0:00:02 > 0:00:05I'm constantly taken aback by the huge variety of property styles

0:00:05 > 0:00:08in Britain, from characterful timber-framed cottages

0:00:08 > 0:00:10to grand townhouses.

0:00:10 > 0:00:13But sometimes the insides don't live up to

0:00:13 > 0:00:16the expectations on the outside.

0:00:16 > 0:00:19So we've gathered together the most talented amateur interior designers

0:00:19 > 0:00:21who think they could be the next big thing

0:00:21 > 0:00:25to show us how it's done, but it's not as easy as it looks.

0:00:25 > 0:00:26Oi!

0:00:26 > 0:00:27Crikey.

0:00:27 > 0:00:28I'm a bit stressed.

0:00:28 > 0:00:30Across three knockout episodes,

0:00:30 > 0:00:34a group of designers will compete for one place in finals week.

0:00:34 > 0:00:36I'm feeling a bit like, "Ah!"

0:00:36 > 0:00:37Who built this?

0:00:37 > 0:00:39I love it!

0:00:39 > 0:00:42Judging them, two industry experts -

0:00:42 > 0:00:43Daniel Hopwood...

0:00:43 > 0:00:45To make it through to the final four,

0:00:45 > 0:00:48they will have to impress with every inch of their designs.

0:00:48 > 0:00:50..and Sophie Robinson.

0:00:50 > 0:00:53These designs really do need to be outstanding.

0:00:53 > 0:00:56They'll be scrutinising presentation skills...

0:00:56 > 0:00:58That's not the way to present to somebody.

0:00:58 > 0:01:00..artistic flair...

0:01:00 > 0:01:03Have you ever seen that done before? No, it's weird.

0:01:03 > 0:01:06..and how well they deliver their brief.

0:01:06 > 0:01:07Pretty amazing transformation.

0:01:07 > 0:01:09Absolutely beautiful.

0:01:09 > 0:01:13In the finals, the best will face giants of the design world -

0:01:13 > 0:01:14Oliver Heath...

0:01:14 > 0:01:15Oh, my word.

0:01:15 > 0:01:18..Orla Kiely... It does look quite rough.

0:01:18 > 0:01:19..and Kelly Hoppen.

0:01:19 > 0:01:21I want perfection.

0:01:22 > 0:01:24But only one can be crowned winner of

0:01:24 > 0:01:26The Great Interior Design Challenge.

0:01:34 > 0:01:38Last time, three amateur designers battled to impress the judges.

0:01:38 > 0:01:41The orange is definitely going to warm the design

0:01:41 > 0:01:42and just make it a bit more funky.

0:01:42 > 0:01:44That's just not enough.

0:01:44 > 0:01:46One went home.

0:01:46 > 0:01:47Two of them made it through.

0:01:47 > 0:01:51I'm really, really proud of myself.

0:01:51 > 0:01:54I'm just so chuffed to... to have got as far as this.

0:01:54 > 0:01:58The competition's about to get even more interesting.

0:01:58 > 0:02:00This time, the last two amateur designers in our group

0:02:00 > 0:02:03are in Sussex, battling it out for a quarterfinal place

0:02:03 > 0:02:08by bringing two medieval bedrooms up-to-date in timber-framed houses.

0:02:09 > 0:02:12Going head-to-head are two very different designers.

0:02:12 > 0:02:16Rob is the great inventor that comes up with quirky details.

0:02:16 > 0:02:20Now, if he could turn those into one solid scheme,

0:02:20 > 0:02:21I think we've got a winner.

0:02:21 > 0:02:22Oh, hang on a minute.

0:02:22 > 0:02:26He's up against Lucy, who is a whirling dervish of creativity.

0:02:26 > 0:02:28There is nothing that girl can't turn her hand to.

0:02:28 > 0:02:31It's their toughest challenge yet.

0:02:31 > 0:02:33Oh, why isn't it easy?

0:02:33 > 0:02:34I'm not seeing any level of calmness.

0:02:34 > 0:02:37I'm seeing blind, kind of, nervous energy.

0:02:37 > 0:02:40He's more of a maker than an integrator.

0:02:40 > 0:02:43Only one will make it through.

0:02:43 > 0:02:48The designer going through to the quarterfinals is...

0:02:54 > 0:02:58The design battle's taking place in an historic spot in East Sussex.

0:02:58 > 0:03:01How many of us have dreamed of living in a picture-perfect

0:03:01 > 0:03:03timber-framed medieval house?

0:03:03 > 0:03:05The ones here in the village of Robertsbridge

0:03:05 > 0:03:09are up to 700 years old, amongst the oldest in the country,

0:03:09 > 0:03:10and they easily conjure up

0:03:10 > 0:03:13a romantic vision of Olde Worlde England.

0:03:14 > 0:03:19Now our two amateur designers must work for 21st-century clients

0:03:19 > 0:03:21and transform a small bedroom each.

0:03:27 > 0:03:30I'm actually going to make the bed,

0:03:30 > 0:03:32and at the end of the bed,

0:03:32 > 0:03:34there's going to be, sort of, like, a little toy trunk.

0:03:34 > 0:03:36Both designers have spent the past week

0:03:36 > 0:03:39working on a brief from their homeowners.

0:03:39 > 0:03:42I'm nervous because of the anticipation.

0:03:42 > 0:03:44There's only two of us in this round,

0:03:44 > 0:03:46so a lot more to lose, I think.

0:03:46 > 0:03:49They've each got a small team to help them,

0:03:49 > 0:03:51including a decorator and a builder.

0:03:51 > 0:03:54Oh, my God, you're having a laugh.

0:03:54 > 0:03:56It's easy!

0:03:56 > 0:03:58They also have a budget of ?1,000

0:03:58 > 0:04:01and three days to make their transformations.

0:04:01 > 0:04:03This is the cave we're going to be working in.

0:04:03 > 0:04:06To make it through to round three is just wicked

0:04:06 > 0:04:10and, hopefully, when I go through to the quarterfinals,

0:04:10 > 0:04:12that'll be even better still.

0:04:14 > 0:04:17All right, those shelves might have to be moved, centred, later,

0:04:17 > 0:04:19but we'll worry about that.

0:04:19 > 0:04:22First up is textile design teacher Lucy.

0:04:22 > 0:04:25We've got another inch this way.

0:04:25 > 0:04:27Lucy is hugely innovative

0:04:27 > 0:04:29and can turn her hand to almost anything,

0:04:29 > 0:04:32but because she tries to do that little bit too much,

0:04:32 > 0:04:34the end result is rather shonky,

0:04:34 > 0:04:37when we're looking for sleek.

0:04:37 > 0:04:41Now, if she can rein it in, get that quality up,

0:04:41 > 0:04:43then I might be really impressed.

0:04:43 > 0:04:47This time, Lucy's redesigning what was a bland guest bedroom,

0:04:47 > 0:04:50which Sophie and Daniel checked out before work began.

0:04:53 > 0:04:55It's a really nice light and bright room, isn't it?

0:04:55 > 0:04:57Yes, it has perfect proportions.

0:04:57 > 0:04:59Even though this room, I can imagine,

0:04:59 > 0:05:03was carved out of a much larger room at one stage.

0:05:03 > 0:05:06Lucy's clients are furniture restorers

0:05:06 > 0:05:08with a very specific brief.

0:05:08 > 0:05:12They want a 19th-century Swedish scheme with a built-in box bed.

0:05:12 > 0:05:15I think, this time, the challenge for Lucy is going to be, actually,

0:05:15 > 0:05:17to get the spatial planning right,

0:05:17 > 0:05:20because the homeowner wants a built-in bed,

0:05:20 > 0:05:22but in very Scandinavian style.

0:05:22 > 0:05:25One thing the brief asked for is for something folksy and handmade,

0:05:25 > 0:05:27and that really plays to Lucy's strengths

0:05:27 > 0:05:30but she is going to have to rein it in.

0:05:30 > 0:05:32Not too many makey-dos on this one.

0:05:32 > 0:05:36The main challenges are that it's quite a small room.

0:05:36 > 0:05:41I don't want to overcrowd it, as I might have done in the past.

0:05:42 > 0:05:45She's reduced how much stuff she's adding, but the ambition remains,

0:05:45 > 0:05:48with a huge, bespoke, built-in bed,

0:05:48 > 0:05:50the centrepiece of her traditional Scandi scheme

0:05:50 > 0:05:52of soft blues and creams,

0:05:52 > 0:05:55with hand-painted floral details.

0:05:55 > 0:05:57So, I'm going to show you the mood board.

0:05:57 > 0:06:01She had to get the OK from client Anne before work started.

0:06:01 > 0:06:05What I want to do is a very hand-finished look for you.

0:06:05 > 0:06:07It's not just HER Lucy must impress -

0:06:07 > 0:06:11Sophie and Daniel will be keeping a close eye on both designers,

0:06:11 > 0:06:14as, once again, they'll be judged on their presentation skills.

0:06:14 > 0:06:18What I want to make for you is this bed from the 1830s,

0:06:18 > 0:06:19which I know you like. Mm-hmm. Yes.

0:06:19 > 0:06:22I've used that as inspiration,

0:06:22 > 0:06:26and I've actually found some lovely timber in a skip...

0:06:26 > 0:06:28Mmm. ..which is 100-year-old pine.

0:06:28 > 0:06:30Wow. Painted pine,

0:06:30 > 0:06:31and it's actually blue-grey.

0:06:31 > 0:06:34And then, I'm going to decorate the bed for you,

0:06:34 > 0:06:37so it's going to be the central focus of the room.

0:06:37 > 0:06:40That's what I wanted, yes. Absolutely. Oh, oh, great. Yes.

0:06:40 > 0:06:42Lucy's using Rosemaling,

0:06:42 > 0:06:45a traditional Scandinavian hand-painting technique,

0:06:45 > 0:06:48to add floral patterns to the bed.

0:06:48 > 0:06:51There'll be a built-in cupboard-wardrobe at the end.

0:06:51 > 0:06:54Oh, wonderful, yeah. And this is your colour palette,

0:06:54 > 0:06:58so the walls are going to be a rich, creamy neutral.

0:06:58 > 0:07:00Very similar. More or less similar.

0:07:00 > 0:07:02And then we've got sisal on the floor,

0:07:02 > 0:07:06and then some rag rugs to soften that on top.

0:07:06 > 0:07:08It's just what I wanted. Oh, perfect. Thank you.

0:07:10 > 0:07:12I think that's a really ambitious build,

0:07:12 > 0:07:14and it looked lovely in her sketch,

0:07:14 > 0:07:18but to make that look like an authentic Scandinavian box-bed

0:07:18 > 0:07:20is going to take quite a lot of mastery.

0:07:22 > 0:07:24Just moments into work,

0:07:24 > 0:07:27Lucy realises she forgot a key part of her presentation.

0:07:27 > 0:07:28Right.

0:07:28 > 0:07:30I've brought the floor plan to show you

0:07:30 > 0:07:33cos I forgot to include it in my presentation. Yes. That's good.

0:07:33 > 0:07:36Um, so, the built-in bed will be here,

0:07:36 > 0:07:38and then we've got the small chest there -

0:07:38 > 0:07:40such a beautiful thing -

0:07:40 > 0:07:42with some more of your objects on it.

0:07:42 > 0:07:43Yeah, that sounds very good.

0:07:43 > 0:07:46I think she really understood the brief

0:07:46 > 0:07:51and it seems the organisation of the room will be just perfect.

0:07:54 > 0:07:56But, as Lucy's discovering...

0:07:57 > 0:07:5825 is...

0:07:58 > 0:08:02..working in these tiny, wonky rooms is a challenge.

0:08:02 > 0:08:06It's massively smaller than I anticipated.

0:08:06 > 0:08:09But I'm just wondering, if Laurie moves, if he's in your way,

0:08:09 > 0:08:11and paints the ceiling over there, cos we can always...

0:08:11 > 0:08:14I'll be in here hours to get this level,

0:08:14 > 0:08:16if you want it "level" level.

0:08:16 > 0:08:19Jostling for space isn't the only issue.

0:08:19 > 0:08:23So, do we shorten the legs or lengthen the legs?

0:08:23 > 0:08:24Shorten the legs.

0:08:24 > 0:08:28Traditional Scandinavian beds were built high off the floor

0:08:28 > 0:08:30to keep out draughts.

0:08:30 > 0:08:33Lucy was planning to keep hers low, for easy access,

0:08:33 > 0:08:35but her client wants authenticity.

0:08:35 > 0:08:38Do you mind if we shorten the legs?

0:08:38 > 0:08:41No, most of those beds, you actually step up to. Yes, I...

0:08:41 > 0:08:43Actually, they're high rather than low. Yes.

0:08:43 > 0:08:47Well, I think we need to take it up, like, another six inches.

0:08:47 > 0:08:48Do you? Yeah.

0:08:48 > 0:08:51I think it would be very nice if it was higher.

0:08:51 > 0:08:53We will look into it. I'm sure it's possible.

0:08:56 > 0:08:58We've measured the height of the bed.

0:08:58 > 0:09:01It's got to be another 25cm high,

0:09:01 > 0:09:04so the builder's now going to get the legs ready to raise it.

0:09:04 > 0:09:09I know once he gets started, it won't be as awful as it is now.

0:09:12 > 0:09:15Competing against Lucy for a place in the quarterfinal

0:09:15 > 0:09:17is engineering manager Rob.

0:09:17 > 0:09:20Rob's a wonderful inventor but he can have problems

0:09:20 > 0:09:23setting those products into one cohesive scheme.

0:09:23 > 0:09:25This time, I want to see brilliance,

0:09:25 > 0:09:29both in product design, but also interior design.

0:09:29 > 0:09:32The room Rob's working on this time started out as

0:09:32 > 0:09:35a cluttered seven-year-old boy's bedroom.

0:09:39 > 0:09:42This is a tiny room but I know it's for a young man.

0:09:42 > 0:09:44I think it's one of the challenges, isn't it?

0:09:44 > 0:09:46With a children's room, you know, obviously,

0:09:46 > 0:09:48it's a place for them to rest, relax and sleep,

0:09:48 > 0:09:51but it's also a place to store all their toys.

0:09:51 > 0:09:54But there is another challenge in this room.

0:09:54 > 0:09:56It's part of a medieval house,

0:09:56 > 0:09:59so Rob has got eight-foot by eight-foot to deal with,

0:09:59 > 0:10:00so good luck to him.

0:10:00 > 0:10:03Rob's young client has set his sights on

0:10:03 > 0:10:06a Batman-inspired fantasy den.

0:10:06 > 0:10:10This is a super opportunity for Rob to do a very cohesive scheme,

0:10:10 > 0:10:13and yet bring out all that great, creative product design

0:10:13 > 0:10:16that we know he's really talented at. Exactly.

0:10:16 > 0:10:19It's the perfect project for him, but because of that,

0:10:19 > 0:10:21I expect nothing less than excellence.

0:10:24 > 0:10:27Rob's going all out with a dramatic superhero scheme,

0:10:27 > 0:10:29complete with a Batmobile-inspired bed,

0:10:29 > 0:10:31dark walls with a menacing skyline,

0:10:31 > 0:10:33and moody lighting.

0:10:33 > 0:10:36For me, as a designer, this was just ace.

0:10:36 > 0:10:39Superheroes, little gadgets and trick stuff,

0:10:39 > 0:10:41secret bits and bobs.

0:10:41 > 0:10:47The scheme is called James's Superhero Sanctuary.

0:10:47 > 0:10:49Rob had to get the go-ahead from his client James

0:10:49 > 0:10:52and mum Mhairi before work began.

0:10:52 > 0:10:55Look at that Batmobile!

0:10:55 > 0:10:57So what do you think, initially? Look at the bed.

0:10:57 > 0:11:00I want my bed to be like that. What I'll... Fantastic.

0:11:00 > 0:11:02Your bed is going to be like that...

0:11:02 > 0:11:03Yeah!

0:11:03 > 0:11:07..and on the side, where you've got these wheels, here,

0:11:07 > 0:11:10that's where the little toy chest is going to be. Fantastic.

0:11:10 > 0:11:13I've got some Lego, with which I'm actually going to make you

0:11:13 > 0:11:17a tower lamp, like one of the buildings from Gotham. Oh, look!

0:11:17 > 0:11:21One of the big things I'm going to do is the city...

0:11:21 > 0:11:26the cityscape is going to go against this wall and it's going to be...

0:11:26 > 0:11:29Whoa. It's going to be led with some LED lights as well.

0:11:29 > 0:11:31Awesome!

0:11:31 > 0:11:32All right.

0:11:32 > 0:11:35Rob's bold ideas are an instant hit with James

0:11:35 > 0:11:37but mum Mhairi has concerns.

0:11:37 > 0:11:40The walls are going to be painted in this grey.

0:11:40 > 0:11:43But, if it's OK, just to see what a bit of this looks like in here...

0:11:43 > 0:11:46Yeah, of course, yeah. ..and then, if it needs to, kind of,

0:11:46 > 0:11:48come up a shade lighter, that would... Yeah, we can lighten it up.

0:11:48 > 0:11:50That would be ideal. Yeah.

0:11:50 > 0:11:51Are we good to go?

0:11:51 > 0:11:54Good to go! Have we got the seal of approval? Yes.

0:11:54 > 0:11:56Whoo! All right. Let's do it.

0:11:56 > 0:11:59It's a really cohesive scheme. Lots of original thought.

0:11:59 > 0:12:02I mean, I love the Gotham city wall with the LED lighting.

0:12:02 > 0:12:05The trouble is, that homeowner's chickening out of that strong grey,

0:12:05 > 0:12:06and I think that room needs it.

0:12:06 > 0:12:09I think if he goes lighter he'll lose the effect.

0:12:12 > 0:12:15While the dark grey is tested on the walls,

0:12:15 > 0:12:17Rob makes a start on his ambitious build.

0:12:17 > 0:12:20You know, the cityscape background and the Batmobile bed,

0:12:20 > 0:12:24they're going to be my two, sort of, main projects.

0:12:24 > 0:12:28It's the biggest bespoke item he's tackled in the competition.

0:12:28 > 0:12:30Yeah, it's looking good.

0:12:30 > 0:12:31All right.

0:12:31 > 0:12:32Just a little down. Yeah.

0:12:32 > 0:12:36In such a tiny room, his measurements must be spot-on.

0:12:36 > 0:12:39So, I'm just trying to get an idea for how it might look

0:12:39 > 0:12:42by putting myself at that level,

0:12:42 > 0:12:45which is a bit hard when I'm not the same height

0:12:45 > 0:12:47as a seven-year-old,

0:12:47 > 0:12:50so probably somewhere around about there,

0:12:50 > 0:12:51if I can be something close.

0:12:53 > 0:12:58Yeah, that looks cool, if I was seven.

0:12:58 > 0:13:00HE GRUNTS

0:13:00 > 0:13:02And relax.

0:13:08 > 0:13:11Thank God we've got this shade here.

0:13:11 > 0:13:13Already up against it, both designers now have

0:13:13 > 0:13:16the added pressure of being judged on their presentations.

0:13:16 > 0:13:20Lucy won in the first round but the victory was Rob's last time.

0:13:20 > 0:13:22When do we go?

0:13:22 > 0:13:23Do we ride at dawn?

0:13:23 > 0:13:26I don't know if I'll win the presentation today,

0:13:26 > 0:13:29because I forgot the floor plan and that's going to go against me.

0:13:29 > 0:13:32I, really, fingers crossed, I hope I can pull it out the bag.

0:13:32 > 0:13:35How well they've done at this stage will count

0:13:35 > 0:13:36in the judges' final decision.

0:13:36 > 0:13:38Nerve-racking.

0:13:42 > 0:13:44As the competition progresses into the quarterfinals,

0:13:44 > 0:13:48we are going to be scrutinising every single detail.

0:13:48 > 0:13:50And I've scrutinised you, Lucy.

0:13:50 > 0:13:53I think you presented this project beautifully well.

0:13:53 > 0:13:56I understood what you were going to do in that room,

0:13:56 > 0:13:57but there were no plans.

0:13:57 > 0:13:59What's a project without plans?

0:13:59 > 0:14:00It's where I start.

0:14:00 > 0:14:02I felt quite disappointed.

0:14:02 > 0:14:04Rob, I think we've seen a great improvement on how

0:14:04 > 0:14:06you do your presentations,

0:14:06 > 0:14:09and you created a really great rapport

0:14:09 > 0:14:11with your seven-year-old client.

0:14:11 > 0:14:12The homeowner, however,

0:14:12 > 0:14:15got cold feet about the shade of grey that you were going to

0:14:15 > 0:14:18paint on the walls, and I think you conceded a little quickly,

0:14:18 > 0:14:21and it could mean that your scheme is compromised.

0:14:21 > 0:14:24Had you done a better coloured, rendered,

0:14:24 > 0:14:25three-dimensional sketch,

0:14:25 > 0:14:27you might have kept her on board.

0:14:29 > 0:14:34With a quarterfinal place at stake, this is a crucial moment.

0:14:34 > 0:14:38We have taken into account every single detail,

0:14:38 > 0:14:39and the winner is...

0:14:43 > 0:14:45..Rob.

0:14:45 > 0:14:46Well done.

0:14:46 > 0:14:49Huh. Yeah. Thanks. Lucy, nice presentation -

0:14:49 > 0:14:52didn't quite make the mark this time. Mm-hmm. Because of the plans.

0:14:52 > 0:14:53I know.

0:14:55 > 0:14:57I'm gutted I forgot my floor plan.

0:14:57 > 0:15:01It's knocked my confidence a little bit, to be honest.

0:15:01 > 0:15:03I'm ecstatic that I won that,

0:15:03 > 0:15:06and that's, sort of, for me, twice...twice on the trot, now,

0:15:06 > 0:15:10so that's a really good boost to my confidence.

0:15:16 > 0:15:20With confidence levels varied, they get straight back to work,

0:15:20 > 0:15:23each hoping to impress with their design ideas,

0:15:23 > 0:15:26in houses that were built with showing off in mind.

0:15:28 > 0:15:32The Weald of Sussex and Kent was a rich heartland of medieval England,

0:15:32 > 0:15:35and if you were prosperous enough around these parts,

0:15:35 > 0:15:37you'd probably have lived in a Wealden hall house -

0:15:37 > 0:15:39the dreams home of their age.

0:15:39 > 0:15:43Their owners spent their wealth on lavish timber frames,

0:15:43 > 0:15:46and huge central halls the full height of the building,

0:15:46 > 0:15:49and the biggest luxury of all - a private bedroom.

0:15:52 > 0:15:55A 12th-century Norman abbey once stood on this site before it was

0:15:55 > 0:15:57moved to a more secluded spot,

0:15:57 > 0:16:00but people have been digging up its remains ever since.

0:16:00 > 0:16:04This might have been part of the architrave - or archway -

0:16:04 > 0:16:05of the abbey.

0:16:08 > 0:16:10With such British heritage here,

0:16:10 > 0:16:14Lucy's Scandinavian brief could be hard to make fit.

0:16:14 > 0:16:19I'm just sanding back this old chest of drawers,

0:16:19 > 0:16:22to give it an 1830s Swedish overhaul.

0:16:24 > 0:16:27I'm going to paint it a kind of dark greeny grey,

0:16:27 > 0:16:31and then do some detail... hand-painted detailing on it.

0:16:31 > 0:16:34She's ageing the furniture by sanding, painting

0:16:34 > 0:16:35and distressing it.

0:16:36 > 0:16:39I'm too hot.

0:16:39 > 0:16:42It's so hard in this heat, isn't it?

0:16:42 > 0:16:45Thank God I'm not upholstering sofas.

0:16:48 > 0:16:51Lucy's determined to keep this scheme realistic,

0:16:51 > 0:16:55having been overambitious throughout the first two rounds...

0:16:55 > 0:16:58I want to get the chair painted,

0:16:58 > 0:16:59the table-base painted,

0:16:59 > 0:17:00finish the cupboard.

0:17:00 > 0:17:02Oh, I've got to make the chandelier.

0:17:02 > 0:17:05Oh, and cut the ottoman in half.

0:17:05 > 0:17:07..though she's proved she can deliver

0:17:07 > 0:17:09innovative and impressive designs.

0:17:09 > 0:17:13We've got this magical back-lit bed which just looks like it's floating.

0:17:13 > 0:17:14Oh, this is super,

0:17:14 > 0:17:17and I think there's some really lovely styling in here.

0:17:19 > 0:17:21Hi. Hello, Lucy. How are you getting on,

0:17:21 > 0:17:23on officially the hottest day of the year?

0:17:23 > 0:17:27Yes, it's hard. It's really hard in this heat, I must say, but, yeah.

0:17:27 > 0:17:29And you've got loads to do. Yes, yeah.

0:17:29 > 0:17:31Ambitious project, again. Ugh!

0:17:31 > 0:17:34I didn't think it was so ambitious for me.

0:17:34 > 0:17:35It's more the builder.

0:17:35 > 0:17:37Sorry, Builder.

0:17:37 > 0:17:39The traditional Swedish beds are quite high.

0:17:39 > 0:17:41So, have you got enough wood for it?

0:17:41 > 0:17:43Cos you were going for some old pine that you'd found. Yes.

0:17:43 > 0:17:45I think we have.

0:17:45 > 0:17:48Erm, we might have to combine it with MDF.

0:17:48 > 0:17:51I'm desperately hoping I can marry the two together and distress...

0:17:51 > 0:17:54It's all right, you don't have to. I hate to use the word "MDF"

0:17:54 > 0:17:57next to the pine, but I'm hoping...

0:17:57 > 0:17:59Erm, you won't notice.

0:17:59 > 0:18:03If she mixes MDF with the pine,

0:18:03 > 0:18:06in order to make up the wood that she's lacking,

0:18:06 > 0:18:07we're in trouble, because that bed

0:18:07 > 0:18:10will not look authentic Scandinavian.

0:18:11 > 0:18:13Rob's bed must be fit for a superhero,

0:18:13 > 0:18:15requiring some intricate sawing.

0:18:15 > 0:18:18SAW BUZZES With the bed that I'm doing,

0:18:18 > 0:18:21because it's.. It's like a Batmobile bed

0:18:21 > 0:18:24so, at one end, it has the tail fins for it,

0:18:24 > 0:18:26so they're going to protrude up quite a bit.

0:18:26 > 0:18:28TOOL BUZZES

0:18:35 > 0:18:38How's the back looking, with the fins?

0:18:38 > 0:18:39Smashing!

0:18:39 > 0:18:41Yes, bring it in.

0:18:41 > 0:18:43All right.

0:18:44 > 0:18:46Young James may be happy,

0:18:46 > 0:18:49but with his dark grey paint now dry in the room,

0:18:49 > 0:18:51mum Mhairi is checking up.

0:18:54 > 0:19:00Would it be a terrible bother to keep this colour here... Yeah.

0:19:00 > 0:19:03..and maybe lighten some areas?

0:19:03 > 0:19:06I don't think it would necessarily be the biggest problem.

0:19:06 > 0:19:08I think one place where it might not be quite so bad

0:19:08 > 0:19:12is the...the cityscape that I did. Yes, OK.

0:19:12 > 0:19:16Make it a bit more, almost, dusky, rather than night-time. OK, OK.

0:19:16 > 0:19:20After the judges warned Rob not to compromise his design,

0:19:20 > 0:19:21he's taking a big risk.

0:19:21 > 0:19:24HE SIGHS

0:19:24 > 0:19:27I think I could have given in, but I don't feel like I did,

0:19:27 > 0:19:29and I feel like I've stood my ground with it,

0:19:29 > 0:19:33and the design isn't... isn't going to be hampered.

0:19:34 > 0:19:36Rob has a point to prove,

0:19:36 > 0:19:40after being a little inconsistent in the first two rounds.

0:19:40 > 0:19:44He began by prioritising product design...

0:19:44 > 0:19:45A nice little jar, but will...

0:19:45 > 0:19:48would double up as a nice little lampshade.

0:19:48 > 0:19:50When you walk in this room, it looks really impressive,

0:19:50 > 0:19:52but, frankly, if you look behind me,

0:19:52 > 0:19:54it's all really quite plain.

0:19:54 > 0:19:58..and then went too far to prove he could deliver a unified scheme.

0:19:58 > 0:20:00Blue, blue, blue! Look!

0:20:00 > 0:20:03Everything kind of blends into each other a little bit too much.

0:20:03 > 0:20:06I'd like to have seen a bit more gold in here, for example.

0:20:06 > 0:20:10Now he's got to innovate and decorate in equal measure.

0:20:10 > 0:20:13It's actually getting all those pieces to hang together... Yeah.

0:20:13 > 0:20:16..in one overall scheme, that we really want to see.

0:20:16 > 0:20:19I'm approaching it from a slightly different angle this time.

0:20:19 > 0:20:23Two of the big pieces in the room, the bed and the cityscape,

0:20:23 > 0:20:26although they are the bigger pieces, they're two of the, the, kind of,

0:20:26 > 0:20:28the quirky touches that I'm putting into it, as well.

0:20:28 > 0:20:30Which colour grey are you going to go for?

0:20:30 > 0:20:33I would like to go with the grey that I came in here with,

0:20:33 > 0:20:36cos that's what my design was... was, sort of, based around,

0:20:36 > 0:20:39but I do want to keep the room quite light,

0:20:39 > 0:20:42because the black bed and the black background,

0:20:42 > 0:20:44it could suck a little bit of that...

0:20:44 > 0:20:46that lightness out of the grey.

0:20:47 > 0:20:49He's thinking of using a paler grey.

0:20:49 > 0:20:51What he doesn't realise is that, actually,

0:20:51 > 0:20:53the darker colour will look better.

0:20:53 > 0:20:56All his accessories will jump out, and there are other ways that you

0:20:56 > 0:21:00can make that room look lighter rather than just using paint.

0:21:03 > 0:21:06We only need to get to that light fitting, with the ceiling.

0:21:06 > 0:21:08TOOL BUZZES On top of their room schemes,

0:21:08 > 0:21:09at this third-round stage,

0:21:09 > 0:21:12the judges have another challenge up their sleeve -

0:21:12 > 0:21:15to turn a load of old junk into a bespoke, stand-alone product.

0:21:17 > 0:21:18The judges would like to see you.

0:21:18 > 0:21:20Yeah, OK.

0:21:20 > 0:21:21Bun-bun-bun!

0:21:21 > 0:21:23Have I really got to go?

0:21:23 > 0:21:24By setting the challenge,

0:21:24 > 0:21:27we've freed the designers of the constriction of a brief,

0:21:27 > 0:21:29so we can actually see

0:21:29 > 0:21:31how instinctively good designers they are.

0:21:33 > 0:21:34Hello. Hello.

0:21:34 > 0:21:36Hello. Hi.

0:21:36 > 0:21:40Now, you're both fighting for a place in the quarterfinals,

0:21:40 > 0:21:43so we've decided to up the stakes a little bit.

0:21:43 > 0:21:45There are a lot of things in this van.

0:21:45 > 0:21:47You can take as much as you want,

0:21:47 > 0:21:50and what we want you to do is turn it into something that is

0:21:50 > 0:21:55either a great product or a home ware that you could be really proud of.

0:21:55 > 0:21:59This is an opportunity for you to be wildly innovative.

0:21:59 > 0:22:01We want you to play to your strengths

0:22:01 > 0:22:04and create a statement piece that shows me and Dan

0:22:04 > 0:22:06who you really are as a designer.

0:22:09 > 0:22:13So, designers, you have ten minutes to rummage around in this van

0:22:13 > 0:22:16and take what you want.

0:22:16 > 0:22:18Get going.

0:22:19 > 0:22:22If we get a few of the things out and have a look...

0:22:22 > 0:22:24Sophie and Daniel will decide which designer shows

0:22:24 > 0:22:28the most creativity and delivers the best item.

0:22:28 > 0:22:32A win here could help them secure their place in the quarterfinal.

0:22:32 > 0:22:34You just take what you want, cos I am.

0:22:39 > 0:22:41I'm taking this lot here.

0:22:41 > 0:22:43Yeah, that's all right, yeah.

0:22:43 > 0:22:45I think this is really exciting,

0:22:45 > 0:22:48because these two are both hugely innovative. Mm.

0:22:48 > 0:22:51I mean, you know, you've got Rob, who makes brilliant products.

0:22:51 > 0:22:54You've got Lucy, who can turn a hand to literally anything

0:22:54 > 0:22:55we've shown her so far.

0:22:55 > 0:22:58Lucy's pile of junk includes old coffee tables,

0:22:58 > 0:23:00a copper pipe and a lamp.

0:23:00 > 0:23:02I'm thinking, maybe,

0:23:02 > 0:23:06some kind of light or some kind of shelving.

0:23:06 > 0:23:10Rob's selected a copper basket, a broom handle and an old bike.

0:23:10 > 0:23:12I've got this old fella.

0:23:12 > 0:23:14Designers, time is up.

0:23:16 > 0:23:18When I was looking at Lucy's, I thought,

0:23:18 > 0:23:20"Ooh, I do like the look of that," but I daresay,

0:23:20 > 0:23:23she liked the look of some of mine, but she's not having it.

0:23:23 > 0:23:24This is a time challenge,

0:23:24 > 0:23:27and they get 90 minutes on day two to complete it.

0:23:34 > 0:23:38It's the afternoon of the first day and both designers are busy.

0:23:38 > 0:23:39Lucy's cream walls have been painted

0:23:39 > 0:23:42and she's bringing some colour to the scheme

0:23:42 > 0:23:44with subtle, authentic touches.

0:23:44 > 0:23:48What I'm going to do is do a bit of hand-painting on the wardrobe,

0:23:48 > 0:23:53inspired by a Scandinavian wardrobe design I found.

0:23:53 > 0:23:56I'm just going to do a simple border around the door.

0:23:56 > 0:23:59The colour's good.

0:23:59 > 0:24:01I'm pleased with that.

0:24:01 > 0:24:03There's far less restraint at Rob's,

0:24:03 > 0:24:07as he puts in motion his plan for a Bat-bed with scrap tyres.

0:24:07 > 0:24:09It looks cool, actually.

0:24:10 > 0:24:12CAMERA CLICKS

0:24:16 > 0:24:19It's been a rigorous first day.

0:24:19 > 0:24:20Oh, dear, I don't know.

0:24:20 > 0:24:23It's a challenge, isn't it? It is such a challenge, isn't it?

0:24:23 > 0:24:25I mean, a big room was hard,

0:24:25 > 0:24:27but little rooms, God, it's different.

0:24:27 > 0:24:29Yeah, well, it's funny, when you get stuff in and out of the room

0:24:29 > 0:24:31and, you know, people coming in

0:24:31 > 0:24:33and having to duck. Having four people in there. Yeah.

0:24:33 > 0:24:35The designers have been hard at it,

0:24:35 > 0:24:37working to two very different briefs.

0:24:37 > 0:24:39Lucy's historical boudoir...

0:24:39 > 0:24:42Yeah, I think they'll be all right.

0:24:42 > 0:24:44..is up against Rob's dramatic superhero den...

0:24:44 > 0:24:46Yeah, it's going to look cool.

0:24:46 > 0:24:50..but only one of them will succeed in going through to the next round.

0:24:50 > 0:24:52There's still a lot to do,

0:24:52 > 0:24:55so I think, if I can do it,

0:24:55 > 0:24:58and achieve all the things that I said I'll do,

0:24:58 > 0:25:00all is not lost.

0:25:00 > 0:25:03I'm looking forward to tomorrow, just to get stuck in again and...

0:25:03 > 0:25:04and, you know, get it done.

0:25:14 > 0:25:16Day two has begun.

0:25:16 > 0:25:19Beds have been built, city skylines are coming to life,

0:25:19 > 0:25:22but our two designers are going to have to push themselves to the limit

0:25:22 > 0:25:25if they're going to get through to the next stage.

0:25:25 > 0:25:29I'm much more worried about the competition than I ever have been.

0:25:29 > 0:25:31It's just having to, sort of, think on your feet,

0:25:31 > 0:25:34in this kind of timescale that you've got -

0:25:34 > 0:25:35that is a little bit difficult.

0:25:39 > 0:25:40By the end of tomorrow,

0:25:40 > 0:25:43one of these designers will be out of the competition.

0:25:45 > 0:25:47Hoping it won't be her is Lucy,

0:25:47 > 0:25:50whose Scandinavian box-bed design is being fitted...

0:25:50 > 0:25:53THEY KNOCK ON WOOD

0:25:53 > 0:25:56I didn't realise quite how big it was.

0:25:56 > 0:25:59..although the wonky room isn't making things easy...

0:25:59 > 0:26:01Erm, he's trying to get the end of the bed in, and it's...

0:26:01 > 0:26:04It's a fraction out, so he's got to carry it all the way to the

0:26:04 > 0:26:08end of the garden again to re-trim it, which is a nightmare for him.

0:26:11 > 0:26:14..so she takes time to paint her antique pine

0:26:14 > 0:26:16with a traditional folk design.

0:26:16 > 0:26:19Basically, I did this image at home.

0:26:19 > 0:26:23I painted this, to see, to check out how to do the Rosemaling effect -

0:26:23 > 0:26:26just to have a go at it, experiment.

0:26:26 > 0:26:29I'd love the homeowner to see a bit of the effect.

0:26:29 > 0:26:34It would give me a bit more of a confidence boost, I think,

0:26:34 > 0:26:37if she saw it, and it, and I was on the right track.

0:26:40 > 0:26:42Yes. So, the 1830s Swedish...

0:26:42 > 0:26:44Did that, kind of, faze you when you first saw it?

0:26:44 > 0:26:48Immediately, it really fazed me, but then, when I researched it,

0:26:48 > 0:26:49I actually really liked it -

0:26:49 > 0:26:52the fact that it was so old and antique.

0:26:52 > 0:26:55Each time you've done a round, each room has been really different.

0:26:55 > 0:26:58Do you like that kind of challenge of throwing yourself into

0:26:58 > 0:27:00something completely different?

0:27:00 > 0:27:01I think I do.

0:27:01 > 0:27:04I think what I know now is that I do love working to a brief

0:27:04 > 0:27:08and that the constraints of that really inspire me.

0:27:10 > 0:27:14Right, so, are you ready to make my lamps for me, then? Whoo!

0:27:14 > 0:27:17Rob's lighting up his superhero scheme with some of his trademark

0:27:17 > 0:27:20lamp inventions, with the help of an electrician.

0:27:20 > 0:27:23One of the lamps that I'm doing, it's like a... It's a Lego tower.

0:27:23 > 0:27:26Cool. So, I've, kind of, left it hollow all the way down,

0:27:26 > 0:27:28with an outlet for the cable. Yeah.

0:27:28 > 0:27:29Did you spend a lot of time on this?

0:27:29 > 0:27:31Yeah, yeah, quite a lot, yeah.

0:27:33 > 0:27:35The blocks are glued together with solvent cement,

0:27:35 > 0:27:38to keep the wires safely inside.

0:27:38 > 0:27:40Hey, yeah. Is that what we were after?

0:27:40 > 0:27:42That looks great, that.

0:27:44 > 0:27:48Happy with that, he's moving on to his next invention -

0:27:48 > 0:27:50a secret hidey-hole.

0:27:50 > 0:27:52When I started thinking about the theme for the room,

0:27:52 > 0:27:55you know, a big part of that is, you know, superheroes,

0:27:55 > 0:27:58and I wanted to bring that, sort of, that fun factor and,

0:27:58 > 0:28:01you know, the secrecy little bit to it,

0:28:01 > 0:28:03because, you know, all superheroes have their own

0:28:03 > 0:28:04little secret compartments,

0:28:04 > 0:28:07and I think he should have one, as well.

0:28:07 > 0:28:10Rob's mounted a framed picture onto sliding hinges

0:28:10 > 0:28:13he bought from a DIY store for a few pounds each.

0:28:13 > 0:28:16Move it in like that, and then it will release,

0:28:16 > 0:28:19and you can open the picture frame out and get to what's behind it.

0:28:19 > 0:28:21DRILL BUZZES So, in theory, this would be

0:28:21 > 0:28:24mounted to a, you know, fairly chunky frame behind it.

0:28:24 > 0:28:27The chunky frame will create a shallow alcove behind.

0:28:27 > 0:28:31Yeah, I'm very happy with that. That's working great.

0:28:31 > 0:28:34So, Rob, what's it been like to work on a seven-year-old's bedroom?

0:28:34 > 0:28:37Have you been out to channel your inner boy?

0:28:37 > 0:28:40Yeah, it's been great. It's been a fantastic brief.

0:28:40 > 0:28:42And I know you love making stuff

0:28:42 > 0:28:43and you did in the first round. Yeah, yeah.

0:28:43 > 0:28:46You did less of that in the second round. Have you done a bit...?

0:28:46 > 0:28:49I've tried to, maybe, find a little bit more of a balance, this time.

0:28:49 > 0:28:53I don't want to just be, kind of, pigeonholed as a product designer.

0:28:53 > 0:28:56I'm really starting to get a feel for, you know,

0:28:56 > 0:28:59doing a cohesive room scheme, as a whole.

0:29:03 > 0:29:05Alongside their room schemes,

0:29:05 > 0:29:07the amateurs have been given another challenge.

0:29:07 > 0:29:10They have 90 minutes to transform junk from a van

0:29:10 > 0:29:12into a stand-alone product.

0:29:13 > 0:29:15We've devised the challenge to

0:29:15 > 0:29:17ultimately test our designers' creativity.

0:29:17 > 0:29:19They've got to play to their strengths and design

0:29:19 > 0:29:24a one-off item that really shows us who they are as a designer.

0:29:24 > 0:29:27As ever, Lucy's working hastily, with her coffee tables,

0:29:27 > 0:29:29copper piping and lamp.

0:29:29 > 0:29:33We're going to... It's a shelving unit with lamp attachment.

0:29:34 > 0:29:36That's going to go there... Oh, that fits.

0:29:36 > 0:29:40I've just thought of the name for it - TableLamp.

0:29:41 > 0:29:44Inventive Rob's engineered a plan,

0:29:44 > 0:29:46using the old bike and copper basket.

0:29:46 > 0:29:49I'm actually going to make it into a bike-lamp.

0:29:49 > 0:29:52So, I've kind of... I've already knocked together...

0:29:52 > 0:29:55All my lamp fittings are pretty much all done and ready to go.

0:29:58 > 0:30:00Both designers have a basic crafts box

0:30:00 > 0:30:02and their builders at their disposal.

0:30:02 > 0:30:06Do you think we could make it a big enough hole, Dickie,

0:30:06 > 0:30:09and put this pipe all the way up the middle?

0:30:09 > 0:30:13DRILL BUZZES Lucy's approach is a little chaotic.

0:30:13 > 0:30:16We ought to probably cut this first, didn't we, to length?

0:30:16 > 0:30:18But we don't know how long to do it.

0:30:21 > 0:30:24She's chosen to turn one table bright blue,

0:30:24 > 0:30:26using a fast-drying spray.

0:30:26 > 0:30:28That's it. Down all the way.

0:30:28 > 0:30:31(OK, she's stacking a load of tables on top of each other.)

0:30:31 > 0:30:34(Copper pipe in the middle. Bulb on the top.)

0:30:34 > 0:30:36(Genius, and she's calling it TableLamp.)

0:30:36 > 0:30:38(You love that, don't you? Yeah. It's so clever.)

0:30:38 > 0:30:42SHE GRUNTS Oh, well done.

0:30:42 > 0:30:45In his element, Rob is pioneering new ways of working.

0:30:45 > 0:30:49I'm just making a spray glove,

0:30:49 > 0:30:52which is just something I've literally just invented right now.

0:30:55 > 0:30:59The yellow jam jar will replace the broken light bracket at one end,

0:30:59 > 0:31:02while his broom handle and copper basket

0:31:02 > 0:31:05will become a lamp-head where the saddle once was.

0:31:05 > 0:31:08Who'd have thought it? They've both come up with floor lamps.

0:31:08 > 0:31:10I know. Great floor-lamps, too,

0:31:10 > 0:31:12and this is proof in the pudding, with Rob.

0:31:12 > 0:31:14We always say he's a great inventor, and here he is,

0:31:14 > 0:31:17coming up with such fantastic ideas. Mm-hm.

0:31:17 > 0:31:18I think he's loving it.

0:31:18 > 0:31:20This is what we wanted from our designers.

0:31:20 > 0:31:22We wanted them to rise to the challenge.

0:31:25 > 0:31:26With time ticking on,

0:31:26 > 0:31:29both designers are racing to meet the 90-minute deadline.

0:31:29 > 0:31:31How long have we got on this?

0:31:31 > 0:31:34About five minutes. Oh.

0:31:34 > 0:31:37How well they've transformed their junk will help determine who

0:31:37 > 0:31:39will win a place in the quarterfinal.

0:31:39 > 0:31:41Yeah, that's lovely.

0:31:41 > 0:31:44I would call this piece the Unridable Ride.

0:31:44 > 0:31:46Yeah, I'm happy, overall.

0:31:46 > 0:31:49Having lost out to rob on the client presentation,

0:31:49 > 0:31:53Lucy's pinning her hopes on a victory this time.

0:31:53 > 0:31:56Fingers crossed, cos this is a very vintage lamp.

0:31:56 > 0:31:58Yay! There you go!

0:32:00 > 0:32:01Look! Dickie, look!

0:32:01 > 0:32:03Yeah, it's very impressive(!)

0:32:03 > 0:32:04I'm pleased with that.

0:32:06 > 0:32:08Which one will take the crown?

0:32:08 > 0:32:11All will be revealed later.

0:32:11 > 0:32:13Now I've just got all the other stuff to do.

0:32:25 > 0:32:28Back to their room schemes, and our designers are making their

0:32:28 > 0:32:32changes to these medieval homes that have survived for centuries.

0:32:32 > 0:32:35These buildings are made from sturdy oak beams,

0:32:35 > 0:32:37infilled with wattle and daub.

0:32:37 > 0:32:41Underneath this lime-washed skin, are woven branches - the wattle -

0:32:41 > 0:32:43smoothed over with a combination of

0:32:43 > 0:32:46mud, animal dung and straw - the daub.

0:32:46 > 0:32:49It's amazing to think that such fragile materials

0:32:49 > 0:32:52have survived for so long, protected from the elements

0:32:52 > 0:32:54underneath those steep-pitched eaves.

0:33:00 > 0:33:02The technology that went into these buildings

0:33:02 > 0:33:04was hi-tech in the day - even for our day.

0:33:04 > 0:33:07Entire walls, complete with doors and windows,

0:33:07 > 0:33:09were prefabricated off-site,

0:33:09 > 0:33:11brought to the spot, hoisted up and connected together,

0:33:11 > 0:33:13like some kind of medieval flat pack,

0:33:13 > 0:33:16and those curved beams are special to this area -

0:33:16 > 0:33:20a medieval innovation to stop the whole frame from sagging,

0:33:20 > 0:33:21to give it some extra strength.

0:33:25 > 0:33:28Lucy has come up with her own bespoke flat pack -

0:33:28 > 0:33:31a Scandinavian-style built-in bed...

0:33:31 > 0:33:32Are we in? Are we in?

0:33:32 > 0:33:36..but bad news - she's run out of pine.

0:33:36 > 0:33:40Because the bed's taller than it was originally, the timber's tight.

0:33:40 > 0:33:43A lot of it's come from a skip - the old pine -

0:33:43 > 0:33:45and then we're combining it with the MDF,

0:33:45 > 0:33:47and I want to, kind of,

0:33:47 > 0:33:50patchwork it together to make it even more authentic.

0:33:50 > 0:33:54Lucy's hoping she can blend the MDF into the bed frame

0:33:54 > 0:33:56by distressing it first.

0:33:56 > 0:33:58The builder's not overly happy with that,

0:33:58 > 0:34:00but I'm going to try and persuade him.

0:34:00 > 0:34:03TOOL BUZZES

0:34:03 > 0:34:05Before either of the designers get any further,

0:34:05 > 0:34:07their homeowners are paying them a visit

0:34:07 > 0:34:09to check on the progress of their rooms.

0:34:09 > 0:34:13In an ideal world, it would be further on.

0:34:13 > 0:34:16Any problems at this stage could have a major impact

0:34:16 > 0:34:17on their schemes.

0:34:17 > 0:34:19This is at a point where, there's sort of, like,

0:34:19 > 0:34:22the most change in the room so far.

0:34:22 > 0:34:25After compromising a little on colour, Rob is nervous.

0:34:25 > 0:34:27All the grey's on.

0:34:27 > 0:34:30We're just looking at lightening the grey for the...the one wall.

0:34:30 > 0:34:32His client's mum is going away on a trip,

0:34:32 > 0:34:35so won't see Rob finish the scheme.

0:34:35 > 0:34:39I really am very much looking forward to seeing the room.

0:34:39 > 0:34:41'Today will be the last chance that I get to

0:34:41 > 0:34:44'put my oar in, as it were.'

0:34:44 > 0:34:46Hello. Hello, can I come in? Yes, of course. Yes.

0:34:46 > 0:34:48But has Rob got it right?

0:34:48 > 0:34:51How are you? Oh, wow. Look at this.

0:34:51 > 0:34:53It's not that gloomy!

0:34:53 > 0:34:57So, that's just the test patch of the lighter grey that we've done,

0:34:57 > 0:34:59so we mixed a couple and did a few tests.

0:34:59 > 0:35:02I think, you know, in principle, having something a bit lighter

0:35:02 > 0:35:06to offset Gotham City is... is just good anyway. Yeah.

0:35:06 > 0:35:08You know, I'm really pleased that you've done this.

0:35:08 > 0:35:10I'll see you shortly. See you shortly.

0:35:10 > 0:35:12'I think the midway reveal went really well.

0:35:12 > 0:35:14'I haven't come away thinking,'

0:35:14 > 0:35:17"Oh, God, what do I do with this? I've got to change that."

0:35:17 > 0:35:20Hi there. Oh... Oh, wow.

0:35:20 > 0:35:23That's different. We're on the way but a long way to go. Yeah.

0:35:23 > 0:35:24But, erm... Yeah.

0:35:24 > 0:35:26So, I've started to do these. Oh, wow.

0:35:26 > 0:35:29These are the panel... These... Oh, for the front there.

0:35:29 > 0:35:31Yes. Oh, they're nice.

0:35:31 > 0:35:35It's obvious how much Lucy has taken on, even to her client.

0:35:35 > 0:35:37We're now 1.30pm,

0:35:37 > 0:35:40so you have not so long to go.

0:35:40 > 0:35:43Do you think you're going to manage finishing everything? Erm...

0:35:43 > 0:35:45I've got to do the curtains,

0:35:45 > 0:35:48but I've got tomorrow morning and this evening.

0:35:48 > 0:35:51Well, I'm quite speedy so I think it'll be all right.

0:35:51 > 0:35:53Yeah, you'd better crack on. I'd better get back to work. Crack on.

0:35:53 > 0:35:56I know, yeah, get everything done. OK.

0:35:56 > 0:35:59It's just really fantastic

0:35:59 > 0:36:03and the only concern is whether she'll have time to finish.

0:36:03 > 0:36:06I think I'm worried slightly about timing.

0:36:06 > 0:36:07Obviously, I'm human.

0:36:07 > 0:36:09There's a lot to do.

0:36:12 > 0:36:15Time may be against the designers

0:36:15 > 0:36:18but the passing of time has made these houses what they are today.

0:36:20 > 0:36:24This staircase might be rickety but it's not that old.

0:36:24 > 0:36:27When the house was built, this was the outside wall,

0:36:27 > 0:36:28and this, a window,

0:36:28 > 0:36:30and in here, there's another charming feature.

0:36:30 > 0:36:32Up there, some pargeting -

0:36:32 > 0:36:34a very simple form of decorative plasterwork.

0:36:34 > 0:36:37It would have been applied to the daub with a stick,

0:36:37 > 0:36:39like an early form of interior design.

0:36:43 > 0:36:44Before it was subdivided,

0:36:44 > 0:36:47this would have been one huge space with a fire in the middle,

0:36:47 > 0:36:48but it would have been very acrid.

0:36:48 > 0:36:51All the smoke and ash would have flown through the air

0:36:51 > 0:36:52and up out through the rafters,

0:36:52 > 0:36:56but in the 17th century a fireplace and a chimney was added,

0:36:56 > 0:36:58and it was a multifunctional design,

0:36:58 > 0:37:01with a little cubbyhole here for storing your spices,

0:37:01 > 0:37:04your salt and your wicks, to keep them dry and warm

0:37:04 > 0:37:06before the advent of central heating.

0:37:11 > 0:37:14Modern advancements made life easier,

0:37:14 > 0:37:16but there's nothing easy about working in

0:37:16 > 0:37:18these higgledy-piggledy rooms,

0:37:18 > 0:37:21as Lucy's team once again tries to fit the bed.

0:37:21 > 0:37:23Are you all right?

0:37:23 > 0:37:27I'm crossing my fingers, Dick, Dickery-doo-dah.

0:37:27 > 0:37:31We haven't checked the length or anything, which was a bit daft.

0:37:31 > 0:37:33Oh, no.

0:37:33 > 0:37:35It's too tall, is it? Uh-huh.

0:37:35 > 0:37:37Oh, why isn't it easy?

0:37:37 > 0:37:39Can't we chop a bit out of the bed?

0:37:41 > 0:37:43To add to the chaos, they all have to clear the room

0:37:43 > 0:37:46for the new sisal flooring to be fitted,

0:37:46 > 0:37:48so Lucy cracks on outside,

0:37:48 > 0:37:51making rag rugs for her Scandi scheme.

0:37:51 > 0:37:54So, I'm just going to hand-stitch three of these together

0:37:54 > 0:37:56to make one big rug.

0:37:56 > 0:37:58It's a cheap way of making a large rug,

0:37:58 > 0:38:00as they cost just ?5 each,

0:38:00 > 0:38:02but it'll eat up more time.

0:38:02 > 0:38:05I know what you're like, Lucy. You like making things.

0:38:05 > 0:38:07Have you pared it back this time?

0:38:07 > 0:38:09I'm... Yes.

0:38:09 > 0:38:10I was...

0:38:10 > 0:38:12Honestly? Honestly, honestly,

0:38:12 > 0:38:15there's the bed, the wardrobe and the chest of drawers.

0:38:15 > 0:38:18You're doing "less is more"? Oh, I'm trying...

0:38:18 > 0:38:19Wow. ..for the first time...

0:38:19 > 0:38:23For the first time ever in your life? ..ever.

0:38:25 > 0:38:29For Rob's action-packed scheme, the garden is filling up.

0:38:29 > 0:38:32Progress is flying along with the Bat-bed.

0:38:32 > 0:38:33His cityscape is constructed

0:38:33 > 0:38:36and there are winged creatures aplenty...

0:38:36 > 0:38:38Yeah, I'm quite happy with that.

0:38:38 > 0:38:41..one of which will be projected across the room from a lamp,

0:38:41 > 0:38:42made out of an empty tin.

0:38:42 > 0:38:45This is quite another important feature of the room,

0:38:45 > 0:38:47so I just need to clean it up,

0:38:47 > 0:38:50and if I can just trim this up and make it nice and smooth.

0:38:50 > 0:38:52then we shouldn't have any issues with, you know,

0:38:52 > 0:38:54scratching and cutting, and things like that.

0:38:54 > 0:38:57The miniature MDF bat will be attached to

0:38:57 > 0:39:00the centre of his lamp, so it casts a shadow across the room.

0:39:00 > 0:39:01That looks pretty good.

0:39:01 > 0:39:04Yeah, I'm... I'm quite happy with that.

0:39:06 > 0:39:08It is tiny in here, and I'm looking out there,

0:39:08 > 0:39:11and it's looking like a film set with loads of stuff.

0:39:11 > 0:39:13How are you going to pack it into here, Rob?

0:39:13 > 0:39:14Yeah, well, it's a good question,

0:39:14 > 0:39:17but I'm going to introduce, you know, a shelf in here, as well,

0:39:17 > 0:39:19so a couple of things can be lifted off the ground.

0:39:19 > 0:39:22We've got a toy chest, which is going to,

0:39:22 > 0:39:24sort of, fit in with the line of the bed,

0:39:24 > 0:39:27so that's not really a space that could be used for playing,

0:39:27 > 0:39:29but it'd be great for storage.

0:39:29 > 0:39:33If you noticed, all that room's got in it is grey paint,

0:39:33 > 0:39:34and everything is outside,

0:39:34 > 0:39:38which shows to me that he's more of a maker than an integrator.

0:39:40 > 0:39:44Leaving his blockbusting scheme in pieces across the garden,

0:39:44 > 0:39:46Rob's off to see his rival's scheme...

0:39:46 > 0:39:48It could be that I walk in and go,

0:39:48 > 0:39:52"Uh-oh, I've got a lot more work to do."

0:39:52 > 0:39:55I like that blue. That's nice. Oh, good.

0:39:55 > 0:39:58Have you painted those by hand? Yes.

0:39:58 > 0:39:59So, have you got much to do now?

0:39:59 > 0:40:02How long are you staying? Loads. Yeah. Loads. Absolutely loads. Mmm.

0:40:02 > 0:40:05..but it seems it's made him more confident.

0:40:05 > 0:40:08I think some of the hand-detailing stuff that she'd done, you know,

0:40:08 > 0:40:11it's really nice stuff, but it's not something I'd do,

0:40:11 > 0:40:15or something I'd really have, you know, in my own home,

0:40:15 > 0:40:17but I'm sure there's plenty of stuff that I've done

0:40:17 > 0:40:19that she, you know, probably wouldn't put into hers.

0:40:22 > 0:40:25Day two is drawing to a close

0:40:25 > 0:40:28and Lucy is still worrying over her workload.

0:40:28 > 0:40:30I've got to finish this bed,

0:40:30 > 0:40:34do the door for the wardrobe-cupboard,

0:40:34 > 0:40:39erm,, make curtains, pillows, things like that.

0:40:39 > 0:40:42I want to go through, but at this stage,

0:40:42 > 0:40:45I can't see the wood for the MDF.

0:40:45 > 0:40:47SHE CHUCKLES

0:40:47 > 0:40:51Rob has finally got a key piece of his design into the room.

0:40:51 > 0:40:54I'm just, kind of, looking at the cityscape that I've brought in.

0:40:54 > 0:40:57It seems to work really well, I think.

0:40:57 > 0:40:58The light's fading a bit.

0:40:58 > 0:41:01We're going to start wrapping up and get back to the hotel,

0:41:01 > 0:41:04get a bit of sleep, so I'm ready, you know, firing on all cylinders,

0:41:04 > 0:41:07to go hard at it again tomorrow morning.

0:41:15 > 0:41:17It's the morning of the final day.

0:41:17 > 0:41:19Later on, the judges and the homeowners will see

0:41:19 > 0:41:21the finished rooms, and what they think of them

0:41:21 > 0:41:26will determine which designer gets through to the quarterfinals

0:41:26 > 0:41:28and which one leaves the competition for good.

0:41:28 > 0:41:30There's just hours left for them

0:41:30 > 0:41:34to convince the judges that they deserve to be a quarterfinalist.

0:41:34 > 0:41:37I didn't get a real lot of sleep last night so, you know,

0:41:37 > 0:41:40the start of day three's proving to be a little bit of a killer.

0:41:40 > 0:41:41I will nail it.

0:41:41 > 0:41:45I haven't nailed it yet, but in the next few hours, I will.

0:41:47 > 0:41:49Lucy's finally painted the bed

0:41:49 > 0:41:52but there are still the intricate wardrobe panels to finish...

0:41:52 > 0:41:55I need to do this in about half an hour.

0:41:55 > 0:41:59It's got to be right, so, yeah, it is a lot of work.

0:41:59 > 0:42:02..but she's easily distracted.

0:42:02 > 0:42:05How about if we move the wardrobe up near the window?

0:42:05 > 0:42:07No, cos then the...

0:42:07 > 0:42:09I think you need to get things finished first,

0:42:09 > 0:42:12and then arrange the furniture, personally. Do you? Yeah.

0:42:12 > 0:42:14There's no holding her back.

0:42:14 > 0:42:15Dickie, I'm sorry.

0:42:15 > 0:42:19Just give me two minutes, cos I'm a monster.

0:42:19 > 0:42:22Just grab it. I'll probably swap them back again.

0:42:22 > 0:42:24Yeah, I expect you will. Get off.

0:42:24 > 0:42:28Sorry. You can punch me. HE LAUGHS

0:42:28 > 0:42:31Lucy seems to be her usual whirling dervish of creativity.

0:42:31 > 0:42:33That's kind of how she operates -

0:42:33 > 0:42:35firing commands to her team, left, right and centre,

0:42:35 > 0:42:38and they're all just chasing to keep up with her.

0:42:39 > 0:42:41Oh, you're going to like these.

0:42:41 > 0:42:43She's already onto the next task -

0:42:43 > 0:42:47adding character to some plain, shop-bought curtains.

0:42:47 > 0:42:51I've made these borders with hand-embroidery,

0:42:51 > 0:42:55cos I like the idea of the handmade in this room,

0:42:55 > 0:42:58and, erm, it's sort of a folk... It gives it a folk element.

0:42:58 > 0:43:03It's felt. It's all recycled materials.

0:43:03 > 0:43:06But this 11th-hour make is proving tricky.

0:43:06 > 0:43:10It's just the way of doing things like this - it's horrid.

0:43:17 > 0:43:20Over at Rob's, a different kind of drama is shaping up.

0:43:20 > 0:43:22I've glued my...my Bat-light,

0:43:22 > 0:43:25and I've assembled that, so I can...

0:43:25 > 0:43:26I can tick that off as well.

0:43:28 > 0:43:30Erm, you know, I'm mindful of time.

0:43:30 > 0:43:32I've kind of got less than two hours,

0:43:32 > 0:43:34so, you know, there's quite a bit of doing.

0:43:34 > 0:43:37Like building the bed - if he can get it in.

0:43:37 > 0:43:40Up a bit more, yeah. Oh!

0:43:40 > 0:43:42Yeah, this side can just go as is.

0:43:42 > 0:43:44DRILL BUZZES With all the pieces together,

0:43:44 > 0:43:47the battle to build the Bat-bed begins.

0:43:47 > 0:43:49We've got 48 minutes.

0:43:52 > 0:43:55It's a complete madhouse in Rob's room.

0:43:55 > 0:43:56I know. He's finally broken.

0:43:56 > 0:43:58He's been so cool, calm and collected,

0:43:58 > 0:44:01and we've been seeing all this stuff that he's making in the garden,

0:44:01 > 0:44:03that he's got to cram into this little room,

0:44:03 > 0:44:06and the pressure has definitely got the better of him.

0:44:08 > 0:44:11With both designers working to wildly different briefs...

0:44:11 > 0:44:14Two screws up there.

0:44:14 > 0:44:16..the judges will compare their creativity by seeing how well

0:44:16 > 0:44:20they transform junk into a stand-alone product.

0:44:20 > 0:44:22Wow. That's my upcycle.

0:44:22 > 0:44:25And hopefully it's a good indication of, maybe,

0:44:25 > 0:44:27how my mind kind of works.

0:44:27 > 0:44:30'A win here will strengthen their chances of securing

0:44:30 > 0:44:33'a place in the quarterfinal.'

0:44:33 > 0:44:35Now, this is what I call a challenge.

0:44:35 > 0:44:37This looks fantastic. LAUGHTER

0:44:37 > 0:44:39This is Lucy's, and you can see she's got

0:44:39 > 0:44:42a collection of side tables, which she's stacked together.

0:44:42 > 0:44:45This one got painted blue, and then we've got a little lamp on the top.

0:44:45 > 0:44:48I notice that's stuck on with Blu Tack...

0:44:48 > 0:44:52Oh. ..so I question the construction values.

0:44:52 > 0:44:54Yeah, but in 90 minutes, the concept is brilliant.

0:44:54 > 0:44:58So, from the sublime... to, what is this?

0:44:58 > 0:45:00It's the sort of thing you'd see at a festival, isn't it?

0:45:00 > 0:45:03This is designed to go in one of these big, loft-style apartments,

0:45:03 > 0:45:06cos obviously this isn't going to fit into your average semi.

0:45:06 > 0:45:09It's kind of quirky. I love the way that the yellows tie together,

0:45:09 > 0:45:12so he's thought of it visually tying in. And gold handlebars.

0:45:12 > 0:45:15It's fun and it's got humour and it's very now.

0:45:19 > 0:45:21'The judges now have to make a unanimous decision

0:45:21 > 0:45:25'on which of these pieces shows the most creativity.'

0:45:25 > 0:45:28We did ask them to come up with a finished product,

0:45:28 > 0:45:30and I think this is a little bit more sophisticated.

0:45:30 > 0:45:32I think they both are absolutely fun.

0:45:32 > 0:45:35I love them but I think this is going to be the winner.

0:45:35 > 0:45:37Rob is in a strong position,

0:45:37 > 0:45:38having won both this challenge

0:45:38 > 0:45:41and the client presentation judging earlier on,

0:45:41 > 0:45:45but Lucy could still overtake him if her room scheme outshines his...

0:45:51 > 0:45:55..and she's determined to show she has learned from past mistakes.

0:45:55 > 0:45:57God, that's gorgeous.

0:45:57 > 0:46:00Choosing the right number of items to display

0:46:00 > 0:46:03from her homeowner's Scandinavian artefacts.

0:46:03 > 0:46:07I've got to be so careful not to overcrowd the space

0:46:07 > 0:46:10when I finish, cos there's so much stuff,

0:46:10 > 0:46:11so I just want a few...

0:46:11 > 0:46:14Maybe just, like, four things like that.

0:46:17 > 0:46:20She may be learning restraint...

0:46:20 > 0:46:23Dick, can you put these here?

0:46:23 > 0:46:26..but, having spent three days and ?1,000,

0:46:26 > 0:46:29things are as chaotic as ever.

0:46:29 > 0:46:32Oh, my Godfathers!

0:46:32 > 0:46:36After struggling to balance authenticity with practicality

0:46:36 > 0:46:40earlier on, Lucy is being risky adding more modern lighting...

0:46:40 > 0:46:42Did you say? Did you want it up or down? Up!

0:46:42 > 0:46:45..and a ?95 rocking chair.

0:46:45 > 0:46:48Look, you just get a bit of that. It's white emulsion.

0:46:49 > 0:46:52Don't overcrowd the scheme.

0:47:02 > 0:47:06It's been a long time since I've done anything like this,

0:47:06 > 0:47:11and it's so tiring and overwhelming but so good.

0:47:11 > 0:47:13Lucy's brief was to create a traditional,

0:47:13 > 0:47:15Swedish country-style scheme.

0:47:17 > 0:47:20Three days ago, the room was plain and unexciting.

0:47:29 > 0:47:32Now it's a cosy Swedish boudoir with charm.

0:47:34 > 0:47:38Lucy's designed a 19th-century-style Scandinavian box-bed

0:47:38 > 0:47:40with built-in storage.

0:47:40 > 0:47:42She's gone for a traditional folk theme,

0:47:42 > 0:47:44with hand-painted designs,

0:47:44 > 0:47:47curtain trim and rug,

0:47:47 > 0:47:50balancing those with contemporary touches.

0:47:50 > 0:47:54The homeowner wanted a Swedish country-style bedroom.

0:47:54 > 0:47:58In the time, yeah, I think I nailed it.

0:47:58 > 0:48:00DOOR OPENS

0:48:03 > 0:48:05There's a real feeling of magic in this room.

0:48:05 > 0:48:06That's my first impression.

0:48:06 > 0:48:08I would love the idea of sleeping in this bed.

0:48:08 > 0:48:11Mmm! It feels really cosy, and in the winter,

0:48:11 > 0:48:13if it had some curtains behind it that you could draw across,

0:48:13 > 0:48:15it'd be lovely. Very romantic.

0:48:15 > 0:48:16What is great is the fact that

0:48:16 > 0:48:18you're seeing the graining of the word,

0:48:18 > 0:48:22rather than some flat MDF and... Which is here, though,

0:48:22 > 0:48:25but I think she's managed to blend the old wood and the new wood

0:48:25 > 0:48:27in together quite well. Yeah.

0:48:27 > 0:48:29What's letting it down for me is the patterns in the panels.

0:48:29 > 0:48:33It just looks a bit like she's done it with a dry, flat brush.

0:48:33 > 0:48:35But I think it's supposed to look very handmade, quite folksy,

0:48:35 > 0:48:37quite humble.

0:48:37 > 0:48:39She's got the colours absolutely spot on,

0:48:39 > 0:48:43because she's got the blues and she's got that lovely rusty red.

0:48:43 > 0:48:45One of the many details in here that I've spotted

0:48:45 > 0:48:48that I really love is the treatment of the curtains,

0:48:48 > 0:48:50which really enhances, I think, this folksy theme.

0:48:50 > 0:48:53But I think I would have been a little bit more generous with it,

0:48:53 > 0:48:55and maybe taken that lovely detail at the bottom

0:48:55 > 0:48:58and put it up higher so you could see it.

0:48:58 > 0:49:00I think she's gone to a lot of effort to authentically

0:49:00 > 0:49:02distress everything to look antique,

0:49:02 > 0:49:05but then we've got a very modern, flat-pack rocking chair in there.

0:49:05 > 0:49:08Yeah, but it's got the right shape, which I like, and I also like

0:49:08 > 0:49:11the fact that there is the element of contemporary in the room.

0:49:11 > 0:49:12This is what I love about this, you know.

0:49:12 > 0:49:15There are times when you just think it's just total madness,

0:49:15 > 0:49:17and everything's random, and you're looking here,

0:49:17 > 0:49:20and there's method in the madness. It's all here.

0:49:20 > 0:49:23The concern with Lucy was she might overcrowd this room -

0:49:23 > 0:49:24put too much stuff in it -

0:49:24 > 0:49:26and in a small space like this, especially a guest room,

0:49:26 > 0:49:29there needs to be an element of serenity,

0:49:29 > 0:49:32and I think she's just about got that right.

0:49:35 > 0:49:38I think the homeowner is going to love it, actually.

0:49:38 > 0:49:40I think it's what she is after.

0:49:40 > 0:49:43I might be completely wrong. I hope not.

0:49:43 > 0:49:46Come on in. Your new guest bedroom.

0:49:46 > 0:49:48Oh, my goodness, what a bed!

0:49:48 > 0:49:49Well, you can't miss the bed.

0:49:49 > 0:49:53No, I mean, I wanted it to be the focus, and look at it.

0:49:53 > 0:49:56And then the curtains - absolutely lovely, aren't they?

0:49:56 > 0:49:58And then this chair is so much better than

0:49:58 > 0:50:00the one that was in here.

0:50:00 > 0:50:02Do you think she's come up to scratch? Yeah.

0:50:02 > 0:50:04I'm really, really pleased.

0:50:07 > 0:50:10Rob's time is nearly up and he's still got lots to bring in...

0:50:10 > 0:50:13We have about... It says 15 minutes. ..18 minutes.

0:50:13 > 0:50:17We've got to bring the unit in, two lamps and the trunk. What?

0:50:17 > 0:50:19Ooh!

0:50:19 > 0:50:21..but there's trouble with the toy box.

0:50:21 > 0:50:24Oh.

0:50:24 > 0:50:26Erm... Oh!

0:50:26 > 0:50:28All right, if you turn that way, Dave.

0:50:28 > 0:50:31Yes. Oh, yes! Hallelujah.

0:50:31 > 0:50:33MAN GRUNTS

0:50:33 > 0:50:35After compromising his dark scheme

0:50:35 > 0:50:37on his client's wishes earlier on... HE BLOWS AIR

0:50:37 > 0:50:41..Rob must balance the grey walls with moody lights.

0:50:41 > 0:50:43Yeah, all right.

0:50:43 > 0:50:44Looking good.

0:50:49 > 0:50:51I'm... I'm really chuffed with the room.

0:50:51 > 0:50:54It's... It's all, kind of, really just come together at

0:50:54 > 0:50:56well and truly the 11th hour.

0:50:58 > 0:51:01Rob was asked to create a Batman-inspired fantasy den

0:51:01 > 0:51:03for a seven-year-old.

0:51:03 > 0:51:06Before, the room looked small and over-cluttered.

0:51:15 > 0:51:18Now Rob's designed an adventurous den

0:51:18 > 0:51:21with a bed fit for a caped crusader.

0:51:21 > 0:51:23He's turned the walls dark grey,

0:51:23 > 0:51:25with one lighter grey to contrast a cityscape.

0:51:27 > 0:51:30He's brightened things up with yellow storage,

0:51:30 > 0:51:32atmospheric lighting with LED lights,

0:51:32 > 0:51:34a bat motif,

0:51:34 > 0:51:37plus other bespoke pieces.

0:51:37 > 0:51:41Finally, there's a secret compartment fit for a superhero.

0:51:41 > 0:51:43I'm actually most worried about two things,

0:51:43 > 0:51:46one of which is... is the reaction of...of James,

0:51:46 > 0:51:49but I do need the judges to... to like it as well.

0:51:49 > 0:51:52Oh. Oh!

0:51:52 > 0:51:53Oh, what a little den, eh?

0:51:53 > 0:51:56It's a Batcave and it's just what they asked for. Yeah.

0:51:56 > 0:51:58Isn't that ingenious? It's really clever.

0:51:58 > 0:52:00Yeah, and it's nice that he's used real wheels,

0:52:00 > 0:52:02cos that feels a little bit more grown-up

0:52:02 > 0:52:04than just a painted bed. Yeah.

0:52:04 > 0:52:06I'm really glad he kept this darker colour on the walls

0:52:06 > 0:52:10because it means that his lighting is looking really super.

0:52:10 > 0:52:12Absolutely, and he's cleverly closed the blinds,

0:52:12 > 0:52:14so it gives it more of an atmosphere in here.

0:52:14 > 0:52:17Yeah, and that allows him to show off all his lighting effects,

0:52:17 > 0:52:20although I am questioning whether there's enough lighting in here,

0:52:20 > 0:52:23because you don't want it to feel dark and gloomy all the time.

0:52:23 > 0:52:24But it does look really good.

0:52:24 > 0:52:27I have got a bugbear, though. Oh, what's that? These toy boxes.

0:52:27 > 0:52:32They're really large and they just are a place for kids to shove stuff,

0:52:32 > 0:52:34and if you want something that's at the bottom,

0:52:34 > 0:52:37you're going to have to empty the whole thing on the floor. Oh, yeah.

0:52:37 > 0:52:40I just don't think they're very practical.

0:52:40 > 0:52:43And that's a secret cupboard where grown-ups can't get in it.

0:52:43 > 0:52:45Oh, yeah, and voila, look at that!

0:52:45 > 0:52:48Keep all your secret bits and bobs in there. Perfect.

0:52:48 > 0:52:51This clearly shows that Rob can pull off a whole cohesive scheme.

0:52:51 > 0:52:54Mm. I think by matching all the fitted furniture and the bed,

0:52:54 > 0:52:57in the black, going for the grey all the way around the room,

0:52:57 > 0:53:00and then just having final, sort of, feature lighting and, you know,

0:53:00 > 0:53:02a few quirky product designs,

0:53:02 > 0:53:04it's just enough to make it interesting.

0:53:04 > 0:53:08But it is like putting a jigsaw puzzle together, and he,

0:53:08 > 0:53:10I think, was a little scared at times, but has pulled it together.

0:53:12 > 0:53:17And, overall, the room that I've delivered, I think it is, you know,

0:53:17 > 0:53:20a nice, cohesive space for, you know, a child to be in,

0:53:20 > 0:53:22and I want him to love it, really.

0:53:25 > 0:53:29BOY GASPS Wowzers!

0:53:29 > 0:53:30You wanted a Batcave. Yes!

0:53:30 > 0:53:32You've got a Batcave.

0:53:32 > 0:53:36It's the most coolest bed I ever seen in my life!

0:53:36 > 0:53:38Yeah! What do you think? What do you think?

0:53:38 > 0:53:39There's a bat up there. Yeah.

0:53:39 > 0:53:40There's a bat above you here. Yes.

0:53:40 > 0:53:42Is it batty enough? Yes.

0:53:42 > 0:53:44Rob's got that right, yeah?

0:53:44 > 0:53:45Yay!

0:53:45 > 0:53:47What do you think your mum might think of it?

0:53:47 > 0:53:50It would be...smashing.

0:53:50 > 0:53:52There you go, double thumbs up for Rob.

0:53:52 > 0:53:55Oh, yeah! TOM GIGGLES

0:53:55 > 0:53:57You look nice.

0:53:57 > 0:54:00You've got a different outfit... With both rooms scrutinised,

0:54:00 > 0:54:02all the designers can do is wait. Oh, are you all right?

0:54:02 > 0:54:04How did it get on? Yeah, well, it's done, isn't it?

0:54:04 > 0:54:06Yeah, yeah, done. Now I'm pleased.

0:54:06 > 0:54:08'If the judges let me go through to the next round,'

0:54:08 > 0:54:11I will be ecstatically proud and happy,

0:54:11 > 0:54:15and just, yeah, amazed and really chuffed.

0:54:15 > 0:54:17I was pleased with it but I think

0:54:17 > 0:54:19yours was good. Have you got a picture of it or anything?

0:54:19 > 0:54:21'I hope that I do get through.

0:54:21 > 0:54:23'You know, I really do, but I'm as confident as I can be,'

0:54:23 > 0:54:25and I'm going to go in there,

0:54:25 > 0:54:27you know, with a brave face on and...

0:54:27 > 0:54:29and, you know, await the judgment.

0:54:30 > 0:54:33I mean, terrifically difficult rooms this time.

0:54:33 > 0:54:35I mean, they're all higgledy-piggledy with beams

0:54:35 > 0:54:38everywhere. There're dark. They've got creaky floorboards.

0:54:38 > 0:54:40And throw in a heat wave in the middle of it all as well.

0:54:40 > 0:54:42Now, Rob's always been a really good product designer,

0:54:42 > 0:54:45but you wanted to see a really coherent, cohesive scheme from him.

0:54:45 > 0:54:47Did you see it? Yeah, I think he's achieved it.

0:54:47 > 0:54:49Well, he caught the atmosphere, didn't he?

0:54:49 > 0:54:52I mean, he had a little bit of a wrangle with the homeowner about

0:54:52 > 0:54:54the depth of grey that he was going to put on the walls,

0:54:54 > 0:54:57and we're just really pleased to see that he stuck by his guns.

0:54:57 > 0:54:59How do you think he's progressed throughout the rounds?

0:54:59 > 0:55:00Massively. Wouldn't you agree?

0:55:00 > 0:55:03Well, he's consistently good at being inventive,

0:55:03 > 0:55:06and making wonderful and interesting things.

0:55:06 > 0:55:08As you can imagine, his young client adored it.

0:55:08 > 0:55:11He loved the bats! I'm a bit worried about the homeowner, though.

0:55:11 > 0:55:14She'll never, ever get him to go to sleep in that room, you know that?

0:55:14 > 0:55:16Now, what did you think of Lucy's scheme,

0:55:16 > 0:55:19after all that creative chaos that she always seems to go through?

0:55:19 > 0:55:21We were both really impressed, because, not only has

0:55:21 > 0:55:26she taken the homeowner's brief on board, and done it really well,

0:55:26 > 0:55:29but she's just shown that extra little bit of style too.

0:55:29 > 0:55:33And I think she's really reined it in to just the right level.

0:55:33 > 0:55:37She had a very precise brief, though - 1830s Scandinavia.

0:55:37 > 0:55:41Well, this is where Lucy shows us quite how versatile she is.

0:55:41 > 0:55:44She can do everything from futuristic all the way to

0:55:44 > 0:55:46something that's a very, kind of, antique look.

0:55:46 > 0:55:49And she did it, also, for a very exacting client.

0:55:49 > 0:55:50I mean, she loved it.

0:55:50 > 0:55:54She loved, you know, both her take on the Scandinavian style,

0:55:54 > 0:55:55but she also liked those little

0:55:55 > 0:55:58contemporary, different touches as well. Great.

0:55:58 > 0:56:03So, this time, you've got two very creative designers.

0:56:03 > 0:56:05How are you going to sort the wheat from the chaff?

0:56:05 > 0:56:07They're all wheat. There's no chaff.

0:56:07 > 0:56:10It's going to be very difficult to make a decision between the two.

0:56:13 > 0:56:15'There's only room for one of these amateur designers

0:56:15 > 0:56:17'in the quarterfinal.

0:56:17 > 0:56:19'After Rob's two successes earlier,

0:56:19 > 0:56:22'has Lucy done enough to overtake him?'

0:56:22 > 0:56:25For many people, living in a beautiful medieval cottage

0:56:25 > 0:56:27is their idea of heaven,

0:56:27 > 0:56:29but it takes some skill to make sense of

0:56:29 > 0:56:31those higgledy-piggledy rooms, and you two have done it.

0:56:31 > 0:56:34And you both completely nailed your briefs.

0:56:34 > 0:56:36I mean, who would have thought that we'd have a

0:56:36 > 0:56:39folksy Scandinavian guest bedroom

0:56:39 > 0:56:43and a Batcave hidden behind these chocolate-box exteriors?

0:56:43 > 0:56:46As a result, we've found it quite heartbreaking

0:56:46 > 0:56:48having to make a decision.

0:56:48 > 0:56:51The judges, though, have made their tough decision

0:56:51 > 0:56:57and the designer going through to the quarterfinals is...

0:57:00 > 0:57:03..Lucy.

0:57:03 > 0:57:04Well done.

0:57:04 > 0:57:07Yeah, well done, yeah. Congratulations. Thank you.

0:57:07 > 0:57:10No, no, I'm really happy for you. Thank you. No, I am.

0:57:10 > 0:57:13I'm pretty gutted, really, to be going. You know, the...

0:57:13 > 0:57:17'Just the sheer amount of work that I've put in.'

0:57:17 > 0:57:19A lot of effort, a lot of, you know, blood, sweat and tears.

0:57:19 > 0:57:22Well done, Lucy. Thank you. It was brilliant, and it was a fine line.

0:57:22 > 0:57:24'I am so disappointed to lose Rob.'

0:57:24 > 0:57:26He is such an exciting designer and he's good.

0:57:26 > 0:57:29Look, he won the presentation judging and the challenge,

0:57:29 > 0:57:31'but he was up against Lucy,

0:57:31 > 0:57:34'and her room was close to perfection,

0:57:34 > 0:57:36'and that's why she's the designer going through.'

0:57:36 > 0:57:38Thank you. DANIEL LAUGHS

0:57:38 > 0:57:41It was a very tough decision between the both of you. Thank you.

0:57:41 > 0:57:42You've both done really well.

0:57:42 > 0:57:44'Really, really surprised,'

0:57:44 > 0:57:47and ecstatic to go through to the next round.

0:57:47 > 0:57:49Oh, I just...

0:57:49 > 0:57:51Are you pleased? Absolutely.

0:57:51 > 0:57:53It's just so good. Oh...

0:57:53 > 0:57:55It's taking me so long,

0:57:55 > 0:57:57looking round and seeing all that you've done.

0:57:57 > 0:58:00Going forward, if Lucy maintains this level of perfection,

0:58:00 > 0:58:02she's one to watch.

0:58:02 > 0:58:04Oh, I've really enjoyed it. Thank you.

0:58:04 > 0:58:06It's daunting now,

0:58:06 > 0:58:09so, yeah, the ball's going to roll all over again.

0:58:11 > 0:58:14Next time, in Peak District country cottages,

0:58:14 > 0:58:17a brand-new set of four wannabe designers fight it out...

0:58:18 > 0:58:20Good job!

0:58:20 > 0:58:22..for three places in the next round.

0:58:22 > 0:58:25The designer going home is...

0:58:57 > 0:58:58It's Biscuit Week.

0:58:58 > 0:59:00Must try not to drop them.

0:59:00 > 0:59:02It's going to be messy.
