0:00:02 > 0:00:04We're in the midst of a low cost self-build revolution.

0:00:04 > 0:00:06We're building walls!

0:00:06 > 0:00:10It's harder than ever to get onto the housing ladder, so a few brave,

0:00:10 > 0:00:13ordinary people are resorting to the seemingly impossible...

0:00:13 > 0:00:16This gets the adrenaline going.

0:00:16 > 0:00:20..building their own home from scratch for less than £100,000.

0:00:22 > 0:00:25If we try to buy a house with that space, we couldn't afford it.

0:00:26 > 0:00:30Architect Piers Taylor, and me Kieran Long, are back

0:00:30 > 0:00:32and coming to the aid of six families

0:00:32 > 0:00:34attempting this toughest of challenges.

0:00:34 > 0:00:39- It's difficult looking at the budget and your bank account literally just going down.- Yeah.

0:00:39 > 0:00:41We'll try to help them with design dilemmas...

0:00:41 > 0:00:44You arrive at a blank wall. I mean, is this what you want?

0:00:44 > 0:00:46..challenge them to think bigger...

0:00:46 > 0:00:50It just inspires me to want to go home and crack on with it.

0:00:50 > 0:00:53..and search out innovative solutions that make

0:00:53 > 0:00:55the most of their meagre budgets.

0:00:57 > 0:00:58Whoa, look at that!

0:00:58 > 0:01:00We'll all be pushed to the limit...

0:01:00 > 0:01:01Oh, no!

0:01:01 > 0:01:06..as we attempt to turn these ordinary self builds into outstanding homes.

0:01:06 > 0:01:09If anyone thinks it's easy, they're an idiot!

0:01:09 > 0:01:13This time, Wajid and Anam attempt to build a colossal three-storey,

0:01:13 > 0:01:17six-bedroom house with anything but a standard finish.

0:01:17 > 0:01:21We've been to Dubai a lot. I want marble flooring.

0:01:21 > 0:01:24But will this family-run build bring them closer together,

0:01:24 > 0:01:26or rip them apart?

0:01:26 > 0:01:29I've had strong opposition from my project manager.

0:01:29 > 0:01:31What the hell is this?

0:01:31 > 0:01:32In the end it's my house.

0:01:49 > 0:01:52I'm in Burnley, on my way to meet Anam and Wajid.

0:01:52 > 0:01:57They've got an end-of-terrace plot in this world of terraced houses.

0:01:57 > 0:02:00But they're building a property that has to accommodate a very wide range of requirements.

0:02:00 > 0:02:03It's going to be a really big challenge.

0:02:07 > 0:02:11In Lancashire, the Khans are redefining the term "house share".

0:02:11 > 0:02:15Three generations live together in three knocked-through terraced houses.

0:02:17 > 0:02:20There are ten family members all under one roof.

0:02:20 > 0:02:23We are a very close, tight-knit family.

0:02:23 > 0:02:24Family means everything to me.

0:02:24 > 0:02:28Anam moved in when she married youngest son Wajid.

0:02:28 > 0:02:30We've been married for nearly two years.

0:02:30 > 0:02:34It was a typical arranged marriage,

0:02:34 > 0:02:38but I think now it's hard to imagine life without him.

0:02:40 > 0:02:45Wajid, a university lecturer, and Anam, a customer services manager,

0:02:45 > 0:02:47now want some space of their own.

0:02:47 > 0:02:50- We're expecting our first baby. - We are, yeah.

0:02:52 > 0:02:55It's always been his dream to make his own house,

0:02:55 > 0:02:58so we're hoping to get the build finished

0:02:58 > 0:03:02- before the baby comes. - I don't know about that.

0:03:02 > 0:03:04- We can do it. - Before the second baby comes.

0:03:05 > 0:03:11Wajid has been gifted the land on the end of the terrace by his parents.

0:03:11 > 0:03:13This bit here is a whole dining area.

0:03:13 > 0:03:16We're not having this wall here, so this wall is not there.

0:03:16 > 0:03:19To build on it they're gambling £70,000 pounds in savings

0:03:19 > 0:03:23and 30,000 in loans.

0:03:23 > 0:03:27They've already spent 15 grand on foundations and design fees.

0:03:27 > 0:03:31There's no endless budget. We have to make sure we stick to that.

0:03:31 > 0:03:35We just hope we can get it all finished in that much...

0:03:35 > 0:03:40But they have huge ambition for their £100K house and still

0:03:40 > 0:03:42haven't finalised the design.

0:03:42 > 0:03:45- You want four bedrooms, don't you? - Yeah, just four.- I want six.

0:03:47 > 0:03:49Right, we won't talk about that.

0:03:50 > 0:03:54I've never built a house before. I don't know anything about that.

0:03:54 > 0:03:58He likes to tell people what to do rather than do it himself.

0:03:58 > 0:04:00That's what leadership's about, isn't it?

0:04:08 > 0:04:11For novices without a clear plan,

0:04:11 > 0:04:14this build could easily spiral out of control.

0:04:14 > 0:04:16I need to find out if they're any closer to coming to

0:04:16 > 0:04:19an agreement on exactly what they are building.

0:04:21 > 0:04:23- Hi, there.- Hi, Kieran, how are you? Welcome.

0:04:23 > 0:04:26You must be thrilled to see some progress.

0:04:26 > 0:04:29- Yeah, real progress and it's exciting.- Very exciting.

0:04:29 > 0:04:32Still working on it. Changing our mind every day.

0:04:32 > 0:04:33Every hour.

0:04:34 > 0:04:38They can only afford a builder on site for 12 weeks.

0:04:38 > 0:04:40Changing their minds causes delays

0:04:40 > 0:04:43and that could mean they don't end up with a house at all.

0:04:43 > 0:04:45Tell me how many bedrooms you're planning.

0:04:45 > 0:04:51- Potentially six.- Wow.- I think maybe four or five bedrooms, but big bedrooms.

0:04:51 > 0:04:55- He wants more rooms, I want more space.- Right.

0:04:56 > 0:05:00Every additional room means more labour, finishes and money.

0:05:00 > 0:05:03A house this size will eat up their budget quickly.

0:05:03 > 0:05:07One thing Wajid and Anam do agree on is their dream of a

0:05:07 > 0:05:09three-storey building.

0:05:10 > 0:05:12It will be their home but also allow them

0:05:12 > 0:05:15to live communally at times with their wider family.

0:05:15 > 0:05:19Planning limitations mean the exterior will have to largely

0:05:19 > 0:05:21mimic the neighbouring family homes.

0:05:21 > 0:05:24Inside, and in spite of their family's requirements,

0:05:24 > 0:05:27they've gone for a fairly very conventional layout.

0:05:27 > 0:05:31A narrow hallway leads to a kitchen-diner.

0:05:31 > 0:05:34There's a large bathroom, an office

0:05:34 > 0:05:36and large reception room.

0:05:38 > 0:05:41Upstairs there's a further generous living space,

0:05:41 > 0:05:45plus three bedrooms with en suites and a family bathroom.

0:05:45 > 0:05:49On the top floor there are three additional bedrooms

0:05:49 > 0:05:50and further en suites.

0:05:52 > 0:05:54At 255 square metres,

0:05:54 > 0:05:58it'll be three times the size of its neighbours on this street.

0:05:58 > 0:06:00With just £100,000 to spend,

0:06:00 > 0:06:04it's an extraordinarily large build.

0:06:05 > 0:06:08But the ambition doesn't end there.

0:06:08 > 0:06:10Tell me about your taste

0:06:10 > 0:06:13and what your aspirations are in terms of design for the interior.

0:06:13 > 0:06:15I want a spacious house,

0:06:15 > 0:06:18I want marble flooring, we want underfloor heating.

0:06:18 > 0:06:22We've been to Dubai a lot and I think that's where we got the inspiration.

0:06:22 > 0:06:24That luxurious hotel room feel,

0:06:24 > 0:06:27which is a nice place to spend time.

0:06:27 > 0:06:32We have big dreams of making this a perfect home for us

0:06:32 > 0:06:34but I don't know how we're going to achieve it.

0:06:36 > 0:06:40Dubai luxury on their Burnley budget means they'll have to save money

0:06:40 > 0:06:42wherever possible.

0:06:42 > 0:06:45As a favour, Wajid's big brother Naim,

0:06:45 > 0:06:47has offered to project manage the build.

0:06:47 > 0:06:50He's got the unenviable task of delivering Wajid's expensive

0:06:50 > 0:06:53taste on his limited bank balance.

0:06:53 > 0:06:55It's a big responsibility.

0:06:55 > 0:06:58It's stressful because if we leave it to Wajid, he won't have a

0:06:58 > 0:07:02house for 100K, he'll be having a house for 200K, or 300K.

0:07:02 > 0:07:05He'll just go out and say, "Yeah, I like that, I'll buy it."

0:07:05 > 0:07:07These French doors look much nicer.

0:07:07 > 0:07:11- It will also have a heavy effect on our budget.- That's OK.

0:07:11 > 0:07:13Tell me what it's like working with these guys.

0:07:13 > 0:07:15Absolutely awful.

0:07:15 > 0:07:16LAUGHTER

0:07:16 > 0:07:19They want a door here, then they want one there, then one there,

0:07:19 > 0:07:22so we build a wall and they say, "Hold on, we don't want that."

0:07:22 > 0:07:24But I think it's good to be creative.

0:07:24 > 0:07:29Yeah, but you need to be creative BEFORE you've built a solid wall!

0:07:29 > 0:07:32Continually changing their minds means work is being done

0:07:32 > 0:07:34and then undone.

0:07:34 > 0:07:37They simply can't afford to make it up as they go along.

0:07:37 > 0:07:40Wajid, is this going to come in at under the £100,000 mark?

0:07:40 > 0:07:43- I think just about, yes.- I don't think that's realistic at all.

0:07:43 > 0:07:45I think we're going to go way over budget.

0:07:45 > 0:07:48The interior, the en suites, the marble.

0:07:48 > 0:07:52- I think they're looking at £125,000-£140,000.- Really?

0:07:52 > 0:07:56- I just don't understand why they want that.- I just think it's something different.

0:07:56 > 0:07:58As you walk in you want to get that feeling that it's not just

0:07:58 > 0:08:01a normal house, it's got the wow factor there.

0:08:06 > 0:08:10Wajid and Anam are thinking big and that's great, but this house

0:08:10 > 0:08:15has to do so much and they aspire to this luxurious finish.

0:08:15 > 0:08:17We've got to find a way to manage their expectations

0:08:17 > 0:08:21and achieve the finish they want for less than £100,000.

0:08:26 > 0:08:29Up another one, Joe. On the line.

0:08:31 > 0:08:35With Richie the builder only budgeted for another nine weeks

0:08:35 > 0:08:38to get all the structural work completed, the house is racing ahead.

0:08:40 > 0:08:44Naim is desperate for firm decisions on the final layout.

0:08:44 > 0:08:46They're just confused, to be honest with you.

0:08:46 > 0:08:50They're still chopping and changing, making up their minds and that.

0:08:51 > 0:08:54They've been altering their plans for months.

0:08:54 > 0:08:57To make matters more complicated, Wajid is a local councillor...

0:08:57 > 0:09:00Say cheese! Yay!

0:09:00 > 0:09:03..and also wants a grand space in the house

0:09:03 > 0:09:06big enough to use for his community work, too.

0:09:06 > 0:09:09A big motivation is to have a separate area

0:09:09 > 0:09:11for the political meetings

0:09:11 > 0:09:13and I do get a lot of visitors.

0:09:14 > 0:09:17It's all starting to cause friction on site.

0:09:17 > 0:09:20We've moved one doorway on the entrance hall.

0:09:20 > 0:09:21Yeah, that's one big change.

0:09:21 > 0:09:24The whole reception room and the kitchen is now open plan.

0:09:24 > 0:09:29We're waiting on the decision upstairs about windows.

0:09:29 > 0:09:31They need to sort that out before I get to it.

0:09:37 > 0:09:40Planning restrictions mean we can't change the external

0:09:40 > 0:09:41look of the house,

0:09:41 > 0:09:44but Piers Taylor must get Wajid and Anam away from the site

0:09:44 > 0:09:48and take them back to the first principles of what they are building.

0:09:48 > 0:09:51Until they revisit exactly what the house is for, they won't be able

0:09:51 > 0:09:54to make good decisions or take control of the site.

0:09:54 > 0:09:58At the moment Wajid and Anam are rushing headlong into this build

0:09:58 > 0:10:01and I am worried it's going to be really ordinary.

0:10:01 > 0:10:03And this is their one opportunity to build

0:10:03 > 0:10:05the house of their dreams for them.

0:10:05 > 0:10:07At the moment, my question is, who's designing this,

0:10:07 > 0:10:09who's controlling it?

0:10:09 > 0:10:12Wajid wants a grand and luxurious home,

0:10:12 > 0:10:14but Piers can't find much evidence of one here.

0:10:14 > 0:10:17When you turn up, how do you know

0:10:17 > 0:10:20it's the house of a local important person?

0:10:20 > 0:10:23He begins by looking at the entrance hall.

0:10:23 > 0:10:27Here you could have a fantastic lobby that you went into

0:10:27 > 0:10:31and you were received before you went into a reception.

0:10:31 > 0:10:33And actually do away with a corridor.

0:10:33 > 0:10:35You've stolen the space of the corridor into that room.

0:10:35 > 0:10:38I would do a set of double doors there

0:10:38 > 0:10:41and this will feel like a grand space.

0:10:41 > 0:10:43Maybe you need to flip the bathroom and staircase.

0:10:43 > 0:10:45This could be a beautifully detailed stair

0:10:45 > 0:10:48with a lovely handrail, which would be really nice.

0:10:51 > 0:10:55To improve the conventional arrival into the building, Piers' idea

0:10:55 > 0:11:00is to remove the narrow corridor and switch the bathroom and stairs.

0:11:00 > 0:11:04This would create a more generous and surprising light-filled space.

0:11:04 > 0:11:07It would also allow for an open, sweeping staircase.

0:11:07 > 0:11:10Double doors will also help add the touch of grandeur

0:11:10 > 0:11:12Wajid's looking for.

0:11:12 > 0:11:15Alterations must always be agreed with Building Control

0:11:15 > 0:11:17for layout and fire safety.

0:11:17 > 0:11:18I like that idea of the staircase.

0:11:18 > 0:11:20That is something we thought about

0:11:20 > 0:11:22but we've not been brave enough to come up with them.

0:11:22 > 0:11:26I'm curious that you say you need to be brave, because isn't this just

0:11:26 > 0:11:29how you go about process of deciding what your building should be like?

0:11:29 > 0:11:32Yeah, we just stuck to the safest option, I think,

0:11:32 > 0:11:34and our builder's a bit... He doesn't like changes.

0:11:34 > 0:11:37You can tell HIM, it's your house. You can make any changes you like.

0:11:37 > 0:11:41I think maybe I'm just trying to worry about the builders' feelings.

0:11:41 > 0:11:44Your builder isn't the designer. You're the designer here.

0:11:44 > 0:11:48The only problem I've got, the project manager is my older brother.

0:11:48 > 0:11:52- Culturally, the older brother has a very big say.- I can tell him, then.

0:11:52 > 0:11:55- I can present to him. - That might work.

0:12:00 > 0:12:02It's tricky having these conversations now,

0:12:02 > 0:12:05particularly when the momentum of a build is established.

0:12:05 > 0:12:07But they have to be had at some point,

0:12:07 > 0:12:08otherwise this will be a disaster.

0:12:08 > 0:12:12But importantly, the consequences of making these changes now

0:12:12 > 0:12:15are that they get a far better building for no more money.

0:12:17 > 0:12:20And this is Richie.

0:12:20 > 0:12:23- Hi, Richie.- Hello, mate.- How're you doing?- Nice to meet you.

0:12:23 > 0:12:25I've heard a lot about your work.

0:12:27 > 0:12:30''Liaising with the workforce has very a different dynamic

0:12:30 > 0:12:32'when the project manager's your brother.'

0:12:32 > 0:12:34So there's some good news and some bad.

0:12:34 > 0:12:37Give me the good, give the bad to them!

0:12:37 > 0:12:38LAUGHTER

0:12:39 > 0:12:43It's not just their future home at stake, it's family harmony too.

0:12:43 > 0:12:46- We flip the bathroom and stairs. - Put the stairs where the toilet is

0:12:46 > 0:12:49- and the toilet where the stairs are?- Yeah.

0:12:49 > 0:12:52- You're keeping the same up and downstairs?- Making the toilet smaller.- Right.

0:12:52 > 0:12:55But no wall between the stair and that reception room.

0:12:55 > 0:12:58It's all open plan. Are we losing the corridor wall, as well?

0:12:58 > 0:13:00We're losing the corridor wall, yeah.

0:13:00 > 0:13:04And then you make that opening bigger,

0:13:04 > 0:13:06so the only thing that needs unpicking is putting a bigger

0:13:06 > 0:13:10lintel in there to put a bigger opening between these two spaces.

0:13:12 > 0:13:15It's one small change. It's a better building.

0:13:15 > 0:13:17It's not a small change - I've already built it!

0:13:17 > 0:13:19That won't take long to take that lintel out.

0:13:19 > 0:13:21You show me how long it takes.

0:13:25 > 0:13:28Finally, Wajid and Anam have finalised a layout they are happy with.

0:13:28 > 0:13:31At the end of the day, it's what the guys tell me to do.

0:13:31 > 0:13:35- I'll do it, no problem. - Are you happy?- Happy.- Oh, good.- Yay!

0:13:38 > 0:13:41What I tried to do in there was represent Wajid and Anam,

0:13:41 > 0:13:43because I don't really have a sense this is their house.

0:13:43 > 0:13:46And there's this huge dynamic, the older brother syndrome,

0:13:46 > 0:13:49and Wajid is nervous about making changes.

0:13:49 > 0:13:52- You're going a foot and an inch? - Can we move it over a bit more?

0:13:52 > 0:13:55What's really important for me now is that they understand that

0:13:55 > 0:13:59they've got to take ownership of their house, their project.

0:14:08 > 0:14:10With key decisions made, the build progresses.

0:14:12 > 0:14:16The first floor walls have gone up and the front has been clad

0:14:16 > 0:14:18in natural stone costing £5,000.

0:14:20 > 0:14:23But there's still masses to do on this vast house.

0:14:27 > 0:14:30Rather than keeping an eye on the build,

0:14:30 > 0:14:32work commitments mean Wajid is absent for key stages.

0:14:32 > 0:14:35There's a lot happening at once.

0:14:35 > 0:14:37It's tough. It does get very difficult,

0:14:37 > 0:14:39and stressful at times.

0:14:42 > 0:14:46He's missing the biggest and most expensive day of the build so far.

0:14:46 > 0:14:51£8,000 of roof trusses have just arrived on site,

0:14:51 > 0:14:54making their total spend to date £65,000.

0:14:54 > 0:14:57We are struggling with the budget. Um...

0:14:57 > 0:15:00Wajid doesn't really discuss it with me as much,

0:15:00 > 0:15:04but I can tell it's quite stressful.

0:15:04 > 0:15:07The budget is actually going at a fast rate.

0:15:07 > 0:15:10It's very tight at the moment, very tight.

0:15:10 > 0:15:13Wajid will worry about that, you know.

0:15:13 > 0:15:16He'll get a fright when he checks his bank balance!

0:15:18 > 0:15:20This is a very important part of the build.

0:15:20 > 0:15:23A chunk of the budget is going onto the roof.

0:15:23 > 0:15:27It's a very nervous time at the moment. Let's hope it all goes well.

0:15:27 > 0:15:30The crane cost £150 an hour to hire.

0:15:30 > 0:15:33Any delays to the schedule today will have a further impact

0:15:33 > 0:15:36on an already stretched budget.

0:15:36 > 0:15:38NAIM: Them trusses are upside down.

0:15:41 > 0:15:43Because the trusses have come upside down,

0:15:43 > 0:15:46they've had to take them off, plant them there

0:15:46 > 0:15:49and then put the chain back on so they're the right way up.

0:15:49 > 0:15:51That's a bit of a delay in itself.

0:15:53 > 0:15:57We're behind an hour, so it's costing me money.

0:15:58 > 0:16:01And if any of the trusses get damaged,

0:16:01 > 0:16:04the financial impact could be catastrophic.

0:16:04 > 0:16:06All right, Joe, pull the rope.

0:16:06 > 0:16:10With the clock ticking, the trusses are given temporary fixings

0:16:10 > 0:16:13to hold them in place until after the crane has gone.

0:16:13 > 0:16:16NAIM: This is the moment of truth now.

0:16:16 > 0:16:18One false move and it could come tumbling down.

0:16:23 > 0:16:25CRASHING

0:16:26 > 0:16:29NAIM: Oh, no, no, no.

0:16:29 > 0:16:31No, no, no...

0:16:33 > 0:16:35No, no. This is absolutely horrific.

0:16:35 > 0:16:38ANAM: I don't know what's happened, to be honest.

0:16:38 > 0:16:41I just saw it all falling down.

0:16:41 > 0:16:44The temporary fixings haven't proved strong enough.

0:16:44 > 0:16:47The trusses have toppled towards the parents' house.

0:16:49 > 0:16:51The whole building could've come down.

0:16:51 > 0:16:54I don't know how much damage has been done to the house next door.

0:16:58 > 0:17:02Having managed to get the trusses secured, the crane can head off,

0:17:02 > 0:17:04leaving a £900 bill.

0:17:04 > 0:17:06Naim inspects the damage.

0:17:06 > 0:17:08Luckily, the scaffolding was there

0:17:08 > 0:17:12so it's not done any damage to the neighbouring house there.

0:17:12 > 0:17:14So we've got away lightly with that.

0:17:21 > 0:17:23It's May, and there are just three months to go

0:17:23 > 0:17:26until the arrival of Wajid and Anam's baby.

0:17:26 > 0:17:29Richie is on his last few weeks on the job

0:17:29 > 0:17:32and is rushing to get partition walls up.

0:17:32 > 0:17:34With acres of flooring

0:17:34 > 0:17:37and a forest of stud walls appearing before their eyes,

0:17:37 > 0:17:42Wajid and Anam are realising the scale of the task they've taken on.

0:17:42 > 0:17:45I think it's scary how quickly the money is going

0:17:45 > 0:17:48in materials, labour and everything.

0:17:48 > 0:17:53For me it's been very surprising how much the cement can cost

0:17:53 > 0:17:54or how much the bricks can cost.

0:18:03 > 0:18:07They wanted a three-storey home with a high-end finish,

0:18:07 > 0:18:10but I just can't see how they can possibly afford it.

0:18:10 > 0:18:13- Hi, Wajid.- Hi, Kieran. - Good to see you.

0:18:13 > 0:18:17- Unbelievable progress. This is incredible. - Yeah, they've done fantastic job.

0:18:17 > 0:18:20'Inside they've gone with Piers' dramatic re-design

0:18:20 > 0:18:24'for the ground floor, reflecting Wajid's dream of a grand hallway.'

0:18:24 > 0:18:26We're stood under where the stairs are going in.

0:18:26 > 0:18:30Much more of a lobby space and kind of a grand entrance.

0:18:30 > 0:18:33That's great. It really feels like you're taken on board

0:18:33 > 0:18:35the whole thing of what it's really going to be for.

0:18:35 > 0:18:39- Yeah, we tried to fit personal life and my professional life.- Yeah.

0:18:39 > 0:18:42'But upstairs Wajid is slipping back

0:18:42 > 0:18:45'to his indecisive yet ambitious ways.'

0:18:45 > 0:18:48Is the layout of this floor fixed now?

0:18:48 > 0:18:50That's the million-dollar question, Kieran,

0:18:50 > 0:18:54because as the guys are working away there's this one

0:18:54 > 0:18:57issue in my mind about one of the bedrooms,

0:18:57 > 0:18:59whether we're having one super-long bedroom or just fit it?

0:18:59 > 0:19:03So you're still deciding the layout as the layout is being built.

0:19:03 > 0:19:06Is that a bit worrying for you? Who's calling the shots then?

0:19:06 > 0:19:09If you weren't here today who would decide what the layout is going to be?

0:19:09 > 0:19:13If I wasn't here now I'd be in some kind of virtual control centre

0:19:13 > 0:19:15via my mobile phone.

0:19:15 > 0:19:18Can you really keep control, though? Does it end up with a bit of a power vacuum?

0:19:18 > 0:19:21There's still no-one to take these decisions?

0:19:21 > 0:19:23I'm in a state of complexity.

0:19:23 > 0:19:25'The lack of decision making

0:19:25 > 0:19:28'mixed with the sheer scale of the build

0:19:28 > 0:19:30'means Wajid is having to manage expectations.'

0:19:30 > 0:19:32The optimistic deadline of Anam's,

0:19:32 > 0:19:36she thinks this house will be done by the end of August.

0:19:36 > 0:19:38Although I'm a very ambitious person, I've got to be

0:19:38 > 0:19:42a realist and I think it's looking more like towards Christmas.

0:19:46 > 0:19:49I think Wajid is putting a bit of a positive spin on things.

0:19:49 > 0:19:52He's a very positive person, a diplomatic person,

0:19:52 > 0:19:56but I must say it feels a little bit chaotic.

0:19:56 > 0:19:58They're moving at 100mph here

0:19:58 > 0:20:01just because the deadlines are starting to come thick and fast.

0:20:01 > 0:20:04It is also a little bit worrying that so many decisions still

0:20:04 > 0:20:07haven't been made, as the building is more or less finished.

0:20:09 > 0:20:12And that's not the only problem.

0:20:12 > 0:20:15How much have you spent so far, how much of the budget is gone?

0:20:15 > 0:20:18So far we've spent £72,350.

0:20:18 > 0:20:20So almost three quarters of the budget is gone.

0:20:20 > 0:20:24- Tell me what hasn't yet been paid for out of that?- En suites,

0:20:24 > 0:20:26your bathrooms, your underfloor heating,

0:20:26 > 0:20:29- your pipework, your electrics. - Kitchen.- Your kitchen.

0:20:29 > 0:20:31That sounds like quite a long list, Wajid?

0:20:31 > 0:20:32That's... Yes.

0:20:32 > 0:20:36- We kind of didn't anticipate the huge size of the house.- Right.

0:20:37 > 0:20:40So, tell me how much more you've spent up to this stage

0:20:40 > 0:20:42than you expected to spend?

0:20:42 > 0:20:45- I'd say round about between £5,000 and £8,000 more.- Right.

0:20:45 > 0:20:48- That's a fair percentage, isn't it? That's your contingency gone.- Yes.

0:20:48 > 0:20:50That's a big chunk.

0:20:52 > 0:20:54It's difficult looking at the budget

0:20:54 > 0:20:57- and your bank account just literally going down.- Yes.

0:21:00 > 0:21:03Materials and labour have eaten into the budget,

0:21:03 > 0:21:06but they're still a very long way off.

0:21:08 > 0:21:12Somehow their ideas for the finish have remained unchanged.

0:21:13 > 0:21:15To me, I've always wanted to have a luxurious feel

0:21:15 > 0:21:18and one of the building materials that's influenced me

0:21:18 > 0:21:22has been marble. It gives it a luxurious, grand finish.

0:21:22 > 0:21:25I'll have pieces of marble here, there and everywhere.

0:21:27 > 0:21:30The interior's definitely something that

0:21:30 > 0:21:32I'm going to make sure that it's perfect.

0:21:32 > 0:21:34It is going to be modern.

0:21:34 > 0:21:35It's going to be elegant,

0:21:35 > 0:21:39it's going to be different from the house that we're living in.

0:21:39 > 0:21:43This house is nearly three and a half times larger than the average new build.

0:21:43 > 0:21:47The high-end finishes they want are out of the question if they want

0:21:47 > 0:21:50to finish this home anywhere close to their £100k budget.

0:21:52 > 0:21:54We need to try and show them an alternative vision

0:21:54 > 0:21:58for their home which they can achieve the less.

0:21:58 > 0:22:01For Wajid and Anam, the per square metre cost of laying marble

0:22:01 > 0:22:05or tiles and surface materials can really start to add up.

0:22:05 > 0:22:09I think it's really striking when you see houses designed

0:22:09 > 0:22:12for architects themselves, they often leave out all of that stuff.

0:22:12 > 0:22:14You actually see the materials the house is made of.

0:22:14 > 0:22:18That can be a great quality and, of course, you save a lot of money and hassle.

0:22:21 > 0:22:23I think for Wajid and Anam it's going to be quite a big step

0:22:23 > 0:22:25to embrace this stuff, and I'm hoping

0:22:25 > 0:22:28by seeing this house, they'll take a step down the road.

0:22:31 > 0:22:35We've got exclusive access to a house in Stamford Brook, West London.

0:22:35 > 0:22:39It's a two-bedroom home designed by Powell Tuck Associates.

0:22:39 > 0:22:43It champions the elegant use of relatively inexpensive materials.

0:22:45 > 0:22:48- It is so light up here, it's so beautiful.- Yes, definitely.

0:22:48 > 0:22:51Yeah, it's pretty nice. I like its simplicity.

0:22:52 > 0:22:56I want Wajid and Anam to see that they don't need to go over the top

0:22:56 > 0:22:59with fancy finishes to create a feeling of luxury.

0:22:59 > 0:23:02Here it's all about subtlety.

0:23:02 > 0:23:04Does this in any way make you think, well, there's a way of having

0:23:04 > 0:23:07an interior that you don't have to spend a fortune on.

0:23:07 > 0:23:08You can still have some quality.

0:23:08 > 0:23:11Yeah, I think it's the simple things in life

0:23:11 > 0:23:14that make a big difference and you can see that cliche here.

0:23:14 > 0:23:18When you walk in you have this wow factor and it's really nice.

0:23:18 > 0:23:19I like it, yes.

0:23:21 > 0:23:25The simple, honest materials on show have a beauty of their own.

0:23:26 > 0:23:29Continuing an exposed brick wall from outside to in

0:23:29 > 0:23:32saves around £50 per square metre,

0:23:32 > 0:23:34avoiding the need for plaster and paint.

0:23:34 > 0:23:38I like the idea of carrying the wall inside the house as well.

0:23:40 > 0:23:42The floor finish is just

0:23:42 > 0:23:44a sand and cement screed that has been polished.

0:23:44 > 0:23:48When light washes across it there is a subtle sheen.

0:23:49 > 0:23:51- It is quite a nice spot, isn't it? - Yes, it's quite nice.

0:23:51 > 0:23:55I think it's the fact that having that comfy rug there works well

0:23:55 > 0:23:58with the sort of the raw flooring as well.

0:23:58 > 0:24:01Yes, some very rich material next to quite a rough one.

0:24:01 > 0:24:04- Yes.- This has got a bit of a shine to it, hasn't it?

0:24:04 > 0:24:08As you look across the room you get a little bit of a sense of reflection from it.

0:24:13 > 0:24:18Even the ceiling, the beams are exposed but it's just so nicely, neatly done.

0:24:18 > 0:24:23And also the way it's finished is quite kind of inspiring.

0:24:24 > 0:24:27- It's perfect for a family home, yeah, I like it.- Good.

0:24:27 > 0:24:32Unpainted render, ordinarily used on the outside of a building adds a natural texture.

0:24:32 > 0:24:36It can be done for a fraction of the cost of covering a bathroom this size in expensive tiles.

0:24:36 > 0:24:39That is probably the most eye-catching for me.

0:24:39 > 0:24:42I like this material, I think it really adds value to the interior.

0:24:42 > 0:24:46This is the kind of finish that does look neat but still has a quality.

0:24:46 > 0:24:48I totally agree with you.

0:24:49 > 0:24:53If Wajid and Anam are brave enough to take on some of these ideas,

0:24:53 > 0:24:56they could claw back some money from their overspend.

0:24:58 > 0:25:01Do you think some of these ideas now you'll be able to embrace

0:25:01 > 0:25:02and take forward to the house?

0:25:02 > 0:25:05Actually it's a really difficult situation

0:25:05 > 0:25:08because these ideas are brilliant. I like them, but the problem I've got,

0:25:08 > 0:25:11I'm the youngest sibling in the family. I will think

0:25:11 > 0:25:14how will that be accepted with the rest of the family?

0:25:14 > 0:25:17Naim is the main person that I've got to get on board.

0:25:17 > 0:25:20Does that mean some of the ideas you might like, but you think,

0:25:20 > 0:25:22"Oh, my brother's never going to accept that."

0:25:22 > 0:25:26- Is that what it comes down to? - There is a strong hint of that,

0:25:26 > 0:25:29because not only is he the project manager, he's my elder brother.

0:25:32 > 0:25:34The danger for their project is that it could become

0:25:34 > 0:25:36a house of poor compromises.

0:25:38 > 0:25:41The biggest surprise of all was finding out from Wajid

0:25:41 > 0:25:44that actually this build is not really up to them only,

0:25:44 > 0:25:46he's got to run every decision by his family,

0:25:46 > 0:25:50sometimes by his parents, and, in a way, most importantly by Naim.

0:25:50 > 0:25:54He might be a counsellor and he might be a real independent guy,

0:25:54 > 0:25:56but he's still the little brother in his family.

0:25:58 > 0:26:01And the big effort is going to be convincing the family

0:26:01 > 0:26:03that it's OK for them to have their own way.

0:26:09 > 0:26:13It's been three months since work started on Wajid and Anam's dream family home.

0:26:13 > 0:26:18The roof is now on and they can no longer afford a full-time builder on-site.

0:26:18 > 0:26:21Richie has left.

0:26:21 > 0:26:22I think we will miss him.

0:26:22 > 0:26:25With all the stuff that he's done, he's helped us a lot.

0:26:26 > 0:26:29It's going to be different now because obviously Richie's gone

0:26:29 > 0:26:32and it's going to very much fall in the hands of myself and Naim.

0:26:32 > 0:26:34Which is a scary feeling!

0:26:36 > 0:26:39Without a builder they could easily lose momentum

0:26:39 > 0:26:42and rush decisions they end up regretting.

0:26:44 > 0:26:48Piers needs to help them come up with a strategy of low-cost solutions

0:26:48 > 0:26:51that will finish their home with whatever they have left.

0:26:52 > 0:26:55I heard that you're spending the budget like water?

0:26:55 > 0:26:57- Yes, you heard right. - You're halfway through a project

0:26:57 > 0:27:00and you've spent three quarters of the budget.

0:27:00 > 0:27:02We thought we were kind of three quarters of the way through

0:27:02 > 0:27:06the project but you've reminded us we're halfway through the project instead.

0:27:07 > 0:27:11Piers believes their one chance to complete their home within

0:27:11 > 0:27:14budget now is by making the most of materials they already have.

0:27:18 > 0:27:20Levelling and polishing their existing concrete floor

0:27:20 > 0:27:23will give a glossy, marble-like sheen,

0:27:23 > 0:27:27for just the cost of hiring the equipment, around £370.

0:27:29 > 0:27:32Marble is an excruciating £55 per square metre.

0:27:32 > 0:27:35Piers' idea would be just a quarter of that cost.

0:27:38 > 0:27:40The great thing about techniques like this is that you're not

0:27:40 > 0:27:43buying another finish to put on top of what you've already got,

0:27:43 > 0:27:47you're actually using what you've already got and just exposing the beauty of it.

0:27:50 > 0:27:53And this is just the first rough pass for the sander,

0:27:53 > 0:27:55this isn't polished yet.

0:27:55 > 0:27:58But if you do it properly, that's what you end up with.

0:27:58 > 0:28:01Mirror smooth.

0:28:01 > 0:28:03A polished concrete floor should retain its shine

0:28:03 > 0:28:05for at least 15 years,

0:28:05 > 0:28:07and can be re-polished when needed.

0:28:07 > 0:28:09- That's smooth. - That is like marble.

0:28:09 > 0:28:11It is, isn't it?

0:28:11 > 0:28:15It is a durable, low-maintenance and cost-effective solution

0:28:15 > 0:28:17to their desire for luxury.

0:28:17 > 0:28:20But creating the feeling of an imposing entrance hall

0:28:20 > 0:28:22is about much more than material finishes.

0:28:24 > 0:28:27The design and scale of the staircase itself

0:28:27 > 0:28:29could set the tone for the whole ground floor.

0:28:34 > 0:28:36- OK, so I've made a little model for you.- Right...

0:28:36 > 0:28:38So, the principle of this

0:28:38 > 0:28:41is that there is one very generous bottom step,

0:28:41 > 0:28:43so is the second and third and fourth.

0:28:43 > 0:28:46This could be the most beautiful cast and polished concrete.

0:28:46 > 0:28:48Cos concrete is such a versatile material,

0:28:48 > 0:28:51this could actually be a beautiful curve on it, if you wanted.

0:28:51 > 0:28:53- Like a wraparound one. - Absolutely.

0:28:53 > 0:28:55I quite get it, and I like the idea,

0:28:55 > 0:28:57because the staircase is a part of the flooring.

0:28:57 > 0:28:58Absolutely.

0:28:58 > 0:29:00Your hand rail starts here

0:29:00 > 0:29:03and it's the most beautiful piece of metal

0:29:03 > 0:29:04that just turns the corner there.

0:29:08 > 0:29:09The original plan was for

0:29:09 > 0:29:13a straightforward, functional staircase, hidden from view.

0:29:13 > 0:29:16Piers' idea brings it firmly centre stage,

0:29:16 > 0:29:18in a sense of grandeur to the room.

0:29:18 > 0:29:22The initial four generous steps of polished concrete

0:29:22 > 0:29:25would blend in to the flooring.

0:29:25 > 0:29:28Then the material could become something more standard,

0:29:28 > 0:29:33like timber, marking a change from public domain to private space.

0:29:39 > 0:29:43Wajid, um... You're having a bit of a moment.

0:29:43 > 0:29:45I'm just trying to picture it. Er...

0:29:46 > 0:29:47Not sure.

0:29:49 > 0:29:52Piers' radical rethink is a lot to take on board.

0:29:54 > 0:29:57Normally, you see some staircases tucked away,

0:29:57 > 0:29:58you can't really see them.

0:29:58 > 0:30:02But here, you'll see the staircase, so you have to get this right.

0:30:02 > 0:30:04This is the first sight someone's going to see

0:30:04 > 0:30:06when you open your front door.

0:30:06 > 0:30:07Piers is bringing innovation today,

0:30:07 > 0:30:10but you have to understand it, you've got to believe in it,

0:30:10 > 0:30:12and at the moment, if I'm being honest with you,

0:30:12 > 0:30:14I probably do need a bit more convincing.

0:30:14 > 0:30:16SHE LAUGHS

0:30:16 > 0:30:20I can't stress about how important that arrival into this building is,

0:30:20 > 0:30:22and I think it would be a disaster if they compromise

0:30:22 > 0:30:24and just put in an ordinary staircase

0:30:24 > 0:30:25and an ordinary floor finish.

0:30:25 > 0:30:28It really has to have something...really special,

0:30:28 > 0:30:30and that will transform the building.

0:30:30 > 0:30:32MACHINES WHIR

0:30:35 > 0:30:396.04, Naim. 6.04 metres.

0:30:41 > 0:30:44With just eight weeks till Wajid and Anam's baby is due,

0:30:44 > 0:30:46and Anam's optimistic moving-in date,

0:30:46 > 0:30:50the house is still very much a work in progress.

0:30:50 > 0:30:511.8.

0:30:51 > 0:30:55It's more important than ever that Wajid and Naim pull together.

0:30:55 > 0:30:56Lift it up.

0:31:00 > 0:31:02The bills are racking up, too.

0:31:02 > 0:31:04They are now having to pay for skilled tradesmen

0:31:04 > 0:31:06to carry out key jobs.

0:31:06 > 0:31:10Just plasterboarding the whole house is costing £4,000.

0:31:11 > 0:31:14Electrics are being installed,

0:31:14 > 0:31:16the render is going on,

0:31:16 > 0:31:18and windows are being fitted.

0:31:18 > 0:31:22Their total spend so far is now £85,000,

0:31:22 > 0:31:27but, finally, Anam does have the key to her very own front door.

0:31:27 > 0:31:30It just looks amazing when you come into the street

0:31:30 > 0:31:33and the windows are in, everything.

0:31:33 > 0:31:36You've actually got the keys to open the door.

0:31:36 > 0:31:39So, yeah, it does give you that homely feeling.

0:31:41 > 0:31:44Naim's priority is understandably just to get the house done

0:31:44 > 0:31:47in the most straightforward way possible.

0:31:47 > 0:31:51I do like the concrete, the polished concrete.

0:31:51 > 0:31:53But to have it all the way through

0:31:53 > 0:31:55is a bit too much, to be honest with you.

0:31:55 > 0:31:58All of this part, put a thick shagpile in it, carpet.

0:31:58 > 0:32:00I think that's going to be a better idea.

0:32:00 > 0:32:03I'm going to talk to them and try to persuade them.

0:32:03 > 0:32:07Naim is a very organised, structured, get-it-done kind of guy.

0:32:07 > 0:32:12So, unfortunately, that leaves little element of creativity.

0:32:12 > 0:32:15So, it's business as usual for Naim.

0:32:17 > 0:32:20It's make or break time for this build.

0:32:20 > 0:32:24Wajid and Anam are losing the battle to make this home exceptional.

0:32:30 > 0:32:33I've been searching for an interior that will prove to them

0:32:33 > 0:32:35that design can have a positive effect

0:32:35 > 0:32:37on the way they feel in an interior.

0:32:38 > 0:32:41I've got one more chance to show them ideas

0:32:41 > 0:32:43that they might fight to have in their own home.

0:32:45 > 0:32:46I think now is the time

0:32:46 > 0:32:49to try to reconnect this project with their own aspirations.

0:32:49 > 0:32:50Hi, guys.

0:32:50 > 0:32:52'They told me they want something luxurious.

0:32:52 > 0:32:54'I want to bring them to a place'

0:32:54 > 0:32:56that, for me, sets standards in terms of aspiration

0:32:56 > 0:32:59and perhaps can give them a little bit of inspiration

0:32:59 > 0:33:01as to how they can create a beautiful interior.

0:33:07 > 0:33:10Sketch houses a collection of restaurants and bars

0:33:10 > 0:33:11in Mayfair, London.

0:33:22 > 0:33:24This is certainly grand, isn't it? This entranceway.

0:33:24 > 0:33:27What do you think of this, this rich, gold ceiling?

0:33:27 > 0:33:29That's kind of a spectacular touch.

0:33:29 > 0:33:31It's different, isn't it?

0:33:31 > 0:33:34- It's not like an ordinary, white ceiling.- Yeah.

0:33:34 > 0:33:35A bit glitzy.

0:33:40 > 0:33:43It's a world-class showcase of interiors.

0:33:43 > 0:33:45Each room has been individually created

0:33:45 > 0:33:48by some of the greatest contemporary artists and designers.

0:33:49 > 0:33:53- Wow. Different, innit? - That's very different, yes.

0:33:53 > 0:33:57What do you think? Could you imagine having a forest in your dining room?

0:33:57 > 0:33:59I've not seen anything like this before.

0:33:59 > 0:34:02- Is really theatrical, isn't it? - It's just amazing.

0:34:07 > 0:34:10- It makes you feel a bit, like, happy. - Yeah.

0:34:10 > 0:34:12- Anam in Wonderland, isn't it? - It is like that.

0:34:14 > 0:34:17I'm not saying that you need to do your dining room up like this,

0:34:17 > 0:34:19but it does give you an idea, doesn't it,

0:34:19 > 0:34:22of just beyond the plain, ordinary materials?

0:34:25 > 0:34:26Oh, wow.

0:34:26 > 0:34:28I love this.

0:34:29 > 0:34:31It's just the perfect room.

0:34:31 > 0:34:33- It's a beautiful place, isn't it? - Yes.

0:34:35 > 0:34:36The Gallery restaurant,

0:34:36 > 0:34:40by award-winning architect and designer India Mahdavi,

0:34:40 > 0:34:42is an amazing example of a focused concept.

0:34:46 > 0:34:48I love how it's just two things, really.

0:34:48 > 0:34:50- It's just pink and then this copper colour.- Yeah.

0:34:50 > 0:34:53- Really beautiful, isn't it? - It's just perfect.

0:34:53 > 0:34:57The room clearly appeals to Anam,

0:34:57 > 0:35:00but the real success here comes from its scale.

0:35:00 > 0:35:03We're going to have a feature wall in every room.

0:35:03 > 0:35:05That idea of creating one wall of colour -

0:35:05 > 0:35:07when you see this place, don't you think they are these rooms

0:35:07 > 0:35:09that are conceived as a whole?

0:35:09 > 0:35:10Yeah.

0:35:10 > 0:35:15Have we got the confidence to go and do a full room in a similar vein?

0:35:15 > 0:35:17- I haven't got the confidence. - I think Anam has.

0:35:17 > 0:35:19Yes, it's just about being brave

0:35:19 > 0:35:22and just being able to, sort of, go for it.

0:35:27 > 0:35:29The restaurant upstairs draws on

0:35:29 > 0:35:32the owner Mourad Mazouz's North African heritage,

0:35:32 > 0:35:34with opulence at its heart.

0:35:36 > 0:35:37What do you make of this?

0:35:37 > 0:35:39Amazing. This room is doing it for me.

0:35:41 > 0:35:43- So tranquil here. - Yeah.

0:35:44 > 0:35:48This partition, though, does look useful for you, doesn't it?

0:35:48 > 0:35:51- Because it's...that sense of connecting two spaces.- Yeah.

0:35:51 > 0:35:53I think it's a fantastic idea

0:35:53 > 0:35:57and it really gives you this huge, grand kind of entrance into it.

0:35:57 > 0:36:00Cos you decided to go for that double door, didn't you?

0:36:00 > 0:36:02Between the entrance hall and the lounge.

0:36:02 > 0:36:04This is just a beautiful treatment of a threshold.

0:36:04 > 0:36:07Doing something like that, with textiles, with leather,

0:36:07 > 0:36:08it's definitely luxurious, isn't it?

0:36:15 > 0:36:17To me, this is probably my favourite part -

0:36:17 > 0:36:21I'm feeling the cosiness, I'm feeling a kind of tranquillity.

0:36:21 > 0:36:26For me, it's phenomenal to just absorb and appreciate and...

0:36:26 > 0:36:28- I've taken a lot on board. - Yeah.

0:36:28 > 0:36:30'But however much they like it,

0:36:30 > 0:36:32'there is still a hurdle to get over.'

0:36:32 > 0:36:37It's our job to go and show the creativity that we've seen here

0:36:37 > 0:36:40and transpire that into Naim's mind, which is a difficult task.

0:36:44 > 0:36:46I think the most important bit of progress today

0:36:46 > 0:36:49was that they were no longer talking about which material

0:36:49 > 0:36:51they should buy or shouldn't buy -

0:36:51 > 0:36:53they were talking about how they felt in this interior

0:36:53 > 0:36:56and the fact that design has communicated that to them

0:36:56 > 0:36:58makes me really, really thrilled.

0:36:59 > 0:37:01But will they be able to hang on

0:37:01 > 0:37:03to that confidence and enthusiasm for their home

0:37:03 > 0:37:05once they've got back to Burnley?

0:37:11 > 0:37:14Just a few weeks later, for the first time,

0:37:14 > 0:37:16Wajid and Anam have a good reason

0:37:16 > 0:37:19to briefly take their focus away from the build.

0:37:19 > 0:37:20We're delighted to announce

0:37:20 > 0:37:22the arrival of our baby daughter,

0:37:22 > 0:37:23Amira Khan.

0:37:26 > 0:37:33- Lots of presents. I think she doesn't know how lucky she is.- Yeah, yeah.

0:37:33 > 0:37:35BABY CRIES

0:37:38 > 0:37:42But with the 11 members of the family now under one roof,

0:37:42 > 0:37:43it's more important than ever

0:37:43 > 0:37:47that Wajid and Anam's own home gets finished.

0:37:47 > 0:37:51We need more space now. Everything is just sort of crammed in this room.

0:37:52 > 0:37:55It's just that I can't wait to get her nursery ready.

0:37:55 > 0:37:57I am proud to be a dad.

0:37:57 > 0:37:59When you see that face,

0:37:59 > 0:38:01all the world's worries just disappear.

0:38:01 > 0:38:02You just forget about everything.

0:38:05 > 0:38:07But everything includes the house.

0:38:07 > 0:38:11Wajid and Anam's build has ground to a halt.

0:38:14 > 0:38:18Three months pass with hardly any progress.

0:38:20 > 0:38:22There has been a real stagnant period.

0:38:22 > 0:38:27I think it's affected morale a bit and I've just been a bit like,

0:38:27 > 0:38:29"Will this ever happen?"

0:38:35 > 0:38:39Naim has also been sick, so has rarely made it to site.

0:38:39 > 0:38:41I've been quite ill, to be honest with you,

0:38:41 > 0:38:43with cluster headaches.

0:38:43 > 0:38:45Been about six to eight weeks but now, hopefully,

0:38:45 > 0:38:49after some treatment and hospital appointments,

0:38:49 > 0:38:51I feel a lot better.

0:38:52 > 0:38:54Determined not to give up,

0:38:54 > 0:38:57Naim manages to get the staircase in.

0:38:57 > 0:39:00It's progress, but he fits a standard one,

0:39:00 > 0:39:03not in keeping with the vision of a grand hallway.

0:39:07 > 0:39:10It's now over eight months since they began

0:39:10 > 0:39:13and there's less than 13 grand left to finish it.

0:39:13 > 0:39:17It's Piers' last chance to influence the rest of the build

0:39:17 > 0:39:20and he is determined not to let Wajid and Anam give up

0:39:20 > 0:39:23on having an incredible interior.

0:39:23 > 0:39:27There is nothing worse than a building project that stagnates.

0:39:28 > 0:39:31But for me, the big surprise -

0:39:31 > 0:39:33or big disappointment, really, I guess -

0:39:33 > 0:39:35is the creeping normalisation of everything.

0:39:35 > 0:39:38There's nothing distinct, nothing individual,

0:39:38 > 0:39:39nothing personal about this building yet.

0:39:39 > 0:39:43Piers must find out if Wajid is still committed

0:39:43 > 0:39:45to making this home special.

0:39:45 > 0:39:48You're right, there needs to be much more thought put into this and...

0:39:48 > 0:39:50That's not the idea - to finish it, to just get things done.

0:39:50 > 0:39:53- I think we need to do some things that are different.- Yes.

0:39:53 > 0:39:58We really want to get our personal touch to this whole project.

0:40:00 > 0:40:02This space needs to be...

0:40:03 > 0:40:05..a really grand space.

0:40:05 > 0:40:07It needs to be spacious, it needs to be beautiful

0:40:07 > 0:40:12and what I worry about the stair is that it slightly domesticates it,

0:40:12 > 0:40:15it makes it seem like just a house.

0:40:15 > 0:40:19What you need to do to this is not just choose an interesting handrail

0:40:19 > 0:40:21and hope that is going to do something.

0:40:21 > 0:40:23You know, it needs to be more than that.

0:40:23 > 0:40:25You're right. There's going to be much more...

0:40:25 > 0:40:30Piers needs to reboot their passion for that key entrance hall.

0:40:30 > 0:40:32What I think we need to do is have a vision for this room.

0:40:32 > 0:40:35Right now, you need to get the bull by the horns

0:40:35 > 0:40:37and really make this an amazing building.

0:40:37 > 0:40:40To salvage that conventional staircase,

0:40:40 > 0:40:41it needs a big idea.

0:40:41 > 0:40:47So, if you make an amazing metal screen,

0:40:47 > 0:40:49that is full height, to create drama,

0:40:49 > 0:40:51I mean, it could...

0:40:51 > 0:40:56You could have that actually etched out of screen three metres tall.

0:40:56 > 0:40:58- It's like a prayer. - That would be fantastic.

0:40:58 > 0:41:00I really like the idea that screen.

0:41:00 > 0:41:04And he has an idea for much-needed opulence,

0:41:04 > 0:41:07inspired by the leather panels Wajid saw in London.

0:41:07 > 0:41:09This wall here,

0:41:09 > 0:41:13if you got a whole series of leather offcuts,

0:41:13 > 0:41:18what you could end up with is a wall built up out of series of panels,

0:41:18 > 0:41:19which I think would be incredible.

0:41:19 > 0:41:21I love the idea of leather. I can see that already.

0:41:21 > 0:41:24This isn't expensive stuff, but it looks expensive.

0:41:24 > 0:41:28That's probably the most exciting thing I'm looking forward to now.

0:41:28 > 0:41:31With Wajid reenergised, Piers needs to act fast,

0:41:31 > 0:41:35so he takes him to a workshop 20 miles away in Bury

0:41:35 > 0:41:38that sells hides in every hue.

0:41:38 > 0:41:40This bluey grey is kind of nice.

0:41:42 > 0:41:46- How about doing it in pink leather? - No. Never.

0:41:48 > 0:41:50- Amazing size. - Yeah.

0:41:50 > 0:41:52I never imagined it to be this big.

0:41:52 > 0:41:56If it was an end of line one, this size, what would it cost?

0:41:56 > 0:42:00- We're talking £60-65 for an end of line one.- That's pretty good.

0:42:00 > 0:42:02Piers wants to show Wajid

0:42:02 > 0:42:04how easily the leather can be transformed

0:42:04 > 0:42:07into a luxurious wall covering.

0:42:07 > 0:42:09He mocks up a panel using a timber offcut

0:42:09 > 0:42:11and some upholstery stuffing.

0:42:15 > 0:42:19- It works. There we are. - One panel.- Brilliant.

0:42:19 > 0:42:21- Yeah, I can see that on a wall. - It's nice, though, isn't it?

0:42:21 > 0:42:23It's really sumptuous.

0:42:23 > 0:42:26I'd definitely go for this rather than boring plasterboard.

0:42:26 > 0:42:28- Great stuff. - Good.

0:42:31 > 0:42:33Wajid and Anam have set out from the beginning

0:42:33 > 0:42:35that they want this to be a luxurious build.

0:42:35 > 0:42:39But I think the important thing is not to make everywhere luxurious,

0:42:39 > 0:42:41but know where to spend the time and the money,

0:42:41 > 0:42:43and in the hall, the point of arrival,

0:42:43 > 0:42:45that leather wall which they've taken on board

0:42:45 > 0:42:46is going to be amazing.

0:42:46 > 0:42:48But they need to do something more,

0:42:48 > 0:42:49and that is the lighting.

0:42:52 > 0:42:55With that in mind, Piers takes them to The French,

0:42:55 > 0:42:58a chic restaurant in nearby Manchester.

0:42:59 > 0:43:00What do you think of this room?

0:43:00 > 0:43:05It's just amazing. I love the chandeliers.

0:43:05 > 0:43:06- They're great, aren't they? - Yeah, very nice.

0:43:06 > 0:43:08I think the word is "grand".

0:43:10 > 0:43:14Their lighting budget for the whole house is just £1,200 -

0:43:14 > 0:43:17far less than just one of these chandeliers.

0:43:17 > 0:43:19But it's the sense of scale

0:43:19 > 0:43:21that Piers wants them to keep hold of.

0:43:21 > 0:43:24The trick really is you don't necessarily

0:43:24 > 0:43:27need to throw money at things to make them amazing.

0:43:27 > 0:43:30- You could do something equally dramatic, I think.- Yeah.

0:43:32 > 0:43:36But to come up with a lighting centrepiece on their budget,

0:43:36 > 0:43:39they need to head somewhere slightly less glamorous.

0:43:39 > 0:43:43So, this is a little bit different than the smart hotel in Manchester.

0:43:43 > 0:43:44THEY LAUGH

0:43:44 > 0:43:46But equally interesting, I think.

0:43:47 > 0:43:50This cable suppliers could be the answer to the quest

0:43:50 > 0:43:52for glamour on a shoestring.

0:43:52 > 0:43:55Braided cable is really fashionable at the moment,

0:43:55 > 0:43:57and this is expandable braided sleeve -

0:43:57 > 0:44:00a much more economical way of doing it.

0:44:00 > 0:44:02You thread over standard wiring -

0:44:02 > 0:44:05what you see is a beautiful, colourful cable,

0:44:05 > 0:44:08using beautiful brass bayonet fittings

0:44:08 > 0:44:13and then, an amazing bulb.

0:44:13 > 0:44:16Use about 10 of them hung from different heights in a group

0:44:16 > 0:44:20with, you know, all this glinting brass.

0:44:20 > 0:44:22I think it will look amazing, really.

0:44:22 > 0:44:26But is Piers' deconstructed chandelier a step too far?

0:44:26 > 0:44:28You really are scratching your head and looking nonplussed!

0:44:28 > 0:44:31I'm just not getting it, to be absolutely honest with you.

0:44:31 > 0:44:32I just can't picture it.

0:44:32 > 0:44:34Ten of these, 200 quid,

0:44:34 > 0:44:38and then this braided cable sleeve at 50p a metre.

0:44:38 > 0:44:42I mean, I think this will look better than an expensive chandelier

0:44:42 > 0:44:45and more individual, quirky, and more dramatic, in fact.

0:44:45 > 0:44:46Yeah, I know what you mean.

0:44:46 > 0:44:50It's something different, we've not seen that before.

0:44:50 > 0:44:52I think she likes it!

0:44:52 > 0:44:55I can't picture it, how it may look like.

0:44:55 > 0:44:57I'm just a bit confused.

0:44:59 > 0:45:00As always, he's confused!

0:45:00 > 0:45:01SHE LAUGHS

0:45:01 > 0:45:04I think Wajid is completely flummoxed, if I'm honest,

0:45:04 > 0:45:07and I don't know if he's going to do this.

0:45:07 > 0:45:12'Real luxury isn't about squandering vast amounts of money -

0:45:12 > 0:45:17'it's about the subtlety of light, material, detail and texture

0:45:17 > 0:45:18'and then, invention.'

0:45:24 > 0:45:27Back on site, after nearly six months of stagnation,

0:45:27 > 0:45:29it's suddenly a hive of activity.

0:45:31 > 0:45:34They're racing to get key living areas done

0:45:34 > 0:45:36so they can move in.

0:45:36 > 0:45:38Stretching their finances even further,

0:45:38 > 0:45:40they've settled on six bedrooms

0:45:40 > 0:45:43and a couple are beginning to look habitable.

0:45:43 > 0:45:46I love the ceiling. I wasn't expecting them to do it.

0:45:46 > 0:45:49It was more of a, like, a little surprise.

0:45:49 > 0:45:50I'm really excited now because

0:45:50 > 0:45:52I'm glad it's finally coming together.

0:45:52 > 0:45:57And bathrooms and the kitchen are starting to take shape.

0:45:57 > 0:46:00They're also making a start on creating the padded leather wall

0:46:00 > 0:46:02in the entrance hall.

0:46:02 > 0:46:05All wall and ceiling linings must have adequate fire protection

0:46:05 > 0:46:07and treatment to comply with building regulations.

0:46:09 > 0:46:10But Naim's is not so sure

0:46:10 > 0:46:13about his brother's interior design choices.

0:46:13 > 0:46:16I've had strong opposition from my project manager.

0:46:16 > 0:46:19Leather going on the wall, it doesn't look right, you know.

0:46:19 > 0:46:22The smell is... I'm not so keen on that, to be honest with you.

0:46:22 > 0:46:24If it was something I was doing,

0:46:24 > 0:46:27I'd just plaster it and paint it, to be honest with you.

0:46:27 > 0:46:28Looking good.

0:46:28 > 0:46:32But for once, Wajid isn't taking everyone else's ideas into account.

0:46:32 > 0:46:36Yes, we had a difference of opinion in relation to the leather wall,

0:46:36 > 0:46:38but I had to take the final decision.

0:46:38 > 0:46:40In the end, it's my house.

0:46:42 > 0:46:44- What you think? - I think they'll be different.

0:46:44 > 0:46:47- It'll definitely be different. - Unique.

0:46:47 > 0:46:48It could possibly set my migraines off,

0:46:48 > 0:46:50that's what concerns me.

0:46:50 > 0:46:52I think you'll be fine. Praying for your health, mate.

0:46:52 > 0:46:55As well as the leather wall,

0:46:55 > 0:46:57they're also going with Piers' suggestion

0:46:57 > 0:47:01of a decorative panel to transform the ordinary staircase.

0:47:01 > 0:47:04Anam's designing an aluminium screen

0:47:04 > 0:47:07which will incorporate text that means a lot to the family.

0:47:07 > 0:47:09This is the script that we're going for.

0:47:09 > 0:47:10We say it like...

0:47:10 > 0:47:12SHE SAYS PHRASE IN ARABIC

0:47:12 > 0:47:16"All thanks and all praise be to Allah."

0:47:16 > 0:47:20I'm just going to get that sent over to the designers

0:47:20 > 0:47:23and then get them to get that engraved on it.

0:47:25 > 0:47:29Their 100K budget has been pushed to the limit and beyond.

0:47:29 > 0:47:33There's nothing left and there's still plenty to do.

0:47:33 > 0:47:37It's been an absolutely monumental effort to get to this stage

0:47:37 > 0:47:39and the guys have been working flat out,

0:47:39 > 0:47:42especially Naim, he's been really, kind of, determined

0:47:42 > 0:47:43to get things done.

0:47:45 > 0:47:47It is tiring and demotivating,

0:47:47 > 0:47:49coming in and starting in the morning,

0:47:49 > 0:47:50finishing late in the evening.

0:47:50 > 0:47:53But what keeps us going is the love we have between the family

0:47:53 > 0:47:54and us brothers.

0:47:54 > 0:47:58The need to find low-cost solutions to finish this house

0:47:58 > 0:48:00is more important than ever,

0:48:00 > 0:48:04but so is Anam's desire to make her mark on the interior.

0:48:04 > 0:48:07She's found an economical way to add some bling.

0:48:07 > 0:48:11We've got this gold metallic paint.

0:48:11 > 0:48:13It'll just give it, like, that grand look.

0:48:13 > 0:48:16But were not going to completely go crazy with colours.

0:48:16 > 0:48:18It's really pressurising for me

0:48:18 > 0:48:20because I'm like, I don't want to get this wrong.

0:48:22 > 0:48:24As they near the end of over a year's work

0:48:24 > 0:48:26on their low-cost build,

0:48:26 > 0:48:30can it possibly become the high-end, luxury home they wanted?

0:48:46 > 0:48:50Wajid and Anam set out to build a three-storey, six-bedroom house

0:48:50 > 0:48:52for less than £100,000.

0:48:52 > 0:48:54Not only that, but it had to accommodate

0:48:54 > 0:48:56a very complex set of requirements.

0:48:56 > 0:48:58It had to be a home for a new baby,

0:48:58 > 0:49:00to accommodate their large extended family

0:49:00 > 0:49:03and also Wajid's work as a local politician.

0:49:03 > 0:49:05They were also struggling to understand

0:49:05 > 0:49:09how non-standard materials could create a luxurious interior.

0:49:10 > 0:49:1313 months since the first brick was laid,

0:49:13 > 0:49:17we're back in Burnley to see whether they got their dream home.

0:49:27 > 0:49:30- Hi there.- Oh, hi, how are you doing? - Good to see you.- Hiya.

0:49:30 > 0:49:33Hi, Anam, great to see you and great to see the house.

0:49:33 > 0:49:35It looks super at home here.

0:49:38 > 0:49:40It's been a long process. How's it been for you?

0:49:40 > 0:49:42Oh, it was a piece of cake(!)

0:49:42 > 0:49:43- THEY LAUGH - No, seriously,

0:49:43 > 0:49:46it has been a very challenging time, stressful.

0:49:46 > 0:49:48There's been lots of disagreements, absolutely exhausted.

0:49:48 > 0:49:49Blood, sweat and tears.

0:49:49 > 0:49:52Yeah - I think tears, mainly mine.

0:49:52 > 0:49:53THEY LAUGH

0:49:55 > 0:49:58But will the tears have all been worth it?

0:50:03 > 0:50:05Wow, look at this. Amazing!

0:50:08 > 0:50:10This is fantastic. What a great space.

0:50:18 > 0:50:19Wajid, this does feel to me

0:50:19 > 0:50:22a bit like the entrance hall of a public figure.

0:50:22 > 0:50:25Absolutely, it's just the way I wanted it to be.

0:50:25 > 0:50:28As you enter, you enter a really, kind of, open space. You feel good.

0:50:28 > 0:50:29Cos originally...

0:50:29 > 0:50:31This was a very narrow corridor,

0:50:31 > 0:50:35with a single door into this room and a single door into this room.

0:50:35 > 0:50:38It was a wise man that told us some ideas...

0:50:38 > 0:50:40- THEY LAUGH - ..so we followed them ideas through.

0:50:45 > 0:50:48Their open plan living area will give them the big sociable space

0:50:48 > 0:50:51they need for the extended family

0:50:51 > 0:50:54and to host the community when they finally move in.

0:50:54 > 0:50:57They managed to fit a kitchen for £6,500

0:50:57 > 0:50:59and have given it a little extra opulence

0:50:59 > 0:51:02with a lighting feature they picked up for £300.

0:51:09 > 0:51:11I think this is really such a good effect.

0:51:11 > 0:51:14It feels luxurious, it feels rich, it feels generous

0:51:14 > 0:51:15and totally unconventional.

0:51:15 > 0:51:18I remember when we went to Sketch together.

0:51:18 > 0:51:20This feels like a bit of that kind of luxury

0:51:20 > 0:51:21brought to Burnley, in a way.

0:51:23 > 0:51:25It's pretty amazing, the kind of effect you get

0:51:25 > 0:51:27with just some very basic materials.

0:51:27 > 0:51:28Cos it looks really expensive.

0:51:28 > 0:51:30I mean, how much did this actually cost?

0:51:30 > 0:51:32Overall, it cost just short of £1,000.

0:51:32 > 0:51:34- For the whole wall? - For the whole wall.

0:51:34 > 0:51:36That's kind of amazing, really.

0:51:36 > 0:51:38If you went to a contractor and asked for somebody to make you

0:51:38 > 0:51:41a custom leather wall, it would be many thousands.

0:51:41 > 0:51:45I'm so happy and so delighted that we went for this choice in the end.

0:51:45 > 0:51:49Without this wall, I don't think this space would have been complete.

0:51:53 > 0:51:56'Fire doors still need to be fitted on the ground floor,

0:51:56 > 0:51:58'as does the balustrade on the stairs.

0:51:58 > 0:52:03'But it's the £600 screen that elevates the off-the-peg staircase

0:52:03 > 0:52:05'into something far more grand.'

0:52:05 > 0:52:07It's such a beautiful piece of decoration,

0:52:07 > 0:52:09- but also has a real meaning for you. - It's a blessing.

0:52:09 > 0:52:11As soon as you walk in, you want to say,

0:52:11 > 0:52:14"Where we've got in life, we want to thank Allah, the Almighty."

0:52:14 > 0:52:16I think it's just so unique.

0:52:17 > 0:52:20Of course, this is also a piece of architecture, in some ways,

0:52:20 > 0:52:23because you have something fantastic that does allow your eye to carry through,

0:52:23 > 0:52:25it does transform the space.

0:52:28 > 0:52:32And upstairs, they've embraced their own idea of luxury.

0:52:35 > 0:52:36The gold and mocha colour scheme

0:52:36 > 0:52:39adds richness to the only completed bedroom.

0:52:41 > 0:52:44Much of the rest of the house is still work in progress,

0:52:44 > 0:52:47partly because they haven't compromised on finishes

0:52:47 > 0:52:49to get their "Dubai hotel" look.

0:52:55 > 0:52:58The porcelain floor tiles cost £1,200,

0:52:58 > 0:53:00but they could've spent a fraction of that

0:53:00 > 0:53:02had they adopted Piers' suggestion

0:53:02 > 0:53:04of polishing the concrete floor which lies beneath them.

0:53:06 > 0:53:09Piers, you always want to see concrete in these places,

0:53:09 > 0:53:10but...not everybody finds it beautiful.

0:53:10 > 0:53:14- Maybe to some, porcelain is. - Actually, I think you did find it beautiful.- We did.

0:53:14 > 0:53:15Right up until a couple of months,

0:53:15 > 0:53:19we were still going to have polished concrete. Um...

0:53:19 > 0:53:23But then, when we saw these tiles, we just couldn't help ourselves.

0:53:23 > 0:53:24We just had to get them.

0:53:24 > 0:53:26But there was another low-cost design idea

0:53:26 > 0:53:29which could have transformed the space even more.

0:53:29 > 0:53:33What I notice, of course, is that you have put a chandelier up here.

0:53:33 > 0:53:36You haven't done those 10 or 12 suspended bulbs.

0:53:36 > 0:53:39- What happened there?- To be honest, we didn't really like it.

0:53:39 > 0:53:41We weren't too keen on it.

0:53:41 > 0:53:43And more than that, it was the fact that it was costing us

0:53:43 > 0:53:45around about the same anyway.

0:53:45 > 0:53:47But I saw think something huge here

0:53:47 > 0:53:49that was non-standard could have been great.

0:53:49 > 0:53:52I will say something. The idea of the cluster lights,

0:53:52 > 0:53:53we haven't totally ditched it.

0:53:53 > 0:53:56- We will use the idea... - Somewhere in the house. - Somewhere in the house.

0:53:56 > 0:53:58To be honest, most of his ideas

0:53:58 > 0:54:00have made such a big impact on the house,

0:54:00 > 0:54:02so really thankful to you for that.

0:54:02 > 0:54:05But I think that the point is that they're really your ideas.

0:54:05 > 0:54:08You've taken things we've shown you, things we've suggested

0:54:08 > 0:54:10and you've always made them your own.

0:54:10 > 0:54:13They've achieved their goal of a family home

0:54:13 > 0:54:14with a sense of grandeur.

0:54:14 > 0:54:17But how have brotherly relations fared?

0:54:17 > 0:54:20It's not always easy, because Naim being Naim, clearly,

0:54:20 > 0:54:23he is not the easiest guy to work with - we've disagreed a lot.

0:54:23 > 0:54:25The biggest difference of opinion was the leather wall.

0:54:25 > 0:54:28- You had to really stand up for it. - I stood my ground and said,

0:54:28 > 0:54:31"Naim, this is going to be something spectacular."

0:54:33 > 0:54:34I mean, at first, I were thinking...

0:54:34 > 0:54:36"What the hell is this leather wall?"

0:54:36 > 0:54:38Did you think he was a bit crazy?

0:54:38 > 0:54:40I thought you and him were both crazy.

0:54:40 > 0:54:41But it turned out quite well.

0:54:43 > 0:54:45I will say this - I think building this house together

0:54:45 > 0:54:47that has made the relationship closer.

0:54:47 > 0:54:48Hopefully he can appreciate

0:54:48 > 0:54:51and respect my design choices more now, after this.

0:54:51 > 0:54:55It's been difficult at times, but the finished product

0:54:55 > 0:54:57is absolutely fabulous and excellent, to be honest.

0:54:57 > 0:54:59It was good ideas, to be honest.

0:54:59 > 0:55:03They certainly could have made more savings along the way,

0:55:03 > 0:55:08but how much has this slice of Lancashire luxury cost?

0:55:08 > 0:55:10How much did you have in your budget and how much have you spent?

0:55:10 > 0:55:14I had a total of £100,000 for the budget

0:55:14 > 0:55:17and I've spent £109,986.

0:55:17 > 0:55:21That extremely precise! Why did you end up going over budget?

0:55:21 > 0:55:24When it comes to the interior, we are not going to compromise.

0:55:24 > 0:55:26There's been occasions where we've liked something,

0:55:26 > 0:55:29it's been expensive, but we just really wanted to go for it,

0:55:29 > 0:55:31because it's not every day you get to build a house.

0:55:31 > 0:55:34I think one of the reasons we went over budget -

0:55:34 > 0:55:35the main reason, in my view, as well -

0:55:35 > 0:55:38- is that I don't think we realised how big the house was.- Yeah.

0:55:38 > 0:55:41Until we started doing the decor, interior work inside,

0:55:41 > 0:55:43then we realised it was never-ending.

0:55:43 > 0:55:44I think we underestimated that.

0:55:44 > 0:55:48It really does feel, though, like a lot of house for the money.

0:55:48 > 0:55:51It's an astonishing achievement, I think, to have pulled it off.

0:55:51 > 0:55:53I'm delighted. It's an emotional moment for me,

0:55:53 > 0:55:57because I've had a dream of building a house since I was 18 years old.

0:56:00 > 0:56:01This is not just for myself and Anam.

0:56:01 > 0:56:03We want the family to enjoy it as well.

0:56:03 > 0:56:05Especially for your parents, didn't you?

0:56:05 > 0:56:07- A space for them to use. - I wanted to do something special

0:56:07 > 0:56:11for my mother and father, because they've been amazing.

0:56:11 > 0:56:12I couldn't be more happy.

0:56:14 > 0:56:16Hiya! You OK?

0:56:23 > 0:56:26I think Wajid and Anam - perhaps Wajid, particularly -

0:56:26 > 0:56:28was suspicious of what design could do for him

0:56:28 > 0:56:30and I think he saw it as something unnecessary.

0:56:30 > 0:56:33And I think that he has understood

0:56:33 > 0:56:36that design can really enhance your life

0:56:36 > 0:56:38and, for no more money,

0:56:38 > 0:56:40can actually completely transform a living environment

0:56:40 > 0:56:44from something quite ho-hum to something really good.

0:56:47 > 0:56:49So, which bit do you like best?

0:56:49 > 0:56:52Um, I like the kind of opening when you walk in.

0:56:52 > 0:56:53I think it's absolutely stunning.

0:56:53 > 0:56:56It kind of gives you a really grand feeling.

0:56:56 > 0:57:01You going to build a leather wall in your house? A gold screen?

0:57:01 > 0:57:02I've been inspired -

0:57:02 > 0:57:05actually, the whole design and everything, it's...

0:57:05 > 0:57:07I couldn't have thought of it.

0:57:09 > 0:57:11It's just amazing.

0:57:11 > 0:57:13Something that we were looking forward to for so many months

0:57:13 > 0:57:15and finally, everyone's together,

0:57:15 > 0:57:17enjoying the space, enjoying the house.

0:57:17 > 0:57:20It's a wonderful feeling, because when you've got friends and family,

0:57:20 > 0:57:22great people, as we had today,

0:57:22 > 0:57:24it's nice to share your happiness with people.

0:57:25 > 0:57:27Wajid and Anam have achieved something, I think,

0:57:27 > 0:57:31really unique with this house, because they haven't just built

0:57:31 > 0:57:33a kind of dream around them and their daughter

0:57:33 > 0:57:34and their small family unit.

0:57:34 > 0:57:37This is a building that's for their extended family and, really,

0:57:37 > 0:57:39for the whole community.

0:57:39 > 0:57:41It's sort of humbling and makes you feel joyful

0:57:41 > 0:57:44about the potential of architecture to bring people together.
