0:00:02 > 0:00:05Would you hand over your front door keys to complete strangers...

0:00:05 > 0:00:06I can't believe what we've done.

0:00:06 > 0:00:08Cooee!

0:00:08 > 0:00:10..in exchange for a massive makeover?

0:00:10 > 0:00:12Red sky at night.

0:00:12 > 0:00:14I'm not sure I would.

0:00:14 > 0:00:17Different people have different tastes.

0:00:17 > 0:00:22I'm Celia Sawyer and I've been an interior designer for a decade.

0:00:22 > 0:00:25In this series, I'll be introducing families at the end

0:00:25 > 0:00:26of their decorating tether...

0:00:26 > 0:00:29We just can't move forward. Everybody's ideas are so different.

0:00:29 > 0:00:32..to interior designers who are desperate to help.

0:00:32 > 0:00:33Yes!

0:00:33 > 0:00:35The plug for the light.

0:00:35 > 0:00:38But these designers are not professionals.

0:00:38 > 0:00:40Let's just hope they like space films, eh?

0:00:40 > 0:00:42In fact, they're complete amateurs.

0:00:42 > 0:00:45- They've wrecked that room. - That is different.

0:00:45 > 0:00:48- What have we done? - They may have passion...

0:00:48 > 0:00:50I know about composition, dude.

0:00:50 > 0:00:51..they might even have vision...

0:00:51 > 0:00:54I like to create a temple of hope.

0:00:54 > 0:00:57And lovely colours, lovely colours, lovely colours.

0:00:57 > 0:00:59..but I'm giving them just five days to do the job.

0:00:59 > 0:01:01You beauty.

0:01:01 > 0:01:03My question is, will it be tears of joy...

0:01:03 > 0:01:05- Wow.- Oh, look at this.

0:01:05 > 0:01:07Couldn't wish for anything better.

0:01:07 > 0:01:08..or just plain tears?

0:01:08 > 0:01:10I'm regretting it.

0:01:10 > 0:01:11He's going to hate it.

0:01:15 > 0:01:18People think interior design is easy, but it's not.

0:01:18 > 0:01:22My career took off after I designed my own home and people sat up

0:01:22 > 0:01:24and took notice.

0:01:24 > 0:01:25Now I get to travel the world

0:01:25 > 0:01:28and work with clients designing homes worth millions.

0:01:28 > 0:01:30But whether you're an amateur or a professional,

0:01:30 > 0:01:32the basic rules are exactly the same.

0:01:32 > 0:01:36It's very, very important as an interior designer

0:01:36 > 0:01:39that you don't just create a pretty room, that you actually

0:01:39 > 0:01:42think about practicalities, get the technical side right.

0:01:42 > 0:01:44These are all key elements for a good design.

0:01:44 > 0:01:47Now, I'm exposing keen interior design amateurs

0:01:47 > 0:01:49to the world of the professional.

0:01:49 > 0:01:52Whilst my friends are out in the park playing football,

0:01:52 > 0:01:56I was the one sat indoors watching interior design programmes.

0:01:56 > 0:01:58Having only done up their places,

0:01:58 > 0:02:00they're at the same point I was when I launched my career.

0:02:00 > 0:02:03I'm looking forward to getting my hands on someone else's home.

0:02:03 > 0:02:06So I'm hooking them up with families stuck in design stalemates,

0:02:06 > 0:02:09to see whether they've what it takes.

0:02:09 > 0:02:12It's a brave experiment for all concerned, as the designers

0:02:12 > 0:02:17and families won't meet until it's all over.

0:02:17 > 0:02:20This week, I'm between Fareham on the south coast

0:02:20 > 0:02:23and Harrow in northwest London, trying to breathe some

0:02:23 > 0:02:27interior design life into the homes of two desperate families.

0:02:29 > 0:02:32First, it's to Fareham, where just a short walk from the beach

0:02:32 > 0:02:33live the Parkers.

0:02:35 > 0:02:39Jo, Russell, and their two boys,

0:02:39 > 0:02:43William and Tom, who are seven and ten.

0:02:43 > 0:02:46But the look of their home has been causing some conflict.

0:02:46 > 0:02:48We've been at the house now for six years and ever

0:02:48 > 0:02:52since we've moved here, we've basically been at loggerheads

0:02:52 > 0:02:54ever since, on how to decorate the house.

0:02:54 > 0:02:56I've got my taste, Russ has got his taste

0:02:56 > 0:02:58and it just doesn't seem to be working

0:02:58 > 0:03:01when we come to making decisions on how to decorate the rooms.

0:03:02 > 0:03:07I'm a florist, so I like to sort of create lovely things.

0:03:07 > 0:03:10I love experimenting with colours.

0:03:10 > 0:03:13Unfortunately, I'm married to Captain Sensible.

0:03:14 > 0:03:18I like things simple, no fuss, just basic.

0:03:18 > 0:03:21Creams or whites, that sort of thing.

0:03:21 > 0:03:24I feel like I've spent my entire married life trying to persuade

0:03:24 > 0:03:27Russell that we can do something creative in the house, we can inject

0:03:27 > 0:03:31some colour and, unfortunately, Russ has just sort of

0:03:31 > 0:03:32spent his entire...

0:03:32 > 0:03:35My whole married life has been spent dodging that bullet.

0:03:35 > 0:03:39So, it's obviously true that opposites attract.

0:03:39 > 0:03:43I have a mantra that... "May there always be pebbles in your pocket

0:03:43 > 0:03:44"and sand in your shoes" -

0:03:44 > 0:03:48and I would love to bring the beach more into our home.

0:03:48 > 0:03:50I don't know what that's all about.

0:03:50 > 0:03:52We all love the beach, but the beach is fine where it is,

0:03:52 > 0:03:56it's a short walk down the road, we can all go and enjoy it

0:03:56 > 0:04:01when we want and come back and settle down to the house as it is.

0:04:02 > 0:04:06Faced with the immovable object that is Captain Sensible,

0:04:06 > 0:04:08Jo has decided to reach out for help.

0:04:08 > 0:04:09This is a huge gamble -

0:04:09 > 0:04:12inviting some amateur interior designers into the home,

0:04:12 > 0:04:19but I just feel that if it's a way of getting Russ to see that it would

0:04:19 > 0:04:23work, introducing more creativity, more colours, more textures.

0:04:23 > 0:04:26If he's not going to trust me, then I'm hoping he's going to trust them.

0:04:29 > 0:04:31Before these amateurs get here, I want to have a good

0:04:31 > 0:04:34nose around and see the problems for myself.

0:04:39 > 0:04:43- Hello.- Hi, Jo, I'm Celia.- Hi.- Nice to meet you.- Nice to meet you.

0:04:47 > 0:04:48This is our room.

0:04:51 > 0:04:53Ah, it's quite neutral, isn't it?

0:04:53 > 0:04:56- Yes, surprise, surprise. - Nice and safe. That's how I like it.

0:04:56 > 0:04:59So what is it you...? What doesn't work in here for you?

0:04:59 > 0:05:02I've got this idea of a room with a view

0:05:02 > 0:05:06and if it can be incorporated in this room, it would be fantastic.

0:05:06 > 0:05:07So that's sort of, like,

0:05:07 > 0:05:11bringing, preferably, a beach scene into the room.

0:05:11 > 0:05:13I just think it would look lovely.

0:05:13 > 0:05:16Let's push the boundaries a little bit, let's go for it.

0:05:16 > 0:05:18He's sweating a bit, isn't he?

0:05:18 > 0:05:20I can't... Yeah, you see, it's difficult to see...

0:05:20 > 0:05:23I think I might get my way here definitely, I hope so, anyway.

0:05:23 > 0:05:27I think a change, a change is needed now in this room, definitely.

0:05:27 > 0:05:28OK, well, that's good.

0:05:28 > 0:05:32You agree on something, so agree to disagree on the rest, I guess.

0:05:32 > 0:05:34Yes, yeah.

0:05:34 > 0:05:37A room with a view. That's a clear brief from Jo, at least,

0:05:37 > 0:05:39but will they agree on the other room?

0:05:40 > 0:05:43So, this is the kid's room.

0:05:43 > 0:05:44They both sleep together,

0:05:44 > 0:05:48they've got bunk beds which are, er...yeah, which are good.

0:05:48 > 0:05:50Yeah, definitely. No, they use it a lot.

0:05:50 > 0:05:53I mean, they do come downstairs a lot, but they do like their den and

0:05:53 > 0:05:56I think that's what we'd like the interior designers to really let

0:05:56 > 0:06:00their imaginations run wild, create something really special for them.

0:06:00 > 0:06:02Want to bring their mates back and upstairs.

0:06:02 > 0:06:06- So anything goes? - Absolutely anything goes.

0:06:06 > 0:06:08Oh, I do like a brave brief.

0:06:08 > 0:06:12Let's hope they don't live to regret it.

0:06:12 > 0:06:14Hand over those keys. Off you go.

0:06:14 > 0:06:17- Cheers, thank you.- Bye.- Have fun.

0:06:17 > 0:06:20Jo and Russell now have two nail-biting days

0:06:20 > 0:06:22before returning to see the first two rooms.

0:06:22 > 0:06:23Bye, see you.

0:06:24 > 0:06:27Up until now, they've had no idea who they're

0:06:27 > 0:06:29letting into their precious home.

0:06:29 > 0:06:31So, I suppose I'd better show them.

0:06:35 > 0:06:36First up is Sara,

0:06:36 > 0:06:40an events producer who specialises in fashion catwalk shows.

0:06:40 > 0:06:44My style is about glamour, but it's a kind of mix of all

0:06:44 > 0:06:47different styles and then bringing them all together

0:06:47 > 0:06:48into a huge melange.

0:06:50 > 0:06:52Oh, my word. What is that?

0:06:54 > 0:06:56One thing you won't get from me is beige.

0:06:57 > 0:07:03En masse, I love bold statement colours.

0:07:05 > 0:07:08You guys are really lucky to have me, cos I've got

0:07:08 > 0:07:13so many ideas that I haven't even tried out in my house

0:07:13 > 0:07:16and I can't wait to try them out in yours.

0:07:17 > 0:07:20OK. My heart... I'm having slight heart palpitations now.

0:07:20 > 0:07:23I think, "Bring back beige, it's all forgiven!"

0:07:24 > 0:07:25That's nice.

0:07:25 > 0:07:28We've solved the problem before the second designer's even got in.

0:07:30 > 0:07:34And here he is - Zyg. He used to work in the movies.

0:07:35 > 0:07:39In my previous life, I was a model-maker in the film industry,

0:07:39 > 0:07:43so my style is based on familiar and famous films.

0:07:43 > 0:07:45- Crikey.- Oh, my gosh.

0:07:45 > 0:07:47I cannot stand conventional.

0:07:47 > 0:07:50Why live in a boring home when you can live in a movie set?

0:07:54 > 0:07:58The one thing I can promise you is I'm going to surprise you.

0:07:58 > 0:08:00Oh, my word!

0:08:00 > 0:08:02I'm actually quite scared now.

0:08:02 > 0:08:05Oh, my goodness, we could be coming back to something,

0:08:05 > 0:08:06like, so way out there.

0:08:06 > 0:08:10I know I was up for a change but, you know.

0:08:10 > 0:08:13Aha! The bedroom.

0:08:13 > 0:08:16The amateurs have had floor plans ahead of time,

0:08:16 > 0:08:19but it's only fair they see what they're getting themselves into.

0:08:19 > 0:08:24For big kid Zyg, there's a budget of £4,000 for the boys' room...

0:08:24 > 0:08:28OK, no problem. Do something with this.

0:08:28 > 0:08:32..and the same for Sara in the master bedroom.

0:08:32 > 0:08:36I mean, it's quite pretty, but it's boring, isn't it?

0:08:36 > 0:08:41I mean, the colour has just got to come in somehow.

0:08:41 > 0:08:44They've been given info on the family and their design

0:08:44 > 0:08:48dilemmas, but I need to make sure they totally understand the brief.

0:08:48 > 0:08:50- Meet Sara.- Oh, you're a man.

0:08:50 > 0:08:53Not sure what to say about that, but hello.

0:08:53 > 0:08:56- Hello to you too.- Take a seat. - Thank you.

0:08:58 > 0:09:01- So it's the master bedroom that you're doing, Sara, isn't it?- Yes.

0:09:01 > 0:09:04And it is quite bland in there, isn't it?

0:09:04 > 0:09:07And I know that Jo is really keen to bring in some

0:09:07 > 0:09:09personality into the rooms.

0:09:09 > 0:09:12I can definitely bring them something more exciting.

0:09:12 > 0:09:14Zyg, how are you feeling about your room?

0:09:14 > 0:09:18- Cos you're doing the children's room.- I am.- Yeah.

0:09:18 > 0:09:20I'm interested, I'm definitely excited.

0:09:20 > 0:09:24Jo and Russ said, "Let your imagination run wild."

0:09:24 > 0:09:25How does that sound?

0:09:25 > 0:09:29It's a blank canvas and my forte is to make things theatrical

0:09:29 > 0:09:31and entertaining, so that's what I'm aiming for.

0:09:31 > 0:09:34Sounds good. Sounds exciting.

0:09:34 > 0:09:36This is going to be fun.

0:09:36 > 0:09:39We've got Sara, who's really, really confident,

0:09:39 > 0:09:42let's hope she can walk the walk, not just talk the talk.

0:09:42 > 0:09:46And we've got Zyg, who's completely theatrical and creative.

0:09:46 > 0:09:51Completely different people, two separate rooms, should be

0:09:51 > 0:09:52really fun to watch.

0:09:54 > 0:09:56As well as working on their individual rooms,

0:09:56 > 0:09:59Sara and Zyg's talents will be tested further

0:09:59 > 0:10:03when they have to collaborate on the beige living room later in the week.

0:10:08 > 0:10:1280 miles away in Harrow, northwest London, this ground floor

0:10:12 > 0:10:17Victorian flat is the cramped and cluttered home of our next couple,

0:10:17 > 0:10:19newlywed teachers Zaheed and Ceri.

0:10:21 > 0:10:24The flat's, um, yeah, it's messy, it's cramped.

0:10:24 > 0:10:25The reason why it's not our own is

0:10:25 > 0:10:31because most of the stuff, they're hand-me-downs from my mother-in-law.

0:10:31 > 0:10:34The heart of their problem is that when Zaheed moved in,

0:10:34 > 0:10:36Ceri was already sharing the flat with her mum.

0:10:42 > 0:10:45She actually helped me in buying the place with a deposit.

0:10:45 > 0:10:47A year later, we got married,

0:10:47 > 0:10:52so a lot of our resources kind of went on those two big events.

0:10:52 > 0:10:55Six months later, Zaheed's mother-in-law moved out,

0:10:55 > 0:10:58but she kept a massive presence in their lives.

0:10:58 > 0:11:00She kept her room.

0:11:00 > 0:11:02Even though she's been gone all that time, we've never actually

0:11:02 > 0:11:06touched the room, partly because of the lack of time

0:11:06 > 0:11:09and not really being able to afford to do it ourselves,

0:11:09 > 0:11:12but also because Mum still comes to visit and we don't really

0:11:12 > 0:11:15want her to feel like we've pushed her out or anything like that.

0:11:15 > 0:11:18- No.- No.

0:11:18 > 0:11:22It's like a wee kind of shrine to her almost, isn't it, that bedroom?

0:11:23 > 0:11:26A shrine? I'd call it a waste of valuable space.

0:11:26 > 0:11:29This smallish flat is already bursting at the seams with

0:11:29 > 0:11:30second-hand furniture.

0:11:32 > 0:11:36Basically, we're sort of stuck living in a hand-me-down hell.

0:11:36 > 0:11:39There's certainly one thing that we'd probably want to throw

0:11:39 > 0:11:42away quite quickly, er, it's the sofa.

0:11:47 > 0:11:50The reason we haven't got rid of the sofa is

0:11:50 > 0:11:54because it was something that we inherited from my mum

0:11:54 > 0:11:58and she was a massive fan of the sofa, but, unfortunately,

0:11:58 > 0:12:02the orange and yellow doesn't quite fit with what we're going for.

0:12:02 > 0:12:05It sounds like these busy young schoolteachers need to make

0:12:05 > 0:12:07this place their own.

0:12:08 > 0:12:10But first, I need to give it the once-over

0:12:10 > 0:12:13before the amateurs are set loose.

0:12:16 > 0:12:21So, it's straight through hand-me-down hell into the shrine.

0:12:21 > 0:12:25This is our spare room which we still call Mum's room.

0:12:25 > 0:12:26It's nice, innit?

0:12:26 > 0:12:30- And how often does she come here - Mum?- About once a month.

0:12:30 > 0:12:34It would be really sensible to try and use this space, wouldn't it?

0:12:34 > 0:12:37So that you've got a bit more space, cos you're the ones living here

0:12:37 > 0:12:39at the end of the day, not her any more.

0:12:39 > 0:12:42I just don't want to get it wrong once it's changed.

0:12:42 > 0:12:44- It's about respect? - Yes, exactly what it is.

0:12:44 > 0:12:47What would be the ideal scenario in here?

0:12:47 > 0:12:49Well, we need somewhere to actually do our schoolwork,

0:12:49 > 0:12:52cos we do teach and we do mark a lot, so it would be nice to actually

0:12:52 > 0:12:55find the space away from the living room where we can do that.

0:12:55 > 0:12:57What about style? Ceri?

0:12:57 > 0:13:01I think it would be a shame to put any dark colours in this room,

0:13:01 > 0:13:05as it is such a light and airy room as it is.

0:13:05 > 0:13:08Thankfully, the issues in the next room have nothing to do with

0:13:08 > 0:13:09Ceri's mum.

0:13:09 > 0:13:11In fact, she might even struggle to get in.

0:13:11 > 0:13:14And if you make your way past the fridge, which is

0:13:14 > 0:13:17quite a feat in itself, you find yourself in the kitchen.

0:13:17 > 0:13:21Gosh. It's very tight, isn't it?

0:13:21 > 0:13:25You've got to be almost apologetic when there are more than two

0:13:25 > 0:13:28people in here, because you want to apologise for lack of space.

0:13:28 > 0:13:31So, it doesn't function very well as a kitchen, does it, for you both?

0:13:31 > 0:13:33There's not really enough space to cook.

0:13:33 > 0:13:36The kitchen is actually... was brand-new.

0:13:36 > 0:13:39It's just that whoever put it in, I don't think

0:13:39 > 0:13:42they really thought carefully about what a kitchen actually needs,

0:13:42 > 0:13:46so they decided on this side to have a breakfast bar instead,

0:13:46 > 0:13:49which in a kitchen this size you really need more cupboard space.

0:13:49 > 0:13:52I don't think this was designed by a woman, actually.

0:13:52 > 0:13:54I absolutely agree.

0:13:54 > 0:13:56Or it wasn't designed by someone that likes cooking anyway,

0:13:56 > 0:13:57or ever cooks.

0:14:04 > 0:14:06You look scared.

0:14:06 > 0:14:08I don't know what you're going to do with the place.

0:14:08 > 0:14:09I'm not doing anything.

0:14:09 > 0:14:12You've got two amateur designers coming in

0:14:12 > 0:14:14and they're going to do it.

0:14:14 > 0:14:16That fills my heart with glee. It really does.

0:14:16 > 0:14:18Hand over your keys.

0:14:20 > 0:14:22And off you go.

0:14:26 > 0:14:29I really could not live with all this clutter around me,

0:14:29 > 0:14:30it's chaotic.

0:14:30 > 0:14:35It's not relaxing and they both need to relax, they're both busy people.

0:14:35 > 0:14:37Sometimes, you just need to get someone else in

0:14:37 > 0:14:39to sort out your problems.

0:14:41 > 0:14:44And I guess they need to finally see who's coming in

0:14:44 > 0:14:46to attempt to solve theirs.

0:14:46 > 0:14:47Here we go.

0:14:49 > 0:14:52First up, is Tracey, a 49-year-old B&B owner,

0:14:52 > 0:14:56who thinks the very best shabby chic comes from the skip.

0:14:56 > 0:15:00I think a home is a reflection of your personality and, for me,

0:15:00 > 0:15:03having a car in my home is perfectly natural.

0:15:03 > 0:15:05Oh, my God. That's horrendous.

0:15:05 > 0:15:07I don't think you can categorise my style, I think

0:15:07 > 0:15:09it's just a collection of objects and things that I like,

0:15:09 > 0:15:12so who knows what could end up in your home?

0:15:12 > 0:15:13Oh, Tracey.

0:15:15 > 0:15:18Next in is aristocratic Zara, who believes

0:15:18 > 0:15:20we all deserve the finer things in life.

0:15:20 > 0:15:22I'm Zara Elizabeth Roberts.

0:15:22 > 0:15:25I'm 22 and I'm an estate agent from Shropshire.

0:15:25 > 0:15:28My design style is royal heraldry with added opulence,

0:15:28 > 0:15:29luxury and glamour.

0:15:31 > 0:15:34Oh, no, gold! I want to cry.

0:15:34 > 0:15:36Very Asian.

0:15:36 > 0:15:38My friends call me Her Royal Highness Duchess Tweedy

0:15:38 > 0:15:41and I'm well known for my royal style.

0:15:41 > 0:15:44Ceri and Zaheed, I believe one's home should be absolutely

0:15:44 > 0:15:47divine and I'm going to give you my stately style.

0:15:48 > 0:15:52Some would say I'm OTT, but you'll just have to wait and see.

0:15:53 > 0:15:54Oh, dear.

0:15:58 > 0:16:01It feels like there's a design taste-off brewing -

0:16:01 > 0:16:04posh panache versus really shabby chic.

0:16:07 > 0:16:10But before they begin, I want to make sure

0:16:10 > 0:16:13they understand what the clients need.

0:16:13 > 0:16:16- So, Tracey, the kitchen. - The kitchen.

0:16:16 > 0:16:20Ceri likes cooking, yet finds there's no space really

0:16:20 > 0:16:21and you can see why.

0:16:21 > 0:16:24We've got mother-in-law's room,

0:16:24 > 0:16:27now, Zara, you're going to be working on that room.

0:16:27 > 0:16:30They would like somewhere where they can work, as well as also having

0:16:30 > 0:16:32mother-in-law to come and stay, still,

0:16:32 > 0:16:34- cos that's very important to them. - Absolutely.

0:16:34 > 0:16:36I think it's important we need to get the balance

0:16:36 > 0:16:40between practicality and also the physical appeal of the room.

0:16:40 > 0:16:43Zara, you've got £4,000 for the bedroom.

0:16:43 > 0:16:47Tracey, you've got £5,500 for the kitchen.

0:16:47 > 0:16:50I'm going to leave you now and I'm going to come back in a few days

0:16:50 > 0:16:52and see what you've managed to create.

0:16:52 > 0:16:55And I'm going to bring the homeowners back. Good luck.

0:16:55 > 0:16:57- Thank you. - You're going to need it.

0:16:57 > 0:16:59Zara seems very, very confident.

0:16:59 > 0:17:02Let's hope she can deliver, let's hope she can please them,

0:17:02 > 0:17:04let's hope she remembers the brief.

0:17:04 > 0:17:08This is definitely going.

0:17:08 > 0:17:11Tracey's got a hard task ahead. That kitchen is tiny.

0:17:11 > 0:17:14She's going to have to try and create a very workable kitchen

0:17:14 > 0:17:19and even for an expert like myself, I'd find it tough.

0:17:23 > 0:17:27It's day two and at Jo and Russell's home on the south coast...

0:17:28 > 0:17:32- Cooee!- ..amateur designers Sara and Zyg have begun

0:17:32 > 0:17:34to let their creative juices flow.

0:17:34 > 0:17:36I've left them with head builder Nathan

0:17:36 > 0:17:39and his team to oversee the work.

0:17:39 > 0:17:42He'll be helping the amateur designers

0:17:42 > 0:17:45realise their visions in his own tactful way.

0:17:45 > 0:17:50- Another blue.- Another blue. Every blue imaginable, yeah.

0:17:50 > 0:17:51Florist Jo likes colour

0:17:51 > 0:17:55and the early indication is, she's going to get it.

0:17:55 > 0:18:00More, more, more is in my mind.

0:18:00 > 0:18:05Lots of colour, texture, bringing it all together, the blues,

0:18:05 > 0:18:10the seas, the views, everything, maximal-ism.

0:18:10 > 0:18:13Maximal-ism? That's a bold word.

0:18:14 > 0:18:17And certainly not one Captain Sensible Russell

0:18:17 > 0:18:18will want to hear.

0:18:19 > 0:18:21He's already on edge.

0:18:21 > 0:18:22Be careful, Tom.

0:18:22 > 0:18:24Tom, just move away from where he is.

0:18:24 > 0:18:27He almost hit you on the head with that.

0:18:28 > 0:18:32In all honesty, when I first saw those designers, they are...

0:18:32 > 0:18:35I know you wanted change and you wanted colour, but...

0:18:35 > 0:18:37I know.

0:18:37 > 0:18:41The thing that scares me the most is the fact that they are

0:18:41 > 0:18:46so out there and, well, particularly Sara, she kept mentioning bold

0:18:46 > 0:18:50and glamorous and I am so un-bold and glamorous, it's untrue.

0:18:52 > 0:18:53I wanted to have a story,

0:18:53 > 0:18:57I like having a story, something that I can really get my teeth into.

0:18:57 > 0:19:02I suddenly thought about a glamorous Hollywood couple where

0:19:02 > 0:19:05their sort of beach getaway home

0:19:05 > 0:19:08and what would their bedroom be like?

0:19:08 > 0:19:11And it would be something that was still luxurious and fabulous

0:19:11 > 0:19:14and glamorous, but it would be slightly rustic.

0:19:14 > 0:19:17So that is what I've decided to do.

0:19:17 > 0:19:20And lovely colours, lovely colours, lovely colours.

0:19:20 > 0:19:24I've aired that I am confident with colours and I like using colours.

0:19:24 > 0:19:25She scares you.

0:19:25 > 0:19:28She is scaring me and I didn't think I'd feel like this,

0:19:28 > 0:19:29if I was to be honest with you.

0:19:29 > 0:19:32I really thought that I'd... I'd sort of think, yeah, no,

0:19:32 > 0:19:34it's going to be great, all the colours are going to be fine,

0:19:34 > 0:19:37but her boldness and the blues and the reds

0:19:37 > 0:19:41and everything that was going on in her own room was quite crazy.

0:19:41 > 0:19:45But I've got a feeling that Captain Sensible's going to have

0:19:45 > 0:19:47to have a couple of doses of courage this week.

0:19:47 > 0:19:49Yeah, yeah, I agree.

0:19:49 > 0:19:52I think maybe I might be swigging out the bottle as well.

0:19:52 > 0:19:53Make mine a large one.

0:19:53 > 0:19:56It sounds like both designers are going big.

0:19:57 > 0:19:59Now, I mentioned the word "space" yesterday

0:19:59 > 0:20:02because there wasn't enough space and then it dawned on me,

0:20:02 > 0:20:05"Why not make it a space theme?" so I have done.

0:20:05 > 0:20:08So, I'd like to make it into a spaceship for the two kids

0:20:08 > 0:20:10and I want to put in some sort of view -

0:20:10 > 0:20:12a space window.

0:20:12 > 0:20:15And then I'm thinking, if I've got time, to put a control panel in

0:20:15 > 0:20:17of some description so they can fly the room.

0:20:17 > 0:20:18That's what I'm looking at.

0:20:18 > 0:20:21So every time they come in here, it's another adventure.

0:20:23 > 0:20:2680 miles away in Harrow and the adventure's begun

0:20:26 > 0:20:28on Ceri and Zaheed's two-bedroom flat.

0:20:28 > 0:20:31A skip has been delivered so all the unwanted hand-me-downs

0:20:31 > 0:20:35can make way for Tracey and Zara's unique designs.

0:20:35 > 0:20:38Helping each of them carry out the refit is builder Russell

0:20:38 > 0:20:41and he's keen to know Tracey's plans for the kitchen.

0:20:41 > 0:20:46It's going to be a social, cosy kind of kitchen, yeah?

0:20:46 > 0:20:51You've made it look a lot bigger than it probably actually is.

0:20:51 > 0:20:54Cunning move, Tracey, but trust me, it won't work.

0:20:57 > 0:21:00But are Zara's posh designs a better fit?

0:21:00 > 0:21:04So, I'm bringing sort of the early mid and late Renaissance

0:21:04 > 0:21:06period into my room.

0:21:06 > 0:21:09Renaissance for a flat in Harrow?

0:21:09 > 0:21:13Very sort of muted tones, but then you've got the bold, gold statements

0:21:13 > 0:21:18sort of dotted around and it's really impressive, really striking.

0:21:18 > 0:21:19I'll be the judge of that.

0:21:21 > 0:21:25Up the road, school's out and Zaheed and Ceri are heading to the local.

0:21:25 > 0:21:28I think they're in need of some reassurance

0:21:28 > 0:21:31from close friends Katie and Tom.

0:21:31 > 0:21:34Wish you'd been in that car with us when we saw who the designers are.

0:21:34 > 0:21:40- Why?- The first one, she has a car in her living room.

0:21:40 > 0:21:43Brilliant. Who was the other one, the other designer?

0:21:43 > 0:21:46So, think gold. Think dark reds.

0:21:46 > 0:21:49- A boudoir. - Like Hampton Court Palace, yeah.

0:21:49 > 0:21:53- Gold everywhere.- Yeah, gold.

0:21:53 > 0:21:54Terrific, innit?

0:21:56 > 0:22:00I have a fascination with gold which has been quite a longstanding

0:22:00 > 0:22:03thing, really. Let's face it, the Queen's got a gold state coach,

0:22:03 > 0:22:07so if she can have it, why can't everyone else?

0:22:07 > 0:22:10Let's be positive. It will be something special,

0:22:10 > 0:22:14something that no-one else will have anything like it in the world.

0:22:15 > 0:22:16She's right, you know.

0:22:19 > 0:22:22Tracey's applying a technique I've certainly never

0:22:22 > 0:22:24seen in kitchen design.

0:22:24 > 0:22:27I think a lot of what I do is quite experimental,

0:22:27 > 0:22:30so this is one of the experimental pieces, really.

0:22:37 > 0:22:42Back on the south coast and Sara has a plan for Jo's room with a view.

0:22:42 > 0:22:45It's a Muriel. I mean a mural.

0:22:45 > 0:22:51And it is a view of the sky, the sea.

0:22:51 > 0:22:55I think Russ is just going to be beside himself with anger.

0:22:55 > 0:22:57No, I mean glee. I mean glee.

0:23:01 > 0:23:04And theatrical Zyg's not going to be eclipsed.

0:23:04 > 0:23:07There you go. As you can see, beautiful, it will be.

0:23:07 > 0:23:09So, all I'm doing now, is working out the actual pattern

0:23:09 > 0:23:12and getting me nebula sorted out.

0:23:12 > 0:23:13Making me nebula in the right place.

0:23:13 > 0:23:16I don't want anyone telling me I've got it upside down.

0:23:16 > 0:23:18I was hoping there'd be an instruction booklet

0:23:18 > 0:23:20but I don't see it.

0:23:20 > 0:23:22How are you supposed to work it out?

0:23:24 > 0:23:28Thankfully, Nathan's team of builders are on hand to help.

0:23:28 > 0:23:32That's a job I'd recommend leaving to the professionals too.

0:23:32 > 0:23:35Just like being in space, innit? Look at this panorama vista.

0:23:35 > 0:23:37Let's just hope they like space films, eh?

0:23:39 > 0:23:42GUN ZAPS

0:23:45 > 0:23:51Back in Harrow and the teachers' flat is taking shape.

0:23:51 > 0:23:54Reclamation loving Tracey is trying to make them feel at home

0:23:54 > 0:23:59in their kitchen with school-like floor tiles and blackboard paint.

0:23:59 > 0:24:01And her Royal Highness, Zara,

0:24:01 > 0:24:04has plans to make the spare room comfortable for everyone.

0:24:04 > 0:24:06I'm just putting together the day bed.

0:24:06 > 0:24:08This is going to, obviously, act as somewhere that Ceri

0:24:08 > 0:24:10and Zaheed can sit in the day and relax,

0:24:10 > 0:24:14but also it's big enough, it's a single size for the mother-in-law.

0:24:14 > 0:24:15Very multifunctional.

0:24:16 > 0:24:19Day beds are brilliant design solutions for homes with

0:24:19 > 0:24:20limited space.

0:24:26 > 0:24:30Back on the south coast, it's nearly time to show Jo and Russell

0:24:30 > 0:24:34what amateur designers Sara and Zyg have created in their home.

0:24:35 > 0:24:38How much better does this look? And the blue's working.

0:24:38 > 0:24:41The blue is working, it's working, it's working, it's working.

0:24:41 > 0:24:43You can say it as many times as you like,

0:24:43 > 0:24:47but it doesn't change the fact, you're not the judge.

0:24:47 > 0:24:50How about that, then, guys and girls? Are we loving this?

0:24:52 > 0:24:55This time tomorrow, Zyg and Sara will be working together

0:24:55 > 0:25:00on a shared room and I don't want it turning into a war of words.

0:25:01 > 0:25:03With regard to working together, I think

0:25:03 > 0:25:05Zyg's stuck in a bit of a time warp.

0:25:05 > 0:25:08His hair, definitely, and the way he dresses

0:25:08 > 0:25:11and also he's going for this whole Star Wars thing.

0:25:11 > 0:25:14Not ideal, considering I'm at the peak of, you know, fashion,

0:25:14 > 0:25:17so, no, not brilliant, really.

0:25:17 > 0:25:19If we can work together, we will.

0:25:19 > 0:25:22If we can't work together, I won't.

0:25:22 > 0:25:26Our tastes are obviously in different directions,

0:25:26 > 0:25:28poles apart, I think.

0:25:28 > 0:25:31I think we might have a... not a conflict, I don't think,

0:25:31 > 0:25:33but we'll have a chat tomorrow.

0:25:33 > 0:25:37We'll have a word tomorrow with each other and we'll see what happens.

0:25:37 > 0:25:39But there's going to have to be a hell of a lot of compromise,

0:25:39 > 0:25:42that is for sure. For sure.

0:25:45 > 0:25:47Right, that's it, time's up.

0:25:50 > 0:25:52And time for the amateurs to clear off,

0:25:52 > 0:25:55so I can run my expert eye over what they've done.

0:26:04 > 0:26:09Zyg used his £4,000 budget to turn the boy's room into a spaceship

0:26:09 > 0:26:11complete with a full control panel.

0:26:13 > 0:26:16The blind has been replaced with a projector screen

0:26:16 > 0:26:18that the boys can use for gaming and movies.

0:26:20 > 0:26:25He's certainly taken this room to infinity, and beyond.

0:26:28 > 0:26:29I'm in space!

0:26:31 > 0:26:33It's extremely creative.

0:26:33 > 0:26:40I'm relieved that Zyg has actually created this

0:26:40 > 0:26:43and pushed the limits, pushed the boundaries,

0:26:43 > 0:26:45but in a really good way.

0:26:45 > 0:26:50The space is much better, they've both got their own beds,

0:26:50 > 0:26:55they've both got storage and it does look like a spaceship.

0:26:55 > 0:26:57What child wouldn't love this?

0:26:59 > 0:27:02I just hope Sara's been as creative in the grown-ups' room.

0:27:05 > 0:27:09She used her £4,000 budget to deliver Jo's room with a view.

0:27:10 > 0:27:13Built around the undeniable view is Sara's

0:27:13 > 0:27:16interpretation of a glamorous Hollywood beach hut where

0:27:16 > 0:27:20faded wood effect wallpaper sits side by side with decadent

0:27:20 > 0:27:25light fixtures, plantation blinds and an ornate mirror.

0:27:31 > 0:27:33It's very seaside-y.

0:27:33 > 0:27:37Jo wanted a room with a view and she certainly got one.

0:27:37 > 0:27:40I'm just going to have to sit and look at how this feels

0:27:40 > 0:27:42when you're in bed, actually.

0:27:44 > 0:27:45It's quite in-your-face.

0:27:46 > 0:27:49I mean, it's... It's certainly a view.

0:27:51 > 0:27:55So, she has created a really good room for Jo.

0:27:56 > 0:27:57Not sure about Russ.

0:27:58 > 0:28:01But we're about to find out.

0:28:02 > 0:28:04- Hi.- Welcome back. Hello, boys.

0:28:06 > 0:28:07- Hi, hello.- Are you excited

0:28:07 > 0:28:09- to see your new room?- Yeah.

0:28:09 > 0:28:11- Come on, then.- Can't wait.

0:28:11 > 0:28:14Finger crossed the boys like spaceships.

0:28:17 > 0:28:19Oh, my God.

0:28:20 > 0:28:23Oh, my word.

0:28:23 > 0:28:24Oh, wow!

0:28:24 > 0:28:27Boys, what do you think?

0:28:27 > 0:28:31Look at this. This is amazing.

0:28:31 > 0:28:35It's like in a spaceship. What do you think?

0:28:35 > 0:28:36My old bed used to be there.

0:28:36 > 0:28:39Look at that. What's behind? It's like a big...

0:28:39 > 0:28:41This is amazing. This is really good.

0:28:41 > 0:28:43There's a little control panel on the left there.

0:28:43 > 0:28:47- I was going to say, "Can I press it?" - Yes.

0:28:47 > 0:28:49Oh, oh-oh.

0:28:49 > 0:28:53- Celia, this is unbelievable. - This is amazing.

0:28:53 > 0:28:55It's a blind which doubles up as a screen

0:28:55 > 0:28:58so that you can play your gaming on it.

0:28:58 > 0:29:02Who thinks that all your mates want to stay round here now all the time?

0:29:02 > 0:29:03- Yeah?- Yeah.

0:29:04 > 0:29:08So, boys, if you had a message for Zyg, what would it be?

0:29:08 > 0:29:11Thank you for a cool room.

0:29:14 > 0:29:17What a resounding success?

0:29:17 > 0:29:20I hope Jo and Russell are as enthusiastic about Sara's

0:29:20 > 0:29:23blue-on-blue room with a view.

0:29:30 > 0:29:32Oh, my word.

0:29:34 > 0:29:35My word.

0:29:38 > 0:29:40You can definitely... There's the room with a view, Jo.

0:29:40 > 0:29:43- There's my room with a view. - My word.

0:29:43 > 0:29:45There's my room with a view. Oh, my gosh.

0:29:46 > 0:29:50Yeah, I do love this, this is great, this is really great, really,

0:29:50 > 0:29:51really great.

0:29:51 > 0:29:54I love the blinds, blinds are awesome.

0:29:54 > 0:29:57I suppose it's just the sort of the boldness of the other colours,

0:29:57 > 0:30:01I suppose, which are going to take a little bit of getting used to.

0:30:03 > 0:30:04But you wanted colour.

0:30:04 > 0:30:07I did want colour, yeah, I did say I wanted colour.

0:30:07 > 0:30:10I feel like I've got two different sort of styles.

0:30:10 > 0:30:12You've got the sort of the driftwood-y walls

0:30:12 > 0:30:14and the beach theme and I'm not quite sure how this is

0:30:14 > 0:30:18marrying up then with the gold and the sort of brightness,

0:30:18 > 0:30:21so it's almost like there's one room and there's another room.

0:30:21 > 0:30:24Yeah, there's the room with a view, yeah, yeah.

0:30:24 > 0:30:27If you've got a message, then, for Sara,

0:30:27 > 0:30:33obviously, she's doing the room with Zyg, so what would be your message?

0:30:33 > 0:30:37I love the creativity but, yeah, just definitely not so bold.

0:30:37 > 0:30:41She's 100% got the room with a view, but with

0:30:41 > 0:30:46the room with a view, in my mind, I had colour but softer colours.

0:30:46 > 0:30:48Relaxing, tranquil colours.

0:30:48 > 0:30:51But deep, deep, down, it's not quite what I expected and I suppose

0:30:51 > 0:30:55if I'm to give an answer, it's... I would say I'm not sure.

0:30:55 > 0:30:58- I don't quite like it.- Yeah.- Yep.

0:30:58 > 0:31:00That's what I would call a mixed viewing,

0:31:00 > 0:31:05but without feedback, how's an interior designer supposed to learn?

0:31:05 > 0:31:10- So, Zyg.- Yes.- The children loved it.

0:31:10 > 0:31:14- Thank you.- And so did Russ and Jo. - Glad to hear it.

0:31:14 > 0:31:18- You did an excellent job, I'm very impressed.- Thank you.

0:31:18 > 0:31:24Sara, your bedroom, lots of colour in there, isn't there?

0:31:24 > 0:31:25Very bright.

0:31:25 > 0:31:28The walls were very neutral, though.

0:31:28 > 0:31:30Some of them.

0:31:30 > 0:31:32I think they felt the colours were quite strong

0:31:32 > 0:31:35and a bit conflicting in places.

0:31:35 > 0:31:37I actually think you both did a good job there.

0:31:37 > 0:31:42You've got a joint room to do, obviously it's this room.

0:31:43 > 0:31:48Sara, just cool the colours down a bit and don't over-theme.

0:31:48 > 0:31:51This is not a kid's room now, this is a family room.

0:31:51 > 0:31:53Are you going to be able to gel this together

0:31:53 > 0:31:55and create something that they want?

0:31:57 > 0:31:59Mmm.

0:32:00 > 0:32:04OK. I will change my approach, to a limit.

0:32:04 > 0:32:07I still feel I can give them

0:32:07 > 0:32:12something that they will enjoy without being vanilla.

0:32:16 > 0:32:20In Harrow, amateurs Tracey and Zara have nearly finished the individual

0:32:20 > 0:32:24rooms they've been designing for homeowners Ceri and Zaheed.

0:32:25 > 0:32:28This is the interior designer's first chance to impress me

0:32:28 > 0:32:31before they join forces in the living room.

0:32:31 > 0:32:33I'm really, really pleased with how it's gone.

0:32:33 > 0:32:35I think it's all gone to plan, it's all gone really well.

0:32:35 > 0:32:38I'm really, really confident they're going to like it.

0:32:38 > 0:32:41To be honest, if they don't, I don't mind. I just love it.

0:32:41 > 0:32:43I am feeling chuffed, actually.

0:32:44 > 0:32:46I've put everything into this

0:32:46 > 0:32:51and I just hope that they... they do like it.

0:32:51 > 0:32:53In case there's any doubt about who did what,

0:32:53 > 0:32:56Her Royal Highness has one final touch.

0:32:58 > 0:32:59Classy.

0:33:02 > 0:33:05Time for the ladies to make themselves scarce.

0:33:05 > 0:33:08I need to inspect their rooms before the couple arrive back.

0:33:12 > 0:33:17In the kitchen, Tracey had a budget of £5,500.

0:33:17 > 0:33:20She downsized the massive fridge freezer for small separates

0:33:20 > 0:33:22that could be hidden away.

0:33:22 > 0:33:25She built a stable door to make the kitchen feel bigger...

0:33:26 > 0:33:30..and created cabinets and a worktop from reclaimed wood.

0:33:30 > 0:33:34Storage comes in the form of places to hang utensils,

0:33:34 > 0:33:37shabby chic cupboards and reclaimed containers.

0:33:45 > 0:33:47It feels quite dark in here.

0:33:49 > 0:33:53We've lost a cupboard on the wall, but we've gained a shelf.

0:33:54 > 0:33:57Got a slight storage issue, I think, still here.

0:33:58 > 0:34:02I think I would prefer to see more storage.

0:34:02 > 0:34:07All in all, it looks better than it did and much more updated

0:34:07 > 0:34:10and much easier to get more than one person in.

0:34:10 > 0:34:12So, they'll probably quite like it.

0:34:15 > 0:34:18I've been looking forward to seeing this next room.

0:34:18 > 0:34:21Zara's guest bedroom cost £4,000.

0:34:21 > 0:34:25She transformed the plain mother-in-law's room into an opulent

0:34:25 > 0:34:28Renaissance chamber fit for a queen.

0:34:28 > 0:34:31By replacing the double for a day bed,

0:34:31 > 0:34:34she created space for a dressing-table-cum-desk,

0:34:34 > 0:34:39a throne chair and extra storage behind a mirrored wall.

0:34:39 > 0:34:44She finished it with her signature gold, glamour and graffiti.

0:34:59 > 0:35:02I just want to be taken back by something I hadn't thought of.

0:35:02 > 0:35:04I mean, that's what's exciting me, going in there.

0:35:04 > 0:35:06I just want to see something that I didn't...

0:35:06 > 0:35:08I wouldn't ever have done it that way but it still works.

0:35:08 > 0:35:10- That would be amazing.- What is that?

0:35:11 > 0:35:14And it's plastic.

0:35:14 > 0:35:16Oh, that's so naff.

0:35:17 > 0:35:21It's all a bit weird. Erm... So what have we got in here?

0:35:25 > 0:35:27OK.

0:35:27 > 0:35:33Got a kind of desk for somebody very, very small.

0:35:36 > 0:35:38The day bed is a great idea.

0:35:38 > 0:35:42That's a great idea, just not very nice to look at.

0:35:44 > 0:35:45That's all I can say.

0:35:52 > 0:35:53The moment of truth.

0:35:55 > 0:35:58Will Ceri and Zaheed give the amateurs top marks?

0:36:00 > 0:36:02Oh, my God.

0:36:02 > 0:36:04Oh, wow! Now it's different.

0:36:07 > 0:36:08OK.

0:36:14 > 0:36:17The door is fantastic, I really like the door.

0:36:17 > 0:36:19That's pretty cool.

0:36:19 > 0:36:22I hate the floor. It looks like school.

0:36:23 > 0:36:26I don't like what's right behind you.

0:36:27 > 0:36:32Black. I realise it's a chalkboard that's kind of, yeah.

0:36:32 > 0:36:35Another thing I can't help but notice is a wooden work surface,

0:36:35 > 0:36:37which is what we hated before.

0:36:37 > 0:36:41- That's a newer wooden worktop.- Mmm.

0:36:41 > 0:36:43The breakfast bar's gone to be replaced with another

0:36:43 > 0:36:45pointless table, so it's...

0:36:45 > 0:36:50It wasn't functional before and it's even less functional now.

0:36:50 > 0:36:53You know what? It's better than it was before.

0:36:54 > 0:36:56I'm taking that as a split decision.

0:36:56 > 0:36:58But will Zara's attempt to combine class

0:36:58 > 0:37:02and functionality to the mother-in-law's room unite them?

0:37:03 > 0:37:05Wow! That's...

0:37:06 > 0:37:09That's bright and we have a chandelier.

0:37:09 > 0:37:10Oh, my God. What the hell?

0:37:15 > 0:37:19Weird. It's really weird. Looks like a different world.

0:37:19 > 0:37:23It's not something that I would choose to spend

0:37:23 > 0:37:24any time in whatsoever.

0:37:26 > 0:37:28- There's lots of gold there, as well. - Do you like gold?

0:37:28 > 0:37:29I hate gold.

0:37:30 > 0:37:35- She's actually signed... - Oh.- ..signed the wall for you.

0:37:35 > 0:37:37- Lovely.- That's nice.

0:37:37 > 0:37:40There's a bit of a hidden secret if you open the doors.

0:37:40 > 0:37:42Oh, really?

0:37:42 > 0:37:44Oh, there's a...

0:37:47 > 0:37:50- It's tiny. - Yeah, it's not a teacher's desk.

0:37:50 > 0:37:53I personally am going to use this room even less than

0:37:53 > 0:37:56- I did before now.- It's horrible.

0:37:56 > 0:37:57I'd say they're pretty united.

0:37:57 > 0:37:59Mum will hate this, no doubt.

0:37:59 > 0:38:02She's going to walk in here and feel so unwelcome.

0:38:02 > 0:38:05- Really? She might love it.- No way.

0:38:05 > 0:38:07But what about the day bed?

0:38:07 > 0:38:10Yeah. I'm a bit disappointed that it's a single bed

0:38:10 > 0:38:13as where are our friends going to stay when they come?

0:38:15 > 0:38:18OK, well, you know the two amateur designers are coming back to

0:38:18 > 0:38:22do a joint room. Any message you want to give to them?

0:38:23 > 0:38:26Maybe don't think so much about trying to make it

0:38:26 > 0:38:29all about image and maybe think more about function.

0:38:29 > 0:38:32OK. Come on, then, time to leave.

0:38:34 > 0:38:37I think my fear is, is that now they're obviously faced,

0:38:37 > 0:38:40not only with the challenge of listening to our feedback,

0:38:40 > 0:38:42but they're also faced with the challenge of working together

0:38:42 > 0:38:46and I think that they are both incredibly different,

0:38:46 > 0:38:51that I think, to be honest, they're actually going to forget us.

0:38:51 > 0:38:54I think their biggest challenge is going to be working together

0:38:54 > 0:38:56and I think, "So we're just going to get lost in the mix."

0:38:56 > 0:38:58I feel really flat.

0:38:58 > 0:39:02Neither of them loved the rooms and I'm sad.

0:39:02 > 0:39:07I hope this one is bloomin' good. It needs to be.

0:39:09 > 0:39:12- Hi.- Hi.- Hi.

0:39:15 > 0:39:18Just to start with you, Tracey, Ceri felt,

0:39:18 > 0:39:23because she's the one that cooks, there's not enough storage for her.

0:39:23 > 0:39:25Right, all right, OK interesting.

0:39:25 > 0:39:27She felt there was less storage than before.

0:39:27 > 0:39:31Zara, the bedroom.

0:39:31 > 0:39:34There's a desk, although be it a little bit small

0:39:34 > 0:39:38and that mum-in-law might not like such a small bed.

0:39:39 > 0:39:41OK, that's interesting.

0:39:41 > 0:39:44- Unfortunately, you're both in detentions.- Yeah.

0:39:45 > 0:39:48You're going to now work on the joint room together.

0:39:48 > 0:39:51We want to see you work together as a team.

0:39:51 > 0:39:54I don't know what you've got in mind, so maybe you can just

0:39:54 > 0:39:57tell me what your initial thoughts are on this room.

0:39:57 > 0:40:01Well, in terms of storage, for me, I've kind of got

0:40:01 > 0:40:04an idea for a cupboard that is really quite contemporary, actually.

0:40:04 > 0:40:06- Zara?- I've got a lot of ideas for this room.

0:40:06 > 0:40:10Practically, I've used a lot of clever storage ideas,

0:40:10 > 0:40:14a lot of sort of space-saving furniture as well, so, yeah.

0:40:14 > 0:40:17OK. You're now dismissed.

0:40:17 > 0:40:22I shall see you in a few days and hopefully see a fantastic room.

0:40:22 > 0:40:25- Off you go.- Lovely, thank you. - You certainly will.- Bye.

0:40:27 > 0:40:30I think it's going to be very difficult to combine

0:40:30 > 0:40:32styles between myself and Tracey.

0:40:32 > 0:40:34I made sure that my guest room is very practical,

0:40:34 > 0:40:38a lot of storage and I aim to do the same within the lounge diner.

0:40:38 > 0:40:41I'm hoping that, you know, like me, she's aware of the fact that

0:40:41 > 0:40:44there's now going to be two of us working on this project.

0:40:44 > 0:40:46We've both, you know... we've got to compromise,

0:40:46 > 0:40:49we've both got to compromise, but we've both got to, hopefully,

0:40:49 > 0:40:50bring out the best in each other, so...

0:40:50 > 0:40:54and the best in the design that we can both sort of pull together.

0:40:56 > 0:40:59Back at Jo and Russell's house on the south coast

0:40:59 > 0:41:01and the new day is bringing a new challenge.

0:41:01 > 0:41:03The joint room.

0:41:03 > 0:41:06Professional designers often need to work as part of a team

0:41:06 > 0:41:08and that is exactly what movie man Zyg

0:41:08 > 0:41:12and the glamorously colourful Sara will have to do.

0:41:13 > 0:41:18These two are poles apart, so this could be an odd coupling.

0:41:18 > 0:41:22Yeah. I know, you see, you've gone very Caribbean.

0:41:22 > 0:41:25Yeah, that's my theme.

0:41:25 > 0:41:27I actually really liked what he did.

0:41:27 > 0:41:30He did a beautiful model and he had some fantastic ideas and

0:41:30 > 0:41:33he had this whole whitewash thing and actually it was very beautiful.

0:41:33 > 0:41:35- Shuttering for the windows. - I love those.

0:41:35 > 0:41:37Got the shutters upstairs anyway,

0:41:37 > 0:41:40so if we mimic it downstairs, the house will look good from outside.

0:41:40 > 0:41:41Yeah. Plants, we've both got.

0:41:41 > 0:41:44I've gone more kind of American, early '50s.

0:41:44 > 0:41:46Doesn't matter, I think it'll all blend in.

0:41:46 > 0:41:48Well, that went better than expected, which is

0:41:48 > 0:41:52just as well, because they only have two days to complete the project.

0:41:52 > 0:41:55I think we can work together, we've got no choice, really -

0:41:55 > 0:41:56we have to work together.

0:41:56 > 0:42:00I got 100% on my kids' room and she got knocked back a bit,

0:42:00 > 0:42:04so I'll give her a bit of leaning towards her to make her shine

0:42:04 > 0:42:07a little bit more and make it sound like it's all her wonderful work.

0:42:07 > 0:42:09What a gentleman!

0:42:11 > 0:42:15So, what exactly have these new best friends settled on?

0:42:15 > 0:42:20The idea of the room is we've agreed on a colonial, Caribbean chic

0:42:20 > 0:42:23with a few bright issues here and there

0:42:23 > 0:42:25that Zara's dressing the room.

0:42:25 > 0:42:29Colonial, Caribbean theme? Colour from Sara?

0:42:29 > 0:42:31Exactly the things I warned them against.

0:42:31 > 0:42:34- Nice colour.- Very nice colour.

0:42:36 > 0:42:40Up in Harrow and after failing miserably with their first

0:42:40 > 0:42:42designs for teachers Ceri and Zaheed,

0:42:42 > 0:42:45Tracey and Zara have a chance to make amends.

0:42:45 > 0:42:50This time, their homework is a joint project - the living room.

0:42:50 > 0:42:54I do hate having unhappy clients, so I suggest they try to design

0:42:54 > 0:42:58this room around things that Ceri and Zaheed might actually like.

0:42:58 > 0:43:00They're a young couple, they want to entertain,

0:43:00 > 0:43:03- they're quite modern, they like film as well.- Yeah.

0:43:03 > 0:43:10So, my idea for the room is going to be themed within...on a film set.

0:43:10 > 0:43:12I don't... I can't do it, I don't like themes.

0:43:12 > 0:43:14I'm just not a theme-y person

0:43:14 > 0:43:18and I have to say that, you know, to me, it's just so obvious, sort

0:43:18 > 0:43:21of black and white, black and white, clapperboards.

0:43:21 > 0:43:25I can guarantee you there's a small Oscar somewhere

0:43:25 > 0:43:27that's going to come out of the box.

0:43:27 > 0:43:31Sounds like the pressure's getting to them. And so it should.

0:43:31 > 0:43:34Designing people's homes is a serious business,

0:43:34 > 0:43:37with consequences for everyone involved,

0:43:37 > 0:43:41like having to confess to your mum that the risk you took with

0:43:41 > 0:43:42her room didn't pay off.

0:43:44 > 0:43:46Will I like it? That's the first question.

0:43:46 > 0:43:49- Do you like gold?- No, I hate it.

0:43:49 > 0:43:53Think like a stately home mixed with the '80s.

0:43:53 > 0:43:56- Ghastly, then.- Yeah.- Eugh.

0:43:56 > 0:44:00So, are you able to give some suggestions for the living room

0:44:00 > 0:44:02to maybe make that a little bit...

0:44:02 > 0:44:04Well, we passed on our concerns to Celia.

0:44:04 > 0:44:07To be honest, I wouldn't be surprised if our DVDs

0:44:07 > 0:44:09have been turned into some sort of sculpture to go

0:44:09 > 0:44:12pointlessly in the middle of the living room.

0:44:12 > 0:44:14I'm worried that they're so different,

0:44:14 > 0:44:18that they're going to squabble and they're going to actually spend more

0:44:18 > 0:44:21time worrying about getting their own identity

0:44:21 > 0:44:25out there over the other designer, that they'll actually completely

0:44:25 > 0:44:27forget us in the mix.

0:44:27 > 0:44:30I think it's safe to say that we're both dreading going back tomorrow.

0:44:30 > 0:44:33- Yeah.- Well, it'll be interesting to see what they have to say

0:44:33 > 0:44:37and, you know, why they did what they did and what made them

0:44:37 > 0:44:39think that we would like it.

0:44:39 > 0:44:42We? At the moment, I'm afraid even Ceri and Zaheed

0:44:42 > 0:44:44don't seem to be getting what they like.

0:44:46 > 0:44:48I'm, you know, totally opposing the point of putting

0:44:48 > 0:44:50something in there that just doesn't work.

0:44:50 > 0:44:53- I think it's totally absurd. - Yours is purely aesthetics.

0:44:53 > 0:44:54- It is purely aesthetics.- Yes, yes.

0:44:54 > 0:44:56I think it's interesting that you're not able to

0:44:56 > 0:44:59adapt your style around a fireplace. Because, equally...

0:44:59 > 0:45:01I'm a lot older than you, you know, maybe I'm a bit too

0:45:01 > 0:45:04- long in the tooth to be...- Exactly, and I'm a younger person,

0:45:04 > 0:45:05this is for younger people here.

0:45:05 > 0:45:08I think maybe I know what, you know, the younger client will need.

0:45:08 > 0:45:09Oh, oh, oh.

0:45:11 > 0:45:13I can strike a compromise.

0:45:13 > 0:45:16OK, what are you prepared to compromise on?

0:45:16 > 0:45:19I'm prepared that we use that one but we paint it black.

0:45:21 > 0:45:25At the other house, at least the odd couple are showing their maturity.

0:45:25 > 0:45:30It looks very nice, dear. Very nice.

0:45:30 > 0:45:34Do you know when I say something's looking very nice, what do you say?

0:45:35 > 0:45:37- Thank you very much, miss. - There you go. Thank you.

0:45:37 > 0:45:40It's a proper, proper collaboration.

0:45:40 > 0:45:42We've got his floorboards that we couldn't use,

0:45:42 > 0:45:45they're on the walls, which is brilliant.

0:45:45 > 0:45:47His filigree, oh, he's hysterical about his filigree.

0:45:47 > 0:45:49I mean, it's so granny, you know,

0:45:49 > 0:45:52I couldn't believe this man was going mad for this granny filigree.

0:45:52 > 0:45:54That's all up, which is brilliant.

0:45:54 > 0:45:55It's my floor, which is great.

0:45:55 > 0:45:58It's my furniture, because I know how to do that really well,

0:45:58 > 0:46:01cos he is a bit kind of masculine in that front.

0:46:01 > 0:46:04A painting by his wife is in over the mantelpiece.

0:46:04 > 0:46:07I mean you can't get more Zygy than that.

0:46:07 > 0:46:10My lovely wallpaper, my palm wallpaper, but that sets

0:46:10 > 0:46:14the whole thing off and we did manage to totally compromise.

0:46:14 > 0:46:17Totally compromise and the room is gorgeous.

0:46:17 > 0:46:21Once more, Sara. You don't get to judge your own room.

0:46:23 > 0:46:26Back in Harrow and work is progressing well, which is

0:46:26 > 0:46:29fortunate, as I've got the daunting task of showing the room to

0:46:29 > 0:46:32Ceri and Zaheed in just a few hours.

0:46:32 > 0:46:35Hand-me-down hell has been eradicated

0:46:35 > 0:46:39and is being whitewashed ready for Zara's black and white movie theme.

0:46:40 > 0:46:44But Her Royal Highness hasn't managed to stop Tracey getting her

0:46:44 > 0:46:46old salvage into the room.

0:46:46 > 0:46:48Look what I found in the skip.

0:46:50 > 0:46:53See, I think that's beautiful. I think that's so beautiful.

0:46:53 > 0:46:55I love the colour of it.

0:46:55 > 0:46:58Now you see it, Zara, in situ, do you prefer it or do you still...

0:46:58 > 0:47:01I absolutely detest it...

0:47:01 > 0:47:03She may not be getting her own way,

0:47:03 > 0:47:06but at least she's agreed to compromise.

0:47:06 > 0:47:10Neither of them wanted to let up with their design

0:47:10 > 0:47:13on the fireplace and I thought it was going to go on all day.

0:47:13 > 0:47:16I think this is going to be ideal for Ceri and Zaheed, obviously,

0:47:16 > 0:47:17as it's a sofabed.

0:47:17 > 0:47:21Since then, they've actually really been working together really well.

0:47:21 > 0:47:24And they're bouncing off each other quite a lot now, which is

0:47:24 > 0:47:25quite nice to see.

0:47:26 > 0:47:30Oh, and Tracey was right, there's that Oscar.

0:47:30 > 0:47:32I've really enjoyed working with Tracey.

0:47:32 > 0:47:35I think we faced a lot of challenges because we're so different.

0:47:35 > 0:47:38I think, you know, we're two ends of the spectrum with our design.

0:47:38 > 0:47:40Obviously, I'm very high-end and Tracey, you know,

0:47:40 > 0:47:41likes to get it out of a skip.

0:47:41 > 0:47:44So, we have come across a few problems.

0:47:44 > 0:47:48Normally what I'd throw out, Tracey was bringing back in, so...

0:47:48 > 0:47:50The room is nearly done, the skip has gone

0:47:50 > 0:47:54and the mother-in-law's old sofa is out on the street

0:47:54 > 0:47:57and it looks like it's been bagsied by Tracey.

0:47:57 > 0:48:00But lying down on the job isn't going to impress me, which is

0:48:00 > 0:48:03what both these designers need to do right now.

0:48:04 > 0:48:08I am dreading going into Zaheed and Ceri's house.

0:48:08 > 0:48:10They're quite difficult to please,

0:48:10 > 0:48:14they didn't like either of the rooms and it's going to be a complete

0:48:14 > 0:48:17and utter disaster if this room also gets the thumbs down.

0:48:19 > 0:48:21I need to get in there and see it for myself.

0:48:23 > 0:48:25Between them, Tracey and Zara have turned

0:48:25 > 0:48:27the hand-me-down hell living room

0:48:27 > 0:48:29with its cluttered mismatched furniture...

0:48:32 > 0:48:36..into a more minimal brighter space.

0:48:36 > 0:48:40A Victorian fireplace is the room's new focal point.

0:48:40 > 0:48:43A space-saving round table nestles in the bay window

0:48:43 > 0:48:47and there's even storage in the form of retro trunks,

0:48:47 > 0:48:50an open display cabinet and funky shelves.

0:48:50 > 0:48:53A black and white movie theme is an attempt to add a personal

0:48:53 > 0:48:56touch for the film-loving teachers.

0:48:56 > 0:48:59But will it be enough to appease Ceri and Zaheed?

0:49:06 > 0:49:09- Hi.- Hello again.- Hello.

0:49:11 > 0:49:12Gosh.

0:49:15 > 0:49:18I see, we've got the royal crown here.

0:49:18 > 0:49:22Absolutely. Well, the sofa's actually a sofabed,

0:49:22 > 0:49:26so we tried to cleverly incorporate some more space-saving features.

0:49:26 > 0:49:27Whose idea was that?

0:49:27 > 0:49:30It was quite important for me, cos practicality is key.

0:49:32 > 0:49:36We've got extra storage and I see we've got the vintage cases.

0:49:36 > 0:49:39I quite like that mix between sort of old and new, so...

0:49:39 > 0:49:40so that's why they're there.

0:49:40 > 0:49:44Tell me about this cupboard here, this display unit.

0:49:44 > 0:49:46I think storage is one thing, but I also think being able to

0:49:46 > 0:49:50display really nice items is important.

0:49:50 > 0:49:52It's quite individual in design and taste.

0:49:52 > 0:49:56It doesn't concern me but it may concern them.

0:49:56 > 0:50:01Time for the amateur designers to eavesdrop from another room.

0:50:01 > 0:50:03Ceri and Zaheed are outside

0:50:03 > 0:50:06and they look like they're dressed for a premiere.

0:50:06 > 0:50:09I think if they nail this room, there's a good chance that we

0:50:09 > 0:50:11will forgive.

0:50:11 > 0:50:13You know, as teachers, we kind of believe in the infinite

0:50:13 > 0:50:16possibilities of human beings to actually achieve and do good

0:50:16 > 0:50:19and I think this is... That's the expectation that I'm going

0:50:19 > 0:50:23in there with and let's get... Let's see them get it right.

0:50:30 > 0:50:31- Well, hello, Celia.- Hello.

0:50:35 > 0:50:37You're quiet, Ceri, for once.

0:50:37 > 0:50:38Yeah, erm...

0:50:44 > 0:50:47- I kind of like it. I do. - Yeah, it's nice.

0:50:47 > 0:50:50It's very nice. Ah, check that out.

0:50:50 > 0:50:52- That's pretty cool. - That's cool, yeah.

0:50:54 > 0:50:56And we've won an Oscar, two.

0:50:56 > 0:51:00Fire's awesome, that's really nice. Look, a new sofa.

0:51:02 > 0:51:05- It's a sofabed. - Oh, is it really?

0:51:05 > 0:51:12Wow. I can see the different, erm, tastes of the two designers.

0:51:12 > 0:51:14They've obviously worked really well together.

0:51:14 > 0:51:18I'm very happy with this. Pleasantly surprised.

0:51:18 > 0:51:21- We've got a result. - For me, this is an A. It really is.

0:51:23 > 0:51:24An A? Ceri?

0:51:24 > 0:51:28Um, I think I'm going to have to agree, yeah.

0:51:28 > 0:51:31What a great result. Would you like to meet the designers now?

0:51:31 > 0:51:33- OK.- Girls, come back in.

0:51:36 > 0:51:41Hi. Hi, lovely to meet you.

0:51:41 > 0:51:45Yeah, one A-graded room, you know, delighted,

0:51:45 > 0:51:49delighted and I'm delighted that they loved the fireplace as well.

0:51:49 > 0:51:52I'm pretty chuffed all the way round.

0:51:53 > 0:51:55- It's lovely to see you.- You too.

0:51:55 > 0:51:57- So what do you think? - This room is brilliant.

0:51:57 > 0:52:00- This room is lovely.- It's really pleasing to hear that you like it.

0:52:00 > 0:52:03- Yeah.- Working on the front room has certainly, you know,

0:52:03 > 0:52:06shown my versatility within interior design.

0:52:06 > 0:52:09Obviously, my favourite style is obviously very royal,

0:52:09 > 0:52:11very luxurious, opulent.

0:52:11 > 0:52:13That's just purely not them.

0:52:13 > 0:52:14However, I feel maybe the, you know,

0:52:14 > 0:52:19my clientele is that bit, you know, more high-end, I'm afraid.

0:52:19 > 0:52:22The designer that's impressed me the most is Tracey.

0:52:22 > 0:52:24I really liked her kitchen.

0:52:24 > 0:52:28They both did well, but she just went a little bit further for me.

0:52:28 > 0:52:30So, well done to her.

0:52:30 > 0:52:33- Ceri and Zaheed, you took a risk. - We did indeed.

0:52:33 > 0:52:36You put your home in their hands. Was it worth it?

0:52:38 > 0:52:39I think in the end, yeah.

0:52:39 > 0:52:40Yeah, I would agree.

0:52:40 > 0:52:43Good. You're not expelled.

0:52:43 > 0:52:47- Thanks.- Thank you.

0:52:47 > 0:52:50I think it's really clear in this room that both Tracey

0:52:50 > 0:52:54and Zara have, you know, really made a fantastic effort to

0:52:54 > 0:52:56incorporate us into the design.

0:52:56 > 0:52:59If you knew us well, if you were our friends, and you walked

0:52:59 > 0:53:03into this room, you'd definitely say this is Ceri and Zaheed's place.

0:53:03 > 0:53:07What a fab result! I'm so pleased. They love the room.

0:53:07 > 0:53:09So, fabulous, well done, girls.

0:53:13 > 0:53:15And it's not over yet.

0:53:15 > 0:53:17Down on the south coast, the other house is

0:53:17 > 0:53:19still in the hands of amateurs.

0:53:21 > 0:53:25Homeowners Russell and Jo only liked one out of the two individual

0:53:25 > 0:53:28rooms, so I'm hoping this joint one nails it.

0:53:31 > 0:53:35Zyg and Sara worked well together to transform the plain old lounge

0:53:35 > 0:53:38into a glamorous colonial Caribbean living room.

0:53:39 > 0:53:41Sara's colourful wallpaper

0:53:41 > 0:53:45and furnishings sit side by side with Zyg's plantation blinds,

0:53:45 > 0:53:49his filigree work and the painting by his wife.

0:53:53 > 0:53:56- Hello.- Hello.

0:53:59 > 0:54:02So, was it quite tough working together?

0:54:02 > 0:54:03No, it was fun, actually.

0:54:03 > 0:54:06We sort of, like, we bantered a lot, you know what I mean?

0:54:06 > 0:54:08Sara hasn't got volume control.

0:54:09 > 0:54:11I think the whole room works really nicely.

0:54:11 > 0:54:15And it feels very homely in here and interesting.

0:54:15 > 0:54:18I mean, obviously, I'm not going to live here and it's up to the

0:54:18 > 0:54:22homeowners if they like it or not, so we have to hope they do.

0:54:22 > 0:54:23I really like it.

0:54:23 > 0:54:26I think you've done a really excellent job, both of you.

0:54:26 > 0:54:28- Thank you.- Thank you.- Well done.

0:54:29 > 0:54:31Here we go.

0:54:31 > 0:54:36I just hope Jo and Russell agree. I'd say it's a fairly bold design.

0:54:36 > 0:54:39- I'm nervous.- Nervous excited, but very, very nervous

0:54:39 > 0:54:42because I know they will have put their heart and souls into it.

0:54:42 > 0:54:44I know they will have worked so hard to get it right for us,

0:54:44 > 0:54:47but, obviously, they've got their tastes and we've got ours,

0:54:47 > 0:54:50so, you know, it might not be right.

0:54:50 > 0:54:53I've sent Zyg and Sara to hide in the kitchen to hear honest

0:54:53 > 0:54:55feedback first-hand.

0:54:59 > 0:55:05- Oh, my word. Hi, Celia.- Hello. - Hi Celia.- Oh, my God.

0:55:05 > 0:55:07I love it. I do absolutely love it.

0:55:07 > 0:55:09Absolutely amazing, yeah. Stunning.

0:55:09 > 0:55:11I feel like I'm going to cry.

0:55:12 > 0:55:13Oh, bless you.

0:55:13 > 0:55:16With relief, yeah. It's amazing.

0:55:16 > 0:55:19Glad you're happy.

0:55:19 > 0:55:23- Making me cry now. - Oh, wow! Yeah, it's lovely.

0:55:23 > 0:55:25Absolutely.

0:55:25 > 0:55:28- Don't mind the colours? - No, the colours are...

0:55:28 > 0:55:31No, it all works, it all works, it really does work.

0:55:31 > 0:55:34I mean, look, just the wood and, oh, yeah, definitely, definitely.

0:55:34 > 0:55:37The detailing, the shelves, the textures.

0:55:37 > 0:55:40It's bold. It's definitely got some boldness, but it's beautiful.

0:55:40 > 0:55:42- And the paper as well. - It's definitely beach-y, isn't it?

0:55:42 > 0:55:45- Yeah, yeah.- You love the paper? - Yeah, I do.- I love the paper.

0:55:45 > 0:55:47- I love it.- That paper's amazing.

0:55:47 > 0:55:50But, Russ, where's your beige gone, then?

0:55:50 > 0:55:53- Apart from the old...- Are you upset?

0:55:53 > 0:55:54You'll have to dress in beige now.

0:55:54 > 0:55:56Dress in beige, yeah.

0:55:56 > 0:56:00I don't miss the beige, you know, looking at this room now,

0:56:00 > 0:56:04whereas, you know, Captain Sensible and Mr Safe,

0:56:04 > 0:56:06it's kind of... the colours are amazing.

0:56:07 > 0:56:10Because you like it so much, I think it's about time

0:56:10 > 0:56:12you met the designers. Come on in.

0:56:15 > 0:56:20- Hi. Hello.- Thank you so much.

0:56:20 > 0:56:22It's so nice to meet you, finally.

0:56:22 > 0:56:25I feel like I've been through all your stuff.

0:56:25 > 0:56:31The family absolutely loved the living room, which is just amazing.

0:56:31 > 0:56:34So happy. What a great feeling.

0:56:34 > 0:56:37- Hello, nice to meet you. - Hi, Zyg, nice to meet you.

0:56:37 > 0:56:39Thank you. Thank you so much.

0:56:39 > 0:56:41I'm pleasantly surprised

0:56:41 > 0:56:45and I'm very happy that both the bits I've done have been a result.

0:56:45 > 0:56:48They both worked together really well on the joint room, so this

0:56:48 > 0:56:53is tough, but it has to be Zyg this week that's impressed me the most,

0:56:53 > 0:56:57because his children's room was amazing.

0:56:57 > 0:57:00Halfway through the week I was beginning to doubt whether

0:57:00 > 0:57:02I did like colour as much but I am fully back on loving colour.

0:57:02 > 0:57:06What a result. They loved it and I'm so thrilled.

0:57:06 > 0:57:08What a great way to end the day.

0:57:09 > 0:57:10Come in.

0:57:10 > 0:57:13Because, you know, I love that room, I thought both of them

0:57:13 > 0:57:14worked really well as a team.

0:57:14 > 0:57:18I could see both influences equally, which is really important.

0:57:19 > 0:57:22But the best thing is, Russ and Jo loved it. Fabulous.
