0:07:36 > 0:07:38CHEERING AND APPLAUSE

0:07:38 > 0:07:42- Thank you very much.- Thank you! - The Proclaimers, everybody!

0:07:43 > 0:07:47Rab and Gerry and I were very good friends. Billy Connolly...

0:07:47 > 0:07:51and, particularly, there was a hardcore of about six or seven of us

0:07:51 > 0:07:56used to travel around in Scotland and make music together unofficially.

0:07:56 > 0:07:59You know, this thing about, we're doing tonight,

0:07:59 > 0:08:01we kind of did that in an informal way.

0:08:01 > 0:08:03Sitting with our backs against a wall,

0:08:03 > 0:08:07sitting on a floor in people's houses singing in three-part harmonies.

0:08:07 > 0:08:10We, kind of, we grew up on that kind of thing.

0:08:11 > 0:08:14This is brilliant being here.

0:08:14 > 0:08:17A room full of Gerry Rafferty fans!

0:08:17 > 0:08:18CHEERING AND APPLAUSE

0:08:22 > 0:08:23Thank you very much.

0:08:23 > 0:08:28You know I'd swap every single thing to have him sitting in the front row.

0:08:30 > 0:08:31Thank you very much.

0:08:31 > 0:08:34This is a song Martha asked me if I would sing tonight.

0:09:07 > 0:09:13# Well, we sit in empty rooms and dream our lives away

0:09:14 > 0:09:18# While the spirits come and go without a sound

0:09:19 > 0:09:24# And just like you and me They're tryin' to find a way

0:09:24 > 0:09:30# Find a way Find a way home

0:09:32 > 0:09:38# There's a full moon in the sky But that don't worry me

0:09:39 > 0:09:42# I don't ever hang my soul Out on the line

0:09:44 > 0:09:49# When the witchin' hour comes I always fly away

0:09:49 > 0:09:55# Fly away Fly away home

0:09:58 > 0:10:04# There's a light in the city That comes down from above

0:10:04 > 0:10:09# Leavin' you as wise as a serpent Harmless as a dove

0:10:09 > 0:10:15# Don't blow your tomorrows Don't throw away your love

0:10:15 > 0:10:19# You've got to be as wise as a serpent

0:10:19 > 0:10:25# Harmless as a dove

0:10:55 > 0:11:00# Now you once asked me why we can't communicate

0:11:02 > 0:11:06# But it doesn't always pay to tell the truth

0:11:07 > 0:11:12# If I told you right now You'd only run away

0:11:12 > 0:11:18# Run away Run away home

0:11:20 > 0:11:26# So we sit in empty rooms and dream our lives away

0:11:26 > 0:11:31# While the spirits come and go without a sound

0:11:32 > 0:11:37# Yeah just like you and me They're tryin' to find a way

0:11:37 > 0:11:44# Find a way Find a way home

0:11:45 > 0:11:51# There's a light in the city that comes down from above

0:11:51 > 0:11:57# Leavin' you as wise as a serpent Harmless as a dove

0:11:57 > 0:12:02# Don't blow your tomorrows Don't throw away your love

0:12:02 > 0:12:06# You've got to be as wise as a serpent

0:12:06 > 0:12:12# Harmless as a dove

0:12:21 > 0:12:29# Ahh, oh, oh. #

0:12:40 > 0:12:43CHEERING AND APPLAUSE

0:12:48 > 0:12:52When I was in high school and it was at this, that sort of,

0:12:52 > 0:12:55period of music when there was a lot of bad music on the radio, you know?

0:12:55 > 0:12:58And then Gerry was one of the few, I mean, I would hear, you know,

0:12:58 > 0:13:01Baker Street and Right Down The Line and it was...

0:13:01 > 0:13:05I always liked melodic music and so that appealed to me, right?

0:13:05 > 0:13:07So, I was always curious about him and then...

0:13:07 > 0:13:09You know, I didn't realise at the time that he was also the guy

0:13:09 > 0:13:11from Stealers Wheel, as well,

0:13:11 > 0:13:13and, of course, I heard that song growing up a lot, too.

0:13:13 > 0:13:16And, erm... But it was just one of those, erm,

0:13:16 > 0:13:19yeah, I was just, sort of, drawn to it, you know.

0:13:19 > 0:13:23Well, Right Down The Line has always been my favourite song by Gerry Rafferty,

0:13:23 > 0:13:27so that was one of the ones, when they first asked me, I was, like, "I hope that's not taken."

0:13:57 > 0:14:00# You know I need your love

0:14:00 > 0:14:03# You got that hold over me

0:14:04 > 0:14:07# As long as I got your love

0:14:07 > 0:14:10# You know that I'll never leave

0:14:11 > 0:14:15# When I wanted you to share my life

0:14:15 > 0:14:18# I had no doubt in my mind

0:14:18 > 0:14:22# It's been you, woman

0:14:22 > 0:14:26# Right down the line

0:14:28 > 0:14:31# I know the way I lean on you

0:14:32 > 0:14:35# Only you can see

0:14:36 > 0:14:40# The changes that I've been through

0:14:40 > 0:14:42# Have left their mark on me

0:14:43 > 0:14:47# You've been as constant as the Northern Star

0:14:48 > 0:14:50# The brightest light that shines

0:14:50 > 0:14:54# It's been you woman

0:14:54 > 0:14:58# Right down the line

0:15:01 > 0:15:05# I just want to say this is my way

0:15:05 > 0:15:12# Of telling you everything I could never say before

0:15:16 > 0:15:19# Yeah, this is my way

0:15:19 > 0:15:23# Of telling you every day

0:15:23 > 0:15:26# I'm loving you so much more

0:15:26 > 0:15:29# You believed in me

0:15:29 > 0:15:32# Through my darkest night

0:15:32 > 0:15:36# Put something better inside of me

0:15:36 > 0:15:39# You brought me into the light

0:15:40 > 0:15:44# Threw away all those crazy dreams

0:15:44 > 0:15:46# I put them all behind

0:15:46 > 0:15:51# It's been you, woman

0:15:51 > 0:15:55# Right down the line

0:16:29 > 0:16:35# I just want to say this is my way

0:16:35 > 0:16:42# Of telling you everything I could never say before

0:16:44 > 0:16:48# Yeah, this is my way

0:16:48 > 0:16:55# Of telling you every day I'm loving you so much more

0:16:55 > 0:16:58# If I should doubt myself

0:16:58 > 0:17:01# If I'm losing ground

0:17:01 > 0:17:05# I won't turn to someone else

0:17:05 > 0:17:08# They'd only let me down

0:17:09 > 0:17:12# When I wanted you to share my life

0:17:12 > 0:17:15# I had no doubt in my mind

0:17:15 > 0:17:20# It's been you woman

0:17:20 > 0:17:23# Right down the line

0:17:27 > 0:17:33# Ooh ooh ooh ooh ooh ooh

0:17:33 > 0:17:39# Ooh ooh ooh ooh ooh ooh ooh

0:17:43 > 0:17:49# Ooh ooh ooh ooh ooh ooh ooh

0:17:51 > 0:17:54# You got a hold on me

0:17:54 > 0:18:00# Right down the line. #

0:18:02 > 0:18:04CHEERING AND APPLAUSE

0:18:04 > 0:18:05Thank you very much!

0:18:06 > 0:18:08Thank you.

0:18:09 > 0:18:15Martha, Gerry's daughter, and I had a discussion after Gerry's funeral,

0:18:15 > 0:18:17after the funeral,

0:18:17 > 0:18:21about how we should, kind of, preserve some kind of legacy

0:18:21 > 0:18:23and the idea came around to it being,

0:18:23 > 0:18:26"It has to be something based around his song", really.

0:18:26 > 0:18:31Because the songs were what Gerry Rafferty lived for, that was his artwork,

0:18:31 > 0:18:34and he expressed himself greatly through songs.

0:18:34 > 0:18:39And so building a concert around his work

0:18:39 > 0:18:43and inviting a number of interesting artists to come and perform them

0:18:43 > 0:18:44was the order of the day.

0:19:38 > 0:19:42# Moonlight and gold

0:19:43 > 0:19:50# Midsummer magic When the night meets the day

0:19:50 > 0:19:53# And songbirds greet the dawn

0:19:56 > 0:20:01# You lie awake

0:20:01 > 0:20:07# You watch and wonder While the moon fades away

0:20:07 > 0:20:11# And one more day is born

0:20:13 > 0:20:16# Tides keep on turning

0:20:16 > 0:20:22# While hearts keep on yearning

0:20:22 > 0:20:29# To be where they know they belong

0:20:31 > 0:20:38# All on a new day You see in a new way

0:20:38 > 0:20:46# The things you've been leaning upon

0:20:53 > 0:20:57# Moonlight and gold

0:20:57 > 0:21:04# I will awaken to a love that runs deeper

0:21:04 > 0:21:08# Than the need in me

0:21:44 > 0:21:51# While you are sleeping The new day comes creeping

0:21:51 > 0:21:59# And life keeps on passing you by

0:22:01 > 0:22:08# Magic unfolds When the blue meets the gold

0:22:08 > 0:22:16# And the sun comes to open your eyes

0:22:23 > 0:22:25# Moonlight and gold

0:22:27 > 0:22:33# Midsummer magic As the night turns to day

0:22:33 > 0:22:37# And songbirds greet the dawn

0:22:40 > 0:22:44# You lie awake

0:22:44 > 0:22:50# You watch and wonder While the moon fades away

0:22:50 > 0:22:55# And one more day is born

0:23:31 > 0:23:36# Moonlight and gold. #

0:23:36 > 0:23:38CHEERING AND APPLAUSE

0:23:41 > 0:23:42Thank you.

0:23:52 > 0:23:55Thanks very much.

0:24:21 > 0:24:23# Late again

0:24:27 > 0:24:31# When I get home

0:24:31 > 0:24:34# You'll be waiting

0:24:39 > 0:24:41# Still you know

0:24:44 > 0:24:51# There ain't no use In you complaining

0:24:57 > 0:25:00# I know that I

0:25:02 > 0:25:05# Can show some respect

0:25:06 > 0:25:09# Especially when I'm wrong

0:25:14 > 0:25:17# But when I get back

0:25:19 > 0:25:22# I know you'll say

0:25:23 > 0:25:26# You've been away too long

0:25:31 > 0:25:35# Ooh

0:25:35 > 0:25:41# I wonder why I stay

0:25:41 > 0:25:45# When everybody's gone

0:25:45 > 0:25:46# Yeah

0:25:46 > 0:25:52# There's always something there

0:25:52 > 0:25:54# To keep me hanging on

0:25:54 > 0:25:59# Ooh, woo-oh-oh

0:26:01 > 0:26:03# La-la-la

0:26:04 > 0:26:05# La-la-la

0:26:07 > 0:26:08# La-la-la

0:26:10 > 0:26:11# La-la-la

0:26:19 > 0:26:22# Ooh

0:26:22 > 0:26:27# I wonder why I stay

0:26:29 > 0:26:34# When everybody's gone away

0:26:34 > 0:26:40# There's always something there

0:26:40 > 0:26:42# To keep me hanging on

0:26:42 > 0:26:47# Ooh

0:26:48 > 0:26:50# La-la-la

0:26:52 > 0:26:53# La-la-la

0:26:55 > 0:26:56# La-la-la

0:26:58 > 0:26:59# La-la-la

0:27:07 > 0:27:09# I know that I

0:27:12 > 0:27:14# Could show some respect

0:27:16 > 0:27:18# Especially when I'm wrong

0:27:24 > 0:27:27# Late again

0:27:30 > 0:27:36# When I get home You'll be waiting. #

0:27:40 > 0:27:42CHEERING AND APPLAUSE

0:27:42 > 0:27:43Thank you.

0:27:45 > 0:27:46Emma Pollock!

0:27:49 > 0:27:54I met Gerry a few times, but I wouldn't say that I knew him.

0:27:54 > 0:28:00But through the music, I think I knew him quite, quite well.

0:28:00 > 0:28:03Do you think that there will be a new generation of people

0:28:03 > 0:28:06that will come and listen to Gerry's work,

0:28:06 > 0:28:09- now that things like this have happened?- Well, I hope so.

0:28:09 > 0:28:12You can never tell with things like that, with songs and music,

0:28:12 > 0:28:16what carries on, but I'm sure this, this stuff is classic,

0:28:16 > 0:28:19classic music, that will last.

0:29:53 > 0:29:57# In a dance hall by the river

0:29:57 > 0:30:00# I was singing with a rambling band

0:30:00 > 0:30:03# Just another small town night

0:30:03 > 0:30:06# With a silver moon shining

0:30:08 > 0:30:12# I remember when I saw you

0:30:12 > 0:30:15# That first moment when it all began

0:30:15 > 0:30:19# You looked across a crowded room

0:30:19 > 0:30:22# You stole my heart away

0:30:23 > 0:30:27# And we stood outside In the moonlight

0:30:27 > 0:30:31# In the shadow of a factory wall

0:30:31 > 0:30:34# Music playing soft and low

0:30:34 > 0:30:37# And a gentle breeze sighing

0:30:39 > 0:30:42# And the light on the river was magic

0:30:42 > 0:30:46# Yes a magic that I still recall

0:30:46 > 0:30:49# Moments come and moments go

0:30:49 > 0:30:52# But these moments still remain

0:30:54 > 0:30:59# Remember how we met

0:31:02 > 0:31:07# Down by the waterside

0:31:09 > 0:31:15# How easily we forget

0:31:15 > 0:31:22# All the love that we knew

0:31:54 > 0:31:57# So we married our fortunes together

0:31:58 > 0:32:01# Sealed it with a golden band

0:32:01 > 0:32:04# Somewhere down along the road

0:32:04 > 0:32:07# We could see the flame dying

0:32:09 > 0:32:13# But an exiled heart grows weary

0:32:13 > 0:32:16# Like two strangers in a foreign land

0:32:16 > 0:32:20# Reached the point of no return

0:32:20 > 0:32:22# A long, long time ago

0:32:25 > 0:32:29# Remember how we met

0:32:32 > 0:32:37# Down by the waterside

0:32:40 > 0:32:45# How easily we forget

0:32:45 > 0:32:52# All the love that we knew

0:32:52 > 0:32:57# Oh, oh, oh, ooh

0:33:00 > 0:33:04# Oh oh ooh oh oh ooh

0:33:08 > 0:33:11# Oh, oh, oh, ooh

0:33:11 > 0:33:15# Oh ooh ooh oh oh oh

0:33:25 > 0:33:29# Hey, hey, yeah, yeah

0:33:32 > 0:33:36# Yeah

0:33:40 > 0:33:44# Ooh, oh, oh. #

0:34:36 > 0:34:37CHEERING AND APPLAUSE Thank you!

0:34:40 > 0:34:44Well, you know, I mean, it's very hard to, sort of,

0:34:44 > 0:34:47get into his songs and take them apart, you know?

0:34:47 > 0:34:51Being a songwriter myself, I hate, in a way, to deconstruct songs,

0:34:51 > 0:34:53because it kind of takes the mystery out of them.

0:34:53 > 0:34:54But that song in particular,

0:34:54 > 0:34:57One Drink Down And Another To Go, there's awful lot going in there.

0:34:57 > 0:35:00Sometimes, one of the things that fascinates me about Gerry's writing

0:35:00 > 0:35:03is, I think he, sometimes in the middle of a song

0:35:03 > 0:35:05he will change character

0:35:05 > 0:35:09and, like, he will have two people singing the same lyric

0:35:09 > 0:35:12or, you know, two different people come into the song.

0:35:12 > 0:35:14In this song, I'm not sure whether it's,

0:35:14 > 0:35:16he's actually expressing himself

0:35:16 > 0:35:19or whether he's putting words in his father's mouth.

0:35:46 > 0:35:52# To Rafferty's Bar in my old jaunting car

0:35:52 > 0:35:56# I took myself one Friday evening

0:35:57 > 0:36:00# To think on a son so deceiving

0:36:01 > 0:36:05# It's one drink down and another to go

0:36:06 > 0:36:11# He was married in haste to a woman unchaste

0:36:12 > 0:36:16# Much to the shame of the father

0:36:17 > 0:36:21# His face still half-covered in lather

0:36:21 > 0:36:26# It's one drink down and another to go

0:36:27 > 0:36:32# It's one drink down and another to go

0:36:32 > 0:36:37# When I pass through the town I must hang my head low

0:36:37 > 0:36:40# It's one drink down

0:36:40 > 0:36:48# And another to go

0:37:01 > 0:37:06# Now I'm not the kind to condemn out of hand

0:37:06 > 0:37:10# A woman whose virtue is easy

0:37:10 > 0:37:15# Just as long as she doesn't deceive me

0:37:15 > 0:37:21# It's one drink down And another to go

0:37:21 > 0:37:26# Imagine a life with an unfaithful wife

0:37:26 > 0:37:31# You might wake up in the morning

0:37:31 > 0:37:35# And find that she's left without warning

0:37:35 > 0:37:41# It's one drink down and another to go

0:37:41 > 0:37:46# It's one drink down and another to go

0:37:46 > 0:37:51# When I pass through the town I must hang my head low

0:37:51 > 0:37:54# It's one drink down

0:37:54 > 0:38:02# And another to go

0:38:33 > 0:38:38# And it's one drink down and another to go

0:38:38 > 0:38:43# When I pass through the town I must hang my head low

0:38:43 > 0:38:49# It's one drink down and another

0:38:49 > 0:38:55# To go. #

0:39:07 > 0:39:09APPLAUSE

0:39:09 > 0:39:11Thank you. Thank you, Martha!

0:39:15 > 0:39:18Thanks, see later!

0:39:21 > 0:39:22Anybody who knew Gerry

0:39:22 > 0:39:27and knew his work would know that harmony was very important to him.

0:39:27 > 0:39:30It was very important in the music that he made,

0:39:30 > 0:39:35but it was also a very important thing spiritually and inwardly.

0:39:35 > 0:39:38And he grew up with two brothers.

0:39:38 > 0:39:41Gerry's brothers were called Jim, was the next one,

0:39:41 > 0:39:44and then Joey was the eldest one.

0:39:44 > 0:39:47And Joey and his wife Moira had five children

0:39:47 > 0:39:53and they are all here tonight to sing for you in harmony with Martha.

0:39:53 > 0:39:55Please welcome...

0:39:55 > 0:39:57APPLAUSE

0:40:18 > 0:40:24# When we were young we used to sing

0:40:26 > 0:40:30# And we could feel the harmony

0:40:32 > 0:40:35# You sit there waiting

0:40:35 > 0:40:38# In the wings

0:40:38 > 0:40:42# How long have you been waiting

0:40:42 > 0:40:46# To let your light shine?

0:40:46 > 0:40:51# Many years have gone since then

0:40:53 > 0:40:57# Seen us go our different ways

0:40:59 > 0:41:05# But now we sit here once again

0:41:05 > 0:41:09# Tonight, we're going to sing out

0:41:09 > 0:41:14# Tonight, our light will shine

0:41:14 > 0:41:19# This is the time and place

0:41:21 > 0:41:26# To bring out our memories

0:41:28 > 0:41:31# It's written on every face

0:41:31 > 0:41:38# I can see it in you You can see it in me

0:41:41 > 0:41:45# In all the years we had

0:41:47 > 0:41:52# As part of a family tree

0:41:54 > 0:41:57# We knew the good and bad

0:41:57 > 0:42:04# I can see it in you You can see it in me

0:42:09 > 0:42:14# I know it's left its mark on you

0:42:16 > 0:42:21# I see the same things in myself

0:42:23 > 0:42:28# You know there's nothin' we can't do

0:42:28 > 0:42:36# We've been a long time waitin' But some things never die

0:42:36 > 0:42:41# It's time to leave all that behind

0:42:43 > 0:42:47# It's time to lay that ghost to rest

0:42:49 > 0:42:54# We can't deny the ties that bind

0:42:55 > 0:42:59# Tonight, we're going to sing out

0:42:59 > 0:43:04# Tonight, our light will shine

0:43:04 > 0:43:08# This is the time and place

0:43:11 > 0:43:15# To bring out our memories

0:43:17 > 0:43:21# It's written on every face

0:43:21 > 0:43:27# I can see it in you You can see it in me

0:43:30 > 0:43:37# In all the years we had When we were young we used to sing

0:43:37 > 0:43:44# As part of a family tree We could feel the harmony

0:43:44 > 0:43:47# We knew the good and bad

0:43:47 > 0:43:54# I can see it in you You can see it in me

0:44:00 > 0:44:07# When we were young we used to sing. #

0:44:11 > 0:44:14CHEERING AND APPLAUSE

0:44:27 > 0:44:31First time I met Gerry Rafferty was in Billy Connelly's dad's house,

0:44:31 > 0:44:36in White Street in Partick, in February of 1969,

0:44:36 > 0:44:43on the day of the evening of The Humblebums' first major concert, in the City Halls.

0:44:43 > 0:44:47And Billy had invited a few people to come and be part of this concert

0:44:47 > 0:44:51and I'm lucky enough to say I was one of them.

0:44:51 > 0:44:54And we convened at Billy's dad's house in the afternoon

0:44:54 > 0:44:58to go over the songs that we were going to sing in that evening

0:44:58 > 0:45:02and amongst them was the song that you're about to hear.

0:45:02 > 0:45:09A very poignant version, I think, at the piano, from Mr Roddy Hart.

0:45:09 > 0:45:10CHEERING AND APPLAUSE

0:45:42 > 0:45:47# The coat she wore still lies upon the bed

0:45:49 > 0:45:54# The book I gave her that she never read

0:45:56 > 0:46:02# She left without a single word to say

0:46:03 > 0:46:08# Her father didn't like me, anyway

0:46:11 > 0:46:16# She always wanted more than I could give

0:46:18 > 0:46:23# She wasn't happy with the way we lived

0:46:25 > 0:46:30# I didn't feel like asking her to stay

0:46:33 > 0:46:38# Her father didn't like me anyway

0:46:41 > 0:46:46# Daddy never knew what she'd seen in me

0:46:48 > 0:46:52# Said that I was going nowhere

0:46:55 > 0:47:01# Maybe if we had talked he'd have seen something in me

0:47:03 > 0:47:07# But Daddy didn't really care

0:47:09 > 0:47:14# To tell the truth I didn't have the nerve

0:47:16 > 0:47:22# I know I only got what I deserved

0:47:24 > 0:47:29# So now she's taken leave of me today

0:47:31 > 0:47:36# Her father didn't like me anyway

0:48:08 > 0:48:14# Daddy never knew what she'd seen in me

0:48:15 > 0:48:20# He said that I was going nowhere

0:48:23 > 0:48:28# Maybe if we had talked he'd have seen something in me

0:48:30 > 0:48:35# But Daddy didn't really care

0:48:37 > 0:48:42# The coat she wore still lies upon the bed

0:48:44 > 0:48:49# The book I gave her that she never read

0:48:52 > 0:48:56# She left without a single word to say

0:48:58 > 0:49:04# Her father didn't like me anyway. #

0:49:09 > 0:49:12CHEERING AND APPLAUSE Thank you very much.

0:49:17 > 0:49:19I think everybody is aware of Gerry's music.

0:49:19 > 0:49:21I was saying that earlier, the thing with his songs

0:49:21 > 0:49:23is that everybody is aware,

0:49:23 > 0:49:26but people don't realise that they're his songs

0:49:26 > 0:49:27and I was in that camp

0:49:27 > 0:49:30but, obviously, I'm aware of, you know, Baker Street and...

0:49:30 > 0:49:33you know, just... You know, everybody knows certain songs.

0:49:33 > 0:49:37But I, you know, even the fact that he was in Stealers Wheel,

0:49:37 > 0:49:39kind of, I was aware of it, but you don't really think about it.

0:49:39 > 0:49:41You just realise,

0:49:41 > 0:49:43you look at the length and breadth of the work and it's staggering.

0:49:43 > 0:49:46Like, the man has written some incredible songs

0:49:46 > 0:49:49that are just indelible, that will just be for ever.

0:50:25 > 0:50:27# Well, here I am

0:50:29 > 0:50:31# Back in town

0:50:32 > 0:50:36# This desert sand

0:50:36 > 0:50:38# Is comin' down

0:50:40 > 0:50:44# Warm wind blowin'

0:50:44 > 0:50:47# Through the trees

0:50:47 > 0:50:49# Watch them swing

0:50:49 > 0:50:51# Watch them sway

0:50:51 > 0:50:55# Lie here waiting for the day

0:50:57 > 0:50:59# Yeah, yeah

0:51:01 > 0:51:04# Sleep won't come

0:51:05 > 0:51:08# I need a drink

0:51:09 > 0:51:11# Stop my head

0:51:13 > 0:51:15# Don't want to think

0:51:16 > 0:51:18# Wishing I

0:51:20 > 0:51:22# Was here with you

0:51:23 > 0:51:28# But I know you're so far away

0:51:28 > 0:51:33# And I'm here waiting for the day

0:51:35 > 0:51:37# Yeah, yeah

0:51:39 > 0:51:45# Water of life Bring your light down on me

0:51:45 > 0:51:52# Take me out of this darkness Sweet star of the sea

0:51:53 > 0:51:59# Water so sweet You can open my eyes

0:52:00 > 0:52:08# You can bring down the rain On this desert so dry

0:52:13 > 0:52:15# Out on the street

0:52:17 > 0:52:19# It's time to go

0:52:20 > 0:52:23# The silence speaks

0:52:24 > 0:52:26# Hear it call

0:52:28 > 0:52:30# City of

0:52:31 > 0:52:33# The living dead

0:52:35 > 0:52:39# Count the lights on the motorway

0:52:39 > 0:52:43# Lie here waiting for the day

0:52:45 > 0:52:48# Yeah, yeah

0:52:48 > 0:52:50# Ooh, let's go

0:53:27 > 0:53:33# Water of life Pour your light down on me

0:53:33 > 0:53:40# Take me out of this darkness Sweet star of the sea

0:53:42 > 0:53:44# Water so sweet

0:53:44 > 0:53:49# You can open my eyes

0:53:49 > 0:53:56# You can bring down the rain On this desert so dry

0:54:01 > 0:54:03# Yes, here I am

0:54:05 > 0:54:07# Back in town

0:54:09 > 0:54:11# Just as the night

0:54:12 > 0:54:14# Is comin' down

0:54:16 > 0:54:18# Warm wind blowin'

0:54:19 > 0:54:21# Through the trees

0:54:23 > 0:54:25# I watch them swing

0:54:25 > 0:54:27# I watch them sway

0:54:27 > 0:54:32# I lie here waiting for the day

0:54:34 > 0:54:35# Yeah, yeah

0:54:37 > 0:54:39# All right

0:54:41 > 0:54:42# All right

0:54:44 > 0:54:45# Yeah

0:54:45 > 0:54:47# Yeah, yeah, yeah

0:54:49 > 0:54:53# Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah

0:55:02 > 0:55:04# Ooh, yeah. #

0:55:16 > 0:55:18CHEERING AND APPLAUSE

0:55:18 > 0:55:19Thank you!

0:55:22 > 0:55:26This is one of those songs that is, kind of, you know,

0:55:26 > 0:55:28it made me want to become, you know, do this in living.

0:55:28 > 0:55:31So it's cool that I get to do that one tonight.

0:55:45 > 0:55:51# You still got that light in your eyes

0:55:53 > 0:55:58# Our day is comin' by and by

0:56:00 > 0:56:07# Travelling this long road here with you

0:56:07 > 0:56:12# We still gotta long way Still gotta long way to go

0:56:41 > 0:56:45# The first time I set eyes on you

0:56:45 > 0:56:48# I listened to you sing Yeah, yeah

0:56:48 > 0:56:54# We didn't have to speak For the words said everything

0:56:56 > 0:56:58# When you walked into my life

0:57:00 > 0:57:03# We were on our way, yeah

0:57:04 > 0:57:09# So long ago But it seems like yesterday

0:57:09 > 0:57:11# I just want to tell ya

0:57:11 > 0:57:15# You still got that light in your eyes

0:57:15 > 0:57:16# Yes, you do

0:57:17 > 0:57:23# Our day is comin' by and by

0:57:45 > 0:57:47# Are days I spent with you Yeah, yeah

0:57:48 > 0:57:53# Each time we hit the road it was always something new

0:57:56 > 0:58:02# Spaced out rather drunk Singing in the sun, yeah, yeah

0:58:03 > 0:58:08# Another bottle down And the new day just begun

0:58:08 > 0:58:11# I just want to tell ya

0:58:51 > 0:58:56# Shine a light Shine it bright on the days gone down

0:59:07 > 0:59:11# We won't forget the days gone down

0:59:11 > 0:59:13# They're written in our hearts Yeah, yeah

0:59:14 > 0:59:19# As much in tune As we were right from the start

0:59:21 > 0:59:26# All seems so much harder now

0:59:26 > 0:59:28# Seemed so easy then Yeah, yeah

0:59:28 > 0:59:34# Maybe someday just for fun We might do it all again

0:59:34 > 0:59:37# I just want to tell ya

0:59:37 > 0:59:41# You still got that light in your eyes

0:59:41 > 0:59:43# Yes, you do

1:01:19 > 1:01:22CHEERING AND APPLAUSE

1:01:22 > 1:01:23Thank you very much.

1:01:25 > 1:01:27What you think are the special things

1:01:27 > 1:01:29that make a Gerry Rafferty song? Is melody?

1:01:29 > 1:01:33It's melody, and harmony, and chord sequence for me.

1:01:33 > 1:01:35He's one of the most...

1:01:37 > 1:01:42Unusual melody writers against an unpredictable chord progression

1:01:42 > 1:01:45and that's what music, for me, is really all about.

1:01:45 > 1:01:47That's the thing that drives me, as a writer.

1:01:50 > 1:01:54# To each and every one of you

1:01:54 > 1:01:58# I say goodbye, farewell, adieu

1:01:58 > 1:02:02# To each and all I say goodbye

1:02:02 > 1:02:08# I know it's been fun but we're living a lie

1:02:10 > 1:02:15# You said you spoke straight from the heart

1:02:15 > 1:02:19# But that was the one thing that kept us apart

1:02:19 > 1:02:24# Cos when I read between the lines

1:02:24 > 1:02:29# I saw that the only heart speaking was mine

1:02:32 > 1:02:36# To each and every one of you

1:02:36 > 1:02:38# I say goodbye

1:02:38 > 1:02:40# Indeed, I do

1:02:40 > 1:02:43# If you should ask me why I go

1:02:43 > 1:02:48# I wouldn't say, cos you should know

1:02:51 > 1:02:55# When everything is said and done

1:02:55 > 1:02:59# Nothing is lost and nothing is won

1:02:59 > 1:03:03# I took from you You took from me

1:03:03 > 1:03:09# But I suppose that's how it had to be

1:03:32 > 1:03:35# To each and every one of you

1:03:35 > 1:03:38# I say goodbye

1:03:38 > 1:03:41# Indeed, I do

1:03:41 > 1:03:44# If you should ask me why I go

1:03:44 > 1:03:50# I wouldn't say, cos you should know

1:03:50 > 1:03:55# To each and every one of you

1:03:55 > 1:04:00# I say goodbye, farewell, adieu

1:04:00 > 1:04:03# To each and all I say goodbye

1:04:03 > 1:04:08# I know it's been fun but we're living

1:04:08 > 1:04:15# A lie. #

1:04:32 > 1:04:35I wrote the four or five songs that I would love to sing

1:04:35 > 1:04:38and then I thought, "I'm not really going to do them justice."

1:04:38 > 1:04:44I'd rather do something that I could make my own in a certain way,

1:04:44 > 1:04:48because I think the point of taking someone's song is

1:04:48 > 1:04:51doing something that reflects what you bring, I guess.

1:04:52 > 1:04:57It's not any old singer-songwriter that would get me to put on a suit!
