0:00:02 > 0:00:04With her can-do attitude, love of simple gardens
0:00:04 > 0:00:05and decades of experience...
0:00:05 > 0:00:07DING
0:00:07 > 0:00:09..Charlie Dimmock is one of Britain's best-loved gardeners.
0:00:09 > 0:00:11Looking good, boys.
0:00:11 > 0:00:15But the new kids on the gardening block are the Rich brothers.
0:00:15 > 0:00:19We want to be the brothers that change people's perceptions of gardens.
0:00:19 > 0:00:22Winners of multiple medals at the Chelsea Flower Show...
0:00:22 > 0:00:25- Oh, wow!- Good turn.- That's amazing, isn't it?
0:00:25 > 0:00:28..the boys have become known for their dramatic outdoor spaces.
0:00:30 > 0:00:34Now these two different generations of gardening are going head-to-head.
0:00:34 > 0:00:38I know they've got a gold medal, but I can come up with a few ideas.
0:00:38 > 0:00:42They're meeting frustrated garden owners across the country...
0:00:42 > 0:00:43Not a lot going on, is there?
0:00:43 > 0:00:46- Not a lot.- I don't know what to do with it.
0:00:46 > 0:00:49..and will each pitch them a design based on their needs...
0:00:49 > 0:00:52- You look confused.- I am, go for it.
0:00:52 > 0:00:54- ..and budget.- It doesn't look like it could be our garden.
0:00:54 > 0:00:55The winner...
0:00:55 > 0:00:57- ALL:- Charlie!
0:00:57 > 0:01:00- Yeah, awesome! - ..brings their design to life...
0:01:00 > 0:01:01Hold on, hold on.
0:01:01 > 0:01:05- Sweet as a nut.- ..and the loser has to help them build it.
0:01:05 > 0:01:06Keep working, keep working, boys.
0:01:06 > 0:01:09Whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa. Easy.
0:01:09 > 0:01:11This is what happens...
0:01:11 > 0:01:13Just get on with it! Sometime today would be good.
0:01:13 > 0:01:15..when different styles collide...
0:01:15 > 0:01:18I think your brother's throwing the toys out of his pram.
0:01:18 > 0:01:23- Right, are we doing this?- ..to turn garden dreams into reality.
0:01:23 > 0:01:25Wow. Aw!
0:01:25 > 0:01:28- Oh, my goodness.- Wow!
0:01:28 > 0:01:31- Look at that.- Oh, my God.
0:01:31 > 0:01:33- Wow.- Wow.
0:01:39 > 0:01:42It's time to find out whose garden Charlie and the Rich brothers are
0:01:42 > 0:01:45competing over today.
0:01:45 > 0:01:47Young couple, Darshna and Noyon.
0:01:47 > 0:01:49Nice, colourful outfit, isn't it?
0:01:49 > 0:01:51Yeah, they look really sweet, don't they?
0:01:51 > 0:01:54I'm afraid to say the garden doesn't look quite so sweet.
0:01:54 > 0:01:57- No, it looks wild, doesn't it? - Wild? It looks a mess.
0:02:00 > 0:02:03Accountant Darshna and Noyon, a project manager,
0:02:03 > 0:02:07upgraded from a flat to their house in Harrow just under two years ago.
0:02:07 > 0:02:10They desperately wanted some outdoor space,
0:02:10 > 0:02:13but their back yard is far from appealing.
0:02:14 > 0:02:16Our garden is currently not used at all.
0:02:16 > 0:02:19We've kind of spent a lot of time doing the inside of the house,
0:02:19 > 0:02:21so it's been a bit neglected.
0:02:21 > 0:02:25It's a bit of a... I don't want to say embarrassment,
0:02:25 > 0:02:29but those of our friends who have seen it always comment
0:02:29 > 0:02:30that it's so small.
0:02:30 > 0:02:35It's a very, very small courtyard garden, which could be great.
0:02:35 > 0:02:38Looks like it's a bit of a dumping site at the moment, isn't it?
0:02:38 > 0:02:40Yeah, but look at all that concrete.
0:02:40 > 0:02:41SHE SIGHS
0:02:44 > 0:02:48Apart from an unruly climber, a few weeds and a big pile of rubbish,
0:02:48 > 0:02:51Darshna and Noyon's six-by-ten-metre outdoor space
0:02:51 > 0:02:55is blank and featureless.
0:02:55 > 0:02:59I think it's that thought of not even knowing where to start with it,
0:02:59 > 0:03:03because we're not gardeners, and we haven't ventured to try and make any
0:03:03 > 0:03:06kind of attempt to do some gardening.
0:03:06 > 0:03:10But the couple have grand designs for their miniature plot.
0:03:11 > 0:03:14Four years ago, during a trip to India,
0:03:14 > 0:03:16they fell in love with the gardens they visited there.
0:03:18 > 0:03:23I'm interested in the sort of classical Indian Mughal architecture
0:03:23 > 0:03:27with repetitive patterns, symmetry, so that is
0:03:27 > 0:03:32sort of my dream garden.
0:03:32 > 0:03:36The Mughal, or Mogul, Empire originated in the 16th century,
0:03:36 > 0:03:40and extended over large parts of the Indian subcontinent.
0:03:40 > 0:03:43Mughal gardens are known for their geometric layouts,
0:03:43 > 0:03:46stunning water features and intricate details.
0:03:47 > 0:03:51Bringing this to Harrow will be a challenge for the designers,
0:03:51 > 0:03:54and that's not all - Noyon has another passion that he is keen to
0:03:54 > 0:03:56see reflected in the garden.
0:03:56 > 0:03:58I really love tiles.
0:03:58 > 0:04:03I mean, I've tried to incorporate as much tiling as I'm allowed within
0:04:03 > 0:04:07this house without being too overbearing.
0:04:07 > 0:04:09I know the garden's small,
0:04:09 > 0:04:12but if that could be incorporated that would be amazing.
0:04:12 > 0:04:13What is the cash?
0:04:13 > 0:04:16The cash, £2,500.
0:04:16 > 0:04:19- OK.- I mean, it's a tiny space, so it's not that bad, is it?
0:04:19 > 0:04:20It is a tiny space.
0:04:20 > 0:04:23But I feel like there's a lot of work, isn't there?
0:04:23 > 0:04:26- And not a plant really in sight that's meant to be there.- Yeah.
0:04:26 > 0:04:29Charlie and the Rich brothers love a challenge.
0:04:30 > 0:04:34So they head to Harrow to see the garden for themselves.
0:04:34 > 0:04:36With each of them hoping to win the contract,
0:04:36 > 0:04:39they'll be on the lookout for anything that gives them an edge.
0:04:41 > 0:04:44- Wow.- Well, it's definitely not Capability Brown, is it?
0:04:44 > 0:04:46It's more like Inky Dinky.
0:04:46 > 0:04:48Inky Dinky!
0:04:48 > 0:04:51- It is a cool space, though, isn't it?- Yeah.
0:04:51 > 0:04:54- I love it.- I could get really excited about this, you know?
0:04:54 > 0:04:58I can see why they're, like, "It's tiny, it's small, argh!"
0:04:58 > 0:05:00I actually don't think it's that small.
0:05:00 > 0:05:02Maybe it's the illusion that it's small. It's got high walls.
0:05:02 > 0:05:04But, actually, careful design,
0:05:04 > 0:05:06I think this space could feel a lot bigger.
0:05:06 > 0:05:09Yeah, well, maybe getting rid of that to start with.
0:05:09 > 0:05:12- Yeah, definitely.- After seeing the garden first-hand,
0:05:12 > 0:05:16David and Harry are optimistic and head inside for a poke around.
0:05:17 > 0:05:19- It's a lovely space. - It's gorgeous, isn't it?
0:05:19 > 0:05:22I think blue is definitely the running theme, isn't it?
0:05:22 > 0:05:23And blue tiles, as well.
0:05:23 > 0:05:26Picking up on the colours, it unifies the room together,
0:05:26 > 0:05:28it just adds that bit of quality, I think, doesn't it?
0:05:28 > 0:05:30And also I saw the mirror, as well.
0:05:30 > 0:05:32I think, for me, that looks like Mogul.
0:05:32 > 0:05:35- It does.- If anything does. I think we should definitely look to try
0:05:35 > 0:05:38- and incorporate that kind of shape into the garden.- Mm.
0:05:38 > 0:05:42The brothers are excited and continue their investigation around the house
0:05:42 > 0:05:45whilst outside, Charlie meets Noyon and Darshna
0:05:45 > 0:05:48to find out what they need from their garden.
0:05:48 > 0:05:50- The space is quite small.- Yeah.
0:05:50 > 0:05:53What are you expecting from the garden?
0:05:53 > 0:05:56A very low-maintenance garden from us, I think.
0:05:56 > 0:06:01- Right.- Mm-hm.- Anything that takes the focus away from the size.
0:06:01 > 0:06:04I think we're quite keen on having an area to sit out, maybe, like,
0:06:04 > 0:06:06decked and looks quite pretty.
0:06:06 > 0:06:07- A very inviting area.- Yeah.
0:06:10 > 0:06:13Oh, wow! Look at that. It's fit for a king, that shower.
0:06:13 > 0:06:16Again, I think tiles is definitely the thing.
0:06:16 > 0:06:18I know it's not odd to see tiles in a bathroom, but white again,
0:06:18 > 0:06:22- but then with just one wall, which has a bit of...- BOTH:- ..detail.
0:06:22 > 0:06:24I couldn't have said it better myself.
0:06:24 > 0:06:28Now, tell me, explain to me about what's going on with this dog's leg
0:06:28 > 0:06:32- in the fence.- The previous owner of the house used to drive his car in,
0:06:32 > 0:06:34- and park it here.- Oh, so it's a parking space.- Yeah.
0:06:34 > 0:06:37- Yes.- We are sorting that out. That's going to be straightened out,
0:06:37 > 0:06:39so we'll have a bit more space for you to work with.
0:06:39 > 0:06:42- A slightly bigger garden.- Yeah.- A bigger garden.
0:06:42 > 0:06:44THEY LAUGH
0:06:44 > 0:06:47Charlie and the Rich brothers have their work cut out for them.
0:06:47 > 0:06:50They have to make the space feel bigger, keep it low-maintenance,
0:06:50 > 0:06:54give it a Mughal feel and incorporate tiling,
0:06:54 > 0:06:56and all for £2,500.
0:06:56 > 0:06:58This is going to be tough.
0:07:02 > 0:07:05It's time for the designers to get to work.
0:07:05 > 0:07:08Charlie and the Rich brothers will compete against each other to come
0:07:08 > 0:07:11up with a design that will work with Darshna and Noyon's budget.
0:07:14 > 0:07:18The couple will then have to choose a design, and whoever loses will
0:07:18 > 0:07:21have to help the winner build the garden.
0:07:21 > 0:07:25The £2,500 budget will be used to cover the cost of the materials for
0:07:25 > 0:07:29their new garden, while the labour will be supplied by Charlie,
0:07:29 > 0:07:32the Rich brothers and their team of landscapers.
0:07:33 > 0:07:36It's time for the big pitch.
0:07:37 > 0:07:41Charlie knows that the couple want a low-maintenance garden that appears
0:07:41 > 0:07:43bigger than it actually is.
0:07:43 > 0:07:45Oh!
0:07:45 > 0:07:49- Wow.- While David and Harry have seen Noyon's love of tiles at first hand.
0:07:49 > 0:07:53- Hi.- In this little garden, whose big ideas will come out on top?
0:07:53 > 0:07:55So, this is our design.
0:07:55 > 0:07:59- Wow.- It's time for the big pitch.
0:07:59 > 0:08:02So, we know that there are definitely a couple of things you
0:08:02 > 0:08:03guys really wanted in this garden.
0:08:03 > 0:08:06One of them was to make it feel a lot larger than it already is.
0:08:06 > 0:08:10And the second one was to really stress and be inspired from that
0:08:10 > 0:08:14Mogul style of courtyard, and I feel like we've done it.
0:08:14 > 0:08:17Although it looks simple, it's all in the detail.
0:08:17 > 0:08:19- We know your passion for tiles. - Yeah.
0:08:19 > 0:08:22We wanted to create this lovely, seamless floorscape by using two
0:08:22 > 0:08:26different tiles. One, the lighter one, is going to make the space feel
0:08:26 > 0:08:29quite airy. And the other one is going to have that lovely pattern
0:08:29 > 0:08:33- that runs around the simpler tile. - And it'll be a lovely, pretty blue.
0:08:33 > 0:08:37- Something that will match the blue in your living room.- Oh, wow.- OK.
0:08:37 > 0:08:40The Rich brothers want to tile the floor all the way from the back door
0:08:40 > 0:08:46to the rear wall, leaving essential open space for relaxing in.
0:08:46 > 0:08:50Charlie, however, has taken a different approach.
0:08:50 > 0:08:53To make as much usable space as possible,
0:08:53 > 0:08:55this is a long, narrow patio,
0:08:55 > 0:08:59with very sleek, white slabs.
0:08:59 > 0:09:05So it would be an area you could have a dining-room table outside.
0:09:05 > 0:09:10And then this is a simple decking that's smooth and a wooden bench for
0:09:10 > 0:09:15when you don't want to get all your garden furniture out.
0:09:15 > 0:09:17And then a fire bowl.
0:09:17 > 0:09:20And I've left areas in the garden for tiling,
0:09:20 > 0:09:25but what I don't want to do is put my influence of what I would choose
0:09:25 > 0:09:30tile wise, and I think you would really enjoy putting your mark on
0:09:30 > 0:09:32- the garden.- Really good.
0:09:34 > 0:09:38Not including any tiles in her design is a gamble for Charlie,
0:09:38 > 0:09:41but she has cleverly included two sitting areas,
0:09:41 > 0:09:46offering both a patio and the decking area that Darshna requested.
0:09:46 > 0:09:50But what do the designers have planned for the back wall?
0:09:50 > 0:09:53So, we have three archways, painted archways on the back wall,
0:09:53 > 0:09:55so it gives that concept, that idea that, actually,
0:09:55 > 0:09:57there's something further beyond that.
0:09:57 > 0:10:00That will stretch the imagination into a larger garden, you know,
0:10:00 > 0:10:02- of your dreams.- Yeah.- Yeah.- Then softened by climbers,
0:10:02 > 0:10:04so you're going to get lovely blossom,
0:10:04 > 0:10:06maybe something like trachelopsermum,
0:10:06 > 0:10:07which just has a lovely scent.
0:10:07 > 0:10:10And it's really going to encapsulate this whole space.
0:10:10 > 0:10:12I want to highlight your wall.
0:10:12 > 0:10:14I want to paint it over in a white colour,
0:10:14 > 0:10:19which will lighten the garden even more and make it look more open.
0:10:19 > 0:10:22And then we'll have planting along there,
0:10:22 > 0:10:24but they're going to be quite dramatic plants.
0:10:24 > 0:10:29Something like Arundo donax, you know, that looks like sugar cane.
0:10:29 > 0:10:33Canna lilies that have got big, strapping, broad leaves.
0:10:33 > 0:10:37And then I have what's called a silk tree.
0:10:37 > 0:10:42And it gets pink, pom-pom-y red flowers all the way over the top.
0:10:42 > 0:10:44- It looks amazing.- Sounds good.
0:10:45 > 0:10:47So, it's a bold and vibrant
0:10:47 > 0:10:50yet low-maintenance planting scheme from Charlie.
0:10:50 > 0:10:54How will the brothers respond?
0:10:54 > 0:10:57With the planting, we wanted to keep it very luscious, very green,
0:10:57 > 0:11:00a lot of foliage. One of the key things are the banana trees.
0:11:00 > 0:11:03And their leaves are huge, and it's really going to draw your eye up,
0:11:03 > 0:11:05- and make the garden feel larger than it is.- Wow.
0:11:05 > 0:11:08Plenty of other things, as well, so there'll be, like, a fatsia,
0:11:08 > 0:11:10which has got a large, palmate leaf.
0:11:10 > 0:11:13Euphorbia, which is, again, a lovely, evergreen leaf.
0:11:13 > 0:11:15Things that will hold their lusciousness
0:11:15 > 0:11:18- and their form throughout the year.- Yeah.
0:11:18 > 0:11:20Two very different designs, then,
0:11:20 > 0:11:23but Darshna and Noyon seem to like them both.
0:11:23 > 0:11:26How will the Mughal touches swing their decision?
0:11:26 > 0:11:29As for the Mogul theme...
0:11:29 > 0:11:31that's this section here.
0:11:31 > 0:11:35And we have planting around here, which will be evergreen.
0:11:35 > 0:11:40- Right.- We then have an inner raised square, with planting,
0:11:40 > 0:11:42and each section.
0:11:42 > 0:11:48We then come up another layer with a tall flowerpot with a feature plant
0:11:48 > 0:11:51- in it.- Wow, sounds good.- Sounds amazing.- Yeah.
0:11:51 > 0:11:53Within these Mogul style of courtyards water is really
0:11:53 > 0:11:56important, so we've introduced a little fountain -
0:11:56 > 0:11:57that you can see here.
0:11:57 > 0:12:00Quite symmetrical within the centre of this part of the garden.
0:12:00 > 0:12:03And that will act as a lovely focal point and I think really emphasise
0:12:03 > 0:12:05that relaxing feeling. You have the sound of water.
0:12:05 > 0:12:07It's refreshing, especially in summer.
0:12:07 > 0:12:10I think it'll just be a really gorgeous place to be.
0:12:10 > 0:12:12- It looks amazing.- Brilliant.
0:12:12 > 0:12:16Both designs have gone all out to give Darshna and Noyon
0:12:16 > 0:12:18the Mughal-themed garden they've been dreaming about.
0:12:18 > 0:12:22And each one also maximises their small space.
0:12:22 > 0:12:23Oh...
0:12:23 > 0:12:25I don't know.
0:12:25 > 0:12:27But they can only pick one.
0:12:27 > 0:12:31So, whose garden will they choose?
0:12:31 > 0:12:34I really like the way Charlie has got the two elements in here with
0:12:34 > 0:12:37the raised decking and this clean piece here.
0:12:37 > 0:12:39- Oh, bit of decking?- A lot of decking.
0:12:39 > 0:12:41- A lot of it?- With a fire bowl.
0:12:41 > 0:12:42Huh?
0:12:42 > 0:12:43We do fire bowls normally.
0:12:43 > 0:12:46- You're just surprised that I came up with it?- This isn't surprise,
0:12:46 > 0:12:48- this is the face of a worried man. - No, not at all. Yeah.
0:12:48 > 0:12:50This is such a clean design.
0:12:50 > 0:12:54The tiling just looks really sort of nice and neat.
0:12:54 > 0:12:57- Yeah.- See, I decided that I would let Noyon
0:12:57 > 0:13:00put his own mark on the garden.
0:13:00 > 0:13:02It's called the easy way out, that is, Charlie.
0:13:02 > 0:13:05I think that's using your noggin.
0:13:05 > 0:13:07It's just very confusing.
0:13:07 > 0:13:10Yeah, it's definitely a difficult decision.
0:13:11 > 0:13:14So, will it be Charlie's decking area with in-built storage
0:13:14 > 0:13:18and raised bedding, vibrant, colourful planting and fire bowl?
0:13:18 > 0:13:21Or the Rich brothers' tiled courtyard garden
0:13:21 > 0:13:24with arches to create the illusion of space, banana trees
0:13:24 > 0:13:28and custom-built water feature?
0:13:28 > 0:13:32- Hello.- Hi.- Hi.- It's time to decide.
0:13:32 > 0:13:35- We've made a decision.- We've made our decision.
0:13:35 > 0:13:37And it is...
0:13:37 > 0:13:39THEY CHEER
0:13:39 > 0:13:41- Awesome!- Well done, well done.
0:13:41 > 0:13:43- Sorry, Charlie.- It's all right.
0:13:43 > 0:13:44What made you decide on this?
0:13:44 > 0:13:47I think it looks like a different world.
0:13:47 > 0:13:51With the back wall, as well, with that detail there,
0:13:51 > 0:13:54it's like you're escaping into some exotic, faraway land.
0:13:54 > 0:13:56- Very exciting.- Yeah.- I'm not painting the arches.
0:13:56 > 0:13:58You are! That steady hand.
0:13:58 > 0:14:01You've got that artistic touch, Charlie.
0:14:02 > 0:14:07So, the Rich brothers take this one, but they're going to need Charlie's
0:14:07 > 0:14:11help to transform this tiny plot into an exotic paradise.
0:14:15 > 0:14:18It's early morning in Harrow.
0:14:18 > 0:14:20The Rich brothers are off sourcing their exotic plants,
0:14:20 > 0:14:23so landscapers Scott, Andy, other Scott
0:14:23 > 0:14:26and project manager Bonnie are here to clear the garden.
0:14:32 > 0:14:35Darshna and Noyon have had their fence line straightened out to
0:14:35 > 0:14:38create more space and they've got new gates.
0:14:38 > 0:14:42Harry and David weren't expecting this when they designed the garden.
0:14:42 > 0:14:45On here, on the plan, we've got a border running down the side,
0:14:45 > 0:14:48and the gates open inwards.
0:14:48 > 0:14:51Which means these gates open into the flower bed.
0:14:51 > 0:14:53- So we'll have to end it here, maybe? - Yeah, yeah.
0:14:54 > 0:14:57As Andy demolishes the old wall,
0:14:57 > 0:15:02Scott and Bonnie start marking out where all those tiles will go.
0:15:03 > 0:15:07The brothers' design involves two types of tile, creating clean,
0:15:07 > 0:15:09straight lines with intricate edging detail.
0:15:09 > 0:15:12These will need to be placed exactly right.
0:15:12 > 0:15:1665 centimetres wide, it is, so 65 out to here.
0:15:18 > 0:15:21The existing concrete surface might be an eyesore,
0:15:21 > 0:15:24but it does provide an ideal base for laying the tiles.
0:15:25 > 0:15:27Right, so that's our centrepiece.
0:15:27 > 0:15:30- Yeah.- And that's going to come over 20?- Yeah.
0:15:31 > 0:15:34Around the edges, however, where the flowerbeds are going,
0:15:34 > 0:15:36that concrete has to go.
0:15:42 > 0:15:45Once all the concrete is out, Bonnie and Andy begin to construct what
0:15:45 > 0:15:48will eventually be the water feature.
0:15:50 > 0:15:53Whilst Scott starts laying those all-important tiles.
0:15:55 > 0:15:58These blue edging tiles will create the repeating pattern that Noyon
0:15:58 > 0:16:02is so keen on, and help give it that Mughal feel.
0:16:04 > 0:16:07The plain tiles that will fill the rest of the space are being laid at
0:16:07 > 0:16:09a 45-degree angle,
0:16:09 > 0:16:13which is a great way to fool the eye into believing the area is bigger.
0:16:14 > 0:16:17- How's it going, Scott?- Brilliant. - Yeah?- Really good.
0:16:17 > 0:16:19Yeah, they're flying down, so it's really nice.
0:16:19 > 0:16:21- It's looking good.- Yeah, it's looking nice.
0:16:21 > 0:16:24- I'm really pleased, actually. - The contrast works really well.
0:16:24 > 0:16:26It's going to look amazing when it's finished, yeah.
0:16:26 > 0:16:28- Probably a bit fiddly laying the two together, but...- It is, yeah,
0:16:28 > 0:16:31- but it's going to be worth it in the end.- Worth the effort, yeah. Lovely.
0:16:31 > 0:16:34I'm using rapid set cement, as well, so I've got to get it done
0:16:34 > 0:16:37- pretty quick.- Quick, quick, quick. Why do you think I bought rapid set?
0:16:37 > 0:16:40- To keep you moving.- Keep us moving, yeah. Thanks for that.
0:16:45 > 0:16:48Work is really moving on apace as David, Harry
0:16:48 > 0:16:50and Charlie arrive on site.
0:16:50 > 0:16:52- Oh.- That's good, they've got the gates in.- I know.
0:16:52 > 0:16:54Isn't that nice? Now we can finally see where they are.
0:16:54 > 0:16:57I feel like the design may have to amend a little bit, though.
0:16:57 > 0:17:00- Yeah, and it is a tiny little space. - But, you know, that means there's
0:17:00 > 0:17:02not going to be a lot of work to be done,
0:17:02 > 0:17:05but what is done has to be of quality.
0:17:05 > 0:17:08- Top notch.- Yeah, I think Darshna would have been quite happy just for
0:17:08 > 0:17:12- it to be tidy.- Yes.- Whereas Noyon is going to be... He's very particular.
0:17:12 > 0:17:14- He is.- Which will make the garden look amazing.
0:17:14 > 0:17:18- Yes.- So, there's no pressure there, boys.- All in the detail.- Yeah.
0:17:19 > 0:17:21- So, am I just making tea all day? - Absolutely not.
0:17:21 > 0:17:23You're sorting out the water feature.
0:17:23 > 0:17:26OK. All right, then.
0:17:26 > 0:17:29No more questions. And then a bit of planting with us afterwards.
0:17:29 > 0:17:31And then we're going to do...
0:17:31 > 0:17:33- Arches.- Arches.- And a little bit of tiling, maybe,
0:17:33 > 0:17:36- and we have a little idea with a table.- Ooh, yeah.
0:17:36 > 0:17:39- OK.- We won't tell you yet, Charlie, we'll leave it as a surprise.
0:17:39 > 0:17:42So, the biggest problem's going to be keeping out of each other's way
0:17:42 > 0:17:43- in such a small space.- Yeah, probably.
0:17:43 > 0:17:46- Well, we'd just better get on, then, eh?- Yeah.
0:17:46 > 0:17:48The designers are eager to get cracking,
0:17:48 > 0:17:51and while the Rich brothers have kept the Mughal theme,
0:17:51 > 0:17:54they are using Darshna and Noyon's courtyard space wisely.
0:17:58 > 0:18:01Award-winning garden designer Jack Dunkley has some top tips if you,
0:18:01 > 0:18:03too, have a courtyard garden.
0:18:05 > 0:18:08A courtyard garden is enclosed on two sides of the boundary,
0:18:08 > 0:18:11or in the middle of the house, with the house running all the way around
0:18:11 > 0:18:14it, and kind of access into the courtyard as a central space.
0:18:15 > 0:18:18The boundaries of a courtyard garden can often be quite high,
0:18:18 > 0:18:20thus blocking out the light.
0:18:20 > 0:18:22If this is the case in your garden,
0:18:22 > 0:18:25be sure to include shade-loving plants.
0:18:25 > 0:18:27However, due to their enclosed nature,
0:18:27 > 0:18:31courtyard gardens can have their own microclimate.
0:18:31 > 0:18:33Courtyards generally are quite good for frost,
0:18:33 > 0:18:35so they can be quite enclosed and sheltered.
0:18:35 > 0:18:38So, if you've got anything a little bit tender then a courtyard would be
0:18:38 > 0:18:40a good place to put it.
0:18:40 > 0:18:44But be careful if your courtyard garden is a sun trap.
0:18:44 > 0:18:47A courtyard can get very, very hot in the summer.
0:18:47 > 0:18:49Not watering plants enough can be a real problem.
0:18:49 > 0:18:51Or if you go for the wrong types of plant that need a lot of moisture,
0:18:51 > 0:18:54then they can get absolutely baked.
0:18:54 > 0:18:56To make any small garden appear bigger
0:18:56 > 0:18:59there's a couple of things you can do.
0:18:59 > 0:19:01If you've got a small garden and you want to make it appear bigger,
0:19:01 > 0:19:04then the best thing to do is to tackle the boundaries.
0:19:04 > 0:19:06If you've got a brown, enclosing fence, it's really kind of dark,
0:19:06 > 0:19:09and it'll be nice to lighten it up, put some planting on it,
0:19:09 > 0:19:12maybe give it a touch of paint, and then look at linear lines,
0:19:12 > 0:19:14and at the longest point of your garden put a focal point in.
0:19:14 > 0:19:17Cos that will draw your eye to the longest part.
0:19:23 > 0:19:25In Darshna and Noyon's small garden, project manager Bonnie
0:19:25 > 0:19:28is laying the topsoil for the planting beds.
0:19:30 > 0:19:33And Charlie has a suggestion for the brothers' water feature.
0:19:35 > 0:19:38We could make that into a bit of a planter there, maybe.
0:19:38 > 0:19:40I think it would be quite nice, just soften it.
0:19:40 > 0:19:42Something to... Now...
0:19:42 > 0:19:44explain to me what you want.
0:19:44 > 0:19:47- I've now got the water.- Yeah. - I've got the walls.- Yes.
0:19:47 > 0:19:49- Going to paint this?- Yes. All of it.
0:19:49 > 0:19:52The whole thing, right. And where do you want the waterspout?
0:19:52 > 0:19:55Well, ideally, it was just going to come out of the middle.
0:19:55 > 0:19:56- Right.- Just as a simple little feature.
0:19:56 > 0:20:00My only thing with that is the noise can be slightly irritating,
0:20:00 > 0:20:04- if you know what I mean.- Make you go to the toilet.- Not to be indelicate.
0:20:04 > 0:20:08- So, maybe if we can break the fall of the water?- Yeah.- I'm thinking,
0:20:08 > 0:20:12- you know your garden's all about foliage and jungle...- Yeah.
0:20:12 > 0:20:14- ..that we maybe do some leaves? - Yeah.
0:20:14 > 0:20:18- Because I found this bit of old lead in the skip.- That's a good find.
0:20:18 > 0:20:21Could be really interesting, couldn't it? And it would age
0:20:21 > 0:20:24- quite nicely.- And then it could drip down the leaves and drop in.
0:20:24 > 0:20:26Yeah, yeah. Perfect, I'll leave it with you, Charlie.
0:20:26 > 0:20:29Right, I've just got to smooth this off now.
0:20:36 > 0:20:38Landscaper Scott is laying the patterned tiles,
0:20:38 > 0:20:42but will they fit under the new garden gate?
0:20:42 > 0:20:44Just open it out and see if it goes over those tiles.
0:20:47 > 0:20:50- Oh!- Oh, look at that.- Dream.
0:20:50 > 0:20:53- Perfectly planned, that was, made-to-measure.- Lovely.
0:20:55 > 0:20:57On the other side of the gate,
0:20:57 > 0:21:00David and Harry are marking out the arches for the back wall.
0:21:02 > 0:21:05Originally we did want to paint it straight onto the wall,
0:21:05 > 0:21:07but the wall's in a bit of a bad condition,
0:21:07 > 0:21:10some of the mortar's falling out, so we're using marine ply.
0:21:10 > 0:21:12That's going to give a lovely, clean, crisp archway.
0:21:12 > 0:21:15Marine ply is perfect for it, rather than normal ply -
0:21:15 > 0:21:18it's much more suited to the outdoor conditions.
0:21:18 > 0:21:20You might not be able to see it yet,
0:21:20 > 0:21:22but actually you've got the base of the archway here.
0:21:22 > 0:21:24We're just drawing the vertical sides of it.
0:21:24 > 0:21:27And at the top here is that ornamental archway style.
0:21:27 > 0:21:30What I've got here is actually a template.
0:21:30 > 0:21:33We were first inspired by the inside of their house.
0:21:33 > 0:21:36They had this beautiful mirror with a beautiful shape,
0:21:36 > 0:21:39and we wanted to replicate that with the top of the arches.
0:21:39 > 0:21:40So I've used cardboard.
0:21:40 > 0:21:43And by folding it in half, and drawing out the shape,
0:21:43 > 0:21:46when you reveal it, it's very symmetrical.
0:21:46 > 0:21:50And that's going to give all three arches the same identity.
0:21:55 > 0:21:57Marine ply is extremely durable
0:21:57 > 0:21:59and will withstand prolonged exposure to water,
0:21:59 > 0:22:02making it a great material to use in the garden.
0:22:05 > 0:22:07- Right, shall we stand it up?- Yes.
0:22:09 > 0:22:11It's going to look cool, isn't it?
0:22:11 > 0:22:13- Yes.- Perfect.- Nice.- Crack on!
0:22:14 > 0:22:16One arch down, two to go.
0:22:18 > 0:22:21A Mogul garden in Harrow might seem surprising,
0:22:21 > 0:22:23but it's not the only one in the country.
0:22:26 > 0:22:30Bradford's Lister Park has all the usual Victorian features
0:22:30 > 0:22:32you'd expect in a conventional British park.
0:22:32 > 0:22:34But, in April 2001,
0:22:34 > 0:22:38its very own Mogul-inspired garden opened to the public.
0:22:43 > 0:22:46Ian Woods, principal manager of parks and green spaces,
0:22:46 > 0:22:48was involved in its creation.
0:22:49 > 0:22:54The garden is widely accepted in the country as quite unique
0:22:54 > 0:22:55in its element and design.
0:22:55 > 0:22:57We're very, very proud of that aspect.
0:23:01 > 0:23:05The garden itself is 130 metres long, 30 metres wide,
0:23:05 > 0:23:08and it's divided up by the watercourses, the rills,
0:23:08 > 0:23:11and the footpaths, breaking it down into little sub-gardens,
0:23:11 > 0:23:15culminating in the pond at the end with the larger fountain there.
0:23:15 > 0:23:18At the end of the watercourses here we have traditional Mogul designed
0:23:18 > 0:23:20arches with the two cascades at either side,
0:23:20 > 0:23:23which is that final backdrop to the garden.
0:23:26 > 0:23:30The garden in Lister Park follows the Mogul principles of symmetry
0:23:30 > 0:23:32and repetitive linear lines,
0:23:32 > 0:23:34used to divide the space into smaller sections.
0:23:34 > 0:23:38It's a simple, clean design.
0:23:38 > 0:23:41It's quite elegant and formal at the same time.
0:23:41 > 0:23:42And it's not fussy.
0:23:42 > 0:23:45You can come into this garden and just feel at one
0:23:45 > 0:23:48with the garden, effectively - it's such a tranquil space.
0:23:48 > 0:23:50People can interact with the water,
0:23:50 > 0:23:52they can walk across the watercourses,
0:23:52 > 0:23:54they can sit at the side of it on the grass.
0:23:59 > 0:24:02Mogul gardens evolved from what are known as Paradise Gardens,
0:24:02 > 0:24:06and are a fusion of Hindu and Islamic architectural styles.
0:24:08 > 0:24:12Part of the design was a garden which expressed Bradford's cultural
0:24:12 > 0:24:15heritage, but something that would lend sympathetically with the park,
0:24:15 > 0:24:19its natural surroundings, and the Grade II listed house as a backdrop.
0:24:20 > 0:24:23Local craftsmen were involved, local stone was sourced,
0:24:23 > 0:24:25so it's an English-cum-Bradford theme
0:24:25 > 0:24:27on what was initially a Mogul garden design.
0:24:32 > 0:24:35The local community in Bradford think it's a fantastic space.
0:24:35 > 0:24:40It's just so different, yet so in line with what we have in Yorkshire.
0:24:42 > 0:24:46Creating a Mogul-style garden needn't be difficult.
0:24:47 > 0:24:51To replicate this design in a garden at home would be quite easy to do.
0:24:51 > 0:24:54It's all about creating simple watercourses.
0:24:54 > 0:24:56They don't have to be wide, they can be very narrow.
0:24:56 > 0:24:59As long as you get that soothing flow of water,
0:24:59 > 0:25:01or a fountain at one end of the garden, or something like that,
0:25:01 > 0:25:04it can be replicated on such a small scale.
0:25:11 > 0:25:13Back in Harrow, Charlie is brushing down the water feature
0:25:13 > 0:25:16before she brightens it up with a lick of paint.
0:25:19 > 0:25:23The great thing about white is it's going to really reflect the light
0:25:23 > 0:25:27in the garden and make it really zing and seem bright.
0:25:27 > 0:25:31Which will really show off the light greens of the banana plants
0:25:31 > 0:25:33and the fatsias.
0:25:33 > 0:25:37And with the movement of the water you'll get those dancing sparkles
0:25:37 > 0:25:40of light on the leaves - should look glorious.
0:25:43 > 0:25:46But painting anything properly can be a finickity task
0:25:46 > 0:25:50that can test the patience of even the most experienced DIYer.
0:25:51 > 0:25:55- Charlie?- Have I been demoted? My painting job being taken away?
0:25:55 > 0:25:57We're going to start painting this wall.
0:25:57 > 0:26:01Would have been nice if you didn't give me a two-inch brush to paint the water feature with!
0:26:01 > 0:26:04- Getting tired of it, are you? - Getting a bit bored.
0:26:04 > 0:26:05Well, that's why we're here!
0:26:05 > 0:26:08After five minutes of painting you'll be bored, as well.
0:26:09 > 0:26:11Oh, shabby chic.
0:26:11 > 0:26:13Yes, see, that looks great.
0:26:13 > 0:26:14Yeah, love that.
0:26:14 > 0:26:16Gives that tile effect, doesn't it?
0:26:16 > 0:26:18Even though it's brickwork.
0:26:18 > 0:26:20Yeah, it does, it makes it more pronounced.
0:26:25 > 0:26:27Just as Charlie predicted,
0:26:27 > 0:26:29within minutes the brothers are looking for a distraction.
0:26:29 > 0:26:32You could sing a song for us, Charlie?
0:26:32 > 0:26:35Sing a song of sixpence, a pocket full of rye?
0:26:35 > 0:26:37That's actually my favourite!
0:26:37 > 0:26:40Hmm, bet you don't even know what a sixpence is!
0:26:40 > 0:26:42Yeah, it's a money thing, isn't it?
0:26:42 > 0:26:45Yeah. They were worth 2.5p,
0:26:45 > 0:26:48you probably can't even remember what a halfpenny is!
0:26:49 > 0:26:51Shilling?
0:26:51 > 0:26:54- Penny farthing? - That's a bike, you lemon!
0:26:54 > 0:26:56I think I should stick to painting.
0:26:56 > 0:26:59Yeah, I would, and my mouth shut.
0:26:59 > 0:27:01That's what I was doing.
0:27:02 > 0:27:03- Oldest and wisest.- Yeah.
0:27:05 > 0:27:08Resigned to their fate, David and Harry persevere with their job,
0:27:08 > 0:27:11while Charlie's finishing painting the water feature.
0:27:21 > 0:27:25The tiling is still under way, and landscaper Andy
0:27:25 > 0:27:27lays in the raised edging to retain the planting beds,
0:27:27 > 0:27:30which will soon feature the tropical greenery.
0:27:32 > 0:27:35While round the back of the house, Harry is working on an extra feature
0:27:35 > 0:27:38that wasn't in their original design.
0:27:38 > 0:27:42A garden's not complete without somewhere to sit and enjoy it,
0:27:42 > 0:27:45so we wanted to create this bespoke table to go in the garden.
0:27:45 > 0:27:48That gave us the opportunity to really tie into that Mogul theme.
0:27:48 > 0:27:51We picked up some reclaimed legs, but didn't have the table top.
0:27:51 > 0:27:53So we've created it with marine ply.
0:27:53 > 0:27:56And we've used batons on the outside,
0:27:56 > 0:27:59and that allows us to put the tiles on the top nice and flush.
0:27:59 > 0:28:02So it's really going to create a lovely finish.
0:28:02 > 0:28:05The brothers have decided to keep the table as a surprise
0:28:05 > 0:28:07for Darshna and Noyon.
0:28:07 > 0:28:11But David wants to run their tile choice past the couple.
0:28:11 > 0:28:12- Hi.- Hello, how are you?
0:28:12 > 0:28:14- Good, thank you.- Fine, thank you.
0:28:14 > 0:28:16I've got an idea for something special
0:28:16 > 0:28:17- that wasn't on the design.- OK...
0:28:17 > 0:28:20You'll have to trust us, but I think it's going to be really cool.
0:28:20 > 0:28:22And it does involve these tiles.
0:28:22 > 0:28:24I'm sold.
0:28:24 > 0:28:27Done. Go back in, I'm off!
0:28:27 > 0:28:29Anything involving tiles, he's sold.
0:28:29 > 0:28:32- Easy. Quite nice, aren't they?- Yes, really nice, I like the colours.
0:28:32 > 0:28:35There's a lot of varieties - a whole box of them, all different.
0:28:35 > 0:28:38- Am I allowed to look into your box? - No, just these ones.- OK.
0:28:38 > 0:28:42- I trust you.- Nice, perfect, OK. Glad you like them,
0:28:42 > 0:28:44but I'm going to have to ask you to leave now,
0:28:44 > 0:28:47because this is where you disappear for the rest of the day
0:28:47 > 0:28:49and then you come back to the surprise of your garden.
0:28:49 > 0:28:50- Can't wait.- OK.
0:28:50 > 0:28:53- Awesome.- Thank you very much. - See you in a bit, goodbye.
0:28:55 > 0:28:59With the tiles getting the thumbs up Harry can start sticking them on.
0:29:01 > 0:29:04The table top has been specifically made to fit the tiles,
0:29:04 > 0:29:07so there's no need to cut them, which will give a neater finish.
0:29:11 > 0:29:13Right, last one to go in.
0:29:15 > 0:29:16Perfect.
0:29:18 > 0:29:19Inside the garden,
0:29:19 > 0:29:23Charlie is moving on to the next stage of the water feature.
0:29:23 > 0:29:27The thing about water features and pumps is you have to have electric.
0:29:27 > 0:29:30Now, if you get an electrician in it makes it expensive,
0:29:30 > 0:29:32there's a lot more preparation,
0:29:32 > 0:29:35but what we're doing is using a solar-powered pump.
0:29:35 > 0:29:38I have to say, they have come on leaps and bounds
0:29:38 > 0:29:40in the last few years.
0:29:40 > 0:29:43So you've actually got a battery pack
0:29:43 > 0:29:46that charges up from the solar panel.
0:29:46 > 0:29:50And the great thing about this is, say it hasn't been really sunny
0:29:50 > 0:29:52and you're going to have people round,
0:29:52 > 0:29:56and you want the pump to be working well, you can take the battery,
0:29:56 > 0:29:59plug it inside for a couple of hours, and it fully charges up.
0:29:59 > 0:30:03Now what I need to do is test the pump.
0:30:03 > 0:30:05Now, this is the cool bit.
0:30:05 > 0:30:06It's a little remote control.
0:30:10 > 0:30:14But sorting out the plumbing seems to have sent Charlie round the bend.
0:30:15 > 0:30:18Calling Harry and David!
0:30:18 > 0:30:21Are you working out there, or just drinking tea?
0:30:21 > 0:30:22I bet I know the answer.
0:30:23 > 0:30:26- I can see him. - Can you see my eye or my head?
0:30:26 > 0:30:28I can see your head and your eye.
0:30:28 > 0:30:30Do you like my little gadget?
0:30:30 > 0:30:32What is it, an old phone?
0:30:32 > 0:30:35It's the pump remote control.
0:30:35 > 0:30:36- Is it?- It's got four settings on it!
0:30:36 > 0:30:39Wow. Thumbs up!
0:30:39 > 0:30:43Now, all I've got to do is fill this without a hose.
0:30:43 > 0:30:45One bucket at a time.
0:30:45 > 0:30:46What a joy.
0:30:46 > 0:30:49Good luck, Charlie, she's got at least 20 or 30 buckets
0:30:49 > 0:30:51to get that thing full.
0:30:53 > 0:30:57The gentle sound of moving water is a great addition to any garden.
0:31:01 > 0:31:03From ready-made to custom built,
0:31:03 > 0:31:07the range of water features on offer is huge.
0:31:09 > 0:31:11Water features made using a variety of metals
0:31:11 > 0:31:14can create a contemporary structural character.
0:31:17 > 0:31:19Whilst ones that focus on wood or stone
0:31:19 > 0:31:21give a more natural, warmer feel.
0:31:25 > 0:31:29But not all water features need to include a fountain
0:31:29 > 0:31:30or sculptural element.
0:31:30 > 0:31:34Small streams, or even ponds, can be just as effective.
0:31:35 > 0:31:40If you want the water to be crystal clear to really show off your fish,
0:31:40 > 0:31:43for example, you'll need a filtration system.
0:31:45 > 0:31:48And if you line it properly and include the right planting
0:31:48 > 0:31:50you can have a pond absolutely anywhere.
0:31:52 > 0:31:56Back in the garden Charlie is adding her extra-special touch
0:31:56 > 0:31:58to the Rich brothers' water feature.
0:32:01 > 0:32:04Right, that's me bit of lead flattened.
0:32:04 > 0:32:07So that I can put a template on.
0:32:07 > 0:32:10So, the boys drew a leaf, that shape for me,
0:32:10 > 0:32:14I'm going to pop that on there and then just cut it out.
0:32:21 > 0:32:22Then it's a case of a bit of detail.
0:32:24 > 0:32:28So I'm going to take the sharp edges off with sandpaper.
0:32:31 > 0:32:34And then I'm going to mark some veins down here.
0:32:40 > 0:32:42There you go, that's it done.
0:32:42 > 0:32:45So, the idea is the water is going to run down and drip off.
0:32:45 > 0:32:46In theory.
0:32:48 > 0:32:51The arches have been given a coat of paint
0:32:51 > 0:32:54and so they can paint the edges a darker grey,
0:32:54 > 0:32:57Harry and David are using tape to create a clean line.
0:33:01 > 0:33:04The two contrasting shades will create a 3-D effect,
0:33:04 > 0:33:05giving the illusion
0:33:05 > 0:33:07that there's something beyond the arches themselves.
0:33:11 > 0:33:15In the garden, Charlie's testing out the leaves for the water feature.
0:33:15 > 0:33:19We're having to test each leaf to get it right on the right place,
0:33:19 > 0:33:22but I think it'll look lovely once it's finished.
0:33:24 > 0:33:26Charlie fixes the leaves to the water feature,
0:33:26 > 0:33:29while David and Harry screw the arches to the wall.
0:33:32 > 0:33:33That looks all right.
0:33:33 > 0:33:35DRILL WHIRS
0:33:35 > 0:33:37That's good timing, Charlie!
0:33:42 > 0:33:46Around the corner, the Scotts are trying to balance their workload.
0:33:46 > 0:33:49Can't touch these tiles. Do not touch these tiles!
0:33:49 > 0:33:52I think I'm going to have to in a minute, I'm going to fall!
0:33:52 > 0:33:54The tiles have not gone off, they're still wet,
0:33:54 > 0:33:56and I'm trying to clean them,
0:33:56 > 0:34:00so I'm stuck here, so you can just stay there and be the bucket boy.
0:34:00 > 0:34:03- That's a promotion, isn't it? - Yeah, that is a promotion.
0:34:06 > 0:34:09With the quick-drying cement drying...quickly,
0:34:09 > 0:34:12they use a jointing compound to fill in the gaps.
0:34:14 > 0:34:16This comes as a ready-made mixture.
0:34:16 > 0:34:18You simply add water and brush in.
0:34:22 > 0:34:26It's finally time to start bringing in the lush green foliage
0:34:26 > 0:34:28that is so typical of Mughal gardens.
0:34:28 > 0:34:30- One banana, two bananas.- Yes!
0:34:30 > 0:34:31Three banana, four!
0:34:31 > 0:34:35In fact, six banana trees are placed around the courtyard.
0:34:38 > 0:34:41Just started to place the banana trees.
0:34:41 > 0:34:43What we're using is a Musa basjoo,
0:34:43 > 0:34:45and that's actually the hardiest banana tree you can get.
0:34:45 > 0:34:48So it's going to be perfect down here in London.
0:34:48 > 0:34:51Though if they do have a really cold winter they will have to protect it.
0:34:51 > 0:34:53But the reason we've chosen them
0:34:53 > 0:34:56is just to really tie in with that Mogul courtyard theme.
0:34:56 > 0:34:59They're going to provide a really tall, dappled, lush green canopy.
0:34:59 > 0:35:01Really exotic feeling.
0:35:01 > 0:35:03When the sun is beating down,
0:35:03 > 0:35:05they'll provide that lovely bit of shade.
0:35:06 > 0:35:10Bananas can grow to well over two metres tall with large,
0:35:10 > 0:35:14elegant leaves bringing a real touch of the exotic to the garden.
0:35:14 > 0:35:17They'll need wrapping in straw or horticultural fleece
0:35:17 > 0:35:18to protect them over the winter.
0:35:18 > 0:35:23And in warm summers, they produce striking cream-coloured flowers.
0:35:23 > 0:35:28Right, the boys have allowed me one plant in my water feature.
0:35:28 > 0:35:31This is just an Acorus gramineus variegatus.
0:35:31 > 0:35:35Semi-evergreen, and it's got this big sort of fountain of foliage.
0:35:35 > 0:35:37It doesn't get much taller than this.
0:35:37 > 0:35:40And I'm just really using it just to break the line
0:35:40 > 0:35:45of the tank, and the pipe that's going out.
0:35:45 > 0:35:49I'm dropping it in ever so slowly so all of the soil doesn't come out.
0:35:49 > 0:35:51There you go.
0:35:51 > 0:35:54Then in this front planting pocket,
0:35:54 > 0:35:57the boys have gone for Alchemilla mollis,
0:35:57 > 0:36:00and they'll have the nice, frothy green flowers
0:36:00 > 0:36:04that will drop over the side of the planter, soften it all up.
0:36:08 > 0:36:11The planting's in full swing all over the garden.
0:36:11 > 0:36:14And Scott's getting the fatsias in.
0:36:14 > 0:36:16They're often kept as a house plant,
0:36:16 > 0:36:19but they really come into their own outdoors,
0:36:19 > 0:36:21where the leaves become darker and thicker.
0:36:21 > 0:36:25They'll grow in almost any type of soil, do well in shade or sun,
0:36:25 > 0:36:28and, even if neglected, are a forgiving plant,
0:36:28 > 0:36:31so they're ideal for this low-maintenance garden.
0:36:31 > 0:36:34One of the plants we're using in this garden is Luzula nivea,
0:36:34 > 0:36:36and that's snowy woodrush.
0:36:36 > 0:36:40It's gorgeous, evergreen grass, and it tolerates up to full shade.
0:36:40 > 0:36:43So, under the canopy of the bananas, next to the fatsias,
0:36:43 > 0:36:45it's going to grow really well.
0:36:45 > 0:36:49And what's nice is that unlike other grasses that flower in late summer,
0:36:49 > 0:36:51this actually flowers in early summer.
0:36:51 > 0:36:53You'll get these tall stalks
0:36:53 > 0:36:57and this lovely plume of white on top that'll last into the summer.
0:36:57 > 0:36:59And what you can do after it's flowered,
0:36:59 > 0:37:01you can cut them down and that new,
0:37:01 > 0:37:05luscious green growth will fill the garden with lovely colour.
0:37:12 > 0:37:14Everyone's getting stuck in.
0:37:14 > 0:37:16Well, almost everyone.
0:37:16 > 0:37:18It's coming together nicely, isn't it, team?
0:37:18 > 0:37:21Yes, it's all this hard graft.
0:37:21 > 0:37:23Hard graft, Harry? What?
0:37:23 > 0:37:26Yeah, you're just stood there with a plant in your hand!
0:37:26 > 0:37:28This is hard. Hard graft!
0:37:30 > 0:37:31Where's that cup of tea?
0:37:35 > 0:37:37With the large leaved evergreen plants in place,
0:37:37 > 0:37:39the perennials can now be added.
0:37:40 > 0:37:43And Charlie's in charge of the euphorbias.
0:37:43 > 0:37:45There are around 2,000 kinds.
0:37:45 > 0:37:47This one will grow to about two foot tall,
0:37:47 > 0:37:50has tiny red flowers surrounded by yellowy bracts,
0:37:50 > 0:37:54which bloom from February and can continue through until autumn.
0:37:56 > 0:37:59Now, Harry's finally getting his hands dirty.
0:37:59 > 0:38:01This is one of my favourites,
0:38:01 > 0:38:04Jacob's Ladder, and has a kind of beautiful dusty purple colour.
0:38:04 > 0:38:07And that's going to link really nicely with those tiles.
0:38:07 > 0:38:09That's a really important factor when looking to design your garden
0:38:09 > 0:38:12or bring in plants, to have that unity
0:38:12 > 0:38:14within the hard landscaping and the soft landscaping.
0:38:14 > 0:38:17And this is really going to pick out that colour
0:38:17 > 0:38:18and look great in the garden.
0:38:29 > 0:38:31The plants are being packed in,
0:38:31 > 0:38:34and it's all hands on deck to get every one of them planted in time.
0:38:37 > 0:38:41A quick tidy, and the climbers are last to be positioned
0:38:41 > 0:38:43before the finishing touches are brought in.
0:38:43 > 0:38:46- Is it going to fit?- I think it's OK.
0:38:48 > 0:38:50I can't really see what's middle...
0:38:52 > 0:38:55- That one there.- Oh!
0:38:55 > 0:38:57- Lovely.- Beautiful.
0:38:57 > 0:38:59- You can't have a table without any chairs, can you?- No.
0:39:04 > 0:39:07Before they called Charlie and the Rich brothers,
0:39:07 > 0:39:11Darshna and Noyon's garden was a tiny, overgrown dumping ground.
0:39:14 > 0:39:17But now, after its £2,500 overhaul,
0:39:17 > 0:39:20the garden has been transformed.
0:39:22 > 0:39:25The two-tone tiling, with its orderly pattern,
0:39:25 > 0:39:29has made a huge difference, and cost £685.
0:39:32 > 0:39:35The water feature, a must in any Mogul garden,
0:39:35 > 0:39:38was custom made from cement blocks and a cattle trough
0:39:38 > 0:39:41at a cost of £240.
0:39:42 > 0:39:45And it's set off perfectly by the recycled lead leaves.
0:39:48 > 0:39:52The Mogul-inspired arches give the illusion of space
0:39:52 > 0:39:54and came in at £190.
0:39:55 > 0:39:58The impressive tropical planting has brought a little bit of paradise
0:39:58 > 0:40:00to north-west London.
0:40:01 > 0:40:04It features six banana trees, each costing £30.
0:40:06 > 0:40:08Eight fatsias were also £30 each.
0:40:12 > 0:40:16And an array of underplanting at a total of £421.
0:40:18 > 0:40:21The handmade statement table gives the couple a place to relax
0:40:21 > 0:40:25in their own little haven, and cost a total of £80.
0:40:26 > 0:40:29Darshna and Noyon desperately wanted to make the most
0:40:29 > 0:40:32of their small outdoor space with a Mogul theme
0:40:32 > 0:40:36that included tiling, and all for £2,500.
0:40:36 > 0:40:39It's time to see if the Rich brothers have delivered.
0:40:40 > 0:40:44I can't see much of the garden, but I can see them.
0:40:44 > 0:40:48Three, two, one, open your eyes.
0:40:48 > 0:40:50Oh, my God!
0:40:50 > 0:40:53- Wow. It looks amazing.- Wow!
0:40:53 > 0:40:57- Glorious.- Yeah!- Good!- Wow!
0:40:57 > 0:40:59It just looks like a different garden.
0:40:59 > 0:41:02Yes, this does not look like our garden.
0:41:02 > 0:41:05Do you feel it captures that Mogul theme?
0:41:05 > 0:41:06Yes, and more.
0:41:06 > 0:41:08I love the pattern of the blue here.
0:41:10 > 0:41:12I'd never imagined this.
0:41:12 > 0:41:14I thought Noyon would like the tiles.
0:41:14 > 0:41:18Right up his street, those tiles are, aren't they?
0:41:18 > 0:41:21The tiles Dave showed you earlier have been put to good use,
0:41:21 > 0:41:22and are now the table top.
0:41:22 > 0:41:25That's really creative. When you showed me the tiles,
0:41:25 > 0:41:27I had no idea what you were going to do with them.
0:41:27 > 0:41:29- You trusted us.- Yes, I trusted you.
0:41:29 > 0:41:32- That is amazing. - Wicked.- Look at this!
0:41:32 > 0:41:35- I know, it's Charlie's water feature.- I hadn't even noticed that.
0:41:35 > 0:41:36Hold on two seconds!
0:41:37 > 0:41:39David's got the remote out.
0:41:40 > 0:41:43- Yay!- Oh, nice!
0:41:43 > 0:41:45That is spectacular.
0:41:45 > 0:41:48- Bespoke leaf, shaped by Charlie. - Oh, very nice.
0:41:48 > 0:41:49Water feature's a hit.
0:41:49 > 0:41:53I have to say, it was a real faff, but worth it.
0:41:53 > 0:41:56The garden is going to look luscious and green throughout the whole year,
0:41:56 > 0:41:58- which is going to be amazing.- Yep.
0:41:58 > 0:42:00But also, when the banana trees grow up real tall,
0:42:00 > 0:42:03it's going to create quite an immersive space in here.
0:42:03 > 0:42:05Then we've got some perennials scattered through.
0:42:05 > 0:42:08Spring to summer you'll have all these different plants coming up,
0:42:08 > 0:42:11creating that lovely bit of colour in the garden.
0:42:11 > 0:42:14So it'll be quite exciting for you guys to watch the garden evolve
0:42:14 > 0:42:16and grow over the next couple of years.
0:42:16 > 0:42:18It's going to be like a world away,
0:42:18 > 0:42:20it's going to look like an exotic paradise.
0:42:20 > 0:42:22- Yeah.- Yeah.- Can't wait!
0:42:22 > 0:42:24Can you imagine using it with your family, and everything?
0:42:24 > 0:42:27- Yes.- Well, yeah, and we're actually expecting, so...
0:42:27 > 0:42:29Yeah!
0:42:29 > 0:42:31..a little baby here, as well.
0:42:31 > 0:42:33- Oh, nice!- Awesome. You've got a lovely house,
0:42:33 > 0:42:35- and now...- A lovely garden!
0:42:35 > 0:42:38I didn't want to say it, but you beat me to it!
0:42:42 > 0:42:45Now the team have left, what do Darshna and Noyon really think
0:42:45 > 0:42:49- of their new garden? - I think it's amazing.
0:42:49 > 0:42:51I'm so happy with the end product.
0:42:51 > 0:42:53It's so much better than I thought it was going to be.
0:42:53 > 0:42:56It's just completely exceeded my expectations.
