0:00:14 > 0:00:19- This is Dave.- Hi.- Dave owns a wooden ship called the Theseus.
0:00:19 > 0:00:25And that's Dave's wife. She doesn't like goodbyes. Dave and his crew...
0:00:25 > 0:00:26Ooh-arr!
0:00:26 > 0:00:31Yup, thank you. Dave and his crew are setting off on a long voyage.
0:00:31 > 0:00:34It's a tough voyage, with many storms and mishaps.
0:00:34 > 0:00:37And it gets really quite hard to keep the ship sailing
0:00:37 > 0:00:40and to stop bits of it falling into the water.
0:00:43 > 0:00:44Every time the ship is damaged,
0:00:44 > 0:00:47Dave takes the Theseus to George's shipyard.
0:00:47 > 0:00:50And George replaces the broken wooden bits
0:00:50 > 0:00:51with shiny, new metal ones.
0:00:53 > 0:00:54Bye!
0:00:57 > 0:01:00But there are many dangers, like Ollie the octopus,
0:01:00 > 0:01:02who does like a bit of fish and chips.
0:01:06 > 0:01:09And so, every few months of his journey, Dave heads back
0:01:09 > 0:01:13to see George and has any broken wooden bits replaced with metal.
0:01:13 > 0:01:16- Bye bye!- Bye!
0:01:16 > 0:01:17HE HUMS
0:01:17 > 0:01:22And each time the ship gets damaged, more metal parts are added.
0:01:22 > 0:01:27And so on and so on until eventually,
0:01:27 > 0:01:29every part of the Theseus has been replaced.
0:01:29 > 0:01:33The ship is now entirely metal, inside and out.
0:01:35 > 0:01:37When Dave gets home, his wife,
0:01:37 > 0:01:42who's been really missing Dave a great deal, is surprised.
0:01:42 > 0:01:45She wants to know why he's got a new ship.
0:01:45 > 0:01:47"I haven't got a new ship," says Dave.
0:01:48 > 0:01:51Dave's wife insists that it can't be the same ship.
0:01:51 > 0:01:53Dave insists that it is.
0:01:53 > 0:01:57This goes back and forth for what seems like an eternity.
0:01:58 > 0:02:00But Dave's wife won't budge.
0:02:00 > 0:02:03Your ship was wooden, and this ship is metal!
0:02:03 > 0:02:07- Nothing of the old ship remains. - What do you think?
0:02:21 > 0:02:24Dave and his wife haven't stopped arguing about whether
0:02:24 > 0:02:27it's the same ship when suddenly, over the horizon,
0:02:27 > 0:02:29a familiar shape appears.
0:02:29 > 0:02:34It's the Theseus, only made of wood! How did this happen?
0:02:36 > 0:02:40It turns out George always wanted his own ship.
0:02:40 > 0:02:43So, rather cleverly, he kept all the wooden bits
0:02:43 > 0:02:47that fell off the original Theseus and decided to rebuild it.
0:02:47 > 0:02:51It needed a lot of hard work and an awful lot of nails.
0:02:51 > 0:02:53But it looks very good, now he's finished.
0:02:54 > 0:02:58The minute she sees the ship, Dave's wife thinks it's Dave's ship,
0:02:58 > 0:03:02the Theseus. So what does this mean?
0:03:02 > 0:03:06They're both called the Theseus, and they both look the same.
0:03:06 > 0:03:09Well, except that one's made of wood and one's made of metal.
0:03:11 > 0:03:14It's all getting a bit confusing. Oh, dear!
0:03:28 > 0:03:31Now, this is all very well with ancient ships and whatnot,
0:03:31 > 0:03:34but what happens if we think about something a little closer to
0:03:34 > 0:03:37home, like... I don't know, you?
0:03:37 > 0:03:39You see, like Dave's ship,
0:03:39 > 0:03:42our bodies change and grow throughout our lives.
0:03:42 > 0:03:46We're born, we grow up into toddlers, then children...
0:03:46 > 0:03:48Hi!
0:03:48 > 0:03:52..And we keep growing into teenagers, then adults.
0:03:52 > 0:03:54And we continue changing our whole lives.
0:03:54 > 0:03:58Our hair grows and falls out, and more grows without us even noticing.
0:03:58 > 0:04:03We get a whole new set of teeth. Everything changes.
0:04:03 > 0:04:07So if every part of us gets replaced, too, like Dave's ship,
0:04:07 > 0:04:09then that raises a big question.
0:04:26 > 0:04:29Along a great river, there are two villages.
0:04:30 > 0:04:34The first one, way up river, is a farming village full of, well,
0:04:34 > 0:04:39farmers. Now, this village isn't a very happy place.
0:04:39 > 0:04:41There's never enough water to feed the crops,
0:04:41 > 0:04:43and the people are very hungry.
0:04:43 > 0:04:51Rotten crops, rumbling tums, bad tempers. You get the idea.
0:04:51 > 0:04:54However, some way down river, there's a fishing village full of,
0:04:54 > 0:04:57well, fisher-people.
0:04:57 > 0:05:00Now, they depend on the river for all their food,
0:05:00 > 0:05:05and they have lots of lovely fish to eat. But one day...
0:05:05 > 0:05:07Oh, no!
0:05:07 > 0:05:09They discover that their lovely fish-filled river
0:05:09 > 0:05:11has dried up completely.
0:05:11 > 0:05:16No water, nothing. No fish at all, not even a goldfish!
0:05:19 > 0:05:22With no fish to eat, people start to go hungry.
0:05:23 > 0:05:27And so, a fearless fisher-girl from the village sets off
0:05:27 > 0:05:30to find out why the river has dried up.
0:05:30 > 0:05:33Packing the last of the fish paste sandwiches,
0:05:33 > 0:05:36she follows the dry river all the way to the farmers' village.
0:05:39 > 0:05:44There, she meets a farmer boy. "Welcome to our village," he says.
0:05:44 > 0:05:45"It's a great place.
0:05:45 > 0:05:49"We have plenty to eat and our crops have lots of water,
0:05:49 > 0:05:50"all thanks to our dam."
0:05:53 > 0:05:59The fisher-girl is horrified. "You've stolen our water," she says.
0:06:00 > 0:06:01What do you think?
0:06:16 > 0:06:19The fisher-girl explains to the farmer boy how the dam
0:06:19 > 0:06:22has stopped the river flowing down to their village.
0:06:22 > 0:06:26She tells him all about her village going hungry
0:06:26 > 0:06:31because they have no more fish. The farmer boy feels bad.
0:06:31 > 0:06:35He hadn't thought about how this would affect his neighbours.
0:06:35 > 0:06:37And then he has an idea.
0:06:37 > 0:06:40Why don't the fisher-people just come and live with us?
0:06:40 > 0:06:44The fisher-girl isn't sure this will solve the problem.
0:06:44 > 0:06:45After all,
0:06:45 > 0:06:49the fisher-people have lived in their village for hundreds of years.
0:06:49 > 0:06:53Everything they do is based around fish and fishing.
0:06:53 > 0:06:55If the fisher-people come and live with the farmers,
0:06:55 > 0:06:59they'll have to change their entire way of life. Not only that -
0:06:59 > 0:07:03even if the fisher-people come to the farming village,
0:07:03 > 0:07:05will the farmers welcome them?
0:07:05 > 0:07:07It's an awful lot of new mouths to feed, for a start.
0:07:09 > 0:07:12Well, there are a lot of things to consider here.
0:07:30 > 0:07:34This is Ben. He's just walking along when...
0:07:34 > 0:07:35Oh, hang on!
0:07:35 > 0:07:42He's found something. It's a ring. It's not just any ring, though.
0:07:42 > 0:07:44It's a magic ring, a real,
0:07:44 > 0:07:49proper magic ring that makes you disappear when you put it on.
0:07:49 > 0:07:53So now... Ben? Err... is he still there?
0:07:53 > 0:07:54Ah!
0:07:54 > 0:07:57So now, Ben starts imagining the awesome things
0:07:57 > 0:07:59he can do with his new power.
0:07:59 > 0:08:01He could use the ring to help people,
0:08:01 > 0:08:04like stopping nasty burglars before they get away.
0:08:04 > 0:08:09- So kind of like a real superhero. - Hmm.- Maybe he needs a name.
0:08:12 > 0:08:15But then, he could also use it to play tricks on people,
0:08:15 > 0:08:19which might not be helpful, but it could be quite funny.
0:08:19 > 0:08:21Oooooo!
0:08:21 > 0:08:22HE CHUCKLES
0:08:37 > 0:08:41Soon, Ben gets bored just thinking about what he's going to do
0:08:41 > 0:08:44with the ring and decides to have a little bit of fun with it.
0:08:44 > 0:08:45HE CHUCKLES
0:08:45 > 0:08:49There's Sophie, having a lovely dolls' tea party.
0:08:49 > 0:08:54And then along comes Ben to wreak havoc with it!
0:08:54 > 0:08:55Woooooo!
0:08:55 > 0:08:56SHE SCREAMS
0:08:59 > 0:09:02Later on, Ben's just playing ball with Karim when...
0:09:06 > 0:09:07Uh-oh!
0:09:07 > 0:09:09Enter the magic ring again, which helps him disappear
0:09:09 > 0:09:12and cleverly avoid getting caught.
0:09:13 > 0:09:14Phew!
0:09:15 > 0:09:16Grrr!
0:09:25 > 0:09:28So Ben's become quite attached to being invisible,
0:09:28 > 0:09:30and he finds himself thinking
0:09:30 > 0:09:33he'd like one of those lovely, juicy apples.
0:09:34 > 0:09:35Mmmm!
0:09:35 > 0:09:36He could just steal one.
0:09:36 > 0:09:40And if he's invisible, he can't get caught, can he?
0:09:40 > 0:09:44But Sophie has seen what he's up to, and ever so quietly,
0:09:44 > 0:09:47she creeps up on him and catches him in the act.
0:09:48 > 0:09:49Uh-oh!
0:09:49 > 0:09:53Sophie says, "Why don't you use your power to do good things?"
0:09:53 > 0:09:56She tells him that doing good things makes her feel happy,
0:09:56 > 0:09:59and that we should all do good things because,
0:09:59 > 0:10:00well, because it's good.
0:10:02 > 0:10:03What do you think?
0:10:21 > 0:10:27Sophie, Ben and Karim are going on a quest. Adventure! Excitement! Peril!
0:10:27 > 0:10:30You know, all the usual questy stuff.
0:10:30 > 0:10:34Their plan is to find the mysterious golden bird which lives
0:10:34 > 0:10:35deep in the forest.
0:10:35 > 0:10:38BIRD SQUEALS
0:10:39 > 0:10:43Unfortunately, they haven't actually set off yet because they've spent
0:10:43 > 0:10:47the past two hours arguing about who's going to carry what.
0:10:47 > 0:10:49Karim has hurt his arm,
0:10:49 > 0:10:52so he doesn't think he should carry too much.
0:10:52 > 0:10:55In fact, he's going to struggle to carry anything.
0:10:59 > 0:11:02Sophie is the smallest, so she thinks she should carry less
0:11:02 > 0:11:05than the others, especially Ben, who's much bigger.
0:11:05 > 0:11:08- Yoo hoo! Wa ha!- Yippee! Yippee!
0:11:09 > 0:11:13But Ben is seriously unhappy about carrying more stuff
0:11:13 > 0:11:16because he's only brought a tiny amount.
0:11:16 > 0:11:20He thinks he can't help being bigger.
0:11:20 > 0:11:23Why should he have to carry other people's stuff?
0:11:23 > 0:11:24Hmph!
0:11:24 > 0:11:28So how are they going to sort it out and actually find the golden bird,
0:11:28 > 0:11:31now that they're not even talking to each other?
0:11:44 > 0:11:49Hours later, and they've still not decided who's carrying what.
0:11:49 > 0:11:51Well, now, it's lunchtime,
0:11:51 > 0:11:53and Sophie's tummy is making some rather strange noises.
0:11:53 > 0:11:55HER TUMMY RUMBLES
0:11:55 > 0:11:58She says they should eat before they carry on,
0:11:58 > 0:12:02- and suggests they all share out their lunches.- Yay!- Yeah!- Yeah!
0:12:02 > 0:12:04Karim has brought a pretty decent spread,
0:12:04 > 0:12:06lots of tasty stuff to keep them going.
0:12:07 > 0:12:11But Ben has only brought what he can afford, which isn't as much.
0:12:13 > 0:12:15And Sophie's brought, well, loads.
0:12:15 > 0:12:17Yay! Woo hoo!
0:12:17 > 0:12:20Karim's not sure about sharing when he's brought more than Ben.
0:12:20 > 0:12:23But then he has an idea.
0:12:23 > 0:12:25Maybe Ben could earn some extra food
0:12:25 > 0:12:28if he agrees to carry more on the journey.
0:12:28 > 0:12:31But Ben doesn't think it's fair to make him do all the work,
0:12:31 > 0:12:34just because he hasn't got as much food.
0:12:34 > 0:12:38This is going to be tricky and... Oh, dear!
0:12:38 > 0:12:40It looks like they've spent so long arguing,
0:12:40 > 0:12:43the bird has flown off on a quest of its own.
0:12:43 > 0:12:46Oh, look! He's left them a little present!
0:13:05 > 0:13:08On the banks of a river sits a scorpion.
0:13:08 > 0:13:10This scorpion has got lost,
0:13:10 > 0:13:13and she's separated from her family by a huge river.
0:13:15 > 0:13:18Now, you may not know this, but scorpions can't swim.
0:13:20 > 0:13:23So she can't cross it. She's stuck.
0:13:23 > 0:13:24- Ribbit!- Ooh!
0:13:24 > 0:13:27At that moment, a frog passes by.
0:13:27 > 0:13:28Ribbit ribbit!
0:13:28 > 0:13:32Now, of course, frogs can swim, so she asks the frog for help.
0:13:34 > 0:13:37"Ha ha ha," says the frog. "I don't think so!
0:13:37 > 0:13:41"Scorpions and frogs are deadly enemies. Scorpions sting frogs.
0:13:41 > 0:13:45"When we're halfway across, you'll sting me."
0:13:45 > 0:13:49"Why would I do that?" says the scorpion. "It makes no sense.
0:13:49 > 0:13:52"If I sting you, I won't get across the river to my family."
0:13:53 > 0:13:55Mmmm...
0:13:55 > 0:13:58But the scorpion can see that the frog's still not sure.
0:13:58 > 0:14:02And so she says, "I promise I won't sting you." What do you think?
0:14:12 > 0:14:15Eventually, after a lot of pleading from the scorpion,
0:14:15 > 0:14:19the frog agrees to carry her across the river.
0:14:19 > 0:14:22Now, what looks like a short distance to you
0:14:22 > 0:14:25is quite a long journey for a frog, especially
0:14:25 > 0:14:27when you've got someone your own size on your back
0:14:27 > 0:14:29and it's a scorpion.
0:14:29 > 0:14:30Woo hoo!
0:14:32 > 0:14:38- Halfway across the river, the frog feels sharp pain on his head.- Ow!
0:14:38 > 0:14:39The scorpion has stung him!
0:14:41 > 0:14:46"Why did you do that?" screams the frog. "Now we'll both drown!"
0:14:46 > 0:14:51"I can't help it," says the scorpion. "Scorpions sting frogs.
0:14:51 > 0:14:54"It's in my nature."
0:14:54 > 0:14:59And with that, both the scorpion and the frog sink down into the river.
0:15:14 > 0:15:17That's all very well for frogs and scorpions,
0:15:17 > 0:15:20but what does this have to do with humans?
0:15:20 > 0:15:24Well, let's take Karim as an example.
0:15:24 > 0:15:29Karim's always been a bit, well, careless with other people's things.
0:15:31 > 0:15:34Ah! Yeah!
0:15:34 > 0:15:36Karim's best friend, Sophie,
0:15:36 > 0:15:39has a telescope that he really wants to borrow.
0:15:40 > 0:15:46The thing is, Sophie's not sure. She knows Karim is careless.
0:15:46 > 0:15:49But he promises to be careful with it.
0:15:49 > 0:15:53So eventually, she decides to lend him the telescope.
0:15:53 > 0:15:59Karim heads off, carrying the telescope extra carefully.
0:15:59 > 0:16:00Phew!
0:16:00 > 0:16:02He spends the evening looking at the stars,
0:16:02 > 0:16:05making sure he's being extra careful.
0:16:08 > 0:16:12And the next day, on his way to return it to Sophie, he sees a group
0:16:12 > 0:16:16of little baby scorpions looking cute on the bank of the river.
0:16:20 > 0:16:26Uh-oh! Looks like Karim might not have been extra careful this time.
0:16:26 > 0:16:27Hi!
0:16:28 > 0:16:32And that means he has broken his promise to Sophie.
0:16:32 > 0:16:34She's probably going to be rather upset.
