0:00:13 > 0:00:14Barry Manilow arrived in London tonight.
0:00:17 > 0:00:20Not everyone is all that keen on Barry Manilow.
0:00:22 > 0:00:23They hate me.
0:00:27 > 0:00:29Floyd will be coming back
0:00:29 > 0:00:30in just a little while.
0:00:30 > 0:00:31In the meantime,
0:00:31 > 0:00:33here's a very, very beautiful song
0:00:33 > 0:00:34written by David Pomeranz
0:00:34 > 0:00:36and presented here by Barry Manilow.
0:00:36 > 0:00:43# Doctor my woman is comin' back home late today
0:00:43 > 0:00:48# Could you maybe give me something?
0:00:48 > 0:00:52# Cos the feelin' is gone
0:00:52 > 0:00:57# And I must get it back right away
0:00:57 > 0:01:02# Before she sees that I've been
0:01:02 > 0:01:10# Up, down Tryin' to get the feelin' again
0:01:10 > 0:01:17# All around, tryin' to get the feelin' again
0:01:17 > 0:01:19# The one that made me shiver
0:01:20 > 0:01:24# Made my knees start to quiver
0:01:24 > 0:01:27# Every time she walked in
0:01:28 > 0:01:32# And I've looked high, low
0:01:32 > 0:01:37# Everywhere I possibly can
0:01:37 > 0:01:43# But there's no tryin' to get the feelin' again
0:01:43 > 0:01:50# It seemed to disappear as fast as it came
0:01:55 > 0:01:58# Where did it run to?
0:01:58 > 0:02:02# I thought I'd done all that I could
0:02:02 > 0:02:06# Just to keep the love light burnin'
0:02:08 > 0:02:11# But whatever I've done I guess
0:02:11 > 0:02:15# I just haven't done it too good
0:02:15 > 0:02:21# Cos all that's left is yearnin'
0:02:21 > 0:02:24# I've been up, down,
0:02:24 > 0:02:29# Tryin' to get the feelin' again
0:02:29 > 0:02:31# All around
0:02:31 > 0:02:35# Tryin' to get the feelin' again
0:02:35 > 0:02:40# The one that made me shiver
0:02:40 > 0:02:42# Made my knees start to quiver
0:02:42 > 0:02:46# Every time she walked in
0:02:46 > 0:02:50# And I've looked high and low
0:02:50 > 0:02:55# And everywhere I possibly can
0:02:55 > 0:03:02# But there's no tryin' to get the feelin' again
0:03:02 > 0:03:10# It seemed to disappear as fast as it came
0:03:10 > 0:03:14# And I've been lookin', I've been lookin', I've been up
0:03:14 > 0:03:19# I've been down and tryin' to get the feelin'
0:03:19 > 0:03:24# I've been up, I've been down, I've been tryin' to get
0:03:24 > 0:03:26# I've been tryin', I've been tryin'
0:03:26 > 0:03:28# I've been tryin' to get the feelin'
0:03:28 > 0:03:35# I've been tryin' to get the feelin' again
0:03:35 > 0:03:38# I want to get that feelin'
0:03:38 > 0:03:41# To get that feelin'
0:03:41 > 0:03:45# I've got to get that feelin'
0:03:45 > 0:03:48# I've got to get that feelin' again
0:03:48 > 0:03:50# Tryin' to get
0:03:50 > 0:03:57# Trying to get, get, get Tryin' to get the feelin'
0:03:57 > 0:04:05# I've been tryin' to get the feelin' again. #
0:04:06 > 0:04:08How soon did music come into your life?
0:04:08 > 0:04:12I always... It came very easy to me.
0:04:12 > 0:04:15The music always came very easy to me.
0:04:15 > 0:04:17Thank goodness, my mother
0:04:17 > 0:04:20and my grandparents and my entire family, as a matter of fact,
0:04:20 > 0:04:23always encouraged the musicality in me.
0:04:23 > 0:04:26They threw an accordion in my hands when I was really young
0:04:26 > 0:04:27and they gave me lessons.
0:04:27 > 0:04:29They did what they could.
0:04:32 > 0:04:39# You know I can't smile without you
0:04:39 > 0:04:43# I can't smile without you
0:04:43 > 0:04:48# I can't laugh and I can't sing
0:04:48 > 0:04:52# I'm finding it hard to do anything
0:04:52 > 0:04:58# You see, I feel sad when you're sad
0:04:58 > 0:05:02# I feel glad when you're glad
0:05:02 > 0:05:08# If you only knew what I'm going through
0:05:08 > 0:05:14# I just can't smile without you
0:05:17 > 0:05:22# You came along just like a song
0:05:22 > 0:05:24# And brightened my day
0:05:24 > 0:05:26# Who would have believed
0:05:26 > 0:05:29# That you were part of a dream
0:05:29 > 0:05:33# Now it all seems light years away
0:05:33 > 0:05:38# And now you know I can't smile
0:05:38 > 0:05:41# Without you
0:05:41 > 0:05:45# I can't smile without you
0:05:45 > 0:05:50# I can't laugh and I can't sing
0:05:50 > 0:05:55# I'm finding it hard to do anything
0:05:55 > 0:06:00# You see, I feel sad when you're sad
0:06:00 > 0:06:04# I feel glad when you're glad
0:06:04 > 0:06:09# If you only knew what I'm going through
0:06:09 > 0:06:14# I just can't smile
0:06:14 > 0:06:18# Now some people say happiness
0:06:18 > 0:06:22# Takes so very long to find
0:06:22 > 0:06:25# Well, I'm finding it hard
0:06:25 > 0:06:32# Leaving your love behind me
0:06:32 > 0:06:38# And you see I can't smile without you
0:06:38 > 0:06:42# I can't smile without you
0:06:42 > 0:06:46# I can't laugh and I can't sing
0:06:46 > 0:06:51# I'm finding it hard to do anything
0:06:51 > 0:06:56# You see, I feel sad when you're sad
0:06:56 > 0:07:01# I feel glad when you're glad
0:07:01 > 0:07:06# If you only knew what I'm going through
0:07:06 > 0:07:13# I just can't smile
0:07:16 > 0:07:22# Without you. #
0:07:26 > 0:07:28This is the first concert tour here.
0:07:28 > 0:07:30What took you so long to get here?
0:07:30 > 0:07:31Nobody asked.
0:07:31 > 0:07:33No, actually, two people asked.
0:07:33 > 0:07:35My record company and,
0:07:35 > 0:07:37no, actually, there were a few people that asked,
0:07:37 > 0:07:40but I didn't think that there were enough people
0:07:40 > 0:07:42to merit me coming over here, honestly.
0:07:42 > 0:07:44You mean, who live here?
0:07:44 > 0:07:46I didn't think anybody knew what I did.
0:07:46 > 0:07:50- Well, your records sell here, sell millions.- Not really. Not here.
0:07:50 > 0:07:53Not anywhere other than in the United States.
0:07:53 > 0:07:54Not too much, at least.
0:07:54 > 0:07:57And I was the most surprised of anybody
0:07:57 > 0:08:01when we put these tickets on sale for the London Palladium.
0:08:01 > 0:08:03I mean, my heart, you know.
0:08:03 > 0:08:06But, I mean, we put these tickets on sale for two nights,
0:08:06 > 0:08:07and I said, "You're all crazy.
0:08:07 > 0:08:08"No-one's going to come."
0:08:08 > 0:08:10And these two nights went like that.
0:08:10 > 0:08:13And I said, "My family must have moved over here."
0:08:13 > 0:08:17And then we put the rest of the nights on sale and sold out, too.
0:08:17 > 0:08:21I have no idea what to expect, but I'm really excited about it.
0:08:21 > 0:08:24It must be slightly frightening to play in places like the Palladium,
0:08:24 > 0:08:28which has such a reputation as one of the major centres in the world.
0:08:28 > 0:08:32It transcends frightening. Terrifying is what it is.
0:08:32 > 0:08:35Sheer abject terror.
0:08:35 > 0:08:37- I will get it together, though. - What's it like?
0:08:37 > 0:08:39In America you're this big star,
0:08:39 > 0:08:41obviously, recognised wherever you go.
0:08:41 > 0:08:44What's it like coming here, where you're not recognise so much?
0:08:44 > 0:08:48- Is it nice being anonymous? - It's a really nice change.
0:08:48 > 0:08:50I mean, the first thing we did when we got here,
0:08:50 > 0:08:53we went to Westminster Abbey and it was wonderful
0:08:53 > 0:08:58and nobody recognised me except one thing happened.
0:08:58 > 0:09:02A car drove by and somebody stuck his head out the window
0:09:02 > 0:09:04and yelled, "Tourist!"
0:09:04 > 0:09:05And it was Paul McCartney.
0:09:05 > 0:09:10He's the only one who recognised me. I've only met Paul once.
0:09:10 > 0:09:13It was wonderful being able to walk around
0:09:13 > 0:09:16without causing any kind of commotion.
0:09:16 > 0:09:17Fabulous.
0:09:17 > 0:09:21That will probably only last until you've done your Palladium concert.
0:09:23 > 0:09:30# Time, you found time enough to love
0:09:30 > 0:09:35# And I found love enough to hold you
0:09:35 > 0:09:41# So tonight I'll stir the fire you feel inside
0:09:41 > 0:09:48# Until the flames of love enfold you
0:09:48 > 0:09:54# Layin' beside you Lost in the feelin'
0:09:54 > 0:10:02# So glad you open my door Come with me
0:10:03 > 0:10:09# Somewhere in the night we will know
0:10:09 > 0:10:15# Everything lovers can know
0:10:15 > 0:10:18# You're my song
0:10:18 > 0:10:24# Music too magic to end
0:10:24 > 0:10:31# I'll play you over and over again
0:10:31 > 0:10:37# Lovin' so warm, movin' so right
0:10:37 > 0:10:43# Closin' our eyes and feelin' the light
0:10:43 > 0:10:48# We'll just go on burnin' bright
0:10:48 > 0:10:52# Somewhere in the night
0:10:58 > 0:11:04# You'll sleep when the morning comes
0:11:04 > 0:11:10# And I'll lie and watch you sleepin'
0:11:10 > 0:11:16# And you'll smile when you dream about the night
0:11:16 > 0:11:23# Like it's a secret you've been keepin'
0:11:23 > 0:11:28# Layin' beside you Lost in the feelin'
0:11:28 > 0:11:34# So glad you open my door
0:11:34 > 0:11:37# You're my song
0:11:37 > 0:11:43# Music too magic to end
0:11:43 > 0:11:49# I'll play you over and over again
0:11:49 > 0:11:55# Lovin' so warm, movin' so right
0:11:55 > 0:12:01# Closin' our eyes and feelin' the light
0:12:01 > 0:12:06# We'll just go on burnin' bright
0:12:06 > 0:12:13# Somewhere in the night
0:12:13 > 0:12:18# We'll just go on burnin' bright
0:12:18 > 0:12:25# Somewhere in the night
0:12:27 > 0:12:36# In the night! #
0:12:40 > 0:12:41What about when you met
0:12:41 > 0:12:43the extraordinary Miss Midler?
0:12:43 > 0:12:45Why did the fortune, or misfortune,
0:12:45 > 0:12:47whichever way you want, to meet, recently,
0:12:47 > 0:12:48you met her in these baths.
0:12:48 > 0:12:51- First of all, let's talk about these baths.- Oh, why?
0:12:51 > 0:12:52LAUGHTER
0:12:52 > 0:12:55I tell you why, because she wouldn't tell me what they were like.
0:12:55 > 0:12:57Well, I don't blame her.
0:12:57 > 0:13:00- I want you to tell me. - They're Turkish baths.
0:13:00 > 0:13:01Have you never been to Turkish bath?
0:13:01 > 0:13:03Yeah, but not with a piano in it.
0:13:03 > 0:13:05LAUGHTER
0:13:05 > 0:13:07True. Well, they had a piano in it.
0:13:07 > 0:13:11The owner of the baths wanted to get some more customers in,
0:13:11 > 0:13:16so every Saturday night at around midnight he would institute a show.
0:13:16 > 0:13:18He would have a little show.
0:13:18 > 0:13:20I accompanied a singer.
0:13:20 > 0:13:22She was auditioning to get the job there,
0:13:22 > 0:13:24so she brought me in to just accompany her.
0:13:24 > 0:13:28It was a Turkish bath, and guys walking around in towels
0:13:28 > 0:13:30and nothing else, you know.
0:13:30 > 0:13:32Sheila, the lady I accompanied, she wouldn't look,
0:13:32 > 0:13:33she walked in blindfolded.
0:13:33 > 0:13:35I had to lead her to the stage.
0:13:35 > 0:13:38And I played the piano for her and she didn't get the job,
0:13:38 > 0:13:41but the house pianist that was there was leaving
0:13:41 > 0:13:43and he said would I want to come in
0:13:43 > 0:13:45and he asked me if I wanted to come in on a Saturday night
0:13:45 > 0:13:47and just play for the show.
0:13:47 > 0:13:49And the money was OK, so I came in,
0:13:49 > 0:13:52and the next Saturday night, the performer was Bette Midler
0:13:52 > 0:13:53and nobody had heard of her,
0:13:53 > 0:13:54least of all me.
0:13:54 > 0:13:57What was your reaction to her when you first met her?
0:13:57 > 0:14:00She was the most talented woman I'd ever met,
0:14:00 > 0:14:02I'd ever played for.
0:14:02 > 0:14:05The craziest lady that I've ever met in my life, either.
0:14:05 > 0:14:08I guess if you put crazy and talented together, you get a superstar.
0:14:12 > 0:14:17# Candles burnin' Glasses are chilled
0:14:17 > 0:14:21# And soon she'll be by
0:14:24 > 0:14:28# Hope and pray she'll say
0:14:28 > 0:14:35# That she's willin' to give us another try
0:14:36 > 0:14:40# And if all those plans I've made
0:14:40 > 0:14:44# Don't melt the lady's heart
0:14:44 > 0:14:49# I'll put on the old 45s
0:14:49 > 0:14:53# And maybe the old songs
0:14:53 > 0:14:57# Will bring back the old times
0:14:57 > 0:15:03# Maybe the old lines will sound new
0:15:03 > 0:15:10# Maybe she'll lay her head on my shoulder
0:15:10 > 0:15:17# Maybe old feelings will come through
0:15:17 > 0:15:23# Maybe we'll start to cry and wonder why
0:15:23 > 0:15:30# We ever walked away
0:15:30 > 0:15:35# Maybe the old songs will bring back the old times
0:15:35 > 0:15:43# And make her want to stay
0:15:50 > 0:15:55# It's been too long since I've
0:15:55 > 0:16:02# Seen her face light up when I come home
0:16:04 > 0:16:09# It's been too many hours
0:16:09 > 0:16:16# I've wasted starin' at the phone
0:16:16 > 0:16:17# Sweet old songs
0:16:17 > 0:16:19# I'm countin' on you
0:16:19 > 0:16:22# To bring her back to me
0:16:22 > 0:16:28# I'm tired of listenin' alone
0:16:28 > 0:16:31# Maybe the old songs
0:16:31 > 0:16:35# Will bring back the old times
0:16:35 > 0:16:41# Maybe the old lines will sound new
0:16:41 > 0:16:48# Maybe she'll lay her head on my shoulder
0:16:48 > 0:16:53# Maybe old feelings will come through
0:16:53 > 0:17:00# Or maybe we'll start to cry and wonder why
0:17:00 > 0:17:07# We ever walked away
0:17:07 > 0:17:13# Maybe the old songs will bring back the old times
0:17:13 > 0:17:21# And make her want to stay
0:17:21 > 0:17:29# And make her want to stay. #
0:17:31 > 0:17:34Your music, of course, has been criticised,
0:17:34 > 0:17:36inevitably, it would be in certain quarters,
0:17:36 > 0:17:37as "marshmallow music",
0:17:37 > 0:17:39I think people have called it.
0:17:39 > 0:17:43- That was the nice one. - That was the nice one.
0:17:43 > 0:17:47One or two unkind little snidey articles today in the British press.
0:17:47 > 0:17:50Did you read that article today in the British?
0:17:50 > 0:17:53I haven't even done anything yet and they gave me a bad review.
0:17:53 > 0:17:57- I just walked through a room on that one.- It's like being booed on stage.
0:17:59 > 0:18:04I can't... They used to affect me and they still do when I'm reading
0:18:04 > 0:18:08in the morning with my morning coffee sort of gurgles up on me again,
0:18:08 > 0:18:11but I don't pay too much attention to them because,
0:18:11 > 0:18:13it's probably a cliche,
0:18:13 > 0:18:15the audience gives me my reviews every night.
0:18:15 > 0:18:18If they didn't get up or if they didn't stand up,
0:18:18 > 0:18:19or if they walked out on me,
0:18:19 > 0:18:21I think that would be the worst review I could get.
0:18:21 > 0:18:25But I can't pay too much attention to the critics.
0:18:25 > 0:18:28Maybe I'm making good marshmallow music.
0:18:47 > 0:18:50# We dreamers have our ways
0:18:50 > 0:18:55# Of facin' rainy days
0:18:55 > 0:18:58# And somehow we survive
0:19:01 > 0:19:05# We keep the feelings warm
0:19:05 > 0:19:08# Protect them from the storm
0:19:08 > 0:19:13# Until our time arrives
0:19:15 > 0:19:20# Then one day the sun appears
0:19:22 > 0:19:27# And we come shinin' through those lonely years
0:19:32 > 0:19:35# I made it through the rain
0:19:35 > 0:19:38# I kept my world protected
0:19:38 > 0:19:42# I made it through the rain
0:19:42 > 0:19:45# I kept my point of view
0:19:45 > 0:19:49# I made it through the rain
0:19:49 > 0:19:53# And found myself respected
0:19:53 > 0:19:56# By the others who
0:19:56 > 0:20:00# Got rained on, too
0:20:00 > 0:20:05# And made it through
0:20:12 > 0:20:16# When friends are hard to find
0:20:16 > 0:20:19# And life seems so unkind
0:20:19 > 0:20:23# Sometimes you feel afraid
0:20:26 > 0:20:30# Just aim beyond the clouds
0:20:30 > 0:20:33# And rise above the crowds
0:20:33 > 0:20:38# And start your own parade
0:20:39 > 0:20:45# Cos when I chased my fears away
0:20:46 > 0:20:52# That's when I knew that I could finally say
0:20:55 > 0:21:00# I made it through the rain
0:21:00 > 0:21:02# I kept my world protected
0:21:02 > 0:21:06# I made it through the rain

0:21:09 > 0:21:13# I made it through the rain
0:21:13 > 0:21:17# And found myself respected
0:21:17 > 0:21:20# By the others who
0:21:20 > 0:21:23# Got rained on, too
0:21:23 > 0:21:27# And made it through
0:21:29 > 0:21:34# I made it through the rain

0:23:11 > 0:23:15CHEERING AND APPLAUSE
0:23:31 > 0:23:36Well, it's unanimous. They hate me!
0:23:36 > 0:23:40Have you read some of these things? God damn!
0:23:40 > 0:23:43They seem to be preoccupied with my nose, aren't they?
0:23:45 > 0:23:48People who hate me are the people who get in for free!
0:23:48 > 0:23:50Well, I think the first thing to make clear is that
0:23:50 > 0:23:52I don't actually have a personal vendetta
0:23:52 > 0:23:55against Barry Manilow. He's probably a very nice chap.
0:23:55 > 0:23:57The thing which I don't really like about him
0:23:57 > 0:24:00is I don't think he's very talented.
0:24:00 > 0:24:01He can't sing very well.
0:24:01 > 0:24:04He doesn't write his own songs.
0:24:04 > 0:24:06He isn't good-looking.
0:24:06 > 0:24:10It's very hard to pin down, actually, why this man attracts
0:24:10 > 0:24:13such astonishing attention and notoriety.
0:24:13 > 0:24:17He's just a very, very average performer.
0:24:17 > 0:24:19He's got nothing new to offer.
0:24:19 > 0:24:21Nothing particularly exciting about him.
0:24:21 > 0:24:24So, I dislike mediocrity very strongly.
0:24:24 > 0:24:26Barry Manilow arrived in London tonight
0:24:26 > 0:24:28to a rapturous welcome from hundreds of his fans,
0:24:28 > 0:24:30most of them married women.
0:24:30 > 0:24:32Chris Lowe was there.
0:24:32 > 0:24:34- ALL: We want Barry. - The impact Barry Manilow
0:24:34 > 0:24:36has on his fans is quite remarkable.
0:24:36 > 0:24:39But even the singer himself doesn't understand it.
0:24:39 > 0:24:42He calls it spooky, because as he himself admits,
0:24:42 > 0:24:45he doesn't have the sex appeal of the traditional pop singer.
0:24:45 > 0:24:48No, his appeal is generally to the more mature women,
0:24:48 > 0:24:51hundreds of whom were at Heathrow, just for a glimpse.
0:24:51 > 0:24:55- He's just gorgeous. - He really is fantastic.
0:24:55 > 0:24:58He's like no other man.
0:24:58 > 0:24:59We've been here since two o'clock.
0:24:59 > 0:25:04- Aren't you little bit past this sort of thing.- No! Do we look old?!
0:25:06 > 0:25:10Listen, you look at his fans. We're all different age groups.
0:25:10 > 0:25:13- You look at my baby. She loves him. - That's why he's so nice.
0:25:13 > 0:25:14He suits all ages.
0:25:14 > 0:25:18Moments later, Barry Manilow emerged, flanked by policemen
0:25:18 > 0:25:22and henchmen, to such an extent his fans could scarcely see him at all.
0:25:22 > 0:25:25And this is the man who doesn't even consider himself a very good singer.
0:25:25 > 0:25:27He says it just comes naturally.
0:25:27 > 0:25:28With scenes like these,
0:25:28 > 0:25:31you wouldn't think they were having trouble selling tickets
0:25:31 > 0:25:33for his concert at Blenheim Palace,
0:25:33 > 0:25:35but for one fan, none of that mattered,
0:25:35 > 0:25:37because even a glimpse of Barry Manilow proved too much.
0:25:44 > 0:25:49# I've been alive forever
0:25:49 > 0:25:54# And I wrote the very first song
0:25:56 > 0:26:01# I put the words and the melodies together
0:26:01 > 0:26:06# I am music and I write the songs
0:26:09 > 0:26:16# I write the songs that make the whole world sing
0:26:16 > 0:26:23# I write the songs of love and special things
0:26:23 > 0:26:29# I write the songs that make the young girls cry
0:26:29 > 0:26:35# I write the songs I write the songs
0:26:35 > 0:26:38# Oh, my music makes you dance
0:26:38 > 0:26:41# And gives your spirit to take a chance, take a chance!
0:26:41 > 0:26:48# And I wrote some rock 'n' roll so you can move
0:26:48 > 0:26:53# Music fills your heart, well That's a real fine place to start
0:26:53 > 0:26:55# It's from me, it's for you
0:26:55 > 0:26:57# It's from you, it's from me
0:26:57 > 0:27:00# It's a worldwide symphony
0:27:00 > 0:27:04# I write the songs that make
0:27:04 > 0:27:08# The whole world sing
0:27:08 > 0:27:11# I write the songs of love
0:27:11 > 0:27:14# And special things

0:28:24 > 0:28:25I have an idea of what
0:28:25 > 0:28:26I'd like them to be.
0:28:26 > 0:28:28And what I think they are.
0:28:28 > 0:28:31I think they're intelligent. I think they're warm.

0:28:49 > 0:28:52But they also treat you with love.
0:28:52 > 0:28:55The love comes straight up at you, doesn't it, from the audience?
0:28:55 > 0:28:57- Isn't that nice?- Yeah, that is nice.
0:28:57 > 0:28:59The love comes straight from me to them, too.
0:28:59 > 0:29:04I mean, that's the, that's where it's at. You know, I am grateful for it.
0:29:04 > 0:29:07I give it right back, I think.
0:29:07 > 0:29:10I want you to listen to the words of the next song, you know.

0:30:19 > 0:30:26# We need just one voice facing the unknown

0:32:06 > 0:32:09Selling records is a little bit like selling soap.

0:32:14 > 0:32:15Pop music is the same.

0:32:24 > 0:32:27and there's this massive middle-of-the-road market,
0:32:27 > 0:32:29which record companies tend to neglect.
0:32:29 > 0:32:32And Barry Manilow has cashed in on that.
0:32:32 > 0:32:33He's gone straight for it.
