0:00:02 > 0:00:03With her can-do attitude,
0:00:03 > 0:00:06love of simple gardens, and decades of experience,
0:00:06 > 0:00:09Charlie Dimmock is one of Britain's best-loved gardeners.
0:00:09 > 0:00:11Looking good, boys!
0:00:11 > 0:00:15But the new kids on the gardening block are the Rich brothers.
0:00:15 > 0:00:16We want to be the brothers
0:00:16 > 0:00:19that change people's perceptions of gardens.
0:00:19 > 0:00:22Winners of multiple medals at the Chelsea Flower Show...
0:00:22 > 0:00:24- Wow!- Oh, good turn. - Amazing, isn't it?
0:00:24 > 0:00:28..the boys have become known for their dramatic outdoor spaces.
0:00:29 > 0:00:34Now, these two different generations of gardening are going head-to-head.
0:00:34 > 0:00:38I know they've got a gold medal, but I can come up with a few ideas.
0:00:38 > 0:00:42They're meeting frustrated garden owners across the country...
0:00:42 > 0:00:44Not a lot going on, is there?
0:00:44 > 0:00:46- Not a lot! - I don't know what to do with it.
0:00:46 > 0:00:49..and will each pitch them a design based on their needs...
0:00:49 > 0:00:51- You look confused. - I am. Go for it.
0:00:51 > 0:00:53..and budget.
0:00:53 > 0:00:54Doesn't look like it could be our garden.
0:00:54 > 0:00:55The winner...
0:00:55 > 0:00:58- Yay!- Charlie! - Yeah, awesome.
0:00:58 > 0:01:00..brings their design to life.
0:01:00 > 0:01:02- Hold on, hold on! - Sweet as a nut.
0:01:02 > 0:01:04And the loser has to help them build it.
0:01:04 > 0:01:07Keep working, keep working, boy!
0:01:07 > 0:01:09Whoa, whoa, whoa! Easy.
0:01:09 > 0:01:10This is what happens...
0:01:10 > 0:01:13Just get on with it! Some time today would be good!
0:01:13 > 0:01:16..when different styles collide...
0:01:16 > 0:01:18I think your brother's throwing the toys out of his pram.
0:01:18 > 0:01:19Right, are we doing this?
0:01:19 > 0:01:23..to turn garden dreams into reality.
0:01:23 > 0:01:24Wow, oh!
0:01:24 > 0:01:27Oh, my goodness!
0:01:27 > 0:01:29- Wow. - Look at that.
0:01:29 > 0:01:33- Oh, my God. Wow.- Wow.
0:01:38 > 0:01:42It's time for Charlie and the Rich brothers to find out which garden
0:01:42 > 0:01:44they're going to compete over today.
0:01:45 > 0:01:46This is David and Simon,
0:01:46 > 0:01:49and they live in a mid-terraced cottage in Sussex.
0:01:49 > 0:01:51The garden's very much David's baby,
0:01:51 > 0:01:53but he just doesn't know what to do with it.
0:01:53 > 0:01:56- There's lots of lovely plants. - Mm.- Yeah.
0:01:58 > 0:02:01Technical manager David has always enjoyed growing vegetables,
0:02:01 > 0:02:04but has recently discovered a passion for all plants and,
0:02:04 > 0:02:09while benefits officer Simon is happy to indulge David's new hobby,
0:02:09 > 0:02:11he's not quite as enthusiastic himself.
0:02:11 > 0:02:15No, just not the end bits, just there.
0:02:15 > 0:02:18I gained an interest in flowers when we got our own garden,
0:02:18 > 0:02:21and realised I had a lot to learn.
0:02:21 > 0:02:23So, I had to do a lot of research.
0:02:23 > 0:02:26And then I'd buy you a new plant each weekend just to keep you happy.
0:02:26 > 0:02:28Yeah, yeah, yeah.
0:02:30 > 0:02:33I've filled my garden with flowers. It looks really pretty.
0:02:33 > 0:02:36- It does.- But, at the moment, the way I've got it designed is a bit '70s.
0:02:36 > 0:02:39A border of flowers, a strip of lawn, a path,
0:02:39 > 0:02:43straight line to greenhouse. Which is fine for me, really.
0:02:43 > 0:02:46- Yeah. I wouldn't go down there. - No, why would you?
0:02:46 > 0:02:47THEY LAUGH
0:02:47 > 0:02:48The garden looks quite narrow.
0:02:48 > 0:02:51I think that's what they might be having trouble with,
0:02:51 > 0:02:54it's very long, very thin, and they maybe don't know how to break it up.
0:02:54 > 0:02:56Exactly. It's adding to what's there,
0:02:56 > 0:02:59and it's giving it a bit of structure more than anything.
0:03:00 > 0:03:03I'm just frustrated at the moment with the garden
0:03:03 > 0:03:05because I'm not sure now where to take it.
0:03:05 > 0:03:08- It's the next step, I guess. - Yeah, yeah.
0:03:08 > 0:03:10To make us truly happy with it.
0:03:10 > 0:03:12To ensure David gets the garden of his dreams,
0:03:12 > 0:03:14the couple are prepared to make a big investment,
0:03:14 > 0:03:19and have given the designers a budget of £5,000.
0:03:19 > 0:03:21With Charlie and the Rich brothers each hoping to win the contract,
0:03:21 > 0:03:26they head to West Sussex to see the garden for themselves.
0:03:26 > 0:03:27Oh, wow!
0:03:27 > 0:03:28- Look at this.- Wow.
0:03:28 > 0:03:30- Isn't it beautiful?- Yes.
0:03:30 > 0:03:32They don't need a Garden Rescue, do they?
0:03:32 > 0:03:34I know. I'll have this one, I'll take it home now!
0:03:34 > 0:03:37Look at the plants. Hellebores, fritillaries,
0:03:37 > 0:03:40they're not the easiest thing in the world to grow.
0:03:40 > 0:03:42- And everything's got labels on. - I know, I know.
0:03:42 > 0:03:45It looks beautiful but it does need a little bit of a rejig.
0:03:45 > 0:03:47- Yeah.- When you have long, narrow gardens like this,
0:03:47 > 0:03:49it does draw your eye right down to the bottom.
0:03:49 > 0:03:52It's quite nice to section them off a little bit, isn't it?
0:03:52 > 0:03:54Yeah, at the moment, you can see everything, why go to the bottom?
0:03:54 > 0:03:57Pretty cool greenhouse, isn't it? I mean, that is my favourite.
0:03:57 > 0:04:00A lot going for this garden. It might be small...
0:04:00 > 0:04:02- The opportunities are endless. - Endless.
0:04:02 > 0:04:06Ooh! Getting excited already.
0:04:06 > 0:04:09It's unusual for the designers to have such a solid foundation
0:04:09 > 0:04:12to start from, and they're eager to find out more.
0:04:12 > 0:04:16So, David and Harry head inside for a poke around.
0:04:17 > 0:04:19Oh, it's really cosy in here, isn't it?
0:04:19 > 0:04:21It's gorgeous. Got a really lovely feeling.
0:04:21 > 0:04:24I think, being outside, it felt quite open, didn't it?
0:04:24 > 0:04:27So, try and recreate this cosiness in the garden, it'll be really cool.
0:04:27 > 0:04:30And I think having wooden floors, as well, adds to that cosiness.
0:04:30 > 0:04:33It's a lovely warming colour, nice texture.
0:04:33 > 0:04:36Yeah, definitely. They've got it outside, they clearly like it.
0:04:36 > 0:04:38Maybe using a bit more of it would be really cool.
0:04:38 > 0:04:42Charlie meets David and Simon to see what ideas they have for the garden.
0:04:42 > 0:04:43David and Simon.
0:04:43 > 0:04:46- Hello.- What a sweet garden! - I know. We love it,
0:04:46 > 0:04:49and we have spent, well, I've spent a lot of time, actually,
0:04:49 > 0:04:52- looking after it, and tending to my plants.- Yeah.
0:04:52 > 0:04:55- Are you into the garden as well? - I'm going to be honest, it's a no!
0:04:55 > 0:04:56THEY LAUGH
0:04:56 > 0:04:59I love sitting out here, in the summer, especially, with a drink.
0:04:59 > 0:05:01But, when you sit there, as beautiful as it looks,
0:05:01 > 0:05:05you're drawn to the greenhouse, and there's nothing to make you think,
0:05:05 > 0:05:07- ooh, what's down there?- Right.
0:05:07 > 0:05:11So, what would you like to draw you down the garden?
0:05:11 > 0:05:15I was thinking, maybe, a windy path, or a secret seating area.
0:05:15 > 0:05:17So that you've got two entertainment areas?
0:05:17 > 0:05:21- Yes.- Yes.- That gets the sun there in the mornings.
0:05:21 > 0:05:23So we'd like to keep a seating area out there, yes.
0:05:25 > 0:05:27Look at all the lights, as well.
0:05:27 > 0:05:30Around the mirror, you've got one on the shelf, lamp beside the sofa.
0:05:30 > 0:05:32It could be a little hint.
0:05:32 > 0:05:35They also love their flowers. We've got some cut flowers here.
0:05:35 > 0:05:38Tulips. They've clearly got a really big passion with plants.
0:05:38 > 0:05:41So, let's not forget them.
0:05:41 > 0:05:44So, are there any plants, colour-wise, you like?
0:05:44 > 0:05:47I personally love things that are quite cottage garden, so,
0:05:47 > 0:05:51I love foxgloves, I love penstemons.
0:05:51 > 0:05:53So, it would be nice to fill the garden with flowers,
0:05:53 > 0:05:55and I don't mind spending time looking after them.
0:05:55 > 0:05:57Oh, that's fantastic!
0:05:57 > 0:06:00And the lawn, that's in really good condition.
0:06:00 > 0:06:02- Yes.- Do you want a lawn? Because it is quite a small garden.
0:06:02 > 0:06:04I'm not that fussy, actually, about having a lawn.
0:06:04 > 0:06:08- But I think...- I would like, even a tiny part would be nice.
0:06:08 > 0:06:10- OK.- We'll see.
0:06:10 > 0:06:13We'll see! Oh, I don't want to cause a domestic here.
0:06:13 > 0:06:15So, maybe lawn, maybe not.
0:06:15 > 0:06:18Are there any bits of the garden that you really don't like?
0:06:18 > 0:06:20The main thing is the fences.
0:06:20 > 0:06:23As you can see, they're all scruffy, they're uneven.
0:06:23 > 0:06:27Anything we could do with the borders would be fantastic.
0:06:27 > 0:06:30While the fences are in need of some attention,
0:06:30 > 0:06:32the greenhouse is a key amenity for David,
0:06:32 > 0:06:35and the couple would prefer to keep it.
0:06:35 > 0:06:38With a green-fingered client, and a healthy £5,000 budget,
0:06:38 > 0:06:41Charlie and the Rich brothers can really go to town.
0:06:43 > 0:06:46So, they head to their drawing boards
0:06:46 > 0:06:48where each of them will come up with a design that will make
0:06:48 > 0:06:51the most of David and Simon's narrow garden.
0:06:52 > 0:06:55The couple will then have to choose a winning design,
0:06:55 > 0:06:58and the loser will help the winner build the garden.
0:06:59 > 0:07:02Their £5,000 will be used to cover the cost of the materials
0:07:02 > 0:07:05while the labour will be supplied by Charlie,
0:07:05 > 0:07:08the Rich brothers and their team of landscapers.
0:07:13 > 0:07:16It's time for the designers to pitch their ideas.
0:07:18 > 0:07:20Oh, my God.
0:07:20 > 0:07:24I'm hoping that my garden design takes you on a journey
0:07:24 > 0:07:27all the way to the bottom of the garden,
0:07:27 > 0:07:31using every tiny bit of space that there is.
0:07:31 > 0:07:37So, gone is the deck area up there, but I have kept a seating area,
0:07:37 > 0:07:42and I've gone with some really lovely bespoke sandstone,
0:07:42 > 0:07:47a circle of it, and it's edged with a very small, simple pool,
0:07:47 > 0:07:49with some moving water in it.
0:07:49 > 0:07:52And then a cedar deck that's just slightly higher up.
0:07:52 > 0:07:55So, this will be quite a big entertaining area.
0:07:55 > 0:07:59And then heavily planted, to make an enclosed space,
0:07:59 > 0:08:03so you don't see the whole garden all at once
0:08:03 > 0:08:06- when you come out of the back door. - Yep.- Yeah, yeah, absolutely.
0:08:08 > 0:08:12Charlie has gone straight in with the wow factor of a water feature.
0:08:12 > 0:08:15The Rich brothers are going to have to work hard from the get-go
0:08:15 > 0:08:16to beat that.
0:08:16 > 0:08:18So, here is our design.
0:08:18 > 0:08:20Oh.
0:08:20 > 0:08:22We wanted to give you a garden that had a lot of structure to it,
0:08:22 > 0:08:24that was broken down into rooms,
0:08:24 > 0:08:27and had some really elegant layers of planting.
0:08:27 > 0:08:30- It looks amazing.- Yeah. - It looks amazing.
0:08:30 > 0:08:33You've obviously got your deck there which you love and you use.
0:08:33 > 0:08:36- Yeah.- But it looks a bit worn. So, what we'd like to do is replace it,
0:08:36 > 0:08:38and pull up the whole width of the garden,
0:08:38 > 0:08:41- so you're really utilising that space.- Yeah, yeah, brilliant.
0:08:41 > 0:08:43And you've got a lovely pocket of planting,
0:08:43 > 0:08:46so that this whole garden is not all revealed at once.
0:08:46 > 0:08:48- Brilliant. - SIMON:- Yeah.
0:08:48 > 0:08:51So, it's a simple no-frills approach from Harry and David
0:08:51 > 0:08:53for the seating area at the top.
0:08:53 > 0:08:55But how will the designers entice the couple down
0:08:55 > 0:08:58to the bottom of the garden?
0:08:58 > 0:09:02So, I've got this curving path that runs off of the paving,
0:09:02 > 0:09:06around the middle part of the garden.
0:09:06 > 0:09:08Keeping quite a bit of the lawn.
0:09:08 > 0:09:10Ah, someone will be happy.
0:09:10 > 0:09:14For me, a lawn is a really nice foil for showing off plants.
0:09:14 > 0:09:16But, as you traverse down,
0:09:16 > 0:09:19you'll find that you'll find secret little pockets.
0:09:19 > 0:09:24So, this is one single little seat that's enclosed in planting.
0:09:24 > 0:09:27- Amazing. - SIMON:- Wow.
0:09:27 > 0:09:29As you pass through, you go into his open lawn.
0:09:29 > 0:09:32And we've got these slabs, that creates this lovely passage.
0:09:32 > 0:09:35- Wow.- And that then leads down on to this main path here.
0:09:35 > 0:09:38At the moment, planting beds on the outside.
0:09:38 > 0:09:40So, what we wanted to make sure is we drag this planting bed
0:09:40 > 0:09:43into the garden, so you've really got a journey through it,
0:09:43 > 0:09:44and experience the trees.
0:09:44 > 0:09:47- I see you've got a lovely cherry at the moment.- Yeah.- Gorgeous.
0:09:47 > 0:09:50So, we wanted to bring in a few more of those.
0:09:50 > 0:09:52- Wow.- And within this large planting bed, obviously,
0:09:52 > 0:09:56we'd love to keep as many plants as possible because we know
0:09:56 > 0:09:58- you're very passionate about them. - Yeah.
0:09:58 > 0:10:00But we'd like to introduce plants that we know would give longevity
0:10:00 > 0:10:02throughout the year.
0:10:02 > 0:10:04Are you planning to do anything with the boundary fences?
0:10:04 > 0:10:07- At the moment, they're a bit tatty. - We're thinking of painting them,
0:10:07 > 0:10:10maybe, a dark grey fence will really highlight the green foliage
0:10:10 > 0:10:12- of the trees and shrubs.- Wow.
0:10:12 > 0:10:15The Rich brothers seem to be ticking a lot of
0:10:15 > 0:10:18boxes by using cherry trees to break up the view,
0:10:18 > 0:10:23sorting out the mismatched fence, and reusing David's beloved plants.
0:10:23 > 0:10:26Can Charlie rise to the challenge?
0:10:27 > 0:10:30Now, you've got some lovely plants here,
0:10:30 > 0:10:33but what I feel that is missing is a bit of structure with shrubs.
0:10:33 > 0:10:35- Yep.- And I want to give you some of that structure,
0:10:35 > 0:10:39and then have all your lovely, glamorous,
0:10:39 > 0:10:42herbaceous plants mixed in.
0:10:42 > 0:10:45And then, because you've got so much fence space,
0:10:45 > 0:10:48which is a great vertical space to use,
0:10:48 > 0:10:53lots of different climbers that might require a bit of work to them.
0:10:53 > 0:10:57So, different clematis, maybe honeysuckles,
0:10:57 > 0:11:00just to cover all of the fence space.
0:11:00 > 0:11:03- SIMON:- Wow. - Amazing.
0:11:03 > 0:11:06Charlie is really appealing to David's love of plants.
0:11:06 > 0:11:09But both designs seem to be going down well with the couple.
0:11:09 > 0:11:12Will the all-important plan for the bottom of the garden
0:11:12 > 0:11:14be the deal-breaker?
0:11:15 > 0:11:19As you travel through this space, you come to this back seating area,
0:11:19 > 0:11:22and you're surrounded by shrubs and trees and plants,
0:11:22 > 0:11:26and it gives a completely different atmosphere to the front area.
0:11:26 > 0:11:28The key about this garden is that, if you first turn up here,
0:11:28 > 0:11:30- you don't know that back area is there.- Yeah.
0:11:30 > 0:11:34It's about intrigue, about finding this little seating space.
0:11:34 > 0:11:36Quite secret, quite romantic, quite soft.
0:11:36 > 0:11:38Yeah. That's the sort of thing we want.
0:11:38 > 0:11:41- And we'd like to introduce a bit of lighting in here as well.- Oh!
0:11:41 > 0:11:44With all the trees and shrubs, it'll subtly highlight the trunks,
0:11:44 > 0:11:45a little bit of the canopy.
0:11:45 > 0:11:47And when you're sitting down there in the evening,
0:11:47 > 0:11:50it's going to be a really special place.
0:11:50 > 0:11:52- Sounds amazing. - SIMON:- Yeah.
0:11:52 > 0:11:57So, the path sweeps on round through this moon gate which is timber,
0:11:57 > 0:11:59with climbers hanging over.
0:11:59 > 0:12:01- Wow.- Amazing.
0:12:01 > 0:12:03Then, once we go through that,
0:12:03 > 0:12:06we go into a much more natural feel to the garden.
0:12:06 > 0:12:07So, this is a secret little garden
0:12:07 > 0:12:10that's enclosed with a little gateway.
0:12:10 > 0:12:13It's going to be very "Dingly Dell",
0:12:13 > 0:12:15woodlandy, secret garden down at the bottom.
0:12:15 > 0:12:18- That sounds fabulous. - Yes. That really does.
0:12:18 > 0:12:21Both designers have really pulled out the stops,
0:12:21 > 0:12:24and David and Simon are delighted with both designs.
0:12:24 > 0:12:30But they can only choose one, so, which will it be?
0:12:30 > 0:12:33This is going to be a very difficult decision because...
0:12:33 > 0:12:34Yeah. I love them both.
0:12:34 > 0:12:37Charlie, I don't know about you, but we actually got
0:12:37 > 0:12:38a really positive response from them.
0:12:38 > 0:12:40I kind of think that could be quite a good thing.
0:12:40 > 0:12:45OK, yeah, they were quite vocal with me as well, I have to say.
0:12:45 > 0:12:48- So, Charlie's design. - It's so different.
0:12:48 > 0:12:50I've never seen anything like that in a garden.
0:12:50 > 0:12:52I can't believe she's incorporated a pond.
0:12:52 > 0:12:56- I mean, that would be absolutely stunning.- Yeah.
0:12:56 > 0:12:59- Do you have a pond? - No.- No.- Ooh!
0:12:59 > 0:13:01- Have you got a pond? - I've got a pond.
0:13:01 > 0:13:05For me, water in the garden just adds that final dimension.
0:13:05 > 0:13:07Yeah. I love the way they've got the two seating areas.
0:13:07 > 0:13:11And they also said that they're going to have lighting.
0:13:11 > 0:13:13Ooh, how about lighting?
0:13:13 > 0:13:17- No.- Ooh.- We have lighting. That could be the clincher, I reckon.
0:13:17 > 0:13:20For us, lighting adds that final dimension!
0:13:20 > 0:13:21CHARLIE LAUGHS
0:13:21 > 0:13:23I don't know how we're going to decide this.
0:13:23 > 0:13:26I don't know. I really don't.
0:13:26 > 0:13:30Will David and Simon choose Charlie's tiered entertainment space
0:13:30 > 0:13:35with in-built pond, curved path, secret seating area and moon gate?
0:13:36 > 0:13:39Or will they go for the Rich brothers' understated design
0:13:39 > 0:13:43that integrates David's existing plants with sleek new paving,
0:13:43 > 0:13:46cherry trees, outdoor lighting
0:13:46 > 0:13:49and decked seating area at the bottom of the garden?
0:13:50 > 0:13:52It's time to decide.
0:13:52 > 0:13:54- Hello!- Hi.
0:13:55 > 0:13:59- It's been the most difficult decision ever.- It really has.
0:13:59 > 0:14:02We've loved both designs for different reasons.
0:14:03 > 0:14:05The design we chose is...
0:14:07 > 0:14:09- ..the Rich brothers' design. - Woo.
0:14:09 > 0:14:11Well done. Cool.
0:14:11 > 0:14:13So, what made you choose this one?
0:14:13 > 0:14:17What we loved about this one is this secret seating area at the back
0:14:17 > 0:14:20with the decking there to match in with this bit,
0:14:20 > 0:14:24and also to have the lighting in there as well, illuminated.
0:14:24 > 0:14:27And there wasn't too much lawn!
0:14:27 > 0:14:29LAUGHTER
0:14:29 > 0:14:31So you lost out!
0:14:31 > 0:14:33It's always the way.
0:14:35 > 0:14:39So, the Rich brothers have emerged triumphant.
0:14:39 > 0:14:41But Charlie isn't off the hook.
0:14:41 > 0:14:42She'll still have to help them build a garden
0:14:42 > 0:14:45that Simon and David can be proud of.
0:14:48 > 0:14:50It's a new day in West Sussex.
0:14:50 > 0:14:54The Rich brothers have sent the landscaping team in early.
0:14:55 > 0:14:58And, under the watchful eye of project manager Bonnie,
0:14:58 > 0:15:01they waste no time in clearing the garden.
0:15:01 > 0:15:03Oh. Get your hand right underneath.
0:15:03 > 0:15:05- Got it?- Yep.- OK.
0:15:06 > 0:15:10House-owner David has already dug up and potted his most precious plants
0:15:10 > 0:15:12and the neighbours have given permission
0:15:12 > 0:15:15for the team to use their garden as extra work space.
0:15:16 > 0:15:18But, because the house is in a terrace,
0:15:18 > 0:15:22getting in and out of the garden is a little tricky.
0:15:23 > 0:15:27So, this narrow side alley is the only access into the garden,
0:15:27 > 0:15:29and we've got to get all of that material down here.
0:15:29 > 0:15:31People coming backwards and forwards,
0:15:31 > 0:15:33it's filling me with dread a little bit.
0:15:35 > 0:15:38Before they can bring the new in, it's out with the old,
0:15:38 > 0:15:42as Scott and Scott set about dismantling the worn deck.
0:15:45 > 0:15:48Ed sprays the fences a contemporary grey colour.
0:15:48 > 0:15:52Hand-painting fence panels like this would take all day.
0:15:52 > 0:15:54This method will take a couple of hours.
0:15:57 > 0:15:59So, we've pulled up the old deck,
0:15:59 > 0:16:02and the existing framework is actually really good, so,
0:16:02 > 0:16:05we're going to re-use it, and just add in some new timbers
0:16:05 > 0:16:07to make our deck a bit bigger.
0:16:13 > 0:16:15The plants have started to arrive,
0:16:15 > 0:16:18with the team bringing them all down the narrow alley
0:16:18 > 0:16:21and through into the neighbour's garden. So far, so good.
0:16:21 > 0:16:23But, now, something a little larger is being unloaded.
0:16:23 > 0:16:25Right, ready?
0:16:25 > 0:16:27Cercis can grow up to 12 metres tall,
0:16:27 > 0:16:32and this large specimen will need to be brought in carefully.
0:16:34 > 0:16:37This is getting snapped here, this is getting snapped here.
0:16:37 > 0:16:39I think, take this pole out.
0:16:39 > 0:16:42Right. And just swivel it like this.
0:16:42 > 0:16:43Yeah. You got it.
0:16:43 > 0:16:46Thankfully, a little common sense from Bonnie
0:16:46 > 0:16:47gets it round the corner.
0:16:48 > 0:16:51- Beauty.- Well done, team.
0:16:54 > 0:16:58With the base frame complete, the new decking can start to go down.
0:16:58 > 0:17:04Harry and David have chosen balau, a hardwood native of Asia.
0:17:04 > 0:17:08At around £40 per square metre, it's not a cheap option,
0:17:08 > 0:17:12but it's extremely durable, and will add a touch of quality to the space.
0:17:16 > 0:17:17At the bottom of the garden,
0:17:17 > 0:17:19the ground is being cleared and levelled,
0:17:19 > 0:17:23ready for Andy to construct the base of the second decked area.
0:17:27 > 0:17:31Work is moving on apace as Harry, David and Charlie arrive.
0:17:34 > 0:17:36Well, Charlie, you're going to be located in the greenhouse.
0:17:36 > 0:17:39Fantastic! And the sun's out, what more could I want?
0:17:39 > 0:17:42So, because our design's got rid of his raised bed area,
0:17:42 > 0:17:45we need you to be really creative in the greenhouse,
0:17:45 > 0:17:47create space so he can grow his veg.
0:17:47 > 0:17:50- OK. And what are you two doing, then?- What are we doing?
0:17:50 > 0:17:52Watching Charlie in the greenhouse!
0:17:52 > 0:17:54Well, I'll get started, then.
0:17:54 > 0:17:56I'll leave you thinking.
0:17:56 > 0:17:59I don't know, we've got decking, path, plants.
0:17:59 > 0:18:02- Lighting.- Lighting.- She's got it easy, hasn't she, really?
0:18:06 > 0:18:09As Charlie makes herself at home in the greenhouse,
0:18:09 > 0:18:12the garden transformation is well underway.
0:18:12 > 0:18:16Ed is more than halfway through the fence painting.
0:18:16 > 0:18:19The two Scotts have nearly finished the upper deck.
0:18:19 > 0:18:22And Andy is now laying the boards on the bottom seating area.
0:18:25 > 0:18:27Now, this is the second decked area in the garden.
0:18:27 > 0:18:29That's what David and Simon really loved.
0:18:29 > 0:18:30It's going to be really intimate and private.
0:18:30 > 0:18:33The way we're constructing this, the same as the top deck.
0:18:33 > 0:18:36We've got this plastic membrane here which suppresses the weeds.
0:18:36 > 0:18:38And then we've got the joists and the noggins,
0:18:38 > 0:18:41they make up the framework which the decking goes on to.
0:18:41 > 0:18:44So, the red balau wood, same as at the top, has got two sides.
0:18:44 > 0:18:48So, from a designer point of view, we love this, it's nice and minimal.
0:18:48 > 0:18:51It looks a little less off-the-shelf than if you choose this side.
0:18:51 > 0:18:54But is there any functional qualities to it?
0:18:54 > 0:18:57Well, I tend to think that the flat side makes it easy to maintain,
0:18:57 > 0:19:01don't get so many bits of dirt off shoes stuck in the grooves.
0:19:01 > 0:19:04Just a little mop over it maybe once, twice a year,
0:19:04 > 0:19:08a little bit of light detergent, and you're good to go.
0:19:08 > 0:19:10Visual and functional, that's a pretty good way.
0:19:10 > 0:19:11Yeah, yeah, absolutely.
0:19:11 > 0:19:14And then, where we're putting this on to the framework,
0:19:14 > 0:19:17we're using a screw as a spacer, so, that gives us about a 5mm gap,
0:19:17 > 0:19:20and using that all the way along means you get a nice parallel gap,
0:19:20 > 0:19:22that's really important.
0:19:22 > 0:19:25We've pre-drilled the holes, because that stops it from splitting.
0:19:25 > 0:19:28And then we're going to screw it in, and that holds it nice and firm.
0:19:28 > 0:19:29- Charlie!- Yeah?
0:19:29 > 0:19:32- How are you getting on? - I'm having a great time.
0:19:32 > 0:19:34I've got the best job ever!
0:19:34 > 0:19:37- How's this decking look? - It's looking really smart, actually.
0:19:37 > 0:19:39That's good, that's all Andy's handiwork.
0:19:45 > 0:19:49The boys have got rid of Simon and David's vegetable patch, so,
0:19:49 > 0:19:51I'm going to give them something back,
0:19:51 > 0:19:53and this is really straightforward and simple.
0:19:53 > 0:19:55The first thing, sprouting seeds.
0:19:55 > 0:19:58And you're going to be eating the actual shoots,
0:19:58 > 0:20:00a bit like a bean sprout.
0:20:00 > 0:20:03So, we're going to be sprouting alfalfa seeds.
0:20:03 > 0:20:06And, on a simple basis, you just need a jam jar,
0:20:06 > 0:20:09the seeds that are pre-soaked overnight.
0:20:09 > 0:20:12Then you can put a little layer at the bottom of the jam jar.
0:20:14 > 0:20:17Then, pop some water in.
0:20:17 > 0:20:20And you're going to do this twice a day.
0:20:20 > 0:20:22Swirl it round.
0:20:23 > 0:20:25And strain it out...
0:20:26 > 0:20:29..so that they're nice and wet.
0:20:29 > 0:20:31Leave a little residue in there.
0:20:31 > 0:20:34And then you just cover that over so no dust gets in there.
0:20:34 > 0:20:38Put it somewhere in the kitchen, not in full sunlight
0:20:38 > 0:20:41and, within six to eight days,
0:20:41 > 0:20:43you're going to have alfalfa sprouts.
0:20:43 > 0:20:50Put them in sandwiches, salads, stir-fries, really lovely flavour,
0:20:50 > 0:20:52very nutty, way better than mustard and cress.
0:20:57 > 0:21:00At the top of the garden, the larger deck is complete.
0:21:00 > 0:21:02And the base layer for the pathway,
0:21:02 > 0:21:06which will link the two seating areas, is going down.
0:21:07 > 0:21:10The lawn has been taken up to make way for the path.
0:21:10 > 0:21:12New turf will be laid later.
0:21:12 > 0:21:15We're just getting the gravelling for the path
0:21:15 > 0:21:17and, as you can see, it creates this zigzag shape
0:21:17 > 0:21:20and that allowed us to create more of a journey through the space
0:21:20 > 0:21:21and also optimises on using plants
0:21:21 > 0:21:23to create a more private area at the back
0:21:23 > 0:21:26as it creates a kind of screen.
0:21:26 > 0:21:30Harry and David plan to surround the path with mature shrubs,
0:21:30 > 0:21:34completely obscuring the view down the long, narrow garden.
0:21:37 > 0:21:39Long, narrow gardens are common in the UK
0:21:39 > 0:21:41but, with a little clever design,
0:21:41 > 0:21:44their thin shape can be used to great effect.
0:21:44 > 0:21:47Liz and William Wells' garden in Berkshire is a similar size
0:21:47 > 0:21:49to David and Simon's,
0:21:49 > 0:21:52and shows how much can be achieved in a narrow plot.
0:21:54 > 0:21:56Dividing the space into different areas
0:21:56 > 0:21:57prevents your gaze from being drawn
0:21:57 > 0:22:00straight to the end of the garden.
0:22:00 > 0:22:03Here, bold purple-painted arbours and decking
0:22:03 > 0:22:06guide you around the garden and link each section.
0:22:07 > 0:22:10Make the most of the different areas created.
0:22:10 > 0:22:13Use partially hidden nooks as peaceful sitting spaces.
0:22:16 > 0:22:18Fences and boundary walls
0:22:18 > 0:22:20can be particularly dominant in narrow gardens,
0:22:20 > 0:22:24but you can use reflective surfaces to make the space feel wider,
0:22:24 > 0:22:26or paint boundaries a light colour.
0:22:28 > 0:22:31Blur borders with tall shrubs and trees, but do be careful
0:22:31 > 0:22:34not to let them grow so big that they block out the light.
0:22:37 > 0:22:40And the far end of a narrow garden can be used to create
0:22:40 > 0:22:42a secluded seating area...
0:22:44 > 0:22:46..which is exactly what David and Simon wanted
0:22:46 > 0:22:48at the bottom of their garden.
0:22:48 > 0:22:51The final decking board is being screwed into place.
0:22:51 > 0:22:54But Charlie just can't help getting involved.
0:22:57 > 0:22:59TAPPING
0:22:59 > 0:23:02- Yep?- You don't need to stop just because you've finished that.
0:23:02 > 0:23:04I think I can do what I want out here. You're in there!
0:23:04 > 0:23:06Er, you come in here and I'll have a word with you!
0:23:06 > 0:23:09Ha! I think the heat's gone to your head, Charlie!
0:23:10 > 0:23:13- Give you a haircut. - Ooh! All right, I'm off!
0:23:14 > 0:23:18David's hair may be safe for now but all the plants have arrived,
0:23:18 > 0:23:20and Harry has something else in mind for the chop.
0:23:23 > 0:23:25Ooh, look at those plants! They look epic.
0:23:25 > 0:23:28Do you know, I was actually thinking that, you know,
0:23:28 > 0:23:31the garden's quite small anyway, and these plants are looking incredible.
0:23:31 > 0:23:33- Mm-hm?- So maybe just get rid of the lawn.
0:23:33 > 0:23:36- Oh, I like that.- I might go and have a little chat and see if
0:23:36 > 0:23:38- I can persuade them to let us just plant it up.- I like that.
0:23:38 > 0:23:40Maybe twist the arms of David a little bit.
0:23:40 > 0:23:42I reckon he's susceptible to that idea, isn't he?
0:23:42 > 0:23:44He's the one, isn't he? Right.
0:23:45 > 0:23:47If Harry gets his way,
0:23:47 > 0:23:50the central lawn area will be replaced with a large planting bed,
0:23:50 > 0:23:54creating more space to re-use homeowner David's existing plants
0:23:54 > 0:23:57as well as introducing more new ones.
0:23:57 > 0:23:59Dave? Simon?
0:24:00 > 0:24:02- Grab you for a second?- Yeah.
0:24:02 > 0:24:04But can Simon be convinced?
0:24:04 > 0:24:07We have managed to get hold of some beautiful plants.
0:24:07 > 0:24:10Me and Dave have had a little bit of a discussion.
0:24:10 > 0:24:13We think maybe by getting rid of the lawn we can create one large bed.
0:24:13 > 0:24:15That sounds fabulous to me.
0:24:15 > 0:24:18- I do know that you love your lawn. - I do, but...- And you don't mind?
0:24:18 > 0:24:22And I have to mow the lawn, so just remember that you've never mowed it.
0:24:22 > 0:24:23That's true.
0:24:23 > 0:24:26- Sounds lovely.- Sounds fabulous. I'm delighted with this.
0:24:26 > 0:24:28I thought you might be.
0:24:28 > 0:24:31Perfect, right, well, stop peeking at the garden, get back in!
0:24:31 > 0:24:33Get back in the shade.
0:24:33 > 0:24:34Result!
0:24:37 > 0:24:40The sun is shining and the temperature is rising,
0:24:40 > 0:24:43which is lovely for those out in the fresh air...
0:24:43 > 0:24:46but not so hot for Charlie in the greenhouse.
0:24:46 > 0:24:48Oh, it's getting warm and steamy in here,
0:24:48 > 0:24:50but I have put some temporary shading up.
0:24:50 > 0:24:51Not beautiful, but it's working well.
0:24:51 > 0:24:54If you've got a greenhouse at home,
0:24:54 > 0:24:57it's definitely worth putting shading on it for the summertime.
0:24:57 > 0:24:59Now, I'm going to be sowing some seed.
0:24:59 > 0:25:02It's a really good way of producing lots of plants
0:25:02 > 0:25:06if you're on a tight budget, and great for vegetables.
0:25:06 > 0:25:08There's lots of different ways to sow seeds.
0:25:08 > 0:25:10I'm just using a little half seed tray here.
0:25:10 > 0:25:14Fill it with compost. And I'm going to sow some lettuce in here.
0:25:14 > 0:25:17So the best thing to do is tip it into your hand,
0:25:17 > 0:25:22and then crease your hand, because you get a natural crease there,
0:25:22 > 0:25:25and then just tap, and you can just drop the seeds out
0:25:25 > 0:25:26and space them out,
0:25:26 > 0:25:30because you don't want to sow them too close together.
0:25:30 > 0:25:33What you need to do next is cover them.
0:25:33 > 0:25:36Now, you need to use compost that you just put over like that.
0:25:36 > 0:25:38And a fine layer.
0:25:38 > 0:25:41But I prefer to use this stuff, vermiculite
0:25:41 > 0:25:46which is often used as insulation in roofs.
0:25:46 > 0:25:50But it's great for seeds because it's very light,
0:25:50 > 0:25:52covers well,
0:25:52 > 0:25:55insulates the seeds so the seed germination is much more reliable,
0:25:55 > 0:25:58and it also holds on to a lot of moisture.
0:25:58 > 0:26:03And, if you don't want to splash out on plastic things,
0:26:03 > 0:26:05then the centres of toilet rolls are really good
0:26:05 > 0:26:08and you don't need to remove them when you come to plant them,
0:26:08 > 0:26:11just make sure they are nice and wet before you put them in the ground.
0:26:11 > 0:26:14Well, I wonder what the boys are doing?
0:26:15 > 0:26:18Well, since you ask, Harry and David have come up with an idea
0:26:18 > 0:26:21to make use of the decking off-cuts.
0:26:23 > 0:26:26Wasn't on the design, but I think it'd be nice to be able to just
0:26:26 > 0:26:28- screen off the ugly bins, wouldn't it?- Yeah.
0:26:28 > 0:26:31We're very lucky that we have got a few off-cuts from the decking,
0:26:31 > 0:26:34and it's the perfect material to create a simple screen
0:26:34 > 0:26:37so it links in really nicely with the decking already in the garden.
0:26:37 > 0:26:40And it's just a simple way of getting rid of the bins.
0:26:40 > 0:26:42- Out of sight, out of mind. - Yeah, nice like that.
0:26:42 > 0:26:44And you might think I am out of sight and out of mind...
0:26:44 > 0:26:45- LAUGHTER - You were!
0:26:45 > 0:26:48Putting me in the hottest bit of the garden, argh!
0:26:48 > 0:26:52- So, yeah, what are you up to here? - Creating a bit of bin storage.
0:26:52 > 0:26:54- OK.- Screening them off. What do you think you're doing?
0:26:54 > 0:26:57- Very handy for me, these.- Looks like were not doing the screen any more.
0:26:57 > 0:27:00- Did you just see what happened there?- There's some other bits,
0:27:00 > 0:27:02but this is a perfect size for me.
0:27:08 > 0:27:11Luckily, there's plenty of leftover wood to go around.
0:27:11 > 0:27:14So, the brothers crack straight on with their screen.
0:27:20 > 0:27:22So, we've finished the softwood framework
0:27:22 > 0:27:25and then we've just faced it with the hardwood so that
0:27:25 > 0:27:30when we put in these boards on the face, really nice and flush.
0:27:30 > 0:27:33- And, hopefully, they'll be happy with it.- Hopefully they fit.- Yeah.
0:27:37 > 0:27:38Perfect.
0:27:40 > 0:27:42Over in the neighbour's garden,
0:27:42 > 0:27:44Charlie's also getting creative with those off-cuts.
0:27:44 > 0:27:47Right, that's that pre-drilled.
0:27:47 > 0:27:51So, I'm making a really simple herb container,
0:27:51 > 0:27:53just using the off-cuts of the timber.
0:27:53 > 0:27:55This one's going to go on top there.
0:27:55 > 0:27:58I've got a block of wood in each corner to screw it to.
0:27:58 > 0:28:02Make sure you leave a gap because, if you bring that right up here,
0:28:02 > 0:28:05it doesn't look so nice, so the soil will actually cover that.
0:28:05 > 0:28:08And then it's a case of screwing it together.
0:28:08 > 0:28:10I need to put a bottom on it,
0:28:10 > 0:28:14but what I was going to do is then put another smaller square
0:28:14 > 0:28:17on the top, but not have a bottom on that.
0:28:17 > 0:28:19So, the soil will go down,
0:28:19 > 0:28:21and it will root right the way down through.
0:28:27 > 0:28:29Thumbs up, good job!
0:28:29 > 0:28:31The top and bottom sections of the garden
0:28:31 > 0:28:33are coming together nicely.
0:28:35 > 0:28:38But the bit in the middle still has a long way to go.
0:28:38 > 0:28:42Scott is laying the stepping stones which lead down from the upper deck.
0:28:42 > 0:28:46The light grey colour will contrast with the warmth of the balau wood
0:28:46 > 0:28:49and give it a different feel to this section of the garden.
0:28:51 > 0:28:54Having finished the bins screen, the Rich brothers are laying
0:28:54 > 0:28:57the other end of the path which will lead to the bottom deck.
0:29:00 > 0:29:03We're using these sawn stone slabs to create the pathway,
0:29:03 > 0:29:06and that's because it gives it a really lovely minimal look.
0:29:06 > 0:29:08It fits in with the more modern style of design.
0:29:08 > 0:29:11And also the slabs have been laid in two different ways.
0:29:11 > 0:29:13At the beginning, we've got more stepping stones,
0:29:13 > 0:29:15so it creates a more natural walkway.
0:29:15 > 0:29:17Whereas, when you move through to this space,
0:29:17 > 0:29:19the slabs have been butted up nice and tightly
0:29:19 > 0:29:21so it's more of a direct route through to the decking.
0:29:21 > 0:29:24Yeah, and I think, if you have the leaf foliage going over,
0:29:24 > 0:29:26that will define that nice and clearly. Yeah.
0:29:26 > 0:29:29As you can see over there, when you have the shadow from the trees,
0:29:29 > 0:29:32- you can really pick it up. It's nice and clear, isn't it?- Yeah.- Super.
0:29:32 > 0:29:35- Next one.- Let's have a look, let's check it.- Oh, yeah!
0:29:37 > 0:29:40Charlie has sought out some shade to give much-needed protection
0:29:40 > 0:29:44to her next addition to the new vegetable collection.
0:29:45 > 0:29:47If you're really, really restricted for space,
0:29:47 > 0:29:50how about growing veg in a container?
0:29:50 > 0:29:53Everyone thinks it's got to be in a veggie patch. That's not true.
0:29:53 > 0:29:56I'm using a plastic container because vegetables really do like
0:29:56 > 0:29:59lots and lots of moisture and don't like to dry out.
0:29:59 > 0:30:02And, with any containers you're doing,
0:30:02 > 0:30:05add some moisture-retention crystals.
0:30:05 > 0:30:08I like to pre-swill it first because, sometimes,
0:30:08 > 0:30:11if you just sprinkle it in dry, and then water it,
0:30:11 > 0:30:14it grows, and all your compost falls out of the pot.
0:30:15 > 0:30:18I have got four different veg.
0:30:18 > 0:30:23I've got lettuce, we've got peas, we've got beetroot and carrots.
0:30:23 > 0:30:26Now, a lot of people think that carrots
0:30:26 > 0:30:29can't be grown in containers, but they can,
0:30:29 > 0:30:31especially those little round ones.
0:30:31 > 0:30:33OK, so, carrots.
0:30:34 > 0:30:36Then we've got peas. Now, I'm not going to grow these
0:30:36 > 0:30:39as a pea that produces a pod.
0:30:39 > 0:30:41Literally, we're going to use them as a salad vegetable.
0:30:41 > 0:30:43So, you just pinch out the leaves
0:30:43 > 0:30:45and they taste really lovely in a salad.
0:30:45 > 0:30:48And they'll keep growing and growing, creating new shoots,
0:30:48 > 0:30:50which is called cut-and-come-again.
0:30:50 > 0:30:53And it's exactly the same for the beetroot.
0:30:53 > 0:30:55You can pick the leaves, or you can let them fatten up
0:30:55 > 0:30:59so you've got the actual root ball at the bottom.
0:31:01 > 0:31:03There's plenty of other veg and fruit
0:31:03 > 0:31:06that will grow well in containers, such as strawberries, tomatoes,
0:31:06 > 0:31:09peppers and even potatoes if the pot is big enough.
0:31:09 > 0:31:11Just remember to water well,
0:31:11 > 0:31:14make sure there's a hole in the bottom of the pot for drainage,
0:31:14 > 0:31:18and bear in mind most veg like to be positioned in full sunlight.
0:31:18 > 0:31:21And speaking of light...
0:31:21 > 0:31:23Lighting was a really important factor
0:31:23 > 0:31:25for Dave and Simon, the owners.
0:31:25 > 0:31:28What we're going to do is locate these lights throughout the garden,
0:31:28 > 0:31:30picking up specific trees and shrubs,
0:31:30 > 0:31:33but also illuminating the seating areas.
0:31:33 > 0:31:36They run off the mains in the house, but then they use a transformer
0:31:36 > 0:31:38that reduces the voltage from 240 to 12,
0:31:38 > 0:31:41meaning that you don't need an electrician to install them.
0:31:41 > 0:31:45Lighting is a great way to make the most of your garden.
0:31:45 > 0:31:48Not only does it allow you to use the space in the evening,
0:31:48 > 0:31:51but cleverly-placed lights will also highlight feature plants
0:31:51 > 0:31:55and other focal points, with stunning effect.
0:31:55 > 0:31:57And, if you don't want to install electric lighting,
0:31:57 > 0:32:02there's a wide range of solar-powered lights and oil lamps.
0:32:02 > 0:32:03And don't forget the humble candle
0:32:03 > 0:32:06which can bring a space to life as the sun sets.
0:32:14 > 0:32:17David and Simon's garden is now ready for the trees and shrubs
0:32:17 > 0:32:21that will be illuminated, starting with that large cercis.
0:32:21 > 0:32:23- This is stuck.- I'll hold that bit.
0:32:23 > 0:32:26You go and be a He-Man.
0:32:26 > 0:32:30Come on, then, man. Three, two, one.
0:32:30 > 0:32:31There you go.
0:32:31 > 0:32:33Poor thing, probably sweated off half a stone,
0:32:33 > 0:32:36in this heat and in the clingfilm!
0:32:36 > 0:32:37Ta-da!
0:32:37 > 0:32:39The cercis has vivid pink flowers
0:32:39 > 0:32:44that will tie in with the blossom of the existing cherry tree,
0:32:44 > 0:32:46and its heart-shaped leaves will add a dappled canopy
0:32:46 > 0:32:50perfect for softly screening off the view of the greenhouse.
0:32:50 > 0:32:53There we are, the shape's coming back now, isn't it?
0:32:53 > 0:32:57One in, several more to go, including another cherry tree.
0:32:57 > 0:32:59He is going to go down the bottom,
0:32:59 > 0:33:04and then this guy is going to come in over there, I think.
0:33:04 > 0:33:08The brothers have chosen mature plants to give instant effect.
0:33:09 > 0:33:11Ooh, it does make it very secret down here.
0:33:11 > 0:33:13It's great, I can't see any of you!
0:33:13 > 0:33:15LAUGHTER
0:33:15 > 0:33:17Harry and David are rather particular when it comes
0:33:17 > 0:33:19to placing their plants.
0:33:19 > 0:33:21Those two next to each other look nice, spin them round.
0:33:21 > 0:33:24And, being brothers, they don't always agree.
0:33:24 > 0:33:27The only thing is... Do we have him there? He looked pretty cool.
0:33:27 > 0:33:30Do you know what I think? I think bring him.
0:33:30 > 0:33:32He can go behind there, he can go here.
0:33:32 > 0:33:35- Who's he?- So, this was... Put him... - I don't think they look nice.
0:33:35 > 0:33:37I've created a nice little bit of depth.
0:33:37 > 0:33:39Do you want to swap them around, then?
0:33:39 > 0:33:41So, what are you trying to achieve?
0:33:42 > 0:33:45Charlie and Andy have very sensibly left them to it,
0:33:45 > 0:33:48and are working on yet another added extra
0:33:48 > 0:33:50that wasn't on the original design.
0:33:50 > 0:33:53At the moment, David hasn't got a water butt.
0:33:53 > 0:33:55And, rather than use one of those plastic ones,
0:33:55 > 0:33:59which are made of recycled plastic, which is great,
0:33:59 > 0:34:00I'm going for a galvanised tank
0:34:00 > 0:34:03and Andy has just put the guttering in for me.
0:34:03 > 0:34:06So, I have to say, this bit of pipe...
0:34:06 > 0:34:08- Yeah?- I know it matches the fence... - Just about to measure it.
0:34:08 > 0:34:11- But look what I found. - Oh, OK, right!
0:34:11 > 0:34:15That will be much more attractive, won't it?
0:34:15 > 0:34:18- So, we're just going to let the water...- Run down the chain.- OK.
0:34:18 > 0:34:21And then there's no reason why I don't put a climbing plant there
0:34:21 > 0:34:24and then it can climb up it.
0:34:24 > 0:34:25Some sweet peas or something like that,
0:34:25 > 0:34:28- because they won't mind when it rains.- Great.
0:34:28 > 0:34:30- Mind your fingers. - Ooh!
0:34:33 > 0:34:35There she blows, little beauty.
0:34:37 > 0:34:42And I'm just going to see if my chain lets the water run properly.
0:34:52 > 0:34:54Well, that seems to work all right.
0:34:54 > 0:34:57- What am I doing here?- Just going to go that way.- Lift her out?
0:34:57 > 0:35:00With the position of the trees and shrubs finally agreed upon,
0:35:00 > 0:35:02it's time to get them in the ground.
0:35:02 > 0:35:05And Scott has drawn the short straw, starting with the biggest.
0:35:05 > 0:35:07Need about an hour-and-a-half!
0:35:07 > 0:35:09Let us know when you hit oil!
0:35:14 > 0:35:16Scott's not the only one digging.
0:35:16 > 0:35:20It's spades in all round to get those large planting beds filled up.
0:35:22 > 0:35:24This is the Viburnum burkwoodii.
0:35:24 > 0:35:27And what I love about it most is its beautiful open structure.
0:35:27 > 0:35:30There's also these large clusters of white flowers on the end
0:35:30 > 0:35:32which give this amazing scent.
0:35:35 > 0:35:38Buying mature shrubs means you're more likely to encounter
0:35:38 > 0:35:39one particular problem.
0:35:41 > 0:35:43All right, look at this privet here.
0:35:43 > 0:35:45So, it's clearly been in the pot quite a long time.
0:35:45 > 0:35:47Because, as you can see, the roots are pot-bound.
0:35:47 > 0:35:49That means they're going around and they're tight.
0:35:49 > 0:35:51So, what you want to do before you plant it is
0:35:51 > 0:35:54you want to tease them off. Just like that.
0:35:54 > 0:35:57It may look a little harsh, but you're doing it a lot of good.
0:35:57 > 0:36:00And all this means is, once you put it in the hole, these will grow in,
0:36:00 > 0:36:04root into all the soft soil, so it will make it grow nice and fast.
0:36:09 > 0:36:11So, privet is most commonly used for hedging
0:36:11 > 0:36:14and that's because it can be clipped and shaped quite easily.
0:36:14 > 0:36:18But, left to grow naturally and shaggy, it's a gorgeous shrub.
0:36:18 > 0:36:19And it has loads of interest.
0:36:19 > 0:36:23So, it is semi-evergreen, so, in a sheltered condition,
0:36:23 > 0:36:24it will hold most of its leaves.
0:36:24 > 0:36:27That makes it great for wildlife and especially nesting birds.
0:36:27 > 0:36:32It produces berries and flowers, so it's a must-have in your garden.
0:36:36 > 0:36:38Scott has dug the hole for the cercis.
0:36:38 > 0:36:40One, two, three.
0:36:40 > 0:36:43- Yep.- Nice.
0:36:43 > 0:36:46And, with all the shrubs and trees in,
0:36:46 > 0:36:48Harry has moved on to placing the perennials.
0:36:48 > 0:36:50Meticulously, of course.
0:36:55 > 0:36:57This is Thalictrum Black Stockings
0:36:57 > 0:36:59and, at the moment, it's got really tight clusters,
0:36:59 > 0:37:01and when the flowers come out, it's going to give this haze
0:37:01 > 0:37:05of pink and purple that draws your eye straight down the garden.
0:37:08 > 0:37:10Meanwhile, near the back door,
0:37:10 > 0:37:13Charlie is planting up her herb container.
0:37:13 > 0:37:16I'm actually going to plant a mint in it,
0:37:16 > 0:37:18but I'm going to leave the mint in its pot because,
0:37:18 > 0:37:20if you put mint in a planter like this,
0:37:20 > 0:37:23it will just take over the whole thing.
0:37:23 > 0:37:26So, the mint's going to go there,
0:37:26 > 0:37:29and then I've got a rosemary, and the lovely thing about rosemary is
0:37:29 > 0:37:31you can train it, so we can clip it back
0:37:31 > 0:37:34so it will make a nice fan shape across this wall.
0:37:34 > 0:37:36And then I've got a lavender.
0:37:36 > 0:37:38Now, you might think, oh, lavender's not a herb,
0:37:38 > 0:37:41but the great thing about lavender is
0:37:41 > 0:37:44it actually stops flies from coming into the kitchen. Scent's lovely.
0:37:44 > 0:37:48And then we've got some parsley, here and here.
0:37:48 > 0:37:52And then I'm just going to work the vegetables in around here.
0:37:56 > 0:38:00So, we're now starting to place the plants in between the paving.
0:38:00 > 0:38:03We've got four different species, and they are all low-growing,
0:38:03 > 0:38:06so we've got a brunnera, and we've got the epimedium.
0:38:06 > 0:38:07So, they tolerate more shade.
0:38:07 > 0:38:10They produce gorgeous little flowers like that there.
0:38:10 > 0:38:12And then, as we go in towards the sunnier boundary,
0:38:12 > 0:38:14what we've got is we've got alyssum,
0:38:14 > 0:38:16a nice little yellow flower, nice and vibrant.
0:38:16 > 0:38:18And dwarf alchemilla.
0:38:18 > 0:38:21These guys are all going to spread out, they'll cover all the edges
0:38:21 > 0:38:23and they'll just give a little woodland carpet
0:38:23 > 0:38:24wrapping around the paving.
0:38:30 > 0:38:32It's the final push.
0:38:32 > 0:38:34The plants that homeowner David
0:38:34 > 0:38:37has saved are re-homed alongside the new additions.
0:38:42 > 0:38:44And, as the deck is cleaned and the lights are turned on,
0:38:44 > 0:38:46the garden is complete.
0:38:50 > 0:38:53Before David and Simon called Charlie and the Rich brothers,
0:38:53 > 0:38:58they felt their long, narrow garden was stuck in the '70s.
0:39:02 > 0:39:07But now, after its £5,000 overhaul, it's been brought right up-to-date.
0:39:10 > 0:39:12The couple now have two seating areas,
0:39:12 > 0:39:15the extended patio at the top of the garden
0:39:15 > 0:39:18and a new secluded seating area at the bottom.
0:39:18 > 0:39:25The balau decking boards add a real touch of luxury and cost £1,675.
0:39:26 > 0:39:32The sleek, contemporary pathways link the two, and came in at £475.
0:39:35 > 0:39:39The last-minute addition of the water trough was £130
0:39:39 > 0:39:41and will be a useful addition to the garden.
0:39:43 > 0:39:46Many of David's existing plants were saved and re-used,
0:39:46 > 0:39:50but the Rich brothers still managed to pack in over £1,600 worth
0:39:50 > 0:39:54of new trees, shrubs and herbaceous plants,
0:39:54 > 0:40:00including the £210 cercis and two large viburnums at £60 each.
0:40:01 > 0:40:04The planting is beautifully presented by
0:40:04 > 0:40:08the revitalised grey fence which cost £500 to paint.
0:40:11 > 0:40:16Five spike lights transform the space after dark, and cost £200.
0:40:23 > 0:40:28David and Simon wanted to bring their garden into the 21st-century.
0:40:28 > 0:40:30It's time to see if the Rich brothers have delivered the garden
0:40:30 > 0:40:32they were hoping for.
0:40:34 > 0:40:37Right, well, we've had a really, really good day.
0:40:37 > 0:40:40The team have worked really hard, and we're very pleased.
0:40:40 > 0:40:43So, we'd like you to open your eyes in
0:40:43 > 0:40:46three, two, one.
0:40:47 > 0:40:49Oh, my God! Ha!
0:40:49 > 0:40:51Oh, it's amazing!
0:40:51 > 0:40:54It's absolutely amazing!
0:40:54 > 0:40:58I can't believe this is our garden!
0:40:58 > 0:41:01The fences, the plants, the path!
0:41:01 > 0:41:05- And the lights!- Yeah!- It is absolutely stunning. Oh, my God!
0:41:05 > 0:41:08David's like a kid at a toy store.
