0:00:02 > 0:00:04I'm constantly taken aback by the huge variety of
0:00:04 > 0:00:06property styles in Britain - from characterful
0:00:06 > 0:00:10timber-framed cottages to grand townhouses.
0:00:10 > 0:00:11But sometimes,
0:00:11 > 0:00:15the insides don't live up to the expectations on the outside.
0:00:15 > 0:00:18So, we've gathered together the most talented amateur
0:00:18 > 0:00:20interior designers who think they could be the next big thing
0:00:20 > 0:00:24to show us how it's done. But it's not as easy as it looks.
0:00:24 > 0:00:25Oh, no! I'm panicking!
0:00:25 > 0:00:26GLASS SMASHES
0:00:28 > 0:00:30It's a bit make-or-break, really.
0:00:30 > 0:00:31Across three knockout episodes,
0:00:31 > 0:00:35a group of designers will compete for one place in finals week.
0:00:35 > 0:00:38Oh, why isn't easy?
0:00:38 > 0:00:40I just like to do things properly.
0:00:40 > 0:00:43Oh, that's wonderful!
0:00:43 > 0:00:46Judging them, two industry experts - Daniel Hopwood...
0:00:46 > 0:00:48To make it through to the final four,
0:00:48 > 0:00:51they will have to impress with every inch of their designs.
0:00:51 > 0:00:53..and Sophie Robinson.
0:00:53 > 0:00:56These designs really do need to be outstanding.
0:00:56 > 0:00:59They'll be scrutinising presentation skills...
0:00:59 > 0:01:03- That's not the way to present somebody.- ..artistic flair...
0:01:03 > 0:01:06- Have you ever seen that done before? - No, it's weird.
0:01:06 > 0:01:09..and how well they deliver their brief.
0:01:09 > 0:01:12- Pretty amazing transformation. - Absolutely beautiful.
0:01:12 > 0:01:16In the finals, the best will face giants of the design world -
0:01:16 > 0:01:18- Oliver Heath...- Oh, my word!
0:01:18 > 0:01:21- ..Orla Kiely...- It does look quite rough.
0:01:21 > 0:01:24- ..and Kelly Hoppen. - I want perfection.
0:01:25 > 0:01:27But only one can be crowned winner
0:01:27 > 0:01:29of The Great Interior Design Challenge.
0:01:37 > 0:01:40Last time, three designers battled to impress the judges.
0:01:40 > 0:01:43They said they want a bit of quirky but not too wacky.
0:01:43 > 0:01:47- I don't think this is wacky. - It's looking a little bonkers.
0:01:47 > 0:01:52- One went home. Two of them made it through.- I'm proud of it.
0:01:52 > 0:01:54I put a lot of effort into it.
0:01:54 > 0:01:57It is a total transformation.
0:01:57 > 0:02:00Now things are getting even tougher.
0:02:00 > 0:02:02This time, our amateurs will be tackling an attic bedroom
0:02:02 > 0:02:06each in two riverside properties in Marlow.
0:02:06 > 0:02:10It's a clash of experience versus raw talent...
0:02:10 > 0:02:12Sarah - she is such a class act.
0:02:12 > 0:02:16Her cool, calm nature shows in every inch of her accomplished schemes.
0:02:16 > 0:02:18Jamie is full of youthful creativity,
0:02:18 > 0:02:21but surprisingly sophisticated.
0:02:21 > 0:02:23- ..as the designers fight...- Aargh!
0:02:23 > 0:02:26- ..to please their homeowners... - I am worried!
0:02:26 > 0:02:29- ..and impress the judges.- There's all of that going on in the walls.
0:02:29 > 0:02:30It's going to feel a bit hectic.
0:02:30 > 0:02:34Whoa! That looks a lot brighter than it should be.
0:02:34 > 0:02:37It's not beautiful and it's almost useful.
0:02:37 > 0:02:39I'm absolutely done.
0:02:39 > 0:02:43There's only one quarterfinal place up for grabs.
0:02:43 > 0:02:46The designer going through is...
0:02:53 > 0:02:57First up, the location for this epic design battle may look pretty,
0:02:57 > 0:03:01but the unusual rooms won't be a pleasure cruise.
0:03:01 > 0:03:04These houses beside the river in picturesque Marlow do look rather
0:03:04 > 0:03:07strange with their angular roof and their white weatherboarding.
0:03:07 > 0:03:08They were built in the 1960s -
0:03:08 > 0:03:12a decade that can be unfairly knocked for its architecture
0:03:12 > 0:03:14but, actually, it was a brilliantly inventive time
0:03:14 > 0:03:17when the way in which we lived was radically rethought.
0:03:17 > 0:03:21Now, our designers have to be equally inventive as they transform
0:03:21 > 0:03:22a bedroom each.
0:03:29 > 0:03:33Headboard - that's going to be MDF and then the front's going to be the scaffolding boards.
0:03:33 > 0:03:35The designers have been working on a brief from their homeowners
0:03:35 > 0:03:37for the past week.
0:03:37 > 0:03:39One step away from the quarterfinals, which is
0:03:39 > 0:03:41absolutely mind-blowing.
0:03:41 > 0:03:45They have a small team including a builder and a decorator...
0:03:45 > 0:03:46Paint it all white.
0:03:46 > 0:03:49I'll mask is all off and then you paint the yellow in the putty
0:03:49 > 0:03:52- and then come back and paint that one.- No problem.- Yeah?
0:03:52 > 0:03:57..and just £1,000 and three days to complete their transformations.
0:03:57 > 0:04:00Competition's definitely getting tougher and I'm up against my buddy
0:04:00 > 0:04:04Jamie this time, so I'm bittersweet, but we're both in it to win it.
0:04:07 > 0:04:08Where to start?
0:04:09 > 0:04:13The first designer battling for a quarterfinal place
0:04:13 > 0:04:15is 41-year-old garden designer Sarah.
0:04:15 > 0:04:21Sarah consistently delivers competent, cohesive schemes,
0:04:21 > 0:04:23but she's had two traditional briefs.
0:04:23 > 0:04:27This time, I'm wondering how she's going to handle a different look.
0:04:27 > 0:04:31Before Sarah started work, her attic room was boysy and bland,
0:04:31 > 0:04:35which Sophie and Daniel checked out before work began.
0:04:35 > 0:04:38Looking at it right now, the layout isn't that bad,
0:04:38 > 0:04:40but it does just look a little bit boring.
0:04:40 > 0:04:42It actually looks a bit like a teenager's room.
0:04:42 > 0:04:47- This room needs to go onto the next level.- Sarah's designing for Jay.
0:04:47 > 0:04:49He's away travelling at the moment but wants a more grown-up,
0:04:49 > 0:04:53masculine bedroom when he returns to the family home.
0:04:53 > 0:04:56It's almost like creating a studio flat, if you like.
0:04:56 > 0:04:58It needs to be his sleeping space, somewhere to work
0:04:58 > 0:05:00and then probably to have some friends round, too.
0:05:00 > 0:05:03But the difficulty with Sarah is she's a real vintage girl.
0:05:03 > 0:05:05This guy wants bachelor pad.
0:05:05 > 0:05:09Yes, we really want to see Sarah deliver a very contemporary look.
0:05:09 > 0:05:11Sarah's take on contemporary?
0:05:11 > 0:05:15A yellow putty and black colour palette in jagged blocks.
0:05:15 > 0:05:17The room will be dominated by an ambitious wardrobe,
0:05:17 > 0:05:19shelf and desk unit.
0:05:19 > 0:05:21This brief is not really my style.
0:05:21 > 0:05:26My style is more eclectic, so I'm stepping out of my comfort zones.
0:05:26 > 0:05:29In Jay's absence, Sarah had to get her ideas past
0:05:29 > 0:05:33Mum and Dad, Lynne and John, and impress Sophie and Daniel who, once
0:05:33 > 0:05:37again, will be judging how well each designer presents their schemes.
0:05:37 > 0:05:41The yellow's going to wrap around the back section of the wall
0:05:41 > 0:05:43and then this putty colour is going to come up
0:05:43 > 0:05:48and across the top of the bed to create a kind of visual canopy.
0:05:48 > 0:05:50I think he'll love this yellow.
0:05:50 > 0:05:53The putty colour doesn't leap out at me.
0:05:53 > 0:05:56So, that's a base palette that's going to soften everything else
0:05:56 > 0:05:59- and allow it to be a bit more graphic in other ways.- Yeah.
0:05:59 > 0:06:02So I think it's quite important to keep that.
0:06:02 > 0:06:07So I've actually found this amazing tape which is a magnetic black tape.
0:06:07 > 0:06:12- So it means that you can stick up postcards.- What a nice idea.
0:06:12 > 0:06:14She also plans to feature accessories
0:06:14 > 0:06:16inspired by a love of travel.
0:06:16 > 0:06:20- The accent colours that I'm using are blacks...- OK.
0:06:20 > 0:06:23- ..tan, leather, denim...- Yeah.
0:06:23 > 0:06:27..and also elements of fabrics from around the world.
0:06:27 > 0:06:30These are fabrics I would never think of using myself but,
0:06:30 > 0:06:34to him, hopefully, that will be cool and modern.
0:06:34 > 0:06:36I'm so excited about Sarah's scheme,
0:06:36 > 0:06:40because not only has she moved away from her classic, vintage look,
0:06:40 > 0:06:42but she's created something really new
0:06:42 > 0:06:44and exciting with all these sort of different angles,
0:06:44 > 0:06:47which are going to change the perspective of that room.
0:06:47 > 0:06:49- You do love a bit of a jaunty angle, don't you?- Oh, I do!
0:06:49 > 0:06:51I know, I can tell! But, you know, at the same time,
0:06:51 > 0:06:54it is a bedroom and my concern is there's all of that
0:06:54 > 0:06:57going on in the walls, it's going to feel a bit hectic.
0:06:57 > 0:07:01With work well under way, it isn't the jaunty angles in question.
0:07:01 > 0:07:06The putty colour's not quite what I imagine.
0:07:06 > 0:07:08It's murky.
0:07:08 > 0:07:11I think we have to suspend judgment.
0:07:11 > 0:07:15Well, they won't have to wait long as, with the walls now washed,
0:07:15 > 0:07:17Sarah's masking out shapes ready for the colours.
0:07:17 > 0:07:21- Does that look straight? - Yeah, that's a straight line.
0:07:21 > 0:07:24There are more lines and angles across Sarah's ambitious shelving,
0:07:24 > 0:07:28desk and wardrobe unit, which will cover the entire back wall.
0:07:28 > 0:07:31From the back, you can see large timbers either side of the wardrobe.
0:07:31 > 0:07:33- We're going to box the wardrobe in. - Yeah.
0:07:33 > 0:07:36So what we've got to do is get all this stuff upstairs.
0:07:36 > 0:07:37Oh, don't look at me!
0:07:37 > 0:07:38THEY LAUGH
0:07:44 > 0:07:49Next up is 21-year-old Jamie - a sales assistant from County Durham.
0:07:49 > 0:07:51Jamie doesn't always take into consideration
0:07:51 > 0:07:54the needs of his client or the demands of the space.
0:07:54 > 0:07:58This time, he's really got to get those right.
0:07:58 > 0:08:01Yeah, out of my comfort zone. Feel a bit scared with this one.
0:08:01 > 0:08:05Perhaps with good reason as his room started off uber-colourful
0:08:05 > 0:08:07and uber-cluttered.
0:08:07 > 0:08:10I tell you what's really banging me in the face in this room,
0:08:10 > 0:08:13is the colour. I mean, wow!
0:08:13 > 0:08:16This homeowner has gone for it but it's not really working, is it?
0:08:16 > 0:08:18And I think rule of thumb is maybe just go for
0:08:18 > 0:08:22three colours as your main story. You can always add more.
0:08:22 > 0:08:25Jamie's client is university student Betty,
0:08:25 > 0:08:28who wanted a hippy chic bedroom with colours inspired by
0:08:28 > 0:08:32an Indian sari and plenty of practical storage.
0:08:32 > 0:08:35Designing wardrobes in a tight space like this isn't going to be easy.
0:08:35 > 0:08:37And while the brief might sound like lots of fun,
0:08:37 > 0:08:41this sort of like bohemian multicoloured look, making
0:08:41 > 0:08:45that feel quite sophisticated and coherent is going to be really hard.
0:08:46 > 0:08:49Hoping he'd pick the right mix of ethnic colours,
0:08:49 > 0:08:54Jamie's using pink, blue, mint green and a bright and paler orange.
0:08:54 > 0:08:56With Betty at university,
0:08:56 > 0:08:59it was up to mum Chrissie to sign off the design.
0:08:59 > 0:09:02This is the colour that I've got for the main back wall, and that's
0:09:02 > 0:09:03also going to follow through
0:09:03 > 0:09:05and kind of going to this wall with the door.
0:09:05 > 0:09:08- OK.- The actual headboard that I'm going to be doing is a storage
0:09:08 > 0:09:10headboard, and this is the wood that I'm going to be using.
0:09:10 > 0:09:12- It's kind of distressed pink. - Yeah, that's lovely.
0:09:12 > 0:09:15- That's probably a favourite colour. - Yeah?- Yeah.
0:09:15 > 0:09:18Um, I wanted to pick a lighter colour for the bottom wall
0:09:18 > 0:09:21- over there, which is where the seating area's going to be.- Um...
0:09:23 > 0:09:25- I'm not so sure about this colour here.- Right.
0:09:25 > 0:09:28But then, as long as you just bear in mind that the
0:09:28 > 0:09:34overall is going to be that very rich Indian sari, vibrant colour.
0:09:34 > 0:09:39- Yeah.- This is a very good colour. This is very...- The teal?- Yeah.
0:09:39 > 0:09:42So with the sort of accessories and the cushions and the throws,
0:09:42 > 0:09:45that's what I want to be bringing that colour. Um...
0:09:45 > 0:09:48Jamie may not have got all his shades spot-on
0:09:48 > 0:09:51but he's out to impress with his wardrobe built into the eaves
0:09:51 > 0:09:53and innovative headboard storage.
0:09:53 > 0:09:55So, the bed's staying in the same place.
0:09:55 > 0:09:58The depth is going to be about the thickness of kind
0:09:58 > 0:10:00of a scaffolding board and there's going to be
0:10:00 > 0:10:03- the dug-outs in the side for the shoes to be kept. - That's interesting.
0:10:03 > 0:10:06The wardrobe's actually going to be sitting in that back corner there.
0:10:06 > 0:10:10- I just thought that was the best position within the room to kind of access.- It's really tricky.
0:10:10 > 0:10:13I think you've done really well to interpret the brief as you have.
0:10:13 > 0:10:18- As long as it stays bright, the richness is really important.- Yeah.
0:10:18 > 0:10:20I think Jamie's come up with a very interesting
0:10:20 > 0:10:23choice of colours but I'm not sure they're quite the right tone.
0:10:23 > 0:10:25They're what I call sort of sorbet shades
0:10:25 > 0:10:28and this homeowner wanted something which was a lot more
0:10:28 > 0:10:31kind of ethnic - those lovely rich Indian colours.
0:10:31 > 0:10:35And I don't think those colours have got enough energy.
0:10:35 > 0:10:39I don't know. I just feel stupid.
0:10:40 > 0:10:42I think I got the colours right,
0:10:42 > 0:10:44just not the intensity of the colours.
0:10:44 > 0:10:47I went too kind of pale with certain ones.
0:10:47 > 0:10:51With the current scheme very bright Jamie's decorator also has
0:10:51 > 0:10:52concerns about his paler shades.
0:10:52 > 0:10:54The colours are really vivid.
0:10:54 > 0:10:55I know.
0:10:55 > 0:10:57Yeah, and it's going to be a good three or four coats just to
0:10:57 > 0:11:01- neutralise it, just to blank it all out before we add colour.- Right.
0:11:04 > 0:11:09With half the day gone both designers are up against it,
0:11:09 > 0:11:13but the judges need to give them feedback on their presentations.
0:11:13 > 0:11:15It's now the third time they've pitched and Sophie
0:11:15 > 0:11:18and Daniel's expectations are higher than ever.
0:11:18 > 0:11:20The first one I came last,
0:11:20 > 0:11:24the second one I came last, and this one I've come last. No.
0:11:24 > 0:11:27I know it didn't go very good so I just wasn't very confident
0:11:27 > 0:11:29in it and I think that definitely showed.
0:11:29 > 0:11:31We'll see what they say.
0:11:33 > 0:11:37I've done a lot more this time. If that wasn't good enough, what is?
0:11:39 > 0:11:43With a quarterfinal place at stake the designers will be ranked,
0:11:43 > 0:11:45which will count in the judges' final deliberation.
0:11:49 > 0:11:52Overall, we'd like to say that we think you got a lovely
0:11:52 > 0:11:54rapport with both of your homeowners.
0:11:54 > 0:11:56Jamie, I love the fact that you created all these samples.
0:11:56 > 0:11:59For example, the crochet pieces and the ruffles.
0:11:59 > 0:12:02They really help the homeowner imagine what you want to do.
0:12:02 > 0:12:05But I don't feel that your presentations have moved on very much.
0:12:05 > 0:12:08I think if you had rendered those drawings that would've been
0:12:08 > 0:12:09a vast improvement.
0:12:11 > 0:12:14You had a really complicated design to communicate to your homeowner
0:12:14 > 0:12:18and the sketch that you made really helps see that room in 3D.
0:12:18 > 0:12:19It was excellent.
0:12:19 > 0:12:24However, we felt like you just lost a bit of soul in your presentation.
0:12:24 > 0:12:27There was no touchy-feely. It was all a bit ironed-out,
0:12:27 > 0:12:29flat board, lost a sense of creativity.
0:12:30 > 0:12:35So, balancing on what you did well and not so well, we're going
0:12:35 > 0:12:36to put...
0:12:38 > 0:12:41..Sarah in first place. Which means, Jamie, you came second.
0:12:43 > 0:12:46Pumped. I'm feeling good.
0:12:47 > 0:12:50They were quite right, it needed more texture
0:12:50 > 0:12:52which is why I brought along the fabric and the belt
0:12:52 > 0:12:54because I thought that would bring that in.
0:12:54 > 0:12:57But, obviously, they want it stapled to the board instead.
0:12:59 > 0:13:00I'm not saying what I'm thinking.
0:13:00 > 0:13:03I went over the brief and every time it's gone wrong.
0:13:03 > 0:13:06Rachel won first. Lily won last time.
0:13:07 > 0:13:10I'd like to win but I think after this briefing
0:13:10 > 0:13:13it's knocked my confidence a little tiny bit.
0:13:15 > 0:13:16Erm...
0:13:18 > 0:13:21Both amateur designers are busy transforming rooms
0:13:21 > 0:13:24they hope will be anything but run-of-the-mill.
0:13:24 > 0:13:27- That is a brilliant colour. - Yes, I like it.
0:13:27 > 0:13:32Perhaps divining inspiration from the development's past life.
0:13:32 > 0:13:35I love the crisp white lines of these 1960s buildings.
0:13:35 > 0:13:37Although they are strikingly Modernist,
0:13:37 > 0:13:40they seem to sit very well on the riverside setting probably because
0:13:40 > 0:13:43the architects have referred in their design
0:13:43 > 0:13:44to the history of the site.
0:13:44 > 0:13:46There's been a mill here on the river
0:13:46 > 0:13:50since medieval times harnessing the power of the Thames.
0:13:50 > 0:13:52And the weather-boarding and the jagged roofline,
0:13:52 > 0:13:56the pitched roofs, seem to refer to the buildings that once stood here.
0:13:57 > 0:14:00While these houses reference a past, they also embodied
0:14:00 > 0:14:03the optimism of the 1960s.
0:14:03 > 0:14:06In 1957, the Prime Minister told us all that we'd never had it so good
0:14:06 > 0:14:10and homes like these were built for the aspiring professional classes
0:14:10 > 0:14:14with their TVs, their fridges and their cars, and had in-built garages
0:14:14 > 0:14:17that took up almost the whole of the ground floor.
0:14:21 > 0:14:23You need to get right up to the top.
0:14:23 > 0:14:27It's lofty space however our amateurs are contending with.
0:14:27 > 0:14:30In Jamie's attic room, the pale orange is being tested
0:14:30 > 0:14:34on the wall whilst he's trying to work out how to make a new beanbag.
0:14:34 > 0:14:38What I did plan to do is take the cover off the original one
0:14:38 > 0:14:41and just cut the same shapes as is currently there
0:14:41 > 0:14:44and just cut them out of this fabric and sew them back together.
0:14:44 > 0:14:47Creating a new cover using the old one as a template
0:14:47 > 0:14:49could have worked. However...
0:14:49 > 0:14:52You can't take the cover off because the beans are just inside.
0:14:52 > 0:14:55They're not in a separate bag. It would just be a mess.
0:14:56 > 0:14:59Jamie's inexperience is showing through.
0:15:04 > 0:15:0718 minutes later, he's got a plan.
0:15:08 > 0:15:11Ditch the template and make a bag from scratch.
0:15:12 > 0:15:16What I'm actually thinking about doing now is taking the beans
0:15:16 > 0:15:19out of that bag, so just putting the beans
0:15:19 > 0:15:22directly into this one, which might be messy.
0:15:23 > 0:15:27Jamie's youthful enthusiasm has got him through two rounds
0:15:27 > 0:15:28of the competition
0:15:28 > 0:15:32as the judges have been impressed by his creativity.
0:15:32 > 0:15:35I want it to stand out, but I didn't want it to be too scary.
0:15:35 > 0:15:37It's quite bohemian, as well.
0:15:37 > 0:15:39What a transformation!
0:15:39 > 0:15:41I like this sort of stencilling.
0:15:41 > 0:15:44Almost looks like a Fair Isle jumper.
0:15:44 > 0:15:47But he sometimes struggled with the fundamental rules
0:15:47 > 0:15:49of interior design and spatial planning.
0:15:50 > 0:15:54- So, the sofa is here, so it's kind of an L sofa.- It's an L-shaped sofa.
0:15:54 > 0:15:56What's on this wall?
0:15:56 > 0:15:59It's going to be creative. It's going to be a herb wall,
0:15:59 > 0:16:01grow your own herbs and fruit and veg on the wall.
0:16:01 > 0:16:04You're going to be sitting at the sofa looking at a herb garden.
0:16:04 > 0:16:05THEY LAUGH
0:16:08 > 0:16:13Now you've seen the space, how are you finding the practicalities?
0:16:13 > 0:16:15Going from last time and not measuring out where the sofa
0:16:15 > 0:16:18was going to be and how it was going to work, I learned from that.
0:16:18 > 0:16:20- You've got the wardrobe here, haven't you?- Yes.
0:16:20 > 0:16:23What it is, the wardrobe's going to have a back section
0:16:23 > 0:16:26just for tubs, the front section will have hanging space and shelving.
0:16:26 > 0:16:30Tell me about the headboard. You've got some interesting things going on on the headboard.
0:16:30 > 0:16:32Yes. I wanted to make a statement headboard.
0:16:32 > 0:16:34In the sides is storage for shoes.
0:16:34 > 0:16:37- It's quite unusual to have shoe storage in your headboard.- Yeah.
0:16:37 > 0:16:39Also unusual, Jamie's choice of pastel colours
0:16:39 > 0:16:41to answer a rich, ethnic brief.
0:16:41 > 0:16:44Can I ask you how you came to choose the colours?
0:16:44 > 0:16:46I know that orange is one of her favourite colours,
0:16:46 > 0:16:49so I wanted to bring in different tones and shades of that one.
0:16:49 > 0:16:51That's where I got the inspiration from.
0:16:51 > 0:16:52And then the dark pinks and teals
0:16:52 > 0:16:55are going to be in accessories and throws.
0:16:55 > 0:16:57When you said, "Why are you painting that in the orange colour?"
0:16:57 > 0:17:00He said, "Because the homeowner likes it." Wrong answer.
0:17:00 > 0:17:03He should have said, "Because that orange is soft
0:17:03 > 0:17:05"and is quite relaxing to the eye.
0:17:05 > 0:17:07He hasn't sort of got that.
0:17:07 > 0:17:11Whatever the reason, it seems Jamie is pleased with his choices.
0:17:11 > 0:17:14- You like the colour, do you?- Yeah. Do you not?- Yeah. No. I love it.
0:17:14 > 0:17:18No. I love it. Once we've got rid of that final bit of cerise
0:17:18 > 0:17:21- it will be really sharp and really bright.- Yeah.
0:17:21 > 0:17:24While he's feeling positive, it's time to
0:17:24 > 0:17:27get those polystyrene beans into his new bag.
0:17:28 > 0:17:30Don't know if this is going to work.
0:17:30 > 0:17:33He may be short on experience, but not on ingenuity
0:17:33 > 0:17:37and has come up with a nifty invention to cut down on spillage.
0:17:37 > 0:17:40- A paper-cup funnel. - Do you know what?
0:17:40 > 0:17:43What would be the worst thing that would happen?
0:17:43 > 0:17:45HE LAUGHS
0:17:45 > 0:17:47If like, when it gets judged,
0:17:47 > 0:17:51someone jumped on it and it exploded!
0:17:52 > 0:17:56I might have to put a sign on saying, "Do not use".
0:18:01 > 0:18:04Sarah is also getting to grips with accessories.
0:18:04 > 0:18:07She's trying to make a couple of cushions using an ethnic rug
0:18:07 > 0:18:10she bought for £75.
0:18:10 > 0:18:13Using normal material would be really easy to make a cushion,
0:18:13 > 0:18:17but I have to be a bit more thoughtful about this one,
0:18:17 > 0:18:19so that it looks right.
0:18:21 > 0:18:25And luckily, look, they've put a stripe for me right down the middle of it.
0:18:25 > 0:18:29The rug is thick so Sarah's sewing machine has got its work cut out,
0:18:29 > 0:18:32especially as she is using denim as backing.
0:18:32 > 0:18:36Wasn't sure if my sewing machine would go through a rug. But it did.
0:18:37 > 0:18:38Perfect!
0:18:42 > 0:18:44Are we done yet?
0:18:45 > 0:18:49Sarah's not been resting on the job in previous rounds,
0:18:49 > 0:18:52demonstrating to the judges she can deliver a strong look.
0:18:52 > 0:18:56I couldn't resist a little bit of floral. Magic.
0:18:56 > 0:18:58I really do feel like I'm standing in a country kitchen
0:18:58 > 0:19:01which is what the brief was.
0:19:01 > 0:19:05But she hasn't always hit the mark with her colour choices.
0:19:05 > 0:19:09What a gorgeous colour. He's going to love that.
0:19:09 > 0:19:13One green was nice but two greens working together? I don't know.
0:19:13 > 0:19:16Yeah, it's a bit of a risky kind of strategy, isn't it?
0:19:16 > 0:19:19I'm not going to be able to live with the ceilings in this colour.
0:19:21 > 0:19:22There's a lot of shapes going on.
0:19:22 > 0:19:25I can see you've been busy with the yellow tape already.
0:19:25 > 0:19:28And you've selected a putty colour which the homeowners
0:19:28 > 0:19:31don't seem to like. Where have you got with that?
0:19:31 > 0:19:33The putty colour is a really great neutral.
0:19:33 > 0:19:35What I didn't want to do in here
0:19:35 > 0:19:38was have an '80s room. I wanted to soften it.
0:19:38 > 0:19:41So, it's more of a blend because you've got putty
0:19:41 > 0:19:43and what is the other colour that's going against it?
0:19:43 > 0:19:45It's yellow. So, yellow and putty.
0:19:47 > 0:19:51It's quite clever that she's using the colour to zone the space.
0:19:51 > 0:19:56- Do you think it's going to work though?- That yellow, I'm not sure.
0:19:56 > 0:19:59It's the colour selection that is not winning me.
0:19:59 > 0:20:02Sarah might be having second thoughts about the tone, as well.
0:20:02 > 0:20:05That looks a lot brighter than it should be.
0:20:11 > 0:20:15Redesigning awkward attic rooms in three days is tough enough,
0:20:15 > 0:20:19but in this third round the judges are raising the stakes, surprising
0:20:19 > 0:20:24the designers with a brand-new task they have no idea about whatsoever.
0:20:24 > 0:20:28- The judges want to see you.- OK. I wonder what that's about then.
0:20:28 > 0:20:30It's time to put the pressure on
0:20:30 > 0:20:33so we're going to set a junk-van challenge.
0:20:33 > 0:20:36Now, we're getting an upcycle thing that we don't really have time for.
0:20:36 > 0:20:38But, yeah, let's do this.
0:20:39 > 0:20:42This new challenge is going to test their imaginations,
0:20:42 > 0:20:44how well they think on their feet,
0:20:44 > 0:20:47and shows what sort of interior designer they really are.
0:20:49 > 0:20:54Inside this van we've got a whole heap of junk.
0:20:54 > 0:20:58What we'd like you to do is design a one-off product.
0:20:58 > 0:21:00It could be your signature piece
0:21:00 > 0:21:02something that really sums up you and your style.
0:21:02 > 0:21:05We really want you to play to your strengths
0:21:05 > 0:21:09and we're going to give you 15 minutes to grab whatever you want.
0:21:12 > 0:21:13Off you go.
0:21:13 > 0:21:16Sophie and Daniel will simply be deciding
0:21:16 > 0:21:19which designer comes up with the best stand-alone product.
0:21:19 > 0:21:22- SARAH:- Oh, that was crafty.
0:21:23 > 0:21:25- SARAH:- Just like being at a car boot.
0:21:25 > 0:21:28The results will be critical in deciding who wins
0:21:28 > 0:21:29the quarterfinal place.
0:21:33 > 0:21:34That's quite good.
0:21:34 > 0:21:39Jamie's junk-van booty includes a wooden stool and a suitcase.
0:21:39 > 0:21:41I kind of picked out things that are kind of like myself,
0:21:41 > 0:21:43but I can put together.
0:21:43 > 0:21:45(I hope he's going to come up with something original,
0:21:45 > 0:21:48(because we've seen the suitcase side tables before.)
0:21:48 > 0:21:49I picked this for the wheels.
0:21:49 > 0:21:53Sarah's haul consists of a hostess trolley,
0:21:53 > 0:21:55a '70s pouf and some fabric.
0:21:55 > 0:21:58It's a whole load of junk. I've got to turn it into something cool.
0:21:59 > 0:22:03The judges have given them 90 minutes on day two
0:22:03 > 0:22:06to transform their junk into a standout piece of product design.
0:22:06 > 0:22:09I love going to a junk shop and finding things that people
0:22:09 > 0:22:11don't want any more and kind of making them new again.
0:22:11 > 0:22:15- So, it's kind of perfect. But I've got no ideas.- All right, actually.
0:22:15 > 0:22:17This is kind of what I like doing
0:22:17 > 0:22:19is making things out of old junk.
0:22:19 > 0:22:23So, weirdly, I'm not stressing. I'm quite excited.
0:22:23 > 0:22:26With both designers talking the talk,
0:22:26 > 0:22:28the judges' expectations will be high.
0:22:28 > 0:22:31They'll see what they come up with later on.
0:22:35 > 0:22:37It's the afternoon of day one
0:22:37 > 0:22:41and there's a long way to go for both designers.
0:22:41 > 0:22:43Are we all good?
0:22:43 > 0:22:45Yeah, it's all good. Got the main frame going round.
0:22:45 > 0:22:48- Yeah.- So, just getting your uprights for the doors.
0:22:48 > 0:22:50Then we'll start working on the shelves.
0:22:50 > 0:22:52While Sarah's driving her team
0:22:52 > 0:22:54to achieve her ambitious wardrobe design,
0:22:54 > 0:22:56Jamie's sitting down on the job.
0:22:58 > 0:23:00Need thousands of strips.
0:23:00 > 0:23:02Thousands, thousands, thousands.
0:23:02 > 0:23:06He's making a ruffled cushion by poking offcuts of material
0:23:06 > 0:23:08through a piece of hessian.
0:23:08 > 0:23:09So, once you've got them in,
0:23:09 > 0:23:11it looks like a bow. Then you do them in rows.
0:23:11 > 0:23:14Leaving a little bit of a gap, you can do the next row,
0:23:14 > 0:23:18they'll kind of pull together and create the ruffle kind of texture.
0:23:18 > 0:23:20First couple are really slow.
0:23:23 > 0:23:27But once you've got a few in a row you fly with it.
0:23:27 > 0:23:29Jamie's chilled-out vibe could be fleeting
0:23:29 > 0:23:31as back home from university
0:23:31 > 0:23:34to check on progress, his client, Betty.
0:23:34 > 0:23:37It is kind of scary to think that she could disagree
0:23:37 > 0:23:39with something that I've done.
0:23:39 > 0:23:43Betty's mum was worried Jamie's chosen colours could be too pale.
0:23:43 > 0:23:46If Betty agrees it could mean a complete rethink.
0:23:46 > 0:23:49- I really like the green.- Yeah, I really like the green.
0:23:49 > 0:23:50And I like this colour, as well.
0:23:50 > 0:23:52- I didn't think I would but I do. - Good.
0:23:52 > 0:23:55It seems Jamie needn't have worried.
0:23:55 > 0:23:59- I'm so glad it's not bland, which it completely is the opposite.- Good.
0:23:59 > 0:24:02- Good. I'm pleased. - I'm really excited.
0:24:02 > 0:24:04- Yes. Good.- I'm really excited.
0:24:06 > 0:24:09'I feel over the moon with the reaction from Betty.'
0:24:09 > 0:24:12That's one of the points that you need to do - please your homeowner.
0:24:12 > 0:24:15That's certainly what I've done so, yeah, I'm really happy.
0:24:22 > 0:24:27As day one draws to a close, both designers are feeling confident.
0:24:27 > 0:24:30- I'm really happy. I'm happy with the way it's gone today.- Yeah.
0:24:30 > 0:24:33We've got masses done when I didn't think we would get that much done.
0:24:33 > 0:24:36I think that's how I feel. Like, sometimes on the first day,
0:24:36 > 0:24:38I haven't even got any paint on the walls.
0:24:38 > 0:24:41While Jamie's had his colour scheme approved...
0:24:41 > 0:24:44I feel really confident now.
0:24:44 > 0:24:46I feel like I can kind of get through to the next stage.
0:24:46 > 0:24:49..Sarah's still fretting about hers.
0:24:49 > 0:24:53Whoa! That is insanely intense.
0:24:53 > 0:24:56The yellow on my walls is a bit brighter than...
0:24:56 > 0:24:59- You thought.- ..I envisaged.
0:24:59 > 0:25:02Not that she's letting it dent her confidence.
0:25:02 > 0:25:05Great day today. Think I'm going to go and have a glass of wine now.
0:25:05 > 0:25:08Maybe a big pint.
0:25:24 > 0:25:29The first day brought straight lines and an awful lot of bright paint.
0:25:29 > 0:25:33But the designers still have lots to do to secure a quarterfinal place.
0:25:33 > 0:25:37We've got to kind of just push ahead to be the winner.
0:25:37 > 0:25:40I'm really excited today. Today is like the day
0:25:40 > 0:25:43where you really start to see everything come together.
0:25:43 > 0:25:47Sarah's contemporary room is a long way off a cool retreat, though,
0:25:47 > 0:25:51and she's yet to convince anyone on her choice of colours,
0:25:51 > 0:25:53including her decorator.
0:25:53 > 0:25:55I wouldn't really put them together myself
0:25:55 > 0:25:59but I'm sure it's going to look great at the end of the day.
0:25:59 > 0:26:01HE LAUGHS
0:26:01 > 0:26:05More worryingly, Sarah's homeowner still has serious doubts.
0:26:05 > 0:26:08Not about the putty colour any more, but the bright yellow.
0:26:08 > 0:26:10It's just the massive block of yellow.
0:26:10 > 0:26:12It's very bright isn't it? It's strong.
0:26:12 > 0:26:14- It's a brighter yellow than in my mind's eye.- Yeah.
0:26:14 > 0:26:18- It sees a bright yellow but it's a neon-y, acid-y yellow.- Yeah.
0:26:18 > 0:26:22As ever, unflappable Sarah isn't wavering.
0:26:22 > 0:26:25- There's a huge block of the putty going up now...- OK, excellent.
0:26:25 > 0:26:29..so that's going to really calm it down.
0:26:29 > 0:26:31- OK.- You'll see lots of change today.
0:26:33 > 0:26:37Also undergoing big change - Jamie's hippy-chic bedroom.
0:26:37 > 0:26:40The second coat of mint green is going up while he's busy
0:26:40 > 0:26:44outside priming scaffolding planks for his statement headboard.
0:26:44 > 0:26:47I'm just giving them a coat of white paint before I put the intense
0:26:47 > 0:26:51pink on, so when I distress them the whiteness comes through.
0:26:51 > 0:26:53I'm excited now to get these done,
0:26:53 > 0:26:55get them distressed, get them waxed, and then get them
0:26:55 > 0:26:57onto the headboard and see.
0:26:57 > 0:27:01Jamie is getting industrious and back in the day,
0:27:01 > 0:27:04Marlow, too, was a centre of industry.
0:27:04 > 0:27:07It's easy to forget how important the River Thames was
0:27:07 > 0:27:10to the economy and history of towns like Marlow.
0:27:10 > 0:27:13The town's wealth was literally built on it.
0:27:13 > 0:27:16Water mills made anything from thimbles to paper
0:27:16 > 0:27:18and the river would once have been lined with
0:27:18 > 0:27:20the cottages of eelmen, wharfingers and bargees
0:27:20 > 0:27:23before they were replaced by the grander homes
0:27:23 > 0:27:25of the Victorians and the Georgians.
0:27:25 > 0:27:29And you can see exactly why. It's not a bad life here on the river.
0:27:31 > 0:27:34The mill on this spot was powered by so-called rushes.
0:27:34 > 0:27:36There's one right here.
0:27:36 > 0:27:39As the concentrated force of the river flowed through it,
0:27:39 > 0:27:43it powered a water wheel, providing energy in the pre-electric times.
0:27:43 > 0:27:48Most have now disappeared, but this one remains as a nod to the past.
0:27:50 > 0:27:54As well as their room schemes the amateurs need to prove to the
0:27:54 > 0:27:57judges their design abilities, turning junk from the back of a van
0:27:57 > 0:27:59into something special.
0:27:59 > 0:28:01This is going to be a time challenge.
0:28:01 > 0:28:04We're giving them 90 minutes to see if they can keep their cool
0:28:04 > 0:28:08under pressure, and yet, deliver a quality product.
0:28:08 > 0:28:11Jamie picked an old suitcase and a wooden stool.
0:28:11 > 0:28:13First idea that I've come up with
0:28:13 > 0:28:17is creating a storage and seating area with this suitcase.
0:28:17 > 0:28:19So, the back will be padded and covered
0:28:19 > 0:28:21in this tie-dye fabric, and then the bottom,
0:28:21 > 0:28:23I'm going to be using the excess scaffolding boards.
0:28:23 > 0:28:25I don't know if I can win,
0:28:25 > 0:28:28but this is something that I'll love and something that I will do.
0:28:28 > 0:28:33Sarah decided to use a '70s pouf, a hostess trolley and leatherette.
0:28:33 > 0:28:37Let's see if there's a way that we can take these feet off...
0:28:38 > 0:28:41..and put them on the bottom of this.
0:28:41 > 0:28:44And then cover the pouf...
0:28:45 > 0:28:48..with leather...ette.
0:28:51 > 0:28:55- Both designers have a basic craft box...- I'm not impressed.
0:28:55 > 0:28:58And their builders at their disposal.
0:28:58 > 0:29:01- You want to fit it onto that stool?- Yeah.
0:29:01 > 0:29:04Jamie is cleverly using left over scaffolding boards to create
0:29:04 > 0:29:08a seat in the suitcase while he hastily makes a cushion.
0:29:08 > 0:29:11As you can tell, I haven't cut anything neat at all.
0:29:11 > 0:29:15Literally rushed to get it done. Crazy things.
0:29:17 > 0:29:19Jamie's come up with a brilliant idea.
0:29:19 > 0:29:22He's got a multifunctional piece of furniture that's a stool,
0:29:22 > 0:29:26a table and storage. He is CLEARLY out to impress.
0:29:30 > 0:29:34I'm not used to upholstering 1970s poufs in leatherette.
0:29:34 > 0:29:37It's going to be a rush.
0:29:38 > 0:29:40Sarah has decided to keep things simple,
0:29:40 > 0:29:44giving her pouf a face-lift and fitting wheels from her trolley.
0:29:44 > 0:29:46I'm actually not that impressed by Sarah's idea,
0:29:46 > 0:29:49she's sticking wheels on a pouf and upholstering it in leather.
0:29:49 > 0:29:52I was expecting something far more creative
0:29:52 > 0:29:54and left-field thinking from her.
0:29:54 > 0:29:57F, F, F, F, F, F, F.
0:29:58 > 0:30:00Jamie's cushion might be finished,
0:30:00 > 0:30:03but his inexperience is once more showing through.
0:30:03 > 0:30:06- Johnny...- Yeah? - I know you're a builder,
0:30:06 > 0:30:10- how would you stick that cushion to the back of that?- How would I?- Yeah.
0:30:10 > 0:30:13- What, to the underside of the lid there?- Yeah.
0:30:13 > 0:30:16I don't really know, to tell you the truth.
0:30:16 > 0:30:19I mean, you'd need to, I think, sew it in, somehow, I think.
0:30:22 > 0:30:26I don't think I've hand-sewn anything in my life.
0:30:26 > 0:30:28Haven't.
0:30:28 > 0:30:29Her pouf upholstered,
0:30:29 > 0:30:33the usually-confident Sarah is doubting herself.
0:30:33 > 0:30:35God, it's knowing when to stop, isn't it?
0:30:35 > 0:30:38Cos that's actually
0:30:38 > 0:30:39really cute.
0:30:42 > 0:30:46Maybe I will just do another leather detail around it.
0:30:48 > 0:30:54Almost so it is bowed, that is what I'm going to do, that's clever.
0:30:54 > 0:30:59Jamie is painting his scaffolding seat pink but the time is ticking
0:30:59 > 0:31:03away fast and both designers are beginning to feel the strain.
0:31:03 > 0:31:04Go under!
0:31:06 > 0:31:07HE YELLS IN FRUSTRATION
0:31:08 > 0:31:10This is cutting it really fine.
0:31:19 > 0:31:20I am done.
0:31:22 > 0:31:26How well they've done transforming their junk is an important part
0:31:26 > 0:31:29of determining who will win a place in the quarterfinal
0:31:29 > 0:31:31and at least one of the designers is worried.
0:31:32 > 0:31:36It just looks the same as what it was - a heap of junk.
0:31:36 > 0:31:39I'm stoked, I think it looks brilliant.
0:31:39 > 0:31:42It looks so cute, it looks like a cake.
0:31:42 > 0:31:45The judges will let the paint dry before deciding which product
0:31:45 > 0:31:46is best later on.
0:31:52 > 0:31:55Meanwhile, work hasn't stopped in the rooms.
0:31:55 > 0:31:57In Sarah's contemporary scheme, the yellow and putty paint job is
0:31:57 > 0:32:03finished but she's pushing her team, varnishing the ambitious wardrobe.
0:32:03 > 0:32:07- HE SINGS:- Happy, happy, joy, joy, happy, happy, joy, joy.
0:32:07 > 0:32:09- I love painting... - HE LAUGHS
0:32:10 > 0:32:13With her new-found passion for upholstery,
0:32:13 > 0:32:18Sarah is covering a chair she bought for just £12 from a car-boot sale.
0:32:18 > 0:32:24I should have cut this before I sewed it but I was distracted.
0:32:24 > 0:32:28It is not finished yet, but when it is finished, I think it will rock.
0:32:32 > 0:32:34Jamie's room is rocking along, too.
0:32:34 > 0:32:39The wardrobe carcass is in and his statement headboard is half built.
0:32:39 > 0:32:41Meanwhile, he's trying out a new skill.
0:32:41 > 0:32:45Block printing fabric with bleach and paint for another cushion cover.
0:32:46 > 0:32:48So all I've got is a wooden block,
0:32:48 > 0:32:51so I am literally going to roll a small amount of bleach onto that,
0:32:51 > 0:32:55print it and then you can't see the effect straightaway
0:32:55 > 0:32:57cos obviously it just takes the colour straight out.
0:32:57 > 0:32:59I'll have to buy Chrissie some bleach.
0:33:01 > 0:33:05- INTERVIEWER: Where have you got that from?- The toilet.
0:33:05 > 0:33:08It is a cost-effective way of creating pattern on the cheap.
0:33:08 > 0:33:12Now, he just needs to sew it up.
0:33:16 > 0:33:18HE LAUGHS
0:33:20 > 0:33:21I've sewn it the wrong way.
0:33:21 > 0:33:24It is a quick unpick and take two.
0:33:25 > 0:33:28Right. And then now, I can cut all this excess fabric off,
0:33:28 > 0:33:31turn it inside out and it will be a cushion cover.
0:33:34 > 0:33:36It's worked out perfect.
0:33:38 > 0:33:41I hear you've been trying out a new skill with some bleaching
0:33:41 > 0:33:42and some blocks, is that right?
0:33:42 > 0:33:44Yeah, it is the first time I've ever done it,
0:33:44 > 0:33:48but researching into different cultures, how they print fabrics,
0:33:48 > 0:33:50I found a really cool printing block which links in with clothing
0:33:50 > 0:33:52that she has got in the room and fabrics
0:33:52 > 0:33:55and I wanted to try it out and it has worked out really well.
0:33:55 > 0:33:57You have been loading the room with colour
0:33:57 > 0:33:59and each round, you have been getting bolder
0:33:59 > 0:34:01and bolder with your use of pattern and colour.
0:34:01 > 0:34:02Where's that come from?
0:34:02 > 0:34:06Erm, I don't know, it is kind of scary, especially this one,
0:34:06 > 0:34:09kind of bold, vibrant, putting mad colours together
0:34:09 > 0:34:10and grouping them together,
0:34:10 > 0:34:13making sure they work and not kind of just clash.
0:34:13 > 0:34:14Clever, very clever.
0:34:16 > 0:34:18Sarah is being rather clever, too,
0:34:18 > 0:34:23making handles for her wardrobe from a leather belt and industrial bolts.
0:34:23 > 0:34:26I wanted to do something quite masculine and industrial
0:34:26 > 0:34:30so it was a perfect solution and these are brilliant,
0:34:30 > 0:34:35brilliant bolts and I think that whole thing cost me about 50p.
0:34:37 > 0:34:41Upstairs, her uber-modern yellow and putty paint job is finished
0:34:41 > 0:34:45but it has been a concern for homeowner Lynne since day one.
0:34:45 > 0:34:50I am worried. I'm worried that I may have been too bold with asking for
0:34:50 > 0:34:55bright yellow and bright colours and maybe it is a little bit too bright.
0:34:55 > 0:34:58If she's still unhappy now the putty has gone up, too,
0:34:58 > 0:35:01Sarah might have to rethink and repaint.
0:35:02 > 0:35:05I am worried. It's one of my main concerns, always,
0:35:05 > 0:35:06that the homeowner loves it.
0:35:06 > 0:35:09I don't want to do something that they are really going to hate
0:35:09 > 0:35:12and is going to cause lots of upset, it's their home.
0:35:12 > 0:35:15- Whoo!- Hello.- Hello.
0:35:17 > 0:35:20Hey, I like it, I like-I like the putty colour.
0:35:20 > 0:35:22SARAH LAUGHS NERVOUSLY
0:35:22 > 0:35:24- I didn't think...- That's what I was hoping to hear.
0:35:24 > 0:35:28- I really didn't think I would and I love you breaking up that.- Yeah.
0:35:28 > 0:35:30That is really cool, actually.
0:35:30 > 0:35:33Encouraged, Sarah gets carried away.
0:35:33 > 0:35:37And when it is dressed, you will see all the areas and how they all work.
0:35:37 > 0:35:40This is really simple which means that we can go a bit more bonkers
0:35:40 > 0:35:41on the other side.
0:35:41 > 0:35:43"A bit more bonkers",
0:35:43 > 0:35:44that is a bit worrying.
0:35:46 > 0:35:50With her homeowner's fears allayed, more or less, Sarah makes a start on
0:35:50 > 0:35:54her magnetic tape which she bought off the internet for around £20.
0:35:54 > 0:35:59But laid-back Sarah is coming a bit unstuck.
0:35:59 > 0:36:00Oh.
0:36:00 > 0:36:01Whoopsie.
0:36:03 > 0:36:05What are all those crazy shapes about?
0:36:05 > 0:36:07It feels like you are being yanked - your eye - from one side
0:36:07 > 0:36:10to the next, to the next, to the next, to the next
0:36:10 > 0:36:12- cos it's quite like... - HE MAKES EXPLODING NOISES
0:36:12 > 0:36:14Yanked?
0:36:14 > 0:36:16Was yanking not what you wanted?
0:36:16 > 0:36:18No, I wanted a smooth flow around the room,
0:36:18 > 0:36:23I wanted to connect each part of the room together by using that line.
0:36:23 > 0:36:28So, it works, obviously, but maybe faster than I appreciated.
0:36:29 > 0:36:31Jamie is working pretty fast, too.
0:36:31 > 0:36:34His distressed pink scaffolding boards are finally ready
0:36:34 > 0:36:36to be attached to the bedhead...
0:36:36 > 0:36:37That's looking good.
0:36:37 > 0:36:41..and he's growing ever more confident with his colour scheme.
0:36:41 > 0:36:44It's a great set of colour that I think I have chosen
0:36:44 > 0:36:49and Betty seems to like them so I have got something right.
0:36:49 > 0:36:51Now Jamie's got colour on the walls, I have to admit,
0:36:51 > 0:36:53it's looking rather good and I am surprised to say that
0:36:53 > 0:36:58cos there's actually five bold colours all in one small room.
0:36:58 > 0:37:00He doesn't understand the theory behind why they work.
0:37:00 > 0:37:02I think it's cos they're all tonally similar.
0:37:02 > 0:37:05He's been quite intuitive,
0:37:05 > 0:37:06but it has paid off.
0:37:06 > 0:37:08With his confidence on the up,
0:37:08 > 0:37:12Jamie decides to get a sneaky peek of the competition.
0:37:12 > 0:37:14What's that you're you sticking up - magnet?
0:37:14 > 0:37:18- This is magnet tape.- Cool. Are you having things hanging off it?
0:37:18 > 0:37:21I've got some magnets to go on it.
0:37:21 > 0:37:23That's so cool and I love how it's black in there.
0:37:23 > 0:37:26Yeah, it needed some black. Grrr.
0:37:26 > 0:37:29- Manly.- It is the stressful part now.
0:37:29 > 0:37:31Well, for me it is. Looks like you're nearly finished.
0:37:31 > 0:37:36I'm doing all right, it is my poor builder I am worried about,
0:37:36 > 0:37:39- who's on the point of exhaustion. - JAMIE LAUGHS
0:37:39 > 0:37:42Oh, It looks amazing.
0:37:42 > 0:37:46It's somewhere that I would want to have as a bedroom and...
0:37:46 > 0:37:48Yeah, I'm scared now.
0:37:50 > 0:37:54Sarah's room has rattled Jamie but both amateurs are aiming high with
0:37:54 > 0:37:59their designs, an ethos shared by the architect of this development.
0:37:59 > 0:38:04The 1960s were the era of the tower block and the skyscraper
0:38:04 > 0:38:07and these homes do have a touch of the high-rise about them,
0:38:07 > 0:38:09but here, it is mostly about trying to maximise
0:38:09 > 0:38:13the space inside on a very, very tight spot
0:38:13 > 0:38:15and giving great views from the top, over the river,
0:38:15 > 0:38:18both, great selling points to those aspiring buyers,
0:38:18 > 0:38:22hoping to better themselves in this age of upward social mobility.
0:38:24 > 0:38:29Back in 1967, these properties sold for £17,000 a pop,
0:38:29 > 0:38:31far from small fry at the time,
0:38:31 > 0:38:35but, at least, thrown in at that price was a mooring for every house.
0:38:35 > 0:38:38When they were built, the vision behind developments like these -
0:38:38 > 0:38:41exclusive ones - was to give families a high standard of living,
0:38:41 > 0:38:44an easy life, but also to foster a sense of community
0:38:44 > 0:38:47so communal gardens like these were provided,
0:38:47 > 0:38:49very typical of the era, but also reflecting
0:38:49 > 0:38:52the belief at the time that young families might have wanted
0:38:52 > 0:38:55big gardens but they no longer had the time to look after them.
0:39:02 > 0:39:05Time isn't in abundance for our designers either
0:39:05 > 0:39:08but Sarah is powering on with new light fittings.
0:39:08 > 0:39:11This is going to come from that ceiling fitting up there and then
0:39:11 > 0:39:16the cable is going to come down the wall and fit to the wall down there.
0:39:16 > 0:39:20She's designed a tropical leaf shape and had it cut out in Perspex.
0:39:20 > 0:39:23With the help of a suitable shop-bought fitting,
0:39:23 > 0:39:26Sarah has created a bespoke light for £30.
0:39:27 > 0:39:28Fabulous.
0:39:34 > 0:39:37- It's nearly the end of day two. - Things are coming together.
0:39:37 > 0:39:40The wardrobe has now been painted. It's had two coats on the main side.
0:39:40 > 0:39:42I just want to get the door sorted now,
0:39:42 > 0:39:44so they can put straight on tomorrow
0:39:44 > 0:39:46and I need to finish the textured cushion
0:39:46 > 0:39:49and other than that, I think we...
0:39:49 > 0:39:50It is going good.
0:39:50 > 0:39:54A quarterfinal place is at stake and both amateurs want to be there.
0:39:56 > 0:39:59I'm tired but I'm relieved and I am happy.
0:39:59 > 0:40:02I'm really enjoying it now, I don't want to go home.
0:40:02 > 0:40:06Well, I want to go home, but I don't want to go HOME, home.
0:40:06 > 0:40:09- JAMIE:- Who knows what's going to happen tomorrow?
0:40:09 > 0:40:11Either way I'm going to be excited,
0:40:11 > 0:40:13but, obviously, I'd prefer me to get through.
0:40:13 > 0:40:15But, yeah, just wait and see.
0:40:15 > 0:40:18Whatever happens happens for a reason.
0:40:29 > 0:40:31It's the start of day three,
0:40:31 > 0:40:34and our two amateurs can't afford to let up for a moment
0:40:34 > 0:40:37if they want to win a place in the quarterfinals.
0:40:37 > 0:40:38Morning!
0:40:38 > 0:40:42I've woken up this morning a little bit bleary, but...
0:40:43 > 0:40:45I'm going to kill it today.
0:40:45 > 0:40:46SHE LAUGHS
0:40:46 > 0:40:49- JAMIE:- I think now, getting through to this stage,
0:40:49 > 0:40:50I'm believing in myself more,
0:40:50 > 0:40:52and believing that I could win this competition.
0:40:52 > 0:40:55At the end of the day, Sophie and Daniel will scrutinise
0:40:55 > 0:40:58the rooms for creativity, quality of finish
0:40:58 > 0:41:00and how well the brief is met
0:41:00 > 0:41:03to decide who will stay and who will go.
0:41:03 > 0:41:05We're so close to the quarterfinals,
0:41:05 > 0:41:09and I really do want to get there to show kind of more skills
0:41:09 > 0:41:11and more design ideas that I have.
0:41:11 > 0:41:13I'm super planned,
0:41:13 > 0:41:14super organised,
0:41:14 > 0:41:16super Sarah.
0:41:22 > 0:41:25In Sarah's room, the ambitious wardrobe is nearly done,
0:41:25 > 0:41:29but she's got yet more work for her builder - her bedside table.
0:41:29 > 0:41:32It's got a shelf going across it. Supposed to be at this level,
0:41:32 > 0:41:34but I think I'd quite like to bring that one a bit higher.
0:41:34 > 0:41:37- And then that's all done and you can just...- OK, so I do that next?
0:41:37 > 0:41:40- Yes, I think so.- And then, do the door, yeah?- Yeah.
0:41:42 > 0:41:46Meanwhile, Sarah's having another sticky moment with magnetic tape.
0:41:46 > 0:41:48Never use adhesive magnetic tape again.
0:41:48 > 0:41:50SHE LAUGHS
0:41:51 > 0:41:54Now, Sarah - there's a lot of faffing going in on in that room.
0:41:54 > 0:41:58Well, she's still got quite a lot of the build to do. There are bedside tables to make.
0:41:58 > 0:42:00What it is is a very, very ambitious project.
0:42:00 > 0:42:04Well, you wanted her to become more contemporary. Do you think she's gone a bit too far?
0:42:04 > 0:42:06She could never go too far for contemporary with me.
0:42:06 > 0:42:08I just LOVE it.
0:42:08 > 0:42:10Jamie has got his work cut out for him -
0:42:10 > 0:42:13quite literally, as once again, he's stencilling.
0:42:15 > 0:42:16I actually hate stencilling.
0:42:16 > 0:42:19It's just an easy way to add pattern to something.
0:42:19 > 0:42:21It's not something I would use personally,
0:42:21 > 0:42:25but I think it just works within the scheme that I've been doing.
0:42:25 > 0:42:28If I get through, I'm not going to use it again.
0:42:28 > 0:42:29HE LAUGHS
0:42:29 > 0:42:32Extra storage was on the brief, and he knows
0:42:32 > 0:42:36he needs to prove to the judges he can nail the spatial planning.
0:42:36 > 0:42:40- Well, that's where the door's going to come to. About there.- Yeah.
0:42:40 > 0:42:42- Yeah, that'll be fine.- Yeah?
0:42:44 > 0:42:47- Maybe along a little few centimetres.- That way, yeah?
0:42:49 > 0:42:51Now, you've had misgivings about Jamie,
0:42:51 > 0:42:53about the practicality of his designs
0:42:53 > 0:42:55and the functionality of them. Is he solving them this time?
0:42:55 > 0:42:57He's having a really good stab at it.
0:42:57 > 0:43:00He's got an absolutely massive wardrobe in the corner of the room.
0:43:00 > 0:43:03The headboard's in there now which is going to add extra storage, too.
0:43:03 > 0:43:05So, I think he is answering the brief.
0:43:05 > 0:43:07We're yet to see it all come together,
0:43:07 > 0:43:09and I think with creating this look,
0:43:09 > 0:43:12it is so in the dressing and the accessories,
0:43:12 > 0:43:14so that's what I'm holding out for.
0:43:14 > 0:43:18Dressing these attic rooms is easier said than done, though.
0:43:18 > 0:43:20Have you ever tried moving a mattress yourself?
0:43:28 > 0:43:30Why are there so many stairs?
0:43:36 > 0:43:39The designers' three-day challenge is almost over.
0:43:39 > 0:43:41Oh, that's lovely.
0:43:41 > 0:43:42Sarah started strongly,
0:43:42 > 0:43:46as she was deemed the best when it came to presenting her ideas.
0:43:46 > 0:43:50Now, Sophie and Daniel must decide who coped best under pressure
0:43:50 > 0:43:53designing something out of a load of old junk.
0:43:53 > 0:43:56There is nothing more I could have done in 90 minutes.
0:43:56 > 0:43:59It's well made, it's really well upcycled,
0:43:59 > 0:44:01it's cool.
0:44:01 > 0:44:03I'd have that in my house any day of the week.
0:44:03 > 0:44:07It's amazing to think that I could get to the quarterfinals.
0:44:07 > 0:44:10A win here could secure Jamie his place.
0:44:10 > 0:44:12So, judges, what a challenge.
0:44:12 > 0:44:14Making silk purses out of sow's ears - I don't fancy it myself.
0:44:14 > 0:44:17This is Sarah's. She hasn't actually done a lot -
0:44:17 > 0:44:19she's just sort of put a strap of leatherette around a vintage pouffe
0:44:19 > 0:44:21and some hostess trolley wheels on the bottom.
0:44:21 > 0:44:24- But it's all about the simplicity. - Oh, is it?- Yes.
0:44:24 > 0:44:26I could see you in a pair of Capri pants sitting on that,
0:44:26 > 0:44:29- looking very chic. - OK, well, let's try that, shall we?
0:44:29 > 0:44:30- Whooa!- Whoo!
0:44:30 > 0:44:33- OK!- It's nice to look at, but it's not very useful.
0:44:33 > 0:44:35What about Jamie's? Let's look at Jamie's.
0:44:35 > 0:44:37Well, I had high hopes for this,
0:44:37 > 0:44:40- because this is a multifunctional piece of furniture.- Oh, really?
0:44:40 > 0:44:42He is trying to offer storage, a seat...
0:44:42 > 0:44:44This is trying too hard.
0:44:44 > 0:44:46Oh, I like his ambition.
0:44:46 > 0:44:47Do the Sophie test.
0:44:47 > 0:44:51- Well, I'm not falling over, so it's more practical than that. - So, you can sit on it.
0:44:51 > 0:44:53- But I'm not going to lean back. - I've got to be behind it.
0:44:53 > 0:44:57- It's not beautiful, and it's almost useful.- Mm.
0:44:57 > 0:45:00Come on, Sophie, you're not going to have that in your own home.
0:45:00 > 0:45:02The judges are divided,
0:45:02 > 0:45:05but they have to come to a unanimous decision.
0:45:06 > 0:45:08So, out of the pair of them, who's won?
0:45:08 > 0:45:11- This is the best product design, isn't it, overall?- I'm with you.
0:45:11 > 0:45:14- Think it's probably going to be Sarah.- I think Sarah, too.
0:45:15 > 0:45:17Sarah won, but it was a close-run thing,
0:45:17 > 0:45:20and quite frankly, neither of them impressed us that much.
0:45:21 > 0:45:24It'll come down to the all-important room reveals,
0:45:24 > 0:45:27and Sarah's time is almost up.
0:45:28 > 0:45:30Doesn't matter how organised you are,
0:45:30 > 0:45:32it's always rushed to the end.
0:45:33 > 0:45:35She's spent her £1,000 budget
0:45:35 > 0:45:38delivering a masculine, minimal look...
0:45:38 > 0:45:40Perfect.
0:45:40 > 0:45:42..for Jay, who's away travelling.
0:45:42 > 0:45:45Little nod to the travel.
0:45:45 > 0:45:48After clashing with his mum Lynn over colour choices,
0:45:48 > 0:45:51will the final look win her a place in the quarterfinal?
0:45:52 > 0:45:54That's me done.
0:45:57 > 0:45:58Went really well.
0:45:58 > 0:46:00Went REALLY well, actually.
0:46:00 > 0:46:02I love it.
0:46:04 > 0:46:08Sarah's brief was to create a cool, contemporary, masculine retreat.
0:46:10 > 0:46:12Three days ago, the room was bland and boyish.
0:46:17 > 0:46:20Now Sarah has created a minimal, modern bachelor pad.
0:46:21 > 0:46:24In her bid for contemporary, she's zoned the room
0:46:24 > 0:46:26with layered shades of yellow and putty,
0:46:26 > 0:46:29uniting them with a magnetic graphic line.
0:46:31 > 0:46:33She's designed a desk and storage unit,
0:46:33 > 0:46:36and created a seating area with an upcycled chair.
0:46:38 > 0:46:42She has completed the look with handmade ethnic cushions,
0:46:42 > 0:46:45and a bespoke tropical plant light.
0:46:45 > 0:46:47Think I've nailed the brief.
0:46:47 > 0:46:48It's cool.
0:46:54 > 0:46:58- Pretty amazing transformation. - They asked for impact...
0:46:58 > 0:47:02- And you have it here.- Yes!- Wow. - In buckets, actually.
0:47:02 > 0:47:05Is this fulfilling your angle quota? Cos they are everywhere in here.
0:47:05 > 0:47:09- Yeah, this is right up my boulevard, as they say. - THEY LAUGH
0:47:09 > 0:47:11Because it's really clever and it's really unexpected,
0:47:11 > 0:47:14and the angles are actually not just there for decoration,
0:47:14 > 0:47:17- they're cleverly zoning this space. - Exactly.
0:47:17 > 0:47:20What they're doing is creating an atmosphere over the bed
0:47:20 > 0:47:22that's warming it up here,
0:47:22 > 0:47:25and also the little seating area that we've got in the corner.
0:47:25 > 0:47:29And at the same time, those lines are making your eyes move around
0:47:29 > 0:47:32the room and are fighting against the apex of the roof really nicely.
0:47:32 > 0:47:36- But look, this is a bedroom.- Mm-hm. - It's somewhere to come and relax.
0:47:36 > 0:47:38- Jump in.- Can I jump in? - Yeah, why not?
0:47:39 > 0:47:41- Ooh. I like it.- It's pretty jazzy.
0:47:41 > 0:47:43- SHE LAUGHS - Oh, you like it.
0:47:43 > 0:47:45I like the perspective.
0:47:45 > 0:47:47OK, but look this way, and I'm just seeing sort of black lines
0:47:47 > 0:47:51and yellow blocks streaking everywhere.
0:47:51 > 0:47:53It needs softening off.
0:47:53 > 0:47:56I mean, my criticism is, maybe this is over-stylised.
0:47:56 > 0:47:59I know. But you can never be over-stylised.
0:47:59 > 0:48:00THEY LAUGH
0:48:00 > 0:48:05Important to the judges' decision is what the client thinks of the room.
0:48:05 > 0:48:06You're always a bit trepidatious.
0:48:06 > 0:48:10Not entirely sure what they're going to think of it.
0:48:10 > 0:48:13Jay's mum and dad will give their verdict.
0:48:13 > 0:48:16- Ooh, wow. Gosh.- Oh, my word.
0:48:16 > 0:48:17Wow, look at this.
0:48:17 > 0:48:20- Oh, I love it. It's so minimal! - THEY LAUGH
0:48:20 > 0:48:22- You like the minimal look? - Yeah, I do.- Fantastic.
0:48:22 > 0:48:24It was so cluttered before,
0:48:24 > 0:48:27but looks really cool now, doesn't it?
0:48:27 > 0:48:30- Great room. I think we should move in. - HE LAUGHS
0:48:30 > 0:48:33It's too cool for us. Far too cool for us.
0:48:33 > 0:48:36And what do you think Jay will think?
0:48:36 > 0:48:38He will love it. He really will love it.
0:48:38 > 0:48:41I don't know what else to say. I'm wonderfully impressed.
0:48:41 > 0:48:43Seriously, I really am, though.
0:48:43 > 0:48:45THEY LAUGH
0:48:45 > 0:48:47With his deadline fast approaching,
0:48:47 > 0:48:50Jamie has got a lot of dressing to do.
0:48:50 > 0:48:52I'm absolutely sweating.
0:48:52 > 0:48:55Having spent more than half his budget on accessories...
0:48:55 > 0:48:58The big dreamcatcher, which I don't know where it's... Ah.
0:48:58 > 0:48:59Where's it gone?
0:48:59 > 0:49:02He's relying on these finishing touches to create
0:49:02 > 0:49:04the hippy-chic vibe.
0:49:04 > 0:49:06She'll be sweating when she gets into bed.
0:49:06 > 0:49:08There's, like, a million throws on it.
0:49:08 > 0:49:11His client's mum, Chrissie, had serious reservations
0:49:11 > 0:49:14about the richness of the scheme, so he must make sure
0:49:14 > 0:49:19the overall look is spot-on if he's to become a quarterfinalist.
0:49:19 > 0:49:21It's like cushion overload, isn't it?
0:49:21 > 0:49:22HE LAUGHS
0:49:22 > 0:49:23Craziness.
0:49:26 > 0:49:28OK, I'm finished.
0:49:38 > 0:49:41I'm loving the room, and it's absolutely incredible.
0:49:41 > 0:49:45It's got quite a kind of cool vibe with it,
0:49:45 > 0:49:47which is kind of what I wanted to bring.
0:49:48 > 0:49:51Jamie's brief was to create a colourful, hippy chic bedroom.
0:49:51 > 0:49:55Three days ago, the room had plenty of colour, but bordered on garish.
0:49:59 > 0:50:03Now Jamie's created an Indian-sari inspired scheme,
0:50:03 > 0:50:06contrasting orange, teal, pink and green.
0:50:07 > 0:50:10He's added a wardrobe built into the eaves
0:50:10 > 0:50:12and further storage in the headboard.
0:50:12 > 0:50:14And in his bid for hippy,
0:50:14 > 0:50:17he's made a beanbag and cushions,
0:50:17 > 0:50:21while creating further mood with shop-bought items -
0:50:21 > 0:50:25throws, wall hangings, dreamcatchers and a Moroccan lamp.
0:50:25 > 0:50:27I'm always quite excited for the judging,
0:50:27 > 0:50:29no matter whether it's negative or positive,
0:50:29 > 0:50:32cos that's where you need to learn and kind of progress as a designer.
0:50:34 > 0:50:36Oh, fantastic!
0:50:37 > 0:50:39I was not expecting this.
0:50:39 > 0:50:43He's got the mood and the lighting absolutely spot on.
0:50:43 > 0:50:46- Well, I'm thinking I'm in Jaipur, not Marlow. - SOPHIE LAUGHS
0:50:46 > 0:50:48I want to go and have a look at the cupboard.
0:50:48 > 0:50:51- I mean, it looks big enough for a small family to live in here.- Yeah.
0:50:52 > 0:50:54Oh, yes!
0:50:54 > 0:50:56So that works, from a practical point of view,
0:50:56 > 0:51:00- but it is just a bit of a box. - Because he's painted it the bright colour, which works
0:51:00 > 0:51:04with the whole scheme of things, but it draws your eyes to the weakest point in the room.
0:51:04 > 0:51:07When, in fact, the bed head should be the centre of attention.
0:51:07 > 0:51:10Yeah, that does look pretty cool, doesn't it?
0:51:10 > 0:51:13Got loads of storage down here, and that is jolly useful.
0:51:13 > 0:51:16So, a really multifunctional piece, that.
0:51:16 > 0:51:20Now, there is something about pinning tie-dye bedspreads
0:51:20 > 0:51:23to the ceiling that I just cannot allow.
0:51:23 > 0:51:25That is so wrong. It's such a dated thing.
0:51:25 > 0:51:29I mean, it's up there with, like, paper-ball lampshades and posters of Bob Marley.
0:51:29 > 0:51:31Yeah, but this is the brief.
0:51:31 > 0:51:34This is what this young lady wants to have in her room.
0:51:35 > 0:51:39The end result is kind of better than I thought it was going to be,
0:51:39 > 0:51:42so I'm just excited to see the homeowner's reactions now.
0:51:46 > 0:51:49- Quite a transformation.- Oh, my gosh.
0:51:50 > 0:51:51Stunning.
0:51:51 > 0:51:53It's stunning.
0:51:53 > 0:51:55He's done so well.
0:51:55 > 0:51:56Oh, I feel like I'm going to cry.
0:51:56 > 0:51:59He's done so well. It just doesn't look like the same room.
0:51:59 > 0:52:03- Why do you feel like you're going to cry?- I think I was just so worried. I was thinking,
0:52:03 > 0:52:06he's such a nice chap and I would hate it if I walk in and think,
0:52:06 > 0:52:08"This is awful." It's just lovely.
0:52:09 > 0:52:11Will daughter Betty love it as much?
0:52:12 > 0:52:13Oh, my God.
0:52:14 > 0:52:17Oh, my God, this is amazing!
0:52:17 > 0:52:18My God.
0:52:20 > 0:52:23It literally looks like a completely different room.
0:52:29 > 0:52:31With both rooms scrutinised,
0:52:31 > 0:52:33Sarah and Jamie can do no more.
0:52:33 > 0:52:35- Well done.- I'm happy.
0:52:36 > 0:52:40- Happy, happy?- Really happy. I love it.
0:52:41 > 0:52:44They've grown close throughout the competition,
0:52:44 > 0:52:47but now only one can make it through.
0:52:47 > 0:52:49I can feel myself changing as a person,
0:52:49 > 0:52:52and becoming me, I suppose, and more confident in my designs.
0:52:52 > 0:52:54So, getting through to the final
0:52:54 > 0:52:57and maybe winning it would be life-changing.
0:52:57 > 0:53:00- It was good.- Yeah, it is good.
0:53:00 > 0:53:03I'll walk away a winner no matter what.
0:53:03 > 0:53:05And Jamie, I'll champion him
0:53:05 > 0:53:07the whole way if he gets through.
0:53:07 > 0:53:09But, yeah, I do want to win.
0:53:12 > 0:53:14So, judges, a third round.
0:53:14 > 0:53:16You are going to pick a quarterfinalist,
0:53:16 > 0:53:18so the stakes are pretty high, I guess.
0:53:18 > 0:53:21Yeah, so we've got to be very careful who we choose.
0:53:21 > 0:53:23Which of the two do you think are pulling forward?
0:53:23 > 0:53:25They're both incredibly strong.
0:53:25 > 0:53:28We wanted to see Sarah do something more contemporary,
0:53:28 > 0:53:30a bit more modern - she totally has proved
0:53:30 > 0:53:32that she can be versatile.
0:53:32 > 0:53:35- It's quite an incredible scheme, isn't it?- I loved it.
0:53:35 > 0:53:38You know that I can't hide that at all. I find it very exciting.
0:53:38 > 0:53:39Because it was intelligent design.
0:53:39 > 0:53:42One area where I'm not sure she's progressing
0:53:42 > 0:53:44quite so well is with her colour selections.
0:53:44 > 0:53:47You know, her first project, she got those greens SO wrong.
0:53:47 > 0:53:51And with this project, I feel that that very acidic yellow
0:53:51 > 0:53:53wasn't the right choice for a bedroom.
0:53:53 > 0:53:54It's not restful at all, really.
0:53:54 > 0:53:57How do you think she coped with designing for a client she had never met?
0:53:57 > 0:53:59I think she had a difficult balance, actually,
0:53:59 > 0:54:02because she's also designing for the parents.
0:54:02 > 0:54:04They're the guys who are here approving this brief,
0:54:04 > 0:54:06and they've got a very particular sense of style
0:54:06 > 0:54:08and aesthetic in their own home, too,
0:54:08 > 0:54:10which is very clean, very minimal.
0:54:10 > 0:54:13- What did they think?- They really, really adored it.- Good for them.
0:54:13 > 0:54:16And they thought that their son would love it, as well,
0:54:16 > 0:54:19and they couldn't really wait to get him into the room.
0:54:19 > 0:54:21- Oh, wow.- If he wasn't, you know, travelling around the world.
0:54:21 > 0:54:24Jamie was asked for something that was almost kind of bohemian.
0:54:24 > 0:54:28When I walked in there, it was quite a melange of different things. What did you think of it?
0:54:28 > 0:54:31Well, I think when you're going to do this look,
0:54:31 > 0:54:33you have got to go for it. More is more.
0:54:33 > 0:54:35It's a complete kind of maximalist approach, isn't it?
0:54:35 > 0:54:38It's maximalist, but you've got to be really careful how you do it,
0:54:38 > 0:54:40too, cos it's not RANDOM.
0:54:40 > 0:54:43I know that the homeowner had a go at doing this look previously,
0:54:43 > 0:54:46and they just hadn't pulled it off at all. But Jamie did.
0:54:46 > 0:54:49And what's quite interesting is not only did he pull it off,
0:54:49 > 0:54:51but it was completely out of his field,
0:54:51 > 0:54:52and I'm really impressed by that.
0:54:52 > 0:54:55It seems like on each round he really pushes himself,
0:54:55 > 0:54:58grapples with a very tough brief. When you remember Walthamstow,
0:54:58 > 0:55:00- we had to put a living room in the kitchen.- Yeah.
0:55:00 > 0:55:02He's not had it easy at all, has he?
0:55:02 > 0:55:04He's had some killer briefs, I have to admit.
0:55:04 > 0:55:06And he's met the challenge every time.
0:55:06 > 0:55:10And for someone who's 21, it is outstanding level of confidence.
0:55:10 > 0:55:12Well, the homeowner loved it.
0:55:12 > 0:55:14Loved the clashing colours and patterns and textures,
0:55:14 > 0:55:17and really thought that Jamie had understood her daughter.
0:55:17 > 0:55:19Well, it did feel so special in there.
0:55:19 > 0:55:21He got the mood just right.
0:55:21 > 0:55:24It seems like you've got two really strong designers
0:55:24 > 0:55:28who have come on in leaps and bounds over the competition.
0:55:28 > 0:55:30Exactly. They're so different from each other,
0:55:30 > 0:55:34- and yet, so good, as well. - Yeah, they're both seriously good.
0:55:38 > 0:55:41The judges must now decide which designer shows the most potential
0:55:41 > 0:55:44and deserves that quarterfinal place.
0:55:47 > 0:55:50It's third-round stage, and next, it's the quarterfinals,
0:55:50 > 0:55:53so these two are expecting an awful lot of you.
0:55:53 > 0:55:55But, by golly, you two delivered this time.
0:55:55 > 0:55:58And in really difficult rooms, as well.
0:55:58 > 0:56:00I mean, loft rooms are a nightmare.
0:56:00 > 0:56:02All those angles, to get a comprehensive scheme
0:56:02 > 0:56:05and storage, as well - it's not easy.
0:56:05 > 0:56:07But you guys nailed it.
0:56:07 > 0:56:09And that's why it's been a tough time for us to make a decision,
0:56:09 > 0:56:13because frankly, we think you're both extremely talented.
0:56:16 > 0:56:19The designer going through
0:56:19 > 0:56:21to the quarterfinals is...
0:56:28 > 0:56:29Sarah.
0:56:31 > 0:56:33Well done. You won!
0:56:33 > 0:56:35That's incredible.
0:56:35 > 0:56:36Still on a journey together,
0:56:36 > 0:56:38and I want to know all about next time.
0:56:38 > 0:56:42- Yeah, you're coming with me. - Yeah, I would.- In spirit. - THEY LAUGH
0:56:42 > 0:56:44I am a little bit gutted.
0:56:44 > 0:56:47But over the moon that I've got this far in the competition.
0:56:47 > 0:56:48Like, three rounds in,
0:56:48 > 0:56:50two other amazing designers have gone.
0:56:50 > 0:56:53Yeah, it could have been worse - I could have gone the first week.
0:56:53 > 0:56:54Oh, my God.
0:56:54 > 0:56:58- Do you like it?- Well done! It's bloody beautiful!- Thank you.
0:56:58 > 0:57:01- I'm so happy that you like it. - Oh, it's amazing.- I love it.
0:57:01 > 0:57:04- I don't know how you've done this. - HE LAUGHS
0:57:04 > 0:57:07I am completely heartbroken to have lost Jamie.
0:57:07 > 0:57:09He is so talented.
0:57:09 > 0:57:12So incredibly competent for somebody who's only 21.
0:57:12 > 0:57:15But he does lack just that little bit of maturity.
0:57:15 > 0:57:19But I know he's going to get it, and then he'll be a superstar.
0:57:19 > 0:57:22It's completely changed my life, and I'm not just going to let it slip out of my hands.
0:57:22 > 0:57:25I'm going to take this and kind of run with it,
0:57:25 > 0:57:28and hopefully, in a couple of years, be an interior designer.
0:57:30 > 0:57:32I'm so excited.
0:57:32 > 0:57:34SHE LAUGHS
0:57:34 > 0:57:36That was amazing. I feel awesome.
0:57:36 > 0:57:39I really wanted to get through this one.
0:57:39 > 0:57:41Feel like I'm just getting into my stride.
0:57:41 > 0:57:43Quarterfinals!
0:57:43 > 0:57:46I was blown away by Sarah's project.
0:57:46 > 0:57:49It was totally contemporary, really forward-thinking,
0:57:49 > 0:57:52and showed us something we hadn't seen before. And what's more,
0:57:52 > 0:57:54it shows that she is versatile,
0:57:54 > 0:57:58which is a key ingredient in staying in this competition.
0:58:03 > 0:58:06Next time, in four self-build South London homes,
0:58:06 > 0:58:10a brand-new set of wannabe designers fight it out...
0:58:10 > 0:58:13- I don't think I've ever been this tired.- Perfect.
0:58:13 > 0:58:15..for just three places in the next round.
0:58:15 > 0:58:17The designer going home is...
