0:01:39 > 0:01:42Explorers away!
0:01:42 > 0:01:47William sets off to meet Charlie, exploring Weymouth as he goes.
0:01:47 > 0:01:52There are lots of tourists walking on the esplanade beside the beach.
0:01:52 > 0:01:56They're taking in the fresh sea air
0:01:56 > 0:02:00and looking at different shops and stalls on the seafront.
0:02:00 > 0:02:06William has found a telescope, which he can use to look out to sea.
0:02:06 > 0:02:09The telescope makes the boat look much closer.
0:02:09 > 0:02:13William carries on his journey.
0:02:16 > 0:02:21Look, adventurers! The cheesephone has led us to a restaurant. Yummy!
0:02:21 > 0:02:23Hello, William!
0:02:23 > 0:02:27- Pleased to squeak you, Charlie. - Pleased to squeak you too, William.
0:02:27 > 0:02:32Charlie explains that his mum and dad work in the restaurant
0:02:32 > 0:02:34and he invites William to help out.
0:02:34 > 0:02:37Right! That sounds like a real adventure!
0:02:37 > 0:02:39BOTH: Explorers away!
0:02:39 > 0:02:41- This is the restaurant!- Wow!
0:02:41 > 0:02:44Charlie shows William the dining area,
0:02:44 > 0:02:46where all the customers come to eat.
0:02:46 > 0:02:52He also points out the kitchen, where his dad prepares the food.
0:02:52 > 0:02:55Charlie then shows William a menu.
0:02:55 > 0:02:59He tells him that it lists all the different dishes available to eat.
0:02:59 > 0:03:02There's an awful lot of fish on here.
0:03:02 > 0:03:05- Yes, because we're a fish restaurant.- Oh!
0:03:05 > 0:03:09William notices something missing at the top of the menu.
0:03:09 > 0:03:12Fish of the day? There's nothing written there.
0:03:12 > 0:03:17- Because it hasn't been caught yet. - Caught? From the sea?- Yes!
0:03:17 > 0:03:22- I'd love to see how that happens. - OK, let's go and find out!
0:03:22 > 0:03:27Charlie takes William down to the harbour.
0:03:27 > 0:03:31- This is Brett, he catches our fish for us.- Hi, Brett!
0:03:31 > 0:03:35- Can we come and find out how you catch the fish?- Of course you can.
0:03:35 > 0:03:39- Come on down and maybe you can have a go too.- Fantastic!
0:03:39 > 0:03:41BOTH: Explorers away!
0:03:41 > 0:03:44William and Charlie put on their life jackets
0:03:44 > 0:03:47and set off for the fishing trip with Brett.
0:03:47 > 0:03:52On their way, they see lots of boats of different shapes and sizes.
0:03:52 > 0:03:56Lifeboats, fishing boats,
0:03:56 > 0:03:59old-fashioned sailing boats.
0:04:01 > 0:04:05Even huge ferry boats.
0:04:05 > 0:04:10Brett navigates out of the harbour walls and into the open sea.
0:04:15 > 0:04:20He uses a compass and a computerised map to help him find his way.
0:04:22 > 0:04:25What time of day do you go fishing?
0:04:25 > 0:04:28That depends on the tide normally.
0:04:28 > 0:04:31Brett tells William that sometimes he sets off
0:04:31 > 0:04:34as early as four in the morning to catch his fish.
0:04:34 > 0:04:38And sometimes he fishes in the middle of the afternoon.
0:04:38 > 0:04:43It all depends on the type of fish he's trying to catch and the tides.
0:04:43 > 0:04:45How do you find the fish?
0:04:45 > 0:04:47Every time I catch a lot of fish, I put a mark on there,
0:04:47 > 0:04:51and then I'll go there the following year.
0:04:51 > 0:04:54I build up a map of where the fish visit.
0:04:54 > 0:04:58The map shows William the fishing spot the boat is going to.
0:04:58 > 0:05:02William and Charlie set out to find it.
0:05:06 > 0:05:08There's some seagulls.
0:05:08 > 0:05:11You get a lot of seagulls near fishing boats
0:05:11 > 0:05:14because they like to eat fish.
0:05:14 > 0:05:17- Shall we start fishing, then? - Yes!- Sounds good.
0:05:17 > 0:05:19This is a fishing rod we use.
0:05:19 > 0:05:23And sometimes we use bait to catch different fish.
0:05:23 > 0:05:27Bait is what a fisherman puts at the end of his rod to attract the fish.
0:05:27 > 0:05:31Sometimes they use little fish as bait, like this one.
0:05:31 > 0:05:35But we're going to use feathers and see what we catch with those.
0:05:35 > 0:05:40Today, William and Charlie are using feathers as bait.
0:05:40 > 0:05:42What sort of fish like feathers?
0:05:42 > 0:05:46- Well, mackerel like feathers and so do pollock.- Ooh.- And gurnard.
0:05:46 > 0:05:50Brett helps Charlie and William lower the feathers into the sea.
0:05:50 > 0:05:56OK, let the line down. That's it. Now lock it off.
0:05:56 > 0:05:59You're a natural adventurer, Charlie!
0:05:59 > 0:06:01Then they move the rod up and down.
0:06:01 > 0:06:04This makes the feathers dance in the water,
0:06:04 > 0:06:06helping the fish to find them.
0:06:06 > 0:06:11- I thought fishermen always fished with nets!- A lot of them still do,
0:06:11 > 0:06:15but I prefer rod and line fishing, cos it's more sustainable.
0:06:15 > 0:06:16- Ooh.- What does sustainable mean?
0:06:16 > 0:06:22With sustainable fishing, every fish that is caught is measured.
0:06:22 > 0:06:26If the fish is too small, it's thrown back into the ocean.
0:06:26 > 0:06:29This way, the smaller fish can grow,
0:06:29 > 0:06:34and fishermen will still be able to find plenty of fish in the future.
0:06:34 > 0:06:36Let's fish sustainably, Charlie.
0:06:36 > 0:06:40- What sort of fish do you catch? - It depends on the time of year.
0:06:40 > 0:06:44We're in September, and we're catching bass and flatfish,
0:06:44 > 0:06:46like turbot and brill.
0:06:46 > 0:06:48- Can you catch a shark?- You can do.
0:06:48 > 0:06:52Brett says there's a harmless type of shark, a dogfish,
0:06:52 > 0:06:54living in the waters around Weymouth.
0:06:54 > 0:06:59- They swim along the bottom, hoovering it up.- Do they go, "Woof"?
0:06:59 > 0:07:00They don't!
0:07:00 > 0:07:02- I think I've got a bite.- Quick!
0:07:02 > 0:07:06- Charlie's got a bite on the end of his fishing line!- I got one!
0:07:06 > 0:07:09- Really?- Yes!- Brilliant! - Quick!- Wind it up.
0:07:09 > 0:07:11Charlie turns the handle of his rod
0:07:11 > 0:07:14to pull the fishing line out of the water.
0:07:14 > 0:07:17Look, he's caught something!
0:07:17 > 0:07:20- It's wiggling like mad! - Oh, what an adventure!
0:07:20 > 0:07:22Here's some mackerel!
0:07:22 > 0:07:27Wow! Squeakalicious! Two of them! That might be our fish of the day!
0:07:27 > 0:07:30Brett measure Charlie's mackerel on his fish ruler.
0:07:30 > 0:07:35They can only keep the fish if they measure more than 20 centimetres.
0:07:35 > 0:07:38- How big is he, Charlie? - 26 centimetres.
0:07:38 > 0:07:41The legal limit is 20, so we can eat that one.
0:07:41 > 0:07:45- They've caught their fish of the day.- Well done, Charlie!
0:07:45 > 0:07:48Put it in the ice box and let's fish again.
0:07:48 > 0:07:50Back at the restaurant,
0:07:50 > 0:07:54Charlie and William have put their mackerel on the menu.
0:07:54 > 0:07:57William says he can't wait to eat his fishy feast.
0:07:57 > 0:08:00- Well, that's lucky, because your lunch is here.- Thank you!
0:08:00 > 0:08:05We've got the fish of the day! It's the mackerel we caught earlier!
0:08:05 > 0:08:07Then tuck in!
0:08:07 > 0:08:10HE CHOMPS
0:08:12 > 0:08:17Oh! Oh, thanks, Charlie. I've had an amazing adventure in your restaurant!
0:08:17 > 0:08:23- I've had an amazing adventure too. I brought you a present.- Oh! Wow!
0:08:23 > 0:08:27A fishing rod! Now I can go fishing in the bath!
0:08:27 > 0:08:32- Hey, squeak you later, Charlie. - Squeak you later too, William.
0:08:33 > 0:08:36Can you remember where William went today?
0:08:36 > 0:08:40William visited the seaside town of Weymouth.
0:08:40 > 0:08:45He met his friend Charlie, whose mum and dad own a restaurant.
0:08:45 > 0:08:48William and Charlie went on a fishing boat.
0:08:48 > 0:08:52Can you remember what sort of fish they caught?
0:08:52 > 0:08:55That's right - mackerel!
0:08:55 > 0:08:59Then Charlie's dad cooked William a fishy feast.
0:09:01 > 0:09:03It was squeakalicious!
0:09:04 > 0:09:07Time to fly, explorers!
0:09:07 > 0:09:11We're off on another adventure!
0:09:11 > 0:09:13See you soon, William!
