0:00:04 > 0:00:07In Britain, we have an amazing array of places we call home,

0:00:07 > 0:00:09from thatched cottages and conversions

0:00:09 > 0:00:11to terraced housing and tower blocks.

0:00:11 > 0:00:13But when it comes to interior design,

0:00:13 > 0:00:16we don't always make the best of the rooms we live in.

0:00:16 > 0:00:20So we asked 24 amateur interior designers to show us

0:00:20 > 0:00:22how it should be done.

0:00:23 > 0:00:25I'm really, really pleased with that.

0:00:25 > 0:00:27Perfect!

0:00:27 > 0:00:29Oh, God, that's tight.

0:00:29 > 0:00:34Each time, the would-be designers took on similar rooms in neighbouring homes.

0:00:34 > 0:00:38And after eight heats and two quarterfinals, we're down to the last four.

0:00:39 > 0:00:41They've shown skill...

0:00:41 > 0:00:44Slightly unconventional, sewing in the dark.

0:00:44 > 0:00:45..creativity...

0:00:45 > 0:00:48- I don't feel at all stressed. - ..ingenuity...

0:00:48 > 0:00:51I can plant something in the back of my mind, it just ticks over and once

0:00:51 > 0:00:54it's agreed an idea, it seems to just pop into the front of my head.

0:00:54 > 0:00:55..and showmanship.

0:00:55 > 0:00:58The contrast of that is really going to stand out beautifully.

0:00:58 > 0:01:01Deciding who has what it takes to make it through to the final

0:01:01 > 0:01:05are president-elect of the British Institute of Interior Design,

0:01:05 > 0:01:06Daniel Hopwood...

0:01:06 > 0:01:10At the semifinals, we have got four very talented designers.

0:01:10 > 0:01:12The challenge for them is to see

0:01:12 > 0:01:15if they've got more than their standard repertoire.

0:01:15 > 0:01:19..and interior stylist and magazine journalist, Sophie Robinson.

0:01:19 > 0:01:22We're going to be getting a lot more astute with our judging

0:01:22 > 0:01:24and less forgiving of mistakes.

0:01:24 > 0:01:28The last four amateur designers must now fight it out for just two

0:01:28 > 0:01:30places in the grand final.

0:01:40 > 0:01:44This time our amateurs will be redesigning one front room each

0:01:44 > 0:01:46in four large Victorian houses.

0:01:47 > 0:01:51The final four have shown skill and creativity to get here.

0:01:51 > 0:01:55The designers going through are Luke and Susan.

0:01:55 > 0:01:56SMATTERING OF APPLAUSE

0:01:56 > 0:01:58Jordan...

0:01:58 > 0:01:59and Sarah.

0:01:59 > 0:02:01Well done, guys.

0:02:01 > 0:02:04Now they must prove they've learned lessons along the way

0:02:04 > 0:02:07from their first two professional projects.

0:02:07 > 0:02:10I just worry that it's just going to be dull.

0:02:10 > 0:02:16With £1,500 to spend, the budget is bigger and expectations higher.

0:02:16 > 0:02:19There is a lot to do, how is he going to get this room finished?

0:02:19 > 0:02:22I just don't see it working OK.

0:02:22 > 0:02:24Whatever, it's done.

0:02:24 > 0:02:27Only two can make it to the final.

0:02:27 > 0:02:30And the designers going through to the finals are...

0:02:40 > 0:02:43In the 19th century, six million homes were built in Britain,

0:02:43 > 0:02:46making it the biggest housing boom this country had ever seen.

0:02:46 > 0:02:50This street of Victorian houses in Moseley were built in the 1890s

0:02:50 > 0:02:54at a time when Birmingham was the manufacturing workshop of the world.

0:02:54 > 0:02:56These homes weren't built for the workers, though,

0:02:56 > 0:03:00they were built for the industrial bosses who shaped the city.

0:03:02 > 0:03:05This was a time when architects and developers were wildly

0:03:05 > 0:03:09experimenting with reviving styles from the past. On the house

0:03:09 > 0:03:13behind me you can see black and white timber, called magpie style.

0:03:13 > 0:03:15obviously referencing Tudor architecture.

0:03:15 > 0:03:18And other houses on the street, you can see baroque plasterwork

0:03:18 > 0:03:20nodding to the Queen Anne style.

0:03:20 > 0:03:24But one influence runs through all the homes on this street -

0:03:24 > 0:03:26the ever popular arts and crafts style.

0:03:28 > 0:03:32Emerging in the late 1850s as a reaction to mass production,

0:03:32 > 0:03:36the arts and crafts movement harked back to a romanticised past

0:03:36 > 0:03:39when craftsmen were famed for their artistry at a time

0:03:39 > 0:03:41when most of us worked in the factory.

0:03:41 > 0:03:43It celebrated the handmade.

0:03:43 > 0:03:45It became immensely successful

0:03:45 > 0:03:49and has gone on to influence British architecture ever since.

0:03:54 > 0:03:57Now four of these magnificent homes will be

0:03:57 > 0:03:59the setting for our semifinal.

0:03:59 > 0:04:02The amateurs must create suitably impressive designs

0:04:02 > 0:04:04for these Victorian front rooms.

0:04:05 > 0:04:10In her heat, Sarah first showed off her craft skills, redesigning

0:04:10 > 0:04:14a traditional Edwardian bedroom before giving a country cottage

0:04:14 > 0:04:18front room a vintage woodland look with a slight modern edge.

0:04:18 > 0:04:21Feels pretty amazing to have made it as far as the semifinal.

0:04:21 > 0:04:24I'm beginning to feel a bit like a designer!

0:04:24 > 0:04:28Luke first updated a converted warehouse to an African-inspired

0:04:28 > 0:04:30brief with ingenious home-made furniture,

0:04:30 > 0:04:34before applying his brainpower to a tower block bedroom

0:04:34 > 0:04:36with an engineered industrial scheme.

0:04:36 > 0:04:41I deal with pressure in a peculiar way - the harder it gets,

0:04:41 > 0:04:44the calmer I become, apart from the last 15 minutes.

0:04:46 > 0:04:48Jordan initially gave a Regency living room

0:04:48 > 0:04:52a restrained scheme with a touch of Hollywood glamour.

0:04:52 > 0:04:55And then updated a country cottage front room with

0:04:55 > 0:04:57an eye-catching colourful design.

0:04:57 > 0:05:00I've always said from the very beginning that I'm in this to

0:05:00 > 0:05:04win it, and I think it's definitely brought out my competitive streak.

0:05:06 > 0:05:08In Susan's heat,

0:05:08 > 0:05:11she gave a Victorian terrace front room a lively shabby chic look.

0:05:11 > 0:05:15And then turned her hand to transforming a bachelor's bedroom

0:05:15 > 0:05:17with a slick masculine design.

0:05:18 > 0:05:22I suppose, really, I would really like to win, but wouldn't everybody?

0:05:29 > 0:05:33The first of our vast Victorian homes belongs to Philip and Sue.

0:05:33 > 0:05:36The front room is their main dining room,

0:05:36 > 0:05:39where their love of Asia is on full display.

0:05:39 > 0:05:42Because we've got all these Asian artefacts, it would actually be

0:05:42 > 0:05:46very good to get a bit of an Eastern slant in here. And it would be lovely

0:05:46 > 0:05:50to feel that you're sitting in a bit of Asia, really, wouldn't it?

0:05:50 > 0:05:54We don't want it looking like a Chinese gambling house.

0:05:54 > 0:05:59- No.- You know, it needs to maintain its Victorian elegance.

0:05:59 > 0:06:01Working in such grand rooms will prove

0:06:01 > 0:06:04a challenge for the semifinalists,

0:06:04 > 0:06:07so the judges want to see the potential of each room first.

0:06:07 > 0:06:11This is a great room to work on, it's got perfect proportions,

0:06:11 > 0:06:14nice high ceilings, clearly designed for a dining table

0:06:14 > 0:06:17because the shape of the room is slightly rectangular.

0:06:17 > 0:06:21Clearly, also, it's a grand room because you can tell by the height

0:06:21 > 0:06:25of the skirting. Also, it's at the front of the house and is defined

0:06:25 > 0:06:28by the bay window which is bringing in a beautiful amount of light.

0:06:28 > 0:06:31But the big challenge is going to be making sense of it all,

0:06:31 > 0:06:33because there is lots and lots of knick-knackery,

0:06:33 > 0:06:36and nothing's really cohesively displayed, is it?

0:06:36 > 0:06:39I think the designer should really go for it, it can't be

0:06:39 > 0:06:42a half-baked attempt. Just like the Victorians would have done.

0:06:42 > 0:06:45If you're going to pick a theme, make sure you carry it throughout the whole room.

0:06:47 > 0:06:52Taking on this Asian-inspired brief will be mum, Sarah.

0:06:52 > 0:06:54She has proven her abilities with creativity

0:06:54 > 0:06:58and excellent crafting skills, such as roller stencilling

0:06:58 > 0:07:01and re-upholstery, in both her previous projects.

0:07:01 > 0:07:03But she needs to show the judges

0:07:03 > 0:07:06that she can take risks with her designs.

0:07:06 > 0:07:09I've put together some ideas I'd like to show you.

0:07:09 > 0:07:11OK, thank you.

0:07:11 > 0:07:14Sarah's had one week to come up with a scheme that matches

0:07:14 > 0:07:17the homeowners' brief, but this is the first time she's meeting

0:07:17 > 0:07:19her client and seeing the room.

0:07:19 > 0:07:22I know that green is an auspicious colour in the East

0:07:22 > 0:07:25and I thought that would be a good way to introduce.

0:07:25 > 0:07:28- And it will work very well with the rosewood, the furniture.- Yes.

0:07:28 > 0:07:32I think that most of the houses in this road were built around 1890,

0:07:32 > 0:07:35and I found some wallpaper that was first produced in 1890

0:07:35 > 0:07:37and found in a house in London.

0:07:37 > 0:07:40- And it's a fantastic design with some bamboo and parrots.- Oh, lovely.

0:07:40 > 0:07:42I would like to wallpaper the whole room,

0:07:42 > 0:07:44I don't want to hold back and just do one wall.

0:07:44 > 0:07:47- I think it'd be lovely to create an elegant room with it.- Yeah.

0:07:49 > 0:07:52For her Asian-flavoured scheme, Sarah is using chinoiserie-style

0:07:52 > 0:07:55wallpaper and green traditional fabrics.

0:07:55 > 0:07:59She also plans SOME more modern touches.

0:07:59 > 0:08:02What I'd like to do is build a very simple fire surround for you,

0:08:02 > 0:08:05and that'll be painted the same colour as the skirting.

0:08:05 > 0:08:09I've actually got a sample of that and I think it just...

0:08:09 > 0:08:12It will allow all of your treasures and things like that to shine out.

0:08:12 > 0:08:15Yes, because the hearth, we've not really done anything with,

0:08:15 > 0:08:17and it does need a bit of updating.

0:08:17 > 0:08:21I'm really pleased to see she's picked up on the chinoiserie trend,

0:08:21 > 0:08:24and green, what an elegant colour choice.

0:08:24 > 0:08:25But, this one, I don't know,

0:08:25 > 0:08:29it's edging on being a little bit boring and a bit too tasteful.

0:08:29 > 0:08:32We need something just to lift that scheme.

0:08:34 > 0:08:38Like all the designers, Sarah now has 48 hours spread over

0:08:38 > 0:08:43three days, the help of a builder and £1,500 to create her room.

0:08:45 > 0:08:49Just getting the first coat of the emulsion onto the cornicing.

0:08:49 > 0:08:50It is a nightmare.

0:08:50 > 0:08:54So this is going to be the whole of the ceiling and all the picture rail

0:08:54 > 0:08:56and the cornicing is all going into this green.

0:08:56 > 0:09:00It's going to be quite green, the whole room. It's going to be great.

0:09:05 > 0:09:07Just a few doors down,

0:09:07 > 0:09:11our second home belongs to musicians Alison and Graham.

0:09:11 > 0:09:13They bought the house two years ago and inherited the colour

0:09:13 > 0:09:16scheme in the front room, but it's not to their taste.

0:09:18 > 0:09:21We didn't get off to a good start with this room, we put the piano

0:09:21 > 0:09:28in the wrong place and the rest of it is somebody else's choice.

0:09:28 > 0:09:30It's not a welcoming room, somehow,

0:09:30 > 0:09:32it's not a comfortable room to sit in.

0:09:32 > 0:09:36It always looks dark, no matter how bright the sun is shining outside.

0:09:36 > 0:09:39- But it's just not very inviting. - It's not very inviting at all.

0:09:39 > 0:09:41We come in here to do music,

0:09:41 > 0:09:44but then we go and sit in the back, which is a lot lighter.

0:09:46 > 0:09:48Alison and Graham's music room.

0:09:48 > 0:09:51They've got these display cabinets to show off their china.

0:09:51 > 0:09:54I think that would have been very similar to what happened

0:09:54 > 0:09:58with the Victorians, they would have had the giant sideboard

0:09:58 > 0:09:59and a great display on top.

0:09:59 > 0:10:01So it's going in keeping

0:10:01 > 0:10:04but they're just a little heavy for this room, aren't they?

0:10:04 > 0:10:06You want to group them, bring them all together

0:10:06 > 0:10:08so they create more a focal point and make a pleasing display

0:10:08 > 0:10:11and not dot them around willy-nilly.

0:10:12 > 0:10:15Taking on this challenge is 33-year-old sales assistant

0:10:15 > 0:10:17Luke, from Oxford.

0:10:18 > 0:10:20Luke has shown creative flair

0:10:20 > 0:10:23and inventiveness in his previous two projects,

0:10:23 > 0:10:25from building cat furniture

0:10:25 > 0:10:27to cutting-edge light fixtures.

0:10:27 > 0:10:30But this Victorian front room is larger than anything he's

0:10:30 > 0:10:35tackled yet, so he must prove he can upscale his designs.

0:10:35 > 0:10:39I'm going to use different tones of the same colour,

0:10:39 > 0:10:44so obviously you can see here that you've got sort of these slightly creamy colours.

0:10:44 > 0:10:49This wallpaper here is going to go on the chimney breast.

0:10:49 > 0:10:50Oh, right!

0:10:50 > 0:10:54The space I want to create on the left and the right of this

0:10:54 > 0:10:59wonderful fireplace to display the majority of your pottery.

0:10:59 > 0:11:01Are you intending to put shelves in both, are you?

0:11:01 > 0:11:05Yes, because we're going to do a few tricks with lighting to

0:11:05 > 0:11:10create a more visual impact but also make the room look even lighter.

0:11:10 > 0:11:13Along with the illuminated shelves, he's planning an elaborate

0:11:13 > 0:11:15wall-mounted CD unit.

0:11:15 > 0:11:22CDs are just physically going to stack inside a big hoop on the wall.

0:11:22 > 0:11:25His modern music room design will include an unusual

0:11:25 > 0:11:27way of displaying instruments.

0:11:27 > 0:11:30This is the method by which I'd imagined actually

0:11:30 > 0:11:32displaying your items.

0:11:32 > 0:11:36These are retort stands, and this way you can remove them

0:11:36 > 0:11:38and use them and put them back.

0:11:38 > 0:11:41He's really addressing the brief with the palate of colours.

0:11:41 > 0:11:43They're contemporary and they're light

0:11:43 > 0:11:45and will help that room feel a lot more sunny,

0:11:45 > 0:11:48but he's also adding lots of layers of artificial lighting as well.

0:11:48 > 0:11:51The lit floating shelves...

0:11:51 > 0:11:53But is he going to deliver?

0:12:00 > 0:12:03- Just hold yours there.- Yeah, got it.

0:12:03 > 0:12:05This may be Luke's most ambitious project to date,

0:12:05 > 0:12:09but he's taking a typically cerebral approach.

0:12:09 > 0:12:12I've got a clear schedule in my mind.

0:12:12 > 0:12:15'Today is just going to be all about paint.'

0:12:15 > 0:12:18That's the first thing, we've got to get rid of that red,

0:12:18 > 0:12:20so that's going to take a lot of undercoats.

0:12:20 > 0:12:23Yeah, I'm going to be doing a lot of painting,

0:12:23 > 0:12:25but, hey, that's the gig, right?

0:12:32 > 0:12:35- What noise does a dinosaur make? - Roar!- Raaarr!

0:12:36 > 0:12:40The third front room is a family room taken over by toys,

0:12:40 > 0:12:44with dated decor inherited by owners Cally, Ian and son Alfie.

0:12:45 > 0:12:49I'd like it to be lighter and airier

0:12:49 > 0:12:53and just to be more sort of comfortable and inviting.

0:12:53 > 0:12:57Have a room that we can still keep his toys and his books in

0:12:57 > 0:13:01without it actually looking like a bomb site like it does now.

0:13:04 > 0:13:06- Oh, dear.- Yeah.

0:13:06 > 0:13:08Playschool heaven, isn't it?

0:13:08 > 0:13:11Storage is a key issue in this room.

0:13:11 > 0:13:12You know, baskets that pull out,

0:13:12 > 0:13:15open shelving so the child can even tidy up

0:13:15 > 0:13:18after themselves at the end of the day in an ideal world.

0:13:18 > 0:13:19Just because it's full of kids' toys

0:13:19 > 0:13:22doesn't mean it has to look like a playschool.

0:13:22 > 0:13:25Well, there are examples in history of that. The Victorians were

0:13:25 > 0:13:29great family people, it was all about family harmony.

0:13:29 > 0:13:32So just as the Victorians lived in one room doing

0:13:32 > 0:13:36lots of different things, perhaps Ian and Cally can have a room

0:13:36 > 0:13:40that is multi-purpose but at the same time exquisite and elegant.

0:13:42 > 0:13:48Taking on this project is 30-year-old coffee shop owner Jordan.

0:13:48 > 0:13:52Jordan's first design demonstrated a talent for restrained elegance,

0:13:52 > 0:13:56blending furniture into his controlled grey scheme.

0:13:56 > 0:13:59His second project showed he was unafraid of bold colours

0:13:59 > 0:14:02and liked to make a design statement.

0:14:02 > 0:14:05Now he must prove he knows how to strike a balance.

0:14:05 > 0:14:08There's going to be a window seat with loads of storage in,

0:14:08 > 0:14:11which we're going to wrap round into a media unit here which is

0:14:11 > 0:14:13full height with some lighting.

0:14:13 > 0:14:16I wanted to use a bare wood so it added some warmth to the room,

0:14:16 > 0:14:19but then I'm going to be introducing colour in that a lot as well,

0:14:19 > 0:14:21and geometric shapes.

0:14:21 > 0:14:23We've got the colour scheme here,

0:14:23 > 0:14:25the lovely pale mint which is going to be on the ceiling

0:14:25 > 0:14:28and down to the picture rail, and then I'm picking

0:14:28 > 0:14:32out the fireplace in this gorgeous colour here, which I really love.

0:14:32 > 0:14:35It's such a beautiful shape and I think with a nice chalky

0:14:35 > 0:14:38paint on it, it's going to look phenomenal.

0:14:38 > 0:14:41Jordan aims to use a contemporary colour scheme with a geometric

0:14:41 > 0:14:45pattern across his window seat, radiator cover, and furnishings.

0:14:45 > 0:14:47But he's also got unique plans

0:14:47 > 0:14:50to make this family room scheme cutting edge.

0:14:50 > 0:14:52What's this piece?

0:14:52 > 0:14:56This is a sample version of a wallpaper I'm going to be using.

0:14:56 > 0:15:00- And, full size...- Whoa! - ..it looks like this.

0:15:00 > 0:15:02Hmm.

0:15:02 > 0:15:03- Shocking?- Shocking.

0:15:03 > 0:15:05How do you feel about that?

0:15:05 > 0:15:07- I quite like it. - THEY LAUGH

0:15:07 > 0:15:09It's incredible,

0:15:09 > 0:15:11and that's going to be a huge feature on this wall behind us.

0:15:11 > 0:15:12- Just this one?- Yeah.

0:15:12 > 0:15:14Is it Alfie-proof?

0:15:14 > 0:15:18It's really tough, so hopefully that's going to look amazing.

0:15:18 > 0:15:22It's Jordan showing us that he's at the cutting edge of design,

0:15:22 > 0:15:23he's pushing the boundaries.

0:15:23 > 0:15:26The colours, for me, I'm not sure, it felt a bit '80s, that yellow

0:15:26 > 0:15:30and sort of turquoise colour was, to me... I don't know.

0:15:34 > 0:15:39So, we've got loads of stuff for you to be building, I'm afraid.

0:15:39 > 0:15:42We've got the big media unit here which is going to house a little

0:15:42 > 0:15:47lamp, then the piece de resistance is this monster of a window seat.

0:15:47 > 0:15:48So not too much, then!

0:15:49 > 0:15:51- JORDAN LAUGHS - No(!)

0:15:53 > 0:15:56In our fourth property live Tracy and her young family.

0:15:58 > 0:16:02Their front room is a dining room that's only been used a few times.

0:16:02 > 0:16:05Tracy would like a colourful room for entertaining that

0:16:05 > 0:16:07celebrates the Victorian features.

0:16:07 > 0:16:11It's a lovely room, I think the stained glass is beautiful,

0:16:11 > 0:16:14but it's purely down to the decor, I just don't like being in here.

0:16:14 > 0:16:17It feels lifeless to me at the moment,

0:16:17 > 0:16:19I don't feel it's a very inviting room.

0:16:20 > 0:16:24The room is in fact classically late Victorian.

0:16:24 > 0:16:28I'm just looking at the fireplace. Super, isn't it?

0:16:28 > 0:16:31I'm also thrilled to see we have the original skirting,

0:16:31 > 0:16:33picture rail and cornice in the room.

0:16:33 > 0:16:37One idea would be, if you don't want it to look overly decorative,

0:16:37 > 0:16:39you could just paint the whole lot out in one colour,

0:16:39 > 0:16:42just tonally, but don't get rid of it, that's what we're saying.

0:16:42 > 0:16:44Exactly. It was classical reference.

0:16:44 > 0:16:46Imagine this wall is like a column

0:16:46 > 0:16:49and the skirting is the base of the column.

0:16:49 > 0:16:51The column would reach up to the picture rail,

0:16:51 > 0:16:55followed by the cornice which introduces you to the ceiling.

0:16:55 > 0:16:58And there was a reason why you had chandeliers hanging here,

0:16:58 > 0:17:01and that's because it represented the stars.

0:17:03 > 0:17:06Planning to bring colour and flair to this room

0:17:06 > 0:17:10is 65-year-old housewife Susan, from Kent.

0:17:10 > 0:17:13Previously, Susan has impressed by delivering two very different

0:17:13 > 0:17:18styles, showcasing her paint effect skills and artistic ability.

0:17:18 > 0:17:20Now she must keep up the momentum

0:17:20 > 0:17:24and show what other looks she's capable of.

0:17:24 > 0:17:27My design evolved round the floral wallpaper, really,

0:17:27 > 0:17:28that's how I started.

0:17:28 > 0:17:32So I thought I'd try and make your room into a garden, so I have

0:17:32 > 0:17:37- given you panels of wallpaper which would represent flowerbeds.- OK.

0:17:37 > 0:17:39This is my design solution to your windows.

0:17:39 > 0:17:42I'm having Victorian shutters made for your windows.

0:17:42 > 0:17:44Yes! I love the colours, it's definitely me.

0:17:44 > 0:17:47I quite like the idea of the panelling with the wallpaper.

0:17:47 > 0:17:49- Yeah, yeah, yeah. - That's a great idea, I think.

0:17:49 > 0:17:52I've bought you a garden bench, a wrought iron garden bench,

0:17:52 > 0:17:55because I presume you don't have any extra seating in this room?

0:17:55 > 0:17:57No, we don't. Different. I'll go with it.

0:17:57 > 0:17:59This is all bang on trend, garden furniture, so...

0:17:59 > 0:18:01- In the house?- In the house.

0:18:01 > 0:18:03SHE LAUGHS OK!

0:18:03 > 0:18:05To enhance the floral wallpaper panels,

0:18:05 > 0:18:09Susan's planning her signature brightly painted furniture,

0:18:09 > 0:18:12and she wants to tackle the room's main original feature.

0:18:12 > 0:18:16Right, you don't like your fireplace. You said it's too dark.

0:18:16 > 0:18:17No, it's just too dark.

0:18:17 > 0:18:21Right, I mean... You can go wacky but I'd quite like to sand it down

0:18:21 > 0:18:25and put a light white colouring over it

0:18:25 > 0:18:28and gradually bring some colour to it so it's still white at the top.

0:18:30 > 0:18:32OK, I like the idea of it being lighter,

0:18:32 > 0:18:35I'm just not sure about the colour,

0:18:35 > 0:18:38- but we'll go with it and see what it looks like.- OK, then. OK.- OK.

0:18:38 > 0:18:40I like the idea of the garden room theme, I think

0:18:40 > 0:18:43it works really well with Tracy's love of bright colours

0:18:43 > 0:18:46and florals, and it's making some sense of that and pushing it

0:18:46 > 0:18:49a bit further on rather than just, hey, this is just a floral room.

0:18:49 > 0:18:52It's coming up with a cohesive scheme. I thought that was great.

0:18:52 > 0:18:57I've got to represent every single proud Victorian family

0:18:57 > 0:19:01who will be all turning in their graves right now if they heard

0:19:01 > 0:19:06Susan say, "That original mahogany fireplace, I'm going to paint it."

0:19:11 > 0:19:15Sure enough, as Susan starts to clear the room, doubts creep in.

0:19:15 > 0:19:18Now I'm concerned about this fireplace.

0:19:18 > 0:19:21I feel as though I'm destroying something. I don't know.

0:19:25 > 0:19:29- SUSAN SIGHS - If we painted it and sanded it down, you may regret it afterwards.

0:19:29 > 0:19:31I just think it's so highly polished.

0:19:31 > 0:19:33You'd have to strip it back properly

0:19:33 > 0:19:35- and it will take a long time to do it.- OK, not a problem.

0:19:35 > 0:19:37OK, then. Right.

0:19:37 > 0:19:41Susan's respect for craftsmanship echoes the beliefs that

0:19:41 > 0:19:44led to the arts and crafts movement.

0:19:44 > 0:19:46One of the leading inspirations behind the arts

0:19:46 > 0:19:49and crafts movement was the poet, socialist

0:19:49 > 0:19:53and art critic, John Ruskin, who famously said the way society makes

0:19:53 > 0:19:57its architecture tells us everything we need to know about the society.

0:20:00 > 0:20:03Unlike flat-fronted and regular Georgian architecture,

0:20:03 > 0:20:06arts and crafts style revelled in multi-faceted facades

0:20:06 > 0:20:10and higgledy-piggledy roofs, like on the house behind me.

0:20:10 > 0:20:13Ruskin hoped that design, including architecture, would truly

0:20:13 > 0:20:16reflect this golden age of Victorian society.

0:20:16 > 0:20:19It may have been romantic, even idealistic,

0:20:19 > 0:20:22but Ruskin went on to inspire a whole generation of writers,

0:20:22 > 0:20:24artists, designers and architects.

0:20:30 > 0:20:34Quality craftsmanship is something all our designers are striving for.

0:20:34 > 0:20:37The first coat has gone on the ceiling, it's great.

0:20:37 > 0:20:40To compliment the willow green paint in her Eastern scheme,

0:20:40 > 0:20:43Sarah is introducing the colour elsewhere.

0:20:43 > 0:20:46Obviously there isn't enough green in the room, so I'm going to dye

0:20:46 > 0:20:51the napkins green as well, but these are just a cotton mix napkin.

0:20:51 > 0:20:56Because I'm working to a budget for the room, it is really much

0:20:56 > 0:20:59cheaper to buy a three quid sachet of dye

0:20:59 > 0:21:03and dye plain, simple napkins into the colour you want than it is

0:21:03 > 0:21:07to buy napkins probably £5 each. So it's a really quick-fix solution.

0:21:07 > 0:21:10Sarah's saving money where she can

0:21:10 > 0:21:13so she can afford an innovative £400 carpet.

0:21:13 > 0:21:15What do you reckon to the carpet?

0:21:15 > 0:21:19It's awful green, isn't it? Awfully green, not "awful green".

0:21:20 > 0:21:23The word "Astroturf" springs to mind.

0:21:24 > 0:21:28But it's green in more ways than one.

0:21:28 > 0:21:31I love the feeling of the carpet, it's actually made out of corn

0:21:31 > 0:21:33and recycled bottle tops.

0:21:33 > 0:21:37Oh, wow! Actually, on that basis, it'll be extremely practical.

0:21:37 > 0:21:39I've seen some carpets come out like this now.

0:21:39 > 0:21:42Bizarrely, they're relatively inexpensive but extremely durable.

0:21:42 > 0:21:45But at the same time, they've got this lovely,

0:21:45 > 0:21:47almost silky effect on them.

0:21:47 > 0:21:51It's going to actually be rather in period, because the Victorians

0:21:51 > 0:21:54would have had a collection of items, especially from China.

0:21:54 > 0:21:57As we said, chinoiserie was very fashionable at that time.

0:21:57 > 0:22:00And we're sort of bringing it back a little bit,

0:22:00 > 0:22:03but just hoping you've got a bit of a new take on it too.

0:22:03 > 0:22:05- Yes, so am I. - THEY LAUGH

0:22:05 > 0:22:08She's doing it all correctly,

0:22:08 > 0:22:11but, you know, we've always said we're wanting a little bit of

0:22:11 > 0:22:14left-field thinking, a bit of rock and roll, something a bit edgy.

0:22:14 > 0:22:17"I know the rules, I know I can break the rules,"

0:22:17 > 0:22:19and that's what I want to see her do.

0:22:21 > 0:22:23It's whiter, is it not?

0:22:23 > 0:22:25To bring a modern look to this music room,

0:22:25 > 0:22:29Luke is painting over the red with a first of four coats,

0:22:29 > 0:22:32and is turning his attention to the lighting.

0:22:32 > 0:22:35That one needs to just come down a touch.

0:22:35 > 0:22:37- Yeah, I'll level it up.- Yeah.

0:22:37 > 0:22:39- Can you move it up just a little bit?- Up?

0:22:39 > 0:22:41Just a tiny bit. Sorry to be a real pain.

0:22:44 > 0:22:48This light, it's a very expensive designer fitting.

0:22:48 > 0:22:51It should work out at £1,100, so I've spent the money on the actual

0:22:51 > 0:22:56fitting and then I've used other cheaper lampshades that fit

0:22:56 > 0:22:59just as well and give a beautiful effect.

0:22:59 > 0:23:01The fitting cost £240,

0:23:01 > 0:23:06but he's cleverly sourced paper shades for just £12 each.

0:23:06 > 0:23:08I'm really pleased with how that looks.

0:23:12 > 0:23:16A few doors down in his cutting edge family room, Jordan's working

0:23:16 > 0:23:20with colour on the walls, ceilings and bespoke accessories.

0:23:20 > 0:23:23- Have you made this yourself?- Yes.

0:23:23 > 0:23:27It's quite incredible. So, it's a collection of action

0:23:27 > 0:23:32figures on an ordinary lamp base under there somewhere.

0:23:32 > 0:23:33Yeah, lots of charity shop toys.

0:23:33 > 0:23:36Glued them all together, spray can,

0:23:36 > 0:23:40and you've got a real designer piece. I'm very impressed.

0:23:41 > 0:23:44It's around eight o'clock in the evening

0:23:44 > 0:23:48and all the designers are still painting out the old colour scheme.

0:23:48 > 0:23:50Some are feeling confident.

0:23:50 > 0:23:53Today has been a good day, and it's been the most successful

0:23:53 > 0:23:56first day I've had in this competition.

0:23:56 > 0:23:58But not all.

0:23:58 > 0:24:04The ceiling hasn't been finished, painted yet, so I'm not too happy.

0:24:04 > 0:24:06I just worry that it's just going to be dull.

0:24:06 > 0:24:09But there's definitely room for improvement within the design.

0:24:09 > 0:24:12I've got a very safe, blank colour of curtain,

0:24:12 > 0:24:16bright green going up on the wall. I don't know if they're going to work.

0:24:16 > 0:24:18It's definitely going to need something,

0:24:18 > 0:24:20so I'm going to take a really hard think tonight

0:24:20 > 0:24:23and see what extra I can bring to this scheme.

0:24:25 > 0:24:28Sarah may be having doubts, but Jordan's been let down.

0:24:28 > 0:24:32My seamstress pulled out, which has dropped a bit of a bombshell

0:24:32 > 0:24:36because we got a really good price to do all of my upholstery,

0:24:36 > 0:24:39curtains, cushions, so it's a little bit stressful.

0:24:40 > 0:24:43Jordan's managed to find a new seamstress,

0:24:43 > 0:24:47but they're quoting £100 more than he'd allocated.

0:24:47 > 0:24:51I wondered if you might be able to break down what the costs of stuff is

0:24:51 > 0:24:52so I can either try and...

0:24:52 > 0:24:55You can? What can I cut?

0:24:55 > 0:24:58I can't really cut anything. HE LAUGHS

0:24:58 > 0:25:00Erm... Oh, dear.

0:25:00 > 0:25:05And there's no way you can come down any on the price at all for us?

0:25:05 > 0:25:07You'll do it for £400?

0:25:07 > 0:25:11Oh, listen, thank you so, so much. Honestly, you've saved my life.

0:25:11 > 0:25:14I thought I was going to have a sleepless night tonight.

0:25:14 > 0:25:16A bit of human kindness there, isn't there?

0:25:16 > 0:25:19I think that's, you know, at the end of the day, a bit of charming.

0:25:19 > 0:25:22Jordan has negotiated well, but the delay means he'll have to wait

0:25:22 > 0:25:27until the last day for delivery, leaving no margin for error.

0:25:35 > 0:25:38After a fraught first day with Jordan's curtains

0:25:38 > 0:25:41hanging in the balance and Luke and Susan frantically painting,

0:25:41 > 0:25:45day two is when they have to really take control of their designs.

0:25:46 > 0:25:50Overnight, Sarah's decided to make a radical change

0:25:50 > 0:25:52to give her Eastern scheme an edge.

0:25:52 > 0:25:56My builder's got this fantastic edge glaze Perspex

0:25:56 > 0:25:59to pop the wallpaper up, and these things are looking like

0:25:59 > 0:26:01they need to be included, these colours.

0:26:01 > 0:26:04It needs some zing in here, and I think drop those

0:26:04 > 0:26:08colours into the chandelier and the lighting and really just go for it.

0:26:10 > 0:26:13Meanwhile, Jordan's going subtle with his colours.

0:26:13 > 0:26:16I love plywood. It's a relatively cheap material,

0:26:16 > 0:26:20but with some good joinery and introducing a bit of colour to it,

0:26:20 > 0:26:22I think it's really interesting.

0:26:22 > 0:26:24Something unexpected, a bit different.

0:26:24 > 0:26:29All the plywood is costing a hefty £215.

0:26:29 > 0:26:33He's painting a geometric pattern in emulsion on the radiator cover

0:26:33 > 0:26:35that will be repeated across the room.

0:26:35 > 0:26:39I'm putting a really thin coat on and then sponging it off

0:26:39 > 0:26:43because I really want to see a lot of the wood grain from underneath.

0:26:43 > 0:26:47I mean, the key to it, really, is to keep it as dry as possible,

0:26:47 > 0:26:51particularly with the plywood, because I don't want any bleed

0:26:51 > 0:26:57around the edges. And the proof will be when I remove the tape.

0:26:57 > 0:26:58Wonderful.

0:27:01 > 0:27:02Oh, yes.

0:27:02 > 0:27:04Ta-da!

0:27:04 > 0:27:06Yeah, I'm so pleased with that.

0:27:13 > 0:27:15In her garden-themed dining room,

0:27:15 > 0:27:18Susan's window shutters are being made from MDF.

0:27:19 > 0:27:22A short-term substitute for proper hardwood,

0:27:22 > 0:27:25but one that's within her budget...

0:27:25 > 0:27:28I chose this piece of furniture because I just like the shape of it.

0:27:28 > 0:27:31..while she does some upcycling.

0:27:31 > 0:27:35I can see you're slapping on some normal emulsion paint,

0:27:35 > 0:27:37- so quite affordable paint. - Very affordable.

0:27:37 > 0:27:40And then how are you going to get this graduated look?

0:27:40 > 0:27:43I'm mixing the paint with what's called a scumble.

0:27:43 > 0:27:46It basically stops the paint from drying out.

0:27:46 > 0:27:48Scumble is an opaque glaze

0:27:48 > 0:27:51which allows the paint below to shine through.

0:27:51 > 0:27:55Using it in different thicknesses graduates the colour

0:27:55 > 0:27:56as it goes up the table legs.

0:27:56 > 0:28:00And you're just adding more and more as you work the paint up the leg?

0:28:00 > 0:28:01Yes, more and more scumble.

0:28:01 > 0:28:03And as long as you put a good quality

0:28:03 > 0:28:08varnish on the top of it - I usually use a mixed matte with satin -

0:28:08 > 0:28:11it lasts for years and years and years. It's quite durable.

0:28:20 > 0:28:23That is the difference between this room being dull,

0:28:23 > 0:28:25boring hotel suite

0:28:25 > 0:28:28into fantastic dining room.

0:28:28 > 0:28:32And that is a brilliant colour. That is going to just sing.

0:28:34 > 0:28:37First up for the highlight treatment is the chandelier.

0:28:37 > 0:28:40In Chinese culture, I think yellow means "beautiful"

0:28:40 > 0:28:43and, oddly, I think it means "the centre of things",

0:28:43 > 0:28:48which works out really well for our central hanging light.

0:28:48 > 0:28:51Two lamps bought online for £25

0:28:51 > 0:28:53are also getting the florescent treatment.

0:28:56 > 0:28:59As is the modern fireplace surround.

0:28:59 > 0:29:02So this is the biggest chunk of yellow that's going in there.

0:29:02 > 0:29:04I think I'm going to put a light coat on

0:29:04 > 0:29:09and I'm going to get it against the wall to see how it's looking.

0:29:09 > 0:29:13It's a fine line between doing something that is interesting

0:29:13 > 0:29:17and adding colour to the room and looking like you're desperate.

0:29:17 > 0:29:24Um, so, I hope I'm not giving off the desperate aura.

0:29:24 > 0:29:27It's certainly better than putty, though, isn't it?

0:29:27 > 0:29:31I feel that Sarah is really out to impress us and show us that

0:29:31 > 0:29:35she can be versatile, she can be contemporary and edgy and move

0:29:35 > 0:29:39away from this vintage look that we know she's got nailed very well.

0:29:39 > 0:29:44But...that fluoro-yellow, are her clients really going to dig it?

0:29:44 > 0:29:48Well, you know, we talk about pushing the parameters for a client.

0:29:48 > 0:29:50She's actually pushing her own parameters

0:29:50 > 0:29:53and I think we should allow her to experiment.

0:29:56 > 0:30:0024 hours after he started re-painting his music room,

0:30:00 > 0:30:02Luke's nearly finished redecorating.

0:30:04 > 0:30:07My builder's done a magnificent job on getting the fireplace

0:30:07 > 0:30:11wallpapered, which looks amazing, really happy with that.

0:30:11 > 0:30:14So we're on schedule, um...

0:30:14 > 0:30:17I'm feeling good at the moment.

0:30:17 > 0:30:20Bringing a modern touch to the room will be Luke's design

0:30:20 > 0:30:23for illuminated floating shelves.

0:30:23 > 0:30:26These are my LED lights that are going to act as

0:30:26 > 0:30:29the illumination around the floating wall

0:30:29 > 0:30:33and floating shelving that we've got on either side of the fireplace.

0:30:33 > 0:30:38Lighting large shelves such as these will take a lot of LEDs,

0:30:38 > 0:30:43but Luke's managed to buy 13 packs for just £11 each.

0:30:43 > 0:30:46So hopefully we'll get this one completed sooner rather than later,

0:30:46 > 0:30:49drop onto the other one later in the day,

0:30:49 > 0:30:51get both complete by the end of the day,

0:30:51 > 0:30:55which means that tomorrow there'll just be the CD storage to complete.

0:31:03 > 0:31:06Operating on budget without compromising quality

0:31:06 > 0:31:08is a challenge all designers face,

0:31:08 > 0:31:11and one that eventually contributed to the decline

0:31:11 > 0:31:14of the arts and crafts movement.

0:31:14 > 0:31:17By the time these houses were built in the 1890s, the arts and crafts

0:31:17 > 0:31:19had been the height of fashion for 15 years.

0:31:19 > 0:31:21Already Ruskin had condemned the suburbs

0:31:21 > 0:31:25built in his name as "Frankenstein's monsters of my own making."

0:31:25 > 0:31:28The original principles of the movement had been lost,

0:31:28 > 0:31:31so what you see here is a very loose interpretation

0:31:31 > 0:31:32of those design principles.

0:31:36 > 0:31:39But there are key design details from the arts and crafts here,

0:31:39 > 0:31:41like the heavy gable end,

0:31:41 > 0:31:43the overhanging eaves, and those exposed beams.

0:31:43 > 0:31:45In fact, showing off the craft of construction

0:31:45 > 0:31:48is a hallmark of arts and crafts style.

0:31:48 > 0:31:49As are terracotta tiles.

0:31:49 > 0:31:52There are no local building stones in Birmingham

0:31:52 > 0:31:55so terracotta's perfect, and it throws off the grime and the soot.

0:31:58 > 0:32:01By the 1890s, the snob value of doors was being realised,

0:32:01 > 0:32:04so builders would cover them with ornate porches

0:32:04 > 0:32:08and more stained glass and following encouragement from the Post Office

0:32:08 > 0:32:11by the middle of the century, a new-fangled invention -

0:32:11 > 0:32:13the letter box.

0:32:18 > 0:32:19More than a century later,

0:32:19 > 0:32:22and one of our designers is also adopting a new-fangled idea.

0:32:22 > 0:32:27This morning my wallpaper has arrived for the origami wall

0:32:27 > 0:32:29just behind you there.

0:32:30 > 0:32:33This hand-folded product is not yet on the market.

0:32:33 > 0:32:35It's at a prototype stage,

0:32:35 > 0:32:38and Jordan has negotiated an experimental installation

0:32:38 > 0:32:41for a reduced price of £100.

0:32:41 > 0:32:45My initial concern was that it's so beautiful and splendid,

0:32:45 > 0:32:47is it really a practical choice for a family room?

0:32:47 > 0:32:50I really think it is, it's a non-woven paper

0:32:50 > 0:32:54so it's really durable, it doesn't tear, it's really hard-wearing,

0:32:54 > 0:32:56you can sort of hoover it, dust it.

0:32:56 > 0:32:58It's done in such small sections

0:32:58 > 0:33:01that it'd be reasonably easy to replace a section.

0:33:02 > 0:33:07Jordan may be a fan, but it divided his clients and may be a risky move.

0:33:09 > 0:33:12You don't put your hands on the shelf, put your hands

0:33:12 > 0:33:16on the sides of the unit, because bending the shelves is not helping.

0:33:18 > 0:33:19In his music room,

0:33:19 > 0:33:22Luke is struggling to get his floating shelves off the ground.

0:33:22 > 0:33:25- LUKE GROWLS - You OK?- Yeah.

0:33:25 > 0:33:27Sorry. Going to get heavy!

0:33:28 > 0:33:33We've got distinctly more lip on this right side than the left.

0:33:33 > 0:33:37Made from MDF, they're big and bulky to install,

0:33:37 > 0:33:39and wiring in the LED lights is complicated.

0:33:41 > 0:33:44Floating wall sections are burning up a lot of time,

0:33:44 > 0:33:49so it's a question of how to make sure everything does happen still,

0:33:49 > 0:33:51but in the least stressful way.

0:33:54 > 0:33:56- Move it round?- Leave it there. - Is that OK?

0:33:56 > 0:33:58Across the road,

0:33:58 > 0:34:02Susan's big statement is the floral wallpaper for her garden theme.

0:34:02 > 0:34:04Is there an easy way of doing this? This is so big.

0:34:06 > 0:34:10- Just got to find it, I think.- It's there, it's that one onto that one.

0:34:10 > 0:34:12That's it, there it is, that's it there.

0:34:12 > 0:34:15OK, fold it and I'll come round.

0:34:15 > 0:34:17I knew I didn't want to wallpaper the whole room

0:34:17 > 0:34:21because number one, budget, expense, very expensive wallpaper.

0:34:21 > 0:34:25And number two, I thought it'd be too much.

0:34:25 > 0:34:27The paper cost £60 per roll,

0:34:27 > 0:34:31so Susan's plan of using it sparingly is paying off.

0:34:31 > 0:34:33Is that the right way up?

0:34:33 > 0:34:36Yes, grows up, doesn't it?

0:34:36 > 0:34:38Oh, I like that.

0:34:38 > 0:34:41I think that's good, goes with the green.

0:34:41 > 0:34:46This will be the best room in her house, without a shadow of a doubt.

0:34:51 > 0:34:54With a coveted place in the final at stake,

0:34:54 > 0:34:57all the designers need to work hard.

0:34:57 > 0:34:59And they're in good company because this part of Birmingham

0:34:59 > 0:35:04is historically associated with some of the city's most successful names.

0:35:04 > 0:35:08The suburb of Moseley, situated right at the top of a hill,

0:35:08 > 0:35:10away from all the factory gloom and grime,

0:35:10 > 0:35:13became synonymous with the rich and powerful,

0:35:13 > 0:35:15including James Taylor, founder of Lloyds Bank,

0:35:15 > 0:35:17chocolate magnate Richard Cadbury,

0:35:17 > 0:35:21and Victorian politician, and mayor of Birmingham, Joseph Chamberlain.

0:35:24 > 0:35:25Between the 1870s and 90s,

0:35:25 > 0:35:29Moseley's population had increased six-fold.

0:35:29 > 0:35:32The area was transformed by a new breed of rich clientele

0:35:32 > 0:35:34looking for their own private castle.

0:35:36 > 0:35:38Multiple developers snapped up plots,

0:35:38 > 0:35:40wringing every inch of profit from the land.

0:35:40 > 0:35:43By the time this developer got to his plot,

0:35:43 > 0:35:46number 37 had been built and number 43.

0:35:46 > 0:35:49But he managed to squeeze in three houses nonetheless,

0:35:49 > 0:35:52calling them number 39, 41 and 41a.

0:35:55 > 0:35:58Our designers also need to be wringing every ounce of potential

0:35:58 > 0:36:01from their projects if they're to stand a chance

0:36:01 > 0:36:03of making it into the final.

0:36:03 > 0:36:06In the music room, one of Luke's illuminated shelves

0:36:06 > 0:36:09is on the wall, but the other has yet to be built.

0:36:10 > 0:36:13Probably it has taken longer than expected,

0:36:13 > 0:36:15but then don't all great things?

0:36:15 > 0:36:19And there's little progress on his CD storage hoop.

0:36:19 > 0:36:23The larger elements that are being made in my room

0:36:23 > 0:36:25are taking longer than anticipated,

0:36:25 > 0:36:29so obviously time is ticking down

0:36:29 > 0:36:31and I've got quite a lot to do still.

0:36:31 > 0:36:34So panicking's not going to achieve anything,

0:36:34 > 0:36:36I've just got to keep going.

0:36:36 > 0:36:39I can see he's put a lot of thought into his room

0:36:39 > 0:36:41but project management, getting it done on time,

0:36:41 > 0:36:42we're yet to see, aren't we?

0:36:42 > 0:36:45I feel Luke is quite a long way behind at the moment.

0:36:45 > 0:36:48There is a lot to do, he's only got one shelving unit up.

0:36:48 > 0:36:50How is he going to get this room finished?

0:36:52 > 0:36:54In his cutting-edge family room,

0:36:54 > 0:36:57Jordan's painted the fireplace a muted blue.

0:36:57 > 0:36:59Not bad.

0:36:59 > 0:37:01Gone yellow on one wall,

0:37:01 > 0:37:04and his origami wallpaper is nearly finished,

0:37:04 > 0:37:07but he has more innovative ideas.

0:37:07 > 0:37:09So this is the magnetic paint.

0:37:09 > 0:37:13You paint on a couple of layers of it and then any normal emulsion

0:37:13 > 0:37:16over the top, so it's invisible to the eye but obviously it's magnetic.

0:37:16 > 0:37:20The paint contains tiny metal fibres which will react with magnets.

0:37:20 > 0:37:23So the wall will provide two-and-a-half-year-old Alfie

0:37:23 > 0:37:26with a changeable gallery for his paintings.

0:37:26 > 0:37:28There they are, yeah.

0:37:28 > 0:37:29I've got some magnets here,

0:37:29 > 0:37:33I'm just going to chuck them at the wall and see if it works.

0:37:33 > 0:37:34Oh, yeah.

0:37:34 > 0:37:36- It works!- That's amazing!

0:37:36 > 0:37:39Maybe every wall should be magnetic in a house

0:37:39 > 0:37:40because then it saves so much nailing up,

0:37:40 > 0:37:42- doesn't it?- Yeah, it's true.

0:37:42 > 0:37:45You're playing with these sort of green-blues and blues

0:37:45 > 0:37:50and all that, but putting in that sort of wow yellow,

0:37:50 > 0:37:52that's all I can call it, it's semi-fluorescent.

0:37:52 > 0:37:55It fascinates me because I'd never dare do that myself.

0:37:55 > 0:37:57Yeah, it's a play room at the end of the day

0:37:57 > 0:37:59so it's not too serious.

0:37:59 > 0:38:02Love the turquoise fireplace, love the yellow wall

0:38:02 > 0:38:07but do those parts make a great sum? I'm not sure of that.

0:38:07 > 0:38:10I'm not convinced by that scheme if I was really honest.

0:38:15 > 0:38:18I'm just trying to make a sleeve for the light, but hopefully

0:38:18 > 0:38:22that's a pretty simple solution to cover it in the beautiful fabric.

0:38:24 > 0:38:26The lamps match the chinoisery wallpaper,

0:38:26 > 0:38:30but her yellow fire surround certainly stands out.

0:38:30 > 0:38:32I just wonder if it's too mad and bold,

0:38:32 > 0:38:35or if it's actually really going to work.

0:38:35 > 0:38:38This works really well here, so there's no problem there.

0:38:38 > 0:38:39I like that.

0:38:39 > 0:38:41Is that too much? I don't know.

0:38:41 > 0:38:42What do you think?

0:38:43 > 0:38:44It's very bright.

0:38:44 > 0:38:47I'm a bit lost now as which direction to go in.

0:38:52 > 0:38:55It's the end of day two, and with only two places in the final,

0:38:55 > 0:38:57nerves are kicking in.

0:38:57 > 0:39:01What happens if we come in the morning and it's horrendous?

0:39:01 > 0:39:04It's getting very late, so I think what I want to do

0:39:04 > 0:39:07is just finish painting the legs and then call it a day.

0:39:10 > 0:39:14It's 9:30 at night, and all the designers have gone home,

0:39:14 > 0:39:15except Luke.

0:39:15 > 0:39:19There we go. It's beginning to get a little bit tight, obviously,

0:39:19 > 0:39:21because of the time and stuff.

0:39:21 > 0:39:24We'll be OK. We'll be fine, I'm sure.

0:39:34 > 0:39:36It's the last day for our amateur designers.

0:39:36 > 0:39:38With a place in the final at stake,

0:39:38 > 0:39:42it's an early start for everyone. They've only got a few hours left

0:39:42 > 0:39:46to get their rooms dressed and ready for judges Dan and Sophie.

0:39:49 > 0:39:54I'm feeling under pressure this morning.

0:39:54 > 0:39:56There's still an awful lot to do.

0:39:57 > 0:40:00Luke is fixing retort clamps to the wall -

0:40:00 > 0:40:03more often used to hold test tubes in science labs.

0:40:03 > 0:40:06Here they'll display musical instruments.

0:40:06 > 0:40:08That looks good to me.

0:40:08 > 0:40:11But there's no time left to make the CD unit.

0:40:11 > 0:40:13Time is going to beat me.

0:40:13 > 0:40:19Which is a shame because obviously it's going to get picked up on,

0:40:19 > 0:40:22but there's little to nothing I can do about that.

0:40:22 > 0:40:27So I'd rather have the room complete with the display. The CD wall can...

0:40:29 > 0:40:32Whatever, it's done.

0:40:35 > 0:40:39A few doors away, and Sarah's also feeling the pressure.

0:40:42 > 0:40:45She's decided there's too much bold yellow in her scheme.

0:40:45 > 0:40:48Yeah, I think sometimes you need a bit of adrenaline

0:40:48 > 0:40:51and excitement to really focus you on what you need to get done.

0:40:51 > 0:40:54In her garden room,

0:40:54 > 0:40:57Susan's still having trouble with her wallpaper pattern.

0:40:57 > 0:41:00I've cut out pieces of wallpaper to go in my drawers,

0:41:00 > 0:41:04they were all taken out and put on the table and I don't know

0:41:04 > 0:41:07if they've all been thrown or what the bits are,

0:41:07 > 0:41:08whether I've got the right bits.

0:41:08 > 0:41:11I don't think it is. Oh yes, it is!

0:41:11 > 0:41:14Nope. Nope, I've not got the right bit.

0:41:14 > 0:41:19I've got to start again. Oh, God! I'm not going to make it.

0:41:22 > 0:41:25Across the road, Jordan's had a delivery.

0:41:26 > 0:41:29Success! Absolutely phenomenal.

0:41:35 > 0:41:40Our designers have had three days and £1,500 to make these

0:41:40 > 0:41:43Victorian front rooms fit for their clients' briefs.

0:41:46 > 0:41:50Now it will be up to Sophie and Daniel to choose which two

0:41:50 > 0:41:53amateur designers have done enough to make it through to the final.

0:41:55 > 0:41:57It's sort of crunch time, the stakes are so high now.

0:41:57 > 0:41:59I really, really want to be there in the final.

0:42:01 > 0:42:02Get it on, get it on, get it on.

0:42:02 > 0:42:04I think some things are just not meant to be.

0:42:04 > 0:42:06I think these lampshades,

0:42:06 > 0:42:09the bases are just looking worse and worse whatever we do with them.

0:42:13 > 0:42:15That's it.

0:42:26 > 0:42:28First to face the judges' scrutiny is Sarah.

0:42:30 > 0:42:34She designed a traditional dining room with Eastern influences.

0:42:36 > 0:42:39Three days ago, the room was a little outdated

0:42:39 > 0:42:41with a very plain colour scheme.

0:42:51 > 0:42:54Now Sarah's transformed it into an elegant room,

0:42:54 > 0:42:58with vintage table setting, and hand-dyed napkins.

0:42:58 > 0:43:02The antiques and furniture sit among tranquil shades of green

0:43:02 > 0:43:07found on the walls, ceiling, curtains, carpet and lampshades.

0:43:09 > 0:43:13But to prove she can be risky, Sarah's added a hit of bright yellow

0:43:13 > 0:43:16to her modern fireplace and upcycled chandelier.

0:43:20 > 0:43:23- Oh, wow!- It's gorgeous!

0:43:23 > 0:43:25It's so elegant and luxurious.

0:43:25 > 0:43:29Although, I wasn't expecting to see that as I first walked in.

0:43:29 > 0:43:31It's a bit of a surprise, isn't it?

0:43:31 > 0:43:34I just feel like it's so distracting.

0:43:34 > 0:43:37There's so many beautiful, subtle things in this room

0:43:37 > 0:43:41and all I'm seeing is a bright yellow fireplace.

0:43:41 > 0:43:43I like it because it's radical.

0:43:43 > 0:43:45She's picked this very strong wallpaper.

0:43:45 > 0:43:48Which links in with the paint colour that's carried in over the ceiling.

0:43:48 > 0:43:51Then she's got the punchy yellow from the parrots.

0:43:51 > 0:43:54It's brought the whole room together and made it feel very cohesive.

0:43:54 > 0:43:58- Mismatching lampshades... - Oh, yes!- Great!

0:43:58 > 0:44:01The chandelier does look very fresh

0:44:01 > 0:44:04and just lifts what is a lot of green in this room.

0:44:04 > 0:44:07The question is, does that fireplace work here?

0:44:09 > 0:44:12How well they have fulfilled the client's brief is a key criterion

0:44:12 > 0:44:15on which the semifinalists will be judged.

0:44:16 > 0:44:19This will be the first time that Philip and Sue

0:44:19 > 0:44:21have seen their room since it was finished.

0:44:21 > 0:44:24- What a transformation!- Like, wow.

0:44:24 > 0:44:27She's brought our furniture to life.

0:44:27 > 0:44:30- So certainly the fireplace... - Stands out.

0:44:30 > 0:44:32Stands out, doesn't it?!

0:44:32 > 0:44:36A Victorian room in Chinese style

0:44:36 > 0:44:39maintaining the house's elegance,

0:44:39 > 0:44:42she has delivered the remit perfectly.

0:44:46 > 0:44:49Next is Luke's interpretation of a modern music room.

0:44:52 > 0:44:55Three days ago, the owners found their front room

0:44:55 > 0:44:59dark and uninviting, dominated by black shelves and red walls.

0:45:12 > 0:45:13Now, Luke has created

0:45:13 > 0:45:17a sophisticated space for enjoying music.

0:45:17 > 0:45:21He's brightened up the walls with an off-white tone,

0:45:21 > 0:45:26bespoke floating shelves illuminate antique pottery,

0:45:26 > 0:45:30while musical instruments appear suspended across the walls.

0:45:30 > 0:45:34The golden patterned chimney breast enhances the fireplace,

0:45:34 > 0:45:37and Luke's provided practical lighting

0:45:37 > 0:45:40along with a stylish designer pendant light.

0:45:40 > 0:45:42But working in his biggest room to date,

0:45:42 > 0:45:45Luke didn't manage to create his bespoke CD unit.

0:45:46 > 0:45:48I love it.

0:45:48 > 0:45:51It's a massive transformation, isn't it? This was dark and red

0:45:51 > 0:45:54and the walls were closing in on you.

0:45:54 > 0:45:56I'm enjoying how he's created

0:45:56 > 0:45:59this shelving unit to display the porcelain.

0:45:59 > 0:46:04Floating it off the walls subtly with those little lights in between.

0:46:04 > 0:46:05That's rather ingenious.

0:46:05 > 0:46:08What I really love about this display here is that lovely,

0:46:08 > 0:46:10rich, gold metallic wallpaper

0:46:10 > 0:46:13is picked out in the horns he's hung over the mantelpiece.

0:46:13 > 0:46:16Oh, but what's missing? The big CD hoop.

0:46:18 > 0:46:20And instead, those rather nasty CD holders

0:46:20 > 0:46:23have made their way back in. That's a shame.

0:46:23 > 0:46:26For me, as a cutting edge designer, Luke's the guy.

0:46:26 > 0:46:30He's thrown all the rules out of the book and I enjoy what he does.

0:46:30 > 0:46:33He does it with humour and with passion

0:46:33 > 0:46:35and I'm really impressed with him.

0:46:35 > 0:46:37But what are these cupboards at the bottom here?

0:46:37 > 0:46:39They're not looking great, I'm afraid.

0:46:39 > 0:46:42- Again, they're not finished, are they?- He's been running late.

0:46:42 > 0:46:44- It didn't go to plan, did it?- No.

0:46:47 > 0:46:49Oh, wow!

0:46:51 > 0:46:52Quite a change. Quite a change.

0:46:52 > 0:46:55I love what he's done with the instruments.

0:46:55 > 0:46:57I mean, that, we would have just not have thought of.

0:46:57 > 0:47:01- It's so imaginative. - That's so imaginative.

0:47:01 > 0:47:04- It just shows vision that we haven't got.- Precisely.

0:47:04 > 0:47:10We just like a clean space, bright and airy.

0:47:10 > 0:47:14That were the words on the brief and I think he's got it spot on.

0:47:14 > 0:47:16Yes, it's just a shame that

0:47:16 > 0:47:20he couldn't quite do the last bit that he wanted to do.

0:47:24 > 0:47:26Next up is Jordon.

0:47:26 > 0:47:29His aim was to design a family room with a contemporary colour scheme

0:47:29 > 0:47:32and geometric patterns.

0:47:32 > 0:47:35Three days ago, this front room was a terracotta coloured

0:47:35 > 0:47:37dumping ground for toys.

0:47:49 > 0:47:52Now Jordon has completely transformed the room, with

0:47:52 > 0:47:55powder blues, turquoise and acid yellow.

0:47:58 > 0:48:00He's provided practical plywood storage for toys

0:48:00 > 0:48:05that doubles up as seating. The radiator cover and shelf

0:48:05 > 0:48:08sit below a magnetic gallery for Alfie's art.

0:48:08 > 0:48:13And finally, Jordon's centrepiece - the cutting-edge origami wall.

0:48:13 > 0:48:14It's very playful, isn't it?

0:48:14 > 0:48:18It definitely says family room to me on my first impression.

0:48:18 > 0:48:20It's almost like he's deconstructed a play room

0:48:20 > 0:48:21and turned it into something else.

0:48:21 > 0:48:24I'm so glad he didn't go for the obvious nursery colours.

0:48:24 > 0:48:26The primary school colours.

0:48:26 > 0:48:29He's gone for actually what is a fairly sophisticated pastel scheme

0:48:29 > 0:48:32actually, which has just helped calm this whole space down a bit.

0:48:32 > 0:48:34There's no doubt, it's very fresh.

0:48:34 > 0:48:36The window seat's great fun

0:48:36 > 0:48:39and I like the idea of the drawers down in the bottom here.

0:48:39 > 0:48:41It's a very practical way of storing things.

0:48:41 > 0:48:43On castors so little Alfie can get in there

0:48:43 > 0:48:45and dig out the toys he wants to play with.

0:48:45 > 0:48:49I'm fascinated by his use of ply and the way he's played with it.

0:48:49 > 0:48:51Exposing the wood, keeping it very raw,

0:48:51 > 0:48:55stencilling over so you can still see the grain through it.

0:48:55 > 0:48:57But I'm just finding that this radiator cover

0:48:57 > 0:48:59is just one bit of ply too many.

0:48:59 > 0:49:02It's one step too far, isn't it? I agree with that.

0:49:02 > 0:49:03I just want to touch it.

0:49:03 > 0:49:07It does feel great. It's very tactile, yeah!

0:49:07 > 0:49:08Is the origami wall

0:49:08 > 0:49:10the most practical choice with a young family?

0:49:10 > 0:49:14Probably not, but at the same time I do feel, when you've got young kids

0:49:14 > 0:49:17you're still allowed to have a groovy home and have nice things.

0:49:20 > 0:49:22Blimey. Thank you.

0:49:25 > 0:49:26Quite a change.

0:49:26 > 0:49:29I wouldn't have thought I was in the same room, to be honest.

0:49:29 > 0:49:31It is such a transformation.

0:49:31 > 0:49:36He's a clever boy, isn't he? And the storage, the window seat.

0:49:36 > 0:49:38To be honest, it couldn't be any better.

0:49:38 > 0:49:41I was a little concerned about the...when I saw

0:49:41 > 0:49:43the original brief about the wallpaper.

0:49:43 > 0:49:47It's absolutely gorgeous, isn't it? I love it.

0:49:47 > 0:49:48I was keen on it to start with

0:49:48 > 0:49:51but I'm even more impressed now, seeing it up.

0:49:54 > 0:49:56Finally, it's Susan.

0:49:56 > 0:49:58She designed a vibrant,

0:49:58 > 0:50:01colourful dining room influenced by an English country garden.

0:50:03 > 0:50:05Just a few days ago, this unused dining table

0:50:05 > 0:50:08sat in the centre of a neglected room.

0:50:20 > 0:50:23Now, Susan has delivered a sunny, outdoorsy scheme

0:50:23 > 0:50:29with bright floral panels, backed on to soft green walls.

0:50:29 > 0:50:32She has shown how the stained glass windows

0:50:32 > 0:50:34can be complemented by folding shutters,

0:50:34 > 0:50:37and Susan's transformed second-hand furniture

0:50:37 > 0:50:39into a vibrant focal point.

0:50:40 > 0:50:43What a riot of pattern and colour.

0:50:43 > 0:50:46Very uplifting. A proper adult party room, I'd say.

0:50:46 > 0:50:49I love the fact she's really pushed her budget to go out

0:50:49 > 0:50:52and buy this quite expensive designer wallpaper.

0:50:52 > 0:50:53I think it's money well spent.

0:50:53 > 0:50:57She's offset it with this very pale sage,

0:50:57 > 0:50:59which, in my opinion, just calms the whole thing down a bit.

0:50:59 > 0:51:01There's an element of balance there.

0:51:01 > 0:51:03Certainly interior design is all about balance.

0:51:03 > 0:51:06Bright, zingy wallpaper, which I adore.

0:51:06 > 0:51:09The green, which is one of my favourite colours.

0:51:09 > 0:51:12But putting the two together is not quite working for me.

0:51:12 > 0:51:14I certainly would like to pick that cupboard,

0:51:14 > 0:51:16put it under my arm and take it home with me.

0:51:16 > 0:51:18I think it's just magic.

0:51:18 > 0:51:20I think Susan came up with an ingenious solution

0:51:20 > 0:51:23to deal with the windows, which is creating some shutters.

0:51:23 > 0:51:25Especially because she's left

0:51:25 > 0:51:28the stained glass windows open at the top.

0:51:28 > 0:51:32So when this is closed off, the stained glass sings.

0:51:32 > 0:51:35Now, one of the big challenges for Susan was how to integrate

0:51:35 > 0:51:39this very traditional dark brown Victorian fireplace into her scheme.

0:51:39 > 0:51:42- Has she pulled it off? - I'm afraid not.

0:51:42 > 0:51:46Just a bit of the purple colour of the cornflour or the green or

0:51:46 > 0:51:48the pink or something in that

0:51:48 > 0:51:52just to integrate this rather large edifice back into the room.

0:51:52 > 0:51:54- That's what these were designed for, after all.- Yeah.

0:51:54 > 0:51:56Seeing this room, Sophie,

0:51:56 > 0:52:01it leaves me with no doubt Susan really is the master of colour.

0:52:01 > 0:52:05She can play it, she takes risks that most people would never dare

0:52:05 > 0:52:06and are not able to.

0:52:10 > 0:52:13Welcome to your new room, Tracy.

0:52:13 > 0:52:16Wow, it's not my room! It's amazing!

0:52:16 > 0:52:19The thing that smacks you in the face is obviously

0:52:19 > 0:52:20the great floral patterns.

0:52:20 > 0:52:23Definitely. It's exactly what I asked for so I'm really pleased.

0:52:23 > 0:52:25I love the colours.

0:52:25 > 0:52:26Have you seen what's behind me?

0:52:26 > 0:52:28Yeah. SHE LAUGHS

0:52:28 > 0:52:33I'm not sure if it will stay in here, but I do like it in here.

0:52:36 > 0:52:39Now the judges have to decide which two amateur designers have

0:52:39 > 0:52:42done enough to make it through to the final.

0:52:44 > 0:52:46The room was definitely a trial this time.

0:52:46 > 0:52:49'It's been more colours than a rainbow.'

0:52:49 > 0:52:52I think I've had to hold my nerve to get it to the end.

0:52:53 > 0:52:56'I've pushed it. I had an ambitious design.

0:52:56 > 0:52:58I can walk away from this

0:52:58 > 0:53:01and know that I've given it my every single ounce of effort.

0:53:04 > 0:53:07'Now that it's all finished, it looks so beautiful.'

0:53:07 > 0:53:10I just hope it's enough to get me through to the final.

0:53:10 > 0:53:12'I would love to go through to the next round

0:53:12 > 0:53:14'for my children as much as anything else.'

0:53:14 > 0:53:16You never know, do you?

0:53:18 > 0:53:21So, judges, semifinals - we've upped the ante.

0:53:21 > 0:53:23How did our designers respond?

0:53:23 > 0:53:28I think the challenge for them here has been that the rooms are so big.

0:53:28 > 0:53:31I think they've had to be extra resourceful to really create

0:53:31 > 0:53:33a very cohesive and impressive room scheme.

0:53:33 > 0:53:36Let's start with Sarah. You wanted her to prove her versatility.

0:53:36 > 0:53:37Did she do that?

0:53:37 > 0:53:39Absolutely. She's been really good

0:53:39 > 0:53:41at making that cheap and cheerful look before

0:53:41 > 0:53:43look exquisite and make it work.

0:53:43 > 0:53:45Now she had a very grand room.

0:53:45 > 0:53:50The beauty of it, though, was that she showed she can do rather grand

0:53:50 > 0:53:54formal design and yet still add a little edge to it too.

0:53:54 > 0:53:57She went for this neon yellow pop.

0:53:57 > 0:54:00I loved it on the chandelier. I thought it was excellent.

0:54:00 > 0:54:04Personally, I felt she went a step too far with the fireplace.

0:54:04 > 0:54:05And maybe that's her naivety.

0:54:05 > 0:54:09She doesn't quite know when to go for it and when to hold back.

0:54:09 > 0:54:11And Luke? Did he up his game?

0:54:11 > 0:54:15Luke is a man of invention and it's very exciting to see what he does.

0:54:15 > 0:54:18The elevation behind the piano with the pictures just looked

0:54:18 > 0:54:20absolutely exquisite.

0:54:20 > 0:54:23And also, he transformed a rather sort of basic fireplace

0:54:23 > 0:54:25into something rather interesting.

0:54:25 > 0:54:29His lighting was absolutely spot-on. He knows how to display great

0:54:29 > 0:54:32use of colour, but there are a few things on his presentation that

0:54:32 > 0:54:35didn't make it to the final design, and that's just a desperate shame.

0:54:35 > 0:54:38Now, Jordan. You can never miss a design by Jordan.

0:54:38 > 0:54:40What a transformation.

0:54:40 > 0:54:43I needed to look at that room a couple of times to be convinced

0:54:43 > 0:54:46that it's actually really quite serious interior design.

0:54:46 > 0:54:49He played with colour in a way that I've never expected to see before.

0:54:49 > 0:54:52I was really impressed with how Jordan handled the brief.

0:54:52 > 0:54:54He very cleverly thought of the practical solutions

0:54:54 > 0:54:56and some excellent storage.

0:54:56 > 0:55:01But then he went and did a sort of radiator cover in plywood too

0:55:01 > 0:55:03and it just all looked a bit clumsy.

0:55:03 > 0:55:05How about Susan? How did she do?

0:55:05 > 0:55:09Susan again showed us that she can experiment and play with

0:55:09 > 0:55:13colour like nobody else can and that room just popped with it.

0:55:13 > 0:55:17Susan's got a great vision for the bigger picture.

0:55:17 > 0:55:19Colour, wallpaper, big items of furniture.

0:55:19 > 0:55:22But actually in a room that size you need to go a little bit further

0:55:22 > 0:55:26with the accessories and actually really pulling the scheme together.

0:55:26 > 0:55:29It's getting serious now. It's the semifinal and you two are looking

0:55:29 > 0:55:32for designers, not with potential, but ones who can deliver.

0:55:32 > 0:55:35Absolutely. We've got to take this decision very seriously

0:55:35 > 0:55:38because we possibly could change the course of these people's careers.

0:55:49 > 0:55:53Designers, all four of you have done so well to get here.

0:55:53 > 0:55:56But it's the semifinals. It's getting serious now.

0:55:56 > 0:55:59Before we tell you the decision, I just wanted to thank all of you

0:55:59 > 0:56:01because it's been such a wonderful journey.

0:56:01 > 0:56:03I think all of you have shown us

0:56:03 > 0:56:06so much, kept us very inspired and interested by what you're doing.

0:56:06 > 0:56:11It's time for the finals. Two of you are going to be going through

0:56:11 > 0:56:14and these two have made a very, very difficult decision.

0:56:14 > 0:56:18The designers going through to the finals are...

0:56:18 > 0:56:20Jordan...

0:56:20 > 0:56:21and Sarah.

0:56:26 > 0:56:28- Thank you. Thank you. - Thank you very much.

0:56:28 > 0:56:32It all happens really quickly and it's so bizarre.

0:56:32 > 0:56:34You're almost not... It's like an out-of-body experience.

0:56:34 > 0:56:36- You like it, then?- Fantastic.- Yeah.

0:56:36 > 0:56:38- Thank you very much. - Really, really impressed.

0:56:38 > 0:56:42I put Jordon through because not only have I discovered

0:56:42 > 0:56:45he's extremely adaptable to practical demands,

0:56:45 > 0:56:50but on top of that he's still able to maintain an exquisite style.

0:56:50 > 0:56:52That doesn't feel real, does it? Oh, my word.

0:56:52 > 0:56:56I feel completely surreal. That hasn't sunk in at all yet.

0:56:57 > 0:56:58I'm speechless.

0:56:58 > 0:57:01- Do you like it? - Oh, it's wonderful!

0:57:01 > 0:57:04She's got a great originality, she's very artistic

0:57:04 > 0:57:06and she puts a very quirky twist on everything

0:57:06 > 0:57:10and yet has beautiful sense of taste and design.

0:57:10 > 0:57:13Blimey. Well done. And commiserations, you two.

0:57:13 > 0:57:15'Not happy, cos I didn't win.'

0:57:15 > 0:57:21The judges, for whatever reasons, thought I didn't make it so, I mean,

0:57:21 > 0:57:24that's...that's life.

0:57:25 > 0:57:28- Well done, Susan.- Commiserations.

0:57:28 > 0:57:30I really have enjoyed it, definitely.

0:57:30 > 0:57:33I need to have some sleep now.

0:57:33 > 0:57:35We've got to the stage where you've got two people

0:57:35 > 0:57:39who are exquisitely good designers.

0:57:39 > 0:57:41They're the best amongst the best.

0:57:41 > 0:57:43I am so excited about the final

0:57:43 > 0:57:46and I think it's going to be a very close match.

0:57:46 > 0:57:49Oh, my God! So much more. I can do so much more.

0:57:49 > 0:57:51Oh, it'd be fantastic to win, wouldn't it?

0:57:55 > 0:57:58By the end of the 19th century, British homes like these

0:57:58 > 0:58:01were celebrated everywhere as world leaders in house design

0:58:01 > 0:58:04for the way they combined arts and crafts beauty

0:58:04 > 0:58:05with modern functionality -

0:58:05 > 0:58:10a spirit definitely captured by our semi-finalist designers to a T.

0:58:12 > 0:58:16Next time, it's the final and the stakes have been raised.

0:58:16 > 0:58:18The architecture and the period

0:58:18 > 0:58:19might be a bit of a challenge.

0:58:19 > 0:58:21The worst bit is the bit with the door in.

0:58:21 > 0:58:24He's got a green cloth that I don't want, that's the problem.

0:58:24 > 0:58:27And the winner of the Great Interior Design Challenge is...
