0:01:34 > 0:01:38It's always a big responsibility to have someone's home in your hands,

0:01:38 > 0:01:41even as a professional interior designer, so I'm really hoping

0:01:41 > 0:01:45these amateur designers can pull it off and take the pressure.

0:01:50 > 0:01:52I've had a passion for interior design

0:01:52 > 0:01:54ever since I was seven years old.

0:01:54 > 0:01:56As each of them has only ever done up their own home,

0:01:56 > 0:01:59they're at the same point I was when I launched my career.

0:01:59 > 0:02:02I've never had the opportunity to unleash my creativity

0:02:02 > 0:02:04on someone's home before.

0:02:04 > 0:02:08I'm giving them the chance to set their creative juices free.

0:02:08 > 0:02:11To help families who are so stuck in design dead ends,

0:02:11 > 0:02:14they're prepared to try anything.

0:02:14 > 0:02:18It's a huge risk, as the home owners won't even meet the amateurs

0:02:18 > 0:02:19until it's all finished.

0:02:24 > 0:02:28Tonight I'm heading to south-east England to meet two families

0:02:28 > 0:02:31with several generations living under one roof.

0:02:31 > 0:02:33With so many people to please,

0:02:33 > 0:02:36I suspect it's going to be a tricky week.

0:02:39 > 0:02:41First up, Ilford in Essex,

0:02:41 > 0:02:43home to the Ahmed family.

0:02:43 > 0:02:45Sherjeel and Khansa,

0:02:45 > 0:02:48his parents Masood and Jalis,

0:02:48 > 0:02:50and little Raees and Imani,

0:02:50 > 0:02:53three generations living in just one house.

0:02:53 > 0:02:55Come from a Pakistani background and culture

0:02:55 > 0:02:58and within our culture it's commonplace for the eldest son

0:02:58 > 0:03:01to look after the parents when they become older.

0:03:01 > 0:03:05He comes home, he looks after the kids, looks after his wife and us,

0:03:05 > 0:03:07and I'm really proud of him.

0:03:08 > 0:03:12Two years ago, the Ahmeds bought a home big enough

0:03:12 > 0:03:13for the whole family.

0:03:13 > 0:03:17But the dreary decor left a lot to be desired.

0:03:17 > 0:03:19When you walk in, it feels incredibly faded and drab.

0:03:19 > 0:03:23It's just plain, boring, dull everywhere.

0:03:23 > 0:03:25Nothing looks right.

0:03:25 > 0:03:28So why has it taken so long to do anything about it?

0:03:28 > 0:03:31My parents have got their views, Khansa's got some ideas,

0:03:31 > 0:03:34I've got ideas and so when you're trying to put everything

0:03:34 > 0:03:37into the mix, it doesn't necessarily come out with an easy answer.

0:03:37 > 0:03:41We just can't move forward. Everybody's ideas are so different.

0:03:43 > 0:03:47And it's chartered accountant Sherjeel's design ideas

0:03:47 > 0:03:50that really don't add up for the rest of the family.

0:03:50 > 0:03:52I like the idea of having a partition with a TV

0:03:52 > 0:03:54that you could swivel round.

0:03:54 > 0:03:57I've always had this idea of having dynamic lighting in some way

0:03:57 > 0:04:00that you could control it with a smartphone or something like that.

0:04:00 > 0:04:03I'd love to have like an elevated stage towards the windows

0:04:03 > 0:04:06and bifold windows that would open out into the garden.

0:04:06 > 0:04:09- What do you think of that, Mum? - No.

0:04:09 > 0:04:10No.

0:04:10 > 0:04:15I don't like his wild ideas because we have to live as a family.

0:04:15 > 0:04:18One person likes this and the others don't.

0:04:18 > 0:04:22Not too much stuff in the house, you know, there should be space.

0:04:22 > 0:04:27We have to come to a decision in between somewhere.

0:04:27 > 0:04:29I'm with you there, Mum.

0:04:29 > 0:04:31I'd love my house to look like a complete unique one-off,

0:04:31 > 0:04:34and I just think that life's about taking risks and, you know,

0:04:34 > 0:04:36they say fortune favours the brave

0:04:36 > 0:04:38and I think we're being very brave here.

0:06:14 > 0:06:17So I think these amateurs are going to have their work

0:06:19 > 0:06:22In total, three rooms will be transformed in the Ahmeds' home,

0:06:22 > 0:06:25but up till now, they've had no idea who's taking them on.

0:06:27 > 0:06:30First I've chosen 53-year-old Emily,

0:06:30 > 0:06:34a jewellery designer from London who doesn't mince her words.

0:06:36 > 0:06:40My design style, I would say, would be vintage industrial.

0:06:42 > 0:06:45I love concrete, I love metals, I love bricks,

0:06:45 > 0:06:48I love lovely fabrics and I love wrought iron.

0:06:49 > 0:06:52I love modern clean lines, jumbled with old desks

0:06:52 > 0:06:55and medical cabinets filled with junk.

0:06:56 > 0:07:00My friends describe my style as bold, unique and quite masculine.

0:07:03 > 0:07:05From me, you'll be getting 20 shades of grey.

0:08:36 > 0:08:40in a dark and mysterious river in Papua New Guinea.

0:08:41 > 0:08:47My approach to life and design is...just do it.

0:08:52 > 0:08:58I did really like. I mean, OK, maybe not so much wood in the house

0:08:58 > 0:09:01and the tree trunks, but she has some really good style in there.

0:09:21 > 0:09:25but this is the first time they've clapped eyes on the actual rooms.

0:09:29 > 0:09:33Emily will be redesigning the Ahmeds' retro kitchen.

0:10:21 > 0:10:25And she just wants something more up to date, maybe a bit cosier

0:10:25 > 0:10:30and I think the room also needs a bit of space for them to eat,

0:10:30 > 0:10:32you know, because they feed the children in there,

0:10:32 > 0:10:35but I'm not quite sure how at the moment, how that works.

0:11:25 > 0:11:29So I've sent in builder Nathan to bring the amateurs' vision to life.

0:11:33 > 0:11:36to make way for Emily's grand designs.

0:11:36 > 0:11:38The vision I have for this room would be like a vintage

0:11:38 > 0:11:41industrial urban feel to it.

0:11:43 > 0:11:48integrated with stainless steel worktops and actual mesh.

0:12:12 > 0:12:16but I'm really trying to bring in an Islamic kind of spiritual element.
