:22:45. > :22:48.Caesar Augustus issued a decree

:22:48. > :22:52.for a census of the whole world to be taken.

:22:52. > :22:55.This census - the first -

:22:55. > :22:59.took place while Quirinius was governor of Syria,

:22:59. > :23:03.and everyone went to his own town to be registered.

:23:03. > :23:08.So Joseph set out from the town of Nazareth in Galilee

:23:08. > :23:12.and travelled up to Judaea, to the town of David called Bethlehem,

:23:13. > :23:15.since he was of David's House and line,

:23:15. > :23:20.in order to be registered together with Mary, his betrothed,

:23:20. > :23:22.who was with child.

:23:23. > :23:27.While they were there the time came for her have her child,

:23:27. > :23:32.and she gave birth to a son, her first born.

:23:32. > :23:36.She wrapped him in swaddling clothes, and laid him in a manger

:23:36. > :23:41.because there was no room for them at the inn.

:23:41. > :23:44.In the countryside close by

:23:44. > :23:46.there were shepherds who lived in the fields

:23:46. > :23:51.and took it in turns to watch their flocks during the night.

:23:51. > :23:54.The angel of the Lord appeared to them

:23:54. > :23:57.and the glory of the Lord shone round them.

:23:57. > :24:03.They were terrified, but the angel said, "Do not be afraid.

:24:03. > :24:07."Listen, I bring you news of great joy,

:24:07. > :24:10."a joy to be shared by the whole people.

:24:11. > :24:15."Today in the town of David a saviour has been born to you;

:24:15. > :24:18."he is Christ the Lord.

:24:19. > :24:21."And here is a sign for you:

:24:21. > :24:24."you will find a baby wrapped in swaddling clothes

:24:24. > :24:28."and lying in a manger."

:24:28. > :24:30.And suddenly with the angel

:24:30. > :24:33.there was a great throng of the heavenly host,

:24:33. > :24:35.praising God and singing:

:24:35. > :24:38."Glory to God in the highest heaven,

:24:54. > :25:04.ORGAN FANFARE

:25:04. > :25:36.

:25:36. > :25:40.My dear brothers and sisters,

:25:40. > :25:44.when we look back at the news headlines over the past year,

:25:44. > :25:47.many of them have been anything but good.

:25:47. > :25:50.There has been a continuous stream of bad news -

:25:50. > :25:53.from the ongoing tragedy of the war in Afghanistan

:25:53. > :25:56.to the civil disturbances and deaths

:25:56. > :26:00.in countries involved in the so-called "Arab Spring".

:26:00. > :26:05.We have witnessed a series of natural disasters -

:26:05. > :26:10.earthquakes and floods in Japan and Asia, famine in East Africa,

:26:10. > :26:13.and in this past week

:26:13. > :26:15.more devastating floods in the Philippines

:26:15. > :26:21.and yet another earthquake in Christchurch, New Zealand.

:26:21. > :26:25.These natural disasters have occurred in the shadow

:26:25. > :26:30.of the deepening financial crisis and global economic recession

:26:30. > :26:34.which has brought its own suffering to so many -

:26:34. > :26:38.growing unemployment, especially amongst the young,

:26:38. > :26:44.rising prices and a growing gap between the rich and the poor.

:26:44. > :26:48.And in England last summer

:26:48. > :26:53.we saw appalling scenes of rioting, violence and destruction

:26:53. > :26:59.by a small number of criminals and disaffected young people.

:26:59. > :27:02.The list could go on!

:27:02. > :27:06.Yet in the midst of this bleak and depressing picture

:27:06. > :27:08.we have also witnessed

:27:08. > :27:12.some wonderful examples of light and hope.

:27:12. > :27:15.Alerted to the famine in Africa,

:27:15. > :27:17.within weeks the people of this country

:27:17. > :27:21.donated more than 40 million to help the starving,

:27:21. > :27:24.and more recently,

:27:24. > :27:29.another 27 million for the BBC's Children in Need appeal

:27:29. > :27:35.despite the severe economic difficulties we all face.

:27:35. > :27:38.Following the riots here in London,

:27:38. > :27:42.we saw local communities spontaneously getting together

:27:42. > :27:45.to help clear up the damage

:27:45. > :27:49.and offering comfort and help to the victims.

:27:49. > :27:53.And many of us will have experienced acts of goodness and kindness

:27:53. > :27:56.at a more personal level -

:27:56. > :28:00.in our families and in our neighbourhoods day by day.

:28:00. > :28:04.So despite all the gloom and anxiety,

:28:04. > :28:09.the light and goodness of the human spirit has continued to shine out

:28:09. > :28:12.in the midst of adversity.

:28:12. > :28:15.Those acts of good neighbourliness remind us

:28:15. > :28:20.that although we human beings can be selfish and self-seeking,

:28:20. > :28:25.our human nature is basically good.

:28:25. > :28:29.And as we celebrate this wonderful feast of the Incarnation,

:28:29. > :28:33.we see why that is.

:28:33. > :28:38.For tonight we rejoice in the fact that the almighty and merciful God,

:28:38. > :28:41.who created us in his own image and likeness,

:28:41. > :28:48.reached out in love and became one like us in all things but sin.

:28:48. > :28:53.Isaiah prophesied that unique moment in history -

:28:53. > :28:57."The people that walked in darkness has seen a great light,

:28:57. > :29:01."on those who live in a land of deep shadow,

:29:01. > :29:03."a light has shone...

:29:03. > :29:06."for there is a child born for us,

:29:06. > :29:10."a son given to us."

:29:10. > :29:13.On the night that Christ was born,

:29:13. > :29:16.Luke tells us that the angel appeared to the shepherds and said,

:29:16. > :29:18."Do not be afraid.

:29:18. > :29:21."Listen, I bring you news of great joy,

:29:21. > :29:24."a joy to be shared by the whole people.

:29:24. > :29:29."Today in the town of David a saviour has been born to you,

:29:29. > :29:34."he is Christ the Lord."

:29:34. > :29:36.He is, in the words of St John,

:29:36. > :29:39."a light that shines in the dark,

:29:39. > :29:43."a light that darkness could not overpower",

:29:43. > :29:48.because the truth is that in that vulnerable, new-born child,

:29:48. > :29:51."We see our God made visible

:29:52. > :29:57."and so are caught up in the God we cannot see."

:29:57. > :30:02.He came to save us from our self-centredness and isolation,

:30:02. > :30:05.and to show us through his own example

:30:05. > :30:10.how to reach out to others in that love which is always life-giving.

:30:10. > :30:13.He came to meet us where we are,

:30:13. > :30:17.and immersed himself fully in our confused and messy world,

:30:17. > :30:22.asking us to open our hearts to welcome him.

:30:22. > :30:25.Reflecting on that

:30:25. > :30:28.reminded me of the famous painting by Holman Hunt

:30:28. > :30:31.entitled Christ The Light Of The World.

:30:31. > :30:34.In that painting,

:30:34. > :30:38.Christ is depicted standing in the darkness of the night,

:30:38. > :30:42.with a lantern in his hand, knocking at a door.

:30:42. > :30:46.The door is covered by climbing plants and brambles,

:30:46. > :30:50.and clearly hasn't been opened for a very long time.

:30:50. > :30:54.And when you look more closely at the door,

:30:54. > :30:57.you see that there is no handle on it.

:30:57. > :31:00.Was this an oversight by the artist, a mistake?

:31:00. > :31:03.No, it wasn't.

:31:03. > :31:05.It was a deliberate omission,

:31:05. > :31:07.because Holman Hunt's insight

:31:07. > :31:11.was based on the words of the Book of Revelation,

:31:11. > :31:14.Christ "stands at the door and knocks".

:31:14. > :31:19.He longs to come in, but waits patiently to be admitted,

:31:19. > :31:25.because the door to our hearts can only be opened from the inside.

:31:25. > :31:31.So, if there are times when we feel afraid to approach God,

:31:31. > :31:36.through guilt, through apprehension, or feelings of unworthiness,

:31:36. > :31:39.we need to take to heart again
