0:00:02 > 0:00:04I'm constantly taken aback by the huge variety of property styles
0:00:04 > 0:00:07in Britain, from character timber-framed cottages,
0:00:07 > 0:00:10to grand townhouses.
0:00:10 > 0:00:13But sometimes the insides don't live up to the expectations
0:00:13 > 0:00:15on the outside.
0:00:15 > 0:00:18So we've gathered together the most talented amateur interior designers,
0:00:18 > 0:00:20who think they could be the next big thing,
0:00:20 > 0:00:22to show us how it's done.
0:00:22 > 0:00:24But it's not as easy as it looks.
0:00:24 > 0:00:25Oh, no. I'm panicking.
0:00:25 > 0:00:28- SMASHING - Ooh!
0:00:28 > 0:00:30It's a bit make or break, really.
0:00:30 > 0:00:32Across three knock-out episodes,
0:00:32 > 0:00:35a group of designers will compete for one place in Finals Week.
0:00:35 > 0:00:37Oh, why isn't it easy?
0:00:37 > 0:00:40- I just like to do things properly. - HAMMERING
0:00:40 > 0:00:43Ooh, that's wonderful!
0:00:43 > 0:00:45Judging them, two industry experts -
0:00:45 > 0:00:47Daniel Hopwood...
0:00:47 > 0:00:48Having survived Round One,
0:00:48 > 0:00:51I want to see that the designers have listened to our feedback.
0:00:51 > 0:00:53And Sophie Robinson...
0:00:53 > 0:00:54They are going to have to
0:00:54 > 0:00:57take it up a notch, if they are going to stay in this competition.
0:00:57 > 0:01:00They'll be scrutinising presentation skills...
0:01:00 > 0:01:02That's not the way to present to somebody.
0:01:02 > 0:01:04..artistic flair...
0:01:04 > 0:01:06- There's not much ambition, no. - Yeah, it's really disappointing.
0:01:06 > 0:01:09..and how well they deliver their brief.
0:01:09 > 0:01:11Pretty amazing transformation.
0:01:11 > 0:01:13Absolutely beautiful.
0:01:13 > 0:01:16In the finals, the best will face giants of the design world.
0:01:16 > 0:01:17Oliver Heath...
0:01:17 > 0:01:18Oh, my word!
0:01:18 > 0:01:20..Orla Kiely...
0:01:20 > 0:01:21It does look quite rough.
0:01:21 > 0:01:23..and Kelly Hoppen.
0:01:23 > 0:01:24I want perfection.
0:01:25 > 0:01:28But only one can be crowned winner
0:01:28 > 0:01:30of the Great Interior Design Challenge.
0:01:36 > 0:01:40Last time, four designers battled to impress the judges.
0:01:40 > 0:01:41Here it goes!
0:01:41 > 0:01:43It slightly rubs me up the wrong way.
0:01:43 > 0:01:45One went home.
0:01:45 > 0:01:47Three of them made it through.
0:01:47 > 0:01:49We got there. And I absolutely love it.
0:01:49 > 0:01:52I've given everything I can to this design.
0:01:52 > 0:01:54I'm pleased with the whole thing.
0:01:54 > 0:01:57Now, things are getting even tougher.
0:01:57 > 0:01:59Our amateurs will be taking on a kitchen each
0:01:59 > 0:02:03in three period half houses in north-east London.
0:02:03 > 0:02:04The clients are more exacting...
0:02:04 > 0:02:07- PHONE:- The thing is, I really don't like vinyl.- OK.
0:02:07 > 0:02:09..and the judges' expectations higher...
0:02:09 > 0:02:11Have you ever seen that done before?
0:02:11 > 0:02:12No. It's weird.
0:02:12 > 0:02:15..as the three designers fight for a place in the next round.
0:02:15 > 0:02:18Where the sink was, it's rotten.
0:02:18 > 0:02:19Hold on, what is that?
0:02:19 > 0:02:21It's kind of a race against time.
0:02:21 > 0:02:23One more must go.
0:02:23 > 0:02:25The designer going home will be...
0:02:34 > 0:02:37The backdrop for this challenge is the leafy Warner Estate
0:02:37 > 0:02:39in Walthamstow, north-east London,
0:02:39 > 0:02:43built between the 1880s and the 1930s.
0:02:43 > 0:02:45These suburbs weren't just for the middle classes.
0:02:45 > 0:02:48This might look like a well-to-do Victorian terrace,
0:02:48 > 0:02:50but it was actually built as half houses,
0:02:50 > 0:02:53pre-divided into flats, affordable flats,
0:02:53 > 0:02:55for the working classes.
0:02:55 > 0:02:57Now, our designers will take on the mammoth task
0:02:57 > 0:02:59of transforming a kitchen each.
0:03:09 > 0:03:11- Hi, team.- All right?
0:03:11 > 0:03:13The designers have been working on a brief from their homeowners
0:03:13 > 0:03:15for the past week.
0:03:15 > 0:03:17The competition's definitely getting tougher.
0:03:17 > 0:03:20There's a lot more pressure on improving from the last round.
0:03:20 > 0:03:22Kind of pushing yourself more as a designer.
0:03:22 > 0:03:24They have a budget of £1,000
0:03:24 > 0:03:27and just three days to complete their transformations.
0:03:27 > 0:03:31The colour would be teal on this wall.
0:03:31 > 0:03:33'Last time, I tried to do quite a lot.'
0:03:33 > 0:03:37But, this time around, I think I've pared back.
0:03:37 > 0:03:39They've also each got a small team to help them,
0:03:39 > 0:03:41including a builder and a decorator.
0:03:41 > 0:03:43This is your list.
0:03:43 > 0:03:46The first thing, it's in order of importance, obviously.
0:03:46 > 0:03:47I like that. That's great.
0:03:47 > 0:03:49LAUGHTER
0:03:49 > 0:03:50- 'God, I'm back.' - LAUGHTER
0:03:50 > 0:03:52Here we go again.
0:03:52 > 0:03:55'A kitchen, which is going to be a nightmare.'
0:03:55 > 0:03:56I'm up for it. Bring it on.
0:03:59 > 0:04:04First up is garden designer Sarah from Hove.
0:04:04 > 0:04:07SHE SINGS: # Goldfinger... #
0:04:07 > 0:04:08LAUGHTER
0:04:08 > 0:04:10Last time, Sarah lost a green ceiling,
0:04:10 > 0:04:13which was a crucial part of her design,
0:04:13 > 0:04:16because she didn't keep the homeowner on board.
0:04:16 > 0:04:20This time, I don't want any of those design elements disappearing.
0:04:20 > 0:04:22The kitchen Sarah is in charge of
0:04:22 > 0:04:24was in desperate need of a redesign.
0:04:24 > 0:04:26And, before she got her hands on it,
0:04:26 > 0:04:29judges Sophie and Daniel assessed its potential.
0:04:32 > 0:04:35This kitchen clearly needs a little bit of love.
0:04:35 > 0:04:36It certainly does.
0:04:36 > 0:04:40I mean, we're going to need new worktops, new doors.
0:04:40 > 0:04:42You know, doing all of that,
0:04:42 > 0:04:44I think is going to be mega challenging.
0:04:44 > 0:04:47Sarah's homeowner asked for a traditional country kitchen,
0:04:47 > 0:04:51with neutral styling and plenty of storage.
0:04:51 > 0:04:55This is more about design solutions, rather than just dressing the space.
0:04:55 > 0:04:58And Sarah loves to use colour and quite bold colour.
0:04:58 > 0:05:00So I will be looking out to see
0:05:00 > 0:05:03if she's really thought that one through.
0:05:03 > 0:05:06This time, Sarah has chosen a restrained scheme
0:05:06 > 0:05:08of cream and duck egg blue,
0:05:08 > 0:05:10with a selection of natural fabrics.
0:05:10 > 0:05:12So, I've got your board here.
0:05:12 > 0:05:16- I'm going to show you the designs that I've come up with.- Right.
0:05:16 > 0:05:19As well as needing sign-off from her client, Karen,
0:05:19 > 0:05:21Sarah also had to impress the judges,
0:05:21 > 0:05:25since all the designers will be ranked on their presentation skills.
0:05:25 > 0:05:27- This hessian here...- Yeah.
0:05:27 > 0:05:29..I want to cover this back wall in.
0:05:29 > 0:05:32Oh, right. So it's interesting, putting this on the wall.
0:05:32 > 0:05:36And then, in front of that, you'll have the shelves and the lights.
0:05:36 > 0:05:37I like the colours.
0:05:37 > 0:05:41Thumbs-up for the colour, but she has unusual plans for the cupboards.
0:05:41 > 0:05:45- This lovely, soft stripe cotton... - Yes, I like that. Yeah.
0:05:45 > 0:05:48..that's actually going to be for around the front of the cooker
0:05:48 > 0:05:50- and the washing machine.- Oh, wow.
0:05:50 > 0:05:51And hide all of those
0:05:51 > 0:05:54and, in some places, hide a little bit of the cupboards.
0:05:54 > 0:05:56Right. Okey-doke.
0:05:56 > 0:05:59So she's trying to create a softness in the kitchen,
0:05:59 > 0:06:01so adding fabric to walls and units.
0:06:01 > 0:06:03It's soft, I grant her that,
0:06:03 > 0:06:05but it's not hugely practical.
0:06:08 > 0:06:09With the work underway...
0:06:09 > 0:06:11She's asked us to deal with this in here,
0:06:11 > 0:06:13- cos she says this isn't working. - Yeah.
0:06:13 > 0:06:15..it seems it's not just the judges
0:06:15 > 0:06:17that are dubious of Sarah's curtains.
0:06:17 > 0:06:19The curtains are going to be
0:06:19 > 0:06:22over the washing machine and the oven.
0:06:22 > 0:06:24And underneath the sink.
0:06:24 > 0:06:26I'm not sure whether...
0:06:26 > 0:06:29Yes, no, I think they're going to end there.
0:06:29 > 0:06:30Yeah, I'm not...
0:06:30 > 0:06:33Perhaps not 100% clear on that.
0:06:40 > 0:06:42We've got some leftover scaffolding about,
0:06:42 > 0:06:45- so we could build something on top of the drawer.- OK.
0:06:45 > 0:06:48The second designer is 21-year-old Jamie,
0:06:48 > 0:06:51a carer and shop assistant from County Durham.
0:06:51 > 0:06:54Last time, Jamie dropped in a project
0:06:54 > 0:06:58that didn't have any thought to either homeowner or building.
0:06:58 > 0:07:01This time, I want to see a lot more consideration.
0:07:02 > 0:07:06Jamie's second heat challenge is to create a kitchen-cum-living area
0:07:06 > 0:07:09in what was an already cluttered room.
0:07:11 > 0:07:13Charming little kitchen. But...
0:07:13 > 0:07:16all this has got to go, because this is turning into a living room.
0:07:16 > 0:07:18You don't necessarily want to sit on your sofa
0:07:18 > 0:07:20and look your cereal packets, so a lot of stuff
0:07:20 > 0:07:21needs to get hidden away.
0:07:21 > 0:07:24The homeowners not only want a multi-purpose room,
0:07:24 > 0:07:26they also want a farmers' market theme,
0:07:26 > 0:07:28bringing the outside in.
0:07:28 > 0:07:30This is the perfect brief for Jamie,
0:07:30 > 0:07:32because we know he's got bags of style,
0:07:32 > 0:07:36but what we want to see from him is that he can understand
0:07:36 > 0:07:39how people live and deliver a design that meets their needs.
0:07:39 > 0:07:42But, to get this room to work,
0:07:42 > 0:07:45you have to have a level of maturity as a designer,
0:07:45 > 0:07:47so I'm just hoping he comes up with something interesting.
0:07:49 > 0:07:52What Jamie had come up with was a botanical green theme,
0:07:52 > 0:07:56incorporating old vegetable crates and terracotta accents.
0:07:56 > 0:07:58We start off with going through the mood boards,
0:07:58 > 0:08:01the different colours and different objects I put on there.
0:08:01 > 0:08:03But, before he got to work,
0:08:03 > 0:08:06he had to run his layout past homeowner Alex.
0:08:06 > 0:08:08This is where the new sofa is going to be.
0:08:08 > 0:08:09This is where the TV is going to go.
0:08:09 > 0:08:12And then I've got some apple crates as well, which I want to be
0:08:12 > 0:08:15cutting in half, so you can store your fruit and veg on the wall.
0:08:15 > 0:08:16Ah!
0:08:16 > 0:08:18Jamie also used the building as inspiration.
0:08:18 > 0:08:21And another thing, I noticed that the Warner houses,
0:08:21 > 0:08:24- when they were first built, all the doors were painted green.- Yes.
0:08:24 > 0:08:25So that's kind of the wall colour for that.
0:08:25 > 0:08:28And, obviously, around the outside of the doors,
0:08:28 > 0:08:30it's kind of the nice terracotta red brick,
0:08:30 > 0:08:32so that's why have chosen that accent.
0:08:32 > 0:08:34It's cos I like the terracotta.
0:08:34 > 0:08:35Oh, it looks great. Good luck.
0:08:35 > 0:08:37- Thank you. - LAUGHTER
0:08:37 > 0:08:41He has completely changed from his last presentation.
0:08:41 > 0:08:44He's been much more thoughtful about the homeowner
0:08:44 > 0:08:45and also the architecture, too.
0:08:45 > 0:08:48He was referring to the original colours.
0:08:48 > 0:08:51The thing is with green, you've got to add some light and shade with it.
0:08:51 > 0:08:53Maybe a bit of white to freshen it up?
0:08:56 > 0:08:57WHIRRING
0:08:57 > 0:08:58With work underway,
0:08:58 > 0:09:02Jamie's homeowner has some changes to the work surface height.
0:09:02 > 0:09:05- Cos I've got a three-and-a-half year old...- Yeah.
0:09:05 > 0:09:08- ..and they're only...about that tall.- Yeah.
0:09:08 > 0:09:10- It's nice to have something that's their...- Something lower?
0:09:10 > 0:09:13- ..something that's their height. - Whatever's best for you.
0:09:13 > 0:09:16So I've just spoken to Alex and she's not... She's happy with it,
0:09:16 > 0:09:18but she wants these sections at the side lower,
0:09:18 > 0:09:20so the kids can kind of have access to them.
0:09:20 > 0:09:22- So if we just drop it, say, five centimetres...- OK.
0:09:22 > 0:09:24below from what...
0:09:25 > 0:09:26- A bit lower than that?- Erm...
0:09:26 > 0:09:28- You're going to have the worktop on top.- Yeah.
0:09:28 > 0:09:31- Say ten centimetres.- Ten centimetres? So it's a decent step,
0:09:31 > 0:09:33- rather than it look like we made a mistake.- Yeah.
0:09:33 > 0:09:35Every kind of thing that happens
0:09:35 > 0:09:37is a learning curve for me. And I'm learning
0:09:37 > 0:09:40and my confidence is growing, as a designer and as a person,
0:09:40 > 0:09:42so it's a brilliant experience. Yeah.
0:09:46 > 0:09:48But that is kind of...
0:09:48 > 0:09:50Also growing in confidence is our final designer,
0:09:50 > 0:09:52photographer Lily from London.
0:09:52 > 0:09:55Later on, I will paint some squares,
0:09:55 > 0:09:58or you can paint some squares.
0:09:58 > 0:10:00Lily is hugely creative.
0:10:00 > 0:10:02But last time she just made far too much.
0:10:02 > 0:10:05This time, it's about quality, not quantity.
0:10:07 > 0:10:08In this round, Lily is taking on
0:10:08 > 0:10:11what was a rather loud, but uninspired,
0:10:11 > 0:10:12top flat kitchen.
0:10:15 > 0:10:16Rather nice kitchen.
0:10:16 > 0:10:17It just needs the...
0:10:17 > 0:10:20finishing touches, the flourishes.
0:10:20 > 0:10:21It does kind of look like one of those
0:10:21 > 0:10:24- shop-bought kitchens, doesn't it?- Mm, exactly.
0:10:24 > 0:10:27So, really, I think, to bring some creativity to this room,
0:10:27 > 0:10:29to make this kitchen feel a little bit more special,
0:10:29 > 0:10:31that would be the treat.
0:10:31 > 0:10:34Lily's homeowners want to avoid any dark colours,
0:10:34 > 0:10:38so their brief is for a bright '70s retro kitchen/diner.
0:10:39 > 0:10:42So we really are looking out for the detail on this one.
0:10:42 > 0:10:45Yeah, but steady. I don't want too much extraneous detail.
0:10:45 > 0:10:48I think the theme for Lily is less is more.
0:10:49 > 0:10:53But, as usual, Lily was bursting with ideas.
0:10:53 > 0:10:55Her design focused on zoning.
0:10:55 > 0:10:58In the dining area, she chose a bright lime green scheme,
0:10:58 > 0:11:01with retro furniture and '70s style wall art
0:11:01 > 0:11:04for homeowners Yasmin and Sam.
0:11:04 > 0:11:06So I thought that I would paint
0:11:06 > 0:11:10an Orla Kiely inspired design on this wall here.
0:11:10 > 0:11:14Her plan for the kitchen was to give it a dark teal paint job.
0:11:14 > 0:11:17A step away from the bright colours requested.
0:11:17 > 0:11:20- So will all the walls be teal, then? Or is it...?- No.
0:11:20 > 0:11:22- Just this wall, this wall. - OK, so just this back wall?
0:11:22 > 0:11:26- Until here.- OK.- And then this will be the pale green walls.- OK.
0:11:26 > 0:11:29- I would like to create a trim around the ceiling.- Right.
0:11:29 > 0:11:31- It will be the same colour as the wall.- Yeah.
0:11:31 > 0:11:33- So it just takes the edge off.- OK.
0:11:33 > 0:11:36- You know, when...- Will it make it feel quite enclosed?
0:11:36 > 0:11:38- Like make it feel like a box? - But it's not going to feel gloomy,
0:11:38 > 0:11:40- so don't worry about that.- Yeah.
0:11:40 > 0:11:42And, also change the flooring into...
0:11:42 > 0:11:45- an oak laminate flooring.- Yay! - SAM CHUCKLES
0:11:45 > 0:11:48- Yeah. That'll really brighten it up a bit more.- Yeah.
0:11:48 > 0:11:50Lily is throwing masses of ideas at that room.
0:11:50 > 0:11:55She's taking that dark colour over and onto the ceiling, partially.
0:11:55 > 0:11:56What is the reason for that?
0:11:56 > 0:11:59I was going to ask you that. Have you ever seen that done before?
0:11:59 > 0:12:02No, cos, by painting the ceiling darker on the edges,
0:12:02 > 0:12:05it's going to reduce the sort of outline of the room,
0:12:05 > 0:12:07which is going to make it feel a lot smaller.
0:12:07 > 0:12:10- It is going to look weird, isn't it? - It's weird.
0:12:10 > 0:12:12So it will be about six inches from the ceiling,
0:12:12 > 0:12:15the same colour as the wall, going all the way around.
0:12:15 > 0:12:16Does that make sense?
0:12:16 > 0:12:20Lily's unusual ceiling border isn't only confusing the charges.
0:12:20 > 0:12:22Her decorator is pretty baffled, too.
0:12:22 > 0:12:24Where do I start the line?
0:12:24 > 0:12:26Do I start the line back here on the very end of the wall?
0:12:26 > 0:12:28- Yes. Yeah, yeah, yeah. Yeah.- Continuous?
0:12:28 > 0:12:30- Continuous. All the way around.- Then it bring around,
0:12:30 > 0:12:33- in line with that frame there. - Er, not in line with the frame.
0:12:33 > 0:12:35So in line with the back of the fridge,
0:12:35 > 0:12:36where that unit is on the wall.
0:12:36 > 0:12:38And then I've got make a dead straight line
0:12:38 > 0:12:40- and continue the teal on the ceiling?- Yes.
0:12:40 > 0:12:42- Yes. Yes.- All right.- Yeah?
0:12:42 > 0:12:44- OK. Thank you. - It's going to be fun.
0:12:44 > 0:12:46LAUGHTER
0:12:48 > 0:12:51The contestants are cracking on with their designs.
0:12:51 > 0:12:53Maybe a tiny bit higher?
0:12:53 > 0:12:56But they know they're about to be judged on their mood boards
0:12:56 > 0:12:58and presentation skills.
0:12:59 > 0:13:00I came last last time.
0:13:02 > 0:13:04So, actually, theoretically...
0:13:04 > 0:13:06the only way is up.
0:13:06 > 0:13:09I don't really have any ideas of what they're going to say, just,
0:13:09 > 0:13:14hopefully, that they've noticed more confidence in me, hopefully, maybe.
0:13:14 > 0:13:17All of this has got to be done so let's do it.
0:13:17 > 0:13:19Can I apply some lippy on?
0:13:19 > 0:13:22With one designer going home at the end of this project,
0:13:22 > 0:13:26how well they do here is crucial.
0:13:26 > 0:13:28So, we're going to start with you, Sarah.
0:13:28 > 0:13:30What really impressed us
0:13:30 > 0:13:32about your presentation were your perspective drawings.
0:13:32 > 0:13:35However, I think you could have gone one step further
0:13:35 > 0:13:36and done some elevations.
0:13:36 > 0:13:38For example, where you're remodelling the kitchen with
0:13:38 > 0:13:41curtains and doors and open shelving, it wasn't
0:13:41 > 0:13:44made particularly clear how that's going to work and, as a result,
0:13:44 > 0:13:46at the moment, your homeowner doesn't understand
0:13:46 > 0:13:48how that's going to work.
0:13:48 > 0:13:51Lily, I loved the confidence in your presentation -
0:13:51 > 0:13:53a vast improvement from last time -
0:13:53 > 0:13:57and I liked the idea of you using the three boards to help
0:13:57 > 0:14:01the homeowner visualise your design.
0:14:01 > 0:14:04Jamie, what we really liked about your board, it was very clear
0:14:04 > 0:14:08and concise, but you could have taken it one step further.
0:14:08 > 0:14:10I would have liked to have seen some more visuals, some,
0:14:10 > 0:14:12some photos or sketches,
0:14:12 > 0:14:15or illustrations of how this kind of farmers' market style
0:14:15 > 0:14:17is actually really going to look.
0:14:20 > 0:14:23Designers, it's essential that you have a good presentation board
0:14:23 > 0:14:26in order to communicate your design,
0:14:26 > 0:14:28and one of you was particularly good at that...
0:14:34 > 0:14:37..and that was Lily. Lily, you come first.
0:14:38 > 0:14:42The other two, you've got room for improvement.
0:14:43 > 0:14:46I was joint-last instead of last.
0:14:46 > 0:14:50If there is a next time, then maybe I'll build the room
0:14:50 > 0:14:54in their back garden first and they can walk around it.
0:14:54 > 0:14:56I need to push myself now to, kind of, show them
0:14:56 > 0:14:59that I can achieve something brilliant at the end.
0:14:59 > 0:15:03They thought I'm a lot more confident in presenting
0:15:03 > 0:15:05my ideas, cos that's one of the things that they said -
0:15:05 > 0:15:08I just need to really push forward with my ideas - and if that
0:15:08 > 0:15:11came across, even if I didn't feel it, then that's brilliant.
0:15:14 > 0:15:16Confidence, even audacity,
0:15:16 > 0:15:20was what led to these houses being built in the first place.
0:15:20 > 0:15:24The Warner Estate is made up of 4,000 similar redbrick homes.
0:15:24 > 0:15:28It was built across 50 years by the enterprising Warner family
0:15:28 > 0:15:30who once lived at the heart of the estate.
0:15:32 > 0:15:34Blink, these days, and you might miss it,
0:15:34 > 0:15:38but that was the family seat of the Warners, built in 1813.
0:15:38 > 0:15:41Its elegant, Greek columns would once have looked out over
0:15:41 > 0:15:43vast landscaped parkland.
0:15:43 > 0:15:46Thomas Courtenay Theydon Warner, though, was a visionary
0:15:46 > 0:15:50who saw an opportunity to build on the family land to accommodate
0:15:50 > 0:15:53the swelling ranks of people escaping the city for the suburbs.
0:15:57 > 0:16:00The Warner family created a standard look across the estate.
0:16:00 > 0:16:03Doors and windows are painted a standard green and cream.
0:16:03 > 0:16:05There are two originals behind me here.
0:16:05 > 0:16:07And they branded the ends of buildings
0:16:07 > 0:16:11and their gables with their monogram "W" or "WE",
0:16:11 > 0:16:14a logo that marked out the quality rental homes
0:16:14 > 0:16:17provided for you by the Warner family.
0:16:23 > 0:16:26As day one progresses, the designers are also adding their own
0:16:26 > 0:16:28design details to these half-houses.
0:16:30 > 0:16:34In the back garden, Sarah is fashioning a wire lampshade.
0:16:34 > 0:16:37I've never made one of these before,
0:16:37 > 0:16:40so this is a brand-new invention.
0:16:41 > 0:16:45THUNDER RUMBLES
0:16:45 > 0:16:49- RAIN SPLASHES - Oh, here comes the rain.
0:16:49 > 0:16:52THUNDER RUMBLES
0:16:52 > 0:16:54Is that clouds' thunders?
0:16:54 > 0:16:58The weather is trying its best to blow the designers off course...
0:16:58 > 0:17:00THUNDER RUMBLES
0:17:00 > 0:17:04That was the gods telling us to stop making the kitchen.
0:17:13 > 0:17:15..but a little bit of rain is nothing
0:17:15 > 0:17:17compared to decades of damp...
0:17:17 > 0:17:18Oh, dear.
0:17:18 > 0:17:20..on a chipboard kitchen.
0:17:20 > 0:17:24Can we build batten up the back and front?
0:17:24 > 0:17:27- And then...- Sarah's simple job of replacing the worktops has turned
0:17:27 > 0:17:32into the major, time-consuming task of rebuilding the whole cupboard.
0:17:32 > 0:17:36Where the sink was has been leaking for years, I think,
0:17:36 > 0:17:38and it's rotten so it's all got to come out.
0:17:44 > 0:17:49This is not easy right now cos I can't actually get on with anything.
0:17:49 > 0:17:51The weather means we can't work outside,
0:17:51 > 0:17:54so we can't get all the tools up and running,
0:17:54 > 0:17:57and we're having to come up with solutions to replace
0:17:57 > 0:18:00the whole back section of the kitchen,
0:18:00 > 0:18:03which is a bit of a nightmare.
0:18:03 > 0:18:06Overcoming problems quickly is something Sarah experienced
0:18:06 > 0:18:09in round one when her clients didn't like the colour...
0:18:09 > 0:18:12I now know I'm not going to be able to live with
0:18:12 > 0:18:14the ceilings in this colour.
0:18:14 > 0:18:18Painting back over the dark colour is going to be tricky.
0:18:18 > 0:18:21..but her solution, to paint the ceiling white,
0:18:21 > 0:18:23meant a compromise to her design.
0:18:23 > 0:18:26It's not ideal, but it is what it is,
0:18:26 > 0:18:29and I can't do anything about it now.
0:18:33 > 0:18:35What I have here...
0:18:35 > 0:18:38Now, Sarah needs to come up with a plan to fix the rotten cupboards
0:18:38 > 0:18:42that pleases her homeowner but also works with her scheme.
0:18:42 > 0:18:46What I want to do here is actually build in framework out of timber
0:18:46 > 0:18:48and then have timber shelves going along.
0:18:48 > 0:18:51There's no denying that Sarah's project is hugely challenging,
0:18:51 > 0:18:54but she's thinking on her feet, she's coming up with solutions.
0:18:54 > 0:18:57She's dealing with it in a really calm and collected way
0:18:57 > 0:18:59and, I have to say, I'm really impressed.
0:18:59 > 0:19:02- I'm so pleased you've got rid of this...- Oh, you are?
0:19:02 > 0:19:04- Oh, yes, it was an eyesore.- OK.
0:19:04 > 0:19:08I don't think we had a choice. It fell down when we took it out!
0:19:11 > 0:19:14It's not just Sarah having to problem-solve.
0:19:14 > 0:19:18Squeezing a living room and a kitchen into a smallish room
0:19:18 > 0:19:22means Jamie is coming up with space-saving ideas.
0:19:22 > 0:19:24This is the storage boxes which are going to house the toys,
0:19:24 > 0:19:26and I wanted to, kind of, give it a padded top
0:19:26 > 0:19:28so they can use it as a seating.
0:19:28 > 0:19:30Creating something that can be used for loads of different things
0:19:30 > 0:19:35was really important and hopefully I've ticked that box.
0:19:35 > 0:19:37Jamie learned in the last round that he's not always
0:19:37 > 0:19:40so considerate of both the room and his client.
0:19:40 > 0:19:41Oh, are you liking it, or...?
0:19:41 > 0:19:44- I'm slightly concerned that... - Right.
0:19:44 > 0:19:47- ..that it's slightly more modern than we were expecting.- Right.
0:19:47 > 0:19:50DANIEL: What the brief was was traditional Scandinavian,
0:19:50 > 0:19:53- and he didn't read the word "traditional".- Traditional.
0:19:53 > 0:19:55I feel like I've sort of, missed something,
0:19:55 > 0:19:58kind of, researching, kind of, traditional. I don't know.
0:19:58 > 0:20:00I feel really sick.
0:20:00 > 0:20:03But he impressed the judges with his bold look.
0:20:03 > 0:20:06First of all, I've just got to say, what a transformation.
0:20:06 > 0:20:08I like this, sort of, stencilling on the shutters.
0:20:08 > 0:20:11It almost looks like a Fair Isle jumper.
0:20:11 > 0:20:13TOOL BUZZES
0:20:13 > 0:20:15Today, Jamie thinks he's got it all covered
0:20:15 > 0:20:19but the judges are concerned he's missed something with the layout.
0:20:19 > 0:20:21- OK, so, TV's there...- Yeah.
0:20:21 > 0:20:24- ..and unit below. - Your TV's there?- Yes.
0:20:24 > 0:20:26Cos on your plan, the sofa was there.
0:20:26 > 0:20:29So, the sofa was here, so it's kind of an L sofa.
0:20:29 > 0:20:32It's an L shape. What's on that? What's on this wall here?
0:20:32 > 0:20:34It's going to be crates, so it's going to be like a herb wall,
0:20:34 > 0:20:36grow your own herbs and fruit and veg on the wall.
0:20:36 > 0:20:39Ah, OK, so you can sit on the sofa and watch the herbs.
0:20:41 > 0:20:43I do appreciate Jamie's enthusiasm
0:20:43 > 0:20:48but his youthful naivete means he's missing some of the fundamentals.
0:20:48 > 0:20:51- It's called getting the TV on the right wall.- Mmm. Mmm.
0:20:51 > 0:20:55You're going to be sitting at the sofa looking at a herb garden.
0:20:59 > 0:21:03Also dabbling with an off-the-wall idea, Lily's painted coving is
0:21:03 > 0:21:08going up and she's giving some vintage chairs a retro face-lift.
0:21:08 > 0:21:13OK, this is an original 1950s-1960s teak chair,
0:21:13 > 0:21:15so I'm just going to cover over it.
0:21:18 > 0:21:21I enjoy being creative a lot and making with my hands
0:21:21 > 0:21:26but it is time-consuming and it does put a lot of pressure on you.
0:21:29 > 0:21:31In the last round, Lily tried to impress
0:21:31 > 0:21:34by taking on a multitude of crafting projects...
0:21:34 > 0:21:37I've put so much in this competition -
0:21:37 > 0:21:40so much planning and sleepless nights.
0:21:40 > 0:21:43I didn't realise it would take this much work.
0:21:43 > 0:21:47..but, ultimately, the judges thought less would have been more.
0:21:47 > 0:21:49Maybe there's just too many gimmicks.
0:21:51 > 0:21:53You've painted a border on the ceiling.
0:21:53 > 0:21:55What's the reason behind that?
0:21:55 > 0:21:59- Instead of buying a coving to make the edges disappear...- Mm-hmm.
0:21:59 > 0:22:01..I'll just paint. I'll paint it, so...
0:22:01 > 0:22:04So it's, sort of, visually, almost lifting the ceiling up higher?
0:22:04 > 0:22:06That's one of the things,
0:22:06 > 0:22:09but also because they wanted this fresh, contemporary,
0:22:09 > 0:22:13but homely and inviting, and I wanted that kind of cocooning.
0:22:13 > 0:22:16I'm pretending to understand you but I don't,
0:22:16 > 0:22:18but you said it with such confidence
0:22:18 > 0:22:21that I'm going to actually believe that it's going to be a great idea.
0:22:21 > 0:22:23- How about that, Lily? - OK, that'll be great.
0:22:23 > 0:22:25When Lily described that ceiling border,
0:22:25 > 0:22:28I really wasn't sure about it but, now it's up,
0:22:28 > 0:22:31it actually works and looks rather cool.
0:22:34 > 0:22:38It's not just their schemes the designers are being tested on -
0:22:38 > 0:22:42they're also getting a huge surprise, receiving a raw material
0:22:42 > 0:22:45to incorporate into the rooms, to test their creativity.
0:22:47 > 0:22:50- Hello, Lily.- Hi. - You know the routine.
0:22:50 > 0:22:53- 24 hours to turn this copper wire... - Oh.
0:22:53 > 0:22:55..and some black and silver wire
0:22:55 > 0:22:58- into something that is integrated into the room.- OK.
0:22:58 > 0:23:01- That's kind of perfect for me today. - There's your challenge, then.
0:23:01 > 0:23:04But what I'm really hoping you're going to do with that
0:23:04 > 0:23:05is be really creative.
0:23:05 > 0:23:07And we'll be looking forward to judging it.
0:23:07 > 0:23:10- Good luck.- Thanks.
0:23:10 > 0:23:11Wire! More wire!
0:23:14 > 0:23:16How clever and creative they are...
0:23:16 > 0:23:18What am I doing?
0:23:18 > 0:23:22..will have a huge impact on the judges' final decision.
0:23:22 > 0:23:23Slinky copper...
0:23:23 > 0:23:25As soon as I, kind of, saw them,
0:23:25 > 0:23:27the thing that, kind of, popped into my head is,
0:23:27 > 0:23:30kind of, like a farmers' market basket that they store eggs in.
0:23:30 > 0:23:32But first, loads of painting to do.
0:23:33 > 0:23:36The judges will see their ideas later on.
0:23:40 > 0:23:44As day one comes to a close, the designers are one step closer
0:23:44 > 0:23:48to finding out who will leave at the end of this round.
0:23:48 > 0:23:51I've had cupboards literally dissolve on me when we've touched
0:23:51 > 0:23:55- them today, so we've got a lot of building work to do tomorrow.- Oh.
0:23:55 > 0:23:58While Jamie is full of youthful enthusiasm...
0:23:58 > 0:24:00I'm just excited to get started in the morning.
0:24:00 > 0:24:03I just don't want to go home. I'd rather stay.
0:24:03 > 0:24:06..and Lily is weathering what is thrown at her...
0:24:06 > 0:24:07We've had some sun,
0:24:07 > 0:24:10we've had some rain but we did start on the painting
0:24:10 > 0:24:13and it's, like, a weight lifted.
0:24:13 > 0:24:16..Sarah is left having a night on the tiles.
0:24:16 > 0:24:21There's nothing I love more at 8.30pm on a Thursday evening
0:24:21 > 0:24:23than to be scrubbing someone else's tiles.
0:24:36 > 0:24:38After a few kitchen sink issues,
0:24:38 > 0:24:41all three designers are forging ahead, but there's still
0:24:41 > 0:24:45plenty to do before their rooms are ready to be revealed.
0:24:45 > 0:24:48With one designer due to leave the competition after
0:24:48 > 0:24:51the rooms are judged tomorrow, timings are crucial.
0:24:51 > 0:24:53- Good morning, guys. - Good morning!- Morning.
0:24:53 > 0:24:55OK, lots to do today.
0:24:55 > 0:24:57My list is as long as my arm.
0:24:57 > 0:24:58It's kind of a race against time.
0:24:58 > 0:25:01We need to get things done so we can lay the floor.
0:25:01 > 0:25:03It's all about, kind of, timetable-juggling.
0:25:03 > 0:25:05Today is the longest day,
0:25:05 > 0:25:07erm, so I'm just excited to, kind of, see what today brings.
0:25:07 > 0:25:09Yesterday, Sarah was set back,
0:25:09 > 0:25:13cos she had to rebuild the rotting cabinets for her country kitchen.
0:25:13 > 0:25:17I'd like to say I've got a fighting spirit, but I don't know today.
0:25:17 > 0:25:20There's a lot to do. Talk to me later.
0:25:20 > 0:25:23Later, I'll be like, "Yeah, I did it!"
0:25:23 > 0:25:26But, right now, yeah,
0:25:26 > 0:25:27a tiny bit worn down.
0:25:29 > 0:25:32Down but not out,
0:25:32 > 0:25:36Sarah is pushing on by creating a feature from natural-toned hessian
0:25:36 > 0:25:38stapled directly onto the wall...
0:25:39 > 0:25:40Beautiful!
0:25:40 > 0:25:45..a big departure from her usual bold colour choices.
0:25:45 > 0:25:46It's looking great.
0:25:46 > 0:25:47Really great.
0:25:47 > 0:25:49Perfect.
0:25:51 > 0:25:53Was there something last time that you got wrong that
0:25:53 > 0:25:55you've made sure you're not going to get wrong again?
0:25:55 > 0:25:57Mmm, I'm didn't go green this time.
0:25:57 > 0:25:59Yeah, no green.
0:25:59 > 0:26:02- Yeah.- What challenges has Walthamstow thrown up for you?
0:26:02 > 0:26:05It's totally not my style
0:26:05 > 0:26:10so it's a very pared-back, calm, soft palette.
0:26:10 > 0:26:13No pattern, really, to speak of.
0:26:13 > 0:26:16All the things that I live and breathe for.
0:26:16 > 0:26:19I couldn't resist myself.
0:26:22 > 0:26:25There's no holding back in Jamie's farmers' market kitchen.
0:26:25 > 0:26:29It's all go as the cupboards and walls get a coat of green paint
0:26:29 > 0:26:33but he is doing a U-turn on where to position the TV.
0:26:33 > 0:26:34I went back and thought about it,
0:26:34 > 0:26:37and I've decided to put the TV in the centre of the wall,
0:26:37 > 0:26:40so you can, kind of, view it from all angles of the sofa,
0:26:40 > 0:26:41which I think will work better than,
0:26:41 > 0:26:43kind of, having it the way I originally planned.
0:26:43 > 0:26:46Well, kind of, being the room, has, kind of...
0:26:46 > 0:26:48Yeah, you realise that the space is quite small
0:26:48 > 0:26:51and you need to, kind of, change things while you are here on-site.
0:26:51 > 0:26:55I'm so impressed that Jamie is thinking about his homeowners
0:26:55 > 0:26:59and designing this room around them,
0:26:59 > 0:27:01but I am concerned they've got a lot of stuff in that kitchen
0:27:01 > 0:27:04and I just don't know if he's going to get it all back in.
0:27:06 > 0:27:10He's not adding kitchen storage but has designed a TV cabinet
0:27:10 > 0:27:13from scaffolding board with a wallpapered back panel.
0:27:13 > 0:27:15Do you do wallpapering as well?
0:27:15 > 0:27:18Erm, I do, yeah. I don't... I don't do a lot of it.
0:27:18 > 0:27:21- No, just so that you can tell us how to do it.- Yeah.
0:27:21 > 0:27:23I've done it before myself but I just probably...
0:27:23 > 0:27:25I'm going to look like an idiot, doing it.
0:27:25 > 0:27:28But inexperience is no excuse not to give it a go.
0:27:28 > 0:27:31I've only, kind of, done little bits in my own home of wallpapering.
0:27:31 > 0:27:33I've never done it, like, properly, as, kind of,
0:27:33 > 0:27:35like this in someone else's house.
0:27:35 > 0:27:36And I've always had help from...
0:27:36 > 0:27:38My mam, kind of, learnt us how to do it, and...
0:27:38 > 0:27:40but, yeah, but hopefully it'll kind of work
0:27:40 > 0:27:44and there'll be no issues. Yeah.
0:27:47 > 0:27:49Lily is also taking a gamble,
0:27:49 > 0:27:54embarking on a time-consuming mural on the dining room wall.
0:27:54 > 0:27:56I had to get some kind of pattern in this room,
0:27:56 > 0:27:58rather than just plain.
0:27:58 > 0:27:59They said "quirky".
0:27:59 > 0:28:03They said they want a bit of quirky but not too wacky.
0:28:03 > 0:28:06I don't think this is wacky.
0:28:06 > 0:28:08Now you're on your second project, do you feel like
0:28:08 > 0:28:11you've inched closer to being a professional interior designer?
0:28:11 > 0:28:14I think I'm more confident with my ideas
0:28:14 > 0:28:15this time round, definitely.
0:28:15 > 0:28:18Erm, gosh, about professional, I don't know.
0:28:18 > 0:28:20How did you feel when you got the brief? What did you think of it?
0:28:20 > 0:28:25I have never designed or decorated a kitchen, even my own kitchen.
0:28:25 > 0:28:29It's... It's a huge amount of work but I'm actually enjoying it.
0:28:29 > 0:28:31Oh, steady.
0:28:33 > 0:28:35That huge workload has been added to,
0:28:35 > 0:28:38as Lily and the other designers have been asked to prove
0:28:38 > 0:28:43their creativity by integrating some wire into their schemes.
0:28:43 > 0:28:46I have no idea what I'm doing here, here, you know,
0:28:46 > 0:28:48as you can probably tell.
0:28:48 > 0:28:52How well they rise to this challenge will affect who stays
0:28:52 > 0:28:54and who leaves the competition.
0:28:54 > 0:28:57Jamie is moulding the wire to make an egg basket.
0:28:57 > 0:29:00There's, like, a million different things you could do
0:29:00 > 0:29:02with wire, but this was, kind of, the first thing that
0:29:02 > 0:29:05popped into my head and it fits with the scheme of the farmers' market.
0:29:05 > 0:29:09It does fit his theme, although, it looks a bit home-made.
0:29:09 > 0:29:11Yes, he's taking that farmers' market theme
0:29:11 > 0:29:13just a little bit too literally.
0:29:16 > 0:29:17Cool.
0:29:18 > 0:29:21I'm going to make a wind chime
0:29:21 > 0:29:26because that back door doesn't have any accessory on it.
0:29:26 > 0:29:29The other thing I could do is make a vase out of it.
0:29:29 > 0:29:32True to form, Lily can't resist stretching herself,
0:29:32 > 0:29:35so is making both a wind chime and a vase.
0:29:35 > 0:29:37I'll put some flowers in it or something in it
0:29:37 > 0:29:41and they probably will not hate it so much.
0:29:41 > 0:29:42Typical Lily, doing more than one project.
0:29:42 > 0:29:45Yeah, but none of them work for me. Have you seen that wind chime?
0:29:45 > 0:29:49All it's going to do is knock you over the head with a pebble.
0:29:49 > 0:29:52Sarah, however, is taking an easy route.
0:29:52 > 0:29:56She is simply adding to her existing wire lampshade.
0:29:56 > 0:29:59I'm making a big flower.
0:29:59 > 0:30:03Quite a good opportunity to de-industrialise this light.
0:30:03 > 0:30:04There's not much ambition there.
0:30:04 > 0:30:07All she's done is stick a bit of wire on a lamp she'd already made.
0:30:07 > 0:30:10Yeah, it's really disappointing.
0:30:10 > 0:30:13I was worried about whether this was right for the homeowner
0:30:13 > 0:30:18but there are going to be elements she wouldn't necessarily want,
0:30:18 > 0:30:21but it's all in the name of creativity.
0:30:21 > 0:30:22Pretty.
0:30:22 > 0:30:25The items will be judged on how well they integrate
0:30:25 > 0:30:28into the entire schemes, so the judges will have to wait to see them
0:30:28 > 0:30:29in the completed rooms.
0:30:35 > 0:30:39With a lot to do, Lily needs to get her laminate flooring laid,
0:30:39 > 0:30:40but there's a problem.
0:30:40 > 0:30:44Have you got soundproof underlay for that?
0:30:44 > 0:30:45- No, I don't.- OK...
0:30:45 > 0:30:48Now, can we just put the floor on top of this
0:30:48 > 0:30:49and use this as underlay?
0:30:49 > 0:30:51Erm, no.
0:30:51 > 0:30:54- OK, so I need to get that, then? - It needs to be sound-rated.
0:30:54 > 0:30:57Being a first-floor flat, there may be building regulations
0:30:57 > 0:31:00about the type of underlay for laminates, so Lily calls her client.
0:31:00 > 0:31:02- OK.- I think we need to see the lease
0:31:02 > 0:31:07to make sure that we are doing what is specified.
0:31:07 > 0:31:09- I don't know off the top of my head...- Mm-hmm?
0:31:09 > 0:31:12..and I can't tell you exactly where it is,
0:31:12 > 0:31:14so I wouldn't be able to get it out until this evening.
0:31:14 > 0:31:17Waiting until the end of the day will limit Lily's options
0:31:17 > 0:31:19so she's got an idea.
0:31:19 > 0:31:21- Erm... - I mean, the other option, Yasmin,
0:31:21 > 0:31:24- because we really need to change the floor anyway, was...- Yeah.
0:31:24 > 0:31:30..if I were to research on getting a wood-effect vinyl.
0:31:30 > 0:31:34- Yeah, the thing is, I really don't like vinyl.- OK.
0:31:34 > 0:31:37That was one of the main reasons to get rid of what we've got,
0:31:37 > 0:31:40cos I really don't like the vinyl.
0:31:40 > 0:31:43Lily's schedule will hang in the balance until tonight,
0:31:43 > 0:31:45when they can check the lease.
0:31:45 > 0:31:47We don't want to do something that we can
0:31:47 > 0:31:49get in trouble for later on,
0:31:49 > 0:31:51so I'll see later.
0:31:55 > 0:31:59Busy professionals like Lily's homeowners are exactly the type
0:31:59 > 0:32:03of people Warner wanted to take up residence in his half houses.
0:32:03 > 0:32:07Warner advertised in local newspapers. He was one of the first
0:32:07 > 0:32:09property developers to do so and it's clear from these
0:32:09 > 0:32:12original photographs exactly the kind of image
0:32:12 > 0:32:13he was keen to promote.
0:32:16 > 0:32:20These days, our living rooms are cosy and casual spaces,
0:32:20 > 0:32:23but back in the late 19th century and early 20th century
0:32:23 > 0:32:26when these flats were built, they'd have been much more formal
0:32:26 > 0:32:28and light would have flooded in from the front,
0:32:28 > 0:32:32though estate rules meant that you had to have net curtains
0:32:32 > 0:32:33and you'd be fined if they were anything
0:32:33 > 0:32:35other than perfectly spotless.
0:32:43 > 0:32:46Spotless curtains are on Sarah's mind, too.
0:32:46 > 0:32:51These are the curtains for the front of the kitchen cupboards.
0:32:52 > 0:32:55Even though we haven't got any kitchen cupboards yet!
0:32:55 > 0:32:58The curtains will be in front of the cooker
0:32:58 > 0:33:02so the material must be heat-resistant and fire-retardant.
0:33:02 > 0:33:05I didn't want this to be a flowery kitchen and when you're putting
0:33:05 > 0:33:09curtains in, I think it can look a bit OTT,
0:33:09 > 0:33:11although I do rather like OTT.
0:33:14 > 0:33:16Sarah seems to be learning restraint...
0:33:19 > 0:33:22..while Jamie is learning about practical layouts.
0:33:23 > 0:33:26- With his TV cabinet finished...- Perfect.
0:33:27 > 0:33:31..his next job is to decide where to put the family fish tank.
0:33:32 > 0:33:34I think I'm just going to move it...
0:33:34 > 0:33:37Actually, it'll need to be plugged in.
0:33:40 > 0:33:42But maybe next...
0:33:42 > 0:33:44Yeah, it'll be moved, but not too far.
0:33:45 > 0:33:48If that's not confusing enough...
0:33:48 > 0:33:50This looks interesting.
0:33:51 > 0:33:52Hold on, what is that?
0:33:52 > 0:33:56He also has to put together the new sofa his clients have bought.
0:33:56 > 0:33:59Hopefully it'll fit and not take over the kitchen!
0:34:00 > 0:34:03'So what did you think when you got the brief for a kitchen?
0:34:03 > 0:34:04'I mean, not only a kitchen,
0:34:04 > 0:34:06- 'a kitchen with a living space as well.- Yeah.'
0:34:06 > 0:34:09Really scared, but kind of willing to take on the challenge.
0:34:09 > 0:34:12Not being in the space, as well, to see how big it is for the sofa
0:34:12 > 0:34:15and everything, kind of, trying to spatial plan it.
0:34:15 > 0:34:18This is what I'm here for, to push myself and kind of do these
0:34:18 > 0:34:22things so I can prove that I can take on bigger things in the future.
0:34:29 > 0:34:33The designers are around the halfway point of their project and
0:34:33 > 0:34:37the time has come for them to reveal their progress to their homeowners.
0:34:37 > 0:34:41The client generally goes away overnight, thinks about it a bit,
0:34:41 > 0:34:44and then they come back with things they'd been worrying about a bit,
0:34:44 > 0:34:47so I wouldn't be surprised if there were more changes,
0:34:47 > 0:34:49but we shall have to see.
0:34:49 > 0:34:51After her experience in the last round,
0:34:51 > 0:34:56Sarah is particularly keen to avoid any deviations from her design.
0:34:56 > 0:34:59- Can I touch it?- Yes, please!
0:34:59 > 0:35:01Wow... Oh, it's lovely.
0:35:01 > 0:35:02Hiya!
0:35:02 > 0:35:05- Oh, I love the colours. - Lovely, isn't it?
0:35:05 > 0:35:09- Yeah, they work so well. Oh, and the cupboard doors!- Yep!
0:35:09 > 0:35:12- Oh, wow! It's lucky I like green! - It's all coming together.
0:35:12 > 0:35:13LAUGHTER
0:35:13 > 0:35:16The visit is the homeowner's first opportunity to see
0:35:16 > 0:35:19some of the designers' more unusual concepts.
0:35:20 > 0:35:23OK, these three lights, these two, will they have shades on them?
0:35:23 > 0:35:27- Will they have covers on them? - No, the lights hanging down here,
0:35:27 > 0:35:29hopefully what's going to happen is that you'll get
0:35:29 > 0:35:32shadows of this on the ceiling.
0:35:32 > 0:35:35I think the homeowner liked the lights.
0:35:35 > 0:35:38She seemed to go with it, she didn't seem worried by any of it.
0:35:38 > 0:35:39However...
0:35:39 > 0:35:42I'm not entirely sold, at this stage, on the lamp
0:35:42 > 0:35:45which will be in the centre of the kitchen.
0:35:45 > 0:35:49It would have been nice to have had, erm...
0:35:49 > 0:35:50some fabric.
0:35:55 > 0:35:59While Lily awaits the return of her homeowners, it's all hands on deck.
0:35:59 > 0:36:01Full house at the moment.
0:36:01 > 0:36:03We've got the electrician, we've got the builder,
0:36:03 > 0:36:07we've got the painter and I've got my mural to do,
0:36:07 > 0:36:11so four people in a small kitchen trying to work around each other.
0:36:11 > 0:36:12Room for two more?
0:36:14 > 0:36:17- Now, I'm looking at the floor. Nothing's changed.- Huge problem.
0:36:17 > 0:36:20You were planning on a laminate. Huge problem? What's happening?
0:36:20 > 0:36:23It's just this whole thing about building regulations
0:36:23 > 0:36:26and we didn't know there was no underlay, we don't know what's
0:36:26 > 0:36:29in the lease and they can only come back tonight and get the lease.
0:36:29 > 0:36:31Lily's got a major situation going on with that floor
0:36:31 > 0:36:33and I could see fear in her eyes.
0:36:33 > 0:36:35I mean, it totally needs dealing with.
0:36:35 > 0:36:40Leaving such a big job till the end could cost Lily time and money.
0:36:42 > 0:36:45Nowadays, building regulations are often strict
0:36:45 > 0:36:47when it comes to soundproofing flats,
0:36:47 > 0:36:49but when these half houses were built,
0:36:49 > 0:36:53noises from next door could be made into a virtue each morning.
0:36:53 > 0:36:57There are even tales of neighbours instigating a four-way alarm system.
0:36:57 > 0:37:01Downstairs knocked on the ceiling, they in turn knocked on the wall,
0:37:01 > 0:37:04they in turn knocked on the floor and everyone got to work on time.
0:37:07 > 0:37:10The floors may have been thin, but the workmanship
0:37:10 > 0:37:14of the buildings was a cut above the average Victorian terrace.
0:37:14 > 0:37:19Gables vary from pitched to curved to stepped, from pebbledashed
0:37:19 > 0:37:23to stripy brick and these rather decorative terracotta tiles
0:37:23 > 0:37:27add a touch of class to otherwise modest homes.
0:37:32 > 0:37:35It's approaching the end of day two.
0:37:35 > 0:37:37Lily's wait is nearly over.
0:37:37 > 0:37:40She's about to hear if the homeowners' lease demands
0:37:40 > 0:37:43specialist underlay for her laminate flooring.
0:37:43 > 0:37:45We've checked the lease, haven't we?
0:37:45 > 0:37:47Yeah, we've checked over the lease, there's nothing...
0:37:47 > 0:37:51absolutely nothing in it about, sort of, noise levels and decibel levels.
0:37:51 > 0:37:52I think that's good news
0:37:52 > 0:37:55because that has solved my dilemma for the day.
0:37:55 > 0:37:58Nothing was specified on the lease at all.
0:37:58 > 0:38:02We can just use the normal-grade flooring that flooring companies
0:38:02 > 0:38:04sell, so we're good.
0:38:04 > 0:38:06But the delay has cost Lily dearly.
0:38:06 > 0:38:10It's so late in the day, the floor will have to go down tomorrow.
0:38:12 > 0:38:16Down the road, Sarah is visiting Jamie's room...
0:38:16 > 0:38:18I love this wood, it's nice.
0:38:18 > 0:38:20..and she seems green with envy.
0:38:20 > 0:38:23It's looking lovely. She'll be very happy.
0:38:23 > 0:38:25How are you getting on with yours?
0:38:25 > 0:38:27- Oh, day two insanity.- Yeah.
0:38:27 > 0:38:29Exhausted.
0:38:29 > 0:38:31'She seemed really stressed and seemed like she had'
0:38:31 > 0:38:33a lot more to do and wanting to get straight back to her room.
0:38:33 > 0:38:36It doesn't make me feel panicky cos, obviously,
0:38:36 > 0:38:38I'm kind of in a good place at the minute.
0:38:38 > 0:38:40I'm just kind of excited to see what tomorrow brings
0:38:40 > 0:38:42and kind of seeing the end result.
0:38:42 > 0:38:45But as the curtain falls on day two...
0:38:45 > 0:38:46Oh, God...
0:38:46 > 0:38:48..with her measurements wrong...
0:38:48 > 0:38:50That's much lower than that side.
0:38:50 > 0:38:52..Sarah's in for a long night.
0:38:52 > 0:38:53I've got to sew them up.
0:38:55 > 0:38:59I always said I wouldn't do this, be sewing up to the end.
0:39:01 > 0:39:04But I just know tomorrow morning we haven't got a lot of time.
0:39:06 > 0:39:08Here's my depressed face.
0:39:19 > 0:39:22It's the final day of this round
0:39:22 > 0:39:24and one designer won't be going any further.
0:39:24 > 0:39:26To stay in the competition,
0:39:26 > 0:39:29our three amateurs need to make the most of the last few hours.
0:39:31 > 0:39:32'At this second-round stage,
0:39:32 > 0:39:35'the scrutiny from the judges will be even tougher.'
0:39:37 > 0:39:41So, last night I probably went home at about ten and it gave me
0:39:41 > 0:39:44a chance to kind of clean down and get ready for today
0:39:44 > 0:39:47so that we can literally get in there, finish off and dress.
0:39:47 > 0:39:51I've got to build the sofa and there's a few little last bits
0:39:51 > 0:39:54with the crates to go onto the wall for the herb wall.
0:39:54 > 0:39:57'But Lily is the designer facing the biggest time pressure
0:39:57 > 0:40:00'as she still needs her laminate floor to be delivered.'
0:40:00 > 0:40:04We only got the go-ahead last night and that was, like, half six
0:40:04 > 0:40:06so it had to be done this morning,
0:40:06 > 0:40:09so yeah, it's all very kind of tight.
0:40:09 > 0:40:11While she waits, Lily goes on the hunt for hooks
0:40:11 > 0:40:13to hang her tea towels.
0:40:13 > 0:40:15Look what I got!
0:40:15 > 0:40:18I walked past this discarded chest of drawers
0:40:18 > 0:40:21with some broken, erm...handles
0:40:21 > 0:40:24and I got some and these are retro
0:40:24 > 0:40:27and they are perfect for my kitchen, so look!
0:40:29 > 0:40:33She's found a way to save some time, too.
0:40:33 > 0:40:36They don't need to be drilled onto the wall as they only will
0:40:36 > 0:40:41have tea towels so they can just be stuck on the wall with a glue gun.
0:40:43 > 0:40:45Last time, Lily tried to achieve so much,
0:40:45 > 0:40:47but sometimes the quality of the finish wasn't quite there.
0:40:47 > 0:40:49Has she got a handle on it this time?
0:40:49 > 0:40:52We know we're going to get bags of creativity from Lily
0:40:52 > 0:40:54although the jury's very much out for me at the moment.
0:40:54 > 0:40:56It's looking a little bonkers.
0:40:56 > 0:40:58We've got loads of, kind of, stripes on the ceiling,
0:40:58 > 0:41:01feature walls and there's still the original floor down there,
0:41:01 > 0:41:04so if she's actually going to pull it off...is yet to be seen.
0:41:07 > 0:41:11'There's a lot going on with Jamie's farmers' market theme, too.
0:41:11 > 0:41:14'As the apple crate storage goes up...'
0:41:14 > 0:41:15Yeah.
0:41:15 > 0:41:18'..Jamie cracks on with stencilling a botanical pattern
0:41:18 > 0:41:20'on his blind and footstool.'
0:41:20 > 0:41:22I first kind of did this back at school.
0:41:22 > 0:41:24It's nice and simple, anyone can do it
0:41:24 > 0:41:26and it's nice just to use little tester pots that don't
0:41:26 > 0:41:30really cost anything to transform something really simple.
0:41:30 > 0:41:32Is Jamie's kitchen shaping up well?
0:41:32 > 0:41:35They asked for a botanical theme and he's picked the obvious colour
0:41:35 > 0:41:38choice, green, and he's put it on all the walls
0:41:38 > 0:41:40and on the cupboards, too.
0:41:40 > 0:41:43Concerned that they might be a little bit overpowering
0:41:43 > 0:41:44in such a small space.
0:41:44 > 0:41:46Green's a bit oppressive, if I'm honest.
0:41:49 > 0:41:52One of Sarah's last big jobs is to fix the curtains
0:41:52 > 0:41:53she made last night.
0:41:54 > 0:41:56Oh, no, I can't do that.
0:41:59 > 0:42:04I've just realised that this needs to be right on the end
0:42:04 > 0:42:07because the cooker's here so you need to be able to run it all
0:42:07 > 0:42:11the way back that way when, erm...when you're cooking.
0:42:11 > 0:42:14You don't want it in front of the cooker.
0:42:14 > 0:42:17'It's a sensible solution that works in addition to the fabric
0:42:17 > 0:42:19'being fire-retardant.'
0:42:19 > 0:42:21That's what happens when you're working
0:42:21 > 0:42:23till ten o'clock at night -
0:42:23 > 0:42:25not concentrating.
0:42:25 > 0:42:28Last time, Sarah wowed us with some really bold colour.
0:42:28 > 0:42:30Is she doing something similar this time?
0:42:30 > 0:42:33Well, the brief doesn't require a bold colour story this time,
0:42:33 > 0:42:35actually. It's a lot to do with the practicalities.
0:42:35 > 0:42:37Exactly. Some of the things that she's chosen to do,
0:42:37 > 0:42:39I don't know if they'll work that well.
0:42:44 > 0:42:46'The designers have had three days
0:42:46 > 0:42:49'and £1,000 to transform a kitchen each.'
0:42:49 > 0:42:51I think at this stage I can just...
0:42:51 > 0:42:56do what we can, do the best we can, really, at this stage.
0:42:57 > 0:43:00They've been challenged to get creative with wire
0:43:00 > 0:43:03and tested on their client presentation skills, in which
0:43:03 > 0:43:07Lily impressed the most, but have the other two overtaken her?
0:43:07 > 0:43:09Brilliant.
0:43:09 > 0:43:13As the deadline approaches, Sarah is finding that old habits die hard.
0:43:13 > 0:43:15I couldn't resist a little bit of floral
0:43:15 > 0:43:19so I'm going to cover this old stool that I found.
0:43:19 > 0:43:21I love a bit of floral, me.
0:43:24 > 0:43:27With just the final touches to go, it's a far cry
0:43:27 > 0:43:31from the disastrous rotted kitchen that collapsed just 48 hours ago.
0:43:34 > 0:43:36We've got five minutes to go.
0:43:37 > 0:43:40Who would have thought it?
0:43:40 > 0:43:41This is the bit where I go...
0:43:41 > 0:43:43- SHE GASPS - .."I've forgotten that!"
0:43:43 > 0:43:46It's too late now. It's just me and my cup of tea.
0:43:48 > 0:43:51Sarah's brief was to create a rustic country kitchen.
0:43:53 > 0:43:56Three days ago, crumbling cabinets were crying out
0:43:56 > 0:43:57for some design attention.
0:44:07 > 0:44:09Now it's a homely room with style.
0:44:12 > 0:44:15Sarah has created a muted traditional look
0:44:15 > 0:44:18with duck-egg blue units and cream walls.
0:44:19 > 0:44:22A hessian wall panel adds to the soft scheme.
0:44:22 > 0:44:26She's hung handmade curtains to cover the units and added storage
0:44:26 > 0:44:32with open shelving as well as some floral and more modern details.
0:44:32 > 0:44:36I hope when the judges come in I can hear them go, "Wow!"
0:44:36 > 0:44:39cos it is a total transformation
0:44:39 > 0:44:43so if they can't see the difference then, erm...
0:44:43 > 0:44:45I'll be getting them glasses.
0:44:51 > 0:44:55That is quite a transformation in 48 hours!
0:44:55 > 0:44:56Astonishing.
0:44:56 > 0:44:58I like Sarah's selection of colours as well.
0:44:58 > 0:45:02This clotted cream colour reminds me of old dairies.
0:45:02 > 0:45:06It's a really old-fashioned colour and, again, we all know this colour,
0:45:06 > 0:45:10but it's such a successful one, this duck-egg blue works very well.
0:45:10 > 0:45:13One concern we had was that there was going to be too much
0:45:13 > 0:45:16fabric in here and it's not really very practical for a kitchen.
0:45:16 > 0:45:18Looking at this now - move that across, Sophie -
0:45:18 > 0:45:22that works beautifully cos it stays over at that side,
0:45:22 > 0:45:25it's not gathering up too tightly and then that oven,
0:45:25 > 0:45:28which has seen better days, frankly, is hidden most of the time.
0:45:28 > 0:45:31It's done a lot in Provence, it's very trendy in France to do
0:45:31 > 0:45:33that and I think it's travelled very well.
0:45:33 > 0:45:35Is this a bit of fabric too much, though,
0:45:35 > 0:45:37putting it on the wall like this?
0:45:37 > 0:45:39Really do question how practical it is.
0:45:39 > 0:45:42You've only got to open a pot of ketchup at the dining table
0:45:42 > 0:45:46and it goes up there and that whole beautiful display is ruined.
0:45:46 > 0:45:47You can't clean it.
0:45:47 > 0:45:50As well as the scheme, Sophie and Daniel will judge each
0:45:50 > 0:45:54designer on how inventive they've been with the wire they supplied.
0:45:54 > 0:45:57She's used the copper wire to add some flower shapes to a wire light.
0:45:57 > 0:46:00They look slightly confusing to me.
0:46:00 > 0:46:02- I think it's overkill.- Hm.
0:46:02 > 0:46:05I think the homeowner's going to love it.
0:46:05 > 0:46:08It's soft, it's pretty, it's functional.
0:46:08 > 0:46:11If she doesn't love it, I'll have it.
0:46:11 > 0:46:14How happy the homeowners are with the finished schemes will inform
0:46:14 > 0:46:16the judges' final decision.
0:46:16 > 0:46:21Right, in you come...to your new country kitchen in Walthamstow.
0:46:21 > 0:46:23Wow.
0:46:23 > 0:46:24I'm overwhelmed, actually,
0:46:24 > 0:46:28because it is so different from how it was two days ago.
0:46:28 > 0:46:30The colour scheme is good.
0:46:30 > 0:46:32I have a slight reservation about that,
0:46:32 > 0:46:35but everything else, I think she's done a splendid job.
0:46:35 > 0:46:37I'm very, very pleased.
0:46:41 > 0:46:44Next, Jamie's time is almost up.
0:46:44 > 0:46:46We're kind of seeing the sofa and it's kind of...
0:46:46 > 0:46:48The room's coming together now.
0:46:48 > 0:46:50In this round, the judges have pushed Jamie
0:46:50 > 0:46:52to prove his spatial planning skills.
0:46:55 > 0:46:57They're great. We're done.
0:46:59 > 0:47:03It's kind of overwhelming seeing your designs being made real.
0:47:03 > 0:47:06I think your emotions get mixed at this stage cos you're
0:47:06 > 0:47:09really happy and you're kind of sad as well cos it could be the end.
0:47:09 > 0:47:12Jamie's brief was to create a farmer's market inspired kitchen
0:47:12 > 0:47:13cum living room.
0:47:15 > 0:47:18Three days ago, it was a cluttered room, lacking character.
0:47:22 > 0:47:25Now it's a multifunctional family room.
0:47:28 > 0:47:33He's cultivated natural tones of olive and avocado on cabinets
0:47:33 > 0:47:35and walls.
0:47:35 > 0:47:39And added accents of earthy terracotta on soft furnishings.
0:47:39 > 0:47:43He's used reclaimed scaffolding board to create a TV cabinet.
0:47:44 > 0:47:48And vegetable crates as extra kitchen storage.
0:47:48 > 0:47:50This is the second room I've designed,
0:47:50 > 0:47:52and kind of each stage you are learning all the time,
0:47:52 > 0:47:55and I'm feeling more confident in myself, and as a designer.
0:47:55 > 0:47:57So, I hope I've done enough to impress the judges.
0:47:59 > 0:48:01SHE LAUGHS
0:48:02 > 0:48:05Isn't it fun? I'm going to have to say, I walk in here and I get a
0:48:05 > 0:48:07huge smile smacked on my face.
0:48:07 > 0:48:10Just what they were asking for, in terms of the look.
0:48:10 > 0:48:13I'm just going to do the TV test. Yeah, I think he's got away with that,
0:48:13 > 0:48:16because he talked about putting it here, which would have been
0:48:16 > 0:48:18a disaster because that would have given you neck ache.
0:48:18 > 0:48:23- But I think by moving it into that cabinet, he's got away with it.- Mmm.
0:48:23 > 0:48:27For the first time, the judges will see Jamie's egg basket in situ,
0:48:27 > 0:48:30- but has he cracked it? - I'm a bit speechless.
0:48:30 > 0:48:32Is that a good one or a bad speechless?
0:48:32 > 0:48:35I don't know, there's something very childlike about it, and I think,
0:48:35 > 0:48:40in this very kind of rustic, organic setting, you can get away with that.
0:48:40 > 0:48:44You were concerned about all these greens, that they would look really oppressive.
0:48:44 > 0:48:49And the solution was some brick accent colours, but who would have
0:48:49 > 0:48:53guessed it would also be in the carrots, and a ball of string, too?
0:48:53 > 0:48:54Ingenious.
0:48:54 > 0:48:57This herb garden wall has always been quite a contentious issue
0:48:57 > 0:49:00with us, because we felt he was being a little indulgent.
0:49:00 > 0:49:04But actually what he's done is create a really lovely
0:49:04 > 0:49:06collection of objects that all really hang together.
0:49:06 > 0:49:08I love the letters, I love that apple crate.
0:49:08 > 0:49:13But the joke goes too far by playing the same game on this wall.
0:49:13 > 0:49:17I think some flat storage, painted in the same colour of the wall,
0:49:17 > 0:49:19would have been a good, practical approach,
0:49:19 > 0:49:23and would have just shown that Jamie not only can have fun in a room,
0:49:23 > 0:49:26but he actually can be quite serious about his practicalities.
0:49:28 > 0:49:31I'm proud of it. I feel like the homeowner is going to love it.
0:49:31 > 0:49:36I put a lot of effort into it, so, yeah, hope it pays off.
0:49:38 > 0:49:42Right, come on through to your new kitchen cum lounge cum
0:49:42 > 0:49:46- living space.- Oh, my goodness. Oh, it looks so nice.
0:49:46 > 0:49:49- Oh, I'm shaking. - SHE LAUGHS
0:49:49 > 0:49:51Oh, it is too much to take in.
0:49:51 > 0:49:54- Oh.- There's enough storage for you?
0:49:54 > 0:49:59Yeah, I think so. I have to say, it looks lovely.
0:49:59 > 0:50:00Oh! Oh!
0:50:00 > 0:50:03So exciting, I want to see Jamie so I can give him a hug.
0:50:03 > 0:50:05SHE LAUGHS
0:50:10 > 0:50:14In Lily's kitchen, the floor has finally arrived.
0:50:14 > 0:50:15We have enough flooring.
0:50:17 > 0:50:19Time has been against Lily ever
0:50:19 > 0:50:22since the hold-up with the laminate floor earlier on.
0:50:23 > 0:50:26I mean, it is looking good, it might just be...
0:50:26 > 0:50:29We'll see, I don't know.
0:50:29 > 0:50:32With just moments left, it's all hands on deck.
0:50:32 > 0:50:34And put these on top.
0:50:34 > 0:50:36Whoa! Let's not break that clock.
0:50:41 > 0:50:42OK, right, we're done.
0:50:44 > 0:50:46The kitchen is so difficult,
0:50:46 > 0:50:51and I didn't know how challenging doing a kitchen is.
0:50:52 > 0:50:56So, yeah, I have to be proud of what I've done.
0:50:58 > 0:51:02Lily's brief was for a bright, retro kitchen with industrial features.
0:51:04 > 0:51:07Before, the room was bright green and a little loud.
0:51:10 > 0:51:13Now, Lily has created a different type of impact.
0:51:15 > 0:51:18She's used a bold teal colour to zone the kitchen,
0:51:18 > 0:51:21which continues to the ceiling as painted coving.
0:51:23 > 0:51:25A playful mural gives a nod to the retro.
0:51:27 > 0:51:31And the vinyl floor has been replaced by a light laminate.
0:51:31 > 0:51:35I hope the judges think that there is some new, inventive things
0:51:35 > 0:51:37that I've done.
0:51:37 > 0:51:39And it's surprising enough.
0:51:43 > 0:51:46The triumph of this scheme, for me, is the way she has zoned
0:51:46 > 0:51:48these two areas using colour.
0:51:48 > 0:51:52The fresh green here, in this corner, and a darker,
0:51:52 > 0:51:53more cosy vibe in the cooking area.
0:51:53 > 0:51:55Both the homeowners asked for bright and fresh,
0:51:55 > 0:51:59and I think Lily has been pushing it a little bit,
0:51:59 > 0:52:02going for this very dark teal on the walls.
0:52:02 > 0:52:06Yes, but most people think that to make a room feel fresh, you just have to paint it white.
0:52:06 > 0:52:09What she has gone and done is play with some interesting colours
0:52:09 > 0:52:11and then added a paler floor,
0:52:11 > 0:52:14which has bounced the light into the room, and she's put this
0:52:14 > 0:52:18border on the ceiling, which links everything together very well.
0:52:18 > 0:52:22Lily used her wire in a few different places in her retro room.
0:52:22 > 0:52:25She's been really busy, but this is what Lily does.
0:52:25 > 0:52:27- She has loads and loads of ideas. - It is classic Lily.
0:52:27 > 0:52:29She has lots of ideas and she experiments with them,
0:52:29 > 0:52:33but I'm not sure that any of them are hugely successful.
0:52:33 > 0:52:36Maybe just one good idea would have impressed us a little more.
0:52:36 > 0:52:39I mean, I have to question some of the decisions with the detailing.
0:52:39 > 0:52:41We've got little hooks here...
0:52:41 > 0:52:44using glue. So, the quality of finish, I'm sorry,
0:52:44 > 0:52:46is really not up to scratch.
0:52:46 > 0:52:49So, this seems, to me, somebody who is really ambitious,
0:52:49 > 0:52:52really creative and perhaps trying to do too much,
0:52:52 > 0:52:55and therefore not actually getting the basics right.
0:52:57 > 0:53:02It would really make me so happy to go to the next round.
0:53:02 > 0:53:04It would make me even happier
0:53:04 > 0:53:07if my homeowners are completely
0:53:07 > 0:53:10pleased with my design.
0:53:11 > 0:53:14- Wow.- Wow.
0:53:14 > 0:53:17This is good. Floor looks good.
0:53:17 > 0:53:19This whole unit over there looks just amazing.
0:53:19 > 0:53:22I'm not quite sure about the colours yet.
0:53:22 > 0:53:24It's obviously really bright and airy at the moment,
0:53:24 > 0:53:27but come the dead of winter, whether it will be light enough
0:53:27 > 0:53:30in that area, but I guess only time sort of will tell with that one.
0:53:30 > 0:53:32But in terms of looks, it looks fantastic.
0:53:38 > 0:53:40With all three rooms scrutinised,
0:53:40 > 0:53:44the amateur designers await their fate.
0:53:44 > 0:53:48I don't feel like I've had a chance to really show what I can do.
0:53:48 > 0:53:50And I know that I can do much more,
0:53:50 > 0:53:54so, yeah, if there is a reason to get through, that would be the reason.
0:53:54 > 0:53:57Hopefully, the judges have seen I've improved from the last time,
0:53:57 > 0:54:00and maybe want to see me again in the next round.
0:54:00 > 0:54:03I'm a little bit nervous about the judges' decision.
0:54:03 > 0:54:06Anyone could go, the other two are really good,
0:54:06 > 0:54:08and I just hope I've done enough.
0:54:11 > 0:54:15So, judges, kitchens this time. The most challenging room in a house.
0:54:15 > 0:54:20Not only that, all three briefs required very different solutions.
0:54:20 > 0:54:22And it's also been really fascinating to see the resourceful ideas
0:54:22 > 0:54:26they have of updating the kitchen without having to remove it.
0:54:26 > 0:54:30Sarah was asked for a country kitchen in Walthamstow. Did she deliver it?
0:54:30 > 0:54:33What I like about Sarah is she went that extra mile and actually
0:54:33 > 0:54:36produced something that was thoroughly charming and really creative.
0:54:36 > 0:54:39For example, the little curtains around the kitchen units
0:54:39 > 0:54:42- really looked good. - Fabric wall, I wasn't so convinced.
0:54:42 > 0:54:45It looked good, but I don't think it is that practical.
0:54:45 > 0:54:47The homeowner loved it! Loved it!
0:54:47 > 0:54:51The only misgiving she had, really, was the exposed metal. But the rest of it she loved.
0:54:51 > 0:54:54Who can blame her for liking that design, because it is an absolute transformation.
0:54:54 > 0:54:56It does actually tick all the boxes.
0:54:56 > 0:54:59Jamie's homeowners asked for a botanically-inspired kitchen
0:54:59 > 0:55:02cum living space. Did he create one?
0:55:02 > 0:55:04He absolutely nailed the look.
0:55:04 > 0:55:07It was gorgeous, it was coherent, it was comprehensive.
0:55:07 > 0:55:10But interior design is more than just styling, it is actually
0:55:10 > 0:55:12addressing the practical issues in a room,
0:55:12 > 0:55:16- and I had some doubts he achieved that.- The homeowner adored it!
0:55:16 > 0:55:20- She was bowled over. - And he actually read the brief.
0:55:20 > 0:55:23And interpreted beautifully to make that client happy.
0:55:23 > 0:55:24I just knew she would love it.
0:55:24 > 0:55:28Lily was asked for a fresh kitchen with retro and industrial touches.
0:55:28 > 0:55:30She came up with a really bold colour scheme.
0:55:30 > 0:55:32We will thoroughly commend her for that.
0:55:32 > 0:55:35I don't think it was what the homeowners maybe asked for,
0:55:35 > 0:55:39but original and creative, and definitely something neither of us had seen before.
0:55:39 > 0:55:41It was, but that room wasn't just about colour,
0:55:41 > 0:55:44it was about finishing, and the quality was not brilliant.
0:55:44 > 0:55:47She had glued these pegs on the wall,
0:55:47 > 0:55:49which were going to fall off any second. Not great.
0:55:49 > 0:55:51The homeowners loved the transformation.
0:55:51 > 0:55:54They were not entirely convinced about the colours,
0:55:54 > 0:55:57and certainly the practicalities of that dark side of the room.
0:55:57 > 0:56:01Well, she took a punt with that colour scheme. I think even Lily would admit to that.
0:56:01 > 0:56:03So, because they had a kitchen this time, they worked so hard.
0:56:03 > 0:56:06It's really going to be a tough one, isn't it, Sophie?
0:56:12 > 0:56:15These Warner flats were designed to be compact but efficiently
0:56:15 > 0:56:18planned, a spirit, I think, all three of you have channelled this time.
0:56:18 > 0:56:22And kitchens, that is a tough challenge, given 48 hours,
0:56:22 > 0:56:26but all three of you have completely blown us away.
0:56:26 > 0:56:29- Well done.- And it is a very fine line between all of you.
0:56:32 > 0:56:34These two have had a tough job,
0:56:34 > 0:56:38but they've decided that the designer going home
0:56:38 > 0:56:40this time will be...
0:56:45 > 0:56:47..Lily.
0:56:47 > 0:56:50Oh, Lily. Oh.
0:56:52 > 0:56:55- You were brilliant. You were brilliant.- Oh, my God.
0:56:55 > 0:56:58- I told you.- Yours was amazing, though.- I'm gutted, to be honest.
0:56:58 > 0:57:01Obviously the finish wasn't good enough.
0:57:01 > 0:57:04I mean, yes, we just really ran out of time with the floor,
0:57:04 > 0:57:07it was a big job. Do you like your new kitchen?
0:57:07 > 0:57:09Oh.
0:57:09 > 0:57:12While Lily might lack confidence as a designer,
0:57:12 > 0:57:16here schemes certainly don't. They are really bold and hugely creative.
0:57:16 > 0:57:20What lets her down is perhaps being too overly ambitious,
0:57:20 > 0:57:24and the quality of the detail really isn't there.
0:57:24 > 0:57:25Well done!
0:57:27 > 0:57:28Me and Sarah.
0:57:28 > 0:57:30- Oh, my God, guess what, though.- What?
0:57:30 > 0:57:33One away from the quarterfinal.
0:57:33 > 0:57:37It's kind of becoming real that getting through twice, maybe
0:57:37 > 0:57:39- I am good. - HE LAUGHS
0:57:39 > 0:57:43Come here. Oh, thank you so much...
0:57:43 > 0:57:46Moving on, Jamie has got to look at the practicalities.
0:57:46 > 0:57:50It's all about spatial design that he's got to master.
0:57:50 > 0:57:54Yeah, Jamie is great. And I think he'll give me a run for my money.
0:57:54 > 0:57:59- What do you think?- It is lovely. I'm...I'm speechless.
0:57:59 > 0:58:01We work for it.
0:58:01 > 0:58:02What I'd really like to know now is,
0:58:02 > 0:58:04could Sarah do something contemporary?
0:58:04 > 0:58:06We've seen two quite vintage looks.
0:58:06 > 0:58:09If she can pull off modern, it could get exciting.
0:58:14 > 0:58:18Next time in '60s riverside apartments, Jamie...
0:58:18 > 0:58:21- Ah!- ..and Sarah... - That is insane.
0:58:21 > 0:58:25..battle it out for one place in the quarterfinal.
0:58:25 > 0:58:28The designer going through is...
