0:00:02 > 0:00:05Here in the UK we're blessed with an enormous variety of types and styles
0:00:05 > 0:00:08of buildings that we call home, from thatched cottages,
0:00:08 > 0:00:10to 1930s Art Deco apartments.
0:00:10 > 0:00:14Regency terraces, to contemporary townhouses.
0:00:14 > 0:00:18But sometimes, while the exterior creates a wow factor,
0:00:18 > 0:00:21the interior can be distinctly lacking.
0:00:23 > 0:00:24So we've gathered together
0:00:24 > 0:00:27some of the UK's most talented amateur interior designers
0:00:27 > 0:00:30to show us what they're made of.
0:00:30 > 0:00:33- I'm actually raring to go. - That looks great.
0:00:33 > 0:00:36Argh!
0:00:36 > 0:00:37Work quicker, come on!
0:00:39 > 0:00:44In our first heats, three designers will transform a room each.
0:00:44 > 0:00:47But only two will make it through to the next round.
0:00:47 > 0:00:49I'm feeling a little bit nervous now.
0:00:49 > 0:00:53Putting them through their paces and scrutinising their every move
0:00:53 > 0:00:55are judges Daniel Hopwood,
0:00:55 > 0:00:56designer and a director of
0:00:56 > 0:00:59the British Institute of Interior Design.
0:00:59 > 0:01:01This year, we've got new challenges for the designers.
0:01:01 > 0:01:04We're really going to push them to the limit.
0:01:04 > 0:01:07And internationally renowned interior designer Kelly Hoppen.
0:01:07 > 0:01:11As a judge in this competition, I want to see perfection.
0:01:11 > 0:01:14I think I will be quite a hard judge.
0:01:14 > 0:01:17But it's going to take a lot of creativity and hard work
0:01:17 > 0:01:20to be crowned winner of The Great Interior Design Challenge.
0:01:34 > 0:01:37We're in Pittville, in the beautiful spa town of Cheltenham,
0:01:37 > 0:01:40home to more than 2,500 listed buildings.
0:01:40 > 0:01:42This time, three amateur interior designers
0:01:42 > 0:01:45have been given the task of transforming a bedroom each
0:01:45 > 0:01:48in these imposing Regency terraces.
0:01:51 > 0:01:53They'll have just 48 hours...
0:01:53 > 0:01:55- Lovely, let's go. - That's rather good, isn't it?
0:01:55 > 0:01:57It's not bad, is it?
0:01:57 > 0:01:58..£1,000...
0:01:58 > 0:02:01- Look at the size of the list! - No, that's not just for him.
0:02:01 > 0:02:03- That's for us as well. - ..and a small team,
0:02:03 > 0:02:05including a builder and decorator...
0:02:05 > 0:02:07Yeah, there, perfect, perfect. Quick, quick, quick.
0:02:07 > 0:02:08Is that not upside down?
0:02:11 > 0:02:13..to complete their transformations.
0:02:13 > 0:02:15I've been up since three o'clock this morning.
0:02:15 > 0:02:16Ay, ay, ay...
0:02:16 > 0:02:18They'll need to work hard to impress...
0:02:18 > 0:02:19OK, OK, OK.
0:02:20 > 0:02:23..as only two can go through.
0:02:23 > 0:02:25It's not an easy walk in the park, that's for sure.
0:02:25 > 0:02:27Hopefully it will be enough.
0:02:27 > 0:02:29I would definitely love to go through.
0:02:36 > 0:02:40In 1716, the discovery of a medicinal spring
0:02:40 > 0:02:42with healing properties
0:02:42 > 0:02:45put Cheltenham firmly on the map as a health-giving spa.
0:02:47 > 0:02:51With the end of the Napoleonic Wars, Britain's economy boomed.
0:02:53 > 0:02:56And developers cashed in on Cheltenham's spa town status.
0:02:58 > 0:03:00Joseph Pitt was one such developer
0:03:00 > 0:03:04and had his own grand plans to create a town.
0:03:04 > 0:03:07Very modestly, he decided to call this town Pittville.
0:03:10 > 0:03:13These grand gates form the entrance to the estate,
0:03:13 > 0:03:16adorned with the motto salubritas eruditio -
0:03:16 > 0:03:19health and education.
0:03:19 > 0:03:22Construction started in 1825,
0:03:22 > 0:03:25but soon after, the country was plunged into recession,
0:03:25 > 0:03:28meaning the development was never completed.
0:03:28 > 0:03:32Although Pitt's original grand vision was never fully realised,
0:03:32 > 0:03:35Pittville today is considered to be one of the finest Regency estates
0:03:35 > 0:03:37in the country.
0:03:37 > 0:03:40And hoping to realise their own grand visions today
0:03:40 > 0:03:42are our three competitors.
0:03:45 > 0:03:49The first designer is 27-year-old professional dog walker Katie,
0:03:49 > 0:03:52who has an eclectic style.
0:03:52 > 0:03:54I'd definitely say my style is vintage,
0:03:54 > 0:03:56because anything that's old now is vintage.
0:03:56 > 0:03:59And I would definitely say there's an element of rock and roll
0:03:59 > 0:04:03because I like pops of colour, clashing prints.
0:04:10 > 0:04:14Although all the designers have had their briefs for just over a week,
0:04:14 > 0:04:18this will be the first time they'll be seeing the rooms in person.
0:04:18 > 0:04:20Wow.
0:04:20 > 0:04:23Katie's task is to make over this bland bedroom
0:04:23 > 0:04:25for homeowners Guy and Jane.
0:04:25 > 0:04:29I originally said sort of Versailles or Provencal-type theme.
0:04:29 > 0:04:31It's a really nice room, it's really bright.
0:04:31 > 0:04:34It's brighter than I thought it would be, so it's really nice.
0:04:34 > 0:04:37I can't imagine it being a nightmare vision,
0:04:37 > 0:04:42but anything too gaudy, anything too...gold or too much.
0:04:42 > 0:04:46So slightly ornate but calm, not too ditsy.
0:04:46 > 0:04:50Now I've seen the room and it's actually come alive in my mind,
0:04:50 > 0:04:52other than just looking at a picture,
0:04:52 > 0:04:54I'm super-excited to get going.
0:04:56 > 0:04:59Judging how well she puts forward her designs
0:04:59 > 0:05:01and adapts to her clients' needs
0:05:01 > 0:05:04are interior architect Dan Hopwood and Kelly Hoppen,
0:05:04 > 0:05:06renowned for her neutral palettes.
0:05:07 > 0:05:10Thank you for letting me come into your house and do your room.
0:05:10 > 0:05:11It's a pleasure to meet you.
0:05:11 > 0:05:15This is the plan I have for your room.
0:05:15 > 0:05:17- Wow!- I know you said in your brief
0:05:17 > 0:05:20that your wardrobe doors were a little bit rickety?
0:05:20 > 0:05:22The whole wardrobe's rickety!
0:05:22 > 0:05:26So your doors, I'm actually going to make one big door.
0:05:26 > 0:05:28- Cos I know you said you quite like the French sort of feel.- Yes.
0:05:28 > 0:05:30I'm going to challenge you a little bit,
0:05:30 > 0:05:32cos I know you said you didn't want dark colours,
0:05:32 > 0:05:35but I've actually gone for this slightly darker grey on this wall.
0:05:35 > 0:05:38But you won't see that much of it because I'm actually going to do
0:05:38 > 0:05:40some gold-painted stripes on the wall.
0:05:40 > 0:05:43- You see a lot of stripes in the Regency decor.- Yes.
0:05:43 > 0:05:45I actually want to paint this ceiling
0:05:45 > 0:05:49this very light peach colour to just make it feel a bit warmer.
0:05:49 > 0:05:53The only colour I'm a little bit...apprehensive about
0:05:53 > 0:05:54is that colour, really.
0:05:56 > 0:05:57Erm...
0:05:58 > 0:06:01Are you willing to let me try a little bit for you?
0:06:02 > 0:06:05- Yeah. No, try it. - OK, thank you for that.
0:06:06 > 0:06:09A really elegant presentation by Katie.
0:06:09 > 0:06:14The brief was complex insomuch that we had Versailles and the Riviera.
0:06:14 > 0:06:16There was a lot going on on that board,
0:06:16 > 0:06:19but for me, the thing that stood out that I just can't bear,
0:06:19 > 0:06:22and the client didn't like, was this peach colour.
0:06:22 > 0:06:23I couldn't see where that went.
0:06:23 > 0:06:25Peach was big in the '80s,
0:06:25 > 0:06:27and I'm really not sure that we're ready for it to come back yet.
0:06:27 > 0:06:29I'm certainly not!
0:06:31 > 0:06:34I think, Steve, if you want to get started on the paintwork?
0:06:34 > 0:06:37Katie's 48 hours have begun.
0:06:37 > 0:06:40She's ready to recreate a French revolution in this Regency room.
0:06:41 > 0:06:43She jumps straight in,
0:06:43 > 0:06:47outlining her brief to create the single armoire doors.
0:06:47 > 0:06:50- I wanted to make one big door. - Ah, just one big one?
0:06:50 > 0:06:52Yeah. Sorry.
0:06:52 > 0:06:54But now, looking at it, I'm worried it's going to be a bit heavy.
0:06:54 > 0:06:56And also, I mean, if you had just one,
0:06:56 > 0:06:59it's going to be double the width of that.
0:06:59 > 0:07:01- So you're going to have a massive, like huge...- Crazy. Yeah.
0:07:01 > 0:07:03It's not going to work with a big door, is it?
0:07:03 > 0:07:06They're so much bigger than I anticipated.
0:07:06 > 0:07:08- Let's do a split.- OK.
0:07:08 > 0:07:10This means she's unable to give the homeowner
0:07:10 > 0:07:12the French-style wardrobes she promised.
0:07:16 > 0:07:18Our next designer is 30-year-old photographer
0:07:18 > 0:07:22and self-confessed perfectionist, Daniela.
0:07:22 > 0:07:25My style is, you know, modern, luxe.
0:07:25 > 0:07:27Laid-back, but, you know, kind of quite...
0:07:27 > 0:07:29I would like to think quite chic.
0:07:29 > 0:07:33I like to add a bit of a twist, whether it be a little bit humorous,
0:07:33 > 0:07:36or make you think about something, or shock you.
0:07:36 > 0:07:40Yeah, it just gives you a certain feeling inside, and I like that.
0:07:45 > 0:07:48Daniela's brief is to remodel a young girl's bedroom
0:07:48 > 0:07:52for our homeowners' 12-year-old daughter, Pippa.
0:07:52 > 0:07:54I don't want it to be too girlie.
0:07:54 > 0:07:56It should be timeless and modern
0:07:56 > 0:08:00because I don't want to have to redo it again next year.
0:08:01 > 0:08:03Wow.
0:08:03 > 0:08:05Oh, it's much bigger than I thought.
0:08:05 > 0:08:07I definitely want it to be trendy and cool,
0:08:07 > 0:08:10but I don't want it to be, like, over-the-top funky.
0:08:11 > 0:08:14I think she's got a really cute little style, anyway,
0:08:14 > 0:08:16so hopefully she'll like what I do.
0:08:17 > 0:08:21Pippa and mum Karina are keen to see what Daniela has in mind.
0:08:21 > 0:08:26So I went to start from the point of the building itself.
0:08:26 > 0:08:29So it's Regency Tropicana, basically.
0:08:29 > 0:08:33I noticed all the little cacti dotted around and things,
0:08:33 > 0:08:36and your lovely little postcards, it all looked very tropical.
0:08:36 > 0:08:38So I was like, hmm, she clearly wants to be on holiday
0:08:38 > 0:08:40a lot of the time!
0:08:40 > 0:08:43So I thought I'd bring some Tropicana to you.
0:08:45 > 0:08:48So I looked at kind of cactuses and things like that,
0:08:48 > 0:08:52and then also Palm Springs, that led me to Palm Springs.
0:08:52 > 0:08:55Do you know whereabouts that is?
0:08:55 > 0:08:58- Kind of.- Yes, in America, basically, and it's a beautiful place.
0:08:58 > 0:09:01You said that you liked blues and things like that,
0:09:01 > 0:09:03so basically, it's going to be a complete mix
0:09:03 > 0:09:05of all the blues in the world.
0:09:05 > 0:09:08But then pops of nice little pinks and oranges and yellows,
0:09:08 > 0:09:10so very colourful.
0:09:10 > 0:09:12What a great presentation!
0:09:12 > 0:09:14And I mean, it's so out there.
0:09:14 > 0:09:17And it's so LA and it's so Palm Springs.
0:09:17 > 0:09:19But she's 12 years old, the homeowner.
0:09:19 > 0:09:21Yeah. It's very, very sophisticated,
0:09:21 > 0:09:23and as a result, we got excited.
0:09:23 > 0:09:26but how is that going to translate into that room?
0:09:26 > 0:09:29Being a mother myself, I know that when a child wants to change a room
0:09:29 > 0:09:32from being a child to a teenager,
0:09:32 > 0:09:34you think how long is that going to last
0:09:34 > 0:09:35before they want something else?
0:09:35 > 0:09:39I was so nervous, but, yeah, they really liked it.
0:09:39 > 0:09:41I'm pretty confident going into the first day.
0:09:41 > 0:09:43I mean, who knows?
0:09:43 > 0:09:45But, yeah, I think I'm pretty sorted.
0:09:45 > 0:09:47Daniela's 48 hours have begun.
0:09:47 > 0:09:51So she gets to work creating her Tropicana Regency bedroom.
0:09:51 > 0:09:54And she's got a long list of jobs that need to be done.
0:09:54 > 0:09:57- What's the plan of action today? - Panelling everywhere.
0:09:57 > 0:10:01- Panelling, what, the whole room? - Yeah. Yeah.
0:10:01 > 0:10:03The cupboard is going to get taken right up to the ceiling.
0:10:03 > 0:10:07- Just...- Right. - And then, basically, the same here.
0:10:07 > 0:10:10And then radiator cover as well.
0:10:10 > 0:10:14Then I need just the MDF cut to size for the headboard.
0:10:14 > 0:10:16- Just a panel, or do you need...? - Just a panel, yeah.
0:10:16 > 0:10:19That should be, hopefully, quite simple.
0:10:19 > 0:10:21There's an awful lot of "quite simple" going on!
0:10:21 > 0:10:24THEY LAUGH
0:10:24 > 0:10:28Our final designer is 49-year-old hairdresser Oliver
0:10:28 > 0:10:31who has a deep rooted dislike of all things minimal.
0:10:31 > 0:10:34When people ask me to describe my style, it is a mashup.
0:10:34 > 0:10:37Cos there's bits of everything that I like.
0:10:37 > 0:10:38So there's a little bit of grandeur,
0:10:38 > 0:10:42a little bit of sort of, you know, old world charm,
0:10:42 > 0:10:43a bit of retro.
0:10:46 > 0:10:49Oliver will have to muster all his creative charm
0:10:49 > 0:10:53to make over this forgotten basement room for home owners Kim and Joe.
0:10:53 > 0:10:57Most of the house we've done up in very pale colours,
0:10:57 > 0:11:00and I think what we want for the guest bedroom
0:11:00 > 0:11:03is perhaps a little bit more like the exterior,
0:11:03 > 0:11:05the countryside coming into the house.
0:11:08 > 0:11:10OK, the basement.
0:11:10 > 0:11:17I wouldn't want to find it was very chintzy or very florally.
0:11:17 > 0:11:18OK.
0:11:18 > 0:11:22I think that would be quite disturbing, really.
0:11:22 > 0:11:24But will the homeowners be happy
0:11:24 > 0:11:26with Oliver's interpretation of their brief?
0:11:27 > 0:11:31- Time for the big reveal.- OK. - Are you ready?- Yes.- OK.
0:11:31 > 0:11:35So we've come up with something like this.
0:11:35 > 0:11:40Wow! I like this panelling. That's a good idea.
0:11:40 > 0:11:43The reason I did this was because of the history of the building.
0:11:43 > 0:11:44OK.
0:11:44 > 0:11:47I'll be honest, the one thing I'm not very keen on in houses
0:11:47 > 0:11:50is plants indoors.
0:11:50 > 0:11:52OK. Are you happy with just one?
0:11:52 > 0:11:54Would you be swayed with one?
0:11:54 > 0:11:56I don't know.
0:11:56 > 0:11:59Can you explain the light fitting?
0:11:59 > 0:12:01This is a light fitting I'm going to be making for you,
0:12:01 > 0:12:03and it's actually made out of hula hoops.
0:12:03 > 0:12:06OK. Sounds good.
0:12:06 > 0:12:08You just have to bear with me on that one,
0:12:08 > 0:12:10but it's going to look really amazing, I promise!
0:12:12 > 0:12:15- So you've put the bed between the windows?- Yes. Yes.
0:12:15 > 0:12:17Cos I think it frames it really well
0:12:17 > 0:12:19cos this headboard is pretty spectacular
0:12:19 > 0:12:21when it's going to be upholstered in this fabric.
0:12:21 > 0:12:24You need that kind of focal point, I think, you know,
0:12:24 > 0:12:26to kind of draw your eye in.
0:12:26 > 0:12:28I guess that's a little bit of me in there, really.
0:12:28 > 0:12:32- OLIVER LAUGHS - A little bit of fancy.
0:12:32 > 0:12:34Only time will tell if the chintzy headboard
0:12:34 > 0:12:37will be a step too far for our homeowners.
0:12:37 > 0:12:40I was really impressed by Oliver's confidence
0:12:40 > 0:12:41in presenting that scheme,
0:12:41 > 0:12:44and also, the drawings helped him very well as well.
0:12:44 > 0:12:46But those fabrics,
0:12:46 > 0:12:48the way he glued them on the board were a little bit slapdash.
0:12:48 > 0:12:50I thought he was winging it a little bit.
0:12:50 > 0:12:51I love his style,
0:12:51 > 0:12:55I just cannot see how that fabric's going to work,
0:12:55 > 0:13:01and he's literally taken that thought of taking the garden inside
0:13:01 > 0:13:03by thinking that you'll have birds and all of that topiary
0:13:03 > 0:13:06onto that fabric, and I personally don't like it.
0:13:06 > 0:13:09So that's my only concern with the design.
0:13:13 > 0:13:16Oliver's 48 hours have begun.
0:13:16 > 0:13:18But he's off to a slow start.
0:13:18 > 0:13:20I'm just actually waiting on paint.
0:13:20 > 0:13:23I...I didn't actually order the paint
0:13:23 > 0:13:27until after the homeowners had actually seen it on the mood board.
0:13:29 > 0:13:30Now it's a little bit of a hold-up
0:13:30 > 0:13:33because I've now got to send somebody else off
0:13:33 > 0:13:36to get the paint that they really like,
0:13:36 > 0:13:39here, so we can actually start putting it up on the walls.
0:13:39 > 0:13:41At home in North London, when it comes to paint colour,
0:13:41 > 0:13:44Oliver has quite strong views.
0:13:44 > 0:13:46I was actually going to get some T-shirts made
0:13:46 > 0:13:48and it was going to say, "Ban the beige".
0:13:48 > 0:13:51Cos I just think people rely on neutrals too much.
0:13:51 > 0:13:53It's safe, it's easy.
0:13:53 > 0:13:55I can't stand minimalism.
0:13:56 > 0:13:58I'm what they call a maximalist.
0:13:58 > 0:14:01You know, it's like more is more, and it's better.
0:14:01 > 0:14:03HE LAUGHS
0:14:07 > 0:14:12The doors have been papered with woodchip paper in the panels,
0:14:12 > 0:14:14which is an absolute nightmare to get off.
0:14:14 > 0:14:16Can I have a look?
0:14:16 > 0:14:19It's really... It's been on there years.
0:14:22 > 0:14:25Unless you're a professional!
0:14:25 > 0:14:27You just need a bit of muscle power.
0:14:28 > 0:14:30A bit of elbow grease seems to do the trick.
0:14:36 > 0:14:40Over at Katie's, she's concentrating on adding a focal point to the room.
0:14:40 > 0:14:44There's nothing more romantic than a fireplace in your bedroom.
0:14:44 > 0:14:48So I'm going to paint them up here, give them a couple of coats.
0:14:48 > 0:14:51I do think the key with Katie's scheme
0:14:51 > 0:14:54is that she uses the right materials and the best materials.
0:14:54 > 0:14:58And that's where my concerns start to rise because she's painting gold
0:14:58 > 0:15:01on some of the details, and that is just going to look so cheap.
0:15:01 > 0:15:03And it wouldn't have been that difficult
0:15:03 > 0:15:05to use the real McCoy, such as Dutch Gold.
0:15:05 > 0:15:06I know, but look at the budget.
0:15:08 > 0:15:12At Daniela's, everyone is busy working through her list.
0:15:14 > 0:15:17At her home in Epping, she likes everything in its place.
0:15:18 > 0:15:22I kind of like to keep the walls plain and pure and white
0:15:22 > 0:15:25so then I can add accessories and take them away when I want.
0:15:25 > 0:15:28I try new ideas, yeah, try things out
0:15:28 > 0:15:30and then they don't work, and then I try something new.
0:15:30 > 0:15:32So it's ever-evolving, which I love.
0:15:36 > 0:15:38So, first of all,
0:15:38 > 0:15:41- I did actually want to do the wallpaper on the ceiling.- OK.
0:15:41 > 0:15:43But despite being ultra-organised,
0:15:43 > 0:15:46Daniela's calculations may be slightly out.
0:15:46 > 0:15:48Can I ask you how many rolls you've got as well?
0:15:48 > 0:15:51- I think we've got four rolls. - Four rolls?
0:15:51 > 0:15:55I did it automated on the internet.
0:15:55 > 0:15:57- Right, OK, great!- Oh, no! - THEY LAUGH
0:15:57 > 0:16:01She may have enough paper, but will the pattern match?
0:16:01 > 0:16:03If you've measured for the whole ceiling,
0:16:03 > 0:16:05being, you know, that space,
0:16:05 > 0:16:08and you've not accounted for the repeat as well,
0:16:08 > 0:16:12it might be that we might be short.
0:16:12 > 0:16:14- Oh!- Yeah, yeah.
0:16:20 > 0:16:24At first glance, all these Regency terraces look all uniform.
0:16:24 > 0:16:27But a closer inspection reveals inconsistencies,
0:16:27 > 0:16:28a jagged roofline
0:16:28 > 0:16:31or one porch doesn't match the neighbouring porch.
0:16:31 > 0:16:33And that's because, even within one terrace,
0:16:33 > 0:16:36different houses were built by different developers and builders
0:16:36 > 0:16:37at different times.
0:16:38 > 0:16:40But certain elements were standard.
0:16:42 > 0:16:45The exterior walls tended to be plain.
0:16:45 > 0:16:47Regency houses were usually built out of brick,
0:16:47 > 0:16:50but coated in stucco, a kind of plaster,
0:16:50 > 0:16:53often incised with lines to give the impression that
0:16:53 > 0:16:56the houses were built with more expensive stone.
0:16:59 > 0:17:02And echoing this architectural deception,
0:17:02 > 0:17:05Katie intends to create a grand illusion of her own.
0:17:05 > 0:17:08These are the bedside lamps.
0:17:08 > 0:17:11My main concern was that they're very modern,
0:17:11 > 0:17:12and obviously, they're metal,
0:17:12 > 0:17:15and the room's supposed to be sort of French vintage.
0:17:15 > 0:17:19So I'm going to paint them,
0:17:19 > 0:17:23hopefully putting a sort of a verdigris patina on them.
0:17:24 > 0:17:27Katie mixes plaster of Paris, water and paint
0:17:27 > 0:17:30to mimic the look of aged copper or bronze.
0:17:32 > 0:17:34- I've got one door.- Oh, fabulous!
0:17:34 > 0:17:36Nearly at the end of day one.
0:17:36 > 0:17:39The ceiling's been painted, which was something.
0:17:39 > 0:17:42The coving's been painted as well.
0:17:42 > 0:17:45The doors are made for the wardrobe, they're just making sure they fit.
0:17:45 > 0:17:48A couple of my bigger jobs are getting done.
0:17:48 > 0:17:51So, yeah, I think we've done good, we've made good time.
0:17:51 > 0:17:53With most of the painting finished for Katie,
0:17:53 > 0:17:56over at Oliver's, he's still waiting for his paint.
0:17:58 > 0:18:00I think we've got about half an hour left now
0:18:00 > 0:18:02until we've got to down tools.
0:18:02 > 0:18:04So if you just crack on with that.
0:18:04 > 0:18:07The things that I've progressed really well on are the wallpaper,
0:18:07 > 0:18:11the panelling on the walls, and the headboard as well.
0:18:11 > 0:18:13So, good progress so far.
0:18:13 > 0:18:17Though with no sign of his paint, progress is slower for Oliver.
0:18:18 > 0:18:20I'm going to stay positive.
0:18:20 > 0:18:22You know, it can be done, it can be done tomorrow.
0:18:22 > 0:18:24Well, it will be done tomorrow.
0:18:24 > 0:18:26I'm not going to allow it to sort of, you know...
0:18:26 > 0:18:29It's a hiccup, it's not a setback.
0:18:32 > 0:18:34With day one under their belts,
0:18:34 > 0:18:37our three amateur designers take a moment to exchange notes.
0:18:37 > 0:18:39Did you get much done?
0:18:39 > 0:18:41Not as much as I'd like to have done, to be honest.
0:18:41 > 0:18:44But I'm not going to freak out about it tonight.
0:18:44 > 0:18:45A few things have happened really fast
0:18:45 > 0:18:47that've made such a big difference for me.
0:18:47 > 0:18:50It's, like, just reassured me that little bit more, like, "Oh, yes."
0:18:50 > 0:18:52I mean, it could all go wrong tomorrow,
0:18:52 > 0:18:54I'm not saying it's going well, but, you know.
0:18:54 > 0:18:56- No...- Yeah!
0:19:03 > 0:19:05It's the start of day two in Pittville,
0:19:05 > 0:19:07and there's a long way to go
0:19:07 > 0:19:10before two of our designers earn their place in the next round.
0:19:11 > 0:19:13And the pressure is on,
0:19:13 > 0:19:15as our judges will be paying them each a visit.
0:19:17 > 0:19:19Daniela's unsure whether she has enough wallpaper.
0:19:19 > 0:19:21- Morning, Stuart.- Morning.
0:19:21 > 0:19:23Katie can only hope that the homeowners...
0:19:23 > 0:19:25Morning!
0:19:25 > 0:19:27..will like her new-style wardrobe doors.
0:19:27 > 0:19:30And Oliver's still waiting for his paint to arrive.
0:19:31 > 0:19:33Day two, and I'm actually raring to go.
0:19:33 > 0:19:35I was beset with problems yesterday,
0:19:35 > 0:19:37you know, there was unforeseen things that happened.
0:19:37 > 0:19:39I'm not going to harp on about it, you know,
0:19:39 > 0:19:41it's like kind of just move on from it now.
0:19:41 > 0:19:43You know, there's so much to do today.
0:19:44 > 0:19:47- Floor paint! - HE CHUCKLES
0:19:47 > 0:19:48At last!
0:19:48 > 0:19:51With the arrival of the paint, finally he has everything he needs.
0:19:53 > 0:19:56Over at Katie's, she's taking stock of the situation.
0:19:56 > 0:19:58What're we up to?
0:19:58 > 0:20:01I'm just cutting these cupboard doors that you asked for.
0:20:01 > 0:20:04- Brilliant.- I should have them up in, I don't know, the next sort of hour.
0:20:04 > 0:20:07- Thank you. - No worries, you're welcome.
0:20:07 > 0:20:10Got a good plan in my mind for today.
0:20:10 > 0:20:12Got some key things I want to crack on with.
0:20:12 > 0:20:14Definitely getting the headboard done,
0:20:14 > 0:20:17a massive job for me today is painting the bed.
0:20:17 > 0:20:19But the painter's really, really got ahead of himself
0:20:19 > 0:20:21so that's looking really, really good,
0:20:21 > 0:20:24so, hopefully, we can start focusing on some detail later on in the day.
0:20:24 > 0:20:29But, first, Katie gets straight down to sanding the bed ready to paint.
0:20:31 > 0:20:35So, plan for today - architrave, finish that.
0:20:35 > 0:20:36Mm-hmm.
0:20:36 > 0:20:40Um... Fireplace. Then...wardrobes.
0:20:40 > 0:20:44- That's me for the day, I think, Wardrobes.- Yeah, definitely.
0:20:44 > 0:20:47- Morning, Jo.- Morning. - What's the situation with the paper?
0:20:47 > 0:20:51- How short are we? Are we short? - Well, we are very tight.
0:20:51 > 0:20:54What we'll do is keep the...
0:20:54 > 0:20:56Any splicing in of pieces,
0:20:56 > 0:21:01keep them to above the head as you walk in so they're out of sight.
0:21:01 > 0:21:03- Hopefully, we'll be fine.- We will.
0:21:03 > 0:21:05- Don't panic - we'll be fine. - Yeah, no, don't panic.
0:21:09 > 0:21:12At Oliver's, despite the homeowners' reservations,
0:21:12 > 0:21:15he's adding a touch of gold to his hula hoop lamp.
0:21:17 > 0:21:22So, this is just five, simple regular children's hula hoops
0:21:22 > 0:21:26which have all been drilled into the same place on each one.
0:21:26 > 0:21:29And then you thread your threaded bolt through.
0:21:29 > 0:21:32Five, I found, is the maximum you can have,
0:21:32 > 0:21:34unless you go much, much larger.
0:21:38 > 0:21:41I'm spraying it my favourite colour, which is gold.
0:21:41 > 0:21:43This doesn't actually fit in...
0:21:43 > 0:21:45Purposely doesn't fit into the idea of nature,
0:21:45 > 0:21:47and nature being in the brief.
0:21:48 > 0:21:51You know, it just throws something else in there
0:21:51 > 0:21:53that isn't kind of part of the brief.
0:21:54 > 0:21:56You know, kind of makes things a little more exciting.
0:22:00 > 0:22:03And that's what you end up with five children's hula hoops
0:22:03 > 0:22:05and some gold spray.
0:22:08 > 0:22:11This morning's gone really well. It's so much better than yesterday.
0:22:11 > 0:22:13I'm actually getting things done today,
0:22:13 > 0:22:16I feel like were moving forward.
0:22:16 > 0:22:19Over at Daniela's, things are organised,
0:22:19 > 0:22:21and they're working through her list.
0:22:21 > 0:22:23But there's still a lot to do.
0:22:24 > 0:22:26I'm really nervous about seeing the judges today -
0:22:26 > 0:22:27I'm not going to lie.
0:22:27 > 0:22:29I'm in love with this design, so if they don't like it,
0:22:29 > 0:22:33that's going to, like, break my heart a little bit.
0:22:33 > 0:22:36I've just taken the arm off of this sofa here,
0:22:36 > 0:22:39and turned it into a chaise, basically.
0:22:41 > 0:22:43Actually, now I'm looking at it
0:22:43 > 0:22:45turned up the other way with one arm off,
0:22:45 > 0:22:48I actually really love the silhouette.
0:22:50 > 0:22:52With all her hopes pinned on the judges
0:22:52 > 0:22:54liking her Tropicana Regency design,
0:22:54 > 0:22:57Dan and Kelly arrive to take their first look.
0:22:57 > 0:22:59- I love the wallpaper. - I'm really pleased with it so far.
0:22:59 > 0:23:01So, you've got plenty of wallpaper?
0:23:01 > 0:23:03I wouldn't say plenty, but we've got enough.
0:23:03 > 0:23:06I mean, it'd be a drama if you missed a bit, you know.
0:23:06 > 0:23:07I know, imagine! I know, I know.
0:23:07 > 0:23:09The million-dollar question that I always ask -
0:23:09 > 0:23:12what keeps you awake at night on this?
0:23:12 > 0:23:14I think that I've been worrying about the wardrobes.
0:23:14 > 0:23:16I really want to get that done.
0:23:16 > 0:23:19It will get done, but, you know, I'm just cutting corners
0:23:19 > 0:23:22with the standard, perhaps, which is a shame...
0:23:22 > 0:23:24Don't tell us that! You've got a lot to do.
0:23:24 > 0:23:26You've put a lot on that board.
0:23:26 > 0:23:28And this entire project depends on
0:23:28 > 0:23:31- absolutely everything you've got in it.- Yes.
0:23:31 > 0:23:34Daniela. She's got great style,
0:23:34 > 0:23:36and she seems to be on top of the project as well.
0:23:36 > 0:23:38I'm looking at it, thinking, "Where's it going to go wrong?"
0:23:38 > 0:23:40Because she's confident, she's delegating,
0:23:40 > 0:23:44she's got lists upon lists, she's ticking off, she's signing off.
0:23:44 > 0:23:46We couldn't fluster her at all, could we?
0:23:46 > 0:23:48You know, if there's anything missing,
0:23:48 > 0:23:51- it's going to be massively disappointing.- Oh, I know.
0:23:51 > 0:23:55Dan really put the pressure on that, you know, the timings were short,
0:23:55 > 0:23:57and I've got a lot to do.
0:23:57 > 0:23:59But, then, Dan hasn't seen my list,
0:23:59 > 0:24:01he doesn't know what I'm ticking off,
0:24:01 > 0:24:02he doesn't know what I'm achieving,
0:24:02 > 0:24:05so, I think, you know, I'm not going to let it faze me.
0:24:05 > 0:24:07I think they were trying to scare me a little bit,
0:24:07 > 0:24:09but I'm not going to let them.
0:24:12 > 0:24:14Meanwhile, Katie's going for gold,
0:24:14 > 0:24:17as she draws on the opulence of Versailles for her room.
0:24:19 > 0:24:21That's got potential, that gold, hasn't it?
0:24:21 > 0:24:22Beautiful, isn't it?
0:24:25 > 0:24:29I was coming to ask, Katie, about the headboard.
0:24:29 > 0:24:31I've sketched something out on the MDF.
0:24:31 > 0:24:34- Do you want me to look?- Yeah. I'm not going to cut it until...
0:24:34 > 0:24:36All right, yeah, I'm coming.
0:24:36 > 0:24:38Her build is organised.
0:24:38 > 0:24:41But, at home in Maldon, things tend to...evolve.
0:24:41 > 0:24:45I don't tend to do a lot of research because I like things to grow.
0:24:45 > 0:24:46But I'll always start with one piece
0:24:46 > 0:24:48that I know I definitely want in the room.
0:24:48 > 0:24:51So, like, my living room started from one picture that
0:24:51 > 0:24:53my nan bought me as a moving-in present.
0:24:53 > 0:24:57It's Monarch Of The Glen, and that's how I came up with the wall colours.
0:24:57 > 0:25:00Because it's quite dark and moody, with the gold frame,
0:25:00 > 0:25:02so that's why there's a lot of blue and gold in this room.
0:25:05 > 0:25:08Oh, wow! How long do you reckon we're looking?
0:25:08 > 0:25:10We're coming up to lunchtime now,
0:25:10 > 0:25:12so I'm getting a little concerned about time.
0:25:12 > 0:25:14Yeah, I'll probably have this done in...don't know, 45 minutes?
0:25:14 > 0:25:17- Ooh, I'm going to hold you to it! - OK.- OK.
0:25:17 > 0:25:20All the additional joinery is beginning to put pressure
0:25:20 > 0:25:22on Katie's schedule.
0:25:25 > 0:25:27When it comes to headboards, for Oliver...
0:25:27 > 0:25:29Very, very tricky for you, this.
0:25:29 > 0:25:31..things appear more relaxed.
0:25:34 > 0:25:36Look at that. See?
0:25:38 > 0:25:40Thank you, and goodnight.
0:25:42 > 0:25:43Yeah, that's cosy.
0:25:46 > 0:25:48Over at Katie's, the judges are on their way
0:25:48 > 0:25:50to see just how she's pulling
0:25:50 > 0:25:53the Versailles Riviera and Provence brief together.
0:25:53 > 0:25:56Hi, Katie. My heart goes out to you.
0:25:56 > 0:26:00Your brief was really difficult for any designer - amateur or not.
0:26:00 > 0:26:03My worry from the start was peach.
0:26:03 > 0:26:05- Why peach?- Why not peach?
0:26:05 > 0:26:08It hasn't been around since the '70s, so let's bring it back.
0:26:08 > 0:26:10- There's a reason for that! - Well...!- Yeah.
0:26:10 > 0:26:11I wanted to paint the ceiling
0:26:11 > 0:26:15because a lot of the Regency homes would have had a painted ceiling.
0:26:15 > 0:26:20It's just...you know, the grey and the sort of verdigris green,
0:26:20 > 0:26:22all of that worked really well.
0:26:22 > 0:26:25I love the fact you've painted the bed in this beautiful grey.
0:26:25 > 0:26:28And I've walked in and seen the stripe on the wall,
0:26:28 > 0:26:30and I am in a bit of a panic about that.
0:26:30 > 0:26:32Don't be panicked. It'll be fine.
0:26:32 > 0:26:35- Don't panic! Nobody panic! - DANIEL LAUGHS
0:26:35 > 0:26:39- There's a fireplace going here. - OK.- So that's going to break it up.
0:26:39 > 0:26:41And I've got some artwork to go on there.
0:26:41 > 0:26:43'Katie is so charming.'
0:26:43 > 0:26:45She's so bubbly, she's so happy,
0:26:45 > 0:26:47she's so confident with what she's doing.
0:26:47 > 0:26:49But she wants to please too much as well.
0:26:49 > 0:26:55The homeowner has asked for Provencale, Riviera, Versailles,
0:26:55 > 0:26:58but she's just got one room to deal with, and you do have to edit.
0:26:58 > 0:27:00I think she's going to create something fantastic
0:27:00 > 0:27:04that the client wants, but is it going to look right,
0:27:04 > 0:27:05and is it going to be too much?
0:27:05 > 0:27:08You know, the proof is going to be in the pudding when it's done.
0:27:10 > 0:27:13The judges seeing my room for the first time was...
0:27:14 > 0:27:16..quite daunting.
0:27:16 > 0:27:19I know Kelly Hoppen said that peach should've maybe stayed in the '70s,
0:27:19 > 0:27:21but I think that's what I wanted to do -
0:27:21 > 0:27:23find the most out-of-fashion colour
0:27:23 > 0:27:27and try and use it in a modern home, in a modern room,
0:27:27 > 0:27:29and then maybe we'll make it come around again.
0:27:33 > 0:27:35Back at Oliver's, the paint may have arrived,
0:27:35 > 0:27:39but he needs to get it on and dry in time to avoid any more delay.
0:27:40 > 0:27:44So, we're going to get down the first coat of the floor paint.
0:27:45 > 0:27:48This is just... We will need two coats.
0:27:48 > 0:27:51But it's just the first one, almost like a prime.
0:27:54 > 0:27:57And Oliver's wasting no time getting the paint job done.
0:28:01 > 0:28:02OK.
0:28:05 > 0:28:06CAMERA SHUTTER CLICKS
0:28:08 > 0:28:12Photographer Daniela wants to make a portrait of Pippa for her bedroom.
0:28:12 > 0:28:14Gorgeous!
0:28:14 > 0:28:18Upstairs, the final piece of wallpaper slots into place.
0:28:21 > 0:28:23Wow, finally.
0:28:23 > 0:28:25- It's done!- Tell me about it.
0:28:25 > 0:28:27- Are you relieved? - Yeah, I am relieved.
0:28:27 > 0:28:30It looks...fabulous.
0:28:34 > 0:28:35In Regency homes,
0:28:35 > 0:28:39drawing rooms for entertaining were generally on the first floor.
0:28:39 > 0:28:43Gigantic windows not only flooded the rooms with light
0:28:43 > 0:28:46but also gave a chance to show off your fashionable interior decoration
0:28:46 > 0:28:47for the world outside.
0:28:47 > 0:28:50They also gave great views of the parks and gardens.
0:28:50 > 0:28:54Letting the outside inside seems like a very contemporary concern,
0:28:54 > 0:28:56but the Regency home did it first.
0:29:00 > 0:29:05And someone bringing the outside in now to transform his dreary basement
0:29:05 > 0:29:06is Oliver.
0:29:08 > 0:29:10Painting is relaxing, you know?
0:29:10 > 0:29:13It helps you zone out a little bit, I think.
0:29:13 > 0:29:15- It does me, anyway. - HE LAUGHS
0:29:17 > 0:29:20- Hi, Oliver.- Hello.
0:29:20 > 0:29:21You seem really laid-back,
0:29:21 > 0:29:24and there doesn't seem to be a huge amount that's being done down there,
0:29:24 > 0:29:26and the clock is ticking.
0:29:26 > 0:29:28And there's a floor that's being painted.
0:29:28 > 0:29:31- Is that holding you back?- That's just dry, that's just dry now.
0:29:31 > 0:29:33So you're watching paint dry, literally?
0:29:33 > 0:29:35No, I haven't got time to watch paint dry!
0:29:35 > 0:29:36That's had its first coat.
0:29:36 > 0:29:38At end of day, it'll have its second coat,
0:29:38 > 0:29:40which should just level it all out completely.
0:29:40 > 0:29:42Does that mean you've got a plan?
0:29:42 > 0:29:43Does it mean you've got a tick-off list
0:29:43 > 0:29:45of the things you need to get done and achieve?
0:29:45 > 0:29:47It's a bit more of an organic plan than that.
0:29:47 > 0:29:50- That's what I thought. - I don't do things to order.
0:29:50 > 0:29:54Like at 9am, I've got to do this, at 10am, it's got to be finished.
0:29:54 > 0:29:56- You know, I think that's... - BIG mistake.
0:29:56 > 0:29:58- Really?- Yeah.- OK...
0:29:58 > 0:30:01I quite like the idea of it, but I'll tell you what,
0:30:01 > 0:30:04by that time tomorrow, if it's not finished, you're in trouble.
0:30:04 > 0:30:05I know! It's curtains!
0:30:05 > 0:30:08- Do it anyway you want, but it has to be done.- It has to be done.
0:30:08 > 0:30:12I do think that Oliver has got a difficult task ahead.
0:30:12 > 0:30:15I think that his imagination is good.
0:30:15 > 0:30:17I guess my worry is,
0:30:17 > 0:30:20having now met him and seen the progress of the project,
0:30:20 > 0:30:22is that the way his mind works in terms of design?
0:30:22 > 0:30:25He has a great idea, and then it's just very...
0:30:25 > 0:30:27"I'll do this now, I'll do it later."
0:30:27 > 0:30:31Well, he has been nonchalant, the way that he's running this project.
0:30:31 > 0:30:34But that sort of nonchalance could give us that je ne sais quoi
0:30:34 > 0:30:38- that you need in great interior design.- That sort of freedom?- Yeah.
0:30:38 > 0:30:39I'm just going to keep coasting along.
0:30:39 > 0:30:42It's working fine so far, so...
0:30:42 > 0:30:46Yeah. I'm not going to start getting rattled.
0:30:47 > 0:30:50As the rooms are all slightly different,
0:30:50 > 0:30:52the judges are keen for the designers to demonstrate
0:30:52 > 0:30:55their creativity on a level playing field.
0:30:57 > 0:31:02So the competitors are about to be given an identical surprise item
0:31:02 > 0:31:04to artistically incorporate into their scheme.
0:31:06 > 0:31:09- Katie.- Hello. - I've got a little surprise for you.
0:31:09 > 0:31:12This is your creative challenge.
0:31:12 > 0:31:15- Hmm... - That is quite a lot to deal with.
0:31:15 > 0:31:18- And that's anything, anything you can do?- Creative challenge.
0:31:18 > 0:31:21And, also, just to make it more spicy, you've got three hours.
0:31:21 > 0:31:23Three hours? Wow, OK.
0:31:23 > 0:31:27- And do everything else that you're doing.- Of course, fine. Easy.
0:31:27 > 0:31:28Don't get hung up on it, though!
0:31:32 > 0:31:34Wow.
0:31:40 > 0:31:41Nice surprise.
0:31:41 > 0:31:44I mean...I don't know whether to laugh or cry with these.
0:31:46 > 0:31:49But, unperturbed, Katie gets straight down to business.
0:31:49 > 0:31:51For the challenge,
0:31:51 > 0:31:56I asked Johnny to try and square them off a little bit,
0:31:56 > 0:31:58so we can try and make them into a big frame,
0:31:58 > 0:32:01because we're using this sort of shape in the room
0:32:01 > 0:32:03for the back of the bed and on the wardrobe,
0:32:03 > 0:32:06so I'm going to try to mirror it in a frame for some artwork.
0:32:06 > 0:32:08Look at those!
0:32:10 > 0:32:13It a bit '70s, but it's going to go with the peach ceiling.
0:32:15 > 0:32:18Frame constructed, Katie draws it into the room scheme
0:32:18 > 0:32:20with her rich use of colour.
0:32:22 > 0:32:24Katie's challenge complete,
0:32:24 > 0:32:27things are taking a little longer with Daniela.
0:32:33 > 0:32:37So I'm thinking that I want to do, like, a little kind of...
0:32:37 > 0:32:39Not Moroccan style, because it wouldn't go with my room,
0:32:39 > 0:32:43but a kind of low table that you can just sling a book on
0:32:43 > 0:32:44or I could put a cushion on,
0:32:44 > 0:32:46So something like that.
0:32:47 > 0:32:52And then these either in the same direction or crossing over.
0:32:52 > 0:32:56- I see, OK.- So layering them up.
0:32:56 > 0:32:57- Yeah, all right.- Cool.
0:33:01 > 0:33:05I'm just going to mask off a little geometric design on top of here.
0:33:12 > 0:33:16And completely unfazed by the three-hour deadline,
0:33:16 > 0:33:18Oliver's still mulling over his design.
0:33:18 > 0:33:22I'm just thinking.... I'm just thinking, kind of...
0:33:22 > 0:33:24working out shapes and ideas and stuff.
0:33:24 > 0:33:26I could cut them in half.
0:33:26 > 0:33:28OK, so that doesn't really work...
0:33:35 > 0:33:37With a little encouragement...
0:33:37 > 0:33:38It's quite a nice motif.
0:33:38 > 0:33:41..Oliver's masterpiece evolves.
0:33:41 > 0:33:44Yeah, it is. It's going to make a really nice flower.
0:33:44 > 0:33:47- HE LAUGHS - She wants to bring the outside in!
0:33:54 > 0:33:58- That's rather good, isn't it? - It's not bad, is it, considering?
0:33:58 > 0:34:00It really is.
0:34:00 > 0:34:02Three hours are up, and it's creative challenge time.
0:34:02 > 0:34:05- I'm dying to see what you've done. - It's behind you.
0:34:05 > 0:34:07- It's behind us?- Oh, my word!
0:34:07 > 0:34:09- That's clever.- That's very clever!
0:34:09 > 0:34:11- Here it is.- Oh, my God!
0:34:11 > 0:34:13I looked down there, and I saw a table.
0:34:13 > 0:34:15I thought, "Where did she get that from?"
0:34:15 > 0:34:17Hi, Oliver. Wow, look at that!
0:34:17 > 0:34:19Well, there's no need to ask you
0:34:19 > 0:34:21if we can have a look at your creative challenge.
0:34:21 > 0:34:24Very beautiful, actually, isn't it?
0:34:24 > 0:34:27And, at the end of the challenge, Katie's created a picture frame,
0:34:27 > 0:34:29Daniela, a table,
0:34:29 > 0:34:31and Oliver, some artwork.
0:34:31 > 0:34:35I feel so energised by those creative challenges.
0:34:35 > 0:34:36I'm so surprised.
0:34:36 > 0:34:39But it's just been amazing!
0:34:39 > 0:34:42It goes to show it is possible to be creative with something
0:34:42 > 0:34:44which is pretty humdrum in this world.
0:34:44 > 0:34:47- A coat hanger.- I know. - And can we pick a winner?
0:34:47 > 0:34:49I'm afraid I can't.
0:34:49 > 0:34:52- I think they're all good.- I think they all have come up trumps today.
0:34:56 > 0:34:57With the challenges completed,
0:34:57 > 0:35:01our designers turn their attentions back to the job in hand.
0:35:01 > 0:35:07- So, tomorrow, the fireplace, the hearth...- Yeah?
0:35:07 > 0:35:09- ..the shelf...- Yeah.
0:35:09 > 0:35:12And then we've got to construct the canopy that goes over the bed.
0:35:14 > 0:35:17So this is basically two minutes away from being done,
0:35:17 > 0:35:19which I'm so relieved about.
0:35:21 > 0:35:22Tonight, I've just got little jobs to do.
0:35:22 > 0:35:24Right, here you go.
0:35:26 > 0:35:28Lovely.
0:35:28 > 0:35:30I'm going to leave that with you
0:35:30 > 0:35:32cos I've got lots to get on with back at the hotel.
0:35:36 > 0:35:39Today has gone really, really well. It's gone brilliantly,
0:35:39 > 0:35:41but there's still things I need to do back at the hotel.
0:35:41 > 0:35:45I've got some cushions to finish, I've got some curtains to make,
0:35:45 > 0:35:49so it's going to be a big sewing night for me this evening.
0:35:49 > 0:35:51With all three designers up against it,
0:35:51 > 0:35:53this could be the beginning of a long night.
0:36:04 > 0:36:07It's the start of day three, and there's just a few hours left
0:36:07 > 0:36:09for our designers to pull together their schemes.
0:36:09 > 0:36:13They'll soon find out whether all their hard work has been enough
0:36:13 > 0:36:16for them to progress to the next round.
0:36:16 > 0:36:18Or whether they'll be the one going home.
0:36:19 > 0:36:22I've been up since three o'clock this morning, actually,
0:36:22 > 0:36:26and I feel, actually, so full of energy. It's madness. It's, like,
0:36:26 > 0:36:29'there's so much to do. It's all to play for.
0:36:29 > 0:36:30'I've just got to keep going.'
0:36:30 > 0:36:32OK, day three, let's get started.
0:36:32 > 0:36:35- Morning!- Morning.- You all right?
0:36:35 > 0:36:37It's all a blur. I was up so late doing stuff.
0:36:37 > 0:36:41But I got everything done, so I'm super-pleased.
0:36:41 > 0:36:43I'm definitely feeling the pressure today.
0:36:43 > 0:36:45- Hi, guys.- All right?- Last day!
0:36:45 > 0:36:47But I think we're going to get it done.
0:36:47 > 0:36:49You know, I'm not going to not let it get done.
0:36:49 > 0:36:52But, yeah, obviously, there's a lot of pressure.
0:36:54 > 0:36:57At Oliver's, he's taking a bit of a gamble
0:36:57 > 0:37:01as he experiments with his decorative lead strips.
0:37:01 > 0:37:04They've each got to be cut out individually.
0:37:04 > 0:37:08I've marked out, very loosely, a pattern to follow.
0:37:08 > 0:37:10I've never done it before,
0:37:10 > 0:37:13and, first time, it's not bad.
0:37:14 > 0:37:17But they're still playing catch-up with the paint.
0:37:17 > 0:37:21Progress so far, so the room's had to have its second coat of paint.
0:37:21 > 0:37:23It's kind of holding things up a little bit.
0:37:23 > 0:37:25They're working as fast as they can
0:37:25 > 0:37:28but I would prefer if they would just work a little bit faster.
0:37:29 > 0:37:32So, what do the judges think of his scheme?
0:37:32 > 0:37:34How about Oliver's brief?
0:37:34 > 0:37:38I mean, the whole idea was that he's bringing the outside in.
0:37:38 > 0:37:40Cos it's actually quite a dull, dark room, that,
0:37:40 > 0:37:42and it just needs to feel more like a garden room.
0:37:42 > 0:37:46He's picked out this rather floral, not Kelly Hoppen-liked chintz.
0:37:46 > 0:37:50I think he's designed something that is very...
0:37:50 > 0:37:52It's good. It's very eclectic.
0:37:52 > 0:37:55He's taken on board putting panelling up halfway,
0:37:55 > 0:37:56he's done good colours.
0:37:56 > 0:37:59What you've got is a nice, neutral background
0:37:59 > 0:38:02with some panelling which feels OK, and then there's that chintz.
0:38:03 > 0:38:05And with more than just a hint of chintz,
0:38:05 > 0:38:09Katie's rushing ahead with her grandiose Versailles scheme.
0:38:09 > 0:38:12And things are getting a little topsy-turvy.
0:38:12 > 0:38:17- I'd go, like, something like that. - Lower, lower, lower. Lower!
0:38:17 > 0:38:18Is that not upside down?
0:38:20 > 0:38:22That's the right way, isn't it, surely?
0:38:22 > 0:38:24Yeah, I think you're right, actually.
0:38:24 > 0:38:26So, yeah, I think we should do them the other way -
0:38:26 > 0:38:29- that looks much better. - SHE LAUGHS
0:38:31 > 0:38:34The really tough brief was the one for Katie,
0:38:34 > 0:38:40because it asked for Riviera, some Provencale, Versailles.
0:38:40 > 0:38:43And what she's actually created is everything.
0:38:43 > 0:38:46She's got this peach idea in her head, hasn't she?
0:38:46 > 0:38:48She thinks she's going to carry the banner
0:38:48 > 0:38:51for reintroducing peach into our world.
0:38:51 > 0:38:52- Good luck with that.- Mm.
0:38:53 > 0:38:55At Daniela's, her lists are getting longer.
0:38:57 > 0:38:58You don't have to agree to any of it.
0:38:58 > 0:39:00This is just what I would love done.
0:39:00 > 0:39:02THEY LAUGH
0:39:02 > 0:39:04Look at the size of the list!
0:39:04 > 0:39:06That's not just for him - that's for us as well.
0:39:06 > 0:39:08Us?!
0:39:08 > 0:39:11And, top of her list is a new desk for Pippa.
0:39:11 > 0:39:13We haven't got the hinges that we need
0:39:13 > 0:39:16to do the fold-down legs, right?
0:39:16 > 0:39:19- Is that right, Stuart?- Yeah. - Just use the things that you've got,
0:39:19 > 0:39:23and as long as it folds down and it connects, then I'm happy.
0:39:23 > 0:39:25- Hold it there.- Yeah.
0:39:28 > 0:39:29- Hmm...- All right?
0:39:29 > 0:39:32Hang on, let me get a better positioning.
0:39:32 > 0:39:34Let me try a different way of holding it.
0:39:34 > 0:39:36- Like this. - I'm just going to mark it up.
0:39:36 > 0:39:38With the desk a key part of the scheme,
0:39:38 > 0:39:41the pressure's on to get the joinery right.
0:39:42 > 0:39:45- All right.- All right. - Let go. I've got it.
0:39:45 > 0:39:46You've got it? OK.
0:39:46 > 0:39:49So, how's Daniela getting on? Are those lists helping her?
0:39:49 > 0:39:51Daniela's Little Miss Organised,
0:39:51 > 0:39:53and I think she's brilliant at what she's doing,
0:39:53 > 0:39:56but she is frantically painting cupboards this morning,
0:39:56 > 0:40:01and very little time to go, so I'm just praying that she gets it done.
0:40:01 > 0:40:03The thing is is we're very excited about what she's doing,
0:40:03 > 0:40:06so anything that is missing from her project
0:40:06 > 0:40:08is going to be a big disappointment.
0:40:11 > 0:40:14Despite her long to-do list,
0:40:14 > 0:40:16Daniela's in the final flurries of finessing...
0:40:16 > 0:40:17Erm...
0:40:17 > 0:40:21Her Tropicana Regency-themed room for Pippa.
0:40:24 > 0:40:25Argh!
0:40:29 > 0:40:32Go, just go! Yeah!
0:40:32 > 0:40:34Yeah, there, perfect, perfect! Quick, quick, quick!
0:40:41 > 0:40:43OK. OK, OK, OK, OK.
0:40:44 > 0:40:46And Daniela's 48 hours are up.
0:40:46 > 0:40:48Finished.
0:40:48 > 0:40:51I'm just so satisfied, really.
0:40:51 > 0:40:53You know, there could always be a little bit more
0:40:53 > 0:40:55but that's cos I'm a perfectionist,
0:40:55 > 0:40:58and I would've just liked that little bit more.
0:40:58 > 0:41:00But it's my first time at doing this,
0:41:00 > 0:41:03and, yeah, I'm proud of myself.
0:41:03 > 0:41:07But has Daniela succeeded in adding that Californian vibe into the room?
0:41:09 > 0:41:11Before, this was a typical girl's bedroom,
0:41:11 > 0:41:13with safe, muted tones and florals.
0:41:15 > 0:41:17Now it's a stylish space.
0:41:19 > 0:41:20With more of a teenage attitude.
0:41:22 > 0:41:25Personalised with Pippa's portrait.
0:41:25 > 0:41:28And a cool chaise for hanging out
0:41:28 > 0:41:32under the splattered-paint effect ceiling and Sputnik light.
0:41:32 > 0:41:35The updated cupboard is now a practical work station,
0:41:35 > 0:41:37with drop-down desk.
0:41:44 > 0:41:46- Oh, goodness.- Oh, my word.
0:41:46 > 0:41:49Her styling ability is extraordinary!
0:41:49 > 0:41:53I mean, this kind of LA-Palm Springs kind of look
0:41:53 > 0:41:55that is just so perfect.
0:41:55 > 0:41:57So, she's great with detail,
0:41:57 > 0:42:00but I think she's great with detail which is to do with fabric.
0:42:00 > 0:42:02Because I'm looking at these doors,
0:42:02 > 0:42:06and I have to say they're just a little bit shoddy on the edges.
0:42:06 > 0:42:10They could've done with a bit more sanding and just a bit more care.
0:42:10 > 0:42:12Behind here is meant to be a little sewing cupboard.
0:42:12 > 0:42:14That's right, I'd forgotten about that.
0:42:14 > 0:42:16Well, it's there.
0:42:16 > 0:42:19She's got this little flap that you open up for...
0:42:19 > 0:42:22- DESK CLATTERS - Ooh...
0:42:22 > 0:42:24That's a bit difficult.
0:42:24 > 0:42:26There should be supporting leg for the desk.
0:42:26 > 0:42:28It really looks like they rushed out the door.
0:42:28 > 0:42:31They've even left their coffee cup underneath there.
0:42:31 > 0:42:33- It's feeling a little bit unloved. - She's run out of time.
0:42:33 > 0:42:35- Yeah.- And that's the problem.
0:42:35 > 0:42:38The homeowner's opinion will also be taken into consideration
0:42:38 > 0:42:41when the judges make their final decision.
0:42:41 > 0:42:44But will the Tropicana Regency-style design
0:42:44 > 0:42:45be too grown-up for a 12-year-old?
0:42:45 > 0:42:47Right, come on.
0:42:50 > 0:42:52Wow, that's amazing, Pippa!
0:42:52 > 0:42:53Make yourself at home.
0:42:53 > 0:42:57- I love it! - I love those cupboards.- The same.
0:42:57 > 0:43:00That's a mum thing to say - practicality and storage.
0:43:00 > 0:43:03I know, I'm sorry. I love the photograph.
0:43:03 > 0:43:04Have you seen the photograph of you?
0:43:04 > 0:43:07PIPPA LAUGHS It's a beautiful photograph!
0:43:07 > 0:43:10- It's lovely. - Have you looked up there?
0:43:10 > 0:43:13Oh, yeah! Oh, I really like it.
0:43:13 > 0:43:15- You weren't quite sure to begin with.- No.
0:43:15 > 0:43:18I think it works with everything else, though, now.
0:43:18 > 0:43:20- Yeah, I like it. - So, we've got practicality.
0:43:20 > 0:43:24- Yeah. - We've got colour, we've got design.
0:43:24 > 0:43:27Do you think this is a room that you can grow into?
0:43:27 > 0:43:29Yeah, definitely.
0:43:32 > 0:43:34With the end of the challenge in sight,
0:43:34 > 0:43:38Katie's determined to squeeze in every aspect of her design...
0:43:38 > 0:43:40And then maybe just go slightly higher.
0:43:40 > 0:43:43Don't line it up with a radiator, just in a little bit.
0:43:43 > 0:43:44Yeah, lovely.
0:43:44 > 0:43:47..in the hope that she'll win over the homeowners and the judges,
0:43:47 > 0:43:50despite altering the wardrobe door design
0:43:50 > 0:43:53and using the peach paint on the ceiling they were so unsure of.
0:43:55 > 0:44:00And maximising every single second, Katie has hit her 48-hour deadline.
0:44:03 > 0:44:07Success. Feeling really happy.
0:44:08 > 0:44:09Let's see what the judges think.
0:44:13 > 0:44:15I know that I've worked the hardest that I can,
0:44:15 > 0:44:19and I hope I've delivered absolutely everything that I wanted to.
0:44:19 > 0:44:23But has Katie created that cornucopia of all things French
0:44:23 > 0:44:24that her homeowner asked for?
0:44:26 > 0:44:3048 hours ago, the room was bland, uninspiring,
0:44:30 > 0:44:32and monopolised by magnolia.
0:44:33 > 0:44:36Now it's a room that really makes a statement.
0:44:38 > 0:44:41The rickety wardrobes now ooze French charm.
0:44:44 > 0:44:48The bed has been restyled with a dramatic new headboard.
0:44:48 > 0:44:51And the fireplace is now a bold focal point.
0:44:52 > 0:44:55All finished off with gold and lace detailing.
0:45:00 > 0:45:04Wow. There's just so much to take in.
0:45:04 > 0:45:08I do love the colour and the wardrobes.
0:45:08 > 0:45:10I love the little detail in the corner.
0:45:10 > 0:45:13I like the way they're shaped. I think that's really nice.
0:45:13 > 0:45:15That whole elevation works really well, doesn't it?
0:45:15 > 0:45:19Bar the picture frame in the middle with the bits of lace -
0:45:19 > 0:45:20that makes my toes curl.
0:45:20 > 0:45:23But I actually rather like the stripes with the gold.
0:45:23 > 0:45:26- It looks really effective. - That whole wall really is effective.
0:45:26 > 0:45:28She's a really good stylist, actually.
0:45:28 > 0:45:30I like how she's put it all together.
0:45:30 > 0:45:33But, you see, she's tried to bring the peach in...
0:45:33 > 0:45:35Yeah.
0:45:35 > 0:45:37- It matches perfectly.- Yeah.
0:45:37 > 0:45:40And, you know what, the peach goes really well with the grey.
0:45:40 > 0:45:41It does.
0:45:41 > 0:45:45It's just this and this and this, for me, just completely throws it.
0:45:45 > 0:45:47I think we're both in agreement.
0:45:47 > 0:45:51A bedroom should have a serene, calming feel about it,
0:45:51 > 0:45:53and, yet, she's in fact clashing colours.
0:45:53 > 0:45:56But I think she's put it together very well.
0:45:56 > 0:45:59She's worked this brief, and it was a complicated brief,
0:45:59 > 0:46:02when you have Versailles, the Riviera, Provencale
0:46:02 > 0:46:04all thrown in one,
0:46:04 > 0:46:07that is not easy, and she's actually pulled it off.
0:46:09 > 0:46:12But has Katie managed to fulfil Jane, the homeowner's, brief?
0:46:17 > 0:46:19- Wow.- So, what do you think?
0:46:19 > 0:46:21- It's busy.- Is it too busy?
0:46:22 > 0:46:25If I had been doing it by myself, I'd have made it less busy.
0:46:25 > 0:46:27But, actually, I quite like it.
0:46:27 > 0:46:29Not sure about the picture up there.
0:46:30 > 0:46:33About the nature of the picture, or the picture being there?
0:46:33 > 0:46:35Oh, no, just the nature of the picture.
0:46:35 > 0:46:38- And then there's the peach. - Then there's the peach.
0:46:38 > 0:46:39I quite like it.
0:46:39 > 0:46:43I do quite like it. I would never have put in my room myself.
0:46:43 > 0:46:45There's just something appealing about it.
0:46:45 > 0:46:47How about that kind of French feel you wanted?
0:46:47 > 0:46:50- That Versailles, Provence feel? - I think it's got a French feel.
0:46:50 > 0:46:53It's definitely got a French feel to it. Yes.
0:46:53 > 0:46:55In the basement of his home,
0:46:55 > 0:46:57Oliver's design is coming together
0:46:57 > 0:47:00to create his brief for bringing the outside in...
0:47:01 > 0:47:02..with added chintz.
0:47:05 > 0:47:08Little bit that way. Just a small amount.
0:47:08 > 0:47:11- That's it, yeah. Perfect.- Yeah? - Absolutely spot on.
0:47:11 > 0:47:13Happy with the bed, he turns his attention to the walls.
0:47:13 > 0:47:18Just...cutting out some photocopies of lithographs,
0:47:18 > 0:47:20just to fill up the frames.
0:47:24 > 0:47:25One.
0:47:27 > 0:47:30And ignores the homeowner's reluctance to have plants indoors.
0:47:32 > 0:47:34It's a pot plant. Just a little bit of life.
0:47:34 > 0:47:37And Oliver's 48 hours are up.
0:47:39 > 0:47:41Not bad.
0:47:49 > 0:47:53Most of all, I feel relieved, I feel relieved that it's done.
0:47:53 > 0:47:55It was really, really pressurised.
0:47:55 > 0:47:57Erm... Yeah.
0:47:57 > 0:48:00I didn't realise quite how pressurised it would be.
0:48:00 > 0:48:04It's not an easy walk in the park, that's for sure.
0:48:04 > 0:48:06Oliver's chintz and pot plant
0:48:06 > 0:48:08may have deviated from the homeowner's wishes,
0:48:08 > 0:48:12but has he satisfied the brief of bringing the outside in?
0:48:13 > 0:48:1648 hours ago, this was a dark basement room,
0:48:16 > 0:48:19home to nothing but forgotten furniture.
0:48:21 > 0:48:23Now it's a light and airy panelled guest bedroom.
0:48:29 > 0:48:33Oliver's hanger artwork has pride of place on the wall.
0:48:34 > 0:48:37The handmade headboard draws the eye to the outside.
0:48:39 > 0:48:43And his hula-hooper light hangs majestically above the bed.
0:48:45 > 0:48:47While the addition of lead to the mirrored cupboard
0:48:47 > 0:48:49adds a botanical feel.
0:48:53 > 0:48:55Wow.
0:48:55 > 0:48:57This is a bit of a transformation, isn't it,
0:48:57 > 0:48:59from when we first saw this room?
0:48:59 > 0:49:02He's even managed to make some of the fabrics,
0:49:02 > 0:49:04which neither of us were very happy about -
0:49:04 > 0:49:05you certainly with that chintz,
0:49:05 > 0:49:08me with those sort of brightly coloured velvets -
0:49:08 > 0:49:10and he's made them look good.
0:49:10 > 0:49:13I have to say I still hate the headboard.
0:49:13 > 0:49:16Although the chintz is quite softening,
0:49:16 > 0:49:21and part of the brief was to bring the garden into the room.
0:49:21 > 0:49:25- And so it does reflect that... - ..but they didn't want chintz.
0:49:25 > 0:49:26But this sofa is glorious.
0:49:26 > 0:49:30That is just the perfect way to put cushions onto a sofa.
0:49:30 > 0:49:33I know, and we didn't really like that when we saw it on the board,
0:49:33 > 0:49:34but now it looks fantastic,
0:49:34 > 0:49:38and it looks great against that beautiful grey panelling there.
0:49:38 > 0:49:42And the reason it works, for me, is this room, being a basement room,
0:49:42 > 0:49:43felt fairly cold,
0:49:43 > 0:49:47and, yet, just putting another layer on it has warmed it all up.
0:49:47 > 0:49:51Although I'm not happy with the way that Oliver has hung those pictures
0:49:51 > 0:49:53because there's not enough tensions
0:49:53 > 0:49:55- between them and the back of the sofa.- Yeah.
0:49:55 > 0:49:58For me, it should either be on the panelling or above
0:49:58 > 0:50:01- and sort of closer together. - Yeah. Not halfway.- Yeah.
0:50:06 > 0:50:09But will the homeowners fall for Oliver's little bit of chintz?
0:50:13 > 0:50:14Ooh.
0:50:15 > 0:50:17Wow. Wow!
0:50:17 > 0:50:20And I don't see a household plant...
0:50:20 > 0:50:22Oh, I do, yes!
0:50:22 > 0:50:25- Put right in front of your nose! - It survived.
0:50:25 > 0:50:26Has he brought the outside in?
0:50:28 > 0:50:30I think he's framed the windows really nicely
0:50:30 > 0:50:32- so you get a sense of that view. - Yes.
0:50:32 > 0:50:34And what do you think of the mirrors?
0:50:34 > 0:50:36I'm not sure about the leading.
0:50:36 > 0:50:40I think I visualised it as a bit more like a garden gate.
0:50:40 > 0:50:42Do you think it all melds together well?
0:50:42 > 0:50:47I think it probably is a little bit chintzy for my taste, I guess.
0:50:47 > 0:50:50I'm getting the sense it's kind of 50-50, you like some bits,
0:50:50 > 0:50:5250-50, you don't like the other bits.
0:50:52 > 0:50:54Yeah, perhaps.
0:50:56 > 0:50:57Yeah.
0:50:59 > 0:51:00With the judging over,
0:51:00 > 0:51:03it's an anxious wait for our three amateur designers.
0:51:05 > 0:51:06For the greater good,
0:51:06 > 0:51:10I'm obviously more interested in what the homeowners think,
0:51:10 > 0:51:12and how they feel about their room.
0:51:12 > 0:51:15But for purely selfish reasons...
0:51:16 > 0:51:19Of course I care what Dan and Kelly say.
0:51:19 > 0:51:21That goes without saying.
0:51:23 > 0:51:28I've enjoyed this process so much. I would do it again in a heartbeat.
0:51:28 > 0:51:30There's nothing really I would change, either.
0:51:30 > 0:51:32I would definitely love to go through.
0:51:37 > 0:51:40I've slaved over this. I've put my heart and soul into it.
0:51:40 > 0:51:43And, you know, I've put so much passion into it,
0:51:43 > 0:51:46so, yeah, hopefully it'll be enough.
0:51:49 > 0:51:51So, was Daniela organised to the very end?
0:51:51 > 0:51:53Not the very end.
0:51:53 > 0:51:57She was organised, but there were a few little bits missing,
0:51:57 > 0:51:58which was slightly disappointing.
0:51:58 > 0:52:01I mean, she had an incredible eye for design.
0:52:01 > 0:52:04I think she captured a wonderful room
0:52:04 > 0:52:07for a 12-year-old going on five years.
0:52:07 > 0:52:11But where she really let herself down was on the build.
0:52:11 > 0:52:15Both the homeowners, mother and daughter, well, they both loved it.
0:52:15 > 0:52:16Mother loved the practicality.
0:52:16 > 0:52:19The 12-year-old...well, she just loved every bit of it.
0:52:19 > 0:52:21Including the spotted ceiling.
0:52:21 > 0:52:23She wasn't quite so sure about the spotted ceiling to begin with,
0:52:23 > 0:52:25but, yeah, she loved it.
0:52:25 > 0:52:27Now, Katie had quite a tough brief.
0:52:27 > 0:52:29Well, the problem with Katie is
0:52:29 > 0:52:32that she took the brief too literally, I think,
0:52:32 > 0:52:34and she didn't quite know how to edit it.
0:52:34 > 0:52:36And I think that was her biggest mistake,
0:52:36 > 0:52:37because if she'd done that,
0:52:37 > 0:52:41it would've been a more pared-down feeling and look to the room.
0:52:41 > 0:52:44- There was a lot going on in there, wasn't there?- A huge amount.
0:52:44 > 0:52:45I think there WAS a lot going on,
0:52:45 > 0:52:49but what she did do was styled beautifully.
0:52:49 > 0:52:51What did the client think?
0:52:51 > 0:52:53Well...she liked it overall,
0:52:53 > 0:52:56but I got the sense that perhaps she was being a bit polite.
0:52:56 > 0:53:00Oliver had a difficult brief with a basement bedroom,
0:53:00 > 0:53:03and, yet, he was asked to bring the outside in as well.
0:53:03 > 0:53:05I mean, that's a tough room to design
0:53:05 > 0:53:08because it's dark, it's underground,
0:53:08 > 0:53:11and I think the thing is the room turned out really well.
0:53:11 > 0:53:14I loved the panelling that was high up, with the lovely grey.
0:53:14 > 0:53:17The way in which he had done the lead on the mirrored cupboards,
0:53:17 > 0:53:19I thought that was really, really good.
0:53:19 > 0:53:23The problem I had was the chintz on the headboard
0:53:23 > 0:53:25because I think that was his interpretation
0:53:25 > 0:53:27of bringing the garden inside,
0:53:27 > 0:53:31and one of the things they had requested, of dislikes, was chintz.
0:53:31 > 0:53:32What did they think?
0:53:32 > 0:53:35- I would say they were kind of 50-50. - Oh, really?
0:53:35 > 0:53:37Loved it and disliked it.
0:53:37 > 0:53:42So, three very creative people who have put their all into these rooms.
0:53:42 > 0:53:43- Which one's going to go?- Ooh.
0:53:47 > 0:53:50Now, Regency architecture, particularly in a spa town,
0:53:50 > 0:53:52is all about harmony and proportion
0:53:52 > 0:53:55but with an added dash of fashion and frivolity.
0:53:55 > 0:53:58I think that attitude ran through all three of your rooms.
0:53:59 > 0:54:05Daniela, your presentation was phenomenal. I loved it.
0:54:05 > 0:54:07Where you let yourself down, and the client down,
0:54:07 > 0:54:09was in your production of joinery,
0:54:09 > 0:54:11and that's something that you're going to have to learn
0:54:11 > 0:54:13in the future.
0:54:15 > 0:54:19Katie, I loved your passion and your energy.
0:54:19 > 0:54:20It was boundless!
0:54:20 > 0:54:23But, actually, you have a great desire to please, too,
0:54:23 > 0:54:27so you wanted to get everything done in that brief in that room.
0:54:27 > 0:54:31And in a room that small, in a room that should be quite serene,
0:54:31 > 0:54:34it was maybe just a little bit too much.
0:54:35 > 0:54:40Oliver, your ability to design with an eclectic style is really good,
0:54:40 > 0:54:42but the one thing that lets you down
0:54:42 > 0:54:45is asking the question with your client
0:54:45 > 0:54:49and understanding what it is that they actually want.
0:54:49 > 0:54:51And that's something that you can learn from this.
0:54:51 > 0:54:55There's only room for two in the next round, I'm afraid.
0:54:58 > 0:55:01So we have to say goodbye to one of the three.
0:55:01 > 0:55:04The first designer going through is...
0:55:07 > 0:55:09..Daniela.
0:55:09 > 0:55:11Goodness. Thank you.
0:55:11 > 0:55:16The second designer going through to the next round is...
0:55:19 > 0:55:22- ..Oliver.- Oh, my God!
0:55:22 > 0:55:25So, Katie, I'm afraid it's goodbye.
0:55:25 > 0:55:27That's all right, that's all right.
0:55:29 > 0:55:32I think the standard of competition was really high,
0:55:32 > 0:55:37and I think that each and every one of them had brilliant qualities.
0:55:39 > 0:55:42I'm so happy, so relieved as well.
0:55:42 > 0:55:45- I got in.- Yay! Well done.
0:55:45 > 0:55:47- That's fantastic!- Thank you.
0:55:47 > 0:55:50Daniela had to go through because she's such a great stylist,
0:55:50 > 0:55:53and the room looked fabulous as a result.
0:55:53 > 0:55:56My concern, though, is that she thought joinery
0:55:56 > 0:55:58was just one more thing to tick off her list,
0:55:58 > 0:55:59and she didn't realise that it needs
0:55:59 > 0:56:01a lot more work and thought than that.
0:56:01 > 0:56:04You did a great job, Katie, honestly.
0:56:04 > 0:56:06Don't give up. Don't give up.
0:56:06 > 0:56:08I'm completely devastated.
0:56:08 > 0:56:10You did a fantastic job. You really did.
0:56:10 > 0:56:14I'm hoping that the fact that I'm really upset shows...
0:56:14 > 0:56:17that it's a big thing for me and it's definitely...
0:56:17 > 0:56:19it's definitely something I want to carry on doing
0:56:19 > 0:56:20and I'm going to carry on doing.
0:56:20 > 0:56:24And, yeah, I do see this as totally the beginning for me.
0:56:24 > 0:56:26You all right? Do you like it?
0:56:26 > 0:56:29- We do like it.- You do, yes? - Love it, love it.
0:56:29 > 0:56:30Yeah?
0:56:30 > 0:56:32Sadly, Katie is leaving the competition today
0:56:32 > 0:56:34because one person has to go,
0:56:34 > 0:56:37but mainly because her edit was just not good enough.
0:56:37 > 0:56:41She took everything on board that the client wanted,
0:56:41 > 0:56:43but she didn't know how to pare it down.
0:56:44 > 0:56:45I'm absolutely flabbergasted.
0:56:45 > 0:56:47I just can't believe!
0:56:47 > 0:56:49I was convinced, I was so convinced
0:56:49 > 0:56:52they were going to say Katie's name instead of mine.
0:56:52 > 0:56:53I was convinced I was going home.
0:56:53 > 0:56:56Well done.
0:56:56 > 0:56:59- We're so pleased you got through. - Congratulations.
0:56:59 > 0:57:01'Oliver is so laid back.'
0:57:01 > 0:57:04And quite rightly so because he's a very relaxed designer.
0:57:04 > 0:57:06And it's very clear that he's creative,
0:57:06 > 0:57:08and he's creative on his feet.
0:57:08 > 0:57:12As a result, we saw a beautifully balanced room.
0:57:12 > 0:57:15When the bed's there inviting you into it...
0:57:15 > 0:57:17Exactly. It's got a lovely vibe.
0:57:17 > 0:57:20My concern with Oliver is I really don't think
0:57:20 > 0:57:23he was questioning the homeowner enough.
0:57:23 > 0:57:24I think, going forward,
0:57:24 > 0:57:27he's just got to be a little bit more curious and say,
0:57:27 > 0:57:28"So what is it you're really wanting?
0:57:28 > 0:57:31"What is it that you're meaning with that brief?"
0:57:31 > 0:57:33What I'd like to do, maybe,
0:57:33 > 0:57:35is take a little bit more of a risk for the second one.
0:57:35 > 0:57:39I think I need to put a little bit of Oliver into what I've done.
0:57:40 > 0:57:42I'm really going to up the ante now.
0:57:44 > 0:57:47Think about how I can really surprise the judges next time.
0:57:52 > 0:57:54Joseph Pitt's vision left Cheltenham
0:57:54 > 0:57:58with some of the finest Regency architecture in the entire country.
0:57:58 > 0:58:02And, by creating bespoke bedrooms for their homeowners,
0:58:02 > 0:58:04our designers have added their own little touches of elegance
0:58:04 > 0:58:06to this most refined of spa towns.
0:58:11 > 0:58:15Next time, Victorian terraced living rooms.
0:58:15 > 0:58:17- Wow.- This is just so clever, actually.
0:58:18 > 0:58:21But breathing new life into these small spaces
0:58:21 > 0:58:23is fraught with challenges.
0:58:23 > 0:58:24I'm feeling really panicked.
0:58:24 > 0:58:26- Timing's an issue.- Yeah.- OK.
0:58:26 > 0:58:28Up the creek without a paddle.
