0:00:02 > 0:00:05With her can-do attitude, love of simple gardens, and decades of
0:00:05 > 0:00:10experience, Charlie Dimmock is one of Britain's best loved gardeners.
0:00:10 > 0:00:12Looking good, boys!
0:00:12 > 0:00:15But the new kids on the gardening block are the Rich brothers.
0:00:15 > 0:00:18We want to be the brothers that change people's perceptions
0:00:18 > 0:00:19of gardens.
0:00:19 > 0:00:22Winners of multiple medals at the Chelsea Flower Show...
0:00:22 > 0:00:25Amazing, isn't it?
0:00:25 > 0:00:28..the boys have become known for their dramatic outdoor spaces.
0:00:29 > 0:00:34Now, these two different generations of gardening are going head-to-head.
0:00:34 > 0:00:38I know they've got a gold medal, but I can come up with a few ideas.
0:00:38 > 0:00:42They're meeting frustrated garden owners across the country...
0:00:42 > 0:00:45- Not a lot going on, is there? - Not a lot!
0:00:45 > 0:00:47I don't know what to do with it.
0:00:47 > 0:00:51..and will each fetch them a design, based on their needs and budget.
0:00:51 > 0:00:53That sounds amazing.
0:00:53 > 0:00:55Doesn't look like it could be our garden.
0:00:55 > 0:00:58- The winner... - Charlie!
0:00:58 > 0:01:00..brings their design to life.
0:01:00 > 0:01:05- Hold on!- Sweet as a nut!- And the loser has to help them build it.
0:01:05 > 0:01:11- Keep working, keep working, boys! - Whoa, easy!- This is what happens...
0:01:11 > 0:01:13Just get on that, sometime today would be good!
0:01:13 > 0:01:16..when different styles collide...
0:01:16 > 0:01:19I think your brother's throwing the toys out of his pram.
0:01:19 > 0:01:20Right, are we doing this?
0:01:20 > 0:01:23..to turn garden dreams into reality.
0:01:23 > 0:01:25Open your eyes.
0:01:25 > 0:01:27It's lovely.
0:01:27 > 0:01:30- Wow! - Look at that.
0:01:30 > 0:01:32Whoa! It's not our garden.
0:01:43 > 0:01:46It's time for Charlie and the Rich brothers to find out today's
0:01:46 > 0:01:47garden challenge.
0:01:49 > 0:01:52Here we have Shona from Northampton, and the great thing about
0:01:52 > 0:01:55this is she lives with four generations of her family.
0:01:55 > 0:01:58- Wow! - She's got her mother, her daughter,
0:01:58 > 0:01:59and her granddaughter all under one roof.
0:01:59 > 0:02:02Oh, I bet there's a few discussions sometimes, don't you?
0:02:02 > 0:02:04- That's a very busy household. - Yeah.
0:02:06 > 0:02:09Shona, a finance administrator, lives with her daughter,
0:02:09 > 0:02:12Lottie, her mother, Patricia, and also looks after
0:02:12 > 0:02:15her granddaughter, Amelia, three days a week.
0:02:15 > 0:02:18Shona would like a garden for the whole family to enjoy,
0:02:18 > 0:02:20particularly her mother, Patricia.
0:02:20 > 0:02:23And they have got a lovely garden. It is quite well-kept,
0:02:23 > 0:02:26because there is a bit of a budding gardener in the family.
0:02:26 > 0:02:28- Who's that, then? - Mum.- Oh, OK.
0:02:28 > 0:02:32I've always been a keen gardener, but nowadays, I can't bend so much,
0:02:32 > 0:02:38but I like to get out, do a little bit of pruning and pottering about.
0:02:38 > 0:02:42That's my ideal day - pottering about in a nice garden.
0:02:45 > 0:02:48Despite Patricia's enthusiasm,
0:02:48 > 0:02:51the current garden is a far cry from what either her or her
0:02:51 > 0:02:54daughter's idea of a pottering paradise might be.
0:02:55 > 0:03:01The garden is in dire need of tender, loving care.
0:03:01 > 0:03:08With me working and looking after my grandchild, the garden
0:03:08 > 0:03:11has really not been loved, and of course, my mum
0:03:11 > 0:03:16with her arthritis cannot get round to do the things that
0:03:16 > 0:03:21she'd like to do, so it has sort of being left, really.
0:03:21 > 0:03:24It looks like it's very bare, doesn't it? It's just lawn.
0:03:24 > 0:03:27There is a lot of lawn, and you can't see that well from the photos,
0:03:27 > 0:03:30but there is a slope leading from that patio into the garden.
0:03:32 > 0:03:34In fact, the slope makes enjoying the garden
0:03:34 > 0:03:36very difficult for Shona and her family.
0:03:38 > 0:03:41Mowing can be quite a handful, really, but to have
0:03:41 > 0:03:46a path through the garden to get to the top would be ideal.
0:03:46 > 0:03:48- The main focus on the garden needs to be the slope.- Yeah.
0:03:48 > 0:03:51So whether we're eating into it to terrace it and make more usable
0:03:51 > 0:03:54space, or terracing it back, putting some steps up to the top of the
0:03:54 > 0:03:57- garden...- Make it accessible. - Yes, exactly.
0:03:59 > 0:04:01Mother and daughter would like the designers to
0:04:01 > 0:04:04tackle the treacherous patio as well.
0:04:04 > 0:04:07I tend to trip over it as it is now,
0:04:07 > 0:04:10and I can't afford to do any falling!
0:04:10 > 0:04:12Because I wouldn't be able to get up again.
0:04:12 > 0:04:15The patio looks quite mean as well, doesn't it, really?
0:04:15 > 0:04:18I think it's probably more of a path than a patio.
0:04:18 > 0:04:19It's quite unusable.
0:04:24 > 0:04:26Also high on the priorities list is
0:04:26 > 0:04:29a safe play area for little Amelia.
0:04:29 > 0:04:31They're not too fussed on the design elements of it,
0:04:31 > 0:04:34but it's just making it accessible and usable for all generations,
0:04:34 > 0:04:37so for Mum and for Granddaughter, really, that safety side.
0:04:37 > 0:04:41Quite a tricky brief, that, isn't it, to try and hit all of those?
0:04:41 > 0:04:43To make the garden work for them all,
0:04:43 > 0:04:47Shona and Patricia are prepared to dig deep into their savings.
0:04:48 > 0:04:52Our budget for the garden is £5,000, and hopefully
0:04:52 > 0:04:55that will give us our dreams
0:04:55 > 0:04:59and make four generations really happy.
0:05:01 > 0:05:03A healthy budget, then.
0:05:03 > 0:05:05- Not too bad.- Yeah, I'm pretty happy with that one.
0:05:06 > 0:05:08Although they have £5,000 to play with,
0:05:08 > 0:05:11the designers have a lot to consider here.
0:05:14 > 0:05:17So without further ado they head to Northampton to meet the
0:05:17 > 0:05:21family and see the garden for themselves.
0:05:21 > 0:05:23While Charlie goes to find Shona in the garden...
0:05:25 > 0:05:28..the brothers head inside to find out what Patricia
0:05:28 > 0:05:30has in mind for the plot.
0:05:30 > 0:05:32- Hello, lads.- How are you? - Do you mind if we have a seat?
0:05:32 > 0:05:36- Yes, by all means.- It's nice and cosy.- It's nice to see you.- Yeah.
0:05:36 > 0:05:38How do you see yourself using the garden?
0:05:38 > 0:05:42I like to sit outside and have meals outside in the summertime.
0:05:42 > 0:05:44- Yeah.- Breakfasts outside.
0:05:44 > 0:05:47- The weather's usually good here. - Yeah, definitely, yeah.
0:05:47 > 0:05:50So one large space maybe that the whole family can enjoy.
0:05:50 > 0:05:51Oh, yes.
0:05:51 > 0:05:53That would be lovely, yes.
0:05:53 > 0:05:57While Pat is after a communal garden, Shona seems to have
0:05:57 > 0:06:00a slightly different idea about what she'd like to see.
0:06:01 > 0:06:04Well, we want a garden where we can all use it at once,
0:06:04 > 0:06:06or we can use it individually.
0:06:06 > 0:06:09So if my daughter's here and she wants her friends around for
0:06:09 > 0:06:13a barbecue, there's plenty of space and she can use it like that.
0:06:13 > 0:06:17- But you haven't necessarily got to join in?- No, definitely not!
0:06:17 > 0:06:19- Definitely not.- OK.
0:06:19 > 0:06:22Something for your daughter to use with her mates.
0:06:22 > 0:06:24And my mum to use. Something...
0:06:24 > 0:06:27I had in mind maybe raised garden beds
0:06:27 > 0:06:30so that she doesn't have to bend down and this sort of thing.
0:06:30 > 0:06:33- So she can still potter and enjoy the garden?- Yes.
0:06:33 > 0:06:36Something that I can do which is easy to maintain
0:06:36 > 0:06:38- because I'm not the gardener.- Ah-ha.
0:06:38 > 0:06:42And something for Amelia to play in and feel that she's safe.
0:06:43 > 0:06:47Charlie and the boys have £5,000 to design a garden that each
0:06:47 > 0:06:51member of the family can use, both separately and altogether.
0:06:51 > 0:06:56It must include raised beds, a play area, and a safe patio.
0:06:56 > 0:06:59Suddenly, the budget isn't looking quite so healthy.
0:06:59 > 0:07:01They're going to have to be ingenious.
0:07:06 > 0:07:09The designers compete against each other to come up with
0:07:09 > 0:07:12a design that will work within the family's budget.
0:07:12 > 0:07:14Patricia and Shona will then choose a winner.
0:07:18 > 0:07:21And whoever loses will have to help the winner build the garden.
0:07:24 > 0:07:28The £5,000 will be used to cover the cost of the materials for their
0:07:28 > 0:07:31new garden while the labour will be supplied by Charlie,
0:07:31 > 0:07:34the Rich brothers and their team of landscapers.
0:07:34 > 0:07:37It's time for the designers to pitch their ideas.
0:07:39 > 0:07:42There we are.
0:07:44 > 0:07:47- Up the slope.- Yes, it is, yes.
0:07:49 > 0:07:52- There we go. - Oh, it looks lovely.
0:07:53 > 0:07:56The main issue here wasn't hard to notice - it's the slope.
0:07:56 > 0:07:59- It certainly is.- That's what we get paid to do. That's genius.
0:07:59 > 0:08:03What we wanted to make sure is that we dug into that bank,
0:08:03 > 0:08:07we retained it and we gave you a lot larger area to use.
0:08:07 > 0:08:10- That would be good.- Right, yes.
0:08:10 > 0:08:14The boys are tackling the troublesome slope head-on by digging
0:08:14 > 0:08:19into the lawn and creating three terraces, each retained by sleepers.
0:08:21 > 0:08:24Now I have definitely zoned the garden, but it's going to be
0:08:24 > 0:08:27very multipurpose zoning.
0:08:27 > 0:08:31We've got this gently sloping path so that would sweep round up
0:08:31 > 0:08:34to the sunny part of the garden.
0:08:34 > 0:08:38Charlie has added a path to make the slope more manageable and
0:08:38 > 0:08:42has tried to please both mother and daughter by giving each
0:08:42 > 0:08:46family member their own area, as well as spaces to gather together.
0:08:48 > 0:08:53I've popped in there a nice, big deck area to get that afternoon sun.
0:08:53 > 0:08:56The boys have also added a deck but have incorporated
0:08:56 > 0:09:00a mid-level seating area and a top deck where Amelia can play.
0:09:00 > 0:09:04They also want to give Pat an area to herself to potter about in.
0:09:07 > 0:09:11We've got three small raised planters on the patio and we
0:09:11 > 0:09:14thought that maybe if you wanted you could have a small table and chairs
0:09:14 > 0:09:17just by here so you're surrounded by some trees, shrubs and plants.
0:09:17 > 0:09:19Right. That'll be nice.
0:09:19 > 0:09:21Not to be outdone,
0:09:21 > 0:09:24Charlie has also kept Pat's love of gardening in mind.
0:09:24 > 0:09:27This area down here I've got some raised beds that will be
0:09:27 > 0:09:29sort of what I would call perching height.
0:09:29 > 0:09:31- Right.- Lovely, yeah.
0:09:31 > 0:09:34But staggered so that it doesn't look too chunky.
0:09:34 > 0:09:36- OK.- Yeah.
0:09:36 > 0:09:41Charlie's included a modern, child-safe water feature and
0:09:41 > 0:09:44a large play space for Amelia.
0:09:44 > 0:09:46I thought it'd be really nice to make
0:09:46 > 0:09:50a bit of an entranceway for her so this will be screened off
0:09:50 > 0:09:53using clump-forming bamboos...
0:09:53 > 0:09:56- Oh, right.- ..because play equipment's never that pretty.
0:09:56 > 0:09:58- No.- I have to say.
0:09:58 > 0:10:00- That would screen it off.- Yeah.
0:10:00 > 0:10:04Then stepping stones - rather than just stepping stones through
0:10:04 > 0:10:06I've laid it out as hopscotch.
0:10:06 > 0:10:08Hopscotch, she'll like that, yes.
0:10:08 > 0:10:10Then this will all be grass.
0:10:12 > 0:10:15Shona and Patricia seem impressed, but can the brothers win them
0:10:15 > 0:10:17over with their planting?
0:10:17 > 0:10:19You've got some shrubs around here that we'd like to keep.
0:10:19 > 0:10:23We'd like to introduce a few more, especially as you guys were saying
0:10:23 > 0:10:25you like a lot of colour - flowers, something that brings in wildlife.
0:10:25 > 0:10:29- Yes, it sounds good. It sounds really good.- Brilliant.
0:10:29 > 0:10:31- The patio bit...- Yeah.
0:10:31 > 0:10:35- Um...- They're just the slabs as they are now
0:10:35 > 0:10:37but, Pat, you did mention some of them are a bit uneven.
0:10:37 > 0:10:39They're all uneven.
0:10:39 > 0:10:42We would make sure they're all safe and no trip hazards.
0:10:42 > 0:10:45- That'll be good. That would be really good.- Yes.
0:10:45 > 0:10:50Harry and David are going to relay the existing patio but Charlie's
0:10:50 > 0:10:53going one better and is replacing the stones and enlarging the area.
0:10:55 > 0:10:59So the patio area I've definitely extended it because it's
0:10:59 > 0:11:02- a bit mean at the moment. - It is, yes, very mean.
0:11:02 > 0:11:07- So definitely pushing it out further in front of your patio doors.- Yeah.
0:11:07 > 0:11:10Yes, thank you very much.
0:11:10 > 0:11:11Well, that's it.
0:11:11 > 0:11:14The pitch is over. The designers have done all they can.
0:11:14 > 0:11:16- Thank you.- Thank you.
0:11:17 > 0:11:21It's now time for Shona and Patricia to choose between Charlie's
0:11:21 > 0:11:24multipurpose zoning and the boys' terraced communal garden.
0:11:24 > 0:11:28So what did you think about this one, then?
0:11:28 > 0:11:31I like the steps and I like the entertaining area.
0:11:32 > 0:11:35I like this bit in the middle.
0:11:35 > 0:11:37- Yeah, that's nice.- I thought it was really good.
0:11:37 > 0:11:41We're dividing the garden into individual areas for the
0:11:41 > 0:11:44different generations, so as you go up you get younger.
0:11:44 > 0:11:46How about you, Charlie?
0:11:46 > 0:11:50Yeah, well, I did end up with a big deck up here in the sunshine
0:11:50 > 0:11:53and then I have got a zone for Amelia as well.
0:11:53 > 0:11:55- Nice.- Oh, perfect.
0:11:55 > 0:12:00These are excellent, having a lower bed there and a water feature.
0:12:00 > 0:12:02Amelia would really like that.
0:12:02 > 0:12:04Yes, I'm impressed.
0:12:04 > 0:12:06I'm impressed with both of them.
0:12:06 > 0:12:08I think you're thinking the same as me?
0:12:08 > 0:12:11Possibly, yes. Shall we go for it?
0:12:15 > 0:12:17- Hello.- Hello there.
0:12:17 > 0:12:19- Hello.- Right.
0:12:19 > 0:12:21We've looked at both of them and the winner is...
0:12:24 > 0:12:26Charlie!
0:12:26 > 0:12:29- Well done.- Thank you.
0:12:30 > 0:12:35We thought your designs were brilliant, absolutely brilliant,
0:12:35 > 0:12:40but we just in mind had Amelia and how we would like to use the garden.
0:12:40 > 0:12:43Oh, good, I'm looking forward to doing that one.
0:12:43 > 0:12:47Oh, dear. Harry's face says it all, but Charlie is thrilled.
0:12:47 > 0:12:50She's going to have to win the boys around, though, because she'll
0:12:50 > 0:12:58need their help to get all the elements of this garden finished.
0:13:00 > 0:13:03It's the first day of the build
0:13:03 > 0:13:07and with Charlie away tending to the finer details of her design,
0:13:07 > 0:13:10it's up to the expert team of landscapers -
0:13:10 > 0:13:11Leigh,
0:13:11 > 0:13:13Andy,
0:13:13 > 0:13:14Steve,
0:13:14 > 0:13:16and Bowen to crack on with the monster task
0:13:16 > 0:13:20of extending the patio to create Charlie's generous seating area.
0:13:22 > 0:13:24But they haven't even cleared all the pots off the old patio before
0:13:24 > 0:13:26they unearth a problem.
0:13:27 > 0:13:29Oh, no.
0:13:29 > 0:13:32- That's a bit naughty, isn't it?- It's a bit rotten.
0:13:32 > 0:13:35It's a big one. It's right out here, somewhere.
0:13:37 > 0:13:39It's just a concrete manhole chamber.
0:13:39 > 0:13:43It's basically for the run-off for the water from the gutters of
0:13:43 > 0:13:46the house, come through all the way down to the drain.
0:13:46 > 0:13:50But we didn't really know it was here so it's created
0:13:50 > 0:13:51a little bit of a problem.
0:13:51 > 0:13:55Let's get it cleared off and see what we can do.
0:13:57 > 0:13:59We've lost him. He's got a man down.
0:14:01 > 0:14:04Solving unforeseen problems like this will eat into the £5,000
0:14:04 > 0:14:08budget that Charlie has already fully allocated to the design.
0:14:08 > 0:14:12So whilst project manager Bowen hits the phone to try and source
0:14:12 > 0:14:14a low-cost manhole cover...
0:14:15 > 0:14:18No, I don't think we're going to be able to build around it
0:14:18 > 0:14:19to get it to that size.
0:14:21 > 0:14:25..the team cracks on with the patio so it won't cost them in time too.
0:14:32 > 0:14:34- Hello, mate, look what I've got for you.- Good lad.
0:14:34 > 0:14:36See if that fits in there.
0:14:36 > 0:14:40- Oh, like a glove on a chicken's leg.- Beautiful.
0:15:01 > 0:15:04By the time Charlie and her willing helpers Harry and David arrive,
0:15:04 > 0:15:06they've made great progress.
0:15:06 > 0:15:10The patio's laid, old shrubs that don't fit the new design have
0:15:10 > 0:15:13been uprooted, and the base for the new decking has been built.
0:15:17 > 0:15:22- It's a vigorous walk in the morning. - I know.- It'll get you geed up ready for all your jobs.
0:15:22 > 0:15:24Oh, nice, some good ones today.
0:15:24 > 0:15:26Yeah. This'll get you warm.
0:15:26 > 0:15:29- So the first thing - take the turf off for the path.- Lovely.
0:15:29 > 0:15:31Nice sweep of a curve.
0:15:31 > 0:15:33- All uphill?- All uphill.
0:15:33 > 0:15:35And then raised beds.
0:15:35 > 0:15:39You've got to get those done because I have to get the water feature in.
0:15:39 > 0:15:41- OK.- That's quite key.
0:15:41 > 0:15:43- You can get moving with the turf stripper.- Lovely!
0:15:43 > 0:15:45So off you go, boys.
0:15:45 > 0:15:47That's your turf stripper there.
0:15:52 > 0:15:55Oh! Push!
0:15:57 > 0:15:59Get the angle right.
0:15:59 > 0:16:00Look at this.
0:16:00 > 0:16:03Wow! This is making a difference, isn't it?
0:16:03 > 0:16:05Good work, guys.
0:16:05 > 0:16:08- Are you all right?- And the slabs are looking good.
0:16:08 > 0:16:10Yeah, that's right.
0:16:10 > 0:16:13Before they can think about firing up heavy machinery,
0:16:13 > 0:16:16Harry and David need to mark out the shape of the path.
0:16:18 > 0:16:19There we are.
0:16:19 > 0:16:22The arc of the path is key to Charlie's design
0:16:22 > 0:16:24since it will form the spine of the garden.
0:16:24 > 0:16:27The boys must get it right.
0:16:27 > 0:16:29Coming through, coming through.
0:16:29 > 0:16:31- Look at this.- We're coming through.
0:16:31 > 0:16:33The use of the path already.
0:16:33 > 0:16:36- How does it feel?- That feels a nice curve, boys. Very good.
0:16:36 > 0:16:39The turf has got to come up, you know.
0:16:40 > 0:16:42- So, yeah.- How are you feeling?
0:16:42 > 0:16:46- I'm thinking might just take it a bit...- A bit wider.
0:16:46 > 0:16:48A bit wider cos at the moment, look.
0:16:48 > 0:16:50You want to be able to walk up the garden path
0:16:50 > 0:16:53holding hands and it's a bit too cosy at the moment.
0:16:53 > 0:16:55Let me see. Be comfortable.
0:16:55 > 0:16:57- Not too tight.- How comfortable?
0:16:57 > 0:16:59That's too... That is...
0:16:59 > 0:17:01- A few drinks comfortable, or what?- Hello!
0:17:01 > 0:17:03Come on, in we go.
0:17:03 > 0:17:07- About, yeah.- Just a little. - Perfect.- Yeah, that's better.
0:17:07 > 0:17:09You've got lovely warm hands.
0:17:09 > 0:17:12You're not doing enough work. That's why you're not warm.
0:17:12 > 0:17:14Spank your hand.
0:17:14 > 0:17:18And the right one. Come on.
0:17:18 > 0:17:20And now they're all happy with the shape, they can bring in one of
0:17:20 > 0:17:24the big guns in the form of the turf cutter.
0:17:25 > 0:17:27Turf cutters like this
0:17:27 > 0:17:30start about £50 a day and it makes really light work
0:17:30 > 0:17:33of what can be quite a tedious job.
0:17:48 > 0:17:51- That was a good line, mate, well done.- Yeah.
0:17:53 > 0:17:55Right, on your way.
0:17:55 > 0:17:56ENGINE REVS
0:18:00 > 0:18:01THEY LAUGH
0:18:01 > 0:18:03What's happening there?
0:18:12 > 0:18:13ENGINE STOPS
0:18:13 > 0:18:17A good tip when using a turf cutter is to cut all the turf first
0:18:17 > 0:18:20before peeling off bits because if you start peeling off some
0:18:20 > 0:18:22bits and the turf cutter gets on an angle,
0:18:22 > 0:18:25and then you start cutting unevenly. So cut it all and then peel it up.
0:18:25 > 0:18:30A good tip, when you start to roll it up, cut it into manageable sizes.
0:18:30 > 0:18:32Don't try rolling and shifting large bits of turf.
0:18:32 > 0:18:36Lengths that are maybe a metre, a metre and a half should be fine.
0:19:04 > 0:19:07So this is going to be my hopscotch path,
0:19:07 > 0:19:10leading to the kids' play area here
0:19:10 > 0:19:13so there's going to be a bit of a climbing frame and a slide.
0:19:13 > 0:19:18I'm literally going to lay the slabs straight onto a bit of soil and
0:19:18 > 0:19:23sand, level with the lawn so that they can mow straight over it
0:19:23 > 0:19:26and then in five years' time,
0:19:26 > 0:19:29when they no longer want to play hopscotch,
0:19:29 > 0:19:34they can just be lifted up, reseeded and it's going to be fine.
0:19:34 > 0:19:36Back to lawn.
0:19:36 > 0:19:38It's all well and good, getting rid of the turf, Charlie.
0:19:38 > 0:19:41- Where's it going to go? - Not here.- That hole you dug there?
0:19:41 > 0:19:44No, no, no, cos we've got the raised beds to fill.
0:19:44 > 0:19:48- Yeah, down on the bottom. - Fill in the raised beds.
0:19:48 > 0:19:51I'm glad you've offered to do that job, well done!
0:19:51 > 0:19:53I didn't, you see. I kept quiet.
0:19:53 > 0:19:56You've learnt to be quiet when Charlie's, er...
0:19:56 > 0:19:57Yeah, that's good.
0:19:57 > 0:20:00Raised beds down there and don't forget there is
0:20:00 > 0:20:02- a raised bed at the back of the deck, as well.- OK.
0:20:02 > 0:20:04- We'll go there first.- Just walk round the garden
0:20:04 > 0:20:08with the wheelbarrow. Take it back from where it came.
0:20:08 > 0:20:12Recycling the turf is a great idea because getting rid of waste on
0:20:12 > 0:20:16any building project, whether inside or out, can easily bump the cost up.
0:20:17 > 0:20:20In a bid to give Shona the most she can get for her £5,000 budget,
0:20:20 > 0:20:22Charlie has an idea to run past her.
0:20:25 > 0:20:30- Shona, come and have a quick sit down and a quick chat.- Right.
0:20:30 > 0:20:33- What am I in for?- It's not difficult, honest.- OK.
0:20:33 > 0:20:37- This area here is for your granddaughter, yeah?- Right, yeah.
0:20:37 > 0:20:41And we're going to have the curve of the bamboos hiding it.
0:20:41 > 0:20:43There's going to be the play equipment there.
0:20:43 > 0:20:48- I did have on the design an archway with planters.- You did, yeah.
0:20:48 > 0:20:52But I'm thinking of being a little bit more artistic and making
0:20:52 > 0:20:56an artistic piece of trellis for climbers...
0:20:56 > 0:21:00- Right.- But it will be an entranceway, a fun entranceway.
0:21:00 > 0:21:02I'm thinking.
0:21:04 > 0:21:07This is going to be using, like, natural branches.
0:21:07 > 0:21:10- Oh, right. That sounds a good idea. - Yeah.
0:21:10 > 0:21:13It's going to literally be
0:21:13 > 0:21:19a frame with a door at, sort of, child height.
0:21:19 > 0:21:23Basically when you're sat over on the deck you're going to see that.
0:21:23 > 0:21:27- Mm-hm.- A bit of a Hansel and Gretel type theme to it.
0:21:27 > 0:21:29That sounds lovely.
0:21:29 > 0:21:31She'd love that, yes, something different.
0:21:35 > 0:21:39Harry and David have moved on to making the raised beds,
0:21:39 > 0:21:42but Charlie, having secured the thumbs up from Shona for the gateway
0:21:42 > 0:21:45to the new play area, now needs to source materials to make it.
0:21:47 > 0:21:50You boys are very quiet. Concentrating, are we?
0:21:51 > 0:21:54- Just digging a hole. - Digging a hole.
0:21:54 > 0:21:56What are you up to?
0:21:56 > 0:21:58I'm just sculpting.
0:21:58 > 0:22:00Very cool.
0:22:00 > 0:22:02That sounds fun. What are you sculpting?
0:22:02 > 0:22:06I'm going to make a very Hansel and Gretel entranceway
0:22:06 > 0:22:08to the play area.
0:22:08 > 0:22:10Oh, wow, that sounds fun.
0:22:10 > 0:22:14Mmm. See, when you're boss you to get to do all the fun jobs.
0:22:14 > 0:22:17When you're labourers you get to do the really boring stuff.
0:22:17 > 0:22:20I don't get to do the fun things when I'm the boss.
0:22:20 > 0:22:21Dave, let's do it.
0:22:21 > 0:22:25Charlie's decided to use these new sleepers and that's going to
0:22:25 > 0:22:27marry in with the slabs really nicely.
0:22:31 > 0:22:34Beautiful. What we've done on the corner here, we've actually used
0:22:34 > 0:22:38a brick joint so we've overlapped the joint of the timber and that's
0:22:38 > 0:22:40going to make a stronger structure
0:22:40 > 0:22:42and I also think it looks nice, as well.
0:22:42 > 0:22:45Charlie needs an expert landscaper to help her with her big plan.
0:22:48 > 0:22:53So you might think you've finished but over here the entranceway to
0:22:53 > 0:22:58the play area is going to be doing something like this.
0:22:58 > 0:23:00It's like a child's done it.
0:23:00 > 0:23:02- Have you had your drawing pencils out?- Yeah!
0:23:02 > 0:23:08I don't want the doorway to be too tall so what that sort of height.
0:23:08 > 0:23:09Four foot by two?
0:23:09 > 0:23:13So if we can make a frame up - want some eaves
0:23:13 > 0:23:16and a chimney off to the side, maybe that side or whatever.
0:23:16 > 0:23:19- Window, sort of thing. - Yeah, one or two.
0:23:19 > 0:23:22There's some nice decking left so we'll make it out of decking and...
0:23:22 > 0:23:24Yeah? And just concrete it in.
0:23:24 > 0:23:27Put the frame into the floor so it's nice and solid
0:23:27 > 0:23:29and then we can work off the frame.
0:23:29 > 0:23:31Rustic, Hansel and Gretel.
0:23:31 > 0:23:33We're using all that over there.
0:23:33 > 0:23:37- Yeah, we can screw that to it.- Yeah? - Yeah, no problem.
0:23:39 > 0:23:43Meanwhile, the brothers are cracking on with the path and pegging
0:23:43 > 0:23:46in some shuttering to form the edges of the bound gravel surface.
0:23:57 > 0:24:00These 4 x 1s are perfect for edging the path.
0:24:00 > 0:24:01Because we're creating a curve,
0:24:01 > 0:24:04what you can do, you can soak them overnight in water and that
0:24:04 > 0:24:07will make them more flexible so you get more of an acute angle.
0:24:07 > 0:24:10You can cut notches into the back of them and that will help them
0:24:10 > 0:24:12as well, but because this angle isn't too bad,
0:24:12 > 0:24:15we're just using them as they are and just pegging them as we go.
0:24:20 > 0:24:22Good. One window.
0:24:29 > 0:24:33Leigh and Charlie are moving on apace with the entrance to the play area
0:24:33 > 0:24:37whilst Andy is finishing the ramp up to the decking area, which will
0:24:37 > 0:24:41future proof access to that seating area for all the generations.
0:24:44 > 0:24:47And David starts the Herculean task of bringing in the hard-core
0:24:47 > 0:24:50for the base of that lovely curved path.
0:25:38 > 0:25:40- Into that point.- Yeah.
0:25:40 > 0:25:42Just so that there's some lavender,
0:25:42 > 0:25:46- there's a bay tree there to give it a little bit of height.- Yeah.
0:25:48 > 0:25:51Pat doesn't like sitting in full sun.
0:25:51 > 0:25:54- The cat.- Not the cat, Pat!
0:25:54 > 0:25:55As in Postman.
0:25:55 > 0:25:57CHARLIE SIGHS
0:26:05 > 0:26:09Leigh's using natural ash prunings to clad the frame and make more of
0:26:09 > 0:26:11a screen for the play area.
0:26:11 > 0:26:13You can buy pea sticks similar to these.
0:26:13 > 0:26:16They're a by-product of coppicing and are fantastic for creating
0:26:16 > 0:26:18all sorts of structures for the garden.
0:26:20 > 0:26:24So this is a bit of fun for Amelia but also it'll be
0:26:24 > 0:26:27a really good place for Pat to, you know,
0:26:27 > 0:26:31maybe put a bowl of water for the birds or some feeders on it.
0:26:31 > 0:26:34Yeah, it's a bit different, isn't it?
0:26:38 > 0:26:41Coppicing is a form of woodland management that
0:26:41 > 0:26:43has been practised for thousands of years.
0:26:46 > 0:26:50Essentially it's the harvesting of wooden poles by cutting off
0:26:50 > 0:26:53growth from trees like hazel and willow down to the base
0:26:53 > 0:26:55thus harvesting long poles.
0:26:55 > 0:26:59This process is repeated every seven to 25 years,
0:26:59 > 0:27:03depending on how thick and long you want your poles to be.
0:27:03 > 0:27:06There are copses all over rural Britain and one coppice
0:27:06 > 0:27:09worker, who was practised his trade for nearly 60 years,
0:27:09 > 0:27:11is Alan Waters.
0:27:11 > 0:27:15The ideal crop is a ten to 12 foot pole.
0:27:15 > 0:27:17A rod.
0:27:19 > 0:27:21That's what you're looking for.
0:27:24 > 0:27:27The most common uses for coppiced hazel today are for making
0:27:27 > 0:27:31hurdles for sheep and garden fencing, thatching spars and plant
0:27:31 > 0:27:34supports for the garden, especially pea sticks for supporting
0:27:34 > 0:27:39pea plants and bean poles as a frame for runner beans to climb up.
0:27:39 > 0:27:42However, a skilled coppice worker like Alan can make these
0:27:42 > 0:27:45practical objects into decorative sculptures for the garden.
0:27:49 > 0:27:52Alan places seven long poles in a mould to make the correct
0:27:52 > 0:27:54shape for the tepee
0:27:54 > 0:27:56before tying it at the top.
0:27:56 > 0:27:59Just trying to hold them.
0:27:59 > 0:28:02Hazel is pliable, especially when warm,
0:28:02 > 0:28:05so can be manipulated to make it rope-like.
0:28:07 > 0:28:09You find a hole.
0:28:09 > 0:28:11Poke it down
0:28:11 > 0:28:13as far as you can and then hold it tight
0:28:13 > 0:28:16so you can poke it down
0:28:18 > 0:28:19and you pull it down.
0:28:21 > 0:28:25Then to give climbing plants something to hold on to as
0:28:25 > 0:28:29they grow up the support, Alan weaves more hazel through the frame.
0:28:29 > 0:28:33By using a coppiced hazel, whether you grow anything up it or not,
0:28:33 > 0:28:36or just use it for height in your garden,
0:28:36 > 0:28:38it gives you something to look at.
0:28:40 > 0:28:42And because it's made of natural materials,
0:28:42 > 0:28:44it blends beautifully into the garden.
0:28:48 > 0:28:51Which is why Charlie has chosen to use it on her quirky new
0:28:51 > 0:28:54entrance to the play area in Northampton.
0:28:57 > 0:29:01Out front, the plants have arrived and just in time because most of
0:29:01 > 0:29:04the hard landscaping is finished and the raised beds are being
0:29:04 > 0:29:06filled with compost ready to be planted up.
0:29:10 > 0:29:13Meanwhile, it's Harry's turn with a wheelbarrow as
0:29:13 > 0:29:16he brings in two tonnes of bound gravel to top the path.
0:29:17 > 0:29:20We're putting down the self-binding gravel on this path and it's on
0:29:20 > 0:29:24a slope so it's a great choice for that because it'll knit down
0:29:24 > 0:29:26really tightly and have a lovely finish.
0:29:26 > 0:29:29It'll also link really nicely in with the wood and the paving at
0:29:29 > 0:29:33the bottom so overall it's going to unify the whole garden as one.
0:29:33 > 0:29:37- Right, Charlie.- Yo!- I found these outside. Where do you want 'em?
0:29:37 > 0:29:41Right, we need to replicate that curve
0:29:41 > 0:29:46- coming around here. Yeah?- Oh, OK.
0:29:46 > 0:29:48Before David marks that out,
0:29:48 > 0:29:52the chaps get the play equipment in so he can get the proportions right.
0:29:55 > 0:29:58To mirror the arc of the path, Charlie's design has a row of
0:29:58 > 0:30:01eight bamboos to edge the play area and they all need to be planted.
0:30:04 > 0:30:06- Like that, yeah.- OK, so the bed's kind of there, in a way.
0:30:06 > 0:30:09OK, cool, I can start that then.
0:30:09 > 0:30:11Then we follow it round, just into this?
0:30:11 > 0:30:15- Into here, say, like that kind of curve?- Yes.
0:30:16 > 0:30:20The bamboo will provide an evergreen living screen that will sway
0:30:20 > 0:30:22and rustle in the breeze.
0:30:24 > 0:30:27But before there's any chance of that happening...
0:30:28 > 0:30:30David needs to prepare the planting bed.
0:30:34 > 0:30:36That's just the start of the planting,
0:30:36 > 0:30:39there are 56 scented plants to go into the garden, too.
0:30:42 > 0:30:46This is going to be our lovely, scented lavender walkway that
0:30:46 > 0:30:50will bring you up into this sort of Mediterranean decking area.
0:30:50 > 0:30:53We've got a bay tree for a bit of scent and for cooking.
0:30:53 > 0:30:56We've got lavenders.
0:30:56 > 0:30:59We have Steve who's fragrantly scented as well,
0:30:59 > 0:31:04working away at the raised bed there, which is going to be for Pat
0:31:04 > 0:31:07to potter in when she's sat up here,
0:31:07 > 0:31:10if she does sit in the sun because she's not really keen on the sun.
0:31:10 > 0:31:13That's really Pat's area down the bottom.
0:31:24 > 0:31:26It's a bit tough going digging the soil.
0:31:26 > 0:31:27It's going to be worth it, though,
0:31:27 > 0:31:29because we are putting in a native birch, a betula,
0:31:29 > 0:31:31and it is going to be positioned by the deck,
0:31:31 > 0:31:33so it'll give a bit of height to this area
0:31:33 > 0:31:35but also provide a nice bit of dappled shade.
0:31:35 > 0:31:37As you can see, the roots are bare.
0:31:37 > 0:31:40It's a bare root and that means we can plant it between...
0:31:40 > 0:31:43Basically when the tree is dormant, so between the time when the
0:31:43 > 0:31:47leaves fall off and the time when the leaves come back in spring.
0:31:47 > 0:31:49That's great because it means it'll be half the price if you buy
0:31:49 > 0:31:51a tree that has been grown in a container.
0:31:51 > 0:31:53So that's a real plus.
0:31:53 > 0:31:56Just to give the tree a really good head start, we're putting in
0:31:56 > 0:31:59some good quality topsoil and then the original soil on top.
0:31:59 > 0:32:01That's going to give it a bit of substance
0:32:01 > 0:32:02and hold it firm in the hole.
0:32:04 > 0:32:06When planting a tree, it's a good thing to look at
0:32:06 > 0:32:09where the soil level is because that is where it has been dug out
0:32:09 > 0:32:11at the nursery, so that's where you should plant it.
0:32:11 > 0:32:13Halfway through backfilling the hole,
0:32:13 > 0:32:16firm the soil down to get rid of any air pockets.
0:32:16 > 0:32:17After planting,
0:32:17 > 0:32:22water it thoroughly and keep watering regularly for the first year.
0:32:22 > 0:32:25Also, because it hasn't got the root system to anchor it into the soil,
0:32:25 > 0:32:27it's really important to post it.
0:32:27 > 0:32:30It keeps it strong and firm and helps it grow.
0:32:31 > 0:32:34Charlie, meanwhile, is planting up the raised beds near the house.
0:32:36 > 0:32:40So this is going to be a lovely spring-raised bed.
0:32:40 > 0:32:43I'm putting the hellebores up here because you sort of,
0:32:43 > 0:32:47when they're at ground level, you sort of miss how beautiful
0:32:47 > 0:32:50the flowers are and they're the type of flower that you
0:32:50 > 0:32:53really want to look up into, so putting them in the raised bed,
0:32:53 > 0:32:54when you're sat down there,
0:32:54 > 0:32:57you'll be able to see the full beauty of them.
0:33:05 > 0:33:08The addition of a spherical water feature will also provide
0:33:08 > 0:33:11a relaxing soundtrack when the family are on the patio.
0:33:13 > 0:33:16This water feature is a really straightforward simple kit.
0:33:16 > 0:33:18It comes with a small reservoir.
0:33:18 > 0:33:21This is slate effect. It's actually resin,
0:33:21 > 0:33:23so it's very light to move around.
0:33:23 > 0:33:29The tendency is, because the reservoir is circular, that you want
0:33:29 > 0:33:31to put the pebbles or the gravel or the shale,
0:33:31 > 0:33:34which is what we're using here, and follow that circle,
0:33:34 > 0:33:35but it looks a bit odd
0:33:35 > 0:33:39so what I'm going to do is blend
0:33:39 > 0:33:43the shale in and around under the planting.
0:33:43 > 0:33:47That way, it'll look a lot more natural
0:33:47 > 0:33:50and it'll also help suppress quite a lot of the weeds
0:33:50 > 0:33:51that could come up.
0:33:51 > 0:33:57As for keeping the water clear, it's best to treat the water
0:33:57 > 0:34:01straightaway, while it is clear, not when it's gone green.
0:34:01 > 0:34:04It says just add two teaspoons,
0:34:04 > 0:34:07so I'm just going to pop that one there
0:34:07 > 0:34:12and then Shona will have to retreat it once every six weeks.
0:34:12 > 0:34:15Safe for the birds, safe for children,
0:34:15 > 0:34:17so this will be really quite a tactile area,
0:34:17 > 0:34:19because we've got all the scented plants,
0:34:19 > 0:34:23lavenders, thymes and rosemary.
0:34:23 > 0:34:26We've got water that will give a nice,
0:34:26 > 0:34:31gentle sound and Amelia can touch it quite safely and the birds
0:34:31 > 0:34:34will come and bathe and drink, as well.
0:34:35 > 0:34:37Now that the bed is prepared,
0:34:37 > 0:34:39Harry and David can get on with planting the bamboos.
0:34:47 > 0:34:50Charlie has chosen a variety that won't get too tall
0:34:50 > 0:34:51and take over the plot.
0:34:51 > 0:34:55Bamboo has something of a bad reputation for spreading like crazy
0:34:55 > 0:34:58in the garden, but expert Bruce Jordan knows the difference
0:34:58 > 0:35:04between the unruly species and the garden-worthy types.
0:35:04 > 0:35:06One is the Pseudosasa,
0:35:06 > 0:35:09the other one is a bamboo called Phyllostachys.
0:35:09 > 0:35:12Neither of those have got a common name, so it's quite difficult,
0:35:12 > 0:35:15but Pseudosasa was introduced by the Victorians
0:35:15 > 0:35:16and is a real running bamboo,
0:35:16 > 0:35:22will spread without worry across your garden, come up through tarmac.
0:35:23 > 0:35:25Phyllostachys, on the other hand, is much calmer.
0:35:25 > 0:35:28It can wander. I call it wandering.
0:35:28 > 0:35:32It's not really hugely invasive, but it wanders around.
0:35:32 > 0:35:36These wanderers send out runners, which are shoots just below
0:35:36 > 0:35:38the surface of the soil.
0:35:38 > 0:35:40Along their length, they sprout further shoots
0:35:40 > 0:35:42and can quickly run amok.
0:35:42 > 0:35:46Luckily, not all bamboos are badly behaved.
0:35:46 > 0:35:49The best thing to do is to look at Fargesia bamboos.
0:35:49 > 0:35:52They definitely will not run. They form clumps.
0:35:52 > 0:35:55The clump can slowly get bigger, but it's a clump.
0:35:55 > 0:35:57It won't send out any runners.
0:35:57 > 0:36:02They will grow almost in deep shade where there is very little sun.
0:36:02 > 0:36:06They will grow in the sun and they will grow in kind of half sun
0:36:06 > 0:36:10and shade. Pretty much anywhere in the garden, you can grow a Fargesia.
0:36:10 > 0:36:13And once you've selected the right bamboo for your garden,
0:36:13 > 0:36:14they have so much to offer.
0:36:15 > 0:36:19One of the great things about bamboo is they create an amazing atmosphere
0:36:19 > 0:36:20in the garden.
0:36:20 > 0:36:23This is their look pretty much 12 months of the year,
0:36:23 > 0:36:26so they're always looking good, even in the middle of winter.
0:36:26 > 0:36:28On a cold, frosty - even snowy - day,
0:36:28 > 0:36:31you can come out, your bamboo is smiling.
0:36:31 > 0:36:34Particularly ones with golden stems, they glow.
0:36:34 > 0:36:36They glow on a grey, miserable day.
0:36:41 > 0:36:45Charlie has wisely selected a Fargesia for Patricia and Shona,
0:36:45 > 0:36:47which will keep itself to itself.
0:36:47 > 0:36:50Now they're all in the ground, they're looking stunning.
0:36:53 > 0:36:55To make the patio area more intimate,
0:36:55 > 0:36:58Charlie has added an off-the-shelf flat pack pergola,
0:36:58 > 0:37:00available at most garden centres,
0:37:00 > 0:37:03but she's turning it into something special
0:37:03 > 0:37:05by adding a beautiful climber.
0:37:05 > 0:37:11So I'm just trailing this Clematis armandii up over the pergola.
0:37:11 > 0:37:15It's evergreen, got lovely white scented flowers
0:37:15 > 0:37:17and being evergreen,
0:37:17 > 0:37:20this will always look as a nice archway into the garden.
0:37:24 > 0:37:25As the last plants go in
0:37:25 > 0:37:31and the final titivations are completed, this garden is finished.
0:37:37 > 0:37:40Before they called the Garden Rescue team, Shona and Patricia's garden
0:37:40 > 0:37:43was an unloved, neglected, featureless plot
0:37:43 > 0:37:46on an unforgiving slope, not inviting
0:37:46 > 0:37:50to any of the four generations that desperately wanted to use it.
0:37:54 > 0:37:58Now it's had a £5,000 makeover and Charlie has spent every penny
0:37:58 > 0:38:02creating inviting areas of the garden for each of them to enjoy.
0:38:02 > 0:38:07She's spent £450 on a sinuous, bound-gravel path with
0:38:07 > 0:38:10a gentle gradient to make getting to the top of the garden easier.
0:38:12 > 0:38:14The decking area at the top of the garden was a big outlay
0:38:14 > 0:38:19at £850, but it catches the late afternoon sun
0:38:19 > 0:38:21and is the perfect place for a sundowner.
0:38:24 > 0:38:27The play area, with its bespoke Hansel and Gretel entrance,
0:38:27 > 0:38:31climbing frame and hopscotch will delight Amelia for hours.
0:38:31 > 0:38:33So it was well worth the £500 price tag.
0:38:36 > 0:38:39The patio has been relayed with Indian sandstone and extended
0:38:39 > 0:38:42to be both usable and safe.
0:38:42 > 0:38:45It's a sociable space now for all the family to use
0:38:45 > 0:38:48and came in at a substantial £900.
0:38:50 > 0:38:53The 143 plants and the child-safe water feature
0:38:53 > 0:38:55totalled £1,100
0:38:55 > 0:38:59and add life, texture and year-round interest to this garden.
0:39:01 > 0:39:03Time to find out if Charlie has delivered.
0:39:03 > 0:39:05- Come round here.- Can't wait.
0:39:07 > 0:39:09So you can open your eyes now.
0:39:11 > 0:39:13- Oh, my goodness.- Oh...
0:39:15 > 0:39:16- Is that good?- I love it.
0:39:16 > 0:39:19Pat, you're quiet.
0:39:19 > 0:39:21It's been a hard slog, but, by that reaction,
0:39:21 > 0:39:22I think they absolutely love it.
0:39:22 > 0:39:25- Makes it all worth it, doesn't it? - It does, yeah.
0:39:25 > 0:39:26No, I'm saying I love it.
0:39:28 > 0:39:32- So you wanted a bigger entertainment space.- We have, yes.
0:39:32 > 0:39:37- You've got this big area here.- This is the bit I really like along here.
0:39:37 > 0:39:39Shall we wander up your...
0:39:39 > 0:39:45You lead the way up your lavender walkway up to your hot seating area.
0:39:45 > 0:39:50- Really nice.- Pots out as well. - So much to see.
0:39:50 > 0:39:55- So all these lavenders will spill over.- All my favourites.- Yes.
0:39:55 > 0:39:58- All my favourites.- Oh, my goodness.
0:39:58 > 0:40:01So it's a nice easy path to walk up. You've got two ways of getting up.
0:40:01 > 0:40:06- You can either step up... - I want to see everything.
0:40:06 > 0:40:09Another raised bed for you, Mum.
0:40:09 > 0:40:12That's perfect, just perfect.
0:40:12 > 0:40:15Is that the bay we can put in the food?
0:40:15 > 0:40:17Yes, but there's lots of herbs in this garden.
0:40:17 > 0:40:21You've got bay, you've got sage, thyme, rosemary.
0:40:21 > 0:40:26You've got the whole lot. It's overloaded with aromatic foliage.
0:40:26 > 0:40:28Brilliant, brilliant.
0:40:28 > 0:40:32Then, so that access is really easy, we've got a ramp.
0:40:32 > 0:40:36- A ramp down there as well, Mum. - All ready for my...- Wheelchair.
0:40:36 > 0:40:38I don't think you'll ever be in a wheelchair.
0:40:38 > 0:40:40You've got too much get up and go, Pat.
0:40:40 > 0:40:46- That's lovely. I love that path. - It's a lovely colour, isn't it?
0:40:46 > 0:40:47Sort of Mediterranean.
0:40:47 > 0:40:50- Beautiful. I really like that. - Absolutely gorgeous.
0:40:50 > 0:40:54I'm thrilled to bits with this. Thrilled to bits, I am.
0:40:54 > 0:40:56You can do all your gardening now, look at it.
0:40:56 > 0:40:59I will have such a lovely summer this summer.
0:40:59 > 0:41:03And then you've got the view of Amelia's area there.
0:41:03 > 0:41:07That is fantastic. I'm glad you changed that.
0:41:07 > 0:41:11- I'm really glad you've changed that. - She's got a hopscotch as well.
0:41:11 > 0:41:15Yeah, we got the hopscotch. We haven't tested it yet. Maybe later.
0:41:17 > 0:41:21- So that's her little screened-off area.- She will love that.
0:41:21 > 0:41:23I love the bamboo.
0:41:23 > 0:41:27And with the bamboo, I mean, it's clump forming, very slow growing.
0:41:27 > 0:41:31If you don't want it to get really tall, you can cut it as a hedge.
0:41:31 > 0:41:33I like it. I love that, yes.
0:41:33 > 0:41:38But it sort of screens and it's not so obvious where the play area is.
0:41:38 > 0:41:44And then we wander on down to your... Your shady patio area.
0:41:44 > 0:41:49- These are my nice raised beds.- Yes. - Perfect, no bending now.
0:41:49 > 0:41:54No, and I have to say, they are really nice just to sit on.
0:41:56 > 0:41:59- They are just at that right height. - They are, yes.
0:41:59 > 0:42:03So even if you've not got the furniture out, you can just perch.
0:42:03 > 0:42:04Sit on there, yes.
0:42:04 > 0:42:08- Oh, that's wonderful. I love that.- Nice sound, isn't it?
0:42:08 > 0:42:10It is nice, really nice.
0:42:10 > 0:42:14And the great thing about moving water, with these scented plants,
0:42:14 > 0:42:17you know, your rosemary, this is Christmas box, the water will
0:42:17 > 0:42:21pick that scent up so it will make this area even more scented.
0:42:21 > 0:42:24- Of course, yes, that's beautiful. - What colour is the clematis?
0:42:24 > 0:42:27- It is a white one. - That will be lovely up there.
0:42:27 > 0:42:31- It is scented as well, evergreen. - Yes, smells lovely.- So pleased.
0:42:31 > 0:42:34You can send your daughters up there with the barbecue and all her
0:42:34 > 0:42:38mates and you're sat down here, nice and quiet.
0:42:38 > 0:42:43Really thrilled with it, I am. I'm really thrilled. Excellent.
0:42:44 > 0:42:47Shona and Patricia desperately wanted a garden they could relax and
0:42:47 > 0:42:51potter about in and that all four generations of family would enjoy.
0:42:51 > 0:42:53What's up here? Look.
0:42:56 > 0:42:59£5,000 was a serious investment to get the garden of their dreams.
0:42:59 > 0:43:02Do Shona and Patricia think their money was well spent?
0:43:04 > 0:43:07Definitely good value for money. Definitely.
0:43:08 > 0:43:10CHEERING
0:43:10 > 0:43:11Well done, Amelia.
