0:02:19 > 0:02:24Lots of international celebrities, and we're going all over the world to find our music as well.

0:02:24 > 0:02:28Before we start travelling, I'd like to go a little way back into my youth,

0:02:28 > 0:02:31to the day I won three competitions in Ireland.

0:02:31 > 0:02:36When I was a little boy I won the local flute band championship competition

0:02:36 > 0:02:40for the ages of ten to 13, 13 to 16, and the all-Ireland open.

0:02:40 > 0:02:43And the tune I had to play for the all-Ireland piece

0:02:43 > 0:02:47was the best of all three - the Melody in F by Anton Rubinstein -

0:02:47 > 0:02:52and I'd like to play it for you now, with Calvin Simmons and the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra.

0:05:59 > 0:06:02with whom I was competing in two of the classes as a boy in Ireland,

0:06:02 > 0:06:06and now I'm going to play for you The Entertainer,

0:06:08 > 0:06:13If you think there's anything worse than one recorder, you're quite wrong. Just listen to this.

0:09:27 > 0:09:31and have all travelled down here especially for the programme.

0:09:35 > 0:09:37Well, I don't really know exactly, Jim,

0:09:37 > 0:09:41but there's quite a few recorder players in Manchester.

0:09:41 > 0:09:47But they do have a very healthy music scene in town

0:09:47 > 0:09:52and we've brought along today a wind band from various schools

0:09:52 > 0:09:55to play Sousa March.

0:13:16 > 0:13:19he thought he was writing great master-works.

0:13:19 > 0:13:22In fact he did, but all he turned out were marches

0:13:22 > 0:13:24but he made a very, very good job of them.

0:13:24 > 0:13:29I'd like to go right now to one of the truly great musicians of the 20th century - Claude Debussy.

0:13:31 > 0:13:36one of his most beautifully haunting melodies - La Plus Que Lente.

0:19:28 > 0:19:33of the Mendelssohn Violin Concerto in E minor is Miss Kyung-Wha Chung.

0:27:24 > 0:27:29- Well, actually I was, er, in Korean age, nine years old.- Mm-hmm.

0:27:29 > 0:27:32- In British age, eight.- Ah-ha. OK.

0:27:32 > 0:27:35You haven't recorded it yet, have you?

0:27:35 > 0:27:40No, not yet. I actually just now recorded the Beethoven concerto,

0:27:40 > 0:27:42but Mendelssohn is to follow very soon.

0:27:42 > 0:27:46Well, the Beethoven's enough to keep anybody busy for a week or two.

0:27:46 > 0:27:48Er, we're going to play for you now,

0:27:48 > 0:27:51one of the pieces we had much success with when we were touring

0:27:51 > 0:27:53together with Kyung-Wha, myself and Moray.

0:42:37 > 0:42:40with a number of Kreisler records, and one of the pieces

0:42:40 > 0:42:45we played very often was Liebesfreud played by Fritz Kreisler himself.

0:42:45 > 0:42:47I used to hear this very often as a child

0:42:47 > 0:42:50and we've arranged it for flute and orchestra.
