 0:16:38- Good.- Like a challenge, don't we?
0:16:38 > 0:16:40Yeah, we do.
0:16:40 > 0:16:43Lucky, that! Good job.
0:16:43 > 0:16:46Good job. Glad I'm not driving the digger!
0:16:49 > 0:16:51- Excellent. We are in.- Woohoo!
0:16:52 > 0:16:55I'm really glad we managed to get that in.
0:16:55 > 0:16:57The team are relieved.
0:16:57 > 0:16:59The digger will save them hours of backbreaking work.
0:16:59 > 0:17:02But it does come at a cost.
0:17:02 > 0:17:05So, to eke out every penny of the budget,
0:17:05 > 0:17:07Charlie has asked the team to salvage
0:17:07 > 0:17:09as much of the existing materials as possible
0:17:09 > 0:17:12so they can be reused elsewhere in the garden.
0:17:14 > 0:17:16So, these are perfectly good strong decking boards.
0:17:16 > 0:17:18It's a shame to throw them away,
0:17:18 > 0:17:20so we are going to try and re-use them
0:17:20 > 0:17:22to save on sleepers in the raised beds.
0:17:22 > 0:17:24It's not just the decking.
0:17:24 > 0:17:28The stones and soil from the old planter are also being earmarked.
0:17:28 > 0:17:30This garden is like a treasure trove, isn't it?
0:17:30 > 0:17:32Yeah, there's loads of stuff in here.
0:17:32 > 0:17:34We can use that soil as well for the raised bed.
0:17:34 > 0:17:36- Yeah.- Instead of buying any more topsoil.- Yeah.
0:17:36 > 0:17:38One, two, three.
0:17:38 > 0:17:41Even the old arbour will be given a new lease of life later
0:17:41 > 0:17:43with a lick of paint.
0:17:53 > 0:17:56- 4.3.- Right, OK.
0:17:56 > 0:17:59Bonnie and Scott mark out and prepare the ground
0:17:59 > 0:18:02so they can begin to lay the patio tiles.
0:18:02 > 0:18:03Good. Nice and big.
0:18:05 > 0:18:06It's yellow.
0:18:07 > 0:18:10I thought it would cheer us up, a bit of sunshine.
0:18:10 > 0:18:114.3 that way.
0:18:12 > 0:18:14The garden is progressing well.
0:18:14 > 0:18:16- 4.3.- Cool.
0:18:16 > 0:18:19And Charlie and the Rich brothers arrive on site.
0:18:19 > 0:18:22Charlie is not wasting any time in cracking the whip.
0:18:22 > 0:18:24Right, then, boys.
0:18:24 > 0:18:26My design. Budget is tight.
0:18:26 > 0:18:29So there's going to be lots and lots of recycling.
0:18:29 > 0:18:31- I love it.- I want your noggins working today,
0:18:31 > 0:18:36thinking about how we can get the garden done on a very tight budget,
0:18:36 > 0:18:40- so recycle, recycle.- No problem. - But first up,
0:18:40 > 0:18:43I've seen you both do some amazing sculpting with turf...
0:18:43 > 0:18:45You are teeing us up!
0:18:45 > 0:18:51I am going to challenge you with laying some artificial grass.
0:18:51 > 0:18:53That's different end of the spectrum, isn't it?
0:18:53 > 0:18:56It is. It's a really good surface for the children,
0:18:56 > 0:18:57very versatile,
0:18:57 > 0:19:00and I'm going to be doing some raised beds and pointing.
0:19:02 > 0:19:05While David and Harry sort out the materials they need for the turf,
0:19:05 > 0:19:07Charlie gets the lay of the land.
0:19:07 > 0:19:10This area here is going to be the artificial grass.
0:19:10 > 0:19:12Now we've cleared the deck out and the trellis,
0:19:12 > 0:19:14it's made this area look really huge,
0:19:14 > 0:19:16which is going to be great for the children.
0:19:16 > 0:19:19So that's what the boys are going to be doing.
0:19:19 > 0:19:22Then down this end is the adults' part of the garden.
0:19:22 > 0:19:24So, big patio area.
0:19:24 > 0:19:28Scott and Seb are really impressed with the tiles that I've chosen
0:19:28 > 0:19:30cos they are nice and small,
0:19:30 > 0:19:33which makes life really easy, doesn't it, boys?
0:19:33 > 0:19:36Yeah, look at them smiling away!
0:19:36 > 0:19:38Then we've got the raised beds.
0:19:38 > 0:19:41It's not really raised, it's just up a bit to add a bit of interest.
0:19:41 > 0:19:45I am going to also use this timber, recycle it from the decking,
0:19:45 > 0:19:50to set it slightly off of the wall because if you are digging,
0:19:50 > 0:19:53sometimes you can flick the soil up and it will bank up
0:19:53 > 0:19:56and then dampness will get in on the inside of the house
0:19:56 > 0:19:57and you really don't want that.
0:20:00 > 0:20:02To fill the new raised bed,
0:20:02 > 0:20:04Charlie will be using the soil from the old planter.
0:20:06 > 0:20:08While she gets to work on the other side of the garden,
0:20:08 > 0:20:10the boys are talking turf.
0:20:12 > 0:20:14Corrina and Richard really wanted
0:20:14 > 0:20:16to have artificial turf in their garden,
0:20:16 > 0:20:18so what we are going to do
0:20:18 > 0:20:21is we are going to create this large expanse in the back section.
0:20:21 > 0:20:24Artificial turf used to be known as that greengrocer display carpet,
0:20:24 > 0:20:25but it's got a lot, lot better.
0:20:25 > 0:20:28As you can see here, we've actually got a range of qualities.
0:20:28 > 0:20:30This is the cheaper version.
0:20:30 > 0:20:33It's definitely less thick and less dense
0:20:33 > 0:20:34and looks more artificial,
0:20:34 > 0:20:36whereas you grade up to this guy here,
0:20:36 > 0:20:38it's actually thicker, looks really real,
0:20:38 > 0:20:40you've got a variation of colours
0:20:40 > 0:20:42and actually got a little bit of thatch in there
0:20:42 > 0:20:43so it looks really, really good.
0:20:43 > 0:20:47What we are going to do is we are going to use offcuts of turf
0:20:47 > 0:20:49and when me and Harry first thought of offcuts, we thought...
0:20:49 > 0:20:52I thought we were going to get patches of this to do it!
0:20:52 > 0:20:53I thought that would be a long old day.
0:20:53 > 0:20:55But some of the offcuts are about four by four metres.
0:20:55 > 0:20:58They are huge. What that means is we are going to stretch the budget,
0:20:58 > 0:21:00it's going to go a lot further cos they are cheaper.
0:21:00 > 0:21:03But it does mean we are going to be piecing together some seams.
0:21:03 > 0:21:04- That's high-risk.- I know.
0:21:04 > 0:21:08Yeah. Charlie has entrusted us to patch this together.
0:21:09 > 0:21:11Better get a move on, then!
0:21:14 > 0:21:16But before the brothers can lay the turf,
0:21:16 > 0:21:19they need to create a solid, even surface,
0:21:19 > 0:21:21using a layer each of hardcore and sand.
0:21:28 > 0:21:31It hasn't taken Charlie long to fill the beds with soil
0:21:31 > 0:21:33and she's already moving on to planting.
0:21:33 > 0:21:35Now, this raised bed here,
0:21:35 > 0:21:38I'm just going to put a structure of planting in for Corrina,
0:21:38 > 0:21:43leaving space so the kids can do some planting as well later on.
0:21:43 > 0:21:47I'm going to have mainly herbs and aromatic plants here.
0:21:47 > 0:21:51But we've got this lovely skimmia - scented, nice evergreen,
0:21:51 > 0:21:54makes a nice round shape, you don't have to worry about clipping it.
0:21:54 > 0:21:58Cistus, which is really Mediterranean.
0:21:58 > 0:22:02The foliage is aromatic and it flowers all through the summer
0:22:02 > 0:22:03so that will be really pretty.
0:22:03 > 0:22:07This one has got white flowers with a yellow centre.
0:22:07 > 0:22:09I reckon that's about there.
0:22:09 > 0:22:10Then we've got some lavenders.
0:22:10 > 0:22:13English lavender, so it's quite loose and floppy,
0:22:13 > 0:22:16so it will flop over the sides of the raised beds
0:22:16 > 0:22:21and when they come out the door, they will get that waft of scent.
0:22:21 > 0:22:24And of course you can use the flowers when you are baking
0:22:24 > 0:22:27and it flavours the sugar.
0:22:27 > 0:22:30And then some herbs because it's really handy having herbs
0:22:30 > 0:22:31just outside the kitchen door.
0:22:31 > 0:22:36So we've got rosemary and parsley.
0:22:39 > 0:22:40Scott, it's looking lovely.
0:22:40 > 0:22:43I really like the colour. How do you think it's going?
0:22:43 > 0:22:45Well, looking at the paw print on this,
0:22:45 > 0:22:47I'd say it's going very "pawly".
0:22:47 > 0:22:49SHE LAUGHS INSINCERELY
0:22:49 > 0:22:51Don't give up the day job, will you?
0:22:51 > 0:22:52I'll keep laying tiles then, shall I?
0:22:56 > 0:22:59The first layer of the groundwork for the turf is down
0:22:59 > 0:23:02and the boys are using a wacker plate to flatten the hardcore
0:23:02 > 0:23:04before a layer of sand can be brought in.
0:23:07 > 0:23:11Charlie wants to build a custom-made sunken table,
0:23:11 > 0:23:12which will provide a useful surface
0:23:12 > 0:23:14when Richard and Corrina are entertaining.
0:23:17 > 0:23:20I'm thinking a nice chunky table,
0:23:20 > 0:23:23but actually sort of cemented into the ground.
0:23:23 > 0:23:26- Right, OK.- So that the children can't pull it over on them
0:23:26 > 0:23:29if they climb up on it and it can be used for anything.
0:23:29 > 0:23:31- OK.- I've got this recycled timber.
0:23:31 > 0:23:33- Yeah.- I've got some spare sleepers
0:23:33 > 0:23:36so I'm thinking sleepers will make the legs, four legs, unusually...
0:23:36 > 0:23:38SHE LAUGHS
0:23:38 > 0:23:42So four legs, like that, concrete is in.
0:23:42 > 0:23:45We've got four spare sleepers out the front.
0:23:45 > 0:23:46- Yeah.- So they could be the top.
0:23:46 > 0:23:48- OK.- That would make it really nice and chunky.
0:23:48 > 0:23:52So, how high is that going to make that there table?
0:23:52 > 0:23:54Well, these are 2.4s,
0:23:54 > 0:23:56so I reckon they go in the ground about a foot
0:23:56 > 0:23:59and we've got about a 3ft table. About that high.
0:23:59 > 0:24:01That's good. Just right for barbecuing.
0:24:01 > 0:24:04- And...- And a beer.- Yeah.
0:24:11 > 0:24:14Mediterranean gardens are designed to be relaxed,
0:24:14 > 0:24:16but you don't need a place in Provence
0:24:16 > 0:24:19to create the holiday atmosphere of laid-back entertaining.
0:24:19 > 0:24:23You can get the same effect in a British back yard.
0:24:23 > 0:24:25Award-winning garden designer Jack Dunckley
0:24:25 > 0:24:27has transported a slice of Tuscany
0:24:27 > 0:24:30to the middle of the Sussex countryside.
0:24:30 > 0:24:31So, what we've done here
0:24:31 > 0:24:34is we've created this amazing Tuscan courtyard garden.
0:24:34 > 0:24:36This originally used to be a car park
0:24:36 > 0:24:39and the client wanted a really sort of lovely entertaining space.
0:24:39 > 0:24:42There's lots of areas where people can mingle
0:24:42 > 0:24:44and have drinks and socialise.
0:24:44 > 0:24:47Tuscan and Mediterranean gardens have become popular
0:24:47 > 0:24:49cos people want to kind of bring a little bit of holiday home.
0:24:49 > 0:24:52It's nice to sit outside and not have to fly two hours away
0:24:52 > 0:24:54to have a bit of paradise.
0:24:54 > 0:24:58It's never been easier to create your own bit of paradise
0:24:58 > 0:25:01in your back garden and following a few simple rules
0:25:01 > 0:25:03will make it even easier.
0:25:04 > 0:25:05In Mediterranean gardens,
0:25:05 > 0:25:08the planting is secondary to the hard landscaping,
0:25:08 > 0:25:10so start with the hardware.
0:25:10 > 0:25:13Mediterranean gardens tend to have terracotta pots.
0:25:13 > 0:25:16They tend to use kind of rustic materials, stone.
0:25:16 > 0:25:19We've used compact gravel, which is a really durable surface.
0:25:19 > 0:25:22It's quite a soft, sandy colour.
0:25:22 > 0:25:24It's not loose, like ordinary shingle.
0:25:28 > 0:25:32And think about form, clean lines and structure.
0:25:32 > 0:25:35I've put in a certain amount of specimen planters.
0:25:35 > 0:25:37I've got six amazing bay standards
0:25:37 > 0:25:40that create this avenue down to the fire pit.
0:25:40 > 0:25:42I've also got quite big palm trees in terracotta pots
0:25:42 > 0:25:44to kind of give a bit of atmosphere
0:25:44 > 0:25:46around the boundary of the garden
0:25:46 > 0:25:49and also you've got the kind of undulating hills behind.
0:25:49 > 0:25:51So this kind of nestled behind the hill
0:25:51 > 0:25:54creates that really atmospheric place.
0:25:54 > 0:25:56But you don't need acres of land
0:25:56 > 0:25:58to create your own Mediterranean garden.
0:25:58 > 0:26:00It's definitely possible to create
0:26:00 > 0:26:02a Mediterranean garden in a small space.
0:26:02 > 0:26:05It's about choosing the correct materials, the right planting.
0:26:05 > 0:26:08If it is very small, then go for one specimen feature tree,
0:26:08 > 0:26:12like a palm tree or an olive in a terracotta pot.
0:26:12 > 0:26:14Nor does it have to be expensive.
0:26:14 > 0:26:17Designing and building a garden like this doesn't have to be difficult
0:26:17 > 0:26:21and you can source lots of materials at local garden centres -
0:26:21 > 0:26:24palm trees, specimen plant pots.
0:26:25 > 0:26:28Some of the materials we use here weren't overly expensive,
0:26:28 > 0:26:30but have that right look and feel.
0:26:32 > 0:26:35And Jack has a top tip for any small garden.
0:26:35 > 0:26:38If you've got a small garden and you want to make it appear bigger,
0:26:38 > 0:26:40then the best thing to do is tackle the boundaries.
0:26:40 > 0:26:42If you've got a brown enclosing fence,
0:26:42 > 0:26:45it's really kind of dark and it would be nice to lighten it up,
0:26:45 > 0:26:47put some planting on it, maybe give it a touch of paint
0:26:47 > 0:26:49to really kind of brighten up your space
0:26:49 > 0:26:50and then look at linear lines
0:26:50 > 0:26:52and the longest point of your garden,
0:26:52 > 0:26:53put a focal point in,
0:26:53 > 0:26:55cos that will draw your eye to the longest part.
0:27:00 > 0:27:03There's no time to relax back in the garden, though.
0:27:03 > 0:27:07Charlie's asked the brothers to pot up some of her Mediterranean plants.
0:27:07 > 0:27:10As nothing in this garden is going to waste,
0:27:10 > 0:27:14Harry is taking some of the tile cut-offs to aid him in his task.
0:27:16 > 0:27:20Charlie wanted to use these twisted stem olives in her design
0:27:20 > 0:27:22and they really do depict the Mediterranean.
0:27:22 > 0:27:24Growing in the wild, they need free draining soil
0:27:24 > 0:27:27and that's what I want to replicate now in this pot.
0:27:27 > 0:27:29To start with, I'm just going to put a bottom layer
0:27:29 > 0:27:32of these broken-up slabs. They are from the garden
0:27:32 > 0:27:33so we are recycling them.
0:27:34 > 0:27:37Because olive trees need free draining soil
0:27:37 > 0:27:38if they are going to thrive,
0:27:38 > 0:27:40placing the tiles in the bottom of the pot
0:27:40 > 0:27:43will help any excess water to drain more freely.
0:27:45 > 0:27:46And then all I'm going to do now
0:27:46 > 0:27:49is I'm going to add some soil into the pot,
0:27:49 > 0:27:52some leftover gravel from the garden.
0:27:52 > 0:27:54Mix it in.
0:27:54 > 0:27:59So it really depicts the kind of conditions of the Mediterranean.
0:28:01 > 0:28:03The only thing left to do now is plant the olive tree.
0:28:07 > 0:28:10In the garden, Charlie is making a statement.
0:28:13 > 0:28:16First big statement plant coming through.
0:28:20 > 0:28:24So I'm thinking about here-ish, I think, that's going to be.
0:28:26 > 0:28:29Wow! Beautiful.
0:28:29 > 0:28:32Outside, David is getting in on the Mediterranean action.
0:28:33 > 0:28:36The bay tree is another great Mediterranean plant.
0:28:36 > 0:28:39Really versatile and you can shape it into almost any object.
0:28:39 > 0:28:42You can make it into, like, balls, pyramids, lollipops.
0:28:42 > 0:28:44And you can use the leaves in cooking,
0:28:44 > 0:28:46which is really cool, in loads of dishes.
0:28:46 > 0:28:48We are actually going to plait the stems,
0:28:48 > 0:28:50but we are still going to create that lollipop shape on top.
0:28:50 > 0:28:53So we are going to remove some of these stems and just leave three.
0:28:54 > 0:28:56There's no going back after this!
0:28:56 > 0:28:58Perfect!
0:29:06 > 0:29:08Cool!
0:29:08 > 0:29:11And what I've got to do now is just chop off the top,
0:29:11 > 0:29:13just to encourage the outward growth.
0:29:16 > 0:29:18- Right, all done.- Looks good, Dave.
0:29:18 > 0:29:20Cheers! Thank you.
0:29:21 > 0:29:24Charlie and Scott are marking out the planting borders
0:29:24 > 0:29:27that will separate the patio and turf areas of the garden.
0:29:27 > 0:29:29Just come out another foot.
0:29:29 > 0:29:32And she's had a thrifty idea.
0:29:32 > 0:29:34Entranceway.
0:29:34 > 0:29:37She's going to bring the pergola that Richard and Corrina have
0:29:37 > 0:29:40into the front of the garden and use it as an entranceway
0:29:40 > 0:29:42between the children's and adults' areas.
0:29:43 > 0:29:45David and Harry have turned their attention
0:29:45 > 0:29:48back to the artificial lawn and are levelling out the sand
0:29:48 > 0:29:50before laying a membrane
0:29:50 > 0:29:53to suppress any weeds that may try to sprout up.
0:30:00 > 0:30:03While Charlie is thinking about childproof planting,
0:30:03 > 0:30:05kicking off with a spotted laurel.
0:30:05 > 0:30:09It is a really robust useful plant, evergreen,
0:30:09 > 0:30:13it will take being in shade, in dry conditions,
0:30:13 > 0:30:18and when the football comes hurtling this way, it will put up with it.
0:30:18 > 0:30:21The other great thing about having plants as a barrier
0:30:21 > 0:30:24is they actually absorb sound.
0:30:24 > 0:30:27You are better off having a hedge of plants
0:30:27 > 0:30:29than you are a brick wall or a fence.
0:30:29 > 0:30:33So it will make it quieter and dampen the sound down,
0:30:33 > 0:30:36which is what you will always need when it comes to young children.
0:30:36 > 0:30:40Charlie is also emphasising the Mediterranean theme
0:30:40 > 0:30:42with her other shrubs and trees.
0:30:42 > 0:30:45So, this is going to be an evergreen shrub border
0:30:45 > 0:30:49and I've gone for a contrast of textures and shapes.
0:30:49 > 0:30:53We've got the round box balls
0:30:53 > 0:30:56that contrast with the spiky leaves of the phormium
0:30:56 > 0:30:59and then my favourite, pencil cypress,
0:30:59 > 0:31:01Cupressus sempervirens,
0:31:01 > 0:31:03which means "forever green",
0:31:03 > 0:31:07and they are these tall, upright columns of foliage.
0:31:07 > 0:31:11When you see them growing around the lakes of Italy,
0:31:11 > 0:31:15they do actually clip them so that they get really neat
0:31:15 > 0:31:17and compact all the way up.
0:31:17 > 0:31:20But that is going to basically end up
0:31:20 > 0:31:23as a really textured evergreen hedge border,
0:31:23 > 0:31:27which will look good all year round.
0:31:27 > 0:31:31I have gone for threes with the Cupressus sempervirens.
0:31:31 > 0:31:33Always a good thing to arrange in threes.
0:31:33 > 0:31:38Having said that, I've been a bit radical and gone for a two.
0:31:38 > 0:31:40That can sometimes work as well.
0:31:41 > 0:31:43There are lots of other plants that work well
0:31:43 > 0:31:48to create that warm Mediterranean look all year round,
0:31:48 > 0:31:51But that can also cope with our rather colder,
0:31:51 > 0:31:55wetter British climate without needing a lot of fuss.
0:31:56 > 0:31:59The plants we've got here are very kind of drought resistant.
0:31:59 > 0:32:01They don't need to be watered that much.
0:32:01 > 0:32:03In the summer, this garden completely comes to life
0:32:03 > 0:32:06and you've got lots of amazing purples.
0:32:06 > 0:32:08There's grasses and you are going to have
0:32:08 > 0:32:10sort of movement of the grasses in the wind.
0:32:11 > 0:32:15As you can see behind, we've got these amazing line of cypresses.
0:32:15 > 0:32:18You can source these trees in England,
0:32:18 > 0:32:21but we decided for that extra kind of Tuscan feel,
0:32:21 > 0:32:23we'd go out to Italy and source them.
0:32:23 > 0:32:27Herbs play an important role in Mediterranean planting.
0:32:27 > 0:32:31They are handy to have for the barbecue and alfresco dining
0:32:31 > 0:32:35and will provide a lovely aroma on hot summer days.
0:32:35 > 0:32:37You've got rosemary, you've got lavender,
0:32:37 > 0:32:39you've got the olive trees as well
0:32:39 > 0:32:41that kind of give that lovely kind of silvery foliage to it.
0:32:42 > 0:32:46When you've had a busy day at work, coming back to this garden
0:32:46 > 0:32:48instantly creates that relaxing, tranquil effect.
0:32:53 > 0:32:54Fingers crossed!
0:32:59 > 0:33:01Not bad. Looking green, that's a good start!
0:33:01 > 0:33:03After all that preparation,
0:33:03 > 0:33:08the boys are finally rolling out the larger of the two turf offcuts.
0:33:08 > 0:33:10They make sure it's in the correct position...
0:33:10 > 0:33:12I need to come this way.
0:33:12 > 0:33:14..then cut the edges to fit.
0:33:14 > 0:33:17Perfect! So, that's the turf cut now, up against the edging.
0:33:17 > 0:33:20All we need to do is tack it in, nice and firm.
0:33:24 > 0:33:27Charlie is planting up her final bed.
0:33:28 > 0:33:32This border here, we are going to have lots of evergreens again
0:33:32 > 0:33:35so they stand out against these beautiful walls.
0:33:35 > 0:33:39Phormium tenax Variegatum - tenax means "tough"
0:33:39 > 0:33:43and if you've ever tried to pull a dead phormium leaf off,
0:33:43 > 0:33:46you'll know why it's tough.
0:33:46 > 0:33:50Then we've got fatsia, which have got these big palm, glossy leaves.
0:33:50 > 0:33:52They are going to get about this big.
0:33:52 > 0:33:55Then we've got the box balls to pick up those box balls
0:33:55 > 0:33:58and then a bit of colour with the cistus.
0:33:58 > 0:34:02Corrina and Richard wanted low-maintenance and, literally,
0:34:02 > 0:34:06there is nothing to do to these plants at all.
0:34:06 > 0:34:08So they can just leave them to grow
0:34:08 > 0:34:11and that will just give it a nice interest on this wall
0:34:11 > 0:34:15and I've got a few little ideas for this section
0:34:15 > 0:34:18to make it a real focal point, looking out from the kitchen.
0:34:22 > 0:34:26David and Harry cut the second offcut of turf to size.
0:34:29 > 0:34:31Yeah, nice fold!
0:34:33 > 0:34:35A bit more than you think.
0:34:37 > 0:34:39And then carefully use a special glue
0:34:39 > 0:34:41to join the two different pieces together,
0:34:41 > 0:34:45making the match-up between the two as seamless as possible.
0:34:49 > 0:34:50As a finishing touch,
0:34:50 > 0:34:54the brothers rake the artificial turf to further disguise the join
0:34:54 > 0:34:57and a quick brush makes our penny-wise lawn
0:34:57 > 0:34:59look fuller and more natural.
0:34:59 > 0:35:01- How does it feel?- It's great!
0:35:01 > 0:35:04I love the way you've brought out the texture of my planting
0:35:04 > 0:35:07- by making it all shaggy. - Yeah, all planned.
0:35:07 > 0:35:10- Yeah, right. - All part of the master plan.
0:35:10 > 0:35:12But it is worth it. Definitely worth it
0:35:12 > 0:35:13and it's a great area for the children.
0:35:13 > 0:35:15- So much bigger now.- Versatile.
0:35:15 > 0:35:18- Green.- Green. Low-maintenance.
0:35:18 > 0:35:20Do you think she's got to hoover it occasionally?
0:35:20 > 0:35:22- Or brush it.- Brush it. - I'm enjoying this.
0:35:22 > 0:35:24Doesn't it does make a difference? Look at that.
0:35:24 > 0:35:26Well, don't spend too long doing this
0:35:26 > 0:35:29cos I've got another little job for you, I have to say.
0:35:29 > 0:35:30But you'll soon be done.
0:35:30 > 0:35:32So, just here.
0:35:32 > 0:35:33- Yeah.- Yes.- You know,
0:35:33 > 0:35:36the archway out the front that looks like it's landed...
0:35:36 > 0:35:37- Yes.- Just there.
0:35:37 > 0:35:39- Shall we get the archway?- Yeah.
0:35:39 > 0:35:43While the boys fetch the old pergola from the front garden,
0:35:43 > 0:35:46Charlie is attaching planting baskets to the wall.
0:35:49 > 0:35:52This wall is a lovely wall, but it's a bit dominant in the garden,
0:35:52 > 0:35:54so I want to break up the space with some planting
0:35:54 > 0:35:59and walls are a great vertical space for extra plants.
0:35:59 > 0:36:01Now, these are really good value hanging baskets,
0:36:01 > 0:36:03just little wicker ones,
0:36:03 > 0:36:07and because I am not convinced that Corrina and Richard
0:36:07 > 0:36:09will look after them really well,
0:36:09 > 0:36:11I've gone for plants that are going to be tolerant
0:36:11 > 0:36:13of a little neglect, shall we say?
0:36:13 > 0:36:17So I've got things like sedum, which is a succulent.
0:36:17 > 0:36:20We've got mat-forming ajuga and some grasses.
0:36:20 > 0:36:25Ivy... They will all put up with maybe drying out fractionally.
0:36:25 > 0:36:27And I'm putting them in diagonals
0:36:27 > 0:36:31to pick up the whole diagonal design of the garden
0:36:31 > 0:36:36and it should really sort of break the wall up nicely.
0:36:36 > 0:36:40And to get some continuity with the planting,
0:36:40 > 0:36:45I've done the same type of planting here on these three...
0:36:46 > 0:36:49Like that, so you see, exactly the same.
0:36:49 > 0:36:50And then...
0:36:52 > 0:36:55..I'm then using the same planting in the other three.
0:36:56 > 0:36:59Just about the right height to water.
0:36:59 > 0:37:01And the last one up there.
0:37:02 > 0:37:05I think that looks lovely. Really breaks the wall up.
0:37:05 > 0:37:07And the maintenance should be reasonably OK.
0:37:09 > 0:37:10With the wall planters hung,
0:37:10 > 0:37:13it's time to put the finishing touches in place...
0:37:15 > 0:37:20..before Richard and Corrina see their new garden for the first time.
0:37:20 > 0:37:22A beast of a table.
0:37:22 > 0:37:24Walk her in.
0:37:26 > 0:37:27Are you in?
0:37:27 > 0:37:29Perfect!
0:37:33 > 0:37:35- Nice!- Locked in.
0:37:45 > 0:37:47- Last one.- Last tile going down.
0:37:47 > 0:37:50- Oh, beauty.- Beauty.
0:37:50 > 0:37:52Look at that.
0:37:55 > 0:37:58Before they called Charlie and the Rich brothers,
0:37:58 > 0:38:01Corrina and Richard's garden was one big trip hazard...
0:38:03 > 0:38:08..with a jumble of different levels, surfaces and materials.
0:38:12 > 0:38:18Now, with a £3,000 revamp, the chaos has been swept away
0:38:18 > 0:38:21and the garden feels much larger and less cluttered.
0:38:24 > 0:38:28The spacious terracotta patio is the perfect place for a party
0:38:28 > 0:38:30and cost £280.
0:38:33 > 0:38:38They even have their own custom-built bar, which cost £36.
0:38:43 > 0:38:47The easy to maintain wall planters brighten up the end of the garden
0:38:47 > 0:38:49and cost only £92.
0:38:51 > 0:38:54While the olive and bay trees add a flavour of the Mediterranean
0:38:54 > 0:38:57at a cost of £130.
0:38:58 > 0:39:02The terracotta pots continue the theme and cost £200.
0:39:05 > 0:39:07As does the sound deflecting planting bed,
0:39:07 > 0:39:09featuring the cypress trees,
0:39:09 > 0:39:11each costing £35.
0:39:12 > 0:39:16The pergola was moved free of charge from the front garden
0:39:16 > 0:39:20and the arbour has been repositioned and given a £22 lick of paint.
0:39:23 > 0:39:27And finally, Ronnie and his siblings can run around safely
0:39:27 > 0:39:29on their level crease-free artificial lawn...
0:39:32 > 0:39:34..which cost a total of £510.
0:39:36 > 0:39:40Richard and Corrina spent three years hating their old garden.
0:39:40 > 0:39:43Can Charlie make them fall in love with their new one?
0:39:47 > 0:39:49Close your eyes.
0:39:49 > 0:39:51We are going to step down...
0:39:51 > 0:39:53Yeah? That's one step.
0:39:53 > 0:39:56- Two steps...- Tickly under there?
0:39:56 > 0:39:58Go forward a bit. It's all right,
0:39:58 > 0:40:00- you're not going to fall off an abyss, I promise.- OK.
0:40:00 > 0:40:02I'm so excited.
0:40:02 > 0:40:04OK? You can open your eyes.
0:40:06 > 0:40:08Oh, my God!
0:40:08 > 0:40:10Oh, my God!
0:40:11 > 0:40:14- Oh, my God!- So, does that view say to you,
0:40:14 > 0:40:16"I want to come out into the garden"?
0:40:16 > 0:40:19- Definitely.- I don't think we could live inside.
0:40:19 > 0:40:21I think we just live out here. It's so beautiful.
0:40:21 > 0:40:23It's totally transformed.
0:40:23 > 0:40:25- It's amazing.- It is amazing.
0:40:25 > 0:40:28- Hey, they love it.- They love it.
0:40:28 > 0:40:30- Some good first impressions. - It is, yeah.
0:40:30 > 0:40:31I mean, having that patio out on the front
0:40:31 > 0:40:33- makes such a difference, doesn't it?- Yeah.
0:40:33 > 0:40:37Do you think it is going to be a big enough area
0:40:37 > 0:40:39for you to entertain friends and family?
0:40:39 > 0:40:40I think so, don't you?
0:40:40 > 0:40:43- It's massive. It's amazing! - We could have a party.
0:40:43 > 0:40:45I think they'll use that space a lot for entertaining.
0:40:45 > 0:40:46Yeah, they seem like the party type.
0:40:46 > 0:40:48They do, don't they? Yeah!
0:40:48 > 0:40:50Is it actually our garden?
0:40:50 > 0:40:53- You are not going to be ill on me, are you?- No.
0:40:53 > 0:40:55Sorry, I just love it.
0:40:55 > 0:40:57It's going to look great all year round
