0:00:14 > 0:00:16we don't always make the best of the rooms we live in.

0:00:20 > 0:00:23So we're asking 24 amateur designers, who believe

0:00:23 > 0:00:26they've got what it takes to be the next big thing in interiors,

0:00:26 > 0:00:28to show us how it should be done.

0:00:30 > 0:00:33We'll travel across the country and through the ages

0:00:33 > 0:00:38to Victorian avenues, Art Deco cul-de-sacs and Regency squares.

0:00:41 > 0:00:44Each time, three would-be designers take on similar rooms

0:00:44 > 0:00:45in three neighbouring homes.

0:01:06 > 0:01:09The really great designers have a level of flexibility

0:01:09 > 0:01:13and they can work round a client and yet give them a lot of style.

0:01:13 > 0:01:17..and interior stylist and magazine journalist, Sophie Robinson.

0:01:17 > 0:01:19What I'm looking for in this competition

0:01:19 > 0:01:23is designers who have a high level of creativity.

0:01:23 > 0:01:24Now it's their imaginations

0:01:24 > 0:01:27and design skills that'll determine who'll come out on top.

0:01:37 > 0:01:40This time, our amateurs are redesigning one room each

0:01:40 > 0:01:44in three Georgian almshouses built in the mid-1700s.

0:01:44 > 0:01:47Each of our designers will be working on a living room

0:01:47 > 0:01:49to very different briefs.

0:01:49 > 0:01:50We are running behind, yet again.

0:01:50 > 0:01:53I think there are things that I know are problematic.

0:01:53 > 0:01:54It will be up to the judges

0:01:54 > 0:01:57to decide who will go through to the next round.

0:01:57 > 0:02:01God, that sideboard painted looks like an old sideboard painted!

0:02:01 > 0:02:04She shouldn't have lost that battle, in my opinion.

0:02:05 > 0:02:08The designer going through to the quarterfinals is...

0:02:18 > 0:02:20I'm in the heart of Southwark in south-east London.

0:02:20 > 0:02:22In the early 18th century,

0:02:22 > 0:02:24all this would have been marsh lands and gardens.

0:02:24 > 0:02:27And the only real landmark would have been St Paul's Cathedral,

0:02:27 > 0:02:29just across the Thames.

0:02:29 > 0:02:32Now it's dwarfed by all these modern buildings.

0:02:32 > 0:02:34London's a constantly evolving city.

0:02:34 > 0:02:38There are buildings going up all the time, as you can hear.

0:02:38 > 0:02:42But there is a little survivor, tucked away just over there.

0:02:53 > 0:02:55These are Hopton's Almshouses.

0:02:55 > 0:02:58In the 18th century, it was a fashion for rich men

0:02:58 > 0:03:02to secure their place in Heaven through generous acts of charity.

0:03:02 > 0:03:06In 1742, this patch of land was purchased with trust money

0:03:06 > 0:03:08left by wealthy benefactor Charles Hopton

0:03:08 > 0:03:12with the express aim of housing poor, decayed men of the parish.

0:03:13 > 0:03:17The original residents were retired watermen, gardeners and fishermen -

0:03:17 > 0:03:21the kind of people who once worked on the Thames, just over there.

0:03:27 > 0:03:29Today, the Almshouses are still run as a charity.

0:03:32 > 0:03:35Now, three are getting a new-look living room

0:03:35 > 0:03:36from our amateur designers.

0:03:39 > 0:03:43'So I think that would be great - to transform someone's space,

0:03:43 > 0:03:45'and them actually really love it.

0:03:45 > 0:03:48'I think my style is quite quirky.'

0:03:49 > 0:03:54In a way, I'm seeing it as, like, updated granny chic.

0:03:54 > 0:03:59'A career in interior design would just be a dream come true, really.'

0:04:00 > 0:04:04I would say my style is contemporary and sumptuous,

0:04:04 > 0:04:06cosy, but a space that you can really live in.

0:04:09 > 0:04:10'It is interiors'

0:04:10 > 0:04:13that really makes me tick. And to be able to have

0:04:13 > 0:04:18that as a profession, for me, that would be the ultimate dream.

0:04:18 > 0:04:22I'd say my style was eclectic. Going against the grain is so important.

0:04:24 > 0:04:27They'll be working for their first-ever clients.

0:04:27 > 0:04:31Each designer will have £1,000 and 48 hours spread over three days

0:04:31 > 0:04:33to transform their room.

0:04:38 > 0:04:41The first sitting room is in an apartment on the upper floor,

0:04:41 > 0:04:44lived in by cycling fanatic Nigel

0:04:44 > 0:04:46who, after a long stretch of homelessness,

0:04:46 > 0:04:48moved here three years ago.

0:04:50 > 0:04:54Having a home is basically what it was all about for me,

0:04:54 > 0:04:57somewhere I could call home at last.

0:04:57 > 0:04:59Nigel works as a bicycle mechanic.

0:04:59 > 0:05:02He wants his room to be dual purpose -

0:05:02 > 0:05:05part bike workshop, part living room.

0:05:05 > 0:05:07I just want to make it more like home.

0:05:07 > 0:05:12I want this place to be a living room that's lived in and loved.

0:05:12 > 0:05:16And at the moment, I think the room lacks a bit of love.

0:05:16 > 0:05:19Judges Sophie and Daniel need to see the room's potential

0:05:19 > 0:05:21before the designer gets started.

0:05:26 > 0:05:28Loads of stuff in here, isn't there?

0:05:28 > 0:05:31I mean, I can't imagine, as a living space, this is terribly relaxing.

0:05:31 > 0:05:34The room hasn't been designed for the purpose in any way, has it?

0:05:34 > 0:05:38- No, but it's a tiny room.- Clearly, something's been boxed in here.

0:05:38 > 0:05:39Big lump of an old fireplace.

0:05:39 > 0:05:42On this floor, this would have just had a tiny little fireplace

0:05:42 > 0:05:46where you brought the cinders up in a big pan and dropped them

0:05:46 > 0:05:49into a little grate at the front. You probably see them in bedrooms.

0:05:49 > 0:05:53You never had a fire. You just had this old sort of cinder glow.

0:05:53 > 0:05:56But there is one charming original feature.

0:05:56 > 0:05:59We have the original sash windows.

0:05:59 > 0:06:01Sash is a great design

0:06:01 > 0:06:03cos it creates great ventilation through a room.

0:06:03 > 0:06:06Cos if you slide them up towards each other, it comes...

0:06:06 > 0:06:08The air comes in from the bottom and out through the top.

0:06:08 > 0:06:10That's why they work well.

0:06:10 > 0:06:14Sash windows originate in the late 17th century

0:06:14 > 0:06:17but it's in Georgian architecture that they've become commonplace

0:06:17 > 0:06:20and they're the only original feature left in this room.

0:06:20 > 0:06:26So the brief here is to create a comfortable living area

0:06:26 > 0:06:30but then also allow him to work on his bicycle repairs.

0:06:30 > 0:06:33And so that's really a great example of how our designer is going

0:06:33 > 0:06:35to have to really listen to the client.

0:06:37 > 0:06:41Taking on Nigel's living room is father-of-two Neil from Brighton.

0:06:41 > 0:06:44The designers have been working on their clients' briefs for a week

0:06:44 > 0:06:48but this will be the first time they'll meet in person.

0:06:48 > 0:06:50Shall I talk you through some of the ideas that I've had?

0:06:50 > 0:06:52- Yeah, please do. Yeah.- OK.

0:06:52 > 0:06:55Daniel and Sophie will be judging the designers' presentations by

0:06:55 > 0:06:59looking at how well they put forward their design, forge a relationship

0:06:59 > 0:07:04with their client and how adaptable they are to their clients' needs.

0:07:04 > 0:07:06I mean, I know, obviously, you know,

0:07:06 > 0:07:09you've got your own bicycle repair shop and you're really into cycling.

0:07:09 > 0:07:13So particularly, I was thinking something like the Tour de France,

0:07:13 > 0:07:17taking some of those colours as, like, a really good highlight colour,

0:07:17 > 0:07:20almost a really, really light grey for the walls

0:07:20 > 0:07:25but running this sort of like a yellow rail running through.

0:07:25 > 0:07:27It's probably just going to be a line, like,

0:07:27 > 0:07:28a nod to a finishing line.

0:07:28 > 0:07:32- Yeah.- I'm going to put some shelving into that alcove,

0:07:32 > 0:07:36hopefully, recycling some old doors so it'll have a bit of character.

0:07:36 > 0:07:37Yeah, yeah.

0:07:37 > 0:07:39I know it mentioned in your brief that you'd really like

0:07:39 > 0:07:41- to go to a wooden floor. - It'd be an improvement.

0:07:41 > 0:07:44And then I'm going to try and house these bike wheels,

0:07:44 > 0:07:47- maybe on a racking system.- Yeah.

0:07:47 > 0:07:50Neil's bicycle-themed design is going down well with his client.

0:07:50 > 0:07:53But Nigel's not giving him completely free rein.

0:07:53 > 0:07:55I might repaint this in another colour.

0:07:55 > 0:07:58I'm going to think about spraying it grey.

0:07:58 > 0:08:01- Over my dead body! All right? - What, this?- Yeah, this.

0:08:01 > 0:08:04- You don't want me to colour it? - I don't want to colour it.

0:08:04 > 0:08:08- I want it as it is. I like natural. - OK.- I'm a natural man.- OK.

0:08:08 > 0:08:11Well, maybe I can just... I think it'll be fine.

0:08:11 > 0:08:14I've got another one, hopefully, that's going to sit with it

0:08:14 > 0:08:16- so I'll keep that natural as well. - Yeah.

0:08:16 > 0:08:19It might pox up the colour design and stuff like that.

0:08:19 > 0:08:23I'm glad I asked you about that. If I'd just painted it...

0:08:23 > 0:08:26The other thing I was thinking - how do you feel about having

0:08:26 > 0:08:29- some bike parts used to create bits of furniture?- Excellent.

0:08:29 > 0:08:32I've got old frames and old bits of biz and old wheels.

0:08:32 > 0:08:35- More than enough to keep you happy for the rest of your life! - Oh, brilliant.

0:08:37 > 0:08:38A really promising start.

0:08:38 > 0:08:41Neil was really able to, like, get him on side and get him

0:08:41 > 0:08:43really involved in the process.

0:08:43 > 0:08:47But unfortunately, Neil is wanting to give him this slightly quirky,

0:08:47 > 0:08:51funny, amusing space, where Nigel really needs something that's

0:08:51 > 0:08:55very practical and is... In fact, it's going to be his first home.

0:08:55 > 0:08:56He's going to live there.

0:08:59 > 0:09:03Neil now has three days, the help of a builder and £1,000

0:09:03 > 0:09:05to turn his vision into reality.

0:09:05 > 0:09:08We're going to take this carpet up

0:09:08 > 0:09:10and see what the floorboards are like.

0:09:12 > 0:09:14There's loads to do, there's loads to do, there's loads to do,

0:09:14 > 0:09:16but I guess we'll get it done.

0:09:16 > 0:09:19It's fine. I'm not really stressy yet. Give me, like, two hours!

0:09:24 > 0:09:27The second property is a one-up, one-down.

0:09:27 > 0:09:31The downstairs room is slightly larger than the last living room

0:09:31 > 0:09:33with a small kitchenette on the side.

0:09:33 > 0:09:36Its home to jazz musician Shamus Dark.

0:09:36 > 0:09:41The songs that I sing were mostly written in the 1930s and '40s

0:09:41 > 0:09:43and at that time, of course,

0:09:43 > 0:09:46it was the golden age of Hollywood and it was film noir.

0:09:46 > 0:09:49They got all the fashions there

0:09:49 > 0:09:52which I think are absolutely fantastic.

0:09:52 > 0:09:56Shamus knows what he wants - a room with a Casablanca, film noir feel

0:09:56 > 0:09:59that makes the most of his vintage pieces.

0:09:59 > 0:10:01He also knows what he doesn't want.

0:10:01 > 0:10:04No chintz, no pink and no chandeliers.

0:10:04 > 0:10:05Thank you very much.

0:10:10 > 0:10:11So, here we are in Shamus's house.

0:10:13 > 0:10:19- It's got everything in it. Kitchen, living space, studio.- Study.

0:10:19 > 0:10:22- The lot. Library.- He's actually planned it out quite nicely.

0:10:22 > 0:10:25I can see, actually, that he's got this space working quite well.

0:10:25 > 0:10:28And actually, the way that he's living in this space

0:10:28 > 0:10:31is exactly the way that it has been for the last 250 years.

0:10:31 > 0:10:34On this side here, would have been a big fireplace which would

0:10:34 > 0:10:37have in fact been a range, or what's called a register, which would

0:10:37 > 0:10:40have been cast iron and it would have a tiny little oven.

0:10:40 > 0:10:42It'd keep the room warm.

0:10:42 > 0:10:46It's almost sort of like... It's open-plan living in miniature.

0:10:46 > 0:10:50So the challenge for our designer is to work within quite a small space

0:10:50 > 0:10:52which has got lots of different areas.

0:10:52 > 0:10:55So you've got to think about how all those will work together.

0:10:55 > 0:10:58But also, not to lose sight of who Shamus is.

0:10:58 > 0:11:01The guy's got style and we don't want to iron that style out, do we?

0:11:04 > 0:11:08Given the task of transforming Shamus's multi-functional living room

0:11:08 > 0:11:10is full-time carer Lorna.

0:11:10 > 0:11:12This will be her first chance

0:11:12 > 0:11:14to put her interior design diploma into practice.

0:11:16 > 0:11:20- Welcome to my hovel! - Oh, it's a pleasure. Thank you.

0:11:20 > 0:11:22This is hopefully putting all the pieces

0:11:22 > 0:11:24and ideas together that I've got.

0:11:24 > 0:11:28I'm really keen to use the things that you love

0:11:28 > 0:11:31and hopefully, they will be incorporated in the design.

0:11:31 > 0:11:32The oil lamps as well?

0:11:32 > 0:11:36Yes. There's an eclectic amount of woods and textures.

0:11:36 > 0:11:38I know they're from different eras.

0:11:38 > 0:11:40Bit of Moroccan twist, a bit of film noir.

0:11:40 > 0:11:44- Absolutely, yeah, yeah. - So I'm thinking Casablanca.

0:11:45 > 0:11:47We have! We've got a bit of a mix of various styles

0:11:47 > 0:11:49but I believe it will work.

0:11:49 > 0:11:52Lorna's mood board doesn't include a floor plan,

0:11:52 > 0:11:56making the job of explaining her design to Shamus harder.

0:11:56 > 0:11:59So how about the layout of the room?

0:11:59 > 0:12:01For me, it would be pretty similar, not exactly.

0:12:01 > 0:12:04We'll have a few twists on it, hopefully.

0:12:04 > 0:12:06Just having slightly different angles

0:12:06 > 0:12:07on the table and your seating.

0:12:07 > 0:12:11I wasn't entirely clear on perhaps what she had in mind

0:12:11 > 0:12:14in terms of the... Of moving stuff around.

0:12:14 > 0:12:16I mean, I hope it's going to be all right.

0:12:16 > 0:12:18Lorna had, on that mood board,

0:12:18 > 0:12:21a couple of really quite interesting images

0:12:21 > 0:12:25where I thought she pinpointed him exactly!

0:12:25 > 0:12:28But actually, she didn't seem to ever really talk him through

0:12:28 > 0:12:30what her ideas behind those images were.

0:12:33 > 0:12:36The judges and Shamus may not be clear what Lorna's design

0:12:36 > 0:12:38will actually look like,

0:12:38 > 0:12:41but she seems confident in her vision for the room.

0:12:41 > 0:12:44The picture of my design that I have in my head,

0:12:44 > 0:12:47it will be quite eclectic and it will be a different...

0:12:47 > 0:12:48All different styles.

0:12:48 > 0:12:52A lot of things that may not actually go in style or trends

0:12:52 > 0:12:54but they will go for Shamus.

0:12:54 > 0:12:57So for me, it should go absolutely amazingly.

0:13:00 > 0:13:03The third property is a 1950s addition

0:13:03 > 0:13:05to the rest of the almshouses,

0:13:05 > 0:13:09built slightly larger, for the site manager of Hopton's.

0:13:09 > 0:13:12The living room is long and narrow, larger than Nigel's room

0:13:12 > 0:13:15but around the same size as Shamus's.

0:13:15 > 0:13:19Mum-of-one Deborah has lived and worked here for 12 years.

0:13:19 > 0:13:21It's never felt like home.

0:13:21 > 0:13:24I've come to realise that the walls are closing in on me

0:13:24 > 0:13:26and there's just too much stuff.

0:13:26 > 0:13:29I look forward to the day when I can spend more time in here

0:13:29 > 0:13:31and feel comfortable in the space.

0:13:37 > 0:13:40Well, first impressions is there's a lot of clutter.

0:13:40 > 0:13:43But I think it all probably just needs editing a little bit.

0:13:43 > 0:13:45There's obviously storage issues here.

0:13:45 > 0:13:47This is an interesting house, this one, isn't it?

0:13:47 > 0:13:51This is, in fact, an extension of the original building,

0:13:51 > 0:13:54built in the 1950s, so, what, 200 years later?

0:13:54 > 0:13:56And yet, they've built it on the outside

0:13:56 > 0:13:58in the same style, which is,

0:13:58 > 0:14:01I think, in the 1950s, quite interesting

0:14:01 > 0:14:03because that time was a brave new world

0:14:03 > 0:14:06and everybody was building new architecture.

0:14:06 > 0:14:09There are some little details which I think is quite 1950s.

0:14:09 > 0:14:12The bit that's jumping out at me is this parquet flooring.

0:14:12 > 0:14:14- It's beautiful, isn't it? - Parquet's back!

0:14:14 > 0:14:17Everybody wants parquet and they've got it.

0:14:17 > 0:14:19It's here and it's rather an expensive one.

0:14:19 > 0:14:21What do you think about the room itself?

0:14:21 > 0:14:23- Actually, it's quite long and narrow, isn't it?- Yeah.

0:14:23 > 0:14:26The TV is miles away from the sofa and then you've kind of got

0:14:26 > 0:14:29this empty space in the middle with everything pushed to the sides.

0:14:29 > 0:14:32- Yeah.- A big challenge for this interior designer's going to be

0:14:32 > 0:14:34to see through all this clutter

0:14:34 > 0:14:37and make some sense of how this space is actually going to work.

0:14:39 > 0:14:41Taking on Deborah's cluttered living room

0:14:41 > 0:14:45is self-proclaimed perfectionist Jane from Kent.

0:14:45 > 0:14:48So your brief was for a very relaxed,

0:14:48 > 0:14:51warm, cosy, Moroccan-feeling living room.

0:14:51 > 0:14:55For the layout of the room, I thought we'd move this sofa

0:14:55 > 0:14:57to the other end of the room

0:14:57 > 0:15:01and then move the television away from that space, basically,

0:15:01 > 0:15:03and utilise the fireplace and the alcoves

0:15:03 > 0:15:07and the shelving around it and make more of a feature of that.

0:15:07 > 0:15:09I think we'll keep a sideboard. Maybe that could be upcycled.

0:15:09 > 0:15:11You could paint it, you know.

0:15:11 > 0:15:14But it encourages me. This is the thing. Look at the top of it.

0:15:14 > 0:15:17It encourages me to do that. That's what I want to get away from!

0:15:17 > 0:15:19- OK. So you want clear surfaces?- I do.

0:15:19 > 0:15:23I absolutely want to be able to walk into a room and be able to breathe.

0:15:23 > 0:15:25I'm looking forward to actually getting it cleared.

0:15:25 > 0:15:27- You've got a challenge, that's for sure!- Thank you.

0:15:27 > 0:15:31It's going to take two days to clear it, though!

0:15:31 > 0:15:32We flagged up, straightaway,

0:15:32 > 0:15:34that we felt it was quite a long and narrow room

0:15:34 > 0:15:38and the layout was going to have to work hard to address that problem.

0:15:38 > 0:15:40I don't see she's really thought that out. In fact,

0:15:40 > 0:15:42she has just flipped the layout.

0:15:42 > 0:15:45The other thing that I feel's quite important, given how much stuff

0:15:45 > 0:15:48is in that room, I mean, she still is going to need

0:15:48 > 0:15:49a fair bit of storage,

0:15:49 > 0:15:52and all I can see in that plan is just using that sideboard.

0:15:52 > 0:15:55I would imagine that, actually, during the building process,

0:15:55 > 0:15:57she's extremely organised,

0:15:57 > 0:16:00she's ticking all the boxes and she's going to go for it.

0:16:00 > 0:16:01- Take the chair.- It's quite heavy.

0:16:03 > 0:16:08- OK?- Jane is single-minded when it comes to clearing Deborah's clutter.

0:16:08 > 0:16:11But her client still needs some persuading.

0:16:11 > 0:16:13I just thought this can go in and I thought, oh, I don't know.

0:16:13 > 0:16:17- You could float candles in there. - No, you can't.- It's chipped.- No.

0:16:17 > 0:16:21- It's my natural instinct.- You're a hoarder. What about this?- Huh?

0:16:21 > 0:16:22Um... I just bought that!

0:16:29 > 0:16:32Work is under way, but there's a lot to do before the amateurs

0:16:32 > 0:16:35bring their new-look designs to these historic buildings.

0:16:37 > 0:16:41At 260 years old, Hopton's is a youngster.

0:16:41 > 0:16:44The oldest surviving almshouses in the UK are in Worcester

0:16:44 > 0:16:47and they were built more than 1,000 years ago.

0:16:47 > 0:16:51Then, as now, almshouses provided accommodation for those in need

0:16:51 > 0:16:55and they're still home to some 35,000 people across the UK.

0:16:57 > 0:17:01The traditional three-sided open quadrangle design of these houses

0:17:01 > 0:17:03was designed to create a sense of security

0:17:03 > 0:17:06and safety from the outside world.

0:17:06 > 0:17:08And right at the centre, there was usually a chapel.

0:17:08 > 0:17:11These were normally set up by church institutions

0:17:11 > 0:17:15and they wanted to remind the residents of the importance of God.

0:17:15 > 0:17:18Here, though, there was a parish church just around the corner,

0:17:18 > 0:17:19so it made it unnecessary.

0:17:21 > 0:17:23Instead, the quad was left empty for a garden,

0:17:23 > 0:17:25and a fountain was situated in the middle

0:17:25 > 0:17:27where the residents could draw water.

0:17:29 > 0:17:34Inside, the buildings have been reconfigured many times over the years.

0:17:36 > 0:17:38Neil has the smallest room to redesign

0:17:38 > 0:17:40but the most difficult brief -

0:17:40 > 0:17:43to include a workshop and a living room.

0:17:43 > 0:17:45With a budget of only £1,000,

0:17:45 > 0:17:47he needs to make the most of what's on offer.

0:17:49 > 0:17:53Unable to afford a new floor, he's decided to strip back

0:17:53 > 0:17:55the original floorboards.

0:17:55 > 0:17:58Yeah, we had a bit of a quandary on the floorboards.

0:17:58 > 0:17:59I think a few of them had been patched up.

0:17:59 > 0:18:01Historically, some are uneven.

0:18:01 > 0:18:04We're just worried that it's going to take time

0:18:04 > 0:18:07to obviously get rid of all the nails and then sand them.

0:18:08 > 0:18:11Sanding a floor is a time-consuming job.

0:18:11 > 0:18:15Even a room this size will take several hours.

0:18:15 > 0:18:18In preparation, you need to remove or bang in any protruding nails

0:18:18 > 0:18:22with a nail punch so that they don't damage the sanding machine.

0:18:27 > 0:18:29To achieve her Casablanca-style design,

0:18:29 > 0:18:33Lorna wants to paint the walls in Shamus's room a light grey.

0:18:33 > 0:18:36But to avoid the paint bubbling or appearing patchy,

0:18:36 > 0:18:39she has to wash away years of tobacco stains

0:18:39 > 0:18:43using an alkaline product called sugar soap. A tedious job!

0:18:44 > 0:18:47Finish will actually look better in the end.

0:18:47 > 0:18:50That's really important to me, to be able to get a good finish,
