0:00:02 > 0:00:04I'm constantly taken aback by the huge variety of property styles

0:00:04 > 0:00:07in Britain, from characterful timber-framed cottages

0:00:07 > 0:00:10to grand townhouses.

0:00:10 > 0:00:13But sometimes the insides don't live up

0:00:13 > 0:00:15to the expectations on the outside.

0:00:15 > 0:00:19So we've gathered together the most talented amateur interior designers

0:00:19 > 0:00:22who think they could be the next big thing, to show us how it's done.

0:00:22 > 0:00:24But it's not as easy as it looks.

0:00:24 > 0:00:26- Oh, no, I'm panicking. - GLASS SHATTERS

0:00:26 > 0:00:28It's a bit make-or-break, really.

0:00:28 > 0:00:32Across three knockout episodes, a group of designers will compete

0:00:32 > 0:00:34for one place in finals week.

0:00:34 > 0:00:36Oh, why isn't it easy?

0:00:36 > 0:00:39I just like to do things properly.

0:00:39 > 0:00:41Oh, that's...wonderful!

0:00:41 > 0:00:43Judging them, two industry experts.

0:00:43 > 0:00:45Daniel Hopwood...

0:00:45 > 0:00:49What I'm looking for is talent that can be nurtured.

0:00:49 > 0:00:50..and Sophie Robinson.

0:00:50 > 0:00:54I want the designers to impress me with their creativity.

0:00:54 > 0:00:56They'll be scrutinising presentation skills...

0:00:56 > 0:00:59That's not the way to present to somebody.

0:00:59 > 0:01:00..artistic flair...

0:01:00 > 0:01:03- Have you ever seen that done before? - No. It's weird.

0:01:03 > 0:01:06..and how well they deliver their brief.

0:01:06 > 0:01:08Pretty amazing transformation.

0:01:08 > 0:01:10Absolutely beautiful.

0:01:10 > 0:01:13In the finals, the best will face giants of the design world.

0:01:13 > 0:01:16- Oliver Heath... - Oh, my word!

0:01:16 > 0:01:17..Orla Kiely...

0:01:17 > 0:01:18It does look quite rough.

0:01:18 > 0:01:20..and Kelly Hoppen.

0:01:20 > 0:01:21I want perfection!

0:01:22 > 0:01:24But only one can be crowned winner of

0:01:24 > 0:01:27The Great Interior Design Challenge.

0:01:32 > 0:01:36In this brand-new heat, four old-fashioned rooms

0:01:36 > 0:01:40with frayed edges and exacting clients.

0:01:42 > 0:01:46This time, our amateurs will be updating a cosy sitting room each

0:01:46 > 0:01:49in these picture-postcard cottages in the Peak District.

0:01:51 > 0:01:53Our four designers have their own looks.

0:01:53 > 0:01:55Industrial salvage.

0:01:55 > 0:01:56Shabby classic.

0:01:56 > 0:01:58Eclectic.

0:01:58 > 0:01:59Rich in emotion.

0:01:59 > 0:02:02But working for a client will be a new challenge...

0:02:02 > 0:02:06It's hard to visualise what she's trying to achieve with the room.

0:02:06 > 0:02:10..as they battle to keep their place in the competition.

0:02:10 > 0:02:12Everything does kind of match.

0:02:12 > 0:02:14Slightly rubs me up the wrong way.

0:02:14 > 0:02:17There are really some quite mad, left-field things going on in this room.

0:02:17 > 0:02:19Because one must go.

0:02:20 > 0:02:24The designer going home this time is...

0:02:29 > 0:02:32This design battle is taking place in one of the most beautiful

0:02:32 > 0:02:35places in the country.

0:02:35 > 0:02:38The Peak District was the first bit of Britain to be designated

0:02:38 > 0:02:41a national park, protecting its incredible landscape

0:02:41 > 0:02:43and pretty stone villages,

0:02:43 > 0:02:46and it is places like Tissington that show you exactly why.

0:02:46 > 0:02:49This quintessentially English spot comes complete with its own

0:02:49 > 0:02:53duck pond and babbling brook, its 17th-century manor house

0:02:53 > 0:02:58and a smattering of stone cottages draped over the landscape.

0:02:58 > 0:03:01Inside, these modest but homely workers' cottages are about to

0:03:01 > 0:03:05get a new-look living room from our designers.

0:03:12 > 0:03:16- Five litres for these walls. - OK.- 2.5 for that one.

0:03:16 > 0:03:18The designers have been prepping for a week,

0:03:18 > 0:03:20working to a brief from their client.

0:03:20 > 0:03:23I've never kind of looked into this kind of style before, but

0:03:23 > 0:03:26when I've kind of looked into it, it is kind of what I've got at home.

0:03:26 > 0:03:29Let's do the clean, and if we have time, we can panel.

0:03:29 > 0:03:32I haven't slept a wink last night because of being so nervous,

0:03:32 > 0:03:34but also excited.

0:03:34 > 0:03:36They've each got a small team to help them,

0:03:36 > 0:03:38including a builder and a decorator.

0:03:38 > 0:03:40Take them off and make some fresh ones.

0:03:40 > 0:03:43'I loved the brief, and the home owner,'

0:03:43 > 0:03:47I really think he is going to love it. I'm excited.

0:03:47 > 0:03:51They also have a budget of £1,000 and three days.

0:03:51 > 0:03:54The artwork is going to look amazing on this colour.

0:03:54 > 0:03:58I'm really excited about creating a new room for the homeowner.

0:04:00 > 0:04:03First up is 42-year-old art director Rachel,

0:04:03 > 0:04:07whose home in Leeds makes quite an impact.

0:04:07 > 0:04:10I like to mix bold colour

0:04:10 > 0:04:14with a kind of rough and ready lived-in feel.

0:04:14 > 0:04:18Kind of liken it to wearing a silk bow tie with a creased

0:04:18 > 0:04:21denim shirt for a wedding.

0:04:21 > 0:04:24The room Rachel is working on was a simple but rather plain living

0:04:24 > 0:04:29room, which judges Sophie and Daniel checked out before Rachel got going.

0:04:29 > 0:04:34I know the homeowner thinks this room is quite cold and gloomy.

0:04:34 > 0:04:39Well, it's magnolia, isn't it? So, yes, it is pretty bland.

0:04:39 > 0:04:42Rachel has been asked to replace bland with warm

0:04:42 > 0:04:44and cosy country style.

0:04:44 > 0:04:46The temptation would be to put something quite

0:04:46 > 0:04:48dark on the walls, but I think with a room this size,

0:04:48 > 0:04:52with quite a small window, it could feel gloomy quite quickly.

0:04:52 > 0:04:55Well, Rachel has been tempted to go dark,

0:04:55 > 0:04:56as her take on a cosy cottage

0:04:56 > 0:04:59includes deep red walls and tartan fabrics,

0:04:59 > 0:05:04which she had to run by her client, Karen, before work started.

0:05:04 > 0:05:08Okey dokey, this is my mood board for your room.

0:05:08 > 0:05:10Pitching to her first ever client is tough,

0:05:10 > 0:05:14but what Rachel doesn't know yet is that the judges will rank all

0:05:14 > 0:05:18the designers according to how well they present their ideas.

0:05:18 > 0:05:21For the walls, I want to paint it this kind of sludgy red.

0:05:21 > 0:05:25That's going to create a real den-like room.

0:05:25 > 0:05:29I'd like to paint your bureau this colour. How do you feel about that?

0:05:29 > 0:05:33- Right.- What do you think?

0:05:33 > 0:05:37- Oh. Ah.- Are you a bit nervous about that?- Yeah, yeah. Um...

0:05:37 > 0:05:40- OK.- When you talked about this fabric,

0:05:40 > 0:05:42where are you going to use this?

0:05:42 > 0:05:47- On the curtains.- Oh, really. Oh, that's exciting.- That's my...

0:05:47 > 0:05:50- That's my most exciting bit, actually.- Yeah.

0:05:50 > 0:05:52One thing I can say about Rachel's presentation is

0:05:52 > 0:05:55I can really see what that room is going to look like.

0:05:55 > 0:05:57I think it is just so safe.

0:05:57 > 0:06:01Rachel is an urban girl, and she's not really getting the country

0:06:01 > 0:06:05vibe, so what she is giving us is tear sheet, country interior design.

0:06:07 > 0:06:10Blissfully unaware, Rachel cracks on.

0:06:10 > 0:06:11I try to be organised but

0:06:11 > 0:06:15because sometimes my thoughts are a bit like this, I have to get them

0:06:15 > 0:06:18down so I can remember what I've got to do and put them in order.

0:06:18 > 0:06:22She's spent a fifth of her budget on some fabric for curtains,

0:06:22 > 0:06:25and with so much at stake, it's got her worried.

0:06:25 > 0:06:29Stressing last night about getting it cut to size.

0:06:29 > 0:06:31It's psychological. I'm feeling like

0:06:31 > 0:06:35if I get these measured out, I'll be able to sleep tonight.

0:06:35 > 0:06:36SHE LAUGHS

0:06:39 > 0:06:41The fabric at the top of the eyelet,

0:06:41 > 0:06:43just take that off and sewing it over,

0:06:43 > 0:06:46so it is just the top of the metal eyelet for the curtains.

0:06:46 > 0:06:49Our second designer is 21-year-old sales assistant

0:06:49 > 0:06:51Jamie from County Durham.

0:06:51 > 0:06:54The thing I love most about interior design is kind of creating

0:06:54 > 0:06:57a positive space. Everyone should love to come home.

0:06:57 > 0:07:01It needs to be a place where happy memories can be made.

0:07:01 > 0:07:05Jamie has been asked to update what was a rather cluttered living room.

0:07:05 > 0:07:09- This room has got bags of style and character.- Completely.

0:07:09 > 0:07:11I think you need to get rid of some of the modernity in this room.

0:07:11 > 0:07:13For example, those shelves over there, which is

0:07:13 > 0:07:17- killing the character and the space. - Jamie's clients agree.

0:07:17 > 0:07:20As they've asked him to give the room some traditional, rustic,

0:07:20 > 0:07:22Scandinavian style.

0:07:22 > 0:07:25So the key, really, is to actually just embrace the traditional

0:07:25 > 0:07:30elements of this room, and no modern touches at all, it just looks wrong.

0:07:30 > 0:07:32But Jamie thinks differently,

0:07:32 > 0:07:34as his take on traditional Scandinavian includes

0:07:34 > 0:07:37cool grey walls and cutting edge shelving,

0:07:37 > 0:07:39which he had to get approval for

0:07:39 > 0:07:41from his clients, Annie and Ed, earlier on.

0:07:41 > 0:07:45The colours for the room, kind of looking at Scandinavian.

0:07:45 > 0:07:49So I wanted to pick some light kind of colours but warm as well, to kind of keep it cosy.

0:07:49 > 0:07:52It is similar to what my home is at the moment.

0:07:52 > 0:07:55There's going to be a little collection of tables that I'm going to make out of little logs,

0:07:55 > 0:07:58- which are going to have the accent colours.- Love it.

0:07:58 > 0:08:00For the storage, these little boxes.

0:08:00 > 0:08:04It's slightly more modern than we had in our...

0:08:04 > 0:08:06certainly in my head.

0:08:06 > 0:08:11- But it's not chrome and glass.- Yeah. - Look forward to it all being ready.

0:08:11 > 0:08:14I know. I might want to move in myself.

0:08:14 > 0:08:16- THEY LAUGH - Putting this all together.

0:08:16 > 0:08:19What the brief was, was traditional Scandinavian,

0:08:19 > 0:08:22and he didn't read the word "traditional".

0:08:22 > 0:08:25No, he wasn't listening to what his homeowners need or what they asked for.

0:08:25 > 0:08:29He was designing for himself, he even went as far as to say,

0:08:29 > 0:08:32"This is the look I would create for myself."

0:08:33 > 0:08:36But Jamie thinks he's hit the mark.

0:08:36 > 0:08:39The homeowners seem to love what I've had put on the mood board

0:08:39 > 0:08:42and the designs I put forward. Yeah, it went really well.

0:08:42 > 0:08:48It has elements of the modernity that I wasn't totally...

0:08:48 > 0:08:50- Expecting.- Expecting, I suppose.

0:08:51 > 0:08:54With work under way, Jamie needs the room clear,

0:08:54 > 0:08:58- but it seems the sofa doesn't want to leave.- No.

0:08:58 > 0:09:02Um. Having a bit of a struggle, cannot get it out of the room.

0:09:02 > 0:09:05- First they try the front door... - No, not that way.- No.

0:09:05 > 0:09:07..then the back door.

0:09:09 > 0:09:11But his team have a suggestion.

0:09:11 > 0:09:14OK, you've got a log burner in there.

0:09:14 > 0:09:17THEY LAUGH

0:09:20 > 0:09:23If I talk to you about painting first,

0:09:23 > 0:09:25and then we'll go on to all the carpentry work.

0:09:25 > 0:09:30Our third amateur is 41-year-old garden designer Sarah from Hove.

0:09:30 > 0:09:33Gardens, you are designing them to grow

0:09:33 > 0:09:36and they will come to life over years.

0:09:36 > 0:09:39Interior design, for me, once you've done the room, it is

0:09:39 > 0:09:43there instantly, you're not waiting for something to evolve

0:09:43 > 0:09:47and grow, although my interiors tend to do that as well.

0:09:47 > 0:09:50The room Sarah is working in was a room of two halves,

0:09:50 > 0:09:52with a main living area and an annexe at the end.

0:09:54 > 0:09:56Oh, this is gorgeous, isn't it?

0:09:56 > 0:09:59It has to be. You've got the wood burner, lovely pale grey walls.

0:09:59 > 0:10:02- A few beams. - There is a but.

0:10:02 > 0:10:05- This hasn't been done. - And this is unfinished.

0:10:05 > 0:10:09Sarah has been given the task of bringing these two spaces together.

0:10:09 > 0:10:12As I understand it, these different areas have got different purposes.

0:10:12 > 0:10:15This is going to be like a reading area, book nook.

0:10:15 > 0:10:16Whereas this is the main living space.

0:10:16 > 0:10:21Because you've got a bit of a wall between it, you can decorate it slightly differently,

0:10:21 > 0:10:25and our fear always is never to be too matchy-matchy.

0:10:25 > 0:10:28- Although you are doing quite well. - SHE LAUGHS

0:10:28 > 0:10:30Sarah plans to use colour to unify the room,

0:10:30 > 0:10:33with different shades of green at each end,

0:10:33 > 0:10:37which she had to get the OK for from client David before work started.

0:10:37 > 0:10:41- Wow.- That's a good response to start with.

0:10:41 > 0:10:44- Oh, gosh.- So, in this room here, which is your main living room,

0:10:44 > 0:10:47I would like to paint it this colour, green.

0:10:47 > 0:10:49It is light, it is warm.

0:10:49 > 0:10:53The darker colour here is going to go into the snug reading room.

0:10:53 > 0:10:55- Wow. OK.- So, it is quite bold.

0:10:55 > 0:10:59The colours aren't something I would normally choose,

0:10:59 > 0:11:02so I'm going to take your guidance on this.

0:11:02 > 0:11:05All this green is pushing her client out of his comfort zone,

0:11:05 > 0:11:08and there's more to come on her soft furnishings.

0:11:09 > 0:11:13The fabrics that I've chosen, they have character,

0:11:13 > 0:11:16but they are really in keeping with this kind of property.

0:11:16 > 0:11:20- Right, fantastic.- 'There wasn't a very good layout plan.'

0:11:20 > 0:11:23It was hard to really visualise where pieces are going.

0:11:23 > 0:11:26You just can't see it on her presentation, and I actually can't see it in my head.

0:11:26 > 0:11:28What I love about Sarah's room is the way

0:11:28 > 0:11:30she has related the two spaces.

0:11:30 > 0:11:33She's got that soft green in one area, and in the other area,

0:11:33 > 0:11:36- that dark green.- Too much green for me, I'm afraid.

0:11:37 > 0:11:41Possibly too much green for the client as well.

0:11:41 > 0:11:44I have got some trepidation about doing this.

0:11:44 > 0:11:48Maybe the dark green might be a little bit of a leap of faith,

0:11:48 > 0:11:52but I'm pleased he's prepared to let me go with it.

0:11:53 > 0:11:54Before he can change his mind,

0:11:54 > 0:11:58Sarah is getting that green on the walls and the ceiling.

0:11:58 > 0:12:02What a gorgeous colour, he's going to love that.

0:12:02 > 0:12:04Fantastic. Good job.

0:12:05 > 0:12:07Good job. I like it.

0:12:12 > 0:12:15Just cutting some MDF into shapes and cutting this square canvas...

0:12:15 > 0:12:18- Yeah.- ..the other side of that.

0:12:18 > 0:12:20Our final designer is 41-year-old photographer

0:12:20 > 0:12:23and mum-of-three Lily from London.

0:12:23 > 0:12:28I think my style is homespun, touch of vintage, mismatched.

0:12:28 > 0:12:33And rich in emotion and texture.

0:12:33 > 0:12:37The room Lily is updating was a little worn around the edges.

0:12:37 > 0:12:41When you look around, you can see there's been some serious wear and tear.

0:12:41 > 0:12:45A couple of dogs, and they've certainly made their mark on this room.

0:12:45 > 0:12:46Lily has been asked to come up with

0:12:46 > 0:12:49a dog-friendly design in autumnal tones.

0:12:50 > 0:12:53There's got to be a very good, practical approach.

0:12:53 > 0:12:56The key thing in this room is just keeping it really simple.

0:12:56 > 0:12:59Lily, however, is doing anything but.

0:12:59 > 0:13:02Her autumnal design comes with decorative craft projects

0:13:02 > 0:13:07aplenty, including handmade frilly lampshade and petal-edged coffee table.

0:13:07 > 0:13:10Which she had to run past her clients, Simon and Xenia,

0:13:10 > 0:13:12before she could get started.

0:13:13 > 0:13:17These are the colours, and I wanted to bring in this

0:13:17 > 0:13:20really rich, warm wine burgundy red,

0:13:20 > 0:13:23and kind of a very subtle brown.

0:13:23 > 0:13:26Really beautiful blocks of colour layered together.

0:13:26 > 0:13:29The thing with having dark colours is it gives that

0:13:29 > 0:13:33illusion of being bigger, because the dark colours recede

0:13:33 > 0:13:35and they add depth to the room.

0:13:35 > 0:13:38Client Simon is a professional painter and decorator,

0:13:38 > 0:13:40so her next idea may be too much.

0:13:40 > 0:13:45The big thing is I want to paint the sofa and the armchair,

0:13:45 > 0:13:46if you'll let me.

0:13:46 > 0:13:49I'm not sure about painting the actual fabric, I have to say.

0:13:49 > 0:13:54- That does fill me with horror. And I really don't want to do that.- OK.

0:13:54 > 0:13:56I absolutely loved Lily's scheme.

0:13:56 > 0:13:58I mean, she did those beautiful boards,

0:13:58 > 0:14:01with all the kind of photomontage so I could really visualise it.

0:14:01 > 0:14:05If she just simplified her design, it could be really good.

0:14:05 > 0:14:08She's responded extremely really well to what we've asked for.

0:14:08 > 0:14:10I'm not worried about anything

0:14:10 > 0:14:13because I'm not going to let her paint my furniture.

0:14:13 > 0:14:16So, definitely no paint on Simon's sofa, but Lily

0:14:16 > 0:14:20does manage a small breakthrough with wife Xenia.

0:14:20 > 0:14:21I found this footstool.

0:14:21 > 0:14:25I've asked Xenia if I can paint it, and she said yes.

0:14:25 > 0:14:29Lily plans to give the stool three coats with red acrylic paint.

0:14:29 > 0:14:32It's very hard wearing. Kind of plasticky.

0:14:32 > 0:14:34But it also feels rubbery afterwards,

0:14:34 > 0:14:36so let's hope it works anyway.

0:14:41 > 0:14:43They've all started work, but our four

0:14:43 > 0:14:47designers are about to find out the judging has already begun.

0:14:47 > 0:14:52- I've just heard that the judges want to see you.- Right.

0:14:52 > 0:14:56I'm wondering what the judges are going to talk to us about.

0:14:56 > 0:14:58Let's see what they say.

0:14:58 > 0:15:00Apprehensive, I suppose.

0:15:00 > 0:15:03An important part of being an interior designer is

0:15:03 > 0:15:07communicating ideas, and so the judges are going to rank them

0:15:07 > 0:15:09on how well they briefed their clients.

0:15:09 > 0:15:13We are both going to drop a little bombshell for you right now,

0:15:13 > 0:15:14because we are here to judge you.

0:15:14 > 0:15:17But we are not going to judge you on your designs, we are

0:15:17 > 0:15:21here to judge you on how well you have presented your projects.

0:15:25 > 0:15:28Jamie, you had some lovely boards.

0:15:28 > 0:15:30And actually, they were very easy to read.

0:15:30 > 0:15:32One criticism, however, when you were presenting that project

0:15:32 > 0:15:36to your client, you kept relating it to your own home.

0:15:36 > 0:15:39As a professional designer, you are not an important person.

0:15:39 > 0:15:41Your client is the important person.

0:15:41 > 0:15:43No, I completely agree with your comment.

0:15:43 > 0:15:47Lily, we thought your presentation was an absolute visual feast,

0:15:47 > 0:15:49it really helped me see your room.

0:15:49 > 0:15:52I think, moving forward, be more confident,

0:15:52 > 0:15:55have faith in your ideas and sell them to the client.

0:15:55 > 0:15:59Rachel. Visually, fabulous.

0:15:59 > 0:16:03That board, I can completely understand it.

0:16:03 > 0:16:04Sarah, we thought your presentation

0:16:04 > 0:16:07could be a bit more visually enticing.

0:16:07 > 0:16:10What you were talking about sounded quite exciting, but what

0:16:10 > 0:16:14we looked at on the presentation board wasn't so exciting.

0:16:17 > 0:16:18The judges will be sending one designer

0:16:18 > 0:16:21home at the end of this project.

0:16:21 > 0:16:25And where they are ranked now will count towards that decision.

0:16:25 > 0:16:28- First place is Rachel. - Wow.

0:16:28 > 0:16:31In second place, Lily.

0:16:31 > 0:16:33In third place is Jamie.

0:16:33 > 0:16:37And in fourth place...is Sarah.

0:16:37 > 0:16:40'It is good to have feedback at this stage,'

0:16:40 > 0:16:44so I'm going to give it even more welly now, I think.

0:16:44 > 0:16:47So far, I'm in first place.

0:16:47 > 0:16:50- SHE LAUGHS - So that's exciting.

0:16:50 > 0:16:54- Well done, you.- So, let's do it. - Yeah! Great.- Yay!

0:16:59 > 0:17:02The current tenants here are getting a new look in just three days.

0:17:02 > 0:17:05But the village has been evolving for centuries.

0:17:05 > 0:17:08Like most of Britain before the Industrial Revolution,

0:17:08 > 0:17:11the landscape around here has been shaped by agriculture,

0:17:11 > 0:17:15tenant farmers renting plots from local landowners.

0:17:15 > 0:17:16Around Tissington, the land is very rocky,

0:17:16 > 0:17:20so it is only really good for sheep or dairy farmers, who would

0:17:20 > 0:17:22work for wealthy families like the Fitzherberts,

0:17:22 > 0:17:26who have dominated this village since the 15th century.

0:17:26 > 0:17:28The family made their most significant mark

0:17:28 > 0:17:32on the village in 1609 when they built Tissington Hall.

0:17:34 > 0:17:36It was designed to impress visitors of the family's wealth,

0:17:36 > 0:17:39using the very latest Jacobean architecture,

0:17:39 > 0:17:42including some newfangled classical columns for chimneys.

0:17:42 > 0:17:45It might look quaint today, but in 1609, in a remote Derbyshire

0:17:45 > 0:17:48village, this building would have looked freakishly modern.

0:17:55 > 0:17:59Hoping there's nothing freakish about her cosy design,

0:17:59 > 0:18:02Rachel's deep red walls are being painted.

0:18:02 > 0:18:06But her client is worried about the bureau turning blue.

0:18:06 > 0:18:09- I'm just a bit anxious about that colour.- Right.

0:18:09 > 0:18:11It's not a colour I really want.

0:18:11 > 0:18:14I don't want to create something that's all matchy-matchy

0:18:14 > 0:18:18for you, I want there to be little bits of interest around the room.

0:18:18 > 0:18:20- Right. - THEY LAUGH

0:18:20 > 0:18:22Oh.

0:18:22 > 0:18:26- OK.- Lovely.- Keep your fingers crossed.- Yay!

0:18:28 > 0:18:30Here goes!

0:18:31 > 0:18:35Some people, because it's wood, they get a bit..."Uh!"

0:18:35 > 0:18:37It looks better, OK?

0:18:37 > 0:18:40Hello. I like to talk to my furniture as well.

0:18:49 > 0:18:53Jazzing up furniture is what Rachel is all about at home, too.

0:18:53 > 0:18:56I found this in a charity shop. It was £25.

0:18:56 > 0:18:59I knew it needed an uplift, so I kind of went for the pink.

0:18:59 > 0:19:02So, yes, I am a bit impulsive with colour.

0:19:02 > 0:19:05I get an idea in my head and I find myself in the car

0:19:05 > 0:19:09driving to the paint shop and I think, "Here I am again."

0:19:12 > 0:19:15She seems in control, she seems confident,

0:19:15 > 0:19:16but I ain't seeing the magic at the moment.

0:19:16 > 0:19:19That kind of scheme is pretty tried and tested, isn't it?

0:19:19 > 0:19:22But what we're wanting is a higher level of creativity.

0:19:24 > 0:19:29Hoping he's showing enough creativity in his Scandinavian sitting-room,

0:19:29 > 0:19:30Jamie's walls are going grey,

0:19:30 > 0:19:34while he is busy turning rustic logs into modern tables.

0:19:34 > 0:19:38The tops are going to be painted in accent colours that are going to be used within the room.

0:19:39 > 0:19:42Sand the top down and make it a bit more flat,

0:19:42 > 0:19:44so make sure all that's smooth.

0:19:44 > 0:19:46And I think it looks great.

0:19:51 > 0:19:53Jamie's stripped back style is

0:19:53 > 0:19:55evident all over his County Durham home,

0:19:55 > 0:19:58where he splits his spare time upcycling furniture

0:19:58 > 0:20:02- and caring for his grandad.- I take a lot of inspiration from my grandad.

0:20:02 > 0:20:06Since quite a young age, he's lost his sight and now he's completely blind.

0:20:06 > 0:20:11The way he kind of takes life on really makes me want to go for this now.

0:20:11 > 0:20:16Jamie would always come with an idea. He'll make anything look good.

0:20:17 > 0:20:18Back on site, it's his

0:20:18 > 0:20:22contemporary shelving that Jamie is hoping to make look good.

0:20:22 > 0:20:23Yeah, they are looking great,

0:20:23 > 0:20:25I can't wait to see them kind of in the room.

0:20:25 > 0:20:30I'm really worried, because he's not getting traditional Swedish design.

0:20:30 > 0:20:33He's giving them something that's really cool and edgy.

0:20:33 > 0:20:36It is really not to brief, you know that?

0:20:39 > 0:20:42Keen to meet her brief by unifying her room in shades of green,

0:20:42 > 0:20:44Sarah has got the lighter tone going up,

0:20:44 > 0:20:47while she is out in the garden.

0:20:47 > 0:20:50They've got this beautiful old piece of wood that the homeowner

0:20:50 > 0:20:54would like us to use as the top for the window seat,

0:20:54 > 0:20:58so we are going to give it a clean off and see how it comes up.

0:21:03 > 0:21:06Sarah has brought the outside in at her home in Sussex, too.

0:21:08 > 0:21:13This is the room that we call the poppy room. I found the wallpaper.

0:21:13 > 0:21:16We put it up on the walls and it was all like, "Oh, my God,

0:21:16 > 0:21:18"that's a lot of poppies!"

0:21:18 > 0:21:21But I've kind of layered other colours on top of it.

0:21:21 > 0:21:23Colour is everything.

0:21:23 > 0:21:27It's how it makes you feel and how you live in a room,

0:21:27 > 0:21:29so it's really important to me.

0:21:32 > 0:21:35There's going to be a total glow of green in this room.

0:21:35 > 0:21:39I kind of wanted to bring this amazing outside inside,

0:21:39 > 0:21:43and give him a feeling that there was a kind of continuation.

0:21:44 > 0:21:48One green was nice, but two greens, working together, I don't know.

0:21:48 > 0:21:51- Yeah, it's a bit of a risky strategy, isn't it?- Yeah.

0:21:53 > 0:21:56Hoping she's got her colours right, Lily is ploughing on with her

0:21:56 > 0:22:00autumnal scheme, making red velvet cushions.

0:22:00 > 0:22:04I was going to put a button on here, but now, having met their dogs,

0:22:04 > 0:22:07lovely as they are, they might eat the button,

0:22:07 > 0:22:08so I might not put the button.

0:22:12 > 0:22:16Lily's multiple craft projects echo the way she's decorated her

0:22:16 > 0:22:19- London home. - I love hand making things.

0:22:19 > 0:22:22I love the process of it, and having a finished product gives me

0:22:22 > 0:22:27great satisfaction. I think my family like my designs.

0:22:27 > 0:22:31- They haven't complained yet. - I was on my way home the other day and there was a picture on Facebook

0:22:31 > 0:22:34of one of our walls being painted gold, which I would never do.

0:22:34 > 0:22:37When I came home it looked great, and it was like, "OK, that's really good."

0:22:44 > 0:22:47So, Lily, I can see you're totally going for it, painting the furniture.

0:22:47 > 0:22:50This is the third coat now. I've sanded it,

0:22:50 > 0:22:53so you get back to the velvety, soft material.

0:22:53 > 0:22:55And then do you have to seal it or anything?

0:22:55 > 0:22:58No, because this is emulsion with medium,

0:22:58 > 0:23:01so it is already kind of plasticky and it is durable.

0:23:01 > 0:23:04What I do like about Lily, she is just not laying back

0:23:04 > 0:23:07and doing cottage, she wants to give them something new

0:23:07 > 0:23:10and not something that is just really obvious.

0:23:16 > 0:23:19Our four designers may think they have enough to do,

0:23:19 > 0:23:20but there's more to come.

0:23:20 > 0:23:24The judges have a surprise upcycle project that will test how

0:23:24 > 0:23:28well they can think on their feet. They are giving them an old barrel.

0:23:28 > 0:23:30- Hello. - You are looking very relaxed there.

0:23:30 > 0:23:33There you go, I'm going to give you a bit more stress. You need it.

0:23:33 > 0:23:35I want you to take this barrel,

0:23:35 > 0:23:38and I would like you to get creative with it.

0:23:38 > 0:23:4324 hours to turn this barrel into something that either

0:23:43 > 0:23:45integrates with your scheme...

0:23:45 > 0:23:49Or, better still, reinvent it, redesign it, come up with something new.

0:23:49 > 0:23:51I'm curious to see what you're going to come up with.

0:23:51 > 0:23:55- I did not expect that. - Oh, my God, a barrel.

0:23:55 > 0:23:58Oh, what can I use this as?

0:23:58 > 0:24:00If I take it to pieces it would be really

0:24:00 > 0:24:03good in the wood-burning stove.

0:24:08 > 0:24:12It's late on day one and having come last in the client

0:24:12 > 0:24:15presentation judging, Sarah is feeling the pressure...

0:24:15 > 0:24:18- I've got to up my game. - THEY LAUGH

0:24:18 > 0:24:22Oh, no. 'I'm going to sleep well tonight.'

0:24:22 > 0:24:26It's been a long day. And tomorrow is going to be even longer.

0:24:26 > 0:24:28..while others are more confident.

0:24:28 > 0:24:31I'm feeling much happier than I thought

0:24:31 > 0:24:32I would do at the end of day one.

0:24:32 > 0:24:35And not as exhausted as I thought I would be.

0:24:35 > 0:24:38Maybe it is all the fresh air, I don't know.

0:24:39 > 0:24:43With so much to do, Lily is continuing work back at the hotel.

0:24:43 > 0:24:46I am feeling a little bit anxious, because today has been manic.

0:24:46 > 0:24:49And I really want to get a move on to start doing

0:24:49 > 0:24:52all the sewing projects, which I have plenty of.

0:25:03 > 0:25:05After a day of clearing and prep work,

0:25:05 > 0:25:08paint has gone on the walls of all four houses.

0:25:08 > 0:25:11But our designers still have a long way to go.

0:25:11 > 0:25:14Today should be a good day. I'm raring to go.

0:25:14 > 0:25:18Really got to knuckle down today.

0:25:18 > 0:25:22I think there's loads to do, but I'm quite optimistic.

0:25:22 > 0:25:25Feeling good. Just kind of want to get cracking on.

0:25:26 > 0:25:31On day two, each designer will show their rooms so far to their client.

0:25:31 > 0:25:34Any unexpected issues at this crucial stage could be

0:25:34 > 0:25:37a serious setback.

0:25:37 > 0:25:39Come in, David.

0:25:39 > 0:25:43For Sarah, her client is seeing all the green for the first time.

0:25:44 > 0:25:48Hopefully, he'll like it. The colours are bold, so

0:25:48 > 0:25:51that might be a shock.

0:25:53 > 0:25:55- It's dark.- Yeah.

0:25:55 > 0:25:57THEY LAUGH

0:25:57 > 0:26:00- It is dark. - 'I basically just walked into'

0:26:00 > 0:26:03a couple of B&Q colour cards.

0:26:03 > 0:26:06It is just so nothing that I would ever choose.

0:26:07 > 0:26:10It's hard at this point to visualise

0:26:10 > 0:26:13what she's trying to achieve with the room.

0:26:16 > 0:26:18There are controversial colour choices at Rachel's,

0:26:18 > 0:26:21too, as she finishes the blue bureau.

0:26:21 > 0:26:24It is such a kind of country colour. It is going to look beautiful.

0:26:26 > 0:26:30She's also putting her artistic touch on some country scenes.

0:26:30 > 0:26:33These are just some tourist board pictures

0:26:33 > 0:26:36I've printed from the internet of this area.

0:26:36 > 0:26:39And I'm just going to give them a wash of white emulsion,

0:26:39 > 0:26:41just to make them a bit softer.

0:26:42 > 0:26:45It just makes them look more painterly than a photograph.

0:26:51 > 0:26:54Yeah, I'd just like to show you kind of the progress of how we've got on.

0:26:54 > 0:26:56The finished picture seems a long way off

0:26:56 > 0:26:59in Jamie's Scandinavian scheme.

0:26:59 > 0:27:03But the time has come to show his clients his work so far.

0:27:03 > 0:27:04Are you liking it?

0:27:04 > 0:27:08I'm slightly concerned that it's slightly more modern than

0:27:08 > 0:27:12- we were expecting.- Right. - In my mind's eye, I had

0:27:12 > 0:27:15- rural farmhouse.- Yeah, I understand.

0:27:15 > 0:27:20- And I'm thinking I just don't want to get Stockholm flat.- Yes.

0:27:20 > 0:27:25So, a clear steer from the client, but Jamie is standing by his design.

0:27:25 > 0:27:28I could have just came and kind of done a traditional

0:27:28 > 0:27:30Scandinavian room, like they asked on the brief.

0:27:30 > 0:27:32But then that's not kind of pushing me,

0:27:32 > 0:27:34and kind of wanting to show my kind of creativity.

0:27:34 > 0:27:37So I feel it's important for me to put this modern kind of twist on it.

0:27:40 > 0:27:43So, next to get a modern twist is an old chair.

0:27:43 > 0:27:46So, this is the first chair I've reupholstered,

0:27:46 > 0:27:49so hopefully, fingers crossed, it will work out.

0:27:50 > 0:27:53I'm always kind of wanting to push myself for a challenge and,

0:27:53 > 0:27:56who knows, I might be doing like a sofa next.

0:27:56 > 0:27:59- So, Jamie, upholstery?- Yes. - Where did that come from?

0:27:59 > 0:28:02The only thing I had really done is a stool, which anyone can do.

0:28:02 > 0:28:04So doing a chair is a massive challenge,

0:28:04 > 0:28:06and kind of just doing it while I was here, but, yes,

0:28:06 > 0:28:09learn as you go, and kind of wanting to progress and do other things.

0:28:14 > 0:28:17Progressing with her endless craft projects is Lily,

0:28:17 > 0:28:20as she creates bespoke art...

0:28:20 > 0:28:24and dries petals briefly in the microwave to revamp an old table.

0:28:24 > 0:28:29I'm using thin PVA. 50-50, 50 PVA, 50 water.

0:28:29 > 0:28:33And just pasting the flowers on.

0:28:33 > 0:28:36Having failed to convince her clients to let her paint the sofa,

0:28:36 > 0:28:38Lily has come up with a dog-friendly idea

0:28:38 > 0:28:41using the old sitting room curtains.

0:28:41 > 0:28:44The idea is to Velcro this on the back of the sofa

0:28:44 > 0:28:48so that they can just whisk it off and wash it, then put it back on.

0:28:55 > 0:28:56Coming up with practical solutions

0:28:56 > 0:29:00and beautiful schemes is not all our designers have to contend with.

0:29:00 > 0:29:02They've also got just 24 hours to design

0:29:02 > 0:29:05a unique product from an old barrel.

0:29:07 > 0:29:09How creative they are here could affect

0:29:09 > 0:29:11who goes through to the next round.

0:29:13 > 0:29:16Jamie is completely reinventing his,

0:29:16 > 0:29:18taking it apart and using it as cladding.

0:29:18 > 0:29:21What I was kind of thinking is making a storage box

0:29:21 > 0:29:23for one of the holes in the shelving.

0:29:23 > 0:29:26Jamie has taken his barrel back to the raw material,

0:29:26 > 0:29:28but I'm a little bit disappointed. I think it's always nice

0:29:28 > 0:29:32if the idea incorporates some of the original incarnation.

0:29:32 > 0:29:34I disagree, I think it's a really neat idea.

0:29:34 > 0:29:37He's made the most of the angles and slats of the barrel

0:29:37 > 0:29:40and come up with something really decorative.

0:29:40 > 0:29:43Great, I'm really happy with them. That will work really well.

0:29:44 > 0:29:47I was thinking of doing something like a personalised dog bed.

0:29:47 > 0:29:51Lily has her doggy client in mind.

0:29:51 > 0:29:53- The dog's name is Dogbert.- Dogbert.

0:29:53 > 0:29:56- And just a "D". - Lily has been really creative.

0:29:56 > 0:30:00She has come up with something that is actually useful, and also answers the homeowners' brief.

0:30:00 > 0:30:03And the homeowners wanted that room to suit the dogs, too.

0:30:03 > 0:30:07And coming up with this bespoke dog basket really ticks that box.

0:30:07 > 0:30:10This is the canopy bit of the bed.

0:30:10 > 0:30:11For Dogbert.

0:30:11 > 0:30:14And this is her glam cushion.

0:30:14 > 0:30:15She can just snuggle in there,

0:30:15 > 0:30:18and I've put a "D" there to personalise it.

0:30:21 > 0:30:26- Sarah is thinking book storage for her barrel.- Many, many, many books.

0:30:26 > 0:30:29I've just got to make it look like it's meant,

0:30:29 > 0:30:32rather than an afterthought.

0:30:32 > 0:30:33Sarah has upholstered her basket

0:30:33 > 0:30:37in the same fabric she's used for the cushions, which is clever,

0:30:37 > 0:30:39because that ties it in with the scheme rather nicely.

0:30:39 > 0:30:42And she's thinking about her homeowner's needs

0:30:42 > 0:30:44and given it a practical use, too.

0:30:44 > 0:30:47God, I hope I never see another barrel as long as I live.

0:30:47 > 0:30:50Unless it has got beer in it.

0:30:50 > 0:30:52Rachel is planning a log basket.

0:30:53 > 0:30:57She had a large basket on the fireplace,

0:30:57 > 0:30:59and it was quite overpowering, I thought,

0:30:59 > 0:31:04so I'm going to put this smaller one on the fireplace.

0:31:04 > 0:31:06Well, I suppose a log basket is really useful,

0:31:06 > 0:31:10but Rachel has hardly touched that barrel, she has just added a handle.

0:31:10 > 0:31:13Very disappointing in terms of scale of ambition.

0:31:13 > 0:31:16I'm stressed about the time and getting things finished.

0:31:16 > 0:31:21Painting used to be therapeutic for me. Not today.

0:31:21 > 0:31:24The judges have seen all four barrel projects,

0:31:24 > 0:31:26but they'll have to reserve final judgment

0:31:26 > 0:31:29until the items are placed in the finished schemes.

0:31:35 > 0:31:38The upcycle challenge may test the designers' ability to adapt

0:31:38 > 0:31:43to changing circumstances, something Tissington has been doing for years.

0:31:43 > 0:31:46As in most traditional villages, Tissington's cottages have evolved

0:31:46 > 0:31:50over time as the needs of their inhabitants has changed.

0:31:50 > 0:31:52This began life as a quarryman's cottage,

0:31:52 > 0:31:55close to the very site where its stone was cut,

0:31:55 > 0:31:58before a dairy farmer moved in and built a little dairy to the side.

0:31:58 > 0:32:00Then, generations later, their families have expanded

0:32:00 > 0:32:04into the old dairy and built a new dairy to the side of that.

0:32:09 > 0:32:11The stone used in the village's houses has a distinctive

0:32:11 > 0:32:14two-tone look, typical of the Peak District.

0:32:14 > 0:32:16The walls are in ordinary limestone,

0:32:16 > 0:32:19but the door and window surrounds are in local millstone grit.

0:32:19 > 0:32:22That's easier to precisely carve and chisel.

0:32:25 > 0:32:28No carving or chiselling to be done in Sarah's rustic room.

0:32:28 > 0:32:31Just more green. This time on an old table.

0:32:31 > 0:32:35I'm going to paint one leg the darker green.

0:32:35 > 0:32:38This will probably look like it's actually got three legs.

0:32:38 > 0:32:40It's going to be like a visual illusion,

0:32:40 > 0:32:42giving it style and purpose.

0:32:45 > 0:32:48So, Sarah, one word, green.

0:32:48 > 0:32:50I thought that might be the word you were going to use.

0:32:50 > 0:32:53I bet everyone says, you know, if you are a garden designer,

0:32:53 > 0:32:55- you must love green.- I should be good at this question by now.

0:32:55 > 0:32:58- I've been asked it enough. - THEY LAUGH

0:32:58 > 0:33:03There's no denying that the house is literally in a sea of beautiful

0:33:03 > 0:33:07countryside, and actually to bring that indoors

0:33:07 > 0:33:08seemed really relevant.

0:33:08 > 0:33:11So there was good reasoning behind the green,

0:33:11 > 0:33:14above and beyond the fact that I'm a gardener!

0:33:16 > 0:33:19Over in Rachel's cosy cottage, she's struggling to make

0:33:19 > 0:33:23the curtains she spent £200 buying material for.

0:33:23 > 0:33:27It's concerned me that it's taken me three hours to make one curtain.

0:33:27 > 0:33:30So I'm going to have to pick up the speed on that.

0:33:30 > 0:33:34With the arrival of her client imminent, Rachel's having a wobble.

0:33:34 > 0:33:37I've got self-doubt creeping in, it's not good.

0:33:37 > 0:33:40Rachel, could I... Could I just have a chat with you about something?

0:33:40 > 0:33:43Er, I was just having a look at the mid-board

0:33:43 > 0:33:46and I saw that you'd got the TV on the top of the cupboard.

0:33:46 > 0:33:50- OK...- I really, really would like it to be hidden away.- Right.

0:33:50 > 0:33:52Because I'm kind of putting it with all your pictures

0:33:52 > 0:33:54and all your books and lots of knick-knacks.

0:33:54 > 0:33:56- I see what you're saying... - Do you know what I mean?

0:33:56 > 0:33:58..but it won't convince me, because I hate it.

0:33:58 > 0:34:01I kind of feel strongly that the best solution is for it

0:34:01 > 0:34:03to go on top, so I'm going to stick with that.

0:34:03 > 0:34:06I don't really want to give in on this.

0:34:06 > 0:34:10I really want to dig my heels in, because it's important to me.

0:34:13 > 0:34:17Jamie also thinks he knows best, with a balance of modern

0:34:17 > 0:34:20and traditional in his Scandi design.

0:34:20 > 0:34:23Just really explain to me what it is in your design that is

0:34:23 > 0:34:25bringing the traditional Scandinavian element?

0:34:25 > 0:34:28The organic textures and the organic materials and the fabrics

0:34:28 > 0:34:29and kind of bringing them in.

0:34:29 > 0:34:33I've painted the walls light and stuff like that, so an open, airy feel.

0:34:33 > 0:34:36The penny still hasn't dropped with Jamie, that he's actually

0:34:36 > 0:34:38got homeowners with quite traditional taste

0:34:38 > 0:34:41and he's working in a very period, charming cottage.

0:34:43 > 0:34:47It might be late in the day, but Jamie may just have twigged.

0:34:48 > 0:34:49HE SIGHS

0:34:49 > 0:34:52I feel like I've sort of missed something... Kind of research

0:34:52 > 0:34:55and the kind of traditional... I don't know.

0:34:55 > 0:34:56I feel really sick.

0:35:00 > 0:35:03Nerves are getting to Lily, too, as she's swamped

0:35:03 > 0:35:05by all of her craft projects.

0:35:05 > 0:35:08At this stage, I'm trying to squeeze in the extra work,

0:35:08 > 0:35:11so I'm just focusing now on getting everything to come together.

0:35:11 > 0:35:14With a visit from her client looming,

0:35:14 > 0:35:16she's worried it won't be enough.

0:35:16 > 0:35:19I've put so much in this competition,

0:35:19 > 0:35:24So much work and planning and sleepless nights.

0:35:24 > 0:35:27I didn't realise it would take this much work.

0:35:28 > 0:35:32Time for client and professional decorator Simon

0:35:32 > 0:35:35to pass judgment on Lily's two-tone colour scheme.

0:35:36 > 0:35:39You've got a very nice tidy line on that, anyway. Well done.

0:35:39 > 0:35:42- As long as you're happy, that's the main thing! - LILY LAUGHS NERVOUSLY

0:35:42 > 0:35:44Oh, don't you worry. I'll tell you if I'm not.

0:35:44 > 0:35:46LILY LAUGHS

0:35:46 > 0:35:49When I hear that he's pleased with some stuff,

0:35:49 > 0:35:54that's just a big boost, because I feel like I'm under scrutiny.

0:35:55 > 0:35:58There's a two-tone wall going on there. Where did that come from?

0:35:58 > 0:36:00I was trying to be edgy!

0:36:00 > 0:36:03But, um... It was from Mark Rothko.

0:36:03 > 0:36:05The painter.

0:36:05 > 0:36:08So Mark Rothko comes to the Peak District?

0:36:08 > 0:36:11Yeah, but it has to be straight edges, though.

0:36:11 > 0:36:12For this one!

0:36:14 > 0:36:18Also keen to check out Lily's two-tone walls is her rival.

0:36:18 > 0:36:21- Hi!- Hi. Hi, Rachel.

0:36:21 > 0:36:24- Wow! I love it!- Oh! Do you?

0:36:24 > 0:36:26Oh, I might pinch that for my own.

0:36:26 > 0:36:29I love the contrast with the red.

0:36:29 > 0:36:32She's clearly had the same inspiration as me,

0:36:32 > 0:36:34with the dark beams and stuff,

0:36:34 > 0:36:37and she's kind of gone for these, but she's gone for a two-tone,

0:36:37 > 0:36:41which is really interesting, but kind of in my head,

0:36:41 > 0:36:42I just need to get my room right.

0:36:45 > 0:36:49All four designers want to get it right across their three-day challenge.

0:36:49 > 0:36:54But the pace of change in this village is usually much slower.

0:36:54 > 0:36:57Tissington was largely untouched by the Industrial Revolution,

0:36:57 > 0:36:59but it did get a railway station in the late 19th century.

0:36:59 > 0:37:02Farmers jumped at the chance to sell their produce to the

0:37:02 > 0:37:05industrial centres of Manchester or Derby.

0:37:05 > 0:37:08Horse-drawn carts would circulate the village

0:37:08 > 0:37:11to collect ten-gallon milk urns from stone plinths like this,

0:37:11 > 0:37:14before whisking them off to the station.

0:37:19 > 0:37:24Like most of the local villages, Tissington would once have been almost entirely self-sufficient.

0:37:24 > 0:37:26In the 19th century, there was a wheelwright, a tailor,

0:37:26 > 0:37:29a joiner, a cheesemonger, a butcher...

0:37:29 > 0:37:32With 48 of the 52 homes still owned by the estate,

0:37:32 > 0:37:34it's still a thriving community.

0:37:34 > 0:37:36But these days, the tourist trade rules the roost,

0:37:36 > 0:37:40with antique shops, tea rooms and even an old-fashioned sweet shop.

0:37:45 > 0:37:46It's the end of day two.

0:37:46 > 0:37:50And tomorrow's decision on who goes home is looming large

0:37:50 > 0:37:52for all the designers.

0:37:52 > 0:37:54I think the reason I'm not super-confident is that

0:37:54 > 0:37:57I still feel I have got so much to do.

0:37:57 > 0:38:02If I had another day, I'd feel really confident. But I don't, so...

0:38:02 > 0:38:03SHE SIGHS

0:38:05 > 0:38:07I feel in a good place, so yeah, I'm happy.

0:38:07 > 0:38:10But I want to take things back to the hotel and finish some sewing

0:38:10 > 0:38:14and kind of see where it takes me, what time in the morning.

0:38:16 > 0:38:20Tomorrow's a big day. I'm pooped.

0:38:20 > 0:38:23For Lily, it's another night spent working into the early hours

0:38:23 > 0:38:26as she tries to deliver all her arts and crafts.

0:38:27 > 0:38:32It's a bit overwhelming, but I'm on the finish line.

0:38:32 > 0:38:33Almost.

0:38:41 > 0:38:45It's the final day of this close-run competition and come what may,

0:38:45 > 0:38:48one of our designers will be going home today.

0:38:48 > 0:38:50I haven't had any sleep.

0:38:50 > 0:38:52But I'm so excited to dress this room

0:38:52 > 0:38:55and just to see it all coming together.

0:38:55 > 0:38:57I'm absolutely knackered, but now I'm really excited to get

0:38:57 > 0:39:00cracking and kind of get the room finished.

0:39:00 > 0:39:03I still believe in the design, I believe in the colours.

0:39:03 > 0:39:07It's probably going to be nicknamed "The Sea Of Green"!

0:39:07 > 0:39:08Right, Sarah...

0:39:09 > 0:39:13But Sarah's day gets off to a disastrous start.

0:39:13 > 0:39:18I came back in last night and I now know I'm not going

0:39:18 > 0:39:21to be able to live with the ceilings in this colour.

0:39:21 > 0:39:23We've got an issue with time now.

0:39:23 > 0:39:27Painting back over the dark colour is going to be tricky.

0:39:29 > 0:39:33The builders are literally pulling out all the stops to try get that ceiling painted.

0:39:35 > 0:39:37Has Sarah managed to unite the two spaces?

0:39:37 > 0:39:39Well, she did at the beginning,

0:39:39 > 0:39:41because she had these two interesting greens.

0:39:41 > 0:39:44But the homeowner got a little bit scared and

0:39:44 > 0:39:46has actually convinced her to paint the ceilings in white,

0:39:46 > 0:39:49and I think what she should've tried to do is compromise a little bit

0:39:49 > 0:39:52and paint that ceiling in a stone, so the atmosphere hadn't been lost.

0:39:54 > 0:39:58Lily is starting to see her many projects take shape.

0:39:58 > 0:40:00First, a ruffled lampshade...

0:40:00 > 0:40:02I was going to ditch this, but this...

0:40:02 > 0:40:05I've spent hours on this, so...

0:40:05 > 0:40:08..and a TV cabinet decorated with logs.

0:40:08 > 0:40:12I'm just doing this randomly and I think it fits in

0:40:12 > 0:40:15with the rest of the room and that's that.

0:40:15 > 0:40:16Lily's got all her walls painted.

0:40:16 > 0:40:18They look really, really dramatic.

0:40:18 > 0:40:20But my concerns are, she was all about the detail.

0:40:20 > 0:40:23There were lots of interesting little things

0:40:23 > 0:40:25that she was showing in the presentation,

0:40:25 > 0:40:26but we haven't seen those done yet.

0:40:28 > 0:40:31The details are finally looking less modern in Jamie's room,

0:40:31 > 0:40:33with some Scandi stencilling.

0:40:33 > 0:40:35When I researched into Nordic prints,

0:40:35 > 0:40:37I wanted to simplify it within the room.

0:40:37 > 0:40:38I wanted it to stand out,

0:40:38 > 0:40:41but I didn't want it to be too kind of scary.

0:40:41 > 0:40:43It's quite Bohemian as well.

0:40:43 > 0:40:47Has Jamie managed to bring Scandi style to remote Derbyshire?

0:40:47 > 0:40:49He certainly has.

0:40:49 > 0:40:52He's completely transformed that room already from dark red

0:40:52 > 0:40:54to a really light-inducing pale grey.

0:40:54 > 0:40:57What I'm seeing at this stage is there's no zing of colour,

0:40:57 > 0:41:01so it's really going to be all down to the last few minutes.

0:41:02 > 0:41:05It's also down to the last few minutes for Rachel,

0:41:05 > 0:41:08though she still has plenty of jobs to finish.

0:41:08 > 0:41:11I'm feeling very panicky now.

0:41:11 > 0:41:15The enormity of what I've got to do. Oh, dear.

0:41:15 > 0:41:17There could be tears today.

0:41:17 > 0:41:21To add to the chaos, Rachel's had a change of heart about the TV.

0:41:22 > 0:41:25TV-gate is weighing on my mind.

0:41:25 > 0:41:28I've kind of just thought now that I'm just going to ask Johnny

0:41:28 > 0:41:31to cut part of the shelf away so the TV can get snuck in there

0:41:31 > 0:41:34and that's going to have to be the solution.

0:41:34 > 0:41:37Rachel was asked for a very country cottage kind of look.

0:41:37 > 0:41:38Is she delivering that?

0:41:38 > 0:41:40She's come up with a very competent scheme,

0:41:40 > 0:41:43but it's not blowing either of us away.

0:41:43 > 0:41:45Well, no, because country cottage, I think,

0:41:45 > 0:41:48is all about creating some charm and being creative,

0:41:48 > 0:41:50making something out of nothing.

0:41:50 > 0:41:52It all looks a bit ironed out to me.

0:41:54 > 0:41:58Our designers have had three days and £1,000 to transform their rooms.

0:42:00 > 0:42:03They've been tested on their client presentation skills

0:42:03 > 0:42:06and had to show they can think fast to create an original piece

0:42:06 > 0:42:08which will be judged in the final room.

0:42:10 > 0:42:12Now their time is nearly up.

0:42:12 > 0:42:15Rachel was ranked first after the presentations,

0:42:15 > 0:42:16but the others could all overtake her

0:42:16 > 0:42:19if she doesn't deliver a scheme with flair.

0:42:22 > 0:42:24- CRASHING - What's broken?

0:42:24 > 0:42:26What have I broke? The clock.

0:42:26 > 0:42:28Oh, my God, I'm knackered.

0:42:35 > 0:42:36Time's up.

0:42:39 > 0:42:43Rachel's fate is now in the hands of the judges.

0:42:43 > 0:42:45I'm very pleased it's finished.

0:42:45 > 0:42:47It's been quite emotional, actually.

0:42:47 > 0:42:50Much more emotional than I thought it would be.

0:42:50 > 0:42:53Rachel's brief was to create a cosy country reading room.

0:42:55 > 0:42:58Three days ago, the room looked plain and functional.

0:43:03 > 0:43:07Now she's warmed things up with a deep red colour scheme,

0:43:07 > 0:43:09contrasting with accents of light blue,

0:43:09 > 0:43:11including the revamped bureau.

0:43:13 > 0:43:17There's new shelving and Rachel's conceded to her client's wishes,

0:43:17 > 0:43:19and hidden the TV in a bespoke cupboard.

0:43:20 > 0:43:24And she's handmade the tartan curtains and cushions,

0:43:24 > 0:43:25bringing a natural feel.

0:43:27 > 0:43:29I'm not sure what the judges will make of it.

0:43:29 > 0:43:33I have compromised a little bit in the way I wanted it to look,

0:43:33 > 0:43:35but I kind of went with my heart over my head

0:43:35 > 0:43:37and I wanted to please the homeowner.

0:43:39 > 0:43:41I know this homeowner really wanted to add some cosiness

0:43:41 > 0:43:45and some charm to this room and I find it very welcoming.

0:43:45 > 0:43:47She's injected a little bit of personality.

0:43:47 > 0:43:50I like how she's played with the blue against the red.

0:43:50 > 0:43:52It looks really fun and playful.

0:43:52 > 0:43:56Everything does kind of match, which slightly rubs me up the wrong way.

0:43:56 > 0:43:58It rubs you up the wrong way - it can be a bit safe.

0:43:58 > 0:44:00Ta-da!

0:44:00 > 0:44:01TV cabinet.

0:44:01 > 0:44:04I do think, though, that Rachel was sulking a little bit about putting

0:44:04 > 0:44:07this TV in the cupboard, because she could have designed it better

0:44:07 > 0:44:10and just lifted it up so she could actually watch it from the sofa,

0:44:10 > 0:44:13rather than having to peer really low down.

0:44:13 > 0:44:16The upcycle challenge is a crucial part of the judging criteria

0:44:16 > 0:44:19and this is the first time that Sophie and Daniel

0:44:19 > 0:44:21have seen Rachel's barrel in the finished scheme.

0:44:21 > 0:44:25It's not had much of a transformation, but jolly useful.

0:44:25 > 0:44:26Yeah, exactly.

0:44:29 > 0:44:32I'm not sure if the homeowner's going to like it.

0:44:32 > 0:44:34I think she will. I may cry if she doesn't.

0:44:37 > 0:44:38Come in.

0:44:38 > 0:44:41SHE GASPS Let me close the door behind you

0:44:41 > 0:44:43and what do you think?

0:44:43 > 0:44:48It feels much more cosy and that's what was really lacking.

0:44:48 > 0:44:50And the best thing of all...!

0:44:52 > 0:44:53There it is,

0:44:53 > 0:44:58- hidden away.- Thank you, Rachel, that is perfect.

0:44:58 > 0:45:01The only thing that I'm not sure about is the blue,

0:45:01 > 0:45:04but I really would like to leave it for a while and see.

0:45:07 > 0:45:09Not sure whether I'm keeping that down.

0:45:09 > 0:45:11Next to finish is Jamie.

0:45:12 > 0:45:16So we've got 20 minutes to get the sofas in and get everything tidied,

0:45:16 > 0:45:18so fingers crossed.

0:45:18 > 0:45:20Oh, God.

0:45:20 > 0:45:23With worries all along that he misinterpreted the brief,

0:45:23 > 0:45:26Jamie must now bring enough traditional elements

0:45:26 > 0:45:27to prove he hasn't.

0:45:29 > 0:45:32We got there and I absolutely love it.

0:45:36 > 0:45:38Jamie's brief was to create a traditional,

0:45:38 > 0:45:40Scandinavian-inspired sitting room.

0:45:42 > 0:45:44Before, the room looked tired and cluttered.

0:45:49 > 0:45:52Now the grey walls act as a backdrop

0:45:52 > 0:45:54to Jamie's bespoke, boxed-in shelving.

0:45:57 > 0:45:59He's brought in sofas from another room,

0:45:59 > 0:46:01upholstered a chair

0:46:01 > 0:46:03and painted log tables.

0:46:04 > 0:46:07He's brought the traditional side, with textural cushions

0:46:07 > 0:46:09and stencilled details.

0:46:11 > 0:46:12I'm happy.

0:46:14 > 0:46:15And tired.

0:46:18 > 0:46:21First of all, I've just got to say, what a transformation.

0:46:21 > 0:46:24Before you were welcomed into this room with that gorgeous,

0:46:24 > 0:46:27coral-y, pink-y colour on the walls.

0:46:27 > 0:46:29This is the total opposite end of the spectrum,

0:46:29 > 0:46:31this very kind of cool grey,

0:46:31 > 0:46:35- but it has definitely helped open up the space.- Yeah.

0:46:35 > 0:46:38- But ply.- No, sorry.

0:46:38 > 0:46:39It's a no from me.

0:46:39 > 0:46:43It's a very industrial, raw, slightly urban material to use.

0:46:43 > 0:46:44- It just looks wrong. - It's a bit of a no.

0:46:44 > 0:46:47I'm not completely convinced that he's been very sympathetic

0:46:47 > 0:46:48to the age of the property,

0:46:48 > 0:46:51or really some of the more traditional, Bohemian,

0:46:51 > 0:46:54folksy elements that were asked of by the homeowners.

0:46:54 > 0:46:58I don't know, I think he's hit that quite nicely and quite subtly.

0:46:58 > 0:47:00I like the stencilling on the shutters.

0:47:00 > 0:47:03It almost looks like a Fair Isle jumper.

0:47:04 > 0:47:07Jamie's also stencilled his barrel upcycle,

0:47:07 > 0:47:10which the judges can see for the first time in the room.

0:47:10 > 0:47:13Brilliant, because look at the shapes and the angles with the wood.

0:47:13 > 0:47:16He's placed them out, he's given it a nice texture

0:47:16 > 0:47:18and rhythm and movement.

0:47:18 > 0:47:19Yeah, I like that very much.

0:47:23 > 0:47:25I'm just kind of excited to finally kind of hear feedback,

0:47:25 > 0:47:27whether the homeowner likes it.

0:47:29 > 0:47:30So come inside.

0:47:30 > 0:47:32Wow!

0:47:32 > 0:47:36You wanted a kind of traditional Scandi kind of style.

0:47:36 > 0:47:39He's gone for quite temporary.

0:47:39 > 0:47:40Yes, love it!

0:47:40 > 0:47:44Absolutely love it. It's deviated from the brief,

0:47:44 > 0:47:47but he has respected what we're after.

0:47:51 > 0:47:54Next due to finish is Lily.

0:47:54 > 0:47:58Right, my painted foot stool to look like leather.

0:47:58 > 0:48:01Now she must display all her handmade crafts.

0:48:04 > 0:48:06Right, done.

0:48:06 > 0:48:07SHE GROANS

0:48:09 > 0:48:11I'm looking forward to the judging.

0:48:11 > 0:48:16If I go through to the next round, it'll be such a rewarding result.

0:48:17 > 0:48:21Lily was asked to create an autumnal, dog-friendly scheme.

0:48:23 > 0:48:25Before, the sitting room was well worn.

0:48:30 > 0:48:33Now, it's vibrant, with colour-blocked walls.

0:48:35 > 0:48:39The sofa and armchair have been restored with the old curtains,

0:48:39 > 0:48:41while the footstool fabric has been painted.

0:48:43 > 0:48:46And Lily's added an array of handmade soft furnishings

0:48:46 > 0:48:47and decorative details.

0:48:49 > 0:48:53The judges can have as long a look as they like.

0:48:53 > 0:48:55And I hope they like it.

0:48:57 > 0:49:01You know, we always say we want the designer to give

0:49:01 > 0:49:03a little bit more than they're asked for.

0:49:03 > 0:49:05- She has!- They've got it, yeah, definitely!

0:49:05 > 0:49:07Yeah, this room's dark,

0:49:07 > 0:49:11so she's painted these lovely, warm, rich red colours,

0:49:11 > 0:49:14but she's done this interesting colour blocking all the way

0:49:14 > 0:49:17- round the room.- I really like the way she's dealt with the sofa.

0:49:17 > 0:49:19She's covered it in some beautiful fabrics.

0:49:19 > 0:49:20We've got wools and velvets.

0:49:20 > 0:49:22There are some really quite mad,

0:49:22 > 0:49:24left-field things going on in this room.

0:49:24 > 0:49:26I really don't like those bits of wood

0:49:26 > 0:49:27stuck on that rather smart cabinet.

0:49:27 > 0:49:31Maybe there's just too many gimmicks.

0:49:31 > 0:49:33One gimmick Lily took very seriously

0:49:33 > 0:49:35was the upcycled barrel dog bed.

0:49:35 > 0:49:37It's a little spot for Dogbert to curl up in.

0:49:37 > 0:49:39She is just not going to know she's born -

0:49:39 > 0:49:41she's even got her own little velvet cushion.

0:49:41 > 0:49:43Yeah, a miniature kennel in the room -

0:49:43 > 0:49:44rather a nice thing, isn't it?

0:49:46 > 0:49:48The homeowners are my biggest concern.

0:49:48 > 0:49:51I would love them to be pleased with my design

0:49:51 > 0:49:53and how it all came together.

0:49:54 > 0:49:56Come in, come in.

0:49:56 > 0:49:58- Mm-hm!- Goodness!

0:49:58 > 0:50:00- Goodness me! - Goodness, goodness, goodness!

0:50:00 > 0:50:03- Right... - Ooh, Dogbert! He's got a new bed!

0:50:03 > 0:50:04Does it feel cosy enough?

0:50:04 > 0:50:07You wanted something cosy and rustic and autumnal.

0:50:07 > 0:50:08It does, actually, yes.

0:50:08 > 0:50:10The fireplace looks good as well.

0:50:10 > 0:50:11Yes, I really like it, it's very nice.

0:50:11 > 0:50:13She's caught the brief very well.

0:50:16 > 0:50:18Finally, Sarah.

0:50:18 > 0:50:20Having come last in the client presentation judging,

0:50:20 > 0:50:22she's got a lot to make up for

0:50:22 > 0:50:25and the new white ceiling isn't giving how much hope.

0:50:25 > 0:50:28It's not ideal,

0:50:28 > 0:50:31but it is what it is and I can't do anything about it now.

0:50:36 > 0:50:38It has been manic today,

0:50:38 > 0:50:42but it's been really nice to see everything come together.

0:50:42 > 0:50:45Sarah's brief was to design a rustic sitting room.

0:50:47 > 0:50:50Before, it was unfinished and needed unifying.

0:50:55 > 0:50:57Now it has a new colour palette,

0:50:57 > 0:51:00the deep, dark green alongside the lighter shade.

0:51:04 > 0:51:07Sarah's upcycled pieces of furniture

0:51:07 > 0:51:08and created a ladder bookshelf.

0:51:10 > 0:51:14She's also linked the outside in with green soft furnishings

0:51:14 > 0:51:16adding to the rustic scheme.

0:51:21 > 0:51:24- OK.- I really like it, cos it sort of feels like it has all come together.

0:51:24 > 0:51:27It's rustic, it's charming.

0:51:27 > 0:51:29What do you think of this colour,

0:51:29 > 0:51:31now that we've got all the other accents brought in?

0:51:31 > 0:51:34It's a little bit too synthetic for a cottage.

0:51:34 > 0:51:37It would have been better with some sort of wash on the walls,

0:51:37 > 0:51:41- something dirtier.- Yeah, a little muddier.- Earthier.- Yeah.

0:51:41 > 0:51:44The all-important upcycled barrel is in the room,

0:51:44 > 0:51:46so what do they think of it in situ?

0:51:46 > 0:51:48Been upholstered...

0:51:48 > 0:51:50- Beautifully.- ..and turned into a book bucket.

0:51:50 > 0:51:52Never thought of having a bucket for books.

0:51:52 > 0:51:54No, I've never seen it before either,

0:51:54 > 0:51:57but he clearly has a big collection of books.

0:51:57 > 0:52:00The big challenge for Sarah here was unifying the space

0:52:00 > 0:52:03- and getting that right isn't easy. - It works very well.

0:52:03 > 0:52:07I love this area, because it's quite a tricky area to deal with,

0:52:07 > 0:52:09it's very small and it's very tall.

0:52:09 > 0:52:11I wish that ceiling was dark,

0:52:11 > 0:52:13it would help kind of create this cosy vibe.

0:52:17 > 0:52:19I'm still concerned that the homeowner

0:52:19 > 0:52:22won't like the overall colours.

0:52:22 > 0:52:25I've got my fingers firmly crossed that he's going to come in

0:52:25 > 0:52:26and go, "Now I get it."

0:52:30 > 0:52:31Oh, my goodness me.

0:52:32 > 0:52:33Gosh, it's so different.

0:52:33 > 0:52:36Shall we go and have a look at the other space?

0:52:36 > 0:52:39- One of the key tasks she had was to unify...- Yes.

0:52:39 > 0:52:42It's not what I would have chosen.

0:52:42 > 0:52:43Funnily enough, I like this green.

0:52:43 > 0:52:48I've never been 100% certain that it works with that green.

0:52:48 > 0:52:53Whether long-term I will keep with the green theme,

0:52:53 > 0:52:55but the concept is excellent.

0:52:59 > 0:53:01Now the four amateurs can only wait

0:53:01 > 0:53:04to find out who will be going through to the next round

0:53:04 > 0:53:06and which one will be going home.

0:53:06 > 0:53:09I think everyone will be proud of what they've achieved.

0:53:09 > 0:53:12- So intense. - We got through it, though.

0:53:12 > 0:53:15I've given, yes, everything I can to this design,

0:53:15 > 0:53:17so I guess we'll see if I've done enough.

0:53:17 > 0:53:21I love the rooms and it's kind of given me a feeling

0:53:21 > 0:53:23that, yeah, I could do this.

0:53:23 > 0:53:25Do I want to go through to the next round?

0:53:25 > 0:53:28It's been so exhausting and emotionally draining.

0:53:28 > 0:53:30I'm not sure!

0:53:34 > 0:53:37Sarah's homeowner wanted something rustic

0:53:37 > 0:53:39that unified the two parts of that space.

0:53:39 > 0:53:43- How did she do?- She used a lot of green and it certainly made me

0:53:43 > 0:53:47feel very nervous, but the end result was a very cohesive scheme.

0:53:47 > 0:53:49I love Sarah's inventiveness.

0:53:49 > 0:53:52I was constantly entertained as it travelled round the room.

0:53:52 > 0:53:54Well, the homeowner, he liked it.

0:53:54 > 0:53:58He wasn't entirely convinced by the green.

0:53:58 > 0:53:59He loved her styling.

0:53:59 > 0:54:00- Yeah.- Yeah, the styling's great.

0:54:00 > 0:54:04So Lily was asked for something cosy and rustic - did she deliver?

0:54:04 > 0:54:07Actually, I think she delivered what she promised.

0:54:07 > 0:54:08The concern is,

0:54:08 > 0:54:10was it at the right quality level?

0:54:10 > 0:54:13I must admit, I was really impressed that she delivered

0:54:13 > 0:54:16on the practical elements, then she gave them quite a flourish.

0:54:16 > 0:54:19Yeah, but I'm just worried if there were one too many flourishes.

0:54:19 > 0:54:21She needs to learn not to be quite so ambitious.

0:54:21 > 0:54:24- You want to hear what the homeowner thought?- Mmm.

0:54:24 > 0:54:27An exacting client - painter and decorator, so he cast his eye.

0:54:27 > 0:54:29- He could find very few faults.- Wow!

0:54:29 > 0:54:32Rachel's homeowner wanted a warm reading room.

0:54:32 > 0:54:34Did she get it?

0:54:34 > 0:54:37She was a little defiant with the brief, actually.

0:54:37 > 0:54:39Her homeowner really doesn't like blue -

0:54:39 > 0:54:40she put the blue in anyway,

0:54:40 > 0:54:43but then we had the issue with the TV.

0:54:43 > 0:54:46But she got a very warm, welcoming reading room.

0:54:46 > 0:54:49Our concern, though, is was it edgy enough?

0:54:49 > 0:54:52Well, you got one happy homeowner.

0:54:52 > 0:54:54What is rather nice about Rachel -

0:54:54 > 0:54:57she's pushed her client slightly out of her parameter,

0:54:57 > 0:55:00- but not too far.- So Jamie was asked for a Scandinavian retreat.

0:55:00 > 0:55:02Did he deliver on the brief?

0:55:02 > 0:55:04Well, he did deliver Scandinavian,

0:55:04 > 0:55:07but the brief also talked about traditional elements.

0:55:07 > 0:55:10For me, that's where he completely veered off

0:55:10 > 0:55:12into a far too contemporary interpretation.

0:55:12 > 0:55:16But the fact is, he was bursting with ideas and he's got it in him.

0:55:16 > 0:55:19The homeowner I know had some misgivings,

0:55:19 > 0:55:21to begin with - loved it.

0:55:21 > 0:55:24Loved it, loved it, loved it.

0:55:24 > 0:55:27- It seems incredibly close this time. - It is really close.

0:55:27 > 0:55:30And it's going to be a really difficult decision to make.

0:55:43 > 0:55:45So, designers, it doesn't get better than this.

0:55:45 > 0:55:48Look at this picture postcard landscape.

0:55:48 > 0:55:50It takes some gumption to rise to the challenge,

0:55:50 > 0:55:52but I think you four did.

0:55:52 > 0:55:54I just hope you've all really enjoyed

0:55:54 > 0:55:57designing for these charming country cottages.

0:55:57 > 0:56:00And I have to say, we've got four very strong designers

0:56:00 > 0:56:04and it's been quite a tough decision to make.

0:56:04 > 0:56:06One of you, though, has to go home

0:56:06 > 0:56:09and the designer going home this time

0:56:09 > 0:56:11is...

0:56:15 > 0:56:17..Rachel.

0:56:21 > 0:56:23- Aww!- Give her a hug!

0:56:25 > 0:56:27It's fine, it's fine! I'm relieved!

0:56:28 > 0:56:33A little disappointed, cos like I said, the process has been great.

0:56:33 > 0:56:36But there's also a little bit of relief

0:56:36 > 0:56:39that I kind of don't have to go through all of that again!

0:56:40 > 0:56:41- I love it!- Really?!

0:56:41 > 0:56:44- I really love it. - Oh, I'm so pleased!

0:56:44 > 0:56:46Losing Rachel has been one of the toughest choices,

0:56:46 > 0:56:49because her room was just gorgeous,

0:56:49 > 0:56:51but I didn't feel that she pushed it enough

0:56:51 > 0:56:54and that's what you have to do to stay in this competition.

0:56:54 > 0:56:56INDISTINCT CONVERSATION

0:56:56 > 0:57:01My overwhelming feeling going through to the next round

0:57:01 > 0:57:04is, I guess, grateful that I've achieved something

0:57:04 > 0:57:06from all the hard work.

0:57:06 > 0:57:09The whole thing - very, very well done.

0:57:09 > 0:57:12In the next round for Lily, she needs to manage her time,

0:57:12 > 0:57:16because she took too much on and the quality suffered a little bit.

0:57:16 > 0:57:18THEY CONSOLE RACHEL

0:57:19 > 0:57:22Absolutely over the moon and I kind of just want to get started

0:57:22 > 0:57:26finding the brief and what's to happen and what's to come.

0:57:26 > 0:57:29- Hi.- Hi! Really brilliant.- Great.

0:57:29 > 0:57:32I'm going to have to smarten up to live in it, I think. Jamie...

0:57:32 > 0:57:34- Thank you.- ..it's been a pleasure.

0:57:34 > 0:57:35For someone so young,

0:57:35 > 0:57:39Jamie already shows such a high level of competence,

0:57:39 > 0:57:42but he really needs to learn how to nail that brief

0:57:42 > 0:57:46and consider the people he's designing for and the place.

0:57:46 > 0:57:48INDISTINCT CHATTER

0:57:48 > 0:57:51One step at a time, see how far I go.

0:57:51 > 0:57:53If I get to keep doing it, then brilliant.

0:57:53 > 0:57:56And if I don't, then it's been a blast.

0:57:56 > 0:57:59Moving forward, Sarah needs to improve her presentation skills.

0:57:59 > 0:58:01She didn't keep her client with her

0:58:01 > 0:58:03and she had to make some changes that she wasn't happy with.

0:58:03 > 0:58:06- Now I've got to do it again! - You have, you've got to do it again.

0:58:06 > 0:58:09- Will it be green? - No.- Oh!- Don't you start!

0:58:11 > 0:58:15Next time, unusual half houses in north London,
