0:00:02 > 0:00:03I'm constantly taken aback

0:00:03 > 0:00:06by the huge variety of property styles in Britain,

0:00:06 > 0:00:09from characterful timber-framed cottages to grand townhouses.

0:00:09 > 0:00:11But sometimes the insides

0:00:11 > 0:00:15don't live up to the expectations on the outside.

0:00:15 > 0:00:18So, we've gathered together the most talented amateur interior designers,

0:00:18 > 0:00:22who think they could be the next big thing, to show us how it's done.

0:00:22 > 0:00:24But it's not as easy as it looks.

0:00:24 > 0:00:27- Argh!- I've got self-doubt creeping in.- Yes!

0:00:27 > 0:00:30Across three knockout episodes,

0:00:30 > 0:00:34a group of designers will compete for one place in finals week.

0:00:34 > 0:00:36It seems like there's so much to do.

0:00:36 > 0:00:38No pressure(!)

0:00:38 > 0:00:39Good job. I like it.

0:00:39 > 0:00:44Judging them, two industry experts - Daniel Hopwood...

0:00:44 > 0:00:46To make it through to the final four,

0:00:46 > 0:00:48they will have to impress with every inch of their designs.

0:00:48 > 0:00:50..and Sophie Robinson.

0:00:50 > 0:00:53These designs really do need to be outstanding.

0:00:53 > 0:00:56They'll be scrutinising presentation skills...

0:00:56 > 0:00:59That is not the way to present to somebody.

0:00:59 > 0:01:01..artistic flare...

0:01:01 > 0:01:03- Have you ever seen that done before? - No, it's weird.

0:01:03 > 0:01:06..and how well they deliver their brief.

0:01:06 > 0:01:09- Pretty amazing transformation. - Absolutely beautiful.

0:01:09 > 0:01:13In the finals, the best will face giants of the design world -

0:01:13 > 0:01:16- Oliver Heath...- Oh, my word!

0:01:16 > 0:01:18- ..Orla Kiely... - It does look quite rough.

0:01:18 > 0:01:21- ..and Kelly Hoppen. - I want perfection.

0:01:22 > 0:01:24But only one can be crowned winner

0:01:24 > 0:01:27of The Great Interior Design Challenge.

0:01:33 > 0:01:37Last time, three designers battled to impress the judges.

0:01:37 > 0:01:40- Hmm.- What has happened in here?

0:01:40 > 0:01:44One went home. Two of them made it through.

0:01:44 > 0:01:46I think the thing I'm most proud about

0:01:46 > 0:01:48is how a scheme works together.

0:01:48 > 0:01:52That room is a creative masterpiece.

0:01:52 > 0:01:55Now things are getting even tougher.

0:01:55 > 0:01:57This time, the final two amateurs of the group

0:01:57 > 0:02:00are in the remote Yorkshire countryside,

0:02:00 > 0:02:03taking on that icon of rural living - a farmhouse kitchen.

0:02:03 > 0:02:07Two very different designers will be going head-to-head.

0:02:07 > 0:02:10Talie's super organised, super capable and super slick.

0:02:10 > 0:02:15While Anne is an unpredictable ball of creativity and whimsy.

0:02:15 > 0:02:18They'll be battling to please their home owners...

0:02:18 > 0:02:22- Bit of a leap of faith for you, I know.- ..and impress the judges.

0:02:22 > 0:02:24Does she even know what farmer's kitchen needs to be?

0:02:24 > 0:02:26I love it!

0:02:26 > 0:02:30I can't do any more.

0:02:30 > 0:02:33It just seems a little desperate to me.

0:02:33 > 0:02:36But only one will make it through to the quarterfinal.

0:02:36 > 0:02:38PLATES CRASH

0:02:38 > 0:02:41The designer going through is...

0:02:53 > 0:02:55The dales and moors of North Yorkshire have been shaped

0:02:55 > 0:03:00by centuries of farming and are renowned for their beauty.

0:03:00 > 0:03:02These, though, are the Howardian Hills - not quite as famous,

0:03:02 > 0:03:05but just as pretty, dotted with honey-coloured farmhouses,

0:03:05 > 0:03:07like this one here.

0:03:07 > 0:03:12Our designers will be tackling these two hard-working farmhouse kitchens

0:03:12 > 0:03:14to win a place in the quarterfinal.

0:03:19 > 0:03:22So, today, what we're going to be doing

0:03:22 > 0:03:24is taking all of the doors off.

0:03:24 > 0:03:27I've done an agenda. You've got colour-coded...

0:03:27 > 0:03:30- You're organised, aren't you? - I know, I know!

0:03:30 > 0:03:33The designers have been working on a brief from their homeowners

0:03:33 > 0:03:35- for the past week. - This is heat three.

0:03:35 > 0:03:37If you don't take the risk now,

0:03:37 > 0:03:39you don't stand a chance of getting to finals.

0:03:39 > 0:03:43They have a small team, including a builder and a decorator,

0:03:43 > 0:03:48and just £1,000 and three days to complete their transformations.

0:03:48 > 0:03:50This is a very difficult brief.

0:03:50 > 0:03:53Who does a kitchen for £1,000?

0:03:59 > 0:04:02We're going to use this cream but to lighten it.

0:04:02 > 0:04:03Our first designer

0:04:03 > 0:04:08is 60-year-old children's author and illustrator Anne from Tyneside.

0:04:08 > 0:04:12This'll be the washable wood-effect paper that we have.

0:04:12 > 0:04:15Anne shows great potential as a designer because she is so creative.

0:04:15 > 0:04:19However, I need to see that she can really answer a brief

0:04:19 > 0:04:23because she does tend to get rather fixated with the pretty details.

0:04:23 > 0:04:27Anne's taking on a kitchen and porch that was dark, mismatched

0:04:27 > 0:04:29and had seen better days,

0:04:29 > 0:04:33as Sophie and Daniel discovered before work began.

0:04:33 > 0:04:36- Through the porch.- Relatively small kitchen for the farmhouse.

0:04:36 > 0:04:38Yeah, it's pretty gloomy as well, isn't it?

0:04:38 > 0:04:42It is gloomy because there's only one tiny little window over there.

0:04:42 > 0:04:46Yeah, so lighting clearly needs to be addressed in this space.

0:04:46 > 0:04:51This time, Anne can't just concentrate on the frilly details,

0:04:51 > 0:04:53as her homeowner wants a practical kitchen,

0:04:53 > 0:04:56tough enough to cope with the wear and tear of farming life

0:04:56 > 0:04:58and one that's also bright and airy.

0:04:58 > 0:05:01This brief is all about the practicalities

0:05:01 > 0:05:03and we know Anne loves the detail

0:05:03 > 0:05:05but she is going to have to follow this brief

0:05:05 > 0:05:08and she is going to have a happy homeowner.

0:05:08 > 0:05:13I think I just can't go in and do a little bit of foo-foo.

0:05:13 > 0:05:17It has to be foo-foo with, um, with a bit of bottle.

0:05:17 > 0:05:21Anne's take on a practical farmer's kitchen?

0:05:21 > 0:05:24A woodland theme, including heather-coloured cushions

0:05:24 > 0:05:27and both squirrel print and fake wood wallpaper.

0:05:27 > 0:05:29So, I've brought my mood board.

0:05:29 > 0:05:33Not only did Anne need sign-off from farmer Julie,

0:05:33 > 0:05:36she also had to impress Sophie and Daniel who, once again,

0:05:36 > 0:05:39will be judging how well each designer presents their schemes.

0:05:39 > 0:05:43Now, this wallpaper here is designed like a wood cutting.

0:05:43 > 0:05:45- It's of the forest.- Right.

0:05:45 > 0:05:49- Now, that will go on this wall here, on the window wall.- Right.

0:05:49 > 0:05:51And the bottom of it, instead of those tiles there,

0:05:51 > 0:05:56I'm going to make a splashback out of this wood effect wallpaper,

0:05:56 > 0:05:59which gives that rustic effect, so you have a nice chunk of wood

0:05:59 > 0:06:01going around which will look really chunky.

0:06:01 > 0:06:04As well as her wallpapered splashback,

0:06:04 > 0:06:08Anne also plans to add more ceiling lights and a laminate floor.

0:06:08 > 0:06:11Now, here comes decision time for you

0:06:11 > 0:06:13because your doors on the kitchen,

0:06:13 > 0:06:16they're going to come off and be sanded back.

0:06:16 > 0:06:20Now, we can either wash it, using the cream on the walls

0:06:20 > 0:06:22- but a thinner version of it.- Yeah.

0:06:22 > 0:06:25But I know you're a woman who loves real wood,

0:06:25 > 0:06:30- so this is a varnished pine.- So which...? You're thinking more...?

0:06:30 > 0:06:31I'm thinking more that

0:06:31 > 0:06:34because I think it will really transform the kitchen.

0:06:34 > 0:06:36Yeah...possibly.

0:06:36 > 0:06:39- I'm thinking on that one. - You're thinking on that one.

0:06:39 > 0:06:43- I'll think on that one.- We'll need to think pretty quickly about it.

0:06:43 > 0:06:45Do you want to see the doors when they're stripped back?

0:06:45 > 0:06:47- Yeah, strip them back. - I'll let you have a look,

0:06:47 > 0:06:50see what you think and we can decide from there.

0:06:50 > 0:06:52- That would be good.- OK?- Yeah.

0:06:52 > 0:06:57Anne has been given a brief to design a farmer's kitchen.

0:06:57 > 0:07:00Does she know what a farmer's kitchen needs to be?

0:07:00 > 0:07:04Well, she's wallpapering it which I think is a terrible idea.

0:07:04 > 0:07:06This is a kitchen that's all about being worked hard

0:07:06 > 0:07:08and it's a small kitchen.

0:07:08 > 0:07:11Wallpaper's beautifully decorative but it's not very practical.

0:07:11 > 0:07:15Exactly. And she's not using just wallpaper on the walls,

0:07:15 > 0:07:18she wants to use it as a splashback on some MDF backing.

0:07:18 > 0:07:20It's going to last ten minutes.

0:07:20 > 0:07:23That's a complete no-no. That's a terrible idea.

0:07:25 > 0:07:29I'm going to take those tiles off to that point.

0:07:29 > 0:07:32Oblivious to the judges' concerns, Anne is already busy

0:07:32 > 0:07:36explaining to the builder that novel wallpaper splashback.

0:07:36 > 0:07:37That's going to be the splashback?

0:07:37 > 0:07:39Yeah, that's going to be the splashback.

0:07:39 > 0:07:41I'm concerned about using MDF and wallpaper

0:07:41 > 0:07:44- as a splashback around the kitchen. - Yeah.

0:07:44 > 0:07:47Because I don't think it's hardwearing enough.

0:07:47 > 0:07:49I think it's a good point.

0:07:49 > 0:07:51Thinking quickly, Anne ditches the wallpaper

0:07:51 > 0:07:55in favour of the equally quirky idea of using laminate flooring.

0:07:55 > 0:07:58Never used it as a splashback but I don't see why not.

0:07:58 > 0:08:02I think that would look really nice and work with the floor.

0:08:02 > 0:08:03If it's good enough for a floor...

0:08:05 > 0:08:08Not completely sold on her own solution,

0:08:08 > 0:08:11Anne ponders other possibilities.

0:08:11 > 0:08:15Well, the alternative is to leave the tiles.

0:08:17 > 0:08:20So, after all of that, the tiles remain as they are.

0:08:25 > 0:08:27Haaa...

0:08:28 > 0:08:33Next up is 44-year-old furniture restyler Talie from Buckinghamshire.

0:08:33 > 0:08:37There's no doubt that Talie answers her clients' expectations

0:08:37 > 0:08:41but I want her to go beyond that and release her inner creativity

0:08:41 > 0:08:43and show us some great innovation.

0:08:45 > 0:08:48Before work began, this sparse kitchen was the working hub

0:08:48 > 0:08:50of a farmhouse bed and breakfast

0:08:50 > 0:08:53which Sophie and Daniel got the measure of earlier on.

0:08:54 > 0:08:58This is a great space. High ceilings, loads of natural light.

0:08:58 > 0:09:01But it feels quite stark to me, on first appearance.

0:09:01 > 0:09:04This is also her living space and her only living space.

0:09:04 > 0:09:07But remember, this is the working kitchen

0:09:07 > 0:09:09for the homeowner's B&B,

0:09:09 > 0:09:12so it's got to be both very comfortable and inviting

0:09:12 > 0:09:14and also very practical.

0:09:14 > 0:09:17Talie's brief is to create a country kitchen and cosy living area

0:09:17 > 0:09:20with a rustic French farmhouse theme.

0:09:21 > 0:09:24This is the perfect brief for her to really test her creativity,

0:09:24 > 0:09:27cos I think this room just needs a lot more decoration,

0:09:27 > 0:09:29a lot more design

0:09:29 > 0:09:32and it's a real opportunity for her to be rather innovative.

0:09:33 > 0:09:36I've put a lot of practicality in it, a lot of innovation

0:09:36 > 0:09:39and a lot of femininity as well,

0:09:39 > 0:09:42so there's a mixture of all three really.

0:09:43 > 0:09:46Talie's take on French farmhouse combines rustic woods,

0:09:46 > 0:09:51stainless steel, tones of grey and some inventive ideas.

0:09:51 > 0:09:56- There we go.- Oh, wow! It looks amazing!

0:09:56 > 0:09:58Before she started work,

0:09:58 > 0:10:01Talie needed to get the go-ahead from bed and breakfast owner Sally.

0:10:01 > 0:10:05- In the lounge area, we've got a new sofa coming for you...- Lovely.

0:10:05 > 0:10:08..in a really beautiful tweedy grey.

0:10:08 > 0:10:10The doors here, I don't want to paint them or anything,

0:10:10 > 0:10:12I thought I'd jazz them up and put a very subtle pattern

0:10:12 > 0:10:15cos you said you like birds and wildlife and stuff like that.

0:10:15 > 0:10:17That's lovely.

0:10:17 > 0:10:20The units - and I know you were a bit apprehensive about this -

0:10:20 > 0:10:22but I want to paint them grey.

0:10:24 > 0:10:27It is a nice kitchen and the only thing

0:10:27 > 0:10:30I was a bit apprehensive about, with painting the doors,

0:10:30 > 0:10:33was if it starts flaking off and looking worse.

0:10:34 > 0:10:37I've really researched on how to do it.

0:10:37 > 0:10:41The high-end paint and the prep work will be done to a high spec.

0:10:41 > 0:10:44And then you're going to have a few little quirky items around.

0:10:44 > 0:10:47You're going to have upside graters to put your herbs in

0:10:47 > 0:10:51and I'm actually going to make you a light fitting out of whisks.

0:10:51 > 0:10:54Oh, wow! It looks fantastic! Thank you very much.

0:10:54 > 0:10:56- You've done a great job.- Good.

0:10:56 > 0:11:01We know Talie is a savvy shopper but we want her to be more inventive.

0:11:01 > 0:11:03I'm not sure if she's achieving that quite yet.

0:11:03 > 0:11:05Oh, come on, she's really having a go.

0:11:05 > 0:11:08We're getting a balloon whisk light fitting,

0:11:08 > 0:11:11we're getting cheese graters turned upside down as herb pots

0:11:11 > 0:11:14and peacock wallpaper, which I thought was pretty out there,

0:11:14 > 0:11:16so I think that all sounds rather fun.

0:11:17 > 0:11:22Work is well under way, with the kitchen doors removed for painting.

0:11:22 > 0:11:25- I think it'll look lovely.- Yeah. - Cool.- No worries.

0:11:26 > 0:11:28Because it is an expensive kitchen,

0:11:28 > 0:11:32I just didn't want them looking any worse really,

0:11:32 > 0:11:35but you never know - she might surprise me in the end.

0:11:36 > 0:11:41What I'm doing now is I'm going to decoupage the cupboard doors

0:11:41 > 0:11:44because I really don't have time to paint them

0:11:44 > 0:11:48because we're painting the kitchen, so I want to liven them up.

0:11:48 > 0:11:52- It's a trick Talie's used before. - Truly, I am so over wallpapering.

0:11:52 > 0:11:55I think I don't want to be a one-trick pony.

0:12:01 > 0:12:05The designers are well into their first day of work.

0:12:05 > 0:12:07That's not bad.

0:12:07 > 0:12:10But the judges now need to give them critical feedback

0:12:10 > 0:12:13on their presentations and mood boards.

0:12:13 > 0:12:15Oh, God, I hate this bit.

0:12:15 > 0:12:20At this third-round stage, expectations are higher than ever.

0:12:20 > 0:12:22I hope they aren't cruel.

0:12:23 > 0:12:26My presentation, I was a little bit nervous, but that never goes away.

0:12:26 > 0:12:28I'm always nervous.

0:12:28 > 0:12:31So, I've got to go.

0:12:31 > 0:12:35With a quarterfinal place at stake, how the designers are ranked

0:12:35 > 0:12:38could mean the difference between going through and going home.

0:12:40 > 0:12:43You don't have to look too tense. You can relax just a tiny little bit

0:12:43 > 0:12:45because I think we both agree

0:12:45 > 0:12:50that both your presentations were extremely professional

0:12:50 > 0:12:53and some of the best that I've seen in the competition so far.

0:12:55 > 0:12:57I'm going to start off with Anne.

0:12:57 > 0:13:01Anne, lovely presentation, as you well know.

0:13:01 > 0:13:05You had some super samples, some super images for us to follow,

0:13:05 > 0:13:09you presented it very confidently, apart from one little bit,

0:13:09 > 0:13:12and the most important part -

0:13:12 > 0:13:14and it was very clear that it was important to you -

0:13:14 > 0:13:16which were those wood samples for the door fronts.

0:13:16 > 0:13:19It was clear you wanted one of the choices.

0:13:19 > 0:13:22You left it open as an option for her

0:13:22 > 0:13:25and you opened yourself up for disappointment as well.

0:13:26 > 0:13:29Talie had a really strong board. You do beautiful presentations.

0:13:29 > 0:13:32You've got great images on there, they're really tactile

0:13:32 > 0:13:35and you explain every point very clearly.

0:13:35 > 0:13:38Moving forward, I feel you could be a lot more confident.

0:13:38 > 0:13:41If you really believe in yourself and in the project you've designed,

0:13:41 > 0:13:43you'd talk about it in a more confident manner

0:13:43 > 0:13:47and then you're more likely to have your home owner on board.

0:13:49 > 0:13:52Designers, it's a fine line between the two of you

0:13:52 > 0:13:55but a decision has to be made on who's going to be first

0:13:55 > 0:13:56and that person is...

0:14:02 > 0:14:04..Anne, followed by Talie.

0:14:05 > 0:14:07I'm used to that.

0:14:09 > 0:14:13'I knew I was risking by involving the homeowner in my decision,'

0:14:13 > 0:14:16so I'm really still trying to find that balance

0:14:16 > 0:14:19and I obviously didn't get it quite right

0:14:19 > 0:14:21and I've got to learn from that.

0:14:21 > 0:14:25'I feel a little bit peeved about coming second.'

0:14:25 > 0:14:27I'm sure Anne's was fantastic.

0:14:27 > 0:14:30It's just I know how much time I spent on that mood board

0:14:30 > 0:14:31which was going on ten hours

0:14:31 > 0:14:34but, you know, that's the name of the game.

0:14:39 > 0:14:42Both amateur designers are busy transforming kitchens

0:14:42 > 0:14:44that, so far, have stood the test of time.

0:14:44 > 0:14:48This late Victorian farmhouse certainly looks like it was built

0:14:48 > 0:14:52to withstand the weather, with its narrow windows and thick walls.

0:14:52 > 0:14:55Once, it was attached to hundreds of acres of farmland

0:14:55 > 0:14:58for grazing livestock and growing arable crops, like wheat,

0:14:58 > 0:15:01but the farmers that worked the land didn't own it.

0:15:01 > 0:15:04They rented it from one of the many powerful aristocratic families

0:15:04 > 0:15:08that still preside over this landscape to this day.

0:15:11 > 0:15:14This is where the lords of the manor lived and still live.

0:15:14 > 0:15:16A little bit different, isn't it?

0:15:16 > 0:15:18Castle Howard was designed at the end of the 17th century

0:15:18 > 0:15:21by John Vanbrugh, one of Britain's greatest architects.

0:15:21 > 0:15:25Today, it's one of the grandest stately homes in the whole country,

0:15:25 > 0:15:28a masterpiece of English baroque, all domes and urns,

0:15:28 > 0:15:30pediments and pilasters,

0:15:30 > 0:15:32and still a modest little home for the Howard family.

0:15:41 > 0:15:45Work is well under way in our more humble farmhouse kitchens.

0:15:45 > 0:15:48The builder is sanding down the cupboard doors

0:15:48 > 0:15:52and the decorator is obliterating the colours on the walls.

0:15:52 > 0:15:56So I'd rather than stand around and look like Fifi the Foo-foo,

0:15:56 > 0:15:58is get on with it.

0:16:00 > 0:16:04So, Anne is doing what she loves best - concentrating on the detail.

0:16:04 > 0:16:08I find my mood softens as soon as I start working with fabric.

0:16:08 > 0:16:12Her reversible cushion has a horse print on one side

0:16:12 > 0:16:14and an old tartan blanket on the other.

0:16:16 > 0:16:19I might make myself a nice little hat out of the leftover bit.

0:16:22 > 0:16:24A nice little heather bonnet.

0:16:27 > 0:16:29Anne's creativity and attention to detail

0:16:29 > 0:16:33got her through the first two rounds of the competition.

0:16:33 > 0:16:35Ooh, look!

0:16:36 > 0:16:40It looks like it's got plants growing out of it.

0:16:40 > 0:16:42That looks lovely.

0:16:43 > 0:16:46That is a winning window treatment, as far as I'm concerned.

0:16:46 > 0:16:50But the judges wanted Anne to prove her designs function properly.

0:16:50 > 0:16:53She spent too long doing all the pretty bits

0:16:53 > 0:16:57and not actually thinking of the overall bigger picture.

0:16:59 > 0:17:02You've been given a very practical brief, haven't you,

0:17:02 > 0:17:03- which is quite challenging?- Mmm-hmm.

0:17:03 > 0:17:07- How do you think you're addressing it?- I'm being practical about it.

0:17:07 > 0:17:09That was one of the difficulties that I had

0:17:09 > 0:17:13because it had to be practical, it has to be really functional,

0:17:13 > 0:17:15working farming family,

0:17:15 > 0:17:19and yet, I still need to feel I'm putting my creativity into it.

0:17:19 > 0:17:22I think sometimes she thinks that her creativity

0:17:22 > 0:17:26will make her rise above all those practical demands. She can't.

0:17:26 > 0:17:30- They always will be there. She's got to solve them.- Yeah.

0:17:32 > 0:17:35At Talie's, the doors are still being wallpapered...

0:17:35 > 0:17:38I'm never doing wallpapering again!

0:17:38 > 0:17:42..and a very neutral paint is going on the wall.

0:17:42 > 0:17:44People know me for my colour,

0:17:44 > 0:17:47so this is a quite a muted design this time.

0:17:47 > 0:17:52- But out of her usual bold colour comfort zone...- It's not doing it.

0:17:52 > 0:17:56- ..Talie is having doubts. - No, I don't like it.

0:17:56 > 0:18:00It is too stony. I need to go lighter.

0:18:01 > 0:18:04How about if they colour match this, so they can blend in?

0:18:04 > 0:18:07Playing it safe, Talie's decided to order new paint

0:18:07 > 0:18:10that matches the cream of the existing woodwork.

0:18:10 > 0:18:13It's a pain in the backside. I've never changed paint colour.

0:18:13 > 0:18:16I've always had the confidence in my paint colours,

0:18:16 > 0:18:18because they've always been vibrant.

0:18:18 > 0:18:20I find creams, beige, neutral colours

0:18:20 > 0:18:23are absolutely the hardest to match up

0:18:23 > 0:18:26and if something's not going to be right, I'm not going to go with it,

0:18:26 > 0:18:28I really aren't, so it's all got to be perfect.

0:18:31 > 0:18:33Talie's bold colour choices in the previous two rounds

0:18:33 > 0:18:36proved she could pull off a dramatic scheme.

0:18:37 > 0:18:41Oh, it's exactly what I wanted!

0:18:41 > 0:18:43It's going to look showbiz!

0:18:43 > 0:18:46If you want indulgent and decadent, nothing does that,

0:18:46 > 0:18:48quite frankly, than a really deep purple.

0:18:48 > 0:18:52But it was her lack of innovation that left the judges wanting more.

0:18:52 > 0:18:58I'm not seeing anything here that's wildly creative or new or exciting.

0:19:01 > 0:19:04Tell me about the areas of creativity.

0:19:04 > 0:19:06I'm making a dog bed out of pallets.

0:19:06 > 0:19:09We've got an old farmhouse table that's being made into an island.

0:19:09 > 0:19:11I'm also making a light fitting.

0:19:11 > 0:19:14- That's your star piece, your lighting.- It's got to be, yeah.

0:19:14 > 0:19:17I've got so much faith in it. I love that piece.

0:19:17 > 0:19:19Compared to the last round,

0:19:19 > 0:19:21I've been innovative, creative, practical.

0:19:21 > 0:19:27I'm trying my real hardest and I really want to get through.

0:19:27 > 0:19:29I think she's got some really quite nice

0:19:29 > 0:19:32little creative ideas going on there.

0:19:32 > 0:19:35But a balloon whisk light and a piece of peacock wallpaper

0:19:35 > 0:19:38does not make a Great Interior Design Challenge winner.

0:19:40 > 0:19:42At Anne's farmhouse,

0:19:42 > 0:19:45the discoloured varnish has been sanded off the cupboard doors.

0:19:45 > 0:19:47Right, so...

0:19:47 > 0:19:49Now her homeowner has to decide

0:19:49 > 0:19:52whether they should be whitewashed or left as pine.

0:19:52 > 0:19:54- Which do you think?- I would go...

0:19:54 > 0:19:57- I think it's going to have to be lighter.- I would go lighter.- Yeah.

0:19:57 > 0:20:01- It's more work but I think it'll be...- A better effect in the end.

0:20:01 > 0:20:04- It would be better. - Right, yeah, that's fine.

0:20:04 > 0:20:06- We've got to be a bit adventurous about it.- Definitely.

0:20:06 > 0:20:09- I'm all for adventurous.- OK, then. Let's go for an adventure.

0:20:09 > 0:20:11- Yeah, that's fine.- Thank you.

0:20:11 > 0:20:13Decision made.

0:20:13 > 0:20:17Another item is ticked off Anne's rather large to-do list.

0:20:17 > 0:20:20One down, 635 jobs to go.

0:20:21 > 0:20:24I don't know why I'm laughing.

0:20:24 > 0:20:28Anne's making a whitewash by mixing water into emulsion paint,

0:20:28 > 0:20:31which she'll have to apply to all 13 cupboards doors.

0:20:31 > 0:20:35Well, that one little bit of sitting

0:20:35 > 0:20:38with my little sewing machine was short-lived.

0:20:38 > 0:20:42It was a little moment of light relief in the day.

0:20:48 > 0:20:51Redesigning farmhouse kitchens in three days is tough enough,

0:20:51 > 0:20:55but in this third round, the judges are raising the stakes,

0:20:55 > 0:20:59surprising the designers with a brand-new task.

0:20:59 > 0:21:00The judges want to see you.

0:21:00 > 0:21:04It's just when you're under so much pressure and time constraints,

0:21:04 > 0:21:06it's just the last thing that you need.

0:21:06 > 0:21:08I need it like a hole in the head.

0:21:08 > 0:21:10I know these designers are really good.

0:21:10 > 0:21:14We're going to test their creativity under even more pressure.

0:21:14 > 0:21:18I'm assuming it's another upcycle project. Who knows?

0:21:22 > 0:21:25This van is full of junk.

0:21:25 > 0:21:29We want you to design a stand-alone product, a statement piece -

0:21:29 > 0:21:33something that really encapsulates who you are as a designer.

0:21:33 > 0:21:38And you've got ten minutes to pick out as much stuff as you want.

0:21:41 > 0:21:43Get stuck in, girls.

0:21:48 > 0:21:50Sophie and Daniel will decide

0:21:50 > 0:21:54which designer comes up with the best stand-alone product.

0:21:54 > 0:21:56You can see I'm a skip-rummager, can't you?

0:21:58 > 0:22:00The result will be critical in deciding

0:22:00 > 0:22:02who wins the quarterfinal place.

0:22:02 > 0:22:05I'm not saying I want this but I want to check it.

0:22:05 > 0:22:07- ANNE:- I don't know what I'm doing.

0:22:07 > 0:22:10Anne's rather random scattergun approach includes a coat hook,

0:22:10 > 0:22:13a table, a wire rack and a skateboard.

0:22:13 > 0:22:16I'm thinking of actually going home on this.

0:22:16 > 0:22:18That's what I'm really thinking of doing.

0:22:18 > 0:22:23Experienced furniture forager Talie has pretty much everything else...

0:22:23 > 0:22:24Cool. I'm done.

0:22:24 > 0:22:29..including a wire basket, fabric, a chair and a hostess trolley.

0:22:29 > 0:22:33What the flying flip? What's happening?

0:22:33 > 0:22:37The designers have just 90 minutes on day two

0:22:37 > 0:22:41to transform their junk into a standout piece of product design.

0:22:41 > 0:22:43It's right up my street

0:22:43 > 0:22:45because I like making things out of other things,

0:22:45 > 0:22:48so I was quite happy to push Anne out the way to get what I wanted.

0:22:50 > 0:22:56I think I don't need this challenge at the moment, but it is what it is.

0:22:56 > 0:22:58The judges will find out later on

0:22:58 > 0:23:01if the designers have transformed their junk into gems.

0:23:10 > 0:23:14After a few hours of thought, and despite giving the go-ahead,

0:23:14 > 0:23:16homeowner Julie is still a little dubious

0:23:16 > 0:23:19about whitewashing her cupboard doors.

0:23:19 > 0:23:23Bit of a leap of faith for you, I know, but I do think it'll work.

0:23:23 > 0:23:25With still half her cupboard to paint,

0:23:25 > 0:23:28it's a worry Anne could do without.

0:23:28 > 0:23:32There's been quite a few interruptions, so...

0:23:32 > 0:23:37I've had to just work very hard to get it done.

0:23:39 > 0:23:43Talie's also taking risks with her last-minute colour change to cream

0:23:43 > 0:23:45to go with her grey cupboards.

0:23:45 > 0:23:48Ooh! Oh, that's much better.

0:23:49 > 0:23:51I've definitely done the right thing, yeah.

0:23:51 > 0:23:53This is new, confident Talie.

0:23:53 > 0:23:57I don't really like grey and cream together. It's not nice, is it?

0:23:57 > 0:24:01- Grey and white's nice.- There, you've just said it. I love grey and white.

0:24:01 > 0:24:03- It's very Chanel, actually. - Yeah, but grey and cream, no.- No.

0:24:06 > 0:24:08As day one draws to a close,

0:24:08 > 0:24:11the designers are one step closer to finding out

0:24:11 > 0:24:13who will win a place in the quarterfinal.

0:24:13 > 0:24:15I've just painted for England.

0:24:15 > 0:24:19I don't want to ever see another kitchen door in my life,

0:24:19 > 0:24:22especially if it's made of pine.

0:24:22 > 0:24:25While organised Talie is confident...

0:24:25 > 0:24:28I think everything's gone to plan today, it really has.

0:24:28 > 0:24:31It's ticked along nicely. Ticked along nicely, yes.

0:24:31 > 0:24:34..Anne is feeling washed out.

0:24:34 > 0:24:37Oh, my goodness, I'm exhausted.

0:24:39 > 0:24:41I can't do any more.

0:24:43 > 0:24:47I can't do...any more.

0:25:01 > 0:25:04- Oh, that's brightened that up, hasn't it?- Yeah.

0:25:04 > 0:25:07It's the beginning of the second day and our designers are grafting away,

0:25:07 > 0:25:10trying to meet their home owner's expectations,

0:25:10 > 0:25:13but the hard work has only just begun.

0:25:13 > 0:25:15First, I'm going to tick off what we've done,

0:25:15 > 0:25:19tick off what's got to be done. I definitely need a list at my age.

0:25:19 > 0:25:21OK, I've still got loads to do.

0:25:21 > 0:25:24- What are you going to wallpaper first?- Um...

0:25:24 > 0:25:28I can hardly move my arm through painting for hours yesterday

0:25:28 > 0:25:30and I have to do it all again today.

0:25:34 > 0:25:37In Anne's woodland-themed kitchen,

0:25:37 > 0:25:42a laminate floor is going down and whimsical wallpapers are going up.

0:25:43 > 0:25:46That's lovely. Lovely jubbly.

0:25:46 > 0:25:50- I'll just let you get on cos I've got loads to do.- Yeah.

0:25:50 > 0:25:54After spending most of her first day whitewashing the cupboard doors,

0:25:54 > 0:25:57they're now ready to get a coat of varnish.

0:25:57 > 0:26:00I'm doing it once and then I'm going to do it all again

0:26:00 > 0:26:03cos, you know, obviously, painted wood can chip,

0:26:03 > 0:26:09so it's important we make it as sturdy as we can.

0:26:11 > 0:26:14Rather than varnishing multiple coats,

0:26:14 > 0:26:17Talie's saved time by using a primer before painting.

0:26:17 > 0:26:22That and some manpower - a very different approach to her rival.

0:26:23 > 0:26:27And Anne can't resist a sneak peek at the competition.

0:26:27 > 0:26:30Are they going to be varnished or just painted?

0:26:30 > 0:26:32- They don't need to be.- Oh, OK.

0:26:34 > 0:26:39I'm just thinking about it chipping off cos I'm absolutely paranoid.

0:26:39 > 0:26:43- We've used primer. - Yeah, to keep it on, yeah.

0:26:45 > 0:26:47'Talie's a pretty organised person.'

0:26:47 > 0:26:51She knows what she's doing, she's on target and so, therefore,

0:26:51 > 0:26:54she's going to feel pretty confident about that.

0:26:54 > 0:26:58It's hard to say who's ahead because we're so different

0:26:58 > 0:27:01and it's just down to the execution and who pulls it off

0:27:01 > 0:27:03and, hopefully, we can both get it done in time.

0:27:05 > 0:27:07With her cupboard doors on schedule,

0:27:07 > 0:27:09Talie is trying to pull out all the stops

0:27:09 > 0:27:11to win a place in the quarterfinal.

0:27:11 > 0:27:15The judges keep banging on about me being more innovative

0:27:15 > 0:27:19and this, you know, I'm hoping is going to wow them.

0:27:19 > 0:27:23One inventive design is a movable kitchen island,

0:27:23 > 0:27:26made by attaching wheels to a country farmhouse table

0:27:26 > 0:27:30and topped with a sheet of sleek stainless steel -

0:27:30 > 0:27:32a rustic and industrial mashup.

0:27:32 > 0:27:34It really looks good. It looks the...

0:27:34 > 0:27:37- Mmm-hmm.- Yeah.- The dog's... - The dog's.

0:27:41 > 0:27:44Upcycling and reusing old materials is something

0:27:44 > 0:27:48designers and architects have been doing for centuries.

0:27:48 > 0:27:51This farmhouse is noticeably grander

0:27:51 > 0:27:53than many of the others round these parts,

0:27:53 > 0:27:57perhaps because it was built using the stones from a grand old hall

0:27:57 > 0:27:59that once stood on the site.

0:27:59 > 0:28:01This plot was owned by the Dukes of Sutherland

0:28:01 > 0:28:03until the early 20th century

0:28:03 > 0:28:05and the current owner even has the title deeds to prove it,

0:28:05 > 0:28:09with a Duke's wax seal still fresh on the page.

0:28:13 > 0:28:16Come and have a look at this curious little stone.

0:28:16 > 0:28:18This funny little arrow might look rather decorative,

0:28:18 > 0:28:20but it serves a practical purpose.

0:28:20 > 0:28:23It's a benchmark, very common on rural properties.

0:28:23 > 0:28:26Nowadays, satellite imagery has more or less replaced

0:28:26 > 0:28:30old-fashioned ordnance survey maps but for 100 years,

0:28:30 > 0:28:33cartographers would come along here with their levelling rod,

0:28:33 > 0:28:35put it in here and measure the height of the land

0:28:35 > 0:28:38relative to sea level, so they could chart the landscape.

0:28:44 > 0:28:45As well as their room schemes,

0:28:45 > 0:28:49the amateurs need to prove to the judges their design abilities,

0:28:49 > 0:28:52turning junk from the back of a van into something special.

0:28:52 > 0:28:53This is a timed challenge.

0:28:53 > 0:28:57They have 90 minutes to see if they can keep their cool under pressure

0:28:57 > 0:28:59and deliver a quality product.

0:29:00 > 0:29:02Out of her random assortment,

0:29:02 > 0:29:05Anne has decided to use just the 1950s coat hook.

0:29:05 > 0:29:07So, I'm going to make an egg rack.

0:29:07 > 0:29:10It'll be quirky, I think, because, to be honest, you have to laugh.

0:29:12 > 0:29:16You have to laugh or slit your throat. I prefer to laugh.

0:29:17 > 0:29:20Talie's preferred pieces from her epic haul

0:29:20 > 0:29:23are some swathes of fabric and an old hostess trolley.

0:29:23 > 0:29:25I've decided to make a laundry basket.

0:29:25 > 0:29:28I probably would have dome something a little bit different

0:29:28 > 0:29:32if we'd had more time, but 90 minutes is not a long time really.

0:29:32 > 0:29:36- Both designers have a basic craft box...- I've got glue.

0:29:36 > 0:29:40- ..and their builders at their disposal.- Best be expressive.

0:29:40 > 0:29:42- Supposed to be creative. - Eggs-pressive.

0:29:43 > 0:29:45Cracking!

0:29:46 > 0:29:50Anne's plan is to glue a piece of MDF on her upturned coat rack

0:29:50 > 0:29:52and drill holes for the eggs.

0:29:52 > 0:29:56- Do you want me to do it or do you want to have a go?- No, I can do it.

0:29:56 > 0:30:00I can do it. It's my challenge. I can do. I can do it.

0:30:04 > 0:30:06I'm sure I'm doing something wrong.

0:30:07 > 0:30:10I don't think they're looking for a masterpiece.

0:30:10 > 0:30:12I think they're looking for innovation.

0:30:12 > 0:30:15But you can't make a silk purse out of a sow's ear.

0:30:15 > 0:30:18And you definitely can't polish a turd

0:30:18 > 0:30:20unless you've got glitter to roll it in.

0:30:22 > 0:30:27Fuchsia fabric screwed on, Talie can't resist another flourish.

0:30:27 > 0:30:29We're going to nick the trim off it,

0:30:29 > 0:30:34just to make this laundry basket more camp than it actually is.

0:30:34 > 0:30:38There's nothing wrong with a bit of campness, is there?

0:30:38 > 0:30:41Talie's attempt to upcycle that old hostess trolley

0:30:41 > 0:30:44into a laundry basket just seems a little desperate to me.

0:30:44 > 0:30:48Oh, it's quite glamorous though, with its pink and white fringing

0:30:48 > 0:30:51and the gold bars going across it but I don't know...

0:30:51 > 0:30:53It didn't blow my skirts up, I have to say.

0:30:55 > 0:30:57With the holes drilled in the MDF,

0:30:57 > 0:31:00Anne's plan is to decorate her egg rack

0:31:00 > 0:31:01with grass print wrapping paper.

0:31:01 > 0:31:05I'm going to try this paper cos I like the grass

0:31:05 > 0:31:06and then I'll spray it with varnish.

0:31:06 > 0:31:11But first, she wants to decorate the eggs.

0:31:11 > 0:31:14I'm making little egg warmer hats.

0:31:16 > 0:31:18I just think it's fun.

0:31:18 > 0:31:21- Anne said she likes a bit of humour in design.- Mmm-hmm.

0:31:21 > 0:31:23- And she's come up with... - Egg in a field.- Mmm.- I know.

0:31:23 > 0:31:26- It's quite funny though, isn't it? - It is quite funny.- Little hats on.

0:31:26 > 0:31:28Are we laughing at it or with it?

0:31:30 > 0:31:34- Time is ticking away. - In for a penny, in for a pound.

0:31:34 > 0:31:36Feeling cavalier, Talie's last-minute idea

0:31:36 > 0:31:38is to stick on some pink ribbon.

0:31:38 > 0:31:40It has to be a bit tongue-in-cheek, doesn't it?

0:31:40 > 0:31:42It's got to be a bit of a laugh.

0:31:42 > 0:31:45The finishing touches may not stop there.

0:31:45 > 0:31:49It may have wheels on, we're not too sure yet.

0:31:50 > 0:31:54Channelling her artistic side, Anne is adding some copper trim.

0:31:54 > 0:31:57It's my personality - creative and fun.

0:32:03 > 0:32:05Even though their designs...

0:32:05 > 0:32:07THEY LAUGH

0:32:07 > 0:32:10..may determine who will win a place in the quarterfinal...

0:32:10 > 0:32:13THEY LAUGH UNCONTROLLABLY

0:32:13 > 0:32:15..it's all got a bit hysterical.

0:32:16 > 0:32:20Their masterpieces will be judged tomorrow, once both glue...

0:32:21 > 0:32:23..and eyes have dried.

0:32:26 > 0:32:29While her builder gets on with the practical jobs,

0:32:29 > 0:32:32Anne is happily distracted decorating some plates.

0:32:33 > 0:32:36She's printed a design onto specialist transfer paper,

0:32:36 > 0:32:38which costs roughly 80p a sheet.

0:32:38 > 0:32:41So, I'm going to slide the image off.

0:32:41 > 0:32:44After the image has been submerged for 60 seconds,

0:32:44 > 0:32:47the printed layer slides easily away from the backing

0:32:47 > 0:32:49and can be directly applied onto the plate.

0:32:49 > 0:32:53And then, when it's dry, you can seal it with plastic varnish.

0:32:53 > 0:32:55You wouldn't put them in the dishwasher

0:32:55 > 0:32:58and have your tea off them, but they're decorative.

0:32:58 > 0:33:02I just thought it would be a nice idea, seeing as I'm doing a kitchen.

0:33:02 > 0:33:06So, Anne, your first kitchen. How's it been so far?

0:33:06 > 0:33:08It's been really tough.

0:33:08 > 0:33:09It's been a really tough challenge

0:33:09 > 0:33:12from the moment the brief landed into my inbox.

0:33:12 > 0:33:14- What did you think? - Put it in the outbox.

0:33:14 > 0:33:18- Oh, my God.- That's what I thought. - And also, it's a farmhouse kitchen

0:33:18 > 0:33:20and a farmhouse kitchen is probably

0:33:20 > 0:33:23the most practical kind of kitchen you can imagine,

0:33:23 > 0:33:26so how could you add your trademark whimsy?

0:33:26 > 0:33:29I think you can have a very practical kitchen

0:33:29 > 0:33:33but it can still be about fun, about life

0:33:33 > 0:33:35and it can lift your spirits still.

0:33:35 > 0:33:37Are you still hungry for the big prize?

0:33:37 > 0:33:41I wouldn't be here if I didn't think

0:33:41 > 0:33:45I would like to run off with the prize shouting, "Hurrah!"

0:33:45 > 0:33:48But I've always said, and I know it sounds a bit trite,

0:33:48 > 0:33:50but this is a real home, real people,

0:33:50 > 0:33:55I want to do a good job for them. It's more than... It's not about me.

0:33:59 > 0:34:02I want these to hide this up here.

0:34:02 > 0:34:05It's around the midway point in the competition

0:34:05 > 0:34:08and with still so much to do, the designers also have to contend

0:34:08 > 0:34:11with an inspection from the home owners.

0:34:11 > 0:34:14It'll probably be difficult for her to visualise what's happening,

0:34:14 > 0:34:17so she might feel a bit wobbly.

0:34:17 > 0:34:18Any changes from the home owners

0:34:18 > 0:34:21could seriously set back the designers.

0:34:21 > 0:34:23- How's it going? - All right. It's a bit chaotic.

0:34:23 > 0:34:25We've destroyed your kitchen for a while.

0:34:25 > 0:34:27- Are you going to be finished on time?- Course I am.

0:34:27 > 0:34:30- I've never been late yet.- Oh, well!

0:34:30 > 0:34:35There's nothing that I can see that I don't like, so I'm really lucky.

0:34:35 > 0:34:38Anne's home owner, Julie's, key concern

0:34:38 > 0:34:42was that her farm kitchen remains as practical as possible.

0:34:42 > 0:34:45It is the main hub of the house. It's like a motorway cafe.

0:34:45 > 0:34:47We're in and out all day long, and every day.

0:34:47 > 0:34:50Anne's whimsical decor has got her worried.

0:34:52 > 0:34:55Seeing the wallpaper, that's... Is that going to be really wipeable?

0:34:55 > 0:34:59- The wood-looking one. - The wood one's as tough...

0:34:59 > 0:35:02- I've taken a scrubbing brush to it. - Oh, right, it's that good?

0:35:02 > 0:35:05I tested it, yeah. The other one, to be honest,

0:35:05 > 0:35:07I don't think it's going to get marked up there.

0:35:07 > 0:35:13So far, so good. But anything can happen and usually does.

0:35:16 > 0:35:18Talie is feeling far more positive,

0:35:18 > 0:35:22certain her inventive balloon whisk light will whip up positive reviews

0:35:22 > 0:35:23from the judges.

0:35:23 > 0:35:26I'm just wiring up the light

0:35:26 > 0:35:30and a certified electrician will check that my wiring is OK.

0:35:30 > 0:35:34This absolutely has to have an earth because it's in a metal casement.

0:35:34 > 0:35:36And then...

0:35:40 > 0:35:43..then we have one light fitting.

0:35:43 > 0:35:46In another nod to rustic meets industrial,

0:35:46 > 0:35:49Talie's unique whisk pendants will hang

0:35:49 > 0:35:52from a block of reclaimed wood suspended from the ceiling.

0:35:52 > 0:35:55I love it! I'm so excited!

0:35:57 > 0:36:00I walked into the kitchen, the first thing I saw were those lights.

0:36:00 > 0:36:03- Stroke of genius. - I'm so proud of myself

0:36:03 > 0:36:06because I don't think I was very brave in the past

0:36:06 > 0:36:09and I did things that I knew that I was quite good at -

0:36:09 > 0:36:12paint and furniture and stuff. I put the paintbrush away this time

0:36:12 > 0:36:16and concentrated on creating innovative ideas.

0:36:18 > 0:36:22Oh, wow! Yay!

0:36:22 > 0:36:23Fantastic.

0:36:25 > 0:36:26Oh, can we put...?

0:36:26 > 0:36:29It's not just Talie looking to introduce more light

0:36:29 > 0:36:32- into these farmhouse kitchens. - Can you put it that way?

0:36:32 > 0:36:35Anne's replacing the meagre pendant in her kitchen

0:36:35 > 0:36:39with a brighter multi-bulb metal light fitting.

0:36:42 > 0:36:45But the electricians have discovered a problem.

0:36:45 > 0:36:47So, essentially, there's no earth?

0:36:47 > 0:36:50- There's no earth in the lighting circuit.- Right, OK.

0:36:50 > 0:36:52It's the age of the house.

0:36:53 > 0:36:57It's not unusual for old houses to be wired without an earth

0:36:57 > 0:37:00but it means that Anne's choice of metallic fitting isn't safe.

0:37:00 > 0:37:03I don't know what to do. Is there anything we can do?

0:37:03 > 0:37:05Is there nothing we can do?

0:37:07 > 0:37:08If Anne wants to use her new light,

0:37:08 > 0:37:12she'd have to pay for the massive job of updating the electrics.

0:37:12 > 0:37:16- Well, I can't rewire a house.- No. - You know.

0:37:18 > 0:37:21For a brief that demanded more light,

0:37:21 > 0:37:23being stuck with the old single bulb

0:37:23 > 0:37:26is an electrical shock Anne could do without.

0:37:28 > 0:37:31I hope that the home owner isn't disappointed

0:37:31 > 0:37:33but I can't change that.

0:37:38 > 0:37:40Though electricity is something our designers

0:37:40 > 0:37:43and all of us take for granted,

0:37:43 > 0:37:46when these farmhouses were built there were no such luxuries.

0:37:46 > 0:37:48Through this woodshed here,

0:37:48 > 0:37:52you can find the original coal-fired copper and red-brick boiler

0:37:52 > 0:37:55used to heat water in the days before modern technology

0:37:55 > 0:37:58brought central heating into the home.

0:37:58 > 0:38:01There are more signs of times past, here in the old pantry,

0:38:01 > 0:38:03up on the ceiling with these meat hooks.

0:38:03 > 0:38:05Farms like these would have had to survive

0:38:05 > 0:38:07almost entirely on their own produce,

0:38:07 > 0:38:10curing and preserving meat during the winter months

0:38:10 > 0:38:12and here in the wall is the built-in meat safe,

0:38:12 > 0:38:16perfect for keeping things cool even if, today, it's mostly just jam.

0:38:23 > 0:38:26Talie is keeping pretty cool herself,

0:38:26 > 0:38:29confident that cream walls, grey cupboards

0:38:29 > 0:38:32and industrial elements answer her rustic brief.

0:38:32 > 0:38:34When she says French farmhouse,

0:38:34 > 0:38:38I think, basically, that's a rip-off from an English country farmhouse,

0:38:38 > 0:38:42so, you know, I've gone with a country farmhouse,

0:38:42 > 0:38:47but with the added bonus of having a bit of industrial, so mixing it.

0:38:47 > 0:38:49Theming a room is never a good idea.

0:38:53 > 0:38:55It's approaching the end of day two

0:38:55 > 0:38:57and with a place in the quarterfinal up for grabs,

0:38:57 > 0:39:00Talie wants a catch-up with the competition.

0:39:00 > 0:39:03- I've really enjoyed this challenge though.- Have you?- I have.

0:39:03 > 0:39:07- I've found it...- I'm not saying I find it easy but I've enjoyed it.

0:39:07 > 0:39:11- Yeah, good.- And I feel, I feel quite happy.

0:39:11 > 0:39:14- Really positive. Good. Excellent. - See you later.- See you later.

0:39:14 > 0:39:16'I can't decide who's going to go through.'

0:39:16 > 0:39:18It's in the lap of the...

0:39:18 > 0:39:20I'd say the gods, but in the lap of the judges, really.

0:39:22 > 0:39:25Tomorrow still seems a long way off for Anne.

0:39:25 > 0:39:28Mind you, at this stage, you're just so shattered,

0:39:28 > 0:39:31so can't even imagine doing it all again.

0:39:31 > 0:39:33It's a bit like having a baby.

0:39:33 > 0:39:36In fact, I think having a baby's easier.

0:39:47 > 0:39:50It's the final day of the heat,

0:39:50 > 0:39:53so our two designers have got to pull out all the stops.

0:39:54 > 0:39:56Final day. I'm absolutely shattered

0:39:56 > 0:40:01but I'm running on adrenaline at the moment, so, yeah, bit excited.

0:40:01 > 0:40:07The room's at that point where it still looks messy and a bit scary.

0:40:07 > 0:40:09I just hope I have enough time

0:40:09 > 0:40:11to not feel I'm rushing at the last minute.

0:40:13 > 0:40:16In a few hours' time, the judges will scrutinise the rooms

0:40:16 > 0:40:18for creativity and professionalism

0:40:18 > 0:40:20and how well the designers have addressed their brief

0:40:20 > 0:40:22to decide who makes it to the quarterfinal.

0:40:23 > 0:40:28- That's it, that's it. That's fine, yeah.- OK.- Great.

0:40:31 > 0:40:32In Talie's kitchen,

0:40:32 > 0:40:35the newly painted cupboards are proving problematic.

0:40:35 > 0:40:37Feel that. Do you think that's tacky?

0:40:37 > 0:40:40It's hard because I'm trying to work out

0:40:40 > 0:40:41if it's because they're wet

0:40:41 > 0:40:43or because we might need to finish them.

0:40:43 > 0:40:46I've got a water-based varnish that won't change the colour.

0:40:46 > 0:40:50It's a very thin varnish. Maybe if I go over.

0:40:52 > 0:40:54Hoping it will speed up the drying process,

0:40:54 > 0:40:56Talie adds a coat of varnish.

0:40:56 > 0:41:00But doing it this way could lead to bubbling and ruin the paintwork.

0:41:02 > 0:41:06- And though time is slipping through her fingers...- Voila.

0:41:06 > 0:41:10..Talie is also attempting yet another innovation -

0:41:10 > 0:41:12a clock made from a cookbook.

0:41:12 > 0:41:15I want to get the clock mechanism flush,

0:41:15 > 0:41:19so the front page closes nicely.

0:41:20 > 0:41:22No, bit more.

0:41:24 > 0:41:27So, judges, how are our hardworking designers getting along?

0:41:27 > 0:41:29Let's start with Talie.

0:41:29 > 0:41:31She's really going for it, I think it's fair to say.

0:41:31 > 0:41:34We wanted her to start making things rather than buying things.

0:41:34 > 0:41:37She's made a light out of balloon whisks,

0:41:37 > 0:41:39we're getting furniture made out of old pallets.

0:41:39 > 0:41:42But the thing is, is it just going to be a little bit tacky

0:41:42 > 0:41:44or is it going to have lots of style?

0:41:44 > 0:41:47- I tell you one thing that IS tacky, her paintwork.- What's gone wrong?

0:41:47 > 0:41:49The paint's not dry.

0:41:49 > 0:41:52And she's got, what, less than an hour to make sure it dries out.

0:41:52 > 0:41:54She's going to be in trouble.

0:41:55 > 0:41:57I've lost my twig.

0:41:58 > 0:42:00Where's my twig gone?

0:42:00 > 0:42:03Anne, as usual, is cracking on with design details.

0:42:05 > 0:42:09I'm making a little, um, a little willow rod

0:42:09 > 0:42:13for the curtains to hang on to.

0:42:13 > 0:42:15By tying together a bundle of twigs with twine,

0:42:15 > 0:42:18Anne makes a sturdy curtain pole.

0:42:18 > 0:42:22But by avoiding the practical jobs of putting up plate racks,

0:42:22 > 0:42:26coat hooks, shelves and cupboard doors, Anne still has lots to do.

0:42:26 > 0:42:28We're going there.

0:42:28 > 0:42:31And it's starting to dawn on her that time is running out.

0:42:31 > 0:42:33Yes, yes.

0:42:33 > 0:42:35'I'm worried about time.

0:42:35 > 0:42:37'I know how many cupboards there are

0:42:37 > 0:42:39'to put on the wall and the door handles.'

0:42:39 > 0:42:43I'm just doing little things just to save time later.

0:42:44 > 0:42:47It's absolutely pandemonium in Anne's kitchen.

0:42:47 > 0:42:49Is she going to get it finished

0:42:49 > 0:42:51- or is it going to be all over the place?- It is hectic in there

0:42:51 > 0:42:54but she's just making so many different things, lots of details

0:42:54 > 0:42:57and they're very hard to get finished in time

0:42:57 > 0:42:59and I wonder if she's actually going to manage that.

0:42:59 > 0:43:01I've finally lost the plot.

0:43:01 > 0:43:07# Out on the windy, windy moors, sweet... #

0:43:07 > 0:43:09ANNE LAUGHS

0:43:09 > 0:43:12On day one, Anne did impress Sophie and Daniel

0:43:12 > 0:43:14with her presentation and mood board,

0:43:14 > 0:43:16but how will she and Talie fare

0:43:16 > 0:43:19when the judges see what they conjured up from the junk van?

0:43:19 > 0:43:21The judging is always nervous. What will be will be.

0:43:21 > 0:43:25I think I've come up with something which is true to me.

0:43:25 > 0:43:29I think it's funny, it's quirky and I think people would buy it.

0:43:32 > 0:43:34So, judges, the results of the challenge

0:43:34 > 0:43:38and I truly have no idea what these are. Can you enlighten me?

0:43:38 > 0:43:43- This was a rather smart 1950s coat hook.- And so now it's an egg holder.

0:43:43 > 0:43:46You buy a pack of eggs and you put them in there.

0:43:46 > 0:43:48So, I should think this does serve a useful purpose.

0:43:48 > 0:43:50She also said that she's got a sense of humour

0:43:50 > 0:43:53and this is about being funny.

0:43:53 > 0:43:55I'm just trying to work out why it's funny.

0:43:55 > 0:43:58- The joke's clearly lost on you. - Totally.

0:43:58 > 0:44:01- But I have to admit it does make me chuckle.- And what about this?

0:44:01 > 0:44:05- This is Talie's... What is it?- It's a laundry basket.- Laundry basket.

0:44:05 > 0:44:08I think Talie, though, has just had a heap of fun with this.

0:44:08 > 0:44:09I think it's fair to say

0:44:09 > 0:44:12she didn't take this project particularly seriously.

0:44:12 > 0:44:15- And it shows?- Mmm, yeah.- Yeah. But you kind of like...

0:44:15 > 0:44:17Give Daniel a bit of fringing.

0:44:17 > 0:44:20A bit of fringing, pink and gold - the colours are good.

0:44:20 > 0:44:21The colour scheme works nicely.

0:44:21 > 0:44:24But we wanted them to make something out of nothing

0:44:24 > 0:44:27and what they've made, we have to ask the question,

0:44:27 > 0:44:29is it actually better than what it was before?

0:44:29 > 0:44:34And if you had to pick a winner out of the two, which one would it be?

0:44:34 > 0:44:37I think this one's been on more of a design process.

0:44:37 > 0:44:40She's clearly thought of a practical use

0:44:40 > 0:44:43and then added an extra layer of humour on top too.

0:44:43 > 0:44:45So, if we've got to make a decision

0:44:45 > 0:44:47between two absolutely dreadful items...

0:44:49 > 0:44:52..that gains a hairbreadth of an advantage.

0:44:52 > 0:44:55- What do you think, Sophie? - Yeah, I'd go with that.- OK.

0:44:57 > 0:44:59With neither designer overly impressing the judges

0:44:59 > 0:45:02in this challenge, but both impressing in the briefing,

0:45:02 > 0:45:04it'll come down to which room is best.

0:45:09 > 0:45:12After spending three days and £1,000,

0:45:12 > 0:45:16- Talie is fast approaching the finish line.- We've still got loads to do.

0:45:16 > 0:45:18We're not too much, we're on time.

0:45:19 > 0:45:22This morning, Talie faced disaster,

0:45:22 > 0:45:25after discovering her cupboard doors were still tacky.

0:45:25 > 0:45:29- Do you know what? Seriously... - It's fine.- It's dry.

0:45:32 > 0:45:34In her bid to secure a place in the quarterfinal,

0:45:34 > 0:45:40Talie adds a few more innovations - utensil hooks made from utensils

0:45:40 > 0:45:43and herb planters made from cheese graters.

0:45:43 > 0:45:45Can it sort of go at an angle in the corner?

0:45:47 > 0:45:50Ever organised Talie has even finished ahead of schedule.

0:45:50 > 0:45:54I think I'm done and I've got the whole five minutes spare,

0:45:54 > 0:46:00so I think, definitely, a good cup of tea is in order, yeah.

0:46:00 > 0:46:03I think it's lovely, I really do.

0:46:05 > 0:46:10I feel exhausted, excited and...

0:46:12 > 0:46:14..I feel like I've achieved a lot.

0:46:14 > 0:46:17Talie's brief was to create a practical country kitchen

0:46:17 > 0:46:20and a cosy living room with a French farmhouse feel.

0:46:22 > 0:46:26Three days ago, the room was plain and lacking personality.

0:46:31 > 0:46:33Now, it's been reinvented.

0:46:34 > 0:46:36In the kitchen, rustic meets industrial,

0:46:36 > 0:46:40with dark grey painted cupboards and a stainless steel moveable island.

0:46:42 > 0:46:45The living area has been given a coat of cream paint,

0:46:45 > 0:46:49the cupboards have been papered and a contemporary sofa and rug added.

0:46:51 > 0:46:55Finally, Talie's innovations, such as her cheese grater planters,

0:46:55 > 0:47:01cookbook clock and balloon whisk light add a touch of individuality.

0:47:01 > 0:47:03I couldn't have done any more for this project.

0:47:03 > 0:47:06Each time, I've got better and better

0:47:06 > 0:47:09and I'm hoping the judges will notice the improvement.

0:47:09 > 0:47:12This is heat three, the quarterfinals are coming up.

0:47:12 > 0:47:14If I can get in the quarterfinals,

0:47:14 > 0:47:16who knows what I could pull out the bag?

0:47:21 > 0:47:23The first thing that's hit me

0:47:23 > 0:47:25is it's a lot more contemporary than I was expecting.

0:47:25 > 0:47:29- Exactly what I was thinking. It's very urban, in fact.- Mmm.

0:47:29 > 0:47:31Is it because of the grey on the cupboard door fronts?

0:47:31 > 0:47:33Yeah, I think it's a combination

0:47:33 > 0:47:36of the quite industrial urban grey colour,

0:47:36 > 0:47:39this sofa is quite a contemporary style,

0:47:39 > 0:47:42and then you've got the stainless steel and the bar stools too.

0:47:42 > 0:47:45Which is a bit odd cos what the homeowner wants

0:47:45 > 0:47:49- is a sort of country French style. - Which is a lot softer, a lot cosier.

0:47:49 > 0:47:52One of the biggest changes she's made in here

0:47:52 > 0:47:54is by painting all these cream cupboards

0:47:54 > 0:47:57and it's not looking great, I'm afraid. Was it worth it?

0:47:57 > 0:48:01Especially as I can feel that it's really soft under the nail.

0:48:01 > 0:48:04- That's going to come off in minutes. - Yeah.- No, it's not worth it.

0:48:04 > 0:48:08But moving on to this area, you want to create a more cocooning vibe

0:48:08 > 0:48:10- down this end of the room.- Mmm.

0:48:10 > 0:48:12And that fresh cream isn't really doing that job

0:48:12 > 0:48:15and neither is that very graphite grey.

0:48:15 > 0:48:19But I'm loving this - a personalised dog bed for Daisy.

0:48:19 > 0:48:21And a cushion of Daisy which could live in there.

0:48:21 > 0:48:24Well, this is brilliant. She's taken a photograph,

0:48:24 > 0:48:25had it printed on the cushion.

0:48:25 > 0:48:28We have been urging Talie to be original

0:48:28 > 0:48:29and come up with some new ideas

0:48:29 > 0:48:32and I'm seeing it with a bit of product design.

0:48:32 > 0:48:34This is quite quirky.

0:48:34 > 0:48:36We've got cooking utensils made into hooks over here.

0:48:36 > 0:48:40I really love the herb holders that are actually cheese graters.

0:48:40 > 0:48:43They definitely make me smile and, along with the balloon whisk light,

0:48:43 > 0:48:47all of this is a very encouraging step in the right direction.

0:48:47 > 0:48:49Sleek, stylish, perhaps it is,

0:48:49 > 0:48:51but not suitable for a farmhouse kitchen.

0:48:52 > 0:48:54I've given them what they wanted each time.

0:48:54 > 0:48:56They wanted creativity, I gave them creativity.

0:48:56 > 0:48:59They want innovation this time but the homeowner is, to me,

0:48:59 > 0:49:01the most important person.

0:49:02 > 0:49:05How happy the homeowner is with the finished scheme

0:49:05 > 0:49:08will count in the judges' final decision.

0:49:09 > 0:49:12Oh, wow! It's beautiful!

0:49:12 > 0:49:16- Proper country kitchen? - Oh, definitely!

0:49:16 > 0:49:18And the colour! I love the grey!

0:49:18 > 0:49:20- Oh!- A little thing for Daisy.

0:49:20 > 0:49:23Oh, Daisy, do you want to go and look at your bed?

0:49:23 > 0:49:26Do you think it's going to function well as the heart of the home

0:49:26 > 0:49:30- cos this has to be a proper working kitchen?- Definitely.

0:49:30 > 0:49:32I've got more workspace up here

0:49:32 > 0:49:36and this living area is far better than I had before. It's just...

0:49:36 > 0:49:40It couldn't be nicer. I absolutely love it, so brilliant.

0:49:44 > 0:49:47- Yes, that's all the doors.- Handles? - They're just there.

0:49:47 > 0:49:52As Anne heads into her final minutes, it's all hands on deck.

0:49:52 > 0:49:54Let's get these chairs in.

0:49:54 > 0:49:57A lampshade is going up to disguise the old light

0:49:57 > 0:50:01which, yesterday, Anne discovered, to her horror, she was stuck with.

0:50:01 > 0:50:04Can't think about it. Just do as much as I can do.

0:50:04 > 0:50:07With seconds to go, the last of the kitchen doors is hung

0:50:07 > 0:50:10and there's just time to get one of the coat hooks up.

0:50:10 > 0:50:13- Just put it anywhere you like! - Right, OK.

0:50:15 > 0:50:18- PLATES CRASH - Oh, sorry.

0:50:18 > 0:50:22Sorry, just my nerves. Right, I'm leaving it there.

0:50:22 > 0:50:24That's it. I've lost the plot.

0:50:26 > 0:50:29I've done what I've done. I've done the best I can do.

0:50:29 > 0:50:32I've worked really hard and I think I've done a...

0:50:33 > 0:50:35I think I have...

0:50:36 > 0:50:37..made a bright and airy kitchen.

0:50:37 > 0:50:39Anne's brief was to create

0:50:39 > 0:50:43a light and hard-wearing farmhouse kitchen and porch.

0:50:43 > 0:50:48Three days ago, the room was dark, with mismatching wood finishes.

0:50:52 > 0:50:55Now Anne has created a bright and welcoming kitchen.

0:50:58 > 0:51:01She's lightened up the cupboards with a whitewash

0:51:01 > 0:51:04and added new dark slate effect flooring.

0:51:05 > 0:51:08She's used two wallpapers - one wood effect,

0:51:08 > 0:51:10the other in a woodland pattern.

0:51:10 > 0:51:13She's got crafty, as ever, with reversible cushions

0:51:13 > 0:51:17and unique printed plates displayed on open shelving.

0:51:17 > 0:51:21I think the judges will really like the detail.

0:51:21 > 0:51:27I think they'll like the creativity, so...we'll see.

0:51:36 > 0:51:38It actually feels a lot bigger in here.

0:51:38 > 0:51:42I think the treatment of these doors is an absolute triumph.

0:51:42 > 0:51:45By cleverly washing them, we've still got that lovely grain,

0:51:45 > 0:51:47and she did that herself and I think to a very high standard.

0:51:47 > 0:51:49I absolutely agree with you,

0:51:49 > 0:51:51but we're looking at the practicalities too.

0:51:51 > 0:51:53There we have the wallpaper, don't we?

0:51:53 > 0:51:57And I'm not sure wallpaper really is the most practical choice

0:51:57 > 0:52:01in such a hard-working kitchen, but isn't it a gorgeous pattern?

0:52:01 > 0:52:05It's so right for this lovely rustic and natural setting.

0:52:05 > 0:52:08We've got squirrels and country wild berries.

0:52:08 > 0:52:10The lighting's a bit of a sidestep, though.

0:52:10 > 0:52:12We've still just got one light in this room,

0:52:12 > 0:52:15but I know that there was an issue because the house isn't earthed

0:52:15 > 0:52:18and I know that she wanted to drop one further one

0:52:18 > 0:52:21over the work surface, so I'm going to forgive her for that one.

0:52:21 > 0:52:23Yeah, she had the idea.

0:52:23 > 0:52:25It was a good idea but, in actual fact,

0:52:25 > 0:52:27it hasn't been able to be achieved in the timescale.

0:52:27 > 0:52:31Also, I'm curious to see that she's not put any hooks back on.

0:52:31 > 0:52:32She's run out of time, hasn't she?

0:52:32 > 0:52:35Yeah, because she's been fiddling around, as she always does,

0:52:35 > 0:52:39- on all those little makes. - I'm quite taken by these cushions.

0:52:39 > 0:52:42You've got a horse here, complete with a tassel tail.

0:52:42 > 0:52:47- How cool is that?- And also these plates. She made them.

0:52:47 > 0:52:49- With a transfer.- Look at that.

0:52:49 > 0:52:51It's very clever but has she done and completed

0:52:51 > 0:52:53enough of the practical things

0:52:53 > 0:52:56in order for her to go through to the next round?

0:52:57 > 0:53:02I drive myself very hard, did one for the house owner,

0:53:02 > 0:53:04who's taken a bit of a leap of faith,

0:53:04 > 0:53:09to have the best possible outcome, the best that you can do.

0:53:09 > 0:53:14- The new farmhouse kitchen. - Wow, it looks bigger already!

0:53:14 > 0:53:16Well, you wanted it light and bright.

0:53:16 > 0:53:20Yeah, gosh, definitely done that. The floor as well. It's really good.

0:53:20 > 0:53:22I can't believe how good the cupboards look

0:53:22 > 0:53:24and you can see the grain still coming through.

0:53:24 > 0:53:27- But they make them look much brighter and lighter.- Yeah.

0:53:27 > 0:53:30- Fantastic, is that. - How about this? This is jazzy.

0:53:30 > 0:53:33- That is really good, is that. - Isn't it?- Yeah.

0:53:33 > 0:53:35I won't want to bring anything back in here,

0:53:35 > 0:53:37no dirty coats or anything back in.

0:53:37 > 0:53:41No, I think she's done a fantastic job. I really like it.

0:53:44 > 0:53:48With both rooms scrutinised, all the designers can do now is wait.

0:53:48 > 0:53:50- It's like the shooting range. - ANNE:- It is.

0:53:50 > 0:53:53We're about to stand in front of the firing line.

0:53:53 > 0:53:56- ANNE:- Well, either way, it's been a good ride.

0:53:57 > 0:54:00I would like to go through, just to know what you're capable of,

0:54:00 > 0:54:04just to keep creating, keep thinking,

0:54:04 > 0:54:07keep problem-solving, keep innovating.

0:54:07 > 0:54:09That's what I like to do.

0:54:09 > 0:54:12- TALIE:- 'I'm really nervous about the judging.'

0:54:12 > 0:54:13This is a place in the quarterfinals.

0:54:13 > 0:54:17This is what I really, really want. I have got confidence in my design.

0:54:17 > 0:54:18It's my best one yet,

0:54:18 > 0:54:21so I think if I get through today, I might actually wet myself.

0:54:24 > 0:54:26A tough brief this time.

0:54:26 > 0:54:28A farmhouse kitchen's got to be so practical,

0:54:28 > 0:54:31how could any designer bring some pizzazz to it?

0:54:31 > 0:54:32Let's start with Anne.

0:54:32 > 0:54:35There's somebody that is incredibly creative

0:54:35 > 0:54:37and a little bit all over the place.

0:54:37 > 0:54:39With Anne, she knew she had a lot of practical issues,

0:54:39 > 0:54:42but she can't resist a bit of creativity,

0:54:42 > 0:54:44putting stickers on plates and goodness knows what.

0:54:44 > 0:54:47She got a little bit carried away with that sort of thing

0:54:47 > 0:54:50and ran out of time to put some simple things,

0:54:50 > 0:54:52like putting coat hooks up.

0:54:52 > 0:54:55Home owner loved it, just adored it.

0:54:55 > 0:54:58Anne brought something that the home owner would never in a million years

0:54:58 > 0:55:00have brought to a kitchen like that.

0:55:00 > 0:55:03Who would have put those two wallpapers next to each other?

0:55:03 > 0:55:05They looked really super.

0:55:05 > 0:55:09That room has now got bags of character, oodles of charm

0:55:09 > 0:55:11and a space that you can really enjoy.

0:55:11 > 0:55:14Now, Talie's almost the inverse of Anne.

0:55:14 > 0:55:17With Talie you wanted to see more creativity, more madness,

0:55:17 > 0:55:20- more pizzazz.- And she had a damn good go at it as well, actually.

0:55:20 > 0:55:23- Yeah.- We saw lots of little things popping up in that room.

0:55:23 > 0:55:26I think individual items had some real charm

0:55:26 > 0:55:29and quirkiness about them, but the overall picture

0:55:29 > 0:55:34did feel a little stark, when you're trying to create cosy country.

0:55:34 > 0:55:36I wouldn't have gone for tarmac grey,

0:55:36 > 0:55:38that wouldn't have been my first choice.

0:55:38 > 0:55:41She's really on it. She's very professional in how she works.

0:55:41 > 0:55:44She's very organised. She's a very good box ticker.

0:55:44 > 0:55:46If you squished Talie and Anne together,

0:55:46 > 0:55:48- you might have the perfect picture. - The perfect mix!

0:55:48 > 0:55:50They're poles apart, those two.

0:55:50 > 0:55:52Yeah, but we've got to pick one of them.

0:55:58 > 0:56:01The hardest working room in any house is the kitchen

0:56:01 > 0:56:04and the hardest working kitchen of all? The farmhouse kitchen.

0:56:04 > 0:56:08Exactly, because the practicalities are hugely demanding

0:56:08 > 0:56:11but we wanted to see this element of creativity

0:56:11 > 0:56:13and you've both achieved that.

0:56:13 > 0:56:16And what's really impressed us about both of you guys

0:56:16 > 0:56:20is how much you have really improved across your three projects.

0:56:23 > 0:56:26There's only one space free in the quarterfinals.

0:56:27 > 0:56:31And the designer going through is...

0:56:37 > 0:56:40- ..Anne.- Oh, wow.

0:56:40 > 0:56:41Congratulations.

0:56:41 > 0:56:45- ANNE:- I didn't expect that. - TALIE:- I did.

0:56:48 > 0:56:53I'm going home. It's...it's been an adventure.

0:56:53 > 0:56:55It's amazing!

0:56:55 > 0:56:58Oh, I'm so happy.

0:56:58 > 0:57:01We asked Talie to be more inventive

0:57:01 > 0:57:05and I thoroughly admire her for upping her game on this project.

0:57:05 > 0:57:09And yet, her schemes still lack a level of charm and originality,

0:57:09 > 0:57:11which is the essential ingredient

0:57:11 > 0:57:13we need to see in our quarterfinalists.

0:57:15 > 0:57:19I didn't expect that at all. I'm shaking.

0:57:19 > 0:57:22- I love it!- Do you?

0:57:22 > 0:57:25- I do, yeah. Come here. It is lovely.- Ah...

0:57:25 > 0:57:28It's not easy to go from four people to three to two to one.

0:57:28 > 0:57:31You have to do a lot of work to get there.

0:57:31 > 0:57:35I think I have to start believing in myself that I can do this

0:57:35 > 0:57:39and that the judges are obviously seeing some potential in me.

0:57:39 > 0:57:41Anne gave us a highly creative

0:57:41 > 0:57:44and yet cohesive and integrated design this time

0:57:44 > 0:57:47and she almost got the practicalities right as well.

0:57:47 > 0:57:50Next time, I want to see what it would be like

0:57:50 > 0:57:51if she was moved out of her comfort zone,

0:57:51 > 0:57:55so she's got to start designing with her head rather than her heart.

0:57:58 > 0:58:02- Next time, on the Devon coast, the quarterfinal.- Don't panic!

0:58:02 > 0:58:06- Anne joins Frankie... - I can't take any more.

0:58:06 > 0:58:09- ..Lucy... - Oh, this is impossible!

0:58:09 > 0:58:11- ..and Sarah.- You see this face?

0:58:11 > 0:58:13It's not a face that's happy.

0:58:13 > 0:58:16Our final four must impress the judges...

0:58:16 > 0:58:18If she doesn't up her game, she's going to be out.

0:58:18 > 0:58:22- ..and guest judge Oliver Heath... - I have to say I'm a bit speechless.

0:58:22 > 0:58:26..to win a coveted place in the semifinal.

0:58:26 > 0:58:29The designer not going through is...
