0:00:02 > 0:00:05Today, choosing the right property is harder than ever.

0:00:05 > 0:00:09So how can you navigate the house-hunt hullabaloo?

0:00:09 > 0:00:12Why pay for a property done to someone else's taste

0:00:12 > 0:00:14when you can bag yourself a bargain wreck

0:00:14 > 0:00:17and potentially add value as you create your own home?

0:00:17 > 0:00:21I want to hunt down the best wrecks on the market

0:00:21 > 0:00:24and show our couples that renovation is the way forward.

0:00:24 > 0:00:27But who wants to live in a building site?

0:00:27 > 0:00:29Not me. I'm on a mission to prove you don't have to

0:00:29 > 0:00:33blow your budget to get everything you want in your new home.

0:00:33 > 0:00:36Because I reckon pristine pads are the way to go.

0:00:37 > 0:00:40So, can I tantalise today's buyers with one of my readies?

0:00:40 > 0:00:44Or will can I steal them away from Jane's clutches with one of my wrecks?

0:00:44 > 0:00:46Let's find out.

0:00:54 > 0:00:58Today, we're searching along the south-west tip of Wales,

0:00:58 > 0:01:01from Haverfordwest to Carmarthen, and south to the sea.

0:01:01 > 0:01:03Prices here are low.

0:01:03 > 0:01:08Houses cost about £50,000 below the national average, which is great news

0:01:08 > 0:01:13for today's house hunters, David and Susan, who have £237,000 to spend on their new home.

0:01:14 > 0:01:19David has recently retired from his job as a motor-vehicle design engineer,

0:01:19 > 0:01:23and the couple are now planning the rest of their lives together.

0:01:23 > 0:01:25They were teenage sweethearts a few years back,

0:01:25 > 0:01:27and were even once engaged.

0:01:27 > 0:01:30After a long break, 27 years in fact,

0:01:30 > 0:01:35they rekindled their relationship and fell in love all over again.

0:01:35 > 0:01:38Don't get emotional, Farnham. We've got work to do.

0:01:38 > 0:01:42David and Susan's Essex bungalow is on the market, and they're looking to up sticks

0:01:42 > 0:01:44and get more space in the countryside.

0:01:44 > 0:01:48Susan loves the beach, and has always loved the South Wales coast,

0:01:48 > 0:01:52and David says he's happy to give Susan what she wants.

0:01:52 > 0:01:56He sounds perfect, but before we can start looking for a new dream home,

0:01:56 > 0:01:57we need to find their criteria.

0:01:57 > 0:02:01- And see who's up for a wreck... - ..and who wants a ready.

0:02:01 > 0:02:05So, time to meet David and Susan. Marvellous.

0:02:08 > 0:02:11- I'm Susan.- And I'm Dave.

0:02:11 > 0:02:15The type of property that we're after is preferably a three-bedroom house.

0:02:15 > 0:02:18I would really like one that's quirky.

0:02:20 > 0:02:24I mean, something like a church, or in Wales, a chapel, something like that.

0:02:24 > 0:02:26With a graveyard wouldn't be a problem for me.

0:02:26 > 0:02:29It must have a downstairs toilet.

0:02:29 > 0:02:32A fair-size bedroom to put all my clothes,

0:02:32 > 0:02:35as I've got rather a lot of clothes, as David will tell you!

0:02:35 > 0:02:37- Sounds familiar doesn't it?!- Yeah!

0:02:37 > 0:02:42I can't get in and out of a bath, so I would need a shower.

0:02:42 > 0:02:46We've got four cats as well as our two dogs, so we've got a small zoo!

0:02:46 > 0:02:48They need their own little area, then?

0:02:48 > 0:02:50I would prefer a wreck-type property.

0:02:50 > 0:02:55A property that needs renovation, needs a lot of work doing, where I can get in with my sledgehammer.

0:02:55 > 0:03:00Typical man! He wants to go in, throw his manliness around the house!

0:03:00 > 0:03:06Having done this kitchen before, I feel I could do the same again.

0:03:06 > 0:03:09I walked in here with a sledgehammer and ripped the thing out.

0:03:09 > 0:03:12In fairness, he's done a good job there with that kitchen.

0:03:12 > 0:03:15- He seems handy.- You know, it's always the bloke, isn't it?

0:03:15 > 0:03:19"I've done it before." We're probably going to hear now, "He did it, it was a nightmare,

0:03:19 > 0:03:22- "we lived on a building site." - How long did it take?

0:03:22 > 0:03:23A mess, covered in dust.

0:03:23 > 0:03:27It didn't matter how much you covered the furniture up, shut the doors.

0:03:27 > 0:03:31- You've got your work cut out! - It was a bit of a nightmare.

0:03:31 > 0:03:36That's why I say I don't want another house that is a wreck,

0:03:36 > 0:03:39because I think, could I go through that again?!

0:03:39 > 0:03:42I will win this until you change my mind!

0:03:42 > 0:03:44- He said it!- That's my boy!

0:03:44 > 0:03:48- You always get your own way.- That's because you know I'm always right!

0:03:48 > 0:03:51Look, we're up against it. I know we always say that,

0:03:51 > 0:03:56but a three-bedroom detached house with land in beautiful Pembrokeshire.

0:03:56 > 0:04:00- I think we can find them something. - Find them a church with a graveyard?!

0:04:00 > 0:04:03- Possibly not! - I don't think so.- Probably not!

0:04:03 > 0:04:08I personally don't think Susan will entertain a wreck.

0:04:08 > 0:04:12I think she might turn around and come round to that.

0:04:12 > 0:04:15At the end of the day, her requirements are simple.

0:04:15 > 0:04:17A shower, a walk-in shower,

0:04:17 > 0:04:20and a toilet downstairs, and those can be added to any property.

0:04:20 > 0:04:24- We've got to find somewhere for those dogs to go.- Battersea?

0:04:25 > 0:04:29They're too nice! You can't say that!

0:04:29 > 0:04:33So, Susan wants a ready, but my man David is up for a wreck.

0:04:33 > 0:04:37Their current Essex house is on the market, so they're hoping to get a quick sale

0:04:37 > 0:04:41and head on out to beautiful South Wales as soon as possible.

0:04:41 > 0:04:44So, David and Susan want...

0:04:47 > 0:04:49..and most of all, it has to be fairly rural.

0:04:49 > 0:04:53And all of this with a maximum budget of £237,000.

0:04:53 > 0:04:56We've got our work cut out for us,

0:04:56 > 0:04:59especially as Susan loves all things gothic and Victorian.

0:04:59 > 0:05:01Oh, and with a graveyard, if possible.

0:05:01 > 0:05:03Susan decides she wants to move.

0:05:03 > 0:05:09Susan decides South Wales. Susan decides. Dave doesn't.

0:05:09 > 0:05:12- I think I've got this in the bag. - You could be right, Jane,

0:05:12 > 0:05:17but I'm banking on David's desire to swing a sledgehammer.

0:05:17 > 0:05:21Susan wears the trousers, but she doesn't look like she has any intention of a wreck.

0:05:21 > 0:05:25I really need Dave to fight his corner for me today.

0:05:26 > 0:05:28So, I'm kicking off the search in Pembroke.

0:05:28 > 0:05:30A pretty town with a medieval castle,

0:05:30 > 0:05:33so gothic lover Susan should feel at home.

0:05:33 > 0:05:37Plus, property prices here have dropped nearly 10% in the last year,

0:05:37 > 0:05:40and a detached house averages around 225,000,

0:05:40 > 0:05:44so I'm hoping value for money here should win over David.

0:05:44 > 0:05:46Here we are on the outskirts of Pembroke,

0:05:46 > 0:05:53and we've come to see said property opposite.

0:05:53 > 0:05:55- It's the Old Post Office. - That's nice.

0:05:55 > 0:05:57First thing you might notice is the road.

0:05:57 > 0:06:02- I don't think you could fail to miss that.- No.- Could be a problem.

0:06:02 > 0:06:03Property's lovely.

0:06:03 > 0:06:06- I love stone-built properties.- Good.

0:06:06 > 0:06:09- Well, shall we go and have a look then?- Yeah.- Let's go.

0:06:09 > 0:06:11Lead the way. Mind the road.

0:06:11 > 0:06:15So, my first ready is a large three-bedroom semi-detached cottage.

0:06:15 > 0:06:17No graveyard, but it's bursting with

0:06:17 > 0:06:20those all-important period features that Susan loves.

0:06:20 > 0:06:25It's got panoramic views and a decent-sized garden for their cats and dogs.

0:06:25 > 0:06:29The Old Post Office is on the market for £189,950,

0:06:29 > 0:06:34almost 50 grand under budget for David and Susan.

0:06:34 > 0:06:39- So, a rather large study at the front of the house.- Oh, this is nice.

0:06:39 > 0:06:43- And this is the living room.- Oh, this is nice, yeah.- I like that wall.

0:06:43 > 0:06:47- Lots of character in this house. You said you liked character. - Don't like modern.

0:06:47 > 0:06:50I like old houses, plenty of character, quirky.

0:06:50 > 0:06:52- Little bit on the small side so far...- I like that.

0:06:52 > 0:06:54- It's all nice and cosy.- Yeah.

0:06:54 > 0:07:00One thing I have picked up here, there seems to be a difference in opinion on room sizes.

0:07:00 > 0:07:03Where's the compromise going to be?

0:07:03 > 0:07:05David compromises!

0:07:05 > 0:07:08Something a little bit bigger than this, probably.

0:07:08 > 0:07:10If there were three reception rooms...

0:07:10 > 0:07:12We might be able to sort that out. Let's look at the back,

0:07:12 > 0:07:15which I think you'll be pleasantly surprised with.

0:07:15 > 0:07:19- This is what I really wanted to show you out here.- Oh, wow.

0:07:19 > 0:07:23- This is something special.- That is...

0:07:23 > 0:07:26It's a conservatory, and the views, what you wanted.

0:07:26 > 0:07:29- That is absolutely superb.- This is why you move to Wales!- Excellent.

0:07:29 > 0:07:35I mean, if you like it on a day like this what's it going to be like when the sun's shining?

0:07:35 > 0:07:39- Yeah, good point. Well, look, these are great reactions. - It is. I'm really positive,

0:07:39 > 0:07:42and I'm glad you can see the potential.

0:07:42 > 0:07:44What I want you to do is have a look in the kitchen,

0:07:44 > 0:07:49the shower room and also upstairs, and we'll wait down here

0:07:49 > 0:07:53- and find out more after you've had a good tour.- Fill your boots. Enjoy.

0:07:53 > 0:07:55Well, hats off to you, Jane.

0:07:55 > 0:07:59- Sounds like they love it here. - It's nice, in't it? Nice room. - It's a double room.

0:07:59 > 0:08:03Yep, if David and Susan are looking to walk straight in

0:08:03 > 0:08:07and start their new life in Wales, this property has the lot.

0:08:07 > 0:08:11A walk-in shower, which was on their wish list, and the current owners have pets,

0:08:11 > 0:08:16- so they can cope with animals near a main road.- Oh, this is nice. - Oh, I like the colour.

0:08:16 > 0:08:20- This is the master bedroom, and you've got the view. - Oh, that's lovely.

0:08:20 > 0:08:23Wake up every morning to that. It's really nice.

0:08:23 > 0:08:26Jonnie, it looks like they absolutely love my first ready of the day.

0:08:26 > 0:08:31- Worried?- A little bit. David's not wanting to smash any walls down yet.

0:08:31 > 0:08:35I reckon I might struggle today, but it's still early.

0:08:35 > 0:08:39- Dave's forgotten about the house! - Forgotten about the road as well.

0:08:39 > 0:08:43I thought that was going to be a sticking point, but it seems it's not an issue at all.

0:08:43 > 0:08:45This house faces that way, and it just goes to show,

0:08:45 > 0:08:49if you've got a real positive like not only the land,

0:08:49 > 0:08:53- but that view, they'll forget about a compromise.- Gorgeous.

0:08:53 > 0:08:56You could sit out there all day and just look, couldn't you?

0:08:56 > 0:08:57- Have me barbecue.- Oh, yeah.

0:08:57 > 0:09:02Don't forget your barbecue, and a glass of wine! Fall down this garden, literally!

0:09:02 > 0:09:05Not sure I'd better give them another view like this,

0:09:05 > 0:09:07but I think I'll centre on character.

0:09:07 > 0:09:11Yeah, the character's good, but also I just feel really positive,

0:09:11 > 0:09:13because this is a really good start to our day.

0:09:13 > 0:09:19Just cos you've got one scratched up, "I feel really positive!" Good for you!

0:09:20 > 0:09:24Right, time to wipe that smug grin off Jane's face.

0:09:24 > 0:09:27To find these guys a wreck with money to spare, we're off into

0:09:27 > 0:09:32the Welsh countryside, away from those expensive coastal locations.

0:09:32 > 0:09:35Llanboidy is a small farming hamlet 15 miles west of Carmarthen.

0:09:35 > 0:09:39It's very rural and very off the beaten track,

0:09:39 > 0:09:43but I'm pinning my hopes on David's hunger for a project.

0:09:43 > 0:09:46As I said, David wants a project, and boy, have I found one!

0:09:46 > 0:09:51This old schoolmaster's house has just come on the market at £190,000,

0:09:51 > 0:09:5347 grand under budget.

0:09:54 > 0:09:56Now then, welcome to Llanboidy.

0:09:56 > 0:10:00- I hope I've pronounced that right! - You have, perfectly.- Get in!

0:10:00 > 0:10:04- What about this?- Gorgeous. - Yeah, it's lovely.- Very nice.

0:10:04 > 0:10:09- This is as much traffic as you'll get. Cope with that?- Yeah.

0:10:11 > 0:10:15And you've got the bonus of having a local pub within stumbling distance

0:10:15 > 0:10:18and a local shop and post office.

0:10:18 > 0:10:23Plus, you've seen around. Look at these views.

0:10:23 > 0:10:26You've got so much dog walking right on your doorstep here.

0:10:26 > 0:10:29This three-bed house has a lower ground floor that's set up

0:10:29 > 0:10:32as a one-bed flat, so lots of renovation potential

0:10:32 > 0:10:37and extra space for David to get excited about.

0:10:37 > 0:10:41It's also got great character features to tickle Susan's gothic bones.

0:10:41 > 0:10:46Now, that big entrance hall could be made to be really grand, couldn't it?

0:10:46 > 0:10:51- Very welcoming. So, first impressions, please. Dave?- Size. Nice size.

0:10:51 > 0:10:55- 'Tis, isn't it?- Yes, twice the size of what we've got now.

0:10:55 > 0:11:00- I like that range. I think that is lovely.- That's staying, then? - That's definitely staying, yes.

0:11:00 > 0:11:05Good. The job here is getting it just brought into this century, if you like.

0:11:05 > 0:11:09- Making it comfortable for you guys. But you could live in this place. - Oh, yeah...

0:11:09 > 0:11:15I'd want to do it restore it back to its Victorian thing, yeah.

0:11:15 > 0:11:19- You have to be sympathetic to that. - Like, a Victorian bathroom put in.

0:11:19 > 0:11:23Get back to the floorboards and have the rugs on the floor

0:11:23 > 0:11:24and things like that.

0:11:24 > 0:11:26Thinking already, thinking ahead!

0:11:26 > 0:11:31I'll tell you what, at the moment I know that you wanted a wreck...

0:11:31 > 0:11:36..but it seems to be that I'm pleasing Sue here, maybe even more.

0:11:36 > 0:11:38What's happened there?!

0:11:38 > 0:11:41I think I love it cos it's Victorian

0:11:41 > 0:11:44and it's still got some of its original features,

0:11:44 > 0:11:48and then if it hasn't got them, you can put them back,

0:11:48 > 0:11:50and you can restore it as it was.

0:11:50 > 0:11:55You can put the chandeliers, the heavy drape curtains, and all that sort of thing.

0:11:55 > 0:11:58- This is your sort of house, isn't it?- Yeah.

0:11:58 > 0:12:01People who know me would say, "Oh, that is Sue's house,"

0:12:01 > 0:12:05as soon as they saw it, just from the outside.

0:12:05 > 0:12:08In your face, Farnham! I see your panoramic views

0:12:08 > 0:12:12and I raise you some Victoriana, plus a quiet road outside.

0:12:12 > 0:12:17- Susan loves my wreck.- No-one likes a show-off, Jonnie, but well done.

0:12:19 > 0:12:22The house immediately needs a new kitchen and bathroom,

0:12:22 > 0:12:24which should come in at around £13,000,

0:12:24 > 0:12:30which will give David's DIY-ing alter ego lots of stuff to get to grips with.

0:12:30 > 0:12:32- A nice, big bedroom. - A nice-size bedroom.

0:12:32 > 0:12:35- Plenty of wardrobe space. - Plenty of work!

0:12:37 > 0:12:41- Sounds like you've moved yourself in already!- I have!

0:12:41 > 0:12:46I'm laying out the bedroom, where the wardrobes are going, where you've got to build wardrobes!

0:12:46 > 0:12:50- This is a very hard decision, isn't it?- Yeah, I know there's a lot of work,

0:12:50 > 0:12:54but you can see it in your mind what it would look like

0:12:54 > 0:12:58once it's all done, and you restore it back to as it was, its grandeur.

0:12:58 > 0:13:02As soon as we walked up that road and I saw this from a distance,

0:13:02 > 0:13:06I knew you'd fall in love with this, cos this has got Sue written all over it.

0:13:06 > 0:13:09- It's your sort of place.- Yeah, you could call it Sue's Village!

0:13:12 > 0:13:15- That went well. - Yeah, pretty chuffed.- I would be!

0:13:15 > 0:13:18Thank you, Victorian architecture!

0:13:18 > 0:13:21I think I want to stick with more of the same, really.

0:13:21 > 0:13:24Big is beautiful by the sounds of it, so I'll try and get

0:13:24 > 0:13:28as big as possible, maybe try and squeeze a detached out of the budget.

0:13:28 > 0:13:32Yeah, why not? I personally need to focus on location.

0:13:32 > 0:13:34That's the key, somewhere not on a great big, busy road.

0:13:34 > 0:13:37I reckon a big tip here, find a pub!

0:13:38 > 0:13:41Actually, that's a really good thought!

0:13:41 > 0:13:42What a quandary!

0:13:42 > 0:13:46How to please a couple that are, well, frankly so easy to please!

0:13:46 > 0:13:50I'm calling about the four-bed detached on at 235.

0:13:50 > 0:13:55They could well end up loving all of our properties, but I'm not convinced we have a winner yet,

0:13:55 > 0:14:00so it's time to split up and search more ground.

0:14:00 > 0:14:03Hats off to them. They're moving to an area they're not all that familiar with,

0:14:03 > 0:14:07and the first two properties we've shown them, they've loved.

0:14:07 > 0:14:12They haven't discounted anything, but therein lies the problem. We still are none the wiser,

0:14:12 > 0:14:17and we almost are starting this search again from scratch this afternoon.

0:14:17 > 0:14:19This is going to be interesting.

0:14:19 > 0:14:24Now, I'm thinking about dog walking for this couple,

0:14:24 > 0:14:27and Susan wants to be by the sea, so I'm heading south again to Llansteffan,

0:14:27 > 0:14:31close to some gorgeous sandy beaches.

0:14:31 > 0:14:36Ideal for getting some exercise, fresh air and walking those dogs.

0:14:36 > 0:14:38I think I've found everything they want.

0:14:38 > 0:14:40The trouble is, it's nearly 250 grand.

0:14:40 > 0:14:44That's 13,000 over David and Susan's budget!

0:14:44 > 0:14:47There's not much room to negotiate, as the vendors have already

0:14:47 > 0:14:49knocked back a few low offers.

0:14:51 > 0:14:53So, I've brought you down towards the coast.

0:14:53 > 0:14:57We're just outside Llansteffan, about three quarters of a mile away.

0:14:57 > 0:15:01You've got your own babbling brook. Can I ask what your first impressions are?

0:15:01 > 0:15:04This is right up my street, this sort of place.

0:15:04 > 0:15:07Location, or the property?

0:15:07 > 0:15:11- Both.- Well, David's happy again, but Susan seems suspiciously quiet.

0:15:11 > 0:15:15- Sue, you loved the last place.- Yeah. - What are you feeling here?

0:15:15 > 0:15:20- I do like it, but... - Is your heart still with the other?

0:15:20 > 0:15:24Yeah! But this is a lovely property, though. It is really nice.

0:15:24 > 0:15:29Well, don't discount it just yet, Sue, cos it's got a lot to offer, this house,

0:15:29 > 0:15:33and I think you're really going to like it, so keep your eyes open.

0:15:33 > 0:15:37I was hoping this property might be exactly what they're looking for.

0:15:37 > 0:15:40It's rural but not isolated, has three bedrooms,

0:15:40 > 0:15:45a beautiful garden, and best of all, David doesn't need to lift a finger.

0:15:45 > 0:15:49- It's a really beautiful property. - Oh, this is more like it.

0:15:49 > 0:15:53This is really, really nice, and you can move straight into this place.

0:15:53 > 0:15:58That's down to Sue. I think there's some work to do to convince her to take her heart

0:15:58 > 0:16:00out of the village.

0:16:00 > 0:16:03It was just cos it was Victorian, and I just love Victorian.

0:16:03 > 0:16:06- You've still got high ceilings in here.- It's still got character.

0:16:06 > 0:16:09Being in this area, seeing the amount of work

0:16:09 > 0:16:13I had to do at the Victorian wreck, moving into this one,

0:16:13 > 0:16:17where I'd want to start enjoying myself now I'm retired...

0:16:17 > 0:16:22Whereas the Victorian wreck, I'd be six, eight, ten months. This is all done for me.

0:16:22 > 0:16:25Sorry, Jonnie, but I think you're losing David to

0:16:25 > 0:16:27the charms of my ready.

0:16:27 > 0:16:31But then Susan still loves my renovation project.

0:16:31 > 0:16:34- This is confusing.- He's talking a lot of sense, isn't he?

0:16:34 > 0:16:36- He is talking sense. - He's talking your sense!

0:16:36 > 0:16:39He's taking the words right out of your mouth!

0:16:39 > 0:16:42Being realistic, this would be the better option,

0:16:42 > 0:16:45even though my heart is with the Victorian,

0:16:45 > 0:16:48but I've got to get me head to rule and not me heart.

0:16:48 > 0:16:52Of course. You go and explore. See if you can get a feel for the place.

0:16:52 > 0:16:54That's what's important, you have to have that feeing.

0:16:54 > 0:17:00- See if you get the feeling for this place like I've got!- Have fun.

0:17:01 > 0:17:06On paper, this property ticks a lot of David and Susan's boxes.

0:17:06 > 0:17:07Oh, yeah, that's nice.

0:17:07 > 0:17:10There's a downstairs shower and toilet,

0:17:10 > 0:17:14it's beautifully decorated, and it's close to that beach.

0:17:14 > 0:17:17But it's at the very top of their budget, Jane.

0:17:17 > 0:17:21Frankly, I think Susan's heart is still on my last project.

0:17:21 > 0:17:23So, I'm slightly confused.

0:17:23 > 0:17:27We started out the search with Dave wanting a wreck, and now he wants a ready.

0:17:27 > 0:17:32Sue, on the other hand, wanted a ready, and now she wants a wreck.

0:17:32 > 0:17:35They both need to put their heads together

0:17:35 > 0:17:38and really come to a decision, decide what they both want to do,

0:17:38 > 0:17:41because at the moment I'm struggling.

0:17:41 > 0:17:46That's a lovely garden. It's a lovely house.

0:17:46 > 0:17:52Everything you wanted, all done for you. Move in, drop your suitcases, beach within a mile or so.

0:17:52 > 0:17:56I wanted the wreck, but then having seen the Victorian wreck

0:17:56 > 0:17:59and then seeing this, that's all ready, I'm thinking,

0:17:59 > 0:18:05do I want to take on all that work on me own?

0:18:05 > 0:18:10You wouldn't have to do anything to this, but I thought you wanted a place a little bit bigger.

0:18:10 > 0:18:14- Size isn't everything.- Oh, now David's changing his mind about size!

0:18:14 > 0:18:18- Apparently it's not everything. I must tell Jonnie.- Hello?

0:18:18 > 0:18:24- Hello, Jonnie.- Hiya, how are you? - I'm confused. I need help.

0:18:24 > 0:18:25Oh, no! What's happened?

0:18:25 > 0:18:28It seems we've got a complete role reversal going on here.

0:18:28 > 0:18:31They haven't got a clue what they want now.

0:18:31 > 0:18:35Dave walked in, absolutely loved it.

0:18:35 > 0:18:39If he'd had his bags packed in the car, I think

0:18:39 > 0:18:41- he would have moved straight in. - That's good.

0:18:41 > 0:18:45Sue, completely different lady to what we saw at your wreck.

0:18:45 > 0:18:50Just not quite feeling it. So you're going to have to pull out all the stops for your last one.

0:18:50 > 0:18:53If it's a role reversal, do I get to wear a dress?

0:18:53 > 0:18:57- You can wear a dress whenever you want!- Great, I'm on my way!

0:18:57 > 0:18:59- I'll see you in a bit! Bye.- Bye.

0:18:59 > 0:19:02Yeah, I think you'd look good in a dress!

0:19:02 > 0:19:05Jane may have split the camp with her last ready,

0:19:05 > 0:19:09but I'm determined to get David and Susan to agree on my last wreck.

0:19:09 > 0:19:12Good luck, Jonnie. I think we've done a complete 180.

0:19:12 > 0:19:17I'm confused. Does Susan still want a wreck, or did David just say he liked my ready?

0:19:17 > 0:19:22Don't worry, Jane. I've got an ace up my sleeve in a pretty holiday village called Laugharne,

0:19:22 > 0:19:2314 miles south of Carmarthen.

0:19:23 > 0:19:27Properties here went down in value over the last year, so I reckon

0:19:27 > 0:19:30they'll get more for their budget, especially if they buy a wreck.

0:19:30 > 0:19:33So, Dave and Sue, welcome to lovely Laugharne.

0:19:33 > 0:19:38- Now, you know Laugharne, don't you? - Yes. Dylan Thomas' boatyard.- Indeed.

0:19:38 > 0:19:39- Beautiful place.- BOTH:- Lovely.

0:19:39 > 0:19:44- I know you've done a bit of research on the internet, haven't you, looking at houses.- Yes.

0:19:44 > 0:19:46- Does this ring any bells? - Yes, this one does.- OK.

0:19:46 > 0:19:50- Have you looked inside it?- No.

0:19:50 > 0:19:53- Do you want to look inside it?- Yes. - Good! Sue?- Yes.

0:19:53 > 0:19:57- Are you sure?- Yes. - Excellent. Let's have a butcher's.

0:19:59 > 0:20:02This cottage is on the market for £195,000,

0:20:03 > 0:20:05over £40,000 under David and Susan's budget,

0:20:05 > 0:20:09which gives them plenty of spare cash for any Victorian renovation work.

0:20:09 > 0:20:13It's been rented out for ten years, and it's been on and off the market for a while.

0:20:13 > 0:20:17It's in the heart of the village, and best of all, it's walking distance to the beach.

0:20:17 > 0:20:19This is the main room of the house.

0:20:19 > 0:20:23- Come right in and tell me what you think.- Nice size. Very nice size.

0:20:23 > 0:20:26Needs some work doing, but that's not a problem.

0:20:26 > 0:20:30- You either look disgusted or surprised...- Surprised.- Good!

0:20:30 > 0:20:32Put a new kitchen in it, it'll be lovely.

0:20:32 > 0:20:37Sounds like you've almost come on board here, Sue. Yeah? Welcome!

0:20:37 > 0:20:41It's a happy boat, isn't it? Brilliant. Love it.

0:20:41 > 0:20:43No, Susan, don't get on board HMS Irwin!

0:20:43 > 0:20:48I can feel my ready power being taken from me again, but well done, Jonnie.

0:20:48 > 0:20:53- Now, look at the size of this room here.- Oh, my God. It's huge.

0:20:53 > 0:20:55- That's more like it. - Lovely big room.

0:20:55 > 0:21:00She's working out how many wardrobes we can get in here!

0:21:00 > 0:21:03Take that sink out, wardrobes, wardrobes...

0:21:03 > 0:21:06I could have wardrobes right along that wall!

0:21:10 > 0:21:13It's all up there now, yeah? Brilliant!

0:21:13 > 0:21:15- Dave, what we've got is... - HE MUMBLES

0:21:15 > 0:21:18And we've got wardrobes there. You got that? Good! Excellent!

0:21:18 > 0:21:21- Don't know where I'll sleep! - You're sleeping... - HE MUMBLES

0:21:21 > 0:21:23But look, this is great.

0:21:23 > 0:21:27What you're doing is visualising a space, which is

0:21:27 > 0:21:30what I implore anybody to do when they look at a wreck.

0:21:30 > 0:21:33Ignore what's here and start putting your furniture in there,

0:21:33 > 0:21:35and use your imagination.

0:21:35 > 0:21:39Have a good look around. This property needs a full refurb.

0:21:39 > 0:21:43We got a local builder in to give us a quote, and it came in at £19,500

0:21:43 > 0:21:47for a new kitchen, en-suite bathroom and general redecoration.

0:21:47 > 0:21:50David could do much of the work himself

0:21:50 > 0:21:53and save himself money, or does he fancy hanging up his DIY tools?

0:21:53 > 0:21:55A nice size. I'd keep this as one room.

0:21:55 > 0:21:58I wouldn't put this back into two rooms again.

0:21:58 > 0:22:00Our day of hunting is drawing to an end.

0:22:00 > 0:22:04It's time to find out if any of our properties have tickled their fancy.

0:22:04 > 0:22:09- Jonnie?- Up here, Jane. - Ah, there you are.- Check me out.

0:22:11 > 0:22:12I am Jimmy Saville!

0:22:12 > 0:22:15- This is where his furniture's stored!- Jonnie Saville!

0:22:15 > 0:22:18- JIMMY SAVILLE VOICE: - What have we here?!

0:22:18 > 0:22:19Yeah, well, I'm a bit confused,

0:22:19 > 0:22:23so I'm hoping you've kind of sorted us out with this last property.

0:22:23 > 0:22:24They quite like it.

0:22:24 > 0:22:30- They really do quite like it, and if you look out there...- Ah!

0:22:30 > 0:22:32Looks like they're discussing it.

0:22:32 > 0:22:34So, Jonnie, confusion reigns

0:22:34 > 0:22:36as the day draws to an end.

0:22:36 > 0:22:38And what a day it's been.

0:22:38 > 0:22:40We started with your ready, the Old Post Office.

0:22:40 > 0:22:44David and Susan loved it, but weren't sure about the location

0:22:44 > 0:22:45and that busy main road.

0:22:45 > 0:22:48Your first wreck was the schoolmaster's house

0:22:48 > 0:22:51with loads of renovation potential,

0:22:51 > 0:22:54which Susan got really excited about.

0:22:56 > 0:22:59Then I took them to a lovely detached cottage by the sea,

0:22:59 > 0:23:03which David loved, but Susan not so much.

0:23:03 > 0:23:06And lastly, I found a project that was way under budget,

0:23:06 > 0:23:10leaving David and Susan enough spare cash for a new kitchen and bathroom.

0:23:10 > 0:23:13They thought it was nice, but then they liked all of them!

0:23:13 > 0:23:16If only everyone was so easy to please!

0:23:16 > 0:23:18But will they actually go for anything?

0:23:18 > 0:23:22They've got the rest of their lives together. So where do they want to be to spend it?

0:23:22 > 0:23:25- Hi, guys.- Hiya.- Hello.

0:23:25 > 0:23:28So, how's it gone? Tell me everything.

0:23:28 > 0:23:34It's been confusing. Very confusing.

0:23:34 > 0:23:36Our job is to confuse you, but in a good way.

0:23:36 > 0:23:40We're confused in a good way. We've seen four good properties,

0:23:40 > 0:23:44- one we have more or less discounted. - Yeah.- Whose one?

0:23:44 > 0:23:49- Number three.- The £240,000 one. It's me that's discounted it. - I'm shocked.- Yep.

0:23:49 > 0:23:54From the outside when I walked up, I thought it was absolutely everything that I wanted.

0:23:54 > 0:23:56I think that the price is a little bit high.

0:23:56 > 0:24:00- First wreck. Mine. What do you think?- Liked it.

0:24:00 > 0:24:04I don't need to ask you, Sue, whether you liked it!

0:24:04 > 0:24:06- You like a bit of Victoriana, don't you?- Yes!

0:24:06 > 0:24:09- At the start, Jane's first ready. - That was a beautiful home.

0:24:09 > 0:24:14- We all agreed on that. - Them views were absolutely stunning.

0:24:14 > 0:24:18- What about this one?- Love this one. - Lovely.- Is this more location, though?- Yes.

0:24:18 > 0:24:21This is all about Sue. You wanted to be near the sea.

0:24:21 > 0:24:25Three cracking houses. So, why don't you have a think about it tonight?

0:24:25 > 0:24:27- Yeah.- We're going to keep our phones on.

0:24:27 > 0:24:30We'll be here in the morning, should you need us. You can let us know

0:24:30 > 0:24:33which one you want to go and revisit.

0:24:33 > 0:24:37The end of a very satisfying, if slightly confusing, house hunt.

0:24:37 > 0:24:40There have been role reversals aplenty here,

0:24:40 > 0:24:46and I don't think either of us can tell which way their final decision will go.

0:24:46 > 0:24:50We just need David and Susan to call and put one of us out of our misery.

0:24:50 > 0:24:52- Hi, Jonnie. Hi, Jane.- Hello, Dave.

0:24:52 > 0:24:55So, how did it go last night? Did you have a good think?

0:24:55 > 0:25:00Yes, we burnt the midnight oil till well beyond midnight, and we're now down to one.

0:25:00 > 0:25:03- Ooh, which one? Do tell. - And the winner is...

0:25:05 > 0:25:08- ..Jane.- BOTH: Really?!

0:25:09 > 0:25:11- The Old Post Office. - How much wine did you drink?!

0:25:11 > 0:25:14Probably not as much as youse two!

0:25:14 > 0:25:17Well done, guy. You've come to your own decision on that, and that's great.

0:25:17 > 0:25:21- Couldn't have done it without your help.- I'm surprised.- I'm shocked.

0:25:21 > 0:25:24- Blown away. - They sound really keen, though.

0:25:24 > 0:25:29- But it was a lovely house.- Well, cool. I'm a little bit disappointed.

0:25:29 > 0:25:32Ah, don't take it too hard, Jonnie. It was a very close call.

0:25:32 > 0:25:37The next morning, I sent David and Susan back for a fresh look at the winning property.

0:25:37 > 0:25:41Ready number one, the Old Post Office in Pembroke.

0:25:42 > 0:25:47We've done the right thing, David, coming back and looking at this place again.

0:25:47 > 0:25:51- We'll go out and have a look out the garden shall we?- Yeah. - Now the sun's shining.

0:25:51 > 0:25:56The gorgeous panoramic views won it for you in the end, Jane.

0:25:56 > 0:26:00- Well, it looks like you're right again, Sue.- You can see the sea there.- There's your sea view.

0:26:00 > 0:26:04Plus, David and Susan thought the Old Post Office seemed

0:26:04 > 0:26:07bigger on the inside than it did on the outside.

0:26:07 > 0:26:12- I knew you was right. - I'm always right, David! - I should have learnt by now!

0:26:12 > 0:26:15David and Susan loved the Old Post Office so much that

0:26:15 > 0:26:20they put in an offer of 187,500, and it was accepted.

0:26:20 > 0:26:24Sadly, the sale on their current Essex home is stuck in a very long chain,

0:26:24 > 0:26:27so the Old Post Office vendors found new buyers.

0:26:27 > 0:26:31David and Susan have dropped their asking price to try for a faster sale,

0:26:31 > 0:26:34and they're still looking for their dream home in South Wales.

0:26:34 > 0:26:39It just goes to show, if you're involved in a chain, someone in a better position can come along

0:26:39 > 0:26:41and nick it in the last moments.

0:26:41 > 0:26:45Frustrating for David and Susan, but their search continues, so best of luck with that,

0:26:45 > 0:26:50and we can rest assured knowing that we did show them some fantastic properties.

0:26:50 > 0:26:52I did show them some, you're absolutely right!

0:26:52 > 0:26:56Please join us again as we battle it out to prove that renovation projects...

0:26:56 > 0:27:00..or readies are the key to finding your new home.
