0:00:03 > 0:00:07In Britain, we have an amazing array of places we call home -

0:00:07 > 0:00:09from thatched cottages and conversions,

0:00:09 > 0:00:12to terraced housing and tower blocks.

0:00:12 > 0:00:15But when it comes to interior design, we don't always make

0:00:15 > 0:00:16the best of the rooms we live in.

0:00:20 > 0:00:23So, we're asking 24 amateur designers who believe

0:00:23 > 0:00:26they've got what it takes to be the next big thing in interiors

0:00:26 > 0:00:28to show us how it should be done.

0:00:29 > 0:00:33We'll travel across the country and through the ages,

0:00:33 > 0:00:36to Victorian avenues, Art Deco cul-de-sacs

0:00:36 > 0:00:39and Regency squares.

0:00:40 > 0:00:44Each time, three would-be designers take on similar rooms

0:00:44 > 0:00:46in three neighbouring homes.

0:00:46 > 0:00:49I don't really hate it, but I'm not sure.

0:00:49 > 0:00:52I haven't upholstered cat beds before.

0:00:52 > 0:00:55This is going really well.

0:00:55 > 0:00:59Across eight heats, they'll compete for a place in the quarterfinals.

0:00:59 > 0:01:02Judging them are designer and president elect of

0:01:02 > 0:01:06the British Institute of Interior Design, Daniel Hopwood.

0:01:06 > 0:01:09The really great designers have a level of flexibility

0:01:09 > 0:01:11and they can work round a client,

0:01:11 > 0:01:13and yet give them a lot of style.

0:01:13 > 0:01:15And interior stylist and magazine journalist

0:01:15 > 0:01:16Sophie Robinson.

0:01:16 > 0:01:19What I'm looking for in this competition is designers

0:01:19 > 0:01:22who have a high level of creativity.

0:01:22 > 0:01:25Now it's their imaginations and design skills

0:01:25 > 0:01:28that'll determine who'll come out on top.

0:01:35 > 0:01:38This time, our amateur designers will be putting their own

0:01:38 > 0:01:43spin on an unusual room in three 1930s Art Deco houses.

0:01:43 > 0:01:46The rooms may be similar, but each designer's clients

0:01:46 > 0:01:48have very different demands.

0:01:48 > 0:01:51I think Catherine and Roy are really going to like it.

0:01:51 > 0:01:53If you keep putting gold in things, I'm going to think

0:01:53 > 0:01:54I'm going to get a gold room.

0:01:54 > 0:01:56I know I don't really want a gold room.

0:01:56 > 0:01:58But only one of our amateurs can go

0:01:58 > 0:02:01through to the next round of the competition.

0:02:01 > 0:02:02What happened here?

0:02:02 > 0:02:05I'm looking at that, but... Hmm, don't get it.

0:02:05 > 0:02:07That room's ready to be photographed and put in a magazine.

0:02:07 > 0:02:09They have come to a decision

0:02:09 > 0:02:12about which designer shows the most potential.

0:02:23 > 0:02:24This cinema in Beckenham, Kent,

0:02:24 > 0:02:27was designed by the architect Robert Cromie

0:02:27 > 0:02:29and opened in 1930.

0:02:29 > 0:02:31It's got all of the details you associate with

0:02:31 > 0:02:33classic Art Deco styling -

0:02:33 > 0:02:35the bold geometric shapes, the sensuous lines

0:02:35 > 0:02:39and the kind of eclectic decoration that mixes

0:02:39 > 0:02:41Aztec style with neoclassicism.

0:02:43 > 0:02:46But the influence of Art Deco reached far wider

0:02:46 > 0:02:48than the cinema of the time.

0:02:50 > 0:02:52This is Park Langley,

0:02:52 > 0:02:54the 3,000-acre suburb of Bromley.

0:02:54 > 0:02:58Most of the 1,500 homes here are suitably conservative,

0:02:58 > 0:03:00but there are some rare exceptions.

0:03:07 > 0:03:10These five houses were built in 1934,

0:03:10 > 0:03:12and to a new cinema-loving generation

0:03:12 > 0:03:15they must have seemed like the glamorous other-worldly homes

0:03:15 > 0:03:17they'd seen on the silver screen.

0:03:17 > 0:03:20The white box-like architecture with its intersecting vertical

0:03:20 > 0:03:21and horizontal lines and its

0:03:21 > 0:03:25geometric shapes echoes the work of Cubist artists.

0:03:26 > 0:03:29Each of these houses has a unique space,

0:03:29 > 0:03:31which is quintessentially Art Deco.

0:03:33 > 0:03:35Wrapped in glass, these sunrooms were designed

0:03:35 > 0:03:39so occupants could bathe in light and enjoy the view.

0:03:39 > 0:03:41And it's this unusual room

0:03:41 > 0:03:46that our three amateur designers now have the opportunity to transform.

0:03:47 > 0:03:49I enjoy making my own

0:03:49 > 0:03:52house environment really beautiful to live in.

0:03:52 > 0:03:55For me, I think it's just very much I've found my creative outlet.

0:03:55 > 0:03:59I don't sing or dance or play music or anything like that.

0:03:59 > 0:04:01I'm not even particularly very good at art.

0:04:01 > 0:04:03And it's totally different to anything that I do at work,

0:04:03 > 0:04:06or being a mother or something like that.

0:04:06 > 0:04:07But it's part of me.

0:04:09 > 0:04:12'I would say that I'm quite a practical individual.'

0:04:12 > 0:04:15I've got a degree in textile design for furnishings.

0:04:15 > 0:04:20So I can do upholstery, I can sew, I can paint.

0:04:20 > 0:04:26I'm from quite a creative family of musicians and dressmakers

0:04:26 > 0:04:28and decorators and builders.

0:04:28 > 0:04:31I've decided now that I'm not meant to do anything else.

0:04:31 > 0:04:34That is it, I'm supposed to be an interior designer.

0:04:34 > 0:04:38'At the moment, I'm a greetings card designer.'

0:04:38 > 0:04:41I'm a really kind of all-round creative person,

0:04:41 > 0:04:44so my love for interior design has

0:04:44 > 0:04:48built from studying a degree in illustration.

0:04:48 > 0:04:50Growing up in North Devon,

0:04:50 > 0:04:53always down by the beach, going for walks,

0:04:53 > 0:04:55and that's really inspired me in my work.

0:04:55 > 0:05:00My style is that kind of costal vintage with

0:05:00 > 0:05:02a little modern twist on it.

0:05:06 > 0:05:09They've never worked professionally before.

0:05:09 > 0:05:12Now they have £1,000 and 48 hours spread over three days

0:05:12 > 0:05:15to transform a room each.

0:05:21 > 0:05:24The first Art Deco house belongs to Catherine and Roy

0:05:24 > 0:05:28and is a testament to their seven years of meticulous restoration.

0:05:29 > 0:05:33We really love the style and architecture and the furniture,

0:05:33 > 0:05:36so we really wanted to translate that into our own home.

0:05:36 > 0:05:40Having two young children running around, it would be nice to

0:05:40 > 0:05:44have a grown-up space that we can kind of talk about our day and...

0:05:44 > 0:05:48Yeah, bit of fun, bit wild, but true to the theme of Art Deco,

0:05:48 > 0:05:49then we're up for it.

0:05:51 > 0:05:54Before the designer gets started, the judges want

0:05:54 > 0:05:57to explore the challenges of each sunroom.

0:05:59 > 0:06:01Sweet little space!

0:06:01 > 0:06:03And windows all the way round, too.

0:06:03 > 0:06:06Because sun was a new concept in the '30s.

0:06:06 > 0:06:08It started with Coco Chanel.

0:06:08 > 0:06:10She went to a holiday down to the South of France,

0:06:10 > 0:06:14came back to Paris with a tan and everybody thought,

0:06:14 > 0:06:15"Ooh, this is a new thing."

0:06:15 > 0:06:17And then everybody started sunbathing.

0:06:17 > 0:06:20Right. So, whereas before, interiors were quite dark,

0:06:20 > 0:06:23with heavy dressings, dark colours,

0:06:23 > 0:06:26this is a whole new beginning, isn't it, to have these huge round

0:06:26 > 0:06:28- panoramic windows? - Embrace the light.

0:06:28 > 0:06:31Also you have the horizontal that you see here,

0:06:31 > 0:06:32which was part of that sort of

0:06:32 > 0:06:34streamline fashion that was going on.

0:06:34 > 0:06:37Everything looked like it was going 100mph,

0:06:37 > 0:06:38even if it was still a house.

0:06:38 > 0:06:40It's almost like a conservatory space.

0:06:40 > 0:06:42You've got wrap-around views all the way round

0:06:42 > 0:06:44and you don't want to disguise those.

0:06:44 > 0:06:47The windows probably just need really simple, sleek,

0:06:47 > 0:06:50even roller blinds that completely disappear, because actually it's the

0:06:50 > 0:06:54minimal architectural detail in here which is so lovely.

0:06:54 > 0:06:56And if you fuss that with lots of layers of fabrics,

0:06:56 > 0:06:58you're going to kind of kill the effect.

0:06:58 > 0:07:00But it's going to get hot as well, isn't it?

0:07:00 > 0:07:02So there must be a bit of a challenge there.

0:07:02 > 0:07:04The sunrooms were deigned to be used in

0:07:04 > 0:07:08conjunction with the roof terrace, so our designers will work on both.

0:07:09 > 0:07:11Oh, this is wonderful.

0:07:11 > 0:07:13Oh, it's amazing!

0:07:13 > 0:07:15How special to be able to go onto your roof

0:07:15 > 0:07:17to look out over your garden.

0:07:17 > 0:07:20From a design point of view, they make a lot of sense.

0:07:20 > 0:07:22It's amazing how they didn't catch on more, actually.

0:07:22 > 0:07:26I think the fear then was that they all leaked and that's changed.

0:07:26 > 0:07:30Yeah, exactly. I can see they've had the whole roof done,

0:07:30 > 0:07:32which has obviously been a great investment.

0:07:32 > 0:07:34Now they've got to think about what they're going to put on top,

0:07:34 > 0:07:36cos this isn't suitable for

0:07:36 > 0:07:38laying furniture or anything. You would damage it.

0:07:41 > 0:07:42Tackling this 1930s brief

0:07:42 > 0:07:47is 39-year-old executive assistant, Louise.

0:07:47 > 0:07:49Like all our designers, she's been working on her clients' brief

0:07:49 > 0:07:53for a week, but this is the first time they'll meet in person.

0:07:53 > 0:07:56Start with the room

0:07:56 > 0:07:59and this is what I've come up with.

0:07:59 > 0:08:02During her meeting with the homeowner,

0:08:02 > 0:08:05Louise will be judged on her design, her interpersonal skills

0:08:05 > 0:08:08and how adaptable she is to her clients' needs.

0:08:09 > 0:08:13Now I know it's very important for you and your husband to have

0:08:13 > 0:08:17a bar up here, so you can enjoy your evenings with a gin and tonic.

0:08:17 > 0:08:22So we're going to build a curved bar that just comes into this space.

0:08:22 > 0:08:25That's all going to be lovely black gloss on the top.

0:08:25 > 0:08:27What's this here?

0:08:27 > 0:08:30I know that you... Yes, I know that you like the Art Deco stencils.

0:08:30 > 0:08:34- Yeah.- So I'm hoping to put those up the stairs.

0:08:34 > 0:08:36- Oh, great.- And also this one here.

0:08:36 > 0:08:38I'll put that round the edge of the bar.

0:08:38 > 0:08:41What I'd really like to do is the green wall.

0:08:41 > 0:08:42Absolutely, I love it.

0:08:42 > 0:08:46Which I'm thinking of painting that kind of all emerald green.

0:08:46 > 0:08:48- Fancy.- Yeah.

0:08:48 > 0:08:50And so I'm hoping that ticks the boxes.

0:08:50 > 0:08:53Louise's Art Deco cocktail bar has been met with approval

0:08:53 > 0:08:56and she plans to continue her green theme

0:08:56 > 0:08:59outside with artificial grass on the terrace.

0:08:59 > 0:09:02With the outdoor space, we're going to partially deck,

0:09:02 > 0:09:04just in the front of the door here.

0:09:04 > 0:09:06It is difficult, cos we never think...

0:09:06 > 0:09:09I only had pictures, so everything's kind of in my head.

0:09:09 > 0:09:13So now, being here now, I'll hope that we can have a little play around

0:09:13 > 0:09:15and see where the best place to put things will be.

0:09:15 > 0:09:17- DANIEL:- Loving that emerald green, aren't you?

0:09:17 > 0:09:20SOPHIE: Yeah, it's so brilliant. It's a really fashionable colour,

0:09:20 > 0:09:22which I think is great for this family, because while

0:09:22 > 0:09:24Catherine and Roy love Art Deco,

0:09:24 > 0:09:26they are still quite a modern family

0:09:26 > 0:09:28and they like to move their tastes on.

0:09:28 > 0:09:30I think that colour will be really punchy.

0:09:30 > 0:09:32I just hope she uses enough of it and doesn't just have

0:09:32 > 0:09:34a skinny stripe on the chimney breast.

0:09:36 > 0:09:37Louise now has three days,

0:09:37 > 0:09:40£1,000 and the help of a builder

0:09:40 > 0:09:42to turn her vision into a reality.

0:09:42 > 0:09:44This is where the bar is going to be.

0:09:44 > 0:09:47- Oh, right, yeah. - Fitting onto this wall.- OK.

0:09:47 > 0:09:52I brought a big unit, a storage unit, that I think is going to fit

0:09:52 > 0:09:55perfectly in there, but you're going to need to remove all the shelves.

0:09:55 > 0:09:58- Right, so, let's get cracking. - Yeah, no worries.

0:09:58 > 0:10:01Louise has a bold plan to paint the main wall in

0:10:01 > 0:10:04an Art Deco-inspired emerald green.

0:10:04 > 0:10:06It's going to be nice, just what I wanted.

0:10:06 > 0:10:12So, I think Catherine and Roy are really going to like it, as well.

0:10:14 > 0:10:16Next door live Rachel and Sue,

0:10:16 > 0:10:19whose sunroom was extended by previous owners.

0:10:19 > 0:10:23While the glass walls have been lost, their floor space is larger.

0:10:24 > 0:10:27It'll be for friends who come round and have drinks with us,

0:10:27 > 0:10:29so I think keeping it light,

0:10:29 > 0:10:33keeping it grown-up is exactly what we want.

0:10:33 > 0:10:37We've had several holidays in South Beach in Miami, which is all

0:10:37 > 0:10:40Art Deco, so we quite like the colour, quite like the style.

0:10:40 > 0:10:42We don't want it to feel cluttered

0:10:42 > 0:10:45and we don't want it to feel garish.

0:10:45 > 0:10:47We want it to feel sophisticated.

0:10:51 > 0:10:53Come and have a look, Sophie. Much bigger, isn't it?

0:10:53 > 0:10:56- Completely different! - I know what happened here.

0:10:56 > 0:10:58It's now locally listed, this building.

0:10:58 > 0:11:00But before that happened,

0:11:00 > 0:11:03they managed to get away with extending up here.

0:11:03 > 0:11:06There's a little bit of a terrace out there,

0:11:06 > 0:11:10tiny, but that whole sunroom concept that the others have

0:11:10 > 0:11:13and that lovely '20s, '30s feel has disappeared.

0:11:13 > 0:11:17Sue and Rachel are up for quite a Miami Beach style.

0:11:17 > 0:11:20So they're looking for something that's got

0:11:20 > 0:11:22those lovely fresh colours - the pale pinks,

0:11:22 > 0:11:24the pale greens, which are also very '30s, too.

0:11:26 > 0:11:28Given the task of taking their sunroom

0:11:28 > 0:11:32from Beckenham to Miami Beach is 26-year-old Amy from Bath.

0:11:33 > 0:11:35OK. Hi, Rachel, hi, Sue.

0:11:35 > 0:11:38I've kind of created some mood boards.

0:11:38 > 0:11:42So those beautiful pistachios and the creams and lilacs.

0:11:42 > 0:11:45And I kind of brought in more of a plummy colour

0:11:45 > 0:11:47to give it a real sort of rich feel.

0:11:47 > 0:11:49Well, I like the pastel colours.

0:11:49 > 0:11:51- The pastel colours?- These ones.- Yeah.

0:11:51 > 0:11:53- Because I like to play it safe.- OK.

0:11:53 > 0:11:56I'm not so keen on that, actually. It's so dark.

0:11:56 > 0:12:00One of the things that we were really keen on is keeping the light.

0:12:00 > 0:12:04We could maybe just do one section of a wall and have, like,

0:12:04 > 0:12:06five mirrors and gold frames.

0:12:06 > 0:12:09I quite like the concept of having a frame wall.

0:12:09 > 0:12:13I'm not sure I was thinking of gold

0:12:13 > 0:12:16in my Miami-feel beachy place at all.

0:12:16 > 0:12:18Well, I've brought some Devonshire driftwood.

0:12:18 > 0:12:22So, I thought I could make some shelving units out of driftwood.

0:12:22 > 0:12:25- That sounds good. - Bringing that beach theme back in.

0:12:25 > 0:12:27And some beautiful palm plants.

0:12:27 > 0:12:32Amy's scheme marries her signature Devon coast style

0:12:32 > 0:12:34with an Art Deco chic.

0:12:34 > 0:12:37Obviously, this beautiful Victorian bucket chair

0:12:37 > 0:12:39with this damask pattern,

0:12:39 > 0:12:44I'm going to fringe that with some gold fringing.

0:12:44 > 0:12:46OK. Don't go too heavy on the gold.

0:12:46 > 0:12:49- No?- Would be my... I'm...

0:12:49 > 0:12:52Yeah. For me, if you keep putting gold in things, I'm going

0:12:52 > 0:12:54to think I'm going to get a gold room

0:12:54 > 0:12:57and I don't think... Well, I know I don't really want a gold room.

0:12:57 > 0:13:00I've got the confidence that it'll work

0:13:00 > 0:13:03and that we can go through everything and it's going to...

0:13:03 > 0:13:05You know, I want it to suit you.

0:13:05 > 0:13:06SOPHIE: I'm not still completely sold

0:13:06 > 0:13:09on the fact she gets Miami Beach style.

0:13:09 > 0:13:12She's very young, and she's got a lot of enthusiasm

0:13:12 > 0:13:16and actually I do think she's got some talent, but I don't think,

0:13:16 > 0:13:18as we said, she understands the look.

0:13:18 > 0:13:19AMY: From my mood boards,

0:13:19 > 0:13:22maybe I didn't show enough of the beach theme,

0:13:22 > 0:13:25but there is going to be a really kind of heavy beach theme in there,

0:13:25 > 0:13:27with the Devonshire driftwood and the palms,

0:13:27 > 0:13:29so it's going to be a really beautiful beach theme

0:13:29 > 0:13:32running through with that Art Deco feel.

0:13:33 > 0:13:36The final home belongs to Nigel and Heather,

0:13:36 > 0:13:38whose sunroom is the smallest of the three.

0:13:38 > 0:13:41It's currently used as Nigel's office,

0:13:41 > 0:13:43but it's far from functional.

0:13:43 > 0:13:46I have a computer up there and a printer

0:13:46 > 0:13:48and do some work up there,

0:13:48 > 0:13:51but it's not ideal, the way it's set up.

0:13:51 > 0:13:54We don't really use it the way it should be.

0:13:54 > 0:13:57It should be something that gives the house a real wow factor, but...

0:13:57 > 0:14:01- Yeah, yeah. - ..somehow, it never happened.

0:14:01 > 0:14:04- DANIEL:- It's a lot smaller than the last one.

0:14:04 > 0:14:06Oh! Careful of that thing, as well.

0:14:06 > 0:14:08- Oh, dear!- Yeah.

0:14:08 > 0:14:10And peach, as well. That's terrible, isn't it?

0:14:10 > 0:14:12It's really bijou up here, isn't it?

0:14:12 > 0:14:14It's tiny. There's not much space behind.

0:14:14 > 0:14:16There's a load of suitcases behind here.

0:14:16 > 0:14:18These houses don't have lofts.

0:14:18 > 0:14:20That's one advantage of a pitched roof, you get to put...

0:14:20 > 0:14:22Oh, yes, somewhere to put your cases!

0:14:22 > 0:14:25I think there's a bit more of a challenge than the other one.

0:14:25 > 0:14:28So, as I understand it, yeah, Nigel uses this as his office

0:14:28 > 0:14:30in quite a serious way.

0:14:30 > 0:14:33He's got oodles of filing and storage and that all has to stay.

0:14:33 > 0:14:37And one of the key problems is just too much sunlight.

0:14:37 > 0:14:39It's coming at you all round and when you're looking at a monitor,

0:14:39 > 0:14:42if you've got the sun glaring in, it's a nightmare

0:14:42 > 0:14:44So I think our designer has to really

0:14:44 > 0:14:45address how to control that.

0:14:50 > 0:14:5330-year-old Charmaine has a degree in textile design

0:14:53 > 0:14:57and is eager to impress with her practical skills.

0:14:57 > 0:15:00Homeowners Nigel and Heather want to deviate from Deco

0:15:00 > 0:15:02and have asked for a 1950s theme.

0:15:04 > 0:15:08So, what I have decided to do in here, in answer to your brief,

0:15:08 > 0:15:11I hope, is what I like to call a retro corner.

0:15:11 > 0:15:14We've got a beautiful retro-looking pendant lamp,

0:15:14 > 0:15:20which I'm hoping isn't going to be in your way when you come in and out...

0:15:20 > 0:15:21It's quite a low ceiling.

0:15:21 > 0:15:25- And I've actually sourced for you this original 1950s desk.- Wow.

0:15:25 > 0:15:26I'm very proud of that.

0:15:26 > 0:15:29And I'm hoping that's going to be our star piece.

0:15:29 > 0:15:31I'm looking at this and thinking I have a computer,

0:15:31 > 0:15:35I have a printer and, if it's all going to sit on the desk,

0:15:35 > 0:15:37how much room am I going to have?

0:15:37 > 0:15:40- Is it actually going to be practical?- OK, OK.

0:15:40 > 0:15:41So that's your concern.

0:15:41 > 0:15:43We can definitely address that.

0:15:43 > 0:15:47I am going to be making you some bespoke pelmets

0:15:47 > 0:15:50to cover the blackout linen roller blinds.

0:15:50 > 0:15:53They're going to be in sort of a gorgeous designer

0:15:53 > 0:15:55retro sort of 1950s fabric.

0:15:55 > 0:15:58- What about storage?- This is just a floor plan of the space.

0:15:58 > 0:16:01So I'm planning to put shelves actually just along

0:16:01 > 0:16:03the chimney breast at the back, just here.

0:16:03 > 0:16:04What, on this breast?

0:16:04 > 0:16:06No, no. On the other side just there.

0:16:06 > 0:16:09- OK.- So we're going to put some shelving down there for you.

0:16:09 > 0:16:13Charmaine's simple '50s scheme will spread through to the terrace.

0:16:13 > 0:16:17I'm going to clean up all of your tiles for you.

0:16:17 > 0:16:19Just as you come through the door here, we're going to

0:16:19 > 0:16:22sort of have a nine-metre square area here.

0:16:22 > 0:16:26- We'll put some lovely seating and some plants out there for you.- OK.

0:16:27 > 0:16:30Well... We shall see what we shall see.

0:16:30 > 0:16:34SOPHIE: I think Charmaine gave a very reasonable presentation.

0:16:34 > 0:16:37My concerns was that she had a lack of confidence.

0:16:37 > 0:16:41There was a lot of, "I hope this is going to work."

0:16:41 > 0:16:44Charmaine is in a competition,

0:16:44 > 0:16:47so she's got to be the polished, elegant presenter

0:16:47 > 0:16:50who is convincing about the design that she's

0:16:50 > 0:16:52going to do in someone's house.

0:16:52 > 0:16:55As Charmaine clears the clutter from the office, it's clear she's

0:16:55 > 0:16:59not persuaded her clients on the choice of her furnishings.

0:16:59 > 0:17:01I suppose my real concern is the desk was

0:17:01 > 0:17:03designed in the '50s,

0:17:03 > 0:17:06when you had a telephone and a pad of paper.

0:17:06 > 0:17:10Now we've got a computer, a screen, printer.

0:17:10 > 0:17:12Is there going to be enough room?

0:17:12 > 0:17:14I don't know how practical it's going to be.

0:17:16 > 0:17:19Work in all three sunrooms is under way, and,

0:17:19 > 0:17:23as they rejuvenate these historic homes, it's easy to forget that,

0:17:23 > 0:17:2580 years ago, these buildings were

0:17:25 > 0:17:27the embodiment of cutting-edge design.

0:17:30 > 0:17:34What we call Art Deco was part of a wider modernist movement

0:17:34 > 0:17:36that infused everything from literature and art

0:17:36 > 0:17:39to political thought and architecture.

0:17:39 > 0:17:41It embraced machinery and technology,

0:17:41 > 0:17:43offering a brighter future to people who,

0:17:43 > 0:17:46100 years earlier, might have worked in agriculture

0:17:46 > 0:17:50or the factories of the Industrial Revolution.

0:17:50 > 0:17:52The modernist movement, propelled

0:17:52 > 0:17:54by scientific and medical advances,

0:17:54 > 0:17:58also celebrated health, fitness and gymnastics.

0:17:58 > 0:18:00The sunroom epitomises this spirit.

0:18:00 > 0:18:03The benefits of sunlight were now embraced by all,

0:18:03 > 0:18:05and, in the sanatoriums of central Europe

0:18:05 > 0:18:09that haunt modernist literature, the sun was even considered a cure.

0:18:12 > 0:18:16Today, the sunrooms have altogether different functions and

0:18:16 > 0:18:17it's up to our designers to

0:18:17 > 0:18:20tailor-make the rooms for their clients.

0:18:20 > 0:18:23Nigel uses this room as an office, so Charmaine has invested

0:18:23 > 0:18:25a quarter of the total budget,

0:18:25 > 0:18:28£250, on blinds to keep out the sun.

0:18:30 > 0:18:34I am putting up some lovely roller blinds

0:18:34 > 0:18:37and I would like for us to build a pelmet, actually,

0:18:37 > 0:18:40just to go all the way around the room.

0:18:40 > 0:18:43On this side and then, starting again going down here.

0:18:43 > 0:18:46Outside, Charmaine is giving the roof terrace a face-lift,

0:18:46 > 0:18:48with an acidic patio cleaner.

0:18:48 > 0:18:52At £10, it's an effective way of rejuvenating tiles.

0:18:53 > 0:18:55So, the moment of truth. Let's have a go.

0:18:57 > 0:18:58Oh, wow, look at that.

0:18:58 > 0:19:02A lot better than it was to begin with.

0:19:03 > 0:19:07Unfortunately, it's not just Charmaine's hands getting dirty.

0:19:08 > 0:19:11I've actually just noticed, all the grime and mess that we've been

0:19:11 > 0:19:13sort of getting off the patio

0:19:13 > 0:19:16is running down the side of the house.

0:19:16 > 0:19:19I'm going to have to see about

0:19:19 > 0:19:21cleaning that up.

0:19:21 > 0:19:24Oh, my goodness! What a mess!

0:19:26 > 0:19:28Until now, Charmaine's rented one-bedroom flat

0:19:28 > 0:19:33in Harrow has been her only outlet to practise her design skills.

0:19:33 > 0:19:37As a renter, I wasn't able to sort of go crazy

0:19:37 > 0:19:40and put up wallpaper in here, which was what I would love to have done.

0:19:40 > 0:19:42So, I actually took some wallpaper samples,

0:19:42 > 0:19:44brought some inexpensive frames

0:19:44 > 0:19:48and have created a really sort of great feature wall with my bed head.

0:19:51 > 0:19:54So, I've been working really hard over the past two years,

0:19:54 > 0:19:55doing internships.

0:19:55 > 0:19:58But I think now is my time to really sort of make my mark

0:19:58 > 0:20:00in the interior design industry.

0:20:00 > 0:20:03I have this saying, actually, "Design, or die trying."

0:20:03 > 0:20:07So, my dream now, really, is to be a working interior designer.

0:20:08 > 0:20:11Despite her passion, this is her first ever client

0:20:11 > 0:20:14and she has some doubts.

0:20:14 > 0:20:17- SOPHIE:- How do you feel it went after your briefing?

0:20:17 > 0:20:19I was a bit nervous, cos they weren't jumping up and down.

0:20:19 > 0:20:22But I'm confident that I can wow them with the finished product.

0:20:22 > 0:20:25I was feeling concerned, cos he was getting a bit

0:20:25 > 0:20:27nervous about his desk and I just wondered

0:20:27 > 0:20:29if there's going to be another solution,

0:20:29 > 0:20:32as opposed to the desk that you've got, which is

0:20:32 > 0:20:36sort of neat and retro and lovely and to brief, but...

0:20:36 > 0:20:38I'm actually sort of thinking...

0:20:38 > 0:20:41Yeah, I took a bit of a risk, which I'm a bit nervous about now,

0:20:41 > 0:20:43but I'm sort of thinking on my toes as to whether or not...

0:20:43 > 0:20:45- You can change things.- Absolutely.

0:20:45 > 0:20:47That's what it's all about, as well.

0:20:47 > 0:20:50You know, we all do it, as designers.

0:20:50 > 0:20:53We come up with a new idea, we have to adapt something.

0:20:53 > 0:20:54To avoid disappointment,

0:20:54 > 0:20:56maybe that desk is a thing you need to focus on.

0:20:56 > 0:20:59And then, you can play games with the rest of it.

0:20:59 > 0:21:03The designers must be creative with their £1,000 budget.

0:21:03 > 0:21:08Artist Amy is upcycling a second-hand £50 ottoman

0:21:08 > 0:21:12with purple emulsion and charity shop offcuts.

0:21:12 > 0:21:14So, I got some beautiful, rich fabric swatches here,

0:21:14 > 0:21:17which I'm planning to make a really lovely

0:21:17 > 0:21:19patchwork for the top of the ottoman,

0:21:19 > 0:21:24bringing in the kind of Miami feel of the kind of palm leaves.

0:21:24 > 0:21:27And some of the richer purples and golds

0:21:27 > 0:21:29for the kind of Art Deco theme.

0:21:29 > 0:21:34It kind of brings in my sort of artistic side and just,

0:21:34 > 0:21:37you know, having fun with fabrics and colours

0:21:37 > 0:21:40and just really kind of going for it,

0:21:40 > 0:21:41not being too precious.

0:21:43 > 0:21:46Being creative is nothing new for Amy.

0:21:46 > 0:21:50Her home heaves under the weight of her artistic endeavours.

0:21:50 > 0:21:54The upcycling trend, it's really kind of grabbed my attention,

0:21:54 > 0:21:58cos it's looking at something old, or something quite cheap that

0:21:58 > 0:22:03you could really kind of renovate and make it really suit your home.

0:22:04 > 0:22:06This is my frame wall.

0:22:06 > 0:22:10It's quite an eclectic mix of vintage frames.

0:22:10 > 0:22:13Some of my own artwork there.

0:22:13 > 0:22:16And a decoupage mirror that I created.

0:22:17 > 0:22:21I really like kind of having that mixture of styles.

0:22:21 > 0:22:23Having that vintage, eclectic feel,

0:22:23 > 0:22:26with a Devon coastal feel.

0:22:26 > 0:22:29So you've got the new and the old mixing together.

0:22:29 > 0:22:33I kind of just have that ability to make them work together.

0:22:33 > 0:22:37And have the confidence to make them work, as well.

0:22:39 > 0:22:42Amy may be a confident designer,

0:22:42 > 0:22:45but her clients weren't sure about her purple and gold scheme.

0:22:47 > 0:22:49I'm just upcycling some old mirrors.

0:22:49 > 0:22:51Old mirror frames.

0:22:51 > 0:22:53I'm going to spray a few gold.

0:22:53 > 0:22:57So, I'm just about to kind of start on that, really.

0:23:00 > 0:23:03- Hello, Amy. Lots of frames painted already.- Yeah.

0:23:03 > 0:23:07Well, this is for the frame wall for the feature wall in the room.

0:23:07 > 0:23:11There is a little sort of nervousness from them about too much gold.

0:23:11 > 0:23:14- SOPHIE:- Yeah, I got that quite loud and clear.

0:23:14 > 0:23:17- It was quite loud.- That's the big message I'm hearing here.

0:23:17 > 0:23:19It's got to be lighter and brighter.

0:23:19 > 0:23:21Yes, we won't touch on that purple.

0:23:21 > 0:23:25I did think... I thought I'd try it.

0:23:25 > 0:23:27Which is a great idea,

0:23:27 > 0:23:29to try and push people in a direction you think

0:23:29 > 0:23:31they might not have explored before.

0:23:31 > 0:23:33I just don't think they...

0:23:33 > 0:23:35From what I was hearing, I don't think they want to go there.

0:23:35 > 0:23:38This boho chicness, fabulous as it is,

0:23:38 > 0:23:40we've got to just tweak it.

0:23:40 > 0:23:42Tweak it, yeah. I completely agree.

0:23:45 > 0:23:49Unlike Amy, Louise's emerald green and monochrome colour scheme

0:23:49 > 0:23:52was a big hit with her Art Deco adoring client.

0:23:55 > 0:23:57The green paint is looking so lovely.

0:23:57 > 0:23:59I'm just going to keep going

0:23:59 > 0:24:05until I sense that I've done enough green paint.

0:24:06 > 0:24:10Back in her own home, Louise also thinks bold is beautiful.

0:24:10 > 0:24:13I don't think people expect women to decorate in these very strong,

0:24:13 > 0:24:15masculine interiors.

0:24:15 > 0:24:18I definitely like really rich colours,

0:24:18 > 0:24:20kind of quite dark, quite dramatic.

0:24:20 > 0:24:22A little bit creepy.

0:24:22 > 0:24:24I think there's something quite lovely about bugs,

0:24:24 > 0:24:25and things like that.

0:24:26 > 0:24:30I definitely find it a very calming and enjoyable activity.

0:24:30 > 0:24:32I have no crafting skills.

0:24:32 > 0:24:37I like to think that I can do painting and upholstery,

0:24:37 > 0:24:39but I'm quite messy.

0:24:41 > 0:24:43I've got it everywhere already.

0:24:45 > 0:24:48But it's not just with the paintwork where the devil's in the detail.

0:24:48 > 0:24:52I can see signs of green.

0:24:52 > 0:24:54So, you've definitely been painting upstairs.

0:24:54 > 0:24:56Yes, there's lots of green going on in my room.

0:24:56 > 0:24:58Originally, it was just going to be one column

0:24:58 > 0:25:01and I've decided to paint all the walls green.

0:25:01 > 0:25:04- When you say we, was that you and Catherine?- Me.- Oh, just you? OK!

0:25:04 > 0:25:06How do you think the presentation went? Were you pleased with it?

0:25:06 > 0:25:08Well, yeah. I was, actually.

0:25:08 > 0:25:10I think the only thing that I was nervous about

0:25:10 > 0:25:12was the choice of fabric that I had picked out.

0:25:12 > 0:25:15I have to admit, that was my one nervous moment, was that fabric.

0:25:15 > 0:25:17Tell me why?

0:25:17 > 0:25:19Well, I admit that it is a Mackintosh,

0:25:19 > 0:25:20so it is slightly Arts and Crafts.

0:25:20 > 0:25:23- It's very Arts and Crafts. - I know, going into Art Deco.

0:25:23 > 0:25:26But I came prepared with loads of fabric samples,

0:25:26 > 0:25:29waiting for her to say, "Change the fabric." And she didn't.

0:25:29 > 0:25:32So, yeah.

0:25:33 > 0:25:37That fabric, it's not Art Deco, you know?

0:25:37 > 0:25:40- No.- Art Nouveau, maybe, on touches, but certainly not Deco.

0:25:40 > 0:25:43- And, for me, kind of a little bit old-fashioned.- Mmm.

0:25:48 > 0:25:51The '30s Art Deco movement was anything but old-fashioned

0:25:51 > 0:25:56and signalled a change in how some people lived their lives.

0:25:56 > 0:25:58As the middle classes swelled,

0:25:58 > 0:26:01many wanted to escape the crowded capital.

0:26:01 > 0:26:04Garden suburbs were designed to mix the best of a city

0:26:04 > 0:26:06with the countryside,

0:26:06 > 0:26:09so covenants here stipulated that each plot be no less than

0:26:09 > 0:26:11a quarter of an acre and be bordered not by fences,

0:26:11 > 0:26:16but by hedges, to maintain their leafy environment.

0:26:18 > 0:26:21These Art Deco houses might be on the same plots as their neighbours,

0:26:21 > 0:26:23but their sleek design contrasts with

0:26:23 > 0:26:28the surrounding 1930s semis, appealing to a new generation.

0:26:28 > 0:26:31Most British Art Deco homes were concentrated in the Midlands

0:26:31 > 0:26:34and the south-east, where new electrical and automotive

0:26:34 > 0:26:37industries were attracting young people with comfortable employment.

0:26:37 > 0:26:39Or they were built as coastal holiday homes,

0:26:39 > 0:26:44lending a touch of '30s glamour to the British seaside.

0:26:44 > 0:26:46But, there's no time for our designers to

0:26:46 > 0:26:49enjoy their suburban surroundings.

0:26:51 > 0:26:52It's already mid-afternoon

0:26:52 > 0:26:56and Amy's under pressure to rethink her original colour scheme.

0:26:57 > 0:26:59You're not painting any of the walls purple?

0:26:59 > 0:27:02I don't think they want any of the walls that deep purple.

0:27:02 > 0:27:06So, that's going to be now this sort of mint cream wall.

0:27:06 > 0:27:09I think it's really important to take on the judges' feedback, definitely.

0:27:09 > 0:27:12But it's cool. We've gone back to the lighter colours

0:27:12 > 0:27:14and it's going to work really well.

0:27:14 > 0:27:15But Amy is insistent there be

0:27:15 > 0:27:18at least one wall that sticks to her original design.

0:27:18 > 0:27:22We're kind of adding in a few of those deeper richer colours,

0:27:22 > 0:27:25like the pistachio, but just in small sections of the walls.

0:27:27 > 0:27:29As the end of the day approaches,

0:27:29 > 0:27:32Charmaine's builder has nearly finished making the pelmets -

0:27:32 > 0:27:34a wooden frame, which will be covered in fabric

0:27:34 > 0:27:37to hide the roller blind mechanism.

0:27:37 > 0:27:39But upholstering will have to wait.

0:27:39 > 0:27:41I'm feeling really nervous.

0:27:41 > 0:27:44There's been a huge mess up with my fabric and it hasn't arrived.

0:27:44 > 0:27:47So, the things I didn't want to have to do last-minute,

0:27:47 > 0:27:48I'm going to have to.

0:27:48 > 0:27:51And that is the sewing, the fabric and making it into the pelmet.

0:27:51 > 0:27:54I kind of tend to work better under pressure, but to be honest,

0:27:54 > 0:27:57I didn't want to have to do it like this at all.

0:27:58 > 0:28:01I haven't seen what the other contestants are doing.

0:28:01 > 0:28:04I've kind of being getting sneaky peeks over the top of the balcony,

0:28:04 > 0:28:07but I don't know if they're as stressed as I am.

0:28:07 > 0:28:09But I guess we'll soon see.

0:28:11 > 0:28:14But, there's little sign of stress over the fence,

0:28:14 > 0:28:18as Louise gets into the 1930s swing with a restorative break

0:28:18 > 0:28:20in the setting sun.

0:28:20 > 0:28:22I've painted a wall so far!

0:28:22 > 0:28:26That's the main job. Painted the wall, put the furniture in now.

0:28:26 > 0:28:28It's done.

0:28:28 > 0:28:30I feel that everything is under control.

0:28:30 > 0:28:32Although I don't really want to say that,

0:28:32 > 0:28:36cos I expect it's going to turn round to bite me.

0:28:40 > 0:28:43THUNDER RUMBLES

0:28:43 > 0:28:46Day two, and the British weather is demonstrating why

0:28:46 > 0:28:48the popularity of the sunroom waned.

0:28:52 > 0:28:54After yesterday's sunny sabbatical,

0:28:54 > 0:28:57Louise's spirits are suitably dampened.

0:28:57 > 0:29:00Rain is causing a bit of a problem,

0:29:00 > 0:29:03cos there's nowhere for us to do work outside.

0:29:03 > 0:29:06We need the bar to be built, so that I can actually paint it,

0:29:06 > 0:29:09and then we also need the decking laying.

0:29:09 > 0:29:11So, this is payback for me

0:29:11 > 0:29:15looking smug in the sun yesterday with a cup of tea.

0:29:15 > 0:29:17SHE LAUGHS

0:29:22 > 0:29:23SOPHIE: So, here we are on day two.

0:29:23 > 0:29:25The weather is not on anybody's side.

0:29:25 > 0:29:27It's absolutely bucketing it down,

0:29:27 > 0:29:29and that isn't going to help our designers.

0:29:29 > 0:29:32I know there was a lot of outside work planned for this morning,

0:29:32 > 0:29:34especially in Louise's project.

0:29:34 > 0:29:36All that decking and AstroTurf was scheduled to go down.

0:29:36 > 0:29:39I was picking up from yesterday that they were quite

0:29:39 > 0:29:42ahead of their time, it was all going to move quite nicely today.

0:29:42 > 0:29:44But it's not going to, is it? They're going to get held back.

0:29:44 > 0:29:48I'm still very concerned about Amy's design.

0:29:48 > 0:29:50And I'm really concerned for Sue and Rachel.

0:29:50 > 0:29:53I've just got a real sinking feeling that they're not going

0:29:53 > 0:29:55to like it, and that's not the game we're playing here.

0:29:55 > 0:29:57We want happy customers.

0:29:57 > 0:30:01Fortunately, Amy has taken on board Sophie's advice

0:30:01 > 0:30:04and finally seen the light.

0:30:05 > 0:30:11Basically, we put a pistachio on there late afternoon yesterday

0:30:11 > 0:30:14and kind of decided it was quite a muddy pistachio

0:30:14 > 0:30:19and actually quite a heavy colour so painting that right over

0:30:19 > 0:30:22and going for the cream and making it really light and beachy.

0:30:22 > 0:30:25It's purely just slight colour changes.

0:30:25 > 0:30:27When I say slight, quite dramatic colour changes

0:30:27 > 0:30:31but I think it's all going to work together quite well.

0:30:35 > 0:30:36Working to her

0:30:36 > 0:30:38clients' brief, Louise plans to

0:30:38 > 0:30:41create an Art Deco stencil to the bar.

0:30:41 > 0:30:43The pre-cut kit cost her £25.

0:30:45 > 0:30:48I am quite nervous about doing this

0:30:48 > 0:30:51because I've never really done stencilling before

0:30:51 > 0:30:54and I was hoping I was going to be able to put this off today.

0:30:54 > 0:30:58But it's raining so it's the perfect job to be doing inside.

0:30:58 > 0:30:59Unfortunately.

0:31:01 > 0:31:04When stencilling it's essential not to overload the brush to

0:31:04 > 0:31:06avoid paint seeping under the edges.

0:31:06 > 0:31:09Something Louise is struggling with.

0:31:09 > 0:31:12It's not going well at all.

0:31:12 > 0:31:16As you can this is my first attempt, the paint's totally bleeding

0:31:16 > 0:31:20but my hands are just so shaky.

0:31:20 > 0:31:24I'm just really pleased that this is on paper and not on the wall.

0:31:24 > 0:31:28Rubbish. What do you think?

0:31:28 > 0:31:30It's not bad for a first attempt.

0:31:30 > 0:31:33I don't want to do stencilling at all any more.

0:31:35 > 0:31:38Outside Charmaine is taking advantage of a break

0:31:38 > 0:31:41in the weather to restore one of the key pieces.

0:31:41 > 0:31:45I'm just about to make over this vintage chair that I've sourced.

0:31:45 > 0:31:47As you can see it's kind of rusty

0:31:47 > 0:31:50and I have a really great tip actually for getting rid of rust.

0:31:50 > 0:31:54If you just mix some sort of regular bicarbonate of soda with some

0:31:54 > 0:31:57water and make it into a paste.

0:31:58 > 0:32:03And then, once applied it should lift off all those

0:32:03 > 0:32:08lose bits of rust with a little bit of elbow grease, of course.

0:32:08 > 0:32:11For less than 50p of her £1,000 budget,

0:32:11 > 0:32:14the paste lifts the surface rust ready for painting.

0:32:15 > 0:32:19This tubular chair will be essential to her '50's theme, especially

0:32:19 > 0:32:21as she's decided to change her

0:32:21 > 0:32:23vintage desk for a glass alternative.

0:32:25 > 0:32:28The desk I was going to use I changed.

0:32:28 > 0:32:31This is what being a designer is all about.

0:32:32 > 0:32:35Being creative and thinking on your toes.

0:32:36 > 0:32:38Charmaine is trying hard

0:32:38 > 0:32:41to tie in all the elements of her design.

0:32:41 > 0:32:42Going to reupholster the arms

0:32:42 > 0:32:45in the same fabric as what's going on the pelmet.

0:32:45 > 0:32:47When it arrives.

0:32:47 > 0:32:51- What's the news with the pelmet?- We ordered it a few days ago but

0:32:51 > 0:32:54there's been a bit of miscommunication at the fabric

0:32:54 > 0:32:56company and it hasn't been dispatched

0:32:56 > 0:32:58so I'm now actually not getting it until...

0:32:58 > 0:33:00So it hasn't even been sent?

0:33:00 > 0:33:02I'm not getting it till tomorrow so it's going to

0:33:02 > 0:33:05be a bit of a push for me to sew that and upholster it.

0:33:05 > 0:33:10I noticed you started using that punchy green, which has to tie

0:33:10 > 0:33:13- in with the fabric.- To make sense of it all.- Exactly.

0:33:13 > 0:33:16I am struggling to see how these colours are going to come

0:33:16 > 0:33:18together without the fabric and actually,

0:33:18 > 0:33:21to make a wrap-around pelmet, that's time consuming.

0:33:21 > 0:33:23So I'm worried for her actually.

0:33:28 > 0:33:30These three sunrooms all

0:33:30 > 0:33:32vary in function and shape.

0:33:32 > 0:33:35So the judges want a yard stick to measure the designer's creativity.

0:33:35 > 0:33:39They've given them each an identical side table to up cycle

0:33:39 > 0:33:41so it's in keeping with their scheme.

0:33:46 > 0:33:51I found this lovely Art Deco-style mirror here

0:33:51 > 0:33:54and what we're going to do is stick the mirror

0:33:54 > 0:33:59- on top of the table.- Reflecting 1930s Hollywood, mirror was the

0:33:59 > 0:34:02material du jour of the Art Deco period and

0:34:02 > 0:34:04is proving popular with our designers.

0:34:04 > 0:34:08I've actually had a lovely piece of mirror cut to the same size

0:34:08 > 0:34:12so I'm going to change this piece and put my own piece on there

0:34:12 > 0:34:15and I'm going to be spray painting this a chrome colour.

0:34:15 > 0:34:18I don't know if there's a lot of craft going into my up

0:34:18 > 0:34:21cycling challenge so I hope that doesn't go against me.

0:34:21 > 0:34:25While Louise and Charmaine have opted for quick fixes, Amy is

0:34:25 > 0:34:29cutting into her schedule but not her budget with an artistic project.

0:34:29 > 0:34:31For the upcycle project

0:34:31 > 0:34:39I'm creating a decoupage of some pretty iconic Art Deco images

0:34:39 > 0:34:43and some beautiful wallpapers and patterns.

0:34:44 > 0:34:48So the first thing to do is to whack on your PVA.

0:34:49 > 0:34:53Spread it on nice and sort of thickly for that first layer

0:34:53 > 0:34:55just to get a bit of texture.

0:34:58 > 0:35:02Right on to the corner. Line that right up...

0:35:03 > 0:35:08- Whack the PVA right over the top. - The traditional technique of

0:35:08 > 0:35:12decoupage uses upward of 30 layers of varnish.

0:35:12 > 0:35:16But with limited time a good glug of PVA glue will do the same job.

0:35:16 > 0:35:19So this PVA will obviously dry completely clear.

0:35:21 > 0:35:25Of course, Amy can't resist a little of her favourite colour.

0:35:25 > 0:35:29I'm basically using this really fine gold powder

0:35:29 > 0:35:31instead of the gold leaf stuff.

0:35:31 > 0:35:35I can kind of control it a bit more as in it's not going to be as heavy

0:35:35 > 0:35:36as gold leaf.

0:35:36 > 0:35:40Still on the clients' no-go list, the gold might be a gamble.

0:35:40 > 0:35:43But the rest of Amy's room now sticks to the clients' brief.

0:35:45 > 0:35:47These colours are much more, for me,

0:35:47 > 0:35:50Miami beach house than the purples and the golds

0:35:50 > 0:35:53and pistachio which was quite a muddy green.

0:35:53 > 0:35:57- Yes.- We talked about ice cream shades. Are you finding this

0:35:57 > 0:35:58brief really hard?

0:35:58 > 0:36:01I'm not finding it hard, just conflicting.

0:36:01 > 0:36:03In my heart I would have loved to have

0:36:03 > 0:36:06gone for the complete beach hut style,

0:36:06 > 0:36:08you know? I'm from Devon, I love the beach

0:36:08 > 0:36:11that's why I brought all the drift wood up with me.

0:36:11 > 0:36:13That's a different beach. The only driftwood in Miami are

0:36:13 > 0:36:16people who have fallen out of casinos, you know?

0:36:16 > 0:36:20But I'm getting you want to put in that boho chic into here.

0:36:20 > 0:36:23I think that's my flair

0:36:23 > 0:36:26and I think that's always going to come into something.

0:36:28 > 0:36:30She's got some great ideas, she's very creative

0:36:30 > 0:36:32and I wouldn't want her creativity to be quelled.

0:36:32 > 0:36:34She just doesn't understand the rules

0:36:34 > 0:36:36so I suppose that's where,

0:36:36 > 0:36:39for me, I'm just not sure how this is going to work out.

0:36:39 > 0:36:41She might just pull it off. You never know.

0:36:44 > 0:36:47Amy's quirky style might be a gamble,

0:36:47 > 0:36:48but she's in good company.

0:36:48 > 0:36:51Even the original designers of these homes were stepping

0:36:51 > 0:36:54out of the suburban comfort zone.

0:36:54 > 0:36:56Architects knew they were taking risks with their modern

0:36:56 > 0:37:00designs so hedged their bets to accommodate more restrained tastes.

0:37:00 > 0:37:03One 1934 catalogue claimed

0:37:03 > 0:37:06this house can also be a erected in red brick with a pitched

0:37:06 > 0:37:11roof without detriment to the plans and with equally pleasing results.

0:37:12 > 0:37:15It's the little details that make Art Deco so desirable today.

0:37:15 > 0:37:19Like the little keystone detail up there on the parapet.

0:37:19 > 0:37:23That kind of jazz, Aztec style that was all the rage in the 1930s.

0:37:23 > 0:37:26I love the porch, cut away in a triangular shape,

0:37:26 > 0:37:29almost like a status symbol to show off how much space

0:37:29 > 0:37:32they could waste on a porch like that.

0:37:32 > 0:37:36All these houses are built with white painted concrete or

0:37:36 > 0:37:40snowcrete, designed to reflect the sun and keep it cool inside, though,

0:37:40 > 0:37:43of course, in coal-powered 1930s Britain

0:37:43 > 0:37:45it went a fetching shade of grey.

0:37:45 > 0:37:47They still have to be painted every two years to keep it looking

0:37:47 > 0:37:50pristine.

0:37:50 > 0:37:53Inside, however, the white walls have been replaced with

0:37:53 > 0:37:55mint green, punchy limes and bold emerald.

0:37:57 > 0:38:00But there's still so much to do as tomorrow the judges will

0:38:00 > 0:38:03decide which designer shows the most potential to go through to the

0:38:03 > 0:38:04next round.

0:38:04 > 0:38:07Charmaine is using click-together plastic decking at

0:38:07 > 0:38:09£12 per square metre.

0:38:09 > 0:38:12But worried about her budget, she makes a decision.

0:38:14 > 0:38:17If I stop my decking there I've got £15

0:38:17 > 0:38:21more budget to play with there so I can get me some plants.

0:38:21 > 0:38:26Amy meanwhile is up cycling furniture with her trademark colour.

0:38:26 > 0:38:32Adding a little gold back in as it was too heavy with that purple.

0:38:35 > 0:38:39And Louise is painting her Art Deco style cocktail bar in glossy

0:38:39 > 0:38:43black, imitating 1930s fashion for dark lacquer.

0:38:45 > 0:38:47Obviously now we're into the last few hours

0:38:47 > 0:38:50so I just need to make sure that any jobs that do need doing,

0:38:50 > 0:38:53we just keep doing, one after the other and there's no kind of hanging

0:38:53 > 0:38:55around with nothing to do.

0:38:55 > 0:38:58Aware of time and budget, Louise has bought

0:38:58 > 0:39:02some furniture online, such as her £75 drinks cabinet.

0:39:03 > 0:39:07- Love it. Just fits lovely in that space.- Perfect.- Really nice.

0:39:11 > 0:39:13As the sun starts to set,

0:39:13 > 0:39:16Charmaine's pelmet fabric still hasn't arrived.

0:39:16 > 0:39:19Thankfully she does have the fabric to make her retro cushions.

0:39:22 > 0:39:25That's finished, I'm just going to trim off the excess fabric,

0:39:25 > 0:39:28take the pins out and then put a cushion in and it's done.

0:39:33 > 0:39:35Quick tip, if you want to get your corners nice and sharp

0:39:35 > 0:39:37when you turn it inside out,

0:39:37 > 0:39:42what you want to do is cut across the point on the opposite side

0:39:42 > 0:39:45and you'll see when we turn that inside out its nice and sharp.

0:39:47 > 0:39:51All you need to do is just get a pin and literally pop those out

0:39:51 > 0:39:53and you get those lovely sharp corners.

0:39:55 > 0:39:57And that's it, the cushion is finished.

0:40:10 > 0:40:14The day has finally come when our designers will finish up and the

0:40:14 > 0:40:16homeowners will get to see their rooms.

0:40:16 > 0:40:18The judges will take their views into account

0:40:18 > 0:40:21when deciding who to send through to the quarterfinals.

0:40:27 > 0:40:29I nerved with fears of failure.

0:40:29 > 0:40:31Yes.

0:40:33 > 0:40:34As the designers arrive,

0:40:34 > 0:40:39one is particularly happy to see a last-minute delivery of fabric.

0:40:39 > 0:40:45Oh, my God. It's here. Thank goodness for that.

0:40:45 > 0:40:49Right, Stuart, we can get on with our pelmets.

0:40:49 > 0:40:52- I'm going to get cracking with that now, OK?- Now the challenge is on,

0:40:52 > 0:40:56not only to finish on time but to pad and upholster the pelmets

0:40:56 > 0:40:59to a standard that will impress the judges.

0:40:59 > 0:41:02I hate this under pressure.

0:41:02 > 0:41:04With just a few hours to go,

0:41:04 > 0:41:06Amy's patchwork for the ottoman has hit a snag.

0:41:06 > 0:41:09All I need to do is get the bobbing threaded.

0:41:09 > 0:41:13I don't know if you know how to do that. That all I...

0:41:13 > 0:41:17- That's all I need.- Luckily her client comes to the rescue.

0:41:18 > 0:41:22It's working now so we should be OK.

0:41:25 > 0:41:28In Louise's room the cocktail bar

0:41:28 > 0:41:30is being built, but she's dropped

0:41:30 > 0:41:32some elements of her original design.

0:41:32 > 0:41:35There's a few things we had to leave off.

0:41:35 > 0:41:37We've not had a chance to do the stencilling.

0:41:37 > 0:41:40Which is a shame because that would look quite good

0:41:40 > 0:41:42just there but I think the bar looks great anyway.

0:41:42 > 0:41:44Wish we got a bit more

0:41:44 > 0:41:48- but it's still fine.- Running out of time on the tricky stencilling

0:41:48 > 0:41:50means she's wasted

0:41:50 > 0:41:52the £25 they cost.

0:41:52 > 0:41:55But there's still more to do.

0:41:55 > 0:41:58Ah! Where are we?

0:41:59 > 0:42:06- I want this one clean.- I'll get some sandpaper.- So that is that one.

0:42:08 > 0:42:11All three designers are working up to the wire.

0:42:11 > 0:42:14Louise still needs to update a Victorian side table

0:42:14 > 0:42:16she bought for £20.

0:42:16 > 0:42:18I realised last night that I haven't actually done anything with

0:42:18 > 0:42:20this table.

0:42:20 > 0:42:23What I want to do with it is just to kind of Art Deco it up

0:42:23 > 0:42:27- a little bit.- She's giving it a monochrome look with black

0:42:27 > 0:42:30emulsion picking out the angular edges.

0:42:30 > 0:42:33But in the rush to get things finished,

0:42:33 > 0:42:34the finish is being rushed.

0:42:34 > 0:42:37Right, I am getting a little bit flustered this morning.

0:42:37 > 0:42:41I've gone over the edges. It's not looking good.

0:42:43 > 0:42:44See what I've done there.

0:42:44 > 0:42:46It's all over the place.

0:42:48 > 0:42:50Finally, Charmaine's pelmets go up

0:42:50 > 0:42:54and the new glass desk arrives but there's a problem.

0:42:54 > 0:42:57It is way too low.

0:42:57 > 0:43:02It's way smaller than the other one. My goodness.

0:43:02 > 0:43:05But with the help of two £5 trestle table legs,

0:43:05 > 0:43:07Charmaine is back on track.

0:43:10 > 0:43:14A bit pressed for time now but we knew it...

0:43:19 > 0:43:21Amy is adding her finishing touches.

0:43:21 > 0:43:24That's perfect. Some martini glasses and some liquor.

0:43:24 > 0:43:27And finally the second-hand bar that she bought for less

0:43:27 > 0:43:30than £50 takes centre stage.

0:43:36 > 0:43:39With only £1,000 and just under three days,

0:43:39 > 0:43:42the amateur designers have completely transformed these

0:43:42 > 0:43:44sunrooms and terraces.

0:43:46 > 0:43:48Oh, my God.

0:43:52 > 0:43:55First up for the judges' scrutiny is Louise's design.

0:43:56 > 0:43:59Her vision was to create a cocktail lounge

0:43:59 > 0:44:01with an Art Deco style and colours.

0:44:03 > 0:44:06Three days ago this room was all but abandoned,

0:44:06 > 0:44:08housing old home office furniture and files.

0:44:23 > 0:44:24Now it's been transformed

0:44:24 > 0:44:28into a grown-up room with purpose in Art Deco green and monochrome.

0:44:29 > 0:44:32She's built a bar as a central feature and has brought

0:44:32 > 0:44:35period pieces of furniture to stand alongside.

0:44:38 > 0:44:40She was able to bring in chairs from other rooms

0:44:40 > 0:44:43but accessorised with home-made cushions.

0:44:45 > 0:44:48Outside she stretched her budget to include black decking

0:44:48 > 0:44:52and green artificial grass continuing the colour scheme.

0:45:00 > 0:45:02- Martini, Dan?- Oh, as always...

0:45:04 > 0:45:07I have to say I'm loving that green, it's fantastic, isn't it?

0:45:07 > 0:45:09It's a good, well-picked colour.

0:45:09 > 0:45:12I really love the bar and this is very much what Catherine

0:45:12 > 0:45:14and Roy were looking for, wasn't it?

0:45:14 > 0:45:16One thing that I'm really disappointed not to see is

0:45:16 > 0:45:18the stencilling on the front of here which

0:45:18 > 0:45:20I was really looking forward to seeing actually.

0:45:20 > 0:45:23Yeah. It would have pulled the black into that nicely.

0:45:23 > 0:45:26This is the table that I gave the challenge to customise and

0:45:26 > 0:45:29she's bought a very nice mirror, you know,

0:45:29 > 0:45:31picking up with the Deco design again, isn't it?

0:45:31 > 0:45:33That's as far as it goes for me.

0:45:33 > 0:45:35It is a mirror on top of a table base.

0:45:35 > 0:45:38You're not a cushion man, are you?

0:45:38 > 0:45:40I like a cushion. We did feel that was a bit too...

0:45:40 > 0:45:42I don't get that. Well, it's Mackintosh, isn't it?

0:45:42 > 0:45:45Yes and it's very curly and floral, isn't it?

0:45:45 > 0:45:46A bit feminine.

0:45:46 > 0:45:49I just don't understand why she's put Victorian kitchen furniture here.

0:45:49 > 0:45:51Is that what it is?

0:45:51 > 0:45:54Yes. Yes, it is. It's Victorian turned legs painted black and white.

0:45:54 > 0:45:56- Shall we have a look outside?- Yeah.

0:45:58 > 0:46:01I'm loving this idea of the black flooring.

0:46:01 > 0:46:04Again, we've got the black and the green, tying in with the black

0:46:04 > 0:46:06and the green inside, which is a great idea.

0:46:06 > 0:46:08I think that's actually really clever.

0:46:13 > 0:46:17How well they fulfilled the clients' brief is a key criteria on which

0:46:17 > 0:46:19the amateur designers will be judged.

0:46:19 > 0:46:22This will be the first time that Catherine will have seen her

0:46:22 > 0:46:24room since it was finished.

0:46:25 > 0:46:27Oh, wow.

0:46:27 > 0:46:31Gosh, isn't it different? It feels really big.

0:46:31 > 0:46:33You could go out on dates up here?

0:46:34 > 0:46:35I love the contrast,

0:46:35 > 0:46:38the black with the emerald green with the wallpaper.

0:46:38 > 0:46:41It's very Deco. Really like that.

0:46:41 > 0:46:45The cabinet could have been made for that space really.

0:46:45 > 0:46:47It's not particularly Art Deco as I would see it

0:46:47 > 0:46:49but it fits the space

0:46:49 > 0:46:51and it's got the functionality of the

0:46:51 > 0:46:53- storage, which is what we were after.- Yeah.

0:46:59 > 0:47:03Next is Charmaine's design for a 1950s inspired home office.

0:47:06 > 0:47:08This room was impractical and chaotic,

0:47:08 > 0:47:11a dumping ground for suitcases and general clutter...

0:47:23 > 0:47:27Now it's a stylish study with a dose of retro elegance.

0:47:29 > 0:47:33Charmaine's added a desk made of glass to give the illusion of space.

0:47:35 > 0:47:37And delivered practical storage.

0:47:41 > 0:47:44Functional blinds have been hung around the whole room,

0:47:44 > 0:47:48trimmed with 1950s style fabric, tying in with the chair detail.

0:47:50 > 0:47:53Outside she's kept changes minimal, cleaning up the tiles

0:47:53 > 0:47:56and creating a low-maintenance seating area.

0:47:59 > 0:48:00Oh, yes.

0:48:02 > 0:48:07- It's fantastic.- This has all come together at the end, hasn't it?

0:48:07 > 0:48:09- Yes. - It's a really poppy, bright colour.

0:48:09 > 0:48:12Nearly sliced my head off with that damn thing.

0:48:12 > 0:48:14- Don't know what she did that for.- No.

0:48:14 > 0:48:17I'm OK but Nigel might bump his head.

0:48:17 > 0:48:22And actually all it needed was a little extension, little hook

0:48:22 > 0:48:24and then it could have lit his desk for him.

0:48:24 > 0:48:29- Table looks good.- I'm so glad she went for the glass cos hasn't that

0:48:29 > 0:48:33really lifted this whole area and it feels twice the size, doesn't it?

0:48:33 > 0:48:36It's just trestle table with a glass top. It's great.

0:48:37 > 0:48:40She has managed in her budget to get blinds all the way around.

0:48:40 > 0:48:44The attention to detail is gorgeous. If you went to a

0:48:44 > 0:48:46curtain-maker they would charge you a complete bomb for this.

0:48:46 > 0:48:49What I like is the fact that the pelmet is patterned

0:48:49 > 0:48:53and it does drag your eye right round, right round and it's

0:48:53 > 0:48:57actually making me feel that this space is bigger than it actually is.

0:48:57 > 0:48:58That's rather clever.

0:48:58 > 0:49:00- I think we should have a look outside.- OK.

0:49:01 > 0:49:05- There you go. That bloody light. - Yeah, that's not good.

0:49:05 > 0:49:07A point gone on that light.

0:49:08 > 0:49:12- She's not a garden designer then. - No.- What happened here?

0:49:12 > 0:49:14I'm loving that but...

0:49:14 > 0:49:17- Don't get it.- This is the table. She sprayed the legs silver.- Yeah.

0:49:17 > 0:49:19Mirror was set inside.

0:49:19 > 0:49:23I love that in there so I'm just going to focus on that for a second.

0:49:23 > 0:49:25Keep looking in that direction and she will do very well.

0:49:25 > 0:49:27I can see it from here.

0:49:34 > 0:49:41- OK.- Found your guitar.- It's just a shame I can't play it.

0:49:43 > 0:49:48It's not too much either because at the end of the day if you're

0:49:48 > 0:49:51going to use it as an office it's no good having it so wild that

0:49:51 > 0:49:53you end up with a headache.

0:49:54 > 0:49:57It's a happy room. I think you're going to enjoy it.

0:49:57 > 0:50:00I love this desk. I love this pelmet.

0:50:00 > 0:50:03It's very cleaver because it's hidden.

0:50:03 > 0:50:06- It works really well, doesn't it? - Want to have a look outside?

0:50:08 > 0:50:12I like the idea of this decking because you can wash it down.

0:50:12 > 0:50:14It links in nicely with the inside as well.

0:50:14 > 0:50:15It does.

0:50:18 > 0:50:21Finally the judges assess Amy's design.

0:50:22 > 0:50:26Her take on the Miami beach hut vibe married a coastal feel with

0:50:26 > 0:50:28Art Deco flourishes.

0:50:30 > 0:50:33Three days ago this modern extension was an uninspiring room with

0:50:33 > 0:50:35little purpose.

0:50:47 > 0:50:50Now it's a room designed for entertaining.

0:50:52 > 0:50:54Amy adapted her original colour scheme to use

0:50:54 > 0:50:57a pallet of summery sorbet shades.

0:51:00 > 0:51:01While she stuck to her guns

0:51:01 > 0:51:05using touches of purple and gold on unique upcycled furniture.

0:51:08 > 0:51:11She's used driftwood, palm wallpaper

0:51:11 > 0:51:17and retro glassware to transport the room to 1930s Miami beach.

0:51:21 > 0:51:25- Wow!- Oh...it's fun.

0:51:26 > 0:51:29- It's eclectic.- It is eclectic.

0:51:29 > 0:51:30That is quite a look.

0:51:30 > 0:51:34We've seen that sort of look before that sort of collecting things and putting them

0:51:34 > 0:51:38together and I think it's rather fun and it is beachy and relaxed.

0:51:38 > 0:51:40She's got a really good eye for composition.

0:51:40 > 0:51:42There's lots of different shapes

0:51:42 > 0:51:45and it's a big enough collection to hold that wall.

0:51:45 > 0:51:47Yes, it's almost like an oval, isn't it?

0:51:47 > 0:51:49- But Deco it is not.- No.

0:51:50 > 0:51:54The little beach wood shelf is sweet and the bar at the back is good.

0:51:54 > 0:51:58Their old sofa fits in quite well. Can I just do this?

0:51:58 > 0:52:00I can't bear to see the labels.

0:52:00 > 0:52:03It's so wrong. Apart from that, lovely.

0:52:03 > 0:52:07Her dressing is very nice. In terms of styling it feels very homely in here.

0:52:07 > 0:52:09It's like you're ready to go.

0:52:09 > 0:52:15She's got a nice taste for nice quirky things. Quite boho.

0:52:15 > 0:52:19It's just not what the brief was so I'm not sure what Rachael

0:52:19 > 0:52:21and Susan are going to make of it.

0:52:25 > 0:52:32- Hello! What do you make of your new room?- I like it. I like the colours.

0:52:32 > 0:52:35- I like the green. - I'm glad we went with the bar.

0:52:35 > 0:52:37I think there's a bit too much in here.

0:52:37 > 0:52:39I'd probably take some items out.

0:52:39 > 0:52:42Just to give it a less cluttered feel.

0:52:42 > 0:52:45But the actual items themselves I quite like.

0:52:45 > 0:52:47The bar looks great, actually.

0:52:47 > 0:52:50Her inspiration came much more from hotels and bars rather than

0:52:50 > 0:52:54the idea I had about creating the ambience of a beach hut.

0:52:54 > 0:52:57But having said that, I really like the shelves. That works really well.

0:52:57 > 0:53:02I like the way that created a beachy feel to the room. So I'm not

0:53:02 > 0:53:03overly disappointed.

0:53:08 > 0:53:10The judges have seen the rooms.

0:53:10 > 0:53:13Now they have to decide which designer to put through to the

0:53:13 > 0:53:14next round.

0:53:15 > 0:53:18We didn't have time to do the stencil on the bar

0:53:18 > 0:53:21and the paintwork could have been neater, things like that.

0:53:21 > 0:53:25But the majority of stuff is in place and I think

0:53:25 > 0:53:27it looks good so I'm pleased with that.

0:53:27 > 0:53:29I think I'm in with a good chance.

0:53:29 > 0:53:31Praying I'm in with a good chance.

0:53:31 > 0:53:34Whether or not it's enough to get me through to the next round,

0:53:34 > 0:53:35I don't know.

0:53:35 > 0:53:38To be quite honest, I don't think I could have done better

0:53:38 > 0:53:41in the time. I got everything done and yeah, I really enjoyed it.

0:53:43 > 0:53:45So, judges, any highlights, any disasters?

0:53:45 > 0:53:48It's been a little bit of a roller coaster, actually.

0:53:48 > 0:53:50I think it's been a real challenge for our designers.

0:53:50 > 0:53:52It's an unusual brief, isn't it?

0:53:52 > 0:53:54Did the designers rise to the occasion?

0:53:54 > 0:53:56Let's start with Charmaine. How did she do?

0:53:56 > 0:54:00Her clients didn't want Art Deco, they wanted a

0:54:00 > 0:54:03'50's retro look and she did achieve that.

0:54:03 > 0:54:07I mean, she definitely didn't have them on board in the beginning

0:54:07 > 0:54:10and clients are allowed to change their mind as well along the way

0:54:10 > 0:54:11and you have to change with them.

0:54:11 > 0:54:14And she did and I have to say I really commend her for that.

0:54:14 > 0:54:16She turned it around very well.

0:54:16 > 0:54:18But Charmaine's garden really let her down.

0:54:18 > 0:54:21But that interior was just stunning.

0:54:21 > 0:54:25- How about Louise?- She's a talented designer. We've seen that, though.

0:54:25 > 0:54:29She had such confidence and a stylish interior.

0:54:29 > 0:54:31She picked this perfect emerald green.

0:54:31 > 0:54:34So Deco and yet so now as well.

0:54:34 > 0:54:39But then she messed wildly on the details. Her clients take their

0:54:39 > 0:54:42Art Deco very seriously so the bar was high

0:54:42 > 0:54:44and in that respect it was very challenging.

0:54:44 > 0:54:47I mean there was a Victorian table painted in black and white.

0:54:47 > 0:54:51She was like, she had one fantastic idea that's going along and

0:54:51 > 0:54:54when you looked one way towards the room, towards the bar,

0:54:54 > 0:54:57it was sleek and streamline and everything you expect Deco to

0:54:57 > 0:55:00be, but then you turned around and it just fell to pieces.

0:55:00 > 0:55:04Amy had a very different challenge because that room was enclosed,

0:55:04 > 0:55:07it wasn't really as light filled as the other two.

0:55:07 > 0:55:09No, it's not much of a sunroom really, is it?

0:55:09 > 0:55:11It's just like an extra room on top.

0:55:11 > 0:55:15They wanted that place to be a sort of fun cocktail bar.

0:55:15 > 0:55:18Some confusion with the style I think, wasn't there, Sophie?

0:55:18 > 0:55:21Some? Huge confusion with style.

0:55:21 > 0:55:27The brief was Art Deco Miami and she went boudoir, vintage,

0:55:27 > 0:55:28car boot sale, flea market chic.

0:55:28 > 0:55:32I sort of liked Amy and I liked her style and I thought her style

0:55:32 > 0:55:36was very cohesive and she got her clients on board.

0:55:36 > 0:55:38So where are you too headed in your thinking?

0:55:38 > 0:55:41I think going forward we've really got to look at who shows

0:55:41 > 0:55:43the most promise.

0:55:43 > 0:55:46Sound like you two have got a bit more thinking to do.

0:55:46 > 0:55:48They're pretty close together, aren't they?

0:55:48 > 0:55:50Very close, yes. Very close.

0:55:57 > 0:56:01So, designers, it's a tough gig working to your first proper

0:56:01 > 0:56:03brief but you've all grasped the nettle I think.

0:56:03 > 0:56:08- Yes.- I mean, from my point of view, I think Art Deco sunroom,

0:56:08 > 0:56:10you know, it's very unusual.

0:56:10 > 0:56:14But I think you all took it on and we're really impressed with

0:56:14 > 0:56:15all of you. So, well done.

0:56:17 > 0:56:20These two have been wrestling, they've been fighting it out,

0:56:20 > 0:56:22it's been a really tough decision.

0:56:22 > 0:56:26But they have come to a decision about which designer shows

0:56:26 > 0:56:30the most potential to go through to the next round.

0:56:30 > 0:56:31And that designer is...

0:56:33 > 0:56:34Charmaine.

0:56:34 > 0:56:36Ah!

0:56:41 > 0:56:45It came down to the details and while we liked Louise's

0:56:45 > 0:56:48bigger picture, she really fell at the last hurdle.

0:56:48 > 0:56:50And Charmaine did swing it.

0:56:50 > 0:56:54We just felt her scheme was tighter and more cohesive.

0:56:54 > 0:56:57That room's ready to be photographed and put in a magazine.

0:56:57 > 0:57:00It as such a beautiful, elegant piece of work.

0:57:00 > 0:57:02It was all there, thoroughly thought through

0:57:02 > 0:57:04and also it's a big surprise.

0:57:06 > 0:57:10One thing I've enjoyed is I've never hated doing this room.

0:57:10 > 0:57:12I've absolutely loved every second of it,

0:57:12 > 0:57:14it's not put me off doing another room.

0:57:14 > 0:57:17I'll probably go home and decorate to unwind.

0:57:17 > 0:57:19Congratulations.

0:57:21 > 0:57:24With interior design I want to see where I go with it.

0:57:24 > 0:57:28Keep experimenting and you never know where this may lead, so yeah.

0:57:30 > 0:57:35I'm so, so happy especially because of all the doubts

0:57:35 > 0:57:39and the delays and things that I've had, I'm just so happy to have won.

0:57:39 > 0:57:41This is definitely the next step towards my dream.

0:57:41 > 0:57:43I'm just going to keep climbing.

0:57:45 > 0:57:49The spirit of Art Deco is futuristic and even though it has

0:57:49 > 0:57:52passed into design history, its clean white lines

0:57:52 > 0:57:53still feel refreshing

0:57:53 > 0:57:56compared to stuffy old middle England.

0:57:56 > 0:58:00But this week's winner didn't just slavishly treat it as a piece of

0:58:00 > 0:58:04vintage style from the past, she was true to that spirit.

0:58:04 > 0:58:07She created something fresh, functional and contemporary.

0:58:08 > 0:58:12Next time three living rooms in a London warehouse conversion.

0:58:12 > 0:58:15- It's delightful space.- It's like being on a ship, isn't it?

0:58:15 > 0:58:18But there's some resistance to change.

0:58:18 > 0:58:19It's very nice but it's not me.

0:58:19 > 0:58:22I have a major problem with the wallpaper.
