0:00:02 > 0:00:04Here in the UK we're blessed with an enormous variety of types and styles

0:00:04 > 0:00:06of buildings that we call home.

0:00:06 > 0:00:10From thatched cottages to 1930s Art Deco apartments.

0:00:10 > 0:00:14Regency terraces to contemporary townhouses.

0:00:14 > 0:00:17But sometimes while the exterior creates a wow factor,

0:00:17 > 0:00:21the interior can be distinctly lacking.

0:00:22 > 0:00:25So we've gathered some of the UK's most talented

0:00:25 > 0:00:28amateur interior designers to show us what they're made of.

0:00:30 > 0:00:33- Ready to hear my plans? - Let's get started, guys.

0:00:33 > 0:00:35We're in the quarterfinals...

0:00:35 > 0:00:37It looks really nice.

0:00:37 > 0:00:39..and spirits are high.

0:00:39 > 0:00:42And I'm happy. So, that's OK.

0:00:42 > 0:00:44Putting the designers through their paces

0:00:44 > 0:00:48and scrutinising their every move are judges Daniel Hopwood,

0:00:48 > 0:00:49designer, and a director

0:00:49 > 0:00:52of the British Institute of Interior Design...

0:00:52 > 0:00:55This year we've got new challenges for the designers,

0:00:55 > 0:00:57we're really going to push them to the limit.

0:00:57 > 0:01:00..and internationally renowned interior designer Kelly Hoppen.

0:01:00 > 0:01:04As a judge in this competition, I want to see perfection.

0:01:04 > 0:01:06I think I will be quite a hard judge.

0:01:06 > 0:01:10But it's going to take a lot of creativity and hard work

0:01:10 > 0:01:13to be crowned winner of The Great Interior Design Challenge.

0:01:24 > 0:01:26This time we're in the picturesque town of Worsley

0:01:26 > 0:01:28on the outskirts of Salford.

0:01:28 > 0:01:30Our two quarterfinalists will be working on two rooms each

0:01:30 > 0:01:33in neighbouring mock-Tudor houses.

0:01:35 > 0:01:39James and Daniela have battled their way through the first round

0:01:39 > 0:01:43and now they're competing for a place in the semifinals.

0:01:44 > 0:01:49They'll have just 48 hours over three days, and £2,000,

0:01:49 > 0:01:51to transform two rooms.

0:01:53 > 0:01:55This time their teams have doubled.

0:01:55 > 0:01:59They'll have two builders and two decorators to manage.

0:01:59 > 0:02:01Oh! I'm freaking out now.

0:02:01 > 0:02:03And in their toughest challenge yet,

0:02:03 > 0:02:07their first room must be finished and judged on day two.

0:02:09 > 0:02:11So, they'll need to work hard to impress.

0:02:11 > 0:02:15At this point they really have to stretch their creativity.

0:02:15 > 0:02:16I need to see that extra special bit

0:02:16 > 0:02:19of sparkle that could turn them into a professional.

0:02:19 > 0:02:22I've really had to up my game this time. I want to impress the judges.

0:02:22 > 0:02:24I think I have the talent and the creativity

0:02:24 > 0:02:26to get through to the next round,

0:02:26 > 0:02:28so watch this space!

0:02:28 > 0:02:29HE CHUCKLES

0:02:38 > 0:02:40Today, Worsley is a pretty village

0:02:40 > 0:02:43made up of mock-Tudor Arts and Crafts properties

0:02:43 > 0:02:46dating back to the early 1900s.

0:02:46 > 0:02:49But its rural appearance belies its industrial past.

0:02:51 > 0:02:53In 1759, the 3rd Duke of Bridgewater

0:02:53 > 0:02:57began work on one of the technological wonders of his age.

0:02:57 > 0:02:59Just beyond the bridge over there

0:02:59 > 0:03:02lie hidden 50 miles of underground tunnels,

0:03:02 > 0:03:06dug out into the hills to reach the seams of coal

0:03:06 > 0:03:08that lay buried inside.

0:03:08 > 0:03:12The tunnels were the brainchild of the engineer John Gilbert,

0:03:12 > 0:03:15designed to transport thousands of tonnes of coal.

0:03:15 > 0:03:17It was boom time for Worsley.

0:03:17 > 0:03:19It might look all quaint today,

0:03:19 > 0:03:23but back in the late 18th century, it was a hive of industry,

0:03:23 > 0:03:25buzzing with blacksmiths and boatyards.

0:03:25 > 0:03:29Now, these days, its narrow boats carry passengers and holidaymakers,

0:03:29 > 0:03:30not coal.

0:03:31 > 0:03:34And today, in this tranquil waterside setting,

0:03:34 > 0:03:36with two rooms to transform,

0:03:36 > 0:03:39the pressure is on for our ambitious designers.

0:03:41 > 0:03:43In a pair of monochrome mock-Tudor houses,

0:03:43 > 0:03:45they'll each have a bedroom...

0:03:46 > 0:03:48..and a living room to work on.

0:03:54 > 0:03:56The first designer returning

0:03:56 > 0:03:59is 30-year-old photographer Daniela, from Essex.

0:04:00 > 0:04:05In the heats, she created a regency Tropicana bedroom that delighted

0:04:05 > 0:04:06the homeowners.

0:04:07 > 0:04:10Wow, that's amazing!

0:04:10 > 0:04:12I really like it.

0:04:13 > 0:04:15So, judges, we've two very different designers.

0:04:15 > 0:04:18We've got Daniela. What are your hopes and fears for her?

0:04:18 > 0:04:22She designs well, but her styling is unbelievable.

0:04:22 > 0:04:26She put things together really well, but it's the basics,

0:04:26 > 0:04:28the foundations of good interior design,

0:04:28 > 0:04:32which is all about the detailing, which she is not very good at doing.

0:04:32 > 0:04:34It's whether or not she can actually finish it...

0:04:34 > 0:04:36- Exactly.- ..to a level that is exceptional.

0:04:36 > 0:04:39With the amount that she does...

0:04:39 > 0:04:41Oh, I don't know.

0:04:43 > 0:04:46Daniela's challenge this time is to breathe new life

0:04:46 > 0:04:49into John and Julie's family home.

0:04:49 > 0:04:52Thank you very much.

0:04:52 > 0:04:55Although both designers have had their briefs for just over a week,

0:04:55 > 0:04:59today is the first time they'll be seeing the rooms in person.

0:04:59 > 0:05:00Starting with the bedroom.

0:05:02 > 0:05:03Oh, my goodness!

0:05:03 > 0:05:07I think for the bedroom, we'd like to go Scandi-style,

0:05:07 > 0:05:10fairly pared back.

0:05:10 > 0:05:13I'd like to keep the vanity unit because I think it's, you know,

0:05:13 > 0:05:16fairly handy. But I would like them to paint it

0:05:16 > 0:05:19because I'm not keen on that mahogany colour.

0:05:19 > 0:05:23The second room for Daniela to tackle is the living room.

0:05:23 > 0:05:24Oh, wow!

0:05:24 > 0:05:27I think it's my favourite room in the house.

0:05:27 > 0:05:30I envisage it being a room where we would go and relax.

0:05:30 > 0:05:35I would like lots of different textures, you know, velvets, silks,

0:05:35 > 0:05:36that sort of thing.

0:05:36 > 0:05:38Quite a luxurious room, I think.

0:05:44 > 0:05:48On hand to assess her performance are industry experts Kelly Hoppen

0:05:48 > 0:05:49and Daniel Hopwood.

0:05:49 > 0:05:52Thank you for setting me such a lovely brief, to start with.

0:05:52 > 0:05:56They'll be looking out for strong presentation skills,

0:05:56 > 0:06:00as well as an ability to adapt to her clients' needs.

0:06:00 > 0:06:03Daniela's kicking off with John and Julie's bedroom.

0:06:03 > 0:06:05You said that you wanted Scandi.

0:06:05 > 0:06:09Normally Scandi is quite kind of, you know, pared back.

0:06:09 > 0:06:13- Yeah.- But I think with a house of this kind of size and grandeur,

0:06:13 > 0:06:16I wanted to bring some sort of luxury element into that as well,

0:06:16 > 0:06:18to give it that kind of warmth.

0:06:18 > 0:06:21Tied together by the same tones and colours, you know, just whites,

0:06:21 > 0:06:26creams, really neutral, really calming and almost quite angelic.

0:06:26 > 0:06:28Oh!

0:06:28 > 0:06:32Daniela's also planning to modernise the mahogany washstand

0:06:32 > 0:06:35by transforming it into a sleek floating vanity unit.

0:06:35 > 0:06:39I'm liking that, if you can do that with the wash basin,

0:06:39 > 0:06:41that would be great...

0:06:41 > 0:06:43- Yeah, me too.- ..because it's an eyesore at the moment, really.

0:06:43 > 0:06:45Now, we don't like radiators.

0:06:45 > 0:06:49- No, we don't.- So, what I'm going to do, floor-to-ceiling,

0:06:49 > 0:06:50is a huge piece of artwork,

0:06:50 > 0:06:53so it's going to have light dusky pinks and a splash of yellow

0:06:53 > 0:06:55and some silver leaf as well.

0:06:55 > 0:06:57- Wonderful!- You're blown away.- I am.

0:06:57 > 0:06:59- She's blown away! - Feel quite emotional!

0:06:59 > 0:07:01Oh, no,

0:07:01 > 0:07:02- don't!- Calm down.

0:07:02 > 0:07:04I am, I'm thrilled.

0:07:04 > 0:07:06Next, it's the living room.

0:07:07 > 0:07:11From the brief, you said that you wanted imposing, elegant,

0:07:11 > 0:07:13with a slight Parisian edge.

0:07:13 > 0:07:16And that instantly drew me to these chic Parisian boutiques.

0:07:16 > 0:07:18- Yeah.- Where the sofa is at the moment,

0:07:18 > 0:07:20obviously once again you have a radiator.

0:07:20 > 0:07:22- Yeah, a big one, again.- Yeah. - A big, ugly radiator.

0:07:22 > 0:07:24Yeah. So what I wanted to do,

0:07:24 > 0:07:28which is kind of like, once again, quite a radical idea, perhaps,

0:07:28 > 0:07:30is do a curtained wall like this,

0:07:30 > 0:07:33and that's going to be down-lit by LEDs,

0:07:33 > 0:07:37- so it's going to be a really soft, warm light.- Very elegant.

0:07:37 > 0:07:40The alcoves here, they're going to be lit up in LEDs,

0:07:40 > 0:07:41so they're going to have shelves in there.

0:07:41 > 0:07:44That's somewhere you can put your books on and things like that,

0:07:44 > 0:07:48so it's all really smart and really well put together, hopefully.

0:07:48 > 0:07:51Daniela's presentation - wow, wow, wow!

0:07:51 > 0:07:54I especially like the fact where she'd say,

0:07:54 > 0:07:57"OK, I know that you like the Scandinavian look,

0:07:57 > 0:08:00"but I think it could be just a little bit too bare for your bedroom,

0:08:00 > 0:08:02"so I've taken it off into a slightly different direction."

0:08:02 > 0:08:04They followed her into that direction.

0:08:04 > 0:08:08She's very good at getting them involved in what she's created

0:08:08 > 0:08:10to the point the excitement is so much

0:08:10 > 0:08:12that she's absolutely won them over.

0:08:12 > 0:08:16But does that mean that the expectations are so high,

0:08:16 > 0:08:18if she doesn't pull this off,

0:08:18 > 0:08:22everyone is going to be incredibly disappointed?

0:08:22 > 0:08:23- Hello.- Hello.

0:08:23 > 0:08:26The clock has started on Daniela's 48 hours,

0:08:26 > 0:08:30and keen to get going, she's assembled her team.

0:08:30 > 0:08:32Ready to hear my plans?

0:08:32 > 0:08:34Wayne and Steve,

0:08:34 > 0:08:35make a sink unit box

0:08:35 > 0:08:39and then basically I've got a big piece of 6mm MDF

0:08:39 > 0:08:42and I'm going to do some artwork on it.

0:08:42 > 0:08:45And then that just needs some strip wood put round the edge.

0:08:45 > 0:08:47- Cool.- Cool.

0:08:49 > 0:08:53The pressure is on, as one room has to be finished tomorrow,

0:08:53 > 0:08:55so Daniela's tackling the bedroom first.

0:08:58 > 0:09:00But she's got a problem with her waterworks.

0:09:00 > 0:09:03Basically the sink is actually mounted on the unit.

0:09:03 > 0:09:06- Right.- So, if we take the unit away, there's nothing to support the sink.

0:09:06 > 0:09:08- You need a plumber.- Right, OK.

0:09:08 > 0:09:10- I don't have any money for a plumber...- OK.

0:09:10 > 0:09:16..so maybe we box around it and have a push opening door at the front.

0:09:16 > 0:09:21- Yeah.- OK.- Yeah.- Make it look as minimalistic and chic as possible.

0:09:21 > 0:09:24Yeah. All right, let's go.

0:09:28 > 0:09:32Our second designer returning is 44-year-old James,

0:09:32 > 0:09:34a marketing assistant from Kent.

0:09:35 > 0:09:38Last time, James impressed with his presentation...

0:09:38 > 0:09:42- Yeah, I like that. - ..and his quirky creativity.

0:09:44 > 0:09:47This is the sort of innovation that we're wanting from the designers -

0:09:47 > 0:09:49making it useful and practical.

0:09:49 > 0:09:52But his delegation and time management let him down.

0:09:52 > 0:09:57He has listened to the brief, it's just, it's not finished.

0:09:57 > 0:09:59Bit disappointing that we didn't finish, but, well,

0:09:59 > 0:10:03I've done as much as I can do in the time, so, yeah.

0:10:03 > 0:10:05So, judges, what has he got to improve from the last round?

0:10:05 > 0:10:07- Well, he's got to finish. - Yeah, that is it.

0:10:07 > 0:10:11- I mean...- We have taken a risk putting James into the next round,

0:10:11 > 0:10:14but we both believe that there's a bit of a spark with him

0:10:14 > 0:10:16and a really good design ability

0:10:16 > 0:10:19that we are hoping is going to flourish this round.

0:10:19 > 0:10:22What he's got to do is be confident in himself.

0:10:24 > 0:10:27James' challenge is to revamp two rooms

0:10:27 > 0:10:29for homeowner and new mum Jen,

0:10:29 > 0:10:32who wants a rustic farmhouse-style family home.

0:10:33 > 0:10:36The first room James is looking at is the bedroom.

0:10:37 > 0:10:39We like simple, we like neutral.

0:10:39 > 0:10:41We like calming environments.

0:10:41 > 0:10:44This room feels smaller than I imagined it.

0:10:44 > 0:10:45I like the rustic.

0:10:45 > 0:10:49The more thrown-together look.

0:10:49 > 0:10:51Probably a bit more romantic.

0:10:54 > 0:10:57The living room is so dark.

0:10:57 > 0:11:00If we can get some light in there, that's what we want.

0:11:00 > 0:11:04I would hate for anything to be busy, to be bold.

0:11:04 > 0:11:07You can't go far wrong with relaxed.

0:11:07 > 0:11:09- Hi, Jen.- Hi, James.

0:11:09 > 0:11:12First of all, the bedroom.

0:11:12 > 0:11:15I'm going to try and put a sliding door for the walk-in wardrobe.

0:11:15 > 0:11:18- We love sliding doors!- OK. Also, what I've tried to do in this is

0:11:18 > 0:11:21- add some ironwork to try and make it feel farmhouse-y.- Yeah.

0:11:21 > 0:11:24The colours will be grey, white and cream.

0:11:24 > 0:11:26- Lovely.- OK.- Very nice.

0:11:26 > 0:11:29The carpet's going to be replaced as well in a grey,

0:11:29 > 0:11:30slightly darker than this grey.

0:11:30 > 0:11:34And then this is the piece that makes the statement.

0:11:34 > 0:11:38So, what I want to do is basically make this dresser

0:11:38 > 0:11:40from two existing tables.

0:11:40 > 0:11:43Basically, got some oak for the middle section.

0:11:43 > 0:11:46- Yeah.- And the mirror above the dresser will be framed

0:11:46 > 0:11:48with the shepherd's hooks.

0:11:48 > 0:11:52So, basically it gives it a proper edgy-farmhouse feel.

0:11:52 > 0:11:55- Very unusual, yeah, ace. Brilliant.- OK, the lounge.

0:11:56 > 0:12:00So, basically, the bit above the picture rail would be the sage green

0:12:00 > 0:12:02and the chimney breast, as well.

0:12:02 > 0:12:04I'm going to make you a clock.

0:12:04 > 0:12:07It's basically a pear-drop shaped piece of wood which, I think,

0:12:07 > 0:12:10kind of works really nicely in terms of the feel of the room.

0:12:10 > 0:12:12- OK.- Flooring.

0:12:12 > 0:12:13Basically, we're going to sand the floor.

0:12:13 > 0:12:15I was thinking basically, if it was painted white...

0:12:15 > 0:12:18Yeah, yeah. The only thing is with white

0:12:18 > 0:12:19is I've got white up in the nursery...

0:12:19 > 0:12:24- OK.- ..and I don't think it looks as warm and as inviting

0:12:24 > 0:12:26and friendly, maybe, as what a warm oak would do.

0:12:26 > 0:12:29That's why I probably wanted to keep it more farmhouse, if we could.

0:12:29 > 0:12:30- OK. No, no, that's fine.- Yeah.

0:12:30 > 0:12:32- I thought I'd give you the choice. - Thank you.

0:12:32 > 0:12:34Thank you very much.

0:12:34 > 0:12:35James - what a change with him.

0:12:35 > 0:12:38He was so confident in that presentation.

0:12:38 > 0:12:40And also, the boards look really good.

0:12:40 > 0:12:43But I feel that sometimes he holds back because

0:12:43 > 0:12:47he wants to have that surprise when he unveils what he's done.

0:12:47 > 0:12:50If you remember the last time he did the presentation,

0:12:50 > 0:12:52it was very similar. But when we walked in,

0:12:52 > 0:12:55it just had that certain look that we hadn't actually imagined

0:12:55 > 0:12:58we were going to get, and that's what we liked about him.

0:12:58 > 0:13:02So, I think, and I'm hoping, when we actually go and see the rooms,

0:13:02 > 0:13:06he's going to have something with a bit of a twist there.

0:13:06 > 0:13:09James's 48 hours have begun.

0:13:09 > 0:13:12And like Daniela, he's planning to finish the bedroom first.

0:13:12 > 0:13:15You all right, guys? These are the plans for the bedroom.

0:13:15 > 0:13:17This one's the one that's got to be finished by tomorrow.

0:13:17 > 0:13:21Keen not to repeat past mistakes, he's delegating with confidence.

0:13:21 > 0:13:24Sliding door to be fitted onto the walk-in wardrobe.

0:13:24 > 0:13:26- OK.- And then this is the dresser.

0:13:26 > 0:13:28Then, it's just painting the walls.

0:13:28 > 0:13:30So, can we finish the bedroom by tomorrow?

0:13:30 > 0:13:32- Should get it done.- All right, brilliant.

0:13:32 > 0:13:34The fact that there's two rooms this time round,

0:13:34 > 0:13:38just means that I need to be a little bit more focused

0:13:38 > 0:13:41and basically make ideas more concise.

0:13:41 > 0:13:44After clearing both rooms,

0:13:44 > 0:13:47it's straight to work sanding in the lounge floor...

0:13:48 > 0:13:51..and getting rid of the old carpet in the bedroom,

0:13:51 > 0:13:53ready for the carpet fitters.

0:13:53 > 0:13:56- So, I wanted to kind of match the... - Yeah, yeah, yeah.

0:13:56 > 0:13:59And James is determined to get the bedroom finished on time.

0:13:59 > 0:14:02How long will that take to put down?

0:14:02 > 0:14:04- One hour.- One hour.

0:14:04 > 0:14:06We are on a timeframe, I think,

0:14:06 > 0:14:09so if you could make the hour... 50 minutes?

0:14:09 > 0:14:11- We'll do our best.- All right, brilliant. Thank you.

0:14:11 > 0:14:14I've asked them to make it as quick as possible,

0:14:14 > 0:14:18so if I pull an angry face, they might go a bit quicker.

0:14:18 > 0:14:20So, yeah, we'll see. We'll see what happens.

0:14:22 > 0:14:25With both designers off their starting blocks,

0:14:25 > 0:14:29tomorrow's deadline to have their bedrooms finished is inching

0:14:29 > 0:14:32ever nearer in this quaint, waterside village.

0:14:32 > 0:14:34Arts and Crafts architecture was all about the art of craft.

0:14:34 > 0:14:38Following the mid-19th century writings of John Ruskin,

0:14:38 > 0:14:40it celebrated the skill of the craftsmen

0:14:40 > 0:14:43as a riposte to industrialisation

0:14:43 > 0:14:46and mass production. You can see it here on the beautiful carving

0:14:46 > 0:14:48on the edge of the bargeboard and the finials.

0:14:48 > 0:14:52"A happy craftsman," said Ruskin, "made happy architecture."

0:14:55 > 0:14:58This style of architecture was all about authenticity and honesty,

0:14:58 > 0:15:02as opposed to the frippery and fakery of high-Victorian style.

0:15:02 > 0:15:05It was about showing off how a building was made,

0:15:05 > 0:15:06not covering it up,

0:15:06 > 0:15:09right down to the pegs that held the beams together.

0:15:19 > 0:15:22And behind this monochrome exterior,

0:15:22 > 0:15:26Daniela is showing off her interpretation of Scandi chic.

0:15:26 > 0:15:29This involves lots of white and natural textures.

0:15:29 > 0:15:32She's also getting crafty with a shop-bought lampshade,

0:15:32 > 0:15:34which hasn't broken the bank.

0:15:34 > 0:15:39This light is just a standard light from a superstore,

0:15:39 > 0:15:42and I think it was, like, 20 quid or something.

0:15:42 > 0:15:46And what I've done is I've made about 200 tassels altogether.

0:15:46 > 0:15:49Did some suede ones and string ones as well.

0:15:49 > 0:15:53And what I'm doing is I'm just going to customise the light with them.

0:15:53 > 0:15:56It cost about 20 quid for the tassels, so for 40 quid,

0:15:56 > 0:16:00you've got a light that no-one else has and it's, like, stunning.

0:16:02 > 0:16:05And this unique mixing of styles is reflected

0:16:05 > 0:16:07in Daniela's home in Essex.

0:16:09 > 0:16:11I really love retro furniture

0:16:11 > 0:16:16because I think it adds personality to my modernity.

0:16:16 > 0:16:19When I do upcycling, I don't do it in your usual way.

0:16:19 > 0:16:22I try to do it in quite a slick way. It's quite subtle.

0:16:29 > 0:16:32In Worsley, in James's rustic-inspired home,

0:16:32 > 0:16:35he's rising to the challenge of completing two rooms,

0:16:35 > 0:16:38and he's making good progress.

0:16:38 > 0:16:42Downstairs in the living room, the sanding is in full flow.

0:16:42 > 0:16:46Meanwhile, upstairs, the carpet has been laid.

0:16:46 > 0:16:47Yeah, it's nice.

0:16:48 > 0:16:52And the sliding wardrobe door... is sliding.

0:16:52 > 0:16:54- So, your door's on.- Cool. - I'll just check,

0:16:54 > 0:16:56are you happy with the way it all looks and all the rest of it?

0:16:56 > 0:16:59- Yeah, that looks perfect to me. - Perfect. OK.

0:16:59 > 0:17:00- Yeah, yeah.- Great.

0:17:02 > 0:17:07When it comes to personal taste at home, for James, less is more.

0:17:07 > 0:17:11My style is geometric shapes, clean lines.

0:17:11 > 0:17:13I like minimalistic approaches.

0:17:15 > 0:17:18I think that my strengths are bringing bespoke pieces

0:17:18 > 0:17:20that will stand out and make the room unique.

0:17:22 > 0:17:25I like the fact that when I've decorated a room,

0:17:25 > 0:17:26there is kind of a piece of me left in there.

0:17:29 > 0:17:30Back in Worsley,

0:17:30 > 0:17:33James is working hard to communicate with his team

0:17:33 > 0:17:36and manage his time well.

0:17:36 > 0:17:38Where are we going to be by the end of the day?

0:17:38 > 0:17:41Ideally, I want to get the first coat of paint on the walls.

0:17:41 > 0:17:44So, they'll be one coat on all walls by the end of play?

0:17:44 > 0:17:46- Yeah, yeah.- All right, cool. - On schedule.

0:17:46 > 0:17:50There's definitely something to be said about lots of communication.

0:17:50 > 0:17:52That way, you kind of know what's happening

0:17:52 > 0:17:54and you know where you're going to be

0:17:54 > 0:17:56and you don't leave it to the last minute, so, yeah.

0:17:56 > 0:17:58Yeah, it's all good.

0:17:58 > 0:18:02Kelly, we're asking for a huge leap from what he did last time.

0:18:02 > 0:18:07But what I'm hoping is that his creativity isn't left behind because

0:18:07 > 0:18:10he's panicking too much to try and get those rooms finished.

0:18:10 > 0:18:12And I'm really looking forward to seeing if he can do it.

0:18:12 > 0:18:13Fingers crossed.

0:18:19 > 0:18:21With the sanding done in the living room...

0:18:21 > 0:18:25- It looks really nice. - ..the varnish can go on.

0:18:25 > 0:18:27End of day one, and the last project

0:18:27 > 0:18:30was nowhere near as accomplished as today.

0:18:30 > 0:18:33Time management and delegation worked well today.

0:18:33 > 0:18:36But it's not so smooth over at Daniela's.

0:18:36 > 0:18:39She's got no plumber and she's been forced to abandon her design

0:18:39 > 0:18:41for a floating vanity unit,

0:18:41 > 0:18:44so she's come up with an alternative solution.

0:18:44 > 0:18:46What we're going to do is we're going to neatly box it in,

0:18:46 > 0:18:50still keep that really slick look, plywood on the top.

0:18:50 > 0:18:53And we're just going to have a little access hatch to go in there,

0:18:53 > 0:18:55so we can access the plumbing.

0:18:56 > 0:18:59Things haven't gone quite to plan for Daniela,

0:18:59 > 0:19:00and she still has lots to do.

0:19:00 > 0:19:03Tomorrow, we've got to finish the bedroom.

0:19:03 > 0:19:06Priority is getting a coat of paint on the walls,

0:19:06 > 0:19:08getting the wallpaper up.

0:19:08 > 0:19:12Making the side tables, finishing the sink.

0:19:12 > 0:19:13It's the end of the first day.

0:19:13 > 0:19:17Both James and Daniela have got a lot of work to do if the first

0:19:17 > 0:19:20of their two rooms is to be ready for the judges to see tomorrow.

0:19:22 > 0:19:26And with day one over, the designers touch base to compare notes.

0:19:26 > 0:19:29- Hiya.- How you getting on? - Not too bad. Not too bad.

0:19:29 > 0:19:31- Yourself?- Yeah? Yeah, good.

0:19:31 > 0:19:32So, second round.

0:19:32 > 0:19:35Oh, don't.

0:19:35 > 0:19:37- How you coping? - Yeah, I'm really excited.

0:19:37 > 0:19:40I felt like almost the first round was like a practice.

0:19:40 > 0:19:42- Yeah.- And I'm hoping to up my game a little bit.

0:19:42 > 0:19:44- We've got to finish it by tomorrow now, haven't we?- Yeah.

0:19:44 > 0:19:47- The game's on. - The game is on.- Good luck.

0:19:47 > 0:19:49Good luck to you, too.

0:19:49 > 0:19:51You're going to need it.

0:20:01 > 0:20:02It's the start of day two,

0:20:02 > 0:20:06and today, both designers must finish their first room.

0:20:06 > 0:20:09- Morning, guys.- Morning.- Morning. I'm going to do the ceiling first

0:20:09 > 0:20:11and then jump straight back onto the walls.

0:20:11 > 0:20:14James is confidently forging ahead.

0:20:14 > 0:20:15- Blinds will need to go up.- OK.

0:20:15 > 0:20:18Curtain pole needs to go back up.

0:20:18 > 0:20:20Mirror needs to go on the wall, as well.

0:20:20 > 0:20:22- Yeah.- So, I'll start doing your desk.

0:20:22 > 0:20:24OK. Approximate timeframe on that getting together?

0:20:24 > 0:20:26- Putting together?- I don't know.

0:20:26 > 0:20:29- Shouldn't take more than an hour, so...- Cool. All right, thank you.

0:20:29 > 0:20:30The pressure's on.

0:20:30 > 0:20:34We just need to get focused today and meet the deadline.

0:20:36 > 0:20:39But Daniela is definitely feeling the pressure.

0:20:39 > 0:20:42- Good morning.- Morning, hi. - You all right?

0:20:42 > 0:20:45Had lots of things keeping me awake last night.

0:20:45 > 0:20:48You know, just worrying about kind of...

0:20:48 > 0:20:50You know, how we were going to do things in time

0:20:50 > 0:20:53and to the standard that I would like.

0:20:53 > 0:20:54First thing for Daniela,

0:20:54 > 0:20:58she's getting creative with some MDF to make her original artwork,

0:20:58 > 0:21:02which will also double up as a bespoke radiator cover.

0:21:02 > 0:21:03Jo, the decorator,

0:21:03 > 0:21:07gave me some very valuable advice last time about painting

0:21:07 > 0:21:09and how you're supposed to do things.

0:21:09 > 0:21:12But actually I'm going to go against everything she says for this one

0:21:12 > 0:21:15because it's an expressive art piece.

0:21:15 > 0:21:17It's all going to be very tonal.

0:21:17 > 0:21:19I want it to be really smudgy, really messy.

0:21:19 > 0:21:21It's all about the texture with this one.

0:21:21 > 0:21:24She's getting stuck in.

0:21:24 > 0:21:27I've got some leftover filler

0:21:27 > 0:21:32and I'm just slapping it on to create some texture.

0:21:32 > 0:21:34And it's messy work.

0:21:36 > 0:21:37Oh!

0:21:37 > 0:21:39SHE LAUGHS

0:21:42 > 0:21:44This is expressive. I'm just doing what feels right.

0:21:44 > 0:21:46I'm kind of layering it.

0:21:46 > 0:21:48I am totally making it up as I go along,

0:21:48 > 0:21:50but I do this a lot, I make art for my home

0:21:50 > 0:21:53and they always work out all right in the end.

0:21:59 > 0:22:03James is also putting his creative abilities to the test

0:22:03 > 0:22:05in his rustic farmhouse-themed home.

0:22:05 > 0:22:07This is the wild flower feature.

0:22:07 > 0:22:12The homeowner specified kind of a farmhouse-y, magazine style.

0:22:12 > 0:22:15So, this was just an idea that I thought of when I saw the wallpaper.

0:22:15 > 0:22:17I thought, "Oh, that's really nice."

0:22:17 > 0:22:18I haven't done this before,

0:22:18 > 0:22:21but I thought this would be quite a unique way of

0:22:21 > 0:22:23basically having a feature on the wall.

0:22:23 > 0:22:25Anybody can just stick up some wallpaper.

0:22:25 > 0:22:28It's just a bit more creative, I guess.

0:22:28 > 0:22:30The end effect should be worthwhile.

0:22:30 > 0:22:32It's the little things that are going to enhance the room,

0:22:32 > 0:22:34so I'm hoping this is one of those little things

0:22:34 > 0:22:37that has been worth the time it's taken me to cut out.

0:22:43 > 0:22:47James is putting his own stamp on, and pinning his hopes on,

0:22:47 > 0:22:49some shop-bought furniture.

0:22:49 > 0:22:52I got a box and an ottoman that are upholstered at the top,

0:22:52 > 0:22:54so they have kind of foam in them.

0:22:54 > 0:22:57The staple gun forms the indentation

0:22:57 > 0:23:00and then I have little studs that I'm going to glue

0:23:00 > 0:23:01into the indentation.

0:23:01 > 0:23:06This is a quick and effective way of getting a pin-tuck effect.

0:23:08 > 0:23:11The trunk itself was under £20, so, yeah,

0:23:11 > 0:23:13I think it's quite a nice finish.

0:23:13 > 0:23:15It's nice to kind of add the personal touches

0:23:15 > 0:23:19and kind of upcycle, or change things in whichever way you can.

0:23:19 > 0:23:22Judges Kelly and Dan are keen to check up on James's progress.

0:23:22 > 0:23:24- James.- Hi. You all right?

0:23:24 > 0:23:26Do you feel confident about the scheme

0:23:26 > 0:23:28and how you've planned it this time?

0:23:28 > 0:23:29Yes. Yes.

0:23:29 > 0:23:32I learned lessons from kind of not finishing last time.

0:23:32 > 0:23:36And, you know, just in terms of delegation and budget management,

0:23:36 > 0:23:40I think I've corrected those mistakes this time round.

0:23:40 > 0:23:43What have you got that you feel really proud of in

0:23:43 > 0:23:45the projects you're doing in the two rooms?

0:23:45 > 0:23:47In the bedroom itself,

0:23:47 > 0:23:50I've designed a little vanity table dresser.

0:23:50 > 0:23:53And then downstairs, I'm going to do a clock.

0:23:53 > 0:23:55It's interesting because your presentation,

0:23:55 > 0:23:57you are really confident this time.

0:23:57 > 0:24:00- Yeah.- But for me, the presentation boards are beautiful,

0:24:00 > 0:24:03but you never show any pieces that people are going to have,

0:24:03 > 0:24:05so a lot of it's left to mystery.

0:24:05 > 0:24:07Is that done on purpose?

0:24:07 > 0:24:09There is an element of that.

0:24:09 > 0:24:11LAUGHTER

0:24:11 > 0:24:12He's holding something back.

0:24:12 > 0:24:14I think he wants to give us a bit of a surprise

0:24:14 > 0:24:16because when you mentioned the clock

0:24:16 > 0:24:18being a bit of a star on your project,

0:24:18 > 0:24:20when you actually see it on the board,

0:24:20 > 0:24:22it's just this tiny little thing hiding in the corner,

0:24:22 > 0:24:26so that is going to turn out to be something that's really interesting.

0:24:26 > 0:24:30Kelly, you know, we took a bit of a risk letting James through into

0:24:30 > 0:24:34the next round, but I've got a hint we are doing the right thing.

0:24:34 > 0:24:36100%. 100%. He's got something.

0:24:36 > 0:24:38I knew he had something, and he's proven it.

0:24:38 > 0:24:41- So, all those little details... - But it's all secrets.

0:24:41 > 0:24:43I'm proving it to myself more than anybody else.

0:24:43 > 0:24:46I didn't finish the last room, I'm kind of...

0:24:46 > 0:24:49You know, I need to prove to myself that I can get this done.

0:24:53 > 0:24:56Making their own impression in the early 20th century,

0:24:56 > 0:24:59the architects of our houses understood a thing or two

0:24:59 > 0:25:03about showing off. Edwardian houses really knew how to make an entrance.

0:25:03 > 0:25:05They were usually built on the edge of town on cheap farmland,

0:25:05 > 0:25:08so they had more elbow room to spread themselves out with great

0:25:08 > 0:25:13big porches and entrances like this one, topped with a Tudor arch,

0:25:13 > 0:25:16with some beautiful stained-glass windows behind,

0:25:16 > 0:25:19all designed in a kind of slightly Art Nouveau style.

0:25:28 > 0:25:30For Daniela, the pressure is mounting.

0:25:30 > 0:25:33Her bedroom must be completed later today.

0:25:33 > 0:25:36OK. All right.

0:25:36 > 0:25:40And her bespoke vanity unit is still causing her issues.

0:25:40 > 0:25:42What varnish would you suggest?

0:25:42 > 0:25:44Because I want something that's going to bring out the grain,

0:25:44 > 0:25:47but is still matt. I don't really want it shiny.

0:25:47 > 0:25:49You need something that's waterproof obviously,

0:25:49 > 0:25:52cos that's the main thing, to actually waterproof this wood.

0:25:52 > 0:25:53So, matt isn't waterproof?

0:25:53 > 0:25:55- It's got to be water-sealed, hasn't it?- Yeah.

0:25:55 > 0:25:58So, there we are. Steve, the builder, brought to my attention

0:25:58 > 0:26:00that the vanity worktop next to the sink, which is plywood,

0:26:00 > 0:26:04needs to be, like, watertight, basically

0:26:04 > 0:26:06because it's obviously next to a sink.

0:26:06 > 0:26:07I'm freaking out now.

0:26:07 > 0:26:09These are rookie mistakes, here.

0:26:09 > 0:26:11So, the mirror...

0:26:11 > 0:26:13I'm going to say it's going there.

0:26:13 > 0:26:15And is there a curtain on this wall?

0:26:15 > 0:26:17It is, yeah. Floor-to-ceiling curtain.

0:26:17 > 0:26:20Wall-to-wall curtain.

0:26:20 > 0:26:24Keen to see how Daniela's getting along, the judges pay her a visit.

0:26:24 > 0:26:28Now, it isn't Scandinavian, which is what they were looking for,

0:26:28 > 0:26:29but you've convinced them cleverly.

0:26:29 > 0:26:31With this... The grandeur of this house,

0:26:31 > 0:26:33I just didn't want to go down that stark Scandinavian route.

0:26:33 > 0:26:36I wanted it a bit more luxurious, a bit more peaceful.

0:26:36 > 0:26:37So, you've gone quite romantic, actually.

0:26:37 > 0:26:40- I have gone quite romantic.- I mean, Scandinavian is all quite

0:26:40 > 0:26:42very hard lines and sort of primary colours.

0:26:42 > 0:26:44- Yes, exactly.- I'm not picking that up in here, at all.

0:26:44 > 0:26:46- No, no.- Can you deliver what you presented?- I hope so.

0:26:46 > 0:26:49I hope so. I can only hope and try my hardest.

0:26:51 > 0:26:56My concern is that Daniela has created a dream of a scheme, but...

0:26:56 > 0:26:57Is she going to deliver?

0:26:57 > 0:26:59Is she going to be the one who's not going to finish?

0:26:59 > 0:27:02Is she going to be the one who's going to disappoint?

0:27:02 > 0:27:04Because she has put everything into that.

0:27:04 > 0:27:09You're completely ensconced in this amazing experience in design.

0:27:09 > 0:27:12Mm. One little bit missing, we're going to be disappointed.

0:27:17 > 0:27:19As the rooms are all slightly different,

0:27:19 > 0:27:23the judges want both the designers to demonstrate their creativity

0:27:23 > 0:27:25on a level playing field.

0:27:25 > 0:27:29So, Daniela and James are being given an identical surprise item

0:27:29 > 0:27:32which they must artistically incorporate

0:27:32 > 0:27:34into either of their rooms.

0:27:34 > 0:27:37Hello, Daniela. You know it's that moment, don't you?

0:27:37 > 0:27:39The wonderful moment of the creative challenge.

0:27:39 > 0:27:42- OK.- Because I realise you've got so much spare time on your hands.

0:27:42 > 0:27:45- I have loads.- You don't have to use all of them, you can use one,

0:27:45 > 0:27:49two, three, four, five, and you can use the tray.

0:27:49 > 0:27:52You CAN do anything you want with this.

0:27:52 > 0:27:55- A breeze. Yeah.- It's closed. - Quite a tricky one, this.

0:27:57 > 0:28:00I have no idea what I'm going to do.

0:28:00 > 0:28:02I'm going to have to sleep on this one,

0:28:02 > 0:28:04or at least think about it for a little while.

0:28:04 > 0:28:07I like the ribbing of the cans and I like the silver.

0:28:07 > 0:28:12So, I have no clue, but I'm sure it'll be wonderful.

0:28:14 > 0:28:17The creative challenge will have to wait for Daniela as

0:28:17 > 0:28:22the clock is ticking and she really needs to complete that bedroom.

0:28:22 > 0:28:24I'm just finishing off my art piece.

0:28:24 > 0:28:27And I think that's it now.

0:28:27 > 0:28:29I'm really happy. I've just put enough silver on.

0:28:29 > 0:28:32I don't want overdo it. It's not some sort of glitzy piece.

0:28:39 > 0:28:42James is putting his bedroom plans into action,

0:28:42 > 0:28:45which all hinge around his statement piece -

0:28:45 > 0:28:47the bespoke dressing table.

0:28:47 > 0:28:50Basically, what I would like to do is basically have

0:28:50 > 0:28:52this middle section of oak...

0:28:52 > 0:28:56- Right.- ..untreated, basically set in between the two.

0:28:56 > 0:28:59- Oh, I see.- So, it forms like a desk.

0:28:59 > 0:29:03- So, it's... That's in the middle there, is it?- Uh-huh.- OK.

0:29:10 > 0:29:13The table at present, erm...

0:29:13 > 0:29:16Not quite, it doesn't look quite right.

0:29:16 > 0:29:19It's not the vision that I had in my head. It looks a bit...

0:29:19 > 0:29:22a little bit off-balance. It doesn't look sturdy enough,

0:29:22 > 0:29:26so there's going to be a few adjustments made.

0:29:26 > 0:29:28Basically, what's going to happen is we're going to make a back

0:29:28 > 0:29:31for the table. That way, it makes it more rigid.

0:29:38 > 0:29:39Ten minutes to go. Just silly me

0:29:39 > 0:29:41forgot that we had to put the blind in, still.

0:29:41 > 0:29:44The builder reckons that that's going to take about ten minutes,

0:29:44 > 0:29:46so just on the buzzer, I think.

0:29:47 > 0:29:52As the first designer to start, Daniela's time is ticking away.

0:29:54 > 0:29:57And her deadline is rapidly approaching.

0:29:57 > 0:29:58Yeah, that's all done.

0:29:58 > 0:30:00Lovely. Well done. Right.

0:30:00 > 0:30:04So, she's ensuring that her room is styled to perfection.

0:30:05 > 0:30:07Done.

0:30:07 > 0:30:09Daniela's time is now up.

0:30:09 > 0:30:12I am so happy with that room.

0:30:12 > 0:30:14You know, in comparison to my mood board,

0:30:14 > 0:30:18I just think it's even lovelier. In my opinion, anyway.

0:30:19 > 0:30:22Daniela's brief was to create a cool,

0:30:22 > 0:30:24light and modern Scandi-style bedroom.

0:30:25 > 0:30:28Yesterday, it was drab and uninspiring,

0:30:28 > 0:30:31full of mismatched florals, dominating the room.

0:30:33 > 0:30:37Now, it has the unmistakable air of modern chic.

0:30:43 > 0:30:46Daniela's clean, white and minimal theme

0:30:46 > 0:30:48is enhanced by her hand-painted artwork

0:30:48 > 0:30:50and striking marble effect wallpaper.

0:30:53 > 0:30:57Her remodelled basin and vanity unit blends in with the sleek scheme.

0:30:59 > 0:31:02And she's cleverly combined different textures

0:31:02 > 0:31:04to pull the final look together.

0:31:07 > 0:31:09Wowzer!

0:31:09 > 0:31:13It's a major, big impact when you come in. It's so white.

0:31:13 > 0:31:14It's white, on white, on white.

0:31:14 > 0:31:16But on top of that, there's some amazing texture.

0:31:16 > 0:31:18Oh, I love that painting!

0:31:18 > 0:31:20Isn't it good? What's clever, though,

0:31:20 > 0:31:25she's also covered the windows with that full-on white...

0:31:25 > 0:31:27I almost want to say muslin curtain, isn't it?

0:31:27 > 0:31:28I love the muslin curtain,

0:31:28 > 0:31:31but I could live without the bit behind the sink.

0:31:31 > 0:31:34Turning to the boxing around the vanity unit,

0:31:34 > 0:31:36clever that it is with this lovely stripe.

0:31:36 > 0:31:38- Yeah, it's lovely, that. - Like that detail.- Yeah, love it.

0:31:38 > 0:31:40My concerns about Daniela, though, is...

0:31:40 > 0:31:44is this all just style over substance?

0:31:44 > 0:31:45It looks great.

0:31:45 > 0:31:48But if you were actually living in this bedroom

0:31:48 > 0:31:50and you wanted to put your toothpaste in the corner here,

0:31:50 > 0:31:52it's going to look like a mess.

0:31:52 > 0:31:55This is not going to last five minutes.

0:31:55 > 0:31:57You know, some bloke is going to throw his dirty old boxer shorts

0:31:57 > 0:32:01- into that and it's not going to look good.- Not in my house.

0:32:02 > 0:32:05Daniela has been working to the homeowner's brief.

0:32:05 > 0:32:09And John and Julie's opinion will be taken into consideration by

0:32:09 > 0:32:12the judges when they make their final decision.

0:32:12 > 0:32:14Wow!

0:32:14 > 0:32:17Goodness me. Love that wall. That is fantastic.

0:32:17 > 0:32:19- I do!- That is spot-on.

0:32:19 > 0:32:21We'll have to up our game.

0:32:21 > 0:32:24Yes, I know. I'm going to get some silk pyjamas now, or something!

0:32:24 > 0:32:26Does anything not sit right in the room?

0:32:26 > 0:32:28Anything you're not quite sure of?

0:32:28 > 0:32:30I'll probably have to get used to this.

0:32:30 > 0:32:32- That's your radiator cover. - Yeah, yeah.

0:32:32 > 0:32:34Doesn't look like a radiator cover, but it is.

0:32:34 > 0:32:38I got the impression she was going to hang it from maybe the picture rail

0:32:38 > 0:32:40or from the ceiling, rather than it just being propped up.

0:32:40 > 0:32:43- I think propping's all the rage. - John doesn't do all the rage.

0:32:43 > 0:32:48No. No, I haven't done all the rage since about 1977, I don't think.

0:32:48 > 0:32:52Definitely got that cool theme that we asked for, in fairness.

0:32:52 > 0:32:54Scandi-style? You wanted a bit of Scandi-style.

0:32:54 > 0:32:57Yeah, a bit Scandi. Yeah, yeah.

0:32:59 > 0:33:01I'm feeling anxious because there's only an hour left

0:33:01 > 0:33:05and I know how quick an hour goes, but the room is pretty much done.

0:33:05 > 0:33:07Anxious, but positive.

0:33:09 > 0:33:13Time's about to be called on James, but will his room be finished?

0:33:15 > 0:33:16Oh!

0:33:16 > 0:33:19He's cleverly incorporating mirrors into his scheme,

0:33:19 > 0:33:21which will create an illusion of space

0:33:21 > 0:33:24to make the room look bigger and brighter.

0:33:24 > 0:33:26James adds his final touches.

0:33:27 > 0:33:29He finesses the bed

0:33:29 > 0:33:31and styles the curtains.

0:33:31 > 0:33:33His time is up.

0:33:35 > 0:33:38I don't know if I've done enough to impress the judges.

0:33:38 > 0:33:41I think I've done little key things to kind of hopefully catch their eye

0:33:41 > 0:33:43and for things to stand out.

0:33:43 > 0:33:45And we'll see, we'll see.

0:33:45 > 0:33:48I don't know. I was really chuffed that I finished the room.

0:33:48 > 0:33:52James's brief was to design a relaxed and romantic retreat

0:33:52 > 0:33:54with a feel of all things rustic.

0:33:55 > 0:33:59Yesterday, the bedroom was dark and tired,

0:33:59 > 0:34:01lacking in any personality.

0:34:05 > 0:34:08Now, it has a serene and contemporary edge.

0:34:09 > 0:34:13With a sleek sliding entrance to the dressing room beyond.

0:34:15 > 0:34:17Rustic touches give the room the farmhouse feel

0:34:17 > 0:34:19the homeowner was after.

0:34:20 > 0:34:24All set off by James's bespoke statement-piece dresser.

0:34:26 > 0:34:30And the clever combination of different greys creates a striking,

0:34:30 > 0:34:31but tranquil feel.

0:34:33 > 0:34:34Wow!

0:34:37 > 0:34:40So, they asked for homely, friendly.

0:34:40 > 0:34:44- And I think we're getting that feel, aren't we?- Yeah.- Yeah.

0:34:44 > 0:34:47I love the colour of the walls, I love the existing bed.

0:34:47 > 0:34:49I love the cushions on the bed, I think.

0:34:49 > 0:34:51I love that sort of cable knit.

0:34:51 > 0:34:53I think that's all beautiful.

0:34:53 > 0:34:57I mean, that dressing table is really genius.

0:34:57 > 0:35:00He's found two Chinese console tables,

0:35:00 > 0:35:02he's put marble on the top and he's connected it.

0:35:02 > 0:35:04He's found an old piece of mirror.

0:35:04 > 0:35:05- And he's connected it up. - And it's very nice.

0:35:05 > 0:35:09- Yes.- I think what he's done on the wall there is very creative.

0:35:09 > 0:35:10Do you like that? I quite like that.

0:35:10 > 0:35:13I think it's clever. Cutting it out and gluing it on the wall,

0:35:13 > 0:35:15it's very feminine. Do you know,

0:35:15 > 0:35:18the feeling in this room is really lovely,

0:35:18 > 0:35:20and that's what the homeowner asked for.

0:35:20 > 0:35:24They wanted something comfortable and homely, and he's nailed it.

0:35:24 > 0:35:25He's done the brief.

0:35:25 > 0:35:28Absolutely. I look at this and I just want to lie down.

0:35:28 > 0:35:30I feel very at ease and calm in here.

0:35:30 > 0:35:33And he has... He has answered the brief.

0:35:37 > 0:35:39Come on through, Jen.

0:35:39 > 0:35:41Oh, wow!

0:35:41 > 0:35:42Oh, this is lovely.

0:35:44 > 0:35:45Really like this.

0:35:45 > 0:35:49To me, it looks sophisticated, but that kind of rugged,

0:35:49 > 0:35:51English-country-farmhouse thing.

0:35:51 > 0:35:53That's kind of gone. Do you miss that?

0:35:53 > 0:35:54No, to be fair...

0:35:54 > 0:35:57Because like see you've got these sheer curtains here,

0:35:57 > 0:35:59they make it feel a little bit more cosy and inviting.

0:35:59 > 0:36:01- Softening.- Softer. You know,

0:36:01 > 0:36:04whereas if you would have took them away and things,

0:36:04 > 0:36:06it could have felt a little bit more harder, but it doesn't.

0:36:06 > 0:36:08It's all really working together.

0:36:08 > 0:36:09And, OK, it's not as rustic,

0:36:09 > 0:36:12but you've got like little gems like this

0:36:12 > 0:36:14that help to just bring in a bit of charm.

0:36:14 > 0:36:18And he promised me I would like the table, and it's gorgeous.

0:36:18 > 0:36:21- Very nice.- So, good! Thumbs up. - Very good.

0:36:21 > 0:36:23Nothing wrong with it at all? Nothing at all?

0:36:23 > 0:36:25- Nothing!- Nothing?- No! No, no, it's lovely.

0:36:30 > 0:36:32Now, Daniela and James may have finished one room,

0:36:32 > 0:36:35but there's a whole other room to do if they are to stand a chance of

0:36:35 > 0:36:37getting through to the semifinals.

0:36:39 > 0:36:43So, it's full steam ahead, as their second room will be revealed

0:36:43 > 0:36:45and judged tomorrow.

0:36:45 > 0:36:48Buoyed up by successfully completing one room,

0:36:48 > 0:36:51James now turns his attention to the living room.

0:36:51 > 0:36:56There's another coat to go on the floor before end of play today.

0:36:56 > 0:36:59Yeah, I think we're on schedule for this room.

0:37:00 > 0:37:04With his sage-green chimney breast, complementing his muted walls,

0:37:04 > 0:37:06James's painting is progressing well.

0:37:08 > 0:37:11However, it's a very different matter over at Daniela's,

0:37:11 > 0:37:13who's not happy with her wall colour.

0:37:13 > 0:37:16I just don't think it's a very nice colour. I'm just not happy with it.

0:37:16 > 0:37:20I think I'm going to have to look at paint colours again,

0:37:20 > 0:37:23have a think on it. Maybe go with it.

0:37:23 > 0:37:26Maybe I'll come in tomorrow and it'll be a different light in here

0:37:26 > 0:37:29and it'll have dried completely and I'll feel completely differently.

0:37:35 > 0:37:37It's the end of the day,

0:37:37 > 0:37:41and both designers have got their eyes fixed firmly on the prize.

0:37:42 > 0:37:44Judges have seen our first rooms.

0:37:44 > 0:37:46- Yeah.- I mean, scary or what? - I know, tell me about it.

0:37:46 > 0:37:48- This is it now, isn't it?- Yeah.

0:37:48 > 0:37:50For me, it was more about getting the room finished.

0:37:50 > 0:37:52- Yeah.- That was kind of the big thing for me.

0:37:52 > 0:37:54- Yeah.- It was definitely a confidence booster.

0:37:54 > 0:37:56It's definitely best man wins, isn't it?

0:37:56 > 0:37:58- Yeah, it will be best man wins. - Yeah.- Best MAN wins.

0:37:58 > 0:38:01Best man... Yeah. Best man...

0:38:01 > 0:38:03Yeah, right.

0:38:18 > 0:38:21Day three, and the gloves are well and truly off.

0:38:21 > 0:38:24One room down, and these two are getting super-competitive.

0:38:24 > 0:38:26But there's only room for one in the semifinals.

0:38:26 > 0:38:30And Worsley's wet weather isn't going to dampen James' spirits

0:38:30 > 0:38:33- this morning. - Morning, guys.- Morning.- Hello.

0:38:33 > 0:38:35Oh, last day!

0:38:35 > 0:38:37The plan is to kind of just...

0:38:37 > 0:38:41Yeah, get the room finished to the best standard that we can.

0:38:41 > 0:38:43Hopefully, it will be enough.

0:38:45 > 0:38:47But it's a soggy start for Daniela.

0:38:47 > 0:38:50I am feeling completely shot to pieces.

0:38:50 > 0:38:54Yeah, didn't... Once again, didn't get much sleep last night.

0:38:54 > 0:38:57I know that I've got to change paint colours today and things like that.

0:38:57 > 0:38:59I'm feeling really nervous.

0:38:59 > 0:39:01- Good morning.- Morning, hi.

0:39:01 > 0:39:03- All right?- Oh, don't.

0:39:03 > 0:39:06Don't give me that sad face.

0:39:06 > 0:39:08That's the sad face of change.

0:39:08 > 0:39:10- It may be.- Right, OK.

0:39:10 > 0:39:14- The issue is time.- Yeah.- We've got so much to do on woodwork

0:39:14 > 0:39:16and trying to create everything else that you want,

0:39:16 > 0:39:18so it is a bit of an issue.

0:39:18 > 0:39:20I 100% get what you're saying.

0:39:20 > 0:39:21- Yeah.- It's making me think...

0:39:21 > 0:39:23Especially now I've come in now and I'm like...

0:39:23 > 0:39:28- I've had some sleep. I'm going to think about it.- Yeah.

0:39:28 > 0:39:29It's your space.

0:39:32 > 0:39:34Right.

0:39:34 > 0:39:35I've made a decision.

0:39:37 > 0:39:39- Hopefully, it's in our favour. - It actually is.- OK.

0:39:39 > 0:39:41It actually is. I'm going to keep the paint colour.

0:39:41 > 0:39:43- Great, fantastic.- Yeah.

0:39:45 > 0:39:47With the decorating back on track,

0:39:47 > 0:39:52Daniela turns her attention to the creative challenge.

0:39:52 > 0:39:54How easy are these to cut? Do you know?

0:39:54 > 0:39:57- Yeah.- Yeah, easy. Because what my idea is...

0:39:57 > 0:40:01- Do a drawing for me because...- Yeah. Right, so, square vase.

0:40:01 > 0:40:03- Like that.- Yeah.

0:40:03 > 0:40:06And so, you'd cut the tin can down the middle and you'd flatten it out.

0:40:06 > 0:40:08Just stripping the metal and creating...

0:40:08 > 0:40:09So, you've got some sheets of it...

0:40:09 > 0:40:12- Yeah.- ..to do something with. - Yeah. Thank you.

0:40:14 > 0:40:19Daniela's got a CANNY design plan to make an alternative flowerpot

0:40:19 > 0:40:22using MDF and the flattened metal tins.

0:40:23 > 0:40:25It's the best I could come up with.

0:40:27 > 0:40:30James is also adopting a CAN-DO attitude.

0:40:31 > 0:40:33OK, so, last night I gave it some thought

0:40:33 > 0:40:37and I decided what I'm going to do is I'm basically going to

0:40:37 > 0:40:40cover the tins in some string.

0:40:40 > 0:40:44So, basically I'm going to wrap it around like this

0:40:44 > 0:40:46and have three different heights

0:40:46 > 0:40:49and I'm going to use them as vases for artificial dried flowers.

0:40:49 > 0:40:52And I'll put them somewhere in the lounge.

0:40:57 > 0:41:00Next, James is sticking with his tried-and-tested idea

0:41:00 > 0:41:01of cut-out wallpaper.

0:41:01 > 0:41:03This will be a bit tricky.

0:41:03 > 0:41:05It's a calm exterior, but underneath the water,

0:41:05 > 0:41:09the legs are flapping away. "Have I done enough?" I guess,

0:41:09 > 0:41:12is the question that I'm asking myself now.

0:41:13 > 0:41:15I think it looks all right. Looks OK.

0:41:20 > 0:41:21So, judges, final day.

0:41:21 > 0:41:25Clock's ticking. And, stop press, James has finished a room.

0:41:25 > 0:41:28How do you think he's going to cope with another room?

0:41:28 > 0:41:31Well, I think the next room is meant to be his jewel in the crown.

0:41:31 > 0:41:34And this first one was just a little bit of a build-up,

0:41:34 > 0:41:35so I'm hoping that this special moment

0:41:35 > 0:41:37which we're both looking forward to

0:41:37 > 0:41:39is actually going to be there.

0:41:39 > 0:41:41And has all gone to plan for Daniela?

0:41:41 > 0:41:43Well, I'm sort of slightly concerned, actually.

0:41:43 > 0:41:45- I know.- Really, are you?

0:41:45 > 0:41:47Yeah, no, I am a little bit because...

0:41:47 > 0:41:51I think I've been slightly thrown by James and I was expecting

0:41:51 > 0:41:53so much that I've sort of come away thinking

0:41:53 > 0:41:56maybe we've had everything from Daniela

0:41:56 > 0:41:58and the second room isn't going to be as good.

0:41:58 > 0:42:01Oh, I get you. So, you're saying he's holding back because

0:42:01 > 0:42:03- it's going to be a big surprise next time.- Yeah.

0:42:03 > 0:42:05- And she's just actually... - She's given everything.

0:42:05 > 0:42:07Given it all and it can't be any better than that.

0:42:07 > 0:42:09So, I'm so confused right now.

0:42:09 > 0:42:12You know, I'm normally very clear of what I'm thinking

0:42:12 > 0:42:15and where it's going to go and now I'm completely flummoxed

0:42:15 > 0:42:18and I don't know which way it's going to go.

0:42:18 > 0:42:20With that deadline inching ever nearer,

0:42:20 > 0:42:23Daniela has still got a lot of work left to do.

0:42:23 > 0:42:26This is my curtain wall that I put on my mood board.

0:42:26 > 0:42:28And it'll be curtains for her

0:42:28 > 0:42:31if she doesn't complete that Parisian boutique feature wall

0:42:31 > 0:42:35with the LED lights that she promised the homeowners.

0:42:35 > 0:42:39I don't know, it's very atmospheric, I think, once you put it up there.

0:42:39 > 0:42:43But there's a problem. There aren't enough strips for the alcoves.

0:42:43 > 0:42:47The design in here is going to be affected because I wanted them to be

0:42:47 > 0:42:50able to switch off all the other light and just have the LEDs on

0:42:50 > 0:42:52here and behind the sofa,

0:42:52 > 0:42:55and it just be like a really beautiful, like, atmospheric light,

0:42:55 > 0:42:58and it's now only going to be half the atmosphere.

0:43:02 > 0:43:05With his entire team getting to grips with the accessories,

0:43:05 > 0:43:09James gets to grips with the statement piece for the living room.

0:43:09 > 0:43:11His clock.

0:43:11 > 0:43:14At home, I've done quite a few different wall hangings

0:43:14 > 0:43:15that are done with wood,

0:43:15 > 0:43:19where you can see the grain and use stones or tiles.

0:43:19 > 0:43:21So, I'm just incorporating that into this brief.

0:43:21 > 0:43:23And then I bought clock hands separately,

0:43:23 > 0:43:26so the mechanism and the clock hands actually fit into the circle

0:43:26 > 0:43:29that's cut out of the board. Yeah, there it is.

0:43:29 > 0:43:31It's finished. So, it's a nice,

0:43:31 > 0:43:34cost-effective way of making a clock.

0:43:36 > 0:43:38Meanwhile, Daniela's faking it with some MDF

0:43:38 > 0:43:40and some gold sticky-back plastic.

0:43:40 > 0:43:42You know,

0:43:42 > 0:43:46this is kind of a rip-off of a real high-end designer piece that's like,

0:43:46 > 0:43:49you know, thousands of pounds.

0:43:49 > 0:43:51But it's going to be very, very subtle.

0:43:51 > 0:43:53It's going to sit on the rug and, yeah,

0:43:53 > 0:43:56just going to be a little glimmer of gold underneath.

0:43:56 > 0:44:00So, altogether, probably, like, £15-worth of materials.

0:44:00 > 0:44:04And you just, a bit like wallpaper, really, you just smooth as you go.

0:44:04 > 0:44:07Pushing out any air bubbles and stretching it down.

0:44:10 > 0:44:11But I think it looks so good.

0:44:11 > 0:44:14And once it's on the rug as well and we got a lovely cream rug down,

0:44:14 > 0:44:16that's going to reflect in that.

0:44:16 > 0:44:18Oh, it's going to be lovely. I'm really pleased.

0:44:21 > 0:44:25As Daniela was the first designer to start, her deadline is almost up.

0:44:25 > 0:44:29Make that up for me, please, darling.

0:44:29 > 0:44:32SHE SIGHS LOUDLY

0:44:32 > 0:44:37She uses every last second to style the room.

0:44:37 > 0:44:39Oh, get in!

0:44:39 > 0:44:41Yep!

0:44:42 > 0:44:44And now, she can do no more.

0:44:46 > 0:44:48LAUGHTER

0:44:48 > 0:44:51- Oh, my gosh!- Her 48 hours are over.

0:44:51 > 0:44:53Oh, I feel like I've just had a baby!

0:44:53 > 0:44:58I actually do. I probably sweated more doing this, I reckon.

0:44:58 > 0:44:59I reckon I did.

0:44:59 > 0:45:01Yeah, I'm finished.

0:45:01 > 0:45:04I'm done and I'm happy.

0:45:05 > 0:45:08Daniela's brief was to create a sophisticated and luxurious

0:45:08 > 0:45:10Parisian-inspired living room.

0:45:12 > 0:45:1548 hours ago, it was a blank, cold blue canvas.

0:45:28 > 0:45:31Now, it's a warm, glamorous and elegant drawing room.

0:45:34 > 0:45:35With wall-to-floor curtains...

0:45:37 > 0:45:41..enhanced by a muted colour scheme and clever lighting.

0:45:42 > 0:45:45The Parisian boutique theme is reflected

0:45:45 > 0:45:47in the use of opulent textures

0:45:47 > 0:45:53and elegant cushions, with Daniela's own photography adorning the walls.

0:45:55 > 0:45:59While her bespoke reflective gold coffee table takes centre stage.

0:46:02 > 0:46:06- Wow! C'est tres jolie. - Tres, tres jolie.

0:46:06 > 0:46:11Sophisticated, elegant, Parisian.

0:46:11 > 0:46:12There's a lovely warmth in this room.

0:46:12 > 0:46:16- I just have to take it all in. - A perfect evening room.

0:46:16 > 0:46:19You know, she's created the statement wall with the fabric,

0:46:19 > 0:46:20and it's clever.

0:46:20 > 0:46:23And she's hidden the radiator with it as well.

0:46:23 > 0:46:26I think I've just discovered the creative challenge.

0:46:26 > 0:46:30- Well spotted.- Is that it?

0:46:30 > 0:46:35It is. So, she's actually taken them apart and stretched them.

0:46:35 > 0:46:38That's very clever. That's very clever.

0:46:38 > 0:46:42- Very creative.- I'm going sit down and see how it feels in the room.

0:46:42 > 0:46:45A couple of little details that are missing,

0:46:45 > 0:46:48which I think means she was a bit rushed towards the end.

0:46:48 > 0:46:51I've noticed the skirting down here's not been painted.

0:46:52 > 0:46:54Wasn't there some LED lighting?

0:46:54 > 0:46:56There's supposed to be LED lighting in there,

0:46:56 > 0:46:57which has not been completed.

0:46:57 > 0:47:01- It's a shame.- There is no question, she's very talented,

0:47:01 > 0:47:02she's not just a stylist,

0:47:02 > 0:47:05she's a designer, but there's a huge amount to learn.

0:47:07 > 0:47:11But will her design work be good enough to win over the homeowners

0:47:11 > 0:47:15and, crucially, win that coveted place in the semifinals?

0:47:15 > 0:47:17Come through.

0:47:19 > 0:47:21Oh, goodness!

0:47:21 > 0:47:23- Goodness!- So, what do you think?

0:47:23 > 0:47:26- It's a lot to take in. - It IS a lot to take in.

0:47:26 > 0:47:28I don't know where to look, to be honest with you.

0:47:28 > 0:47:30Very pleased with this.

0:47:30 > 0:47:31That really is kind of...

0:47:32 > 0:47:35..boutique hotel style.

0:47:35 > 0:47:40With the LED lighting coming down, nice and gentle.

0:47:40 > 0:47:43From my point of view, it's all a bit monotone.

0:47:43 > 0:47:46They seem to have used the one colour.

0:47:46 > 0:47:51Ceilings, walls, beams, seems to have been used everywhere.

0:47:51 > 0:47:54What do you think of the overall finish of the room?

0:47:54 > 0:47:57I can see bare bits of MDF about.

0:47:57 > 0:47:58I don't know if they ran out of time.

0:47:58 > 0:48:00I'm slightly disappointed.

0:48:02 > 0:48:06Meanwhile for James, time is slipping away.

0:48:06 > 0:48:08Oh!

0:48:09 > 0:48:13Every second counts, as his deadline is fast approaching.

0:48:13 > 0:48:15How's that, James?

0:48:15 > 0:48:18Awesome, yeah. Brilliant.

0:48:18 > 0:48:20James adds some final flourishes to his room.

0:48:20 > 0:48:22Oh, brilliant. Thank you.

0:48:22 > 0:48:24- There you go.- Cool.

0:48:24 > 0:48:26Brilliant, cushions, cool.

0:48:26 > 0:48:27Doors shutting nicely there?

0:48:27 > 0:48:29- Yeah.- All right, cool.

0:48:30 > 0:48:33And his 48 hours are now up.

0:48:33 > 0:48:35OK, guys, thanks a lot. That's that.

0:48:35 > 0:48:37- Thanks. Brilliant. - You're very welcome.

0:48:37 > 0:48:39- Yes.- I've done the best I can do.

0:48:39 > 0:48:40It's finished, it's finished on time.

0:48:40 > 0:48:44There's not much more I can do now. It's in the hands of the gods!

0:48:47 > 0:48:50James' brief was to create a homely farm-inspired living room.

0:48:52 > 0:48:5748 hours ago, it was bland, drab and lacking in personality.

0:49:07 > 0:49:10Now, it has a bright, cosy and contemporary edge.

0:49:11 > 0:49:14The light and stylish soft furnishings are drawn together by

0:49:14 > 0:49:18the fresh natural oak tones of the newly varnished floor.

0:49:21 > 0:49:25The floral artwork showcases James's creative nature,

0:49:25 > 0:49:28set off by his rustic statement-piece clock.

0:49:33 > 0:49:34Ah!

0:49:34 > 0:49:38Wow! Very bright and airy.

0:49:38 > 0:49:40Very smart, very crisp.

0:49:40 > 0:49:42The colour of the walls is gorgeous.

0:49:42 > 0:49:44- I love the green paint on here. - I'm with you on that.

0:49:44 > 0:49:49The floor, it feels fresh and it feels open, but for me, Dan,

0:49:49 > 0:49:54you've got two existing sofas that could definitely do with some throws

0:49:54 > 0:49:57over them because they look old and they look dirty,

0:49:57 > 0:49:58and their position, surely,

0:49:58 > 0:50:03either side of the fireplace to make it more welcoming when you come in.

0:50:03 > 0:50:05Yeah. Ah, that's clever!

0:50:05 > 0:50:07You see, that's the James.

0:50:07 > 0:50:09Oh! Now, that's him!

0:50:09 > 0:50:11- That is brilliant!- Yeah.

0:50:11 > 0:50:14He's stacked the tins and wrapped them in rope.

0:50:14 > 0:50:17This is James when he's being creative.

0:50:17 > 0:50:20The interesting thing is, the presentation he produced

0:50:20 > 0:50:22- is exactly what he has given them. - Mm-hm.

0:50:31 > 0:50:32SHE CHUCKLES

0:50:32 > 0:50:33Wow!

0:50:37 > 0:50:39I love it. Oh, wow, look at this!

0:50:39 > 0:50:41- Oh, I really...- First impressions?

0:50:41 > 0:50:44Really, really like it. It feels so much bigger.

0:50:44 > 0:50:46It feels like a really big room

0:50:46 > 0:50:49and it feels so much brighter and lighter.

0:50:49 > 0:50:51Was it the right decision about the floor as well?

0:50:51 > 0:50:53Yes, I think it was the right decision with the flooring,

0:50:53 > 0:50:57especially seeing bits of wood here and having the floor and the wood door,

0:50:57 > 0:51:00I think it helps to bring it all together as a room.

0:51:00 > 0:51:02And it gives a warmth, really. It's a beautiful floor.

0:51:02 > 0:51:06Yeah, this room couldn't be any better for me, it's really my style,

0:51:06 > 0:51:10really relaxing and not too heavy on the design.

0:51:10 > 0:51:13It's not overdesigned for me, and I quite like that.

0:51:21 > 0:51:24The designers have done all they can.

0:51:24 > 0:51:26Now, they must wait for the judges

0:51:26 > 0:51:29to decide who's made it through to the semifinals

0:51:29 > 0:51:31and who's going home.

0:51:32 > 0:51:35If I don't get through...

0:51:35 > 0:51:39I've had a brilliant time and, yeah, it's given me so much back.

0:51:40 > 0:51:42I can't believe I'm getting tearful!

0:51:45 > 0:51:48It would mean a lot to me to get through to the next round.

0:51:48 > 0:51:51You know, I didn't think I would get this far,

0:51:51 > 0:51:53the fact I'm this far into the competition now,

0:51:53 > 0:51:56I would like to see its course.

0:52:02 > 0:52:05So, judges, some amazing mock-Tudor Arts and Crafts houses,

0:52:05 > 0:52:08all about authenticity and design quality.

0:52:08 > 0:52:11Now, do we see that from our two designers?

0:52:11 > 0:52:12Let's start with James.

0:52:12 > 0:52:15Well, James is always authentic.

0:52:15 > 0:52:20What he shows you on those boards is exactly what you're going to get.

0:52:20 > 0:52:24I still believe that he has something unique,

0:52:24 > 0:52:26but I think his prime focus

0:52:26 > 0:52:29was that he had to finish both the rooms.

0:52:29 > 0:52:32And I think the design just let it down a little bit.

0:52:32 > 0:52:33There was no flourish in there.

0:52:33 > 0:52:35He had two sofas,

0:52:35 > 0:52:39very worn, that could have had some throws on them, and I think that

0:52:39 > 0:52:41he could have just been that little more creative.

0:52:41 > 0:52:43It was clever, though.

0:52:43 > 0:52:45His colour scheme in the living room, I loved.

0:52:45 > 0:52:49It was really simple, it was the right tone of the stone grey colour,

0:52:49 > 0:52:52I think some of us call it "greige".

0:52:52 > 0:52:56And yet he balanced it off by painting the entire chimney-breast

0:52:56 > 0:52:59in a soft green, which is a really relaxing colour.

0:52:59 > 0:53:02The homeowner loved it.

0:53:02 > 0:53:06Both rooms. She could barely fault anything.

0:53:06 > 0:53:09- Wonderful.- I mean, adored it. - I knew that, we knew that.

0:53:09 > 0:53:12He worked to that brief, to the tee.

0:53:12 > 0:53:16Now, Daniela was organised and she showed creativity

0:53:16 > 0:53:19the first time around - how about the second time around?

0:53:19 > 0:53:21Daniela has got incredible style

0:53:21 > 0:53:23and she's very good at pulling a design together.

0:53:23 > 0:53:28When she presents, she presents with the total experience.

0:53:28 > 0:53:32She does the mood board, she completely engages the homeowner

0:53:32 > 0:53:34in how they're going to feel in that space.

0:53:34 > 0:53:36And I think she designs that way.

0:53:36 > 0:53:38She sees the end result.

0:53:38 > 0:53:40Exactly, Daniela is an absolute show girl.

0:53:40 > 0:53:42She pulled out all the stoppers this time

0:53:42 > 0:53:44and it was really impressive,

0:53:44 > 0:53:46but when you scratch a little bit under the surface,

0:53:46 > 0:53:50you realise she is almost setting up something for a photoshoot.

0:53:50 > 0:53:52It will look fabulous,

0:53:52 > 0:53:56but there were quite a few corners that weren't finished.

0:53:56 > 0:54:00I think she's still got to learn how to finish something,

0:54:00 > 0:54:03and have a bit of breathing space.

0:54:03 > 0:54:07Well, the homeowners were swept away by the bedroom, they adored it,

0:54:07 > 0:54:10adored it.

0:54:10 > 0:54:12The living room, much more equivocal, I would say.

0:54:12 > 0:54:15- Really?- They were fairly disappointed by it.

0:54:15 > 0:54:17They were disappointed that they didn't get their paint effect.

0:54:17 > 0:54:20They also felt that she hadn't made enough of the room.

0:54:20 > 0:54:21Well, we sort of said that.

0:54:21 > 0:54:25I think they found the overall tone

0:54:25 > 0:54:28and the paint colours all just too neutral.

0:54:28 > 0:54:31I think maybe they got let down cos they were disappointed by the things

0:54:31 > 0:54:33that hadn't gone in.

0:54:33 > 0:54:35So, an interesting response from the homeowner.

0:54:35 > 0:54:37You two have got a lot of discussions to have.

0:54:37 > 0:54:40Kelly, we have, we've got a lot more thinking to do.

0:54:40 > 0:54:43I'm not often speechless, but I'm really shocked and I think

0:54:43 > 0:54:46we've got to go back to the drawing board.

0:54:55 > 0:54:57Now, Arts and Crafts designers believed

0:54:57 > 0:55:00that happy workers made happy buildings.

0:55:00 > 0:55:02Now, I know it's been a slog for you two,

0:55:02 > 0:55:05but I hope you're a little bit happy with the results.

0:55:05 > 0:55:09James and Daniela, you have done incredibly well,

0:55:09 > 0:55:12and this is just the beginning for both of you,

0:55:12 > 0:55:15so you should be extremely proud of yourselves.

0:55:15 > 0:55:17We've taken ages deliberating this

0:55:17 > 0:55:20because it's really difficult for us to make a decision because

0:55:20 > 0:55:22you both are very good,

0:55:22 > 0:55:25but you've both got different strengths and weaknesses.

0:55:25 > 0:55:30Daniela, you've done so well, and you have incredible flair,

0:55:30 > 0:55:32you style beautifully,

0:55:32 > 0:55:36and your designing is really very good, but going forward,

0:55:36 > 0:55:39you need to think about the bigger picture as a whole,

0:55:39 > 0:55:42and it's all about the detail.

0:55:42 > 0:55:45James, what a different person you were from last time.

0:55:45 > 0:55:49This time, extremely happy homeowners.

0:55:49 > 0:55:52Moving on, take a little bit back from that first project,

0:55:52 > 0:55:54that lovely design flair that you had, which I felt

0:55:54 > 0:55:56was a little bit missing here

0:55:56 > 0:55:59and that you were being a bit too conservative.

0:56:00 > 0:56:02So, it's decision time.

0:56:02 > 0:56:05The judges have decided that the designer going through

0:56:05 > 0:56:07to the semifinals is...

0:56:13 > 0:56:16..Daniela.

0:56:20 > 0:56:23But this might not be goodbye, as in a twist,

0:56:23 > 0:56:27Kelly and Daniel will be bringing back one of the eliminated designers

0:56:27 > 0:56:29as a wild card for the semifinals.

0:56:33 > 0:56:36Just wanting to go home, with not going through to the next round,

0:56:36 > 0:56:40but...um, I did the best I could.

0:56:40 > 0:56:42So, how did you get on, then?

0:56:42 > 0:56:44- I didn't get through. - Oh, I'm so sorry.

0:56:44 > 0:56:46I really am so sorry.

0:56:46 > 0:56:48You deserved to go through, you met our brief.

0:56:48 > 0:56:51James didn't go through because, unlike Daniela,

0:56:51 > 0:56:55he was missing the flair this time, and I'm so sad about that.

0:56:55 > 0:56:59You go get some sleep. Thank you for working so hard.

0:56:59 > 0:57:02- Not a problem. Not a problem. You take care of yourself.- Thank you.

0:57:02 > 0:57:05James didn't go through because he wasn't as GOOD as Daniela.

0:57:05 > 0:57:08And I think James's problem this time around

0:57:08 > 0:57:11was purely about finishing the room,

0:57:11 > 0:57:14and he lost the integrity of design.

0:57:16 > 0:57:18I'm absolutely gobsmacked that I went through.

0:57:18 > 0:57:22To be in the semifinals now as a contestant, is just like my dream.

0:57:22 > 0:57:25What I'm looking for in Daniela next time

0:57:25 > 0:57:27is even better than she's produced so far.

0:57:27 > 0:57:29- Hi, Daniela.- Hello.

0:57:29 > 0:57:31All the stress is over now?

0:57:31 > 0:57:32It's all over, I can breathe.

0:57:32 > 0:57:37I rarely see someone who's got that styling ability -

0:57:37 > 0:57:40that is something that is very rare amongst people,

0:57:40 > 0:57:43and Daniela's got it, and actually, she blew me away.

0:57:47 > 0:57:49These Arts and Crafts houses in Worsley

0:57:49 > 0:57:53prove that history is never really dead, it just gets recycled.

0:57:53 > 0:57:55Styles come into fashion, they go out of fashion,

0:57:55 > 0:57:58but the one thing that lasts is design quality -

0:57:58 > 0:57:59something our two designers have proved

0:57:59 > 0:58:02with their own contemporary take on Arts and Crafts.

0:58:07 > 0:58:11Next time, in Georgian-style homes in Wales...

0:58:11 > 0:58:14- a study... - This is not what I expected.

0:58:14 > 0:58:17- ..and a bedroom. - It's going to look beautiful.

0:58:17 > 0:58:20But hard graft means emotions run high.

0:58:20 > 0:58:22He looks so nervous.

0:58:22 > 0:58:24I am very much making this up as I go along.

0:58:24 > 0:58:27I'm going to cry! I'm going to cry!
