0:00:02 > 0:00:04I'm constantly taken aback by the huge variety of property

0:00:04 > 0:00:06styles in Britain - from characterful,

0:00:06 > 0:00:10timber-framed cottages to grand townhouses.

0:00:10 > 0:00:11But sometimes,

0:00:11 > 0:00:15the insides don't live up to the expectations on the outside.

0:00:15 > 0:00:18So we've gathered together the most talented amateur

0:00:18 > 0:00:20interior designers who think they could be the next big thing

0:00:20 > 0:00:24to show us how it's done. But it's not as easy as it looks.

0:00:24 > 0:00:26- Aargh!- Oh!

0:00:26 > 0:00:27I feel really sick.

0:00:27 > 0:00:29Across three knockout episodes,

0:00:29 > 0:00:34a group of designers will compete for one place in finals week.

0:00:34 > 0:00:37- Ta-da!- It looks amazing. It looks exactly how I wanted it.

0:00:37 > 0:00:39Love it, love it, love it!

0:00:39 > 0:00:44Judging them, two industry experts - Daniel Hopwood...

0:00:44 > 0:00:45To make it through to the final four,

0:00:45 > 0:00:48they will have to impress with every inch of their designs.

0:00:48 > 0:00:50..and Sophie Robinson.

0:00:50 > 0:00:53These designs really do need to be outstanding.

0:00:53 > 0:00:56They'll be scrutinising presentation skills...

0:00:56 > 0:01:00- That's not the way to present to somebody.- ..artistic flair...

0:01:00 > 0:01:03- Have you ever seen that done before? - No. It's weird!

0:01:03 > 0:01:06..and how well they deliver their brief.

0:01:06 > 0:01:09- Pretty amazing transformation. - Absolutely beautiful!

0:01:09 > 0:01:13In the finals, the best will face giants of the design world

0:01:13 > 0:01:15- Oliver Heath...- Oh, my word!

0:01:15 > 0:01:18- ..Orla Kiely... - It does look quite rough.

0:01:18 > 0:01:21- ..and Kelly Hoppen. - I want perfection.

0:01:22 > 0:01:24But only one can be crowned winner

0:01:24 > 0:01:26of The Great Interior Design Challenge.

0:01:33 > 0:01:36Last time, three designers went all-out to impress the judges.

0:01:36 > 0:01:39I have had just about enough of lights!

0:01:39 > 0:01:43- If someone did that in my office, they'd be sacked.- One was sent home.

0:01:43 > 0:01:45Two of them made it through.

0:01:45 > 0:01:49I am absolutely thrilled with how it looks.

0:01:49 > 0:01:52I have delivered what my homeowners asked for.

0:01:52 > 0:01:55Now it's the final heat for this first group

0:01:55 > 0:01:57and the challenge gets tougher still.

0:01:57 > 0:02:00Our two remaining amateurs must take on the grand proportions of a

0:02:00 > 0:02:04Scottish castle in their bid to make it through to the quarterfinals.

0:02:04 > 0:02:07It's a clash of two very different creative styles...

0:02:07 > 0:02:10We've got Frankie - so conscientious,

0:02:10 > 0:02:15- ticks every single element of a brief.- And Holly is defiant.

0:02:15 > 0:02:18If she thinks right, nobody else can prove her wrong.

0:02:18 > 0:02:22- ..as the designers fight... - Oh, my God! This is so tiring.

0:02:22 > 0:02:26- ..to please their homeowners... - Have I shocked you?- So far, yeah.

0:02:26 > 0:02:29- ..and impress the judges.- There's a level of desperation there.

0:02:29 > 0:02:30- Yes, I think so, too.- Yeah.

0:02:30 > 0:02:32I think it's going to look rather over-fussy.

0:02:32 > 0:02:35Come on!

0:02:35 > 0:02:38But there's only one quarterfinal place up for grabs.

0:02:38 > 0:02:41The designer going through is...

0:02:46 > 0:02:49The first thing is to set the scene for this design battle.

0:02:51 > 0:02:55And where better than a magnificent Scottish castle, even if

0:02:55 > 0:02:57it isn't quite what meets the eye?

0:02:57 > 0:03:00Pitfour Castle in Perthshire may look fortress-like

0:03:00 > 0:03:04with its slit windows, its turrets and its crenellations, but,

0:03:04 > 0:03:08actually, it's a refined Georgian stately home in disguise.

0:03:11 > 0:03:13Now that the castle's been converted into apartments,

0:03:13 > 0:03:15our two remaining designers will have to contend with

0:03:15 > 0:03:18the limitations of its listed status.

0:03:18 > 0:03:21They're going to have to think both big and clever, in a reception room

0:03:21 > 0:03:25each, to convince the judges they're worthy of a quarterfinal place.

0:03:32 > 0:03:34The designers are up and running.

0:03:34 > 0:03:39This is my "it's business time" hairstyle! It's business time!

0:03:39 > 0:03:42They've been working on a brief from their homeowners for the past week.

0:03:42 > 0:03:44Aww!

0:03:47 > 0:03:50I'm feeling quite nervous, to be honest with you.

0:03:50 > 0:03:54The competition is definitely getting tougher and tougher,

0:03:54 > 0:03:56bigger and bigger!

0:03:56 > 0:04:00They've each got a small team, including a builder and a decorator.

0:04:00 > 0:04:02I'd like this all painted the darker colour.

0:04:02 > 0:04:05They also have a budget of £1,000

0:04:05 > 0:04:08and just three days to complete their transformations.

0:04:08 > 0:04:11It's really exciting, but it's kind of excitement sprinkled with

0:04:11 > 0:04:14a little bit of nervousness and quite a large amount of terror!

0:04:17 > 0:04:20The first designer battling for a place in the quarterfinal

0:04:20 > 0:04:24is 28-year-old Londoner Holly, who runs a doggie day-care service.

0:04:24 > 0:04:27Colours and wall treatments, um,

0:04:27 > 0:04:31everything above the dado rail is going to be the lighter colour.

0:04:31 > 0:04:35Good interior designers bring a level of originality and creativity

0:04:35 > 0:04:39to a project that goes that little bit further than the brief.

0:04:39 > 0:04:42But in both previous rounds, Holly went too far,

0:04:42 > 0:04:45stamping her own light-hearted style on the rooms, even if

0:04:45 > 0:04:47it meant going against the brief.

0:04:47 > 0:04:50This time round, I need to see her deliver a high

0:04:50 > 0:04:53level of sophistication from start to finish.

0:04:53 > 0:04:57Holly's new room started out mismatched and tired.

0:04:57 > 0:04:59Before she got to grips with it, judges Sophie

0:04:59 > 0:05:02and Daniel sussed out its potential.

0:05:02 > 0:05:04They're tough, aren't they, these open-plan spaces?

0:05:04 > 0:05:08You've got dining, living space and also a sort of corridor area here.

0:05:08 > 0:05:11There's too many pieces of furniture in this room, I think.

0:05:11 > 0:05:13The homeowners have asked for a restrained

0:05:13 > 0:05:15and elegant room in Regency colours.

0:05:15 > 0:05:18The trouble with Holly is she has a tendency to be a real

0:05:18 > 0:05:20kind of make-you-do person.

0:05:20 > 0:05:22We always see lots of little bits and bobs she's made.

0:05:22 > 0:05:25But I think this look just needs paring back -

0:05:25 > 0:05:28dare I say it? - being a bit understated.

0:05:28 > 0:05:31Well, that's exactly what sophistication is all about.

0:05:31 > 0:05:34Holly's version of understated is a muted colour scheme with

0:05:34 > 0:05:38a mix of velvets and florals on the soft furnishings.

0:05:38 > 0:05:40She hopes to keep things elegant with a painted

0:05:40 > 0:05:41and distressed dining set.

0:05:41 > 0:05:45I have no idea what my homeowner will think of my design plans

0:05:45 > 0:05:49because I don't like to count my chickens on this!

0:05:49 > 0:05:52So I'm really quite anxious about it.

0:05:52 > 0:05:55So here is the mood board I've put together for you.

0:05:55 > 0:05:56SHE GASPS

0:05:56 > 0:05:59- Wow!- Oh, thank goodness!

0:05:59 > 0:06:02She got off to a good start with clients Alistair and Emma,

0:06:02 > 0:06:04but Holly also had to impress the judges,

0:06:04 > 0:06:07since the designers will again be ranked on their presentations.

0:06:07 > 0:06:10So colours-wise, I've gone with your sort of duck-egg blue

0:06:10 > 0:06:14and sage, but I've tried to knock it back with a little bit of grey.

0:06:14 > 0:06:18- Great.- So in terms of the layout, we'll keep it fairly similar.- Yeah.

0:06:18 > 0:06:22- The furniture, I have sourced you guys this teak table...- Oh, wow.

0:06:22 > 0:06:26- ..and two Regency octagonal side tables.- And where are they going?

0:06:26 > 0:06:29- Um, I'm not entirely sure yet.- OK.

0:06:29 > 0:06:32One thing Holly was sure about - adding some glitz.

0:06:32 > 0:06:35On the wall behind us, by the dining table,

0:06:35 > 0:06:38- the panels there, I would like to have a mirror in.- Ooh.

0:06:38 > 0:06:40It's really good quality.

0:06:40 > 0:06:43It's mirror Perspex, so it's not glass because glass is really,

0:06:43 > 0:06:44really heavy.

0:06:44 > 0:06:45And, ideally, if you'd let me,

0:06:45 > 0:06:49I would like to do the panels there on the ceiling.

0:06:49 > 0:06:52- That's clever, actually.- I think that's most of it.- That's beautiful.

0:06:52 > 0:06:53I'm incredibly impressed.

0:06:53 > 0:06:56- Haven't got any worries or concerns.- Holly, it looks lovely.

0:06:56 > 0:06:57- It looks beautiful.- Thank you.

0:06:57 > 0:06:59Holly is clearly making a lot of effort to answer this brief.

0:06:59 > 0:07:01She's come up with an elegant colour palette.

0:07:01 > 0:07:04- But there was a lot on that board, wasn't there?- Mm.

0:07:04 > 0:07:08But an air of sophistication is about keeping a level of simplicity.

0:07:08 > 0:07:11She's just doing too much. It's like wearing all the jewellery in one go.

0:07:11 > 0:07:14- Mm.- It's not cool.

0:07:14 > 0:07:15With work well underway on her room,

0:07:15 > 0:07:19Holly's prepping furniture for an exacting paint job.

0:07:19 > 0:07:21I hate sanding things.

0:07:21 > 0:07:25If this was my own furniture, I would not be sanding it.

0:07:25 > 0:07:29But everything is getting done to perfection today.

0:07:30 > 0:07:33I really want go through, I want to nail it.

0:07:33 > 0:07:36And now that I've spoken with the homeowner,

0:07:36 > 0:07:40I sort of have a little bit more confidence that I might be able to.

0:07:40 > 0:07:42God, I hope I have a smooth run on this one!

0:07:48 > 0:07:52Standing between Holly and a place in the quarterfinal is Frankie -

0:07:52 > 0:07:55a former textiles sales assistant originally from Taiwan, now

0:07:55 > 0:07:59- living in Surrey.- Thank you. Thank you, sir.- Thanks.

0:08:00 > 0:08:02We've seen that Frankie can answer a brief

0:08:02 > 0:08:05and that he's the master of sewing.

0:08:05 > 0:08:08But in order for him to get a place in the quarterfinals,

0:08:08 > 0:08:12he's going to have to unleash that inner creativity and show us

0:08:12 > 0:08:16that extra sparkle that makes an interior designer.

0:08:16 > 0:08:19He must show off his wild side in what was a plain room -

0:08:19 > 0:08:23similar square footage to Holly's, but with higher ceilings.

0:08:23 > 0:08:25Magnificent room, isn't it?

0:08:25 > 0:08:27Beautiful - with that wonderful view with the big windows.

0:08:27 > 0:08:29It's extremely high ceilings.

0:08:29 > 0:08:32But, actually, adding more light to this room is really important

0:08:32 > 0:08:35cos it's lovely and sunny on a summer's day like today,

0:08:35 > 0:08:37but in the winter, when the days are short, I notice they've only

0:08:37 > 0:08:40got a couple of lamps in here and nothing at the ceiling.

0:08:40 > 0:08:41That's not going to do the job.

0:08:41 > 0:08:43Unlike Holly's living and dining room,

0:08:43 > 0:08:45Frankie's just got a lounge to do.

0:08:45 > 0:08:48But the big challenge will be meeting the eccentric brief

0:08:48 > 0:08:52from his client - mixing Victorian steampunk and mid-century modern.

0:08:52 > 0:08:55The concern, though, Sophie, is that it could look a bit tacky

0:08:55 > 0:08:57and I just don't know how Frankie's going to handle it.

0:08:57 > 0:08:59I think it's really exciting as a brief.

0:08:59 > 0:09:02I mean, it's almost what the Victorians would have viewed

0:09:02 > 0:09:04the future to be like. There's lots of industrial elements, too.

0:09:04 > 0:09:07But I think, in order to get it really working,

0:09:07 > 0:09:10- I'd say you have to actually really go for it.- Exactly.

0:09:10 > 0:09:14He's now got the stage. Now we want to see the drama.

0:09:14 > 0:09:17Frankie's take on the eclectic brief is a mix of wood panel

0:09:17 > 0:09:20and marble-effect wallpaper with bright blue accents.

0:09:20 > 0:09:24He's also doing a feature bookcase, copper piping

0:09:24 > 0:09:26and wall displays with antlers.

0:09:26 > 0:09:28The brief is, whoo!

0:09:28 > 0:09:29HE LAUGHS

0:09:29 > 0:09:32But I decided not to, you know, run away from it.

0:09:32 > 0:09:35You want it, I'm going to give it to you!

0:09:36 > 0:09:42So it's Victorian steampunk combined with a mid-century,

0:09:42 > 0:09:44- retro colour scheme.- Cool.

0:09:44 > 0:09:49He had to sell his big ideas to client David before work began.

0:09:49 > 0:09:52So your room is going to look like this.

0:09:52 > 0:09:54- Ta-da!- Wow.- Right.

0:09:54 > 0:09:56FRANKIE LAUGHS

0:09:56 > 0:10:00So we're going to focus on this fireplace.

0:10:00 > 0:10:01The copper tube's going to go up

0:10:01 > 0:10:06- and down to sort of give that industrial look.- OK.

0:10:06 > 0:10:08The copper log-holder will deliver steampunk

0:10:08 > 0:10:11while a pair of skull light boxes will add edge.

0:10:11 > 0:10:15- Inside, I'm going to put an image of a skull...- OK.

0:10:15 > 0:10:19- ..made out of floral fabric.- OK.

0:10:19 > 0:10:23But something really traditional could still be really rock and roll.

0:10:23 > 0:10:25Do you think the light boxes that you're going to

0:10:25 > 0:10:27put on the wall will bring enough light into the room?

0:10:27 > 0:10:31- Um, I forgot to mention the one extra floor lamp.- OK.- Yeah.

0:10:31 > 0:10:37- And one small table light to put on this desk area.- OK.

0:10:37 > 0:10:40So I think that's got quite a lot of lighting going on.

0:10:40 > 0:10:43- It's a lot more than there is now, yeah.- Yeah.

0:10:43 > 0:10:46So have you got any other questions for me?

0:10:46 > 0:10:50- No, no. I think you've pretty much nailed the brief.- Have I?- Yeah.

0:10:50 > 0:10:51Great!

0:10:51 > 0:10:55I think Frankie's gone quite a long way to make sense of that

0:10:55 > 0:10:56very elaborate brief. But, you know,

0:10:56 > 0:11:00I would kind of like to see a little bit more in the detail, you know.

0:11:00 > 0:11:04Steampunk is classically top hats, monocles, goggles,

0:11:04 > 0:11:07automatons, taxidermy. I mean, it's out there.

0:11:07 > 0:11:09He's still on the right side of taste.

0:11:09 > 0:11:12- Yeah, it's all looking a bit elegant, isn't it?- Mm.

0:11:14 > 0:11:17The task of decorating the huge room is underway, but Frankie's

0:11:17 > 0:11:21trying to unleash his wild side from the safety of his sewing machine.

0:11:21 > 0:11:24Because I'm only going to make three cushions,

0:11:24 > 0:11:27I need to make something really eye-catching.

0:11:27 > 0:11:31So I'm doing something called chunky piping around the cushion.

0:11:34 > 0:11:35Now, this is the exciting bit!

0:11:37 > 0:11:41Yup, I'm happy. Chunky piping!

0:11:49 > 0:11:52Frankie and Holly are getting stuck into their workloads.

0:11:52 > 0:11:54That looks nice, actually.

0:11:54 > 0:11:56But now, they'll be judged on their mood boards

0:11:56 > 0:11:58and presentation skills.

0:11:58 > 0:12:02Frankie has beaten Holly both times so far, but that doesn't faze her.

0:12:02 > 0:12:05I feel quite confident, although this, you know,

0:12:05 > 0:12:09historically, hasn't been my strength.

0:12:09 > 0:12:12But it's something I put a lot of effort into this time.

0:12:13 > 0:12:17Should I feel confident or not? Um... I don't know.

0:12:17 > 0:12:22I'm not actually a very confident or, you know, a cocky person.

0:12:23 > 0:12:24I just...

0:12:26 > 0:12:27I've done my best.

0:12:29 > 0:12:32Only one can go through to the quarterfinal.

0:12:33 > 0:12:36So how well they do here is crucial.

0:12:38 > 0:12:42Holly, I love the rapport that you had with your client.

0:12:42 > 0:12:47Love the board. It was very creative, but you didn't have a set of plans -

0:12:47 > 0:12:50a crucial part of a presentation, and you should know that.

0:12:50 > 0:12:51You're at the third stage right now.

0:12:51 > 0:12:54I understand what you're saying. I think the reason I didn't do...

0:12:54 > 0:12:56It was something I thought about, but the reason

0:12:56 > 0:12:59I didn't do any plans was because I'm not changing the layout.

0:12:59 > 0:13:01You had a couple of side tables which you've yet to decide

0:13:01 > 0:13:04where they're going to go. A plan might have helped with that.

0:13:04 > 0:13:07- I still don't know where they're going to go!- There you go, you see.

0:13:07 > 0:13:10- That's why you needed a plan. - Exactly.

0:13:10 > 0:13:13Frankie, you delivered a presentation that we

0:13:13 > 0:13:16thoroughly expect from you - really high-level, very professional,

0:13:16 > 0:13:19and you've got all your plans, technical drawings,

0:13:19 > 0:13:23fully rendered, coloured, three-dimensional image.

0:13:23 > 0:13:26- You do it.- So there we are.

0:13:26 > 0:13:28We've got one very controlled designer

0:13:28 > 0:13:31and one very extremely creative designer.

0:13:31 > 0:13:33And how do you judge between the two of you?

0:13:35 > 0:13:38Well, number one...

0:13:43 > 0:13:44..is...

0:13:49 > 0:13:52..Frankie. Number two, Holly.

0:13:53 > 0:13:55HOLLY LAUGHS

0:13:55 > 0:13:57I'll get there one day.

0:13:59 > 0:14:03It's a bit disappointing seeing as, like, I really put my sort of...

0:14:03 > 0:14:04Really put a lot of effort into that.

0:14:04 > 0:14:07And I don't really think that not having layouts...like,

0:14:07 > 0:14:09plans matters at all, really, in that situation

0:14:09 > 0:14:11because the layout's not changing.

0:14:11 > 0:14:12Third time!

0:14:12 > 0:14:17You know, first place three times continuously

0:14:17 > 0:14:19is quite an achievement.

0:14:24 > 0:14:26Spurred on by the judges' comments,

0:14:26 > 0:14:30the designers continue their battle to win a spot in the next round.

0:14:30 > 0:14:34This is how the professionals, actually, do their tables.

0:14:36 > 0:14:37SHE LAUGHS

0:14:39 > 0:14:44Their aim is to create unique rooms fit for such a splendid building.

0:14:44 > 0:14:48At first glance, Pitfour Castle, with its grey glaring facade, looks

0:14:48 > 0:14:53straight out of a Gothic horror and sturdy enough to withstand a siege.

0:14:53 > 0:14:55But those walls, with their delicate glass windows,

0:14:55 > 0:14:59wouldn't withstand the Big Bad Wolf, let alone a cannonball.

0:14:59 > 0:15:01This castle is one big fake

0:15:01 > 0:15:05and wears its romantic military costume just for looks.

0:15:08 > 0:15:10The house is attributed to Robert Adam,

0:15:10 > 0:15:12one of Scotland's most prolific architects.

0:15:13 > 0:15:15In the second half of the 18th century,

0:15:15 > 0:15:17new money from Britain's ballooning empire

0:15:17 > 0:15:19was sloshing round the country,

0:15:19 > 0:15:22and businessmen commissioned architects like Adam to build them

0:15:22 > 0:15:24countless number of stately homes

0:15:24 > 0:15:27in whatever fantasy look they wanted.

0:15:28 > 0:15:30This was called the picturesque.

0:15:31 > 0:15:34You could have any style, so long as the money was right.

0:15:42 > 0:15:44Unlike Frankie's grand room,

0:15:44 > 0:15:47Holly's was originally part of the servants' quarters,

0:15:47 > 0:15:49but she wants to move it up the social ladder

0:15:49 > 0:15:52with a sophisticated duck-egg blue.

0:15:52 > 0:15:55She's giving a coordinated look to two side stables,

0:15:55 > 0:15:57using chalk-based paint.

0:15:57 > 0:15:59They're original Regency tables.

0:15:59 > 0:16:01And I'm trying to make them fit in with the scheme,

0:16:01 > 0:16:05and then I'm going to do a little bit of decoupage on them, as well.

0:16:06 > 0:16:08The judges are looking for me

0:16:08 > 0:16:11to kind of class everything up a little bit.

0:16:11 > 0:16:13So I'm confident that it'll really look fantastic.

0:16:14 > 0:16:16If it all goes to plan!

0:16:17 > 0:16:19In the previous two rounds,

0:16:19 > 0:16:22Holly's playful approach to design impressed the judges.

0:16:22 > 0:16:26This mural on the wall is a total triumph. I love it.

0:16:26 > 0:16:29Her crafty skills didn't go unnoticed.

0:16:29 > 0:16:32We've got a cheeky little bookcase side table here.

0:16:32 > 0:16:33Belt-style stool.

0:16:33 > 0:16:35There are also really good quality -

0:16:35 > 0:16:37I think she's quite exacting.

0:16:37 > 0:16:40But last time, she clashed with her homeowners

0:16:40 > 0:16:41about their elegant brief.

0:16:41 > 0:16:44I just don't want it to be too boring.

0:16:45 > 0:16:47That's probably more of the sort of direction we were going.

0:16:47 > 0:16:51I'll just be completely honest. This is just so dated!

0:16:53 > 0:16:56Now, Holly must prove she can follow a brief and please her clients.

0:16:56 > 0:16:58What's the reason behind these colours?

0:16:58 > 0:17:00It's the colours the homeowners like,

0:17:00 > 0:17:03duck-egg blues and sage greens and things like that.

0:17:03 > 0:17:05But I wanted to make it a bit more modern than that,

0:17:05 > 0:17:08hence why they've kind of got a little bit of grey to them.

0:17:08 > 0:17:11So, essentially what you are going for is classic,

0:17:11 > 0:17:14- but with a bit of a Holly edge to it, as well?- Hopefully. Yes. Yeah.

0:17:14 > 0:17:17- There are still some Holly edge items in here.- Like what?

0:17:18 > 0:17:21The mirrors, I think, will be quite impactful and give it that

0:17:21 > 0:17:24little bit more glamour, that little bit more kind of pushing it forward.

0:17:24 > 0:17:28- Cos you talked about those being a way of bringing more light into the room.- Yes, absolutely.

0:17:28 > 0:17:31But you think they're going to look quite funky, as well?

0:17:31 > 0:17:33Yeah, I think they're just going to be a little bit different,

0:17:33 > 0:17:36and I think they'll really bring out the panelling.

0:17:36 > 0:17:38So, what you're doing is actually creating

0:17:38 > 0:17:40a bit of a glitter ball in an 18th-century home.

0:17:40 > 0:17:43Yes, exactly. The lighted floor arrives tomorrow.

0:17:43 > 0:17:44LAUGHTER

0:17:44 > 0:17:47She wants to add a bit of glamour and glitz into that room.

0:17:47 > 0:17:50I don't think it's going to be the restrained sophistication

0:17:50 > 0:17:52that those homeowners are really after.

0:17:52 > 0:17:55It's just feeling a little bit D-I-S-C-O for me.

0:17:57 > 0:17:59While Holly must tone things down,

0:17:59 > 0:18:03Frankie needs to prove he can crank it up with his steampunk scheme.

0:18:04 > 0:18:07As the alcove is painted electric blue to create a drinks area,

0:18:07 > 0:18:09he starts on his skull-shaped light box.

0:18:10 > 0:18:14I'm going to create a face of a skull

0:18:14 > 0:18:16out of a very floral fabric,

0:18:16 > 0:18:19trying to make it actually quite rock and roll.

0:18:20 > 0:18:24He's using strips of ruched fabric to create the facial features.

0:18:29 > 0:18:31Do you know what?

0:18:31 > 0:18:34Normally, I would just put it like that,

0:18:34 > 0:18:39but I think because the judge asked me to lose a bit, why not?

0:18:39 > 0:18:40Let's do that.

0:18:40 > 0:18:42LAUGHTER

0:18:43 > 0:18:47Using classic fabrics is something textiles expert Frankie

0:18:47 > 0:18:49has excelled at throughout the competition.

0:18:49 > 0:18:52What lovely clean lines, you know, pared back,

0:18:52 > 0:18:54and very minimally styled.

0:18:54 > 0:18:57In the last round, the judges were impressed by his eye for detail.

0:18:57 > 0:19:00And he's done this himself, he's aged it down,

0:19:00 > 0:19:01which is actually really impressive.

0:19:01 > 0:19:05But they also thought he'd been playing it too safe.

0:19:05 > 0:19:07I mean, this is the 21st century.

0:19:07 > 0:19:09And that's just old-fashioned and frumpy.

0:19:12 > 0:19:13What about this steampunk look?

0:19:13 > 0:19:17Believe it or not, when I actually saw the brief, I...

0:19:17 > 0:19:21You know, before that, I prayed, please, no industrial.

0:19:21 > 0:19:23LAUGHTER

0:19:23 > 0:19:24Oh, no!

0:19:24 > 0:19:27Because I am not very good at industrial,

0:19:27 > 0:19:28I've never done it before.

0:19:28 > 0:19:30Well, Frankie, you've got two and a half days,

0:19:30 > 0:19:33- is all that I'm going to say to you, OK, on that note.- Yeah.

0:19:38 > 0:19:40Redesigning these rooms in three days is tough enough.

0:19:42 > 0:19:43But in this third round,

0:19:43 > 0:19:46the judges also have a surprise in store for the designers.

0:19:46 > 0:19:47- Frankie?- Huh?

0:19:47 > 0:19:49- The judges have called for you.- OK.

0:19:49 > 0:19:52We're looking for a quarterfinalist here,

0:19:52 > 0:19:55so we're setting Frankie and Holly a tough new challenge

0:19:55 > 0:19:57where they're going to have to think on their feet.

0:19:58 > 0:20:01Designers, you're going to have the opportunity

0:20:01 > 0:20:04to rummage around inside this van,

0:20:04 > 0:20:07take any items that you like the look of,

0:20:07 > 0:20:11and transform them into a homeware product that you're really proud of.

0:20:11 > 0:20:12Oh, brilliant.

0:20:12 > 0:20:14LAUGHTER

0:20:14 > 0:20:18It doesn't have to relate to the room that you're working on.

0:20:18 > 0:20:21This is a golden opportunity for you to showcase

0:20:21 > 0:20:24your own creativity and your own style.

0:20:24 > 0:20:26- How exciting!- Ready?

0:20:30 > 0:20:31Well, where to start, really?

0:20:31 > 0:20:34The designers have just ten minutes to pick what they want.

0:20:34 > 0:20:37- FRANKIE:- Gosh, I don't want anything, to be honest with you.

0:20:37 > 0:20:39LAUGHTER

0:20:39 > 0:20:45- This challenge is possibly the worst ever. You want a tacky...- No.

0:20:45 > 0:20:48Picture frame? Fabric?

0:20:48 > 0:20:51Not surprised to see Frankie's got a basket full of fabric.

0:20:51 > 0:20:53I'm fishing!

0:20:53 > 0:20:56Among Frankie's loot, a chair, cushions, fabric,

0:20:56 > 0:20:58and framed embroidery.

0:20:58 > 0:21:00What I've got...

0:21:00 > 0:21:01Very disappointed.

0:21:03 > 0:21:05- DANIEL:- Guys, just to warn you, you've got a minute left.

0:21:05 > 0:21:09Holly's pick and mix includes shiny metals, a Perspex table,

0:21:09 > 0:21:11old jeans, and a plant stand.

0:21:11 > 0:21:14I've just tried to grab a little bit of everything,

0:21:14 > 0:21:17but I'm thinking maybe something like a light, a lamp,

0:21:17 > 0:21:18something like that.

0:21:19 > 0:21:21OK, guys, ten minutes is up.

0:21:23 > 0:21:25This is a timed challenge,

0:21:25 > 0:21:28and the designers get 90 minutes on day two to complete it.

0:21:29 > 0:21:31Loss of words, really, I mean...

0:21:31 > 0:21:35I really don't know how to impress the judges. It seems quite...

0:21:35 > 0:21:36Pretty hard, to me.

0:21:36 > 0:21:38I had a look at what Frankie's chosen.

0:21:39 > 0:21:43I think he's played it safe, I think he's going to make a cushion.

0:21:44 > 0:21:46You're not going to win with cushions.

0:21:46 > 0:21:48It's late afternoon,

0:21:48 > 0:21:50and the designers are hard at work on their room schemes.

0:21:50 > 0:21:53I've started to see some shape now.

0:21:53 > 0:21:55I wasn't going to do this, originally,

0:21:55 > 0:21:57I was just going to paint the table.

0:21:57 > 0:21:59Holly wants to prove Frankie's not the only one

0:21:59 > 0:22:01who's creative with fabric.

0:22:01 > 0:22:05She's adding a Chesterfield-effect top to the coffee table.

0:22:05 > 0:22:08So, I'm making some buttons.

0:22:08 > 0:22:10I've got a two pence piece,

0:22:10 > 0:22:13and then I'm just going to stitch around the edges.

0:22:14 > 0:22:18This is just a way to make it look a lot more expensive.

0:22:18 > 0:22:20Meanwhile, Frankie's going wild,

0:22:20 > 0:22:23gilding six sets of antlers in copper leaf.

0:22:23 > 0:22:28And you just turn some really simple object into something

0:22:28 > 0:22:30that looks very expensive.

0:22:31 > 0:22:34I think I'm going to do some eye shadow.

0:22:34 > 0:22:35How about that?

0:22:39 > 0:22:41As much as I've got to do this kind of, you know,

0:22:41 > 0:22:43sophisticated scheme,

0:22:43 > 0:22:45I really do want to pull all the stops out,

0:22:45 > 0:22:47because Frankie's incredibly talented.

0:22:47 > 0:22:48Oh, nice!

0:22:50 > 0:22:51Yay!

0:22:56 > 0:22:58The first day is drawing to a close,

0:22:58 > 0:23:02giving Holly a chance to check out her rival's progress.

0:23:02 > 0:23:04- They are...- Did you shoot these deer yourself, Frankie,

0:23:04 > 0:23:06in the aid of interior design?

0:23:06 > 0:23:08- Yeah!- Good stuff!

0:23:08 > 0:23:11So, this is going to be inside the bookshelf.

0:23:11 > 0:23:12They're upside down!

0:23:14 > 0:23:17- So you're going to have to wallpaper all of this?- Yes.

0:23:20 > 0:23:22It sounds like he's got a lot to do,

0:23:22 > 0:23:25because he hasn't started hanging the wallpaper yet,

0:23:25 > 0:23:28and he's hanging the wallpaper on every single wall.

0:23:28 > 0:23:31Frankie's also trying to get the measure of Holly.

0:23:31 > 0:23:33- How's your day gone? - It's going all right.

0:23:33 > 0:23:35To be honest, it's been plain sailing.

0:23:35 > 0:23:38There's going to be a problem, we just don't know what it is yet.

0:23:38 > 0:23:40- Yeah.- Yeah.

0:23:40 > 0:23:47Can I beat Holly? Yes, I could just punch her! No... No...

0:23:47 > 0:23:51No, it's not that. Er... It's very difficult.

0:23:51 > 0:23:55- The size of that room is just... - Yeah.- Oh, my goodness.

0:23:55 > 0:23:57I prefer looking at this view...

0:23:57 > 0:23:59LAUGHTER

0:23:59 > 0:24:02..rather than thinking what happens behind me.

0:24:03 > 0:24:07He is very, very tough competition.

0:24:07 > 0:24:10But, no, I think I'll be able to pull off...

0:24:10 > 0:24:12If I'm honest, I've always had confidence in myself,

0:24:12 > 0:24:13in my abilities, so...

0:24:15 > 0:24:16Yeah, it's just...

0:24:16 > 0:24:18May the best man or woman win!

0:24:31 > 0:24:35It's the start of day two, and, after a day of gilding antlers,

0:24:35 > 0:24:37sewing cushions, and painting furniture,

0:24:37 > 0:24:39Frankie and Holly are in full swing.

0:24:40 > 0:24:43Their room designs have a long way to go,

0:24:43 > 0:24:45and with only one spot in the quarterfinal,

0:24:45 > 0:24:47today could be make or break.

0:24:48 > 0:24:50I'm feeling a little bit fragile,

0:24:50 > 0:24:52a little bit tired.

0:24:53 > 0:24:55I hope it's not too much drama,

0:24:55 > 0:24:57I hope I have ordered enough wallpaper.

0:24:59 > 0:25:01That's very dramatic, isn't it?

0:25:01 > 0:25:02I love it!

0:25:02 > 0:25:04Hee-hee-hee!

0:25:04 > 0:25:05Stayed up late sewing...

0:25:05 > 0:25:08That's the ones that will match the upholstery.

0:25:08 > 0:25:11..which is good, we're ahead of schedule...

0:25:11 > 0:25:12Er... I've forgotten what I'm doing.

0:25:14 > 0:25:15..but I'm a bit tired!

0:25:16 > 0:25:17Paintbrushes!

0:25:21 > 0:25:25The sheer size of Frankie's room means his team has a big day ahead...

0:25:25 > 0:25:26You free to do some more wallpapering?

0:25:28 > 0:25:30..while he's adding more steampunk detail

0:25:30 > 0:25:34to a leather-effect shelf using bronzed upholstery studs.

0:25:34 > 0:25:38I just like to do things properly, make it pretty.

0:25:38 > 0:25:43It won't be 100% perfect, but...maybe one day.

0:25:45 > 0:25:46Ooh!

0:25:46 > 0:25:48See? Did I tell you?

0:25:48 > 0:25:49You can't be perfect.

0:25:49 > 0:25:51LAUGHTER

0:25:52 > 0:25:55Holly's aiming for perfect Regency sophistication,

0:25:55 > 0:25:57albeit with a heavy-handed...

0:25:57 > 0:25:58There we go!

0:25:58 > 0:26:00..or heavy-footed technique.

0:26:00 > 0:26:03While her builder starts on the Perspex mirrors

0:26:03 > 0:26:04for the wall panels...

0:26:05 > 0:26:08..Holly is adding a faded grandeur paint effect

0:26:08 > 0:26:10to the dining furniture.

0:26:10 > 0:26:12I do want to make it less formal,

0:26:12 > 0:26:14because obviously a lot of the elements I'm doing

0:26:14 > 0:26:15are quite formal in there.

0:26:15 > 0:26:18I mean, I don't want to over-distress it -

0:26:18 > 0:26:20I don't want it to look like it's washed up on shore!

0:26:23 > 0:26:25Now, Holly, you've been getting more and more sophisticated,

0:26:25 > 0:26:28more and more classy as the rounds have gone on.

0:26:28 > 0:26:32I think the thing is just because my style isn't necessarily

0:26:32 > 0:26:34that sophisticated, the style I would choose,

0:26:34 > 0:26:36doesn't mean I can't do it,

0:26:36 > 0:26:39so I really wanted to prove to the judges that I can do that.

0:26:39 > 0:26:41Do you feel like you're losing a bit of yourself?

0:26:41 > 0:26:44I have dialled down the excitement and the fun factor,

0:26:44 > 0:26:47but there are still some little pieces going in there

0:26:47 > 0:26:50- that definitely show that.- There's a bit of Holly in there somewhere?

0:26:50 > 0:26:51Oh, absolutely! Yeah, definitely.

0:26:54 > 0:26:56Frankie has to dial up the excitement

0:26:56 > 0:26:59to deliver the Victorian industrial fantasy vibe

0:26:59 > 0:27:00for his steampunk scheme.

0:27:02 > 0:27:05He's making a freestanding log holder for the fireplace

0:27:05 > 0:27:09using £60 worth of copper piping, and different-shaped joints.

0:27:09 > 0:27:13So, you have an L. Or you have an elbow.

0:27:13 > 0:27:15And he's building it from scratch.

0:27:15 > 0:27:18I've never done it before.

0:27:18 > 0:27:21Kind of like working it out at the moment.

0:27:21 > 0:27:23One, two...

0:27:24 > 0:27:27It's pretty much like when you know a new friend.

0:27:27 > 0:27:31You have to take your time to understand their personality,

0:27:31 > 0:27:34and this is what I'm going through with my new friend,

0:27:34 > 0:27:36a copper tube.

0:27:36 > 0:27:40- How are you handling copper piping? Are you getting on well?- We are...

0:27:40 > 0:27:46We just met, and we're having a bit of...on and off.

0:27:46 > 0:27:49- How are you finding the project, anyway, so far? - I find it really daunting.

0:27:49 > 0:27:52- The size of it.- What, because of the size of the room?

0:27:52 > 0:27:56Yeah, the bigger size that means you have to fill in more things.

0:27:56 > 0:27:58The issue you have is that you're a detail man.

0:27:58 > 0:28:00Yeah, detail freak!

0:28:04 > 0:28:06As well as their room schemes,

0:28:06 > 0:28:08the designers need to prove they can think on their feet.

0:28:09 > 0:28:12They have just 90 minutes to transform the junk

0:28:12 > 0:28:14they picked from the back of a van into something special.

0:28:14 > 0:28:17I'd like to make something that is unrecognisable

0:28:17 > 0:28:20as its original purpose - that's kind of what I do.

0:28:20 > 0:28:23Holly has grand plans for her denim, Perspex table,

0:28:23 > 0:28:25and metallic plant stand...

0:28:25 > 0:28:27So, what I'm going to make is I'm going to spray this,

0:28:27 > 0:28:31and then I'm going to use some denim to line the base,

0:28:31 > 0:28:34cut out five bits of plastic,

0:28:34 > 0:28:37which are going to go on the top of these, from the Perspex table,

0:28:37 > 0:28:40so it's going to be a coffee table, basically, but an unusual one.

0:28:40 > 0:28:43..while Frankie has equally unusual plans for his chair,

0:28:43 > 0:28:44framed embroidery, and table legs.

0:28:44 > 0:28:50I'm going to make a chair with a small invisible side table

0:28:50 > 0:28:52which is hidden underneath the chair.

0:28:52 > 0:28:55Will this just have some kind of MDF on top, not all...

0:28:55 > 0:28:57Let's just have an MDF top inside.

0:28:58 > 0:29:00Also at the designers' disposal -

0:29:00 > 0:29:03a craft box and the skills of their builders.

0:29:03 > 0:29:05- I've got some Perspex.- Yeah?

0:29:05 > 0:29:06- Can we cut that?- OK.

0:29:06 > 0:29:08- That would be great.- Yeah.

0:29:08 > 0:29:13While the table gets cut into disks, Holly spray-paints her plant stand.

0:29:13 > 0:29:15This will actually look quite sophisticated when it's done.

0:29:16 > 0:29:18But she's soon having a big rethink.

0:29:19 > 0:29:22I don't like the denim, so the denim's coming out.

0:29:23 > 0:29:25Instead, I'm going to do a gin bar.

0:29:29 > 0:29:31Any London home would need one of these.

0:29:31 > 0:29:35So, Holly, you took the plant stand and you're transforming it into...

0:29:35 > 0:29:37A gin bar.

0:29:37 > 0:29:39- LAUGHTER - Cool!

0:29:39 > 0:29:40Yeah, OK, you've won.

0:29:41 > 0:29:43Frankie hopes the best way to the judges' hearts

0:29:43 > 0:29:46is with his sewing skills.

0:29:46 > 0:29:48He's making a seat cushion from the embroidery,

0:29:48 > 0:29:49complete with a bit of piping.

0:29:49 > 0:29:53You know, to create something out of all this junk is possible,

0:29:53 > 0:29:56I just need to act really, really fast.

0:29:56 > 0:30:00Now, Frankie needs to assemble his chair and sliding tray.

0:30:02 > 0:30:05I'm trying to make something useful.

0:30:05 > 0:30:08When you have a cup of tea, sometimes, you know,

0:30:08 > 0:30:09"Where can I put my mug?"

0:30:09 > 0:30:13I think it's really interesting that Frankie is approaching this project

0:30:13 > 0:30:15in a way that he wants it to be useful,

0:30:15 > 0:30:17- as well as beautiful.- Mm-hm.

0:30:17 > 0:30:21It's a bit kind of cobbled together, but it does the job.

0:30:21 > 0:30:24Whereas, really, is Holly's going to be actually that useful?

0:30:24 > 0:30:26It's like a gin-making station.

0:30:26 > 0:30:29- She likes to paint things up. - She likes it to be fun, as well.

0:30:29 > 0:30:33- Yeah, she's really... - She's got a big sense of humour.

0:30:33 > 0:30:36Frankie's trying to add humour to his chair legs with patterned paper.

0:30:36 > 0:30:39I want something a little bit different, a bit funky,

0:30:39 > 0:30:42because the judges want me to go wild.

0:30:44 > 0:30:46Time is nearly up.

0:30:47 > 0:30:492½ minutes left.

0:30:49 > 0:30:51Oh, in that case...

0:30:51 > 0:30:53No, I can't do it.

0:30:56 > 0:30:58- HOLLY:- Cool, done.

0:30:58 > 0:31:00And I love it.

0:31:00 > 0:31:02How well they've transformed their junk will be important

0:31:02 > 0:31:05in determining who goes through to the quarterfinal.

0:31:05 > 0:31:08I'm actually really, really happy with that.

0:31:08 > 0:31:11I think Frankie's product is good, in terms of it's innovative

0:31:11 > 0:31:14and you've got the tray, but I'm not really sure how...

0:31:14 > 0:31:16fun it is.

0:31:16 > 0:31:20Once the paint, glue and heart rates have had a chance to settle,

0:31:20 > 0:31:24the judges will decide who has shown the most creativity.

0:31:26 > 0:31:30Something Robert Adam, the man who designed the castle, had in spades.

0:31:32 > 0:31:34Adam wasn't just an architect, he was an interior designer

0:31:34 > 0:31:36and an artist, as well.

0:31:36 > 0:31:38Most of his buildings were inspired by the ancient

0:31:38 > 0:31:40buildings of Rome, where he lived for a few years.

0:31:40 > 0:31:44But he also spent time painting romantic pictures of ruined

0:31:44 > 0:31:47Gothic castles in Scottish glens.

0:31:47 > 0:31:50And by the 1770s, when popular tastes had changed, he found

0:31:50 > 0:31:54a ready market for these romantic visions in architectural form.

0:31:57 > 0:32:00From this period on, there was no right or wrong in architecture.

0:32:00 > 0:32:02It was all a matter of taste.

0:32:02 > 0:32:06And then began the style wars that have raged ever since.

0:32:06 > 0:32:08One season, the rustic look was in. The next season, it was Gothic.

0:32:08 > 0:32:11The season after, it was Neoclassical.

0:32:15 > 0:32:18Now, our designers are engaged in their own style wars.

0:32:18 > 0:32:21It literally is exactly how I wanted it. It looks beautiful.

0:32:21 > 0:32:23A good team.

0:32:23 > 0:32:24Winning team.

0:32:24 > 0:32:25Winning team!

0:32:26 > 0:32:29Holly is proceeding full steam ahead,

0:32:29 > 0:32:33but Frankie's still painstakingly building his log holders.

0:32:33 > 0:32:34It's a very slow process.

0:32:35 > 0:32:37Have you not done those yet?

0:32:37 > 0:32:40- Uh-uh. I know! - LAUGHTER

0:32:40 > 0:32:42Don't push me.

0:32:42 > 0:32:43LAUGHTER

0:32:45 > 0:32:50But it's not just his speed that is causing concern to his team.

0:32:50 > 0:32:52I don't think you're going to have enough of this paper

0:32:52 > 0:32:55- to do the whole lot.- OK. Right. So...

0:32:55 > 0:32:56Erm...

0:32:59 > 0:33:02- Alternatively, you've still got some of the marble paper.- OK.

0:33:02 > 0:33:06If you'd like to do that wall with that, it's an idea.

0:33:06 > 0:33:07OK.

0:33:07 > 0:33:10Frankie has to compromise his design,

0:33:10 > 0:33:13replacing a whole wall of wood-effect paper for the marble style.

0:33:13 > 0:33:16Life is unpredictable, you know?

0:33:16 > 0:33:17We...

0:33:17 > 0:33:19We can't expect things always going our way.

0:33:23 > 0:33:26Both designers will be hoping there's nothing unexpected

0:33:26 > 0:33:29on the horizon, as they're about to face a visit from their clients

0:33:29 > 0:33:31around this halfway mark.

0:33:31 > 0:33:33They were really trusting.

0:33:33 > 0:33:37They really liked what I presented, so I'm confident.

0:33:37 > 0:33:40It's vital that no major changes are made to the schemes now,

0:33:40 > 0:33:44or the designers' place in the quarterfinal could be at risk.

0:33:44 > 0:33:48I'm feeling a little bit nervous, because he could just end up like,

0:33:48 > 0:33:49"Oh, I hate it".

0:33:50 > 0:33:52- Wow.- Hello.- Hi!

0:33:52 > 0:33:54- Hi, Holly.- It looks lovely.

0:33:54 > 0:33:56- So we've got some tiebacks. - Look at this.

0:33:56 > 0:33:57SHE GASPS

0:33:57 > 0:33:59Do you know what I'd love to see, if possible?

0:33:59 > 0:34:02- Yep.- Could... Could we see a bit of the mirror?

0:34:02 > 0:34:06The clients are worried the Perspex mirror could look cheap and tacky

0:34:06 > 0:34:08once the protective film is peeled back.

0:34:08 > 0:34:11- Oh, no, that's great. - Oh, look at that! That's... Wow!

0:34:11 > 0:34:13It's a perfect mirror. It doesn't have that distortion.

0:34:13 > 0:34:16- No. It's lovely. That's great. - So you're happy with that?

0:34:16 > 0:34:17- BOTH:- Yeah. - OK. It's good quality.

0:34:17 > 0:34:19- It's just like a normal mirror. - Yeah.- Thanks very much.

0:34:19 > 0:34:21- Thanks. See you soon.- Bye.- Bye.

0:34:21 > 0:34:23- KNOCKING ON DOOR - Come in.

0:34:23 > 0:34:25Frankie's client is about to get his first glimpse

0:34:25 > 0:34:28of how his steampunk brief translates to reality.

0:34:28 > 0:34:30- Hello!- Hi. - FRANKIE LAUGHS

0:34:30 > 0:34:32How are you? Wow.

0:34:32 > 0:34:36- Erm...- So, have I shocked you?

0:34:36 > 0:34:38So far, yeah. In a good way.

0:34:38 > 0:34:40In a good way? I like to hear that.

0:34:40 > 0:34:42FRANKIE LAUGHS

0:34:42 > 0:34:46- Yeah, so... - The bookshelves are really bright.

0:34:46 > 0:34:49- Yes, I think once the wallpaper has been put up...- OK.

0:34:49 > 0:34:50So it will be toned down.

0:34:53 > 0:34:56The paint's a bit brighter than I thought it was going to be,

0:34:56 > 0:34:58but he says it will work in the end,

0:34:58 > 0:35:00so I'm trusting him.

0:35:00 > 0:35:02The blue colour is, at the moment,

0:35:02 > 0:35:05yes, it is very much in your face.

0:35:05 > 0:35:09But I know, after the wallpaper and stuff, it looks right.

0:35:09 > 0:35:12So, Frankie, that was a tough brief to interpret.

0:35:12 > 0:35:14- You got steampunk... - Industrial.- Industrial.

0:35:14 > 0:35:17- Mid-century, retro. - All in one room!

0:35:17 > 0:35:18Wow. Tough.

0:35:18 > 0:35:23To put all these elements together, work really, really hard.

0:35:23 > 0:35:25Do you think you'll get through to the quarterfinals?

0:35:25 > 0:35:26- I say nothing. - LAUGHTER

0:35:26 > 0:35:28I can tell from your smile.

0:35:28 > 0:35:32It would be nice to go through, because...

0:35:32 > 0:35:36waiting for 14 years and, finally, this door's open to me

0:35:36 > 0:35:40and I'm scared that door's going to shut on me,

0:35:40 > 0:35:41so...

0:35:41 > 0:35:44Sorry, I'm being a bit emotional.

0:35:44 > 0:35:47- Erm...- It means that much to you? - Yeah, I... I...

0:35:47 > 0:35:50That's how much it means to me and I don't think I could explain more.

0:35:54 > 0:35:58Standing between him and the quarterfinal place is Holly.

0:35:58 > 0:36:01It's the first time that I've been so confident in a scheme

0:36:01 > 0:36:04that I really want to pull it off.

0:36:04 > 0:36:06Now she's getting dressed...

0:36:06 > 0:36:07to distress...

0:36:07 > 0:36:09SHE LAUGHS

0:36:09 > 0:36:11..her painted furniture.

0:36:11 > 0:36:13I'm going to focus on getting the edges through,

0:36:13 > 0:36:17cos that's where it would get worn, in reality.

0:36:17 > 0:36:20You don't want to start doing it like this, and then like this,

0:36:20 > 0:36:23you want to kind of just do it one way.

0:36:23 > 0:36:26Well, I'm just making that up, though, to be entirely honest.

0:36:26 > 0:36:28SHE GRUNTS

0:36:28 > 0:36:30- SHE SIGHS - I'm flagging.

0:36:30 > 0:36:31- FRANKIE GASPS - Ooh!

0:36:31 > 0:36:34- Yes, I've painted so much furniture.- French grey!

0:36:34 > 0:36:36Frankie's come to check out

0:36:36 > 0:36:39his rival's sophisticated Regency scheme.

0:36:39 > 0:36:42- This is where we're at, so far. - Oh, wow! Look at the wallpaper.

0:36:42 > 0:36:44- Do you like it?- I love it.- Yeah?

0:36:44 > 0:36:47The colours give me chills and it's so elegant.

0:36:47 > 0:36:48Thank you! That means so much.

0:36:49 > 0:36:51Nice that Frankie likes it.

0:36:51 > 0:36:53You know, he's always been praised for the sophistication

0:36:53 > 0:36:55and the elegance of his designs.

0:36:55 > 0:36:58The fact that he thinks that of this bodes well.

0:36:58 > 0:37:00Holly is not about to relax her efforts, though.

0:37:00 > 0:37:02As well as the elaborate decor, soft furnishings,

0:37:02 > 0:37:05painted furniture and mirrored panels...

0:37:05 > 0:37:06Ooh, lovely.

0:37:06 > 0:37:09..she wants to create a statement candelabra with mirrored offcuts.

0:37:09 > 0:37:11Thank you very much.

0:37:11 > 0:37:12- SOPHIE:- 'I mean, I have to say,'

0:37:12 > 0:37:14you're being industrious.

0:37:14 > 0:37:16Do you think you've been too ambitious?

0:37:16 > 0:37:18I think I have been ambitious.

0:37:18 > 0:37:20Whether or not I've been too ambitious,

0:37:20 > 0:37:21I won't be able to tell until tomorrow,

0:37:21 > 0:37:26but I really want to get this scheme to the level that I want.

0:37:26 > 0:37:28- Which is?- Perfect.- OK.

0:37:28 > 0:37:30So, if it means going back to my hotel and staying up

0:37:30 > 0:37:33till four in the morning, that is what I will do.

0:37:33 > 0:37:36The bones of that room are looking rather good.

0:37:36 > 0:37:38I like the colours she's chosen to go on the wall.

0:37:38 > 0:37:41But I think bringing in all these fussy wallpapers and fabrics

0:37:41 > 0:37:44and froufrou, I think it's going to look rather over-fussy.

0:37:46 > 0:37:50Showing restraint in a castle may seem counterintuitive,

0:37:50 > 0:37:51but then there's more to this building

0:37:51 > 0:37:54than just an intimidating facade.

0:37:54 > 0:37:56Step inside and it's like stepping inside

0:37:56 > 0:37:58a completely different building.

0:37:58 > 0:38:01And that's what this architecture was all about.

0:38:01 > 0:38:03It was about creating different stage sets

0:38:03 > 0:38:05that whisk you off into a different dimension.

0:38:05 > 0:38:07On the outside, it's all Gothic.

0:38:07 > 0:38:10Inside, it's all refined and Neoclassical,

0:38:10 > 0:38:11with these beautiful columns

0:38:11 > 0:38:15and this incredible elliptical staircase.

0:38:16 > 0:38:20Architect Robert Adam wanted to create a feast for the eyes

0:38:20 > 0:38:21right up to the ceiling.

0:38:22 > 0:38:25You wouldn't describe this pretty blue and pink

0:38:25 > 0:38:27at the top of the stairs as grotesque,

0:38:27 > 0:38:30but that's exactly the word that Adam used.

0:38:30 > 0:38:33The word was coined in the Renaissance, to describe

0:38:33 > 0:38:36the delicate wall paintings unearthed in ancient Roman ruins.

0:38:36 > 0:38:38Ruins that the Italians called "grotta".

0:38:38 > 0:38:41By the 18th century, though, the word had come to mean anything

0:38:41 > 0:38:44that was wildly over the top, fantastical, or just plain weird.

0:38:53 > 0:38:55It's nearly the end of day two.

0:38:56 > 0:39:00In Holly and Frankie's rooms, the decor is taking shape.

0:39:00 > 0:39:01Oh, my Lord.

0:39:01 > 0:39:04You are so clever!

0:39:04 > 0:39:07But both designers are pushing themselves further than ever before.

0:39:07 > 0:39:09I've got a lot to do.

0:39:09 > 0:39:12There's at least three things that I'm actually working on

0:39:12 > 0:39:17as we speak, so I'm going to be working into the night.

0:39:17 > 0:39:20The copper tubing's actually took me quite a long time.

0:39:21 > 0:39:23But I don't regret.

0:39:23 > 0:39:27I think, with determination tomorrow,

0:39:27 > 0:39:30I could finish them, hopefully.

0:39:30 > 0:39:31True to her word,

0:39:31 > 0:39:34Holly continues work on her candelabra back at the hotel.

0:39:34 > 0:39:37Don't get me wrong, I'd rather just go instantly to bed and sleep,

0:39:37 > 0:39:39but, erm...winning matters most.

0:39:39 > 0:39:40SHE LAUGHS

0:39:52 > 0:39:57It's the last day in this battle for a place in the quarterfinals.

0:39:57 > 0:39:59Frankie and Holly have just got a few hours to go

0:39:59 > 0:40:03to complete their schemes before the judges decide their fate.

0:40:03 > 0:40:05Yeah, under pressure.

0:40:05 > 0:40:07I've got a lot to get done this morning.

0:40:07 > 0:40:09I need to sand the table, wax the table,

0:40:09 > 0:40:12do all the dressing...yeah.

0:40:12 > 0:40:14I'm really throwing everything that I've got at it.

0:40:14 > 0:40:16The judges expect nothing less.

0:40:16 > 0:40:19When time's up, they will scrutinise the rooms for creativity,

0:40:19 > 0:40:22quality of finish, and how well the brief was met.

0:40:22 > 0:40:25Those are the bits I made last night.

0:40:25 > 0:40:29Yeah, last day, um...bit panicking.

0:40:29 > 0:40:33Because knowing myself, bit of a detail freak.

0:40:33 > 0:40:35Things might not get done.

0:40:35 > 0:40:37Especially since Frankie's still focused on

0:40:37 > 0:40:39the most intricate part of his scheme -

0:40:39 > 0:40:42creating a steampunk detail with mini cogs he bought online

0:40:42 > 0:40:44for just a few pounds.

0:40:44 > 0:40:48Steampunk is more about the mechanism,

0:40:48 > 0:40:51the cogs and the clock bits,

0:40:51 > 0:40:55so I need to add something to tie all the concept together.

0:41:02 > 0:41:06Holly's late-night project, the candelabra, is being fitted.

0:41:06 > 0:41:09- How's this looking, Holly? - It looks great. Thank you.

0:41:09 > 0:41:13And she's doing some last-minute decoupage on her side tables

0:41:13 > 0:41:15by gluing on pictures and varnishing.

0:41:15 > 0:41:19I was meant to have napkins which had a kind of olive design on them.

0:41:19 > 0:41:20They haven't arrived,

0:41:20 > 0:41:24so I've used some brochures that were in the hotel lobby.

0:41:24 > 0:41:26These are all different Scottish castles

0:41:26 > 0:41:28and these are all different Scottish animals.

0:41:28 > 0:41:31It's all about being resourceful and not spending any money.

0:41:31 > 0:41:33With such a daunting to-do list,

0:41:33 > 0:41:36Holly can't afford to slow down for even a minute.

0:41:36 > 0:41:38Breathe, breathe, breathe, breathe, breathe.

0:41:38 > 0:41:39Breathe!

0:41:39 > 0:41:41Slowly, the madness is kicking in.

0:41:43 > 0:41:45Oh, my God, this is so tiring.

0:41:45 > 0:41:48It's quiet and peaceful out here, but it's pretty frantic in there.

0:41:48 > 0:41:51But I have to say, she's very, very organised.

0:41:51 > 0:41:54I noticed that she had snuck in some animals.

0:41:54 > 0:41:57- True to form!- Yeah. Decoupage this time, on those tables.

0:41:57 > 0:42:00- What do you think about that, Dan? - HE LAUGHS

0:42:00 > 0:42:03Well, they're sort of appropriate for here, I know,

0:42:03 > 0:42:05- but there's a level of desperation there.- I think so, too.

0:42:07 > 0:42:10Frankie's feeling far from desperate,

0:42:10 > 0:42:13now the huge task of wallpapering is nearly done...

0:42:13 > 0:42:16- How could I live without you? - No, well, there you go!

0:42:16 > 0:42:18..and so, finally, are his copper log-holders.

0:42:18 > 0:42:21I think they look quite good.

0:42:21 > 0:42:24He's used leftover cogs on his skull lights,

0:42:24 > 0:42:27gluing them to the acrylic sheet to form eyes and a mouth

0:42:27 > 0:42:30before the LED lighting strips are fitted.

0:42:30 > 0:42:31Ready?

0:42:34 > 0:42:36FRANKIE LAUGHS

0:42:36 > 0:42:38So is Frankie going a bit wild?

0:42:38 > 0:42:42We are seeing Frankie being a lot more creative.

0:42:42 > 0:42:45I have to say, I've never seen anything like it.

0:42:45 > 0:42:46Lovely.

0:42:46 > 0:42:49Hang on, here! I mean, creative... He's a box-ticker.

0:42:49 > 0:42:52He reads the brief and tries to see if he's answered everything.

0:42:52 > 0:42:55And if he does that, he'll run into danger of this room

0:42:55 > 0:42:57looking a little bit of a mishmash, frankly.

0:42:57 > 0:43:00But Frankie won't be able to tick every box,

0:43:00 > 0:43:03because at the eleventh hour, he's got his sums wrong. Again.

0:43:03 > 0:43:07My budget is over, roughly about £73.

0:43:07 > 0:43:10And I had to take off...

0:43:11 > 0:43:13..some of my design.

0:43:13 > 0:43:17Working to a £1,000 budget is tough in such a big room,

0:43:17 > 0:43:19and it's the lighting that will suffer.

0:43:19 > 0:43:23The floor lamp is out, the Edison light is out.

0:43:23 > 0:43:25Feeling a bit down, really.

0:43:25 > 0:43:29It won't actually achieve the look I expected.

0:43:30 > 0:43:32Holly's also feeling tense,

0:43:32 > 0:43:34having second thoughts about one of her creations.

0:43:34 > 0:43:38That doesn't really go with the rest. I think it looks too tacky.

0:43:38 > 0:43:41What I'd like to do is re-hang the original chandelier.

0:43:43 > 0:43:46I think the judges will say it's a bit of a fail.

0:43:47 > 0:43:50The designers' three-day challenge is nearly at an end.

0:43:50 > 0:43:53On the first day, Frankie got off to a good start

0:43:53 > 0:43:55by beating Holly with his presentation skills.

0:43:55 > 0:43:56That's better, isn't it?

0:43:56 > 0:43:59Now the judges must decide who performed best

0:43:59 > 0:44:02when it came to designing a quality product from a load of old junk

0:44:02 > 0:44:04in just 90 minutes.

0:44:04 > 0:44:07You can never guess what the judges are going to say,

0:44:07 > 0:44:09so we'll wait and see.

0:44:09 > 0:44:12It's a chance for Holly to make up lost ground.

0:44:12 > 0:44:14So, judges, what have we got here?

0:44:14 > 0:44:17Well, I think this is what's called a gin palace.

0:44:17 > 0:44:19I think it's a bit of a giggle. Holly wanted to have fun,

0:44:19 > 0:44:21and I commend her for that.

0:44:21 > 0:44:23But, actually, I think it's quite ugly.

0:44:23 > 0:44:25But that's her strength - she's a good product designer!

0:44:25 > 0:44:26She's very crafty,

0:44:26 > 0:44:29but I am a bit disappointed with the execution.

0:44:29 > 0:44:32We've got really messy silicone sealant everywhere.

0:44:32 > 0:44:35Part of the challenge is, you've got 90 minutes

0:44:35 > 0:44:37and you have to time what you can do to a high standard.

0:44:37 > 0:44:39Good point. Because here,

0:44:39 > 0:44:42Frankie has made something that has a level of quality to it.

0:44:42 > 0:44:44It's got a little sliding tray on the side of it

0:44:44 > 0:44:46- to put your cup of coffee on.- Yeah!

0:44:46 > 0:44:48The only disappointment is, it's still a chair.

0:44:48 > 0:44:50- Well, it's a chair-cum-table. - That's true.

0:44:50 > 0:44:53He's picked some really nice fabrics, as well, I think, to go with

0:44:53 > 0:44:56the velvet, and the needlepoint makes it feel quite luxurious.

0:44:56 > 0:44:58I think you're very pro that one.

0:44:58 > 0:45:01Because I think it's something I'd actually use, whereas...

0:45:01 > 0:45:04Oh, I don't know, I could use this quite nicely!

0:45:04 > 0:45:06Crack it open, crack it open!

0:45:07 > 0:45:10'The judges must come to a unanimous decision.'

0:45:10 > 0:45:13You both seem to have favourites. Have you decided who's the winner?

0:45:13 > 0:45:16Actually, I mean, I'm having fun with this one and I rather like it,

0:45:16 > 0:45:19- but I think Frankie's is better. - Yeah, I'd go with this.

0:45:19 > 0:45:21I think this is a much better piece of product design.

0:45:21 > 0:45:24Very, very pleased with the result.

0:45:24 > 0:45:27I'm speechless. Absolutely speechless.

0:45:28 > 0:45:31It would be nice to win SOMETHING.

0:45:31 > 0:45:33Holly could still overtake Frankie...

0:45:33 > 0:45:37if she gets her room scheme absolutely perfect.

0:45:38 > 0:45:41Left. Hang on...a bit left.

0:45:41 > 0:45:43For Frankie, time is almost up.

0:45:43 > 0:45:45That's a good position, yeah.

0:45:46 > 0:45:49He had a disaster miscalculating his £1,000 budget.

0:45:51 > 0:45:53Now, he must make up for the lack of lighting

0:45:53 > 0:45:56by proving he's unleashed his wild side.

0:45:56 > 0:45:58- Oh, no!- But when the tiny cogs

0:45:58 > 0:46:01fall off his skull lights at the very last minute...

0:46:01 > 0:46:04Seems damaged quite badly.

0:46:04 > 0:46:07..Frankie's attention to detail means he can't let it go.

0:46:07 > 0:46:09Come on!

0:46:13 > 0:46:16Come on!

0:46:18 > 0:46:20Don't drop. Don't drop.

0:46:20 > 0:46:22HE SIGHS

0:46:22 > 0:46:24Done and dusted. Um...

0:46:27 > 0:46:28Oh, we're bang on time.

0:46:30 > 0:46:32Mad rush in the end.

0:46:32 > 0:46:37Now I look at my hands, there's lots of blisters and cuts.

0:46:37 > 0:46:41But if that is the price I have to pay,

0:46:41 > 0:46:45then I think it's worth it.

0:46:45 > 0:46:48His client's eclectic brief included steampunk,

0:46:48 > 0:46:51Victoriana, and mid-century retro.

0:46:53 > 0:46:55Three days ago, the room was cavernous and bare.

0:47:00 > 0:47:05Now, Frankie's transformed it with a mix of Victorian-style wood panel

0:47:05 > 0:47:06and marble-effect wallpapers,

0:47:06 > 0:47:09and an oversized bookcase.

0:47:10 > 0:47:13He's created steampunk-inspired copper-pipe log-holders,

0:47:13 > 0:47:16and studded leatherette shelves.

0:47:16 > 0:47:19An antler wall display delivers Victoriana,

0:47:19 > 0:47:22while skull mood lighting adds some edge.

0:47:23 > 0:47:26He's also added mid-century blue accents

0:47:26 > 0:47:29and retro-style geometric cushions.

0:47:29 > 0:47:33The entire scheme, I'm actually quite pleased with it.

0:47:33 > 0:47:36The judges are possibly going to look at the lighting...

0:47:36 > 0:47:41Unfortunately, yeah, that's the one thing I didn't fulfil.

0:47:45 > 0:47:46You've got a big smile on your face.

0:47:46 > 0:47:48Yeah! It's really dramatic, isn't it?

0:47:48 > 0:47:51We've got quite a complicated decorating scheme here, haven't we?

0:47:51 > 0:47:54We've got wood wall panelling, marbling,

0:47:54 > 0:47:57really striking electric-blue paintwork.

0:47:57 > 0:48:00You know, the rivets and the piping...

0:48:00 > 0:48:03Can you see? He's got little cogs and things, as well.

0:48:03 > 0:48:05Yeah. Very steampunk.

0:48:05 > 0:48:08We've been wanting him to show us a new level of creativity,

0:48:08 > 0:48:10and I think we're getting it.

0:48:10 > 0:48:11I was quite interested to see

0:48:11 > 0:48:14how the geometrics worked with the Victoriana,

0:48:14 > 0:48:17and they definitely make this theme look more modern and contemporary.

0:48:17 > 0:48:19He's not gone overboard and silly with it,

0:48:19 > 0:48:21and that was my big fear with this room,

0:48:21 > 0:48:23that it would just look a bit trashy.

0:48:23 > 0:48:25But it's not, it's looking classy.

0:48:25 > 0:48:27- Not too over the top.- Can I just say something, though?

0:48:27 > 0:48:30There's something killing me in this room.

0:48:30 > 0:48:32- What's that?- It really is. Look at that bulb!

0:48:32 > 0:48:34- SHE LAUGHS - Oh, it's so wrong.

0:48:34 > 0:48:37And the key thing in this room was all about the lighting.

0:48:37 > 0:48:41- We're not getting it.- I'm seeing it with those wonderful installations

0:48:41 > 0:48:45on either side, with the skulls, which are absolutely beautiful.

0:48:45 > 0:48:47But looking in the rest of the room,

0:48:47 > 0:48:50we've got one little work light here...and that's it.

0:48:50 > 0:48:54Well, I know that he had plans to put another light in here -

0:48:54 > 0:48:56- ran out of budget. - No, not good enough.

0:48:56 > 0:48:58It's going to be a nightmare in the evening.

0:49:00 > 0:49:04My homeowner wasn't sure about blue.

0:49:04 > 0:49:06I just hope he will enjoy it.

0:49:06 > 0:49:08Come on through.

0:49:08 > 0:49:11'The clients' reactions to the finished room

0:49:11 > 0:49:13- 'will also inform the judges' final decision.'- Wow.

0:49:13 > 0:49:16- Well, you wanted a statement room. - Yeah!

0:49:16 > 0:49:18- That's what you got!- Wow!

0:49:18 > 0:49:21I was a bit worried that the blue wasn't going to work, but it's OK.

0:49:21 > 0:49:24- And the skulls?- Yeah, they're cool.

0:49:24 > 0:49:26They don't add much light to the room.

0:49:26 > 0:49:29I was going to ask you that. He hasn't brought much new lighting,

0:49:29 > 0:49:33- and come winter, dark, deep winter...- It might be dark.

0:49:33 > 0:49:35I'm sure it'll just be atmospheric.

0:49:35 > 0:49:39But it is a very big room, so I think he's done well.

0:49:41 > 0:49:43Holly's time is almost up,

0:49:43 > 0:49:45and there's still a lot of dressing to do.

0:49:45 > 0:49:49Four in there, please. Stone, picture, stone, picture.

0:49:49 > 0:49:52She's been constantly questioned over her ability to answer a brief

0:49:52 > 0:49:55and deliver a high level of sophistication.

0:49:55 > 0:49:57There's rubbish here I need got rid of.

0:49:57 > 0:49:59There's screws, bits of metal - this needs to go.

0:49:59 > 0:50:02Determined to finish every detail,

0:50:02 > 0:50:04Holly's sewing a voile for the window.

0:50:08 > 0:50:10Come on, come on, come on.

0:50:10 > 0:50:13- Little tiny bit lower. - Like this?- Yep. Stop.

0:50:15 > 0:50:18Can her finished look secure her a place in the quarterfinal?

0:50:21 > 0:50:22Done.

0:50:25 > 0:50:30I'm really tired, and I've really pushed myself on this one.

0:50:30 > 0:50:32There's nothing else I could have done.

0:50:32 > 0:50:34I couldn't have done it better than that.

0:50:34 > 0:50:38Holly's brief was for a restrained and elegant Regency scheme.

0:50:39 > 0:50:41Before she started, the room was

0:50:41 > 0:50:44a cluttered mismatch of colours and styles.

0:50:48 > 0:50:49Now, it's been unified,

0:50:49 > 0:50:52with a muted duck-egg blue and sage colour scheme.

0:50:54 > 0:50:58She's painted the furniture, including a new dining table.

0:50:58 > 0:51:01And she's reupholstered the chairs, coffee table and window seat

0:51:01 > 0:51:03in matching fabric.

0:51:04 > 0:51:07She's decoupaged two new side tables.

0:51:08 > 0:51:12And Holly's gone for glamour, with mirrored wall panels,

0:51:12 > 0:51:16a variety of scatter cushions, and a draped voile at the window.

0:51:16 > 0:51:20The thing I'm most pleased with is, it looks beautiful and elegant,

0:51:20 > 0:51:23but it doesn't look too stately.

0:51:23 > 0:51:27I have nailed the brief, absolutely nailed the brief.

0:51:32 > 0:51:34That's elegant, isn't it?

0:51:34 > 0:51:35It's a different room.

0:51:35 > 0:51:37So, what do you think of the mirrors?

0:51:37 > 0:51:40Do you think these mirrors, now you see them in here, are too disco?

0:51:40 > 0:51:42There are a lot of mirrors in the room.

0:51:42 > 0:51:45I think we could have done with maybe those removed.

0:51:45 > 0:51:48Yeah, they're potentially a little bit glossy and glitzy.

0:51:48 > 0:51:51But the idea to have them in the ceiling there...

0:51:51 > 0:51:53Oh, it's brilliant, isn't it? I think that looks great.

0:51:53 > 0:51:55It's reflecting the green into the room,

0:51:55 > 0:51:58which you really want, cos it's so special outside.

0:51:58 > 0:52:00I also like the panels.

0:52:00 > 0:52:04She's put a sort of Regency-style wallpaper with little stars on it

0:52:04 > 0:52:06in each of the panels, and it really does look smart.

0:52:06 > 0:52:10I was concerned that this room would feel a little bit overly decorative,

0:52:10 > 0:52:14and a little bit froufrou, but it does all hang together.

0:52:14 > 0:52:16She thinks about absolutely everything,

0:52:16 > 0:52:18including setting the table!

0:52:18 > 0:52:20Yeah, this is a nice setting, isn't it?

0:52:20 > 0:52:22We've got slate and pewter and cut glass.

0:52:22 > 0:52:24She's painted all the furniture.

0:52:24 > 0:52:28Looking closely at these chairs, I have to ask myself why

0:52:28 > 0:52:31she's rubbed them down to look so rough and rustic.

0:52:31 > 0:52:33That's not the look we're going for here.

0:52:33 > 0:52:35We want sophisticated, elegant -

0:52:35 > 0:52:37we're going for a bit of Regency glamour, even!

0:52:37 > 0:52:39Yeah, not Regency rustic.

0:52:39 > 0:52:43Holly had to prove to us this time that she could follow a brief.

0:52:43 > 0:52:45There is a slight dated feel in here,

0:52:45 > 0:52:48I think with some of her fabric choices -

0:52:48 > 0:52:50the amount of swags and cushions and tassels,

0:52:50 > 0:52:54I think, make this room feel not quite as contemporary as it should.

0:52:54 > 0:52:56But, overall, it looks great.

0:52:56 > 0:52:59There is an air of sophistication. I think she got it just about right.

0:53:02 > 0:53:04I think the homeowners will like it.

0:53:04 > 0:53:07I think I've given them what... I think they'll love it,

0:53:07 > 0:53:09so I'm really proud of that.

0:53:12 > 0:53:13Oh!

0:53:13 > 0:53:15Goodness me.

0:53:15 > 0:53:17That is just absolutely beautiful.

0:53:19 > 0:53:21God. That's lovely.

0:53:21 > 0:53:25It's a completely different room. It's just beautiful.

0:53:25 > 0:53:28- It's absolutely beautiful. - You wanted sophistication.

0:53:28 > 0:53:30Yeah, I think we have that, with knobs on!

0:53:30 > 0:53:35Holly has taken a pretty woolly, vague brief,

0:53:35 > 0:53:37and, actually, she's almost read our minds.

0:53:37 > 0:53:40And I think she's done a remarkable job.

0:53:43 > 0:53:47With both rooms scrutinised, the two designers can do no more.

0:53:50 > 0:53:53- HOLLY:- I'd love to get through to the quarterfinals, absolutely.

0:53:53 > 0:53:56But I don't... I'm not counting on it.

0:53:56 > 0:54:01- FRANKIE:- To get one more chance is...

0:54:01 > 0:54:05Gosh, that is something... That's like a treasure.

0:54:05 > 0:54:07A chance don't come easily.

0:54:07 > 0:54:10I somehow feel like if I don't go through this round,

0:54:10 > 0:54:12I feel very sorry.

0:54:12 > 0:54:15This is one impressive setting.

0:54:15 > 0:54:18I mean, it could intimidate lesser designers.

0:54:18 > 0:54:19Yeah, I mean, I agree with you.

0:54:19 > 0:54:23Frankie's room in particular is really big.

0:54:23 > 0:54:27And he had quite a brief, as well, didn't he? Did he pull it off?

0:54:27 > 0:54:28Oh, I think he did.

0:54:28 > 0:54:31He filled the room with this wonderful wallpaper,

0:54:31 > 0:54:35all held together with this very strong cobalt blue.

0:54:35 > 0:54:37Did you see the creativity that you wanted from him?

0:54:37 > 0:54:39He's really shown me that in this project.

0:54:39 > 0:54:41We've got some great product design.

0:54:41 > 0:54:45Those skull pictures are just magical.

0:54:45 > 0:54:47You were impressed with his product design

0:57:17 > 0:57:19Although her design was really lovely,

0:57:19 > 0:57:23it was just a little bit too shiny, a little bit too glamorous.

0:57:23 > 0:57:25Should have pared it down a little bit more.

0:57:25 > 0:57:27'It's certainly not the end of my interior designing,
