0:00:02 > 0:00:05Would you hand over your front door keys to complete strangers?
0:00:05 > 0:00:06I can't believe what we've done.
0:00:06 > 0:00:08Coo-ee!
0:00:08 > 0:00:10In exchange for a massive makeover?
0:00:10 > 0:00:12Red sky at night.
0:00:12 > 0:00:14I'm not sure I would.
0:00:14 > 0:00:17Different people have different tastes.
0:00:17 > 0:00:21I'm Celia Sawyer and I've been an interior designer for a decade.
0:00:21 > 0:00:24In this series, I'll be introducing families
0:00:24 > 0:00:26at the end of their decorating tether...
0:00:26 > 0:00:30We just can't move forward. Everybody's ideas are so different.
0:00:30 > 0:00:32..to interior designers who are desperate to help.
0:00:32 > 0:00:34Yes!
0:00:34 > 0:00:35The plug for the light.
0:00:35 > 0:00:38But these designers are not professionals.
0:00:38 > 0:00:40Let's just hope they like space films, eh?
0:00:40 > 0:00:42In fact, they're complete amateurs.
0:00:42 > 0:00:43They've wrecked that room.
0:00:43 > 0:00:45That is different.
0:00:45 > 0:00:46What have we done?
0:00:46 > 0:00:48They may have passion.
0:00:48 > 0:00:49I know about composition, dude.
0:00:49 > 0:00:51They might even have vision.
0:00:51 > 0:00:54I like to create a temple of hope.
0:00:54 > 0:00:56And lovely colours, lovely colours, lovely colours.
0:00:56 > 0:00:59But I'm giving them just five days to do the job.
0:00:59 > 0:01:00You beauty.
0:01:00 > 0:01:03My question is, will it be tears of joy...
0:01:03 > 0:01:05- Wow.- Look at this.
0:01:05 > 0:01:07Couldn't wish for anything better.
0:01:07 > 0:01:08..or just plain tears?
0:01:08 > 0:01:10I'm regretting it.
0:01:10 > 0:01:11He's going to hate it.
0:01:14 > 0:01:16You need to be as hard as nails
0:01:16 > 0:01:19to become a professional interior designer.
0:01:19 > 0:01:22My career took off when I restyled my own home.
0:01:22 > 0:01:26People who saw it loved it and started asking me
0:01:26 > 0:01:28to do up their homes too.
0:01:28 > 0:01:30Now I design for the rich and famous,
0:01:30 > 0:01:34high-end clients who can spend millions on their homes.
0:01:34 > 0:01:38It's always a big responsibility to have someone's home in your hands,
0:01:38 > 0:01:41even as a professional interior designer, so I'm really hoping
0:01:41 > 0:01:45these amateur designers can pull it off and take the pressure.
0:01:45 > 0:01:49In this series I'll be introducing fledging interior designers
0:01:49 > 0:01:50to my world.
0:01:50 > 0:01:52I've had a passion for interior design
0:01:52 > 0:01:54ever since I was seven years old.
0:01:54 > 0:01:56As each of them has only ever done up their own home,
0:01:56 > 0:01:59they're at the same point I was when I launched my career.
0:01:59 > 0:02:02I've never had the opportunity to unleash my creativity
0:02:02 > 0:02:04on someone's home before.
0:02:04 > 0:02:08I'm giving them the chance to set their creative juices free.
0:02:08 > 0:02:11To help families who are so stuck in design dead ends,
0:02:11 > 0:02:14they're prepared to try anything.
0:02:14 > 0:02:18It's a huge risk, as the home owners won't even meet the amateurs
0:02:18 > 0:02:19until it's all finished.
0:02:24 > 0:02:28Tonight I'm heading to south-east England to meet two families
0:02:28 > 0:02:31with several generations living under one roof.
0:02:31 > 0:02:33With so many people to please,
0:02:33 > 0:02:36I suspect it's going to be a tricky week.
0:02:39 > 0:02:41First up, Ilford in Essex,
0:02:41 > 0:02:43home to the Ahmed family.
0:02:43 > 0:02:45Sherjeel and Khansa,
0:02:45 > 0:02:48his parents Masood and Jalis,
0:02:48 > 0:02:50and little Raees and Imani,
0:02:50 > 0:02:53three generations living in just one house.
0:02:53 > 0:02:55Come from a Pakistani background and culture
0:02:55 > 0:02:58and within our culture it's commonplace for the eldest son
0:02:58 > 0:03:01to look after the parents when they become older.
0:03:01 > 0:03:05He comes home, he looks after the kids, looks after his wife and us,
0:03:05 > 0:03:07and I'm really proud of him.
0:03:08 > 0:03:12Two years ago, the Ahmeds bought a home big enough
0:03:12 > 0:03:13for the whole family.
0:03:13 > 0:03:17But the dreary decor left a lot to be desired.
0:03:17 > 0:03:19When you walk in, it feels incredibly faded and drab.
0:03:19 > 0:03:23It's just plain, boring, dull everywhere.
0:03:23 > 0:03:25Nothing looks right.
0:03:25 > 0:03:28So why has it taken so long to do anything about it?
0:03:28 > 0:03:31My parents have got their views, Khansa's got some ideas,
0:03:31 > 0:03:34I've got ideas and so when you're trying to put everything
0:03:34 > 0:03:37into the mix, it doesn't necessarily come out with an easy answer.
0:03:37 > 0:03:41We just can't move forward. Everybody's ideas are so different.
0:03:43 > 0:03:47And it's chartered accountant Sherjeel's design ideas
0:03:47 > 0:03:50that really don't add up for the rest of the family.
0:03:50 > 0:03:52I like the idea of having a partition with a TV
0:03:52 > 0:03:54that you could swivel round.
0:03:54 > 0:03:57I've always had this idea of having dynamic lighting in some way
0:03:57 > 0:04:00that you could control it with a smartphone or something like that.
0:04:00 > 0:04:03I'd love to have like an elevated stage towards the windows
0:04:03 > 0:04:06and bifold windows that would open out into the garden.
0:04:06 > 0:04:09- What do you think of that, Mum? - No.
0:04:09 > 0:04:10No.
0:04:10 > 0:04:15I don't like his wild ideas because we have to live as a family.
0:04:15 > 0:04:18One person likes this and the others don't.
0:04:18 > 0:04:22Not too much stuff in the house, you know, there should be space.
0:04:22 > 0:04:27We have to come to a decision in between somewhere.
0:04:27 > 0:04:29I'm with you there, Mum.
0:04:29 > 0:04:31I'd love my house to look like a complete unique one-off,
0:04:31 > 0:04:34and I just think that life's about taking risks and, you know,
0:04:34 > 0:04:36they say fortune favours the brave
0:04:36 > 0:04:38and I think we're being very brave here.
0:04:38 > 0:04:42I think we're all being very brave taking this job on.
0:04:43 > 0:04:46First I need to see the problem for myself, as I'll be briefing
0:04:46 > 0:04:49the two amateurs redesigning the Ahmeds' home.
0:04:49 > 0:04:51Hi. You must be Sherjeel.
0:04:51 > 0:04:53Hi, please come in, welcome.
0:04:53 > 0:04:56- Thank you. - And so this is our lovely kitchen.
0:04:56 > 0:04:59Our lovely dated kitchen.
0:04:59 > 0:05:01I can tell you really like it.
0:05:01 > 0:05:02I love it.
0:05:02 > 0:05:06It's just very old and the kids generally eat here as well.
0:05:06 > 0:05:07Like a quick snack.
0:05:07 > 0:05:09Where do they eat? They sit on here?
0:05:09 > 0:05:13Yeah, well, they have a little table. That's not really practical.
0:05:13 > 0:05:15OK, show me the next room, please.
0:05:17 > 0:05:20So this is the dining room.
0:05:22 > 0:05:25This is where we spend our time together as a family.
0:05:25 > 0:05:27We don't want a bog-standard dining room.
0:05:27 > 0:05:30I think that's the one definite thing that we can agree on.
0:05:30 > 0:05:32Off you go.
0:05:32 > 0:05:34This is our living room.
0:05:34 > 0:05:37It doesn't feel like it's got a lot of soul at the moment.
0:05:37 > 0:05:40Sort of lacking in... Lacking personality.
0:05:40 > 0:05:43Yeah, that's it, personality and character, it's got none of that.
0:05:43 > 0:05:46I like somewhere where it's fun and practical but it's also cosy.
0:05:46 > 0:05:48I'd love this to be a house that isn't an ordinary house.
0:05:48 > 0:05:52I'd like people to come here and have a real wow factor about it.
0:05:53 > 0:05:55Time to hand over your keys.
0:05:55 > 0:05:58You're going to come back in a few days. Off you go.
0:05:58 > 0:06:01The now very worried Ahmeds will be back in two days
0:06:01 > 0:06:03to see the first two rooms.
0:06:04 > 0:06:05Bye-bye, house.
0:06:05 > 0:06:07Take care.
0:06:07 > 0:06:10We've got three generations under one roof here
0:06:10 > 0:06:13and from my experience as a professional designer,
0:06:13 > 0:06:14that's always a tough one.
0:06:14 > 0:06:17So I think these amateurs are going to have their work
0:06:17 > 0:06:19cut out for them big time.
0:06:19 > 0:06:22In total, three rooms will be transformed in the Ahmeds' home,
0:06:22 > 0:06:25but up till now, they've had no idea who's taking them on.
0:06:27 > 0:06:30First I've chosen 53-year-old Emily,
0:06:30 > 0:06:34a jewellery designer from London who doesn't mince her words.
0:06:36 > 0:06:40My design style, I would say, would be vintage industrial.
0:06:40 > 0:06:42Oh, no!
0:06:42 > 0:06:45I love concrete, I love metals, I love bricks,
0:06:45 > 0:06:48I love lovely fabrics and I love wrought iron.
0:06:49 > 0:06:52I love modern clean lines, jumbled with old desks
0:06:52 > 0:06:55and medical cabinets filled with junk.
0:06:56 > 0:07:00My friends describe my style as bold, unique and quite masculine.
0:07:03 > 0:07:05From me, you'll be getting 20 shades of grey.
0:07:05 > 0:07:08And grey and more grey.
0:07:10 > 0:07:11You are lucky to have me.
0:07:11 > 0:07:15You'll get a complete new modern look, whether you like it or not.
0:07:15 > 0:07:17I won't be holding back, I will stick to my design style.
0:07:17 > 0:07:19I wouldn't go middle of the road,
0:07:19 > 0:07:21otherwise there's no point me being there.
0:07:23 > 0:07:27- I don't like it.- I loved it. I thought she was amazing.
0:07:27 > 0:07:28It's far too grey for me.
0:07:28 > 0:07:31I don't think it's practical for our family.
0:07:31 > 0:07:34I've just realised, my parents, what will they think?
0:07:34 > 0:07:37Your poor parents, they're not going to be happy.
0:07:40 > 0:07:43Next, to counterbalance Emily's industrial feel
0:07:43 > 0:07:47is 55-year-old yoga instructor Pandora.
0:07:47 > 0:07:51I adore wood. I'm surrounded by it.
0:07:51 > 0:07:55I live with it and I love to use it in my designs.
0:07:56 > 0:07:59Who else would hang tree stumps from the ceiling?
0:08:02 > 0:08:04I love wood because it's living.
0:08:04 > 0:08:08It's breathing, it's evolving, every single piece is unique.
0:08:12 > 0:08:15What's really transformed my creative process
0:08:15 > 0:08:17is my meditation practice.
0:08:18 > 0:08:21My work is really about transcending the mundane.
0:08:21 > 0:08:24I like to create a temple of hope for humanity.
0:08:26 > 0:08:30I draw inspiration from all of the places that I've travelled.
0:08:30 > 0:08:34I've lived in a cave in India, drunk tea with the Dalai Lama,
0:08:34 > 0:08:36been in a dugout canoe with some warriors
0:08:36 > 0:08:40in a dark and mysterious river in Papua New Guinea.
0:08:41 > 0:08:47My approach to life and design is...just do it.
0:08:48 > 0:08:51- I really liked that. - Did you?!
0:08:52 > 0:08:58I did really like. I mean, OK, maybe not so much wood in the house
0:08:58 > 0:09:01and the tree trunks, but she has some really good style in there.
0:09:01 > 0:09:04It's a fire hazard, the amount of wood there is.
0:09:04 > 0:09:07Did you see that shelving and see the little lamps,
0:09:07 > 0:09:09ah, that's exactly what I want.
0:09:09 > 0:09:11- Ah no, no. - I like this one.
0:09:11 > 0:09:14Wouldn't you know it? It's a design taste-off.
0:09:14 > 0:09:17Industrial concrete versus a natural vibe.
0:09:18 > 0:09:21Each budding designer has seen a floor plan in advance,
0:09:21 > 0:09:25but this is the first time they've clapped eyes on the actual rooms.
0:09:27 > 0:09:29Wow. This takes me back.
0:09:29 > 0:09:33Emily will be redesigning the Ahmeds' retro kitchen.
0:09:34 > 0:09:38Well, there's quite a lot of space to work with, potential.
0:09:38 > 0:09:42While Pandora will be unleashing her vision on the dining room.
0:09:42 > 0:09:45It's a nice room, it's got a nice vibe to it.
0:09:45 > 0:09:48And the strip lighting has to go. That's not very friendly.
0:09:48 > 0:09:51I'm going to give it definition and style, so when you walk
0:09:51 > 0:09:54through this door, you're really going to feel something.
0:09:54 > 0:09:57Looking forward to the challenge, but everything has to go
0:09:57 > 0:09:59and that includes the kitchen sink.
0:09:59 > 0:10:03The novice designers have had a little information on the family
0:10:03 > 0:10:04and their design deadlock.
0:10:04 > 0:10:07Now I've got to make sure they've understood the brief.
0:10:07 > 0:10:10Hi, Pandora. Meet Emily.
0:10:10 > 0:10:12Hi, Emily, how you doing? Nice to meet you.
0:10:12 > 0:10:14Nice to meet you too.
0:10:14 > 0:10:17Right, ladies, how's your first impressions of your rooms?
0:10:17 > 0:10:21Ah. Bland, boring and a throwback to the '70s.
0:10:21 > 0:10:25And she just wants something more up to date, maybe a bit cosier
0:10:25 > 0:10:30and I think the room also needs a bit of space for them to eat,
0:10:30 > 0:10:32you know, because they feed the children in there,
0:10:32 > 0:10:35but I'm not quite sure how at the moment, how that works.
0:10:35 > 0:10:38- I don't know either. - You've got £7,000 to spend in there.
0:10:38 > 0:10:40- Fabulous. - Oh, lucky you.
0:10:40 > 0:10:43Pandora, you've got £3,500 for the dining room.
0:10:43 > 0:10:46- I think that's quite a good budget. - I don't think so.
0:10:46 > 0:10:47- You don't? - No. I'd like more.
0:10:47 > 0:10:50- You've got to be creative with it. - Yeah, of course, I will be.
0:10:50 > 0:10:53It's got to be a great space for all of them.
0:10:53 > 0:10:56Mum, Dad, Sherjeel, Khansa.
0:10:56 > 0:10:59Yeah, totally, yeah. I have designed it with that in mind
0:10:59 > 0:11:01and hopefully you'll walk into that room
0:11:01 > 0:11:05and you'll be struck by the beauty of it and the simplicity of it.
0:11:05 > 0:11:08One thing they have agreed on is that they want a house
0:11:08 > 0:11:11that's not just an ordinary run-of-the-mill type of house,
0:11:11 > 0:11:14so it's got to have something going on it,
0:11:14 > 0:11:17it's got to have some personality, and good luck.
0:11:17 > 0:11:19Looking forward to it.
0:11:19 > 0:11:22A full refurb on a kitchen is a tough task for an amateur designer.
0:11:25 > 0:11:29So I've sent in builder Nathan to bring the amateurs' vision to life.
0:11:29 > 0:11:33His first job is ripping out the '70s kitchen
0:11:33 > 0:11:36to make way for Emily's grand designs.
0:11:36 > 0:11:38The vision I have for this room would be like a vintage
0:11:38 > 0:11:41industrial urban feel to it.
0:11:41 > 0:11:43Grey, shiny, glossy, slick cabinets
0:11:43 > 0:11:48integrated with stainless steel worktops and actual mesh.
0:11:48 > 0:11:51What's not to like about metal? I love it.
0:11:52 > 0:11:54We'll see about that.
0:11:54 > 0:11:57In the dining room, friend of the forest Pandora
0:11:57 > 0:11:59is going for a very different vibe.
0:11:59 > 0:12:03My vision for the room is to do Moroccan simple plasterwork,
0:12:03 > 0:12:08combined with the very textural, rustic, beautiful oak.
0:12:08 > 0:12:12The idea is to have quite a primitive feel,
0:12:12 > 0:12:16but I'm really trying to bring in an Islamic kind of spiritual element.
0:12:17 > 0:12:21Later in the week, these two will have to blend their opposing styles
0:12:21 > 0:12:24and work together in the Ahmeds' living room.
0:12:24 > 0:12:25How's that going to work?
0:12:30 > 0:12:33In Bexleyheath, south-east London,
0:12:33 > 0:12:36lives another family stuck in a rut over renovations.
0:12:37 > 0:12:39The Powers.
0:12:39 > 0:12:42Trainee cabbie Nev, wife Traci
0:12:42 > 0:12:44and Traci's 79-year-old mum, Lily.
0:12:44 > 0:12:48On the whole, no, we get on OK, don't we?
0:12:48 > 0:12:51I mean you can't be absolutely perfect. He's the trouble.
0:12:53 > 0:12:57And once again, we have a man with slightly worrying taste.
0:12:57 > 0:13:00I do like sparkly and glittery things.
0:13:00 > 0:13:03I'd like to put a glitterball in the corner. I'd be happy with that.
0:13:05 > 0:13:06No way.
0:13:07 > 0:13:09And Lily's opinion is key.
0:13:09 > 0:13:13She and her late husband bought the house way back in 1958.
0:13:13 > 0:13:18We were looking around and we saw this and immediately said yes.
0:13:19 > 0:13:20There's Dad, Mum.
0:13:20 > 0:13:22It had a homely feel about it.
0:13:22 > 0:13:23Oh, look at you.
0:13:23 > 0:13:27How sweet was I? I've still got the teddy bear.
0:13:27 > 0:13:29Lots of memories. I was born in this house,
0:13:29 > 0:13:32so was my sister, in the very bedroom that my mum still sleeps in.
0:13:33 > 0:13:35We could sell that room to a museum.
0:13:39 > 0:13:43Two years ago, Nev and Traci bought the house from Lily.
0:13:43 > 0:13:45They're now keen to make it their own.
0:13:45 > 0:13:47We'd like to put our stamp on the house
0:13:47 > 0:13:51but we always run everything past Lily first to get her approval.
0:13:51 > 0:13:55But it's not just Lily's approval that's holding them back.
0:13:55 > 0:13:59Creative differences have put all renovations firmly on hold.
0:13:59 > 0:14:03I really don't think I can go through another year
0:14:03 > 0:14:05of living in a building site.
0:14:07 > 0:14:10I don't mind someone else coming in and doing a bit,
0:14:10 > 0:14:14but I hope they haven't got the same taste as Neville.
0:14:14 > 0:14:16This house has been in the family 56 years,
0:14:16 > 0:14:21so it is a big risk but one I think is worth taking.
0:14:23 > 0:14:25This home is crying out for help.
0:14:28 > 0:14:31It would be a big job even for a professional designer.
0:14:32 > 0:14:35You don't mind living like this?
0:14:35 > 0:14:36Yes.
0:14:36 > 0:14:39We've got nowhere to sit and watch TV.
0:14:39 > 0:14:42Nowhere to relax, nowhere to invite friends.
0:14:42 > 0:14:45If you could have anything you wanted, what would you have?
0:14:45 > 0:14:49I would like a glitter ball but you know, apparently it's not practical.
0:14:49 > 0:14:51Any major hates?
0:14:51 > 0:14:53I don't like dark, dark wood.
0:14:53 > 0:14:56I think you ought to show me the rest of the house.
0:14:56 > 0:14:59- Right, OK, you ready? - Yes.
0:14:59 > 0:15:03So this is what we used to call the front room, but the lounge.
0:15:03 > 0:15:06Where do you sit down and relax?
0:15:08 > 0:15:10- Well, we don't. - No, not in here.
0:15:10 > 0:15:12At least it's a blank canvas.
0:15:12 > 0:15:15Well, that's for sure. Crikey.
0:15:16 > 0:15:18This is Lily's room.
0:15:18 > 0:15:21It does look like a blast from the past.
0:15:21 > 0:15:26Yeah. It was last decorated 30 years ago.
0:15:27 > 0:15:30This is the one I'm most nervous about.
0:15:30 > 0:15:34OK, well, I think I've seen enough, so I think it's time to leave.
0:15:34 > 0:15:35OK.
0:15:36 > 0:15:40Time to hand over those keys. Come on.
0:15:43 > 0:15:46Cue two sleepless nights for Nev and Traci.
0:15:48 > 0:15:49They're being very brave.
0:15:50 > 0:15:53Oh, my God, what are we doing?
0:15:53 > 0:15:55I'm not sure they're going to be feeling much better
0:15:55 > 0:15:57when they find out who I'm sending in.
0:16:00 > 0:16:02First up is Sue Martini,
0:16:02 > 0:16:06a housewife from Birmingham who has an eye for the extravagant.
0:16:06 > 0:16:07Right, here we go, Nev.
0:16:07 > 0:16:10My style is sophisticated bling with a wow.
0:16:10 > 0:16:11Yes.
0:16:11 > 0:16:15Sometimes over the top, but always exciting.
0:16:15 > 0:16:19The style you'll get from me will be glamorous, elegant,
0:16:19 > 0:16:22and I can't wait to get a bit of bling sparkle
0:16:22 > 0:16:24and zhuzh into your home.
0:16:24 > 0:16:26See, I like that. It's plain, nice, classy.
0:16:26 > 0:16:28Yeah, it does look very classy.
0:16:28 > 0:16:32Yeah, but it's if we get someone that's a bit too out there.
0:16:32 > 0:16:35They could very well be describing our next designer,
0:16:35 > 0:16:3948-year-old Marina, who likes to dabble with the dark side.
0:16:39 > 0:16:43My design style is sexy, dramatic.
0:16:43 > 0:16:46Some people might think that black walls are a brave choice.
0:16:46 > 0:16:49I think it's a little bit more freeing.
0:16:49 > 0:16:51That looks really nice.
0:16:51 > 0:16:52It's too dark.
0:16:56 > 0:16:59I'd like to help somebody to go over to the dark side.
0:17:00 > 0:17:03What? I'm worried now.
0:17:03 > 0:17:05I think we should be worried.
0:17:05 > 0:17:07How worried?
0:17:07 > 0:17:10Very worried. I'm really worried now.
0:17:11 > 0:17:15I can see why. It's the battle of bling versus black.
0:17:15 > 0:17:18Marina will be getting her hands on the living room.
0:17:18 > 0:17:21Yeah, I reckon we could do quite a lot with this room
0:17:21 > 0:17:23and it doesn't need to be this light.
0:17:23 > 0:17:25Oh, wow.
0:17:25 > 0:17:30And Sue has the intimidating task of modernising Lily's bedroom.
0:17:30 > 0:17:33Oh, gosh, it looks like it hasn't been decorated in ages.
0:17:33 > 0:17:36We've definitely got a space issue in here, mostly I think
0:17:36 > 0:17:38because of these cupboards.
0:17:38 > 0:17:41Now the amateurs know what they're up against,
0:17:41 > 0:17:45I'm keen to remind them of the family's brief.
0:17:45 > 0:17:46Hi Sue, meet Marina.
0:17:46 > 0:17:47Hello.
0:17:47 > 0:17:49Hello, Sue. Nice to meet you.
0:17:49 > 0:17:53Marina, the brief in the living room is they want a comfortable room
0:17:53 > 0:17:57they can sit in, enjoy, relax and not too in your face.
0:17:57 > 0:18:01It's got to suit all three of them and you've got £3,000 to spend.
0:18:01 > 0:18:02Yes.
0:18:02 > 0:18:05Sue. You have Lily's room.
0:18:05 > 0:18:08You also have £3,000 to spend in there.
0:18:08 > 0:18:11It's got too much storage in it that she doesn't use.
0:18:11 > 0:18:13It needs to be something that she feels
0:18:13 > 0:18:16she can move around a little bit easier in.
0:18:16 > 0:18:18- Lovely, thank you. - Good luck.
0:18:18 > 0:18:20They're going to need it.
0:18:21 > 0:18:25As usual, I've asked builder Russell to be on hand to aid the amateurs
0:18:25 > 0:18:28with the nuts and bolts of their designs.
0:18:28 > 0:18:30Well, my vision for the room is Hollywood glam,
0:18:30 > 0:18:32so it's going to make it a lot more luxurious.
0:18:32 > 0:18:34I will bring in some gold for the glitz effect.
0:18:34 > 0:18:38There's no reason why when you get old you can't have glam in your life.
0:18:38 > 0:18:42Walls are going to be a very dark, darkest turquoise.
0:18:42 > 0:18:45There's going to be a lovely fire surround.
0:18:45 > 0:18:47There's going to be quirky bits.
0:18:47 > 0:18:49I like people to walk into a room and smile.
0:18:49 > 0:18:52Yes, so do I. No tears, please.
0:18:58 > 0:19:00It's day two at the Ahmeds' home.
0:19:02 > 0:19:06In the dining room, Pandora has made a rather worrying decision.
0:19:06 > 0:19:09The plan is that I'm building out from the wall.
0:19:09 > 0:19:11Which will make the room look smaller.
0:19:11 > 0:19:14So that we can fit alcoves in.
0:19:14 > 0:19:16I think the alcoves are the base of her room,
0:19:16 > 0:19:19so she had to bring the walls in to create the depth of the alcove.
0:19:19 > 0:19:22But I think it is just all going to close in a bit.
0:19:22 > 0:19:24It's a big room but it's a big family,
0:19:24 > 0:19:27so to bring it smaller, it's not the way I would have gone with it.
0:19:27 > 0:19:30Some people might like a cave in their house.
0:19:30 > 0:19:32So we'll have to wait and see if they do.
0:19:32 > 0:19:35So we've got a cave in the dining room
0:19:35 > 0:19:38and what looks like a fence in the kitchen.
0:19:38 > 0:19:43This is the mesh I'm intending to use to separate the wall units.
0:19:43 > 0:19:47I love working with any metals. It brings a certain urban element
0:19:47 > 0:19:51into the design, and complements slates and charcoals and greys
0:19:51 > 0:19:53and all the shades that I love.
0:19:54 > 0:19:59In the garden, it's less urban jungle, more enchanted forest.
0:19:59 > 0:20:01Surely, everybody loves wood.
0:20:01 > 0:20:06I spent my whole childhood, quite a feral childhood, me and my sister
0:20:06 > 0:20:11and my brother were just allowed to run wild and we made amazing camps
0:20:11 > 0:20:14and where you could plait wood, we'd make things with dandelions hanging,
0:20:14 > 0:20:17we used lawn mowings to make beautiful carpets,
0:20:17 > 0:20:21and I guess that's where I've got my love of wood
0:20:21 > 0:20:23and my love of natural materials.
0:20:28 > 0:20:30Just five minutes down the road,
0:20:30 > 0:20:33Sherjeel has called a family meeting.
0:20:34 > 0:20:38It's time to tell his parents he thinks they've all made a mistake.
0:20:39 > 0:20:43Emily likes concrete, she likes metals,
0:20:43 > 0:20:46her style is industrial vintage.
0:20:46 > 0:20:49Her worktops in her kitchen were concrete.
0:20:49 > 0:20:51- It's not practical for the kids. - Yeah.
0:20:51 > 0:20:55But she had like a real fascination, I suppose, with the colour grey.
0:20:55 > 0:20:57Sounds like Pakistan.
0:20:57 > 0:20:58Sounds like Pakistan!
0:21:01 > 0:21:03Is that a good or a bad thing?
0:21:03 > 0:21:07It doesn't appeal to me. It sounds boring.
0:21:08 > 0:21:10Oh, no!
0:21:13 > 0:21:17It's to be mesh at the back and a mesh dividing shelves.
0:21:17 > 0:21:20- Do you want the back meshed on the sides?- Yes, please.
0:21:20 > 0:21:24I do worry a little bit about whether or not you will be able
0:21:24 > 0:21:28to warm to her style, cos it is quite unique.
0:21:29 > 0:21:32The second designer's name is Pandora.
0:21:32 > 0:21:34She really likes wood,
0:21:34 > 0:21:38so in her house everything was made out of wood.
0:21:38 > 0:21:41She had tree trunks dangling from the ceiling,
0:21:41 > 0:21:44she had seats made out of wood.
0:21:44 > 0:21:46She had features on the wall carved out of wood.
0:21:46 > 0:21:48I did really like Pandora
0:21:48 > 0:21:51but I just think that there was just far too much wood in the house.
0:21:51 > 0:21:54I think she just put wood everywhere.
0:21:54 > 0:21:56I think that I wouldn't like it.
0:21:56 > 0:21:58What a surprise.
0:21:58 > 0:22:01Basically, I love trees.
0:22:01 > 0:22:06I quite often stop my car and pick things up when I find them
0:22:06 > 0:22:08and this was one little episode
0:22:08 > 0:22:12and this piece of birch is going to be hanging over the dining table.
0:22:14 > 0:22:16She's a very extreme designer
0:22:16 > 0:22:18but I would say that the opposite of Emily.
0:22:18 > 0:22:21Isn't there anything in between? We could get together.
0:22:21 > 0:22:25- No.- Are these two people going to go ahead with this?
0:22:25 > 0:22:28- They're doing it now. - Both?
0:22:28 > 0:22:30- They're in the house now making it. - Both of them?
0:22:30 > 0:22:31Both of them, yes.
0:22:31 > 0:22:34You think you made a mistake letting them in the house?
0:22:34 > 0:22:37I'm a little bit worried myself this morning, after having thought about it.
0:22:37 > 0:22:39I am concerned.
0:22:39 > 0:22:40I don't blame you.
0:22:44 > 0:22:46Wow. That's different.
0:22:48 > 0:22:52Even Emily's getting a bit concerned.
0:22:52 > 0:22:54Not something I do.
0:22:54 > 0:22:57Clearly, Pandora likes the natural elements.
0:22:59 > 0:23:02It's becoming crystal clear that moving on to the joint room
0:23:02 > 0:23:05may take this challenge to a new dimension.
0:23:05 > 0:23:09If this is more what's to come,
0:23:09 > 0:23:15then we are going to have to work quite hard to collaborate, I think.
0:23:18 > 0:23:21In Bexleyheath at the Powers',
0:23:21 > 0:23:25budding interior designer Sue has turned into an archaeologist...
0:23:25 > 0:23:28Leicester Square. That's interesting.
0:23:28 > 0:23:31..digging out treasure from under Lily's floor.
0:23:33 > 0:23:36We found this old newspaper, look at this.
0:23:36 > 0:23:39A Star is Born, theatre.
0:23:39 > 0:23:431937. They kind of come into my Hollywood glam theme.
0:23:43 > 0:23:46I may be able to incorporate this in a frame.
0:23:46 > 0:23:49Don't know yet. I'm thinking along those lines.
0:23:49 > 0:23:53It just really hits home how long Lily has been in this room, actually,
0:23:53 > 0:23:54and in this house.
0:23:55 > 0:23:58Unaware of the history being excavated in their home,
0:23:58 > 0:24:03Nev and Traci are telling their Uncle Buster about their concerns.
0:24:03 > 0:24:05So are you worried or not?
0:24:05 > 0:24:07I'm so worried about Mum's room.
0:24:07 > 0:24:10Whatever designer does that has got to get it right.
0:24:10 > 0:24:15She deserves nice because she's had a hard life in lots of ways.
0:24:15 > 0:24:21She lost your dad and after that she still carried on
0:24:21 > 0:24:24doing her bit for all the family.
0:24:25 > 0:24:28- Here she is. - You all right, Mum?
0:24:28 > 0:24:29Sit yourself down.
0:24:29 > 0:24:30Come on, darling.
0:24:30 > 0:24:33So, Mum, we've just been talking about the designers and that.
0:24:33 > 0:24:35- How you feeling about it, you nervous?- Yeah.
0:24:35 > 0:24:37About what bit, particularly?
0:24:37 > 0:24:39Mine, really.
0:24:39 > 0:24:40She don't care about the rest.
0:24:40 > 0:24:42Oh, thanks.
0:24:43 > 0:24:45No bright colours.
0:24:45 > 0:24:47But what happens if they do?
0:24:47 > 0:24:50They'll have to come and do it again then, won't they?
0:24:51 > 0:24:55Oh, dear. Sue's in full swing with operation bling.
0:24:56 > 0:24:58Adding gold gives you that bit of the wow factor
0:24:58 > 0:25:01which is a bit of a signature thing for me.
0:25:01 > 0:25:02It adds a bit of glamour.
0:25:03 > 0:25:06But it's Marina's choice of dark colours
0:25:06 > 0:25:08that's giving me the biggest headache.
0:25:08 > 0:25:12I hope she doesn't do any of the house like she's done her own.
0:25:12 > 0:25:14All the walls are painted black.
0:25:14 > 0:25:17There could have been a flash of lightning and she could have gone,
0:25:17 > 0:25:19"Don't worry, your house is safe in our hands."
0:25:19 > 0:25:21EVIL LAUGH
0:25:21 > 0:25:23I don't want to be welcomed to the dark side.
0:25:23 > 0:25:25I'm frightened.
0:25:29 > 0:25:33Well, good luck to all and sundry and I hope everything goes well.
0:25:33 > 0:25:35Thank you very much.
0:25:35 > 0:25:37Cheers.
0:25:38 > 0:25:42Well, it is all going well, if you like dark.
0:25:44 > 0:25:48Marina's dark carpet is even scaring builder Russell.
0:25:48 > 0:25:51I feel Marina's gone too dark with that colour in that room.
0:25:51 > 0:25:54There's not enough natural light coming in there.
0:25:54 > 0:25:55I can't see it working.
0:25:55 > 0:25:58I'm going to wait and see. I'm a firm believer in bold design,
0:25:58 > 0:26:01but Nev and Traci may take some convincing.
0:26:05 > 0:26:07It's day three in Ilford.
0:26:07 > 0:26:10The amateur designers have just a few hours
0:26:10 > 0:26:14until I return to cast my eye over their individual rooms.
0:26:14 > 0:26:18Gritty designer Emily is going metal mad in the kitchen.
0:26:20 > 0:26:24Whilst lumber-loving Pandora is branching out in the dining room.
0:26:24 > 0:26:29This is my vision and the journey was exactly how I planned it.
0:26:29 > 0:26:31I've tried my best.
0:26:31 > 0:26:34I would be really gutted if they don't like it.
0:26:34 > 0:26:36I totally love this room.
0:26:36 > 0:26:39I've given it 100% and I would have this kitchen in my own house,
0:26:39 > 0:26:42and I can't really say more than that.
0:26:42 > 0:26:45Two designers, two opposing styles.
0:26:45 > 0:26:49Collaboration on the joint room is going to be interesting.
0:26:52 > 0:26:56But first it's time to see how they fared on their individual designs.
0:27:00 > 0:27:03For £7,000, Emily waved goodbye to the '70s kitchen.
0:27:05 > 0:27:07And said hello to modern metal.
0:27:08 > 0:27:12The old yellow units were replaced with her trademark grey
0:27:12 > 0:27:18and the retro tiles have made way for modern metallic-look wallpaper.
0:27:18 > 0:27:21But is this contemporary look right for the Ahmeds?
0:27:30 > 0:27:32Very good. I like it.
0:27:34 > 0:27:37It's modern, I like the colour,
0:27:37 > 0:27:40I like the fact that we now have a proper place
0:27:40 > 0:27:43for the children to sit and have breakfast.
0:27:43 > 0:27:45I like the floor.
0:27:45 > 0:27:49I really don't think that they will find this offensive.
0:27:49 > 0:27:51But obviously you never know.
0:27:54 > 0:27:58In the dining room, Pandora had £3,500 to create
0:27:58 > 0:28:01an otherworldly experience.
0:28:01 > 0:28:05Bland walls have been replaced by Moroccan-style plasterwork.
0:28:06 > 0:28:11And her carved furniture and accessories fill the room.
0:28:12 > 0:28:15I need to check the impact of Pandora's decision
0:28:15 > 0:28:16to bring in the walls.
0:28:23 > 0:28:26This room feels smaller. That's for sure.
0:28:29 > 0:28:35And if Sherjeel wants something that perhaps is very different,
0:28:35 > 0:28:38then maybe this is it.
0:28:38 > 0:28:40There's so much wood.
0:28:40 > 0:28:43Wooden floor, wooden table, wooden chairs, wooden light.
0:28:43 > 0:28:45Wood in the walls.
0:28:45 > 0:28:48I mean, we have gone a bit wood-mad in here.
0:28:49 > 0:28:53Chairs are interest... Oh, goodness me. Crikey!
0:28:53 > 0:28:55You've got small children in the house
0:28:55 > 0:28:58and you've got older people as well.
0:28:59 > 0:29:02They absolutely weigh a tonne.
0:29:04 > 0:29:06But what will they think?
0:29:08 > 0:29:09Welcome back. Hello.
0:29:09 > 0:29:12And nice to meet Mum and Dad at last.
0:29:12 > 0:29:13You're looking very calm.
0:29:13 > 0:29:15Not for long.
0:29:15 > 0:29:16Not for long!
0:29:16 > 0:29:19Would you like to lead the way, as it's your home?
0:29:21 > 0:29:24First up is Emily's industrial kitchen.
0:29:26 > 0:29:27Oh, my goodness.
0:29:38 > 0:29:41I like it. Do you like it?
0:29:41 > 0:29:43I was going to say, "Phew!"
0:29:44 > 0:29:46You do like it?
0:29:46 > 0:29:48Yeah, I do like it, actually! I really like it!
0:29:48 > 0:29:51- Emily. - Yes.
0:29:51 > 0:29:53See, I always had faith.
0:29:53 > 0:29:54Mum and Dad like it?
0:29:54 > 0:29:57Yes, I like it. Very much, very much, very much.
0:29:57 > 0:29:59I don't believe it's the same kitchen.
0:29:59 > 0:30:02- It's lovely.- There's an area here now where the children can sit
0:30:02 > 0:30:04and have their food.
0:30:04 > 0:30:06That's very good. This is really good.
0:30:06 > 0:30:10I was really concerned by it, but now I think I just want to hug her.
0:30:10 > 0:30:11Oh, that's nice.
0:30:11 > 0:30:12Yeah, I'm really happy with it.
0:30:12 > 0:30:15She raised the bar, a metal bar,
0:30:15 > 0:30:18and it's going to be difficult for Pandora, I think,
0:30:18 > 0:30:21but I look forward to seeing what she's come up with.
0:30:21 > 0:30:23Shall we go and find out?
0:30:23 > 0:30:25OK, lead the way.
0:30:28 > 0:30:29Thank you.
0:30:31 > 0:30:34Oh, my goodness.
0:30:44 > 0:30:46Bit speechless.
0:30:48 > 0:30:51I don't know what to say about this one.
0:30:51 > 0:30:54I don't know if I like it or I don't like it.
0:30:54 > 0:30:57The room is smaller, it's a little more small.
0:30:57 > 0:30:59- It looks smaller. - Smaller, yes.
0:30:59 > 0:31:02You've obviously lost a bit of space with this being built out.
0:31:02 > 0:31:05But what's really bugging me is the walls.
0:31:05 > 0:31:07I really like that light being there, I like this.
0:31:07 > 0:31:10I think the walls to me look unfinished.
0:31:10 > 0:31:13I really like the roughness of the walls. It feels like...
0:31:13 > 0:31:16The roughness of the walls is OK but...these.
0:31:16 > 0:31:19- You don't like it? - No.
0:31:20 > 0:31:24I don't know how practical it is with kids.
0:31:24 > 0:31:27Yeah, there are sharp edges and things poking out
0:31:27 > 0:31:30that will worry me slightly about this.
0:31:30 > 0:31:33If they were a little bit older, sensible, then it is different.
0:31:33 > 0:31:35I think a lot of things will worry me
0:31:35 > 0:31:36about this room with the children.
0:31:36 > 0:31:39The curtains being one, even though I like them a lot.
0:31:39 > 0:31:42That's a big thing for me, though, that it needs to be safe for them.
0:31:42 > 0:31:46What I really wanted was something completely different.
0:31:46 > 0:31:49- You have that, for sure. - Yes, definitely, yeah.
0:31:49 > 0:31:51Out of the two rooms, which is your preferred?
0:31:51 > 0:31:52- Kitchen.- Kitchen.
0:31:52 > 0:31:56- That was a very definite kitchen, wasn't it?- Yes.
0:31:56 > 0:31:59Both designers will be working together doing the joint room
0:31:59 > 0:32:01which is your living room.
0:32:01 > 0:32:03You have to be honest now and tell me
0:32:03 > 0:32:06if there's anything you might be slightly concerned about.
0:32:06 > 0:32:08It has to be safe.
0:32:09 > 0:32:12The main problem with a lot of designers is they go in
0:32:12 > 0:32:15and they do something that's aesthetically nice,
0:32:15 > 0:32:17but they actually don't think about practicalities
0:32:17 > 0:32:21and don't think about the people that are really living in the space,
0:32:21 > 0:32:24and that's exactly what Pandora's done in this room.
0:32:24 > 0:32:26She's not thought about the young children,
0:32:26 > 0:32:29because there's so many things in that room that could cause problems.
0:32:29 > 0:32:34Time for Pandora and Emily to get their first dose of client feedback.
0:32:34 > 0:32:37- Hi, Celia. - Hi.
0:32:37 > 0:32:39Hi, Celia.
0:32:39 > 0:32:40Hello. How you feeling?
0:32:40 > 0:32:42- Great. - Good.
0:32:42 > 0:32:44Emily, your wallpaper was interesting.
0:32:44 > 0:32:46Yes, I love it.
0:32:46 > 0:32:48Do you think that you've met the brief with the older
0:32:48 > 0:32:51members of the family?
0:32:51 > 0:32:52They're more traditional.
0:32:52 > 0:32:54I have no idea.
0:32:54 > 0:32:58My game plan was to literally stick with what I felt passionate with
0:32:58 > 0:33:02and hopefully they would too in the long run.
0:33:02 > 0:33:03They all loved it.
0:33:03 > 0:33:05Wonderful.
0:33:05 > 0:33:07Pandora. The dining room.
0:33:09 > 0:33:12Do you think that you met the brief?
0:33:13 > 0:33:14I hope so.
0:33:14 > 0:33:17Mum and Dad had a few reservations and so did Khansa.
0:33:17 > 0:33:19There were elements of the room
0:33:19 > 0:33:23that weren't child-friendly enough for them, they were worried about.
0:33:23 > 0:33:25- For example? - Well, they felt that...
0:33:25 > 0:33:29- Just out of interest.- For instance, there were sharp edges in places.
0:33:29 > 0:33:32You know, the chairs were very heavy.
0:33:32 > 0:33:35It's very important to remember that the room that you do together
0:33:35 > 0:33:37needs to be child-friendly.
0:33:37 > 0:33:39OK, that's a good point.
0:33:41 > 0:33:44It's a bit disappointing that their Islamic screen
0:33:44 > 0:33:48and that Moroccan feel wasn't really taken into consideration.
0:33:48 > 0:33:51I really wanted to do something unusual
0:33:51 > 0:33:54and that's what they sounded like they were up for.
0:33:54 > 0:33:57I stuck to my guns and did it with my best intentions
0:33:57 > 0:33:59and it looked like it paid off.
0:33:59 > 0:34:01So I did good.
0:34:01 > 0:34:04I think after the feedback I've just given the two girls,
0:34:04 > 0:34:07I don't think that anything's going to change,
0:34:07 > 0:34:11because what I see behind the eyes is two people with big egos.
0:34:11 > 0:34:15And I think they'll continue to do exactly what they want.
0:34:19 > 0:34:23In Bexleyheath, it's also judgment day at the Powers residence.
0:34:24 > 0:34:28Up in Lily's bedroom, Sue is adding the final bits of bling.
0:34:28 > 0:34:31Stuck some diamante on the headboard which just sets it off.
0:34:31 > 0:34:34I think it's quite special now, quite pleased with it.
0:34:34 > 0:34:36Just hope Lily is.
0:34:36 > 0:34:37In the living room,
0:34:37 > 0:34:42Marina's also feeling confident about her dramatically dark design.
0:34:42 > 0:34:44I did say that I'd like to bring them over to the dark side,
0:34:44 > 0:34:48so obviously when they come into the room, we'll see if that's worked.
0:34:51 > 0:34:54With Marina and Sue out of the house, there's just
0:34:54 > 0:34:58time to see the results for myself before the homeowners return.
0:35:01 > 0:35:02In the bedroom,
0:35:02 > 0:35:07Sue had £3,000 to create her vision of a Hollywood glamour pad.
0:35:09 > 0:35:13She stripped out over 30 years of dated decoration
0:35:13 > 0:35:16to make way for diamante, gold and glitz.
0:35:18 > 0:35:21But will bling be the right thing?
0:35:25 > 0:35:27I do not like that wallpaper.
0:35:29 > 0:35:32I'm not sure I feel particularly relaxed in this room
0:35:32 > 0:35:35because it's got so much diamond stuff going on, you know,
0:35:35 > 0:35:39we've got crystal headboard, we've got the crystal in the knobs,
0:35:39 > 0:35:41you know, it's quite gold.
0:35:41 > 0:35:43We've got crystal on the lights, crystal on those lights.
0:35:43 > 0:35:45It's very in your face.
0:35:45 > 0:35:49There's quite a lot of bling for someone of this age group.
0:35:49 > 0:35:51How you feeling, Mum?
0:35:52 > 0:35:55Um, all right but a little bit, you know.
0:35:56 > 0:35:58I had a dream last night.
0:35:58 > 0:36:00- You did? - Yeah.
0:36:00 > 0:36:04I dreamt that your room was worse than what it started
0:36:04 > 0:36:07and I had a real row.
0:36:08 > 0:36:10Not sure how it's going to go down.
0:36:10 > 0:36:14It's more about Sue and not so much about Lily, as far as I'm concerned.
0:36:15 > 0:36:16In the living room,
0:36:16 > 0:36:21Marina had £3,000 to prove that dark could be desirable.
0:36:21 > 0:36:25Transforming the empty space into a relaxing family chill out area
0:36:25 > 0:36:29complete with mirrored fireplace, personal pictures
0:36:29 > 0:36:32and sumptuous furnishings.
0:36:32 > 0:36:33But does it work?
0:36:36 > 0:36:38Oh, it's very dark.
0:36:41 > 0:36:43I don't think they like dark colours, particularly.
0:36:43 > 0:36:46With Marina, I think you're worrying about nothing,
0:36:46 > 0:36:48cos you are a bit panicky poos.
0:36:49 > 0:36:53You are, you are. Actually, you haven't stopped going on about it.
0:36:53 > 0:36:54She likes the dark side.
0:36:54 > 0:36:57Good they put a fireplace in.
0:36:58 > 0:37:03Even just decorative, it still gives the room a focal point.
0:37:03 > 0:37:05It's just dark. It's just too dark.
0:37:07 > 0:37:10I don't know if they're going to like it.
0:37:11 > 0:37:13Oh, dear.
0:37:14 > 0:37:16I'm not bowled over by either room.
0:37:16 > 0:37:18But it's the client's judgment that counts.
0:37:18 > 0:37:20Welcome back.
0:37:20 > 0:37:22Hello, Lily. Nice to meet you.
0:37:22 > 0:37:25- And you. - Heard a lot about you, all good.
0:37:25 > 0:37:26Better be good.
0:37:26 > 0:37:28All good. How have you been feeling?
0:37:28 > 0:37:30Are you nervous or excited?
0:37:30 > 0:37:32- A little bit. - Clammy hands.
0:37:32 > 0:37:34A little bit of both, yeah, clammy hands, yeah.
0:37:34 > 0:37:36- You as well, Lilly? - Yes.
0:37:36 > 0:37:39Well. I suppose you'd better come in and have a look then.
0:37:39 > 0:37:41- OK. - Mind the step.
0:37:41 > 0:37:44Right, here we go, Mum.
0:37:50 > 0:37:53Whee, can I get in it now?
0:37:53 > 0:37:55- Do you like it? - Yes, I do.
0:37:55 > 0:37:57- Better than you thought? - Oh, yeah, different.
0:37:57 > 0:37:59- Stunning, isn't it? - Can you relax now?- Yeah.
0:37:59 > 0:38:01Right, you dropped a tissue, I think I might need that.
0:38:03 > 0:38:05Yeah, lovely.
0:38:05 > 0:38:07You like a bit of gold, do you, Lily?
0:38:07 > 0:38:08Oh, yeah. Who don't?
0:38:10 > 0:38:14It is just amazing and she's going to enjoy it,
0:38:14 > 0:38:17and that's, that's what I wanted, so...
0:38:19 > 0:38:20Good.
0:38:20 > 0:38:21And you?
0:38:23 > 0:38:26Yeah. Couldn't wish for anything better.
0:38:28 > 0:38:30Going to make me go now.
0:38:30 > 0:38:32We'll all be in tears in a minute.
0:38:32 > 0:38:33Be a wreck by the end of the week.
0:38:35 > 0:38:38Well, good, that's a really good outcome, isn't it?
0:38:38 > 0:38:42Now there's just the small matter of Marina's dark living room.
0:38:45 > 0:38:46Jeez.
0:38:46 > 0:38:49Oh, that's a colour.
0:38:56 > 0:38:58Look at the fireplace.
0:38:58 > 0:39:00Oh, my God.
0:39:03 > 0:39:05Oh, this is a shock.
0:39:05 > 0:39:07Nice shock?
0:39:07 > 0:39:10Funnily enough, yeah, it is.
0:39:12 > 0:39:15Traci, you're keeping quite quiet. You don't look very sure.
0:39:15 > 0:39:18It's just a shock to see something so bright that we had
0:39:18 > 0:39:21and then to go so dark, especially all the way round.
0:39:21 > 0:39:24It's not even one wall, it's all the way round.
0:39:24 > 0:39:26I think dark makes it look small.
0:39:26 > 0:39:29But there is a lot that I do like, so...
0:39:29 > 0:39:31- Good.- So, it's, yeah. - It's got elements.
0:39:31 > 0:39:35OK, well, I'm going to be talking to the designers soon.
0:39:35 > 0:39:36Anything you want me tell them?
0:39:36 > 0:39:39What is it you really wanted in the kitchen-diner?
0:39:39 > 0:39:42Just, you know, like a wow space.
0:39:42 > 0:39:44- A wow space. - Yeah.
0:39:44 > 0:39:46It's important not for it to be dark.
0:39:46 > 0:39:49Trace and I are differing on the colour scheme.
0:39:49 > 0:39:51I think the dark and light.
0:39:51 > 0:39:54When you're entertaining people, you want somewhere light, airy,
0:39:54 > 0:39:59welcoming, not dark and dingy like it's in some underground club.
0:39:59 > 0:40:03Not for me. It's not how I want to welcome my friends.
0:40:05 > 0:40:06It's another mixed response.
0:40:06 > 0:40:09Time for me to break the news to the designers.
0:40:09 > 0:40:11- Welcome back.- Hello there.
0:40:12 > 0:40:16Sue. Lily's room, they loved it.
0:40:18 > 0:40:20That's a relief. That's really good.
0:40:22 > 0:40:23Marina.
0:40:23 > 0:40:28Living room, it is quite a brave move making it that dark,
0:40:28 > 0:40:32but Nev actually surprised me because he really liked it.
0:40:32 > 0:40:34Great, good.
0:40:34 > 0:40:36And Traci's 50/50 on it.
0:40:36 > 0:40:38There are elements that she likes,
0:40:38 > 0:40:41but I have got a message for you both because you know that
0:40:41 > 0:40:44you're coming back to do this room as a joint room.
0:40:46 > 0:40:49- They don't want it too dark. - Right.
0:40:49 > 0:40:53So, good luck and I'll see you in a few days.
0:40:53 > 0:40:55- Thank you.- Thank you.
0:40:55 > 0:40:56OK.
0:40:58 > 0:41:02We've got two designers, one who likes dark drama.
0:41:02 > 0:41:05One that liked glitzy diamante.
0:41:05 > 0:41:07Not sure how all this is going to work,
0:41:07 > 0:41:09so fingers crossed we're going to get a great result.
0:41:09 > 0:41:11'Or else.'
0:41:15 > 0:41:18A new day brings a new challenge.
0:41:18 > 0:41:20Collaboration is key in interior design,
0:41:20 > 0:41:24so I need to see if these amateurs can compromise.
0:41:25 > 0:41:28Can wood-loving Pandora and industrial Emily
0:41:28 > 0:41:32find a way to work as a team in the Ahmeds' living room?
0:41:33 > 0:41:36I'm thinking a very slick modern room. Lots of hard lines.
0:41:36 > 0:41:41I've got a lot of metal lamps and tables with soft elements.
0:41:41 > 0:41:44So it's actually a family-friendly living room.
0:41:44 > 0:41:47Pandora's living up to her name.
0:41:47 > 0:41:50I could do box shelving using this lovely ply.
0:41:50 > 0:41:54Pandora's boxes are 13 wooden shelves
0:41:54 > 0:41:56she plans to hang from the walls.
0:41:56 > 0:41:58But they don't sit well with Emily's vision.
0:41:58 > 0:42:01How many boxes have you got to cover what area of wall?
0:42:01 > 0:42:05Well, for example for the TV, for their Sky box.
0:42:05 > 0:42:08- I just think... - Keep it simple.
0:42:08 > 0:42:10- Yeah, and not too many boxes. - Yeah.
0:42:10 > 0:42:12For my opinion, less is going to be more,
0:42:12 > 0:42:15so I think she said there were 13 boxes.
0:42:15 > 0:42:17I think maybe six would look good, especially
0:42:17 > 0:42:20if one of them's going to be encasing the television.
0:42:22 > 0:42:24As well as her batch of boxes,
0:42:24 > 0:42:29Pandora has one other key design piece she wants to incorporate.
0:42:29 > 0:42:31Hi, Emily, what do you think? Do you like the painting?
0:42:31 > 0:42:33Um. Truthfully?
0:42:33 > 0:42:36- Yeah. You don't like it?- No.- Oh, OK.
0:42:36 > 0:42:39I love it cos it's got a deep powerful Islamic meaning.
0:42:39 > 0:42:40It's very spiritual.
0:42:40 > 0:42:44It's one of the first letters of one of the chapters of the Koran.
0:42:44 > 0:42:47I don't think the colours complement all the colours that we've
0:42:47 > 0:42:49- put into the room.- OK.
0:42:49 > 0:42:53I love it, I think it's got... It's very powerful deep meaning,
0:42:53 > 0:42:56but, yeah, we have to compromise.
0:42:56 > 0:42:58I think they would embrace it...
0:43:00 > 0:43:02..because of its spiritual significance.
0:43:02 > 0:43:04I'm not convinced they would.
0:43:04 > 0:43:07I think it's probably more spiritual for you than it would be for them.
0:43:07 > 0:43:10And I'm willing to trade off that with many boxes.
0:43:10 > 0:43:12Well I, do you know, starting from a...
0:43:12 > 0:43:15What about if we put a black frame around it?
0:43:15 > 0:43:18No, I think it's... I think the problem is...
0:43:18 > 0:43:19Yes.
0:43:19 > 0:43:22For me, aesthetically for the room I don't think it does it any justice.
0:43:22 > 0:43:25OK. That's fair. I take that on board.
0:43:25 > 0:43:26I'll go with that.
0:43:26 > 0:43:29- OK then, can we agree that we don't use that?- OK, yes.
0:43:29 > 0:43:31Right, how we going then, girls?
0:43:31 > 0:43:32- Yeah, good. - Nice picture.
0:43:32 > 0:43:34Ha, that's debatable.
0:43:34 > 0:43:36Is it? Do you like it?
0:43:36 > 0:43:37Why, what have I said?
0:43:37 > 0:43:40No, you said it was nice, you obviously like it immediately.
0:43:40 > 0:43:41You were drawn to it.
0:43:42 > 0:43:47So Emily's artistic aesthetic has won over Pandora's spiritual style.
0:43:47 > 0:43:51Both our original ideas have had to morph and evolve.
0:43:51 > 0:43:54I love the painting so I did mind about it,
0:43:54 > 0:43:57but you know, a lot of jobs are about compromises.
0:44:01 > 0:44:04Over in Bexleyheath in the Powers' kitchen/diner,
0:44:04 > 0:44:07amateur designers Sue and Marina are getting
0:44:07 > 0:44:12on famously and have already agreed to combine Sue's trademark bling...
0:44:14 > 0:44:16..with Marina's dark wallpaper.
0:44:18 > 0:44:22- I think it's spectacular. - It just shouts tropical.
0:44:22 > 0:44:25To me it's not dark.
0:44:25 > 0:44:29There's a lot of white to counteract it so...
0:44:29 > 0:44:30I think it...
0:44:30 > 0:44:33I think it's magnificent. I want it at home.
0:44:33 > 0:44:38I think both Marina and Sue have gone quite bold with the kitchen.
0:44:38 > 0:44:40No, they seem to be going all out.
0:44:40 > 0:44:44Coming down every morning to that might be a little bit, you know...
0:44:46 > 0:44:48I know what you mean.
0:44:53 > 0:44:57In Ilford, after losing the fight to put up her Islamic painting,
0:44:57 > 0:45:01Pandora is desperate to hang on to her 13 wooden boxes.
0:45:01 > 0:45:03Let's clear out the ones we want to use.
0:45:03 > 0:45:05Yes. Did you like that idea with the lights?
0:45:05 > 0:45:07Yeah, love it, beautiful.
0:45:07 > 0:45:09OK, so that could go next to the TV, couldn't it?
0:45:09 > 0:45:11Do you want them together?
0:45:11 > 0:45:13- No, no gaps, gaps, gaps. - OK.
0:45:13 > 0:45:15So how many more units do we want to use?
0:45:15 > 0:45:18On the drawing, there's six units there that we were going to
0:45:18 > 0:45:20- use inside.- And then maybe we could put one on top then.
0:45:20 > 0:45:23- I'm thinking that's enough for me. - Yes.
0:45:23 > 0:45:27One, two, three, four, five, six boxes, agreed?
0:45:27 > 0:45:28Great, yeah.
0:45:28 > 0:45:30I haven't needed to make compromises
0:45:30 > 0:45:34because initially Pandora was willing to forego her
0:45:34 > 0:45:38print for more boxes, but we settled without extra boxes.
0:45:39 > 0:45:43Emily is very controlling and she wants it her way.
0:45:43 > 0:45:46She's happy... The thing she's happy to give on she almost uses
0:45:46 > 0:45:48that to her advantage to get something she wants, I think,
0:45:48 > 0:45:52but if she doesn't like it she'll just say no and move you on.
0:45:58 > 0:46:01But Pandora isn't giving up on her painting yet.
0:46:01 > 0:46:03Emily, am I going to be allowed to have my picture up?
0:46:03 > 0:46:06- The only thing apart from my light. Emily?- What?
0:46:06 > 0:46:09It might make the room, it might pull it together, Emily.
0:46:10 > 0:46:12LAUGHING
0:46:12 > 0:46:14That seems like a definite no from Emily.
0:46:14 > 0:46:16I'm still trying about the picture.
0:46:16 > 0:46:17I love the picture.
0:46:20 > 0:46:23Back at the Powers, the boldness of their design decisions is
0:46:23 > 0:46:25dawning on Marina and Sue.
0:46:26 > 0:46:30It's going to be a dark sparkly worktop. The flooring?
0:46:30 > 0:46:32Yeah, the flooring is also dark.
0:46:32 > 0:46:36After combining their two styles, it seems they've unwittingly
0:46:36 > 0:46:39ended up firmly on the dark side.
0:46:39 > 0:46:42The fire surround will be black.
0:46:42 > 0:46:45And, of course, there's the dark wallpaper.
0:46:45 > 0:46:47I don't think there's anything else that's dark.
0:46:47 > 0:46:49The drinks cabinet is dark.
0:46:49 > 0:46:52And what was Traci's one no-no, ladies?
0:46:53 > 0:46:54Not too dark.
0:47:01 > 0:47:06It's the final day in Ilford and not long before I see the finished
0:47:06 > 0:47:08joint room and decide who's impressed me the most.
0:47:08 > 0:47:11I don't think the palette's Pandora's at all really.
0:47:11 > 0:47:15It's all Emily's greys and metallic sort of obsession.
0:47:15 > 0:47:17Even her boxes now are Emily's grey,
0:47:17 > 0:47:21so they just look like part of Emily's design.
0:47:21 > 0:47:26I guess there's more of Emily's things because I was really thinking
0:47:26 > 0:47:32about the walls and the kind of cubist Mondrian kind of box idea.
0:47:32 > 0:47:34But I think we've still got time to make it work.
0:47:37 > 0:47:39And that can only mean one thing.
0:47:45 > 0:47:48I reckon I can talk Emily around it.
0:47:48 > 0:47:49And I think fair's fair.
0:47:49 > 0:47:52Her compromise is letting me have this picture.
0:47:57 > 0:47:59Easier said than done.
0:47:59 > 0:48:03So far Emily has been as inflexible as her metal accessories.
0:48:03 > 0:48:05- Emily?- Yes, dear.
0:48:05 > 0:48:08I really love this painting and I think it's working
0:48:08 > 0:48:12so well in the room, we've got so many harsh, very design things
0:48:12 > 0:48:16- and we just need that kind of sense of freedom and that texture.- Um.
0:48:17 > 0:48:19I just didn't think it blended,
0:48:19 > 0:48:23but now that we've put this colour on the walls it kind of diffuses it.
0:48:23 > 0:48:26- Let's put it up. - Great.
0:48:26 > 0:48:27It needs colour.
0:48:29 > 0:48:32Finally, Pandora's persistence has paid off.
0:48:38 > 0:48:41Over in Bexleyheath, it's all hands to the pump at the Powers'
0:48:41 > 0:48:45house as I'm on my way to assess their efforts first-hand.
0:48:45 > 0:48:48I'm dreading what I'm going to go and see in here
0:48:48 > 0:48:50because we don't want it too dark, because Traci will hate that
0:48:50 > 0:48:54and we don't want it too bland because Nev wants a bit of glitz.
0:48:54 > 0:48:56And let's not forget Lily as well.
0:48:56 > 0:48:57It's got to please them all.
0:48:59 > 0:49:00I feel quite confident.
0:49:00 > 0:49:04I might be delusional but I think it is quite bold but it's light,
0:49:04 > 0:49:06it's bright. I want to move in there now.
0:49:06 > 0:49:09Maybe the biggest risk is that we've mixed the dark
0:49:09 > 0:49:11with bright colours as well.
0:49:11 > 0:49:14It is a little bit in your face and they may not like that totally.
0:49:14 > 0:49:16MUSIC: Back To Black by Amy Winehouse
0:49:21 > 0:49:23'Let's see what they've done.'
0:49:28 > 0:49:34For £7,000 the Powers' derelict kitchen diner has been transformed.
0:49:34 > 0:49:37From building site to tropical delight.
0:49:40 > 0:49:45With clean lines, modern units and an explosion of black and bling.
0:49:48 > 0:49:49- Hello.- Hello there.
0:49:55 > 0:49:57Quite dark in here, isn't it?
0:49:58 > 0:49:59It's my choice of wallpaper
0:49:59 > 0:50:04but even though the background is dark it's bright, it's vibrant.
0:50:04 > 0:50:06I don't know what Traci's going to think of that.
0:50:06 > 0:50:08She made it quite clear that she doesn't like dark walls
0:50:08 > 0:50:11and she was worried about it. So perhaps that will be an issue.
0:50:13 > 0:50:15I think you've done a very good job.
0:50:15 > 0:50:20You've tied up the two rooms nicely, but you've also got Nev's glitz,
0:50:20 > 0:50:24you've got Traci's lightness and practicalities here
0:50:24 > 0:50:27and you've got something of Lily in here as well, so well done.
0:50:27 > 0:50:30- Thank you.- The only worry I've got is the dark wall.
0:50:30 > 0:50:34So I want you to leave so that they can be honest and say what
0:50:34 > 0:50:38they think of the room and then we'll get you back in to meet them.
0:50:38 > 0:50:41- OK? But well done. I think you've done really well.- Thank you.
0:50:44 > 0:50:46It's the moment of truth.
0:50:46 > 0:50:48With the family divided over dark colours,
0:50:48 > 0:50:51what will they make of the designer's brave statement?
0:50:53 > 0:50:54Wow.
0:50:56 > 0:51:01Eager to find out, the amateur designers are earwigging next door.
0:51:02 > 0:51:04I've got a glittery vase.
0:51:04 > 0:51:06Oh, yeah.
0:51:06 > 0:51:10Well, that is pretty lairy, isn't it, the wallpaper?
0:51:10 > 0:51:12What a change.
0:51:12 > 0:51:15The fireplace, look at the fireplace.
0:51:15 > 0:51:18Look at the wallpaper, that's what I like. Look at that.
0:51:18 > 0:51:21- I told you, I knew it would be good. - Oh, you like it, then?
0:51:21 > 0:51:23- Yeah, I love it. - Oh, good.
0:51:23 > 0:51:25- I really like it. - I really like it.
0:51:26 > 0:51:28I'm surprised you like the wallpaper, Traci.
0:51:28 > 0:51:29So am I.
0:51:29 > 0:51:31- Because, you know, you don't like dark.- No.
0:51:31 > 0:51:33It's not dark because of all the colours on it.
0:51:33 > 0:51:36- There you go. - Yeah, that's right.
0:51:36 > 0:51:38Sit and watch all the birds.
0:51:38 > 0:51:42Nev, do you like the sort of version of your glitter ball there?
0:51:42 > 0:51:43It's fantastic.
0:51:43 > 0:51:45In you come, designers.
0:51:46 > 0:51:49- Hello. - Hello.
0:51:49 > 0:51:51Amazing, absolutely amazing.
0:51:51 > 0:51:54We're just so happy that you like it.
0:51:54 > 0:51:58This experience has made me realise that I have got a talent that's
0:51:58 > 0:52:01worth pursuing so it makes me want to do that now and take it forward.
0:52:01 > 0:52:03Really, really happy.
0:52:03 > 0:52:06- You're not crying again, are you, Traci?- A little bit. Thank you.
0:52:06 > 0:52:08- Great job. - It was quite overwhelming.
0:52:08 > 0:52:12I was surprised at how emotional I felt, but it was what myself and
0:52:12 > 0:52:15Sue always wanted, we just wanted the legacy for the homeowners.
0:52:15 > 0:52:17THEY LAUGH
0:52:17 > 0:52:20Marina has impressed me the most as an amateur designer.
0:52:20 > 0:52:25When you design a room, I like to see someone really push the limits
0:52:25 > 0:52:28and I think she's got that edginess that you need.
0:52:28 > 0:52:32I think Sue is competent but just a little bit too safe.
0:52:32 > 0:52:35I've lived in this house for 56 years.
0:52:35 > 0:52:38I've never, ever dreamt that it could look like this,
0:52:38 > 0:52:42but it's different and you have to move on, don't you?
0:52:43 > 0:52:45What a fantastic result.
0:52:47 > 0:52:50But will it be the same happy ending over at the Ahmeds'?
0:52:53 > 0:52:54When I go and look at this joint room
0:52:54 > 0:52:57I want to see both of the designers in the room.
0:52:57 > 0:53:00I don't want to see one dominating the other, and even though
0:53:00 > 0:53:04Pandora took a knock, I hope she's still in that room.
0:53:04 > 0:53:07I personally would have preferred to have done something a little
0:53:07 > 0:53:12bit more cutting edge, but I think we've fulfilled our task.
0:53:12 > 0:53:15I think Khansa and Sherjeel will actually really like it.
0:53:15 > 0:53:18I do love the living room. I'm not totally happy with it.
0:53:18 > 0:53:20I think we could have done a lot better.
0:53:23 > 0:53:27For both designers, it seems that compromise hasn't come easy,
0:53:27 > 0:53:29but you don't know if it's going to work
0:53:29 > 0:53:31until you're standing in the finished room.
0:53:34 > 0:53:39For £3,500, the Ahmeds' dull and dated living room has been
0:53:39 > 0:53:43transformed into a sleek and sophisticated chill-out pad.
0:53:44 > 0:53:48The room is now dominated by Emily's grey and metal style.
0:53:50 > 0:53:53But Pandora did fight to hang her precious painting
0:53:53 > 0:53:54and her wall boxes.
0:53:55 > 0:53:58Which Emily painted grey.
0:53:58 > 0:54:00- Hello.- Hello again.
0:54:04 > 0:54:07- It's a very trendy room, isn't it? - Trendy?
0:54:07 > 0:54:10Yeah, I think it looks very, sort of, contemporary.
0:54:11 > 0:54:13Who did what here?
0:54:13 > 0:54:16Where are you, Pandora, because I don't see much of you.
0:54:16 > 0:54:20I'm to do with the more kind of structural architectural things.
0:54:20 > 0:54:25The box idea and the recess kind of graphic design
0:54:25 > 0:54:28and Emily was more of the soft furnishings.
0:54:30 > 0:54:31Yeah, that's nice.
0:54:33 > 0:54:37What worries me, it doesn't feel like a family room somehow.
0:54:37 > 0:54:40It almost doesn't look like children would live here.
0:54:40 > 0:54:44But I think it... Because we've left quite a lot of empty space,
0:54:44 > 0:54:47it gives them some scope to do what they want.
0:54:47 > 0:54:51Looks lovely and stylish. But just a little bit cold.
0:54:51 > 0:54:53- But it does look very nice. - Thank you.
0:54:53 > 0:54:57OK, well the homeowners are about to come back, but because
0:54:57 > 0:55:00I want them to be honest about the room, I want you two to go outside.
0:55:00 > 0:55:02Will do. OK? Thanks, Celia.
0:55:02 > 0:55:04OK. See you in a bit.
0:55:08 > 0:55:10'I'm really not sure.'
0:55:10 > 0:55:13Is this a room that can suit all age groups?
0:55:13 > 0:55:16I think my biggest worry would be if it wasn't practical
0:55:16 > 0:55:19again for the kids because we're in that room all the time.
0:55:19 > 0:55:22- That's the main room for us. - We're just itching to get in there
0:55:22 > 0:55:24and see what the girls have come up with.
0:55:32 > 0:55:33I like it.
0:55:34 > 0:55:36Actually I do. I like it a lot.
0:55:38 > 0:55:42I love it. It's really better than what I thought.
0:55:42 > 0:55:43Size the same?
0:55:43 > 0:55:45Yes, exactly the same.
0:55:46 > 0:55:49The size is the same.
0:55:49 > 0:55:51- I love the floor, as well. Oh, wow. - Yes, it's very nice.
0:55:51 > 0:55:54And I like the lighting in here, as well.
0:55:54 > 0:55:56I think I'm going to get my warm cosiness.
0:55:56 > 0:55:59And the kids will, I think they'll really enjoy themselves in there.
0:55:59 > 0:56:01They can still freely run around.
0:56:02 > 0:56:07Oh, they've got an Arabic letter on the wall. That is brilliant.
0:56:07 > 0:56:09- It's Arabic lettering. - Absolutely marvellous.
0:56:09 > 0:56:11It's my favourite thing in the room actually.
0:56:11 > 0:56:13It's an Arabic word, it's a very...
0:56:13 > 0:56:14It's a really nice touch.
0:56:14 > 0:56:16Is it adventurous enough for you?
0:56:16 > 0:56:18It's really adventurous, I think.
0:56:20 > 0:56:25I mean it's... I'm lost for words, Celia.
0:56:25 > 0:56:27In you come, designers.
0:56:28 > 0:56:31Hello. Lovely to meet you.
0:56:31 > 0:56:34- I'm so glad you liked it. - Nice to meet you.
0:56:36 > 0:56:39Thank you, guys, so much first of all. We're just...
0:56:39 > 0:56:42- We love it. - You love it, that's so nice to hear.
0:56:42 > 0:56:43You took a risk.
0:56:43 > 0:56:46You put your home in their hands - was it worth it?
0:56:46 > 0:56:49- Yes, it was. - Absolutely.- Yes, definitely.
0:56:49 > 0:56:51It's the best thing we've ever done.
0:56:51 > 0:56:54It's been really heartfelt that they were so happy.
0:56:54 > 0:56:57Do you like it, do you like your new room?
0:56:57 > 0:56:59I'm hungry for more interior design.
0:56:59 > 0:57:00Who is going to go and sit on the cushion?
0:57:00 > 0:57:03And I look forward to doing some more in the future.
0:57:03 > 0:57:04Make some space for me.
0:57:05 > 0:57:08If I had to pick one designer that really impressed me, it would
0:57:08 > 0:57:11be Emily, purely because you're designing for the family
0:57:11 > 0:57:12and she got it right.
0:57:12 > 0:57:17They absolutely love the kitchen and they love the joint room.
0:57:17 > 0:57:18Thumbs up to her.
0:57:18 > 0:57:20It's going to push the whole house forward now.
0:57:20 > 0:57:23We're going to come up with new things that are just going
0:57:23 > 0:57:26to complement the brilliant things that the designers have done.
