0:00:02 > 0:00:04I'm constantly taken aback by the huge variety
0:00:04 > 0:00:05of property styles in Britain,
0:00:05 > 0:00:09from characterful timber-framed cottages to grand town houses.
0:00:09 > 0:00:11But sometimes, the insides
0:00:11 > 0:00:15don't live up to the expectations on the outside.
0:00:15 > 0:00:18So, we've gathered together the most talented amateur interior designers
0:00:18 > 0:00:22who think they could be the next big thing to show us how it's done.
0:00:22 > 0:00:24But it's not as easy as it looks.
0:00:24 > 0:00:25Why-y-y-y?!
0:00:25 > 0:00:28- I've got self-doubt creeping in. - Yes!
0:00:28 > 0:00:30Across three knockout episodes,
0:00:30 > 0:00:34a group of designers will compete for one place in finals week.
0:00:34 > 0:00:36It seems like there's so much to do.
0:00:36 > 0:00:37No pressure!
0:00:37 > 0:00:40Good job. I like it.
0:00:40 > 0:00:44Judging them, two industry experts - Daniel Hopwood...
0:00:44 > 0:00:45What I'm looking for
0:00:45 > 0:00:47is talent that can be nurtured.
0:00:47 > 0:00:49..and Sophie Robinson.
0:00:49 > 0:00:50I want the designers
0:00:50 > 0:00:52to impress me with their creativity.
0:00:52 > 0:00:55They'll be scrutinising presentation skills...
0:00:55 > 0:00:57That was not the way to present to somebody.
0:00:57 > 0:00:59..artistic flair...
0:00:59 > 0:01:02- Have you ever seen that done before? - No, it's weird.
0:01:02 > 0:01:04..and how well they deliver their brief.
0:01:04 > 0:01:08- Pretty amazing transformation. - Absolutely beautiful.
0:01:08 > 0:01:12In the finals, the best will face giants of the design world -
0:01:12 > 0:01:13Oliver Heath...
0:01:13 > 0:01:14Oh, my word.
0:01:14 > 0:01:15..Orla Kiely...
0:01:15 > 0:01:17It does look quite rough.
0:01:17 > 0:01:20- ..and Kelly Hoppen. - I want perfection.
0:01:21 > 0:01:23But only one can be crowned winner
0:01:23 > 0:01:25of The Great Interior Design Challenge.
0:01:32 > 0:01:35Our last group of four amateur designers
0:01:35 > 0:01:36take on rooms that lack colour...
0:01:37 > 0:01:41..lack charm, but have exacting clients.
0:01:41 > 0:01:43This time, our amateurs will be updating a bedroom each
0:01:43 > 0:01:47in four ground-breaking self-build homes in South London.
0:01:47 > 0:01:50All four designers have a distinctive style...
0:01:50 > 0:01:54- Rustic industrial. - Considered randomness.- Bold.
0:01:54 > 0:01:56More of a Jackson Pollock than it is a Monet.
0:01:56 > 0:01:59..but working to a client's brief is a different matter...
0:01:59 > 0:02:03But what I don't get from this is any sense of the practical...
0:02:03 > 0:02:04Who built this?
0:02:04 > 0:02:05Very blue.
0:02:05 > 0:02:09Yeah. It's a teal colour, yeah.
0:02:09 > 0:02:12..as they battle to keep their place in the competition...
0:02:12 > 0:02:14It hasn't quite got there, has it?
0:02:14 > 0:02:18For me, I just feel that this space is lacking the love.
0:02:18 > 0:02:19..because one must go.
0:02:21 > 0:02:24The designer going home this time is...
0:02:27 > 0:02:30This design clash is taking place
0:02:30 > 0:02:33in a unique enclave in South East London.
0:02:33 > 0:02:35After the deep recession of the mid-1970s,
0:02:35 > 0:02:37Britain went through a little economic boom.
0:02:37 > 0:02:39It was also a golden age for British housing.
0:02:39 > 0:02:42One innovative architect, Walter Segal, though,
0:02:42 > 0:02:43didn't just design his homes,
0:02:43 > 0:02:46he empowered his residents to do it themselves.
0:02:46 > 0:02:48This little pocket of self-build homes
0:02:48 > 0:02:50is one of my favourite neighbourhoods.
0:02:50 > 0:02:53'70s and '80s design may not be everyone's cup of tea,
0:02:53 > 0:02:56but I think this place is rather special.
0:02:56 > 0:02:59Now, our designers are updating a bedroom each
0:02:59 > 0:03:02for the current owners, their very first clients.
0:03:11 > 0:03:14It's the full width of the wall that will be,
0:03:14 > 0:03:17literally, from wall to wall, will be the structure of the tree.
0:03:17 > 0:03:20The designers have been given a brief from their homeowners,
0:03:20 > 0:03:23which they've been preparing for the past week.
0:03:23 > 0:03:25When I first saw the brief, I almost had a heart attack.
0:03:25 > 0:03:29A world away from what I'm used to, but I think I'm going to do well.
0:03:29 > 0:03:32- Paper in the middle, sandwiched. - Paper in between.
0:03:32 > 0:03:34- Almost like a Japanese sort of... - Yes, the Japanese frame.
0:03:34 > 0:03:38I'm feeling well-prepared, I've thought everything through.
0:03:38 > 0:03:40They've got a small team to help them,
0:03:40 > 0:03:42including a builder and a decorator.
0:03:42 > 0:03:45So, I just want to try and construct something
0:03:45 > 0:03:47out of MDF to go at the end.
0:03:47 > 0:03:48I've got the casters.
0:03:48 > 0:03:51A bit nervous, but hopefully they're going to like what I've done.
0:03:51 > 0:03:52Just have to see, really.
0:03:52 > 0:03:56They also have a budget of £1,000 and three days.
0:03:56 > 0:03:59Do you know what? We'll see. We'll hang it and see which way it goes.
0:03:59 > 0:04:01Right. I think that will be all right.
0:04:01 > 0:04:03When I first got the brief, I saw that the homeowners
0:04:03 > 0:04:06had quite a long list of what they would like in the room.
0:04:06 > 0:04:09So, hopefully, with a bit of creativity, I've managed to do that.
0:04:12 > 0:04:16It's far better to have more space than just having one,
0:04:16 > 0:04:18cos you can obviously double up then, can't you?
0:04:18 > 0:04:22First up is 44-year-old furniture restyler Talie,
0:04:22 > 0:04:24who lives in Buckinghamshire.
0:04:24 > 0:04:26As long as things don't match...
0:04:26 > 0:04:30Big, bold colours, you know, I'm happy.
0:04:30 > 0:04:33At my age, I don't give a monkey's what anybody thinks about my design.
0:04:33 > 0:04:37It's in my house, other people can jog on.
0:04:37 > 0:04:41The room Talie is working in was a mishmash of a master bedroom,
0:04:41 > 0:04:44which Sophie and Daniel checked out before she got started.
0:04:45 > 0:04:47Well, well...
0:04:47 > 0:04:49- What do you do with a pole in the bedroom?- I know.
0:04:49 > 0:04:52That's quite limiting to the layout of this space, isn't it?
0:04:52 > 0:04:55- Cos you're not going to be moving that.- Definitely not.
0:04:55 > 0:04:57It's bolted in at the top.
0:04:57 > 0:05:01Talie's homeowners have asked for a daring Middle Eastern-inspired room,
0:05:01 > 0:05:04with a warm and spicy colour scheme.
0:05:04 > 0:05:07You might not like a Moroccan theme, but it is what's asked of the brief,
0:05:07 > 0:05:10and I think probably in an attempt to bring some cohesion
0:05:10 > 0:05:12to this space, and it might just do that.
0:05:12 > 0:05:15But the designer clearly has to be highly-skilled
0:05:15 > 0:05:17because she's got to interpret that very well
0:05:17 > 0:05:20to make it look stylish and classy.
0:05:20 > 0:05:24Talie's attempt at a classy Moroccan theme includes a blue colour scheme
0:05:24 > 0:05:27alongside accents of yellow and red,
0:05:27 > 0:05:29which she had to get signed off by homeowners Ian and Cherie
0:05:29 > 0:05:31earlier on.
0:05:31 > 0:05:34This is my modern Moroccan-style bedroom.
0:05:34 > 0:05:38Interior designers have to be able to present their ideas clearly,
0:05:38 > 0:05:41something our amateurs are doing for the first time.
0:05:41 > 0:05:44What they don't know yet is that they'll be judged
0:05:44 > 0:05:48and later ranked on how well they present their designs.
0:05:48 > 0:05:50So, what I thought is with this blue,
0:05:50 > 0:05:55- I thought we'd do the walls and it's a real kind of cosy blue.- Yeah.
0:05:55 > 0:05:58It will also make the room look quite a bit bigger.
0:05:58 > 0:06:00We kind of didn't really kind of feel like...
0:06:00 > 0:06:04- we wanted blue, as in blue... - Well, it's a warm blue.
0:06:04 > 0:06:08- It's a blue I wasn't thinking.- It's more like a teal sort of colour.
0:06:08 > 0:06:10Talie's pushing her homeowners on the blue.
0:06:10 > 0:06:13And she has bold plans for the wardrobe as well.
0:06:13 > 0:06:16You're going to have this metal fretwork,
0:06:16 > 0:06:19and this is going to be incorporated in your new wardrobes
0:06:19 > 0:06:20that we're having built.
0:06:20 > 0:06:24- And also, it will be on the back of your bed.- OK. Yes.
0:06:24 > 0:06:26What colour are you going to paint the bed?
0:06:26 > 0:06:29- It will probably be in the same as the wall.- OK.- Yeah, definitely.
0:06:29 > 0:06:31- So, it'll blend in. OK? - That'll be cool.
0:06:31 > 0:06:34She's quite slick, even a little pushy at times, I thought.
0:06:34 > 0:06:36But it was a little bit textbook.
0:06:36 > 0:06:38We've both seen designs like that before,
0:06:38 > 0:06:40especially in Moroccan styles.
0:06:40 > 0:06:44And this couple wanted something a little bit edgy.
0:06:45 > 0:06:47The judges may not think Talie's scheme is edgy,
0:06:47 > 0:06:51but her colour choice seems to be provoking a reaction.
0:06:51 > 0:06:53And see, I wouldn't have chosen that blue.
0:06:53 > 0:06:55If I was going to do blue, it would be a different colour blue.
0:06:55 > 0:06:59But, despite reservations, the blue is going up.
0:06:59 > 0:07:01I think they're really going to like it.
0:07:01 > 0:07:03Cos said they liked spicy colours and, you know,
0:07:03 > 0:07:06you can have spicy colour in, you know, the blue tone as well.
0:07:06 > 0:07:08And this is a pretty spicy colour.
0:07:08 > 0:07:11I love it. Love it, love it, love it.
0:07:14 > 0:07:18- The bed's moving down, probably about one button length.- OK.
0:07:18 > 0:07:21The second designer is 60-year-old author and illustrator Anne,
0:07:21 > 0:07:25whose home in Tyneside reflects her eclectic taste.
0:07:25 > 0:07:29I don't think I can pin down my style at all. I'm not quite sure.
0:07:29 > 0:07:31It's free-range organic, maybe.
0:07:31 > 0:07:35Anne's updating what was a busy nine-year-old girl's bedroom.
0:07:35 > 0:07:39This room is just crammed. I can't bear it, actually.
0:07:39 > 0:07:41Too much stuff in my opinion.
0:07:41 > 0:07:44Anne's brief was for a more grown-up bedroom,
0:07:44 > 0:07:46with Japanese-inspired decor.
0:07:46 > 0:07:48Look, she wants a sophisticated look,
0:07:48 > 0:07:51so, all this clutter is not going to help achieve that.
0:07:51 > 0:07:55On the brief, she wants Kyoto cherry blossom garden.
0:07:55 > 0:07:57I think there could be a lot of creativity there.
0:07:57 > 0:07:58It could be quite original.
0:07:58 > 0:08:02But that's a lot to demand from what is not a very big space.
0:08:03 > 0:08:06Anne plans to cram quite a lot in.
0:08:06 > 0:08:09Her sophisticated Japanese scheme includes bespoke artwork
0:08:09 > 0:08:13and fabrics aplenty, which she explained to her young client, Anna,
0:08:13 > 0:08:16and mum Claire before she got started.
0:08:16 > 0:08:19- What do you think about the colours? - I like all of them.
0:08:19 > 0:08:25You like all of them? All of these here are all made in Japan.
0:08:25 > 0:08:29And they'll be wrapped around some cushions. Do you like tassels?
0:08:29 > 0:08:32So I was making, sort of, like, an Oriental bunting.
0:08:32 > 0:08:34Do you like the idea of that?
0:08:34 > 0:08:37But what I don't get from this is any sense of the practical
0:08:37 > 0:08:41Well, for the main storage, there will be a wardrobe,
0:08:41 > 0:08:44and that will incorporate a little dressing table.
0:08:44 > 0:08:46- All right?- Sounds lovely.
0:08:46 > 0:08:50I think Anne was lulling them into a false sense of security
0:08:50 > 0:08:54because there were no drawings, no plans, no elevations.
0:08:54 > 0:08:56And actually, there's a lot of stuff in there
0:08:56 > 0:08:59that needs editing down or storing efficiently.
0:08:59 > 0:09:01And it isn't at the moment,
0:09:01 > 0:09:03and we don't how she's going to do that either.
0:09:03 > 0:09:07Well, Anne does have a plan - use her powers of persuasion.
0:09:07 > 0:09:09You know how you want to be sophisticated?
0:09:09 > 0:09:12So, you've got quite a small bedroom.
0:09:12 > 0:09:14Although we can make some storage,
0:09:14 > 0:09:16we can't make the bedroom bigger for you,
0:09:16 > 0:09:20so you've got to tackle that corner over there.
0:09:20 > 0:09:23'I don't mind. I mean, Anna could do with having less stuff.'
0:09:23 > 0:09:27What I suppose I won't be happy with is if there's things
0:09:27 > 0:09:29that she really loves and then there's no room
0:09:29 > 0:09:31in the room for them to go back in.
0:09:31 > 0:09:34I'm hoping that we can make a lovely room,
0:09:34 > 0:09:37but I can't make it six times bigger than it is.
0:09:40 > 0:09:42Yeah, well, they're just... We're sort of putting them in.
0:09:42 > 0:09:44I'm still quite comfortable.
0:09:44 > 0:09:45Our third designer is Craig,
0:09:45 > 0:09:49a 28-year-old industrial textile weaver from Burnley.
0:09:49 > 0:09:52I've only ever bought one interior design magazine,
0:09:52 > 0:09:55but I always manage to make it look good.
0:09:55 > 0:10:00I don't like mass-produced type things. I like something unique.
0:10:00 > 0:10:04Craig is giving a new look to what was a very plain bedroom.
0:10:04 > 0:10:06Actually, the bones of this room are rather good.
0:10:06 > 0:10:09It's light, it's got the gift of fitted storage.
0:10:09 > 0:10:13It just needs a bit more character, a bit more life put into it.
0:10:13 > 0:10:16Craig's been asked to create a peaceful retreat.
0:10:16 > 0:10:18They want this haven of tranquillity,
0:10:18 > 0:10:23a space that's very separate from the busy life of parents
0:10:23 > 0:10:25and young kids downstairs.
0:10:25 > 0:10:26So, I'm thinking primary colours
0:10:26 > 0:10:28probably aren't the way to go in here.
0:10:28 > 0:10:30But Craig, it seems, thinks differently,
0:10:30 > 0:10:34as his design scheme champions large splatterings of bold colour,
0:10:34 > 0:10:37which he had to run by his homeowners Will and Helen
0:10:37 > 0:10:39before he could get going.
0:10:39 > 0:10:41You did mention you liked burnt orange, so...
0:10:41 > 0:10:43That's...that's his colour.
0:10:43 > 0:10:46You can see, obviously, I'm just adding that orange
0:10:46 > 0:10:49sort of subtly all around the room. Not too bold.
0:10:49 > 0:10:52- Mm-hm.- I think the biggest item that's going to be orange,
0:10:52 > 0:10:54is, obviously, the over-bed table.
0:10:54 > 0:10:59- Orange naturally can mean emergency...- Yes, yeah.
0:10:59 > 0:11:02- ..or warning, rather than calm down.- Zigzags...
0:11:02 > 0:11:05So, yeah, no, it'll be interesting to see how that works in the room
0:11:05 > 0:11:07and how it comes together.
0:11:07 > 0:11:09Yeah. I think that...it's that over-bed table,
0:11:09 > 0:11:13- whether that's just...- Too much? - ..one step too far, too orange.
0:11:13 > 0:11:15I think what you'll find is...
0:11:16 > 0:11:19..you'll want more orange if I take that out.
0:11:19 > 0:11:21OK.
0:11:21 > 0:11:24Craig did a really comprehensive design.
0:11:24 > 0:11:26I mean, I really can get my head around that.
0:11:26 > 0:11:27I know exactly what he's doing.
0:11:27 > 0:11:32But, Dan, seriously, they wanted peaceful tranquillity.
0:11:32 > 0:11:34They're getting totally tangoed.
0:11:34 > 0:11:35It's not what they asked for.
0:11:37 > 0:11:41So, I need to get this bed on up and it's going to fit that way.
0:11:41 > 0:11:44Craig's sticking with his orange, though, as he rearranges
0:11:44 > 0:11:49the entire layout of the room to make way for his bright centrepiece.
0:11:49 > 0:11:53The whole point of sort of getting an interior designer
0:11:53 > 0:11:57is for them to give you a different outlook on how to design your house.
0:11:57 > 0:12:00So, I do like to stick to my guns in certain areas.
0:12:04 > 0:12:07So, this is now going to be a floor-to-ceiling,
0:12:07 > 0:12:09wall-to-wall wardrobe.
0:12:09 > 0:12:12Our final designer is a 27-year-old personal assistant
0:12:12 > 0:12:17from North London, and on a good day, she's known as Nadia.
0:12:17 > 0:12:19I do have a nickname which is Nadiva
0:12:19 > 0:12:23because I have been known to go down like a diva
0:12:23 > 0:12:28if I don't get my own way when it comes to designing things.
0:12:28 > 0:12:30Nadia's stamping her bold style
0:12:30 > 0:12:33on a room that was a neglected spare bedroom.
0:12:33 > 0:12:35It's a small bedroom,
0:12:35 > 0:12:39but it's about to be turned into a bedroom for two young ladies.
0:12:39 > 0:12:41I wonder if there's going to be enough space.
0:12:41 > 0:12:45Her clients want to move their two girls, Iris and May, into the room.
0:12:45 > 0:12:49So Nadia's been asked to create a magical woodland for them.
0:12:49 > 0:12:54The brief is a peach. You know, fantastical woodland.
0:12:54 > 0:12:55I mean, I can just see it already.
0:12:55 > 0:12:59I think this is a great opportunity to be hugely creative.
0:12:59 > 0:13:02Nadia's unleashed her creativity by designing
0:13:02 > 0:13:04a bespoke tree-shaped bed and shelving,
0:13:04 > 0:13:08an idea she had to sell to her homeowners Becky and Matthew
0:13:08 > 0:13:09before any work started.
0:13:09 > 0:13:12In keeping with the whole sort of nature and treehouse theme,
0:13:12 > 0:13:16I have made a boxed-in treehouse for the girls.
0:13:16 > 0:13:19The beds will look like swings.
0:13:19 > 0:13:21And if you take a look at this picture,
0:13:21 > 0:13:24they'll be suspended from ropes but they won't be load-bearing.
0:13:24 > 0:13:26- Can they see through there? - Into...? No.- Between the beds?
0:13:26 > 0:13:28It'd be nice to be able to chat, yeah.
0:13:28 > 0:13:30- If it's possible for them to see each other between.- OK.
0:13:30 > 0:13:33- It could be a nice little... - Hatch or something.- Yeah.
0:13:33 > 0:13:35So, the flooring
0:13:35 > 0:13:37is a really, really pale wood
0:13:37 > 0:13:39that's vintage in style
0:13:39 > 0:13:42with sort of inscriptions on the floor to look like wine crates.
0:13:42 > 0:13:45Is it possible that we could just use what's underneath here?
0:13:45 > 0:13:47- Oh, what is underneath? - Well, floorboards.
0:13:47 > 0:13:49There'll be floorboards, yeah. I'm not sure what state they're in.
0:13:49 > 0:13:52- It's a nice sort of look, maybe. Just natural.- OK.
0:13:52 > 0:13:54That's fine. Yeah, I will definitely
0:13:54 > 0:13:56try to do something with your floorboards if I can.
0:13:56 > 0:13:57Wonderful.
0:13:57 > 0:14:00I think she's generally got good ideas and good creativity,,
0:14:00 > 0:14:04but that board, Dan, it really gave away the bare minimum.
0:14:04 > 0:14:06And the problem with that is that the homeowners
0:14:06 > 0:14:08have got great imagination,
0:14:08 > 0:14:11and if she hasn't filled it with some nice images,
0:14:11 > 0:14:13they're going to do it and start taking over that project.
0:14:15 > 0:14:18With work underway, Nadia is prioritising
0:14:18 > 0:14:21the homeowners' request to use the existing floorboards.
0:14:21 > 0:14:24At the moment, we're just taking the carpet up, which is really exciting,
0:14:24 > 0:14:26I want to see what's underneath.
0:14:29 > 0:14:33And it is beautiful, unfinished floorboards. Perfect.
0:14:36 > 0:14:39All four designers are busy working,
0:14:39 > 0:14:42but they're about to find out the judging has already begun.
0:14:43 > 0:14:46- 'The judges want to see you outside.'- All right.
0:14:46 > 0:14:49OK. All right.
0:14:49 > 0:14:52OK. I'm now slightly nervous that the judges want to see me,
0:14:52 > 0:14:55but I'll thrust myself upon the sword.
0:14:56 > 0:14:59At this early stage, Sophie and Daniel will be judging them
0:14:59 > 0:15:01on how well they pitched to their clients.
0:15:03 > 0:15:05With just three places at stake in the next round,
0:15:05 > 0:15:08how well they've done so far...
0:15:08 > 0:15:09matters.
0:15:09 > 0:15:13We wanted you to come out, as we'd like to judge...
0:15:14 > 0:15:17..the way that you presented your projects.
0:15:19 > 0:15:20Their presentation skills, mood boards
0:15:20 > 0:15:23and drawings will all be assessed.
0:15:24 > 0:15:27Anne, you created the drama, the sense of theatre
0:15:27 > 0:15:32for your nine-year-old client, but no floor plan, no sketch.
0:15:32 > 0:15:33Big issue in that room is storage.
0:15:33 > 0:15:36We didn't see it anywhere on your presentation.
0:15:36 > 0:15:37Mm-hm.
0:15:37 > 0:15:42Craig, we felt you presented a very comprehensive board.
0:15:42 > 0:15:43I think perhaps we felt
0:15:43 > 0:15:45you steamrollered your client a little bit.
0:15:45 > 0:15:48I think it'd be fair to say you're pretty off-brief
0:15:48 > 0:15:50with someone who didn't want bold colour
0:15:50 > 0:15:52and they're kind of getting it.
0:15:52 > 0:15:53Pretty much right.
0:15:53 > 0:15:57Interestingly, you accused Craig of steamrollering.
0:15:57 > 0:15:58Someone else is doing that as well.
0:16:00 > 0:16:02I wonder who it is. Talie.
0:16:02 > 0:16:04- That would be me.- Quite strong.
0:16:04 > 0:16:07But what I did like to see was the fact that you had plans,
0:16:07 > 0:16:10elevations, it was really clear.
0:16:11 > 0:16:15Now, Nadia, you've got that entire picture in your head.
0:16:15 > 0:16:16You know what you want to do.
0:16:16 > 0:16:20And you describe it with great confidence.
0:16:20 > 0:16:21But I wasn't seeing it on the board.
0:16:21 > 0:16:25And, frankly, I felt it was just a little bit rushed.
0:16:25 > 0:16:27I'm worried.
0:16:28 > 0:16:31Now, we have already put you in order
0:16:31 > 0:16:35in where we think you are right now in the competition.
0:16:37 > 0:16:38Talie, you're leading.
0:16:40 > 0:16:43And in second is Craig.
0:16:45 > 0:16:47Third...
0:16:47 > 0:16:48is Anne.
0:16:50 > 0:16:52In fourth place at the moment is Nadia.
0:16:54 > 0:16:56I'm not going to lie, my mood board was rushed,
0:16:56 > 0:16:58so I can take that on the chin.
0:16:58 > 0:17:02But what I lack in preparation I will deliver in my final product.
0:17:02 > 0:17:06I would rather not be sitting here going, "Oh! Third. What's that?"
0:17:06 > 0:17:08No, I'd rather just be getting on with my job.
0:17:08 > 0:17:11I'd never in my wildest thought I'd come first in the briefing.
0:17:11 > 0:17:15It has really boosted me to, you know, to crack on now.
0:17:15 > 0:17:18I want to really transform this room. Really transform it.
0:17:21 > 0:17:25Making a big impact with simple ideas goes to the heart
0:17:25 > 0:17:27of the original design of this estate.
0:17:27 > 0:17:30Swiss, modernist architect Walter Segal
0:17:30 > 0:17:32loves simplicity in all things
0:17:32 > 0:17:35and drew on influences from Japan to America to come up
0:17:35 > 0:17:38with this stripped back, self-build model.
0:17:38 > 0:17:41Cost-effective materials and simple methods meant that anyone
0:17:41 > 0:17:43could put up these timber-framed homes.
0:17:44 > 0:17:48It wasn't just the construction that harked back to a bygone era.
0:17:48 > 0:17:52When these homes were completed in 1985, they must have felt weird.
0:17:52 > 0:17:54What little housing we were building at the time
0:17:54 > 0:17:57was mostly of the suburban type, with brick fronts and bow windows,
0:17:57 > 0:17:58very traditional.
0:17:58 > 0:18:01But Walter Segal was channelling a very different kind of tradition -
0:18:01 > 0:18:05more kind of Tudor, timber-framed, spartan and utilitarian -
0:18:05 > 0:18:08very strange in the '80s, that era of aspiration.
0:18:12 > 0:18:16Talie's aspirations for a blue room are also being realised,
0:18:16 > 0:18:19as the first coat is nearly up.
0:18:19 > 0:18:22So, she's adding some much-needed Moroccan spice to her scheme
0:18:22 > 0:18:24by painting a chest of drawers.
0:18:25 > 0:18:28I absolutely love restyling things,
0:18:28 > 0:18:33and making something that just looks absolutely amazing, really.
0:18:35 > 0:18:38Upcycling is Talie's signature skill at home in Buckinghamshire,
0:18:38 > 0:18:40but she has bigger dreams.
0:18:40 > 0:18:42I would love to win the competition.
0:18:42 > 0:18:46I mean, I'm in my mid-40s now, and you think,
0:18:46 > 0:18:48"Is there anything else you can do with your life?"
0:18:48 > 0:18:52But hopefully, this would lead to greater things, really.
0:18:52 > 0:18:55While stepdaughter and husband support Talie's dreams
0:18:55 > 0:18:58of being a designer, they do draw the line somewhere.
0:18:58 > 0:19:01Talie has a free rein in the house all bar one thing -
0:19:01 > 0:19:04that's dead animals around the house.
0:19:04 > 0:19:07But it doesn't stop taxidermy fan Talie dreaming.
0:19:07 > 0:19:10We'll be driving along and I'll see something like a pheasant.
0:19:10 > 0:19:15I think to myself, "I could grab that, send it off."
0:19:15 > 0:19:17But he won't allow me to put it in his posh car.
0:19:24 > 0:19:26Painting furniture by customising it
0:19:26 > 0:19:28isn't really ticking the box for me right now.
0:19:28 > 0:19:31I want to see experimentation, I want to see innovation,
0:19:31 > 0:19:33and I'm just getting a really competent scheme.
0:19:37 > 0:19:41Across the road, Anne's builder is tackling the storage issue
0:19:41 > 0:19:46while she prioritises some home-made Oriental-fringed bunting.
0:19:46 > 0:19:48I discovered this by pure accident.
0:19:48 > 0:19:51I was working with the fabric and realising that
0:19:51 > 0:19:53it so easily fell apart,
0:19:53 > 0:19:56so I thought, "If I put a row of stitches in,
0:19:56 > 0:20:00"then that will hold the weave of the fabric
0:20:00 > 0:20:03"and I should be able to pull the other bits off
0:20:03 > 0:20:05"and that will fringe it."
0:20:07 > 0:20:11Being frayed around the edges is the look Anne revels in
0:20:11 > 0:20:13at her Whitburn home.
0:20:13 > 0:20:14These are corbels.
0:20:14 > 0:20:17They were just cheap, plaster, white.
0:20:17 > 0:20:19So I've just painted them with an acrylic,
0:20:19 > 0:20:21and this one fell off, so I thought,
0:20:21 > 0:20:23"I know what. I'll glue it back together."
0:20:23 > 0:20:26Cos, actually, it'll have that lovely distressed look,
0:20:26 > 0:20:29so old and loved and worn out.
0:20:29 > 0:20:31A bit like me, really.
0:20:33 > 0:20:35I want to be the best I can be.
0:20:35 > 0:20:38I would love to sound like this really lovely, gentle soul,
0:20:38 > 0:20:40but I like to win.
0:20:42 > 0:20:45The reason I'm doing the textiles today
0:20:45 > 0:20:48and not sort of last as an addition is that, actually,
0:20:48 > 0:20:53these will tell me what colours are in the room or not in the room.
0:20:53 > 0:20:57- I think, potentially, she's a hugely exciting designer.- Yeah.
0:20:57 > 0:21:00She's really artistic, she's really creative,
0:21:00 > 0:21:03but project management, seriously risky strategy,
0:21:03 > 0:21:04making it up as you go along.
0:21:08 > 0:21:10This is the paint that's going on the walls.
0:21:10 > 0:21:12I think it's going to look mint.
0:21:12 > 0:21:14It's going to look mint!
0:21:14 > 0:21:16In Craig's room, the walls are being painted grey,
0:21:16 > 0:21:20and his builder has nearly finished the over-bed table.
0:21:20 > 0:21:22Hasn't taken you long, has it, really?
0:21:22 > 0:21:24Can't wait to paint it.
0:21:25 > 0:21:28Having renovated his cottage in Burnley
0:21:28 > 0:21:30and run a homewares shop with his sister,
0:21:30 > 0:21:32Craig thinks he's got the edge.
0:21:32 > 0:21:36I think I've got the potential to win. Definitely, yeah.
0:21:36 > 0:21:38I've got some great ideas.
0:21:38 > 0:21:40I used to be, like, upstairs on a Saturday,
0:21:40 > 0:21:42I'd be there sanding away something,
0:21:42 > 0:21:45some unit down to paint it, turn it into something else.
0:21:45 > 0:21:49So, yeah. I think I've got a really good chance of winning.
0:21:49 > 0:21:53Craig is equally as confident when it comes to THAT orange.
0:21:53 > 0:21:57Definitely think because, like, the walls are grey,
0:21:57 > 0:22:00the bedding's grey, it needs something bold.
0:22:00 > 0:22:04But just in little doses, so I think you'll be surprised
0:22:04 > 0:22:08how grown-up and tranquil it will feel.
0:22:08 > 0:22:11Well, he's certainly not compromising any of that design.
0:22:11 > 0:22:12He's certainly not.
0:22:12 > 0:22:15I mean, he was very assured about that orange, but have you seen it?
0:22:15 > 0:22:18In reality, it's quite...it's quite strong.
0:22:19 > 0:22:23Also experimenting with colour is Nadia, in her magical woodland room.
0:22:23 > 0:22:25Just wanted to put a little bit on the wall
0:22:25 > 0:22:27and see how that goes, really.
0:22:28 > 0:22:30This self-confessed diva, though,
0:22:30 > 0:22:34has spent an hour getting the colour just right.
0:22:34 > 0:22:37- I love it, that's definitely the one to go for.- OK. Perfect.
0:22:38 > 0:22:41Colour is important to Nadia in her current London home,
0:22:41 > 0:22:44but her interior design roots were developed much earlier.
0:22:44 > 0:22:47My mum was always doing up our house,
0:22:47 > 0:22:49and she still is always doing up the family home.
0:22:49 > 0:22:52We have been wallpapering and painting
0:22:52 > 0:22:56and trying to lay floors since about nine or ten years old.
0:22:56 > 0:22:58And from there, it just blossomed.
0:23:01 > 0:23:03The room looks a lot better with colour on the wall,
0:23:03 > 0:23:06and I feel like I'm making a little bit of progress as well,
0:23:06 > 0:23:09so this is really, really good news.
0:23:09 > 0:23:11But it's been very hard to follow what she's up to
0:23:11 > 0:23:13cos we haven't seen her plans.
0:23:13 > 0:23:15And I know she's having to change things.
0:23:15 > 0:23:16She thinks she knows what she's doing,
0:23:16 > 0:23:18- so we've just got to sit back and watch it.- Hm.
0:23:19 > 0:23:21As well as their room schemes,
0:23:21 > 0:23:24Sophie and Daniel have another bombshell for the designers.
0:23:24 > 0:23:27To test their quick-thinking skills and creativity,
0:23:27 > 0:23:31they're giving them all a surprise item to upcycle.
0:23:31 > 0:23:34- Nadia!- Hi.- Surprise.
0:23:34 > 0:23:37- I've got a challenge for you.- OK.
0:23:37 > 0:23:39Oh, please, no!
0:23:39 > 0:23:43- This is...- Thank you. - ..a flat-pack stool.- OK.
0:23:43 > 0:23:45You've got 24 hours.
0:23:45 > 0:23:48Either incorporate it in your design, hack it up,
0:23:48 > 0:23:51make it into something new and interesting,
0:23:51 > 0:23:53but I want to see maximum creativity.
0:23:53 > 0:23:55- Brilliant.- Have fun. - Thank you very much.
0:23:55 > 0:23:58So, now I have another project
0:23:58 > 0:24:01on top of the gazillions of other projects I'm dealing with.
0:24:01 > 0:24:05I'm a bit bamboozled at the moment on what to do with them.
0:24:05 > 0:24:10I know what I'm going to do with it. It's just finding the time to do it.
0:24:10 > 0:24:12Oh!
0:24:12 > 0:24:15The judges will see the upcycled items later on.
0:24:15 > 0:24:17How well they adapt their flat-pack stool
0:24:17 > 0:24:20will help Sophie and Daniel decide who goes home.
0:24:26 > 0:24:29Day one is nearly over,
0:24:29 > 0:24:33and with four designers jostling for just three places in the next round,
0:24:33 > 0:24:35the mind games begin.
0:24:35 > 0:24:36Are you up to speed?
0:24:36 > 0:24:39Yeah. I think I've just made up a lot of ground.
0:24:39 > 0:24:42I've got quite a bit to do, but I've also got quite a bit done.
0:24:42 > 0:24:44I'm hoping that happens tomorrow.
0:24:46 > 0:24:48I imagine they've got really good designs,
0:24:48 > 0:24:52but it's still not going to be as good as mine.
0:24:52 > 0:24:54I'm a little bit scared and a little bit nervous,
0:24:54 > 0:24:59but I'm going to put my energy into doing this room the best I can
0:24:59 > 0:25:02and hopefully it'll look magnificent.
0:25:02 > 0:25:04The most tiring part of the day
0:25:04 > 0:25:09is really trying to keep your head down,
0:25:09 > 0:25:12focused when there's lots and lots going on around you.
0:25:12 > 0:25:15I'm not going to forget being voted fourth,
0:25:15 > 0:25:17I'm not going to forget that.
0:25:17 > 0:25:20And hopefully, it will give me a bit of a push
0:25:20 > 0:25:22or a head start tomorrow.
0:25:32 > 0:25:34After a first day of tassels and tree designs,
0:25:34 > 0:25:36and a whole lot of blue,
0:25:36 > 0:25:38there's still an awfully long way to go
0:25:38 > 0:25:39before the projects are realised.
0:25:41 > 0:25:44With one designer due to go home after the judging tomorrow,
0:25:44 > 0:25:46the competition is intense.
0:25:46 > 0:25:48Today's going to be a big day.
0:25:48 > 0:25:50It's quite a lot of coordinating to do,
0:25:50 > 0:25:52a lot of building and painting at the same time.
0:25:54 > 0:25:55I think I might be a little bit behind,
0:25:55 > 0:25:58so I really have to get cracking real soon.
0:25:58 > 0:26:02Going to try and bring the design I intended to bring,
0:26:02 > 0:26:05and hopefully it's a winner.
0:26:05 > 0:26:08There's a lot going on, a lot of questions being asked,
0:26:08 > 0:26:12pulled in this and that direction and I'm feeling a bit like, "Ahh!"
0:26:12 > 0:26:14It's early in the day to be frazzled.
0:26:14 > 0:26:17And with a second coat of paint going on the walls,
0:26:17 > 0:26:20Nadia needs to work out the design of her tree-shaped bed.
0:26:20 > 0:26:22- So, like, sort of diagonal like this.- Yeah.
0:26:22 > 0:26:24But sort of, you know, angular.
0:26:24 > 0:26:26- Thank you.- My pleasure.
0:26:26 > 0:26:29Nadia's also foraging for makeshift steps.
0:26:30 > 0:26:32Oh, lord, insects, insects, insects.
0:26:32 > 0:26:35But foraging and divas don't mix.
0:26:35 > 0:26:39I need to get some gloves. There is no way I'm picking this up.
0:26:39 > 0:26:42SHE GROANS
0:26:43 > 0:26:46This should be just enough for them to step up onto their beds.
0:26:52 > 0:26:54Right now, it's just a green room.
0:26:54 > 0:26:58And she's got to transform that into a magical, woodland wonderland.
0:26:58 > 0:27:00And right now I'm not that enchanted.
0:27:03 > 0:27:06Hoping to make magic in her Japanese scheme,
0:27:06 > 0:27:10Anne is taking her time deciding which colours should go where.
0:27:10 > 0:27:14I need to put something other than the reds and the pinks in.
0:27:14 > 0:27:17I don't want it to be wishy-washy, if you know what I mean?
0:27:18 > 0:27:20So, where's that colour going?
0:27:20 > 0:27:23- This colour's going... It's on the bed...- Mm-hm.
0:27:23 > 0:27:25It's going there.
0:27:25 > 0:27:30- At the moment...- Yeah.- ..it's not going anywhere else, but it might.
0:27:31 > 0:27:32'I think Anne'
0:27:32 > 0:27:35is in a bit of her own bubble right now.
0:27:35 > 0:27:38And we're still not yet able to visualise that scheme.
0:27:38 > 0:27:40We don't know what it's going to look like,
0:27:40 > 0:27:42and more to the point, I don't think she does either.
0:27:46 > 0:27:50On day two, all the designers have to show their work in progress
0:27:50 > 0:27:51to their clients.
0:27:52 > 0:27:55- How you getting on? - I'm getting on really well.
0:27:55 > 0:27:58The fixture's on, lighting's in.
0:27:58 > 0:28:01I love this, all this open space, it's just brilliant.
0:28:01 > 0:28:02It's exactly what we wanted.
0:28:02 > 0:28:05It's a big moment for all of them -
0:28:05 > 0:28:09anything they don't like now could jeopardise the whole scheme.
0:28:09 > 0:28:13So, it doesn't feel like a huge amount has been done so far,
0:28:13 > 0:28:15it kind of looks empty
0:28:15 > 0:28:17- at the moment. - ANNE LAUGHS
0:28:17 > 0:28:20It didn't really lighten my spirits
0:28:20 > 0:28:22and I don't think it lightened theirs.
0:28:23 > 0:28:25For Talie, it's the first time her homeowners
0:28:25 > 0:28:27will see the controversial blue.
0:28:27 > 0:28:29Little bit apprehensive.
0:28:29 > 0:28:32Probably not as confident as yesterday.
0:28:39 > 0:28:41- Oh.- Very blue.
0:28:41 > 0:28:45Yeah, it's a teal colour. Yeah, it is...
0:28:45 > 0:28:48It's a... I think it's a cosy blue, don't you think?
0:28:48 > 0:28:50It's not a...
0:28:50 > 0:28:53Yeah, I think the thing is it's hard to tell at this stage.
0:28:53 > 0:28:56I mean, was a bit taken back by all the blue.
0:28:56 > 0:28:58It's sort of almost like a little blue box.
0:28:58 > 0:29:01I think you're going to have to see it with the other colours,
0:29:01 > 0:29:04cos it will complement it. You know, blue is the background,
0:29:04 > 0:29:07it's the canvas, it's what you put on it that counts.
0:29:13 > 0:29:15I'll try and stay out your way now.
0:29:15 > 0:29:19For Craig, it's all about showing his homeowners the over-bed table.
0:29:19 > 0:29:20Good.
0:29:20 > 0:29:24- Mr Orange is happening.- Yeah. - THEY LAUGH
0:29:24 > 0:29:27And their initial doubts are still there.
0:29:27 > 0:29:31I think one of the concerns is just the colour and how much...
0:29:31 > 0:29:34- how much colour there is. - It is very orange.
0:29:34 > 0:29:37And, also, I'm just worried about how much of me
0:29:37 > 0:29:40I can fit underneath that, cos I know how high our bed is
0:29:40 > 0:29:42and I'm just looking at it going, "Err..."
0:29:44 > 0:29:46Nothing's phasing confident Craig, though.
0:29:48 > 0:29:51It's surprising, like, if you do sort of start getting stressed out,
0:29:51 > 0:29:52you tend to get less done.
0:29:52 > 0:29:54So, I'm just going to pick up the pace
0:29:54 > 0:29:57but I'm still going to just try and stay relaxed.
0:29:59 > 0:30:01So, where did the bright orange and all the zigzags come from?
0:30:01 > 0:30:06I love burnt orange myself. And the zigzags, I mean,
0:30:06 > 0:30:09I know she sort of mentioned she doesn't like bold prints,
0:30:09 > 0:30:11but I believe that bold prints look really good in a room
0:30:11 > 0:30:14as long as you use them correctly and not too much,
0:30:14 > 0:30:17so I wanted to sort of open her mind to the idea of it.
0:30:17 > 0:30:19Yeah, take her outside her comfort zone a bit.
0:30:19 > 0:30:21Yeah, exactly, definitely.
0:30:22 > 0:30:24Out of their comfort zones, the designers
0:30:24 > 0:30:28aren't just transforming a room each, they've also got to come up
0:30:28 > 0:30:31with an ingenious product design from a flat-pack stool.
0:30:32 > 0:30:36Anne's come up with a simple decorative idea.
0:30:36 > 0:30:38I think what I'm going to do is cover all of these
0:30:38 > 0:30:42with some lovely paper to make it very, very pretty.
0:30:42 > 0:30:45And then assemble it as this, because it collapses
0:30:45 > 0:30:47so she can store it out of the way.
0:30:47 > 0:30:50I just don't think sticking pretty wallpaper on something
0:30:50 > 0:30:52counts as an upcycle.
0:30:52 > 0:30:53No, pretty though it is,
0:30:53 > 0:30:58it's hardly revolutionary or showing that much creativity.
0:30:58 > 0:31:00I've cracked it. Do I look smug?
0:31:01 > 0:31:04Talie's painting hers yellow, to be a wall feature.
0:31:04 > 0:31:08I waxed it to match the beams and then what I'm going to do
0:31:08 > 0:31:12is put some shelving on and hopefully be able to put some...
0:31:12 > 0:31:14display some nice plants or something on it.
0:31:14 > 0:31:16Little plants, yeah, brilliant.
0:31:16 > 0:31:17I like that it's got a practical use.
0:31:17 > 0:31:19I think that's quite a neat idea.
0:31:19 > 0:31:21I'm just happy with the fact it's not blue. What a relief.
0:31:21 > 0:31:25I just need another pair of hands, really, another pair of feet
0:31:25 > 0:31:27and probably a younger body.
0:31:27 > 0:31:30Craig's also thinking shelving.
0:31:30 > 0:31:33What I've done is took the back off the ladders
0:31:33 > 0:31:37and I'm going to use it as a bookshelf.
0:31:37 > 0:31:39He's used one half to lean up against the wall,
0:31:39 > 0:31:40creating a little bookshelf.
0:31:40 > 0:31:43Yeah, breaking something down to think about form
0:31:43 > 0:31:45and function is pretty impressive.
0:31:45 > 0:31:47I think it's a funky way of using this ladder.
0:31:47 > 0:31:49So, yeah, I'm happy with it.
0:31:49 > 0:31:52Nadia is turning hers into legs for a picnic table.
0:31:52 > 0:31:55And the top is going to be a mosaic
0:31:55 > 0:31:59of squares of plywood,
0:31:59 > 0:32:01any scraps that we've got left, so that the girls
0:32:01 > 0:32:03have a table to sit at.
0:32:03 > 0:32:05She's changed its purpose, which is good.
0:32:05 > 0:32:08Yeah, but I'm not sure what beauty it adds.
0:32:08 > 0:32:11The judges have seen all four stools given a new look.
0:32:11 > 0:32:14But the real test will be how well they integrate
0:32:14 > 0:32:17into the final schemes, which they'll see later on.
0:32:20 > 0:32:24These flat-pack stools may be flummoxing the designers,
0:32:24 > 0:32:28but they fit the ethos of these bespoke egalitarian homes,
0:32:28 > 0:32:32built by the original residents, on a council-backed housing scheme.
0:32:32 > 0:32:35These first-time builders weren't let entirely to their own devices.
0:32:35 > 0:32:37They were given detailed instructions,
0:32:37 > 0:32:41almost like a gigantic piece of flat-pack furniture,
0:32:41 > 0:32:43and Segal arranged for them to be given basic training
0:32:43 > 0:32:46in electrics and plumbing at the local technical college.
0:32:46 > 0:32:50He was determined that all members of the community, despite age,
0:32:50 > 0:32:53affluence or gender, should have exactly the same opportunity.
0:32:56 > 0:32:59Wherever possible, Segal got rid of the need for wet trades
0:32:59 > 0:33:01like bricklaying and plastering, so that almost everything
0:33:01 > 0:33:05could be done with a hammer, a screwdriver and a drill.
0:33:05 > 0:33:07The whole house bolts together on a kind of grid system,
0:33:07 > 0:33:09like a gigantic piece of Meccano.
0:33:09 > 0:33:12You can see how simple the construction is
0:33:12 > 0:33:14from this exposed, slatted staircase.
0:33:23 > 0:33:25Come on, you can cut to size, you can go in.
0:33:25 > 0:33:28Keeping things simple in her Moroccan room,
0:33:28 > 0:33:32Talie's using offcuts of wallpaper on her drawers...
0:33:32 > 0:33:36If anybody ever says it's just sticking wallpaper...
0:33:36 > 0:33:39onto furniture, I'd like to throttle them.
0:33:39 > 0:33:43..which means more blue.
0:33:43 > 0:33:46Even a heatproof vase Talie is turning into a lampshade
0:33:46 > 0:33:48has a hint of blue.
0:33:48 > 0:33:52What we're going to do is turn the glass over,
0:33:52 > 0:33:57pop it on there, like that, and then this will go over the top.
0:33:57 > 0:33:59Hey, bingo.
0:34:01 > 0:34:05Feeling buoyed, Talie visits one of her rivals.
0:34:05 > 0:34:07Oh, my God, there's so much colour.
0:34:07 > 0:34:09- Yes.- Did you shred all that yourself?
0:34:09 > 0:34:13- Yes.- I absolutely love it.
0:34:14 > 0:34:16Ahh.
0:34:16 > 0:34:19So, we'll have some book storage there,
0:34:19 > 0:34:23fitted shelves along here and there's a drop-down desk.
0:34:23 > 0:34:27- The bed...- When's the deadline?
0:34:27 > 0:34:28Who invited you?
0:34:30 > 0:34:32I felt slightly worried, yeah, because she's putting a lot
0:34:32 > 0:34:36into that room and she looks really creative, yeah.
0:34:36 > 0:34:39So, I probably wish I hadn't popped in and visited now.
0:34:41 > 0:34:46At long last, Nadia's tree-shaped shelving and bed are going in.
0:34:48 > 0:34:51I'm so pleased that something's up
0:34:51 > 0:34:53and the room's sort of coming to life.
0:34:57 > 0:34:58Wow.
0:35:00 > 0:35:02- What do you think, what do you think?- Look at all this.
0:35:02 > 0:35:04I'm panicking because you've done so much
0:35:04 > 0:35:09and it's like sort of bespoke, it's going to look really good.
0:35:09 > 0:35:13That gave me some hope so...
0:35:13 > 0:35:15Actually, I'm going to remember that,
0:35:15 > 0:35:17hold on to it and use it to spur me on.
0:35:18 > 0:35:22I'm a bit worried now that mine's sort of...
0:35:24 > 0:35:27..I haven't put enough effort in, maybe, I'm not sure.
0:35:29 > 0:35:32Craig isn't just having a crisis of confidence.
0:35:32 > 0:35:36With his carpet laid, the over-bed table is coming in...
0:35:36 > 0:35:38You all right, have you got that in?
0:35:38 > 0:35:41- Push it more towards that side of the door.- ..if it fits.
0:35:41 > 0:35:43That's it. And sort of try and edge it up.
0:35:43 > 0:35:45Who built this?
0:35:47 > 0:35:50Now, can you turn it? Take it in like that.
0:35:50 > 0:35:54It may have fitted up the staircase, but now it must fit in place.
0:35:59 > 0:36:02- That's all right, isn't it?- You got the height right, didn't you?
0:36:07 > 0:36:11- There we go, Anne. - Oh, that's wonderful.
0:36:11 > 0:36:14Storage is coming together in her Japanese room,
0:36:14 > 0:36:17but Anne still needs to decorate it.
0:36:17 > 0:36:19Above here is going to be a patchwork
0:36:19 > 0:36:21of kimono printed patterns.
0:36:22 > 0:36:25So, we're just going to spray mount it
0:36:25 > 0:36:26and put it on the wall.
0:36:26 > 0:36:30Anne hopes to protect the wallpaper with a layer of varnish.
0:36:30 > 0:36:31Do you know what?
0:36:31 > 0:36:33If I was an eight-year-old,
0:36:33 > 0:36:36I think I'd flip me bonce looking at that.
0:36:38 > 0:36:41What is it you like about the making and the doing of stuff?
0:36:41 > 0:36:45I really respond to what I have in front of me.
0:36:45 > 0:36:50I do plan a bit, but it's quite loose in a way.
0:36:50 > 0:36:52So, I like to discover things as I'm going.
0:36:52 > 0:36:54- So, it's been a learning cur... - Oh, yeah.
0:36:54 > 0:36:57- That's what you like about... - That's what I like about it.
0:36:57 > 0:36:58That's what I like about it.
0:36:58 > 0:37:01I'd be disappointed if I started and finished
0:37:01 > 0:37:03and hadn't learnt something in between.
0:37:05 > 0:37:07Well, the varnished wallpaper
0:37:07 > 0:37:12is definitely teaching Anne a thing or two as it's ruined the prints.
0:37:12 > 0:37:16It's just buckling, so, you know, hopefully it'll dry out all right.
0:37:16 > 0:37:19I wanted to protect it a bit with a layer of varnish,
0:37:19 > 0:37:21but the varnish has made it pucker,
0:37:21 > 0:37:23so, I'll have to think of something, quick.
0:37:23 > 0:37:25Anne is already behind schedule.
0:37:28 > 0:37:31That bit should just pull off.
0:37:31 > 0:37:34So, her quickest solution is to start from scratch.
0:37:35 > 0:37:36And we're doing it again.
0:37:43 > 0:37:45Our amateur designers may be adapting these rooms
0:37:45 > 0:37:47to fit the current owners' needs,
0:37:47 > 0:37:51but the origins of these buildings are never far from sight.
0:37:52 > 0:37:53Inside the houses,
0:37:53 > 0:37:58the fabric from pillars to beams to plasterboard ceiling panels,
0:37:58 > 0:38:01it's all on display, you can see exactly how these houses were built.
0:38:01 > 0:38:04The original self-builders could have chosen the internal layout
0:38:04 > 0:38:08however they wanted and still to this day, you can move doors
0:38:08 > 0:38:09and walls and windows wherever you like.
0:38:12 > 0:38:15You'll find this crossbeam at the heart of all the homes.
0:38:15 > 0:38:16Without it, these lightweight houses
0:38:16 > 0:38:18would flex in the wind,
0:38:18 > 0:38:20but this really braces it together and stops it,
0:38:20 > 0:38:22pretty much, from falling down.
0:38:23 > 0:38:26Some might look at them and think they're a bit plain or austere,
0:38:26 > 0:38:29but I think there's a beauty in their functionality.
0:38:36 > 0:38:40Our designers are yet to achieve beauty or function in their schemes,
0:38:40 > 0:38:42and it's already the end of day two.
0:38:42 > 0:38:45It's a little bit of panic stations.
0:38:45 > 0:38:47I'm like a duck at the moment.
0:38:47 > 0:38:48I look all calm on the top,
0:38:48 > 0:38:53but my little legs are going ten to the dozen underneath the surface.
0:38:53 > 0:38:55Nadia has a long to-do list.
0:38:56 > 0:39:00I need to put blinds up, I need to get the rope in,
0:39:00 > 0:39:01I need to do the floor.
0:39:01 > 0:39:04With time running out, her team steps in.
0:39:04 > 0:39:06Something's going to have to slip,
0:39:06 > 0:39:09but it's up to you to, you know, decide.
0:39:09 > 0:39:11I've already, you know, mentioned it a couple of times,
0:39:11 > 0:39:14"I'm going to do the floor, I'm going to do the floor,"
0:39:14 > 0:39:15but I do understand something's got to give.
0:39:15 > 0:39:18'So I think tomorrow is going to be sort of...'
0:39:18 > 0:39:20putting it all together.
0:39:20 > 0:39:23Might be a bit manic, but that's what it's all about.
0:39:24 > 0:39:27I don't think I've ever been this tired.
0:39:27 > 0:39:30But I trust that when I come back in the morning,
0:39:30 > 0:39:32that I'll feel pretty refreshed
0:39:32 > 0:39:36and be able to have a bit more energy to make it look a bit fab.
0:39:43 > 0:39:45It's the start of day three.
0:39:45 > 0:39:48Later on today, the homeowners and the judges
0:39:48 > 0:39:50will see the finished rooms for the first time
0:39:50 > 0:39:53and give their feedback, so the pressure's on.
0:39:53 > 0:39:54At the end of today,
0:39:54 > 0:39:58one of the four designers will leave the competition.
0:39:58 > 0:40:00I would love to get through, especially with all the slog
0:40:00 > 0:40:04I've done over the last few days. I would love it, absolutely love it.
0:40:04 > 0:40:07I'm a bit concerned about the finish of the room.
0:40:07 > 0:40:10I really need to just make it sharp
0:40:10 > 0:40:13because I'm not doing the floor, I really don't have any time.
0:40:13 > 0:40:17I haven't got long. And I thought I had longer and I didn't,
0:40:17 > 0:40:19so I've got to just do what I can do.
0:40:20 > 0:40:24Feeling a bit tired but ready to crack on.
0:40:26 > 0:40:29It's the last few hours for Talie to prove her Moroccan scheme
0:40:29 > 0:40:32is innovative enough, but there's a problem.
0:40:32 > 0:40:35Ideally, the door was going to be red.
0:40:35 > 0:40:38Unfortunately, I ran out of paint.
0:40:38 > 0:40:42So...yeah, more blue.
0:40:42 > 0:40:45So, Talie was going to give us splashes of bright Moroccan colour,
0:40:45 > 0:40:46has she delivered that?
0:40:46 > 0:40:48Splashes? There's more than splashes.
0:40:48 > 0:40:51There's a hell of a lot of blue going in that room.
0:40:51 > 0:40:53And, you know, this brief, it's all about being experimental
0:40:53 > 0:40:57and innovative and creative. We're yet to really see it.
0:40:57 > 0:40:59She's very competent, she's very professional,
0:40:59 > 0:41:02the finish is good, but are we going to see the pizzazz at the end?
0:41:04 > 0:41:06The list of jobs in Nadia's room
0:41:06 > 0:41:08doesn't seem to be getting much shorter.
0:41:08 > 0:41:11We still need to hang the rope to make it look as if the beds
0:41:11 > 0:41:14are hanging from the tree in a swing-like motion.
0:41:14 > 0:41:18It's all systems go right now, though, so I'm literally a bit
0:41:18 > 0:41:21worried about when that's going to get done.
0:41:21 > 0:41:23So, what's Nadia's magical wonderland looking like?
0:41:23 > 0:41:26Well, exactly, it should be looking magical by now.
0:41:26 > 0:41:28OK, she's got the beds built,
0:41:28 > 0:41:30but it's still just looking a bit wooden
0:41:30 > 0:41:31and I'm just not able to see it.
0:41:33 > 0:41:36The artistic details are the priority for Anne.
0:41:36 > 0:41:39Instead of dealing with the bigger picture of storage,
0:41:39 > 0:41:40she's working on a smaller one.
0:41:40 > 0:41:43I'm going to sketch out some
0:41:43 > 0:41:47cherry blossom on the wall here.
0:41:47 > 0:41:50So, Anne, cherry blossom, how's that working out?
0:41:50 > 0:41:53Our biggest concern is - is she really going to get it finished
0:41:53 > 0:41:55to a nice, high standard on time?
0:41:55 > 0:41:58That's always been the big question with her.
0:41:59 > 0:42:02The big question in Craig's relaxing retreat is -
0:42:02 > 0:42:04is he using too much orange?
0:42:06 > 0:42:07Talk about orange.
0:42:09 > 0:42:12It's very luminous so I'm going to have to try
0:42:12 > 0:42:15and disguise the fact that it's a bit luminous.
0:42:15 > 0:42:19I have a throw, that might be going over it. Sort of dull it down a bit.
0:42:21 > 0:42:25Has Craig's light, bright adult retreat finally materialised yet?
0:42:25 > 0:42:28It's orange and it's rough wood and it's chevron prints,
0:42:28 > 0:42:29and I think it looks fab,
0:42:29 > 0:42:31but I don't think it's what they asked for.
0:42:34 > 0:42:38Our designers have had three days and £1,000 to transform a room each.
0:42:40 > 0:42:43They're being judged on their presentation skills
0:42:43 > 0:42:46and had to prove they can think fast under pressure
0:42:46 > 0:42:49to come up with an innovative new use for a flat-pack stool.
0:42:51 > 0:42:53Now, their time is almost up.
0:42:54 > 0:42:56For Craig, having worked
0:42:56 > 0:42:58so hard to convince his homeowners on the orange,
0:42:58 > 0:43:01the final moments are all about making sure
0:43:01 > 0:43:03it doesn't overwhelm the room.
0:43:03 > 0:43:05Much more lively.
0:43:06 > 0:43:09I feel like I need a bit more orange in here,
0:43:09 > 0:43:10surprisingly.
0:43:19 > 0:43:22Craig's brief was to create a tranquil retreat for grown-ups.
0:43:24 > 0:43:27Three days ago, the room was basic with an awkward layout.
0:43:33 > 0:43:36Now it's got a contemporary feel.
0:43:36 > 0:43:38Craig's muted grey scheme
0:43:38 > 0:43:41is complemented with bursts of burnt orange.
0:43:42 > 0:43:45He's added natural wooden accessories to soften
0:43:45 > 0:43:47the look of the room
0:43:47 > 0:43:52and built a central over-bed table, also in his signature orange.
0:43:54 > 0:43:57I think their sort of concern with the boldness of the orange
0:43:57 > 0:44:01and the zigzags is sort of going to go away because it is very subtle.
0:44:06 > 0:44:08This is so well put together, isn't it?
0:44:08 > 0:44:09I must say, I do like the orange,
0:44:09 > 0:44:12it does have an air of sophistication,
0:44:12 > 0:44:13and yet it's also uplifting.
0:44:13 > 0:44:15I'm just aware that she said
0:44:15 > 0:44:18she didn't want it to feel kiddie-like in here,
0:44:18 > 0:44:20and bright oranges can look quite childish.
0:44:20 > 0:44:23But teamed with the grey, I agree with you,
0:44:23 > 0:44:25it looks very sophisticated.
0:44:25 > 0:44:30Now, in the brief, they wanted a computer desk for their bed...
0:44:30 > 0:44:31This isn't bad.
0:44:31 > 0:44:36Well, it's supposed to move... Ahh, you know what's happened here?
0:44:36 > 0:44:39There are wheels on this, but this lovely deep pile carpet
0:44:39 > 0:44:42is stopping it from moving.
0:44:42 > 0:44:45It's also the moment of truth to see how well
0:44:45 > 0:44:48Craig's upcycled flat-pack stool fits with the scheme.
0:44:48 > 0:44:51We know they needed storage for their books,
0:44:51 > 0:44:54- so I think that's a good use of what was given to him.- Really good.
0:44:54 > 0:44:57It's a little bit of lateral thinking that we were expecting.
0:44:57 > 0:45:02So, the big ask of this room was to be a complete sanctuary,
0:45:02 > 0:45:03child-free zone.
0:45:03 > 0:45:05I think he's just about got away with it.
0:45:05 > 0:45:07Although, I must admit, I'd put a lock on the door
0:45:07 > 0:45:09and then they can't get in.
0:45:10 > 0:45:14How well each designer fulfils their homeowner's brief is crucial
0:45:14 > 0:45:16to the judges' decision.
0:45:16 > 0:45:20I think they'll like it. I hope they like it anyway.
0:45:22 > 0:45:25- SHE GASPS - Oh, wow.- Come on through.
0:45:25 > 0:45:27Oh, wow. This is amazing.
0:45:27 > 0:45:29So, Craig convinced you to have this orange.
0:45:29 > 0:45:31- Yes, he did. - What do you think about it now?
0:45:31 > 0:45:34I do like it and I'm glad he kind of challenged me a bit.
0:45:34 > 0:45:36It does feel a lot more sophisticated and, yeah,
0:45:36 > 0:45:38he was right.
0:45:38 > 0:45:39Good on you, Craig.
0:45:43 > 0:45:45Now, Talie's time is almost up.
0:45:45 > 0:45:48And after the earlier battle of wills over all the blue,
0:45:48 > 0:45:51she's relying on finishing touches to add warmth.
0:45:51 > 0:45:56I'm definitely happy with the lamps, it will give a beautiful pattern.
0:45:59 > 0:46:01I think it looks lovely. I really do.
0:46:03 > 0:46:06Talie's homeowners asked for a creative Moroccan scheme
0:46:06 > 0:46:08with spicy colours.
0:46:09 > 0:46:11Before, the room was plain and simple.
0:46:16 > 0:46:19Now, it's a colourful master bedroom.
0:46:20 > 0:46:23Talie has used a teal blue across walls and furniture
0:46:23 > 0:46:25with red and mustard accents.
0:46:27 > 0:46:31She's used subtle Moroccan patterns in the wardrobe and wall panels...
0:46:33 > 0:46:37And dressed the room with bedside lighting and quirky accessories.
0:46:37 > 0:46:40I'm so nervous about the judges going in the room.
0:46:40 > 0:46:44It's been a hard, hard slog but definitely worth it.
0:46:48 > 0:46:51The brief was for a warm and spicy colour palette.
0:46:51 > 0:46:55I quite like it, it's a warm blue, it opens up the space.
0:46:55 > 0:46:58But, you know, she promised that she was going to add all these warm
0:46:58 > 0:47:00and spicy colours with the accessories
0:47:00 > 0:47:03and it's just a little bit of red and a little bit of yellow.
0:47:03 > 0:47:05I do like that wallpaper on the panels there,
0:47:05 > 0:47:07I think that works really well.
0:47:07 > 0:47:11One place Talie has added accent colour is her upcycled shelf.
0:47:11 > 0:47:14I always like that piece of wood, it always looks great, you know,
0:47:14 > 0:47:15with the cross on it.
0:47:15 > 0:47:18There's something rather nice about it. And she's taken that onboard
0:47:18 > 0:47:21and, I think, done something which is rather nice.
0:47:21 > 0:47:24It's not completely rocking my world of thinking out-of-the-box,
0:47:24 > 0:47:26mad creativity, but it is useful.
0:47:26 > 0:47:28There's a little level of creativity -
0:47:28 > 0:47:31I know that she made these. It's rather effective.
0:47:31 > 0:47:34But, you know, this was a brief that asked for experimentation
0:47:34 > 0:47:37and something artistic, and it is a little bit
0:47:37 > 0:47:40sort of colouring in by numbers.
0:47:41 > 0:47:44I think the room looks lovely, I don't think there's too much blue,
0:47:44 > 0:47:48I'm really looking forward to the homeowners seeing it.
0:47:48 > 0:47:50- Wow.- Oh, wow.
0:47:50 > 0:47:54- Colours work really well.- Yeah. It's a nice blue.
0:47:54 > 0:47:56It really does bring out the wood.
0:47:56 > 0:47:58What about the Moroccan touches?
0:47:58 > 0:48:00I know Ian loves it, but for me,
0:48:00 > 0:48:03it could have been a little bit more...wow.
0:48:05 > 0:48:07That's done.
0:48:07 > 0:48:09Next due to finish is Nadia,
0:48:09 > 0:48:12whose fourth place after the client presentation
0:48:12 > 0:48:14is still playing on her mind.
0:48:14 > 0:48:16I'm not going to lose.
0:48:16 > 0:48:18I have to have this in my head that I'm not going to lose
0:48:18 > 0:48:20so I don't, to be honest.
0:48:20 > 0:48:23She must bring the magic to her woodland scheme
0:48:23 > 0:48:25in the final minutes.
0:48:25 > 0:48:28I want to give the effect of fireflies being caught in jars,
0:48:28 > 0:48:32so I'm literally just hopefully going to deposit this in here
0:48:32 > 0:48:33and hide the battery pack.
0:48:40 > 0:48:43I am hot, I smell
0:48:43 > 0:48:46and I really need to just stand in the breeze right now.
0:48:46 > 0:48:49SHE SIGHS
0:48:49 > 0:48:51Nadia's brief was to create a magical woodland
0:48:51 > 0:48:53for two young sisters.
0:48:54 > 0:48:58Before, it was a functional guest bedroom, lacking personality.
0:49:05 > 0:49:09Now it's a spacious bedroom with playful character.
0:49:09 > 0:49:11Nadia's tree centrepiece gives the illusion
0:49:11 > 0:49:15of two swinging beds, against soft-green walls.
0:49:17 > 0:49:21She's exposed the floorboards, added tree-shaped shelving
0:49:21 > 0:49:24and placed wooden accessories around the room.
0:49:25 > 0:49:28I'm hoping the judges will say,
0:49:28 > 0:49:31"Wow, transformation, this looks amazing.
0:49:31 > 0:49:32"Nadia's number one."
0:49:36 > 0:49:39This is a great piece of design, these kind of suspended beds
0:49:39 > 0:49:41within this sort of tree silhouette.
0:49:41 > 0:49:43I think it's absolutely brilliant
0:49:43 > 0:49:47and it definitely encapsulates that sense of playfulness.
0:49:47 > 0:49:50But I think that it needs to be a little bit more
0:49:50 > 0:49:51obviously a tree.
0:49:51 > 0:49:53At the moment, it just does look like plywood.
0:49:53 > 0:49:56In other words, they could have painted it and then treated it
0:49:56 > 0:49:59almost like a mural that becomes three-dimensional.
0:49:59 > 0:50:01For me, I just feel that this space is lacking the love.
0:50:01 > 0:50:05One thing Nadia did dedicate love to was her upcycled stool.
0:50:06 > 0:50:09I love the idea, but if we hadn't produced that step,
0:50:09 > 0:50:11then there would have been no table in here
0:50:11 > 0:50:14and the thing starts to feel a little bit bare.
0:50:14 > 0:50:17I mean, for example, that could have been so much bigger
0:50:17 > 0:50:20and they could've had lots of sort of work things and display things.
0:50:20 > 0:50:24I think what we've got here is some really good basic design.
0:50:24 > 0:50:27But I just feel like it's lacking detail.
0:50:27 > 0:50:29We know she's hugely creative,
0:50:29 > 0:50:31but I'm definitely not getting that feel of magic.
0:50:34 > 0:50:37I think the girls are going to be so impressed with their room.
0:50:37 > 0:50:40They've got places to hide, store things.
0:50:40 > 0:50:43Any child, I hope, would be proud of that room.
0:50:43 > 0:50:46- Come in, ladies.- Wow.
0:50:46 > 0:50:50- Go on, give them a go. - Wow, look at this.
0:50:50 > 0:50:53- You can't see, but we've got a hole. - Oh, my goodness!
0:50:53 > 0:50:56- Hello! - These two look pretty happy.
0:50:56 > 0:50:58They look extremely happy, don't they?
0:50:58 > 0:51:02I think she's done really well and met the brief brilliantly.
0:51:04 > 0:51:07Finally, Anne's pulling together the last elements
0:51:07 > 0:51:09of her sophisticated Japanese scheme.
0:51:09 > 0:51:11- So, that's right at the bottom of the door.- Yeah, yeah.
0:51:11 > 0:51:13Hanging it, hang on. Oh, sorry.
0:51:13 > 0:51:16There's sweat running down my back at the moment.
0:51:16 > 0:51:19Sorry, I'm perspiring.
0:51:25 > 0:51:26Oh.
0:51:26 > 0:51:30Her time is up, but she hasn't quite finished.
0:51:30 > 0:51:33Well, yes, I've still got some finishing off to do
0:51:33 > 0:51:35and get the doors on that we've made.
0:51:35 > 0:51:39We ran out of time. But I guess that's part of the learning process.
0:51:39 > 0:51:43Anne was asked to create a Japanese-influenced room
0:51:43 > 0:51:44for a nine-year-old.
0:51:45 > 0:51:48Three days ago, the room was cluttered and chaotic.
0:51:55 > 0:51:58Now, it's bright and colourful.
0:51:58 > 0:52:02Hand-painted cherry blossom and patchwork wallpaper
0:52:02 > 0:52:04add decorative interest to the room.
0:52:05 > 0:52:08A grown-up beauty corner adds sophistication
0:52:08 > 0:52:12and Anne has crafted her own cushion covers and bunting.
0:52:13 > 0:52:16Even if the wardrobe doors haven't been fitted.
0:52:20 > 0:52:22Our fear was this was all wonderful and creative
0:52:22 > 0:52:26and lots of energy and thought gone into all the sort of furnishings,
0:52:26 > 0:52:28but it isn't quite a finished project.
0:52:28 > 0:52:30Let's just forgive her for a second
0:52:30 > 0:52:32and let's just think about the things that she's designed.
0:52:32 > 0:52:35To ask for a dressing table and storage and a desk
0:52:35 > 0:52:39and a sofa and a spare bed for friends in this tiny room,
0:52:39 > 0:52:41she's delivered on all of that, well done.
0:52:41 > 0:52:45Delivered on all that, but what about the upcycled stool?
0:52:45 > 0:52:49She's tied it in nicely with her scheme, but it's very decorative,
0:52:49 > 0:52:52it's not particularly experimental or innovative.
0:52:52 > 0:52:55And also it's shoved in the corner with no use whatsoever.
0:52:55 > 0:52:59I think she's spent too long doing all the pretty bits
0:52:59 > 0:53:02and not actually thinking of the overall, bigger picture.
0:53:02 > 0:53:05I think Anna will love sleeping in here.
0:53:05 > 0:53:08Wouldn't you?
0:53:08 > 0:53:09I certainly would.
0:53:12 > 0:53:14- CLAIRE WHISPERS:- Oh, wow.
0:53:14 > 0:53:16Wow, look at that.
0:53:16 > 0:53:19Look at the floor, wow.
0:53:19 > 0:53:21I wasn't expecting it to be on the floor.
0:53:21 > 0:53:23No. Oh, look at the bunting.
0:53:23 > 0:53:25Presumably there are doors made.
0:53:25 > 0:53:27I was a bit worried right at the beginning
0:53:27 > 0:53:30whether she would achieve it all, cos it's very ambitious.
0:53:35 > 0:53:38With nothing more to be done, it's the long wait to find out
0:53:38 > 0:53:41who will stay and which one will go.
0:53:41 > 0:53:44I don't want to go through to the next round,
0:53:44 > 0:53:46I need to go through to the next round.
0:53:46 > 0:53:52The idea of doing it all again is pretty full-on.
0:53:52 > 0:53:56I am pretty competitive so, yeah, I definitely want to go through.
0:53:56 > 0:54:01I really, really want to succeed in hopefully having
0:54:01 > 0:54:03a career in interior design.
0:54:07 > 0:54:10Now, Craig seems like a capable soul. Did he deliver?
0:54:10 > 0:54:13I think he styled the room beautifully.
0:54:13 > 0:54:15But, you know, maybe a bit magazine tear sheet,
0:54:15 > 0:54:18and that makes me worry a little bit about Craig.
0:54:18 > 0:54:20I mean, he's somebody who just creates a look
0:54:20 > 0:54:22rather than designed for a specific individual.
0:54:22 > 0:54:24Well, homeowners love the orange,
0:54:24 > 0:54:26they love being taken out of their comfort zone...
0:54:26 > 0:54:28Well, he's done the job of an interior designer -
0:54:28 > 0:54:32he's answered the brief and he's exceeded their expectations.
0:54:32 > 0:54:34What about Nadia? What did you make of her design?
0:54:34 > 0:54:36To come up with the idea of having that sort of tree
0:54:36 > 0:54:40with the beds hidden behind was beautiful.
0:54:40 > 0:54:42It just needed a little bit more done with it.
0:54:42 > 0:54:44- Well, the kids adored it. - You know what?
0:54:44 > 0:54:47This is a creative family, maybe they like the idea
0:54:47 > 0:54:50that it's all there for them, but they can now embellish.
0:54:50 > 0:54:52So, you two loved Talie in her presentation,
0:54:52 > 0:54:53you gave her top marks.
0:54:53 > 0:54:55We knew what that room was going to look like,
0:54:55 > 0:54:56and that's what it looked like.
0:54:56 > 0:54:59But what I want to know is, what do the homeowners think of the colour?
0:54:59 > 0:55:02They weren't phased by the colour, they quite liked the colour.
0:55:02 > 0:55:05But she didn't feel like she'd been taken out of our comfort zone
0:55:05 > 0:55:07- and given anything new and extra. - I mean, Tom, none of us
0:55:07 > 0:55:10were taken out of our comfort zone in that room. We said it all along,
0:55:10 > 0:55:13she's not showing us anything we haven't seen already.
0:55:13 > 0:55:15Now, Anne was after this kind of Japanese cherry blossom,
0:55:15 > 0:55:17that's quite a brief.
0:55:17 > 0:55:18Did she achieve it?
0:55:18 > 0:55:21She did so much original stuff - making and doing
0:55:21 > 0:55:26and one-off pieces - which made that project feel very creative.
0:55:26 > 0:55:27But that's where she fell down too.
0:55:27 > 0:55:30She got caught up on the detail and failed to manage the bigger picture.
0:55:30 > 0:55:32Well, interesting you should say that.
0:55:32 > 0:55:34The homeowners picked up on the problems - the practical,
0:55:34 > 0:55:36the fact it wasn't finished.
0:55:36 > 0:55:38- We loved the creativity and all the design...- Yeah.
0:55:38 > 0:55:41- ..but those practical items. - I mean, we picked up on those too.
0:55:41 > 0:55:43Well, one of them's going home today,
0:55:43 > 0:55:44so which one's it going to be?
0:55:52 > 0:55:54The spirit of self-build Walter Segal style
0:55:54 > 0:55:56is all about rolling your sleeves up, doing it yourself
0:55:56 > 0:55:59and being completely transformed by the experience.
0:55:59 > 0:56:01I think all four of you have experienced
0:56:01 > 0:56:02some kind of transformation.
0:56:02 > 0:56:04I know the homeowners definitely have.
0:56:04 > 0:56:06And it's been especially hard for all four of you
0:56:06 > 0:56:09because those rooms are actually particularly small.
0:56:09 > 0:56:13Also asking all of you to be original and creative.
0:56:13 > 0:56:17And well done, you've all really risen to the challenge.
0:56:19 > 0:56:23So, the designer going home this time is...

0:56:30 > 0:56:31OK.
0:56:32 > 0:56:33It's all right.
0:56:36 > 0:56:39'I'm really upset by that cos I feel like'
0:56:39 > 0:56:43I tried to create more of a concept than some of the other designers.

0:56:45 > 0:56:47None of them.
0:56:49 > 0:56:52Nadia has the potential to be a great designer,
0:56:52 > 0:56:54she's really creative and very original.
0:56:54 > 0:56:58But I could see that she'd actually missed out on some basic essentials.
0:56:58 > 0:57:01Oh, thank you, thank you.
0:57:01 > 0:57:03- You've done very well. - NADIA LAUGHS

0:57:19 > 0:57:23but she runs in danger of stifling her creativity.
0:57:23 > 0:57:27In the next round, I just want to see her let go.
0:57:28 > 0:57:29- Well done. - Group hug, group hug.

0:57:41 > 0:57:45and her love of detail makes her a really special designer.
0:57:45 > 0:57:48But if she's going to move much further forward in this competition,
0:57:48 > 0:57:51she has got to get her head around the bigger picture
0:57:51 > 0:57:53and view a room as a whole.
0:57:53 > 0:57:54- I got through.- Yay!
0:57:54 > 0:57:58- Oh, that's fantastic, excellent. - Well done.
0:57:58 > 0:58:01Yeah, I feel brilliant, I got through to the next round so,
0:58:01 > 0:58:02yeah, it's exciting.

0:58:06 > 0:58:10is how is HE going to cope when the brief takes him out of his.
