1:01:11 > 1:01:15Look, I've got a message coming through on my Cheesephone.
1:01:17 > 1:01:21Hello, William, I'm Harry and this is my sister, Sophie!
1:01:21 > 1:01:23We're going on a canal adventure.
1:01:23 > 1:01:25Hello, William!
1:01:25 > 1:01:28That looks like an amazing adventure.
1:01:28 > 1:01:30Lock the location, Cheesephone.
1:01:32 > 1:01:36The map shows William where to meet Sophie and Harry.
1:01:38 > 1:01:42Explorers away!
1:01:42 > 1:01:46William makes his way to meet his new friends on board
1:01:46 > 1:01:49a special boat, called a narrowboat.
1:01:49 > 1:01:54Ah! This must be the place.
1:01:54 > 1:01:56Pleased to squeak you, Sophie and Harry.
1:01:56 > 1:01:59Pleased to squeak you, William.
1:01:59 > 1:02:02- Is this your boat?- Yes.
1:02:02 > 1:02:07How exciting! Explorers away!
1:02:09 > 1:02:12A narrow boat is a boat that is long and thin.
1:02:12 > 1:02:16It can be used for holidays or as a home.
1:02:16 > 1:02:21Inside, you can find a kitchen, beds, cupboards,
1:02:21 > 1:02:24even a toilet and shower.
1:02:24 > 1:02:27Cheesephone, show our journey along the canal.
1:02:35 > 1:02:37The explorers untie their boat
1:02:37 > 1:02:42and set off on their adventure down the Birmingham and Worcester canal.
1:02:42 > 1:02:45All aboard!
1:02:51 > 1:02:55A canal is a path of water that boats can travel along.
1:02:55 > 1:03:00Canals look a bit like rivers but there's a big difference.
1:03:00 > 1:03:05Rivers are natural areas of water whereas canals are built by people.
1:03:07 > 1:03:09What kind of boats are they?
1:03:09 > 1:03:10They're canal boats.
1:03:10 > 1:03:13They are! Just like this one!
1:03:13 > 1:03:14- Yeah.- Hee, hee!
1:03:16 > 1:03:19Along his journey, William notices a path,
1:03:19 > 1:03:22but it is only on one side of the canal.
1:03:22 > 1:03:25This is called a towpath.
1:03:25 > 1:03:29What can you tell me about towpaths, Cheesephone?
1:03:29 > 1:03:32Canals were built to take goods from place to place,
1:03:32 > 1:03:36many years ago before cars and trains had been invented.
1:03:36 > 1:03:38The boats didn't have engines.
1:03:38 > 1:03:42Instead, they were pulled along by horses.
1:03:42 > 1:03:45The horses used to walk on the towpath
1:03:45 > 1:03:48as they towed the canal boats.
1:03:48 > 1:03:53That's why every canal has a towpath running along one side of it.
1:03:53 > 1:03:58Oh, look, Sophie's running along the tow path.
1:03:58 > 1:04:03Sophie! She's running in a race with the boat! Hee, hee!
1:04:06 > 1:04:10Along the canal, William spots a fisherman,
1:04:10 > 1:04:14a train and even some animals.
1:04:14 > 1:04:18Oh, look! Horses!
1:04:20 > 1:04:23- What's that?- A tunnel.
1:04:23 > 1:04:28Tunnels allow narrow boats to travel under large areas of land.
1:04:28 > 1:04:31It looks very dark inside that tunnel.
1:04:31 > 1:04:33Here we go!
1:04:35 > 1:04:41Look! It looks ever so dark.
1:04:41 > 1:04:43I know!
1:04:43 > 1:04:46Harry listen to our voices.
1:04:46 > 1:04:50- Hello!- Hi!
1:04:50 > 1:04:55- Can you hear me?- Yes, I can!
1:04:55 > 1:04:58Look up at the ceiling.
1:04:58 > 1:05:02- It's all gooey. - It's all gooey and mucky!
1:05:02 > 1:05:04I can hear the sound of the water.
1:05:04 > 1:05:06It's dripping!
1:05:06 > 1:05:09Ha! I got a drip on my whiskers.
1:05:09 > 1:05:12Did it tickle?
1:05:12 > 1:05:15- It did! Did a drip fall on you? - No, not yet.
1:05:18 > 1:05:21Wow! That was really cool!
1:05:26 > 1:05:29William notices there are bridges too.
1:05:29 > 1:05:34Some that are for people to cross, others for cars and lorries.
1:05:35 > 1:05:38It looks like the bridge goes under the water, doesn't it?
1:05:40 > 1:05:43Yes, because that's its reflection.
1:05:43 > 1:05:45It is a reflection.
1:05:48 > 1:05:49Sophie, what's that?
1:05:49 > 1:05:53It's a lock. We're going to open it.
1:05:53 > 1:05:55- Are we going through it?- Yeah.
1:05:55 > 1:05:58Ha, that is really mousey marvellous.
1:06:01 > 1:06:05The explorers steer their boat into a lock.
1:06:05 > 1:06:08A lock is a special system that allows a canal boat
1:06:08 > 1:06:11to pass from one part of a canal to another.
1:06:15 > 1:06:17Once the boat is inside the lock,
1:06:17 > 1:06:20William helps the adventurers to close the gate.
1:06:22 > 1:06:25Water is then drained from the lock.
1:06:25 > 1:06:30As the lock empties, the water level lowers, along with the boat.
1:06:30 > 1:06:34Once it has reached the same level as the water on the other side
1:06:34 > 1:06:39of the canal, the boat is then able to continue its journey.
1:06:42 > 1:06:45The gates are opening.
1:06:45 > 1:06:48You should never go near a lock without a grown-up,
1:06:48 > 1:06:50because it can be very dangerous.
1:06:51 > 1:06:53Through we go!
1:07:01 > 1:07:05The boat slowly makes its way down the canal towards Worcester.
1:07:05 > 1:07:10On the way, William notices the landscape around him change.
1:07:10 > 1:07:15He sees lots of people, houses and factories.
1:07:16 > 1:07:19Sophie, it's getting a bit dark.
1:07:19 > 1:07:23- Shall we stop for the night? - Good idea.
1:07:23 > 1:07:26- Where are we going to stop? - I think there!
1:07:26 > 1:07:29Good idea!
1:07:29 > 1:07:31I'm feeling pretty tired.
1:07:31 > 1:07:34HE YAWNS
1:07:34 > 1:07:37The explorers find a perfect spot to moor the boat
1:07:37 > 1:07:40after a long day on the canal.
1:07:40 > 1:07:44Tonight, the explorers are going to sleep on the narrow boat.
1:07:44 > 1:07:46Night, night, William!
1:07:49 > 1:07:50HE YAWNS
1:07:50 > 1:07:57Morning! A new day, a new lock.
1:07:57 > 1:08:01William finally reaches the last lock on the canal
1:08:01 > 1:08:04that opens to the River Severn.
1:08:04 > 1:08:06Wow!
1:08:06 > 1:08:09On the river, William sees Worcester Cathedral,
1:08:09 > 1:08:14ferries and even a rowing boat.
1:08:14 > 1:08:18- What is it?- Swans.
1:08:18 > 1:08:20Swans!
1:08:20 > 1:08:22Ah! They're beautiful!
1:08:25 > 1:08:27After their adventure on the river,
1:08:27 > 1:08:32the explorers head back to the canal where they tie up their boat.
1:08:36 > 1:08:41Travelling about on the canals has been so much fun with you two.
1:08:41 > 1:08:45I've really enjoyed being part of your crew, Sophie.
1:08:45 > 1:08:48I've got a present for you. It's a sailor's hat.
1:08:48 > 1:08:51A present! A sailor's hat!
1:08:56 > 1:08:59Ah! It's mousey marvellous!
1:08:59 > 1:09:03OK, shipmates. Squeak you later!

1:09:13 > 1:09:16Can you remember what they travelled on?
1:09:16 > 1:09:20They travelled on a narrowboat down the canal.
1:09:20 > 1:09:28On their journey they saw a tunnel, bridges, even a lock.
1:09:28 > 1:09:30At the end of their adventure,
1:09:30 > 1:09:35Sophie and Harry gave William a sailor's hat to remember his trip.
