0:00:02 > 0:00:05I'm constantly taken aback by the huge variety of property styles in Britain -

0:00:05 > 0:00:09from characterful timber-framed cottages to grand townhouses.

0:00:10 > 0:00:15But sometimes, the insides don't live up to the expectations on the outside.

0:00:15 > 0:00:19So we've gathered together the most talented amateur interior designers

0:00:19 > 0:00:22who think they could be the next big thing to show us how it's done.

0:00:22 > 0:00:24But it's not as easy as it looks.

0:00:24 > 0:00:27- Wahey!- Crikey!- I'm a bit stressed!

0:00:27 > 0:00:29Across three knockout episodes,

0:00:29 > 0:00:33a group of designers will compete for one place in finals week.

0:00:33 > 0:00:35I'm feeling a bit like - argh!

0:00:35 > 0:00:37Who built this?

0:00:37 > 0:00:38I love it!

0:00:39 > 0:00:42Judging them, two industry experts.

0:00:42 > 0:00:43Daniel Hopwood...

0:00:43 > 0:00:46What I'm looking for is talent that can be nurtured.

0:00:46 > 0:00:48..and Sophie Robinson.

0:00:48 > 0:00:50I want the designers to impress me with their creativity.

0:00:50 > 0:00:54They'll be scrutinising presentation skills...

0:00:54 > 0:00:56That's not the way to present to somebody.

0:00:56 > 0:00:58..artistic flair...

0:00:58 > 0:01:01- Have you ever seen that done before? - No. It's weird.

0:01:01 > 0:01:03..and how well they deliver their brief.

0:01:03 > 0:01:05Pretty amazing transformation.

0:01:05 > 0:01:07Absolutely beautiful.

0:01:07 > 0:01:10In the finals, the best will face giants of the design world.

0:01:10 > 0:01:12Oliver Heath...

0:01:12 > 0:01:13Oh, my word!

0:01:13 > 0:01:14..Orla Kiely...

0:01:14 > 0:01:16It does look quite rough.

0:01:16 > 0:01:17..and Kelly Hoppen.

0:01:17 > 0:01:19I want perfection.

0:01:19 > 0:01:21But only one can be crowned winner

0:01:21 > 0:01:24of the Great Interior Design Challenge.

0:01:32 > 0:01:34In this first-round heat,

0:01:34 > 0:01:40four rooms in four period properties crying out for some fresh ideas.

0:01:40 > 0:01:42Our amateurs will be updating a bedroom each

0:01:42 > 0:01:46in the unusual thatched village of Briantspuddle in Dorset.

0:01:46 > 0:01:48Each designer has their own distinctive style.

0:01:48 > 0:01:52- Kind of mishmash.- Mad Hatter. - Clutter.- Modern.

0:01:52 > 0:01:56But working to a client's brief won't be straightforward.

0:01:56 > 0:01:59I'm a bit worried now, because of the wallpaper situation.

0:01:59 > 0:02:02It's a bit make-or-break in the room, really.

0:02:02 > 0:02:05They'll need to impress to keep their place in the competition.

0:02:05 > 0:02:07Ta-dah!

0:02:07 > 0:02:08That's really not good enough.

0:02:08 > 0:02:11It's not going to look bodged, is it?

0:02:11 > 0:02:12Of the four amateur designers,

0:02:12 > 0:02:16only three will make it through to the next round.

0:02:16 > 0:02:19The designer going home this time...

0:02:20 > 0:02:22..is...

0:02:24 > 0:02:27Our rivals will be competing in Briantspuddle,

0:02:27 > 0:02:29a typical chocolate-box English village,

0:02:29 > 0:02:32but despite the olde worlde thatched roofs,

0:02:32 > 0:02:35most of the houses are less than 100 years old.

0:02:35 > 0:02:37Throughout the Victorian and Edwardian periods,

0:02:37 > 0:02:42it was common for wealthy industrialists to build model communities for their workers.

0:02:42 > 0:02:45In Dorset, though, one visionary built a rural version.

0:02:46 > 0:02:48A series of farms were set up

0:02:48 > 0:02:51employing Arts and Crafts architecture

0:02:51 > 0:02:53and modern agricultural techniques.

0:02:53 > 0:02:56Now these 20th-century workers' cottages are privately owned

0:02:56 > 0:03:00and our designers have the task of updating a bedroom each

0:03:00 > 0:03:02for their first-ever clients.

0:03:10 > 0:03:11It'll come down here, won't it?

0:03:11 > 0:03:13That's fine there.

0:03:13 > 0:03:17The designers have been working on a brief from their homeowner for the past week.

0:03:17 > 0:03:21Just feeling a bit nervous about the amount of work but other than that,

0:03:21 > 0:03:24I'm pretty happy with the stuff I've designed.

0:03:24 > 0:03:26Just really a couple of accent colours,

0:03:26 > 0:03:27mainly the red and the yellow.

0:03:27 > 0:03:30Quite a challenging brief but I'm going to wow 'em!

0:03:30 > 0:03:32That's what I'm here for, to wow 'em!

0:03:32 > 0:03:33They've got a small team to help them,

0:03:33 > 0:03:36including a builder and a decorator.

0:03:36 > 0:03:39I'm thinking about wallpapering this wall and this wall.

0:03:39 > 0:03:41- Yeah, yeah, that'll be fine. - There's a lot to do.

0:03:41 > 0:03:45Um, I'm just hoping that I can, er, plan my time wisely.

0:03:45 > 0:03:48They also have a budget of £1,000 and three days.

0:03:48 > 0:03:51So we could always make some shelves and then paint them.

0:03:51 > 0:03:54- OK, so we'll go through the drawings and um, let's get started.- OK.

0:03:54 > 0:03:58It's a nice brief and they seem like nice people and I...

0:03:58 > 0:04:00I really hope I've got it right!

0:04:04 > 0:04:08We'll take down that border and put a picture rail up.

0:04:08 > 0:04:13First up is 42-year-old ex-visual merchandiser and mum of one, Sarah,

0:04:13 > 0:04:14who lives in London.

0:04:14 > 0:04:18I'm far too sentimental about inanimate objects

0:04:18 > 0:04:23and I like to be surrounded by what a lot of people would call clutter.

0:04:24 > 0:04:27The master bedroom Sarah's working in certainly wasn't cluttered -

0:04:27 > 0:04:29although it was a little old-fashioned.

0:04:29 > 0:04:32The judges checked out its potential before work started.

0:04:32 > 0:04:36- Hmm! Interesting.- Oh, I'm always worried when you say "interesting"!

0:04:36 > 0:04:37Ha-ha!

0:04:37 > 0:04:40This is all just a bit ironed-out at the moment, isn't it?

0:04:40 > 0:04:41It's a great room to work on, though.

0:04:41 > 0:04:43We've got lovely lead windows,

0:04:43 > 0:04:45we've got even got a little bit of a beam going on there.

0:04:45 > 0:04:48Sarah's homeowners have asked for a relaxing,

0:04:48 > 0:04:50country-style master bedroom.

0:04:50 > 0:04:54There is potential character in this room. It just needs...

0:04:54 > 0:04:56Well, that's the key word. Potential.

0:04:56 > 0:04:59I think there is a real opportunity to inject something new

0:04:59 > 0:05:00and exciting to this...

0:05:00 > 0:05:03- Yeah, new take on the country living.- Yeah.

0:05:03 > 0:05:06To maximise that potential, Sarah's planning a bold blue headboard

0:05:06 > 0:05:10and Ottoman and a bright yellow floral wallpaper,

0:05:10 > 0:05:14which she put to her homeowner Una to sign off before work began.

0:05:14 > 0:05:20- Here is my design for your English countryside bedroom scheme.- Yeah.

0:05:20 > 0:05:24As well as approval from her client, Sarah must impress the judges, too,

0:05:24 > 0:05:26as they will be ranking all the designers

0:05:26 > 0:05:28on their presentation skills.

0:05:28 > 0:05:32- You talked about something that was nice and warm and relaxing.- Yeah.

0:05:32 > 0:05:35- So I've chosen this wallpaper. - Mm-hm.

0:05:35 > 0:05:40- So that will go all the way round. - All the way round?- Yes.

0:05:40 > 0:05:43I think it will just make the room look much more beautiful

0:05:43 > 0:05:44if it goes all the way round.

0:05:44 > 0:05:48My instinct would be to have at least one area of the wall

0:05:48 > 0:05:53- a plain colour. Am I being picky? - No, not at all. Er...

0:05:53 > 0:05:56But I think that we should start,

0:05:56 > 0:05:58and I think I'm going to work on convincing you.

0:05:58 > 0:06:00I thought we'd paint just a very...the palest,

0:06:00 > 0:06:02palest kind of pink

0:06:02 > 0:06:04and then do the woodwork slightly darker.

0:06:04 > 0:06:05That's a different one, is that.

0:06:05 > 0:06:09- Yeah. It's just to give it a little bit of extra warmth.- Yes.

0:06:09 > 0:06:12- Let's see how it works out. - Yes, exactly.- It's different. It's different.

0:06:12 > 0:06:14But then that's a good thing - something a bit different

0:06:14 > 0:06:16- but is actually what you want.- Yeah.

0:06:16 > 0:06:19When it's finished, you'll think, "That's exactly what I wanted!"

0:06:19 > 0:06:21- Yes, hopefully.- Hopefully!

0:06:21 > 0:06:23'It's granny chic and I love it!'

0:06:23 > 0:06:26- I just don't think the homeowner's quite ready for that now.- Mm.

0:06:26 > 0:06:30She's definitely taking a gamble with that scheme.

0:06:30 > 0:06:33With work underway in the room, Sarah's homeowner is still worried.

0:06:33 > 0:06:37I have got reservations about the patterned wallpaper

0:06:37 > 0:06:42on ALL the walls. I think it might be a bit too much.

0:06:42 > 0:06:45As long as I keep her involved, I think she'll be fine.

0:06:45 > 0:06:49I know it's the right thing to do in the room.

0:06:49 > 0:06:51The wallpaper isn't Sarah's only worry, though.

0:06:51 > 0:06:55This wall isn't quite as long as I thought it was.

0:06:55 > 0:06:59The headboard she's designed will be too big for the space.

0:06:59 > 0:07:03Rookie error! I misread the measurements I was given.

0:07:03 > 0:07:06Fingers crossed, we can make it work and squeeze it all in.

0:07:06 > 0:07:07We can break a little bit off the end.

0:07:07 > 0:07:09- WHISPERS:- I think we'll be fine.

0:07:09 > 0:07:12- We'll make it look like we planned it all along.- Yeah.

0:07:15 > 0:07:18That's done. That's done. That's happening tomorrow.

0:07:18 > 0:07:21The second designer is 31-year-old Rob -

0:07:21 > 0:07:24a drummer-come-engineering manager from Hull.

0:07:24 > 0:07:26My style is bonkers.

0:07:26 > 0:07:28It's just oddball.

0:07:28 > 0:07:32The room Rob is updating was a small and dull eaves bedroom.

0:07:32 > 0:07:36This is actually quite a dark room with quite a small dormer window.

0:07:36 > 0:07:38Not a lot of natural light in here.

0:07:38 > 0:07:41Rob's homeowners have given a brief for a bohemian room

0:07:41 > 0:07:43with global accents.

0:07:43 > 0:07:46The homeowners want to show the things that they've picked up

0:07:46 > 0:07:47on their travels.

0:07:47 > 0:07:49The problem is, some of these are very brightly coloured,

0:07:49 > 0:07:51like this batik.

0:07:51 > 0:07:56And in dark rooms, those bright colours are very hard to make work.

0:07:56 > 0:07:58But I think there's another danger zone here, too,

0:07:58 > 0:08:01and that is that this look gets a bit theme-y.

0:08:01 > 0:08:04Don't want it to look like a stall from Camden Market.

0:08:04 > 0:08:08Steering clear of Camden, Rob plans to fulfil the bohemian brief

0:08:08 > 0:08:11by repurposing old items into statement pieces.

0:08:11 > 0:08:12Before work started,

0:08:12 > 0:08:16he had to get sign-off from homeowners Margaret and Ian.

0:08:16 > 0:08:17They'd asked to keep the walls white,

0:08:17 > 0:08:20so Rob planned colourful accessories.

0:08:20 > 0:08:24- Don't think that's too many colours competing there?- Um...

0:08:24 > 0:08:26I don't think there will be.

0:08:26 > 0:08:29What I'm going to do is just pick up on a couple of accent colours

0:08:29 > 0:08:31which, really, is these three up here -

0:08:31 > 0:08:33the blue, more so it's going to be the red and gold,

0:08:33 > 0:08:37- which I know is something you really wanted to bring into your theme.- OK.

0:08:37 > 0:08:40Rob also wants to transform their existing chest of drawers.

0:08:40 > 0:08:43I plan to do it similar to the picture here

0:08:43 > 0:08:46but actually clad it using some reclaimed wood

0:08:46 > 0:08:49to try and give you a bit of my character in there as well

0:08:49 > 0:08:50cos I like to make a lot of things like that.

0:08:50 > 0:08:53And then, finally, I'm going to make for both of you

0:08:53 > 0:08:56- your own bedside table and your own bedside light.- Oh, lovely.

0:08:56 > 0:08:59- And also change the main light that you've got.- Brilliant. Excellent.

0:08:59 > 0:09:00Brilliant.

0:09:00 > 0:09:04And that is what I've got planned for you if you're OK with that

0:09:04 > 0:09:07- and you're happy to let me run loose with it.- It sounds mad and fun.

0:09:07 > 0:09:09He's trying to inject the personality

0:09:09 > 0:09:11and the design elements in the accessories, and actually,

0:09:11 > 0:09:14he's really hands-on and coming up with some lovely product design.

0:09:14 > 0:09:17But it just feels really cold - all those hot,

0:09:17 > 0:09:20bouncy colours lost in a sea of white.

0:09:22 > 0:09:26And with work well underway, Rob's getting the power tools out.

0:09:27 > 0:09:30I always like to be as hands-on as I can, really.

0:09:30 > 0:09:33And his hands start on a bedside light.

0:09:33 > 0:09:37I just need to use one of my favourite tools - my angle grinder.

0:09:44 > 0:09:46I've got a feeling my bedspread that I've ordered

0:09:46 > 0:09:48is going to have to go cos it's £50.

0:09:48 > 0:09:51The next designer is 27-year-old mum-of-two Angelica,

0:09:51 > 0:09:56who lives in Leeds and works as a paint adviser for a DIY store.

0:09:56 > 0:10:00As you can see, I use a lot of black in my own home.

0:10:00 > 0:10:04I'm in love with patterns and prints, bold colours, modern.

0:10:04 > 0:10:08The room Angelica is working in was a neutral and plain guest bedroom.

0:10:08 > 0:10:11Rather cute little attic bedroom.

0:10:11 > 0:10:14However, there are some big issues in this room.

0:10:14 > 0:10:16For example, this woodchip on the walls,

0:10:16 > 0:10:19they want it taking off but, frankly,

0:10:19 > 0:10:20it's going to be a nightmare.

0:10:20 > 0:10:23Angelica's brief is to create a hotel-chic room

0:10:23 > 0:10:25with a touch of something extra.

0:10:25 > 0:10:27Well, this room does have quite a lot of oddities

0:10:27 > 0:10:29and I guess there's an opportunity to embrace that.

0:10:29 > 0:10:32I mean, we've got these weird angles coming out here.

0:10:32 > 0:10:37- The ceiling is rather peculiar. - Exactly.

0:10:37 > 0:10:39Odd it up, do it the sort of Arts and Crafts way

0:10:39 > 0:10:43of not having anything that's symmetrical in the room.

0:10:43 > 0:10:45Angelica has embraced the angles

0:10:45 > 0:10:48with an A-frame shelving unit planned.

0:10:48 > 0:10:50She's also using a mix of natural fabrics

0:10:50 > 0:10:52and a muted colour scheme,

0:10:52 > 0:10:55all of which she had to run past her homeowners, Campbell and Kate,

0:10:55 > 0:10:57before work started.

0:10:58 > 0:11:00I didn't want to go with any stronger colours.

0:11:00 > 0:11:03I wanted to keep it quite fresh, not too in-your-face and not too...

0:11:03 > 0:11:06- Busy.- Yeah, too busy. Yeah.- Right.

0:11:06 > 0:11:10- So do you like the look of that so far?- I do, actually.- Yup?- Yup.

0:11:10 > 0:11:13- I want to try and put the bed in front of the window.- Oh, right.

0:11:13 > 0:11:14Simply just to open the space.

0:11:14 > 0:11:17When you open the door at the minute, the bed being here,

0:11:17 > 0:11:20I think it visually blocks you. That's the first thing that you see.

0:11:20 > 0:11:21- It does, yeah.- Yeah.

0:11:21 > 0:11:23And you can't appreciate the unique shape of the room.

0:11:23 > 0:11:26It's wonderful, actually. Never thought of turning a bed that way.

0:11:26 > 0:11:30No. No, I wouldn't have thought of that in a million years!

0:11:30 > 0:11:32Good. Go for that.

0:11:32 > 0:11:33It's not very conventional,

0:11:33 > 0:11:36to put the head of the bed under the window.

0:11:36 > 0:11:38Exactly. But, at the same time,

0:11:38 > 0:11:41she's doing this really quite funky shelving system.

0:11:41 > 0:11:42We thought that was genius.

0:11:42 > 0:11:45It also kind of mirrors the shape of that attic room as well.

0:11:45 > 0:11:47Though, with work underway, it's not the shape of the walls

0:11:47 > 0:11:51but what's on them that's giving Angelica her first headache.

0:11:51 > 0:11:55- This woodchip.- Yes. - How long would it take to come off?

0:11:55 > 0:11:57Apparently, it's plasterboard over here.

0:11:57 > 0:11:59Trouble with stripping paper off of plasterboard

0:11:59 > 0:12:01is that you can damage the plasterboard.

0:12:01 > 0:12:04So it is just best to leave it, then, isn't it?

0:12:04 > 0:12:06In my honest opinion, yeah.

0:12:06 > 0:12:08She'll either need to stick with the dreaded woodchip

0:12:08 > 0:12:11or find a clever way to cover it up.

0:12:11 > 0:12:12What I'm thinking now -

0:12:12 > 0:12:16if I add a textured wallpaper onto the bottom wall and this wall,

0:12:16 > 0:12:19if that's going to work, but I've just got to rethink my budget,

0:12:19 > 0:12:22what's going to have to go to be able to do that.

0:12:25 > 0:12:27- So, it'll be, like, there. - Yeah, that's perfect.

0:12:27 > 0:12:31The final designer is 47-year-old textiles lecturer Lucy,

0:12:31 > 0:12:33from Colchester.

0:12:33 > 0:12:36My style is a kind of mishmash.

0:12:36 > 0:12:38Colour, texture, shape,

0:12:38 > 0:12:43all those elements become my interior design mantra.

0:12:44 > 0:12:48Before she started work, Lucy's room was a drab teenage bedroom.

0:12:48 > 0:12:50Well, this room is actually rather big.

0:12:50 > 0:12:53Yeah, we've got a working area, dressing area

0:12:53 > 0:12:55and also it's a bit empty in the middle.

0:12:55 > 0:12:57So, actually, layout for this space is...

0:12:57 > 0:12:59I actually think it'll be quite challenging.

0:12:59 > 0:13:03Lucy's young client has asked for a futuristic chill-out room.

0:13:03 > 0:13:05But I'm not quite sure how they're going to do

0:13:05 > 0:13:08a really sort of futuristic look, which he wants, in this room.

0:13:08 > 0:13:12Yeah, he has asked for something so cutting-edge. There's even quite

0:13:12 > 0:13:14a lot of jazzy lighting requested for this scheme.

0:13:14 > 0:13:17- Sounds a bit dangerous in an old thatched cottage, doesn't it? - SOPHIE LAUGHS

0:13:17 > 0:13:19Lucy's dangerous design

0:13:19 > 0:13:21includes a stark black and blue colour scheme,

0:13:21 > 0:13:24with metal-effect wallpaper and a futuristic bed,

0:13:24 > 0:13:28which she had to get approval for from 15-year-old Nat

0:13:28 > 0:13:30and his mum, Sarah, earlier on.

0:13:30 > 0:13:35- The bed sits inside a box that's upholstered in black denim.- OK.

0:13:35 > 0:13:39- And then it's got lights underneath it, like this, that you wanted.- Wow.

0:13:39 > 0:13:43- Yeah, yeah.- Then I'm going to paint the floor black, floorboards.- OK.

0:13:43 > 0:13:45- Right.- If they're good enough, take the carpet up

0:13:45 > 0:13:49- and make you this rug...- OK, yeah. - ..that sits under the bed.- Yeah.

0:13:49 > 0:13:52- Is that the design for the rug? - Yeah, sort of.

0:13:52 > 0:13:55- I mean, it may alter a little bit. - OK.- But you like it?

0:13:55 > 0:13:58- Yeah, no, I really like it. - Are you sure?- Yeah.- Good.- Exciting.

0:13:58 > 0:13:59Great.

0:13:59 > 0:14:01She's painting his floor black,

0:14:01 > 0:14:02she's hovering the bed with blue lights,

0:14:02 > 0:14:04I mean, it's a really rocking design.

0:14:04 > 0:14:08Yeah, exactly. And as for the brief, she went beyond it.

0:14:11 > 0:14:14With such an ambitious design, Lucy's cracking on apace,

0:14:14 > 0:14:17painting all the existing oak furniture.

0:14:17 > 0:14:20The plan with this is to get an undercoat on it

0:14:20 > 0:14:23and then paint it a dark grey.

0:14:24 > 0:14:28With so much to do, she needs to be organised and efficient.

0:14:30 > 0:14:33Oh, why am I painting the top?

0:14:33 > 0:14:36The desk is going on top of this.

0:14:36 > 0:14:38Oh, well.

0:14:44 > 0:14:46The judges have watched all four designers

0:14:46 > 0:14:49present their ideas to their clients.

0:14:50 > 0:14:54- You want this to actually follow the pitch of the roof or...?- Yeah.

0:14:54 > 0:14:56And, now they've all got stuck into their workloads,

0:14:56 > 0:14:58they're calling them together

0:14:58 > 0:15:00for a surprise first round of judging.

0:15:00 > 0:15:04- Sarah, the judges would like to see you.- OK.

0:15:04 > 0:15:07- Do you know why they want to see you?- No.

0:15:07 > 0:15:10I wonder why. Do you think I'm being sent home in disgrace?

0:15:12 > 0:15:15At this stage, they're judging not the designs themselves,

0:15:15 > 0:15:18but how skilfully they presented them.

0:15:18 > 0:15:20With just three places in the next round,

0:15:20 > 0:15:24where they're ranked now really matters.

0:15:24 > 0:15:26Now, designers, a little surprise for you.

0:15:26 > 0:15:29We're actually going to judge you on how able you were

0:15:29 > 0:15:31to present your projects.

0:15:33 > 0:15:36Their ability to articulate ideas, their mood boards

0:15:36 > 0:15:39and their drawings will all count.

0:15:39 > 0:15:42Angelica, we thought your boards were beautifully drawn out

0:15:42 > 0:15:44and very, very thoughtful.

0:15:44 > 0:15:45But you had two boards -

0:15:45 > 0:15:47professional designers would have known

0:15:47 > 0:15:49to have shown the practical board first.

0:15:49 > 0:15:52Sarah, I'm rather excited about the use of that wallpaper

0:15:52 > 0:15:57on all four walls, but your client wasn't so sure.

0:15:57 > 0:16:02And I don't think you nailed it with her, so be careful of that, OK?

0:16:02 > 0:16:05Lucy, we thought you did a super presentation.

0:16:05 > 0:16:07It was clear to me what that room's going to look like,

0:16:07 > 0:16:11what's going where, you know, you really sold it.

0:16:11 > 0:16:15Rob, wonderful details, but there was nothing on that board

0:16:15 > 0:16:19which created an image of what you want to do with that space.

0:16:21 > 0:16:24Now, the best...

0:16:26 > 0:16:30- ..is you, Lucy, well done.- Oh!

0:16:30 > 0:16:32Thank you.

0:16:32 > 0:16:34Second place...

0:16:35 > 0:16:37..is Angelica.

0:16:39 > 0:16:41Third place...

0:16:43 > 0:16:44..is Rob.

0:16:45 > 0:16:47SARAH SIGHS

0:16:47 > 0:16:48Fourth, is Sarah.

0:16:51 > 0:16:55I'm feeling a bit deflated, but I have to just, kind of,

0:16:55 > 0:17:00move on and pick myself up and not weep in a corner.

0:17:00 > 0:17:03I've got too much to do to do that!

0:17:03 > 0:17:06Reminded there is a second-round place at stake,

0:17:06 > 0:17:09the designers get straight back to work on their rooms.

0:17:09 > 0:17:13My plan is to actually use the workings of a clock in the tin

0:17:13 > 0:17:16to make a little feature piece for them.

0:17:19 > 0:17:23It's not the first time this village has seen significant reinvention.

0:17:25 > 0:17:28Briantspuddle was originally a sleepy hamlet

0:17:28 > 0:17:31until a certain Ernest Debenham arrived.

0:17:31 > 0:17:34Turning his back on his family's department store business,

0:17:34 > 0:17:35Debenhams in London,

0:17:35 > 0:17:40in 1914 he bought up 10,000 acres of Dorset countryside,

0:17:40 > 0:17:43with a vision to turn it into a self-sufficient community

0:17:43 > 0:17:47using the very latest cutting-edge Edwardian farming methods.

0:17:50 > 0:17:53The output of the farm was incredibly varied,

0:17:53 > 0:17:56with livestock, crops, beehives, even a worm farm.

0:17:56 > 0:17:59This was the dairy ring, designed in a circle to maximise efficiency.

0:17:59 > 0:18:02The horses and carts would queue up here

0:18:02 > 0:18:04to collect produce from the central building.

0:18:04 > 0:18:07The workforce accommodation was strictly divided,

0:18:07 > 0:18:09with herdsmen over here and dairymaids over there.

0:18:09 > 0:18:11Intermingling was frowned upon.

0:18:11 > 0:18:16In fact, any unmarried pregnant women were banished from the estate.

0:18:21 > 0:18:23Hoping to save herself from being banished,

0:18:23 > 0:18:28Sarah is forging ahead with her English countryside design.

0:18:28 > 0:18:30Her ottoman has been constructed

0:18:30 > 0:18:34and the walls are being prepped for papering.

0:18:34 > 0:18:36But the wallpaper isn't the only thing

0:18:36 > 0:18:38her homeowner's having doubts about.

0:18:38 > 0:18:43I would like the picture rail to be white, rather than the darker pink.

0:18:43 > 0:18:46We can definitely have a look at it.

0:18:46 > 0:18:49Sarah has just one chance to get this room right.

0:18:51 > 0:18:54At home, she takes a much more trial-and-error approach.

0:18:54 > 0:18:57I don't subscribe to the school of thought that once you've done...

0:18:57 > 0:18:59"I've done the house."

0:18:59 > 0:19:03You've never done the house, it's always a work in progress.

0:19:03 > 0:19:07It's like, you know, cutting your hair. It's just hair, it grows.

0:19:07 > 0:19:10Stop getting so wound up about it, it's just paint.

0:19:10 > 0:19:14It's just wallpaper. If it looks rubbish, just paint over it.

0:19:14 > 0:19:17She failed to win her client round in the presentation,

0:19:17 > 0:19:20so Sarah still has persuading to do over details,

0:19:20 > 0:19:22like the pink woodwork.

0:19:22 > 0:19:25Once it's against this, it's essentially white.

0:19:25 > 0:19:29- Oh, right, yes, that's better than I thought.- So, actually, it's... Yeah.

0:19:29 > 0:19:31- So, we happy? - Yes, I'm happy.- Good, good.

0:19:31 > 0:19:33I'm really pleased.

0:19:36 > 0:19:41Angelica's hotel chic scheme depends on a sleek, uniform finish.

0:19:41 > 0:19:44And she's come up with an idea to banish the woodchip.

0:19:44 > 0:19:48What we're going to do is, we're going to sand back the woodchip.

0:19:48 > 0:19:51Just so it's a smoother finish.

0:19:51 > 0:19:54She'll then use lining paper to perfect the look.

0:19:54 > 0:19:56But with delivery not due until tomorrow,

0:19:56 > 0:19:58it could jeopardise her schedule.

0:20:01 > 0:20:06At home in Leeds, sleek hotel chic is a look she knows well.

0:20:06 > 0:20:10My partner takes me to nice hotels, which I love,

0:20:10 > 0:20:12because I can get inspiration from that

0:20:12 > 0:20:15and introduce it and recreate it in my own home.

0:20:15 > 0:20:17I've used these cushions to give it a pop of colour.

0:20:17 > 0:20:21This lamp, I bought it just simply because of the base.

0:20:21 > 0:20:24Mustard's on trend at the moment.

0:20:24 > 0:20:26It is about being trendy and being out there

0:20:26 > 0:20:28and getting, you know, the wow factor.

0:20:30 > 0:20:32It's not going to look bodged, is it?

0:20:32 > 0:20:35To be honest, if it was me, I probably wouldn't have bothered.

0:20:35 > 0:20:38- And just given it a new fresh lick of paint...- Just painted it.

0:20:38 > 0:20:40..and put in some other things that distract the eye from it.

0:20:42 > 0:20:45A few doors down, Rob is doing just that.

0:20:45 > 0:20:50His bohemian bedroom is having a fresh lick of paint.

0:20:50 > 0:20:52The chest of drawers is being transformed

0:20:52 > 0:20:55with scaffolding planks he bought for just under £50.

0:20:57 > 0:21:01And he's creating a new bedside light out of something old.

0:21:01 > 0:21:04Got this from a local charity shop.

0:21:04 > 0:21:06It's got a nice finish to it, it's a nice little jar

0:21:06 > 0:21:09that would double up as a nice little lampshade as well.

0:21:09 > 0:21:12Rob believes his passion for repurposing

0:21:12 > 0:21:14will set him apart from the competition.

0:21:14 > 0:21:16One man's junk is another man's treasure

0:21:16 > 0:21:18and that's one of my beliefs.

0:21:18 > 0:21:21Our dining table, it's an old cottage door,

0:21:21 > 0:21:24complete with the letterbox hole as well.

0:21:24 > 0:21:26I like the juxtaposition of different things.

0:21:26 > 0:21:30Old with new, damaged with working.

0:21:30 > 0:21:34If you've got something boring in your house, get it out.

0:21:34 > 0:21:36But in his bohemian scheme,

0:21:36 > 0:21:39Rob didn't persuade his client to change the off-white walls,

0:21:39 > 0:21:43so he's relying on designing products to deliver impact.

0:21:43 > 0:21:44OK, so when that's nice and tight,

0:21:44 > 0:21:47that should just sit roundabout there, like that.

0:21:47 > 0:21:49You know, we are looking for designers who are individual,

0:21:49 > 0:21:52can put their own twist on it. Can you make us love white room schemes?

0:21:52 > 0:21:54That would be a challenge.

0:21:56 > 0:22:00In Lucy's futuristic chill-pad bedroom,

0:22:00 > 0:22:01everything is changing.

0:22:01 > 0:22:03Yeah, that's lovely.

0:22:03 > 0:22:07Most of the furniture has had a coat of black paint.

0:22:07 > 0:22:11The new bedframe has been built and Lucy's already onto the next stage.

0:22:12 > 0:22:16I'm wadding the bedframe, ready to upholster it with the denim.

0:22:17 > 0:22:21- LAUGHING:- Like a sleigh. Like Santa's sleigh, isn't it?

0:22:22 > 0:22:24Covered in snow.

0:22:24 > 0:22:28This isn't the first time Lucy's decorated for a teenage boy.

0:22:29 > 0:22:32She has two of her own at home.

0:22:32 > 0:22:35Sometimes the children and my husband are a bit like,

0:22:35 > 0:22:36"Oh, God, what's she done now?"

0:22:36 > 0:22:39Her sons are often her reluctant guinea pigs.

0:22:39 > 0:22:41It's pretty chaotic.

0:22:41 > 0:22:44You go away for a little bit and you come back

0:22:44 > 0:22:46and you'd have a new painting on the wall.

0:22:46 > 0:22:49Like, when I went away, came back and this was here.

0:22:49 > 0:22:53Not through consent, but just cos she can't stop doing her job.

0:22:53 > 0:22:56Believe it or not, I'd love to live in a minimalist...

0:22:56 > 0:22:59monastery or something.

0:22:59 > 0:23:03Away from all this clutter and madness.

0:23:03 > 0:23:07- Lucy, this project is steaming ahead!- Hello! Yes.

0:23:07 > 0:23:09I'm slightly ad hoc, normally.

0:23:09 > 0:23:12I was going to say, I think it is quite chaotic, isn't it?

0:23:12 > 0:23:14We've got a wardrobe that's half built,

0:23:14 > 0:23:16but it's already got the topcoat on.

0:23:16 > 0:23:18- THEY LAUGH - Exactly.- There's no real method...

0:23:18 > 0:23:21But this is probably the most organised I've been.

0:23:23 > 0:23:25As well as the room schemes,

0:23:25 > 0:23:28there's a big surprise in store for all the designers.

0:23:28 > 0:23:31Sophie and Daniel want to compare their creativity,

0:23:31 > 0:23:35by getting them to upcycle the same item in just 24 hours.

0:23:35 > 0:23:38And, fittingly for an old dairy, it's a vintage milk crate.

0:23:40 > 0:23:42Rob, I've got a surprise challenge for you here.

0:23:42 > 0:23:45This is an old milk crate...

0:23:45 > 0:23:48..and you've got 24 hours to turn this into something

0:23:48 > 0:23:53which is either a one-off piece or something that suits the room.

0:23:53 > 0:23:57Completely redesign it, reinvent it, using your creativity.

0:23:57 > 0:23:59- Good luck.- Right, OK.

0:23:59 > 0:24:02They need to use their milk crates to design and create

0:24:02 > 0:24:06an inspired new product that fits with their scheme.

0:24:06 > 0:24:09How well they do will feed into the judges' decision

0:24:09 > 0:24:12on who leaves the competition.

0:24:12 > 0:24:15The only way to make it any different is going to be to cut it.

0:24:15 > 0:24:19It's the sort of thing that maybe lends itself quite nicely

0:24:19 > 0:24:22to being stood on its end and used as a side table.

0:24:22 > 0:24:25Possibly put it on the wall as storage.

0:24:25 > 0:24:29Smash it up completely and use the wood.

0:24:29 > 0:24:31No ideas whatsoever.

0:24:31 > 0:24:33SHE LAUGHS

0:24:33 > 0:24:36I'm going to need to pull out all the stops on this one, aren't I?

0:24:36 > 0:24:39The judges will see their ideas later on.

0:24:44 > 0:24:47Time is running out on their stressful first day.

0:24:47 > 0:24:50- It's been a learning curve, hasn't it?- Yeah.- Steep, very steep.

0:24:50 > 0:24:53- Oh, yeah, yeah, yeah.- Really steep. - So steep.

0:24:53 > 0:24:56The hard work is far from over.

0:24:56 > 0:24:58I wish I'd got a coat on the floor tonight,

0:24:58 > 0:25:01but that'll have to happen tomorrow night.

0:25:01 > 0:25:06I'm a bit worried now, just simply because of the wallpaper situation.

0:25:06 > 0:25:08And there are still battles to be won.

0:25:08 > 0:25:11I really don't want to go out,

0:25:11 > 0:25:14so I need to just do that last bit of convincing

0:25:14 > 0:25:17that the wallpaper everywhere is the way to go.

0:25:17 > 0:25:19I'm not naturally competitive,

0:25:19 > 0:25:22but maybe now's the time to find that inner will of iron.

0:25:34 > 0:25:36It's the start of the second day.

0:25:36 > 0:25:39We've seen beds constructed, woodchip walls sanded,

0:25:39 > 0:25:43ottoman upholstery and scaffolding planks given a new use.

0:25:43 > 0:25:47But the hard work for our designers is far from over.

0:25:47 > 0:25:51By the end of tomorrow, one of them will be out of the competition.

0:25:52 > 0:25:56Generally apprehensive about the day, just so much to do.

0:25:58 > 0:26:01I'm going to be cracking on with a lot of the bigger items today.

0:26:01 > 0:26:04This morning we are going to have to wait for the wallpaper to arrive,

0:26:04 > 0:26:06so it is going to put us back a bit.

0:26:06 > 0:26:09I'm feeling really good, I had a good night's sleep.

0:26:09 > 0:26:11You know, the only way is up.

0:26:11 > 0:26:13# Ta-da! #

0:26:13 > 0:26:14I'm quite pleased with that.

0:26:17 > 0:26:21Work in Lucy's futuristic chill pad is at full speed from the off.

0:26:23 > 0:26:27Her £63-a-roll, metal-effect wallpaper's going up,

0:26:27 > 0:26:30her shelving constructed and a new desk fitted.

0:26:30 > 0:26:32Well done!

0:26:32 > 0:26:34Super sexy.

0:26:34 > 0:26:35Love it.

0:26:35 > 0:26:39She's making some futuristic wall art on lining paper.

0:26:39 > 0:26:41What I'm trying to do, I think,

0:26:41 > 0:26:44is get it really dark in the middle and fade out.

0:26:44 > 0:26:47So it's a bit like a bike wheel planet.

0:26:47 > 0:26:50Whoo! Lovely.

0:26:50 > 0:26:52I hear you've got two boys.

0:26:52 > 0:26:54What do they think of your ambitions of interior design?

0:26:54 > 0:26:58They're really supportive. They put a good luck card in my bag saying,

0:26:58 > 0:27:02"You can do it, like you always do," or something, which is really sweet.

0:27:02 > 0:27:05Have you experimented on them?

0:27:05 > 0:27:09- Oh, not literally their bodies, no, but their rooms.- Their bedrooms.

0:27:10 > 0:27:14In Rob's bohemian room, the painting's almost finished.

0:27:14 > 0:27:17Oh, wow. Yeah, yeah, that's nice.

0:27:17 > 0:27:20Rob's builder is making the window box,

0:27:20 > 0:27:25while he's busy on another bedside light, this time, made from books.

0:27:25 > 0:27:28You want to make sure the hole cutter

0:27:28 > 0:27:30doesn't grab on the fabric of the book cover.

0:27:30 > 0:27:33It's a nice, clean finish.

0:27:33 > 0:27:36Right, OK, great. There you have it.

0:27:36 > 0:27:40And the bulb, obviously, is just going to sit into the top of there.

0:27:40 > 0:27:43But if Rob's bohemian bedroom is going to impress the judges,

0:27:43 > 0:27:47it will need to be more than just a collection of quirky products.

0:27:49 > 0:27:51Tell me how all those lovely ideas that you've got,

0:27:51 > 0:27:53how are they going to tie together?

0:27:53 > 0:27:55I think, predominantly, the red is, hopefully,

0:27:55 > 0:27:57what's going to tie this scheme together.

0:27:57 > 0:28:00He thinks he's going to do it with a few shades of red.

0:28:00 > 0:28:02I'm really not convinced.

0:28:04 > 0:28:06In her English countryside bedroom,

0:28:06 > 0:28:09Sarah's started making soft furnishings.

0:28:09 > 0:28:11For a first attempt, it's not bad,

0:28:11 > 0:28:15apart from the fact that I've just realised I've left a pin in.

0:28:15 > 0:28:18Her wallpaper's going up, even though her homeowner

0:28:18 > 0:28:21has yet to agree to having it on all four walls.

0:28:21 > 0:28:25Probably going to need about another two or three rolls.

0:28:25 > 0:28:29But, not for the first time, Sarah's got her sums wrong.

0:28:29 > 0:28:32'OK, so, as I thought, I'm short of wallpaper.'

0:28:32 > 0:28:37But by hook or by crook, I am going to get some more.

0:28:38 > 0:28:42No hold-ups in Lucy's room, where she's full steam ahead,

0:28:42 > 0:28:46pulling up the flooring to make way for a rug...

0:28:46 > 0:28:50which she's making herself from grey and blue carpet.

0:28:50 > 0:28:52I suppose, this work's a bit like a jigsaw puzzle,

0:28:52 > 0:28:56you cut out the bits of carpet, butt them together

0:28:56 > 0:28:59and then use the tape to stick them together.

0:29:00 > 0:29:02The rug and bedframe are going into position,

0:29:02 > 0:29:05even though she's yet to paint the floor.

0:29:05 > 0:29:09- What concerns me, is you've got a whole floor to paint tonight.- Mm-hm.

0:29:09 > 0:29:12And you've got to actually get everything out of this room, right?

0:29:12 > 0:29:15- And then bring it all back in...- No, no, no, I'm going to paint round it.

0:29:15 > 0:29:18- Round the rug?- Yeah, rather than try and do the whole lot.

0:29:18 > 0:29:21They will not be impressed if she starts cutting corners

0:29:21 > 0:29:25and I'm beginning to think that maybe that's what's happening.

0:29:25 > 0:29:26That's really not good enough.

0:29:28 > 0:29:30There's been no cutting corners for Angelica.

0:29:30 > 0:29:33Her lining paper has finally arrived.

0:29:33 > 0:29:37The next five minutes is going to be really intense.

0:29:37 > 0:29:39She's hoping it's been worth the wait

0:29:39 > 0:29:43and will create the slick finish she wants in her hotel chic scheme.

0:29:45 > 0:29:48Hopefully it goes up and you can't see any bumps through it.

0:29:54 > 0:29:56It seems her gamble has paid off.

0:29:58 > 0:30:01Oh, I'm so relieved that I can use this wallpaper,

0:30:01 > 0:30:04cos now I can complete the look that I wanted to achieve.

0:30:04 > 0:30:08It's so subtle and it's going to look beautiful.

0:30:08 > 0:30:10The designers haven't just got the task

0:30:10 > 0:30:12of transforming a room in three days,

0:30:12 > 0:30:15they've also got just 24 hours to come up with

0:30:15 > 0:30:18an innovative piece of product design using a vintage milk crate.

0:30:18 > 0:30:22How creative they are will affect who goes through to the next round.

0:30:22 > 0:30:24I'm going to have to be a bit inventive

0:30:24 > 0:30:26and not go down an obvious route.

0:30:26 > 0:30:30Sarah's going all-out to impress, completely repurposing her crate.

0:30:30 > 0:30:33So, this is a bit like a piano stool.

0:30:33 > 0:30:36I always wanted to give her something

0:30:36 > 0:30:38a bit more luxurious to sit on.

0:30:38 > 0:30:41But would you really want to sit on an old crate?

0:30:41 > 0:30:43It doesn't sound comfortable to me.

0:30:43 > 0:30:46And panicking will slow me down, so I'm just going to keep going.

0:30:46 > 0:30:49True to form, Rob's right at home with this challenge.

0:30:49 > 0:30:52The piece that they gave me plays perfectly with the room.

0:30:52 > 0:30:54I've got an idea for what I'm going to do,

0:30:54 > 0:30:56bedside table with some casters on.

0:30:56 > 0:30:58He's got a real eye for the detail.

0:30:58 > 0:31:02He's embellishing it with industrial casters and a scaffold plank on top.

0:31:02 > 0:31:04I think it could look really cool.

0:31:05 > 0:31:08But a bedside table? It's not really going to set the world on fire.

0:31:08 > 0:31:12Lucy plans to send her crate into the 22nd century.

0:31:12 > 0:31:15I'm going to upcycle this into a TV unit.

0:31:15 > 0:31:18It's, kind of, going to look like a bit of futuristic rubbish,

0:31:18 > 0:31:21like in a sci-fi film or something.

0:31:21 > 0:31:25Trying to fit a vintage crate into a futuristic scheme

0:31:25 > 0:31:27sounds a bit difficult to me.

0:31:27 > 0:31:30But she's getting out the silver spray paint

0:31:30 > 0:31:33and that just, quite frankly, sounds tacky.

0:31:33 > 0:31:37Oh, look. Yeah, love it, good.

0:31:37 > 0:31:39While Angelica's making a table.

0:31:39 > 0:31:41OK, so what I want to do with this

0:31:41 > 0:31:43is I want to create, like, a corner unit.

0:31:43 > 0:31:44So I want to take the front piece off

0:31:44 > 0:31:47and then create some kind of top for it.

0:31:47 > 0:31:49- No problem.- Perfect.- OK.

0:31:49 > 0:31:53Angelica's idea for her milk crate shows a real lack of ambition.

0:31:53 > 0:31:55- Oh, amazing.- Is that it?- Yeah.

0:31:55 > 0:31:57She's just got her builder to stick a top on it

0:31:57 > 0:31:59and it doesn't even match in.

0:31:59 > 0:32:02The judges have seen all four milk crate upcycles,

0:32:02 > 0:32:05but the real test will be how well they integrate

0:32:05 > 0:32:06into the finished designs.

0:32:06 > 0:32:09Sophie and Daniel will have to reserve final judgment

0:32:09 > 0:32:11until the schemes are complete.

0:32:15 > 0:32:17- You know what I would like?- Uh-huh?

0:32:17 > 0:32:20- So there's an angle across here. - Yeah?

0:32:20 > 0:32:22From subtle to dramatic,

0:32:22 > 0:32:26our designers are trying to marry practicality and style.

0:32:29 > 0:32:33And Briantspuddle itself is a great example of how to make this work.

0:32:34 > 0:32:36Now, these cottages may look olde-worlde

0:32:36 > 0:32:39with their thatched roofs and their whitewashed walls,

0:32:39 > 0:32:40but if you take a closer look,

0:32:40 > 0:32:43you can see these walls are made out of breezeblocks.

0:32:43 > 0:32:45Like this one here, made from gravel.

0:32:45 > 0:32:48The whole estate was constructed like this, with an eye to the past,

0:32:48 > 0:32:52but also an eye on the architectural trends of the present.

0:32:54 > 0:32:58Inside, too, there are some ingenious design features.

0:32:59 > 0:33:03The herdsmen's house was designed for 15 grown men to share - imagine!

0:33:03 > 0:33:06But it's got wonderful details, like this open staircase,

0:33:06 > 0:33:10which makes a cramped space feel much larger than it actually is.

0:33:10 > 0:33:12In fact, once you start looking,

0:33:12 > 0:33:14you can see signs of the history wherever you look.

0:33:14 > 0:33:17Like the door to the living room, which is peppered with little holes

0:33:17 > 0:33:20from when the herdsmen used to play darts.

0:33:23 > 0:33:26Rob is planning to leave his mark in his bohemian bedroom

0:33:26 > 0:33:28with lots of repurposed products.

0:33:30 > 0:33:35Like the £10 suitcase he's turning into a bedside table.

0:33:35 > 0:33:37These are the legs I'm going to be using,

0:33:37 > 0:33:40which are just taken from an old coffee table.

0:33:43 > 0:33:46Yeah, lovely. That's perfect, that.

0:33:46 > 0:33:48You're a practical man. You have a pencil in your pocket -

0:33:48 > 0:33:51- that tells me you're a practical man.- Always have a pencil, yeah.

0:33:51 > 0:33:56I hate seeing waste, so I just love challenging myself mentally

0:33:56 > 0:33:58as to what I can come up with.

0:33:58 > 0:34:01The weirder, the better, sometimes, as well.

0:34:01 > 0:34:06Steering clear of weird or recycled, Angelica's opted for brand-new

0:34:06 > 0:34:08to get the serene, chic look she's after.

0:34:08 > 0:34:11It looks amazing, it looks exactly how I wanted it.

0:34:11 > 0:34:13The colour's perfect.

0:34:13 > 0:34:16While her new carpet's being fitted,

0:34:16 > 0:34:19she pops next door to check out the competition.

0:34:19 > 0:34:22- Wow!- Come in. What do you think? - This looks amazing.

0:34:22 > 0:34:25Well, I'm kind of gunning for the wallpaper to go everywhere.

0:34:25 > 0:34:30- Yeah, I love it.- To go all the way round.- It's so fresh, isn't it?

0:34:30 > 0:34:33Sarah's room, it's absolutely beautiful,

0:34:33 > 0:34:35and it's really bold and vibrant.

0:34:35 > 0:34:36So I'm just questioning myself,

0:34:36 > 0:34:39whether I've actually pushed myself enough with the brief.

0:34:39 > 0:34:42Her brief was hotel chic with an adventurous edge.

0:34:42 > 0:34:46And she's not the only one wondering if she's playing it too safe.

0:34:46 > 0:34:51The homeowners have asked for something that's going to impress,

0:34:51 > 0:34:52but I'm not seeing it.

0:34:52 > 0:34:54It doesn't pack much punch.

0:35:00 > 0:35:01Around the halfway point,

0:35:01 > 0:35:04the designers have to show their work in progress to their clients.

0:35:05 > 0:35:07- Hiya.- Hi, there, how's it going?- Wow.

0:35:07 > 0:35:10- Yeah, good, yeah. We're good.- Oh, my goodness.- We're getting there, yeah.

0:35:10 > 0:35:12It's a big moment for all of them.

0:35:12 > 0:35:16Any doubts raised now could throw their projects off course.

0:35:16 > 0:35:18There's another topcoat to go on top.

0:35:18 > 0:35:21- Sure, it won't be rough and ready, it'll be smooth.- Sure.

0:35:21 > 0:35:24- I've never been used to coloured ceilings.- Yeah.

0:35:24 > 0:35:25- They've always been white.- Yeah.

0:35:25 > 0:35:28That's going to be interesting for us.

0:35:28 > 0:35:30Sarah promised her homeowner

0:35:30 > 0:35:33a chance to review the wallpaper as it went up.

0:35:33 > 0:35:36- It's interesting, Sarah. - SARAH LAUGHS

0:35:36 > 0:35:38She has enough paper now,

0:35:38 > 0:35:41but still needs to convince her client that four walls of it

0:35:41 > 0:35:45will deliver the calm, traditional bedroom she's hoping for.

0:35:45 > 0:35:49I'm still very wary of...

0:35:49 > 0:35:52I think, coming in and thinking, "Oh, overwhelmed with leaves

0:35:52 > 0:35:56- "and trees and flowers and everything."- Yes.

0:35:56 > 0:35:58I appreciate your nervousness,

0:35:58 > 0:36:01but it's a bit make-or-break in the room, really.

0:36:01 > 0:36:06Once the room is fully dressed and has got all the things in it,

0:36:06 > 0:36:09the wallpaper will go into the background.

0:36:09 > 0:36:14My days are numbered if I don't manage to pull this off.

0:36:17 > 0:36:20- Actually, I think that looks good there.- Yeah.

0:36:20 > 0:36:22Yeah, I do, that looks good there.

0:36:22 > 0:36:25- That would look better there than plain.- Yes.

0:36:25 > 0:36:28- You've managed to convince me. - Oh, good, good.- OK.

0:36:28 > 0:36:30Thank you, I feel like I want to kiss you.

0:36:30 > 0:36:32Thank you!

0:36:34 > 0:36:39Our designers rightly aim for rooms that will satisfy their clients.

0:36:39 > 0:36:41- What do you think, about there? - Yeah.

0:36:41 > 0:36:43Full-on, huh?

0:36:43 > 0:36:44HE LAUGHS

0:36:46 > 0:36:49When Debenham designed this whole community,

0:36:49 > 0:36:53high living standards and happy residents were his ambitions, too.

0:36:55 > 0:36:58Workers' cottages came with a quarter of an acre, a pigpen,

0:36:58 > 0:37:00even an orchard.

0:37:00 > 0:37:03Now, Debenham wasn't being entirely philanthropic.

0:37:03 > 0:37:05A well-housed workforce meant happy employees,

0:37:05 > 0:37:07but it also increased production.

0:37:09 > 0:37:12Debenham's experiment, alas, didn't last forever -

0:37:12 > 0:37:16in 1929, the economic crash hit the countryside as much as the city.

0:37:16 > 0:37:19And, by 1952, the entire estate had been disbanded.

0:37:21 > 0:37:23But the buildings did survive.

0:37:23 > 0:37:25Whether they were pigpens, cow parlours,

0:37:25 > 0:37:29they've all been converted into rather imaginative private homes.

0:37:29 > 0:37:31Debenham's dream may have faded,

0:37:31 > 0:37:33but his vision still lives on in some form.

0:37:42 > 0:37:44It's near the end of the second day.

0:37:47 > 0:37:52I think having a padded headboard is a bit more kind of cocooning.

0:37:52 > 0:37:56They all have a lot to do to keep their place in the competition.

0:37:56 > 0:37:59Tomorrow, it's all guns blazing.

0:37:59 > 0:38:02Well, they've been blazing plenty today,

0:38:02 > 0:38:05but tomorrow we'll get some more guns and they'll blaze as well.

0:38:05 > 0:38:07Really, really, really pleased.

0:38:07 > 0:38:11And I just think that, once everything's in,

0:38:11 > 0:38:14it's just going to look amazing.

0:38:14 > 0:38:16I'm just trying to get the rest of the finishing touches

0:38:16 > 0:38:20on the paint done, allow more time to dress the room tomorrow.

0:38:20 > 0:38:23But, for Lucy, there's no end in sight.

0:38:24 > 0:38:27I've got to de-staple it and sand it.

0:38:29 > 0:38:31Then paint the floor.

0:38:46 > 0:38:48It's the final day and our four designers,

0:38:48 > 0:38:52they've only got a few more hours to go to impress the judges.

0:38:54 > 0:38:58At the end of today, Sophie and Daniel will scrutinise each room

0:38:58 > 0:39:01for coherence, quality and creativity,

0:39:01 > 0:39:04before deciding who to eliminate from the competition.

0:39:05 > 0:39:08Soon our four designers will become three.

0:39:10 > 0:39:11I'm still in a good place.

0:39:11 > 0:39:15Yesterday's good mood has carried on.

0:39:15 > 0:39:18Today's going to be quite a battle to the finish.

0:39:18 > 0:39:22I am a bit worried, just about getting everything finished.

0:39:23 > 0:39:27After working late, ambitious Lucy is also feeling the pressure.

0:39:28 > 0:39:31Last night, I didn't quite finish the floor,

0:39:31 > 0:39:34so I did go home feeling a bit downhearted.

0:39:34 > 0:39:36With the floor paint still drying,

0:39:36 > 0:39:39work in her chill-pad bedroom is at a standstill.

0:39:39 > 0:39:44So Lucy's forced into the garden to make some quirky door handles.

0:39:44 > 0:39:46Just spraying these drumsticks.

0:39:46 > 0:39:50I brought them with me, actually, to make hooks or doorknobs.

0:39:50 > 0:39:52But they're not going to work like that, so we're going to

0:39:52 > 0:39:54put them horizontally along the front of a drawer.

0:39:54 > 0:39:57So you see them, silver against black.

0:40:00 > 0:40:01Is she going to finish?

0:40:01 > 0:40:04We always felt that that design was very ambitious.

0:40:04 > 0:40:06It's going to be incredibly close.

0:40:07 > 0:40:10It's not just Lucy who's falling behind.

0:40:10 > 0:40:14Sarah's forgotten to paint the doors in her country cottage bedroom.

0:40:16 > 0:40:21I was so focused on the wallpaper that I kind of just thought,

0:40:21 > 0:40:23"Woodwork, paint, that's all done."

0:40:23 > 0:40:24And, then, yeah.

0:40:24 > 0:40:26It's not a disaster.

0:40:26 > 0:40:29You know, it's not like the ceiling hadn't been done.

0:40:29 > 0:40:31But anyway, c'est la vie.

0:40:35 > 0:40:39The room is only wallpapered, there's nothing else in there.

0:40:39 > 0:40:42And what a wallpaper it is. It's quite strong for a bedroom.

0:40:42 > 0:40:44Yeah, really, um...vibrant?

0:40:44 > 0:40:47- So nobody will be going to sleep! - No.

0:40:47 > 0:40:50In Rob's room, the chest of drawers has been transformed

0:40:50 > 0:40:53with scaffold plank cladding.

0:40:53 > 0:40:56It looks fantastic. Builder's done an absolutely excellent job.

0:40:56 > 0:40:58And he's adding some of the red

0:40:58 > 0:41:02he's promised will tie his bohemian travel scheme together.

0:41:02 > 0:41:05I think once they're all done, they're all in the unit,

0:41:05 > 0:41:06it's going to look fantastic.

0:41:06 > 0:41:10I'm gutted to be leaving it here, really, I'd like to take it home.

0:41:10 > 0:41:12His homeowners had quite a strong

0:41:12 > 0:41:15and specific colour story that they wanted interpreted.

0:41:15 > 0:41:17And we're yet to really see how he's going to bring the colour

0:41:17 > 0:41:21into that room and actually help make it all hang together.

0:41:22 > 0:41:25Worried her colour isn't impactful enough,

0:41:25 > 0:41:28Angelica's decided a second coat of light blue will help.

0:41:30 > 0:41:32Oh, it's worked really well.

0:41:32 > 0:41:35Which she thinks has made all the difference.

0:41:35 > 0:41:37I was a bit worried, previously,

0:41:37 > 0:41:39just cos I thought I'd gone for too light a shade.

0:41:39 > 0:41:42So I'm happy that it's got more of a contrast now

0:41:42 > 0:41:43and it's worked really well.

0:41:43 > 0:41:45How's Angelica's room shaping up?

0:41:45 > 0:41:47It's looking smart,

0:41:47 > 0:41:49but she's promised that she's going to deliver

0:41:49 > 0:41:50this sort of high-impact effect.

0:41:50 > 0:41:52You know, the real wow with the accessories

0:41:52 > 0:41:55and we haven't seen any of those yet.

0:41:56 > 0:41:58The finishing line is fast approaching.

0:42:01 > 0:42:04Might make them a bit thicker.

0:42:04 > 0:42:09The designers have had three days and £1,000 each to transform a room.

0:42:09 > 0:42:12They've been judged on how well they present to their clients

0:42:12 > 0:42:14and have had to think on their feet

0:42:14 > 0:42:16to come up with an innovative design product,

0:42:16 > 0:42:19which will be judged in their finished room.

0:42:19 > 0:42:21For Angelica, time is running out.

0:42:21 > 0:42:23Do you want to keep it in line with the door?

0:42:23 > 0:42:27- Yeah, if you do it, like, central. That's fine, that's perfect.- Yeah?

0:42:27 > 0:42:29Yeah.

0:42:29 > 0:42:33After battling so hard with the woodchip to get a sleek finish,

0:42:33 > 0:42:36Angelica's now pulling together all the dressings

0:42:36 > 0:42:39she hopes will make her hotel chic room stand out.

0:42:40 > 0:42:46- Thank you.- You're welcome.- Thanks. - Looks good, doesn't it?- Yeah.

0:42:46 > 0:42:48It looks even better than I thought it was going to look.

0:42:48 > 0:42:50I'm actually starting to think

0:42:50 > 0:42:53that I might start doing light rooms in my own house.

0:42:53 > 0:42:57Angelica's brief was to bring hotel chic to a guest bedroom.

0:42:57 > 0:43:01Three days ago, it was an unremarkable and weary room.

0:43:03 > 0:43:07Now, Angelica has created a serene new look.

0:43:09 > 0:43:12She's covered the woodchip walls with lining paper

0:43:12 > 0:43:14and painted them in pale tones.

0:43:15 > 0:43:18She's changed the layout,

0:43:18 > 0:43:21designed some A-framed shelving

0:43:21 > 0:43:25and added cushions and accessories.

0:43:25 > 0:43:28I hope they like it. Actually, I hope they love it.

0:43:31 > 0:43:34I'm a little disappointed by her colour palette, if I'm honest.

0:43:34 > 0:43:36- Mm-hm.- For me, I think the colours are too subtle.

0:43:36 > 0:43:39Yeah, she's played it safe.

0:43:39 > 0:43:43But the bit that's clever is the way that she's done these shelves.

0:43:43 > 0:43:46They kind of play to the funny shapes that are going on in here.

0:43:46 > 0:43:48- Yeah, exactly.- They almost celebrate it a little bit.

0:43:48 > 0:43:50Then she's done a really brave thing,

0:43:50 > 0:43:52- to move the bed into the window. - Very brave.

0:43:52 > 0:43:54I wasn't sure about that, what do you think?

0:43:54 > 0:43:56Well, the reason she did it,

0:43:56 > 0:43:58she said, because it'll give better circulation in the room.

0:43:58 > 0:44:01- It does.- She's right, absolutely, it does.

0:44:01 > 0:44:04Now that the room is finished, Sophie and Daniel

0:44:04 > 0:44:08can judge how well the upcycled milk crate fits the scheme.

0:44:08 > 0:44:10It's been used as some sort of leg

0:44:10 > 0:44:14in order to support the homeowner's treasured yacht.

0:44:14 > 0:44:16It looks a bit makeshift to me. Like, "We need a bit of a table,

0:44:16 > 0:44:19"let's plop something on this old milk crate."

0:44:19 > 0:44:21Yeah, it needs to go one step further.

0:44:21 > 0:44:25Now, she's certainly done hotel chic, but is it impressive?

0:44:25 > 0:44:27Yeah, the question is, for us,

0:44:27 > 0:44:30is this a five-star design or just a rather nice B&B?

0:44:33 > 0:44:36How happy the homeowners are with their finished room

0:44:36 > 0:44:38will inform the judges' decision.

0:44:38 > 0:44:40I 100% want to go through to the next round.

0:44:40 > 0:44:43I've learnt so much these last few days

0:44:43 > 0:44:47and I just think that my next project could be even better.

0:44:47 > 0:44:50They're about to see their new guest bedroom for the first time.

0:44:50 > 0:44:52- My word.- What do you think?

0:44:52 > 0:44:56I can't believe it's the same room, it's absolutely spectacular.

0:44:56 > 0:44:59- Well, you wanted a bit of hotel chic for your guests.- It's beautiful.

0:44:59 > 0:45:01- I think I'll move up here, actually. - THEY LAUGH

0:45:01 > 0:45:03- Is it better than your bedroom? - Yes.- Oh, yeah.

0:45:03 > 0:45:08- You seem completely spellbound. - It just looks so different, yes.

0:45:08 > 0:45:10With his deadline fast approaching,

0:45:10 > 0:45:14Rob is finally bringing all his repurposed objects together.

0:45:14 > 0:45:16Yeah, I like that.

0:45:16 > 0:45:20And adding the touches of colour he promised would unite his scheme.

0:45:28 > 0:45:30Right, that is me...

0:45:32 > 0:45:33..done.

0:45:35 > 0:45:39I'm pleased that it's done, it's been quite an intense three days.

0:45:39 > 0:45:43Rob's brief was to create a bright, bohemian master bedroom

0:45:43 > 0:45:45that had hints of global travel.

0:45:46 > 0:45:50Three days ago, it was a room with little character.

0:45:58 > 0:46:02Now, Rob has kept the walls bright to showcase his bespoke pieces...

0:46:03 > 0:46:06..like his repurposed suitcase bedside table...

0:46:07 > 0:46:09..bedside lights...

0:46:10 > 0:46:12..a new window box

0:46:12 > 0:46:16and his revamped chest of drawers with red edging.

0:46:17 > 0:46:21He's added more colour with soft furnishing and accessories.

0:46:23 > 0:46:24To be honest,

0:46:24 > 0:46:27I feel really good about the room that I've put together.

0:46:27 > 0:46:31Hopefully the judges think the same.

0:46:33 > 0:46:35These lights look very intriguing.

0:46:35 > 0:46:38- We've got a lamp made out of a stack of books.- Mm.

0:46:38 > 0:46:40But the bit I really like is this chest of drawers,

0:46:40 > 0:46:42which looks magnificent.

0:46:42 > 0:46:44That red line around each drawer, it looks super.

0:46:44 > 0:46:47You'd spend quite a bit of money for something like that in the shops.

0:46:47 > 0:46:50Yeah, I think so. It's very classily done.

0:46:50 > 0:46:52And same with the suitcase in the corner.

0:46:52 > 0:46:55Ardent upcycler Rob should've been on safe ground

0:46:55 > 0:46:57with his milk crate challenge.

0:46:57 > 0:47:01But the question is, how well does it tie in with his scheme?

0:47:01 > 0:47:03He's made it into a rather useful bedside table

0:47:03 > 0:47:05with a bit of scaffolding plank on the top.

0:47:05 > 0:47:07And it integrates very well into the room.

0:47:07 > 0:47:10It's almost as if he'd actually found it himself.

0:47:10 > 0:47:14But I think, when he's dressed this room, he's stood, probably,

0:47:14 > 0:47:17about where I'm standing now and spread it out,

0:47:17 > 0:47:20so when you walk in this room it looks really impressive.

0:47:20 > 0:47:23But, frankly, if you look behind me, it's all really quite plain.

0:47:23 > 0:47:26And he hasn't brought any of the colour up onto the walls.

0:47:26 > 0:47:29- That would've been the place to do it.- Mm.

0:47:29 > 0:47:31His presentation was all about colour -

0:47:31 > 0:47:33not quite enough of it in here for me.

0:47:36 > 0:47:39I like to think I've fulfilled my brief, yeah.

0:47:39 > 0:47:41So I'm really confident with what I've done.

0:47:41 > 0:47:44- Come in.- Oh, my goodness. - Oh, my goodness, yes.

0:47:44 > 0:47:47- It's your bedroom.- It is just gorgeous.- It cheers up the room.

0:47:47 > 0:47:49It's absolutely gorgeous! Oh, my goodness me.

0:47:49 > 0:47:52Is there anything that looks a bit odd

0:47:52 > 0:47:54- or something you're not quite sure about?- No.

0:47:54 > 0:47:56Rob explained everything he was going to do

0:47:56 > 0:47:58and I couldn't really visualise it.

0:47:58 > 0:48:01- I thought, "Oh, sounds OK, sounds good."- Yeah.

0:48:01 > 0:48:03- It's amazing.- Yeah.

0:48:03 > 0:48:06Having fought her homeowners every step

0:48:06 > 0:48:08to get her way with the wallpaper,

0:48:08 > 0:48:11Sarah's racing to bring in the furniture and furnishings

0:48:11 > 0:48:14she hopes will set it off perfectly.

0:48:14 > 0:48:16I want to get the shelves up and get the furniture in.

0:48:16 > 0:48:18I'd rather have the lights up.

0:48:18 > 0:48:22In the last few minutes, she brings in a £5 modern cardboard lampshade.

0:48:22 > 0:48:24Could I have a duster, please?

0:48:29 > 0:48:31OK, finished.

0:48:35 > 0:48:38I think it looks really pretty.

0:48:38 > 0:48:42It is warm and it's cosy and it is relaxing.

0:48:42 > 0:48:46It's a kind of "lose yourself in it" room.

0:48:46 > 0:48:49Sarah's brief was for a calm, traditional

0:48:49 > 0:48:51English countryside bedroom.

0:48:53 > 0:48:56Three days ago, this room was tired and old-fashioned.

0:49:02 > 0:49:06Now, Sarah has updated the room with her take on traditional.

0:49:09 > 0:49:12She's wallpapered all four walls in a floral print...

0:49:14 > 0:49:16..repositioned the bed and furniture...

0:49:17 > 0:49:21..added blue highlights throughout,

0:49:21 > 0:49:24as well as that modern lampshade.

0:49:24 > 0:49:27I, personally, think it's a triumph.

0:49:33 > 0:49:36Well, it definitely puts a smile on your face, this room, doesn't it?

0:49:36 > 0:49:40- That's good, isn't it? - Cheery is what I feel in here.

0:49:40 > 0:49:45But this is a bedroom. This room was asked to be warm and relaxing.

0:49:45 > 0:49:48I'm not feeling that at all. I do like the choice of colours.

0:49:48 > 0:49:50I mean, I love the blues on this wall

0:49:50 > 0:49:52and she's got some shelving on the other side, as well.

0:49:52 > 0:49:54And, actually, the curtain

0:49:54 > 0:49:57and the details on the headboard in that blue works very well.

0:49:57 > 0:50:01Very modern light fitting - wasn't expecting that.

0:50:01 > 0:50:04Is that a light fitting or is it just a cardboard box

0:50:04 > 0:50:08- hanging from the ceiling? - OK, you don't love that.- Oh, no.

0:50:08 > 0:50:10Well, not in this room, I think.

0:50:10 > 0:50:13- Really not in this room, but really not anywhere, look at it.- OK.

0:50:13 > 0:50:14SHE LAUGHS

0:50:14 > 0:50:18Sarah must hope they think her upcycled milk crate fits in better.

0:50:18 > 0:50:22- Quite an interesting idea.- I think that the thought is nice...- Mm.

0:50:22 > 0:50:25..to make this into a dressing table stool with somewhere to keep things.

0:50:25 > 0:50:28I just think the way it's been executed is dreadful.

0:50:28 > 0:50:30- This all looks a bit rushed.- Mm.

0:50:30 > 0:50:33My overall sum-up of this room, I think,

0:50:33 > 0:50:36- is she's relied on this wallpaper too much.- Mm.

0:50:38 > 0:50:42I really, really hope the homeowner likes it.

0:50:44 > 0:50:47Here it is, come on in, Una.

0:50:47 > 0:50:49- Oh.- Your new bedroom.

0:50:49 > 0:50:52- It couldn't be more different. - First impressions?

0:50:52 > 0:50:55It's lovely, yeah. I did have reservations about the wallpaper.

0:50:55 > 0:50:59- Now, yeah, so what's your reaction? - I think it's quite nice, but it's...

0:50:59 > 0:51:02- Is it going to take a bit of getting used to?- Yes.

0:51:02 > 0:51:04I would, probably, have used it as a feature wall.

0:51:07 > 0:51:12Last to finish, Lucy is racing to get everything completed.

0:51:12 > 0:51:14# Hallelujah! #

0:51:14 > 0:51:16Having been so ambitious with her design,

0:51:16 > 0:51:19she needs to make sure she doesn't cut too many corners.

0:51:20 > 0:51:23Just wondering whether to turn the duvet over to grey.

0:51:29 > 0:51:30Right.

0:51:32 > 0:51:35Lucy's brief was to create a futuristic chill pad,

0:51:35 > 0:51:37perfect for a teenage boy.

0:51:39 > 0:51:43Three days ago, this bedroom was bland and a little boring.

0:51:49 > 0:51:51Not any more.

0:51:54 > 0:51:56She's rearranged the layout,

0:51:56 > 0:51:59painted all the furniture and the flooring black...

0:52:01 > 0:52:04..used electric blue on the bookshelf and her handmade rug...

0:52:07 > 0:52:09..added metal-effect wallpaper,

0:52:09 > 0:52:12battery-operated LED lights under the bed

0:52:12 > 0:52:16and made bike-wheel wall art.

0:52:16 > 0:52:17Really, really pleased.

0:52:17 > 0:52:21I suppose it's in the lap of the gods now, so just wait and see.

0:52:25 > 0:52:28This room's got great impact, hasn't it?

0:52:28 > 0:52:30She has done so much stuff.

0:52:30 > 0:52:32A big challenge was getting this floor painted

0:52:32 > 0:52:34and I think it looks really dramatic.

0:52:34 > 0:52:37The black sets off all the lighting really well.

0:52:37 > 0:52:40We've got this magical, back-lit bed, which looks like it's floating.

0:52:40 > 0:52:42And I also like the way she's used colour,

0:52:42 > 0:52:45because she's got these different blues going on.

0:52:45 > 0:52:48There's a cobalt blue and there's this lighter blue.

0:52:48 > 0:52:50Then, also on top of it, you've got angles everywhere.

0:52:50 > 0:52:53Angles here, on the wardrobe, there, on the rug,

0:52:53 > 0:52:56which she's made herself. She glued that together.

0:52:56 > 0:52:57Yeah, it's pretty cool.

0:52:57 > 0:53:00And that really clever selection of wallpaper.

0:53:00 > 0:53:03Has she been as clever with her milk crate upcycle,

0:53:03 > 0:53:07integrating a vintage piece into the modern scheme?

0:53:07 > 0:53:10I wondered how she was going to deal with an old-looking crate

0:53:10 > 0:53:12in a futuristic room like this.

0:53:12 > 0:53:15And that's rather good, cos it's stopped looking too ancient

0:53:15 > 0:53:17and she's given it a modern edge.

0:53:17 > 0:53:19- I think it looks naff.- Do you? - Yeah.- Oh, I love it.

0:53:19 > 0:53:21I think it's really cool.

0:53:21 > 0:53:24It's been an audacious project and she's been really ambitious.

0:53:24 > 0:53:28But, on closer inspection, everything has been a little rushed.

0:53:28 > 0:53:30- Yeah.- Cos this is looking a little rough around the edges.- Yeah.

0:53:30 > 0:53:33On that cupboard, it's a bit drippy.

0:53:35 > 0:53:37I've thought about the fact if I had to go home today

0:53:37 > 0:53:40and I think my main focus, at the moment,

0:53:40 > 0:53:44is the fact that Nat likes it.

0:53:44 > 0:53:46Oh, my God.

0:53:48 > 0:53:50So nice.

0:53:50 > 0:53:52HE LAUGHS What do you like best?

0:53:52 > 0:53:54Literally everything.

0:53:54 > 0:53:57- Does anything look not quite right? - Not at all.

0:53:57 > 0:54:00Nothing, absolutely nothing. I'm so pleased.

0:54:03 > 0:54:06All the designers can do now is wait to find out

0:54:06 > 0:54:11who the judges decide isn't worthy of a place in the second round.

0:54:11 > 0:54:14I want to get through to the next round so badly.

0:54:14 > 0:54:16Who knows whether I've done enough,

0:54:16 > 0:54:20but I'd love to have another go, learn from the mistakes.

0:54:20 > 0:54:23It is definitely something that I want to do for the rest of my life.

0:54:23 > 0:54:27And I feel, now, confident enough to believe that I can actually do it.

0:54:27 > 0:54:30I couldn't have done any more than I've done,

0:54:30 > 0:54:34so if it's not right, then I won't be right for the next round.

0:54:34 > 0:54:36What a beautiful village.

0:54:36 > 0:54:39Have our designers risen to the challenge of its beauty?

0:54:39 > 0:54:42They certainly have. I mean, we've seen some very interesting projects.

0:54:42 > 0:54:44Did you like Angelica's room, did it deliver for you two?

0:54:44 > 0:54:46She created these A-frame shelves,

0:54:46 > 0:54:48which I think were really successful.

0:54:48 > 0:54:50There were some disappointments, though.

0:54:50 > 0:54:52I wasn't wowed, if I'm completely honest.

0:54:52 > 0:54:54Well, I don't know what you two are talking about,

0:54:54 > 0:54:56- the homeowner was wowed. - Well, good for them.

0:54:56 > 0:54:58I'm just looking for a little bit more.

0:54:58 > 0:55:01So did Lucy deliver a futuristic chill pad?

0:55:01 > 0:55:04Yeah, she delivered exactly what she said she was going to do.

0:55:04 > 0:55:07But when you started to poke around a little bit in that room,

0:55:07 > 0:55:08there's some shoddy finishes.

0:55:08 > 0:55:13- The homeowners, mum and son, loved it.- Cool.- Brilliant.

0:55:13 > 0:55:15What did you make of Sarah's room?

0:55:15 > 0:55:17It is so great to see an amateur designer

0:55:17 > 0:55:21who's got that much confidence to use a wallpaper like that

0:55:21 > 0:55:22all the way around the room.

0:55:22 > 0:55:25However, it's not a good choice for a bedroom.

0:55:25 > 0:55:29The homeowner wasn't convinced really either.

0:55:30 > 0:55:33Rob's clients wanted a bohemian bedroom

0:55:33 > 0:55:35with elements of global travel - did you see that in it?

0:55:35 > 0:55:37I was pleasantly surprised when I walked in that room.

0:55:37 > 0:55:40My concerns, though, he's a bit of a products guy,

0:55:40 > 0:55:44but actually creating one big interior design scheme

0:55:44 > 0:55:46didn't seem to be quite his skill.

0:55:46 > 0:55:50So, did the homeowner like it, love it, what do you think?

0:55:50 > 0:55:53They loved it!

0:55:53 > 0:55:55So, you've got some favourites, I can tell,

0:55:55 > 0:55:58but have you decided which three are going to go through?

0:55:58 > 0:55:59Actually, not yet.

0:55:59 > 0:56:02I think we've got a little bit more discussion to have.

0:56:11 > 0:56:15A thatched cottage is so many people's idea of perfection,

0:56:15 > 0:56:16but you four have proved

0:56:16 > 0:56:18that traditional doesn't need to be conservative.

0:56:18 > 0:56:23You've all created very individual and original interiors

0:56:23 > 0:56:25for your homeowners to enjoy.

0:56:25 > 0:56:28And you've all done it with passion and energy,

0:56:28 > 0:56:31which, I have to say, we were both impressed by.

0:56:34 > 0:56:37The judges have decided, though,

0:56:37 > 0:56:40that the designer going home this time is...

0:56:45 > 0:56:47..Sarah.

0:56:47 > 0:56:48Oh.

0:56:50 > 0:56:52Ah, well, never mind.

0:56:54 > 0:56:58I feel really upset and really kind of gutted.

0:56:58 > 0:57:01I had thought that, maybe, I could pull it out of the bag,

0:57:01 > 0:57:05after the presentation, but I think...

0:57:05 > 0:57:06I just got it wrong.

0:57:06 > 0:57:09- Hey, hello.- Hello.- How are you?

0:57:09 > 0:57:13When we start looking at the basics, how to create mood in a room,

0:57:13 > 0:57:15she failed. And, for that reason,

0:57:15 > 0:57:17she's not ready to go forward in this competition.

0:57:17 > 0:57:20- Aw, do you like it?- You've done such a wonderful job, yeah.

0:57:43 > 0:57:45If she can just rein it in a little bit,

0:57:45 > 0:57:47get the quality a little bit higher,

0:57:47 > 0:57:49then she'd really have legs in this competition.

0:57:51 > 0:57:53You've done a beautiful, beautiful job.
