0:00:02 > 0:00:04With her can-do attitude, love of simple gardens

0:00:04 > 0:00:06and decades of experience,

0:00:06 > 0:00:10Charlie Dimmock is one of Britain's best-loved gardeners...

0:00:10 > 0:00:12Looking good, boys!

0:00:12 > 0:00:15..but the new kids on the gardening block are the Rich brothers.

0:00:15 > 0:00:16We want to be the brothers

0:00:16 > 0:00:19that change people's perceptions of gardens.

0:00:19 > 0:00:22Winners of multiple medals at the Chelsea Flower Show...

0:00:22 > 0:00:25- Oh, look at it turn. - Wow, it's amazing, isn't it?

0:00:25 > 0:00:28..the boys have become known for their dramatic outdoor spaces.

0:00:30 > 0:00:34Now these two different generations of gardening are going head-to-head.

0:00:34 > 0:00:38I know they've got a gold medal, but I can come up with a few ideas.

0:00:38 > 0:00:42They're meeting frustrated garden owners across the country...

0:00:42 > 0:00:44Not a lot going on, is there?

0:00:44 > 0:00:45Not a lot!

0:00:45 > 0:00:47I don't know what to do with it.

0:00:47 > 0:00:49..and will each pitch them a design, based on their needs...

0:00:49 > 0:00:51Wow!

0:00:51 > 0:00:52..and budget.

0:00:52 > 0:00:53Oh, that sounds amazing.

0:00:53 > 0:00:55It doesn't look like it could be our garden.

0:00:55 > 0:00:57- The winner...- Charlie!

0:00:57 > 0:00:58Yeah!

0:00:58 > 0:01:00..brings their design to life...

0:01:00 > 0:01:02Hold on, hold on.

0:01:02 > 0:01:03Sweet as a nut.

0:01:03 > 0:01:05..and the loser has to help them build it.

0:01:05 > 0:01:07Keep working, keep working, boy!

0:01:07 > 0:01:09Whoa, whoa, whoa, easy!

0:01:09 > 0:01:11This is what happens...

0:01:11 > 0:01:14Just get on with it, sometime today would be good!

0:01:14 > 0:01:16..when different styles collide...

0:01:16 > 0:01:18I think your brother's throwing the toys out of his pram.

0:01:18 > 0:01:20Right, are we doing this?

0:01:20 > 0:01:23..to turn garden dreams into reality.

0:01:23 > 0:01:24- Open your eyes.- Oh!

0:01:24 > 0:01:27Oh, it's lovely!

0:01:27 > 0:01:29Wow!

0:01:29 > 0:01:30Look at that!

0:01:30 > 0:01:33Wow! It's not our garden!

0:01:40 > 0:01:42It's time for Charlie and the Rich brothers

0:01:42 > 0:01:44to find out today's garden challenge.

0:01:47 > 0:01:49This is Will and Kate and their two boys from Hampshire,

0:01:49 > 0:01:53and they want this usable, family friendly space.

0:01:53 > 0:01:55Oh, nearly!

0:01:55 > 0:01:57- Try again. - What do you think, Ruben?

0:01:58 > 0:02:02Will and Kate met 12 years ago in London.

0:02:02 > 0:02:04They bonded over a love of travel,

0:02:04 > 0:02:07and then spent eight years travelling the world,

0:02:07 > 0:02:09living in as many countries as possible.

0:02:13 > 0:02:17But 18 months ago, they decided to put down roots in Whitchurch

0:02:17 > 0:02:19and start a family.

0:02:19 > 0:02:22So we bought this house last year,

0:02:22 > 0:02:26and before that we were living in New Zealand for a while

0:02:26 > 0:02:28and Canada and Ireland.

0:02:28 > 0:02:30Will being from New Zealand and me from the UK,

0:02:30 > 0:02:33we decided to come back, really, to have a family,

0:02:33 > 0:02:37and lean on the support of our family, my family, as well,

0:02:37 > 0:02:39to help with that.

0:02:39 > 0:02:41Is that a teeny, tiny one, there?

0:02:41 > 0:02:43Whilst travelling, the couple spent time

0:02:43 > 0:02:46in some of the most beautiful environments in the world,

0:02:46 > 0:02:49and want a garden that reflects their passion for nature.

0:02:50 > 0:02:53I guess we do consider ourselves to be quite eco-friendly,

0:02:53 > 0:02:56so we try and encourage that in the children, as well,

0:02:56 > 0:02:59just going out and about and giving them fresh air,

0:02:59 > 0:03:02so they actually understand what the environment's about.

0:03:07 > 0:03:11An eco-friendly garden is well within our designers' remit

0:03:11 > 0:03:14but there is a rather large problem with this plot

0:03:14 > 0:03:16that will need to be solved first.

0:03:16 > 0:03:18I'll show you the garden next.

0:03:18 > 0:03:20Oh, what does that mean?

0:03:20 > 0:03:21Wow!

0:03:21 > 0:03:23Wow? Understatement!

0:03:23 > 0:03:25My goodness, look at that drop!

0:03:25 > 0:03:28- It's like a cliff.- You wouldn't let your children out in that.- No.

0:03:28 > 0:03:30And there's barely a fence there, as well, is there?

0:03:30 > 0:03:34- Safety is a massive part, especially with two young boys.- Yeah.

0:03:34 > 0:03:37When you've got a toddler and a baby, yes,

0:03:37 > 0:03:39it's not very safe for them to be out here,

0:03:39 > 0:03:41so we've got temporary fencing up.

0:03:41 > 0:03:44One of our high priorities is to put proper fencing up

0:03:44 > 0:03:46to make it nice and safe for them.

0:03:46 > 0:03:49The difference between the plot and the house is huge -

0:03:49 > 0:03:52a vertiginous 1.8 metre drop,

0:03:52 > 0:03:55but that hasn't deterred Will from having a go.

0:03:55 > 0:03:58What I have done in the garden so far

0:03:58 > 0:04:00is I have tried to create a vegetable patch,

0:04:00 > 0:04:04which was partly successful, partly failed,

0:04:04 > 0:04:07but I managed to prioritise the chicken coop

0:04:07 > 0:04:11over some of the interior redecorating of the house,

0:04:11 > 0:04:12much to my wife's disgust!

0:04:16 > 0:04:17This bizarre back yard

0:04:17 > 0:04:21may be the last place you'd expect to find a good life garden,

0:04:21 > 0:04:23but this is a couple who clearly want their plot

0:04:23 > 0:04:25to reflect their values...

0:04:27 > 0:04:29..but, having bought their new house,

0:04:29 > 0:04:31they have limited resources to spend.

0:04:31 > 0:04:35So, the budget for our garden is £2,500.

0:04:35 > 0:04:38It's not a huge amount of money but it's not a big garden,

0:04:38 > 0:04:41so I think if it's spent wisely, and the designs are good,

0:04:41 > 0:04:44then I think they can really do a lot with the space.

0:04:44 > 0:04:46I think a lot of it is going to go on this fence,

0:04:46 > 0:04:49making something which looks great and is also very safe.

0:04:49 > 0:04:53Yeah, so, basically, we're going to spend most of the budget on that,

0:04:53 > 0:04:55so we're going to have to be quite creative with what's left

0:04:55 > 0:04:58to give them a garden that they really like.

0:04:58 > 0:05:00- Yeah.- Definitely.

0:05:00 > 0:05:02Thinking caps on.

0:05:02 > 0:05:06£2,500 is still a good chunk of money,

0:05:06 > 0:05:09but with safety the main concern in this garden,

0:05:09 > 0:05:13our designers are going to have to be clever with the cash

0:05:13 > 0:05:15if they also want to give the couple

0:05:15 > 0:05:18the eco-friendly country lifestyle garden they're hoping for.

0:05:20 > 0:05:24With this garden posing so many structural problems,

0:05:24 > 0:05:28the next task for our intrepid designers is to make a site visit.

0:05:36 > 0:05:38So, they're heading to Whitchurch

0:05:38 > 0:05:41to see if that drop is as scary as it looks.

0:05:42 > 0:05:43My goodness me.

0:05:43 > 0:05:45What have you noticed there, Charlie?

0:05:45 > 0:05:47That's a long way down!

0:05:47 > 0:05:49That's the biggest drop I've ever seen, without a fence.

0:05:49 > 0:05:51- That's dangerous.- Dangerous.

0:05:51 > 0:05:54But, look - sunshine pouring in there, lovely sun trap,

0:05:54 > 0:05:57- that's got to be good. - Very good for the veggies.

0:05:57 > 0:06:00- Veggies, fruit, sunflowers. - Chickens enjoying themselves.

0:06:00 > 0:06:01Yep. Mooching around.

0:06:01 > 0:06:04It's quite cluttered at the moment, so get rid of that clutter.

0:06:04 > 0:06:07- Yep.- Ideas budding already, look at that,

0:06:07 > 0:06:09look at that. What are you thinking?

0:06:09 > 0:06:12You're going to get more inspiration from inside, are you?

0:06:12 > 0:06:13You seem to know us well, yeah.

0:06:13 > 0:06:15We're going to head upstairs, put the kettle on.

0:06:15 > 0:06:18- Careful of the steps, boys. - Oh, cheers, Mum.

0:06:18 > 0:06:19- Thank you.- Very good.

0:06:19 > 0:06:21There is a lot going on in the garden,

0:06:21 > 0:06:25and the boys are keen to see if inside the house is the same.

0:06:25 > 0:06:27Oh, this is like a completely different feeling, isn't it?

0:06:27 > 0:06:29Yeah, this is lovely.

0:06:29 > 0:06:31I'm initially thinking, considering they like eco-friendliness,

0:06:31 > 0:06:33the sustainability thing,

0:06:33 > 0:06:36I'd expect it to be more rustic and organic, but it's not at all, is it?

0:06:36 > 0:06:38- No.- It's got that kind of Scandi, modern, clean feeling.

0:06:38 > 0:06:41Yeah, quite minimal, with the Scandinavian design.

0:06:41 > 0:06:42While outside, Charlie's finding out

0:06:42 > 0:06:45what the couple's horticultural priorities really are.

0:06:47 > 0:06:51I notice there's lots of vegetables and fruit and herbs about.

0:06:51 > 0:06:52Are you into that side of things?

0:06:52 > 0:06:55Yes, definitely. I love to be able to walk out into the back yard,

0:06:55 > 0:07:00just pick fresh herbs to cook with, but also I grow my own hops,

0:07:00 > 0:07:02so I brew my own gluten-free beer.

0:07:02 > 0:07:04Oh, OK!

0:07:04 > 0:07:06Is it good beer, is it nice?

0:07:06 > 0:07:08- It's drinkable.- Oh, OK!

0:07:08 > 0:07:11Don't sell it too much, there, Kate, will you?!

0:07:12 > 0:07:14Yes, it's lovely!

0:07:15 > 0:07:17I was thinking the wall actually looks quite nice -

0:07:17 > 0:07:19you've got the trailers coming down, that's quite cool.

0:07:19 > 0:07:22When we're putting up that fence there for safety,

0:07:22 > 0:07:23you don't want it to block out the light.

0:07:23 > 0:07:25- No.- What are you thinking?

0:07:25 > 0:07:27I don't know, I quite like the whole use of wood,

0:07:27 > 0:07:28so I think maybe that would be nice.

0:07:28 > 0:07:30Do you entertain much out in the garden?

0:07:30 > 0:07:33Yeah, we definitely do. We love having people over and cooking,

0:07:33 > 0:07:35both of us, and because we're doing the house up,

0:07:35 > 0:07:38it would be nice to have an outdoor space

0:07:38 > 0:07:41where we can have people come and hang out here.

0:07:41 > 0:07:44The team certainly have a challenge on their hands here.

0:07:44 > 0:07:49Kate and Will not only want a garden to provide produce for the family,

0:07:49 > 0:07:52they also want entertaining space,

0:07:52 > 0:07:55and they need that huge drop safely fenced,

0:07:55 > 0:07:57without blocking all the light from the lounge.

0:07:59 > 0:08:03The designers are going to have to be super savvy with that £2,500.

0:08:08 > 0:08:11So, Charlie and the Rich brothers waste no time

0:08:11 > 0:08:13and start brainstorming ideas.

0:08:13 > 0:08:15Each of them will come up with a design

0:08:15 > 0:08:18that matches Kate and Will's style and their budget.

0:08:20 > 0:08:23Their £2,500 will be used to cover the cost of the materials

0:08:23 > 0:08:25for their new garden,

0:08:25 > 0:08:29while the labour will be supplied by Charlie, the Rich brothers,

0:08:29 > 0:08:31and their team of landscapers.

0:08:31 > 0:08:34Once they've presented their designs,

0:08:34 > 0:08:36the couple will then choose a winner,

0:08:36 > 0:08:40and whoever loses will have to help the winner build the garden.

0:08:44 > 0:08:46It's time for the big pitch.

0:08:46 > 0:08:49- Here they come.- Oh, here we go!

0:08:49 > 0:08:53Charlie has seen that Will loves the idea of a working garden,

0:08:53 > 0:08:57one that supplies veg for the larder and beer for the fridge,

0:08:57 > 0:09:00while the boys have seen that Kate has a taste

0:09:00 > 0:09:02for modern Scandinavian design -

0:09:02 > 0:09:04but whichever direction they choose,

0:09:04 > 0:09:07they first have to deal with that drop.

0:09:07 > 0:09:10We wanted to create a really smart looking fence,

0:09:10 > 0:09:13- so, horizontal slatted, quite thin wood.- Yeah.

0:09:13 > 0:09:15So we were going to start staggering the gaps,

0:09:15 > 0:09:18so they get bigger as it goes up.

0:09:18 > 0:09:19Down the bottom, for the guys,

0:09:19 > 0:09:21they won't be able to crawl through anything,

0:09:21 > 0:09:23it's nice and safe, that's paramount.

0:09:23 > 0:09:25But as it gets to the top, the gaps open up,

0:09:25 > 0:09:28so you'd still be able to see out as well...

0:09:28 > 0:09:31- Yeah.- ..but it'll just keep that light coming through.

0:09:31 > 0:09:32To make this safe,

0:09:32 > 0:09:36I have run a very simple fence all the way round,

0:09:36 > 0:09:41which is tightened wires so they're close together lower down

0:09:41 > 0:09:44and then more spaced out,

0:09:44 > 0:09:47so it means it won't shade your windows.

0:09:47 > 0:09:50- Yep.- But it will also give you a great place during the summer

0:09:50 > 0:09:55to grow golden hops and some normal hops over it.

0:09:55 > 0:09:59Clearly influenced by the Scandi interior,

0:09:59 > 0:10:02the boys have gone for a slatted wooden boundary,

0:10:02 > 0:10:06but Charlie's wire fence will let more light into the house,

0:10:06 > 0:10:09and create additional growing space.

0:10:09 > 0:10:11Can the boys bounce back?

0:10:11 > 0:10:14- We wanted to give you some bespoke raised beds.- Yeah.

0:10:14 > 0:10:16We know you love growing your veg.

0:10:16 > 0:10:18We wanted to put that in a bit more of a designer,

0:10:18 > 0:10:21so not your ordinary ones, a bit more irregular shapes,

0:10:21 > 0:10:23but enough space for you to grow some veg.

0:10:23 > 0:10:25And then, also, we know you love your hops.

0:10:25 > 0:10:27- Yes, I do. - So, that was high importance.

0:10:27 > 0:10:30On this side here, what we've done is we've put some uprights,

0:10:30 > 0:10:32and then we've got some netting in between,

0:10:32 > 0:10:35and that's a framework so you can grow your hops...

0:10:35 > 0:10:37- Great.- ..and amongst your seating area, so, you know,

0:10:37 > 0:10:40you can be having a beer but keeping an eye on the hops

0:10:40 > 0:10:43- to make sure it's growing well. - Perfect, I like it!

0:10:43 > 0:10:46So we've got some raised beds here and here.

0:10:46 > 0:10:48Mainly herbs in this one.

0:10:48 > 0:10:51And because your garden is so nice and warm,

0:10:51 > 0:10:56I thought it'd be really good fun to have, in amongst the plants,

0:10:56 > 0:11:00some New Zealand plants, so maybe a pohutukawa...

0:11:00 > 0:11:02- Lovely.- ..or metrosideros

0:11:02 > 0:11:05and tea tree or manuka, leptospermum,

0:11:05 > 0:11:08- because that's a real sun trap there...- Yeah.

0:11:08 > 0:11:11..and that will give you a bit more glam to your patio area.

0:11:11 > 0:11:13Yep.

0:11:13 > 0:11:17Well, the boys are definitely ticking all the right boxes,

0:11:17 > 0:11:20but Charlie's beautiful New Zealand plant selection

0:11:20 > 0:11:23was a real tug at Will's heartstrings.

0:11:23 > 0:11:26The couple want their kids to enjoy the garden, too,

0:11:26 > 0:11:28and both designers have come up with a solution.

0:11:28 > 0:11:30We had a little look in the house,

0:11:30 > 0:11:32and it almost has like a Scandinavian feel,

0:11:32 > 0:11:35with the kind of furniture and the nice, wooden floor.

0:11:35 > 0:11:37So that's something we wanted to pull out and put in the garden.

0:11:37 > 0:11:41So we have a large deck which is going to create the feature

0:11:41 > 0:11:43within the garden. It's very usable.

0:11:43 > 0:11:46It's very warm. It's got a lovely little bespoke bench, here.

0:11:46 > 0:11:49We've gone and put a lovely little tree inside the middle of the deck.

0:11:49 > 0:11:53We thought, it's quite nice to bring the garden in.

0:11:53 > 0:11:55It'll be really clean, quite crisp, in a way,

0:11:55 > 0:11:58coming out of the deck, so that'll be really cool.

0:11:59 > 0:12:02The boys have really nailed the Scandinavian vibe

0:12:02 > 0:12:05with their modern decking, complete with a feature tree.

0:12:07 > 0:12:09Will Charlie be able to match it?

0:12:09 > 0:12:14We've got your patio, barbecue area here

0:12:14 > 0:12:18and then this area is a raised bed with a pond in it.

0:12:18 > 0:12:23The bed is high enough that the children can get their hands in it

0:12:23 > 0:12:26but they won't be able to fall into it.

0:12:26 > 0:12:29We are going to put a little solar powered pump in here,

0:12:29 > 0:12:31so the panels pop up on there

0:12:31 > 0:12:34- and then we can grow watercress in there.- Yeah.

0:12:34 > 0:12:38A patio and an eco-friendly solar-powered water feature.

0:12:38 > 0:12:41Has this tipped the scales in Charlie's favour?

0:12:42 > 0:12:44Right, thank you.

0:12:47 > 0:12:49With the pitches over,

0:12:49 > 0:12:52Will and Kate have a tough decision on their hands -

0:12:52 > 0:12:54and they can only pick one design.

0:12:54 > 0:12:58It's... I love the fact that we've got the solar panels

0:12:58 > 0:13:02- on the roof of the shed. That's really sympathetic, isn't it?- Yeah.

0:13:02 > 0:13:05So they loved the water feature, solar powered,

0:13:05 > 0:13:07running water through a pool with watercress.

0:13:07 > 0:13:09- You always have water, don't you? - Water.

0:13:09 > 0:13:12- The wildlife theme.- We haven't put water in ours, have we?

0:13:12 > 0:13:14- No. - Where did you get that idea from?

0:13:14 > 0:13:17Well, you've got to have water there for the wildlife.

0:13:17 > 0:13:19The trees, it does sort of break up,

0:13:19 > 0:13:22it screens the garden a little bit, as well,

0:13:22 > 0:13:24and just breaks up the garden,

0:13:24 > 0:13:27gives it a little bit more height, a bit more interest, I think.

0:13:27 > 0:13:32I like how the Rich brothers have used the more sympathetic,

0:13:32 > 0:13:34- softer materials.- Yeah.

0:13:34 > 0:13:36I have to say, it's difficult.

0:13:36 > 0:13:38You think, "They'll like that, like that, like that,"

0:13:38 > 0:13:41but now that I've spoken to you, I'm like, "Hmm..."

0:13:41 > 0:13:42Well, you just never know, do you?

0:13:42 > 0:13:45So what I do like about Charlie's design

0:13:45 > 0:13:49is it brings some native New Zealand plants into the mix.

0:13:49 > 0:13:52- Yeah, definitely.- It'll be nice to see some pohutukawa in there.

0:13:52 > 0:13:56Yeah, it's a spectacular flower during summer, isn't it?

0:13:56 > 0:13:57Yeah, definitely.

0:14:01 > 0:14:04Will they be won over by the boys' simple lines,

0:14:04 > 0:14:09bespoke planters and use of natural wood throughout...

0:14:09 > 0:14:10or will Charlie's clever fence,

0:14:10 > 0:14:13New Zealand plants and eco-water feature swing the vote?

0:14:15 > 0:14:16They can only pick one.

0:14:17 > 0:14:19So...who's it going to be?

0:14:21 > 0:14:23- Hello.- Hello.

0:14:23 > 0:14:26Well, thank you very much for all the effort you put in

0:14:26 > 0:14:30to listening to the brief with both of your designs -

0:14:30 > 0:14:32but the one we've decided to go with is...

0:14:35 > 0:14:37Yeah!

0:14:37 > 0:14:39What a decision.

0:14:39 > 0:14:42What is it that, you know, swayed you?

0:14:42 > 0:14:44I think, with this one,

0:14:44 > 0:14:48there's more space in and the back here, I think.

0:14:48 > 0:14:52And I liked how the trees gave different proportion, as well,

0:14:52 > 0:14:55and broke up the space, too, and the established trees, also.

0:14:57 > 0:14:59It looked like Charlie had nailed it -

0:14:59 > 0:15:02but, against the odds, the boys have prevailed...

0:15:04 > 0:15:08..but they have promised the couple a lot for their £2,500

0:15:08 > 0:15:09and this is the trickiest plot

0:15:09 > 0:15:12the Garden Rescue team have ever tackled.

0:15:13 > 0:15:16It's going to take all our gardeners' talents to pull it off.

0:15:24 > 0:15:27It's day one of the build in Whitchurch,

0:15:27 > 0:15:30and while the Rich brothers are away working at the finer details

0:15:30 > 0:15:32of their eco-friendly design...

0:15:34 > 0:15:36Paul and his crack team of landscapers...

0:15:38 > 0:15:39..make a start on the garden.

0:15:41 > 0:15:43A lot of the garden needs to be cleared

0:15:43 > 0:15:44to make space for the new features...

0:15:46 > 0:15:49..and that means it's curtains for Will and Kate's old shed.

0:15:49 > 0:15:52First thing, all of us round that side...

0:15:52 > 0:15:55Flat pack it, straight down the bank, done.

0:16:11 > 0:16:15But another feature in the garden needs more careful handling.

0:16:15 > 0:16:16She's not happy!

0:16:16 > 0:16:19- She's going. - HE CHUCKLES

0:16:21 > 0:16:22Go on, go on, then.

0:16:26 > 0:16:28There you go, chooks, there you are, safe and sound.

0:16:34 > 0:16:35Chicken run cleaned...

0:16:35 > 0:16:37There's some eggs, there.

0:16:37 > 0:16:39..and it looks like the hens have been laying.

0:16:39 > 0:16:40Great.

0:16:40 > 0:16:43Wait, wait, wait... I've got my gloves on. Wait, wait, wait.

0:16:43 > 0:16:45That's how to make an omelette.

0:16:51 > 0:16:53Fun and games over,

0:16:53 > 0:16:55the team need to crack on

0:16:55 > 0:16:58and make a start on creating the family living area.

0:17:00 > 0:17:03The Rich brothers are planning to sink the deck into the ground,

0:17:03 > 0:17:07minimising the need for steps and creating a neat, clean look.

0:17:09 > 0:17:11HE GROANS

0:17:14 > 0:17:16Yeah, that's good.

0:17:16 > 0:17:20Central to the Rich brothers' design are four large feature trees,

0:17:20 > 0:17:23one of which is integrated into the decking area,

0:17:23 > 0:17:26and that means it needs to be planted first.

0:17:26 > 0:17:30Right, we've got this tree, a nice betula behind me,

0:17:30 > 0:17:32that's got to go in the deck

0:17:32 > 0:17:37and what you need to do is put it in before you get all the framework in,

0:17:37 > 0:17:40because once the framework's in, that's it.

0:17:40 > 0:17:42The deck boards go down and it's game over.

0:17:55 > 0:17:57The garden's progressing well,

0:17:57 > 0:18:01and it's not long before Charlie and the Rich brothers arrive -

0:18:01 > 0:18:05and David has the perfect job for Charlie's creative talents.

0:18:05 > 0:18:09This is a small garden, a low budget, but there's a lot going on.

0:18:09 > 0:18:12- There is. - We've got plenty to do today.

0:18:12 > 0:18:14- Lots of wood.- Oh, OK. All right.

0:18:14 > 0:18:16- Are you ready?- I think so.

0:18:16 > 0:18:19The chickens. That's the bit that wasn't really in our design.

0:18:19 > 0:18:22We knew it wanted to be there but there's no design to it.

0:18:22 > 0:18:25- So, absolute free rein. - Oh, I can go mad.

0:18:25 > 0:18:27- Paint it red if you want. - But there's no budget.

0:18:27 > 0:18:30Me and Harry, we're on things like the bench,

0:18:30 > 0:18:33a nice bespoke bench with logs underneath it.

0:18:33 > 0:18:36Containers for the raised beds, with the veg growing in it,

0:18:36 > 0:18:37then obviously planting.

0:18:37 > 0:18:39So you think, "Oh, it's a small garden,

0:18:39 > 0:18:40"it'll be really quick and easy."

0:18:40 > 0:18:44- We'll be like this.- Get out my way, you're in my chicken run!

0:18:44 > 0:18:46Chicken run!

0:18:46 > 0:18:49Right, on that bombshell, let's crack on.

0:18:49 > 0:18:51Oh, dear. Don't give up the day job, eh?

0:18:56 > 0:18:59Making the garden safe for their two young children

0:18:59 > 0:19:01was Will and Kate's number one concern.

0:19:01 > 0:19:03The first task for the boys

0:19:03 > 0:19:05is getting the fence posts in the ground...

0:19:13 > 0:19:17..while Charlie is making room for her new chicken run,

0:19:17 > 0:19:19which means the compost bin needs a new home.

0:19:21 > 0:19:25I'm repositioning Kate and Will's compost bin.

0:19:26 > 0:19:29They had it tucked right under the hedge.

0:19:29 > 0:19:31You can see why, because they are not a thing of beauty.

0:19:31 > 0:19:33But, by having it in a shady place,

0:19:33 > 0:19:37it means that the compost doesn't actually rot down so quickly.

0:19:37 > 0:19:42So this is away from the patio area, so there won't be the smell,

0:19:42 > 0:19:44but also the sun rises over there,

0:19:44 > 0:19:46so it'll get nice and warm,

0:19:46 > 0:19:50so it'll make everything rot down much more quickly.

0:19:52 > 0:19:56Will and Kate are keen to grow their own fruit and veg in the new garden,

0:19:56 > 0:19:58so a good source of compost will be vital.

0:19:59 > 0:20:01When it comes to be a vegetable plot,

0:20:01 > 0:20:03spreading compost on your garden

0:20:03 > 0:20:06is a great way to add nutrients to the soil,

0:20:06 > 0:20:08retain moisture and suppress weeds...

0:20:12 > 0:20:16..and if you have enough compost or mulch available,

0:20:16 > 0:20:18you can actually have an amazing garden

0:20:18 > 0:20:20without ever having to pick up a spade again.

0:20:23 > 0:20:25No Dig gardening is a technique

0:20:25 > 0:20:28that Charles Dowding has been practising in the UK

0:20:28 > 0:20:29for over 35 years...

0:20:30 > 0:20:32..and he is passionate about soil.

0:20:34 > 0:20:38I just love working with soil and with plants.

0:20:38 > 0:20:40They're bursting with life.

0:20:40 > 0:20:42It's nature's way.

0:20:42 > 0:20:46No Dig is about disturbing the soil as little as possible.

0:20:46 > 0:20:51So, it's to encourage soil life,

0:20:51 > 0:20:56all the organisms in soil to stay intact...

0:20:56 > 0:21:01but also feeding them with a mulch of organic matter on the surface.

0:21:01 > 0:21:05Compost is the best surface organic mulch you can use.

0:21:07 > 0:21:11To make great compost, you want a mixture of green and brown,

0:21:11 > 0:21:15roughly half of the brown, which is dry old woody stuff.

0:21:15 > 0:21:19That provides carbon and a structure for a heap to add to the green,

0:21:19 > 0:21:23which is leafy, lush, nitrogen materials and those two together,

0:21:23 > 0:21:2750-50 of each, you will get great compost.

0:21:27 > 0:21:30No Dig bed. Let's see what we've got.

0:21:31 > 0:21:33There's some very nice carrots there...

0:21:33 > 0:21:35and they come out clean, too.

0:21:35 > 0:21:39That's the big advantage of growing in the compost - cleaner roots.

0:21:39 > 0:21:43When you've got really strong life in the soil,

0:21:43 > 0:21:48that helps to keep it open and full of channels for roots

0:21:48 > 0:21:52and also full of food for plants.

0:21:52 > 0:21:58This bed, every autumn, winter, I dig it, incorporate compost.

0:21:58 > 0:22:00This is the traditional digging approach.

0:22:02 > 0:22:04This bed,

0:22:04 > 0:22:05No Dig,

0:22:05 > 0:22:09I'm simply putting the same amount of compost on top.

0:22:09 > 0:22:15This year, so far, the dug bed has given 68 kilos of vegetables.

0:22:16 > 0:22:21The No Dig bed has given 74 kilos of vegetables -

0:22:21 > 0:22:23and more to come.

0:22:24 > 0:22:26Starting with No Dig can be tricky.

0:22:26 > 0:22:29One thing you don't need to do is dig -

0:22:29 > 0:22:31but you do need to mulch thoroughly.

0:22:31 > 0:22:33It's about killing the weeds that are there

0:22:33 > 0:22:37so that you've then got clean soil ongoing.

0:22:37 > 0:22:40Once you've got through that first year, you're laughing, actually,

0:22:40 > 0:22:42and ongoing you have a lot less weeding to do.

0:22:42 > 0:22:43You save a lot of time.

0:22:45 > 0:22:47The No Dig method that Charles is using

0:22:47 > 0:22:51is one of the most eco-friendly styles of gardening you can adopt.

0:22:51 > 0:22:55All you need is a plentiful supply of mulch.

0:23:00 > 0:23:02Back in Whitchurch,

0:23:02 > 0:23:05Will and Kate's Good Life garden is starting to take shape...

0:23:09 > 0:23:11..and while the boys wait for the concrete to set

0:23:11 > 0:23:13around their fence posts,

0:23:13 > 0:23:15Harry decides to finish off the decking.

0:23:16 > 0:23:19The Rich brothers are using sustainably harvested British pine

0:23:19 > 0:23:23for the deck, which is not only better for the environment,

0:23:23 > 0:23:25it's a lot cheaper than imported hardwood alternatives.

0:23:30 > 0:23:33And, as you can see, it's quite a large, open space.

0:23:33 > 0:23:36Especially with decking, it's lovely to have a point of reference,

0:23:36 > 0:23:37or a lovely feature within it.

0:23:37 > 0:23:39So we've chosen to put this birch tree,

0:23:39 > 0:23:40and that'll link with the other birch trees

0:23:40 > 0:23:42in the rest of the garden,

0:23:42 > 0:23:43so it's going to be a lovely feature -

0:23:43 > 0:23:45and with a bit of underplanting

0:23:45 > 0:23:48it's going to connect this whole space together.

0:23:56 > 0:24:00Meanwhile, Charlie is powering on with the chicken run.

0:24:02 > 0:24:05So the chicken wire's really just to keep the chickens in this area

0:24:05 > 0:24:08so they don't plummet off the edge of the wall, there.

0:24:08 > 0:24:10When you're keeping chickens, you need to protect them -

0:24:10 > 0:24:13so, you need to keep them in, but also keep things out.

0:24:13 > 0:24:16You don't want predators getting them, like foxes.

0:24:16 > 0:24:17Make sure you've got a good hutch -

0:24:17 > 0:24:19which Kate and Will have already got,

0:24:19 > 0:24:21so that we'll move that in here

0:24:21 > 0:24:24and at night-time you need to put the chickens in

0:24:24 > 0:24:27and lock them away safe, because, also, with your hutch,

0:24:27 > 0:24:30you want to make sure they've got a raised-up area

0:24:30 > 0:24:32to stop rats from getting in, as well.

0:24:34 > 0:24:35Oh!

0:24:35 > 0:24:37- Nearly hit his head, then.- Deadly!

0:24:41 > 0:24:42With the concrete set,

0:24:42 > 0:24:46the boys are ready to start putting the slats on their bespoke fence.

0:24:46 > 0:24:49Their plan is to increase the gaps between the slats

0:24:49 > 0:24:51as the fence gets higher.

0:24:51 > 0:24:54This way, they can minimise the amount of light the fence will block

0:24:54 > 0:24:59from the lounge window below while still making the garden super-safe

0:24:59 > 0:25:01for Will and Kate's two young boys.

0:25:01 > 0:25:03That looks...

0:25:03 > 0:25:06That looks nice, but I can't really see it.

0:25:06 > 0:25:08With a customised fence like this,

0:25:08 > 0:25:12the only way to know what's going to work is to hold a few of the slats

0:25:12 > 0:25:14up and have a look.

0:25:14 > 0:25:17Yeah, it'd be nice to get a couple more. Shall we grab Charlie?

0:25:17 > 0:25:20- Yeah, go on, then.- Charlie? - Aye?- Can we grab you?

0:25:20 > 0:25:26Right, if we could put these two together just to give David an idea.

0:25:26 > 0:25:27Oh, right. OK.

0:25:27 > 0:25:30I'll go this side. I'll be the gent and go down the dangerous side.

0:25:30 > 0:25:32A bit higher, Harry, on the top one.

0:25:32 > 0:25:35- That looks quite nice. - And the bottom one?

0:25:35 > 0:25:36- Does that look about right?- Yeah.

0:25:36 > 0:25:38I think - at that, you can still see a lot.

0:25:38 > 0:25:41- It doesn't block out anything. Which is great.- Thank you, Charlie.

0:25:41 > 0:25:44- Good-oh.- Lovely jubbly.

0:25:44 > 0:25:47Spacing worked out, the boys can crack on...

0:25:48 > 0:25:50..and with such a big drop below,

0:25:50 > 0:25:53it's not just children's safety David is concerned about.

0:25:54 > 0:25:57We are using laths that are 2 x 1 inch and that's for two reasons.

0:25:57 > 0:26:00We want it to be structurally sound when we're attaching it.

0:26:00 > 0:26:03The thinner you go the more risk you have of splitting the laths,

0:26:03 > 0:26:06so we don't want that. And then also because it's of high importance

0:26:06 > 0:26:08for this to be really safe, there's a big drop,

0:26:08 > 0:26:11we need it to be really strong so if someone was to fall into it,

0:26:11 > 0:26:13between the uprights, we need to make sure

0:26:13 > 0:26:15that these laths are going to hold their weight.

0:26:20 > 0:26:21Nice.

0:26:21 > 0:26:24All we've got to do now is cut the tops of the post off.

0:26:24 > 0:26:26It's a lovely, clean, simple design

0:26:26 > 0:26:28that's going to let loads of light through.

0:26:28 > 0:26:30I quite like it.

0:26:34 > 0:26:38Meanwhile, Charlie's looking at ways to greenify the new chicken run.

0:26:38 > 0:26:41Chickens were originally forest animals,

0:26:41 > 0:26:43and they are much happier with a few shrubs around...

0:26:45 > 0:26:47..but some plants are poisonous to them,

0:26:47 > 0:26:50and, as chickens will peck and scratch at everything,

0:26:50 > 0:26:53the plants need to be hardy, as well.

0:26:53 > 0:26:55So, this one that I'm using

0:26:55 > 0:26:57which will put up with the chickens pecking round at the bottom,

0:26:57 > 0:27:01is guelder-rose, native to the UK, Europe and most of Asia.

0:27:01 > 0:27:04It has good autumn colour, it goes a nice yellow colour,

0:27:04 > 0:27:07gets fruit on it, as well, in the autumn,

0:27:07 > 0:27:09which bullfinches and mistle thrush love,

0:27:09 > 0:27:12and then, in the sort of early summer,

0:27:12 > 0:27:15it has big, white heads of flowers,

0:27:15 > 0:27:18so it's very attractive and really robust.

0:27:24 > 0:27:26And with their new home nearly complete,

0:27:26 > 0:27:28it's time to move in the chooks.

0:27:30 > 0:27:34OK, you boys - and I mean more than you two -

0:27:34 > 0:27:37so, you're going to be the chicken wranglers.

0:27:37 > 0:27:38- The chicken wranglers.- Bring it on.

0:27:38 > 0:27:40So, you've got to hold on to them,

0:27:40 > 0:27:42because I'm not chasing them up the street!

0:27:42 > 0:27:44All right?

0:27:44 > 0:27:47- Which one have I got? - You've got the red one.

0:27:47 > 0:27:49Oh, you've got the one with the big claws.

0:27:49 > 0:27:52- That was very smoothly done, actually.- You're well-behaved.

0:27:52 > 0:27:55- Hey, chicken.- You've got one that's a bit more radical.

0:27:55 > 0:27:57Oh, don't you rustle, mate.

0:27:57 > 0:27:59Take your time. Because I've got a wild animal in my grasp!

0:27:59 > 0:28:02We'll take a seat, Charlie, with our new pets.

0:28:02 > 0:28:04So this is really wobbly.

0:28:04 > 0:28:07I feel like we're bonding.

0:28:07 > 0:28:09Up!

0:28:09 > 0:28:14Up, up, higher, higher, higher and then down, down, down, down.

0:28:15 > 0:28:16Right.

0:28:16 > 0:28:19It's always stressful moving home, anyway.

0:28:19 > 0:28:21So, it's relocate chooks.

0:28:21 > 0:28:22Chuck 'em in.

0:28:22 > 0:28:24Oh, chook 'em in!

0:28:24 > 0:28:28- Chuck, chuck, chuck... - Don't chuck 'em in, gently place.

0:28:28 > 0:28:30Number one.

0:28:30 > 0:28:32Reunite. Oh, go on you little...

0:28:32 > 0:28:34Oh, chill out.

0:28:34 > 0:28:36It means I can then plant up round here.

0:28:39 > 0:28:42With the chooks rehoused, Harry carries on with the fence...

0:28:44 > 0:28:47..while David makes a start on the raised planters.

0:28:48 > 0:28:50An area for growing fruit and veg

0:28:50 > 0:28:53was high on the family's shopping list -

0:28:53 > 0:28:55and on the boys' design,

0:28:55 > 0:28:57the new planters are built from timber decking

0:28:57 > 0:28:59so they link with the other features in the garden.

0:29:02 > 0:29:05We've built this raised bed two planks high, and that's fine,

0:29:05 > 0:29:07because we're going to dig the soil underneath

0:29:07 > 0:29:09so it's got a lot more ground to grow into.

0:29:09 > 0:29:12With this one we felt that one would be a bit of a trip hazard,

0:29:12 > 0:29:15two is perfect, especially because Will and Kate

0:29:15 > 0:29:17want to grow some veg with their kids.

0:29:27 > 0:29:30Meanwhile, Charlie completes the final section of planting

0:29:30 > 0:29:31in the chicken run...

0:29:31 > 0:29:35And then the last things to go in, just over here,

0:29:35 > 0:29:37is going to be the thyme and the lavender

0:29:37 > 0:29:39saved from the border over there

0:29:39 > 0:29:44and that will help stop a lot of the flies that tend to congregate

0:29:44 > 0:29:46around chicken runs.

0:29:53 > 0:29:57Raised planters complete, all David has to do is position them -

0:29:57 > 0:30:01but with three designers on hand, it's easier said than done.

0:30:02 > 0:30:05I like it. It's nice having three to work with. They're quite small.

0:30:05 > 0:30:08- Yeah.- We'll play around with them. - Yeah, that's gorgeous.

0:30:08 > 0:30:11- It's really, really nice.- And having it at different angles, as well.

0:30:11 > 0:30:15- Don't you make my chicken run look messy!- Yeah!

0:30:16 > 0:30:18- What do we think?- Where do you reckon this one, Harry?

0:30:18 > 0:30:19That looks like a tug boat.

0:30:19 > 0:30:21It does look a little bit like a boat. Beep-beep.

0:30:21 > 0:30:23Point this way a bit.

0:30:25 > 0:30:26A bit more.

0:30:26 > 0:30:28Yeah. Maybe pull it forward a bit.

0:30:28 > 0:30:29That's good, that's good. Whoa!

0:30:31 > 0:30:33- Perfect.- Nice.

0:30:33 > 0:30:34Yeah.

0:30:37 > 0:30:39Right, I'm going to leave you to get on.

0:30:39 > 0:30:42- All right, cool.- It's your baby, isn't it?- Too right!

0:30:43 > 0:30:46As the ground needs to be prepped first,

0:30:46 > 0:30:49David sprays around the planters so he knows where to put them back...

0:30:51 > 0:30:54..but the team's carpentry talents are needed again.

0:30:54 > 0:30:58The boys want to add a bespoke bench at the top end of the decking area.

0:31:00 > 0:31:02We've decided to go with scaffolding board to top the bench -

0:31:02 > 0:31:04and these aren't very cheap.

0:31:04 > 0:31:07They're about £15, £16 per scaffolding board -

0:31:07 > 0:31:10but what they are, is they're very durable and very tough,

0:31:10 > 0:31:13and it's going to make a great finish to the top of this bench.

0:31:18 > 0:31:21With the bench top on, Harry just needs to sand it down.

0:31:23 > 0:31:26The sanding will not only make the timber smoother

0:31:26 > 0:31:28and more comfortable to sit on,

0:31:28 > 0:31:31it will also stop anyone from getting a nasty splinter.

0:31:37 > 0:31:39When it came to choosing a design,

0:31:39 > 0:31:42one of the deciders for Will was the idea of a hops wall

0:31:42 > 0:31:44on the side of the decking...

0:31:45 > 0:31:48..and the spare chicken wire is ideal for the job.

0:31:51 > 0:31:54This is a really simple structure for climbers.

0:31:54 > 0:31:55You could grow anything up here.

0:31:55 > 0:32:00If you're short on space, it's a great way to create a screen.

0:32:00 > 0:32:02We're going to grow the hops up here,

0:32:02 > 0:32:04because Will's really into his beer-making

0:32:04 > 0:32:06and growing his own hops.

0:32:16 > 0:32:18- Won't get that back out, will they? - Perfect.

0:32:18 > 0:32:22Charlie is keen to recycle Will's existing plant.

0:32:24 > 0:32:26This is Will's hops.

0:32:26 > 0:32:28He was growing it in a container,

0:32:28 > 0:32:30which - it'll do OK, but it'll be much happier,

0:32:30 > 0:32:33much easier to look after in the ground.

0:32:33 > 0:32:36It will look after itself and he won't have to feed it.

0:32:36 > 0:32:39The great thing about hops is they're self-twining,

0:32:39 > 0:32:42so they'll just scrabble up the post.

0:32:42 > 0:32:45If you buy hops at a garden centre, if it's not in a pot,

0:32:45 > 0:32:49it could just be a bare root and it looks like a little wizened twig.

0:32:49 > 0:32:51Don't worry, it grows like mad.

0:32:51 > 0:32:53It does really well.

0:32:53 > 0:32:56So this hops is well-established.

0:32:56 > 0:33:01You can get a kilo of hops off of an established plant

0:33:01 > 0:33:06which can make up to 400 pints of beer.

0:33:06 > 0:33:10So, that should keep Will very busy.

0:33:11 > 0:33:15But as well as keeping this family lubricated and well fed,

0:33:15 > 0:33:18the boys also want the garden to look stunning -

0:33:18 > 0:33:19and now the landscaping is in,

0:33:19 > 0:33:22it's time to place the feature trees.

0:33:23 > 0:33:24Four large silver birch trees

0:33:24 > 0:33:27not only provide instant height and structure,

0:33:27 > 0:33:30they also perfectly complement the brothers' design scheme.

0:33:32 > 0:33:35- Lovely, right. - See what that looks like.

0:33:40 > 0:33:42Lovely.

0:33:42 > 0:33:44Gorgeous tree.

0:33:44 > 0:33:46- Nice and feathered, isn't it?- Yeah.

0:33:46 > 0:33:48Yeah, really nice and natural.

0:33:48 > 0:33:51It'll be nice because it'll give a little bit of dappled shade,

0:33:51 > 0:33:53but not actually dominate the space too much.

0:33:54 > 0:33:56When looking round Will and Kate's home,

0:33:56 > 0:33:59it became apparent they're into that Scandi design

0:33:59 > 0:34:00and I think a birch suits that perfectly.

0:34:00 > 0:34:03Native to Britain, they're also native to Scandinavia.

0:34:03 > 0:34:05They've got some gorgeous natural qualities.

0:34:05 > 0:34:08They've got a rustic bark, and this one hasn't been manicured at all.

0:34:08 > 0:34:10It's nice and feathered. It's got all its branches on,

0:34:10 > 0:34:13and it will give a lovely, dappled shade over the deck.

0:34:18 > 0:34:20Now it's just the planting to go.

0:34:32 > 0:34:34This is Molinia transparent.

0:34:34 > 0:34:35It's a beautiful grass,

0:34:35 > 0:34:38and we're using it in this garden for a few reasons.

0:34:38 > 0:34:40One is, it holds its form late into the year,

0:34:40 > 0:34:43so it's gorgeous for an autumn-feeling garden.

0:34:43 > 0:34:47It has this lovely bronze colour, and planting it close to the deck,

0:34:47 > 0:34:50you walk past it, you touch it, it's just a brilliant tactile plant.

0:34:53 > 0:34:55And the Rich brothers haven't forgotten

0:34:55 > 0:34:58about Will's New Zealand heritage, either.

0:35:00 > 0:35:04When you think of New Zealand, you think of ferns.

0:35:04 > 0:35:06Lush, green countryside.

0:35:07 > 0:35:10Ferns normally like a nice, moist situation

0:35:10 > 0:35:13but lady fern is quite forgiving.

0:35:13 > 0:35:17If you get it established it'll put up with slightly drier conditions...

0:35:18 > 0:35:21..and dependent on where you are in the UK,

0:35:21 > 0:35:25they'll be evergreen, or semi evergreen.

0:35:25 > 0:35:27These ones down here, because we're down south,

0:35:27 > 0:35:30will probably be semi evergreen through the winter.

0:35:35 > 0:35:37Keeping with the Scandinavian theme,

0:35:37 > 0:35:39we wanted to keep the planting very naturalistic,

0:35:39 > 0:35:42so we've got a mix of structural grasses,

0:35:42 > 0:35:44soft perennials and also fruit bushes,

0:35:44 > 0:35:47so there's a sense of it kind of taking over

0:35:47 > 0:35:49and filling out this deck space.

0:35:49 > 0:35:51It's this mix that will really give them the sense

0:35:51 > 0:35:53of being in their own little wilderness.

0:35:56 > 0:35:59One of will and Kate's main priorities for this garden

0:35:59 > 0:36:01was having somewhere to grow herbs and vegetables...

0:36:03 > 0:36:07..so Charlie and David are planting up the new raised beds,

0:36:07 > 0:36:10and within a few months there will be a bounty of produce.

0:36:11 > 0:36:15Raised beds like this are great for growing vegetables in -

0:36:15 > 0:36:19and you can actually get a lot off quite a small space.

0:36:19 > 0:36:22We've mixed in some herbs with the vegetables.

0:36:22 > 0:36:26Basically, herbs flower so they attract lots of beneficial insects

0:36:26 > 0:36:29like hover flies, which will eat the pests

0:36:29 > 0:36:33that you might get on your vegetables.

0:36:33 > 0:36:37I'm planting some broad beans here.

0:36:37 > 0:36:40Two at a time, so that if one doesn't germinate properly,

0:36:40 > 0:36:42the other one will.

0:36:46 > 0:36:50To really complete the Scandinavian woodland vibe of the decking area,

0:36:50 > 0:36:53the boys have designed their seating bench to double as a log store.

0:36:57 > 0:36:59This garden is nearly complete.

0:36:59 > 0:37:02All that remains is to dust down the couple's log burner

0:37:02 > 0:37:05for a final Scandinavian touch to the deck.

0:37:13 > 0:37:15Before the Garden Rescue team arrived,

0:37:15 > 0:37:18Will and Kate's garden was a cluttered mess.

0:37:18 > 0:37:22With an old shed, unsightly chicken coop

0:37:22 > 0:37:24and a failed veg patch -

0:37:24 > 0:37:28but, most importantly, the unfenced wall was a potential deathtrap

0:37:28 > 0:37:30for their two young boys.

0:37:30 > 0:37:33It was a space that neither parents or children could enjoy.

0:37:36 > 0:37:39Now it's had a £2,500 makeover

0:37:40 > 0:37:43and the Rich brothers have been very clever with the cash

0:37:43 > 0:37:46and transformed the entire garden.

0:37:46 > 0:37:51They spent £260 to create a bespoke fence that made the garden safe

0:37:51 > 0:37:55while also minimising light loss to the lounge below...

0:38:00 > 0:38:02..and the three raised planters,

0:38:02 > 0:38:04which will provide the family with a bounty

0:38:04 > 0:38:05of fresh herbs and vegetables,

0:38:05 > 0:38:08were constructed for just £20 each.

0:38:09 > 0:38:11The low sides of these beds

0:38:11 > 0:38:15are also perfect for encouraging budding young gardeners.

0:38:16 > 0:38:20Bringing some of the country good life to their suburban plot

0:38:20 > 0:38:21was a high priority -

0:38:21 > 0:38:24and, for just £150,

0:38:24 > 0:38:28the boys have given the chickens a large, new run

0:38:28 > 0:38:32which should see them laying happily for many years to come.

0:38:32 > 0:38:34The plant selection was paramount

0:38:34 > 0:38:37to creating a naturalistic vibe in this garden,

0:38:37 > 0:38:42and, to give the space a mix of fruits, ferns and wild flowers,

0:38:42 > 0:38:45the brothers spent a total of £900...

0:38:46 > 0:38:50..including the four large silver birch trees,

0:38:50 > 0:38:53which create an instant woodland effect

0:38:53 > 0:38:55and cost just £60 each...

0:38:57 > 0:39:01..and, finally, the large deck area,

0:39:01 > 0:39:03made out of sustainable British timber,

0:39:03 > 0:39:07that gives the garden that all-important Scandinavian vibe,

0:39:07 > 0:39:09was constructed for £1,100...

0:39:11 > 0:39:13..complete with a seating bench and a log store.

0:39:16 > 0:39:19Will and Kate wanted an eco-friendly family garden

0:39:19 > 0:39:23that would provide produce for their kitchen

0:39:23 > 0:39:25and still have room for entertaining -

0:39:25 > 0:39:29but, most importantly, it needed to be safe for their two young boys.

0:39:29 > 0:39:34It's time to find out if the Rich brothers were up to the task.

0:39:34 > 0:39:35Stay there, guys.

0:39:35 > 0:39:38I'm going to come round here, as well.

0:39:41 > 0:39:44OK, open your eyes and have a look at your garden.

0:39:44 > 0:39:46- Wow!- Wow!

0:39:46 > 0:39:49- Oh, my God!- It's awesome!

0:39:49 > 0:39:51That's a good reaction!

0:39:51 > 0:39:53It's great. Look at the deck, Kate.

0:39:53 > 0:39:55That's a beautiful deck.

0:39:55 > 0:39:57I'm loving that seat down the back, as well.

0:39:57 > 0:40:00- Yeah?- That is perfect.

0:40:00 > 0:40:02- Really good.- Wow.- Do you think it has a slight Scandinavian...?

0:40:02 > 0:40:06Definitely, yeah. With - it's birch trees, isn't it?

0:40:06 > 0:40:07- Yes, yeah.- Amazing.

0:40:07 > 0:40:09We've got your fire going, as well.

0:40:09 > 0:40:12Very snuggly with that fire going up on the deck.

0:40:12 > 0:40:14- Brilliant.- That's amazing. - Look at the chickens!

0:40:14 > 0:40:17Yeah, wow, look at that. A home away from home for the chickens!

0:40:17 > 0:40:19WILL CHUCKLES

0:40:19 > 0:40:22- Look at this.- There's a few things planted in here.- Hi, ladies.

0:40:22 > 0:40:24Yeah, this is amazing.

0:40:24 > 0:40:25The fence is perfect.

0:40:25 > 0:40:28- Yeah, of course, the fence, as well. - Absolutely perfect.

0:40:28 > 0:40:31Robust enough if the kids are going to bounce off it,

0:40:31 > 0:40:34but you can still see everything. Yeah, it's brilliant.

0:40:34 > 0:40:37- Really, really good.- Shall we show you some more?- Yes, please.

0:40:37 > 0:40:40And then here we've got the little vegetable beds, as well.

0:40:40 > 0:40:43Some herbs and some broad beans in there, as well.

0:40:43 > 0:40:46- KATE:- OK, fantastic. - Loads of produce, loads of things.

0:40:46 > 0:40:48And the... That looks brilliant.

0:40:48 > 0:40:50- Yeah, that is the hops frame.- Cool.

0:40:50 > 0:40:52So the hops will climb up the beam and across,

0:40:52 > 0:40:54and then you'll have a lovely, green wall.

0:40:54 > 0:40:57- Amazing. - Yeah. That's lovely, isn't it?

0:40:57 > 0:40:59I'm just imagining the smell of hops in autumn.

0:40:59 > 0:41:04- So relaxed out here, you'll be like, "Whoo...!"- Yeah, exactly.

0:41:04 > 0:41:08It's all mixed in with the planting, so it has that lovely, wild theme.

0:41:08 > 0:41:10Yeah.

0:41:11 > 0:41:13Are we all taking a seat. Look at that.

0:41:13 > 0:41:16- Wow.- It looks lovely. - How do you feel?- Good.

0:41:16 > 0:41:18There's only one thing wrong with this picture -

0:41:18 > 0:41:19an empty hand!

0:41:22 > 0:41:25Yeah, it's great to have your vision of what this could become.

0:41:25 > 0:41:27Is it like the visual? Is it...?

0:41:27 > 0:41:29100%, yes.

0:41:29 > 0:41:31- Definitely.- Oh, better!

0:41:31 > 0:41:33Oh, there we are!

0:41:33 > 0:41:35Well, shall we see what the rest of the family think of it?

0:41:35 > 0:41:37Sounds like a plan.

0:41:43 > 0:41:47Will and Kate have spent £2,500 to create a garden

0:41:47 > 0:41:50that would be great for the whole family.

0:41:50 > 0:41:53So, have the Rich brothers delivered?

0:41:53 > 0:41:56- Above and beyond, I think. - Yeah, definitely.

0:41:56 > 0:41:59If it had cost six times that much money,

0:41:59 > 0:42:01it still would have been worth it.

0:42:01 > 0:42:04So, yeah, definitely. Everybody's worked really, really hard, as well,

0:42:04 > 0:42:08- to get it done, and it's amazing, yeah.- Yeah.- Money well spent.- Yeah.

0:42:08 > 0:42:10- £2,500.- Yeah.- Decent sized money,

0:42:10 > 0:42:14but I think to transform a garden like this, I think it's awesome.

0:42:14 > 0:42:16- So you didn't go over budget, then? - No, definitely not.- Are you sure?

0:42:16 > 0:42:18You're not fibbing me, boys?

0:42:18 > 0:42:20- We're too good for that, Charlie. Come on.- Yeah?

0:42:21 > 0:42:24I think the garden meets all expectations, really.

0:42:24 > 0:42:25It's got the safety factor,

0:42:25 > 0:42:28keeping the children away from the steep drop -

0:42:28 > 0:42:31and the rest of it is just breathtaking, really.

0:42:31 > 0:42:34It shows you, with not a vast amount of money,

0:42:34 > 0:42:37how you can use very simple materials

0:42:37 > 0:42:41and make a huge difference to a garden.

0:42:41 > 0:42:45We're certainly going to be inviting people here a lot more,

0:42:45 > 0:42:47I think, now. Definitely now we've got a nice space

0:42:47 > 0:42:49where our kids can have a fun time,

0:42:49 > 0:42:51we can have a fun time and everybody's safe.

0:42:51 > 0:42:54- It's fantastic. Cheers, everybody.- Cheers!

0:42:54 > 0:42:56- Thanks very much.- Thanks very much.

0:42:56 > 0:42:59- Thank you for all you've done. - An absolute pleasure.

0:42:59 > 0:43:01Thank you. Yeah, brilliant, absolutely brilliant.
