0:00:12 > 0:00:14He hired me as his singer.

0:00:15 > 0:00:18In 1958, we got married,

0:00:18 > 0:00:25and we had a long and successful productive career together.

0:00:26 > 0:00:30Sadly he died this year

0:00:30 > 0:00:38and the world...not only the world but, I think, the family first

0:00:38 > 0:00:43were at a loss as to what to do without him,

0:00:43 > 0:00:46especially me, as we were joined at the hip.

0:00:46 > 0:00:50He was an amazing man,

0:00:50 > 0:00:56and tonight, I think we would like to show from the BBC archives

0:02:07 > 0:02:11What is the secret to keeping a band together as long as you do?

0:02:11 > 0:02:14You've got to have a gimmick, Humphrey.

0:02:14 > 0:02:18The one I use... I use a gimmick.

0:13:38 > 0:13:41APPLAUSE

0:13:42 > 0:13:45The idea is that it's a bit of a take-off

0:13:45 > 0:13:48on Scrooge being visited by the three ghosts

0:13:48 > 0:13:51of jazz... of Christmas past, present and future.

0:13:51 > 0:13:54We've altered it to jazz past, present and future,

0:13:54 > 0:13:57and used an old Christmas carol.

0:13:57 > 0:13:59Dick, you play at B, a solo,

0:13:59 > 0:14:04keep it mainly round the melody, sort of Armstrongian and trad.

0:14:04 > 0:14:07Gus, you play at D,

0:14:07 > 0:14:12keep it fairly straightforward and so it might be mistaken as mainstream.

0:14:14 > 0:14:19And Ken Wheeler, G,

0:14:19 > 0:14:23Ken Wheeler at G, can you blind us with science?

0:14:33 > 0:14:35Yes. I'll take this as a rough, John.
