0:00:02 > 0:00:05I'm constantly taken aback by the huge variety of property

0:00:05 > 0:00:09styles in Britain - from character-filled timber-framed cottages,

0:00:09 > 0:00:10to grand townhouses.

0:00:10 > 0:00:13But sometimes the insides don't live up to the

0:00:13 > 0:00:15expectations on the outside.

0:00:15 > 0:00:19So we've gathered together the most talented amateur interior designers

0:00:19 > 0:00:22who think they could be the next big thing to show us how it's done.

0:00:22 > 0:00:24But it's not as easy as it looks.

0:00:24 > 0:00:25Argh!

0:00:25 > 0:00:28- I've got self-doubt creeping in. - Yes!

0:00:28 > 0:00:31Across three knockout episodes, a group of designers will

0:00:31 > 0:00:34compete for one place in finals week.

0:00:34 > 0:00:38- It feels like there's so much to do.- No pressure!

0:00:38 > 0:00:40Good job! Like it.

0:00:40 > 0:00:43Judging them, two industry experts.

0:00:43 > 0:00:44Daniel Hopwood...

0:00:44 > 0:00:46'Having survived round one,'

0:00:46 > 0:00:49I want to see that the designers have listened to our feedback.

0:00:49 > 0:00:50..and Sophie Robinson.

0:00:50 > 0:00:51'They are going to have to take'

0:00:51 > 0:00:53it up a notch if they're going

0:00:53 > 0:00:54to stay in this competition.

0:00:54 > 0:00:57They'll be scrutinising presentation skills...

0:00:57 > 0:00:59That is not the way to present to somebody.

0:00:59 > 0:01:01..artistic flair...

0:01:01 > 0:01:03Have you ever seen that done before?

0:01:03 > 0:01:04No, it's weird.

0:01:04 > 0:01:07..and how well they deliver their brief.

0:01:07 > 0:01:09Pretty amazing transformation.

0:01:09 > 0:01:10Absolutely beautiful.

0:01:10 > 0:01:14In the finals, the best will face giants of the design world.

0:01:14 > 0:01:15Oliver Heath....

0:01:15 > 0:01:16Oh, my word!

0:01:16 > 0:01:18..Orla Kiely...

0:01:18 > 0:01:19It does look quite rough.

0:01:19 > 0:01:21..and Kelly Hoppen.

0:01:21 > 0:01:23I want perfection.

0:01:23 > 0:01:27But only one can be crowned winner of The Great Interior Design Challenge.

0:01:33 > 0:01:36Last time, four designers fought to impress the judges.

0:01:36 > 0:01:38I'm feeling a bit like...argh!

0:01:38 > 0:01:41For me, I just feel that this space is lacking a lot.

0:01:41 > 0:01:44One went home, three made it through.

0:01:44 > 0:01:47I got through to the next round, so yeah, it's exciting.

0:01:47 > 0:01:51It's been a hard slog, but definitely worth it.

0:01:51 > 0:01:55The idea of doing it all again is pretty full-on.

0:01:55 > 0:01:58Now, the second round will be even tougher.

0:01:58 > 0:02:01Our amateurs will be redesigning the reception rooms of three

0:02:01 > 0:02:04Arts and Crafts houses in the model village of Bournville.

0:02:04 > 0:02:07The clients more exacting...

0:02:07 > 0:02:10Through the mood board, it looks quite traditional.

0:02:10 > 0:02:11..the briefs more challenging...

0:02:11 > 0:02:14They want creative, so they're going to get it

0:02:14 > 0:02:15slapped in their face!

0:02:15 > 0:02:17..and the judges' expectations higher.

0:02:17 > 0:02:21There's no relationship with that and the rest of the scheme at all.

0:02:21 > 0:02:23What has happened in here?

0:02:23 > 0:02:25As the designers battle it out...

0:02:25 > 0:02:26I can't deny, I'm worried.

0:02:26 > 0:02:29..to make it through to the next round.

0:02:29 > 0:02:32The designer not going through is...

0:02:39 > 0:02:44This peaceful picturesque village is actually a suburb in Birmingham,

0:02:44 > 0:02:47built at the end of the late 19th century by the entrepreneurial

0:02:47 > 0:02:50Cadbury family for workers at their Bournville factory

0:02:50 > 0:02:53and local middle-class professionals.

0:02:53 > 0:02:57Complete with a central green, a cricket pavilion and timber-framed

0:02:57 > 0:03:00houses, it's a Victorian reimagining of a traditional village.

0:03:00 > 0:03:03Now our three amateurs must deliver a reception room each

0:03:03 > 0:03:06that lives up to the Arts and Crafts style.

0:03:13 > 0:03:16The last things to do will be there and there.

0:03:16 > 0:03:19The designers have been planning their schemes for the past week,

0:03:19 > 0:03:22based on a brief provided by their homeowners.

0:03:22 > 0:03:26I don't think it's complex for you, but it's important...is the fire.

0:03:26 > 0:03:29I feel confident that I've thoroughly read the brief.

0:03:29 > 0:03:33I've tried to match the brief to who I am.

0:03:33 > 0:03:35Now, to help put those plans into action,

0:03:35 > 0:03:39they've each got a small team, including a builder and a decorator.

0:03:39 > 0:03:40I'm going to paint them all white

0:03:40 > 0:03:44- and then put the fabric behind where you've cut the music notes out. - Oh, right, OK.

0:03:44 > 0:03:47Feel fantastic about making it to the second round.

0:03:47 > 0:03:52The other designers are really good but I think I'm better.

0:03:52 > 0:03:54They also have a budget of £1,000

0:03:54 > 0:03:58and three days to make their transformations.

0:03:58 > 0:04:00I'll take out all these cobwebs, all right?

0:04:00 > 0:04:02So you've got a bit more of a clean base to work on.

0:04:02 > 0:04:07This design is not safe for me at all, because it's not really my personal taste.

0:04:07 > 0:04:11You know, if I pull this off, I'll be really pleased with myself.

0:04:11 > 0:04:13Our first designer is 44-year-old Talie,

0:04:13 > 0:04:16a furniture restyler from Buckinghamshire.

0:04:16 > 0:04:19- I've got polystyrene coving. - Oh, OK.

0:04:19 > 0:04:21Yeah, nice and easy and I've got the adhesive for it, as well.

0:04:21 > 0:04:22- Oh, you have. Oh, OK.- Yeah.

0:04:22 > 0:04:24It's hard to criticise Talie.

0:04:24 > 0:04:27She did a good design to a high standard

0:04:27 > 0:04:29but in order for her to make her mark in this competition,

0:04:29 > 0:04:32she's going to have to get a lot more creative.

0:04:32 > 0:04:35Talie will be showcasing her creativity in a living room

0:04:35 > 0:04:38that was all shades of beige, which judges Sophie

0:04:38 > 0:04:41and Daniel took a look at before Talie got started.

0:04:41 > 0:04:43Oh, these are rather big beasts, aren't they?

0:04:43 > 0:04:46This room could be greatly improved with a better layout.

0:04:46 > 0:04:48We could make this work better

0:04:48 > 0:04:52if there was a clever little bit of spatial planning going on in this room.

0:04:52 > 0:04:55The big challenge is how to deal with the television.

0:04:55 > 0:04:57Talie's been asked to bring in some bling

0:04:57 > 0:05:00with a glamorous and decadent design.

0:05:00 > 0:05:02This is a really exciting brief for Talie.

0:05:02 > 0:05:07I mean, this is the opportunity for her to unleash her creativity.

0:05:07 > 0:05:10So Talie is going for gold, quite literally

0:05:10 > 0:05:14with a champagne and purple colour scheme against a new cream carpet.

0:05:14 > 0:05:17She plans to add sparkle with a drop chandelier,

0:05:17 > 0:05:20and assortment of gilt mirrors and frames -

0:05:20 > 0:05:24all of which she explained to her client, Dawn, before she got going.

0:05:24 > 0:05:30This is the opulent, sophisticated hotel-chic mood board.

0:05:30 > 0:05:34Talie knows she needs to impress, as Sophie and Daniel will be judging

0:05:34 > 0:05:38each client presentation once all three designers have pitched.

0:05:38 > 0:05:40This is going to be your colour scheme.

0:05:40 > 0:05:42You're going to have a deep rich aubergine.

0:05:42 > 0:05:46You're going to have a metallic wallpaper on the top,

0:05:46 > 0:05:50the champagne, where it will really pick up the lighting here.

0:05:50 > 0:05:52- Fantastic.- TV...- Yeah.

0:05:52 > 0:05:54Hopefully will go on the wall

0:05:54 > 0:05:57and what I'm going to do is disguise the TV and make

0:05:57 > 0:06:02- it into a picture frame, so you're going to have like a gilt mirror... - Oh!- ..around the frame.- Fabulous.

0:06:02 > 0:06:05I thought what a good layout would be is actually having

0:06:05 > 0:06:07- the sofas facing each other. - Yeah.

0:06:07 > 0:06:10I've got you an old coffee table but don't worry,

0:06:10 > 0:06:15- it's not going to stay like that. - OK.- It's going to be painted. - It's perfect.

0:06:15 > 0:06:16- It is.- I feel like crying!

0:06:16 > 0:06:19THEY LAUGH

0:06:19 > 0:06:23The level of glamour, I'm all for it being on a number ten.

0:06:23 > 0:06:25'And she's hit the nail on the head.'

0:06:25 > 0:06:29Dawn's dazzled - but will the judges be?

0:06:29 > 0:06:33Well, I like the colour scheme. And I kind of don't mind the layout.

0:06:33 > 0:06:35It's pretty tried and tested.

0:06:35 > 0:06:37We're not seeing anything new here.

0:06:37 > 0:06:41My concerns are that she's meeting the client's expectations

0:06:41 > 0:06:44but a great designer gives more than that.

0:06:44 > 0:06:48Well, Talie's hoping she is giving more by banishing that beige

0:06:48 > 0:06:52with dark aubergine but her decorator has spotted a problem.

0:06:52 > 0:06:55- How much paint have you got? - I've got that tin I gave you.

0:06:55 > 0:07:00- It's a five-litre tin.- Five-litre tin?- Yeah.- So you've got that wall. - Yeah.- That wall.- That.

0:07:01 > 0:07:05I don't know if you're going to have enough, to be fair.

0:07:05 > 0:07:07If it takes two coats, you may just scrape through.

0:07:07 > 0:07:09- If it takes three coats, you won't. - Right.

0:07:09 > 0:07:12I did think about buying a grey, to go on first.

0:07:12 > 0:07:14Would that be better?

0:07:14 > 0:07:16It depends how dark you want the colour to be.

0:07:16 > 0:07:18It needs to be opulent.

0:07:18 > 0:07:21- I want it like an aubergine, like... - Yeah, yeah.- ..that colour.

0:07:21 > 0:07:25Well, that's one way of matching your colours!

0:07:25 > 0:07:28It's either going to be a marriage made in heaven or hell!

0:07:30 > 0:07:33Our second design challenger is 28-year-old industrial

0:07:33 > 0:07:36textile weaver Craig, from Burnley.

0:07:36 > 0:07:39Just going to see how it dries.

0:07:39 > 0:07:42It's drying fine now but we'll just play it by ear.

0:07:42 > 0:07:43It's fantastic.

0:07:43 > 0:07:46I suspect Craig lucked out in the first round and got to do

0:07:46 > 0:07:49a room design that actually he'd quite like to do in his own home.

0:07:49 > 0:07:52But being a good designer is about being well-rounded

0:07:52 > 0:07:56and versatile and that's what we want to see from him.

0:07:56 > 0:07:59Craig's proving his versatility in a space that was a neglected

0:07:59 > 0:08:02dining-come-music room.

0:08:02 > 0:08:05Ah, the layout in here is rather - shall we say - interesting.

0:08:05 > 0:08:07I know that's obviously a temporary measure -

0:08:07 > 0:08:09garden table with a nice bit of fabric -

0:08:09 > 0:08:13but kind of shoved in the corner? This whole room's just got no flow.

0:08:13 > 0:08:17Craig's homeowners want to get that flow back with a colourful

0:08:17 > 0:08:20and textured Parisian boho scheme.

0:08:20 > 0:08:23I'm really interested to see how Craig is going to interpret this brief.

0:08:23 > 0:08:25I mean, they're wanting something that's pretty on-trend,

0:08:25 > 0:08:28quite high-end, very, very stylish.

0:08:28 > 0:08:31The look that they're after is about clashing colours,

0:08:31 > 0:08:36clashing furniture, and yet, keeping it as one look.

0:08:36 > 0:08:39I wonder how he's going to take on a twist like that.

0:08:39 > 0:08:41Well, he's going to give it a good go.

0:08:41 > 0:08:44Craig's interpretation of bold boho is to bring together

0:08:44 > 0:08:46an eclectic mix of textures,

0:08:46 > 0:08:48fabrics and furniture with a green colour scheme

0:08:48 > 0:08:50and natural lighting elements,

0:08:50 > 0:08:54which he hoped would impress his clients James and Marissa.

0:08:54 > 0:08:56Going for this mint imenzo, it's called.

0:08:56 > 0:08:58Um, a nice, bright colour.

0:08:58 > 0:09:01- That's the green that you're going to use.- It is.

0:09:01 > 0:09:02I mean, I think maybe a touch lighter.

0:09:02 > 0:09:06- I'd prefer a touch lighter. - Yeah, yeah. That's fine, yeah.

0:09:06 > 0:09:10- I can always neutralise it slightly by adding white paint if it's too much.- Yeah.

0:09:10 > 0:09:14Hopefully, if I can still fit your chesterfield-style chair in,

0:09:14 > 0:09:17with your permission, I'd like to try and dye it black.

0:09:17 > 0:09:20From the mood board, it looks quite, um, traditional?

0:09:20 > 0:09:22Yeah, OK.

0:09:22 > 0:09:26I think when you find...when I've sort of created the natural lamps,

0:09:26 > 0:09:30like, the lamp's going to have a very sort of bohemian light-fitting on it.

0:09:30 > 0:09:32I think with the other items that I'm bringing in, I think

0:09:32 > 0:09:35it's really going to look absolutely fantastic in here.

0:09:35 > 0:09:38I'm feeling pretty confident. They seemed to like the design.

0:09:38 > 0:09:41A few odd little changes but, yeah, I think they're happy with it.

0:09:41 > 0:09:42What a beautiful brief.

0:09:42 > 0:09:45There was an opportunity to use some interesting colour combinations

0:09:45 > 0:09:48but, oh, you know, those colours, they're not very exciting.

0:09:48 > 0:09:49Quite old-fashioned.

0:09:49 > 0:09:52And he's dyeing that leather chair into black

0:09:52 > 0:09:55and I'm just wondering why, cos there's no relationship with

0:09:55 > 0:09:57that and the rest of the scheme at all.

0:09:59 > 0:10:02Unaware of the judges' reservations, Craig is cracking on.

0:10:03 > 0:10:07First on the to-do list, a musical makeover for the bookshelf.

0:10:08 > 0:10:10So I want to make two doors for it

0:10:10 > 0:10:14and I'm going to hopefully get you to cut some music notes out.

0:10:14 > 0:10:16That's a music note, is it?

0:10:16 > 0:10:18A Smurf that's been cut off at the waist!

0:10:21 > 0:10:24Our final designer is 60-year-old Anne, a children's author

0:10:24 > 0:10:27and illustrator from Whitburn.

0:10:27 > 0:10:33I'd have been very disappointed to have left after the first round but I was frustrated with my last room.

0:10:33 > 0:10:36There was quite a lot that I didn't achieve.

0:10:36 > 0:10:38Anne is the master of detail,

0:10:38 > 0:10:41I mean, the cushions and textiles she produces are just gorgeous but

0:10:41 > 0:10:45as an interior designer, you really need to think of the whole scheme.

0:10:45 > 0:10:50Anne's hoping to crack the bigger picture in what was a plain sitting room.

0:10:50 > 0:10:52The fireplace looks a bit sad.

0:10:52 > 0:10:55This whole area could do with a little bit more love.

0:10:55 > 0:10:57For me, that window is the hero of the room.

0:10:57 > 0:11:02I think I would have a big rail and have the curtains on the outside.

0:11:02 > 0:11:04- All the way to the floor? - Mm, yeah.

0:11:04 > 0:11:07Anne's been asked to deliver a sophisticated room,

0:11:07 > 0:11:10mixing a traditional feel with a modern edge.

0:11:10 > 0:11:14The homeowners want to celebrate the period features in this

0:11:14 > 0:11:16property but also have quite a contemporary look,

0:11:16 > 0:11:19and blending the two can be quite a challenge.

0:11:19 > 0:11:23Anne's hoping that blend will come with her Arts and Craft inspired scheme,

0:11:23 > 0:11:27featuring a new fireplace centrepiece and window treatment.

0:11:27 > 0:11:31Her nod to modern includes touches like copper-edged shelving,

0:11:31 > 0:11:35ideas she had to run past her clients Olga and John earlier on.

0:11:35 > 0:11:39So, this is the window treatment here, so we've got a pelmet

0:11:39 > 0:11:44that goes across the top and then two shelves that come down either side.

0:11:44 > 0:11:47- I'm going to make a window seat. - M'hm.

0:11:47 > 0:11:51And then if we look at the fireplace with the panel,

0:11:51 > 0:11:54- this is a poster from the RHS.- OK.

0:11:54 > 0:11:56It's a botanical drawing.

0:11:56 > 0:11:59- What do you think of this? - Yeah, I like that.- Do you?

0:11:59 > 0:12:02You don't think it's too passionate and too flowery?

0:12:02 > 0:12:04No, cos it's only a smallish panel.

0:12:04 > 0:12:07These will be details on the cushions.

0:12:07 > 0:12:12And it's the idea of creeping about, sort of, and putting your feet up.

0:12:12 > 0:12:15- That's the bit that I'm most uncertain about.- Uh-huh.

0:12:15 > 0:12:16The slippers and the cushions.

0:12:16 > 0:12:20- Your brief said be creative.- M'hm. - And I'm being creative.

0:12:23 > 0:12:27The design that's being proposed is quite, er...

0:12:27 > 0:12:29It's not contemporary.

0:12:29 > 0:12:31I'm a bit uncertain about the panel and the fireplace

0:12:31 > 0:12:34and the coloured shoes and the cushions.

0:12:34 > 0:12:37Might be a bit twee.

0:12:37 > 0:12:40I think if the homeowners had asked for Arts and Crafts, it could be a winning scheme,

0:12:40 > 0:12:44but they asked for something that incorporated a contemporary look and

0:12:44 > 0:12:47I'm not seeing that at the moment and I don't think they are, either.

0:12:47 > 0:12:49It's going to look like a museum.

0:12:49 > 0:12:52But Anne thinks she knows best.

0:12:52 > 0:12:55I think the clients are a little bit unsure about the use

0:12:55 > 0:13:00of the fireplace panel but I think it needs a bit of a statement,

0:13:00 > 0:13:05and, um, I'm going to carry on with what I planned.

0:13:05 > 0:13:08- So here, we have the mood board.- OK.

0:13:08 > 0:13:12And I've got a copy of all of the elevations for you.

0:13:12 > 0:13:13- Lovely.- That's to scale.

0:13:13 > 0:13:18Anne gets her builder started on that controversial fireplace panel

0:13:18 > 0:13:19but there's a problem.

0:13:19 > 0:13:22For that panel you've cut, comes up to about here.

0:13:22 > 0:13:26Anne's scale drawings don't measure up.

0:13:26 > 0:13:30- So you need to work out how low you can bring this down...- Yeah.

0:13:30 > 0:13:33..and still not interfere with your poster.

0:13:33 > 0:13:34- I'm going to look at the poster.- OK.

0:13:34 > 0:13:38I'm going to look at the poster and see what it looks like.

0:13:41 > 0:13:43I've only got one poster.

0:13:43 > 0:13:47If there was a problem, it would be really bad.

0:13:50 > 0:13:51Really bad.

0:13:53 > 0:13:55Ooh! Eeh, by gum!

0:13:57 > 0:14:01All three designers have pitched their ideas to their homeowners,

0:14:01 > 0:14:04knowing their every move was being scrutinised for the client

0:14:04 > 0:14:05presentation judging.

0:14:05 > 0:14:09The last time, I was really lucky. I came first in the judging.

0:14:09 > 0:14:13Well, lightning don't strike twice! Obviously, it's a competition.

0:14:13 > 0:14:14I'd love to come first.

0:14:14 > 0:14:17Pretty confident, but you don't know, do you?

0:14:17 > 0:14:19Have to see how it goes.

0:14:19 > 0:14:24Bit anxious. I did try and improve on last time

0:14:24 > 0:14:30and I felt that the board was much more comprehensive.

0:14:30 > 0:14:33With one designer going home at the end of this project,

0:14:33 > 0:14:36how well the judges reach the presentation skills,

0:14:36 > 0:14:39mood boards and drawings at this stage will count.

0:14:41 > 0:14:47Talie, there's no doubt that your homeowner absolutely loved that design.

0:14:47 > 0:14:51But the presentation itself wasn't much different from last time

0:14:51 > 0:14:53and I'm wondering if you need to slightly up your game.

0:14:55 > 0:14:58Craig, we really loved the designs that you had using bare wood

0:14:58 > 0:15:02in that scheme, but overall, the brief asked for something

0:15:02 > 0:15:06elegant and chic and I'm not sure your board really did that.

0:15:06 > 0:15:11Anne, you gave a really comprehensive and beautiful presentation.

0:15:11 > 0:15:15Both of us rather loved this Arts and Crafts influenced design

0:15:15 > 0:15:19that you have but I'm not sure about if your clients do.

0:15:22 > 0:15:25The first prize absolutely has to go to...

0:15:27 > 0:15:28..Anne.

0:15:29 > 0:15:35Brilliant board. One of the best we've seen, exquisitely illustrated, very, very professional. Well done.

0:15:35 > 0:15:39So, you guys, Anne's set the bar and what I'd recommend

0:15:39 > 0:15:42is you both have a look and learn to improve.

0:15:42 > 0:15:45I guess that's positive.

0:15:45 > 0:15:47Um, that's helped my confidence

0:15:47 > 0:15:50but I think what's in my head at the moment is that

0:15:50 > 0:15:55I steam-rollered the clients a bit, so a bit anxious about that.

0:15:55 > 0:15:57Could have been worse. I tried my best.

0:15:57 > 0:16:00The homeowners liked it, so I'm still happy.

0:16:00 > 0:16:03Anne came first and that's fantastic for Anne, cos

0:16:03 > 0:16:06she did come nearer the bottom last time so she's really cranked it up.

0:16:06 > 0:16:10This has proved that the competition is changing all the time

0:16:10 > 0:16:13and I just have to crank it up a little bit more.

0:16:18 > 0:16:20With work well and truly under way,

0:16:20 > 0:16:23our designers are transforming their rooms.

0:16:23 > 0:16:25But 140 years ago,

0:16:25 > 0:16:28the ethos behind Bournville was to transform people's lives.

0:16:28 > 0:16:31The Cadbury brothers, George and Richard,

0:16:31 > 0:16:35built their state-of-the-art factory here in 1879.

0:16:35 > 0:16:38These two had very grand ambitions.

0:16:38 > 0:16:44They didn't just want to build a chocolate factory, they wanted to build an entire utopian community.

0:16:44 > 0:16:47The variety of houses reflected the social mix.

0:16:47 > 0:16:51Grand three-storey semis were built for well-to-do families,

0:16:51 > 0:16:54while almshouses were for retired workers.

0:16:54 > 0:16:57Green space was just as important for residents' wellbeing -

0:16:57 > 0:16:59particularly when down in a smog-filled city,

0:16:59 > 0:17:03life expectancy could be as low as 40 years, so the Cadbury brothers

0:17:03 > 0:17:07ensured that at least 10% of the entire estate was unbuilt on.

0:17:12 > 0:17:17It's the great outdoors that's inspired Anne's Arts and Crafts garden scheme.

0:17:17 > 0:17:21- Take it right from there to there. - Yeah, yeah. So 64.- Yeah.- OK.

0:17:21 > 0:17:27Leaving her builder to figure out the fireplace poster, she gets started on the soft furnishings.

0:17:27 > 0:17:29I'm making the seat cushions.

0:17:29 > 0:17:32I haven't made a window seat before.

0:17:32 > 0:17:34It's a bit awkward cos I'm using a quilt chopped up,

0:17:34 > 0:17:39but I reckon that quilt would actually be much softer

0:17:39 > 0:17:42than making a cushion and stuffing it with wadding.

0:17:46 > 0:17:48Come on, in you go! It's not that hard.

0:17:51 > 0:17:55Anne's creativity impressed the judges in round one.

0:17:55 > 0:17:59I'm going to be making Oriental bunting by stitching that on there.

0:17:59 > 0:18:03I think potentially she's a hugely exciting designer.

0:18:03 > 0:18:06She's really artistic, she's really creative.

0:18:06 > 0:18:09But focusing on the details landed her in trouble.

0:18:09 > 0:18:11It isn't quite a finished project.

0:18:11 > 0:18:14And I would have much rather she'd have spent the time getting some doors on there.

0:18:14 > 0:18:17It would have had a much better visual impact in this room

0:18:17 > 0:18:20and I think she's spent too long doing all the pretty bits.

0:18:20 > 0:18:25And not actually thinking of the overall bigger picture.

0:18:25 > 0:18:28Here you are, Anne, first day, focusing on cushions

0:18:28 > 0:18:31when there's a big project out there to deal with.

0:18:31 > 0:18:33Are you focusing too quickly on the detail?

0:18:33 > 0:18:36To be fair, Dan, they do want a window seat and so,

0:18:36 > 0:18:40these are cushions, but it's also a functioning piece of furniture.

0:18:40 > 0:18:44- M'hm.- And there is a lot to do but, you know, I'm here to push.

0:18:44 > 0:18:47I don't want to let go of the detail.

0:18:47 > 0:18:51I don't want to let go of the...the creativity.

0:18:51 > 0:18:55- We're in day one, and Anne is already...- Making cushions.

0:18:55 > 0:18:58..making cushions, worrying about the details.

0:18:58 > 0:19:01It's a bit like Nero fiddling while Rome is burning.

0:19:01 > 0:19:02Oh, look!

0:19:04 > 0:19:08It looks like it's got plants growing out of it.

0:19:08 > 0:19:09That's...that looks lovely.

0:19:13 > 0:19:17Also getting to grips with upholstery, Craig.

0:19:17 > 0:19:20I've dyed a fabric chair before, never dyed a leather one.

0:19:20 > 0:19:24Er, I'm a bit nervous about doing it, but just got to do it.

0:19:25 > 0:19:26Using a leather colorant

0:19:26 > 0:19:29he bought off the internet for just over £20,

0:19:29 > 0:19:34Craig's dyeing the homeowners' traditional English chesterfield

0:19:34 > 0:19:36for his Parisian boho scheme.

0:19:36 > 0:19:38Going to need a few coats.

0:19:38 > 0:19:40Probably going to take all day.

0:19:40 > 0:19:43But it will look good when I'm done with it.

0:19:43 > 0:19:47Craig was equally confident about his choices in round one -

0:19:47 > 0:19:49despite going way off brief.

0:19:49 > 0:19:53Orange naturally can mean emergency.

0:19:53 > 0:19:54Yes, yes.

0:19:54 > 0:19:56Warning!

0:19:56 > 0:20:02They wanted peaceful, tranquillity - they're getting totally tangoed!

0:20:02 > 0:20:03SHE GASPS

0:20:03 > 0:20:05But his gamble paid off.

0:20:05 > 0:20:07I like it. Yeah, he was right.

0:20:07 > 0:20:09Good on you, Craig.

0:20:09 > 0:20:13Craig, your homeowner clearly knows what she likes

0:20:13 > 0:20:16and she's got lots of references but a lot of that is very conflicting.

0:20:16 > 0:20:18Do you think you're really hitting this brief?

0:20:18 > 0:20:21I do think I've hit it on the head, definitely.

0:20:21 > 0:20:24I think when it comes together, it is going to look bohemian

0:20:24 > 0:20:27and contemporary, which they asked for.

0:20:27 > 0:20:32I think it's becoming quite obvious that Craig doesn't

0:20:32 > 0:20:34really have a very huge repertoire.

0:20:34 > 0:20:35He doesn't have a repertoire.

0:20:35 > 0:20:38What you get with Craig is what you see.

0:20:38 > 0:20:40It's this rough, raw style.

0:20:40 > 0:20:43He might come up with something that's really interesting which

0:20:43 > 0:20:44we have never seen before.

0:20:46 > 0:20:49Something the judges have definitely seen before from Talie is

0:20:49 > 0:20:53painted furniture - and she's at it again.

0:20:53 > 0:20:56Painting is my thing, so it'll be very...

0:20:56 > 0:21:00It would be a great shame if I didn't incorporate that.

0:21:00 > 0:21:04It was Talie's paint COLOUR that came into question in round one.

0:21:04 > 0:21:07I love it! Love it, love it, love it!

0:21:07 > 0:21:09See, I wouldn't have chosen that blue.

0:21:09 > 0:21:12If I was going to do blue, it would be a different colour blue.

0:21:12 > 0:21:16But she managed to balance the colours to create a pleasing final look.

0:21:16 > 0:21:18- Wow!- Oh, wow!

0:21:19 > 0:21:21The colours work really well.

0:21:22 > 0:21:24Talie, I absolutely love your scheme.

0:21:24 > 0:21:25It's got loads of punch.

0:21:25 > 0:21:28If you want indulgent and decadent, nothing does that,

0:21:28 > 0:21:30- quite frankly, than a really deep purple.- Mmm.

0:21:30 > 0:21:32It's just it's quite tried and tested,

0:21:32 > 0:21:34so what's your original spin going to be?

0:21:34 > 0:21:38- I'm upcycling some furniture. And it's not purple!- OK!

0:21:38 > 0:21:44Also, I'm going to be making some 3-D boxes that look like picture frames, and the TV

0:21:44 > 0:21:49is going to be framed, so it's not the black monstrosity in the middle.

0:21:49 > 0:21:52The problem is, when you're doing luxury opulence,

0:21:52 > 0:21:57is that it can go rather tacky and there's far too many shop-bought

0:21:57 > 0:22:00items and, well, a few gimmicks, if I'm honest.

0:22:00 > 0:22:04They may be concerned about the inventiveness of Talie's scheme

0:22:04 > 0:22:08but the judges want to see originality from all three designers.

0:22:08 > 0:22:11So to test just how creative they can be,

0:22:11 > 0:22:16Sophie and Daniel are surprising them with a raw material to upcycle -

0:22:16 > 0:22:18five red bricks.

0:22:18 > 0:22:20We want to really challenge them this time around

0:22:20 > 0:22:24by giving them something that's not immediately beautiful OR useful.

0:22:24 > 0:22:27It's up to them to make them that way.

0:22:27 > 0:22:28Hi, Craig.

0:22:28 > 0:22:30Are you taking the mick?

0:22:30 > 0:22:32You know how it works by now!

0:22:32 > 0:22:34- We want you to be really creative and innovative.- Oh!

0:22:34 > 0:22:40You have 24 hours to turn five bricks into something

0:22:40 > 0:22:43appropriate for the room that we're all going to love and admire.

0:22:43 > 0:22:45Help!

0:22:45 > 0:22:49This challenge is hard, but it's the second round and they'd better be up for it.

0:22:49 > 0:22:51- Did you realise my room's opulent? - Excellent, OK.

0:22:51 > 0:22:54- Feeling confident about that? - Er, yeah!

0:22:54 > 0:22:56Good luck with it!

0:22:56 > 0:23:00The judges will closely watch what the designers decide to do,

0:23:00 > 0:23:01and how creative they are will help them

0:23:01 > 0:23:05decide who to put through to the next round.

0:23:05 > 0:23:08Ugly, industrial, heavy bricks -

0:23:08 > 0:23:10that don't go in an opulent room.

0:23:10 > 0:23:12I'll just keep thinking about it as I'm doing other stuff

0:23:12 > 0:23:15and then, it'll come to me what I'm going to do here.

0:23:20 > 0:23:23It's late on day one and after losing out to Anne in the client briefing,

0:23:23 > 0:23:26Talie's got competition on the brain.

0:23:26 > 0:23:28What about you coming first?

0:23:28 > 0:23:30- I know. I was really surprised.- Well done.

0:23:30 > 0:23:34I think the competition is very stiff in this round.

0:23:34 > 0:23:36And, you know, I can't deny I'm worried.

0:23:36 > 0:23:38I really am.

0:23:38 > 0:23:41I spent all day on one piece of furniture.

0:23:41 > 0:23:44You can see the end result. It's pretty good.

0:23:44 > 0:23:46You know, first attempt at dyeing a chair.

0:23:46 > 0:23:47I'm really happy with it.

0:23:47 > 0:23:50- Are you really chuffed? - Yeah, you look as though you are.

0:23:50 > 0:23:54With her walls painted, cushions complete and mantelpiece built...

0:23:54 > 0:23:58- Can you bring that down, Steve? - I can a bit, yeah.

0:23:58 > 0:23:59..Anne is ending the day on a high.

0:23:59 > 0:24:03Feel in a better place than I did last time.

0:24:03 > 0:24:05- OK?- No problem. Yeah.

0:24:05 > 0:24:08While she and Talie think about lights out,

0:24:08 > 0:24:11Craig is just thinking about lights.

0:24:11 > 0:24:15I'm making a base for the tree branch lamp.

0:24:19 > 0:24:20Beautiful, see?

0:24:20 > 0:24:21Done.

0:24:30 > 0:24:34Yesterday was a day of upcycling and upholstering.

0:24:34 > 0:24:37There's still so much work to do before our living rooms

0:24:37 > 0:24:39become livable-in again.

0:24:39 > 0:24:43With one designer leaving at the end of the project, the pressure is on.

0:24:43 > 0:24:48Yesterday was literally about the chair, so, today,

0:24:48 > 0:24:53I've got quite a bit of painting and some upholstery to do.

0:24:53 > 0:24:55I'm trying to take it in my stride.

0:24:55 > 0:24:58It might not be like that later on.

0:24:58 > 0:25:00I'm speaking in a very calm voice.

0:25:00 > 0:25:02I'm not really very calm.

0:25:02 > 0:25:05I'm probably on a little bit of a negative today, actually,

0:25:05 > 0:25:08because speaking to the other contestants, they just seemed

0:25:08 > 0:25:13so together and their stuff what they're doing is amazing,

0:25:13 > 0:25:16so I'm going to get working hard,

0:25:16 > 0:25:20I'm going to put opulence in that room and give the homeowner exactly what she wants.

0:25:20 > 0:25:23Talie's room is a long way off opulent at the moment,

0:25:23 > 0:25:28though, so while her decorator paints a second coat of purple,

0:25:28 > 0:25:31she's adding glamour to her painted console table.

0:25:31 > 0:25:34This is just a little subtle bit of gold,

0:25:34 > 0:25:36um, just to lift out the colour.

0:25:36 > 0:25:38You're going to have so much bling in there

0:25:38 > 0:25:42and if you go over the top on the bling, it looks really tacky.

0:25:42 > 0:25:45With her console table given just the right amount of class,

0:25:45 > 0:25:46Talie's back in the room.

0:25:48 > 0:25:52Oh, it's exactly what I wanted!

0:25:52 > 0:25:54Well done, Mr Painter-decorator.

0:25:54 > 0:25:56Not a problem, my love.

0:25:56 > 0:26:00Oh, when that cream carpet goes in and there's champagne on the walls,

0:26:00 > 0:26:02it's going to look showbiz!

0:26:04 > 0:26:08Talie might be excited but that new cream carpet cost nearly

0:26:08 > 0:26:11a third of her budget, which could be an unnecessary expense.

0:26:11 > 0:26:15I was quite happy to keep the carpet, to be truthful with you.

0:26:15 > 0:26:19And it's going to take more than a deep-pile shag to impress

0:26:19 > 0:26:21the judges.

0:26:21 > 0:26:24So do tell me, what do you see as being creative in this room?

0:26:24 > 0:26:28I think the main creative pieces are the furniture.

0:26:28 > 0:26:30I am sort of tarting them up.

0:26:30 > 0:26:32So when you say you're tarting them up, you're painting them?

0:26:32 > 0:26:34It's not just painting them.

0:26:34 > 0:26:36They're having a little bit of gold gilt on them

0:26:36 > 0:26:38and they're having some contrasting.

0:26:38 > 0:26:40I don't want to give too much away.

0:26:40 > 0:26:45- Cos it's kind of what you do, isn't it, breathe life into old bits of furniture?- Yeah.

0:26:45 > 0:26:48But we want to see something new. That's what I'm going to say to you.

0:26:48 > 0:26:53I want to see new, original ideas and I'm sorry, but painting up furniture doesn't cut it.

0:26:53 > 0:26:54I see it all the time.

0:26:54 > 0:26:57What is going to be her original twist on that?

0:26:57 > 0:26:59They want creative, so they're going to get it

0:26:59 > 0:27:01slapped in their face!

0:27:01 > 0:27:04One creative comeback - a purple stripe.

0:27:04 > 0:27:06I'm going to actually... going to go home

0:27:06 > 0:27:09and I'm going to Google what creativity means.

0:27:09 > 0:27:13Because, you know, there's nothing more I can possibly do,

0:27:13 > 0:27:15than what I'm doing now.

0:27:20 > 0:27:22Anne knows there's lots more she can do.

0:27:22 > 0:27:27Her mantelpiece is getting a coat of paint and the shelves and pelmet are going up.

0:27:27 > 0:27:30- That's great, Steve. - Yeah?- Great.- Is it?

0:27:30 > 0:27:33But there's no let-up for any of the designers.

0:27:33 > 0:27:37Today, they'll all face a visit from their homeowners

0:27:37 > 0:27:41around the halfway mark, and the prospect is making Anne nervous.

0:27:41 > 0:27:44I am a bit anxious about the whole morning, because I'm worried

0:27:44 > 0:27:49that the fireplace might be a bit overelaborate for them,

0:27:49 > 0:27:51so I'm a wee bit worried about that.

0:27:51 > 0:27:53The panel that you showed us and the mood board.

0:27:53 > 0:27:57- Yeah, yes. Yes. - That was this, in that whole area?

0:27:57 > 0:28:02Yes. Here, there'll be the RHS botanical print of the single leaves

0:28:02 > 0:28:06and I thought that's quite nice for Lily to identify them.

0:28:06 > 0:28:08And then, the wallpaper's about that wide.

0:28:11 > 0:28:14I love the idea of the narrative -

0:28:14 > 0:28:15that Lily's involved in the room.

0:28:15 > 0:28:18I think you've given it a bit of character as well.

0:28:18 > 0:28:22- Thank you, good. Phew! I was really worried.- Good.

0:28:22 > 0:28:26I feel like there's been a massive weight lifted off my shoulders.

0:28:26 > 0:28:31It's a big thing for me to know that they're happy with the room.

0:28:31 > 0:28:34It may be a little early to relax, though.

0:28:34 > 0:28:37I was really pleasantly surprised when I went into the room.

0:28:37 > 0:28:38It is very Arts and Craftsy.

0:28:38 > 0:28:42There aren't that many contemporary or modern features.

0:28:42 > 0:28:45I think she really hasn't done the contemporary bit yet.

0:28:45 > 0:28:47I'm delighted, yeah. I think it's great.

0:28:47 > 0:28:52While they're hoping for contemporary, Anne's next detail may be just too cutting-edge.

0:28:52 > 0:28:54Fake grass!

0:28:54 > 0:28:57This is for a play garden for Lily.

0:28:57 > 0:29:03That's under the garden seat, so I am literally bringing the garden inside the room.

0:29:03 > 0:29:05There we are. Done.

0:29:05 > 0:29:06But of course, it's not done

0:29:06 > 0:29:10until Anne adds her trademark artistic details.

0:29:10 > 0:29:14I'm painting this so that Lily can sit here and play

0:29:14 > 0:29:18with her little creatures in the garden.

0:29:18 > 0:29:21I can tell you're in your element this time, aren't you?

0:29:21 > 0:29:22You're in your element.

0:29:22 > 0:29:23What makes you say that?

0:29:23 > 0:29:27- Um...- I can see in your eyes, you seem very kind of excited by it.

0:29:27 > 0:29:29- Um, I am excited. - Do you feel like you've learnt?

0:29:29 > 0:29:32Um, oh, massively. Vertical ascent!

0:29:32 > 0:29:35Learning curve. Straight up.

0:29:36 > 0:29:39There's more to learn for all three designers, as the judges have

0:29:39 > 0:29:43given them 24 hours to transform five bricks into a stylish

0:29:43 > 0:29:45and functional product.

0:29:45 > 0:29:48At the second-round stage, they should be able to rise to the

0:29:48 > 0:29:50challenge and show us they can work with a raw material

0:29:50 > 0:29:54and make anything out of nothing, even a pile of old bricks.

0:29:54 > 0:29:57Talie's planning to disguise her bricks as books.

0:29:57 > 0:30:00This is either going to be one really heavy bookend,

0:30:00 > 0:30:02or it's going to be a doorstop.

0:30:04 > 0:30:05I'm not liking it, really,

0:30:05 > 0:30:09because it just looks like a brick stuck in a piece of paper

0:30:09 > 0:30:12and that's not what I want.

0:30:12 > 0:30:16I think this is a nice idea in principle.

0:30:16 > 0:30:19I mean, using a brick as a doorstop definitely works

0:30:19 > 0:30:21and to make it into a book cover's kind of playful.

0:30:21 > 0:30:24I don't think it's really glamorous or opulent.

0:30:24 > 0:30:26I'm not overimpressed with what I've done.

0:30:26 > 0:30:30I think it could be...goodbye, Talie.

0:30:30 > 0:30:32Craig's also flummoxed.

0:30:32 > 0:30:35There's not much you can do with five bricks, to be honest.

0:30:35 > 0:30:39So the idea is to sort of somehow stick them together,

0:30:39 > 0:30:41paint them gold,

0:30:41 > 0:30:44going to put a top on, so it's going to be like a little side table.

0:30:44 > 0:30:47I'm just lost for words with Craig. This is really ugly.

0:30:47 > 0:30:51And it's really useless. What can you put on that?

0:30:51 > 0:30:55I think I've done pretty well to turn them into something useful.

0:30:55 > 0:30:56Done!

0:30:56 > 0:31:01- True to form, illustrator Anne starts with a doodle.- What is it?

0:31:01 > 0:31:02What can it be?

0:31:03 > 0:31:06And inspiration strikes.

0:31:06 > 0:31:09What I'm thinking of is making a little step

0:31:09 > 0:31:12- so that you can put things onto the shelf easier.- OK.

0:31:12 > 0:31:17- What I want to do is encase it with MDF all the way round.- OK. Lovely.

0:31:17 > 0:31:19She's put some real thought into that

0:31:19 > 0:31:22and come up with something that fits her scheme.

0:31:22 > 0:31:25Yes, it's a unique idea, and I think there's been some design process.

0:31:25 > 0:31:29So a mixed review from the judges, but Sophie and Daniel will

0:31:29 > 0:31:34make their judgements when the items are in their finished schemes.

0:31:37 > 0:31:40Back in Craig's Parisian boho room,

0:31:40 > 0:31:43the traditional toile wallpaper is still being pasted.

0:31:43 > 0:31:45- Well, it's gone on all right, hasn't it?- Yeah.

0:31:45 > 0:31:48But until it's finished, he can't paint.

0:31:48 > 0:31:50So instead he's getting creative.

0:31:50 > 0:31:52These are going to become the sticks.

0:31:52 > 0:31:55I'm going to get two candlesticks out of one spindle,

0:31:55 > 0:31:58and they're going to be painted sort of like gold strips round them,

0:31:58 > 0:32:00green strips and all sorts.

0:32:00 > 0:32:04I'd say this is definitely more a sort of bohemian look.

0:32:08 > 0:32:10So this is the base of the candlestick.

0:32:10 > 0:32:12I'm just painting it gold.

0:32:14 > 0:32:16Raining!

0:32:16 > 0:32:19It's raining! I just can't get anything done

0:32:19 > 0:32:22because it's making it very damp, the paint's not drying.

0:32:22 > 0:32:26It's leaking through this so it's dropping onto everything.

0:32:28 > 0:32:29Stop raining!

0:32:30 > 0:32:34Further dampening Craig's spirit is his bright green paint,

0:32:34 > 0:32:36which needs, well, dampening down -

0:32:36 > 0:32:39part of the client's misgivings earlier on.

0:32:39 > 0:32:41- It will dry a lot lighter. - Yeah.

0:32:41 > 0:32:44But it is quite neon.

0:32:44 > 0:32:47Think I'm going to dull it down quite a bit.

0:32:50 > 0:32:51Hmm.

0:32:54 > 0:32:56It can either look dazzling or it can look a disaster.

0:32:56 > 0:32:58I was going to say, dazzling or bonkers.

0:32:58 > 0:33:00It's going to be one of those two.

0:33:02 > 0:33:03Keeping tabs on the competition,

0:33:03 > 0:33:06Talie's also come to check out Craig's colour scheme.

0:33:06 > 0:33:08Knock, knock! Hello!

0:33:08 > 0:33:10All right, how you doing?

0:33:10 > 0:33:11All right. Wow!

0:33:11 > 0:33:14Green! Mint green. Yeah, it's gorge.

0:33:14 > 0:33:16To be honest, I'm going to sort of dull it down a bit

0:33:16 > 0:33:19but I'm just trying to cover this wallpaper.

0:33:19 > 0:33:20Yeah, that's a hard one, isn't it?

0:33:20 > 0:33:23This paper's been pretty... pretty violent.

0:33:25 > 0:33:28The colour scheme's not my personal taste.

0:33:28 > 0:33:30It's a brave colour to go with.

0:33:30 > 0:33:33The visit may have upped Talie's confidence,

0:33:33 > 0:33:35but it's unsettled Craig's.

0:33:35 > 0:33:40When Talie came to visit, I didn't sort of feel prepared for it.

0:33:40 > 0:33:44It comes across that bit behind and I'm scared that's sort of going

0:33:44 > 0:33:46to give her a boost.

0:33:46 > 0:33:49I'd like to see what she's doing, but I ain't got time for that.

0:33:51 > 0:33:54Time is something in short supply for our designers, but not

0:33:54 > 0:33:58for the young builder of Bournville, who had time very much on his side.

0:33:58 > 0:34:03Estate architect William Alexander Harvey was appointed in 1895,

0:34:03 > 0:34:04aged just 20.

0:34:04 > 0:34:09Others followed, but his designs dominate the whole estate.

0:34:09 > 0:34:12While firmly anchored in the Arts and Crafts movement,

0:34:12 > 0:34:16Harvey drew on diverse influences, from Tudor timber framing,

0:34:16 > 0:34:21floral motifs of Art Nouveau and eves curving like eyebrows,

0:34:21 > 0:34:24bringing to mind thatched cottages.

0:34:24 > 0:34:28Sometimes, though, his designs verged on the eccentric.

0:34:28 > 0:34:29In this one building, for instance,

0:34:29 > 0:34:33he combines Arts and Crafts with Dutch-style stepped gables,

0:34:33 > 0:34:3617th-century dormer windows with a Chinese twist

0:34:36 > 0:34:38and Venetian windows as well.

0:34:38 > 0:34:40He definitely had a taste for the unusual.

0:34:40 > 0:34:43He didn't want his individual buildings to be uniform,

0:34:43 > 0:34:47but he did want the whole estate to have harmony, and he pulled it off.

0:34:51 > 0:34:55Anne's hoping to pull off a harmonious Arts and Crafts scheme

0:34:55 > 0:34:58with traditional and up-to-date elements to fulfil her brief.

0:34:58 > 0:35:00So what's the contemporary? Show me the contemporary.

0:35:00 > 0:35:02The contemporary isn't in here yet.

0:35:02 > 0:35:06It's not really that contemporary, but it's rather nice G Plan.

0:35:06 > 0:35:08So, that contemporary?

0:35:08 > 0:35:12You've actually reached your way all the way up to 1965.

0:35:12 > 0:35:13THEY LAUGH

0:35:13 > 0:35:14That's still a period piece.

0:35:14 > 0:35:18Yes, well, if contemporary's now, I'M contemporary,

0:35:18 > 0:35:21so I am making the cushions.

0:35:21 > 0:35:22They are contemporary.

0:35:24 > 0:35:27She's gone entirely for the Arts and Crafts look.

0:35:27 > 0:35:28Problem is, though,

0:35:28 > 0:35:33the homeowner is looking for a twist of modernity, which isn't there.

0:35:33 > 0:35:37Craig's homeowners, however, wanted a paler shade of green.

0:35:37 > 0:35:40With a visit imminent, he'll find out if he's got it right.

0:35:40 > 0:35:44We've just tried to sort of dull it down quite a bit

0:35:44 > 0:35:46because I want you to be happy with it.

0:35:46 > 0:35:50You're the ones who are going to spend your time in here,

0:35:50 > 0:35:52eating your dinners and stuff, so...

0:35:52 > 0:35:55It does look good in that lighter shade.

0:35:55 > 0:35:56Brilliant. I'm glad you like it.

0:35:56 > 0:35:57The paint may be approved,

0:35:57 > 0:36:01but Craig's boho scheme is still under scrutiny.

0:36:01 > 0:36:03- Still looks quite traditional.- Yeah.

0:36:03 > 0:36:07That's why I need to get everything in.

0:36:07 > 0:36:09People are going to be surprised how

0:36:09 > 0:36:14bohemian it's going to sort of turn into, really.

0:36:14 > 0:36:17So this brief had a lot of competing things to pull together

0:36:17 > 0:36:19in one pretty small room.

0:36:19 > 0:36:21There was a lot of different designs in the brief

0:36:21 > 0:36:25that the homeowner liked. Some of them did sort of clash.

0:36:25 > 0:36:29It was very hard picking out what to sort of pick together.

0:36:29 > 0:36:31But I feel like I've sort of rose to the challenge.

0:36:31 > 0:36:34What have you learned from the first round?

0:36:34 > 0:36:35Just to enjoy it.

0:36:35 > 0:36:39That's it, really, because I felt like I did a good job, so...

0:36:39 > 0:36:41TOM LAUGHS

0:36:41 > 0:36:42Bit overconfident!

0:36:42 > 0:36:45- No, no, nothing wrong with a bit of confidence.- Well, that's it.

0:36:45 > 0:36:48Anne is also brimming with confidence as she puts

0:36:48 > 0:36:52the finishing touches to her shelves - contemporary copper trim.

0:36:52 > 0:36:54I've really pushed the design.

0:36:56 > 0:37:00I think I've been quite brave about that.

0:37:00 > 0:37:03- Hi, Anne.- Hello, Craig. - I love the copper.

0:37:03 > 0:37:07Do you like the little bit of grass on the bottom, down here?

0:37:07 > 0:37:09There's a little play area.

0:37:09 > 0:37:12- Oh, wow!- It's bringing the outside inside.- Yeah. Definitely.

0:37:12 > 0:37:16- Bringing the garden inside. - No, that's very creative.

0:37:16 > 0:37:17SHE LAUGHS

0:37:17 > 0:37:20I think I've been a bit more creative.

0:37:20 > 0:37:24I sort of didn't get the grass under the...thing.

0:37:24 > 0:37:26Is that a kid's play area?

0:37:26 > 0:37:28How's a kid going to fit in there?

0:37:31 > 0:37:35It's a TV that Talie's having problems fitting into her opulent scheme.

0:37:35 > 0:37:38All right, Talie? This is ever so slightly too narrow.

0:37:38 > 0:37:41I don't really want to start messing around with the frame.

0:37:41 > 0:37:44- It's such a minute bit. It wouldn't bother me.- No.

0:37:44 > 0:37:48And I'm a bit pedantic, so, yeah, I think it's cool.

0:37:48 > 0:37:51She won't need to second-guess much longer,

0:37:51 > 0:37:53as her homeowner is due any minute.

0:37:53 > 0:37:55After loving the design on paper,

0:37:55 > 0:37:58Talie's hoping Dawn will be as dazzled with the real thing.

0:37:58 > 0:38:01Wow!

0:38:01 > 0:38:02SHE GASPS

0:38:02 > 0:38:07- Love it, love it, love it!- I call it champagne.- I'm good with champagne!

0:38:07 > 0:38:09- Yeah! - THEY LAUGH

0:38:09 > 0:38:12You have to look at it. You can't drink it, though, love!

0:38:14 > 0:38:17On the glamour level, I think

0:38:17 > 0:38:21Talie's working her way definitely up to ten.

0:38:21 > 0:38:22Oh!

0:38:22 > 0:38:24A bit torn, that one.

0:38:24 > 0:38:26When you see the homeowner's reaction like that,

0:38:26 > 0:38:29it's just...it's the best feeling, it really is.

0:38:29 > 0:38:33And then you realise why you put yourself through this.

0:38:33 > 0:38:34And what's it for?

0:38:34 > 0:38:37And, at the end of the day, it's to bring a bit of sunshine to someone.

0:38:37 > 0:38:41Exactly where you've got it now. Perfect. Yeah.

0:38:45 > 0:38:48Bringing happiness to their 19th-century residents

0:38:48 > 0:38:51was equally important to the architects of Bournville.

0:38:51 > 0:38:55And just as much attention was paid to the inside of the cottages

0:38:55 > 0:38:56as the exteriors.

0:38:56 > 0:38:59There's this beautiful fireplace of typical

0:38:59 > 0:39:01Arts and Crafts glazed tiles.

0:39:01 > 0:39:05In the Arts and Crafts home, the hearth was a symbolic heart,

0:39:05 > 0:39:07so much detail was lavished on it.

0:39:07 > 0:39:09Over here you've got these beautiful bay windows.

0:39:09 > 0:39:12This would've flooded light into the interior.

0:39:12 > 0:39:16All this was a far, far cry from the dense,

0:39:16 > 0:39:17slum-ridden heart of the city.

0:39:19 > 0:39:22Downstairs, huge sculleries were placed next to the garden.

0:39:22 > 0:39:24Married women could no longer work in a factory.

0:39:24 > 0:39:26They were expected to look after the house.

0:39:26 > 0:39:31And men were encouraged to keep fit, to make food for the family

0:39:31 > 0:39:33and also to stay away from the fleshpots of Birmingham

0:39:33 > 0:39:35by tending their garden.

0:39:35 > 0:39:38The estate provided orchards in every back garden.

0:39:38 > 0:39:40There is an original apple tree at the bottom of this one.

0:39:47 > 0:39:49It's near the end of day two,

0:39:49 > 0:39:53and the designers are a long way from finishing their schemes.

0:39:53 > 0:39:54How much are you over?

0:39:54 > 0:39:59- Well, I'm about two or three inches over, so...- Inches?- Yes.

0:40:01 > 0:40:04These walls have been a nightmare to do. I just want to get...

0:40:04 > 0:40:07It's driving me up the wall.

0:40:07 > 0:40:10I'm absolutely shattered.

0:40:10 > 0:40:14All three designers have a battle on their hands to avoid elimination.

0:40:14 > 0:40:18The list is pretty endless. Just got to get my butt into order.

0:40:18 > 0:40:21I don't want to go home. I've worked damned hard.

0:40:21 > 0:40:24Yeah, that's it, happy with that.

0:40:24 > 0:40:25What a tense day.

0:40:36 > 0:40:38It's the final morning of the competition

0:40:38 > 0:40:42and, in a few hours, our three designers will become two.

0:40:42 > 0:40:44So they don't have long to impress the judges

0:40:44 > 0:40:48and stress levels are rising.

0:40:48 > 0:40:50I would like to be slightly more ahead.

0:40:50 > 0:40:51I've got to upholster a stool,

0:40:51 > 0:40:55I've got to finish waxing all my furniture. Oh, it's just endless.

0:40:55 > 0:41:01I've got the carpet turning up. Um, yeah, it's full-on, it's full-on.

0:41:01 > 0:41:03It is going to be a rush.

0:41:03 > 0:41:07I really hope that this paint is only going to need one more coat.

0:41:07 > 0:41:09That's the only worry I've got.

0:41:11 > 0:41:12At the end of today

0:41:12 > 0:41:16Sophie and Daniel will decide which designer will leave the competition.

0:41:16 > 0:41:19Quite a lot at stake, if you want to progress.

0:41:19 > 0:41:21At this second-round stage

0:41:21 > 0:41:24they're going to be even more critical than ever.

0:41:24 > 0:41:29# It's the final countdown! # Ha-ha!

0:41:29 > 0:41:32It's Groundhog Day in Craig's Parisian boho room,

0:41:32 > 0:41:36as his third coat of green paint goes on the walls.

0:41:36 > 0:41:40I've never spent so much time painting such a little area.

0:41:40 > 0:41:43I've got the heaters on, trying to get it dry as quickly as I can,

0:41:43 > 0:41:45then I'm going to run over it again.

0:41:45 > 0:41:49Craig has also still got key pieces of furniture to finish.

0:41:49 > 0:41:50Not happy.

0:41:51 > 0:41:53I'm not happy at all.

0:41:54 > 0:41:58I've cut right through my music notes.

0:41:58 > 0:42:01I'm going to have to try and...patch it up slightly.

0:42:02 > 0:42:04How's Craig getting along in his room?

0:42:04 > 0:42:07We're seeing him being extremely industrious.

0:42:07 > 0:42:11There are lots of things he's making which are not inside the room right now.

0:42:11 > 0:42:14But the question is, is that furniture going to look right

0:42:14 > 0:42:17in this very chic, boho room that he's designing?

0:42:17 > 0:42:19I like it!

0:42:19 > 0:42:23Anne's garden room is coming alive with all the structural

0:42:23 > 0:42:27and decorative work done, but nothing is escaping her attention.

0:42:27 > 0:42:29Just this little funny thing.

0:42:29 > 0:42:32Decorating this is getting on my nerves.

0:42:33 > 0:42:36Now, Anne was all about the detail last time.

0:42:36 > 0:42:38- How about this time round? - Yeah, still all about the detail.

0:42:38 > 0:42:41There are cushions and shelves and details,

0:42:41 > 0:42:45and quirky little funny bits happening under the windowsills,

0:42:45 > 0:42:48so, yeah, it's still very much detail-based.

0:42:50 > 0:42:52SHE HUFFS

0:42:52 > 0:42:54I'm struggling today.

0:42:54 > 0:42:56In Talie's glamorous room,

0:42:56 > 0:43:00she's eking out the last of her purple paint.

0:43:00 > 0:43:04I'm really down to the last drops of this.

0:43:04 > 0:43:06And I've got to do some shelves.

0:43:06 > 0:43:08You wanted to see some more creativity from Talie.

0:43:08 > 0:43:10Are we seeing it?

0:43:10 > 0:43:13Not yet, if I'm honest. She's going for a very bold colour scheme.

0:43:13 > 0:43:15There's a gold frame around the TV.

0:43:15 > 0:43:18Now, that's the first time I've ever seen that.

0:43:18 > 0:43:20But she says she's painting furniture,

0:43:20 > 0:43:24that's being creative, but, honestly, we see that a lot.

0:43:24 > 0:43:29Our designers have had three days and £1,000 to transform a room each.

0:43:29 > 0:43:32They've been judged on their presentation skills and had

0:43:32 > 0:43:37to come up with an innovative way of making five bricks fit their scheme.

0:43:37 > 0:43:40Now they're approaching the end of their projects.

0:43:40 > 0:43:42For Talie, time is almost up.

0:43:42 > 0:43:45- I need to get these up in a minute. - OK.

0:43:45 > 0:43:47But with the judges' concerns about her creativity...

0:43:47 > 0:43:50The carpet's lovely. It's perfect. Exactly what I wanted.

0:43:50 > 0:43:52..her finishing touches...

0:43:52 > 0:43:55I absolutely loathe sewing.

0:43:55 > 0:43:58..must have enough sparkle to win them over.

0:43:59 > 0:44:00SHE HUFFS

0:44:00 > 0:44:03Finished. I'm out of here.

0:44:07 > 0:44:09Oh!

0:44:09 > 0:44:14I don't know what to say. I'm really, really, really shattered.

0:44:14 > 0:44:18Talie's brief was to create a glamorous and decadent room.

0:44:18 > 0:44:25Three days ago it was 50 shades of beige, with a lacklustre layout.

0:44:25 > 0:44:30Now Talie's transformed it, with a gold and purple colour scheme

0:44:30 > 0:44:32and olive accents across the furniture.

0:44:33 > 0:44:35She's replaced the old carpet,

0:44:35 > 0:44:38added glitz with gilt frames

0:44:38 > 0:44:40and a drop chandelier.

0:44:40 > 0:44:42Finally, she's attempted creativity

0:44:42 > 0:44:46with details like her unusual TV surround.

0:44:46 > 0:44:50That room is a creative masterpiece. It really is!

0:44:50 > 0:44:55There's loads of little elements in there that have been creative.

0:44:57 > 0:45:01I think the colour, this really rich, dark, auberginey purple

0:45:01 > 0:45:04and the gold is a winning combination. And it does work.

0:45:04 > 0:45:10The biggest challenge that Talie had was creating luxury on a shoestring.

0:45:10 > 0:45:14This doesn't quite make the mark. It's a little empty.

0:45:14 > 0:45:17I'm looking, thinking, "Where has she spent the money?"

0:45:17 > 0:45:19She's actually spent it on a beige carpet

0:45:19 > 0:45:22and I can't work out why because the carpet was perfectly fine.

0:45:22 > 0:45:26Maybe it would have been better to invest in one really gorgeous thing.

0:45:26 > 0:45:29A big chandelier, a really big gilt mirror.

0:45:29 > 0:45:33But we've got velvets, we've got silks, we've got a bit of faux fur.

0:45:33 > 0:45:37And layering out the texture that's kind of essential to this luxurious look.

0:45:37 > 0:45:40Now, layout I find interesting because, if you remember,

0:45:40 > 0:45:41- it was all a bit...- Sofa here.

0:45:41 > 0:45:43..trying to get round the door and the sofa.

0:45:43 > 0:45:46And actually, this room does flow a lot better.

0:45:46 > 0:45:47And also it's kind of sociable

0:45:47 > 0:45:50because you can sit on opposite sides and have a nice chat.

0:45:52 > 0:45:55As well as their overall schemes, Sophie and Daniel will judge

0:45:55 > 0:45:58how well their brick designs fit the room.

0:45:58 > 0:46:00This has been designed as a doorstop.

0:46:00 > 0:46:02Three bricks would stop any door, quite frankly.

0:46:02 > 0:46:04But, yes, I thought that would happen.

0:46:04 > 0:46:06They're glued together,

0:46:06 > 0:46:10so they're never going to actually work as a complete set.

0:46:10 > 0:46:14So, a nice idea, but it doesn't actually work.

0:46:14 > 0:46:17What I do enjoy are the framed boxes.

0:46:17 > 0:46:21- And actually, I sort of don't mind that TV.- I know, neither do I!

0:46:21 > 0:46:23I can't believe it! Are we allowed to like it?

0:46:23 > 0:46:25I think, in the context of the other frames,

0:46:25 > 0:46:28if it was just on its own, it would look a bit naff,

0:46:28 > 0:46:31but because she's got the gold frames on either alcove as well,

0:46:31 > 0:46:34there's a connection, they work. But I'm not wowed by it.

0:46:34 > 0:46:39I'm not seeing anything here that's wildly creative or new or exciting.

0:46:39 > 0:46:43Judging is always an anxious time.

0:46:44 > 0:46:46Not as anxious as the homeowner seeing it,

0:46:46 > 0:46:49because at the end of the day she's living in it.

0:46:49 > 0:46:52How happy the homeowners are with the finished schemes

0:46:52 > 0:46:55will inform the judges' final decision.

0:46:55 > 0:46:58Oh, it's amazing, I'm going to cry.

0:46:58 > 0:47:00Oh, I love it.

0:47:00 > 0:47:03Oh, I absolutely love it.

0:47:07 > 0:47:09- I'm sorry.- It's all right!

0:47:09 > 0:47:11If you can't have a weep in your living room...

0:47:11 > 0:47:15- Oh, thank you so much.- So you like what she's done?- It's amazing.

0:47:15 > 0:47:16It's just what I wanted.

0:47:18 > 0:47:19Ohh!

0:47:19 > 0:47:22With his deadline fast approaching,

0:47:22 > 0:47:26Craig needs to bring together a huge amount of eclectic furniture.

0:47:27 > 0:47:31The most awkward bloody lamp you've ever seen in your life.

0:47:31 > 0:47:34He's relying on the fixtures and fittings...

0:47:35 > 0:47:39..to add the "je ne sais quoi" to his bold, Parisian boho scheme.

0:47:40 > 0:47:43Yeah, I think we're done. All done.

0:47:47 > 0:47:51All my little artistic creations that I've done

0:47:51 > 0:47:55have come together pretty well. So, yeah, really happy.

0:47:56 > 0:48:00Craig's brief was to create a multifunctional reception room,

0:48:00 > 0:48:04combining chic Parisian boho with bold, clashing colours.

0:48:04 > 0:48:08Three days ago, it was dark and lacking much va-va-voom!

0:48:12 > 0:48:15Now, it's light and bright.

0:48:15 > 0:48:19In his bid for boho, Craig has gone eclectic,

0:48:19 > 0:48:22the green walls and toile acting as a backdrop for his mix of items.

0:48:24 > 0:48:25A dyed leather chair.

0:48:25 > 0:48:28A natural wood light installation.

0:48:28 > 0:48:30Bespoke candlestick holders.

0:48:30 > 0:48:33And adapted storage units.

0:48:33 > 0:48:37I think I have hit the brief on the head really.

0:48:37 > 0:48:39But that's up to the judges.

0:48:42 > 0:48:44SHE LAUGHS

0:48:44 > 0:48:46I'm shocked.

0:48:46 > 0:48:50- Are you?- Yes. What has happened?

0:48:50 > 0:48:52What has happened in here?

0:48:52 > 0:48:56- I mean, ohh! - Do you not like the mirror?

0:48:56 > 0:48:58It's just nothing is going.

0:48:58 > 0:49:02And what are these chairs doing next to this mirror?

0:49:02 > 0:49:04What is this colour doing next to that wallpaper?

0:49:04 > 0:49:08- The curtain, what is that? What is that?- What?

0:49:08 > 0:49:12That lamp on that cabinet with that branch?

0:49:12 > 0:49:14But it's meant to be an eclectic mix.

0:49:14 > 0:49:17I think I'm getting it a little bit more than you are.

0:49:17 > 0:49:20The idea of the branch on the lights is the connection with

0:49:20 > 0:49:22the outside and in, I can get that.

0:49:22 > 0:49:24But he's gone for the stronger greens

0:49:24 > 0:49:27because it's to do with that Paris boho feel.

0:49:27 > 0:49:30He has been given a really tough brief,

0:49:30 > 0:49:32because this is all about being eclectic.

0:49:32 > 0:49:34And that sounds simple, but it's not.

0:49:34 > 0:49:38To try and pull all those elements together can be a nightmare.

0:49:38 > 0:49:42While the scheme as a whole isn't working for me,

0:49:42 > 0:49:44there are some really nice pieces.

0:49:44 > 0:49:47I love what he's done with his candlesticks, his own design.

0:49:47 > 0:49:48That I like.

0:49:48 > 0:49:52Can Craig further redeem himself with his upcycled bricks?

0:49:52 > 0:49:55That is a crime against design.

0:49:55 > 0:49:58Well, it has hints of desperation about it.

0:49:58 > 0:50:00Why would you need that in your home?

0:50:00 > 0:50:02It's useless and it's not beautiful.

0:50:04 > 0:50:07The room looks fantastic. I think the homeowner is going to love it.

0:50:10 > 0:50:12Welcome.

0:50:12 > 0:50:16- Wow.- To your new home.- Oh, my goodness. Gosh.- It's different.

0:50:16 > 0:50:20Hugely different. It's lovely.

0:50:20 > 0:50:22- It is very lovely.- It is. - That's good,

0:50:22 > 0:50:25that's a good first impression. I'm getting a good first impression.

0:50:25 > 0:50:28I thought it was going to look quite traditional.

0:50:28 > 0:50:32No, it's quite funky. I love that lamp. That's very cool.

0:50:32 > 0:50:35Oh, look at the cupboard. This is our bookshelves.

0:50:35 > 0:50:39- I can't believe the amount of things he's packed in here.- I love it.

0:50:41 > 0:50:44With the deadline looming, Anne gets busy dressing the room

0:50:44 > 0:50:48with her homeowner's art and all her creative details.

0:50:48 > 0:50:51Including a whole heap of soft furnishings.

0:50:51 > 0:50:54Anything little, anything little.

0:50:54 > 0:50:56Anything little.

0:50:56 > 0:51:00I don't think there's anything else to twiddle on with, to be honest.

0:51:04 > 0:51:05I'm very proud of it.

0:51:05 > 0:51:07I think the thing I'm most proud about

0:51:07 > 0:51:10is how the scheme works together.

0:51:10 > 0:51:13Anne's brief was for a grown-up reception room,

0:51:13 > 0:51:15mixing the contemporary and period.

0:51:17 > 0:51:20Three days ago, it was bland and lacked character.

0:51:22 > 0:51:25Now, it's a sophisticated, welcoming room,

0:51:25 > 0:51:28with a period Arts and Crafts-style fireplace.

0:51:29 > 0:51:31Anne's given the window a cushioned seat,

0:51:31 > 0:51:34curtains and even a play area for daughter Lily.

0:51:36 > 0:51:39Her nod to modernity - copper-trimmed shelving,

0:51:39 > 0:51:43a 1960s coffee table and a contemporary colour scheme.

0:51:43 > 0:51:47If the judges turned around and said the room isn't good enough,

0:51:47 > 0:51:49I wouldn't think they'd been in that room.

0:51:51 > 0:51:53I think it is good enough.

0:51:57 > 0:52:01That is a winning window treatment as far as I'm concerned.

0:52:01 > 0:52:02That makes me very happy.

0:52:02 > 0:52:05Anne had this idea about creating this little cubbyhole

0:52:05 > 0:52:08for their daughter to play in and I thought it all sounded

0:52:08 > 0:52:11a bit bonkers, but now I see it, actually it's quite sweet.

0:52:11 > 0:52:14I love it, I think it's really cute.

0:52:14 > 0:52:17How do Anne's brick steps fit her scheme?

0:52:17 > 0:52:22The idea is, if you're a bit short like me, you've got a little step.

0:52:22 > 0:52:24- Oh, look, you can reach Richard's books.- Books.

0:52:24 > 0:52:27- I've already got a problem though.- What's that?

0:52:27 > 0:52:28If I want to reach the books over there,

0:52:28 > 0:52:31I can't pick up the steps because they're full of bricks.

0:52:31 > 0:52:33Oh, you want them to be really practical, don't you?

0:52:33 > 0:52:36Whereas I just think it's quite a clever little idea.

0:52:36 > 0:52:40Our criticism of Anne has always been that she's a little bit bitty,

0:52:40 > 0:52:43but here, I think she's beginning to succeed.

0:52:43 > 0:52:46I think, in terms of cohesion, it's a big success.

0:52:46 > 0:52:48My biggest concern about this scheme

0:52:48 > 0:52:50was it was going to be too traditional,

0:52:50 > 0:52:52using William Morris wallpapers,

0:52:52 > 0:52:56lots of applique and embroidery, that's not contemporary to me.

0:52:56 > 0:53:00But, now I'm in the space, I think the fresh pale blues on the walls,

0:53:00 > 0:53:04these really punchy purples and limes, I'm just loving the colours.

0:53:04 > 0:53:06Of course you are, look at that.

0:53:06 > 0:53:09- That skirt you're wearing is very contemporary.- Exactly.

0:53:09 > 0:53:11And I think these are contemporary colours.

0:53:11 > 0:53:14I think it's her colour scheme that's actually rescued her

0:53:14 > 0:53:15from not fulfilling the brief.

0:53:15 > 0:53:18I think I met the brief, you know,

0:53:18 > 0:53:22exceeded expectations from the homeowner's perspective.

0:53:22 > 0:53:26- Right, come in. New front room. - Oh, wow!

0:53:27 > 0:53:28What do you think?

0:53:28 > 0:53:33It feels very Arts and Crafty, yet it feels kind of contemporary

0:53:33 > 0:53:36and it's got a bit of colour and character.

0:53:36 > 0:53:39I just think she's done a fantastic job with the window.

0:53:39 > 0:53:42And the design on the cushions with the shoes, it's really nice.

0:53:42 > 0:53:45What about the fireplace? A new centrepiece to the room?

0:53:45 > 0:53:46Absolutely gorgeous.

0:53:46 > 0:53:49I can picture this at Christmas time, it'll look great.

0:53:49 > 0:53:51- It just feels really homely, doesn't it?- Hm.

0:53:54 > 0:53:56With all three rooms scrutinised,

0:53:56 > 0:53:59the amateur designers await their fate.

0:54:00 > 0:54:04Yeah, very nervous. I'm not ready for this journey to end.

0:54:04 > 0:54:06I'm still feeling pretty confident,

0:54:06 > 0:54:08but I know how good the other two are,

0:54:08 > 0:54:11but I think I did a good job and I think I've still got a good chance.

0:54:11 > 0:54:14Of course, I want to get through to the next round.

0:54:14 > 0:54:17If Craig and Talie went through and I didn't,

0:54:17 > 0:54:20that would be something that I would not expect.

0:54:25 > 0:54:28It's second round and we are in such beautiful surroundings.

0:54:28 > 0:54:31You two must be expecting a lot from the designers.

0:54:31 > 0:54:33Talie was a bit of a box ticker last time, you felt.

0:54:33 > 0:54:36This time you wanted to see her be more creative. Was she?

0:54:36 > 0:54:39I can't really knock it, it was a very competent

0:54:39 > 0:54:40and comprehensive scheme.

0:54:40 > 0:54:43But I wanted to see it being a bit more voluptuous,

0:54:43 > 0:54:46a bit more generous, excessive,

0:54:46 > 0:54:48because that's what glamour is all about.

0:54:48 > 0:54:53Well, judges, from the homeowner, we had tears...

0:54:53 > 0:54:56of joy. She loved it.

0:54:56 > 0:54:59That's brilliant, because there's no doubt that that room is going

0:54:59 > 0:55:02to make that homeowner feel like a complete superstar.

0:55:02 > 0:55:05The question for us is, have we got a superstar designer?

0:55:05 > 0:55:08Did Craig bring boho Paris to Bournville?

0:55:08 > 0:55:12The tough thing about creating a bohemian style is it's usually

0:55:12 > 0:55:16something that grows slowly over time, you collect odd pieces.

0:55:16 > 0:55:18It's really creative, very artistic,

0:55:18 > 0:55:22but he's had to pull it together in a very short space of time.

0:55:22 > 0:55:25The result, a bit of a mishmash.

0:55:25 > 0:55:26Oh, would you say that?

0:55:26 > 0:55:30I think he created a really uplifting space

0:55:30 > 0:55:34which I'm sort of guessing that the homeowner absolutely loves.

0:55:34 > 0:55:36The homeowners were kind of bamboozled

0:55:36 > 0:55:40by how much had been achieved in that one small room.

0:55:40 > 0:55:44- And they loved, they loved it. - I told you they'd like it.

0:55:44 > 0:55:47Anne was asked for a sophisticated reception room that mixed

0:55:47 > 0:55:50contemporary with period details. Did she deliver it?

0:55:50 > 0:55:53Well, this is the problem that we've got with judging Anne's room,

0:55:53 > 0:55:56because it's lovely and it's very period,

0:55:56 > 0:55:59but they did ask for a contemporary scheme.

0:55:59 > 0:56:01And arguably, it isn't that.

0:56:01 > 0:56:04Well, the homeowner didn't seem to mind the lack of contemporary edge,

0:56:04 > 0:56:07they loved the period detail, they adored what she'd done.

0:56:07 > 0:56:08She put the soul back in that house.

0:56:08 > 0:56:12And actually, I also think that the design she's created

0:56:12 > 0:56:13has a relevance to today.

0:56:15 > 0:56:18The judges have come to a decision.

0:56:18 > 0:56:22Model suburbs like Bournville were all about transforming lives through design.

0:56:22 > 0:56:25A lesson, I hope, that soaked into you three this time.

0:56:25 > 0:56:29And what I love about this area is every house is completely different.

0:56:29 > 0:56:32And you guys have created three very individual interiors.

0:56:32 > 0:56:35And I have to say, you all got very challenging briefs,

0:56:35 > 0:56:38but you all rose to those challenges

0:56:38 > 0:56:41and have achieved some really good interiors.

0:56:41 > 0:56:43These two, though, have made their decision

0:56:43 > 0:56:47about the designer that will not be going through to the next round.

0:56:47 > 0:56:49And the designer not going through...

0:56:53 > 0:56:55- ..is Craig.- Brilliant.

0:56:56 > 0:57:01- I'm sorry, Craig.- Thank you.- Well done though.- Thank you very much.

0:57:01 > 0:57:04- It's been great. - Have you enjoyed it?- I have.

0:57:04 > 0:57:07Of course I'm disappointed. I am disappointed.

0:57:07 > 0:57:10I've met some fantastic people.

0:57:10 > 0:57:15And I've learnt a lot and will still continue to do interior design,

0:57:15 > 0:57:18even if it's just on my own home.

0:57:20 > 0:57:23We really hoped that Craig could show us that he was versatile,

0:57:23 > 0:57:25that he'd break out of his comfort zone.

0:57:25 > 0:57:28However, his understanding of different looks and styles

0:57:28 > 0:57:29is yet to be fully developed.

0:57:29 > 0:57:32Therefore he's not ready to go any further in this competition.

0:57:32 > 0:57:34Thank you very much.

0:57:34 > 0:57:37I'm just happy to get through.

0:57:37 > 0:57:39I'll be throwing myself at the next one.

0:57:39 > 0:57:40My concern with Anne is

0:57:40 > 0:57:43she does rely on historical references in her schemes.

0:57:43 > 0:57:46And look, if a homeowner asks for contemporary,

0:57:46 > 0:57:48I want to see that she can deliver that.

0:57:48 > 0:57:54- It's been a pleasure, an absolute pleasure.- I'm so pleased.

0:57:54 > 0:57:57I'm actually lost for words on how I feel at the moment

0:57:57 > 0:58:00and I can't believe I'm still in the competition.

0:58:00 > 0:58:03So I'm really proud of myself, really proud.

0:58:03 > 0:58:05We got a bit of creativity.

0:58:05 > 0:58:07But if she's going to go much further in this competition,

0:58:07 > 0:58:11we want to see some originality and some innovation from her.

0:58:14 > 0:58:17Next time, in Yorkshire farmhouses, Talie...

0:58:17 > 0:58:19Ha!

0:58:19 > 0:58:20..and Anne...

0:58:20 > 0:58:22A bit of a leap of faith for you, I know.

0:58:22 > 0:58:25..transform a kitchen each to prove they've got what it takes

0:58:25 > 0:58:27to be a quarterfinalist.

0:58:27 > 0:58:30The designer going through is...
