0:00:02 > 0:00:04Here in the UK, we're blessed with an enormous variety

0:00:04 > 0:00:06of types and styles of buildings that we call home,

0:00:06 > 0:00:10from thatched cottages to 1930s Art Deco apartments,

0:00:10 > 0:00:13regency terraces to contemporary townhouses.

0:00:13 > 0:00:17But sometimes, while the exterior creates a wow factor,

0:00:17 > 0:00:19the interior can be distinctly lacking.

0:00:22 > 0:00:27So we've gathered some of UK's most talented amateur interior designers

0:00:27 > 0:00:28to show us what they're made of.

0:00:30 > 0:00:32- Let's get started, guys. - Time is ticking.

0:00:32 > 0:00:35We're in the quarterfinals, and the pressure is mounting.

0:00:36 > 0:00:38That's it now. I'm really happy.

0:00:39 > 0:00:41I may die of exhaustion.

0:00:41 > 0:00:44I really don't need this.

0:00:44 > 0:00:47- Pressure's on.- Putting them through their paces and scrutinising their

0:00:47 > 0:00:50every move are judges Daniel Hopwood,

0:00:50 > 0:00:51designer, and a director

0:00:51 > 0:00:53of the British Institute of Interior Design...

0:00:55 > 0:00:57This year, we've got new challenges

0:00:57 > 0:00:59for the designers. We're really going to push them to the limit.

0:00:59 > 0:01:03..and internationally renowned interior designer Kelly Hoppen.

0:01:03 > 0:01:06As a judge in this competition, I want to see perfection.

0:01:06 > 0:01:09I think I will be quite a hard judge.

0:01:09 > 0:01:12But it's going to take a lot of creativity and hard work to be

0:01:12 > 0:01:15crowned winner of the Great Interior Design Challenge.

0:01:21 > 0:01:22It's the quarterfinals,

0:01:22 > 0:01:26and two designers from the first round will be competing for a place

0:01:26 > 0:01:29- in the semifinals. - I need this to go up here, yeah?

0:01:29 > 0:01:31Can we get the wardrobe up, please?

0:01:31 > 0:01:34Only this time, they haven't just got one room to do each -

0:01:34 > 0:01:36they've got two in neighbouring houses.

0:01:36 > 0:01:41- Voila!- Now I've got to unpick it all and start all over again.

0:01:41 > 0:01:44They'll have just 48 hours over three days...

0:01:44 > 0:01:47I've only got a few hours to get the work done. I'm just like...

0:01:47 > 0:01:49..£2,000 for their two rooms.

0:01:49 > 0:01:51- Big day today.- Yeah.- Huge day!

0:01:51 > 0:01:53..and this time, their teams have doubled.

0:01:53 > 0:01:55- You're the boss.- Yeah, cool.

0:01:55 > 0:01:58There'll be two builders and two decorators to manage.

0:02:00 > 0:02:02We're just going like whirling dervishes.

0:02:02 > 0:02:05- We're all quite crazy. - And in their toughest challenge yet,

0:02:05 > 0:02:09their first room must be finished and judged on day two.

0:02:11 > 0:02:14They've got an uplighter somewhere. I don't know where that went.

0:02:14 > 0:02:16They'll need to work hard to impress...

0:02:16 > 0:02:18This competition is very important to me.

0:02:18 > 0:02:20It's something that I've always

0:02:20 > 0:02:22really, really passionately wanted to do.

0:02:22 > 0:02:24It's like, please! Do you know what I mean?

0:02:24 > 0:02:26Someone up there, do you know what I mean? Come on.

0:02:26 > 0:02:28Smile down on me, please.

0:02:28 > 0:02:31..because it'll be goodbye for one of them at the end of this round.

0:02:41 > 0:02:45Streatham lies just six miles south of the City of London.

0:02:45 > 0:02:47It's name, rather quaintly, means "hamlet on the street",

0:02:47 > 0:02:50the street in question being the great Roman road

0:02:50 > 0:02:54that went from London to Sussex - now otherwise known as the A23.

0:02:56 > 0:02:59It's a little hard to imagine today, but back in the 1930s,

0:02:59 > 0:03:02Streatham was one of London's most forward-thinking,

0:03:02 > 0:03:04even futuristic, neighbourhoods -

0:03:04 > 0:03:06its high road thronged with cars off to London's original

0:03:06 > 0:03:10airport at Croydon, and crowds going to see films in its modern cinemas.

0:03:10 > 0:03:12It was so busy and bustling,

0:03:12 > 0:03:15it was nicknamed the West End of South London.

0:03:15 > 0:03:19And just off the high street lies this testament to Art Deco -

0:03:19 > 0:03:20Manor Court.

0:03:20 > 0:03:23The Art Deco style burst onto the scene in the 1920s,

0:03:23 > 0:03:25particularly in France and America.

0:03:25 > 0:03:28It encapsulated, in one architectural style,

0:03:28 > 0:03:30the decade's opulence and decadence.

0:03:33 > 0:03:36It wasn't really until the 1934 Ideal Home Show,

0:03:36 > 0:03:40with its Village of Tomorrow, the idea of living in an Art Deco home

0:03:40 > 0:03:43really took off in this country. Built the year after,

0:03:43 > 0:03:46Manor Court was designed by the innovative property developer

0:03:46 > 0:03:48and architect Reginald Toms.

0:03:48 > 0:03:51His ambition, to bring luxurious apartment-living

0:03:51 > 0:03:52to the middle classes.

0:03:53 > 0:03:56Our amateur designers have two rooms each to transform

0:03:56 > 0:03:59in these glamorous 1930s flats.

0:04:00 > 0:04:03They'll each be handed a living room and a guest bedroom.

0:04:05 > 0:04:08The first designer returning is 49-year-old Oliver,

0:04:08 > 0:04:10a hairdresser from London.

0:04:11 > 0:04:13My style is a mashup.

0:04:13 > 0:04:16There's a little bit of grandeur, little bit of olde-worlde charm.

0:04:16 > 0:04:19I haven't had any training in interior design at all.

0:04:19 > 0:04:22It does come from within. It's something that I really enjoy.

0:04:22 > 0:04:25And I think I've grown better at it as time has gone on.

0:04:25 > 0:04:28According to all my friends and family, anyway, so...!

0:04:30 > 0:04:33Last time, he impressed the judges with his ornate bedroom

0:04:33 > 0:04:35in a Regency townhouse.

0:04:36 > 0:04:39But it was his inventiveness that secured him a place in the

0:04:39 > 0:04:43- quarterfinals.- Oliver's room in the first round was really good.

0:04:43 > 0:04:46It was beautifully put together, very tasteful.

0:04:46 > 0:04:49What I want to see Oliver now do is express himself more,

0:04:49 > 0:04:55and just show what he can create as a style and as a look that he owns.

0:04:55 > 0:04:59Prior to this, Oliver has been very laid-back, very chilled,

0:04:59 > 0:05:02sort of winging it. So it will be interesting to see how he manages

0:05:02 > 0:05:06to do two rooms with twice as many people, and get it done on time.

0:05:09 > 0:05:12The first space Oliver has been asked to work on

0:05:12 > 0:05:16is a rather compact spare room, belonging to Chris and Paul.

0:05:16 > 0:05:18The spare bedroom, I mean, since I moved in,

0:05:18 > 0:05:21it literally has housed all of MY stuff,

0:05:21 > 0:05:23that is still in bags and boxes.

0:05:23 > 0:05:24And this is going to really give us

0:05:24 > 0:05:27an opportunity to utilise the space properly.

0:05:27 > 0:05:30Although both designers have had their briefs for over a week,

0:05:30 > 0:05:33this will be the first time they're seeing the rooms in person.

0:05:33 > 0:05:37So when you see it physically, it just seems different.

0:05:37 > 0:05:41Chris and Paul's brief is to stay true to the Art Deco style of the

0:05:41 > 0:05:43building but also to inject

0:05:43 > 0:05:45some opulence into this mundane spare room.

0:05:45 > 0:05:48I am a bit of a perfectionist, and I think so are you.

0:05:48 > 0:05:50This has to be right.

0:05:50 > 0:05:51Yes, you are!

0:05:54 > 0:05:56The second room Oliver is taking on is the lounge.

0:05:58 > 0:05:59That's better.

0:06:01 > 0:06:05Yeah, that's cool. I can't wait to get on with this room, actually.

0:06:05 > 0:06:07Again, the brief is for Art Deco,

0:06:07 > 0:06:10with an emphasis on a gentleman's club feel.

0:06:10 > 0:06:16Kind of martini glasses, tuxedos, Poirot, that kind of thing.

0:06:16 > 0:06:18Has to have seating to relax in,

0:06:18 > 0:06:21it has to have a dining table so we can entertain in there.

0:06:21 > 0:06:23- It's a small flat.- It's a combination of style and content,

0:06:23 > 0:06:26- unfortunately.- Yeah.- Which might be a hard thing to pull off.

0:06:32 > 0:06:34Judging his presentation will be

0:06:34 > 0:06:36industry experts Daniel Hopwood and Kelly Hoppen.

0:06:38 > 0:06:41They'll be assessing how well he puts forward his design

0:06:41 > 0:06:44and how adaptable he is to his clients' needs.

0:06:47 > 0:06:49We're going to start with the lounge.

0:06:49 > 0:06:52And I've come up with this.

0:06:53 > 0:06:56- Wow. Yeah. - First impressions, bang on.

0:06:56 > 0:06:58We've got a beautiful leather sofa.

0:06:58 > 0:07:02- Fantastic.- And these original vintage 1930s armchairs.

0:07:02 > 0:07:06- So we can sit on our armchairs and have a...- Cocktail.- A cocktail.

0:07:06 > 0:07:07- A G&T.- A martini.

0:07:07 > 0:07:11- I like that.- I want to do your skirtings black.

0:07:11 > 0:07:13- OK.- If it's OK with you.

0:07:13 > 0:07:15We're going to go round with the black on the skirting,

0:07:15 > 0:07:19and we're going to do a tiny frieze black around the door.

0:07:19 > 0:07:21You know, so this is obviously the kind of the idea of, you know,

0:07:21 > 0:07:24if you had wooden inlay. Because you don't have a chimney breast.

0:07:24 > 0:07:27- Yes.- You know, it kind of gives you that optical illusion that you have

0:07:27 > 0:07:29got one. Would that be OK?

0:07:31 > 0:07:32Yeah. I'd like to see it, actually.

0:07:32 > 0:07:35Same here. Um... It's quite unusual.

0:07:35 > 0:07:36I've not seen it before.

0:07:36 > 0:07:38And we're going to take your carpet up,

0:07:38 > 0:07:41- and then we're going to stain your floorboards for you.- Fantastic.

0:07:41 > 0:07:43Very excited to see how it's put into reality.

0:07:43 > 0:07:45I can't wait to sit on that sofa.

0:07:47 > 0:07:50Next up are Oliver's ideas for the small guest room.

0:07:50 > 0:07:52Your living room is sophisticated.

0:07:52 > 0:07:53This is a little more fun.

0:07:53 > 0:07:58A little more opulent. This is an original 1930s burr-walnut wardrobe.

0:07:58 > 0:08:02This is a single bed, which I'm going to make a sunrise headboard.

0:08:02 > 0:08:05And obviously, we've got, like, an Art Deco detail in panelling.

0:08:05 > 0:08:07It'll frame all this gorgeous wallpaper.

0:08:07 > 0:08:10- Yeah.- These are bedside tables, which I'm covering in mock croc.

0:08:10 > 0:08:12What's mock croc?

0:08:12 > 0:08:15Mock croc is like artificial crocodile skin.

0:08:15 > 0:08:17Have you never felt mock croc before?

0:08:17 > 0:08:18- Um. No.- Only in a handbag!

0:08:20 > 0:08:24It's just... It's one of those sort of fabrics, what ever you put it on,

0:08:24 > 0:08:26it just instantly sort of glamorises everything.

0:08:26 > 0:08:30- It's very Gatsby.- Yes.- Yes, it is incredibly that, yeah.- Yeah.

0:08:30 > 0:08:33Oliver is so passionate in his presentations,

0:08:33 > 0:08:36and he completely captivated the homeowners,

0:08:36 > 0:08:38who within literally seconds were, "I love it."

0:08:38 > 0:08:40My concern is, though,

0:08:40 > 0:08:44that they now have the full visual of what the room could look like,

0:08:44 > 0:08:46and they might be disappointed with the finished result.

0:08:49 > 0:08:53First things first, this furniture's going, so we'll be left

0:08:53 > 0:08:54with a blank canvas.

0:08:54 > 0:08:57The clock has started on Oliver's 48 hours.

0:08:57 > 0:08:59- Perfect.- So, for both rooms,

0:08:59 > 0:09:02it's out with the furniture and up with the carpet.

0:09:03 > 0:09:05I had it down as 76 inches.

0:09:05 > 0:09:07Illegal to use inches, now!

0:09:07 > 0:09:09- Yes, it is.- Actually, we're out of Europe now, so we probably

0:09:09 > 0:09:11can use them again, can't we?

0:09:12 > 0:09:15Our second returning designer is 37-year-old Shaida,

0:09:15 > 0:09:18a freelance make-up artist from Northampton.

0:09:19 > 0:09:22I've always had this love for the Moroccan -

0:09:22 > 0:09:25the prints and the themes and the colours, and everything.

0:09:26 > 0:09:29I believe I have the skills to delegate.

0:09:29 > 0:09:30I've got the leadership skills there,

0:09:30 > 0:09:32and I do like to do things on my own as well.

0:09:34 > 0:09:38Last time, she wowed the judges with an opulent Moroccan theme in

0:09:38 > 0:09:39a Gothic revival bedroom.

0:09:40 > 0:09:42And her knock for creating an ambience

0:09:42 > 0:09:45won her a place in the quarterfinals.

0:09:45 > 0:09:49Shaida has a very Moorish East-meets-West type of style,

0:09:49 > 0:09:52and I'm just interested to see whether she can come out

0:09:52 > 0:09:55of her comfort zone and follow a different kind of brief this time.

0:09:55 > 0:09:57Shaida is all-go, though.

0:09:57 > 0:10:00And she's passionate about interior design,

0:10:00 > 0:10:03and that does mean she slips over the budget quite easily.

0:10:03 > 0:10:05I wonder if she's going to control herself this time.

0:10:05 > 0:10:09Shaida's challenge is to take on two rooms in the flat

0:10:09 > 0:10:12belonging to Imogen and Nick. They have big plans

0:10:12 > 0:10:14for their small guest room.

0:10:14 > 0:10:19The spare room at the moment looks neglected, boring.

0:10:19 > 0:10:22A mishmash of chairs and all sorts of stuff at the moment.

0:10:22 > 0:10:24Smaller than I thought.

0:10:24 > 0:10:28The homeowners want a light and airy makeover for this guest room,

0:10:28 > 0:10:32with an English country-garden feel and plenty of storage.

0:10:32 > 0:10:34I'd really like to see a chest of drawers!

0:10:34 > 0:10:37- That's my main... - Yeah, storage is, yeah, is an issue.

0:10:37 > 0:10:40The second space Shaida is taking on is the living room.

0:10:41 > 0:10:43Nice little room. Nice and cosy.

0:10:43 > 0:10:46I think what we would change about the living room, definitely,

0:10:46 > 0:10:48is the chimney stack's kind of painted brown.

0:10:48 > 0:10:50So we have this brown theme throughout the flat

0:10:50 > 0:10:52that we're quite keen to get rid of.

0:10:52 > 0:10:54The homeowners' brief for the living room is

0:10:54 > 0:10:57contemporary with eclectic styling,

0:10:57 > 0:11:00inspired by their artwork and a nod to nature.

0:11:00 > 0:11:02We've been quite open with what we like,

0:11:02 > 0:11:03so it could be a challenge,

0:11:03 > 0:11:05in that there is perhaps a lot of possibilities.

0:11:05 > 0:11:07But we definitely know what we don't like.

0:11:08 > 0:11:11So, for the guest room, took the inspiration from your two images

0:11:11 > 0:11:13that you gave me. The figurine images.

0:11:13 > 0:11:15So I've taken the colours from there

0:11:15 > 0:11:20and used them to create paint effects.

0:11:20 > 0:11:21I bought you a new chest of drawers,

0:11:21 > 0:11:24and I'm going to be doing a connecting shelving there.

0:11:24 > 0:11:29So that wall, as soon as you walk in, is going to be full of storage.

0:11:29 > 0:11:32I wonder if it will feel a bit kind of claustrophobic.

0:11:32 > 0:11:33But, you know, we need storage.

0:11:33 > 0:11:36- Yeah.- And I think what you've planned

0:11:36 > 0:11:38is a really clever use of space.

0:11:38 > 0:11:40And here's the mood board for the lounge.

0:11:40 > 0:11:42Walls will be an off-white.

0:11:42 > 0:11:44And then the main chimney colour...

0:11:44 > 0:11:45- Oh, yeah.- ..will be the deep green.

0:11:45 > 0:11:47Ah. So it looks quite dark.

0:11:47 > 0:11:49And I had wanted something light.

0:11:49 > 0:11:51- But maybe in...- Yeah. - Maybe just because we hate the brown

0:11:51 > 0:11:53that we can't see past it!

0:11:53 > 0:11:55- I know, I know. - So maybe once the green is up...

0:11:55 > 0:11:59What I've done is, I've actually designed you an all-inclusive

0:11:59 > 0:12:03shelving unit, which is going to basically be taking place over here.

0:12:03 > 0:12:05The TV will then be moved over to this end.

0:12:05 > 0:12:08This will free up this area over here and near the window,

0:12:08 > 0:12:12which means we can then have the dining table open.

0:12:12 > 0:12:15Other than rearranging the layout of the room,

0:12:15 > 0:12:16Shaida has also taken inspiration

0:12:16 > 0:12:19from the homeowners' favourite artwork.

0:12:19 > 0:12:23This is the wallpaper that I'll be using on the back wall over there.

0:12:23 > 0:12:25It's not going to be butterfly overload?

0:12:25 > 0:12:28- No, no.- That was my main worry! - No, no, no.

0:12:28 > 0:12:31There's a lot going on, but hopefully, I think, in a nice way.

0:12:31 > 0:12:33I'm quite confident with it.

0:12:33 > 0:12:35I want to make sure, when I leave, you guys are smiling.

0:12:35 > 0:12:36Not crying!

0:12:38 > 0:12:41Shaida's had a very difficult brief this week.

0:12:41 > 0:12:44There was an enormous amount in that that they wanted.

0:12:44 > 0:12:47There's country living, there's a bit of Art Deco,

0:12:47 > 0:12:48there's butterflies.

0:12:48 > 0:12:50All in one small room.

0:12:50 > 0:12:54She's really got to take something out to make that look good.

0:12:54 > 0:12:57In terms of what it's going to look like, I'm still in the dark,

0:12:57 > 0:13:00because that presentation board gave me nothing.

0:13:00 > 0:13:04So I think her mood board needs to be much more specific.

0:13:09 > 0:13:11If you all take one each...

0:13:11 > 0:13:13At the start of her 48 hours,

0:13:13 > 0:13:17Shaida is being meticulous with her planning.

0:13:17 > 0:13:19I've divided the jobs between us.

0:13:19 > 0:13:22Myself on the left, the painter-decorator in the middle,

0:13:22 > 0:13:24and then the builder on the right.

0:13:24 > 0:13:25OK, everybody turn the pages together.

0:13:27 > 0:13:28Yeah. This is the door over there.

0:13:28 > 0:13:31The sofa's going to stay where it is.

0:13:31 > 0:13:34The team might know what's going on, but the homeowners aren't so sure.

0:13:34 > 0:13:37It's so hard to think what it's going to look like finally.

0:13:37 > 0:13:40I really liked it, but just don't know what it's going to look like.

0:13:40 > 0:13:42If it is too much, then we might say...

0:13:42 > 0:13:44Well, you know. I WILL say!

0:13:44 > 0:13:47I just hope it doesn't upset things too much.

0:13:47 > 0:13:49How do you guys feel about that?

0:13:50 > 0:13:51Lots. We've got a lot to do.

0:13:51 > 0:13:53- Lot to do.- A lot to do.

0:13:53 > 0:13:54Well, let's get started, guys.

0:13:57 > 0:14:00By the way, guys. No-one's allowed to lose their pieces of paper.

0:14:00 > 0:14:01Oh, no!

0:14:01 > 0:14:07Yeah. If anybody does, they will end up having another job on top to do,

0:14:07 > 0:14:09OK?

0:14:19 > 0:14:22But one thing you really can't miss here at Manor Court are all these

0:14:22 > 0:14:26windows, many of them in the original modern steel frames,

0:14:26 > 0:14:27mass produced by Crittall.

0:14:27 > 0:14:30We went mad for sunlight in the 1930s.

0:14:30 > 0:14:32Bright interiors were more hygienic,

0:14:32 > 0:14:34all that vitamin D was great for health,

0:14:34 > 0:14:37and suntans were the very height of fashion.

0:14:38 > 0:14:40And that brightness was also reflected

0:14:40 > 0:14:44in the detail of this architectural movement.

0:14:44 > 0:14:47The main entrances have simple but rather stylish porches.

0:14:47 > 0:14:50Originally, they'd have had uniformed porters.

0:14:50 > 0:14:53But in keeping with the modern spirit of the block,

0:14:53 > 0:14:55the humans have been replaced by machine.

0:15:03 > 0:15:06And it's Art Deco glamour that Oliver is after

0:15:06 > 0:15:09for his gentleman's club-inspired living room.

0:15:09 > 0:15:12There's actually a really happy surprise under here,

0:15:12 > 0:15:14cos this looks like it's oak floorboards.

0:15:15 > 0:15:18Unfortunately, it's not all good news on the floor in front.

0:15:19 > 0:15:21Right, so I was told that it was

0:15:21 > 0:15:24going to be wooden floorboards in here.

0:15:24 > 0:15:26- And obviously, it's not.- No.

0:15:26 > 0:15:28Oliver's builder has made a disastrous discovery

0:15:28 > 0:15:30beneath the guest room carpet.

0:15:30 > 0:15:33These are Marley tiles, and over a certain age,

0:15:33 > 0:15:35they contain trace asbestos.

0:15:35 > 0:15:39Which is completely safe while they're just lying glued down

0:15:39 > 0:15:41and untouched. But you mustn't break them.

0:15:41 > 0:15:42So we can't touch them.

0:15:42 > 0:15:44So the rod has to stay as well.

0:15:44 > 0:15:46Yeah. You never, ever touch

0:15:46 > 0:15:50without checking with an asbestos expert first.

0:15:50 > 0:15:52When you're working on houses of this sort of age,

0:15:52 > 0:15:55you've got to be aware that there's potentially asbestos in them.

0:15:55 > 0:15:58It's very dangerous, and I think they've found it in

0:15:58 > 0:16:00- Oliver's bedroom.- I know. It'll be interesting to see

0:16:00 > 0:16:01how Oliver reacts to this.

0:16:01 > 0:16:05The second room, unfortunately, has had to be closed off and we're

0:16:05 > 0:16:09waiting for word from the council as to what we can do with it.

0:16:09 > 0:16:11I was going to actually use that room as my first room to finish.

0:16:11 > 0:16:13But obviously I can't do anything with that room now,

0:16:13 > 0:16:15so it'll have to be this room

0:16:15 > 0:16:17that's going to be the first one to be finished.

0:16:17 > 0:16:20And in the meantime, we're getting up this horrible,

0:16:20 > 0:16:23disintegrated underlay before we can do anything else.

0:16:29 > 0:16:30So this is the existing unit.

0:16:30 > 0:16:32That's it. Yeah, perfect, perfect, perfect.

0:16:32 > 0:16:35Over with Shaida, she's chosen her small guest bedroom

0:16:35 > 0:16:36to be revealed first.

0:16:36 > 0:16:38How do you feel about that?

0:16:38 > 0:16:40Um...

0:16:40 > 0:16:42- You're the boss. - Yeah? Cool.- It's fine.

0:16:42 > 0:16:45Her second room to be completed, the living room,

0:16:45 > 0:16:47will be finished in 48 hours.

0:16:47 > 0:16:49Do you envisage all the paint on the walls -

0:16:49 > 0:16:52- before we leave today? - The first coat, yeah.

0:16:52 > 0:16:53Second coating tomorrow morning.

0:16:53 > 0:16:57We're on schedule, but I'd like to get a bit more done.

0:16:57 > 0:16:59Shaida managing a project?

0:16:59 > 0:17:02I've got every confidence in her and she'll get it done.

0:17:02 > 0:17:05She's very specific in the way that she speaks.

0:17:05 > 0:17:07She is calm. She is organised.

0:17:07 > 0:17:10And I think she gets on with the team, which is really important.

0:17:10 > 0:17:12Do you think so? I think she is a bit bossy.

0:17:12 > 0:17:15No, I think she's all right, she's just got a sense of humour.

0:17:15 > 0:17:18- And you need that in this business. - Oh, yes!

0:17:21 > 0:17:24For Shaida's living room scheme, she's revamping some

0:17:24 > 0:17:26of the homeowner's furniture.

0:17:26 > 0:17:31I'm upholstering the chairs, because I do not like that.

0:17:32 > 0:17:35And also, this doesn't go with the themes.

0:17:35 > 0:17:36I've never done it in my life,

0:17:36 > 0:17:39so I'm guessing I need to unscrew this

0:17:39 > 0:17:42and hopefully the seat will come off.

0:17:42 > 0:17:45Ta-da!

0:17:45 > 0:17:47You can do this, Shaida, you can do this!

0:17:49 > 0:17:52This is too thick, I need something thinner than this.

0:17:52 > 0:17:53Are you keeping all the fabric?

0:17:53 > 0:17:55No, no, I'm definitely not keeping that bit.

0:17:55 > 0:17:57Can't you just go around it?

0:17:57 > 0:18:00Go around it? Stuart, you're not just a pretty face.

0:18:06 > 0:18:10Oliver has also had the same idea to update the existing furniture.

0:18:10 > 0:18:12I'm a dab hand at doing this.

0:18:12 > 0:18:16All you have to do when you do it is make sure you do the middle

0:18:16 > 0:18:19of one side first and the corresponding opposite side,

0:18:19 > 0:18:21and get some tension on it.

0:18:21 > 0:18:22It's kind of child's play.

0:18:26 > 0:18:28I've never used one of these, ever before.

0:18:34 > 0:18:36Yeah, voila.

0:18:43 > 0:18:44Five to go.

0:18:50 > 0:18:52The end of day one is approaching,

0:18:52 > 0:18:55and both designers are working at full pelt.

0:18:55 > 0:18:56I may die of exhaustion.

0:18:56 > 0:18:58Exjau... Ex... What?

0:18:59 > 0:19:02I'm so exhausted, I can't even say the word!

0:19:03 > 0:19:05I'm sanding the chairs

0:19:05 > 0:19:08because I'm going to paint them a different colour.

0:19:09 > 0:19:10I have an hour left.

0:19:11 > 0:19:13I've got four and a half chairs left yet.

0:19:19 > 0:19:22Oliver had planned to show the judges the smaller bedroom first,

0:19:22 > 0:19:24but with that off limits,

0:19:24 > 0:19:27he now needs to get the larger living room ready instead.

0:19:27 > 0:19:29All hands on deck.

0:19:29 > 0:19:31With less time but more work needed

0:19:31 > 0:19:33to get his larger room finished first,

0:19:33 > 0:19:36his team have been given an extra hour to prepare the floor.

0:19:36 > 0:19:40I've taken the decision to clean these rather than sand them all -

0:19:40 > 0:19:43we just don't have time to spend half a day sanding these right back.

0:19:43 > 0:19:46So if we, kind of, make good on them now,

0:19:46 > 0:19:48then they should still varnish nicely tomorrow.

0:19:48 > 0:19:52A little bit of elbow grease makes a huge difference.

0:19:55 > 0:19:59Let's just crack on in the morning, shall we? Yeah? Thanks so much.

0:19:59 > 0:20:02- Thank you.- Thank you. So, first thing tomorrow,

0:20:02 > 0:20:04we've got the asbestos inspector coming,

0:20:04 > 0:20:07who will hopefully give us the green light to continue working

0:20:07 > 0:20:10in the bedroom. So, yes, here's hoping.

0:20:28 > 0:20:32It's day two, and the pressure is on for Shaida, but especially Oliver,

0:20:32 > 0:20:33who doesn't even know yet

0:20:33 > 0:20:36whether he'll be able to work on his second room.

0:20:39 > 0:20:41Unable to start on the bedroom,

0:20:41 > 0:20:44Oliver's whole team are working on the living room.

0:20:44 > 0:20:48Morning, guys, hello. Right, OK, I can see you are getting on

0:20:48 > 0:20:50and everything. The second coat's going on.

0:20:50 > 0:20:53Can we sort out this floor? This is really, really important.

0:20:53 > 0:20:55The guys have just started that now.

0:20:55 > 0:20:58It's a big day today. HUGE day.

0:20:58 > 0:21:01We've got so much to do today.

0:21:02 > 0:21:05I didn't know where to begin, to be honest.

0:21:05 > 0:21:08We've got to get the floor done, we should get the varnish done

0:21:08 > 0:21:10this morning, and get that dry so we can go back in the room.

0:21:10 > 0:21:12I still don't know about the bedroom.

0:21:12 > 0:21:14It's a busy, busy, busy day today.

0:21:16 > 0:21:18Work has been on hold in the small guest room

0:21:18 > 0:21:22until an expert can pass his professional eye over the situation

0:21:22 > 0:21:25and test for the dreaded asbestos.

0:21:25 > 0:21:27How long do you reckon this will take?

0:21:27 > 0:21:30Fingers crossed. We'll get back to our lab at the office

0:21:30 > 0:21:33and analyse it, and we should be able to give you a result

0:21:33 > 0:21:36- within the next couple of hours. - Fingers crossed.

0:21:38 > 0:21:40Fortunately for Shaida,

0:21:40 > 0:21:43there are no such obstacles holding up HER plan for the spare bedroom.

0:21:43 > 0:21:46I'm sure you all know that I need to get the guest room done today.

0:21:46 > 0:21:48- Yeah.- Is everybody happy?- Yeah.

0:21:48 > 0:21:50- OK.- Excellent, let's go.

0:21:50 > 0:21:54The priority for today is to get the guest room completed, so

0:21:54 > 0:21:55we're working on the units there.

0:21:55 > 0:21:58Sanding them down, priming them, and just got to work hard today.

0:22:00 > 0:22:02That looks really nice.

0:22:02 > 0:22:04Perfect. I think they'll really, really like it,

0:22:04 > 0:22:08because it's actually using up the space in a very, very good way.

0:22:10 > 0:22:13In Oliver's living room, the final touches of varnish

0:22:13 > 0:22:15are going down on the original floorboards.

0:22:15 > 0:22:17It's a real show stopper.

0:22:17 > 0:22:20- It looks incredible.- Now it's another waiting game until it dries.

0:22:20 > 0:22:22Kind of, give it close to two hours.

0:22:22 > 0:22:24Two hours?

0:22:24 > 0:22:26I'll just have to find other things to do, won't I, for two hours,

0:22:26 > 0:22:28that don't involve this room?

0:22:30 > 0:22:32Because of the drying time now, I've had to find my builders other things

0:22:32 > 0:22:34to do, you know, but there's plenty

0:22:34 > 0:22:36to be getting on with, so it's not a problem.

0:22:36 > 0:22:39LAUGHTER

0:22:41 > 0:22:43As you can see.

0:22:44 > 0:22:48To hide the modern TV in his 1930s lounge, Oliver is making

0:22:48 > 0:22:51a simple screen from MDF and upholstery nails.

0:22:54 > 0:22:56Do you want a little set square,

0:22:56 > 0:23:00so you can keep it the same distance from the edge all the way around?

0:23:00 > 0:23:02I will grab you one.

0:23:02 > 0:23:04This is what they call a nail trim.

0:23:04 > 0:23:07As you see, you have every fifth one, you have a hole,

0:23:07 > 0:23:10which you put one of these little pins into.

0:23:10 > 0:23:13And it gives you the effect that you've studded all the way through.

0:23:13 > 0:23:16If you do that and just keep it locked,

0:23:16 > 0:23:19then you just go all the way around, and it keeps it nice and uniform.

0:23:19 > 0:23:22Well, I've gone wrong already, so I'll have to take those ones out.

0:23:22 > 0:23:26Before I got that thing for you, I said, "Before you go any further..."

0:23:27 > 0:23:29- That's because I'm impatient.- Yeah.

0:23:31 > 0:23:33Massively disappointed if I went out now.

0:23:34 > 0:23:36I want to change my career.

0:23:36 > 0:23:39I've had a good career as a hairdresser and I've enjoyed it all,

0:23:39 > 0:23:41but I just don't want to do it any more.

0:23:41 > 0:23:44Doing this is hopefully a launchpad.

0:23:45 > 0:23:47Before it's too late to

0:23:47 > 0:23:49just have a go!

0:23:52 > 0:23:55To jazz up her chest of drawers in the guest room,

0:23:55 > 0:23:56Shaida is covering them

0:23:56 > 0:23:59with Art Deco-inspired textured wallpaper.

0:23:59 > 0:24:02I have never, ever, ever put wallpaper on a unit.

0:24:04 > 0:24:06It's another first for Shaida.

0:24:06 > 0:24:08Do you know what? I think I need your assistance on this.

0:24:08 > 0:24:11- OK.- Shaida decides to pass on the papering.

0:24:11 > 0:24:15So, I've delegated sticking the wallpaper to my decorator.

0:24:16 > 0:24:20Meanwhile, the electrician has arrived to reposition the TV aerial,

0:24:20 > 0:24:23so the television can be moved to the other side of the living room.

0:24:23 > 0:24:26- You just need this aerial point across the room?- Yeah, basically.

0:24:26 > 0:24:29I can tell that the make-up of the floorboards,

0:24:29 > 0:24:30because they're so small,

0:24:30 > 0:24:34- I'll try to get them up safely without breaking them.- OK.

0:24:34 > 0:24:36The only other way, then, obviously, is, what,

0:24:36 > 0:24:38taking the wires over the skirting?

0:24:38 > 0:24:42So, we can go like that, or we can go like that.

0:24:42 > 0:24:45- No, the first one. - The first one.- OK.

0:24:49 > 0:24:54- Hi, Shaida.- Hi. You all right?- I'm all right, how are you?- Very well.

0:24:54 > 0:24:56The electrician came in - what was he doing?

0:24:56 > 0:24:59Right, so, I wanted the television to be moved from this point over to

0:24:59 > 0:25:02- that point.- Yeah, cos you're moving everything from one side

0:25:02 > 0:25:05- to the other.- I think when you walk into the room, if there was stuff

0:25:05 > 0:25:07going on there and stuff going on there,

0:25:07 > 0:25:10- it's just too busy.- First thing you don't want to see is a television.

0:25:10 > 0:25:13- Yes.- It's a good tip, this, tuck it behind

0:25:13 > 0:25:15and then have the dining table,

0:25:15 > 0:25:18- which is something of beauty, in the window.- That's it.- Great.

0:25:18 > 0:25:20So, how are you getting on in the other room?

0:25:20 > 0:25:22We do need to work faster on that room,

0:25:22 > 0:25:24because I've got to get that done today.

0:25:24 > 0:25:25- OK.- Yeah.

0:25:28 > 0:25:30If you look across the rooftops at Manor Court,

0:25:30 > 0:25:32you don't see many chimneys.

0:25:32 > 0:25:35Fireplaces were only installed in the living rooms of the apartments,

0:25:35 > 0:25:38the rest of the spaces being heated by electric fires.

0:25:38 > 0:25:40In this most modern of decades,

0:25:40 > 0:25:43dirty old coal was definitely not the fuel of the future.

0:25:45 > 0:25:48The original fireplaces in the apartments were incredible things.

0:25:48 > 0:25:50They make a big, powerful statement -

0:25:50 > 0:25:52like pieces of architecture in their own right -

0:25:52 > 0:25:54mass-produced in concrete,

0:25:54 > 0:25:57and decorated with these sinuous and sensuous curves.

0:26:01 > 0:26:03Is the floor completely dry?

0:26:03 > 0:26:06- It's touch dry.- Oliver is also keen to make a powerful statement in his

0:26:06 > 0:26:08Art Deco living room.

0:26:08 > 0:26:11So, I want three lines coming up from the skirting.

0:26:11 > 0:26:12OK, that's great.

0:26:12 > 0:26:16And here, we almost want to make out that we've got a chimney breast,

0:26:16 > 0:26:19- because we haven't got one, obviously.- OK, great, crack on.

0:26:19 > 0:26:21His controversial plan is to paint

0:26:21 > 0:26:25the skirting boards black, and detailing on the walls

0:26:25 > 0:26:27to give the impression of wood inlay.

0:26:27 > 0:26:30The black skirting is something that's going to have to be seen

0:26:30 > 0:26:34to kind of convince me. I always have white skirting in my home.

0:26:34 > 0:26:37But when someone says the complete opposite, and make it black, it's,

0:26:37 > 0:26:38like, "Wow, OK."

0:26:38 > 0:26:41I've never liked white skirting boards.

0:26:41 > 0:26:45I think when you add a little bit of something dark, it just gives that

0:26:45 > 0:26:48little bit of drama, it just, kind of, gives the room a grounding.

0:26:52 > 0:26:53- Hello.- Hello, Oliver.

0:26:53 > 0:26:55Hello.

0:26:55 > 0:26:57- Wow.- It's a lot of hard work going on.

0:26:57 > 0:26:59- Yes.- Three hours left.

0:27:00 > 0:27:03- There's just a lot of... - A lot to be done.

0:27:03 > 0:27:05..tape, and a lot of painting to be done.

0:27:05 > 0:27:09The homeowners wants to have a look at the black, or are you confident?

0:27:09 > 0:27:11Because you've done quite a lot for them to say no.

0:27:11 > 0:27:13Yeah, I just took a gamble there.

0:27:13 > 0:27:16You're very brave and I think it's good to, sort of,

0:27:16 > 0:27:18make people step out of their comfort zone.

0:27:18 > 0:27:22So, let's hope they love it, otherwise you'll be painting a lot!

0:27:24 > 0:27:26I'd to do this last time!

0:27:28 > 0:27:32Although time is running out for his homeowners to have a preview,

0:27:32 > 0:27:35his competitor can't resist a sneak peek.

0:27:35 > 0:27:38- Hi, how are you?- Hello, my lovely, how are you doing?

0:27:38 > 0:27:40Oh, bless you.

0:27:40 > 0:27:42- It's nice, isn't it?- It will be.

0:27:42 > 0:27:46- Hard work.- You have to see past all the tape and everything.- Course.

0:27:48 > 0:27:49- Take care.- You too.

0:27:49 > 0:27:50See you soon, bye.

0:27:50 > 0:27:54I just went to Oliver's room. It's really hard work, what he's doing.

0:27:54 > 0:27:57It's, you know, keeping the lines precise and what have you.

0:27:57 > 0:27:59I wouldn't personally do that.

0:27:59 > 0:28:03Seeing his room has actually given me a bit more confidence,

0:28:03 > 0:28:04if I'm honest.

0:28:07 > 0:28:11Buoyed up by her visit, it's full steam ahead in Shaida's spare room.

0:28:11 > 0:28:13- Dean, how's it going?- It's going OK.

0:28:13 > 0:28:16Yeah? Excellent. Just got that panel and that panel, isn't it?

0:28:16 > 0:28:19- And I'm moving the curtain pole for you now.- Excellent. Thank you.

0:28:19 > 0:28:23Much like Oliver, Shaida has her own smorgasbord of paint effects

0:28:23 > 0:28:24that she wants to do.

0:28:24 > 0:28:27The decorator's currently painting the blue shelf grey,

0:28:27 > 0:28:31because what we are going to do is create a paint effect.

0:28:31 > 0:28:33We're going to sand it down to bring the blue out.

0:28:33 > 0:28:35And I'm creating a paint effect with this sponge.

0:28:37 > 0:28:39We've got two hours and 15 minutes left.

0:28:39 > 0:28:42We've got to completely finish all of the painting in this room,

0:28:42 > 0:28:44attach the doorknobs to the units,

0:28:44 > 0:28:48and attach a mirror, and put up the curtains.

0:28:48 > 0:28:50And I need to then accessorise the room.

0:28:51 > 0:28:53Why do I make so much work for myself?

0:28:57 > 0:29:00And also not one to shy away from hard work,

0:29:00 > 0:29:04Oliver is busy making his bespoke cushions for his living room.

0:29:04 > 0:29:06The asbestos people have just rung.

0:29:06 > 0:29:09No asbestos, no trace, so we're safe to go back in there.

0:29:09 > 0:29:12- So, nothing at all?- No.- So, absolutely, we can just crack on?

0:29:12 > 0:29:14Absolutely safe, we have got the all-clear.

0:29:14 > 0:29:16I'm going to go up there and crack on.

0:29:17 > 0:29:20All that drama, wondering what's going to go on.

0:29:20 > 0:29:22Finally, we can actually crack on with the room.

0:29:22 > 0:29:24It means we are massively behind on it.

0:29:26 > 0:29:28I don't know if we are going to get it finished.

0:29:28 > 0:29:30At least we can make a start on it.

0:29:34 > 0:29:35And without delay,

0:29:35 > 0:29:39Oliver needs to get some of his team started on the bedroom to have any

0:29:39 > 0:29:41chance of finishing by tomorrow.

0:29:41 > 0:29:43Just want to check that this is the colour, this is what

0:29:43 > 0:29:46you expected it to be before I crack on and do the whole room.

0:29:46 > 0:29:48Absolutely perfect, yeah. Wonderful.

0:29:50 > 0:29:52- Hello.- Hello, Oliver.

0:29:52 > 0:29:53- Hello.- Well, what great news.

0:29:53 > 0:29:56I was feeling very disappointed that you weren't going to be able to

0:29:56 > 0:29:57access that second room.

0:29:57 > 0:30:00Oh, I know. The thing is, it is brilliant, the only problem is,

0:30:00 > 0:30:03obviously now we are massively behind on it.

0:30:03 > 0:30:06In real life, there are always things that go wrong on jobs.

0:30:06 > 0:30:09And somehow, you have to shift and manoeuvre people around.

0:30:09 > 0:30:11- So, you know, it's a good lesson. - Yes.

0:30:12 > 0:30:14- Thank you.- Bye.

0:30:20 > 0:30:23The judges are keen for both the designers to demonstrate

0:30:23 > 0:30:26their creativity on a level playing field.

0:30:26 > 0:30:28So, here's your creative challenge.

0:30:28 > 0:30:29Come up with something clever.

0:30:29 > 0:30:31You don't have to use all of them.

0:30:31 > 0:30:35So the competitors are being given identical items to artistically

0:30:35 > 0:30:37incorporate into their scheme.

0:30:37 > 0:30:38Ta-da.

0:30:38 > 0:30:42If I was to saw through there, drill through there and drill into that,

0:30:42 > 0:30:44that kind of makes almost, like, a goblet shape.

0:30:44 > 0:30:46Quite a Deco little trophy, actually.

0:30:46 > 0:30:50- If you just bolt them together, and that'll be cool, yeah?- OK.

0:30:52 > 0:30:54I want to use this as a candleholder.

0:30:54 > 0:30:58I'd like for these to go central in the table.

0:30:58 > 0:31:02But what I want is for the table to be a lot smaller.

0:31:02 > 0:31:03- Easily done.- OK, thank you, awesome.

0:31:03 > 0:31:07- See you in a bit. - Thank you very much.

0:31:07 > 0:31:10The results of both of their creative challenges will be judged

0:31:10 > 0:31:11in the rooms later.

0:31:22 > 0:31:25We've got half an hour, guys. Let's make every minute count.

0:31:25 > 0:31:29Oliver is about to hit his deadline to present his first room,

0:31:29 > 0:31:31the living room, to the judges.

0:31:32 > 0:31:33You are doing so well, Johnny.

0:31:34 > 0:31:38Unluckily, the black borders aren't going to plan.

0:31:38 > 0:31:42Peeling paint is just another problem for Oliver to deal with.

0:31:42 > 0:31:44Do you know what? I really don't need this.

0:31:44 > 0:31:46You know, it's, like, please,

0:31:46 > 0:31:49someone up there, do you know what I mean?

0:31:49 > 0:31:51Come on, smile down on me, please.

0:31:56 > 0:32:00They've got an uplighter, somewhere, I don't know where that went.

0:32:00 > 0:32:03- Hope it fits.- Easy on the black. - I'm going to need a hand with this.

0:32:03 > 0:32:06We need to get the coffee table, so can somebody put the screen up

0:32:06 > 0:32:10- for me, please?- Yeah, yeah.- We are just going like whirling dervishes,

0:32:10 > 0:32:13- we're all quite crazy.- Can we have some black paint, please, guys?

0:32:13 > 0:32:15- Brush. A brush.- A brush?

0:32:23 > 0:32:24On the mantel.

0:32:26 > 0:32:28- Is there much smears? - At the top, right at the top.

0:32:31 > 0:32:33Oliver's time is up.

0:32:33 > 0:32:36I'm just being fussy, like I want more plants, and I want more glass,

0:32:36 > 0:32:39and I want more flowers - but that's just me.

0:32:39 > 0:32:42You know, it's great, it's cool, it's nice.

0:32:42 > 0:32:44Yeah.

0:32:44 > 0:32:45It's the Elton John in me sometimes!

0:32:48 > 0:32:51Oliver was given the task of creating

0:32:51 > 0:32:54a 1920s gentleman's club-style lounge.

0:32:54 > 0:32:57Only a day ago, the room lacked character or style,

0:32:57 > 0:32:59despite the original features.

0:33:02 > 0:33:05Now it's got Gatsby-inspired glamour.

0:33:10 > 0:33:12The Art Deco theme is reflected

0:33:12 > 0:33:15in the salmon pink walls with black detailing.

0:33:17 > 0:33:19Oliver has revealed the original floor

0:33:19 > 0:33:22and he's added vintage armchairs,

0:33:22 > 0:33:23treated with fire-retardant spray

0:33:23 > 0:33:26to make sure they comply with modern safety standards.

0:33:30 > 0:33:33His ingenious screen hides the modern TV.

0:33:33 > 0:33:35And era-appropriate styling

0:33:35 > 0:33:38transports the room back to the roaring '20s.

0:33:42 > 0:33:45All of a sudden, it just all fell into place.

0:33:45 > 0:33:48And it's, like, boom, it's done.

0:33:50 > 0:33:55- He's good.- Sophisticated, Art Deco...- Gentleman's club.

0:33:55 > 0:33:58I love the Martini bar here, the two club chairs.

0:33:58 > 0:34:02He's got that incredible, eclectic way of doing something.

0:34:02 > 0:34:05It's got an edge. I think the screen's fantastic.

0:34:05 > 0:34:07- The screen's ingenious. - It's really clever.

0:34:07 > 0:34:10What a clever idea about hiding a TV.

0:34:10 > 0:34:12- Fantastic.- And, do you know, so easy to make,

0:34:12 > 0:34:14cos all it is is a few panels of MDF.

0:34:14 > 0:34:16I love the texture that he's done.

0:34:16 > 0:34:19It's kind of like this matt black, which links into the walls,

0:34:19 > 0:34:23which also, such a clever way for people to, sort of,

0:34:23 > 0:34:26put panelling in a room, make it look more authentic,

0:34:26 > 0:34:28but with a slightly modern edge to it.

0:34:28 > 0:34:32I'm not sure about that sofa being pushed in that corner.

0:34:32 > 0:34:34I would have quite enjoyed the idea

0:34:34 > 0:34:37of the sofa sitting here, in front of the fireplace.

0:34:37 > 0:34:40But the other thing which is a bit odd -

0:34:40 > 0:34:43it's a bit "Mrs Haversham old wedding dress" -

0:34:43 > 0:34:45are those net curtains.

0:34:45 > 0:34:48They are certainly not what you see in a gentleman's club.

0:34:48 > 0:34:51- Let's sit in one of these chairs. - I need the martini there.

0:34:51 > 0:34:53You can pretend.

0:34:53 > 0:34:54Cheers.

0:34:56 > 0:34:58That creative challenge?

0:34:58 > 0:35:00- Yeah.- I mean, to be honest,

0:35:00 > 0:35:03probably could have done something a little bit more.

0:35:03 > 0:35:05I think he's been under a lot of pressure

0:35:05 > 0:35:09because of the whole situation of being delayed. I think he's done

0:35:09 > 0:35:11- a pretty good job here.- Fair enough.

0:35:11 > 0:35:15Oliver was supposed to show the homeowners a piece of the black,

0:35:15 > 0:35:19and time didn't allow. And he's just motored on and finished it.

0:35:19 > 0:35:22It is a very big statement piece in the room.

0:35:22 > 0:35:26I see the logic of it, but will these homeowners like it?

0:35:26 > 0:35:27I'm not sure.

0:35:28 > 0:35:31The homeowners' opinion will be taken into consideration

0:35:31 > 0:35:34by the judges when they make their final decision.

0:35:34 > 0:35:37I have followed their brief. I've slipped a little bit of myself

0:35:37 > 0:35:40in there, you know, with the black skirting boards and stuff.

0:35:40 > 0:35:43I've taken a bit of a punt, bit of a gamble, but it's good.

0:35:43 > 0:35:44It's a nice room.

0:35:47 > 0:35:48Amazing.

0:35:50 > 0:35:52This isn't our flat, is it?

0:35:52 > 0:35:53It's not the same place.

0:35:55 > 0:35:57You wanted Art Deco, you've got Art Deco.

0:35:57 > 0:35:59Wow.

0:36:00 > 0:36:03- Sorry.- Are you OK?

0:36:03 > 0:36:05This is brilliant.

0:36:05 > 0:36:07I always wanted to reveal the floorboards.

0:36:07 > 0:36:10And the black -

0:36:10 > 0:36:13that works. It's perfect.

0:36:13 > 0:36:14So, does it answer the brief?

0:36:14 > 0:36:17I think he's gone slightly beyond.

0:36:17 > 0:36:19It is that opulence,

0:36:19 > 0:36:22it is that sophisticated gentleman's club that we were looking for.

0:36:22 > 0:36:26It is really not a presentation of Art Deco, it feels like Art Deco.

0:36:29 > 0:36:31Shaida's time is running out,

0:36:31 > 0:36:33so she's adding some final flourishes to her spare room.

0:36:40 > 0:36:43- SHE GASPS - Oh, what a shame.

0:36:45 > 0:36:47And her time is up.

0:36:47 > 0:36:50Now that the room has come together, I am so pleased.

0:36:50 > 0:36:53- Really pleased.- Shaida's brief

0:36:53 > 0:36:57was to design a light and airy guest bedroom

0:36:57 > 0:37:00with an English country-garden feel and plenty of storage.

0:37:02 > 0:37:03Yesterday, it was cluttered, crammed,

0:37:03 > 0:37:05and completely lacking in any style.

0:37:09 > 0:37:11Now it's a storage heaven.

0:37:11 > 0:37:14Shaida has built in a chest of drawers

0:37:14 > 0:37:17embellished with textured wallpaper,

0:37:17 > 0:37:20using various paint effects on the wardrobes and the shelving.

0:37:22 > 0:37:26To make the room dual-purpose, she's added a folding bed

0:37:26 > 0:37:30and finished off the scheme with some Moorish touches.

0:37:32 > 0:37:35I'm actually really excited to hear the feedback from the judges

0:37:35 > 0:37:37when they see what I've done with it.

0:37:42 > 0:37:43This has come a long way.

0:37:43 > 0:37:47- It certainly has.- Her accessorising is always perfect.

0:37:47 > 0:37:50- Really good storage. - It's very good storage.

0:37:50 > 0:37:54Fitted furniture is really expensive to do.

0:37:54 > 0:37:56So what she's done really cleverly

0:37:56 > 0:37:58is actually get an old set of drawers,

0:37:58 > 0:38:01and then she's set it into these simple MDF boxes,

0:38:01 > 0:38:04which most people could make and save a fortune.

0:38:04 > 0:38:08Just to give it that little edge, she's used a pressed wallpaper,

0:38:08 > 0:38:10so it is also giving it texture.

0:38:10 > 0:38:12I think it's really effective.

0:38:12 > 0:38:15It's clever. She's totally done something brilliant here.

0:38:15 > 0:38:17But the interesting thing is it's very Moorish again.

0:38:17 > 0:38:19And I think she's got one style.

0:38:19 > 0:38:22I mean, the lights that are hanging here are very Moorish,

0:38:22 > 0:38:24this is Moorish, the cushion covers.

0:38:24 > 0:38:29I don't mind that, because I think what she's done is really exciting.

0:38:29 > 0:38:32I like the look. Let's see what the homeowners are going to say.

0:38:32 > 0:38:34We like it, we think it's a great style,

0:38:34 > 0:38:36but we know it's not to brief.

0:38:42 > 0:38:43Oh, wow.

0:38:45 > 0:38:46Oh, wow.

0:38:47 > 0:38:50- This is VERY different.- I did not think it would look like this.

0:38:50 > 0:38:52I love the colours.

0:38:52 > 0:38:54I can't believe how much storage she's made.

0:38:54 > 0:38:56What about the style of it? It doesn't really feel

0:38:56 > 0:39:00- VERY English country garden.- We can never put our finger on exactly

0:39:00 > 0:39:04what we liked. We knew what we didn't like, and there's nothing

0:39:04 > 0:39:07here that I don't like, so I think Shaida, ten ticks, two thumbs up,

0:39:07 > 0:39:09I just love the room so much.

0:39:11 > 0:39:13So, we've seen two rooms that they've done now.

0:39:13 > 0:39:18And I have to admit, I think it's a really close call but for completely

0:39:18 > 0:39:20- different reasons.- No, I agree.

0:39:20 > 0:39:24Shaida is ingenious in terms of the way that she pulls things together,

0:39:24 > 0:39:27regardless of whether it is quite Moorish and maybe is slightly

0:39:27 > 0:39:29off-brand of what the homeowners wanted.

0:39:29 > 0:39:33And Oliver has created something that is really fantastic.

0:39:33 > 0:39:34Both finished on time.

0:39:34 > 0:39:36Both finished in budget.

0:39:36 > 0:39:39But also remember, we were looking at Oliver's main room,

0:39:39 > 0:39:41but we were looking at Shaida's second room.

0:39:41 > 0:39:45You're absolutely right. You know, you can't make a call on it

0:39:45 > 0:39:47until you've seen both of them having done the same rooms,

0:39:47 > 0:39:50because a bigger room is much easier, let's face it,

0:39:50 > 0:39:51than a small room like that.

0:39:54 > 0:39:56It's approaching the end of day two,

0:39:56 > 0:39:59and both designers are pulling out all the stops.

0:39:59 > 0:40:01It's been a lot more busy than it was yesterday.

0:40:01 > 0:40:05And now we've just got one more room left to finish off tomorrow morning.

0:40:05 > 0:40:08Still got quite a bit to do, but we're getting there.

0:40:10 > 0:40:11I've marked out your bed head here.

0:40:11 > 0:40:14Yes. Perfect. Tomorrow, we'll do the guest room.

0:40:14 > 0:40:17I think we're going to have to go at a furious pace from the offset.

0:40:17 > 0:40:20That's all I can do is just try. You can't say any fairer than that.

0:40:24 > 0:40:27- Are you OK? - Yes, thank you, how are you feeling?

0:40:27 > 0:40:31Yeah, it's...it's been really up and down for me today, you know?

0:40:31 > 0:40:34I had massive disappointments and things out of my control.

0:40:34 > 0:40:37It's make or break tomorrow, isn't it, at this stage of everything?

0:40:37 > 0:40:41- Yeah.- And I certainly don't want to go home yet.

0:40:41 > 0:40:43- Yeah.- How about you? - Still got a bit to do,

0:40:43 > 0:40:46but I'm confident that I'll be able to get it all done.

0:40:46 > 0:40:49You know, we're just going guns a-blazing, you know?

0:41:07 > 0:41:09It's the last day.

0:41:09 > 0:41:12But will it be Shaida or Oliver who gets through to the semifinals?

0:41:14 > 0:41:16There's no holding back,

0:41:16 > 0:41:18as Oliver gets straight to work on his small guest room.

0:41:18 > 0:41:20Morning, guys. All right?

0:41:20 > 0:41:24- Yeah.- Right, so, you're cracking on with the painting.

0:41:24 > 0:41:26- What about the door frame? - Leave that.

0:41:26 > 0:41:28We're already against the clock,

0:41:28 > 0:41:30so we've just got to keep going.

0:41:30 > 0:41:33Here we are. Last day.

0:41:33 > 0:41:36I sat in the morning at 5am, and I did another list.

0:41:36 > 0:41:38- THEY LAUGH - OK?

0:41:38 > 0:41:41It's competition time. It is head-to-head today.

0:41:41 > 0:41:42I'm still confident.

0:41:46 > 0:41:49Over in Oliver's guest room, the decorator is busy putting up

0:41:49 > 0:41:52the Art Deco-inspired wallpaper, which will frame the bed head.

0:41:54 > 0:41:55While out in the garden,

0:41:55 > 0:41:58Oliver is in the process of transforming two bedside tables.

0:41:58 > 0:42:03I've managed to get two G Plan little chest of drawers.

0:42:03 > 0:42:06Obviously, they're from the 1960s, and not quite correct,

0:42:06 > 0:42:09so I'm just going to spray-glue the fronts,

0:42:09 > 0:42:11cover them in some mock croc,

0:42:11 > 0:42:14just to give them a sort of touch of luxury,

0:42:14 > 0:42:17bearing in mind they probably would have used real crocodile in those

0:42:17 > 0:42:20days. This is a great way to adapt furniture you have at home.

0:42:20 > 0:42:22It's really quick and it's really affordable.

0:42:22 > 0:42:24I mean, I got several metres of this,

0:42:24 > 0:42:28and I think it comes to something like under £20.

0:42:29 > 0:42:31Oliver's had quite a tough time.

0:42:31 > 0:42:34Yeah, poor old Oliver. But, do you know what? He just got on with it.

0:42:34 > 0:42:37But he's answered the brief of gentlemen's study,

0:42:37 > 0:42:40but he hasn't overdone it, and I think that's really good.

0:42:40 > 0:42:42So what are you demanding from him for his second room?

0:42:42 > 0:42:45I really want to see something a little bit different.

0:42:45 > 0:42:48It's a guest bedroom, so I want to see him be a little bit more daring,

0:42:48 > 0:42:52and maybe even do something that's quite rich and elaborate in design.

0:42:54 > 0:42:57In Shaida's living room, there's a buzz of activity.

0:42:57 > 0:42:59I have still got quite a bit to do.

0:42:59 > 0:43:02But we will finish on time.

0:43:02 > 0:43:05My main concern is the painting,

0:43:05 > 0:43:07because I need that to dry in order for me

0:43:07 > 0:43:10to start accessorising the shelves.

0:43:13 > 0:43:17As part of her homage to the homeowners' butterfly artwork,

0:43:17 > 0:43:19it's being mimicked in the wallpaper going up...

0:43:19 > 0:43:23- All of this goes in, perfect. - Yeah, OK.

0:43:23 > 0:43:25..and the matching curtains.

0:43:25 > 0:43:28They have got some subtle butterfly prints on there.

0:43:28 > 0:43:31And even cool, calm Shaida is feeling a bit fluttery.

0:43:31 > 0:43:33I'm feeling really anxious and nervous.

0:43:33 > 0:43:35Feeling like I've got butterflies in my stomach.

0:43:35 > 0:43:39And I've only got a few hours to get done. I'm just, like, "Uu-urgh!"

0:43:39 > 0:43:41A challenging two days for our designers.

0:43:41 > 0:43:43- How's Shaida shaping up? - She's done really well.

0:43:43 > 0:43:47My concern is that she LOVES this Moorish look.

0:43:47 > 0:43:49You were worried about that, weren't you, whether she was going

0:43:49 > 0:43:51- to be a one-trick pony?- I mean,

0:43:51 > 0:43:55she's good, and what she produces is good. But it's just the same.

0:43:55 > 0:43:57I'm hoping that that main living room is going to be

0:43:57 > 0:44:00her jewel in the crown. We're seeing the beginnings

0:44:00 > 0:44:01of something really good,

0:44:01 > 0:44:05because she's got the spatial layout absolutely spot-on.

0:44:09 > 0:44:11Oliver's time is almost up,

0:44:11 > 0:44:13and he still needs to make his padded headboard...

0:44:15 > 0:44:16..and cushions.

0:44:16 > 0:44:20Ordinarily, at home, I'd get a tape measure out and I'd proper measure.

0:44:20 > 0:44:22There's no time, do you know what I mean?

0:44:22 > 0:44:23So I'm doing it all by guesswork.

0:44:23 > 0:44:26I was doing great until I realised that actually I've sewn

0:44:26 > 0:44:29this piece of fabric all the way wrong way round,

0:44:29 > 0:44:32so now I've got to unpick it all and start all over again.

0:44:39 > 0:44:41HE CHUCKLES

0:44:42 > 0:44:45So, we've got half an hour, apparently.

0:44:45 > 0:44:46Jeez.

0:44:46 > 0:44:49Can we get the wardrobe up, please?

0:44:49 > 0:44:50Excuse me.

0:44:53 > 0:44:54Oh, for...

0:44:59 > 0:45:01Have we put the rug down? Oh, we haven't, have we?

0:45:05 > 0:45:07We only see a little bit of it.

0:45:07 > 0:45:09Oliver's 48 hours are up.

0:45:09 > 0:45:11That's it. I've kind of done everything.

0:45:11 > 0:45:14That's it, guys, guys, we've done it, we've done all of it.

0:45:14 > 0:45:16Right, good luck, well done.

0:45:16 > 0:45:18- Good luck, Oliver.- See you later.

0:45:20 > 0:45:22Do you know what? It's madness, really, you know,

0:45:22 > 0:45:25cos I didn't actually find out that I was actually going to be even

0:45:25 > 0:45:28down to do this room, or do anything with this room,

0:45:28 > 0:45:31sort of since yesterday afternoon.

0:45:32 > 0:45:36Really, to consider we've done it in such a short space of time,

0:45:36 > 0:45:40you know, it looks really lovely. I'm so proud. I really am.

0:45:40 > 0:45:43Oliver's brief was to create a functional spare bedroom

0:45:43 > 0:45:45in an Art Deco style.

0:45:47 > 0:45:50Two days ago, what this small space lacked in function,

0:45:50 > 0:45:51it made up for in clutter.

0:45:54 > 0:45:56Now it's a glamorous guest room.

0:46:01 > 0:46:05Oliver has added a pull-out guest bed covered with sumptuous cushions.

0:46:07 > 0:46:11He framed 1920s-inspired wallpaper to create a backdrop

0:46:11 > 0:46:12for the bed head.

0:46:15 > 0:46:17And a vintage walnut cupboard adds storage.

0:46:18 > 0:46:21While the mock-croc cabinets bring a little luxury.

0:46:24 > 0:46:26Kelly said to me, you know, you need to plan.

0:46:26 > 0:46:29And I thought I had done that - well, I HAD done that!

0:46:29 > 0:46:32I dread to think how things would have turned out if I didn't actually

0:46:32 > 0:46:36have any planning. So, I guess she certainly was right.

0:46:36 > 0:46:37Wow.

0:46:39 > 0:46:44- Opulent.- Definitely very opulent. - Art Deco.- Very Art Deco.

0:46:44 > 0:46:45This is quite clever, isn't it?

0:46:45 > 0:46:47By just putting a bit of beading around.

0:46:47 > 0:46:51- Love that.- Nicely mitred in that, sort of, slightly Art Deco shape.

0:46:51 > 0:46:53It sort of fits.

0:46:53 > 0:46:55And I LOVE that wallpaper.

0:46:55 > 0:46:57I must say, I do love the colour of the walls.

0:46:57 > 0:47:01I think it's one of those scenarios where, if you go slightly darker

0:47:01 > 0:47:04and it's a small room, it makes it feel very cosy.

0:47:04 > 0:47:07On top of that, also, by using a brown mock croc,

0:47:07 > 0:47:11he is just putting an air of masculinity into this room.

0:47:11 > 0:47:15Cos it's quite...a pretty feminine room for two boys.

0:47:15 > 0:47:18- No, it is.- Yeah.- Only problem.

0:47:19 > 0:47:22What, you mean the clash of patterns, and that cheap zebra?

0:47:22 > 0:47:25Absolutely no need for that zebra print.

0:47:25 > 0:47:27I don't think this rug goes in here.

0:47:27 > 0:47:31My gripe is that the brief is opulence and Art Deco,

0:47:31 > 0:47:35and in the Deco period they loved using pelmets.

0:47:35 > 0:47:37And I'm looking up there, and it's just not...

0:47:37 > 0:47:39it's just not pleating well.

0:47:39 > 0:47:42- I like.- Right, I don't, I really don't.

0:47:42 > 0:47:44I'd hate all that bunching fabric.

0:47:44 > 0:47:49Our concern, it might be a little bit too much of an Art Deco theme.

0:47:49 > 0:47:50Well, it IS, isn't it?

0:47:50 > 0:47:53But I think, overall, he's put his own twist on it.

0:47:53 > 0:47:56By not putting the pelmet up and not doing the obvious things,

0:47:56 > 0:47:58I think he's done OK.

0:47:59 > 0:48:02But will it be too much Art Deco for our homeowners?

0:48:05 > 0:48:07- Wow.- Oh, my word.

0:48:07 > 0:48:09- Wow.- How different could that be?

0:48:12 > 0:48:14Faux croc, the faux croc.

0:48:14 > 0:48:16Oh, yes. That really, really works.

0:48:16 > 0:48:18I was worried it was going to be too shiny, you know?

0:48:18 > 0:48:19I think it really is going to work.

0:48:22 > 0:48:25Shaida's time is coming to an end,

0:48:25 > 0:48:27but she still needs to put together the second part

0:48:27 > 0:48:29- of her creative challenge. - What do you think, guys?

0:48:29 > 0:48:33- What do you think?- A butterfly mobile.- What do you think?

0:48:33 > 0:48:35Come on, guys, man. Come on, guys!

0:48:35 > 0:48:38It's meant to be, like, "Wow!"

0:48:38 > 0:48:41Creative challenge complete, it's time to dress the room.

0:48:41 > 0:48:44Stuart, Stuart? I need this to go up here, yeah?

0:48:44 > 0:48:45Central.

0:48:47 > 0:48:48Oh, no, no.

0:48:53 > 0:48:55No, that's too heavy.

0:48:56 > 0:48:59- Thanks, guys. - And her 48 hours are up.

0:48:59 > 0:49:01Well done.

0:49:02 > 0:49:04Done.

0:49:04 > 0:49:06Shaida's brief was for a bright, classic,

0:49:06 > 0:49:09modern room with hints of nature and mixed patterns.

0:49:11 > 0:49:1348 hours ago, the room had plenty of potential,

0:49:13 > 0:49:15but lacked a cohesive style.

0:49:17 > 0:49:21Now, it's been given a fresh lease of life.

0:49:21 > 0:49:23Shaida has rearranged the layout

0:49:23 > 0:49:26so the dining table takes pride of place,

0:49:26 > 0:49:28while the TV is less noticeable.

0:49:29 > 0:49:33A theme of butterflies adorns the walls and furnishings.

0:49:34 > 0:49:38And bespoke shelving offers plenty of storage.

0:49:40 > 0:49:44So, today, basically, I'll be going home, or I'll be staying.

0:49:44 > 0:49:48And I need to just breathe and, you know, take a step back.

0:49:48 > 0:49:50Oh!

0:49:50 > 0:49:51Wow!

0:49:51 > 0:49:55Well, they asked for modern, bright and classic,

0:49:55 > 0:49:58- and it is.- I'm pleasantly surprised.

0:49:58 > 0:50:02It's lovely, isn't it? Walking through this room and having that

0:50:02 > 0:50:05as the view, rather than a TV sitting in the corner,

0:50:05 > 0:50:07really makes it work for me.

0:50:07 > 0:50:10- Shaida understands about good layouts.- Mm.

0:50:10 > 0:50:14And I think she's been clever in the way she's created the different

0:50:14 > 0:50:17levels. You've got the TV in there.

0:50:17 > 0:50:22I like it also when boxes are made around something that exists.

0:50:22 > 0:50:23It's a brilliant idea.

0:50:23 > 0:50:26And I am so pleasantly surprised and happy

0:50:26 > 0:50:30that we don't have any paint effects, just pure white.

0:50:30 > 0:50:33I could have done with a little bit of colour, maybe, in these.

0:50:34 > 0:50:36You know, I need some.

0:50:37 > 0:50:40Not so happy with that. This, to me, looks unfinished.

0:50:40 > 0:50:42There is a butterfly theme going on here.

0:50:42 > 0:50:45Look, we've got more butterflies.

0:50:45 > 0:50:47There's this matchy-matchy thing, as well, have you noticed?

0:50:50 > 0:50:52That's too high street, frankly.

0:50:52 > 0:50:54The judges also need to assess

0:50:54 > 0:50:58how well Shaida's creative challenge integrates into the room.

0:51:00 > 0:51:03Oh! It's like cowbells, I think, isn't it?

0:51:03 > 0:51:05And it's got spray-paint on it.

0:51:05 > 0:51:08I just think this is a bit of a copout.

0:51:08 > 0:51:12I think the only thing that gets close to being decent

0:51:12 > 0:51:14is these candleholders.

0:51:14 > 0:51:17And, I suppose, there are times when you might need to have candleholders

0:51:17 > 0:51:19- that don't fall over. - I don't mind that at all.

0:51:19 > 0:51:22The overall feeling of this room really works for me.

0:51:22 > 0:51:25I think she has delivered what the homeowners want.

0:51:25 > 0:51:30She has. She's followed a very complicated brief with a lot of ask,

0:51:30 > 0:51:31and she's kind of covered it.

0:51:33 > 0:51:36It's time for the homeowners to see their completed room.

0:51:37 > 0:51:40- Ta-da.- Whoa.

0:51:40 > 0:51:43- Wow.- It's like a completely different room.

0:51:43 > 0:51:45I love all the little touches she's put in.

0:51:45 > 0:51:48And I don't think the wall is too overpowering.

0:51:48 > 0:51:52And, also, the all-important TV angle is, actually, nowhere near

0:51:52 > 0:51:54- as bad as I thought it might be. - Do you want to test it out?

0:51:54 > 0:51:57Do you want to sit down, make sure you can see?

0:51:58 > 0:52:01THEY LAUGH

0:52:01 > 0:52:03- That's about right. - I'm really, really happy.

0:52:04 > 0:52:07- It's amazing.- All right, fabulous!

0:52:10 > 0:52:14From Shaida, you really wanted to see if she was going to be

0:52:14 > 0:52:19adaptable, flexible, do something other than her stock Moorish style.

0:52:19 > 0:52:23- Did you see that?- Well, we sort of did, and we didn't.

0:52:23 > 0:52:26In one of the rooms, it was completely the same.

0:52:26 > 0:52:29Very Moorish. But in the larger living room, for me,

0:52:29 > 0:52:30she really turned a corner.

0:52:30 > 0:52:32What we're seeing with Shaida

0:52:32 > 0:52:35is that she's a really adaptable designer.

0:52:35 > 0:52:37It pulled together and looked right.

0:52:37 > 0:52:40Even though we had some toile de Jouy

0:52:40 > 0:52:43against very brightly coloured chairs,

0:52:43 > 0:52:47against this sort of...quite chintzy looking butterfly wallpaper

0:52:47 > 0:52:49on the back wall, it sort of worked.

0:52:49 > 0:52:52And her space-planning was extraordinary.

0:52:52 > 0:52:55- Sounds like she's got the full package.- Yeah, maybe over-pleasing.

0:52:55 > 0:52:58If she's going to go for this pattern clash,

0:52:58 > 0:53:00then REALLY go for it.

0:53:00 > 0:53:04The wall, which was a panel behind the sofa, was too polite.

0:53:04 > 0:53:07She should have just filled that wall with a pattern. But, instead,

0:53:07 > 0:53:09she just made it a bit timid because she was a bit unsure

0:53:09 > 0:53:12- what the homeowners might think. - I mean, they love the room.

0:53:12 > 0:53:15- Brilliant, I'm pleased. - It's fantastic news.

0:53:15 > 0:53:17Now, Oliver was in his element with that brief.

0:53:17 > 0:53:20Shaida had a very, very loose brief,

0:53:20 > 0:53:23whereas this one, with the Art Deco,

0:53:23 > 0:53:25it was very specific and a very, very tight brief.

0:53:25 > 0:53:30I'm concerned that this Art Deco dictated a lot to him.

0:53:30 > 0:53:33He could have been a bit more inventive with the Art Deco theme,

0:53:33 > 0:53:34- updated it a bit?- Yeah, exactly.

0:53:34 > 0:53:37I just wanted to see maybe a little bit of something fresh.

0:53:37 > 0:53:40I didn't want to walk into a historic sort of room,

0:53:40 > 0:53:43I wanted to see if there was a way that you could rip up Art Deco

0:53:43 > 0:53:46and throw it back together again and have something new.

0:53:46 > 0:53:48- Oh, no.- No?

0:53:48 > 0:53:52I, sort of, disagree, because he has a style.

0:53:52 > 0:53:55He's already got something that he owns

0:53:55 > 0:53:58and he puts his spin every time - that I've seen it -

0:53:58 > 0:54:00on the brief that's been given to him.

0:54:00 > 0:54:05And to do a Deco gentleman's club, that's quite a big ask.

0:54:05 > 0:54:09But, I think, he's done it in a way that has just got that edge,

0:54:09 > 0:54:11that eclectic look.

0:54:11 > 0:54:14And how about the old creative chaos that you saw in the first round?

0:54:14 > 0:54:17He had a threat of asbestos in the spare room to deal with,

0:54:17 > 0:54:20and he did it. He did it with utter calm.

0:54:20 > 0:54:22That is a sign of a good designer.

0:54:22 > 0:54:26You know the answer - the homeowners adored it.

0:54:26 > 0:54:29Adored it, adored it - we had tears in one room,

0:54:29 > 0:54:30we had smiles in the other.

0:54:30 > 0:54:35Those guys are going to sit there every night drinking martinis,

0:54:35 > 0:54:36and just loving it.

0:54:36 > 0:54:38You've got two very strong designers.

0:54:38 > 0:54:41Both of whom have learnt and developed from the first round,

0:54:41 > 0:54:43we've got four very happy homeowners -

0:54:43 > 0:54:44who are you going to pick?

0:54:44 > 0:54:48It's not easy and I'm not sure if we are even in agreement yet, actually.

0:54:48 > 0:54:52No, I don't think so, because I think they've both come so far,

0:54:52 > 0:54:56they both equally have extraordinary talents.

0:54:56 > 0:54:58It's very, very tough.

0:55:01 > 0:55:04This is probably the worst part of this whole process,

0:55:04 > 0:55:07it's the waiting. These little voices start speaking to you

0:55:07 > 0:55:10in the back of your mind, like, "Oh, you could have done this different,

0:55:10 > 0:55:11"or you could have done that."

0:55:11 > 0:55:13You're starting to second-guess yourself.

0:55:13 > 0:55:15- SHAIDA:- This competition is very important to me.

0:55:15 > 0:55:18Something that I've always really, really passionately wanted to do.

0:55:21 > 0:55:25Art Deco is such a powerful and distinctive style of architecture.

0:55:25 > 0:55:28It can faze even the most professional of designers.

0:55:28 > 0:55:30But you two have risen to the challenge.

0:55:30 > 0:55:34You've both done incredibly well to get through to this point,

0:55:34 > 0:55:37but only one you can go through to the next.

0:55:37 > 0:55:40But you should both be extremely proud of yourselves.

0:55:40 > 0:55:43These two have "ummed and ahed", and debated and argued,

0:55:43 > 0:55:46but they've made their decision. The designer going through to the

0:55:46 > 0:55:49semifinals is...

0:55:58 > 0:55:59..Oliver.

0:56:01 > 0:56:04- So, Shaida, I'm afraid it's bye-bye.- Well done.

0:56:04 > 0:56:06Oh, my God!

0:56:06 > 0:56:07Thank you so much.

0:56:07 > 0:56:11- Congratulations, go on.- You did the most brilliant job. You really have.

0:56:11 > 0:56:15But this might not be goodbye, as in a twist, Kelly and Dan will be

0:56:15 > 0:56:19bringing back an eliminated designer as a wild card for the semifinals.

0:56:19 > 0:56:21And we were blown away with what you did.

0:56:21 > 0:56:24Our decision today was very tough, but I think in this instance

0:56:24 > 0:56:27Shaida was just a little bit behind Oliver.

0:56:27 > 0:56:29But it doesn't mean to say that she's not good.

0:56:29 > 0:56:31She's VERY good. She listens,

0:56:31 > 0:56:33and she is an incredibly authentic designer.

0:56:33 > 0:56:35Thank you so much.

0:56:35 > 0:56:37- Oh!- It's beautiful.

0:56:37 > 0:56:41For us, you deserve to win, cos this is brilliant.

0:56:41 > 0:56:45This has been an amazing opportunity for me to get my foot into interior

0:56:45 > 0:56:48design and actually continue from now on.

0:56:48 > 0:56:49Thank you.

0:56:51 > 0:56:52No need for three rugs!

0:56:54 > 0:56:55'Absolutely amazed.'

0:56:55 > 0:56:58I just... I'm elated, you know?

0:56:58 > 0:57:02I keep... I do this all the time, I keep thinking, "That's it, end of,

0:57:02 > 0:57:05"end of, finished." You know, "You've done your time."

0:57:05 > 0:57:08But then it's, like, "You've done it again!"

0:57:08 > 0:57:11It's madness. It's absolutely crazy.

0:57:11 > 0:57:14- You won!- Congratulations.- That's brilliant.- Well done.- Well done.

0:57:14 > 0:57:17Well deserved. That's brilliant.

0:57:17 > 0:57:21Oliver went through because he showed us that he can handle

0:57:21 > 0:57:23classic design perfectly.

0:57:23 > 0:57:26And he created, also, a wonderful mood in that space,

0:57:26 > 0:57:29which these guys are going to enjoy for many years to come.

0:57:29 > 0:57:31Congratulations. Go on.

0:57:31 > 0:57:34All credit has to go to Oliver.

0:57:34 > 0:57:37He knows how to design, he knows how to edit,

0:57:37 > 0:57:40he's very good at presenting, and he's good in a crisis.

0:57:40 > 0:57:42Winner of the whole thing?

0:57:43 > 0:57:45There's no reason why I can't.

0:57:45 > 0:57:47What do I want from Oliver in the next round?

0:57:47 > 0:57:49Well, it is the semifinals,

0:57:49 > 0:57:52and I just want to see if he can be a little bit more individualistic,

0:57:52 > 0:57:54and let his hair down.

0:57:55 > 0:57:58There's nothing like Art Deco to add a splash of Hollywood style

0:57:58 > 0:58:01to a home. Architect Reginald Toms knew exactly what he was doing

0:58:01 > 0:58:03here at Manor Court.

0:58:03 > 0:58:0680 years on, Art Deco remains as popular and fashionable as ever,

0:58:06 > 0:58:10inspiring modern-day designers like our own two, who've left their own

0:58:10 > 0:58:13little splash of glamour in these most stylish of flats.

0:58:17 > 0:58:19Judges, you've got three semifinalists,

0:58:19 > 0:58:22but my maths isn't that good, but I know you need to have four.

0:58:22 > 0:58:25Next time, one designer gets a second chance.

0:58:25 > 0:58:27- You see, I disagree. - Who's it going to be?

0:58:27 > 0:58:29- There's one that we're both very sure of.- Exactly.
