0:00:02 > 0:00:04With her can-do attitude, love of simple gardens
0:00:04 > 0:00:06and decades of experience,
0:00:06 > 0:00:10Charlie Dimmock is one of Britain's best loved gardeners.
0:00:10 > 0:00:12Looking good, boys.
0:00:12 > 0:00:15But the new kids on the gardening block are the Rich brothers.
0:00:15 > 0:00:17We want to be the brothers
0:00:17 > 0:00:19that change people's perceptions of gardeners.
0:00:19 > 0:00:22Winners of multiple medals at the Chelsea Flower Show...
0:00:22 > 0:00:25- Oh, wow.- Get in!- Amazing, isn't it?
0:00:25 > 0:00:28..the boys have become known for their dramatic outdoor spaces.
0:00:30 > 0:00:34Now, these two different generations of gardening are going head-to-head.
0:00:34 > 0:00:38I know they've got a gold medal, but I can come up with a few ideas.
0:00:38 > 0:00:42They're meeting frustrated garden owners across the country...
0:00:42 > 0:00:45Not a lot going on. Not a lot.
0:00:45 > 0:00:46I don't know what to do with it.
0:00:46 > 0:00:49..And will each pitch them a design, based on their needs...
0:00:49 > 0:00:52- Wow!- ..and budget.
0:00:52 > 0:00:54- That sounds amazing.- It doesn't look like it could be our garden.
0:00:54 > 0:00:57- The winner...- Charlie.- Yes.
0:00:57 > 0:00:58Yeah!
0:00:58 > 0:01:00..brings their design to life...
0:01:00 > 0:01:03- Hold on.- Sweet as a nut.
0:01:03 > 0:01:05..and the loser has to help them build it.
0:01:05 > 0:01:07Keep working, keep working, boy.
0:01:07 > 0:01:09Whoa. Easy.
0:01:09 > 0:01:11This is what happens...
0:01:11 > 0:01:14Just get on with it. Some time today would be good.
0:01:14 > 0:01:15..when different styles collide...
0:01:15 > 0:01:18I think your brother is throwing the toys out of his pram.
0:01:18 > 0:01:20Are we doing this?
0:01:20 > 0:01:23..to turn garden dreams into reality.
0:01:23 > 0:01:25Open your eyes.
0:01:25 > 0:01:27It's lovely.
0:01:27 > 0:01:28Wow!
0:01:28 > 0:01:30Look at that.
0:01:30 > 0:01:32Whoa! That's not our garden.
0:01:42 > 0:01:44It's time for Charlie and the Rich brothers to find out
0:01:44 > 0:01:46which garden they are going head-to-head over this time.
0:01:48 > 0:01:50Julia, or Julie as she likes to be called,
0:01:50 > 0:01:53daughter Emma and the grandchildren.
0:01:53 > 0:01:55They all live together.
0:01:55 > 0:01:59- Cool.- Although that is a nice, big picture,
0:01:59 > 0:02:01- it is not a huge garden.- OK.
0:02:02 > 0:02:05Julia has lived in her house for ten years.
0:02:05 > 0:02:08More recently, her daughter Emma, who is a nurse,
0:02:08 > 0:02:11moved in with her two children, Lily, aged 11,
0:02:11 > 0:02:13and nine-year-old Jack.
0:02:13 > 0:02:18When I came here, the garden was very nice,
0:02:18 > 0:02:22but there was decking out the back, which I wasn't very keen on.
0:02:22 > 0:02:25There was all the little dry walls and the herb garden
0:02:25 > 0:02:28but right down the end beside the garage,
0:02:28 > 0:02:33there was a dip and it was just full of brambles and it was terrible.
0:02:33 > 0:02:37I had to put all the weedkiller down there and clear it all out.
0:02:37 > 0:02:39When Emma and the children moved in,
0:02:39 > 0:02:42they made the garden more child-friendly by creating
0:02:42 > 0:02:44a play area by the garage,
0:02:44 > 0:02:48but they have grown out of that now and it's a bit sad and neglected
0:02:48 > 0:02:51and the garden's not really working for them any more.
0:02:53 > 0:02:57But there is one part of the garden that's been a roaring success.
0:02:58 > 0:03:02The one thing that can't go is the artificial grass.
0:03:02 > 0:03:04It looked rather neat, didn't it?
0:03:04 > 0:03:06It did look a bit perfect for a mown lawn, didn't it?
0:03:06 > 0:03:09It has been an absolute dream.
0:03:09 > 0:03:11It's been wonderful.
0:03:11 > 0:03:16One of the reasons for it really was to just make it low-maintenance
0:03:16 > 0:03:20cos it is just us two and we don't have anybody really to help us
0:03:20 > 0:03:22so we need all the help we can get.
0:03:23 > 0:03:26Another aspect of the garden that the family enjoy
0:03:26 > 0:03:28was created by Jack, the youngest member.
0:03:30 > 0:03:33They have a little beach theme going on at this end
0:03:33 > 0:03:35- which they're quite keen on. - To keep?
0:03:35 > 0:03:39- Yeah, or sort of extend it, maybe. - OK.
0:03:39 > 0:03:41It's just evolved as we've gone along,
0:03:41 > 0:03:45and we've bought a lighthouse and we collect pebbles and shells
0:03:45 > 0:03:47whenever we go to the seaside
0:03:47 > 0:03:51and we've got a little seagull and we just keep buying
0:03:51 > 0:03:54things and making the beach.
0:03:54 > 0:03:58Despite its successes, overall the garden is falling short.
0:03:59 > 0:04:03It just doesn't feel very welcoming to me at the moment.
0:04:03 > 0:04:06Three things that I'd like...
0:04:07 > 0:04:13The height, like a pergola, arches, and things growing over,
0:04:13 > 0:04:16so to give us the shade but also
0:04:16 > 0:04:20to give another dimension to the garden as well.
0:04:20 > 0:04:24And I think Jack would like his beach to be a bit more...
0:04:24 > 0:04:26It'd be fantastic, wouldn't it?
0:04:26 > 0:04:30- Bit of a Mediterranean feel. - Yes. Yes.
0:04:30 > 0:04:33And to make the dream a reality,
0:04:33 > 0:04:36Julia is prepared to raid her savings.
0:04:36 > 0:04:40The budget is £3,000,
0:04:40 > 0:04:46which is pretty much all I've got left of my redundancy money,
0:04:46 > 0:04:48so I don't think I can go over!
0:04:48 > 0:04:50- HARRY:- It's not too bad, is it?
0:04:50 > 0:04:55It looks big but if it isn't that big in reality, we can spread that.
0:04:55 > 0:04:57If we're keeping the lawn, that takes up most of the garden.
0:04:57 > 0:05:01That's really going to put an influence on the design, isn't it?
0:05:01 > 0:05:03- You can't move it.- Can't move it.
0:05:05 > 0:05:07To get a better idea of the challenge they face,
0:05:07 > 0:05:09the designers head to Nottingham
0:05:09 > 0:05:12to meet the family and see the garden for themselves.
0:05:14 > 0:05:16Yeah, it's all looking a little tired, isn't it?
0:05:16 > 0:05:19Like the lavender's sort of... needs to come out, really.
0:05:19 > 0:05:22Yeah, a bit worn out, isn't it, in a way, this garden?
0:05:22 > 0:05:27Although the artificial grass looks in remarkably good nick.
0:05:27 > 0:05:30- Yeah, I'm impressed, actually. Not too bad.- Patio's good area.
0:05:30 > 0:05:33I think as a family, though, this could be a nice space to enjoy.
0:05:33 > 0:05:35Yeah, really lovely.
0:05:35 > 0:05:38Especially in the baking sun as well.
0:05:38 > 0:05:40Can't quite picture it, to be honest.
0:05:40 > 0:05:43Why are we not having it here? What's going on?
0:05:43 > 0:05:46Uninspired by the rundown garden, the brothers head inside
0:05:46 > 0:05:49in search of something that'll give them more of an idea
0:05:49 > 0:05:51about the family and what the garden needs to offer them.
0:05:55 > 0:05:57It's a nice, cosy kitchen, isn't it?
0:05:57 > 0:06:00- It is, it's gorgeous.- I think what I picked up on is these.
0:06:00 > 0:06:02They look just like kind of Mediterranean tiles, don't they?
0:06:02 > 0:06:05- They do.- Terracotta, warmth.
0:06:05 > 0:06:07Says it all. Drawing that into the garden,
0:06:07 > 0:06:10transporting them to a little Mediterranean space, be lovely.
0:06:10 > 0:06:12And then this, look at this!
0:06:12 > 0:06:15- What does that tell you? - Beach, yeah.
0:06:15 > 0:06:17The colour's got that kind of beach shacky feel, hasn't it?
0:06:19 > 0:06:23Meanwhile Charlie's finding out how the family actually use the garden.
0:06:23 > 0:06:25This is where Lily likes to do her gymnastics.
0:06:25 > 0:06:28Oh, so it's a very much used space?
0:06:28 > 0:06:30- It is, yeah. - And tell me about the beach.
0:06:30 > 0:06:32I quite like that bit.
0:06:32 > 0:06:33How did that come about?
0:06:34 > 0:06:37Jack collects meerkats and...
0:06:37 > 0:06:41Hold on, meerkats and beaches, they don't sort of go together.
0:06:41 > 0:06:42There's one on a deck chair!
0:06:42 > 0:06:44Oh! That's where it comes...
0:06:44 > 0:06:47- Right, so that set the theme.- Yes.
0:06:47 > 0:06:51So we build it around Jack's meerkat!
0:06:51 > 0:06:54It would actually be very nice if we could have some water
0:06:54 > 0:06:56- that would be like the sea.- OK.
0:06:56 > 0:07:01And in the sitting-room, the seaside theme continues.
0:07:01 > 0:07:02Oh, look at this, some more beach.
0:07:02 > 0:07:04More beach, definitely a theme.
0:07:04 > 0:07:06Yes, we've got that quilt, haven't we? Blue walls.
0:07:06 > 0:07:10I think it's going to be important they get a little bit of beach
0:07:10 > 0:07:11on there or some form of coast,
0:07:11 > 0:07:14maybe doesn't have to be that kind of obvious.
0:07:14 > 0:07:16What do you like about the garden?
0:07:18 > 0:07:21Nothing! Absolutely nothing!
0:07:21 > 0:07:22Are you gardeners?
0:07:22 > 0:07:26Not particularly. I like the sunshine. We get plenty of sunshine,
0:07:26 > 0:07:32you know, in the garden and it does get very hot, so, yeah...
0:07:32 > 0:07:34- So you'd like maybe a bit of shade? - A bit of shade, yeah.
0:07:34 > 0:07:38- So like the sun, but not all the time.- Yes.
0:07:38 > 0:07:42The £3,000 budget is well-suited to this smallish garden, but there's
0:07:42 > 0:07:45still a lot for the designers to think about.
0:07:45 > 0:07:48They need to retain the family's main seating area
0:07:48 > 0:07:49and the artificial lawn
0:07:49 > 0:07:52but they need to think about the beach theme,
0:07:52 > 0:07:54add shade and tackle the ugly side return.
0:07:59 > 0:08:00It's going to be a challenge,
0:08:00 > 0:08:03so the trio waste no time and head straight to their drawing boards.
0:08:05 > 0:08:07Each of them must come up with a design that works
0:08:07 > 0:08:08within Julia's budget,
0:08:08 > 0:08:11who will then have to choose the winning design.
0:08:11 > 0:08:13The loser will help the winner to build the garden.
0:08:16 > 0:08:20Julia's £3,000 will be used to buy all the materials for the new garden
0:08:20 > 0:08:22and Charlie and the Rich brothers,
0:08:22 > 0:08:24along with a crack team of landscapers,
0:08:24 > 0:08:26will provide the labour.
0:08:29 > 0:08:32It's time for the designers to pitch their ideas.
0:08:32 > 0:08:35Hi, guys. OK.
0:08:36 > 0:08:39So this is our design.
0:08:39 > 0:08:41Harry and David have seen how important it is
0:08:41 > 0:08:44for the family to have a sunshiny seaside theme.
0:08:44 > 0:08:46Will they go along with that
0:08:46 > 0:08:48or offer something completely different?
0:08:48 > 0:08:52Now we know that you really wanted this very romantic,
0:08:52 > 0:08:56quite rural style of Mediterranean garden that also emphasised
0:08:56 > 0:08:58- a coastal element as well.- Yeah.
0:08:58 > 0:09:01Whilst Charlie has learnt how important it is for the garden
0:09:01 > 0:09:05to work for all three generations. Will that give her the edge?
0:09:06 > 0:09:10I've really elaborated on the beach theme.
0:09:10 > 0:09:13So Jack's beach's got bigger.
0:09:14 > 0:09:18I've used slabs, tiles, small tiles over this whole area
0:09:18 > 0:09:22which will make it feel warmer and sunnier
0:09:22 > 0:09:24and then the side return here,
0:09:24 > 0:09:28having contrasting planting to the Mediterranean plants,
0:09:28 > 0:09:30so I'm going to go with a lot of ferns,
0:09:30 > 0:09:32picking up on the little ferns you've got growing in the wall
0:09:32 > 0:09:34but taller ones.
0:09:34 > 0:09:38Things like male fern and shuttlecock fern
0:09:38 > 0:09:42which look quite dramatic and lush and green.
0:09:42 > 0:09:44Wow!
0:09:44 > 0:09:46So, you know, this space outside the back door
0:09:46 > 0:09:47really isn't doing a lot at the moment
0:09:47 > 0:09:51and what we wanted to do is start the journey from there and we wanted
0:09:51 > 0:09:54that Mediterranean theme to kind of carry on through.
0:09:54 > 0:09:56So you know, we started off
0:09:56 > 0:09:59with this lovely kind of compacted natural surface
0:09:59 > 0:10:03and it's going to create this lovely kind of texture on top.
0:10:03 > 0:10:07Julia told Charlie about the intense sun the south facing garden gets,
0:10:07 > 0:10:10so what have the designers got in mind to deal with that?
0:10:10 > 0:10:14Here we wanted to put these three large olive trees in
0:10:14 > 0:10:19so you have this really nice Mediterranean kind of character
0:10:19 > 0:10:22and that will create a more dappled, shaded area here
0:10:22 > 0:10:26instead of it feeling quite overpowered and enclosed.
0:10:26 > 0:10:27And also they're evergreen,
0:10:27 > 0:10:30and they've just got their colouring and their scent,
0:10:30 > 0:10:33they've just got a really lovely atmosphere about them
0:10:33 > 0:10:36so you'll actually feel like you're amongst this rural olive grove.
0:10:36 > 0:10:38Over the seating area,
0:10:38 > 0:10:42we've got a simple pergola and take your grapevine
0:10:42 > 0:10:46up and over but I want this area, because it's so hot and sunny,
0:10:46 > 0:10:51it'll be a fantastic area for plants that are aromatic,
0:10:51 > 0:10:54so it will really intensify the scent.
0:10:54 > 0:10:58Both designers have addressed the family's need for more shade.
0:10:58 > 0:11:00It feels like they're neck-and-neck at the moment
0:11:00 > 0:11:03but Charlie is about to play her trump card.
0:11:03 > 0:11:08There's some water there so you can sit on the end of the seating bit
0:11:08 > 0:11:11there and dangle your feet into the water.
0:11:11 > 0:11:15Solar powered pump and water just running in cos it's a nice, sunny
0:11:15 > 0:11:19garden so you might as well use that sun to power the water feature.
0:11:19 > 0:11:22But the Rich brothers have a trick up their sleeve too.
0:11:22 > 0:11:26Pretty much the main feature is this archway here.
0:11:26 > 0:11:30So as you can see it's an archway of colour, which is quite important.
0:11:30 > 0:11:33What we want to do is create this archway and then use a few climbers
0:11:33 > 0:11:36to go up it so it gives you a lot of interest throughout the year,
0:11:36 > 0:11:39things like the clematis and also rose as well,
0:11:39 > 0:11:43things that have a nice, very pretty, very subtle scent,
0:11:43 > 0:11:47so you can journey through that and also within this area,
0:11:47 > 0:11:48you can see what we want to use,
0:11:48 > 0:11:52we want to try and re-use the stone you've got around the garden
0:11:52 > 0:11:54and also to make the wall a little bit longer,
0:11:54 > 0:11:57we'll introduce some new stone and provide you guys with this lovely,
0:11:57 > 0:12:02quite rustic dry stone wall and also it would be a great place to sit.
0:12:02 > 0:12:05Wow! Both designers have really pulled the stops out
0:12:05 > 0:12:08and packed a lot into this small garden.
0:12:08 > 0:12:11It's going to be the details that decide this one,
0:12:11 > 0:12:13and Julia and Emma are giving nothing away.
0:12:13 > 0:12:16They can only choose one, so whose will it be?
0:12:17 > 0:12:19Will they be won over by Charlie's water feature
0:12:19 > 0:12:21and warm Mediterranean hues
0:12:21 > 0:12:25or swayed by the brothers' dusty olive grove and dry stone wall?
0:12:25 > 0:12:27It's decision time.
0:12:27 > 0:12:29You'd be able to see that from upstairs.
0:12:29 > 0:12:32And look down on that. I think that'll be gorgeous.
0:12:33 > 0:12:36- It does look Mediterranean, doesn't it?- It does.
0:12:36 > 0:12:39- DAVID:- Yeah, so we went for that quite natural, rural,
0:12:39 > 0:12:43loose Mediterranean vibe. Really connected with them, actually.
0:12:43 > 0:12:45- EMMA:- It's got the water in it. - It's got the water.
0:12:45 > 0:12:48I did want water.
0:12:48 > 0:12:51And all these beach plants and things that she's got.
0:12:51 > 0:12:55Yeah, yeah. They will be gorgeous.
0:12:55 > 0:12:58And then you've got the shade here for your vine to go up over.
0:12:58 > 0:13:02- Yeah.- These lovely smelly plants.
0:13:02 > 0:13:04I like Jasmine.
0:13:04 > 0:13:06See, mine was full-on beach.
0:13:06 > 0:13:11- Full-on beach? Sand? - No, not sand. No, not sand.
0:13:11 > 0:13:13So picking up on what they've got,
0:13:13 > 0:13:16- but like two thirds of the garden. - Really?
0:13:16 > 0:13:19Which one is it going to be, then?
0:13:24 > 0:13:28So it was really, really difficult to choose, really.
0:13:29 > 0:13:32You know, there was lots of good things about them both.
0:13:32 > 0:13:35Love them both. We had to choose.
0:13:35 > 0:13:37Put us out of our misery!
0:13:40 > 0:13:42- Charlie!- It was the beach, Jack's beach.
0:13:42 > 0:13:45The whole garden pivots on a meerkat in a deckchair.
0:13:45 > 0:13:47LAUGHTER
0:13:47 > 0:13:48I feel really awful.
0:13:50 > 0:13:52I loved your design.
0:13:52 > 0:13:54- It is a shame. - It did look very romantic.
0:13:54 > 0:13:57It was, it was gorgeous.
0:13:57 > 0:14:02And... But I just think that the children would gain more
0:14:02 > 0:14:06from this, you know, like with the water feature.
0:14:06 > 0:14:10So Charlie wins this one but she'll certainly need the brothers' help
0:14:10 > 0:14:12if she's going to transform this joyless plot
0:14:12 > 0:14:15into a shingly shoreline to please the whole family.
0:14:18 > 0:14:20Early morning in Nottingham,
0:14:20 > 0:14:23and while Charlie is away fine tuning her design,
0:14:23 > 0:14:26project manager Bowen, along with his expert team of landscapers,
0:14:26 > 0:14:30Andy, Lee and Steve, are raring to go.
0:14:30 > 0:14:34They start by clearing all Julia's precious ornaments and pots
0:14:34 > 0:14:35out of the garden.
0:14:37 > 0:14:40# Waltzing Matilda, Waltzing Matilda... #
0:14:42 > 0:14:45Nice old clay edging. I think we'll save them.
0:14:46 > 0:14:48Don't know what they'll be used for
0:14:48 > 0:14:50but they'll come in for something later on in the project.
0:14:50 > 0:14:54One detail of Charlie's design that won Julia and Emma over
0:14:54 > 0:14:57was the water feature, which should be in the middle of
0:14:57 > 0:15:00what's currently an unexpected old concrete garage base.
0:15:00 > 0:15:03The lads have got their work cut out.
0:15:03 > 0:15:06We just hope the concrete is nice and thin, Bowen,
0:15:06 > 0:15:08so we can cut it out easy.
0:15:08 > 0:15:10- Famous last words. - Famous last words!
0:15:10 > 0:15:12It'll be fine. We'll sort it.
0:15:13 > 0:15:16Another key part of Charlie's design is a gabion wall,
0:15:16 > 0:15:19which won't just look great but is a fantastic opportunity
0:15:19 > 0:15:22to absorb some of the waste materials.
0:15:22 > 0:15:26And then we just recycle all the stone in the garden
0:15:26 > 0:15:27to face the gabions,
0:15:27 > 0:15:31and we can also use the beach cobbles that we've got coming.
0:15:31 > 0:15:34- OK.- To front the gabions by the beach.
0:15:34 > 0:15:37Just a thought, then, if we've got any concrete,
0:15:37 > 0:15:40if we're taking any concrete slabs up or anything, we want to save it,
0:15:40 > 0:15:42so we can break it up, put it in the back of the gabions,
0:15:42 > 0:15:44just use the good stone in the front.
0:15:44 > 0:15:46- And the top.- Yeah.
0:15:46 > 0:15:48And the top. Yeah.
0:15:48 > 0:15:50The bits what you'll see.
0:15:52 > 0:15:54The time for talking is over.
0:15:54 > 0:15:56The lads need to pick up their tools and crack on
0:15:56 > 0:15:59if they're going to have made sufficient progress
0:15:59 > 0:16:00by the time Charlie arrives.
0:16:03 > 0:16:06Digging out for the water feature.
0:16:06 > 0:16:09For the end, so it's butted up to the garage and then that will
0:16:09 > 0:16:14determine the height of the pontoon and me deck area.
0:16:14 > 0:16:18That's the plan, anyway. Until this is in, I can't work anything else,
0:16:18 > 0:16:20so...keep digging.
0:16:22 > 0:16:25Meanwhile, Andy and Bowen work out how to best lay out
0:16:25 > 0:16:28the paving stones in order to get the informal Mediterranean look
0:16:28 > 0:16:29that Charlie is after.
0:16:31 > 0:16:33I like the staggered joints.
0:16:33 > 0:16:34Yeah.
0:16:37 > 0:16:41I'd prefer to see that than that.
0:16:43 > 0:16:45That's a little bit boring,
0:16:45 > 0:16:48don't like the staggered joints.
0:16:49 > 0:16:51The straight joints.
0:16:51 > 0:16:54That's why you'd set it up before, it's a lot better.
0:16:54 > 0:16:56I always think with the natural stone as well,
0:16:56 > 0:16:58because the edges aren't straight,
0:16:58 > 0:17:00if you have a straight line,
0:17:00 > 0:17:03because you haven't got any clean cuts,
0:17:03 > 0:17:06the straight lines don't look that good.
0:17:06 > 0:17:08And it's not a clean line, is it?
0:17:08 > 0:17:10It would look better with the gravel going into it as well.
0:17:10 > 0:17:14I'm happy with that, think that'll look good, definitely.
0:17:14 > 0:17:16- It's a plan.- Shall we go for that?
0:17:16 > 0:17:17- Let's do it, let's do it. - Let's do it.
0:17:19 > 0:17:23While Andy gets started on laying the Mediterranean style paving,
0:17:23 > 0:17:26Lee's making great progress with the water feature.
0:17:29 > 0:17:31Brilliant. Perfect.
0:17:31 > 0:17:34Right. Now that's in, on a four-inch bed of sharp sand,
0:17:34 > 0:17:37just to level it up so it'll take any movement
0:17:37 > 0:17:39as we fill it with water.
0:17:39 > 0:17:40It's been a tough old dig,
0:17:40 > 0:17:42we've had some right rubble in here
0:17:42 > 0:17:45but it's finally in now, all levelled up.
0:17:45 > 0:17:48Charlie's design calls for more regular shaped planting beds
0:17:48 > 0:17:49than the old ones,
0:17:49 > 0:17:51so Bowen is salvaging what he can
0:17:51 > 0:17:54from the existing herb bed before it's destroyed.
0:17:54 > 0:17:59We're going to transplant some of this smaller fennel that we've got,
0:17:59 > 0:18:03we've got some oregano which we can put into the gabion walls over there.
0:18:03 > 0:18:05They'll spill out nicely
0:18:05 > 0:18:08and we've managed to save a lemon balm as well.
0:18:08 > 0:18:11So it's not all doom and gloom for this herb bed.
0:18:11 > 0:18:14It's going to have a second life throughout the garden
0:18:14 > 0:18:16and this one will live on in someone's dinner.
0:18:18 > 0:18:21Unfortunately, this rosemary is too big and woody
0:18:21 > 0:18:23to move successfully, so the best thing to do with that
0:18:23 > 0:18:27is pick the leaves and dry them to use in the kitchen.
0:18:30 > 0:18:32By the time Charlie and the Rich brothers arrive,
0:18:32 > 0:18:36the team has made great progress, the patio is all but finished,
0:18:36 > 0:18:38the deck and water feature are complete
0:18:38 > 0:18:41and Charlie starts as she means to go on, by cracking the whip.
0:18:43 > 0:18:46I am running a tight ship, so keep walking, get in that garden,
0:18:46 > 0:18:48get on with the gabions.
0:18:48 > 0:18:51So, Lee, I've got lots of ideas for these pallets.
0:18:51 > 0:18:55This one's quite a nice one. If you give me a hand up,
0:18:55 > 0:18:59I'm going to make it into a sort of planter, I think.
0:18:59 > 0:19:04So I might need a hand from you a bit later but if I start it off, yeah?
0:19:04 > 0:19:06- Saw.- Saw would be good!
0:19:07 > 0:19:10I might be by the end of doing the garden.
0:19:10 > 0:19:13- That's good.- Give me a shout if you need me.- OK.
0:19:13 > 0:19:15So the great thing is,
0:19:15 > 0:19:19a lot of our deliveries turn up on pallets that don't get collected,
0:19:19 > 0:19:22but do check before you start cutting them up
0:19:22 > 0:19:26because there's still a few firms that come and collect the pallets.
0:19:26 > 0:19:27But we've got lots,
0:19:27 > 0:19:31so I can sort of recycle the timber and make some quite quirky
0:19:31 > 0:19:33but interesting little features.
0:19:33 > 0:19:37So I'm going to cut this back to about there,
0:19:37 > 0:19:41so I'm going for a tall, narrow wall planter.
0:19:44 > 0:19:48The thing I like about the pallets is the timber is sort of
0:19:48 > 0:19:53slightly distressed, which will really work with the beach theme.
0:19:53 > 0:19:56My idea is that we're going to box this in,
0:19:56 > 0:20:01so using the spare bits of timber, so we'll box that in there
0:20:01 > 0:20:04which will make the bottom of the first planter.
0:20:04 > 0:20:08We'll probably need to box in a bit here,
0:20:08 > 0:20:11so that we've got two, then we'll take out those two,
0:20:11 > 0:20:14then we'll box in again here
0:20:14 > 0:20:18and leave two, take out two, box in there,
0:20:18 > 0:20:21so you end up with three little wooden troughs
0:20:21 > 0:20:22and the plants spill out,
0:20:22 > 0:20:25so this is the back and that's the front.
0:20:25 > 0:20:29It'll all make sense when it's up on the wall, I promise.
0:20:29 > 0:20:32Meanwhile, Harry and David have got their teeth
0:20:32 > 0:20:33into a bit of flatpack action.
0:20:33 > 0:20:37They're constructing the gabions for the new wall Charlie wants
0:20:37 > 0:20:39to construct down one side of the lawn.
0:20:39 > 0:20:42Believe it or not, these are actually going to look great.
0:20:42 > 0:20:44These are the gabions and you'd expect to see them
0:20:44 > 0:20:48retaining banks or preventing coastal erosion on the beach.
0:20:48 > 0:20:50They tend to be much larger, but what we're using here
0:20:50 > 0:20:55is the smaller garden kit, and what you get for your money, it's £11,
0:20:55 > 0:20:58and you get these individual wire mesh panels
0:20:58 > 0:21:01and then you also get these coils here
0:21:01 > 0:21:03and it's as simple as screwing them together,
0:21:03 > 0:21:06that holds them nice and firm and then they're ready to fill.
0:21:06 > 0:21:08There you are. This is the one I made earlier.
0:21:08 > 0:21:10I can only dream of making such a good one, Harry.
0:21:10 > 0:21:13Look at that. They are actually really simple to make, aren't they?
0:21:13 > 0:21:15But you've got to remember not to fix the top
0:21:15 > 0:21:17because you're going to have to fill them,
0:21:17 > 0:21:18and what's great in this garden,
0:21:18 > 0:21:20we've got tonnes of recycled material.
0:21:20 > 0:21:24So we've got this Victorian rope edging, we've bought some cobbles,
0:21:24 > 0:21:27which is going to have this lovely kind of rounded character
0:21:27 > 0:21:29and we've also got this natural stone,
0:21:29 > 0:21:32so it's kind of endless what you can put in them.
0:21:32 > 0:21:35You can put wine bottles, brick, and that's what's so nice,
0:21:35 > 0:21:40you can really create this lovely kind of texture and character within them.
0:21:40 > 0:21:43And they're modular and they create a really nice kind of structure
0:21:43 > 0:21:46to the garden, and that's what we're going to be doing over here.
0:21:48 > 0:21:51Charlie is trying to eke out Julia's £3,000 budget
0:21:51 > 0:21:53by recycling wherever possible.
0:21:53 > 0:21:57Talking of which, that pallet wall planter's coming on a treat.
0:21:59 > 0:22:02- Any line will do.- Any of them!
0:22:02 > 0:22:04- I got in there!- You beat me to it.
0:22:06 > 0:22:08Rustic, doing the rustic, I am.
0:22:08 > 0:22:11- Yeah!- It's been worn by the sea.
0:22:11 > 0:22:12Right!
0:22:16 > 0:22:18Right, can I decide which is up?
0:22:18 > 0:22:21You want that as up with the big one at the bottom.
0:22:21 > 0:22:24- That's going to be...- Yes.
0:22:24 > 0:22:26There's going to be a planter there. Things come over top, ain't it?
0:22:26 > 0:22:29That one there, that one there.
0:22:30 > 0:22:32That's it, look at that!
0:22:32 > 0:22:34Oh, yes, very nice!
0:22:36 > 0:22:39See, I'm going to do that with plants rather than beards, though!
0:22:39 > 0:22:43Harry and David have finally constructed all of the gabions
0:22:43 > 0:22:46and are taking time to place them correctly.
0:22:46 > 0:22:49Not too bad.
0:22:49 > 0:22:51It's really important when you're laying the gabions to put it on
0:22:51 > 0:22:54to a level, firm base, so what we've done is we've used
0:22:54 > 0:22:55a bit of sharp sand, nothing too much,
0:22:55 > 0:22:58but just enough that we can get a nice easy level,
0:22:58 > 0:22:59place them on, the hard work's done.
0:23:01 > 0:23:03- And the fun begins.- The fun begins.
0:23:03 > 0:23:04We've got a few ideas how we want to fill them,
0:23:04 > 0:23:08but I think we'll go and check with the captain, see what she thinks.
0:23:08 > 0:23:10Oh, here she comes.
0:23:11 > 0:23:12See now, that sounded ominous!
0:23:12 > 0:23:14What do you mean, "Oh, here she comes?"
0:23:14 > 0:23:16We were just about to see the captain.
0:23:16 > 0:23:17Yeah? Why?
0:23:17 > 0:23:21We've got some ideas about how we thought these could look good.
0:23:21 > 0:23:23They do look good, they look empty!
0:23:23 > 0:23:26Well, that's the thing. We're going for minimal.
0:23:26 > 0:23:27That's a bit too minimal.
0:23:27 > 0:23:31Going to have to speed up because I've got other creative plans
0:23:31 > 0:23:32for you over here.
0:23:32 > 0:23:35OK. What we were thinking of
0:23:35 > 0:23:39is using the cobbles as a kind of wave through the stone.
0:23:39 > 0:23:41- What do you think? - As long as it's quick!
0:23:41 > 0:23:43We'll chuck all the cobbles in, then!
0:23:43 > 0:23:45I think there. Cool.
0:23:45 > 0:23:48On it, then.
0:23:50 > 0:23:54The trick when filling the gabions is to make sure that you are keeping
0:23:54 > 0:23:57light on the face, because when you close the lid, you want
0:23:57 > 0:23:58to make sure it's nice and sharp.
0:23:58 > 0:24:01You know, you can have a tendency to bow out,
0:24:01 > 0:24:05and when it comes to the end, it's going to look quite untidy,
0:24:05 > 0:24:07so take your time because it's going to be the face
0:24:07 > 0:24:11and it's going to be the whole character of these gabions,
0:24:11 > 0:24:13so it's nice to spend that little bit of extra time
0:24:13 > 0:24:15and make it look really nice.
0:24:15 > 0:24:17All this natural stone in the garden is perfect
0:24:17 > 0:24:21for putting inside the gabions, and they're quite a contemporary look,
0:24:21 > 0:24:24but by putting something aged, it's got moss on,
0:24:24 > 0:24:27it really gives this kind of natural feeling, and over time,
0:24:27 > 0:24:30hopefully ferns will start growing out and it'll just completely
0:24:30 > 0:24:34soften this and make it kind of merge with the rest of the garden.
0:24:34 > 0:24:36So here we've got these concrete slabs.
0:24:36 > 0:24:39We've broken them up, and they're perfect for just using in the back,
0:24:39 > 0:24:42because you're not going to see them, they help to add the strength,
0:24:42 > 0:24:44and then the stuff that you've spent the money on,
0:24:44 > 0:24:47like these pebbles here, they go in the front and they look beautiful.
0:24:49 > 0:24:52While Bowen starts to paint the garage to emphasise
0:24:52 > 0:24:55that seaside theme, Charlie turns her attention
0:24:55 > 0:24:58to the once unpromising side return.
0:25:00 > 0:25:03This area here, Julie really wanted us to concentrate on,
0:25:03 > 0:25:06because she looks over it when she's doing the washing up,
0:25:06 > 0:25:11and also looks out from the lounge, and it was a bit dull and boring.
0:25:11 > 0:25:15So by putting the paving down, and it's a light coloured paving,
0:25:15 > 0:25:19and then the hogging, it's lifted the colours in here.
0:25:19 > 0:25:22And then by adding a few more plants,
0:25:22 > 0:25:24it will make it nice and attractive.
0:25:24 > 0:25:28Now, it is a difficult area to plant up, because it's shady,
0:25:28 > 0:25:33it's dull and it's damp, but look at what's naturally growing here.
0:25:33 > 0:25:35We've got lots of different ferns.
0:25:35 > 0:25:39We've got a hart's tongue fern here, we've got another fern there,
0:25:39 > 0:25:41and a different type again,
0:25:41 > 0:25:45so I'm going to replicate that by using this tassel fern.
0:25:45 > 0:25:49It's got these gorgeous, glossy ferny leaves,
0:25:49 > 0:25:53but other plants that are going to like those conditions are hostas
0:25:53 > 0:25:55and also Euonymus fortunei,
0:25:55 > 0:25:59that comes in lots of different variegations.
0:25:59 > 0:26:01And then over here -
0:26:01 > 0:26:04I was thinking of adding a bit of colour so Julie can see it
0:26:04 > 0:26:08from the lounge - this lovely double camellia.
0:26:08 > 0:26:09The thing about camellias,
0:26:09 > 0:26:14it's quite often they flower very early, and if there's a late frost,
0:26:14 > 0:26:18it damages the blooms, but by having it against the wall of the house,
0:26:18 > 0:26:22it will protect it, and also it gets the evening sun,
0:26:22 > 0:26:25which will then protect it even more.
0:26:25 > 0:26:28And it just lightens up this whole area.
0:26:32 > 0:26:34A bit of a rocky start with this one.
0:26:34 > 0:26:37These jokes are getting "boulder and boulder!"
0:26:37 > 0:26:40Yeah, that's so much better now, that looks sick.
0:26:42 > 0:26:45With the upcycled pallet planter in place,
0:26:45 > 0:26:48Charlie can now see if it's delivering what she hoped it would.
0:26:50 > 0:26:54Now I've got three planters here, one there, one there and one there,
0:26:54 > 0:26:57but I actually quite like this quite minimal.
0:26:57 > 0:27:00I think it's got a lot more impact on it.
0:27:00 > 0:27:02I mean, I could put one there,
0:27:02 > 0:27:07maybe even up there in a pot, and it just...
0:27:07 > 0:27:10So if I've got that one that way, that one that way
0:27:10 > 0:27:14and then that one that way, I think that's quite quirky, quite fun,
0:27:14 > 0:27:15I like that.
0:27:15 > 0:27:17The garden's starting to come together
0:27:17 > 0:27:22and Leigh has worked miracles around what was the concrete garage base.
0:27:22 > 0:27:24This is looking good, my deck area.
0:27:24 > 0:27:28Gone is the old rotten bridge that was here,
0:27:28 > 0:27:32and then we've used these old recycled scaffold boards,
0:27:32 > 0:27:35and the joists that we're using as groins,
0:27:35 > 0:27:37we have got recycled timber,
0:27:37 > 0:27:40again they were the joists from a house.
0:27:40 > 0:27:42So the only thing that we've splashed out on,
0:27:42 > 0:27:46keep to the theme there, keep to the theme,
0:27:46 > 0:27:48are these chunky round posts,
0:27:48 > 0:27:51the new sleepers that we've put across there
0:27:51 > 0:27:52to make this a raised bed,
0:27:52 > 0:27:54and that makes that access much easier.
0:27:55 > 0:27:58With most of the hard landscaping now complete,
0:27:58 > 0:28:01Charlie and David have turned their attention to the planting.
0:28:01 > 0:28:04Well, Charlie's pointing and giving the orders
0:28:04 > 0:28:06and David's doing as he's told.
0:28:06 > 0:28:09How many cistus have we got up there?
0:28:09 > 0:28:12- Two left.- Yeah, we really need that up in that bed there.
0:28:12 > 0:28:14So you see where that potting compost is?
0:28:14 > 0:28:16- Yeah.- They go in there.
0:28:16 > 0:28:17- Cool.- Then...
0:28:17 > 0:28:19Then what do you want up there?
0:28:22 > 0:28:25- A lavender? - Yeah, lavender could go...
0:28:27 > 0:28:29- ..here.- Just one or shall I bring down a couple?
0:28:29 > 0:28:31- One.- Just one?
0:28:31 > 0:28:33One. One, one, one.
0:28:36 > 0:28:38- There you go. - On that corner.- On the corner.
0:28:38 > 0:28:42Cool. And then you mentioned Carex?
0:28:42 > 0:28:43Oh, no, I changed my mind.
0:28:43 > 0:28:45Lavender. Right, those Armerias,
0:28:45 > 0:28:48- do you want to get the Armerias then, matey?- Aye.
0:28:50 > 0:28:52And taking her role as boss seriously,
0:28:52 > 0:28:55she's not finished with ordering the brothers around yet.
0:28:56 > 0:29:02I would like you to make a mosaic, in there, of octopus tentacles,
0:29:02 > 0:29:04or even squid tentacles.
0:29:04 > 0:29:06Ooh, I'll go for octopus and you can have squid.
0:29:06 > 0:29:07- Yeah.- Yeah?- Yeah, love that.
0:29:07 > 0:29:10Just along the back, so if she doesn't like it,
0:29:10 > 0:29:12she can just put some plant pots.
0:29:12 > 0:29:14She's going to love it, Charlie! Don't be so negative!
0:29:16 > 0:29:20Guess what? I know you're being artistic,
0:29:20 > 0:29:22but could you be artistic out of my way?!
0:29:24 > 0:29:27Ooh, what have you gone and done there?
0:29:27 > 0:29:29You're not having a head or anything?
0:29:30 > 0:29:34Oi, oi, oi. You're interrupting our creative space here.
0:29:34 > 0:29:37Lose the smiley face,
0:29:37 > 0:29:41and then we've got your tentacles and then another one here,
0:29:41 > 0:29:44which could even do that type of thing, yeah.
0:29:44 > 0:29:47- And then a smiley face. - No smiley faces!
0:29:47 > 0:29:48Have you drawn that smiley face?
0:29:48 > 0:29:51- No!- I feel like we've got it.
0:29:51 > 0:29:54First off, we've got to lay down a bed of this wet cement
0:29:54 > 0:29:56and that's going to kind of act like the canvas.
0:29:56 > 0:29:58That's what we're going to press the cobbles into.
0:29:58 > 0:30:01Then we've got to choose the stone, we've got three different types,
0:30:01 > 0:30:02we've got three different colours.
0:30:02 > 0:30:05One's a bit more shiny than the others, isn't it?
0:30:05 > 0:30:08Do you think Charlie wants a sand castle instead?
0:30:08 > 0:30:09So it's just a matter of choosing it,
0:30:09 > 0:30:12sketching down the design and then just putting them in.
0:30:12 > 0:30:15I think it's nice sometimes, if you do have an expanse of slabs
0:30:15 > 0:30:17or you want to create a little detail,
0:30:17 > 0:30:21then slabs, they have a lovely texture, but it's quite soft,
0:30:21 > 0:30:24whereas if you put a bit of pebble detail in there,
0:30:24 > 0:30:27then it actually makes a bit of a feature out of this section,
0:30:27 > 0:30:28and, you know, it's quite a used path,
0:30:28 > 0:30:32so to have that kind of nice little pattern on there
0:30:32 > 0:30:33will really make a difference.
0:30:33 > 0:30:37So what I'm putting down now is four spadefuls of sharp sand
0:30:37 > 0:30:41to one cement, and that's going to create a lovely strong mix
0:30:41 > 0:30:46and really allows the cobbles to really get cemented in.
0:30:46 > 0:30:47Hey!
0:30:47 > 0:30:49And then, actually, we're against the clock,
0:30:49 > 0:30:52because that thing's going to dry pretty fast,
0:30:52 > 0:30:54so we've got to crack on.
0:30:54 > 0:30:56Leigh's boardwalk area is looking great,
0:30:56 > 0:30:58but desperately in need of some planting
0:30:58 > 0:31:01to soften all the hard edges and add texture.
0:31:02 > 0:31:06So this area is really very minimal on the planting,
0:31:06 > 0:31:11but the plants need to have good structure and go in key places.
0:31:11 > 0:31:16So this lovely Carex, evergold, so it's evergreen,
0:31:16 > 0:31:19it's got these yellow and green striped leaves,
0:31:19 > 0:31:22with these little sedge seed heads,
0:31:22 > 0:31:25I'm going to put here, because it sort of just breaks that line,
0:31:25 > 0:31:29but really accentuates the boardwalk,
0:31:29 > 0:31:34the timber and what will be the cobbles and big round pebbles.
0:31:36 > 0:31:38Next, it's onto the water feature,
0:31:38 > 0:31:40which will really bring the seaside theme to life.
0:31:42 > 0:31:45This my water feature focal point,
0:31:45 > 0:31:48so it will draw your eye to the corner
0:31:48 > 0:31:51of my water feature-cum-foot-cooler.
0:31:51 > 0:31:53It's a bit of fun, really.
0:31:53 > 0:31:55It's somewhere where the children can sit
0:31:55 > 0:31:58and dangle their feet off of if it's really, really hot,
0:31:58 > 0:32:04or just make some paper boats to float around on the water's surface.
0:32:04 > 0:32:06This piece of driftwood was £40,
0:32:06 > 0:32:10so it wasn't cheap, but it is beautiful.
0:32:10 > 0:32:12I've drilled a hole just here,
0:32:12 > 0:32:15so the water's going to gently tumble out here.
0:32:15 > 0:32:17But I need to silicone it in position
0:32:17 > 0:32:20and just leave it for a minute or two.
0:32:20 > 0:32:22Well, probably about ten minutes.
0:32:23 > 0:32:26Charlie is securing one end of the hosepipe to the driftwood
0:32:26 > 0:32:30with silicone sealant. The other end will be attached to the pump,
0:32:30 > 0:32:32which is submerged in the pool.
0:32:34 > 0:32:38Right, just going to squidge that in a little bit.
0:32:41 > 0:32:44So I'm going to leave that to just go off.
0:32:44 > 0:32:48So I'm using a solar powered pump,
0:32:48 > 0:32:50and the great thing about solar powered pumps
0:32:50 > 0:32:53is these days they're way better than they used to be.
0:32:53 > 0:32:55So you get a panel and you get the pump,
0:32:55 > 0:32:58so it means you haven't got to run electrics.
0:32:58 > 0:33:01We pop the panel up on the roof of the garage,
0:33:01 > 0:33:04and then we've got the pump right down in here.
0:33:04 > 0:33:07You can see it bubbling away on this lovely sunny day.
0:33:08 > 0:33:12It will just give a really nice gentle trickle,
0:33:12 > 0:33:14so it will make you feel very cool.
0:33:14 > 0:33:17Because if it's really boiling hot at that end of the garden,
0:33:17 > 0:33:20you might want to come and sit down in the shady bit of the garden
0:33:20 > 0:33:22to cool off.
0:33:26 > 0:33:28Using driftwood for the water feature,
0:33:28 > 0:33:30along with rocks and pebbles,
0:33:30 > 0:33:33will help bring that seaside feeling into this garden.
0:33:33 > 0:33:36Designers Mark Whyte and Charmaine Ferguson,
0:33:36 > 0:33:39who have recently finished building a coastal garden in Kent,
0:33:39 > 0:33:42know that the best way to get inspiration for a coastal garden
0:33:42 > 0:33:44is from the beach itself.
0:33:47 > 0:33:51Materials we chose to use for the garden
0:33:51 > 0:33:54were obviously mainly different grades of shingle.
0:33:54 > 0:33:58We don't want to go with just a normal, just one grade of shingle.
0:33:58 > 0:34:02Beaches, we want to reflect again this whole natural feel,
0:34:02 > 0:34:05and the fact you can have a beach anywhere.
0:34:05 > 0:34:09By doing that, you need to incorporate different size of shingles.
0:34:09 > 0:34:11So you can go from tiny little stones
0:34:11 > 0:34:13up to the big rocks you see on the beach.
0:34:14 > 0:34:19Don't be afraid to plant wild plants that you see on the beach.
0:34:19 > 0:34:22They are plants that actually naturally go there,
0:34:22 > 0:34:26so they grow in shingle, so they thrive without soil and things.
0:34:26 > 0:34:30You don't need, like, pristine soil compost and all this sort of thing
0:34:30 > 0:34:33around your plants. There's so many of these plants,
0:34:33 > 0:34:34like sea kale and bits and pieces,
0:34:34 > 0:34:38that you find wild on the beach that thrive,
0:34:38 > 0:34:42that look stunning, and would look stunning in anyone's garden.
0:34:42 > 0:34:45So don't be afraid to just veer off from your peonies
0:34:45 > 0:34:47and move into some sort of things
0:34:47 > 0:34:51that you might not necessarily see at the garden centre.
0:34:51 > 0:34:54There are many websites that sell coastal wild flowerpot plants
0:34:54 > 0:34:57like sea kale, valerian and marram grass,
0:34:57 > 0:35:00so you can create touches of your very own beach,
0:35:00 > 0:35:02no matter where you live.
0:35:06 > 0:35:09These plants are used to thriving in harsh conditions.
0:35:09 > 0:35:12They don't really need to worry about
0:35:12 > 0:35:15being looked after too much,
0:35:15 > 0:35:18so you can pop them in the ground and then they're going to be
0:35:18 > 0:35:20up and all over the place within a few months.
0:35:20 > 0:35:21When laying out the garden,
0:35:21 > 0:35:25the couple again turned to the natural contours of the shoreline
0:35:25 > 0:35:27for their blueprint.
0:35:27 > 0:35:30We've got these nice sort of curved pathways
0:35:30 > 0:35:34to get to the seating area, and sort of meander through all the plants.
0:35:34 > 0:35:38The plants are sort of raised slightly on mounds,
0:35:38 > 0:35:41which we'd naturally get on the beach.
0:35:41 > 0:35:45So yeah, we wanted to create that, to give a nice natural feel.
0:35:45 > 0:35:49In this coastal garden, the clients wanted a sheltered seating area,
0:35:49 > 0:35:51where the family could gather,
0:35:51 > 0:35:53much as you might shelter in the sand dunes
0:35:53 > 0:35:54with a barbecue or picnic.
0:35:54 > 0:35:57We've got this lovely sunken area,
0:35:57 > 0:36:01so they can sort of entertain in that and feel quite enclosed
0:36:01 > 0:36:03in that area, sort of quite a fun area.
0:36:03 > 0:36:06It's got a nice fire pit in the middle,
0:36:06 > 0:36:09so you can have the family round in the winter time, even,
0:36:09 > 0:36:12and you can sit in this nice cosy area,
0:36:12 > 0:36:14which you would do maybe on the beach.
0:36:14 > 0:36:16You might light a barbecue or something,
0:36:16 > 0:36:18might have a little fire on the beach.
0:36:18 > 0:36:21It's kind of got a real communal feel.
0:36:21 > 0:36:23Back in Nottingham, the newly laid patio
0:36:23 > 0:36:26is where Julia and her family will gather in future.
0:36:26 > 0:36:30Here, the need is to ensure it has some shade from the sun,
0:36:30 > 0:36:33and so the team are erecting a pergola.
0:36:33 > 0:36:34This one's a simple shape.
0:36:34 > 0:36:36It's just an off-the-shelf kit
0:36:36 > 0:36:39available from most large garden centres or online.
0:36:43 > 0:36:45Once the silicone is dry on the upcycled fountain,
0:36:45 > 0:36:48it's time to rig up the water feature.
0:36:48 > 0:36:50I think that's lovely.
0:36:50 > 0:36:52Nice bit of detail on it.
0:36:52 > 0:36:54Nice sound.
0:36:54 > 0:36:56Lovely. Really pretty.
0:36:56 > 0:36:58The garden is nearing completion,
0:36:58 > 0:37:01but Charlie's keen to add more planting.
0:37:01 > 0:37:04So this border here, minimal planting,
0:37:04 > 0:37:08and I'm picking up the planting that Julie's already got.
0:37:08 > 0:37:11So she already had some Festuca glaucas
0:37:11 > 0:37:14randomly through the raised bed,
0:37:14 > 0:37:18so I'm just putting another one in, just to break it up a bit more.
0:37:18 > 0:37:22So it's got that blue-green colour, which sort of says seaside.
0:37:22 > 0:37:25If you look at the plants at the seaside,
0:37:25 > 0:37:30you'll find most of them have a sort of blue-green colour to them,
0:37:30 > 0:37:35so it sort of protects them from the intense extremes
0:37:35 > 0:37:40of sun, salt water and wind exposure.
0:37:40 > 0:37:44So if we mulch through with the sand, then put the pebbles over,
0:37:44 > 0:37:46it just lightens it up.
0:37:46 > 0:37:47Yeah, very beachy, isn't it?
0:37:47 > 0:37:49It looks very beachy.
0:37:49 > 0:37:52Harry is putting the finishing touches to the mosaic,
0:37:52 > 0:37:54set into the path.
0:37:54 > 0:37:56I think it's gone really, really well, hasn't it?
0:37:56 > 0:37:57Yeah, it's been a lot of fun. What's so nice
0:37:57 > 0:38:01is Charlie's using these same pebbles throughout the whole garden,
0:38:01 > 0:38:03so there's a sense of unity and a sense of detail.
0:38:03 > 0:38:06And I think it's really nice introducing a bit of art
0:38:06 > 0:38:08- into the garden.- Yeah.- Hopefully, it will inspire the kids
0:38:08 > 0:38:10to do their own little bit somewhere.
0:38:10 > 0:38:12I've thoroughly enjoyed it.
0:38:12 > 0:38:15- Best bit of the day!- It's true, something so simple, you know,
0:38:15 > 0:38:17and it's just so effective.
0:38:17 > 0:38:19I think it works really well,
0:38:19 > 0:38:22because you've got the simplicity of the slabs,
0:38:22 > 0:38:24and then the detail of the pebbles.
0:38:24 > 0:38:28Run past this part of the path where you get caught by the octopus.
0:38:28 > 0:38:30Yeah.
0:38:30 > 0:38:33As the last few plants are potted up and the finishing touches
0:38:33 > 0:38:35are added to the scheme, the garden is finished.
0:38:42 > 0:38:44Before they called the Garden Rescue team,
0:38:44 > 0:38:47Julia and Emma's garden was tired and scruffy
0:38:47 > 0:38:50and uninviting for both them and the children, Jack and Lily.
0:38:53 > 0:38:55Now it's had a £3,000 makeover,
0:38:55 > 0:38:59and Charlie has spent every penny of that money creating a fun space
0:38:59 > 0:39:03for the children and a relaxing seaside inspired haven
0:39:03 > 0:39:05for mum Emma and grandma Julia.
0:39:08 > 0:39:11Charlie spent £670 replacing the old, dull patio slabs
0:39:11 > 0:39:14with rustic finished natural sandstone,
0:39:14 > 0:39:16to give that Mediterranean warmth.
0:39:19 > 0:39:22A seaside isn't a seaside without water,
0:39:22 > 0:39:25so Charlie allocated £500 to her gently trickling
0:39:25 > 0:39:28driftwood water feature and boardwalk area.
0:39:31 > 0:39:33The pergola was a snip at £300,
0:39:33 > 0:39:36and will provide the family with some much-needed shade
0:39:36 > 0:39:38in this sunny south-facing garden.
0:39:40 > 0:39:44The budget was eked out by recycling some plants in the garden,
0:39:44 > 0:39:47but Charlie splashed out on an additional £300
0:39:47 > 0:39:50on shade-loving plants for the gloomy side return
0:39:50 > 0:39:54and additional seaside plants to enhance the beach theme.
0:39:55 > 0:40:00And last but not least, the gabions came in at £550.
0:40:00 > 0:40:02They're filled with pebbles and rocks
0:40:02 > 0:40:04and are reminiscent of the coastline.
0:40:04 > 0:40:07They also provide additional seating in the garden.
0:40:07 > 0:40:11Julia and Emma desperately wanted a garden the whole family could enjoy
0:40:11 > 0:40:15and relax in, and they were prepared to plunder their savings
0:40:15 > 0:40:16to make it happen.
0:40:16 > 0:40:18It's time to find out if Charlie has delivered.
0:40:18 > 0:40:22One, two, three - open your eyes.
0:40:22 > 0:40:23Wow.
0:40:23 > 0:40:26Look at that!
0:40:28 > 0:40:30Oh, look! Ooh, I've got a thing on the wall.
0:40:30 > 0:40:32You've got a thing on the wall!
0:40:32 > 0:40:35You see, I know you're into your crafts,
0:40:35 > 0:40:38so we got a bit crafty in the garden.
0:40:38 > 0:40:41So this is just a pallet that we've made into a planter,
0:40:41 > 0:40:44and it just adds a bit of interest to the wall.
0:40:44 > 0:40:45Oh, I love that.
0:40:45 > 0:40:47A pallet, you can do so much stuff with.
0:40:47 > 0:40:49You can, so versatile!
0:40:49 > 0:40:51This bed here...
0:40:51 > 0:40:54- There's a hole in the ground.- Yeah, which is where your rosemary was.
0:40:54 > 0:40:56This is going to be a lovely scented bed.
0:40:56 > 0:41:01We've got Daphne in there, Hebes, hostas, black sambuca.
0:41:01 > 0:41:04This area here, you've got a lovely Tracheospermum
0:41:04 > 0:41:08that's got a really sweet jasmine scent that will climb up there.
0:41:08 > 0:41:09It will root down through,
0:41:09 > 0:41:12because we've got soil underneath that bit there, and it's evergreen,
0:41:12 > 0:41:14so it will come up and really shade.
0:41:14 > 0:41:18But then I think you should train your grapevine this way along
0:41:18 > 0:41:21and up and over, so that the grapes hang down.
0:41:21 > 0:41:24We've got lavenders everywhere.
0:41:24 > 0:41:26They'll waft around.
0:41:26 > 0:41:31So this will be a really lovely Mediterranean scented seating area,
0:41:31 > 0:41:33but slightly shady.
0:41:33 > 0:41:35Fab, thank you!
0:41:35 > 0:41:37Do you like it?
